You could use this pee pad holder as a solution for smaller puppies but if you have a large breed, such as a labrador, your pup will quickly outgrow it… Not only that, but puppies are considerably more likely to play with the pee pads, biting and tearing them to shreds. It is also worth mentioning that this litter pan does not have a non-slip base: We were able to prevent the PuppyGoHere pan from sliding around the room by either pressing it up against a wall or sitting the litter box on top of a rug. If you have an older dog who lifts the leg, you might want to consider the next size up. When it came down to performance, the following pee pad holders fell short in one way or another. After all, each one is capable of holding a pee pad. However, based on our testing, we see little reason to choose these pee pad holders over our recommendations above. Made from a flexible silicone, it grips all floors, from wood and laminate to carpet. Just one problem, there is no way to hold most pee pads in place. So, without any way to secure the pee pad to the holder, you lose a lot of advantages a traditional pee pad offers. Worse, if the pea pad leaks, the flippy-floppy silicone is difficult to keep steady as you walk it across your home — there will be spills. This splash guard is designed to stop dogs lifting their leg and over-spraying the pee pad holder. Instead, the pee hits the splash guard and runs down onto the pee pad. In Theory. You see, what actually happens is the pee runs down the splashguard and pools underneath the pee pad. In one instance, our chihuahua tester popped the splash guard out of place just by bumping it with his foot as he raised his leg. As you can expect, pee went everywhere. Then there is the grip. The Blyss Pets Klean Paws was one of the few pee pad holders that featured a grate. We found that during use, the pee pad can still move around. This feature made the pee pad holder significantly more easy to store when not in use. The pee pad holder was let down by the four plastic clips located in each corner. If your digs at the pee pad, or it catches his paw as he steps, the pee pad will scrunch up or even come loose. Iris makes four different pee pad holders. I previously I thought pee pad holders were somewhat of a gimmick. Stop your puppy playing with pee pads To your puppy, everything is a toy. Especially a pee pad. Even worse, your puppy could accidentally eat these small pieces. A pee pad holder makes it difficult for your dog to grab the pee pad with his mouth. Even a pee pad holder without a grate offers enough of a deterrent that a playful puppy will look for easier toys to play with — keep chew toys or your pups favorite plush dog toy on nearby! And because pee pads are not only thin, but lightweight, this can cause issues… If your dog catches the underside of the pad with his foot on the pee pad it can fold over itself or even flip upside down. When this happens, your dog can pee on the waterproof underside of the pee pad, causing pee to spill everywhere. Gross, right? Well, as I learned, it can get worse… During our pee pad review, one of our testers left the back door open. A strong gust of wind blew through the door and picked the pee pad up like a feather. Pee pad holders provide your pee pad with some much needed weight, helping to prevent accidents such as these. Puppies in particular would happily step across a wet pee pad once they had done their business. While it may not make the same mess as a spill, do you really want pee paw prints tracking through your house? Probably not, especially if you have carpet. Some pee pad holders feature a grate system. This grate sits on top of the pee pad. Instead of pooling on top, pee trickles down through the grate — no matter how many times your pup walks across it, his paws will remain dry! They help with dogs that pee ont he edge of a pad I still remember back to when I had to potty train my dog. He would forever pee on the edge of the pad, where, where the plastic liner failed to absorb the pee. As a result, it would flow onto the floor. To him, any pee on the pad was a success. To me, it was the difference between pulling out all the cleaning products and sanitizing the area. No more spills Finally, pee pad holders are easy to carry. It beats folding the pee pad up on itself and carrying it across your room — you are asking for drips or leaks. Simply pick the pee pad holder up and walk it over trash can. The pee pad holder will contain any pee that missed the pad contained. Once done, simply clean your pee pad holder in the sink. They are not designed to be chewed on — give your pup a good chew toy instead! There are also no extra-large pee pad holders for big breeds. The coat can have a light to dark appearance, and is always a deeper, richer shade than the fawns. The shade can appear with a mask or without, according to DNA makeup of dog. The picture above is considered a maskless blue fawn french bulldog. The nose is blue, and the body can have a blue tint overlaying the fawn color. There is an absence of mask on face, but nose will remain a shade of blue. Above is a maskless lilac fawn french bulldog. Your Name required. Cream Frenchies Cream Frenchies have a coat color that is pale or light-colored, which is often described as a shade of off-white or ivory. The Black Mask pattern gives the impression that the dog is wearing a mask, which is why it is called a black mask. Take a look for yourself! The white patches vary in size and shape, and they can be solid or have brindle spots on them. Usually, the white patches are on their chests, however, they can be present anywhere on their coat… their head, back, paws, chest, tail, etc. Not all black Frenchies look the same! While the black coat color is not recognized by the AKC, it is still a desirable and popular color for many French Bulldog lovers. A lack of pigment cells The reason for this is that these genes are associated with a lack of pigment cells which give the appearance of their coats. This affects the small hairs in the ear There are small hairs in the inner ear that are called cilia, and when there is an extreme lack of pigment cells, the cilia may not develop properly, resulting in deafness. Hearing tests can rule out deafness If you are interested in a predominantly white French Bulldog or are just concerned about the possibility of your new puppy being deaf, be sure to ask your breeder about performing a BAER test. Blue Frenchies This one always confused me at first… Blue Frenchies are not actually blue! They have a coat color that is often described as a light grey or silver-blue color, rather than a true blue color. The color is a result of a dilution gene that affects the black pigment in the coat, resulting in a lighter color. Blue Frenchies can vary in shade, ranging from a pale grey color to a darker shade of blue-grey. While there is testing available for Color Dilution Alopecia, there is no cure. The Blue color comes from a dilution gene that affects the black pigment in the coat, while the Fawn color is a result of a Tan or Cream base color. A picture can explain better than I can… just look at my Blue Fawn Frenchie! Merle Frenchies Merle Frenchies have a coat color that is characterized by a marbled or dappled pattern. Not AKC recognized Due to these health concerns, the Merle coat color is not recognized by the AKC for French Bulldogs, and reputable breeders typically avoid breeding Merle Frenchies to ensure the health and well-being of the dogs. Chocolate Frenchies The brown chocolate-like Frenchie is one of the cutest colors out there in my opinion! The chocolate color can vary in shade, ranging from a lighter, milk chocolate color to a dark, almost black chocolate hue. The chocolate color is a result of a recessive gene that affects the black pigment in the coat, resulting in a brown color. As the name implies, Chocolate is a dark-brown coat color that is quite rare to see in Frenchies. Never seen a Chocolate Frenchie? French Bulldog Markings officially recognized by the AKC are… Piebald— A coat with large areas of white, mixed with patches of any other color. Black mask— A black mask around the face that covers the muzzle and eyes. The rest of the coat can be any color. Black markings— Any black patches on the coat, which may be small or large and can appear anywhere on the body. White markings— Any white patches on the coat, which may be small or large and can appear anywhere on the body. Brindle markings— A pattern of dark stripes on a lighter background color. The stripes can be any shade of black, brown, or gray, and may be thin or wide. However, as mentioned earlier, Frenchies can also have other markings that are not recognized by the AKC but can still be present in the breed. Other French Bulldog Markings You might see Frenchies with these markings, but the AKC would disqualify a Frenchie with these markings not important unless you want your dog to compete in AKC dog shows Ticked— this marking refers to small dots or flecks of color on a white or light-colored background. Spotted— this marking refers to small, evenly distributed spots of color on a white or light-colored background. Tan Points— this marking refers to tan or rust-colored markings on specific areas of the body, such as the eyebrows, cheeks, legs, and under the tail. This coat pattern is not officially recognized by the AKC. What Ticked Frenchies look like A Frenchie with a Ticked Coat Pattern Piebald Frenchies The piebald pattern is when there are spots of unpigmented white fur on top of the pigmented colored fur. The truth about most of these fad colors is that they are made by breeding Frenchies with other dog breeds. Believe it or not, these Fluffy Frenchies are actually purebred Frenchies— the gene for fluffiness is just extremely rare. Breeding Frenchies is a lot of work! What makes breeding French Bulldogs and hence Frenchie puppies so expensive is that they require artificial insemination and c-sections to reproduce. Their very slim hips make it very difficult, if not nearly impossible for them to reproduce naturally. Not to mention, vet bills, high-quality foods for the puppies, and housing just add to the cost of breeding Frenchies. These colors are not officially recognized by the AKC. Blue Fawn — This is what color my Frenchie is. While Frenchies may come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and patterns, there are only a handful that are officially recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC. Posted on. Sometimes just looking at pics online do not do them justice. See Chocolate Puppies! In order for your Frenchie to express chocolate on their coat they must inherit two copies of the gene. Chocolate is not a testable gene as of right now and the only way to know if your dog carries chocolate is to breed to chocolate frenchie or one who carries chocolate. Just as with the other color variations you can have brindling in the coat or solid. The gene that determines this is on the K-locus. If they inherit one or two copies of the brindle Kbr gene they will express brindling in their coat. If not copies of the brindling gene , then they will be solid. Chocolates may also have tan points which has to do with the A locus. If they inherit one or two copies of the tan points gene, At, they will express tan points. You can also have chocolate pied Frenchies which is located on the S-locus. The Frenchie must inherit two copies of the gene for the pied expression. We have not had a little chocolate Frenchie. These lovely canines are highly sought-after, thanks to their unique chocolaty brown color. However, not every brown-looking French Bulldog is a Chocolate. Sometimes, fawn and brindle can make a Frenchie look that way. It was the only criterion to determine if a Frenchie is Chocolate or not. But recent studies have shown the Chocolate gene can occur elsewhere too. In France, they became pretty popular as companion dogs. Some say the bat-like upright ears were a natural characteristic in bulldogs that breeders saw as defective. Others say the ears came after the French crossed bulldogs with local ratter dogs. Either way, these tiny bulldogs became their own breed called the French Bulldog. Save Big On Dog Essentials! Welcome to our pack! Chocolate French Bulldog appearance Chocolate Frenchies have a rare and gorgeous coat color, which is like a chocolaty shade of brown. Dysplastic dogs generally are not used for breeding, but may lead long, happy lives. The radiographic appearance of the hips does not always correlate with clinical symptoms, and many dysplastic Goldens show no outward signs until middle or older age when secondary arthritis may cause increasing discomfort. However, regular, moderate exercise and weight control are important to managing all dogs with hip dysplasia, even those without symptoms. Like hip dysplasia, many affected dogs have no symptoms, yet can pass more serious disease to their offspring. For other affected dogs, symptoms range from mild stiffness to severe lameness. Elbow dysplasia is primarily inherited and development is believed to be influenced by multiple genes. However, severity of elbow dysplasia may also be increased by rapid growth during early puppyhood as a result of over-feeding. Dogs must be 24 months of age to receive final elbow certification, and screening elbow x-rays should be submitted to the OFA for diagnostic evaluation. Although dogs with elbow dysplasia generally are not bred, many lead normal, happy lives. These cataracts, sometimes called juvenile cataracts, usually appear between years of age, but fortunately do not usually cause any functional impairment. Non-hereditary cataracts also occur, and examination by a board-certified veterinary ophthalmologist is necessary to determine if the cataract is suspected to be hereditary. An eye disease called pigmentary uveitis is of emerging concern in the breed, and while it is believed to have a genetic basis, at this time there are no satisfactory tools that breeders can use to be certain to avoid producing affected puppies. Pigmentary uveitis typically develops in middle-aged or senior Goldens, making it very important to continue yearly eye examinations for the lifetime of any dog that has been bred. Early stages of the disease are usually very mild with no outward signs, but as pigmentary uveitis progresses, symptoms such as redness and tearing may appear, and over time the disease may progress to glaucoma. This can be a serious quality of life issue because pain from glaucoma may necessitate surgery to remove the affected eye s. Eyelid and eyelash disorders also may occur in the breed, and are generally believed to have a hereditary basis. Entropion and ectropion are conditions that cause the eyelids to roll inward or outward, respectively; and distichiasis is a condition in which misdirected hairs touch and irritate the surface of the eye. Depending on severity, surgery may be advised to correct these problems. Although dogs with these conditions can receive eye certifications, these diagnoses will be noted on the forms. Annual examination by a board certified veterinary ophthalmologist is recommended for the lifetime of any dog that has been bred, because hereditary eye problems can develop at varying ages. In particular, pigmentary uveitis often develops very late in life. In addition, a few families of Goldens carry genes for progressive retinal atrophy PRA , a gradual deterioration of the light-receptive area retina of the eye that may result in blindness. There are several DNA tests to help guide breeders using these lines, so that they can avoid producing affected puppies. It is acceptable to breed dogs that are carriers for PRA, providing the mate has been DNA tested as normal; and puppies produced from such matings are not at elevated risk to develop the disease. While this is not common in the breed, it can be serious, so all prospective breeding dogs should be examined over the age of 12 months by a board certified veterinary cardiologist. If a murmur is detected through auscultation listening with a stethoscope , additional diagnostic tests are available and may be recommended. Normal cardiac exams should be certified by the OFA, and dogs with hereditary heart disease generally should not be bred. Many breeders use lines with health clearances that extend back to multiple generations of ancestors, and health clearances that include grandparents, great-grandparents, and even beyond offer additional layers of protection to the puppies. Risk can never be zero — and in some cases environmental influences also play a role — but health testing of several generations of ancestors offers the best possible chance that the puppy will not develop these genetic diseases. There are additional conditions such as hypothyroidism, epilepsy, skin disease, cancer, etc, for which routine screening of Golden Retrievers is not performed.
