Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article. Look no further! While both the Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle require lots of exercise, the Sheepadoodle requires more. Compare the Bernedoodle. Both dog breeds are excellent family dogs, but each has unique characteristics that might sway your selection one way or the other. Here are the seven key differences between Bernedoodles and Sheepadoodles to consider when reserving one of these designer dog breeds. Parent Breeds and History The Sheepadoodle is a hybrid of a poodle and an Old English sheepdog, while a Bernedoodle combines a poodle with a Bernese mountain dog. Sheepadoodles were initially bred as companion dogs in the s, with the idea that the poodle would give the Old English sheepdog a hypoallergenic coat. The Bernedoodle is a more common but much newer breed. Finding the perfect puppy is hard and the perfect breeder — even harder See what Doodle Pups we have for you! Conversely, Sheepadoodles can weigh from 45 to 80 pounds and are usually 13 to 24 inches tall. Bernese mountain dogs are bigger than the average English Sheepdog, so it makes sense that their hybrid breed is also bigger. However, Bernedoodles puppy for sale come in mini sizes with a miniature Poodle parent, as well as medium and standard sizes when bred with a standard Poodle. You may also consider a mini Sheepadoodle, a crossbreed of a Sheepdog and a Toy Poodle. Reputable breeders can provide more information about the purebred parents so you can estimate whether the puppies will grow up to be smaller or larger dogs. Sheepadoodle coats are usually red and white, gray and white, or black and white. Their fur also tends to fade to white as they age, which is a poodle trait. Bernedoodles offer all options of straight, wavy or curly hair. Sheepadoodles only have course, curly hair. If you struggle with mild to moderate allergies, we highly suggest getting a wavy coat Bernedoodle. Get Started Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle Personality Both these doodle breeds are hybrids with working dogs, so they need a lot of activity. However, Bernedoodles tend to be calmer and more relaxed than Sheepadoodles, especially when they get out of the puppy stage. They need less exercise compared to a Sheepadoodle. Sheepadoodles are usually the higher-energy doodle of the two dog breeds, requiring lots of mental and physical stimulation. However, they can develop separation anxiety when left alone for too long. They do well as emotional support animals since they develop a strong bond with humans. Early socialization is essential for these dogs since they have watchdog tendencies. The Bernedoodle and the Sheepadoodle do well with younger kids and other animals. Bernedoodle and Sheepadoodle owners report that their pets are good with small children. Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle Health Conditions Breeders conduct careful health testing to make sure both purebred parent dogs are free of underlying genetic concerns. However, dogs in the doodle family do have some common health issues. Large dogs may develop joint problems with age, but a good diet and lots of exercise can help them lead healthier lives. Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle: Temperament When it comes to character, there are some important distinctions between the two types of Doodles. Bernedoodle owners tend to describe their pups as gentle, loving, and caring. These are qualities that they inherit from the calmer Bernese. In fact, Bernies are generally known as being fairly low-energy dogs on the Doodle spectrum, at least. They have more laid-back personalities and often just go with the flow. However, be sure not to forget that watchdog part of their nature. Sheepadoodles, with their herding instincts, are a little more high-energy — although Doodling them has mellowed them out somewhat. It has also made them easier to train than their OES ancestors. Nevertheless, they are still great fun to be active and exercise with. People with Sheepas often describe them as playful and silly. Yet, just like Bernies, they can be a little on the protective side. However, this usually manifests itself in slightly different ways. For example, if you fail to take the lead in this relationship, you might find yourself or your children being wrangled up and hustled about by a bossy hound. While this is the most popular coat type, Bernedoodles can also have solid, parti, and merle-colored coats. The latter one especially is becoming more and more highly prized. See Also: Click the image Sheepadoodles, on the other hand, are usually just two colors — most often black and white, but sometimes grey and white, or red and white. Sheepas are also more likely to fade in color as they age — a phenomenon that perhaps can be explained by the Poodle Fading Gene. The reason for this is that hair is still shed, but rather than ending up on your floor or furniture, it becomes tangled up with healthy hair causes knots and even matting. Both Bernese and OES have incredibly thick, double coats that are prone to shed. The OSE, in particular, is known to be an extremely heavy shedder. So, if your Sheepadoodle does get this kind of fur, they will need frequent brushing to keep it off your floor and furniture. Finally, the third and to us best coat kind is the wavy in-between one. There could be issues with both shedding and tangling with this hair type, but these problems are much reduced. For this reason, this coat needs much less brushing — two to three times a week compared to daily with either of the above. They are still susceptible to some of the same canine health issues based on size and breed , but a lot less so. However, the first thing you need to do to ensure you have a dog that is in super good health is to purchase them from a reputable breeder. They will not only have tested the parent pups to ensure there are no heritable diseases , but they will also make sure the puppies themselves are in the very best of health before they go on to their forever homes. Standard-sized Sheepadoodles and Bernedoodles could both have problems with their joints due to their larger size. A healthy, well-balanced diet of high-quality kibble and plenty of exercise walking rather than running can help with this. As can a nicely cushioned bed. Sheepadoodles can suffer from ear infections , entropion eyelids rolling inwards , heart conditions, and skin problems. So these are all things to chat to your vet about. In terms of wellness, Doodles as clever, active dogs need plenty of stimulation. This includes at least 60 minutes of physical activity per day — walks, games, and the opportunity to play with toys. Sheepadoodle vs Bernedoodle: Lifespan As Doodles are super healthy dogs, they often enjoy a much longer lifespan than other types. If well looked after, both Bernedoodles and Sheepadoodles tend to do well throughout their lives, maintaining a good level of health and activity. Related Content Both Doodle types can live until years of age. However, the rule is that smaller dogs tend to outlive larger ones, so Toys, Minis, and Mediums will likely have a longer lifespan than Standards. However, start a little too late and you could encounter a few issues. The exact nature of these differs depending on the specific nature of the dog in question. That, coupled with all their natural strength, can make them a bit of a handful for novice owners. Issues with socialization only serve to make matters worse when it comes to these cautious dogs. Sheepadoodles are usually a little easier for newbies to control. They are incredibly obedient pups, making them pretty effortless to train at any time… just as long as you keep things interesting. These dogs really do have an endless appetite for play, so make training a game, and it will be a breeze. In the home, the bigger Bernedoodle does surprisingly better in a smaller space. They are also better behaved when meeting new people and animals as long as they have been thoroughly socialized, of course. For training tips and tricks, check out our article Obedience Training for Dogs: Mastering the Basics. The initial expense, however, is not the only one to consider. You also need to factor in food, grooming, and vet costs. It goes without saying that the larger the dog, the more food they will eat — so there is not much difference between Doodle types here. Things can get pricy with the woolen coat if you let it get all matted up. Plus, the groomer will likely have to shave your dog. Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle: Family Friendliness Probably one of the key questions you will have about these dogs, especially if you have young children , is how family-friendly they each are. Well, most Doodles are extremely family-friendly — after all, the breeds were picked for Doodling for a reason. More often than not, they adore kids and enjoy playing with them for hours at a time. See Also: Click the image In a recent survey we conducted where Doodle owners were asked to rate different aspects of their pets, Bernedoodles were consistently rated excellent when it came to how they were around the family. That being said, you should always closely supervise children playing with any dog. Sheepadoodles are just as friendly, but their herding nature, coupled with their energy levels, may mean they are better suited to a house with older children and teenagers rather than younger kids. Sheepas are super affectionate dogs, but their working background could also make them more likely to nip. Bernedoodle vs Sheepadoodle: Which is the Puppy for You? One is absolutely no better than the other. However, each type of Doodle has specifics that may make them more suited to you and your family. Opt for a Bernedoodle if you: Have limited space. Lead a more sedentary lifestyle. Have plenty of experience training large dogs. Are willing to pay a little more Have younger children in the house A Sheepadoodle might be more appropriate if you: Have plenty of space in your home, including a lovely big garden. Like going on family hikes, trips, and adventures with your dog. Are more of a newbie dog owner. Prefer to pay a little less for a puppy. Have older children or teenagers. Wednesday, January 2 Vestibular Disease and French Bulldogs Part Two Many adult dogs experience an episode that looks like a seizure or a stroke, and we are concerned that some Frenchies are being euthanized needlessly due to misdiagnosis. Vestibular disease presents suddenly. One minute your dog is running around or chewing a toy, and the next minute she can't stand up or remain standing, or she can't focus her eyes, and they are moving back and forth quickly in a motion called nystagmus. Her head may tilt either immediately or sometime later in the hours or days following the initial event. She may drool. She may panic. If you are like most people, you will almost certainly panic. Try to stay calm and take her to the vet as soon as you can. Deo suffered from vestibular disease. In this photo you can see his head tilt and his left eye is a little less bright because of facial paralysis on that side. Here's what is happening: your dog has lost her sense of balance. She can't figure out her relationship to the ground and that's why she's staggering. Most episodes are "idiopathic" which means nobody knows what causes them. Some speculate that there is a tiny blood clot in the area of the brain that affects balance, and as it dissolves, the condition resolves. But there is no agreement about what it causes it, and there may be a number of possible causes that result in the same set of symptoms. FBRN grad Eva had a bout of vestibular disease, too. She's not suspiciously squinting at you in this photo. Like Deo, she had some facial paralysis on the left side of her face. She's much better now. Vestibular disease, stroke, and brain tumors can share symptoms. Vestibular disease is a far more likely diagnosis than the other two, which is very good news. Your vet may suggest an MRI to rule out a brain tumor, but most vets will suggest you take your dog home, be sure she's eating and drinking well, and watch for signs of recovery, which should happen in a few days or a week. Frida's experience with vestibular disease was very helpful to Eva's owner as she navigated the diagnostic process. Did you know there are Internet support groups for virtually every medical condition a dog might have? In the days following the initial event, some dogs also experience facial paralysis, and the paralysis can be either obvious or subtle. Many dogs develop a head tilt, which may resolve in a few days, or a month, or never. Most dogs do recover within a month or so. As the days pass following the initial event, you may find that your dog is not interested in eating. If you had the spins, you probably would not want to eat, either, but some dogs respond well to anti-nausea meds or to hand-feeding. Some people suggest that while your dog is recovering from the worst of it, you leave a light on, so she can find an object and orient herself to it even in the night. His family wrote to us and asked us to do this report on VD. Vestibular disease happens most oftens in dogs who are 6 years old and older, but some young dogs have had vestibular disease--Deo and Maxwell Smart were on the young side, while Eva was a senior dog when she had it. Watching a dog have a seizure or experience a stroke or the symptoms of vestibular disease is very frightening, and it can be heartbreaking. Try to keep your head, and try to remember that what looks like a stroke or a seizure may well be something far less worrisome and will often resolve completely or nearly so. Posted by. The head tilt is a cute canine maneuver that gives the impression your pup is paying attention to you. And they typically tilt their heads consistently to the same side. Data was collected during the Genius Dog Challenge, a series of experiments that were broadcast on social media, showing dogs retrieving their toys by name. The information was also collected during an earlier study that researched how some dogs are able to learn the names of many of their toys. They also created the Genius Dog Challenge , a research project and social media campaign, to find even more brilliant pups. They found six border collies that live in different countries, who all learned toy names just while playing with their owners. For the challenge, these gifted word learners had a week to learn the names of six toys. During the second stage, they had a week to try to learn the names of a dozen toys. The dogs sat or stood in front of their owners when they were asked to fetch one of the toys by pronouncing its name. The results were published in the journal Animal Cognition. Choosing Sides Dogs, horses, and other animals—including humans—show asymmetry in the way they perceive the world around them. They prefer one ear, eye, hand or paw over the other when interacting with the environment. Most of us are right-handed but there are still left-handed people around. For instance, in dogs, even the inclination their tails have when they're wagging is a sign of asymmetrical behaviour. What About Typical Dogs? But their results are limited because they only studied these brilliant pups who have learned toy names. Neurology Head Tilt in Dogs: A Clinical Approach Head tilt in dogs is a clinical presentation that most veterinarians encounter frequently in practice, most often due to dysfunction of the vestibular system. June 8, Michelle B. Carnes interned at University of Missouri-Columbia. She has been published in several peer-reviewed journals and provides continuing education seminars nationally. She also has a special interest in non-invasive advanced imaging procedures of the brain and spinal cord, specifically high-field MRI. Read Articles Written by Michelle B. When a patient presents for evaluation of a head tilt, it can sometimes be challenging to know the best course of diagnostics to recommend and whether or what primary treatment is warranted. Differentiation of the varied clinical presentations of vestibular disease and how they relate to the generation of a list of differential diagnoses can be extremely helpful in providing appropriate primary care and being able to better predict possible outcomes. Evaluating a Head Tilt: Differentiating the varied clinical presentations of vestibular disease can help in providing appropriate primary care. The primary reason for a dog to exhibit a head tilt is dysfunction of the vestibular system. From a clinical perspective, it is divided into two components: peripheral, which involves the vestibulocochlear nerve cranial nerve VIII and its receptor in the inner ear; and central, which involves the brainstem and sometimes the cerebellum. Basic Review of Neuroanatomy The receptor organ of the vestibular system is located within the petrous temporal bone in the inner ear and consists of the saccule, utricule and crista ampularis within the semicircular canal FIGURE 2. Through movement of the hair cells bathed in endolymph, the position and movement of the animal as it relates to gravity is detected and then transmitted by cranial nerve VIII vestibulocochlear nerve to the vestibular nuclei in the brainstem. Provision of extensor tone to the muscles to support the body against gravity via the vestibulospinal tract. Conscious perception of position via the thalamus to the somatosensory cortex of the forebrain. Coordination of movement of the eyes, head, trunk and extremities in relation to movement or static position via the caudal cerebellar peduncle to the cerebellum. Influence of the vomiting center in the reticular formation as a consequence of motion sickness. Anatomy of the canine external, middle and inner ear. Step 1: Determine the Neuroanatomic Localization Once a head tilt has been identified, the next step is to perform a complete neurologic examination of the patient to determine if the vestibular dysfunction is peripheral, central or paradoxical. Paradoxical vestibular disease refers to a distinct localization to the cerebellum: specifically, the caudal cerebellar peduncle or the flocculonodular lobe2 that result in slightly different clinical signs than typical peripheral or central vestibular disease. On the contrary, dogs with central vestibular disease are more likely to have a more dull mentation, conscious proprioception deficits and one or more cranial nerve deficits. Postural reaction deficits are the most important indicator of central disease; and deficits in cranial nerve V to XII are the most likely. Below is a brief discussion of some of the more common diseases seen in clinical practice. It is important to note that an intact tympanic membrane does not rule out OMI; in fact, infection most commonly results from 1 a descending infection from otitis externa, 2 hematogenous spread of microorganisms or 3 extension of microorganisms from the pharynx via the auditory tube. Treatment is antibiotic therapy, ideally based on culture and sensitivity, and supportive care. Recognition and prompt treatment of this complication can result in a good prognosis for recovery. Note the elevated third eyelid, miosis and mild ptosis. Enophthalmos, which is often present, is not appreciated in this photograph. Idiopathic Vestibular Disease Idiopathic vestibular disease is reported to be the second most common cause of peripheral vestibular disease in the dog. There is typically a peracute onset with affected animals showing clinical improvement within a few days and near complete resolution within 3 to 4 weeks. Though the cause of idiopathic vestibular disease is unknown, there is consideration that the cause may be due to a viral infection of the vestibular nerve. Post-contrast axial image of the canine brain at the level of the caudal brainstem. Note the contrast enhancement of the right lateral aspect of the medulla red arrow. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism has been implicated as a cause for both peripheral and central vestibular disease in dogs. The pathogenesis of hypothyroid-associated vestibular disease has been described as a component of polyneuropathy or as myxedematous disease causing nerve compression cranial nerve VIII and sometimes cranial nerve VII as they exit the skull through the internal acoustic meatus. Thyroid hormone supplementation typically results in improvement within a few months. Ototoxicity Peripheral vestibular signs may develop if the ear has been flushed with any routine cleaning solution if the tympanum is ruptured. Clinical signs of vestibular disease may develop rapidly as soon as 10 minutes. Within 3 days to 3 weeks, central compensation results in gradual improvement of clinical signs; the compensation is maximal after about 3 months. The head tilt, however, may still be obvious and permanent. Chlorhexidine solutions can significantly contribute to ototoxicity and should be avoided if the status of the tympanum is unknown. Aminoglycoside antibiotics parenteral or topical can affect the hair cells, flocculonodular lobe and fastigial nucleus; streptomycin tends to have vestibular effects, whereas neomycin, gentamycin, kanamycin, and vancomycin tend to have more effect on the auditory system. In addition, loop diuretics, cisplatin and propylene glycol have also been implicated as potentially ototoxic. Female, small breed dogs 4 to 8 years of age are predisposed, and diagnosis is based on MRI and, cerebrospinal fluid analysis, with or without infectious disease testing. Treatment involves immune suppression with glucocorticoids plus a chemotherapy drug cytarabine arabinoside, procarbazine or immunomodulating drug cyclosporine, leflunomide. Aggressive long-term treatment is necessary, and the prognosis is guarded. Diagnosis is based on history and clinical signs. Treatment includes cessation of metronidazole therapy and supportive care. It has been shown that diazepam administration 0. A careful history should be taken, including rate and duration of onset, whether the signs have progressed since onset, medications administered, diet, travel history, and existence of any other comorbidities. Physical exam should include a complete otoscopic exam and complete neurological examination to determine if the patient localizes to peripheral or central disease. A minimum database, including complete blood count, serum chemistry, blood pressure and thoracic with or without bullae radiographs, are recommended. If systemic infectious disease is suspected, serum titers or polymerase chain reaction for likely organisms TABLE 2 can be performed. In patients where peripheral vestibular disease is suspected, additional diagnostic considerations may include myringotomy with culture and sensitivity and a complete thyroid panel thyroxine, free T4 and thyroid-stimulating hormone based on clinical suspicion. For patients that localize to central vestibular disease or those that are not improving with initial therapy, advanced imaging ideally MRI of the head and possible cerebrospinal fluid analysis are highly recommended. Symptomatic treatment is often beneficial as many patients that have vestibular disease experience varied degrees of severity of clinical signs including nausea, anorexia, anxiety, recumbency, circling, falling and rolling. For dogs that are mildly affected, meclizine, an antiemetic and antivertigo drug, is indicated. Other antiemetics such as maropitant, ondansetron or chlorpromazine can also be considered. Patients more severely affected will benefit from parenteral fluid therapy and intensive nursing care in an inpatient setting. During periods of severe vertigo i. Following the acute phase of vertigo, physical rehabilitation appears to aid in the recovery of ambulation and is recommended. Summary Head tilt in dogs is generally mediated through dysfunction of the vestibular or cerebellovestibular system. Careful attention to history, progression of disease and a complete neurological examination, especially postural reaction testing and a cranial nerve examination, is paramount. Localization of whether the vestibular disease is of peripheral or central origin is essential to the accurate formation of a differential diagnoses for the patient. The underlying cause may be simple or more complex, with peripheral disorders typically carrying a better overall prognosis. Vestibular System: Special Proprioception. She shows no signs of discomfort,, is eating well and has normal energy level. The vet suspects inner ear infection and prescribed 8 days of cefaseptin mg. Looking back, I wonder if she might have had an inner or middle ear infection for a long time. She used to scratch at her ear somewhat frequently but there was never any obvious sign of ear infection such as drainage or odour, or signs of discomfort. She is on day 5 of an 8 day course of antibiotics. Should I take her for an MRI if the antibiotic does not result in any improvement? Affected dogs typically show sudden loss of balance, collapsing, disorientation, head tilt and flickering of the eyes nystagmus. These signs can be quite dramatic for owners and dogs alike, so this disease represents a serious welfare concern. Researchers at the Royal Veterinary College analysed the anonymised veterinary clinical records in the VetCompass programme from over , dogs across the UK. They found dogs had received veterinary care for vestibular disease during the study. Compared with crossbreed dogs, French Bulldogs were 9 times more likely to develop vestibular disease, whilst Bulldogs were over 6 times more likely. These findings add to a growing body of evidence on high count of diseases that are predisposed in French Bulldogs and Bulldogs and that suggest these breeds have important welfare issues. The following breeds were also at increased risk compared with crossbreeds: King Charles spaniels 5 times , Cavalier King Charles spaniels 4 times and Springer spaniels 3 times. Despite the dramatic clinical signs shown by dogs with vestibular disease, there is some good news from the study. Many of the affected dogs that are diagnosed with vestibular disease have a high chance of improving after an average of 4 days, as this study shows. The most common presenting signs seen in the affected dogs were head tilt, flickering of the eyes nystagmus , and ataxia. Therefore, owners may be encouraged to trial treatment which is generally affordable and to monitor for signs of recovery which are often seen within a few days after diagnosis in a great proportion of cases.
