But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! You should control portion sizes and keep track of his weight, which will help your Bully live a happier and longer life. Bulldogs in the United States are typically gentle, playful, and voracious eaters. Bulldogs who are in good physical shape have superior overall health, so feed them properly for a longer, happier life. Puppies Feeding Bulldog puppies, like any puppies, are voracious feeders. Because the nutritional composition of foods varies by brand, always follow the portioning guidelines on the container. Keeping this in mind, a puppy under the age of four months should consume three to four cups of food every day, divided into four feedings. Reduce feedings to three times a day between 4 and 6 months, for a total of two and a quarter to three cups of food each day. Quantity and Recurrence Your dog should be on an adult eating schedule after six months: one and a half to two cups of food per day, divided into two meals. When free-fed, bulldogs have a tendency to overeat, and eating too much too soon might make them unwell. Bulldogs, unlike other dogs that may self-regulate their meals, must be fed on a regular schedule to maintain a healthy and regular digestive system. You could have trouble judging his weight because bulldogs are inherently chubby and wrinkled. If not, progressively reduce his food intake and lengthen your morning walks. Behavior And Treats Feeding your dog entails more than just putting food in his bowl. You must also keep track of his treat intake, or else his health and behavior will deteriorate. Instead, give him attention by playing with him or taking a stroll with him, both of which will help him maintain a healthy weight. When you do offer him goodies in a training situation, remember not to overfeed him—always follow the product portioning guidelines. Excellent-quality dry dogfood can be mixed with canned food, broth, or water to give a well-rounded diet for growing American bulldogs. Puppies of the American Bulldog should be fed high-quality, brand-name puppy food. Only clean, fresh water should be used, and food and water dishes should be washed frequently. Only if the puppy has been separated from his mother or if there is a large litter and not all of the puppies are getting adequate food will a human be required to intervene in this process. If this is the case, you should seek advice from your veterinarian. At this stage, their tummies are too sensitive to give them anything. English Bulldog Puppy, 4 Weeks If you have a four-week-old English Bulldog puppy, he should still be with his mother and littermates. At this stage, he is unlikely to be ready for puppy chow, but you are allowed to see if he is interested. English Bulldog Puppy, 6 Weeks When you have an English Bulldog puppy that is 6 weeks old, you may notice certain changes. While it is still too young for him to leave his mother, weaning should begin at this stage. At least once a day, he should be given puppy chow. If your puppy is still not interested in puppy food, it is possible that it is still too early, and you should try again. Your puppy should be weaned from his mother and eating puppy chow by the age of eight weeks. Even though he is unlikely to eat much at a meal, you should feed him three times a day. Each day, roughly 1. At this stage, his hunger is likely to have increased. Make sure your dog is gaining adequate weight if he looks ravenous. As previously said, you should be able to see a waist in your puppy but not be able to count any ribs. English Bulldog Puppy, 12 Weeks When your English Bulldog puppy reaches the age of 12 weeks, he will consume around 2 cups of puppy food each day. He should still consume three meals every day because he will be burning a lot of calories from both growing and exercising. For the first 14 months, feed your dog large-breed puppy kibble to encourage moderate but steady growth. Until your dog is fully grown and eating an adult diet, avoid calcium-rich foods or supplements. The additional calcium may interfere with proper bone development. Before switching their food, seek advice from your veterinarian. Then gradually introduce your puppy to his new diet. When it comes to determining what to feed your Bulldog puppy, you have four options. An English Bulldog puppy who is free fed has constant access to the food and can eat as much and as often as they desire. This manner of feeding, while simple and convenient, poses a risk to your puppy. This strategy is effective provided your puppy only eats when he or she is hungry, which is not the case for the majority of dogs. House training and establishing feeding patterns are challenging with free feeding. It can result in obesity in dogs who are unable to stop eating when they are full. Kibble for a Bulldog Puppy The most popular all-around puppy food is definitely dry kibble. Choose a dry puppy formula that is specifically formulated for puppies. You should also look for one that is appropriate for medium to large breeds. Not all brands, however, are created equal. Avoid using substances such as Corn. Buying Guide Allergies Do you love your Bulldog but dread the idea of him getting a rash or an upset stomach? Gluten-free dog foods can be made with potatoes, sweet potatoes, or chickpeas. To avoid this unpleasantry altogether, just choose one labeled hypoallergenic to ensure safety from rashes and other allergic reactions like itchy skin and ear infections caused by bacterial growth in moist areas without proper ventilation. Some dogs tend to eat less than others during each mealtime; this may affect what kind of budget —or even which brands- best suit them! As your puppy grows, you can graduate to larger size kibble like Royal Canin design their smaller bites and Bulldog jaws in mind. For example, if you have an adult bulldog over 12 months old, their diet should be different from the one for all-life stages four weeks or older. It can be hard to know how a bulldog will react when it comes down to chicken. Some are allergic, while others seem ok with the food. You should always buy quality dog foods but if you notice symptoms of an allergy, then steer clear from this type of protein entirely! Although some dogs might not have any problem eating chicken , there are still plenty that need more care than just giving them any old things — especially those who may be sensitive or allergic to poultry products like eggs and turkey. Things To Look Into For American Bulldogs When it comes to American Bulldogs , choosing the right food is crucial, and there are many things you should consider before purchasing. The American Bulldogs can weigh anywhere between pounds. For example, hip dysplasia and ACL tears will be more common in heavier dogs due to all their added weight around joints and bones, which makes them vulnerable at higher rates than other breeds might have been. Keeping your pet healthy by getting enough exercise and not allowing too many treats while keeping an eye out for any extra fat or bulges should help tremendously! The food you serve should be packed full of nutritious protein, such as chicken, beef, or pork. Lean, high-quality proteins are best for your guests, and they will thank you with their business — so always check the brand to see where the company sources its meat from. Your American Bulldog needs healthy doses of Omega-3 and six fatty acids to have a strong immune system, heart function, muscle shape. Not all carbs are created equal! Simple carbohydrates like rice or blueberries digest more easily than complex ones such as grains which many dogs have difficulty digesting. Some believe that fiber is important for digestion, but some dog foods are more difficult to digest. Always read the ingredients list, so you know what goes into those kibbles before feeding them to your pup. This is because they vary so much from one another, with some being smaller and others larger. Bulldogs are full of surprises! Therefore, the best dog food for bulldogs should consist of plenty of high-quality proteins, enough carbohydrates to fuel their bodies, and fats for normal joint function and overall health. But just like us, dogs are individuals. So choosing a food specifically for their individual needs can be a little more complicated. For one, there are hundreds of different brands with different nutritional values that most of us would find confusing. And secondly, since each bulldog is different, they all have different weights, ages, activity levels, and preferences. Adding to the confusion, bulldogs can have sensitivities to certain ingredients and can be allergic to others. So to make the task easier, we have prepared a special guide for American Bulldog owners so they can identify which dog food will best suit their unique pup. Macro-nutrients or macros consist of three major groups of food; proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. We already have an idea about the number of macros we should feed bulldogs, but here are some details that you need to know: Proteins For an American Bulldog, proteins are the most important macro. Proteins consist of amino acids that help in repairing muscle tissue and provide lots of energy so your dog stays active. More than that, proteins also aid in the release of hormones and enzymes and help in strengthening the immune system, amongst other things. Because bulldogs have a muscular body, your dog food must provide enough protein to maintain their physical structure. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates are necessary for providing energy to your bulldog. The two most common sources of carbohydrates in dog foods are grains brown rice, oatmeal, barley and vegetables potatoes, peas. Although carbohydrates are important too, you should generally opt for a dog food that has lower carbohydrate content. Fats Fats are important as they make dog food tastier and thus more appealing to your dog. But more than that, fats are essential for the healthy functioning of nerves, body cells, and joints. Fats also provide almost twice as much energy as proteins and carbs. Daily Caloric Intake for Bulldogs The question of how many calories a bulldog should eat is rather confusing. The reason for this is because bulldogs can vary drastically from one another, and thus will have completely different calorie requirements. Bulldogs can weigh anywhere between 60 to pounds on average, and their activity levels can vary widely as well. They might be a puppy, or an adult, or even a senior. Also, they can be either male or female and might be spayed or neutered. All of these factors play a huge role in determining the right amount of calories your bulldog should consume without being under or overfed. However, there still is a standard measure of how much calories your bulldog should consume. Some smaller bulldogs might even be satisfied with fewer than calories, while some heavier and more active ones would require as much as calories a day to stay lean and healthy. But like we said before, it all depends on the individual dog. These can give you a good estimate as to how much you should be feeding them. Thus feeding them with the right frequency can help make sure they remain healthy and fit. Puppies are generally more energetic but have smaller stomachs, and thus need regular feeding to stay active. For bulldogs between the ages of 4 to 6 months, the frequency should be reduced to three portions a day. And once your bulldog is older than six months, you can follow the adult feeding regime which is feeding them two portions a day. Common Health Issues in American Bulldogs Although bulldogs are a healthy breed, they are prone to developing health issues at any life stage. Early identification of these issues can protect your dog from more severe problems later on by making the necessary changes in their diet and lifestyle. Hip Dysplasia, Elbow Dysplasia, and Joint Problems Hip and Elbow dysplasia is a degenerative health condition in which the hip or elbow joints fail to develop properly, leading to pain and even arthritis later in life. Joint problems are also more common in bulldogs due to their larger body size compared to their short legs. Although hip and elbow dysplasia is genetic and incurable, recognizing them earlier on can prevent them from worsening with age. Feeding them proper food along with exercise and physical therapy can save your bulldog a lot of pain and discomfort in their golden years. Obesity Obesity is a particularly serious issue with bulldogs. Because these dogs love to eat, they can easily be overfed. Foods You Should Avoid Feeding Your Bulldog Just like any other pet, there are certain foods you should refrain from feeding your bulldog as well. Some of these foods can cause stomach issues, while others are toxic for bulldogs. Onion and Garlic: Both of these are extremely dangerous as they can cause anemia in bulldogs. If fed in large amounts, they can cause organ damage or failure. Chocolates: Although chocolate seems like a pretty harmless food, it is severely toxic to dogs. Fruits with pits: Most fruits that have pits in them contain cyanide. In large amounts, this can cause seizures, vomiting and an irregular heartbeat. Some pits also pose a choking hazard to bulldogs. Macadamia Nuts: These nuts contain compounds that can cause vomiting, inflammation, and joint pain in dogs. Puppies How to Care For a Newborn German Shepherd Puppy German Shepherd puppies are the cutest pets, but can be very fragile at an earlier stage of life, making it impossible for them to fight and survive alone. Keep reading to find out everything you need to know about newborn German shepherd puppy care. However, these little babies are often born blind, deaf, and toothless. Since these pups are so fragile at an earlier stage of life, it is nearly impossible for them to fight and survive alone. Unfortunately, due to lack of care, many German Shepherd puppies easily succumb to unfortunate circumstances. It is essential to know that newborn puppies generally require a lot more care and attention than adult dogs. Here, we will dive deep into the world of newborn German shepherd puppies so you know how to take care of them. Important Things to Know About German Shepherd Puppies Newborn German Shepherds are blind until they are between 8 and 14 days old and deaf until they are 5 to 8 days old. These unique-looking puppies are typically born with dark blue or grey eyes, but their physical features keep changing and evolving as they grow. If the first litter of a German Shepherd has more than four puppies, it can render the mother incapable of providing them ample care. This means that there is a potential risk of the newborns getting sick, dying, or becoming very weak until you intervene. Care for the Pups During their Birth Once your German Shepherd has given birth, you will need to check all the puppies to ensure they are breathing properly. Generally, the mother cuts the umbilical cord and cleans up her puppies by licking them gently. She typically starts with their genitals, moves on to their legs, and then finishes with the rest of their bodies. You can start by using a disinfectant to clean the cords and then rub their bodies with a clean towel until they dry. Adjust the Temperature and Humidity Before delivering, a German Shepherd mother searches for a safe and private space enough for her puppies to be born it. So, as a dog parent, it will be your responsibility to provide your pup with a big enough box to suit her and her puppies. Therefore, adjusting the temperature of the nest is a rather significant part of keeping these pups healthy. Generally, German Shepherd mothers are the primary heat source for babies. However, if, for any reason, the mother cannot be in the box, you must provide the puppies with other heat sources, such as a warm lamp or a heating pad. The best way to maintain ideal humidity levels for the puppies is to install a humidifier or keep the nest in your laundry room. Feed the Puppies A significant part of caring for your newborn German Shepherd puppies is providing them with the right amount of nourishment. The best way to do this is to allow nature to take the wheel. The puppies will be nursed by their mother immediately after the birth, even without the pups unable to see her nipples. A German Shepherd mother typically lactates for two months. However, if the mother is unable to provide her pups with this nourishment, you will have to search for other sources. Take Note of Hygiene Maintaining the hygiene of the puppies and their nest is an integral part of keeping them in good health. However, it is best to maintain a clean environment by disinfecting the nest and replacing the blanks or towels once a day. Additionally, you must only start bathing the puppies after 45 days of their birth. Wrapping Up This article only provides you with the basics of newborn German Shepherd puppy care. They cannot see or hear yet, or regulate their body temperature, and they require a lot of tender care from their mom. The new mom is usually very excited and concerned about each newborn, and sometimes overly enthusiastic about chewing off the umbilical cord, which may later result in an umbilical hernia that will take a little longer to close, but is no danger to the puppy. We record the ribbon color and weight of each puppy so that, when we weigh the pups throughout the next days and weeks, we can make sure that each one is gaining weight. Normal weight for a newborn German Shepherd puppy ranges from g to g 0. We take great care to ensure that our newborn German Shepherd puppies have the best chance for a healthy start. A German Shepherd female can be in active labor for 6 to 18 hours, sometimes even longer if she takes a break while having a large litter, and we of course do not leave her side during this time. I stay up making sure that the whelping box which is always in my office or bedroom is clean and dry after each puppy is born, and that the temperature stays constant 86 - 88 F in the room. We keep the temperature at this level for about 2 weeks, gradually reducing it down to normal F by the end of the third week. Someone is always present with the puppies during the first 5 days. I handle the puppies several times a day, as well as weigh them every other day during this period, to make sure that everyone looks and acts healthy, nurses well, and is gaining weight. I usually buy a dozen fluffy cotton towels, and use two at a time as bedding for the whelping box. I change these towels twice daily at this stage to make sure the puppies are always clean and dry. Starting from day 3, and until day 16, I follow The "Super Dog" Program for our puppies - an early neurological stimulation program described by Dr. Carmen Battaglia. It has numerous benefits later in life for puppies. Often, puppies that were born the smallest overtake the bigger ones. Even at this tender age strong individual differences can be noted among German Shepherd puppies. Also, there is difference in their color and markings, and long-hair German Shepherd puppies can often be identified at this age. The new mom is very attached to her puppies at this age and is very reluctant to leave them even for the shortest time. She spends a lot of time sleeping with the puppies nursing peacefully, and is also very happy to be busy cleaning each puppy several times a day and flipping them around gently with her nose. At about 2 weeks of age German Shepherd puppies actually start looking more like puppies, and not just fat black sausages with feet attached. We use undiluted evaporated goats milk from a can, warmed up to be pleasant to the touch. Most puppies readily accept the bottle, and we consider this to be very important bonding and social time as well. Three weeks of age is my favorite age of all. The puppies now can be recognized as German Shepherd puppies. They are alert, playful, and there is a lot of wrestling, tail-wagging, and even barking going on as they explore their surroundings and interact with each other and their mom, all of which is extremely cute. I will often just sit in the whelping box with them, letting them play with my clothes, climb up on my lap, and generally just enjoying their carefree company. We also provide them with various toys starting at this age, and make sure that they listen to loud music, banging on the door, vacuum cleaner, etc. They weigh around 1. At first, they may not have a lot of success with it, as some of them try to suckle on the meat, but in a few days they master this new type of eating very well. We also continue giving them goats milk, but in a shallow saucer pan now, and with some rice baby cereal added, so that they can practice lapping. At this age, the mom is no longer so keen on constantly staying with her puppies, and only visits them to feed them and for a clean up. We continue changing the bedding twice a day now, knowing very well that in about a week it will become times a day, as the mom will not be able to keep up with her cleaning duties any more. We wash soiled towels with a little bit of bleach and a little bit of perfume-free detergent. Four weeks of age is even more fun as the puppies keep developing, but the amount of cleaning starts to increase in geometrical progression, and it becomes a full time job to keep the puppies well fed and clean. The mom is only visiting now and then at this point, and enjoys spending her time in the office, so that she can hear and see the puppies, but not necessarily be with them. With mom visiting for a few brief feedings each day, we feed them three times a day with the following diet: 1. Cottage cheese 2 tbsp per puppy , mixed with plain yogurt 1 tsp per puppy , evaporated goats milk, rice baby cereal 1 tsp. Raw tripe, or beef liver cooked with all kinds of vegetables At about 5 weeks of age the duty of keeping the whelping box clean becomes nightmarish, and this is a good time to introduce German Shepherd puppies to the outdoors. This is a room that is a part of the house, but has free access to the outside world. This room is equipped with a wooden resting platform so that puppies do not lay on concrete, with a heating lamp above it, and the floor is completely covered with a layer of pine woodchips. The outside area is about 6 x 6 ft and the floor is made of paving stones. There is another wooden laying platform here. This is a very important period when we introduce our German Shepherd puppies to more noises, show them the way in and out of the house, introduce them to the other dogs, play tug-of-war, etc. Also, we introduce raw frozen sardines and "The Honest Kitchen" products to their diet, and will occasionally feed kibble, soaked well in warm water and mixed with green tripe from a can At 3, 5, and 7 weeks of age our German Shepherd puppies get dewormed with a high quality wormer, to be certain that they are free of intestinal parasites. At about 6 weeks of age the puppies get their first combination 5-way vaccine including Parvo and Distemper , and at 7 weeks of age we start welcoming visitors who are interested to come and look at the puppies. Often during weekends we have several groups of visitors of all ages coming to interact with the puppies, which is such a great socialization opportunity for them. Copyright .All rights reserved.

Shih Tzu Poodle mix [Your complete guide to Teddy bear dog … If your shepherd has never met another dog, or is known to have a hard time being friendly with other dogs, it is possible they may not like a Shih Tzu. This is not a breed specific issue, but an issue of a lack of socialization. A socialized, friendly German Shepherd dog should have no problem getting along with a Shih Tzu! Shih Tzus, just like other dogs, need to be socialized at a young age to ensure an easy transition to life with another dog, like a shepherd. The Shih Tzu might feel like it needs to protect itself from a larger dog. Another reason why a Shih Tzu might not like a German Shepherd is because they may be territorial or dominant. If a dog is trying to show dominance over another, they may become aggressive. Your Shih Tzu may be doing this to a German Shepherd. It is not common for German Shepherds to just attack or even kill other dogs, even small ones. However, German Shepherds are a very territorial, protective breed. They may feel the need to attack or defend their territory if they feel threatened. Shepherds also have a strong prey drive. They may see a small dog like a Shih Tzu as something to hunt. If they are used to small dogs, they will know they are not a threat and not prey. This is true with all small dogs, including the Shih Tzu. Small dogs may go after big dogs because they want to prove they are tough, regardless of their size. The best way to stop fighting between your Shih Tzu and German Shepherd dogs is to prevent it from happening in the first place. If you notice your Shih Tzu or German Shepherd growling or showing dominant behavior toward the other dog, separate them. If a fight starts, you need to separate the dogs immediately. The SPCA has resources to teach you how to properly stop a dog fight once it begins. It may seem silly because of the size difference, but a German Shepherd can mate with a Shih Tzu! There are ongoing debates as to whether or not it is a good idea to mate big dogs with small dogs. Some experts say it is a bad idea because it increases the chance of health issues, while others say it combines the best of all the breeds involved. Due to the size difference, if the two breeds are to mate, the male has to be a Shih Tzu and the female has to be a German Shepherd. German Shepherds will get along with any dog if they are properly trained and socialized from a young age. Because of their size, if a German Shepherd is not well trained or socialized, they can be a danger to other dogs, especially small ones. It is up to the owner to make sure they get to know small dogs early on so they get along with them! If you can afford it, having two dogs is almost always better than having one. Dogs need companionship, a playmate and a sense of security. Having a pair of dogs takes some of the pressure off of you as an owner. There are proven benefits to having two Shih Tzus. They get along well together and because they will be the same size, the risk of injury during play time or the rare scuffle is much less. You can of course have a German Shepherd and a Shih Tzu in the same home. No matter what dogs you want to bring together, you will need to train and socialize them early. If you want to have a German Shepherd and a Shih Tzu, you can. However, it may be easier to have two Shih Tzus instead. For the most part, Shih Tzus are one of the least aggressive dog breeds. They are known for being cuddly, friendly dogs. However, there are always exceptions. Some aggressive behaviors you may see in your Shih Tzu could include growling and nipping at other dogs. However, because of their small size, you may find it best that they live with other small dogs. The best dog to live with a Shih Tzu is another Shih Tzu, because they will most likely have similar personalities and temperaments. German Shepherds are bred to be territorial guard dogs. Because of this, without the proper training, they can become aggressive towards other dogs. If your German Shepherd is raised around other dogs through classes, dog parks and other events, they are much less likely to be aggressive towards other dogs. The more you socialize your German Shepherd, the more they will get along with other dogs. German Shepherds are a large, high energy breed. Because of this, the best dogs to pair with them are other large, high energy breeds. If you have a German Shepherd and are planning on getting another dog, the best options include a Lab, Husky, Golden Retriever or other German Shepherd.
Learn more » Golden Retrievers are known for their long, silky, golden coats. Golden Retrievers can develop dry, flaky skin as a result of a number of conditions—one of them being ichthyosis. What Is Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers? Ichthyosis is a genetic disease affecting the skin of Golden Retrievers. Other breeds can be affected by this condition as well, however, they tend to develop a more severe form of the disease. Ichthyosis is caused by a genetic mutation. Scientists have identified two genetic variants that are associated with the disease. It is hypothesized that, as a result of the mutation, the cells in the outermost layer of skin, known as keratinocytes, do not form properly. This causes scaling and peeling of the skin. Ichthyosis shows an autosomal recessive pattern of inheritance. Therefore, the disease is not related to the sex of the dog, and both male and female Golden Retrievers can be affected. Therefore, for a dog to show signs of the disease, both its parents must carry the gene. The parents may have two copies of the mutated gene and, therefore, show signs of the disease and appear scaly. Althernatively, they may have one normal gene and one mutated gene, therefore appearing normal. A puppy may get one mutated gene from each parent and develop scaly skin, or it may get one mutated gene and one normal gene from each parent and look normal. In the latter scenario, the puppy becomes a carrier of the disease and it may pass on the mutated gene to its own puppies in the future. Golden Retrievers with ichthyosis have mild to moderate scaling of the skin , predominately on the trunk. The head, limbs, paw pads, and nose are usually not affected. There is no sex predilection for ichthyosis—both male and female dogs can be affected. The scales range in size from small to large, and vary in color from white to grey. The scales tend to be white in young dogs, and progressively blacken and become rough and dry with age. Affected dogs sometimes appear dirty, especially as the pigmented scales shed and adhere to the coat. The skin is usually not itchy or inflamed, but affected dogs may develop secondary yeast or bacterial infections as a result of the disease, which may result in inflammation and itching. Scaling may be seen within the first 3 weeks of life, but can also take up to 3 years for dogs to show any symptoms. The majority of affected dogs are diagnosed with this disease by one year of age. What is the Treatment for Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers? Treatment is tailored to the individual dog depending on its symptoms, and usually includes frequent brushing, medicated shampoos to remove scales, and moisturizing rinses. A diet rich in fatty acids may also be beneficial to reduce symptoms of the disease. If there are any secondary skin infections present, the dog will also need to receive treatment for those. Oral isoretinoin may also be effective at treating this disease. A study published in looked at the the effectiveness of oral isoretinoin in the treatment of ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers. Retinoids are a class of chemicals that are structurally and functionally related to vitamin A. Retinoids offer several benefits, including decreasing thickening and scaling of the skin, and are used to treat a form of ichthyosis that occurs in people known as Autosomal Recessive Congenital Ichthyoses ARCI. The study showed that oral isotretinoin was effective in improving ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers without any side effects. What is the prognosis? Although ichythosis is an incurable disease, it can be managed with commitment to the treatment plan. How is ichthyosis diagnosed in Golden Retrievers? The diagnosis can be confirmed with a biopsy of the skin. A biopsy is a procedure to remove a small section of tissue so that it can be examined under a microscope by a veterinary pathologist. Genetic testing is also available to identify the mutation responsible for the disease. The test will be able to tell if your dog is a carrier of the disease, even if it looks normal. My Golden Retriever has scaly skin. Does this mean they definitely have ichthyosis? There are many causes of scaling skin in Golden Retrievers other than ichthyosis. These should be ruled out before a diagnosis of ichthyosis is made. Image Credit: pixels, Shutterstock Final Thoughts Ichthyosis is a hereditary skin condition affecting Golden Retrievers that is caused by a genetic mutation. This mutation prevents the outer layer of the skin from developing properly, which causes the skin to scale and flake. Ichthyosis is an incurable disease but it can be managed with a combination of brushing , medicated shampoos , moisturizing rinses, and a diet high in omega 3s. Oral isoretinoin shows promise as a potential treatment for this disease. Additional Details Ichthyoses are a group of genetic skin disorders characterized by defects in the formation of the stratum corneum the outer layer of the epidermis that result in scaling of the skin and desquamation shedding of the outer layer of the skin, or more colloquially, skin peeling. In the Golden Retriever, symptoms of a breed-specific ichthyosis include mild to moderate, and in some cases severe, generalized scaling on the body, usually excluding the head, extremities, paw pads, and nose. The scales are initially a whitish color but becomes pigmented, progressing to gray or black, and they range in size from small to large. Age of onset is generally early: clinical signs have been detected as early as weeks of age in some dogs, although in others, the signs may not become readily apparent until months or even years later. Early symptoms of the disease may go unnoticed by owners due in part to their subtly and the less severe symptoms noted in the Golden Retriever when compared to other dog breeds. In humans, over 30 different genes that result in various ichthyoses have been identified. In dogs, at least 12 different breed-specific types of ichthyosis have been described, but genetic mechanisms have only been identified in a few breeds. An insertion-deletion variant often referred to as an indel in the patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing protein 1 PNPLA1 gene was identified as perfectly correlated with the congenital ichthyosis disease in Golden Retrievers. In total, Golden Retrievers were evaluated in the initial study and this variant was perfectly concordant with disease status, providing evidence that this variant is responsible for disease. Additionally, this variant was absent in healthy dogs from 25 other breeds. It is predicted that this variant also denoted as c. Though the exact consequences of this protein truncation are currently unknown, it is hypothesized that this defective PNPLA1 protein causes lipid defects and does not allow the proper formation of keratinocytes the cells in the epidermis that produce keratin in the outermost layer of skin. A study published in looked at 14 Golden Retrievers diagnosed with congenital ichthyosis that did not have the PNPLA1 variant and identified a second genetic variant strongly associated with congenital ichthyosis in the breed. The variant identified in the ABHD5 gene consists of a 14 bp deletion denoted as c. The study showed that the variant was only present in North American Golden Retrievers, being absent in over Golden Retrievers of European origin. The clinical and histological presentation of ICH2 is similar to that seen with ICH1, although the researchers noted that breeders reported more severe and adherent scaling with ICH2. Both types of congenital ichthyosis in the Golden Retriever are inherited in an autosomal recessive fashion. Two copies of either variant must be present for the disease to manifest, and both sexes are equally affected. Testing for this variant can assist veterinarians with diagnosis and helps breeders identify carriers among breeding stock to select appropriate mates that will reduce the risk of producing affected offspring. To avoid the possibility of producing affected puppies, matings between known carriers is not recommended. However, with the reportedly high frequency, it is advisable to select away from this mutation over several generations to assist in maintaining diversity. This assay does not detect the ichthyoses variants found in other breeds Type of Sample. Add To Cart Search Tests Common Symptoms Ichthyosis golden retriever type is an inherited condition of the skin affecting golden retrievers. The age of onset and severity of disease are highly variable, however most affected dogs present before one year of age with flaky skin and dull hair. Over time the skin develops a grayish color and appears thick and scaly, especially over the abdomen. While the prognosis is generally good for affected dogs, they are at increased risk for skin infections. Ichthyosis golden retriever type is inherited in an Autosomal Recessive manner in dogs meaning that they must receive two copies of the mutated gene one from each parent to develop the disease. In general, carrier dogs do not have features of the disease but when bred with another carrier of the same Mutation , there is a risk of having affected pups. Reliable genetic testing is important for determining breeding practices. Because some affected dogs exhibit very mild symptoms, genetic testing should be performed before breeding. In order to eliminate this mutation from breeding lines and to avoid the potential of producing affected pups, breeding of known carriers to each other is not recommended. Golden retrievers that are not carriers of the mutation have no increased risk of having affected pups. There may be other causes of this condition in dogs and a normal result does not exclude a different mutation in this gene or any other gene that may result in a similar genetic disease or trait. However, in other breeds it can be much more severe. The Golden Retriever Club of America says that it is a rare condition even though a high percentage of dogs are testing positive for it. A few breeders are making a big deal out of it. We, along with a growing number of other breeders are taking a middle of the road approach. We do the test and use the results in making good breeding decisions. At the same time, we feel that this is a minor issue and that there are many other concerns that are more important. Ichthyosis is doggy dandruff. When a dog has symptoms, those symptoms are usually a light flaking of skin. There can, however, be a wide range of possibilities with regard to the severity of the condition. Many I would venture to say most dogs that receive DNA results that indicate that they are affected with Ichthyosis have no flakes or any other kind of skin problem. Some dogs with Ichthyosis have a light flaking of skin, most noticable when brushing. It does happen at times, however, that Ichthyosis is bad enough for there to be a constant flaking of skin. Even then, it is more of a nuisance to the owner than a bother to the dog. A severe case could cause a dog to leave flakes of skin wherever he sits or lies. These cases are not common. By far, the majority of Golden cases are very mild. Ichthyosis is a Cosmetic Issue. It Is Not the Same as Allergies. Ichthyosis is not anything like allergies that many Golden Retrievers suffer from. Ichthyosis very rarely bothers a dog. Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers whether in its mildest form or its most severe is simply dandruff or flaky skin. However, brushing, mild shampoos and conditioners, and a diet high in fatty acids usually controls Ichthyosis well. I have heard of several affected dogs who had flakes to totally disappear after just a change in diet. They type dog food being fed greatly affects the expression of Ichthyosis. Ichthyosis is a recessive trait. This means that both parents have to carry the Ichthyosis form of this particular gene for expression of it. If either parent is clear, there is no chance of any puppies being affected. The DNA test can yield three different results: affected, carrier, and clear. This means that a DNA test will show them to be carriers of 2 copies of the gene. They could have clinical symptoms. A dog that is a carrier will have no chance of having the condition, either by DNA test or clinically. A carrier is simply a dog with only one copy of the defective allele for the gene. Statistics and Frequency of Ichthyosis in Golden Retrievers The statistics on the percentage of Goldens with Ichthyosis according to the DNA test would be quite disturbing if the statistics for the number of Goldens with actual symptoms matched those DNA statistics. There is, a huge difference between the two. What a difference in the statistics! There are links at the bottom of this article to the GRCA and to Antigene where you can read these statistics for yourself. Also, dogs with a positive DNA test but with no symptoms tend to produce symptom-free puppies. Keeping this fact in view is key in wisely using the DNA test. The more prudent approach to breeding away from Ichthyosis is to breed unclear dogs in lines who have clinical cases of Ichthyosis only to clear dogs, to pursue a goal of eliminating the condition all together over 6 -8 generations, to use the DNA test in making good breeding decisions, to continue doing the test and using the results wisely, to be open and honest to the public about what you have, and to use good common sense about it realizing that there are other issues in our breed that need greater attention. Ichthyosis in the Breed Over the Past 10 Years Starting 10 years ago when the test first came out, we at Summer Brook decided to test for Ichthyosis, but to not make it a priority. An affected diagnosis did not always or even usually mean a dog has a skin problem. Also, the number of English Goldens who had been tested that were clear made it unwise to put so much importance on this cosmetic issue. When the test first came out and I went looking for a suitable stud for my own Ichthyosis carrier, I found only 7 clear males in the entire country. Then, as I checked into these 7 males, I found that ALL of them were either too closely kin to my own girl or had other health issues that were far more problematic than ichthyosis. At that time, there were too many other more important considerations in deciding on a breeding. Ichthyosis Will Not Affect Summer Brook Puppies However, starting in , we had bred it out of most of our dogs and had mostly clear dogs with a few exceptions that were carriers. These carriers will never be bred to anything except a clear. Because Ichthyosis is carried on a recessive gene, there is no chance of a puppy being affected as long as at least one parent is clear. All of our breedings involve a clear parent. We have had two dogs with an affected DNA diagnosis in the past. Neither of these two past Summer Brook affected dogs had symptoms that anyone except for me was aware of. I saw a few flakes on one dog one time when she was pregnant and only saw them when I was grooming her. The other dog never had any symptoms whatsoever to my knowledge. However, since then, I have talked to many breeders who know of dogs with significant issues. All Summer Brook puppies are inside companions. Almost All Good Breeders Incorporate Ichthyosis Testing in Their Programs As testing has become more prevalent over the past years, more and more breeders are slowly weeding it out of their lines. Currently my advice for those looking for a Golden Retriever puppy is to only look at breeders that test for it and only from breedings where at least one parent is clear. As recently as sever or eight years ago, it was difficult to find such breedings. Today, most good breeders are including Ichthyosis as part of their normal testing protocol. View Larger Image Ichthyosis in golden retrievers Excessive scale or dandruff flakes Several breeds of dog, notably the Golden Retriever, Jack Russell Terrier and Bulldog, can be affected by excessive flaking of the skin. This is present from birth, but may be very mild, so is not noticed until later in life. The belly may also have darkly pigmented, dry skin. It does not tend to be itchy unless there is also infection present with bacteria and yeast. The changes in the skin make it easier for infections to take hold. Owners typically notice large flakes of skin present in the fur when brushing their dog, or on the floor in areas where they spend time. Golden Retrievers typically have a very mild form of this disease, whereas other breeds can be more badly affected. How do dogs get Ichthyosis? This disease is inherited and multiple puppies in a litter may have the disease. It has what is called a recessive mode of inheritance, which means that both parents must carry the gene for the puppies to show signs. The parents may have two disease genes and so are scaly themselves or one normal gene and one diseased gene, so they look normal. If the puppies in the litter get one disease gene from each of their parents they will be affected with the scaling disease, which can be seen when you look at them. Alternatively, if they just get one diseased gene and one normal gene, they will look normal but will be at risk of passing the disease on if they have puppies in future. Testing for Ichthyosis? There are many other causes of scaling in dogs, so these should be ruled out by a veterinarian before a diagnosis of ichthyosis is made. In Golden Retrievers there is a genetic test available, which is recommended if you are planning to breed your dog. This will tell you if your dog is a carrier of the disease, even if they look normal. By responsible testing and breeding, this disease can be avoided in future generations of puppies. Results are normally back in weeks. Treatment for Ichthyosis? Treatment is tailored to the needs of each individual dog. The scaling cannot be cured, but in many mild cases can be managed by conscientious bathing and moisturising. In more severe cases oral medication may be needed which can help but not cure the problem. Related Posts. It is an autosomal recessive genetic mutation; which means that when genetically tested a dog must have both recessive mutation traits to be affected. Symptoms Affected dogs cannot form the outer layer of the epidermis properly; this results in excessive flaking, discoloration, greasy spots and possible hardening of the skin. The darkening of the skin and flaking makes it appear dirty. Symptoms can exhibit in forms from mild to severe, as well as cycle depending on hormones and stress. Treatment Treat Ichthyosis with special shampoos, diet, and stress management. We have found keeping the skin dry and clean improves symptoms. Additional issues associated with Ichthyosis such as fungal infections and yeast overgrowth. If your dog is affected, see a veterinarian to help come up with a specific treatment plan for your dog. Carriers of Ichthyosis and Breeding A dog can have an Ichthyosis trait but not have symptoms. Carriers should only be bred to clear dogs; this guarantees that they only produce other carriers or clear dogs. Responsible breeders will not do this. However, it can be challenging to manage, and uncomfortable for the dog. With the genetic testing available responsible breeders should never knowingly produce an affected dog. Spread the word.

UKC Classification: Companion Dog Prevalence: Common The English bulldog is a brawny little powerhouse whose characteristic crablike waddle exudes great strength, stability and vigor. The dog's head is large and spherical, and the muzzle is extremely short, giving the face a flattened appearance. The English bulldog's eyes are dark and set low and wide on the forehead in the frontal plane. The nose is black and slightly upturned. The jaws or "chops" are massive, broad and undershot. The lower jaw juts out in front of the upper jaw to scarcely expose the lower incisors, producing a comical grin. The lips are fleshy and pendulous. The cheeks are well rounded and protrude sideways. The ears are thin, small and angle forward like flaps that frame the forehead. The English bulldog's neck is short and thick; the shoulders are massive, muscular and broad. The chest is deep and full, and the back is barreled and slightly arched. His rounded hips protrude slightly above the level of the back. The stubby tail is thick and either straight or screwed. His short, stocky legs have great muscle definition. They are splayed out and slightly bowed at the elbows and hocks to form a sturdy, base-wide stance. The English bulldog stands about 16 inches tall. The female weighs about 50 pounds 23 kilograms , and the male weighs about 54 pounds 24 kilograms. The English bulldog's skin is loose and pendant with heavy wrinkles and thick folds on the face and a dewlap hanging from the throat. The coat is short and fine textured. The various color patterns are brindle, piebald, and solid white, red, fawn or fallow. Personality: The English bulldog has a sweet, gentle disposition. Dependable and predictable, the bulldog is a wonderful family pet and loving to most children. People-oriented as a breed, they actively solicit human attention. However, they have retained the courage that was originally bred into them for bull baiting, so they make fine watchdogs. Although they generally get along well with other family pets, English bulldogs can be aggressive to unfamiliar dogs. Living With: English bulldogs make fine apartment pets and do not require a yard. Typically low-endurance dogs, they need only a moderate amount of exercise. They thrive best in temperate climates; they readily overheat and have breathing difficulties in hot weather, and they chill easily in cold temperatures. Generally loud breathers, English bulldogs tend to snore and wheeze. Many drool as well. They are moderate shedders and their short coats require little grooming. However, the wrinkles on the face should be wiped regularly to prevent skin infections. History: Named for its use in the sport of bull baiting, the English bulldog seems to have originated in the British Isles sometime prior to the 13th century. One of the few references to the sport dates back to , and talks about a butcher's dogs that chased a bull through the English town of Stamford. This pursuit so pleased the earl of the town that he inaugurated bull baiting as a sport in his domain. Today, the English bulldog makes a fine family pet. The AKC recognizes the breed simply as the bulldog. Related Pet Care Articles. Dog domestic dog The Bulldog is a British breed of dog of mastiff type. It may also be known as the English Bulldog or British Bulldog. It is a medium-sized, muscular dog of around 40—55 lb 18—25 kg. They have large heads with thick folds of skin around the face and shoulders, and a relatively flat face with a protruding lower jaw. The breed has significant health issues as a consequence of breeding for its distinctive appearance, including brachycephalia , hip dysplasia , heat sensitivity, and skin infections. Due to concerns about their quality of life, breeding Bulldogs is illegal in Norway and the Netherlands. The modern Bulldog was bred as a companion dog from the Old English Bulldog , a now-extinct breed used for bull-baiting , when the sport was outlawed in England under the Cruelty to Animals Act. While often used as a symbol of ferocity and courage, modern Bulldogs are generally friendly, amiable dogs. Bulldogs are now commonly kept as pets; in it was in twelfth place on a list of the breeds most frequently registered worldwide. The first reference to the word "Bulldog" is dated or in a letter by a man named Preswick Eaton where he writes: "procuer mee two good Bulldogs, and let them be sent by ye first shipp". This entailed the setting of dogs after placing wagers on each dog onto a tethered bull. The dog that grabbed the bull by the nose and pinned it to the ground would be the victor. It was common for a bull to maim or kill several dogs at such an event, either by goring, tossing, or trampling over them. Over the centuries, dogs used for bull-baiting developed the stocky bodies and massive heads and jaws that typify the breed, as well as a ferocious and savage temperament. Bull-baiting was made illegal in England by the Cruelty to Animals Act .However, emigrants did have a use for such dogs in the New World. In midth century New York, Bulldogs were used as a part of a citywide roundup effort led by Governor Richard Nicolls. Because cornering and leading wild bulls was dangerous, Bulldogs were trained to seize a bull by its nose long enough for a rope to be secured around its neck. Rockstro founded the first Bulldog Club. Three years after its opening the Club ceased to exist, not having organized a single show. Samuel Wickens, treasurer of the club, published this description in under the pseudonym Philo-Kuan. The first English Bulldog entered into the register was a male dog named Adam Adamo , born in .The founders of the club collected all available information about the breed and its best representatives and developed a new standard for the English Bulldog, which was published on 27 May , the same year they held the first breed show. Since , exhibitions of the club were held annually, except during the Second World War. On 17 May , the Bulldog Club was granted the status of a corporation and since then has carried the official name "The Bulldog Club, Inc. It is the oldest mono-breed dog kennel club in the world. King Orry was reminiscent of the original Bulldogs, lighter boned and very athletic. Dock Leaf was smaller and heavier set, more like modern Bulldogs. King Orry was declared the winner that year, finishing the mile 32 km walk while Dock Leaf collapsed and expired. Although not as physically capable as their ancestors, modern Bulldogs are much calmer and less aggressive. Note the "rope" over the nose, and pronounced underbite Bulldogs have characteristically wide heads and shoulders along with a pronounced mandibular prognathism. There are generally thick folds of skin on the brow; round, black, wide-set eyes; a short muzzle with characteristic folds called a rope or nose roll above the nose; hanging skin under the neck; drooping lips and pointed teeth, and an underbite with an upturned jaw. The coat is short, flat, and sleek with colours of red, fawn, white, brindle , and piebald. In the United Kingdom, the breed standards are 55 lb 25 kg for a male and 50 lb 23 kg for a female. These attributes should be countenanced by the expression and behavior". Bulldogs are recognized as excellent family pets because of their tendency to form strong bonds with children. At five to six years old, they start to show signs of aging. Those that died of old age had an average lifespan of 10 to 11 years. Left to right, the skulls are from approximately the s, s, and s. A study by the Royal Veterinary College found that Bulldogs are a much less healthy breed than average, with over twice the odds of being diagnosed with at least one of the common dog disorders investigated in the study. A degree of BOAS has been normalized in the breed, as an inevitable consequence of their distinctive face. Since dogs regulate heat primarily by panting, Bulldogs are very sensitive to heat; they may actually gain rather than lose heat due to their inefficient breathing, leading to a vicious cycle. Bulldogs must be given plenty of shade and water, and must be kept out of standing heat. If not properly exercised it is possible for a Bulldog to become overweight, which could lead to heart and lung problems, as well as stress on the joints. These cause the dog some discomfort, but are treatable either by vet or an experienced owner. Other problems can include cherry eye , a protrusion of the inner eyelid which can be corrected by a veterinarian , allergies , and hip issues in older Bulldogs. Due to the high volume of skin folds on the Bulldog's body, they have high prevalence of skin-fold dermatitis. Opposed by the British Bulldog Breed Council, it was speculated by the press that the changes would lead to a smaller head, fewer skin folds, a longer muzzle, and a taller thinner posture, in order to combat problems with respiration and breeding due to head size and width of shoulders. Among these is a fitness test where the dog has to walk 1 km 0. Its temperature and heart rate has to recover after 15 minutes. They are often used as mascots by universities, sports team, and other organizations. Reviews 0 The English Bulldog is a brave dog; which has a short coat, is a little heavy, short, broad, powerful and compact. It has characteristically thick shoulders and a big head in proportion to its body. It generally has wrinkles on its forehead. It is intelligent and docile, which makes it an excellent companion dog. In , this activity was banned in the United Kingdom. Currently, it is one of the symbols of England. Its origin dates back to the first stages of the century. It is thought that the English Bulldog breed appeared in the ancient Africa as a result of the cross between a kelb thal glieta, a smuggled breed in England, and ancient Mastiffs. It departed from there to England, where it started being very popular. At first, the Bulldog was taller and had a different appearance; but that changed because of the many crosses with diverse local dogs. As a result, our current Bulldog was born. Nowadays, it is a valued animal for beauty contests. It has a very big head in proportion to its body, which has loose and wrinkled skin. The snout is short, broad, and the lips are thick and drooping. Its legs are short, strong and muscular. The tail is straight and faces downwards. It has a fine, short and dense coat which tends to be one-color brindle with a mask. The English Bulldog may be of uniform but glossy colors, and pure like red and its different shades, like brindle, white and flecked. In the United States, the average weight of male adults is 22 kg, and 18kg for females. In the United Kingdom, its home country, the established weight for males is 25kg and for 22kg for females. There are 3 Standards with slight differences, but which could currently cause interpretation differences. Some dog breeds must have their tail docked after they are born, but Bulldogs are one of the few breeds which have a naturally short and curly tail. A long and lifted tail is an imperfection in the Bulldog. The FCI Standard of this breed says, regarding the tail: the absence of the tail, inverted tails, or very tightened are undesirable. Temperament: The English Bulldog is a dog with a fierce appearance but with an affectionate nature. It is very noble and calm. It tends to be patient and gets on well with children, but the little ones must be careful because this dog does not control its strength. Although it is not an aggressive dog, it is determined and watchful with strangers. The English Bulldog is a very intelligent dog, but it can be a little stubborn, which is why it may need an obedience training since it is a puppy. It does not respond to tough and negative methods; it learns faster if it is rewarded and trained patiently. Its eyes, wrinkles and ears must be cleaned regularly. An English Bulldog is not very resistant to heat it may have problems with warm weather and does not tolerate high temperatures. The English Bulldog is prone to have skin infections, and eye and respiratory diseases. It tends to snore. It easily adapts living in an apartment, as long as it has its daily walk. It must not do much exercise while exposed to high temperatures. Health: EThe English Bulldog suffers many congenital and hereditary conditions, such as cleft palate in puppies, hip dysplasia, limping in the back limbs, entropion and ectropion, dermatitis, stenosis in the nasal cavities and lengthening of the soft palate.

Although this breed is very popular, it is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club. As long as they are well-socialized, Miniature Goldendoodles tend to make excellent family companions. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Although they will alert you of strangers at the door, they tend to warm up quickly as they are more interested in making friends and receiving attention. Mini Goldendoodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their smaller size makes them a great fit for apartment living or for bigger homes with yards where they can run. As long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention, they can adapt well. These little dogs tend to do well in just about any climate. However, like any dog, they are sensitive to heat. Due to their smaller size, you may need to gear up with some dog-friendly winter gear when temperatures start falling. Because this dog breed is loyal and people-oriented, they love to be in your company and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. This means they can be prone to developing separation anxiety if you do not work with them on it early on. Instead, make sure your new Mini Goldendoodle puppy has an active role in your life. If you do need to leave them alone for a bit, make sure they have some comforting toys or challenging puzzles to keep them from getting bored. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. Make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of the parents. These traits make the Mini Goldendoodle one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and a good fit for owners of all experience levels. Daily brushing is recommended to remove tangles and prevent mats. Bathing is occasional and can often be relegated to the dog groomer that is recommended you visit every weeks. The groomer can help handle some of this during visits, but you will still need to do some maintenance at home between visits. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Weekly ear checks with careful cleanings as needed help prevent ear infections. Daily brushing, plus cleanings at the vet as needed, is good dental care for dogs and can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Although the parents of this breed have a lot of energy, a Mini Goldendoodle tends to sit in a more moderate activity range. Daily walks plus some playtime and time to run are usually enough for them. But, they are also likely to match their energy level to yours, so be prepared for some bursts of energy as well as plenty of cuddling on the couch. Fully-grown Mini Goldendoodles usually stand inches tall at the shoulder. A Miniature Goldendoodle puppy can vary in size based on the generation of the dog. The result is generally a dog that will range from pounds. Looking at the size of the parents for an F1 or F1-B puppy can be a good indication of what size to expect in a fully-grown Miniature Goldendoodle. Mini Goldendoodles generally live for years on average. Featured Mini Goldendoodle Article.

german shepherd puppies for sale in syracuse - These dogs have a striped pattern in conjunction with a different colored base. Fawn dates back to when the first fawn bully was recorded in England! This coat shade ranges from pale tan to a deep deer red. A white or platinum bulldog is completely white, from head to toe. However, freckles of different colors are still possible. Lilac is a rare color variety. The lilac English bulldog has had his color diluted twice: from black to brown and from black to blue. The result of this dilution is a wonderful shade of purple-lilac. Some lilacs could have a brown undercoat or frosty blue eyes. But, almost as a rule, their nose, eyeliner, and pads are purple. Black is another rare coat variety. These bullies have a brown undercoat, while the topcoat is shiny black. The pads, nose, and eyeliner are also deep black. Another black bully variation is black tri a black and white coat with tan-colored points. The pads, nose, and eyeliner are slate grey, while the coat shines grey under the sunlight. A chocolate bulldog is another rare example. They got this color because of the bb genotype. Their coats have the most beautiful deep chocolate-brown color, while the pads, nose, and eyeliner could be a chocolate or liver hue. Seal colored bulldogs are probably the rarest of them all. The coat is red or brown cast, with light-colored eyes and a dark stripe down their backs. The legs and tail are usually darker than the rest of the body. The tri-colored bulldogs have three colors in a specific pattern. The points of a third color are usually displayed in a shade of fawn or golden brown, above their eyes, on the cheeks, chest, and inner front legs. These spots might be familiar under the name tan points. Lilac is the combo gene — full blue and full chocolate combined. The first dilution is by the chocolate gene and the second one by the blue gene. The bb dilutes black to brown, and then the dd dilutes black to blue. When you mix the brown and blue, you will get the specific lilac shade. The lilac coat resembles much the one a grey Weimerainer carries. It should be shiny with as many dark and light shades as possible. Some might even have an undercoat that shines pink or green, depending on the light. If you do, then fortune has smiled upon you. But, the rare colors are much more pricey! We want to make your dreams come true. Leelynn's wants you to feel like more than just a customer, we want you to feel like a part of our bulldogge family. Temperament Olde English Bulldogges are docile, but capable and protective, fearless and athletic, fierce-looking, determined and courageous, bold and friendly around their family and friends, but fearless adversaries to anyone who threatens their masters or property. This breed likes to chew and should be supplied with plenty of toys and bones. Nylabones and rubber Kong toys are highly recommended. Rawhides, soft rubber and stuffed toys are unsafe, for they are easily shredded or swallowed whole. Olde English Bulldogges are so eager to please that they may overexert themselves in an effort to do whatever is asked of them. An owner who displays a natural authority toward the dog, socialization and obedience training are important. It is best to channel high energy individuals to some type of work and exercise. The objective in training this dog is to achieve pack leader status. It is a natural instinct for a dog to have an order in its pack. When we humans live with dogs , we become their pack. The entire pack cooperates under a single leader. Lines are clearly defined and rules are set. Because a dog communicates his displeasure with growling and eventually biting, all other humans MUST be higher up in the order than the dog. The humans must be the ones making the decisions, not the dogs. That is the only way your relationship with your dog can be a complete success. This breed tends to drool and slobber. Height, Weight Height: Males 17 - 20 inches 43 - 51 cm Females 16 - 19 inches 40 - 48 kg Weight: Males 60 - 80 pounds 27 - 36 kg Females 50 - 70 pounds 22 - 31 kg Health Problems May be susceptible to bloat —a painful and often fatal condition that can be brought on by too large a quantity of food consumed at one time. As with all large breeds, hip dysplasia sometimes occurs. Breeders are working hard to keep it out of the Olde English Bulldogge; therefore, no dog with bad hips is bred. Living Conditions Olde English Bulldogges will adapt to almost any lifestyle. They should be protected from the extreme cold and heat, although they are not as susceptible as the AKC Bulldog. Exercise This breed needs to be taken on a daily pack walk to satisfy its migration instinct. When properly conditioned they can be active dogs, however, they are equally happy with moderate exercise. They can stay in relatively good shape with good muscle tone with only light exercise. These dogs are naturally slow, and because of their unique structure, they should not be encouraged to jump or engage in strenuous exercise as young pups. This breed is an average shedder. In he became disenchanted with English Bulldogs due to their breeding and breathing problems. David's goal was to produce a dog with the looks of the 18th century bulldog, with the temperament of today's English Bulldogs, yet healthy, without breathing problems, or all the other aliments today's English Bulldogs are prone to. This new breed can now breathe. Cesarean section births are not necessary. Artificial insemination, due to male ineptness and lack of drive, has been replaced by natural ties. Lifespan is over eleven years. All breeding stock has had hip x-rays. No dog with bad hips is bred. David says he is now achieving his goal of producing a Bulldog with the health and temperament to be able to serve people, instead of forcing people to serve him.
