Its diet requirement varies in whatever life stage your dog belongs to. What does this mean? An active and growing puppy requirement is twice more than what an adult dog needs for the elderly ones. Most people feed their dogs with canned food, however there are tons of different types and labels out there in the market and you are hard-pressed to even know where to start and what to choose. We will also answer frequently asked questions to ensure that your German Shepherd dog get what it deserves. Whichever the case, your main goal is ensuring that they have a nutritious food that promotes healthy growth and energy levels, right? The problem is that the grains do not provide the same nutritional value as other forms of carbohydrates, and often cause digestion problems in your dog. Real Beef Is The 1 Ingredient: Some of the bigger named dog food companies have also started using animal byproducts, such as chicken innards, to increase the amount of protein in their recipes. These byproducts are not nearly as dense in protein as real meat, which is why Purina makes real beef their 1 ingredient. These recipes are loaded with the high quality protein your dog needs to maintain healthy muscle production. Crafted By In-House Nutritionists: Purina offers a wide range of recipes and flavors that contain no added preservatives or artificial flavorings. Caused Reactions In Overly Sensitive Dogs: While Purina went with a grain-free recipe for their Beyond Natural line of foods, some customers have also reported that it did cause sensitivity in their pets. If your dog has shown sensitivity to foods in the past, you should also keep this fact in mind. Buying Advice Purina has put a lot of time and energy into formulating their Beyond Natural line of wet dog foods. With a wide range of recipes to choose from, you can find one for even the pickiest of eaters. High Quality Complex Carbohydrates: Complex carbs, unlike simple sugars, give your pet a long lasting boost of energy. Simple sugars will give them a quick energy boost, but them make them crash, acting lethargic throughout the day. Because of their wide distribution channels, they make up for the lower price by selling more units overall. That means you save money, and can easily find it in most big box and pet stores. Cons Dented Cans: Ordering canned dog food online presents one major problem: the shipping process. Some of them were unable to be opened with a can opener. Picky Dogs Turn Their Noses Up: Even offering a wide range of recipes for you to choose from, some customers have also reported that their dogs still snubbed their nose at Natural Balance, and refused to eat it. When you have to feed more than 1, you may need to consider picking up a second job just to support their diet. Or, you can look at the IAMS Proactive Health line of dog foods that are making a name for themselves for being so affordable, while still tasting great and being packed full of nutritious ingredients. This slow cooking process creates a great tasting broth. In order to gain control over the infestation, you need to be able to stop new eggs from forming into adults, effectively breaking the life cycle. Their prices are some of the most affordable on the market, so if you are on a strict budget, IAMS is a definite contender that should be considered. With free shipping, you can save almost 50 cents a can, compared to what you can expect to pay in your local big box stores or pet warehouses. You can also consider setting up automatic shipping, and have new orders sent straight to your door each month — ensuring you never run out. Their Choice Cuts line of wet dog foods attempts to position Pedigree as a gourmet choice in the wet dog food market. Keep reading to find out! Pros Essential Oils And Extra Minerals: Each can is also infused with essential fatty acids, and extra vitamins and minerals to help promote strong internal systems, a healthy coat, and skin. Choice Cuts Of Meat: One area that Pedigree did address was in the inclusion of actual meat products inside of this line of wet dog foods. Irresistible Taste: A lot of the dogs that eat Pedigree are very fond of the flavor. Each can is cooked with the meat and water combined to create a great tasting gravy that your dogs will lick clean from their bowl. These percentages keep your dogs active without feeling lethargic, and have just enough protein to help their muscles burn fat, keeping them from becoming overweight. Mixture Of Flavors: If your dog happens to snub their nose at one flavor, there are still around 10 more flavors to choose from. If you want to give your dog a variety, you could feed them a different can every day of the week, and still have a few left over. Subscription Delivery Available: Ordering from Amazon gives you the option to have your order automatically refilled on the interval you set. Cons Includes Grains: A large portion of the ingredients in each can are, indeed, grain based. Pedigree uses a slick method of renaming different grain based products to keep the overall total from being the 1 ingredient on the back of the label. Causes Pickiness In Non-Picky Dogs: Some customers have reported that their dogs, who normally eat everything in sight, would snub their noses at the Pedigree Choice Cuts line of foods. For this reason alone, you may want to order a single can to test the waters before you start purchasing in bulk. Buying Advice While we commend Pedigree for making drastic changes over the last few years, we recommend you click on the button below to read reviews from other customers, and then make a decision on your own as to whether or not Pedigree Choice Cuts is right for your dog. Probably even your great-grandparents, for that matter. We all do, and your dogs will, too. Each recipe in the Alpo Chop House line of foods is inspired by the same dishes we all love to get at our favorite steakhouse restaurants. Contains Essential Vitamins And Minerals: A lot of dog food companies are more interested in their profits, which means excluding high end ingredients that give your dog the nutrients they need to thrive. Purina, though, uses only the highest quality, all natural ingredients that deliver exactly the vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients your dog requires to live a long, happy, and healthy life. Excellent Customer Service: Purina is not some fly-by-night brand who is going to take your money one day, and be gone the next. Cons Price Recently Increased: This is the way it goes with business. When you have something successful, the prices tend to increase over time. However, Purina recently doubled the cost of their Alpo Chop Steakhouse line of dog foods. Customers Less Than Pleased With Shipping: While not necessarily a reflection on the company itself, a lot of customers have reported receiving their cases of food with a large amount of dents in the cans. Regardless, we thought you should know that this is a potential problem customers have been reporting on. Each can of Freedom Lamb Dinner wet dog food by Blue Buffalo is specially formulated with real lamb, potatoes, and oatmeal, and is naturally infused with essential vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids to promote a healthy nervous system, brain, bones, and muscles. Blue Buffalo, though, includes healthy complex carbs like sweet potatoes and oatmeal that both enhance flavor, and give your dog energy in between meals. Natural, Holistic Formula For All Dogs: There are zero animal byproducts like lungs, noses, hooves, ears, and eyes inside of the Freedom line of wet dog foods. These products are great for adding filler, but are not loaded down with the vitamins and minerals that your dog needs to stay healthy. The combination makes a great broth that dogs go crazy for, and it really extends the life of each can of wet food — especially when you have multiple dogs. You may need to wash your hands after you serve it to them. Another one negative factor about feeding our shepherd pups with canned tuna is the risk that we are giving them from mercury levels. German shepherds can eat tuna but you need to make sure you do it just on the right timing. For example, if your dog weighs 40 pounds, they can have it once every nine days or if yours is bigger, then once every 7 days will be enough. The amount of tuna that you feed them solely depends on the size of your German shepherd dog. How many cans of dog food should German shepherd eat? But what do they actually mean by that? Active and hardworking German shepherd dogs are most likely to eat more than what a couch potato German shepherd. Health considerations— Vets will recommend a good diet that would suit your senior or sick German shepherd. But to give you an approximate amount for your german shepherd dog with good health and fitness. Is it okay to feed a dog just canned food? This question can be answered by the dog parents themselves. Whether it is kibble, canned or home processed, each dog is different as well as their appetite. Some dogs are used to eating kibble alone, some are solely canned food while some others are mixed. Either way, just as long as you feed your pup the right amount, securing the quality of the food you give, not overlooking the nutritional factors needed, then your good is to go! Conslusion As the market is very much competitive against each other, we as dog parents are sometimes lead to being so indecisive of what to really feed our dogs. Their bones are getting stronger and their muscles are being primed for a lifetime of activity. As a result, your puppy is actually going to need more nutrients now than they will when they get older. Many of this information is recommended and regulated by the Association of American Feed Control. You can look out for the small AAFO seal of approval on the packaging as a quick way to determine if a food is suitable for your dog. High Protein Content The most important thing your dog will need as both a puppy and an adult is protein. Protein is responsible for muscle growth and energy. This is higher than the 18 percent that adults need. However, we recommend going as high as 27 percent. Look out for ingredients like chicken, beef, lamb, and fish. Meat meals are also acceptable. As long as the protein is identified, it can benefit your pup. Avoid choosing foods that have byproducts or unlabeled mystery meats. They can do more harm than good. First, it acts as a source of energy. Fat is converted into usable glucose, which provides an ongoing supply of energy. Secondly, fat can support the circulatory system and skin health. However, this only applies to healthy fats. Omega fatty acids work to keep the skin supple and improve blood circulation throughout the body. One specific type of omega fatty acid, DHA, can even support the development of the brain and eyes. This type of fat comes ingredients like flaxseed and salmon oil. Once your dog reached adulthood, you can lower that amount to 5 percent. Calcium and Phosphorus Calcium and phosphorus are crucial for proper bone and joint development. Puppies need just the right amount of these minerals to stay healthy. Eating too much can lead to skeletal deformities and unhealthy growth spurts. Too little and your dog runs the risk of developing bone spurs and other ailments in the future. The most common issues that plague this breed are hip dysplasia and arthritis. With hip dysplasia, the bones in the hip joint did not form correctly. This leads to immense pain and difficulties in walking. Unfortunately, the condition can remain undetected until your dog is older. Having the right amount of calcium and phosphorus can do a lot to prevent the condition. Calcium is typically derived from dairy products or eggs. Phosphorus is found in meat products and organs. German Shepherd puppies need to have 1 part of phosphorus for every 1. As long as the food has this ratio, it should be good for your pup. Complex Carbs Carbohydrates are a source of energy for dogs. There are no guidelines when it comes to the amount of carbs needed for pups to stay healthy. Cheaper dog foods use fillers like corn, wheat, and soy. These should be avoided. Healthy alternatives include sweet potatoes, peas, and whole oats. These are all considered to be complex carbs. They have a low glycemic index, which means that they are absorbed slowly throughout the day rather than all at once. Complex carbohydrates also act as a healthy source of fiber. Despite their small size as young dogs, they can pack away a lot of food. The meals need to split up to ensure that your dog can process everything before they eat again. The breed is susceptible to excessive weight gain and obesity. Your dog needs to gain weight in a healthy manner. Otherwise, they can develop musculoskeletal problems. Furthermore, Bloat is a serious risk. Bloat occurs when dogs eat too much food too fast. Air gets trapped in their stomach, causing it to twist. At around six months old, you can start to transition to two meals a day. The amount of food you feed your dog will depend on their body condition and the calorie content of the food. Follow the guidelines on the packaging and consult with your vet to see what your pup needs. Which is Better: Wet or Dry Food? Wet and dry food both have their advantages. Once your dog is weaned off their mother, you should start them off with canned food. At 12 weeks of age, start to add in kibble. Slowly take away the canned food and proceed with the dry kibble for their daily meals. Kibble is your best bet as your dog gets older. Not only is more nutritionally dense than canned food, but dry food also has the added benefit of scrubbing their teeth as they chew. Canned food should be used as a supplement only. It has a lot more moisture than kibble. So, your dog will need to eat more of it to get all the fuel they need. It should be reserved for dogs with dental issues or those who have difficulties eating normal kibble. By choosing a high-quality canned food and kibble, you can support their growing body and set them up for a healthy life ahead. It contains high-quality proteins that are recommended by vets for the development of lean muscles. The ingredients are all-natural and designed to provide the essential nutrients that your puppy needs. The balanced minerals in the food also promote good bone development. Bernedoodle Names: Stats. First of all, naming is a task that needs a lot of dedication. When people come to know about these names, they also tend to remember only that name throughout the lifetime of the living or non-living things whose name we are discussing. This is one of the most important choices that life will give you, and you have to play this game very well to ensure your position as the owner of your own pet at a high level. This is not where you should take illogical risks because that will only cause damage in the name that you are deciding. If you think very carefully, you are also doing good to yourself when you are giving a nice and deserving name to your pet. This is because whenever you come back home and want to call your pet near you, you have to call it by its name, actually the name that you are going to give it. If you give it a boring name at the present moment, when in the future, after long, dull days you will want someone to relax with, you again have to call out that boring name to bring your pet closer to you. Sometimes it is also seen that boring names are the main reason responsible for distancing a pet from its owner. And when you think of the scenario for a better name, it will be easier for you to call it out and bring it closer to you so that both of you can enjoy your free time relaxing on the couch, watching films, having food, etc. This can also become the reason for making your pet come closer to you. And for these reasons only, we suggest you name your pet very carefully because it is something that you are deciding for the creature who will carry it for a lifetime. So we want you not to take the risk of doing it all alone and give us the chance to help you a little. No, not by directly suggesting some name ideas, but we still want to help you indirectly by giving you some tips that will help you name your pet on your own. The only thing you need to do is read the following tips and think of a perfect name with the help of that. Think Of a Name Which Refers To Something Very Affectionate As we have said several times in this article, the Bernedoodle vibe inherited its loyal and friendly nature from its parent dog. So you can reasonably estimate that they are also very playful and affectionate towards their masters and their families and actual human beings. This is why they are also considered perfect family pets. Their nature is very similar to that of an average domesticated dog. Pick A Friendly Name They are also very friendly towards younger kids, just like dogs, and they become good friends for a lifetime, which also becomes why the parents of these kids are not afraid to keep their kids alone because they have a friend who will protect them with life. But this is also a kind of cycle. These pets are very affectionate and love the beings surrounding them. But in a very similar way, they also want back the love they give and want a lot of attention from their owners and other human beings they have come across because they need the same amount of affection from these beings whom they consider friends very quickly what they give away to these beings. Think Of a Name Which Refers To Something Intelligent From one parent, as they have inherited the loyal part, from the other one, they have inherited the genes of intelligence. As they are the hybrid of the mountain dog and the poodle, their characteristics also show the fact and prove it. They are also prominent in structure and thus feared by people and so can be used to keep away burglars from your house, and they also use their intelligence in doing that. It has also been proved that these kinds of creatures are intelligent. They have been put to the test in different countries and in different ways, and they have passed in the maximum ways. Name Something As Clever As a Bernedoodle We also know that human beings are the most intelligent creatures living in this world, and if they are given a pet like a Bernedoodle, which is also very clever, obviously not matching the level of intelligence with the human beings, they will bond very well because of having get similar features. And similar features are known to bring many animals closer to human beings in different ways, and the Bernedoodle is such an animal. Also, when you are naming a creature, people expect you to research it. So when you are giving a name that refers to something intelligent, you are referring to a feature of your pet. Thus, people will appreciate your effort and love the fact that you have considered the parts of your pet. Final Words Finally, as we end this article, we want to suggest one thing for your own good: to give yourself enough time, do not make any decision in a hurry because this is something you should be very careful about. This is one of the significant steps you need to take when you are adopting a creature that you will keep as a pet. We hope that this article helped you in the gaming process of your pet. If so, do not forget to share this article with your friends and family members.

Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Michigan? Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. A good breeder will be more than happy to answer all of your questions and will be more than willing to provide you with references. Be sure to ask lots of questions before choosing a breeder. A good breeder should be able to provide you with all kinds of information about the puppies, the parents, and themselves. If the breeder is unwilling to answer your questions or seems shady, it is best to walk away. Many unethical breeders will try to hide this information from you. These breeders are usually trying to sell their puppies as quickly as possible and do not have much concern for the well-being of the puppies or their new families. There are no perfect dogs, but there are a lot of great breeders out there who will work hard to provide you with a healthy and happy puppy. However, a reputable breeder should be more than happy to provide you with a health record for your puppy. This health record should have all of the information on the vaccines that were given and any medical treatments that have been performed. They will also be able to inform you about what genetic disorders are common with the breed so you can watch out for them. Be sure to have a safe place for the puppy to sleep. This can be a kennel or a crate, but it should be big enough for the puppy to stand up and turn around in. You will need to have a place for the puppy to eat and drink. This can be a bowl or an automatic feeder and waterer. You will need to have a place for the puppy to potty. This can be an outdoor potty area or a pee pad. You will to have some toys for the puppy to play with. You will need to have a vet lined up who can provide care for your new puppy. If you can provide your German Shepherd with all of these things, they will be happy and healthy. However, if you are unable to provide these things, it is best to find an alternative pet. This process can take some time, but it is definitely worth it in the end. The best way to potty train your puppy is to take them outside frequently. When they go potty outside, be sure to praise them and give them a treat. Another thing that you can do is to put newspaper or pee pads in an area where the puppy can go potty indoors. When they go potty on the newspaper or pee pad, be sure to praise them and give them a treat. It is important to stay consistent with both of these methods so that the puppy will learn where they are supposed to go potty. If you are consistent with potty training, your German Shepherd puppy will be potty trained in no time. However, if you do not stay consistent, the puppy will likely start to potty inside the house. The best way to train your German Shepherd is to start when they are young. One of the most important commands that you can teach your dog is how to sit. Once your dog has mastered sitting on command, you can move onto the next step. The next step is to teach your German Shepherd puppy how to stay. When you come back, give them praise and another treat. Once they understand the concept of staying, you can start teaching them how to come when called. This process will take some time because you cannot reward them with treats every single time that they come when called; otherwise, they may get sick of coming when called after while. Eventually, your German Shepherd will learn how to stay and come when called whenever they are given the command. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter.

We will also talk about some of the factors that can affect this number. The average litter size for Goldendoodles is three to eight puppies. However, this number can range from one to twelve puppies. Litters of ten or more are considered large, while litters of four or less are considered small. There are a few factors that can affect the litter size of Goldendoodles. Some of these include: Stressful Environment: One of the most common reasons for small litter size is stress. If the dam mother is in a high-stress environment during pregnancy, she is more likely to have a smaller litter. This is because the stress hormone cortisol can cause the dam to abort some of her fetuses. Younger dogs tend to have larger litters than older dogs. This is because their bodies are more capable of handling multiple pregnancies. If the dam is not in good health or if she is not getting enough nutrients, she is more likely to have a smaller litter. Additionally, if the dam has had previous litters that were small, she is more likely to have another small litter. This is because her body may not be able to produce enough milk for multiple puppies. Genetics: Genetics plays a huge role in litter size. Some breeds of dogs are more likely to have larger litters than others. For example, Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers tend to have larger litters than toy breeds. Additionally, some individual dogs may be predisposed to having smaller litters due to their genes. Inbreeding: Inbreeding can also impact litter size. If two closely related dogs are bred, they are more likely to have smaller litters. This is because inbreeding can lead to genetic defects that can impact fertility. Additionally, inbred dogs are more likely to have health problems that can make it difficult for them to produce large litters. How The Insemination Took Place: Another factor that can impact litter size is how the insemination took place. If artificial insemination was used, the number of puppies that are born may be smaller than if the dogs were allowed to mate naturally. This is because artificial insemination can cause damage to the eggs or sperm, which can reduce fertility. Additionally, if only one dog was used for artificial insemination, the litter size may be smaller than if two dogs were used. The age of the Goldendoodle can also impact litter size. This is because their bodies are not yet fully developed and they may not be able to produce as many eggs. Additionally, younger dogs are more likely to experience complications during pregnancy and delivery, which can lead to smaller litters. The average age for a Goldendoodle to have its first litter is between 24 months and three years old. However, some Goldendoodles may have their first litter as early as 18 months old, while others may not have their first litter until they are three years old. The average age for a Goldendoodle to have its last litter is between six and eight years old. However, some Goldendoodles may continue to have litters until they are ten years old or older. Beyond this, you can put your Goldendoodle at serious risk of health complications by continuing to breed them. At this age, the puppy will begin to eat solid food and will no longer need to drink milk. Weaning a puppy too early can cause health problems, so it is important to wait until the puppy is at least six weeks old before you begin weaning them. Conclusion: We would like to conclude by saying that the number of puppies a Goldendoodle can have depends on many factors. The health of the mother, the age of the puppy, and the weight of the mother all play a role in how many puppies a Goldendoodle can have. Always consult with your veterinarian to determine if your Goldendoodle is healthy enough to have another litter of puppies. By Dr. Merliza Cabriles, D. Breeding Goldendoodles is both a science and an art. It comes with important and crucial responsibilities. Responsible dog breeders always share an underlying purpose—to improve the breed. This is achieved by making sure that the parents have been tested for specific Goldendoodle health issues , including prenatal checks. Breeding Goldendoodles will entail devoting time to acquiring in-depth knowledge about the breed, including genetic testing and the standards established by the Goldendoodle Association of North America GANA. A responsible Goldendoodle breeder is dedicated to learning about Goldendoodle pregnancy, health, breeding, and raising puppies. Goldendoodle breeders also recognize the importance of attending breed-specific events and establish good relationships with reputable Goldendoodle breeders. How Long Are Goldendoodles Pregnant? The average gestation period of Goldendoodles is 63 days, although it could vary from 58 to 68 days. When calculating the number of days of pregnancy, you should bear in mind that conception is often hard to ascertain. This means the act of mating is not a reliable way to start measuring the gestation period. The gestation period refers to the time between when the fetus was conceived and birth. The gestation period of Goldendoodles may vary if the female has been bred several times or if the eggs are fertilized by the sperm a day or two after mating. It is calculated from the first day of ovulation and not during the day of mating. When Can Goldendoodles Get Pregnant? The minimum age for Goldendoodles to get pregnant is years of age. The maximum is 12 years old. The first heat cycle of female Goldendoodles takes place between 6 and 18 months of age. While they are able to get pregnant at this time, this is not the best time to start breeding your Goldendoodle. When Can Male Goldendoodles Breed? The minimum age that male Goldendoodles can breed is 2 years old. The maximum is 10 to 12 years of age. Once male Goldendoodles become sexually mature, they will be able to mate every day throughout their entire lifetime. The viability and vitality of the sperm can be affected by the aging process, illness, or exposure to toxins. What is the Best Age to Breed a Goldendoodle? Female Goldendoodles can get pregnant throughout their lives. A Goldendoodle can be bred every 6 to 8 months. However, experts recommend letting one heat cycle pass in between each litter to avoid over-breeding your Goldendoodle. The earliest sign of heat in Goldendoodles is swelling or engorgement of the vulva. However, there are female dogs in which the swelling is not as obvious. For some female dogs that are in heat, the vaginal discharge will become apparent several days after heat has begun. The amount of vaginal discharge during heat varies from dog to dog. As the cycle progresses, the color and appearance of the vaginal discharge change. The bloody discharge during the early part of the cycle eventually becomes thin, watery, and light red in color as days pass. How Long is a Goldendoodle in Heat? The estrus cycle of Goldendoodles can vary from weeks with an average of 3 weeks. Morning sickness such as nausea and vomiting is rare but may occur in some dogs around days 21 to 25 as a result of hormonal changes. Signs of pregnancy in Goldendoodles are typically exhibited during the second trimester or during the third week of pregnancy. Have a question for a vet? The dog may not have much of an appetite and her abdomen hardens like a bag of rocks. Nesting may continue and the dog may keep on rearranging the bedding in her whelping box before a puppy is born. What is the Average Whelping Time of a Goldendoodle? So, for a litter of 5, the whelping time normally takes about 5 hours total. What is the Average Goldendoodle Litter Size? There are also a large number of Facebook groups where you can connect with and learn from other breeders in your area and across the world. Read More…. Conclusion: How many puppies do Goldendoodles have? It is typical for a female Goldendoodle to birth puppies per litter, with up to two litters per year. They can do this for around years, as long as their health is adequate. Several different components influence the size of a Goldendoodles litter. These items can include genetics, health, age, size, and diet. One way to ensure a large litter is to feed your dog a healthy diet consisting of high-quality ingredients and adequate portions. This act will allow her to get all the necessary nutrients needed to sustain herself and her babies during conception and pregnancy. Doing so will also enable a quicker recovery, which will create more extraordinary conditions for future litters. You also want to ensure healthy birth practices with the appropriate veterinary care. Doing this twice a year for multiple years can also take a toll on their bodies, especially without proper care. Just like a human mother, having pregnancies too close together can cause health issues or increase the risk for problems down the road. Calculating Litter Size Two super small brown or chocolate Goldendoodles Being that a Goldendoodle is part Golden Retriever and part Poodle, there are variants when you look at the exact breed of Poodle. With Golden Retrievers, there are different sub-breeds, but they are all quite similar. Even outside of the size variations, their care and temperament also have other characteristics. Whereas a Toy Poodle has a small dog mentality, the Standard Poodle can be more friendly and inviting. And just how does this play into the litter size of a Goldendoodle? The type of Poodle that the Golden Retriever mates with will significantly affect the number of babies conceived. The Golden Retriever breed has eight puppies per litter on average. However, poodles vary based on type. Some Poodle breeds can produce up to five babies in a litter. Others may only birth one of two babies with each pregnancy. Therefore, the parenting genetic combination and the lineage between the two come into play to dictate the litter amount. When you combine this with the many other factors that influence litter sizes health, age, diet, genetics, height , it is truly a guessing game until the birth occurs. The more pregnancies that occur will bring larger litter sizes as long as the dog is in good health and receives appropriate veterinary care. Therefore, do not be disappointed if the first Goldendoodle litter results in a small number of puppies. Future births will likely turn out more babies. When Breeding Can Start Those who make a living out of breeding animals often want to get started as soon as possible. It is worth knowing that Goldendoodles tend to go into heat at around six months of age. This is true for a smaller Toy Goldendoodle and Mini Goldendoodle as well. Going into heat means that their bodies are capable of reproducing, similar to women who start puberty. However, it would be best if you always waited until at least the second heat cycle before attempting to breed. The reasoning is because despite being able to conceive and birth them, the dog is not at an appropriate maturity due to their young age. Without proper care from their mother, the puppies could suffer from poor health or even die. As you learn about animals and the life processes they go through, it is easy to see the connections between animals and humans. Humans are capable of producing at a young age, similar to animals. However, we are discouraged from doing so due to the mental and emotional levels needed to parent a dependent being adequately. This instance is just one situation where there is overlap between species, and it points out how similar things in life can indeed be. This need pertains to both the mother and the father. If you again compare this situation to humans, it is similar to how fertility is higher in younger couples. Our eggs and sperm are of higher quality and mobility in our youth. Therefore, we often find it more simplistic to conceive in our earlier years. This case is the same for dogs. As they age, the quality of their reproductive components goes down, making it more difficult to conceive. In their earlier years, the process of conceiving is much easier. This is true of the female dog and male dog. On the flip side and in similarity to humans, as dogs age, they are likely to give birth to larger litters. This likelihood is based on whether the dog has previously given birth or not. If they have and conceive again in later years, it is of the high probability that they will have a large hybrid dog litter. Correspondingly, if a human gets pregnant later in life, the chances of conceiving multiples go up. There is a higher likelihood of a woman naturally conceiving more than one baby at a time over the age of .For Goldendoodle dogs, this age is five. Issues That Negatively Affect Litter Size There are a lot of factors that go into a successful birth and the size of a litter. There are also several things to stay away from if you want to achieve the best-case scenario. Having a calm and serene environment lays the best foundation for pregnancy, even in canines. Although the idea makes sense, conception is more likely if it is done naturally. In this way, it is more conducive to the actions of the body and the natural process that happens when in heat. As a dog owner this is unacceptable, and not the actions of a reputable breeder. Genetics: We have talked about how breed genetics can influence litter size. However, it does need to be understood that just because the parents of a dog conceived quickly or birthed large litters does not mean that the children of those dogs will have the same fate. As we know, genetic can often skip generations or not show back up at all. These anomalies can happen within dogs as well. Poodles typically have puppies per litter but this can vary. Inbreeding: There is a certain percentage of genetic similarities that are acceptable to breed between. Some people whoa re trying to create the perfect doodle puppy designer dog cut corners and make mistakes. Inbreeding is dangerous because of the medical issues it can cause in dogs that are a product of the situation. In the search for a F1b Goldendoodle or multigen Goldendoodle mny breeders cut corners and run out of unrelated dog. This is unacceptable. A reputable breeder cuts NO corners. Inbreeding can also cause problems for future litters, inbred or not. The reason is because of the abnormalities that trickle down like predispotion to hip dysplasia or poorly formed body parts. Because of this, smaller Goldendoodles litter size can become more prevalent. With Goldendoodles being a highly desired breed with high demand, it is vital to remember the key concepts above. Successful breeding and large litter sizes result from careful practices. Conclusion: Dog breeding is a complex subject, affected by many different elements. It is important to remember that you can only control so much and that having healthy dogs to give to new families is the desired result. Breeding dogs, especially popular breed types, is a form of income for many people. Because of this, larger litter sizes equals higher profits. However, it is essential to remember that dogs are not machines. They are members of the family. Their health and safety are a priority, just like yours. Accounting for their wellbeing will benefit you more in the long run, so it is essential to focus on that. How big a Goldendoodle litter size is depends on a variety of factors, most of them having to do with genetics. What is a Goldendoodle? A Goldendoodle is the cute child of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. Since Golden Retrievers and Poodles are among the most popular dog breeds in the world, it is easy to see how Goldennoodles have become so popular in such a short time. The first known example of a Doodle is the Cockapoo, which first appeared in the s, the result of the happy union between Poodles and Cocker Spaniels. Goldendoodles only appeared in the s and at the moment they seem set to become the number one Doodle dogs. How many different types of Goldendoodle are there? Basically, there are two types of Goldendoodle, and this depends on the size of the Poodle in the mix. If a Golden Retriever mates with a standard Poodle inches tall , their offspring will be a Standard Goldendoodle. However with a miniature Poodle 13 to 15 inches tall or a toy Poodle less than 10 inches tall , the result is a Mini Goldendoodle. On average, Goldendoodles are 20 — 24 inches tall at the shoulder and weigh between 50 and 90 lbs. What is the average Goldendoodle litter size? To understand this we must first talk about how the size of a dog affects its litter size. Large dogs tend to have larger litters simply because their body is big enough to carry more puppies at a time. This explains why Chihuahua and Pomeranian females have puppies on average, while a big Bullmastiff averages 5 — 13 puppies per litter. For Golden Retrievers the average litter size is 8 puppies. Since this is the average number, you can expect a Golden Retriever to give birth to as little as four puppies or an impressive 12 puppies at a time. With Poodles, the average litter size depends on the type of Poodle. Standard Poodles have six puppies on average, miniature Poodles have five, while a toy Poodle might have 1 — 3 puppies per litter. Mini Goldendoodles can produce 3 — 8 puppies per litter, which takes us to an average of five. Standard Goldendoodles can have more than five puppies per size, but you must understand this is not an exact science and there are other factors that come into play. While older females tend to produce larger litters, the same cannot be said about the father. An older dog might be affected by sper mobility issues so the litter that comes from such a union might be small. In general, a female dog is fertile the first time she goes into heat, which happens between 6 — 12 months of age. For Golden Retriever it is recommended that they mate for the first time around the age of two, which corresponds to the third heat cycle. The same goes for Poodles of any type. A female that does not mate until the age of five will generally have small litters for the rest of her life. In some cases, it is recommended to mate a female twice in a row and then give her a break for a cycle or two to allow her to regain her strength. These are general recommendations that apply to all dog breeds, including Goldendoodles. A female dog can have puppies throughout her life, but it is not recommended. As far as Golden Retrievers or Poodles are concerned, a female should only be mated until the age of 8 at the most. After the age of , a pregnancy can have complications, putting the life of the mother in danger. What is the difference between first generation and second generation Goldendoodles? To put it simply F1 means first generation Goldendoodle. F2 means second generation Goldendoodle. The main difference between F1 and F2 is that first generation Goldendoodles benefit from the so-called Hybrid Vigor. On the other hand, with F1 Goldendoodles it is more difficult to predict what traits they will inherit from their parents, in terms of appearance or personality. An F1 might have a smooth coat like a Golden Retriever or a curly one, typical of Poodles. Some still shed quite a lot, like their Retriever parent, while others are hypoallergenic and barely shed at all. F2 Goldendoodles are more predictable and they tend to shed less than first generation dogs. At what age should a Goldendoodle puppy be weaned? If you have a litter of brand new Goldendoodles you might be wondering when they are going to grow up a bit and be less dependent on their mother. By 6 weeks a puppy should be completely weaned. At what age will a Goldendoodle puppy be ready to go to their new home? True, in terms of feeding needs puppies are ready to move on at around 6 weeks of age, but they should not be separated from their mother and their siblings quite so early. What you need to keep in mind is that this period is crucial in terms of socializing and a dog starts doing this with his siblings. It is also a period when a puppy learns about getting and sending signals to other dogs, and this is very important for their future training as well as for their ability to interact with other dogs later in life. Typically, these dogs are bred to take the best traits from their parents. Even inside the same litter, puppies can vary widely. Other Similar Posts. As Poodles can be miniature, medium, or standard-sized, they can bring forth puppies of varying heights and weights. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have? Now you understand a few facts about the Goldendoodle generations and backgrounds. Next, we will answer this: how many puppies do Goldendoodles have? On average, a Goldendoodle female gives birth to three to eight puppies. This number is an estimate because several factors affect the litter size. The dog generations matter when estimating the litter size. Arriving at an accurate answer requires first answering these two questions. First, how many puppies do Golden retrievers usually have? Golden retrievers produce eight puppies on average. The next question to consider asking yourself is this: how many puppies do Poodles have? Poodle dogs tend to have more babies as their size increases. Hence, a toy Poodle produces three puppies, while a miniature one produces five. But what number of puppies do standard Poodles have? Standard Poodles are the biggest dogs in the lot. They produce about seven puppies in one litter. A Goldendoodle dog should produce a range of three to eight puppies. Litters can be bigger than eight or smaller than three. Nobody can accurately answer this, how many puppies do Goldendoodles have? It is a matter of chance. When your dog gives birth, you can tell if your estimations are correct. What can increase or reduce the litter size? Goldendoodles are some of the loveliest Doodles. No person can mind having many puppies in a litter. Sadly, you might expect many puppies only to get three or fewer. A secret to having a larger litter size lies in the degree of care you offer the female dog. Although you cannot control some biological factors affecting fertility, you should play your part. Goldendoodle size Generally, the litter size depends on the Goldendoodle size. A poodle is the determinant of size. Earlier, we noted that Poodles have more babies as their sizes increase. Thus, larger Goldendoodles come from mating a standard-sized Poodle and a Golden Retriever. These hybrid dogs will produce more puppies than miniature and medium Goldendoodles. Here is the breakdown: How many puppies does a standard Goldendoodle have? How many dogs does a medium Goldendoodle produce? How many puppies does a mini Goldendoodle have? Goldendoodle generations We already told you how generations could affect the number of puppies a mother can have. The offspring can be big or small depending on the percentage of parent genes in a Goldendoodle. Where the gene ratio is , you might have fewer or many puppies. If a dog inherits more dominant fertility genes from its Golden Retriever parent, it might have a big litter. In most cases, though, puppies have more Poodle genes. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have based on this notion? If Poodle genes are dominant, the litter size will be three to eight puppies. We must also consider this: What number of puppies does a standard Poodle have? Standard Poodles have seven puppies on average. You will be at an advantage if mating Goldendoodles that came from a Standard Poodle parent. The odds are high that the litter will be big. Food A female Goldendoodle needs to eat enough calories each day. It also needs to eat a balanced diet to get fertile many times. Likewise, pregnant dogs require a healthy diet to deliver puppies with higher odds of survival. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have when eating a proper diet? First, a young female dog should always eat a healthy meal to better its chances of going into heat. Provide the best dog food for Goldendoodle during pregnancy time to get healthy puppies. Secondly, the dog should eat a more nutritious minerals and vitamin diet when pregnant and after giving birth. If you follow these easy rules, your Goldendoodle might sire more puppies. Unhealthy mothers deliver smaller litters and weak puppies that may not make it to adulthood. Current health status How many puppies do Goldendoodles have if their health status is good? Healthy Goldendoodles produce more puppies than unhealthy ones. For instance, your Goldendoodle boasts a lot of mental and physical energy. It needs proper physical and mental stimulation to get fit and feel happy. A Goldendoodle requires sixty minutes of exercise daily and some quiet time. Another determinant of good health is the number of medical checkups you offer your dog. Before mating your Goldendoodle, call a professional veterinarian for a thorough medical checkup. After breeding your pet successfully, keep taking it for pregnancy testing and evaluations. A veterinarian can guide you on how to care for a pregnant Goldendoodle pet. The pet does not need regular prenatal checkups like humans. Take the pet to a vet in the beginning and toward the end of a pregnancy. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have at birth? A health checkup done two to three weeks before birth ensures that the mother can deliver all puppies safely. If the mother and litter are healthy, wait for the birth date to deliver the puppies at home. As with humans, puppy deliveries are not always safe. As anything can happen, visit your veterinarian if an emergency crops up. Whether the dog delivers at home or not, it requires a thorough medical checkup about forty-eight hours after. The vet will verify if the mother and puppies are doing fine. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have if the pregnancy ends well? The dog might not have stillbirths, which means all the puppies in the womb will come out. A younger woman has optimal fertility levels, unlike an older woman. Also, an older woman than thirty-five years has higher odds of carrying twins, triplets, or other multiple pregnancies. Hence, how many puppies do Goldendoodles have based on age? Younger Goldendoodles with smaller body sizes reach maturity earlier than their larger counterparts. Also, older Goldendoodles can have more puppies than younger mothers. Nonetheless, an older dog should be super healthy to avoid having weak puppies in one litter. Younger dogs produce fewer but stronger puppies and can come on heat faster than older dogs. Breeding conditions The environment in which you breed your dog can determine the litter size it would produce. If the female dog has stress, it will deliver fewer puppies. It might also deliver weak puppies with limited chances of reaching adulthood. How many puppies do Goldendoodles have in favorable breeding conditions? Your dog can have a bigger litter if it has no stress. Human mothers respond poorly to stress during pregnancy. Some suffer from miscarriages, hypertension, and more. Dog mothers are similar in that they can lose a pregnancy due to stress. To help your Goldendoodle get pregnant and not suffer a miscarriage, provide a nurturing environment. Inbreeding The choice of dogs to mate with is crucial when answering this part: how many puppies do Goldendoodles have? If you keep mating the same related dogs, the chances of having smaller litters are high. Inbreeding leads to genetic defects in dogs and other animals. Additionally, the resulting offspring might inherit health issues from the family lineage. The more health problems the dogs have, the lower their survival chances. Even surviving puppies might later pass bad genes to their offspring. The solution to inbreeding is finding a male from another dog family. Artificial insemination can lead to higher or lower-quality puppies. It may also decrease the litter size. Dogs sire more puppies when they mate naturally. Besides, the professional conducting artificial insemination should use more than one dog to increase the litter size. When should you allow your dog to mate for the first time? A mating cycle can affect the puppies numbers. As we mentioned, a female can reach its first mating cycle at six months. Do not give your female to a male dog at this age. Its body is too young and might not have adequate eggs. Besides, a young dog can develop pregnancy complications and deliver in an emergency. These factors can lower their odds of having many puppies. It is better to have your Goldendoodle reproduce at twenty-four months or after. After the eighth to the tenth year, it is safer to forbid your Goldendoodle to have other litters. It can develop risky health issues and die before its fifteenth year. A Goldendoodle should get pregnant in its second or third cycle. Their gestation period is sixty-one to sixty-four days. As we earlier said, the type of Poodle used to breed your Goldendoodle can affect its future offspring. If the Poodle is of medium size, chances are that the mother would produce five to six puppies. Again, if the mother has stronger reproduction genes from its Golden Retriever parent, her chances of reaching six puppies go up. A Goldendoodle dog will deliver three to eight puppies in their first litter. The more Poodle genes the dogs have, the higher the odds of having a smaller litter. But when considering standard Poodles, the litter gets bigger. Three or eight puppies are not standard figures but estimates. Ever asked this: how many puppies do Labradoodles have? Labradoodles have twelve puppies per litter. They produce a larger litter than Goldendoodles. Miniature Goldendoodles can have three to 4 puppies per litter. They produce the least number of puppies on average. What is the Best Age to Breed a Goldendoodle? The correct age to mate your Goldendoodle dog is 24 months. Six to twelve months is usually the first cycle in most dogs. It is not the best age because the pet is too young to nurture puppies. The second or third cycle is the best time. Related Posts. By Jennifer Nelson When you are looking to get a Goldendoodle, it is likely that you will have a lot of questions about the dog and how they will do within your family. And if you decide to take it to the next level and breed the Goldendoodle yourself, you need to learn as much about this type of dog as possible to be prepared. One of the first questions that you can have in either of these situations is what is the average litter size of a Goldendoodle. What is the Average Litter Size of a Goldendoodle? Goldendoodles usually have between puppies in a litter. Poodles average 6 puppies per litter and Golden Retrievers average 8 per litter, so Standard Goldendoodles usually have bigger litters while minis and smaller have progressively smaller litters. Keep in mind that larger dogs will often have a larger litter because they have the right body size in order to carry more of the puppies at the time. This is why small dogs like the Pomeranian are just going to have an average of 1 to 3 puppies while a big Bullmastiff will be able to have up to 13 puppies. For the Goldendoodle and other crossbreeds , we are going to need to look more at the averages for the parents rather than for the dog. And the exact amount can vary depending on if you are working with a standard Goldendoodle or a mini Goldendoodle. When we take a look at the Golden Retriever, the average litter size for this dog is 8 puppies. Since this is the average, you will find that each litter is going to be a little bit different when it comes to the Golden Retriever. Some will give birth to as few as four puppies while others may give birth to up to 12 puppies in one litter. Then we can take a look at the Poodle parent as well. The Poodle will have different types of litter sizes based on the type of Poodle that you work with. The Standard Poodle is going to have an average of six puppies. Then the miniature Poodle will have five and the toy Poodle will have between one to three puppies for each litter. Mini Goldendoodles are going to be somewhere in between all of this and the exact amount will depend on the size of the Goldendoodle that you are trying to breed. For example, if you are working with the mini Goldendoodle, they will be able to produce between three to eight puppies in each litter, giving us an average of five puppies. Then there are standard Goldendoodles, which are going to be able to have more puppies per litter, many averaging between 6 to 8 in each litter. Keep in mind that this is not an exact science and there are a number of factors that can happen to determine how many puppies will be born in a litter. For example, the first litter for a female is often going to be smaller in size compared to the following litters. While the older females are often going to produce larger litters, the opposite is going to be said with the father. An older dog might be affected by sperm mobility issues so the dogs will be smaller in the process too. Whether you are just starting out with the Goldendoodle and using the Poodle and Golden Retriever to get this done, or you would like to breed your Goldendoodle, you do not want to start the puppies on their first litter too early. To start, the female dog in the grouping is going to be ready to have babies when she first goes into heat. This will happen sometime between 6 to 12 months of age. Most experts agree that you should not breed them right away. The dog is not prepared to be a parent yet and this can be hard on their body. It is best to do it after the second or third fertile cycle at the earliest before you allow the dog time to mate. This will allow their body to become fully grown and makes it more likely that the dog will be able to handle the pregnancy. For the Golden Retriever parent, it is best that they wait until they reach the age of two before they are used for breeding. This will usually happen around the third heat cycle. This is a pretty common rule for all types of Poodles as well. If you wait until the female is five years old or older, they will generally have smaller litters than doing it before this time. Breeding between the ages of 2 and 5 is often best. While it is technically possible for the female to have puppies each time they go into heat, this is not a good idea. You should not force the dogs to go through one pregnancy after another because this can have some negative health effects for the dog. At most, you can mate the female twice in a row and then give them a few cycles to recover and regain their strength and to prevent issues along the way. If you are ever uncertain about whether it is a good idea to start breeding the dog, it may be a good idea to discuss this with the vet ahead of time to keep your dog healthy. The first step to helping breed your Goldendoodle is making sure that you do not start this process too early for your dog. Once you have decided when to start, it is time to figure out when you should stop breeding the dog. Technically, the female dog in the couple is able to breed and have puppies throughout their whole life. However, this is not something that is recommended. While each dog is going to be a little different, when it comes to the Poodle and the Golden Retriever, it is best to not mate the dog much past the age of 8 at most. The health of your dog should be an important factor to consider if you are worried about when to stop breeding. However, most dog clubs try to provide an incentive to stop you from breeding a dog that is too old. For example, most of the common dog clubs that you can choose from will not register a dog if their mother is older than 8 when they are born. This is done to help discourage continuous breeding up until the time the mother dies. In most dogs, once they reach the age of seven to eight, the pregnancy is going to have more complications. This is going to put the life of the mother in danger and is not that healthy for the dog or their puppies at all. Being careful with breeding when the dog starts to get older is not a good option. If you start to notice that the pregnancy is not going well for your dog or they seem to have a number of other health issues that may affect how well they are able to have puppies, then it is time to stop. The health of the mother always needs to be a top priority to make sure that they do not get sick. Taking care of the mother is a top way to keep the puppies in that litter a little safer as well. A common question about standard Goldendoodle ownership is how many puppies can Goldendoodles have? A female Goldendoodle can have between 3 to 8 puppies per litter and as many as two litters in one year. As long as their mental and physical health is good, they can usually do this. This means that all puppies are born simultaneously or on the same bed. A litter is a group of puppies born at once. Is Dog size and breed effective? Because the Goldendoodle is a part Golden Retriever and a Poodle, there are a variety of variations when looking at the kind of Poodle. In addition to the differences in size, their temperament and care are also different. While a Miniature Poodle is a small dog, a Standard Poodle can be warm and welcoming. What factors influence the litter size for Goldendoodles? Genetics is the first. Some Goldendoodles reproduce at high rates, while others have very low rates. This is due to their genetic structure. A Golden Retriever has an average litter of eight puppies. For Poodles, however, it is more complicated. Their size is the most important thing. One to three puppies can be born to a toy Poodle. The bigger the dog, the larger its litter size will be. If your Goldendoodle is tiny, you should expect fewer puppies per litter. For a standard Goldendoodle, the average of 5 puppies per litter is reasonable. Also, the first litter of a female canine is usually the smallest. It will go up for the next litter. A female Goldendoodle can have two litters per year. Their fertility can last up to 8 years. It is most recommended for a female dog to mate before two years old. Five months is the average time for a litter of puppies to be born. What is the best time to start breeding? It is best to wait for the second cycle of fertility to pass, then start breeding. Knowing the average size of a Goldendoodle litter will help you make informed decisions about breeding programs that will work for your dogs. What problems Impact the size of litter? Numerous elements affect the success of birth and the number of babies. There are a few factors to avoid to have the ideal scenario. Stressful environment: Dogs can feel stress. This could impact the fertility of your dog. As a dog owner, this is unacceptable and is not the behavior of a respected breeder. Genetics: Genetics of breeds can affect the size of litters. As we all know, genetics can often skip a Goldendoodle generation or not appear again. Inbreeding: It is dangerous because of the medical issues it can cause in dogs that are a product of the situation. Many breeders cut corners and run out of unrelated dogs searching for an F1b Goldendoodle or multigene Goldendoodle. This is unacceptable. A reputable breeder cuts NO corners. Goldendoodles fall into this category due to their natural tendencies toward hyperactivity and intelligence. They are perfect family pets as they are highly affectionate, energetic, hypoallergenic, and loyal. While they are young bred, they are gaining increasing popularity. This makes them suitable dogs for breeding. This is a subject close to my heart as a breeder of Doodles and a former breeder of Labrador Retrievers. The gestation period is counted from the first day of ovulation rather than the first day of mating as these two dates can differ somewhat. While it used to be believed that a bitch would only mate on the days she was ovulating we now know, thanks to the help of the tools available to us today, that this is not always the case. This means that they ovulate earlier during their heat period than some other breeds and also give birth slightly earlier. Most breeds usually ovulate and are ready to be mated from approximately the fourteenth day of being in heat the first day of the heat period is counted as the first day you see bleeding but I have found with my Goldendoodle girls that they ovulate as early as day .With that in mind, in the early days of my breeding career, before progesterone testing was readily available, if I had used the fourteen-day rule of thumb I may actually have missed my girls ovulating. This means that mating slightly too late does not necessarily mean she will not become pregnant but that she may have a smaller than optimum sized litter. For this reason, we do not allow our bitches to be mated only once — it is important to repeat the mating again 48 hours later meaning a minimum of two matings. If you are taking your girl out to stud, rather than using your own in-house stud, it is particularly important to know when she is ovulating to avoid a wasted journey or wasted mating. Some bitches will stand to be mated slightly before and after ovulating, so allowing the dog to mate her is not indicative of ovulation on its own. I have found this to be especially true of my Goldendoodle girls who always seem keen to mate early in their heat periods. In addition to ovulating early in their cycle, I have also found that my girls give birth earlier than other breeds, generally giving birth on day 61 of their pregnancy rather than day 63 or 64 when my bitches of other breeds delivered their litters. I have found this to be true not only of my own Goldendoodle bitches but also of the bitches that have been brought in to be mated by my stud dogs. There are several ways we can confirm pregnancy in our Goldendoodle bitch starting from day 21 after ovulation. Many breeders also report a clear mucous discharge from the vulva at around this time. From day 28 you can have an ultrasound examination to confirm pregnancy however this is not a reliable way to ascertain litter size and bitches can also reabsorb fetuses even after this point. From roughly the fifth week after mating, however, you should be able to tell just by looking that your girl is indeed pregnant. I always notice that her rib cage looks wider when viewed from above at this stage. You will often find that her appetite increases around this time too. During the last two weeks of gestation, your vet can carry out an x-ray to check the number of pups that your bitch is expecting. This is more accurate at this point as calcification will have occurred and a good radiographer and often an experienced breeder can count the number of skulls and spines seen. Before even considering breeding from your Goldendoodle bitch there are a number of checks that should be carried out. No vet is needed for genetic testing as this is done via cheek swabs which are sent away to a laboratory; however, this takes several weeks. Assuming all these checks are OK before actually mating you must ensure that your girl is up to date with vaccinations, worming, and flea treatment and have her checked over by a vet to confirm that she is in perfect health and fit for breeding. Once she is actually pregnant apart from the confirmation of pregnancy, she should need no further pre-natal checks. Average Litter Size of a Goldendoodle Like most large breeds, Goldendoodles do tend to have large litters. The average litter size is 8 to 11 puppies. In my own personal experience, this has proved to be true with my smallest litter being ten pups and my largest thirteen. Goldendoodles are generally great mums and my girls have raised their litters beautifully and I have not had to assist with feeding, even with my largest litter. Can There Be Any Outside Impacts on Gestation Period Generally, if a bitch is having a smaller litter of four or fewer pups, she is more likely to give birth later than expected compared with a bitch having a larger litter. However, usually not by more than a day or two. Pups born seven days or more before their due date have a very low chance of survival, but this is thankfully a rare occurrence. If a bitch experiences trauma or contracts an infection during her pregnancy this can also cause early onset of labor or even abortion, so it is important to protect the pregnancy by ensuring the bitch is in optimum health and kept in suitably clean conditions. It is wise to avoid any unnecessary veterinary drugs or exposure to chemicals during her pregnancy. Your bitch will need to be wormed during pregnancy but make sure to use products specifically for use during pregnancy to avoid damage to the unborn pups. What is the Average Whelping Time? However, I have found that for a normal-sized litter 8 to 11 pups it usually takes on average around 8 — 10 hours for all pups to be born. Usually, once pushing starts the first few pups are born in relatively quick succession, but this slows down somewhat towards the end of delivery. This is caused by several things. There is no need to panic so long as the bitch is not distressed or actively pushing for over an hour without delivering a pup. The normal temperature is to .Once you observe this temperature drop it is vital to stay by her side. As labor progresses the bitch will pant and become restless often becoming stressed if you leave her even to pop to the toilet. She will start to dig, especially out in the yard so make sure you accompany her on toilet breaks. She may also have diarrhea or vomit. This is the time to encourage her to move to her whelping box. Tips on Caring for Your Goldendoodle During the Gestation Period During the gestation period, it is important that your Goldendoodle is kept in the very best of health. Make sure she has plenty of high-quality food, puppy food, or a complete raw diet are best and let her eat as much as she likes. Exercise is also important as a fit bitch will have an easier delivery. My own girls usually continue their daily walks right up until the day before delivery. Start worming the bitch on day 40 of her pregnancy with a pregnancy-safe product at the correct dose for her weight and continue this until two days post whelp.

It has had more staying power than many other designer dogs that emerged at this time because it is an especially great breed for families looking for a dog to protect their property but still has the affectionate streak of a family pet. Labrador retrievers are medium-to-large gun dogs that were bred in the United Kingdom from stock brought over from Canada specifically to retrieve game, even in wet conditions. This means they were bred to love the water and have a soft mouth for retrieving. They are also very intelligent dogs that enjoy working and are eager to please and therefore easy to train. These characteristics have made them popular working dogs in assistance and service roles as well as popular family pets. However, they do require consistent grooming and shed heavily. Meanwhile, Doberman Pinschers are even bigger dogs at around three to four inches taller than Labs. They were developed by a tax collector in Germany in the late 19th century. He wanted an intelligent and strong dog that could protect him while working that looked impressive enough to put off most would-be thieves based on appearance alone. Dobermans are brave and fearless when it comes to protecting their people. Nevertheless, they are commonly seen as police dogs, personal protection dogs, and guard dogs. To account for the size difference between the different parent breeds, the mother will always be the Doberman. Female Dobermans measure 25 to 27 inches in height and weigh 71 to 77 pounds. The males are quite a bit bigger, measuring up to 28 inches and weighing up to pounds. Male Labs measure 22 to .This basically means you can expect your Doberman Lab mix to be 24 to 28 inches tall and weigh around 60 to pounds, with the males being quite a bit larger than the females. It is less predictable whether they will have the stockier but athletic body of a Labrador or the thinner and stronger body of a Doberman. Overall, they tend to have a heavier look than your average Doberman. Additionally, they could also have either the pointed ears and snout of a Doberman or the slightly flatter face of a Lab with floppy ears. But it is not an exact science, so some Labramans can end up having more high-shedding coats. The thinner coat also means they are less tolerant of the water and the cold than a Labrador. Doberman Labradors can have varying coat colors as well. They can be black, chocolate, tan, or fawn in color, and they can have a solid coat like a Lab or markings like a Doberman. Doberman Lab Mix Temperament Both Labrador retrievers and Dobermans are intelligent dogs, so you can expect the same from their offspring. But while Labs are eager to please and therefore highly trainable, Dobermans are more independent and therefore more difficult to orient. Nevertheless, they have proved themselves capable of completing the complex training required to become police dogs, and their independent thinking is helpful in unknown situations. Most Labrador Doberman mixes will be very intelligent and even more trainable than your average Doberman, but you can expect a little bit of stubbornness, especially when food is involved. Labs are very friendly dogs that like to make friends with everything they meet! This makes them great family pets, since they enjoy the company of children and other animals, but terrible guard dogs. Dobermans are loyal and bond quickly with their people, including children, and can get on well with other animals if properly socialized. However, they are much more wary of strangers. They are also very protective and will jump into action when they perceive a threat. This will be barking and growling while placing themselves between their people and danger rather than biting. With a Doberman Lab mix, you should expect something between the two. They are typically loving dogs that will get along great with your family but also raise the alarm when it comes to strangers. They should be easy to control with a firm command if they have been properly trained, but you can expect them to be quite noisy dogs. It is this balance that makes the Dobrador a great balance between a family pet and guard dog. Always use positive reinforcement rather than punishment to train your Doberman Lab mix. It is more effective, and punishment can unintentionally trigger aggression. Doberman Lab Mix Energy Levels Both Labrador retrievers and Dobermans are high-energy dogs that need lots of exercise and mental stimulation. Labrador Doberman mixes need at least an hour of exercise a day, preferably split over two or three different sessions. They will want to flop their huge frame down on the couch with you for a snuggle and always like to know what is going on in the house. Nevertheless, they do need an outdoor space, as they will want to be moving around for a lot of the day. Their large size means this can be uncomfortable indoors, so a backyard is a must. A larger property they can wander and defend will make them very happy. Even if you leave them in the yard, they can develop anxiety if they are left alone for eight hours or so a day when everyone is out at school or work. They really need a family that has time to spend time with them. Watch their diet carefully, as both of their parent breeds tend to love food. It is easy for them to overindulge and put on weight. We tend to want to show our dogs love through food, but this can do more harm than good. Remember, every treat contains calories, too! A calorie-controlled diet that is high in animal-based proteins and healthy fats is ideal for high-energy dogs like a Doberman Lab mix. They have more diverse genes than their parent breeds, which means they may be less prone to some of the illnesses that affect them. However, their large size means elbow and hip dysplasia can be a major problem. When the joints are misaligned, their movement becomes strained, resulting in a lot of pain. While this is genetic, one major aggravating factor for this condition is too much exercise while growing. Until they are fully grown, which can take 18 months to two years, they should only get about five minutes of exercise per day per month of age. So, at four months they need 20 minutes, at six months they need 30 minutes, and they should only be getting close to an hour a day once they are a year old. Wobbler syndrome has also proven relatively common in this mixed breed. This is a neurological disease that affects the spine and neck of larger dogs. If they develop the condition, you will notice it because their legs will become wobbly when walking. In about five percent of cases, this can progress to full paralysis. Early and consistent vet check-ups can help prevent and monitor conditions like Wobbler syndrome. Labrador puppies are already quite popular, and many breeders work with them. Dobermans are harder to get your hands on, and you might pay almost twice that for a puppy from a reputable breeder. Additionally, you may get lucky and find a Doberman Lab mix at a rescue or up for adoption. They grow to be a lot bigger than people expect and need a lot of space, which are the main reasons that they end up in rescues. The fact that they naturally bark quite a lot can also lead to them needing to find a new home. Doberman Lab mixes can be great dogs if you want a friendly-family pet that can also act as a guard dog. How big is a Lab Doberman mix? Doberman Lab mix dogs are fairly large. They can measure anywhere from 24 to 28 inches and weigh 60 to pounds. The males tend to be significantly larger than the females. When apartments restrict specific dogs, it usually comes down to size and perceived aggression. Dobermans are big dogs with a reputation for being aggressive and working as police dogs. If Dobermans are not allowed in your apartment, a Doberman Lab mix will probably also be restricted. Labrador Doberman mix dogs make great pets. They can be loving family dogs that also protect your family and property. But the main thing to remember is they are big dogs with lots of energy, so not everyone is capable of looking after them. You need the space, time, and energy yourself to exercise and train them. However, if you have a fairly large property that needs a guard dog, and you want a pet to join you on physical adventures, then the Doberman Lab mix may be the perfect dog for you. Doberman and Labrador Histories The Doberman Lab mix has a rich working history, specializing in two very different jobs. The Labrador Retriever breed was first developed in Newfoundland, Canada. Where smaller water-fowl hunting dogs were mated with Newfoundlands to make the ultimate retrieving companion. Modern Labs are prized working dogs, service companions, therapy animals and of course family pets. The Doberman Pinscher was first bred in Germany during the late s as a protection dog. To develop this type of dog, short-haired Shepherd-type dogs were bred with Rottweilers, black and tan terriers, and German Pinschers. Even military work! What Do They Look Like? Your Doberman Lab mix dog will be tall, lean and leggy. They have naturally floppy ears and long slim muzzles. As their name suggests, chocolate Lab-Doberman puppies could come out chocolate brown, like their chocolate Lab parent, or they could come out looking more like a Doberman. Generally, Doberdors are solid colored like the Lab, but they may be bicolored like the Doberman. A dense double coat will require weekly brushing. Doberman Pinschers have long been viewed as dangerous dogs. Some Dobermans may have a more severe temperament than others. Additionally, Dobermans do not take well to being caged for long periods of time. They do not do well with isolation at all. Labradors also have a tendency to get bored and destructive if left alone for lengthy periods. These breeds are not advised if you work away from home during the day. If you plan to get a Doberdor, you might like to have two of them. Or maybe another pet that you know your Doberman Lab mix gets along with. All of these precautions should help reduce their need to guard their property or family from people or other pets. As the Doberman Lab tends to be a good-sized dog, some people may find one that likes to jump a bit intimidating. Or once he spies something that resembles a bird or squirrel! A great recall is essential. Until you have this a Doberman Lab mix would greatly benefit from a fenced-in yard. This way they can play, be trained and exercise risk free. Doberman and Labrador Health A few common canine ailments that are common across breeds. These include hip dysplasia, eye diseases, allergies, and skin irritations. However, hybrids like Doberman Labrador mixes may inherit the health conditions that are common in their parent breeds. Doberman Lab mix dogs have the potential to inherit health conditions from either parent. Both the Doberman and Labrador mother or father should have great hip scores and be tested clear for Progressive Retinol Athrophy. You absolutely will need an exercise plan for one of these active and playful fur babies. Exercise is especially important if your Doberman Lab takes after his Lab parent in the weight category, as he may easily gain too much weight without adequate exercise. Your pup will be even happier if he gets to stretch his legs at the dog park every so often! Lifespan Hybrid dogs generally have the same life expectancy as their parent breeds. So, the Doberman Lab mix has an estimated life expectancy of 10 to 12 years. Doberman Lab Mix Puppies Your Doberman Lab mix puppy should come from a breeder who prioritises health and temperament. You should be confident that they know you can handle a dog of either temperament, and ask you lots of questions about what you plan to do in terms of training and exercising your new puppy. The best Doberman Lab mix breeders are open, honest and have ensured both parent dogs were fully health tested. Should I get a Doberman Lab mix? As with any dog, mixed or not, you must also be prepared to deal with any ailments that come with the breed or breeds, especially hip dysplasia and loss of eyesight, in this case. There are a host of other inherited conditions that a Doberman Lab mix may develop, so we also recommend genetic testing of breeding stock before you purchase a puppy. Both of these personality types can be handled with proper training. Trainable Protective The temperament of the Doberman Labrador mix is one that is kind, loving, watchful, playful, and loyal. But even guard dog breeds like the Doberman make great family pets with proper time and effort put into training and socialization. So give your Doberman Lab Mix every bit of free time that you have to train and socialize him well. It is all up to you on how you raise and train your Doberdor. Before getting your puppy, assess if you will have the time for the necessary training, exercise, and socialization, and finally hanging around time with the dog. This is the critical part that too many dog owners omit. Brushing the Doberman Labrador Mix will be an everyday thing for spring and fall. Twice weekly is sufficient in winter and summer. Doberman Labrador mix dogs shed a lot, so plan on daily brushing in spring and fall, and a couple times weekly otherwise. Doberman Labrador Mix Health Issues Bloat or Gastric Dilatation — where gas builds up in the stomach, causing the intestines to knot up and block blood from going into and out of the stomach and heart. This can kill your dog in a matter of hours. The most common reason for this to happen is if you exercise your dog after he eats. Hip Dysplasia — common to purebreds, it is not life-threatening, but can be painful to the dog. Bone Cancer — can happen to a dog at any age, but generally happens to older dogs. The tail stops wagging from overuse and can be painful for the dog. Obesity — Be careful not to give your dog too many treats. It is easier Labrador to gain weight. Doberman Labrador mix. Doberdor Health Doberdors are generally considered to be healthy dogs—although the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Doberman Pinscher and Labrador Retriever face. This should be split up into two or even three separate sessions. Games of fetch can also help keep the breed in tip top shape. Doberdor Feeding An ideal Doberdor diet should be formulated for a large breed with high energy. Bathing needs are low and should be undertaken if the dog seems dirty. Ask your vet if you wish to put into place a regular bathing routine for your Doberdor. Due to their coat, the Doberdor does much better in warmer rather than colder climates. Think of the dog as like an older sibling, full of love and protective instincts. Teaching children to act responsibly around the dog is also a must. Most Doberdors will be okay living with other animals and pets—but you will need to very quickly let the breed know that cats and rabbits are not to be considered as prey. Again, early socialization between the breed and any resident pets is key. But where some designer dogs are so popular they are nearly household names Cockapoo , Labradoodle, Puggle , others are still catching up. The Doberdor is one such hybrid dog. Doberman Pinscher History Interestingly, like the Dobredor, the Doberman purebred dog breed also has somewhat mysterious origins. What is clear, is that this dog breed first appeared around , courtesy of one Herr Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman. So the story goes, Herr Doberman needed a guard dog to protect him during his work. Breeding efforts over time shifted from producing a fierce and unpredictable military and police dog to selecting traits for loyalty, protection and trustworthiness. This shift resulted in the Doberman breed taking its place as one of the favorite large dog family breeds. Labrador Retriever History The Labrador Retriever has been the number one most popular purebred large breed pet dog in the nation for a while now. These furry, friendly, loyal and loving large breed dogs are very popular pets and workers. Early Labradors were always black, but today the yellow lab and the chocolate lab have joined the black lab in the purebred lineup. Even those from the same litter can be completely different from one another. So, one puppy might be exactly like their Labrador Retriever parent, whilst their brother has more of a Doberman influence. Luckily, we will cover all of the options in this guide. Your puppy could have the long water-friendly tail of the Lab. Or she could have the shorter triangular shaped tail of the Doberman. The very short tail on adult Dobermans is always a result of docking during puppyhood. When it comes to ears, you can expect longer, floppier ears to predominate in any Doberman Lab mix litter. Since both the Doberman and the Labrador purebred breeds have this ear type naturally. You can read more about this here. Doberdor Size In terms of size, you can be reasonably certain your puppy will grow up to weigh anywhere from 50 to 80 pounds and stand anywhere from 21 to 27 inches high at the shoulder. Males being larger than females in most cases. Doberman Lab Mix Coat Type One area where there continues to be a great deal of variance in Doberman and Lab mix puppies is in appearance, especially when it comes to the Doberador coat. A purebred Doberman has a short, neat, sleek coat that sheds very little and needs only regular brushing for maintenance. A purebred Labrador Retriever, on the other hand, could safely be called a shedding machine. Their coats are mid-length to long, double layered and thick, with an oily feel due to the water-resistant coating on each hair. Their coats require regular grooming and brushing just to keep them under control, let alone neat. A Doberdor puppy could have a short but shaggy coat, a long but thin coat, non-oily or somewhat oily hair, a non-shedding or a shedding coat. Color Variations Coat color can also vary a great deal from one Doberdor puppy to the next. Labradors have three coat colors: black, chocolate and yellow. So here, you will just have to wait and see what coloration the genetic melting pot produces in your Doberdor puppy! For instance, a black Lab Doberman mix could come out with tan markings, or even be fawn if it takes after a fawn Doberman parent. And incredibly different in others. Both purebred dogs are known to be loving, loyal and strongly bonding. They are also affectionate to their owners, athletic and energetic. Not to mention intelligent and trainable. You can therefore expect your Doberman Lab mix to display these qualities when she grows. But, they also have an important significant difference. The Doberman is highly protective and has a guarding nature. Labs are the exact opposite. Being happy to welcome anyone, from friends to burglars, into the home with open arms. When you cross the two, there is no way to know whether your pup will be a social bunny or a bit of an introvert. Socialization From the day your pup arrives home make sure you have lots of visitors, adults and children. Take them to a number of places, with crowds and strangers. This is very important, even with a mixed breed. Because there is just no way of guessing which trait will be expressed. If the consistency and discipline of training and socialization is not there, all of the risks inherent in both purebred parent breeds can manifest in a Doberman cross Labrador puppy as well. Lack of ongoing training and socialization will produce aggression, inability to distinguish friend from foe, destructiveness, willful disobedience, separation anxiety and other unwelcome behavioral issues. The reward based nature of these will bring out the best in them. Punishing a potentially aggressive dog is dangerous, as it can mask signs of upset that the dog would otherwise use to show you they are unhappy. You can find out all about the demise of the use of dominance in this article on Alpha Dog Theory. But, no matter which parent breed your puppy takes after, they will need plenty of exercise every day. Doberman Lab puppies grow into energetic, alert dogs. Training will provide some exercise, but they will also need something more formal. This could be walks, hikes, retrieval games, swimming, and more! Labrador Doberman Mix Health and Care There is no dog breed on the planet that is completely healthy. This is simply not possible. Both Dobermans and Labrador Retrievers have their own unique set of known health issues. For this reason, it is critical to be aware of breed-specific inherited health conditions for each parent, both so you can watch for signs of these health issues manifesting and so you can do genetic testing to ensure you pick the healthiest Doberman Lab mix puppy. Doberman Pinscher Health Genetic testing can identify some of these issues in the parent. The breeder should have run heart cardiac , vision, hip and general DNA tests on the Doberman parent before mating. The main health issues potentially occurring in Doberman dogs are: Heart disease cardiomyopathy. Canine hip dysplasia.

Temperament: Friendly, gentle, and intelligent. Australian Labradoodle Appearance Since it is a hybrid the Australian Labradoodle does not have any breed standards. Regardless of size, this stocky but graceful pooch is often covered in a curly coat just like their Poodle parents. Due to its fur having the more hair-like qualities of a Poodle the Australian Labradoodle is a low-shedding dog. With soulful eyes and a dark button nose, many may mistake it as a large teddy bear if it was not for its constantly wagging tail! Height and Weight These pups come in a variety of sizes: Miniatures often stand around 14 to 16 inches tall, weighing 15 to 25 pounds. Mediums often stand 17 to 20 inches tall, weighing 30 to 45 pounds. Standards often stand 21 to 24 inches tall and weigh 50 to 65 pounds. For those living in apartments or smaller homes, a Miniature or Medium would be ideal. Colors and Coat Australian Labradoodles often come in several shades of brown, from the milkiest cream to the silkiest dark chocolate. However, you can also find them in colors such as apricot and lavender. Their coats often come in three types: Hair, Fleece, and Wool. Hair is the loosest among the coat types, with a texture resembling a shaggy Labrador. Fleece lies somewhere in the middle, being softer and silkier than Wool but wavier than the Hair variety. This texture will shed less than the Hair type and is easy to manage. Wool is the curliest of the coat types most resembling a Poodle. This texture sheds little to none and is considered the most allergy-friendly. This texture will require regular weekly brushing and professional grooming to avoid matting. Expect smooth sailing when it comes to training as all its parent breeds are famous for being eager to please. Almost all the breeds that make up the Australian Labradoodle are in the sporting group so expect your pup to be as active as its parent breeds. The Cocker Spaniel and the Labrador Retriever are both known for their friendliness, making this social pup the life of the party. Wally Conron bred the first Labradoodle after a visually impaired woman named Pat Blum contacted him. Australian Labradoodle Personality and Temperament This hybrid is known for having the friendliness of a Labrador, the gentleness of an American Cocker Spaniel, the merriness of an English Cocker Spaniel, and the intelligence of a Poodle. Because of these qualities, they are the perfect family pet — energetic enough for the kids to play with and entertaining to watch in action. Due to their high intelligence, you will have fun finding creative ways to stimulate their minds. A fun family activity can be training them a variety of tricks or creating puzzle games for your furry little Einstein to solve. With proper training and socialization, they should be able to get along with all animals and humans. They are moderately active thanks to their parent breeds. Whether you are an on-the-go family or a sporty pet parent, this pooch should be able to keep up with you on all your hikes and runs. However, it will happily cuddle on the couch with you after a long day. Noise-wise, this dog is not known for being yappy. This dog can be a lot to handle for first-time owners and can get bored without enough mental and physical stimulation. However smaller Australian Labradoodles can thrive in an apartment or condo if given the right amount of exercise and entertainment. If you can put in the time to train and exercise you will be rewarded with a friend for a lifetime. Caring for an Australian Labradoodle Caring for an Australian Labradoodle requires a fair amount of time and effort due to their high intelligence and reasonable activity level. An active family or pet parent with time to dedicate to their physical and mental stimulation is best suited for this mix. As well as basic hygiene their unique coat requires professional grooming. Depending on their coat texture this may vary, but they will need regular appointments to a groomer to trim their coat and regular brushing to avoid mats. Grooming and adequate mental stimulation are very important and lead to a happy and healthy pup. Exercise Requirements With a lineage of active breeds, the Australian Labradoodle requires a reasonable amount of exercise. A minimum minute long walk would be enough for an adult, but several shorter walks throughout the day can also work. However, your pooch would not complain if you also added 30 minutes of off-leash play. They will enjoy the basic doggie games of fetch and tug-of-war, but feel free to be creative with this lively breed. With its Labrador roots, try taking fetch to the next level by teaching them to fetch in the water. The added activity of swimming back and forth will require more energy than your average park playdate. Taking your pup hiking can help with mental stimulation as your pup is introduced to new sights and smells. Agility training can also be a great option for those with backyards. All in all, a happy dog is a tired dog, and making sure to properly exercise your furry friend can prevent boredom and destructive behavior. Number of Walks Per Day: .Total Exercise Needed Per Day: minutes. Grooming and Shedding For an Australian Labradoodle, grooming can look different depending on the coat type they have. Hair-type coats will need weekly brushing to prevent odor and tangles. As this coat type sheds on its own it is likely that your dog will need fewer visits to the groomer. Fleece-type coats will need longer and more thorough weekly brushing sessions. Your furry friend will need a weekly bath and an appointment with a professional groomer every weeks. Wool-type coats are most manageable when kept short, with weekly brushing and grooming appointments every month to keep your pooch looking smart. In addition to the above, cleaning their ears once a month will help prevent infection. Using eye wipes can keep bacteria-filled gunk away but be sure to look for a brand that does not contain irritants. However, a good rule of thumb when choosing kibble is to avoid a brand that overuses byproducts and fillers. A good kibble brand will be complete and balanced with the necessary nutrients your dog needs to be healthy. You should consider grain-free as research has found this could be better for your pup. When calculating the number of calories your dog will need, consider energy level and weight. A general rule is to add calories for every pound your dog weighs. Of course, getting the advice of your vet is always key if you are ever unsure. Hip Dysplasia: Usual with most medium to large dogs where the hip joint becomes unstable and causes bone spurs and limping. The good news is that buying from a reputable breeder can decrease the likelihood of your dog inheriting these diseases. Having pet insurance could save you the headache of going to the vets. The Australian Labradoodle originated in Australia hence the name in the s and was intentionally bred for service and therapy work. They should also not be confused with an American Labradoodle which is the cross of Labrador Retriever and Poodle only. Their eager to please attitude and high intelligence makes them easy to train. Australian Labradoodles have been intentionally bred for several generations making their traits and characteristics more predictable. Australian Labradoodles have three main coat types: Fleece: A Fleece coat can either be wavy or curly and will have a silky feel. These are typically non-shedding and relatively easy to maintain. Wool: A wool coat is curly, with a Poodle-like texture, has a cotton-like feel. These are usually non-shedding and can be a bit harder to maintain if kept long. Hair: A hair coat can be either straight or have a slight wave and is comparable to a lower generation ie F1 Labradoodle. These have are typically easy to maintain and have higher chance of shedding, but will vary by puppy. Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles that have been intentionally bred for several generations are typically non-shedding or very low-shedding. However, it is important to note that some breeders we do occasionally will do infusion litters with one of the parent breeds ie the Lab or Cocker Spaniel. These infusion litters may produce some puppies that are low to moderate shedding depending on their genetics. Australian Labradoodles can come in very wide variety of colors and patterns! Below are some examples of the colors and different patterns that we produce. Please note that not all colors and patterns are included! Nina is very expressive! She's vocal, loves to cuddle and is always wagging her tail. It is unclear how far the Australians have come in their development. Please be sure you, your children and all family members understand the signals your puppy is giving you. The puppy is not a toy and not meant to be held at will. Set limits on how many times a day no more than 4 that your child can hold the puppy. Children should only be allowed to hold the puppy if they are seated. Too much handling can physically hurt the puppy as well as begin the process of the puppy not tolerating your child. No walking around carrying the puppy. This is true for all children under 8. Puppies will chew on and sometimes ingest toys. If ingested, the pieces can lodge and cause your puppy to have to undergo surgery that is not always successful. Puppies generally do NOT like to be hugged. Puppies will jump up on people. There are two primary responses that most dogs will respond to. The first is to cross your arms, hiding your hands, and turn around showing the dog your backside and being very still. If your dog continues to jump on you they are not responding to this method and you should not continue trying it. Instead, step right into the space where there front paws are on the ground, being careful not to step on their feet. Repeat this behavior each time your dog jumps and instruct all people who your dog interacts with to do this same thing. Puppies and dogs in general will feed off of the people around them. Those who are very exciteable and talk in high pitched tones will create a dog who responds to seeing people by becoming super amped up and difficult to follow simple commands. Try to limit this. It's not in the puppies best interest to repeatedly be encouraged to escalate the excitement level to this high level. This is when the dog will become less focused and less able to follow your guidance. Keep in mind that your dog will feed off of you, your tone and your energy level. But will you recognize the signs? Imagine your puppy is growling at a child. Could you have prevented this from happening? Perhaps, but you have to know what to look for. Click below to learn more. But also with a low-shedding coat. Australian Labradoodles have been bred this way since the s. Even now, breeders are striving to make a consistent set of breed-specific traits. They hope these can be reliably passed down from one generation to the next. The breed standard was introduced in .And many enthusiasts hope they will eventually be recognized as a breed in their own right. Fun Fact! And of those 31, 29 became guide dogs. Pretty impressive for the first-ever batch of this brand-new mix. Australian Labradoodle Size Australian Labradoodles full grown can reach around 24 inches tall and weigh about 77 lbs. This will be slightly more for males on average than for females. Doodle Coats and Colors They can have one of two coat types. Either fleece-textured or wool-textured. Wool-textured coats feel—you guessed it! There are loads of different Australian Labradoodle colors! Some of the most popular include black, red, white, apricot, caramel and even parti patterns. Grooming Whether your Australian Labradoodle has a fleece- or wool-textured coat, they will need regular brushing. Usually around once a week. You might find it useful to enlist a professional groomer. When grooming, be sure to check your pup;s eyes and ears. Australian Labradoodle Temperament Australian Labradoodles are gentle, loyal, and sociable. They are not aggressive and are very good with children. Plus, they are intelligent and quick to learn. In fact, they are widely used as therapy and service dogs. Naturally playful, they enjoy time with their human families. But they should not be left alone or in crates for too long. Also, Australian Labradoodles are active dogs. They need a large amount of daily activity. At least minutes is ideal. And as a result, relatively easy to train. And puppies that are socialized early are less likely to display behavioral problems later on. Research shows that positive, rewards-based training is more effective than punishment-based training. In fact, punishments negatively affect behavior. This will help prevent weight problems. Some evidence suggests mixed-breed dogs experience fewer inherited disorders than their purebred counterparts. The limited gene pools of purebreds can cause a number of health-related issues. This is due to years of inbreeding. They may still inherit certain health conditions from either parent. An Australian Labradoodle is a great fit if you have children or other pets. They tend to be calmer than the standard Labradoodle. Early socialization and consistent rewards-based training will help your Australian Labradoodle become a great people-pleaser. But, if you work away from home for long hours, this pup may not be the best choice. The intent was to create a breed that was allergy and asthma friendly with the temperament of a service dog. This journey was inspired by a vision-impaired woman in Hawaii who needed a Guide Dog which wouldn't aggravate her husband's allergies. Of the 31 Labradoodles bred at Royal Guide Dogs, a staggering 29 made it through as guide dogs, an accolade of unparalleled proportion for this "new breed" of guide dog. Breeding for Consistency To continue the efforts of Wally Conron, breeders in Australia began breeding Labradoodles and were determined to produce litters with consistent conformation, coat type, and temperament. During the 90's, a number of other dog breeds were bred into the Labradoodle lines to assist in this effort. Most often, the English Cocker Spaniel and American Cocker Spaniel were the breeds used, however, it is reported that a few other dog breeds were also introduced into certain lines. DNA evidence of these dog breeds are still found in a few lines today, while others were bred out and not re-introduced into any other blood lines. The Labradoodle is a cross between two specific dogs, the Labrador Retriever and Poodle. Protecting Australian Labradoodle Lines Organizations have been formed to protect the continued development of the Australian Labradoodle lines, and guidelines for the continued introduction of English and American Cocker Spaniel are followed carefully. Infusion committees also discuss the merits of other possible dog breeds being allowed careful introduction into select lines. It is an exciting time to be involved in the development of this breed.

german shepherd belgian puppies - A German Shepherd rescue that focuses on adoption or rehoming is always a much safer bet for a German Shepherd than just any animal shelter you come across. Responsible rescue organizations subject potential adopters to screening applications, home visits, and reference checks in order to ensure the safety of their German Shepherds. This way, rescue organizations help dogs find a new home with a loving family, and largely prevent these dogs from ever ending up in a shelter again. That said, all of the rescues that have been chosen for this list were chosen via a strict set of criteria. The following are all excellent non-profit organizations that strive to foster, rehabilitate, and then finally rehome their German Shepherds. How do they function? Weeping Willow Sanctuary is a strict, no-kill shelter and a non-profit organization with the goal of saving as many German Shepherd dogs as they can from inhumane and unethical treatment. This rescue is committed to locating and rehoming abandoned German Shepherds in all parts of the state of Ohio. The shelter rescues GSDs from kill shelters, GSDs that are homeless, GSDs that have been in abusive homes, and owner-surrenders that have been given up for various reasons. They also function as a permanent home for senior dogs and dogs with extreme medical conditions that otherwise cannot find new homes. What do they offer? Their facilities boast a two-acre, fenced plot of land where their German Shepherd dogs are able to roam freely and enjoy socialization with other dogs as much as they want. Weeping Willow Sanctuary hosts several different events every year — from public education events to adoption events to public fundraisers specifically held for the older dogs in their care. The rescue accepts financial donations, but they mostly urge those who want to help out and have the free time to do so to volunteer since they are always in need of an extra helping hand. Of course, the team at Weeping Willow Sanctuary puts all monetary donations to good use — they utilize the funds to address the medical issues of each dog that is in their care. german shepherd belgian puppies - Medium shedding Labradanes: History Of The Breed Breeders started to mix Great Danes with Labrador retrievers in the s when designer crossbreed dogs became popular. The original intention seems to have been to make smaller versions of the Great Dane rather than larger Labradors. Labrador retrievers are retriever gun dogs that were initially bred in the United Kingdom from pups imported from Canada. They are intelligent and eager to please, which has always made them great working dogs, especially near water, since they love to swim. Over the last 50 years, they have often been utilized as working dogs, especially in roles such as disability service. They are ideally suited for this because of their intelligence, energy, and naturally friendly nature. They are one of the most popular pets in the United States. Great Danes , also known as German mastiffs, have been around since the Middle Ages and are one of the largest breeds in the world. They were used for bear, boar, and deer hunting, but they were also popular companions for their masters. They eventually became more commonly kept as pets when hunting practices changed with the introduction of firearms. They are tall, long-legged dogs with a sleek, muscular physique and the ears of a classic hound. They are highly friendly, gentle, and loving dogs despite their large size. Exactly how large they will become as adults depend on the sizes of their parents. Labradors usually measure between .Great Danes are much larger, usually measuring between 28 and 35 inches tall. They typically weigh between and pounds. The mother of the crossbreed is always the Great Dane, as the mother needs to be larger in order to protect against birthing complications. The smaller the Labrador father, the smaller your mixed breed Labradane is likely to be. Labradane pups tend to be on the heavier side, since Great Danes are already large and Labradors have a stockier build, so they can be a bit heavier than they look. Appearance It can be very difficult to know whether a crossbreed Labrador retriever Great Dane will primarily carry on the characteristics of their Labrador retriever parent, their Great Dane parent, or a mixture of both. Generally, they can either have the long face and distinctive jowls of a Great Dane or the smoother face of a Lab. However, most pups tend to have gorgeous floppy ears. When the ear canal is covered, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria. The coat of a Labradane can be black, brown, golden, or white, and they are usually the same solid color all over, but you will occasionally see Lab Great Dane mixes with distinctive patterns. Their coats tend to have a high gloss finish and can be quite oily. It is important to consider this when choosing a shampoo. While they usually shed less than a Labrador retriever, they are still moderate shedders and should be brushed at least twice a week to keep their shedding under control. Despite the thickness of their coats, they actually do just as well in hot weather and in the cold, though you should always bring an appropriate amount of water when taking them out on warmer days and look out for signs of heat exhaustion. They are also good at picking up on what is wanted from them in new training situations. However, while a Labradane can always learn new things, the boisterous nature of Great Danes means that sometimes, they might just not want to, and they might prefer to play rather than learn. This means they can need quite a bit of firmness in their training and commands so they know you are serious and that training sessions are time to obey rather than play. Training them properly from a young age will help them know the difference and make them much more controllable as adults. You can read our complete guide on crate training puppies here. Energy Levels The size of these dogs means they will struggle in a small apartment. In confined spaces, a Labradane will tend to feel cramped, and they can sometimes forget just how big they are and be a little on the clumsy side. At the same time, though, these are pretty high-energy dogs that need to be taken out on walks or for a run at least twice a day. If you are a runner, they will have no problem keeping up with you. Between 40 and 60 minutes of dedicated exercise, each day should be sufficient to keep them healthy. In addition to this, your Labradane will thrive if they have at least a modest amount of space to move around and play in, so they are happiest in a home that has a spacious, fenced-in backyard they can roughhouse in. Sociability Both Labrador retrievers and Great Danes like being with people and bond quickly with their families, so you can expect the same from their crossbred pups. Labradanes make great family pets who will love playing with children and will even take a protective attitude towards them. Just remember not to let small children play unsupervised with any dog, regardless of how familiar they might be. This is especially true with Lab Great Dane mixes, as they can forget just how big and strong they are, and accidents can happen. They get on well with other animals and tend to respond playfully rather than aggressively. This means they do particularly well in houses with other pets, as long as they are properly socialized, which is important whenever you introduce a new animal into a home that already has pets. Because they enjoy the company of people, they can only tolerate solitude for short periods of time. Your Labradane will struggle if they are left at home by themselves often while everyone is out at work or if they are left to mind the fort when the family goes on holiday. It is a good idea to think about how your lifestyle is compatible with this breed before getting a Labradane pup. They will love to go on adventure holidays with you and usually enjoy long road trips, too. You can always take them out on the water with you. Great Dane Lab mixes enjoy physical closeness with their humans, and they will love to curl up on the couch or into bed with you if you let them. Health Risks Labradanes are generally considered to be quite healthy, but like many large dogs, they can be prone to elbow and hip dysplasia. Dysplasia is a deformity in the joints which occurs when different parts of their bodies grow out of proportion. Not only is dysplasia painful, but it can also cause mobility issues. The best treatment is prevention through a healthy diet and an appropriate level of exercise when they are growing. Remember that, despite their high energy, it is possible to over-exercise pups. Until larger dogs are fully grown, they should only have about five minutes of exercise per day per one month of their age. So, a six-month-old pup only needs around 30 minutes of exercise per day. The deep chest of these dogs also means that they can be prone to bloating, so it is important to watch their diet. It is best to feed them smaller, spaced-out meals more often rather than letting them engorge themselves in a single meal. Avoid dog foods with potential irritants such as artificial additives. Great Dane Lab mixes also love their food, and they will overeat and quickly gain excess weight if you let them. It is up to their parents to strictly control their diet to make sure they stick to the right calories intake. Never feed them human food, or worse, food off your own plate, or they will pick up the bad habit of asking for your food. So, are you excited by the idea of bringing a Great Dane Lab mix home? If so, here are some questions to ask yourself when deciding whether these amazing dogs are likely to make a good fit for you and your lifestyle. Where Do You Live? These dogs are big, so they need plenty of space to be happy and comfortable. Are You Normally At Home? Great Dane Lab mixes are very personable. While this makes them great family pets, it also means they struggle when left alone for long periods of time. Will there be someone at home most of the time to keep them company, or will they be left alone for hours at a time while everyone is at work? Also, consider how often you take vacations. Will you be able to take your dog with you? If not, is there someone familiar that you will be able to leave them with while you are away? Are You Active? These dogs need quite a bit of exercise, and they will be happier joining you for a run rather than a slow stroll around the park. Will you have the time and energy to take them out for around an hour of high-energy play every day? Labradanes will also love to join you for adventures such as hikes and swims on the weekend. Are you an outdoorsy type, or are you more of a couch potato? Great Dane Lab mixes are intelligent, which means they are relatively easy to train, but they also need a firm hand. They are boisterous and big dogs, which means they need an owner or trainer with the confidence to train them and keep them under control. If you are a first-time owner, it is worth considering whether or not you are confident enough for this task. Can You Afford Their Care? Labradanes eat a lot, so maintaining their upkeep is a huge financial commitment. They are also likely to need other somewhat pricey items such as crates. Bigger dogs are generally more expensive to care for than smaller pups. Great Dane Lab mixes can be as big as a purebred Great Dane, often reaching 35 inches and weighing up to pounds. However, they are usually much smaller thanks to their Lab parent and can be anywhere from 28 to 35 inches and to pounds. Look at the size of their parents for a general idea of how large your pup is likely to grow. Are Great Dane Lab mixes good dogs? Yes, Labradanes are excellent dogs in that they are intelligent and friendly and are often a great choice if you want a larger dog. They are excellent with children and get on well with other animals, but they also require a big commitment from you. When are Labrador Great Dane mixes fully grown? You will notice your pup grows very quickly in the first six months of their lives, but they will be far from fully grown at that point. Most Great Dane Lab mixes will continue to grow until they are between the ages of 12 and 18 months. The form of their body will also change at the time, gradually taking on a leaner and more muscular appearance. How much does a Lab Great Dane mix cost? Prices can go up even further if the demand in your area is high, and the best breeders also tend to charge a bit more. Alternatively, you may find one of these great dogs in a shelter, but there are few shelters that specialize in this particular crossbreed. Start by looking at shelters that work specifically with Labradors or Great Danes to find the dog that you are looking for. The Verdict If you love large dogs and want a friendly, family-oriented dog, then a Great Dane Lab mix might be just the pup that you are looking for. These gentle giants will love being part of the family and will fit in immediately, even with children and other animals. Bear in mind, however, that they do need lots of love, exercise, and attention, meaning you need to make a commitment to them. In return, the unconditional love you will receive from your Labradane pup is well worth the investment. Do you have experience with Great Dane Lab mixes? Are you looking for a magnificent mutt to take over your home and heart? The Labradane — an endearing cross between a Great Dane and Labrador retriever — might be the perfect fit for your family! These dogs commonly exhibit a combination of traits from both parent breeds, as is the case with most mutts. However, there are a couple of traits that most Labradanes tend to have in common, such as a loyal, loving nature. There are also a couple of similar canine crosses and purebred pooches Labradane lovers may want to consider. This includes big best buddies like Irish Wolfhounds and designer dogs like the Goldendane. But despite their impressive statures, Great Danes can adapt well to relatively small spaces, as long as they are provided the exercise, stimulation, and training they need. Great Danes are known for their easy-going natures and dependable demeanors. In fact, these big doggos are actually super cuddly canines. You can find Great Danes in colors ranging from solid grey, to black to tan, and they also display merle, brindle, or harlequin coats on occasion. As they grow older, it may be more difficult to guide your gargantuan Great Dane, so make sure he has mastered his manners. These good-natured furry friends need plenty of room and moderate exercise to keep their tails wagging. Labrador Retriever The other half of the sweet Labradane can be traced back to one of the most coveted canines: the Labrador retriever. Labs have a history as bird-hunting dogs , so they certainly like to stay active and are happy to accompany you on any adventure. These smart sweethearts also make amazing therapy dogs and tend to follow their favorite humans from one room to the next. Labradors are excellent canine companions, though they need to be placed with an owner who can keep up with their moderately high energy levels, and provide plenty of exercise throughout the day. These medium-sized dogs weigh about 50 to 80 pounds and come in golden, chocolate or black coat variants. Labradane Traits and Characteristics Are you considering bringing home one of these gentle giants? Here are some generalized traits and characteristics for you to take into consideration. Like his Great Dane and Labrador parents, the mixed breed will have a fairly short, slick yet thick coat. Labradanes shed fairly regularly and should have their ears groomed on a regular basis as their large, floppy size makes them prone to ear infections. Intelligence: Labradanes are incredibly intelligent furry friends that should be fairly easy to train. Training Challenges: Luckily, Labradanes are known to be star students out of love for their humans and training treats. Labradanes can also suffer from separation anxiety and do not like being left alone for long periods of time. Health: Labradanes have a life expectancy of anywhere between 8 and 12 years. Have you ever met a Labradane before? Like it? Share it! Labradane Overview Labradanes are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Labrador Retriever or Great Dane parents. The most common colors of Labradane coats are brown, black, and white. They are usually solid colors, although small markings might be present in some cases. Labradanes love humans and need big spaces. The Labradane is great with kids, even though they sometimes forget about their own size. Labradanes tend to overeat or eat too quickly, which can lead to bloat or obesity. Labradane History The Labradane came about during the designer dog craze in the s. The Labrador was previously called the St. Labradane Size The Labradane is usually described as a large or even giant dog. As a newer dog breed, exact size standards might vary, but with Labrador and Great Dane heritage you can definitely expect your dog to be on the bigger end of the scale. Most weigh in at to pounds and range in height from 24 to 30 inches. Female Labradanes can sometimes be a little smaller than their male counterparts. The gentle giant reputation the breed has picked up is very warranted. This dog loves to hang out with humans whenever possible, although they might, on occasion, be wary of total strangers. Brisk walks are great for them, and the Labradane is always a star at the local dog park. Just be wary that sometimes they can act a little goofy and not always realize the extent of their own size! It goes without saying that big dogs need big living spaces. A large family environment is preferred—this is not a dog for a single person living in an apartment situation. Labradane Health Labradanes are generally considered to be healthy dogs—although the breed is a deep-chested dog, which can lead to digestive issues and bloat. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Labradanes can become obese due to overeating—consider serving smaller, monitored meals throughout the day rather than letting the dog free-feed. Twice daily walks are standard for a Labradane. Labradanes need to keep up a structured exercise regime through their life, not only to stay toned but to avoid any mobility issues that might arise from inactivity. The breed also likes to be mentally stimulated, so provide interactive toys and consider adding variety to play sessions and walking routes. This will help ward off infection. Labradane Feeding An ideal Labradane diet should be formulated for a large-sized breed with medium energy. Labradanes need to stick to a heathy diet. The breed is usually the same color all over, although small markings might be present in some cases. Labradanes have short and dense coats. Their short hair should be brushed twice a week as part of a regular grooming routine, although in spring months you may notice slightly heavier than usual shedding, so update your regime as appropriate. Bathing your Labradane once a month is recommended. The breed is usually fine living in all climates—although, in hot weather, make sure that heat exhaustion is not a risk during walks. This is a playful breed that enjoys forming close bonds with the humans in their life. Labradanes can also become quite protective of the people they live with. However, if you have very young kids, make sure to supervise play sessions as sometimes this gentle giant of the dog world forgets about its large size. The Labradane is usually tolerant of other animals, including dogs. Although always exercise caution before introducing new pets to each other. Labradane Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Labradanes because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Labrador Retriever or Great Dane breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Rescues that cater to large or giant breeds might also be able to help. Here are some rescues you can try:. Video: Labradane Lab Great Dane Mix Playing and Retrieving Temperament and Behavior The Labradane, characterized by a pleasant disposition, makes a great companion desiring to be closely bonded to its human family. Always eager to please its owner, the dog craves for praise and affection. It will welcome your visitors unless it sees something suspicious. Besides its protective nature, its imposing appearance can be intimidating for an unwanted stranger. A Labradane is well disposed toward kids and other pets if raised with them. However, its size can cause problems, as it can accidentally knock over a small child. Make sure that you teach your kids how to approach and get along with these big dogs safely. Care Exercise Even though Labradanes are quiet indoors, they need regular minute walks or interactive playing sessions in a secured area. They should not be overly exercised especially when young since puppies are vulnerable to bone and joint problems. Grooming Their coat needs regular brushing with a firm-bristled brush, as it helps in keeping the fur healthy and clean, thereby reducing the number of baths they need. Brush their teeth times a week and trim their nails once a month. When their ears show signs of infection, clean them with a pH-balanced solution. Health Problems The Great Dane Lab mixes are affected by certain health issues including elbow and hip dysplasia, improper development of bones and joints, PRA, epilepsy, cataracts, gastric torsion, and acute moist dermatitis. Training Start training the Labradanes early because their sheer size could make them difficult to control by the time they become adults. Socialization: To prevent your pet dog from exhibiting aggression or fear when meeting strangers, properly socialize Labradane puppies with unfamiliar people and pets. You may check in your neighborhood for groups that take their dogs to the park or ask the dog walkers to join you on the route. Teaching your dog to chase and fetch: Encourage your pet to go after a ball, Frisbee, or stick by tossing it a short distance. When your dog goes for it, reward with praises and treats. If your dog refuses to bring the toy back, you can use another object and throw it in an opposite direction. This will help in familiarizing your pet to the idea of going back to you once it has grabbed the object. After your dog has mastered this, try calling your dog back and ask it drop the object. Feeding The Labradane needs four and a half to six cups of dry dog food per day. But the Great Dane gentle nature quickly took over and by the end of the century, they were more popular among royalty where they received endless pampering. If we go all the way back to 3, BC and 2, BC, we find drawings and pictures of a similar-looking dog in both Egypt and Babylonian respectively. The Labrador Retriever is a newer breed compared to the Great Dane with early reports showing the Lab popped up sometime during the 18 or 19th century. At that time, they were called the St. The Labrador Retriever takes it name from Labrador, Newfoundland. So what about the history of the Lab Dane mix? As well, there have been several dozen new hybrid mixes created in the last two decades due to the designer breed craze. Appearance Like many designers breeds the appearance of The Labradane can vary with some looking just like the Great Dane, others like the Lab. However, the majority will dawn a unique blend of the two. Both parents are larger dogs, with the Great Dane being particularly tall, so you can count on their puppies being big and most likely weighing around lbs. As well, with both dogs having genes for a black coat, the majority of Labradanes have a short and silky obsidian coat. They have large block-shaped heads that sit on an equally bulky body. The AKC recognizes three coat colors: yellow, chocolate, and black, but sometimes you will see coats that are more red, white, or sliver. Their coat is short, but dense due to its double layer. They have a large block-shaped head like the Labrador, but unlike them, they have a very lean and hard body with a big chest that slopes into a tight stomach. Oh, and they also have those incredibly long legs that define their appearance. The AKC recognizes six varieties of coat colors: fawn, brindle, harlequin, black, mantle, and blue. The Great Dane can come in several colors not recognized by show arenas, however: white, fawnequin, brindlequin, merle, merlequin, blue merle, chocolate, and fawn mantle. Temperament Both the Great Dane and the Labrador Retriever are known for their intelligent, loyal, and friendly nature. The Great Dane is often called a gentle giant, and the Labrador is easily one of the best family dogs around. The biggest difference in temperament is the Lab loves to run and be active while the Great Dane prefers to relax. Now, Great Dane puppies are very active, but this naturally goes away with age, as well, hyperactivity is discouraged because it puts their rapidly growing bones at risk. All-and-all, the Labradane is a designer dog whose personality is easier to predict because the Lab and Dane share so many traits. Lifespan Lifespan can really vary with designer dogs making it hard to predict how long your Labradane will live for. Unfortunately, Great Danes have a very short lifespan with most only living between years. The Labrador Retriever, on the other hand, typically lives between years. Health A Labradane puppy can inherit genetic diseases from both sides, which increases the number of health conditions they are prone to. On the bright side, they have better genetic diversity than their parents, and this is the key to avoiding inherited health conditions. Essentially, genetic diversity helps good genomes block bad genomes from expressing themselves. Their biggest fight is often with obesity, which puts them at risk for several health conditions. So when you look at the long list below, know that obesity plays in factor in many. Due to their popularity, Labradanes are priced quite high. If you are looking for a unique hybrid, the Labradane may be the pup for you. They are gentle giants full of love! Labradanes can weigh over pounds Labradanes can easily weigh over pounds, sometimes hitting close to pounds. Although the average Labrador Retriever rarely weighs over pounds, the Great Dane can weigh over pounds. Labradanes Shed a Lot Labradanes may have short coats, but their shedding can be overwhelming. Labradanes Love to Eat Unlike some breeds and mixes, Labradanes love to eat. These large dogs are happy snuggling on the couch with their favorite person, but they do enjoy playtime and romping around off-leash. While not all Labradanes may possess the same qualities as their littermates, we can take a closer look at the parents to have an idea of what to expect: Great Danes are known for being the gentle giants of the dog world but are sadly known for their short lifespans. These massive canines are excellent companions that rarely have aggression issues, but their imposing size makes them deterrents to unwanted visitors. Great Danes are also a popular choice for service work, often trained in helping people with physical disabilities move around from place to place. Labrador Retrievers are the most popular dog breed almost exclusively around the world, mostly due to their cheerful and good-natured demeanors. Although they can be raucous as young puppies, Labs usually mellow within a few years. Labs, as well as Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds, make exceptionally great seeing-eye dogs. Temperaments can vary wildly with mixed breeds, but Labradanes seem to have missed the memo and are known for being relatively calm and mild-mannered. They do best with homes that have adequate space for them, so this hybrid is not the best choice for small apartment living. Shedding is light throughout the year, but it may get heavier during its shedding season. When shedding is light, brushing once or twice a week would suffice. While heavy shedding might require regular daily brushing. A firm-bristled brush may be used as it helps in maintaining the fur healthy and clean. Applies to all dog food recalls in the U. You can also opt for a swimming activity since this hybrid dog loves swimming a lot. Proper cleaning and care should be given to their ears as these sites tend to accumulate dirt and bacteria easily. If you suspect any signs of ear infection, clean the ears with a pH-balanced solution. Long nails should also be trimmed to avoid problems concerning tearing or splitting if they are not worn down naturally. Just like other dog breeds, dental health is also essential with your Lab Great Dane. Make sure to brush their teeth at least twice or thrice a week to prevent tooth decays. Regular exercise activities should also be helpful to keep off gaining excess weight. Elbow and Hip Dysplasia: These conditions are common among large dog breeds. It happens when the ball and socket joint is malformed, so instead of sliding smoothly across one another, the bones do not adequately meet. Dysplasia causes unbearable pain to your Great Dane Lab mix. Cardiomyopathy: Your Labradene may also suffer from heart conditions, such as cardiomyopathy. Make sure to always to bring your Lab Great Dane to his veterinarian at least once a year. Panosteitis — Also known as Shifting Leg Lameness or Pano, this condition is occasionally seen among dogs with long legs due to the rapid growth of their bones. Bloating: Your dog may also suffer from bloating caused by gas buildup in the stomach. It may inflate like a large balloon wherein the abdomen may become overstretched. At worst condition, the heart and the stomach may not get enough blood and oxygen, which may cause the stomach to die. Bloating can be fatal. Lab crossed with Great Dane Exercise Requirements The Labrador crossed with Great Dane is an energetic dog, so regular exercise is needed to release its excess energy and to keep him happy and healthy. Regular routine practice is not only good for your dog, but it is also beneficial for your health. He requires at least 30 minutes of physical activity or interactive play sessions daily. The Labradanes love to go for walks, but you can also try other outdoor activities. Here are some examples that you can enjoy with your Labrador crossed with Great Dane: Hiking: It is a great way to turn your daily walk to an exciting and fun activity for you and your dog. You can try going to the woods near your area for a little adventure and hike for a few distances. Swimming: Because of the Labrador Retriever in his lineage, the Labradane is also one of those few dogs who love swimming. It also provides relief from the heat during the summer months. You may also add some twist to the activity by using either a Frisbee or a tennis racquet to throw the object farther. Lab Great Dane Training Since the Labradane is a highly energetic breed which can sometimes be overly enthusiastic and boisterous, early training and socialization are essential aspects in calming down this hybrid. This is important because they can be difficult to control once they become adults because of their sheer size. Here are some types of training your Lab mixed with Great Dane may need: Socialization Training: Socialization at an early age has been proven to prevent your Labradane from developing aggressive behaviors, anxiety, and fearfulness later on in their adulthood. It should be included in the training routine of any responsible dog parent. The key to socialization training is to introduce and expose your dog to different people, animals, and environments as early as a puppy. Basic Obedience Training: Your Labradene puppy needs to grasp basic obedience training commands such as sit down, come, stay drop, stop and recall so you can control their behavior when needed. As previously mentioned, this crossbreed can be overly enthusiastic, so you also need to train him how not to get too excited. Encourage them to go inside their crate by using treats as rewards. When training your Great Dane Lab, keep in mind that your puppy must see you as the leader of the pack. Avoid being overly strict while training your pup as he may grow up fearing you instead of showering you with loyalty. Make sure to be gentle but firm in training him. They will easily listen and follow your instructions and are eager to participate in the training session with you. Remember to implement positive reinforcement. Treats and praises can go a long way in helping good behavior stick. Great Dane Labrador and Families Despite his large size, the Great Dane crossed with Labrador Retriever is a great family dog because of his affectionate and loving nature. They are patient, friendly and gentle with children and other pet animals. Careful attention should still be given when they are around babies and infants as they can be overly-enthusiastic and they might unintentionally hurt small kids when playing due to their large size. With proper socialization and training, the Great Dane Lab should make a loveable and excellent family companion. They can be your loyal pet companion as long as you shower them with equal love and care. Be a responsible dog parent by feeding them well, socializing them and giving them sufficient amount of exercises and training. References: Wang, Ping, et al. Walton, Joel, and Eve Adamson.
