View fullsize Both our chocolate Labradoodle and our Poodle are beautiful dogs with excellent temperaments. They are our family pets. Because we begin with a Labradoodle and a Poodle, rather than a Lab and a Poodle, our puppies are much more likely to have the non-shedding Poodle coat. A F1b Labradoodle has been back-crossed to a poodle in an effort to insure a non-shedding coat. Even though most f1b Labradoodles shed very little or not all, it is impossible to guarantee that any dog even doodles or purebred poodles will not shed at all. Hypo- means less hypothermia is having a lower than normal body temperature. No dog can be said to be completely non-allergenic. Studies have shown that doodles are less likely to cause allergies, particularly f1b doodles. The ideal is to keep as much of the Lab head shape and super-friendly personality as possible while getting the non-shedding Poodle coat as well as the dignified, less vocal characteristics of the Poodle. Our Labradoodle methodology is quite simple. First, we get quality dogs. This is why we wanted to have pick of the litter for our Labradoodle and our Poodle and why we only obtained puppies from reputable breeders that we knew we could trust. Second, we try to treat our dogs Labradoodle and Poodle well. We feed our Labradoodle and Poodle high quality food with plenty of protein, and give them wonderful socialization and opportunities for exercise. We have 12 acres along the Enoree River with trails, additional property next to a Greenville state park, and property on Lake Hartwell giving us the opportunity to take the dogs kayaking. We recognize the importance of socializing young Labradoodle puppies so they will not be fearful as they mature. Our Labradoodle puppies have lots of opportunities to play with our children, and water games are definitely on top of the list. Labradoodles love the water and so do my kids, as you can see below. Third, we try to find appropriate families for our Chocolate Labradoodle puppies. To learn more about our process, check out this resource that gives a step-by-step guide between the application to receiving your puppy! A Chocolate Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle is not for everyone, and a puppy is not for everyone. If your family is not prepared for a Labradoodle puppy financially, time investment, etc. When can you get your puppy? Because we have only one Labradoodle mother and a couple guardian homes , puppies are available only occasionally. Contact us nathan crockettdoodles. We have a flexible waiting list and offer your deposit back if we do not have the ideal Labradoodle puppy for you within a certain window of time. Sometimes with mini Labradoodles we prefer to wait until they are a little older than 8 weeks because accidents tend to happen more easily with really small puppies. We will take several pictures of you with your Labradoodle puppy. We will send you the pictures for free place them on a USB thumb drive for you , and you will have full copyright privileges to all of the pictures to use at your discretion. You have the option of whether or not the photos appear here on the ChocolateLabradoodlePuppies. Although we never ship puppies, we will sometimes personally deliver puppies for a reasonable fee. Our goal is to do everything we can to assist in the house training and crate training process. A Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle puppy or any puppy cannot be completely reliable in the house until the puppy is about 6 months old. The simple point is that no matter what some breeders tell you you will be partially involved in the house training process unless you buy an older Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle , but we want to help you with that process. A one-year health guarantee; extended to three years for all who continue to feed TLC. We are concerned with finding really good homes for our Labradoodle and mini Labradoodle puppies. Labradoodle Color To see a list of available colors, check out this page. At ChocolateLabradoodlePuppies. Ultimately we cannot completely control the color of puppies. Even though chocolate is the most desirable color, we sometimes have puppies of other colors even occasional merles. These puppies, will of course, also make excellent pets. These non-chocolate Labradoodle puppies are also available to great families, but we know that Chocolate Labradoodles are the most desirable. The Labrador Retriever has a short coat that sheds. By breeding the F1 Labradoodle back to an unrelated Poodle, the chances of getting the highly desirable non-shedding Poodle coat increase exponentially. Some F1B Labradoodles are bred back another time to a Poodle in an effort to guarantee a Poodle coat. If high quality dogs are chosen to breed that have the head shape of a Labrador Retriever it is possible to get a puppy that is very similar in many ways to a Labrador, but has the beautiful non-shedding Poodle coat. Both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles are highly intelligent dogs, helping Labradoodles excel in smarts, train-ability, and a general desire to always please their owner. If you desire a family-friendly, kid loving, medium energy dog that is comfortable inside or outside, that loves the water and the land, you should definitely consider a Labradoodle or mini Labradoodle. For more info about Labradoodle puppies or mini Labradoodle puppies, please email nathan crockettdoodles. Check out our sister site miniLabradoodlePuppies. All breeds of Labrador Retrievers are known for being kind and gentle — and this trait runs especially strong with the chocolate-colored sweeties. While these dogs are very friendly to strangers, they have even more affection to give to their beloved families. Your Chocolate Lab puppy or adult will be happiest spending time with their favorite people. If you have young children, a lab is a great fit, as this breed is usually quite tolerant of the horseplay of small children who are still learning how to interact with pets. Just like many people, Chocolate Labs enjoy both downtime — especially if it involves being pampered by their family — and active high-energy fun. We recommend daily exercise, which can include anything from fetch, to tag, or even frisbee games. The average Chocolate Lab lifespan is between 9 and 11 years. The most common Chocolate Lab health problem is hip dysplasia, which occurs more commonly in older and overweight dogs. This is just one of the reasons to make exercise a common part of your time with a Chocolate Lab puppy or fully grown adult. Another problem that occurs in overweight labs is joint and movement issues. The other most common Chocolate Lab health problems are: Progressive Retinal Atrophy Cataracts Elbow Dysplasia As is the case with any dog, when you bring home a Chocolate Labrador, make sure that you have a good vet to handle routing vaccinations and check-ups as well as emergency health problems. Learn more about the Keystone Puppies Health Guarantee! Chocolate Lab Coat Care In general, Chocolate Lab coat care is easy compared to many other dog breeds which require weekly or daily work. Labrador Retrievers all have double coats, which includes an under layer of short hairs and a slightly longer top layer. This coat is useful for repelling water and keeping them cool in warmer temperatures — and warm in cooler ones. Their coat is also noted to be slightly dry and oily. Chocolate Lab coat care is fairly minimal and considered low maintenance. The coat should be brushed with a firm bristle brush 2 — 3 times per month to minimize shedding. In addition to that, baths are needed fairly infrequently. What is more crucial is ensuring that their toenails are well cared for throughout the year. Meet Chocolate Lab Puppies for Sale. Massage the base of the ear for 20—30 seconds— gently massage the base of the ear for about seconds. This will help the solution break up any dirt, wax or debris in the ear. This is normal and will help remove any loosened debris. Wipe away any excess debris or ear cleaning solution— use a cotton ball or pad to gently wipe away any excess debris or ear cleaning solution from the ear. Repeat for the other ear— repeat the process for the other ear, using a new cotton ball or pad and fresh cleaning solution. French Bulldog Ear Timeline weeks— French Bulldog puppies are born with their ears closed and flat against their heads. Bat Ears These are the typical Frenchie ears that we all know and love. The AKC says they have to be set up high on the head, but not too close together. The AKC states… Known as the bat ear, broad at the base, elongated, with round top, set high on the head but not too close together, and carried erect with the orifice to the front. The leather of the ear fine and soft. Other than bat ears is a disqualification. Positioning your dog in a corner and using your body to keep your dog still will help to make the process easier on both of you. Sit on the other side of your dog to help keep it still while you clean its ears. Ask a friend to help you by holding your dog steady! This will free up both of your hands to clean your dog's ears. Grasp the earflap near the top of the ear you will be cleaning first. Pull it upwards gently to help open up the ear canal. Hold the ear in this position with 1 hand while you clean the ear with your other hand. If your dog shows signs of pain when you do this, such as whining or yelping, then stop and take it to see a veterinarian. Your dog may have an ear infection. Keep squirting in ear cleaning solution until the ear canal is full. Otherwise, the solution may become contaminated with yeast and bacteria. This will move the solution around and help to break up and debris in the ear. Your dog will probably not like this part. Good job! Let go of your dog and let it shake out the solution for a few minutes. Keep in mind that this is how dogs normally clean out their ears in the wild. Your dog will shake for as long as it needs to get the solution out. Repeat the process for the other ear after you finish cleaning the first ear. He was about 9 months old before it started becoming an issue but since then we started a regular routine of French Bulldog ear cleaning. We have been using Zyomax for quite some time now and it works well. Cotton Balls or Cotton Swabs: Chances are you may have some of cotton balls and cotton swabs in you medicine cabinet already. Cotton swabs may also be used to clean the ridges of the outer ear for your French Bulldog. Warning: Just know that you should never insert them deep into the ear canal of your French bulldog. Safety Tweezers: Safety tweezers are handy to have on hand if your dog has a lot of hair in his ears. Paper Towels: Having some paper towels on hand can be helpful to contain potential messes, especially if your Frenchie is prone to shaking his head when something gets in his ears he will. I will typically place the gunked up cotton swab on this paper towel after cleaning his ears out. Dog Ear Wipes: Dog ear wipes can be helpful as they are disposable and easy to use. Step 2. Soak the end of a cotton swab in ear cleaning solution and then very gently scoop out any dirt or Frenchie ear wax near the entrance of his ear canal. You can make their ear health worse or even cause permanent ear damage. Step 3. Step 4. Step 5. Take a dry power towel and help your french bulldog dry their outer ear and the opening of their ear canal. One final step below in the ear cleaning process for your French Bulldog…. Step 6. We will go over all of the methods on how to clean English Bulldog ears and French Bulldog ears in just a second, but before we do, let's understand more about bulldogs in general, and dog ear cleaning as well. Dogs are kind, lovable, and gentle. They are some of the best companions anyone could ask for. While there are many breeds of dogs, bulldogs are one of the most favorites of pet parents. These cute, wrinkled, and grumpy fellows draw love and admiration for their sweet and caring demeanor. These animated personalities make them one of the most popular pet dogs. However, bulldogs are prone to various health issues, such as breathing problems, infections, and allergies. How to clean bulldog ears - Ear Infection in Bulldogs When bulldogs develop allergies, their ears take the defensive position and excrete allergens to fight the offenders. Dog ear yeast can eventually leads to a serious ear infection. Ear wax serves as a protection shield against infection. Cleaning the ear too much can strip away the ear wax, thereby damaging the healthy barrier Leaving the ear dirty allows the bacteria buildup in ear canals; this can also lead to infection. Rather, use special pet cleansers for Bulldogs ear cleaning. Since these pet cleansers dry quickly, they prevent wax or moisture buildup. How to Clean English Bulldog Ears While there are many adorable types of bulldogs, in this post, we will focus on English and French bulldogs. English bulldogs or the British bulldogs have a short build with trademark wrinkled skin. They have folded rose-shaped ears. Healthy dogs have a pinkish-gray odorless ear. In both cases, moisture can easily accumulate in the ear leading to infection. How to clean bulldog ears step by step Step 1: Comfort Your Dog Your champ may not like the activity and put up a fight when cleaning the ear. Step 2: Position the dog for a cleaning session Hold the dog from the collar with one hand; use the other hand to lift the ear flap gently. Pull the flap upwards in a manner that exposes and straightens the ear canal. Step 3: Pour the Cleanser Solution and Massage In the next step, squeeze a few drops of pet ear cleanser solution into the ear canal of your bulldog. It helps to break up the debris inside the ear canal. Shaking the head helps to get rid of the excess solution. Vets recommend using a dry cotton ball or dry paper towel to wipe around the inner ear. Make sure to fully dry the ear as wetness may lead to fungus, bacteria, and ear infection. However, French bulldogs have large pointed bat-like ears. Due to the pointy ears, these dogs tend to collect more debris than other breeds. For this reason, French bulldog ear infections become a common issue and more attention is needed when it comes to hygiene, particularly ear cleaning. To wipe out the outer areas of your French bulldog, follow these simple steps. Sit on the floor with your French bulldog on your lap. Hold its collar with one hand and clean its ears with the other hand. You may ask someone to assist you in the ear-cleaning session. Use a clean towel paper to clean the visible outer parts of the ear. Wet the paper with an ear cleansing solution before using it for wiping. You may also use a cotton ball for wiping the ear. It can rupture the eardrum. Dry the ears completely with a clean towel paper. The easiest way to protect your dogs from an ear infection is to keep them clean. It is important to know that dogs with floppy ears, such as bulldogs, are more likely to have dog ear yeast problems and catch infections. The hair obstructs the flow of air in the ear canal. Quick links. Algae Mites Additionally, since French Bulldogs tend to have weak immune systems, they can be extra susceptible to things like yeast infections. Yeast grows in dark, moist places, so the Frenchie ears are just asking for trouble. It can also smell moldy, musty, cheesy or yeasty. Another possibility is that their ears are just dirty. Common culprits are dirt, hair, pollen, earwax, and dead skin cells. It can result in a noticeable smell when the gunk starts to congeal. A bit of earwax is actually normal and healthy for dogs, but if you let it accumulate, it can cause pain, discomfort, odors and more. One of the tell-tale signs is if your Frenchie is shaking his or her head a lot. Yeast infections can cause brown or reddish-brown discharge. So can fungal infections and conditions like otitis externa. Ear mites. Are French Bulldogs prone to ear infections? Part of the reason is their anatomy. They have flat, compressed skulls with big ears that stand upright, so their ear canals are quite deep. Have you noticed that your Frenchie is especially vulnerable to ear problems after a bath or a swim? Another reason is their genetic predisposition to allergies. French Bulldog allergies can result in itchy skin and ears. If your Frenchie scratches their ears over and over again, they can bleed and cause infections. Over time, you might even compact it. This will cause even more problems for your poor pup. Remember the golden rule. Moisture is one of the most common causes of ear infections since it encourages the production of bacteria and fungus. Give your Frenchie a reason to smile their big, slobbery smile!

You can expect them to sometimes have more energy than traditional Goldens and have a strong sense of duty. And with a name like that, it comes as no surprise that these dogs are so sought after by hunters and those with outdoor hobbies! The original Goldens came to be as a result of cross-breeding between various different breeds including: Water Spaniels, Yellow Retrievers, Irish Settlers, and Bloodhounds over several generations. In the case of Field-Bred Goldens, they continued to be bred with hunting in mind and they became well-known as strong hunting-companions. Still to this day they retain their reputation and continue to be sought out for that same purpose. They are smart, fun-loving, and eager to please. These pups are known for being loyal, intelligent, and can be trained easily. However, keep in mind that they have a reputation for being mouthy from their instinct to hunt. That paired with their higher energy levels, may require extra supervision and exercise. Oftentimes, cheaper golden retriever puppies can ultimately cost you a LOT more money in the long run because they are more likely to have health issues. Are Field-Bred Goldens more expensive? Depending on their athletic ability, Field-Bred Goldens can be more expensive if the breeding stock has won titles in certain events. After all, Hunting ability is the prime focus for Field-Breds! What is the difference between Field-Bred and Golden Retriever? A Field-Bred is a type of Golden Retriever. They tend to have higher energy levels and be more involved in athletic hobbies or events. Their coats are typically shorter and darker. They also are known to be more mouthy and most likely require a lot of activity or a canine job to perform. How big is a full grown Field-Bred Golden Retriever? The weight range for these sweet pups can be from pounds for full-grown males, and pounds for full-grown females. Additionally, these babies tend to stand at about inches tall, with males being on the taller end of the spectrum. Do Field-Bred Goldens shed? Yes, all types and variations of Golden Retrievers shed, and this is entirely normal for the breed. Their coats are also typically straighter and known to be water-resistant, which makes them great swimming partners! Are Field-Bred Golden Retrievers aggressive? The good news is— no, Field-Bred Golden Retrievers are not aggressive dogs by nature. However, keep in mind that they are more mouthy from their hunting nature. They may be more inclined to play rough with you. Although, with plenty of exercise, they can still relax and cuddle up with you. If you are new to breeding, please take a look at the GRCA website for a wealth of information. Our philosophy is to keep an open mind.Genetic testing and overall health is important while balancing genetic diversity within the golden retriever breed as more DNA tests to attain the 'perfect dog' are continually added. Knowledge is power, however we can grow along with diversity to work toward balanced results with health, temperament and trainability. All of our breeding golden retrievers - male and female - have hips, elbows, eyes and cardiac Orthopedic Foundation for Animals health testing. We also perform genetic testing for a number of inheritable conditions - these range from preventing blindness to seizures and others such as skin conditions. Because the golden retriever breed in general is prone to renal dysplasia , sometimes affecting them as young as puppyhood, we have began genetic testing to help reduce kidney disease through a Canadian lab. We are not a licensed kennel as we have five or fewer litters annually, and because we test and campaign our dogs we consider ourselves serious hobby breeders. All of our dogs and puppies reside in-home with our family, although we usually send one dog at a time with our pro for hunt test or field trial training.

As Goldendoodles are crossbreeds between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, their generational name will always include an "F. In the designation F1B, "B" indicates "Backcross", which means that a first generation offspring is bred back with one of the original breeds. As such, the F1B Goldendoodle inherits 25 percent of its genes from the Golden Retriever and 75 percent from its purebred Poodle. Both F1 and F1B Goldendoodle dogs make great family pets, but they do have some minor differences. For example, F1B Goldendoodles tend to be more non-shedding compared to F1 Goldendoodles thanks to the higher percentage of Poodle genetics. Whichever generation you choose, our Goldendoodle dogs are sure to capture your heart with their curly coat and gorgeous eyes. We ensure our beautiful dogs receive comprehensive veterinary care and are bred in a high-quality environment. This ensures you take home a healthy, well-socialized, and friendly Goldendoodle. Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. They need to be exercised at least an hour every day to keep them stimulated and healthy. If you are a busy person, the Whippet Lab mix might not be the right dog for you. Growth is difficult to monitor: Since this hybrid is fairly new, there are no available growth guides or charts that can help you monitor the development of your Whippet. Hence, it is only logical that the Whipador has inherited the hunting instincts of its parents. This hybrid will likely chase after small animals. If you think that the pros outweigh the cons and you are confident of your capabilities in maintaining a Whippet Labrador mix, then nothing should stop you from getting one. Just know that owning a Whippet Labrador mix or any dog breed for that matter is a lifetime commitment. Whipadors, just like their parent breeds, are intelligent hybrid dogs. They are easy to train and very eager to follow orders from their owners. How Fast Can Whipadors Run? A Whipador can run for approximately 35 miles per hour at its top speed. This is faster than most medium-sized dogs! This is expected since one of its parent breeds, the Whippet dog, was originally bred for racing competitions. In addition, it is one of the fastest dog breeds in the world. Whippet Labrador mixes are moderate shedders. However, you should expect it to shed heavily twice a year, especially during the spring and winter seasons. Nonetheless, weekly brushing and regular bathing can help manage the shedding of your Whippet Lab mix. Are Whippet Labrador Mixes Hypoallergenic? They are naturally very friendly and very reliable. They love playing with their owners and will excitedly welcome new guests, instead of being hostile towards them. Also, they also love snuggling with their owners after a day of being active. As mentioned earlier, Whippet Labs are from two hunting breeds. If there are any pests or small animals trying to invade your home, they will make sure to track them down and chase them away for you. They are worthy investments since owners will gain both a trusty companion and a loyal friend. This is why a lot of people are looking to have Whippet Labs. However, like other dog breeds, Whippet Labs are also susceptible to some congenital diseases. Before you finally purchase a puppy, make sure that you also understand the risks that your new pet will face, and what you need to do to take care of it. Taking prior precautions will ensure that your pet will live out its maximum lifespan. While they offer the convenience of making sure that you will be able to have a pet at once, they may not be able to check up on each dog if it is still healthy enough to live out a long life. Missing out on small issues could lead to future problems for your pet. That way, you can ensure that the parents of the puppy grew up in areas that are conducive for living. You can find out if it inherited a disease from its parents and if that particular disease has been treated or not. It helps to have more information about your new pet before you take it home and take care of it yourself. Aside from these sites, you may also visit local rescue centers if they have any Whippet Labs that are up for adoption. The mix of the two makes the Whippet Lab a moderate shedder. They tend to run around a lot, so expect fluffs of fur all over your house if they are free to roam around. As with most dogs, Whippet Labs should be given baths when needed. Usual hygienic practices, such as trimming their nails and brushing their teeth, also apply to Whippet Labs. You may comb their fur as well, but again, watch for the shedding. Having a long nose also comes with the risk of having nose tumors and other nose-related issues. The color of their skin also puts them at risk for skin damage and sunburns. Mitral Valve Degeneration: While this condition is a common risk for dogs in general, Whippets have been observed to have an increased risk for cardiovascular diseases. Autoimmune Thyroiditis: Some studies have shown that Whippets have a low level of thyroid hormones. This puts them at risk for hypothyroidism, something that the Whippet Lab could inherit from the parent. Additional medical precautions need to be taken to avoid this. Overfeeding is not encouraged since Labradors tend to become obese. Whippet Labs are active and energetic, which means that they need food that will sustain them efficiently. Make sure to look into food that can supply the energy they need to run around and play a lot more. These best dry dog food options ought to do the trick, while the worst dry dog food is what you should undoubtedly avoid. Just make sure not to overfeed your pooch, as this could lead to hip and elbow dysplasia, something that the Whippet Lab is highly susceptible to. It would help to have a diet rich in fish oil, chondroitin, and glucosamine, all of which can be found in the Nutra Thrive dog food supplement. Life stage nutrition is a thing nowadays, so make sure to select accordingly — the best puppy food brands for cubs and the best senior dry dog food for doggo-grandpas! This makes it easy for the dogs to digest and regulates how much stool it produces, while still giving energy. Alpo Prime Cuts: This particular kind of dog food is packed with protein and 23 vitamins and minerals, perfect for an active breed like the Whippet Lab. Aside from ensuring muscle growth, it also gives your dog additional protection from possible diseases that it could develop. Vitality High Energy Dog Food: This was made for working dogs and show-dogs so that they would be supplied with sufficient energy. It has Beef and Lamb flavors that dogs love, and it also contains Omega oil for healthy skin and shiny coat. Aside from the ones mentioned above, you may also resort to raw food for your Whippet Lab. Feeding them raw meat and vegetables will give them a decent amount of energy and nutrients for their growth as well. Whippet Combined with Lab Exercise Requirements Lab-Whippet mix To ensure that the Whippet Lab will stay happy, exercise should be done, and the dog should be allowed to run around. Otherwise, it will become depressed and may ruin household objects. As such, the Lab Whippet should be allowed to stretch out at your home or in dog parks. Daily walks are also advised. You may also play games with your dog to further exercise it. Playing catch or fetch is advisable, given its hunting lineage. It also functions as a squeaker toy for your dog to play around with. You can use this to give your dog some exercise while teaching it to fetch. It launches a ball that the dog will fetch, then re-launches the ball once the dog returns it to the machine. It will keep the dog occupied while you can focus on other things. It keeps the dog from looking at other household things as chew toys. Labrador Combined with Whippet Training Whippet-Lab mix To further understand how the Whippet Lab can be trained, you have to know how its parents think. It has to recognize who is in charge so that it will obey commands effectively. Having a stronger relationship with the Whippet makes training it so much easier. Labradors, on the other hand, are natural service dogs and are motivated by positive reinforcement. They respond well when rewarded, especially with food. They are also people-pleasers, which means that they will work hard to perfect a particular skill to satisfy their owners. Naturally, the Whippet Lab will inherit these qualities from its parents, giving you a dog that is highly motivated by strong bonds and positive reinforcement. Both breeds are quite intelligent as well, so you can teach the dog various tricks. You may follow these tips to make training easier: Be firm with commands. You have to establish that you are the alpha and that the dog must obey your commands. When you issue an order, make sure the dog follows you. You should also be clear and consistent with rules to avoid confusion. Provide varying levels of positive reinforcement. After a dog learns to do the trick repeatedly, you have to start withholding rewards. This will teach the dog to work harder for the next treat. Repeat this until the dog successfully improves specific skills. Make your bonds strong. To appeal to its Whippet side, you have to make sure that you have enough time with your dog. Exercise with it and give it cuddles to enhance your relationship. Try to please it as much as it will try to please you. Give it enough exercise. The more activity a Whippet Lab gets, the easier it becomes to train. Make sure to walk the dog often and give it enough space in your home to roam around. Take your dog to parks and allow it to socialize with other people and other dogs. Labradors are naturally social dogs, so bonding with it will come quickly. All members of your family will have fun bonding with the dog and playing with it. If you have hyperactive kids, you can make them run with the dog so that they will both bond and have exercise at the same time. When you or someone in your family are out for a morning jog, take the dog with you. It is the result of the union of two great hunting breeds: the loyal Whippet and the reliable Labrador. As long as you know how to take care of the dog, it will give everything it can to take care of you as well. Just make sure to remember everything that you read here. Keep the dog happy by making sure it gets its exercise daily. Let it expend its naturally high energy by letting it run around and play. If it gets tired, let it rest, and take that opportunity to cuddle with it. Feed the dog specific food that will give it back its energy and strengthen its muscles and bones. Take care of its health as well by knowing how to avoid health risks. When training the dog, make sure to have a strong bond with it and reward its good behavior. Work hard to please the dog, and it will begin to please you as well. Make your family members bond with the dog so that its socializing tendencies are fulfilled as well. Teach it useful skills so that you can utilize its service dog qualities. References: Davison, L. Walton, Joel, and Eve Adamson. Labrador Retrievers for Dummies. Wiley Publishing, .Bengtson, Bo. The Whippet. Kennel Club Books, .Whippet x Labrador Health Mixed breeds, such as Whipadors, may inherit some or all of the health problems that afflict or are carried by their parents. Fortunately, both Labs and Whippets are relatively healthy dogs. But as with many purebreds, their genetics and physical attributes predispose them to certain health problems. To learn more about the diseases and health conditions that Labrador retrievers are predisposed to, check out the health section on our website. To learn more about the diseases and health conditions that Whippets are predisposed to, keep reading! In addition to the aforementioned health conditions, the following genetic ailments have also been observed in Whippets: Nasal health issues Whippets are dolichocephalic, or simply put, they have longer noses than some of their shorter-muzzled brethren. Having a longer muzzle definitely has its perks, but it sometimes can put a dog at risk of developing nasal tumors, sinus problems, and other conditions. Congenital deafness According to a study, Whippets with the piebald or extreme-white piebald gene are most likely to be born bilaterally one-sided or unilaterally completely deaf. The piebald gene is found in predominantly white dogs. Color Dilution Alopecia Another color-related genetic condition, color dilution alopecia unusual hair thinning or loss has been reported in Whippets that have a diluted hair coat color. Especially blue or fawn. Hemangiosarcoma One final color-related health condition that is common in Whippets is hemangiosarcoma, or skin cancer. Whippets have naturally thin fur and light-colored skin, and so like fair-skinned and fair-haired humans, they are more susceptible to sunburn and subsequent skin damage. One way to prevent a susceptible dog from developing skin cancer is to carefully monitor their exposure to extreme sun if you live in a very sunny climate. Dogs with the MDR1 mutation should not be given certain antibiotics, anti-cancer drugs, anti-diarrheal drugs, dewormers, pain medications or tranquilizers. Doing so could result in an adverse reaction due to toxin build up, including but not limited to seizures, blindness, loss of muscle control or death. According to a study, sighthounds like Whippets have most commonly been observed to have low total thyroid hormone levels. A dog with hypothyroidism will need to be given a pill to replace the hormone that is not being secreted. This will protect them from such symptoms as dry skin, hair loss, skin disease, weight gain and behavioral issues. When one copy of the mutation is present, the affected dog may just appear to be very muscular and highly athletic. But when two copies of the mutation are present, the dog will appear entirely too muscular. While over-muscling is not necessarily detrimental to afflicted dogs, as the condition may cause some muscle cramping, it is mostly just unsightly. Mitral valve degeneration MTD This heart condition, which often leads to left-sided heart failure, is the most common form of cardiovascular disease in dogs. It typically does not present until a dog reaches older age. But in Whippets, some studies are showing an increasing number of much younger Whippets presenting with signs of cardiovascular disease. This suggests that MTD could be hereditary in certain breeds of dogs. Anesthesia complications Sighthounds like Whippets are usually lean-built dogs without a lot of body fat and devoid of a super thick coat. This makes them especially susceptible to cold temperatures. Where this relates to anesthesia is as follows: Surgery takes place in a cold and sterilized environment. Whippets placed under anesthesia are thus at risk of developing hypothermia if their body temperature is not monitored closely and adjusted as needed during a procedure. Whippets also have an issue with their liver filtering certain drugs that are used during anesthesia. Therefore, certain agents cannot be used for anesthesia in Whippets and Whippet mixes. Or they may become a royal terror to your house, not to mention become very unhappy. Your dog will also love the opportunity to be let off its leash to stretch its legs. Buying Labrador Whippet Mix Puppies Before you purchase a puppy from a breeder, we recommend that you do plenty of research to ensure that you only buy from the best of the best, so to speak. Not all dog breeders are equal. Responsible breeders use genetic testing to prevent the passage of undesired traits or health conditions. While irresponsible breeders breed using stock with known health problems or genetic predispositions. Responsible breeders also keep all of their dogs healthy and in clean living conditions. Unfortunately, there are lots of breeders who run puppy mills solely to produce lots of puppies, with no concern for the health of the breeding stock. Adult dogs, purebred and mutt, working dog or pet, end up in shelters or animals rescues. Some are surrendered by owners who cannot care for them anymore. Others are taken from bad situations. And some are picked up as strays. You might find yourself a perfectly nice Whipador for adoption at an animal shelter or rescue. We suggest beginning your search from a Labrador or Whippet-specific rescue association. Similar Breeds. We adopted a 12 yr old cat American Gray short hair - Rebecca from a friend who was forced to leave the country about 4 years ago. Having a cat was a very different experience, she went from a very distant aloof type of cat to a lap cat in about one years time. She actually sleeps on me every single night. We love Rebecca very much but I am a dog guy so it was time for my next fur baby. I really wanted a family type medium sized dog, she had to be a rescue and of course she had to get along with Rebecca. We looked for a long time months and then we went to what felt like our 60th adoption fair for a scheduled meeting. While greeting another dog, this lanky blonde pup caught my eye. Her foster parents called her Blondie, she was in the back corner of a pen with 3 other lab mix puppy's but she was so not interested in all the commotion, she looked like a Lazy Daisy so we called her Dazey. This quirky 4 month old baby stole my heart in a moment. I knew instantly that she was the one! The rescue did not know for sure what breed she was except that she looked like a Lab mix. She was blonde, had long legs and a very lean racing type build. One ear stood straight up and the other ear flopped over, she had a crooked curved tail we thought it had been broken previously but now we know the curved tail was the Whippet and pretty thick claws for a 4 month old. She was very nervous but seemed to know that she had been adopted because she clung to us as if we were old pals during the adoption process. Dazey fell asleep in my partner's lap on the way home from the adoption fair. She was covered in fleas so we had to give her a flea bath before going in the house. It was obvious that she was not fond of the water still isn't but she was very well behaved during the bath. Once dry, we went in the house and she quickly investigated her new home, she completely disregarded the cat and the cat was not impressed by her either. I went to get her bed set up and when I returned to the bedroom with the bed, she was fast asleep in my bed, on her back with all 4 legs in the air. Once awake Dazey claimed her bed quickly, she seemed to prefer having her own space and she was a long girl. Dazey is oddly very skittish around new people and she really is not a fan of children. She is also very protective of her new family. I can honestly say that I have never had a more loyal, pleasant and easily trained dog before which if you knew my previous pets, you would agree that's saying something. Dazey is great with other dogs as long as she is off her leash like at doggie daycare, she has no problem with how big other dogs are but she prefers to play in the small dog room. We really had no idea what her mix was, so many people offered suggestions including our vet. We knew that she must have a hunting breed mix because her nose rarely leaves the ground and she can see small birds, rabbits and the like from a long distance. We took her to the park her most favorite word now - next to Frisbee to see if that type of play interested her and we were blown away by her instant ability to track, chase down and catch a Frisbee mid air. I mean she literally knows exactly where its coming down regardless of the winds, she almost never misses. One day an elderly lady came up to us in the park all excited, she said that it had been a long time since she had seen a Whipador! We were like a.She even opened up her phone and pulled a few pictures of Whipadors' up and to our surprise, there was Dazey well at least a look alike. The DNA test confirmed that she was correct! Dazey has a shiny golden blonde coat, chestnut brown eyes and has all the characteristics of the Whippet but look's like a mix between the breeds and she sheds like a lab. She is the sweetest, funniest little girl with two speeds, full throttle and sleep, lol. Dazey also loves to howl along with us once we get her going, she has a deep hound dog chest howl and a very big bark. OH, I am sure you are wondering about how Rebecca and Dazey get along. At first Rebecca was annoyed with her, Dazey has no sense of personal space as she frequently will sniff Rebecca from behind, often lifting Rebbeca's back legs off the ground. Rebecca responds with a hiss and a soft swat but no malice intended. We do have to watch Dazey because sometimes her instinct to chase gets the best of her and the two go flying through the house but Rebecca many times will instigate the play time. They also frequently share a bed or a pillow, depending on who got there first. Sorry this was so long but I just found this page and I wanted to share! Thanks for reading!

The Cocker Spaniel may also experience hip and elbow dysplasia like the Golden Retriever. This breed has a life expectancy of 12 — 15 years. Keep in mind that the following information is based on its parent breeds. These are all predictions that vary from case to case depending on genetic makeup. In terms of physical appearance, the Cocker Spaniel comes in a variety of coat colors, so the forever puppy may not always be golden. It could be a mix of blue, black, brown, and white. The ideal attributes a Golden Cocker Retriever should have is a medium-length coat, floppy ears, and a smaller build than the Golden Retriever. We can predict the height of the Golden Retriever Cocker Spaniel mix will range from 20 to 24 inches 51 — 61 cm. As we mentioned above its weight will range from 30 to 45 pounds 13 — 20 kg. The health concerns of a Golden Cocker Retriever are also based on its parents. Both the Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel are capable of experiencing seizures associated with epilepsy and hip and elbow dysplasia. On the Cocker Spaniel side, however, you have more serious illnesses to worry about like glaucoma and cancerous tumors. On the bright side, both parent breeds have a good life expectancy, so your Golden Cocker Retriever will live a long and happy life of at least 10 years! Want to see how this mix grows up? For owners who really want a teacup-sized Golden Cocker Retriever, there are some toy ones on the market. And then you mix it once again with Cocker Spaniel to get an even smaller dog. A dog with dwarfism may look cute and small but it causes them a lot of pain throughout their entire lives. The height of a standard Goldendoodle reaches 20 inches 50 cm. The weight ranges from 50 — 90 pounds 22 — 40 kg. Additionally, the coat of a Goldendoodle will be much curlier than the Golden Cocker Retriever thanks to its Poodle parent breed. Before buying one, consider if a Golden Cocker Retriever is your best match in the long run. How will this dog fit into your daily schedule and hobbies? Does This Mix Shed? Both parent breeds have long-haired coats that invite moderate to heavy shedding throughout the year. Do I Need A Backyard? Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES. Purebred Golden Retrievers sometimes need two sessions. A fenced backyard or a playpen is also essential to keep your Golden Cocker Retriever from wandering off. Both parent breeds have a long history of being hunting dogs with a strong prey-drive. If your Golden Cocker Retriever sees or smells a small animal in the distance, it will run as quickly as it can to track it down. Dogs are just fine. For example, any sign of stubbornness or independence can lead to harder training. Start training as early as possible as puppies are easier to handle than adults. The temperament of a Golden Cocker Retriever should be: Happy. One of the distinct characteristics of the hunting Golden Retriever is having a darker and shorter coat. The average size of full-grown Goldens has a height of 21 to 24 inches 53 to 61 cm and a weight of 55 to 65 pounds 25 to 29 kg. Golden Retrievers are not only friendly but also intelligent. The doll-eyed Cocker Spaniel Cockers are often seen in dog shows with their luscious hair and big doggy eyes giving everyone a taste of their sweet expression. With a height of only .Aside from being mischievous and using their dreamy eyes to get away with anything, Cocker Spaniels are active, alert, and intelligent. Just like Golden Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels have two distinct lines: the show line and the field line. The first Comfort Retriever the original name of this mix originated in .And not one puppy is the same as its littermates. Ideally, the aim attributes of the Cocker Spaniel-Golden Retriever cross is a medium-length coat, floppy ears, and a smaller build than Goldies. They have deep-set eyes that are slightly almond-shaped that can either be shades of brown, green, blue, or particolored. Their ears are quite longer than Goldens, and they touch the cheeks. Some of them can have tufts of hair between their toes. Unpredictability is a package deal when you get a crossbreed as a canine friend. So, if you prefer knowing what your pup will exactly turn out, this may not be the breed for you. While this is true for some of them, not every dog will grow or stay the same. Source: honey. For weight, it can be as low as 25 pounds 11 kg or as heavy as 70 pounds 32 kg. Most of them will fall in the middle of those numbers, which is around 30 to 45 pounds 14 to 20 kg. They may be little, but the exercise requirement of the Golden Cocker makes them suitable for homes with a big yard or somewhere in the country. They can be okay with apartments, too. How about a toy or mini version of the Golden Cocker Retriever? We mentioned the miniature Golden Retriever, right? Another way to produce a smaller Golden Retriever-Cocker Spaniel crossbreed is unnatural and unacceptable. Did you know that some fidos that look so small and really cute are lab-made? They suffer from a skeletal defect called dwarfism. Coat and colors of the Cocker Spaniel-Golden Retriever cross Your four-legged friend can have a very long fur like the Cocker, or quite short like the Goldie. They have a water-resistant hair, with the undercoat helping them keep warm. This one parent is seen in black, white, tan and white, black and tan, red, blue, chocolate, parti-color, roan, and merle. This designer dog is not hypoallergenic. Cocker Retriever Spaniels are moderate to heavy shedders throughout the year. So, with all that variation, the appeal with this crossbreed is a unique mystery pup. And you got it right! These are traits that will make them a great family pet, even those with children! Not only that, but they also interact well with other fellow dogs and can serve as an excellent watchdog. And just like its folks, this fido is not known for being aggressive. Other than that, socialization and training is the answer. During training, always keep in mind that this pooch is sensitive, so be assertive without doing anything negative as your dog will get hurt easily. Just be prepared for an energetic pup and train her as early as possible. The one thing that would probably need your time is grooming, as this fido is high maintenance when it comes to their hair. Get ready for grooming With long, luscious coats, you might have been ready for this. They have ears, chest hair, and trousers that can easily become tangled and matted. Do they have special dietary needs? Dry kibbles, wet food, and raw diet — each type of dog food have their own advantage and disadvantages. The factors that you have to consider when figuring out how much to feed your dog is her age, size, activity level, and on some occasion, health. What most owners do is look at the back of the dog food bag for the serving suggestion. There is a better way than feeding your canine friend based on the number of cups. Some may say that the Golden Retriever-Cocker Spaniel cross need about 2 cups of kibbles. That is not enough, though. Make sure you set aside 45 to 60 minutes of your day to take your Cocker Retriever out for a walk, a jog, or a hike. There are times that they would need two sessions of exercise to avoid pent up energy. Once the sun is out, treat your doggo for undertaking activities such as trekking that will make her satisfied. Not just because of the change of scenery and new scents, but also you took the time to bond with her. As they say, a tired dog is a happy dog. You also have to consider the generations of inbreeding that makes crossbreeds vulnerable to a few illnesses. Both parent breeds can suffer from seizures that are associated with hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as epilepsy. Golden Retrievers are also susceptible to hypothyroidism and mast cell tumors. Cocker Spaniels have more health concerns like glaucoma, cataracts, seborrhea skin disease , liver disease, and congestive heart failure. These are for precautions as your Dakota Sport Retriever may or may not inherit these conditions. Not the females, though! You should also only purchase puppies from breeders who always prioritize the health welfare of their breeding stock and their litters. This can be challenging, but with proper documentation and medical records of the dogs, plus a good pedigree line, you can take those as good signs. For life expectancy, both the Golden Retriever and Cocker Spaniel live good and long lives. So, we can expect the same thing for their mixed-breed descendant with a general lifespan of at least ten years. He or she should also allow you to visit the dogs and their home, as well as encourage you to observe and get to know the parents and their puppies. Responsible breeders also have a history of vet visits, genetic tests, and health guarantee. Dakota Sport Retrievers for adoption or rescue Choosing to adopt a dog is a noble act. You might be interested in giving an older fur angel, and other Golden Retriever or Cocker Spaniel mix another chance to be loved and have a new home. Comparing their size, the Cogol can be a little taller, as Goldendoodles have a maximum height of 20 inches 50 cm and can weigh 50 to 90 pounds 22 to 40 kg. If there are more Cocker genes in the Cogol mix, then they can be smaller than a Goldendoodle. This Poodle mix has a curlier coat and has a better chance of being hypoallergenic. It makes the Goldie-Poodle cross a better option for those who have allergies or would prefer minimal fur around their house. If you have no problem with dander and enjoy being on the move, the Cogol is an excellent family dog that is trainable, loving, happy, and polite. These breeders are puppy mills and just care about profit. My Experience I found my gorgeous new puppy through a Facebook post, and many genuine breeders use social media as an effective advertising medium. So, I decided to investigate further. I arranged to go and view the puppies and was impressed with the setup. The pups were roaming around a large pen with their mother. The pen was clean, and there were plenty of toys for the babies to play with. The breeder asked me to send regular updates on how my new furry friend was doing and emphasized that I could contact him at any time for advice and to voice any concerns I had. All in all, my experience was great and left me feeling confident that I had made the right decision. Puppy Cost The breeders on this list fall into reasonable price ranges. Adoption Length If they offer same-day adoption that takes less than an hour, you may want to reconsider. A super-fast adoption process implies a lack of vetting on their part. So, where can you find reputable Goldendoodle breeders in Virginia and what are the key things to look for? Some offer Standard Goldendoodles while others specialize in smaller, Mini Goldendoodle pups. Unfortunately, Doodle scammers and puppy mills also want their piece of the pie while resorting to unethical breeding practices and borderline torturing the animals. So, how can you avoid supporting a puppy mill and what should you look for in a responsible Goldendoodle breeder in Virginia? Why is that important? Because extensive health testing helps breeders screen the parent dogs for any hereditary diseases, which can be carried onto the puppies. Not only will it cost you a ton of money in the long run, unhealthy puppies with genetic conditions often struggle with pain and severe discomfort throughout their lives. In addition to rigorous health testing, you want to double-check if a breeder provides a health warranty for their puppies. Most commonly, breeders offer a two-year health guarantee for genetic conditions. Keep in mind that even scammers and puppy mills often claim to hold certifications with the organizations we mentioned above. Please be aware of this and always check back with the organizations, as their member breeders are often publicly posted on their websites. Many Goldendoodle breeders in Virginia have customer testimonials posted on their website, but we urge you to do some more digging on online communities like Reddit, Yelp, Facebook , or here at Doodle Doods. Ask around amongst your friends, family members, or neighbors who have adopted a puppy from a certain breeder. They specialize in breeding Multigenerational Goldendoodles of all sizes for loving forever homes. Grooming Services: For your GSD to have a well-maintained coat and appearance, you should take them to a professional grooming salon. They will be cleaned, trimmed, and pampered as they deserve. For the most part, providing your dog with a lot of exercise and high-quality food will prevent the dog from developing unforeseen health issues. You will need to buy a dog-safe toothpaste, dog-safe shampoo, and certain medications, such as heartworm prevention, to keep your dog healthy its entire life. Not only do you have to feed your German Shepherd a lot of food, but you want to feed your dog food that is high quality and healthy. As long as your dog does not have any known illnesses or issues, you should not have to pay monthly prices. At the minimum, you should take your German Shepherd for an annual visit, assuming it is healthy. You also need to pay for flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. Most of these medications last for 1 to 3 months at a time. It is completely up to you whether or not you decide to get pet insurance. If you are interested in getting health insurance for your new pet, Lemonade offers customizable insurance plans and responsive customer service. If you do not want to pay for pet insurance, you can simply set up a savings account instead. So long as you have a house and a yard for your dog to play, the home environment is generally suitable for dogs. Some environmental maintenance things you will need to buy include doggie bags. You need these if you take your dog for a walk or if you have a yard that you have to maintain. You may also need to pay for carpet cleaner, deodorizer, and other items to keep the house clean, despite your heavy shedding German Shepherd. This means that your German Shepherd can help you out when you are in a pinch, but it also means that you need to provide your German Shepherd ample entertainment, or else your dog could become destructive. At the very minimum, you need to buy heavy-duty toys for your German Shepherd. German Shepherds can be really rough with their toys. So, we recommend some sort of brand specific for rough-playing dogs, such as Kong. These boxes will offer toys, treats, and more for your dog, but these boxes can be pretty expensive too. Additional Costs to Factor In In addition to initial costs and monthly payments, there are some other additional factors you need to think about. For starters, obedience training is really important for dogs of this size. Obedience training can be a bit expensive at first, but it will be worth it in the long run. You need to pay for a pet sitter or kennel whenever you go on vacations and your dog does not come with you. If you are buying a German Shepherd puppy, you may also have to pay to replace or fix items the puppy damages. Think about accidents or unforeseen illnesses too. These can cost a whole lot in vet visits. Owning a German Shepherd on a Budget If you want a German Shepherd but are worried about destroying your budget, there are ways that you can own one of these wonderful dogs without spending a fortune either. Unfortunately, there is little you can change about the price of these dogs up front, but you can save on the monthly expenses. The most important tip for taking care of a German Shepherd on a budget is to know when to splurge. When it comes to dog food, make sure to select high-quality food. This will be more expensive upfront, but it will ensure that your dog is healthy for as long as possible, resulting in fewer bills. Splurging on heavy-duty toys is another great idea. These toys will cost more at first, but they should last much longer than cheap ones. For instance, there are a lot of coupons and promo codes you can use when purchasing toys, food, and other items for your German Shepherd. Even if you find coupons, only spend money on the essentials. Not to mention, buy crates and beds that are suitable for the dog as it grows. Many people make the mistake of buying crates and beds suitable for the puppy, but the puppy soon outgrows them. The initial cost primarily accounts for the dog itself and any other items required when bringing the dog home for the first time. Even after the German Shepherd has made your home its home, you will still have to pay some pretty hefty bills for the remainder of its life. Although the initial and monthly costs for this dog are a bit high, they are required for this dog to live a happy life. If you cannot afford to provide a German Shepherd the sort of life it needs and deserves, simply do not get a German Shepherd. What factors determine the price of a German Shepherd Puppy? The price of a German Shepherd puppy does vary, depending on her age, color, bloodline, litter size, location, as well as breeding cost. German Shepherds obtained from animal shelters and rescue organizations are relatively inexpensive because they charge only enough to cover their costs. Here are the 5 most prominent factors that will affect the price of a German Shepherd: 1. Age Age is the most important factor in determining the price of a German Shepherd Dog. All in all, it has a lot to do with the desirability of a cuddly puppy. Puppies that are only weeks old will cost the most. It is because this marks the beginning of the most precious moments of a puppy. The demand drives up the price. The price of German Shepherd puppies of 12 weeks or older will start to decrease. Adult German Shepherds will be offered at much lower prices because some people see them as less desirable. Another reason is that the new owner may need to set a budget for health issues related to senior dogs. Coat Color Some colors are more expensive than others. For German Shepherds, colors such as white will cost more than the usual black and tan. This is because these rare coat colors are more difficult to breed. Bloodline Although purebred German Shepherds puppies are the most sought-after ones, mixed-breed pups usually cost much less and have the potential to be healthier than many purebreds. In general, German Shepherds have working lines and show lines, totaling five different variations. We will get into them later in this article. Litter size It refers to the number of puppies in a litter. Usually, the more the number of puppies in a litter, the cheaper the price will become. Location The location from where you purchase your German Shepherd can actually affect how much you pay. Areas with a lower cost of living, or places where there is less demand will typically charge lower prices than more populated cities. Certain states or cities may even have more regulations on breeding which may increase the cost, thus the price of a German Shepherd pup. And these all come at a cost for the breeders. What are the different variations of the German Shepherd bloodline and their prices? While the German Shepherd is a dog breed of its own, you may probably stumble upon different variations. Purebred German Shepherds come in many different sizes, colors, coloration patterns, and body styles. In general, German Shepherds are divided into working lines and show lines, totaling five different variations. Here is a four-minute video from which you can learn about their variations: 1. They have a distinctive angulation with their back legs shorter than their front legs, thinner bones, and significantly smaller heads. They come in quite a few colors, mostly solid with occasional bi-color variations, including black and tan saddle, solid back, solid white, and saddle sable. But their obedient and playful character make them fantastic pets. There are certain measurement minimums for their hips and elbows. This results in a stunning, very specific, and uniform appearance. These dogs have a very strong, pronounced build with a black and tan saddle, and solid back. They make good house protectors and need a lot of exercises and to be trained frequently. These dogs are very social. So they are perfect for families with kids. This is the line of GSD you would normally see in movies. They are also closest to the original breed that was bred and developed by Max von Stephanitz, who is acknowledged as the father of German Shepherd Dogs. With a stable temperament, they excel in working jobs, and also make awesome family pets. Rigid control of the original DDR breed prevents the gene poll from diluting. They must be free from any history of hip dysplasia, among other health conditions, to be able to reproduce. This resulted in a very distinct look — with large heads, large bones, and a shiny dark coat. The Czech further tightened the breeding standards, resulting in arguably the most intense breed of German Shepherd available to date. But they are extremely loyal and obedient, with a pleasant temperament. They could be the best guard dog to protect people. But they are extremely rare nowadays. Other factors that affect the cost of a German Shepherd A puppy whose parents and often grandparents and other relatives are hunting champions has the potential to excel in these areas as well. And it will cost you more than any puppy who is the offspring of just average parents. And the most expensive German Shepherds are those adults with proven records as show dogs, K9, or breeding dogs. What is a reasonable price for a German Shepherd puppy? Reputable breeders, when pricing their German Shepherd puppies, must factor in the cost of breeding, feeding, raising, and caring for the pups as well as their mother. Less - The German Shepherds are medium to large-sized dogs , well-balanced, muscular dog, slightly longer than tall, with a medium length coat, erect ears, and a low-set natural tail that normally reaches to the hock and is carried in a slight curve like a saber. The outline of the German Shepherd Dog is made up of smooth curves rather than angles. The head is in proportion to the size of the body, strong without appearing coarse or fine. Gender differences are readily apparent. The German Shepherd Dog is confident and fearless, willing to be approached, yet a certain level of aloofness towards strangers is acceptable. When working, the German Shepherd is alert and eager, adapting well to new tasks. Lack of confidence is a serious defect in the character of a German Shepherd. The structure of this breed was designed for efficient locomotion, particularly at the trot, so poor movement is another serious fault. History Less - The German Shepherd Dog is a relatively young breed, developed almost single-handedly in the first half of the twentieth century by a German cavalry officer, Max von Stephanitz, president of the Verein far Deutsche Schaferhunde S. Using a variety of German sheepdogs as his foundation stock, von Stephanitz developed a distinctive breed in a very short period of time, due in large part to the authoritarian practices of the German dog fancy at that time. Von Stephanitz emphasized utility and intelligence in his breeding program, enabling the German Shepherd Dog to switch easily from herding duties to other fields of work, particularly military and police work. All things German were shunned and popularity slumped. After the war, however, movie star Rin-tin-tin stimulated interest in the breed again. The striking good looks of this breed, combined with its remarkable intelligence and loyalty, have made it a favorite working and companion dog. If you are looking to buy a German Shepherd puppy, then you should find one from a reputable breeder. While these puppies are more expensive, a reputable breeder can guarantee the health and behavior of the puppy. These dogs are prone to genetic diseases such as hip and elbow dysplasia. These health issues can be avoided by genetically testing the parents, which is something reputable breeders usually do. When improperly raised puppies might have behavioral issues and can cause a lot of damage if they bite someone. A good breeder will have their dogs pass a temperament test. German Shepherd Dog Price While most dogs in shelters are adults, adopting a German Shepherd is a great way to find a dog without supporting unethical breeding. Sometimes these hardworking shepherd dogs are given up because they are very energetic. Not everyone is able to take care of a dog that needs a lot of attention and exercise. Some people buy a German Shepherd puppy without understanding the work involved in caring for this breed. Why Are They So Expensive? Breeding a healthy and well-behaved German Shepherd puppy is not easy! It is not as simple as crossing German Shepherds together. However, if you want a puppy of good temperament that is genetically healthy, there are other costs involved in the breeding and raising. This is especially important for a German Shepherd. You do not want a puppy that grows up to be aggressive or that suffers from mobility issues due to hip and elbow dysplasia. Papers A paperless German Shepherd puppy will be the cheapest. Typically breeders invest as little as possible in these pups. You get a puppy just how it is, without knowing its pedigree or background. A puppy with health certifications, temperament test results, and registration papers costs more than this. However, those papers will be beneficial not just for you, but also the puppy. This means your puppy meets the breed standard and is a purebred dog. The last thing you want is to buy a German Shepherd wolf-mix thinking it is purebred. Veterinarian Visits Reputable breeders not only genetically health test the parents, but they will also take the puppy to see a vet before 8 weeks for a basic health check. During these visits breeders will also have the puppies vaccinated, dewormed and placed on preventatives. When you buy a German Shepherd puppy from a reputable breeder, they will offer you a health guarantee. Most will also be able to provide you proof that the puppy has passed a temperament test. Training Some breeders also take the time to socialize and train their puppies. Many experienced breeders have a specialized training program that begins the process of potty training and basic obedience. This will mean you have an easier time housetraining your puppy, but you will have to pay for their efforts! These are all good signs that the puppy you are buying is of good quality. This will mean you are more likely to avoid any temperament issues or having to pay for vet visits to diagnose and treat hip and elbow dysplasia. Bloodlines Breeders who focus on breeding championship bloodlines will charge more for their puppies. A family might not need such a high-quality German Shepherd. All they need is a healthy and well-behaved puppy that will bring them years of happiness. However, there are many people who need a working dog or show dog. The most expensive dogs are those that are bred to be champions or protective and hard-working. Some breeders spend thousands of dollars just training a world class service dog. A family friendly guard dog with a protective temperament is not easy to breed consistently. Breeders have to factor in not just the genetics, but also the temperament and training. Origin The most expensive types of German Shepherds are those that are imported directly from Germany. Breeders must pay to stud and import these dogs which is not cheap. Since the German Shepherd breed originated in Germany, breeders in the US import dogs from Germany to breed puppies with a purebred lineage. Breeding in Europe is more regulated so the bloodlines are better protected. These puppies are known as European German Shepherds and are slightly different. They are smaller, have straighter backs and brighter coat colors. Some people think they look similar to a belgian malinois. Most European dogs are bred to be working dogs, while American dogs are more frequently bred for companionship. This is the same for American and German Rottweilers and American vs. European Dobermans. All of these breeder will be able to provide: Pedigree and kennel club registration. Documents that certify the puppy is free of any disease and has been checked by a veterinarian. A health warranty. Health records that guarantee the parents are genetically healthy and will not pass on elbow or hip dysplasia. These German Shepherd breeders all breed their puppies in accordance with the breed standard. None of them will sell puppies that are not registered with the American Kennel Club. Another good place to start looking for breeders is the American Kennel Club marketplace. Many of these puppies are bred to be family dogs and come with their papers. As you start looking into more well-known breeders or those that produce dogs of championship or working bloodlines, then the price of a German Shepherd starts to increase. Julia was a German Shepherd bred by the Harrison K-9 facility, highly trained in protection. She could also understand commands in three different languages. Her intelligence, as well as her ability to protect, were why she was priced so highly. Julia was bought by a billionaire businessman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The rarest coat color is panda, which is why it is also the most expensive. These German Shepherds are black and white. It is a piebald pattern where the black coat is splotched with large patches of white. Some puppies can have other colors like tan, instead of white. Panda dogs are purebred, but the rarity of this mutation makes them very hard to find. There are very few breeders that sell the panda color. And he actually cost nothing! By the end of his life, Rin Tin Tin had appeared in 27 Hollywood films. Rin Tin Tin most notably helped Warner Bros. But these dogs come in more than just this classic color! There are 11 colors that are recognized by the breed standard. Check out the table below for some German Shepherd prices based on coat color. The tan color covers the chest, belly and legs. White A white puppy has a furry coat that is entirely white, allowing it to blend in with the snow. Its eyes and nose are black as coal. Black A black German Shepherd has a coat that is entirely black. Any other color would classify them as a bi-color. Blue A blue German Shepherd is not literally blue, but has a gray color with a bluish hue. Sable The sable color is one of the most common colors, but is a bit more interesting than the black and tan. The hairs of these dogs have bands of tan and black, giving them a very unique coloring. Some of the factors that contribute to this cost are: Food. If a breeder tries to tell you that his puppies are healthy because their parents never had any issues — do not believe him! It is impossible to diagnose e. Where can you find cheap German Shepherd Dogs? The question is — do you want to purchase a dog with questionable health and temperament? These dogs often are not purebred German Shepherd puppies, but are mixed with e. Labradors, Pitbulls or Golden Retrievers. If you end up with a dog with genetically based health conditions however, be prepared to spend a multiple of the original purchase price on vet costs! Temperament and behavior While a lot of good manners can be taught through consistent training, temperament is genetic to a certain level. When you buy an extra cheap German Shepherd puppy, you not only get a dog with questionable health, but also with unpredictable temperament! Even aggression can be genetic and can be passed on from the mom and dad to the offspring. You can save yourself a lot of time, nerves and money spent on future behavioral training by getting a well-bred and more expensive dog. What is the most expensive type of German Shepherd? Like in many dog breeds, certain rare German Shepherd colors are much more expensive than the most common colors and patterns. It is much more important that your puppy has a sound temperament and fits in well with your family and lifestyle than that he has a certain rare look. These dogs are mutts German Shepherds mixed with Miniature Poodles, Shelties or other smaller breeds. Once more, be certain to not decide on your future dog based on looks alone. A stable temperament and good health is much more integral than a certain size or weight. Working lines vs show lines The German Shepherd was originally bred as a working dog. Since his original use as a shepherd dog however, he has filled many different roles — from guarding properties over being used in the show ring to participating in Schutzhund and IPO trails. Depending on which lines your German Shepherd Dog comes from, the prices can vary a lot! Show line German Shepherds are the dogs that are bred for conformation shows. These are the type of dogs you should decide on if you would like a shepherd puppy as a pet and companion animal. If you are interested in using your German Shepherd as a protection dog and to participate in IPO trials, you should pick one from working lines. There are a lot of highly successful working line breeders both in North America and Europe. For this price, you get an absolutely flawless dog with extensive skills and perfect obedience. Some US dog owners interested in Schutzhund choose to import a puppy from old European working lines. While this might sound insanely high for a pet dog owner, for Schutzhund enthusiasts it is a typical price for a pedigreed German Shepherd pup. How much does it cost a month to own a German Shepherd?
