First off, Boxers are the absolute best family members imaginable. Luke and I gained our first boxer family member in .From the very beginning, we were hooked! We then gained our newest addition, Diva and boy does her name fit her well! We were overjoyed with our family fur-members and wanted to provide joy to other families. That is when we decided we wanted to breed Boxers and bring love and happiness to other families, just as our Boxers brought love and happiness into ours. Our family continued to grow, as did our happiness and joy! We now have 8 boxers and one spayed boxer mix. All are our fur-kids come first and foremost! Diva and Sergeant had their first litter in .Since then, we have learned so much about the breed and about producing healthy puppies. A lot of thought and research goes into each and every breeding. In the early part of , we started showing. This was such a new experience for us, but we enjoyed it so very much! Bailey was our first girl to show and she had a blast! Her face would light up when trotting around the ring. She obtained her International and National Champion Title that weekend and we were so very proud of her! It was not hard to see that this was something he enjoyed so very much! We couldn't wait to get them back out there for the next show! In September of , we went to 2 shows! The first show was a UKC show. Captain and Bailey competed and had a blast. Captain obtained his UKC Champion. Bailey obtained all of the points needed and is now only waiting for her competition wins. We cant wait to call her a UKC Champion too! Captain gained his National, International and Honors Ch. At only 3 months old, Dawn made it to Best of Show during this show! It is the best feeling in the world to see the smiles on their faces and their eyes lighting up! They all had a blast! Captain obtained his Honors Bronze Champion Title. Both girls did well. They both won first in each of their classes and Dawn won Reserve Best of Breed in all four shows. We were unable to attend due to puppies being at home, but didnt want the girls to miss out on a great weekend of showing! Dawn got first in class for all three shows. Benelli got first in class all three shows. Benelli also got Reserve Best Female in two show and Best female in one show. For being at a show without mama and dad, the girls did so good! Im so proud of them and a special thanks to Angie for talking the girls! We look forward to the upcoming shows and we are so very excited!! Some may appear to have a habit of doing this… with others, owners wonder why a Boxer that never previously did that suddenly begins to. There are actually a few different reasons for why a dog - and in particular a Boxer puppy or dog - does this and we'll dive into the various reasons. While some explanations are completely harmless, there are some medical reasons for this happening - including some rather serious ones, so if your Boxer puppy or dog does display this behavior, be sure to keep reading on. In this section, we will discuss the following types of behaviors and what could be referred to as an idiosyncrasy in some cases: Head shaking as a harmless behavior Head shaking as a sign of medical issues Head shaking tremors Is it Just a Harmless Behavior? In many cases, this is just a matter of attention seeking behavior, which in and of itself is completely harmless and often amusing. Boxers learn quickly what gets your attention. They are swift students when it comes to figuring out what will wake you up or what will bring about a smile or a laugh. Some behaviors and actions are a way of saying, "Hey, do you see me here? You can certainly take a flashlight and try to see if you can spot the culprit, but due to how the ear canal is shaped it curves almost like an L shape and the fact that a foreign object will cause swelling that closes up the canal somewhat it may be impossible to know if something is indeed stuck in there. If you can spot something, cleaning the ears in the same way that you clean for excess wax will work in some cases more on this ahead. In others, the vet will need to be called. Excess Wax - All dogs have ear wax, just like humans do. It works to trap dust and debris. And sometimes in response to triggers, a dog will overproduce wax. This will clog the canal and lead to head shaking. Even if your Boxer never had a problem with this before, it may be time to make ear cleaning a regular part of your dog's grooming routine. Ear mites - The specific problem of ear mites which need to be treated with certain topicals. Other Issues - When it comes to continuous head shaking, there are a slew of issues that may be the cause. These range from ear infections to polyps to mites. No matter the cause for the head shaking… allergies, mites, infection and so on, the sooner you obtain professional veterinarian care, the easier it is to resolve the problem and the less your Boxer dog will suffer discomfort. Head Shaking Tremors Now that we have already touched on attention seeking behavior and some medical issues that can usually be resolved with a vet visit, it is time to talk about a rather enigmatic and most certainly troubling issue: Boxer dog head tremors in which the head moves in a bobbing motion. There are 2 main reasons for this: Idiopathic head tremors and Paroxysmal Dyskinesia. With Idiopathic head tremors, unfortunately the 'idiopathic' part of that means 'cause unknown'. With Paroxysmal Dyskinesia, this is a condition of involuntary movements that are NOT related to seizures… And there is no known cure. With both of these issues, much more research needs to be done and a Boxer should have a complete physical and blood work to rule out seizures. Tests should include testing for calcium and glucose levels, checking liver enzymes, platelets counts and albumen. In addition, taking a video of your Boxer during a head tremor episode will assist the veterinarian in making a diagnosis. With this issue, the Boxer dog's head moves very rapidly, essentially bobbing and this can be side to side or up and down. The dog has no control over this and it can come on suddenly, often leading owners to panic as they see their Boxer stuck in this sort of tremor. With both Idiopathic head tremors and Paroxysmal Dyskinesia, the little research that has been done shows that there is no damage or harm that comes to the Boxer. Many Boxers are aware of their surroundings and even able to listen to commands during an episode of head tremors. They do not appear to be in pain and some do not even seem aware that their head is shaking or bobbing. With Paroxysmal Dyskinesia, there may also be visible shaking in the neck muscles. With both conditions, the typical time that shaking lasts is 3 minutes. This sort of issue may begin at any age and affects puppies as much as it does older, adult dogs. Neither condition is necessarily chronic; with many Boxer dogs the condition may be acute, resolving on its own as suddenly as it began. Treatment As mentioned above, do have your Boxer's veterinarian rule out Boxer dog seizures … and it will be important to have an experienced, reputable vet for this since some vets incorrectly diagnose head tremors as seizures and put dogs on phenobarbital. The phenobarbital does not resolve the issue AND with long term use it can cause liver damage. It is highly recommended to keep a detailed journal to log exactly when the head shaking occurs. This can be incredibly helpful as you may see a pattern develop. The range of triggers for this sort of episode varies wildly - BUT once an owner pinpoints the trigger, it can often be avoided. Even if an owner is not able to pinpoint an exact cause, there are some steps that one can take that for many Boxers, has shown to bring about improvement. This includes: Changing a Boxer's main diet. Even with a high quality brand, you just never know which particular ingredient may be causing such a baffling issue. Therefore, switching brands or trying some healthy homemade recipes could make a huge difference. Higher dosage of Vitamin B Complex - While there are no official studies showing that this is a cure, many owners have reported this to work in reducing the frequency of head bobbing and tremors. A SLIGHT increase in calcium supplements - Upping calcium slightly has proven effective for many Boxer puppies and dogs, however do take care as calcium overload can bring about other negative issues Sweet, sugar based treat - A quick dose of sugar into the bloodstream has worked for some Boxers. While some sources will list Karo syrup as a possible source, we do NOT recommend this as it can act as a laxative - particularly for puppies. What can you give your Boxer? A spoonful of honey if you find that this does the trick, in the future you can gently rub it onto the gums for faster absorption into the bloodstream , peanut butter, plain vanilla ice cream or children's sugar coated cereal. Some owners of multiple dog households report that when their Boxer with idiopathic head tremors lies against another Boxer, the shaking calms down or entirely ceases. However, if you suspect that there is health reason for this behavior, please do not hesitate to bring your puppy or dog to a qualified, reputable veterinarian. While some issues can be resolved with minor adjustments to food or simple ear cleanings, other concerns such as infection need to be addressed with proper medication. Now is the time to go over the dog with your hands. Particular attention should now be paid to the head. The Boxer standard, even though explicit in the head qualities desired, is also confusing to many people. It is the head that gives judges and breeders alike, the most trouble. If shown a selection of photographs of different heads, most good judges and breeders would agree which ones were the best. So why is it that head type varies so much? This was the profile of the head that was said to be laid down by the country of origin of the breed, and most breeders still regard it to be of excellent type. You can run a ruler on the balance of muzzle to the whole of the head and it will come out .In plain terms this means that the muzzle if half the length of the skull. The depth of muzzle is correct and so is the depth of skull. Heavy wrinkles are not evident anywhere on the skull. Note the planes of the head, with the deep stop and tip tilted nose. NB: The standard calls for the tip of the nose to be higher than the root of the muzzle! Note also the rounding out of the upper lip and chin in front of the nose. The chin should NOT be hidden by lips and flews? Of course no teeth will be visible! Does the muzzle look neither too narrow or too shallow in relation to the skull? Can you feel bone and substance in the muzzle, not just heavy padding as you lift the flews to look into the mouth. The same also applies to a young puppy. Mouth When you open his mouth.The Boxer is undershot but does not have a reverse scissor bite. The underjaw should have a gap of about the width of a pencil between his top and bottom teeth. I look forward to the post on favorite dog toys! We just got a puppy and, while its only been a week, we are definitely having some issues getting puppy to embrace his crate. He is doing really well with potty training, and has yet to have an accident in his crate, but soon after he enters his crate the howling begins. This way he associates it with a positive place. Also, leave treats in there. Some dogs do better with their crates covered so like drape a blanket over the sides so it feels more like a cave. You might also try placing a t-shirt or something that smells like you in there. Also, leave the door open all the time and praise him if he goes in on his own. Good luck! OH, what a difference! Long after they no longer needed their crates, we kept them and always left the door opened. They would go into them when they were tired, knowing they were in a safe place; their place. Friends always said to us that they would have a dog if it behaved like our dogs. Be consistent. Fun for all of you. I can definitely see how teaching while a puppy can make a huge difference. We kept each of our puppies on a leash in the house, never out of our sight except when they were in the crate for 4 months before we gradually gave them independence. We always messed with them and held them. They had accidents as you would expect until fully house trained at about 4 months, but never any destructive or aggressive behavior. We gave them plenty of tough chew toys. Also training classes. They were never nervous or skittish. They love to lay on us and never have had any trouble with grooming, food guarding, loud noises, children or other animals. Day 2 no problem at all. Now just the occasional cry when I leave her but that is over with in a very short space of time. I also leave a low radio on for her. She uses the garden most of the time for toileting, but occasionally she will come into the house and do another wee. The problem I have at the moment is trying to stop her biting. I have tried the gentle command which she listens to some of the time. And I have tried standing and turning my back on her so she realises I am not playing when she bites, but she will then go for trousers or feet, which I try my best to ignore, or she will just go off and do something else like chew a mat or something which is a no no. A dog that never stood a chance but a dog whose life has been turned around because the rescue stepped in. His story could have ended in that shelter but it did not. Living with Grayson for the past 2 months has taught us more than I would have ever thought a dog could. Grayson was abused and he will pay the ultimate price yet he is not bitter at all, the opposite in fact. He loves people and wants to be loved on all day long. He has learned his new name within days and runs to us as fast as his body allows him to. Having him here has made us to cherish every single day because we are not promised tomorrow. He taught us to let go of our baggage and live in the now. Puppy within a couple of weeks started having loose stools to explosive diarrhea when we brought him home. After visit to vets and antibiotics vet recommended we switched to this food slowly with a bland diet. Doing fabulous on this food and he is growing appropriately. Kibbles are a great size. Using the food also as training treats. Chewy was awesome to work with to get his previous full bag of food donated to a no kill shelter. Only food we recommend to our buyers and also to others. They love this kibble so much, they are growing big and strong. As a dog family, we are very Impressed with Royal Canin as a brand; their older sister is on a Prescription Diet with Royal Canin as well so we have switched all of our food over to them. Cannot recommend them enough! I have always fed our Dogs Royal Canin and they did great. Had a German Shepherd that lived to almost 15 years old which I attribute to good food, exercise and love. Our puppy is thriving now. She eats every single feeding, no more diarrhea and she is growing well. My puppy loves it and prefers it over the Purina Pro Plan puppy lamb that his breeder started him on, I've been making the transition and he really likes it. Royal Canin always smells fresh and like real food when you open the bag! A good sign! I have a new puppy and she was having soft stools on the food the breeder was using. I switched her to this and fixed the problem. It took me forever to pick a food, but happy I picked this one. I use it for training treats also. How could I not give this puppy food 5 stars? Breeder started our puppy on this food and then gave us the other option of Purina Pro Plan. My thought was to gradually switch to the Purina based on the cost difference. I tried but even with mixing half and half, we had diarrhea all over in a puppy that was already housebroken. I donated the huge bag of Purina and switched back to Royal Canin and the problem was resolved. Lesson learned and the extra cost is totally worth it. Starch is also required for extrusion in dry foods. Excessive carbohydrate is an indicator of food quality as it can be used to reduce manufacturing cost. Foods that are high in carbohydrate can raise insulin and cause obesity. Some studies also show that dogs fed a high carbohydrate content have changes to their gut bacteria. Cellulose is an insoluble fiber made from wood pulp and is the least expensive and least functional form of fiber since it's very poorly fermented. It is included to firm stools. You will want to see beef, salmon or chicken, not animal, fish or poultry. Unnamed protein sources are of much lower quality, especially meals, which are typically from rendered waste. They are rich in omega-6 fatty acids, which can cause systemic and gut inflammation. Other oils like soybean are highly processed and may contain trans fats. Studies shows that ultra processed foods are linked to a higher rate of all-cause mortality in humans. Natural antioxidants like mixed tocopherols are preferred as artificial antioxidants have limited toxicity studies and may be linked to cancer.
