That said, the amount of stress you put on a dog should be measured by their level of maturity. Every dog is a little different. And the more insecure the dog is genetically, the longer you should wait to do GDS protection training. Ideally, you might consider waiting until 6 months to a year to bring in a agitator that challenges your dog and you. This is where you will truly find out if your German Shepherd will protect you. Not to defend himself or your house or his back yard or to bite because of prey drive. German Shepherd protection is very powerful. Think about it. If someone was threatening you audibly in public you may have plenty of options to run away. But if someone grabbed your toddler you might try to hurt them, quickly and without hesitation. Consider beginning this exercise in a narrow pathway where the dog cannot ignore the situation. A very narrow alley or even a hallway in a building. Have the dog on a leash and harness or at least a very wide flat collar. Leather Collar is best. The dog can either be tied to something, in the control of a family member or a very good friend. German Shepherd Guard Dogs I will differentiate German Shepherd guard dog training from personal protection for the convenience of categorization. Obviously there is some crossover where another expert could disagree. German guard dogs already have it in the breed. And a guard dog is just that. So if personal protection is instinct regarding the owner, and to guard is to be like a junkyard dog, an attack dog would go for anyone on the street also called green dogs. And of course a given dog can meet all that criteria. How to train your German shepherd to attack is called training a dog in defense. This is because he is not actually protecting you or the house. Tracking In Schutzhund training, your German Shepherd will learn a very comprehensive type of tracking that starts with scent nose work and continues with the use of training aids that simulate footprints and different types of terrain. A full competitive tracking course includes all of the elements from easiest to hardest. Short and long trails, straight and divergent trails, articles items to scavenge or identify, close quarters and distance from handler tracking and all types of terrain from wet to dry and grass to soil. Tracking in a variety of conditions teaches your dog to stay focused, manage their stress, and stay the course no matter what obstacles come before them. Protection The protection training portion of Schutzhund training and competition evaluates a German Shepherd on the three basic drives that all GSDs have: defensive drive, prey drive, and social drive. The social drive is perhaps the most important because this is the drive that bonds your dog to you. You have to know that your German Shepherd understands who they are protecting and also who must be obeyed no matter what. This is your number one protection against canine aggression. The prey drive is a deeply instinctive drive that is born of an innate urge to chase, to hunt, to bite, to eat. The prey drive is what can quickly get out of hand if a German Shepherd is not properly trained in the art of protection. The defensive drive is more of a learned drive that is based on the ancient fight-or-flight survival instinct. A dog that is defensive will have all kinds of methods at their disposal, from growling or barking to running towards or running away. Rather, their ultimate goal is to see the threat in active retreat. If barking can accomplish that, then attack will not be needed. As Schutzhund Training explains, dogs in Schutzhund training learn to use all kinds of different grips, holds, and bites to protect their charges from an aggressor. By the time the training program has been completed, the dog should be able to demonstrate mastery both at close quarters with their handler and an attacker, and at a great distance from each. There are many different training programs available today that are designed to teach dogs of any breed how to serve as personal protection and guard dogs to people. Puppies use their mouths to explore their environment and learn about the world. The benefits of appropriate chewing The teething process typically starts when puppies are 3 months old. You can expect your Labradoodle puppy to be teething until the adult molars come in at 6 to 7 months of age. Chewing is a natural instinct that facilitates teething and soothes sore gums. Your puppy may also enjoy chewing for fun, or to alleviate boredom. Try different items and see what your puppy enjoys the most. Your puppy cannot tell the difference between old and new. You can also put a wet towel in the freezer and give it to your puppy to alleviate teething pain. You will need to teach your puppy to only chew on certain items. Pick up or secure any inappropriate items your puppy might chew on. This includes clothes, shoes, papers, trash, and electronic devices. Keep in mind that most spray deterrents have to be reapplied frequently to maintain effectiveness. Supervising your puppy Always keep an eye on your puppy in the house. Despite your best efforts, your puppy will probably find something inappropriate to chew on. If you see your puppy chewing on an inappropriate item, interrupt the behavior and give your puppy a chew toy. Praise your puppy for taking it. Underbites in the Australian Labradoodle The Australian Labradoodle does have one known genetic issue cropping up occasionally around the globe, many breeders have yet to be able to stop it because it does involve 8 genes, any two randomly matching can cause it and just about fifty percent of Australian Labradoodles seem to be carriers of one of the 8, so which random breeding partners express it in a few of their offspring is always a surprise. What is this issue, the underbite. The underbite is far from a serious concern compared to Hip Dysplasia, Addisons, Eye Issues, Cardiac issues and all those at a life altering level, however it does happen and it is visible. We are trying to breed away from it, however this may be a long road since the underbite is a genetic issue of 8 genes requiring just one to be passed by both the mother and the father. A slight underbite in a puppy is what makes an Australian Labradoodle a pet quality puppy. Rainmaker Ranch does inform all families if this is expressed in a puppy, it is not possible to actually see until teeth come in around 6 to 7 weeks of age. These are slight underbites, and are typically gone by the time the adult teeth come in. It is uncommon in our program but does occasionally occur. We request that you call our vet at if you have questions on slight underbites and if you are adopting a puppy with a slight underbite that you have your vet discuss the issue with our vet before your puppy arrives. We have never had a serious under bite and consider this another issue entirely. We do not discount a slight underbite as this is a very minor issue. We do have our vet look at the jaw and teeth, at this point we are looking at the puppy teeth that have grown in from age 6 weeks to 4 months then they fall out and the adult teeth come in. In addition we do offer to pay for your first teeth cleaning directly to your vet of record when the time comes whenever that may be, just in case the bite did cause any additional wear that is yet to be identified. Link to Vet Dentistry Defined An under bite under shot, reverse scissors bite, prognathism, class 3 occurs when the lower teeth protrude in front of the upper jaw teeth. When the upper and lower incisor teeth meet each other edge to edge, the occlusion is considered an even or level bite. Constant contact between upper and lower incisors can cause uneven wear, periodontal disease, and early tooth loss. Level bite is considered normal in some breeds, although it is actually an expression of under bite. Sharp Bite faults are one of the first hereditary defects a fledgling dog breeder learns to recognize. Teeth are right out there where everybody can take a look at them. In order to fully understand bite faults, you must also understand what is correct and why. This goes beyond having the right number of the right teeth in the right places. Figure 1 is a coyote skull, exhibiting a normal canine complement of teeth. Each jaw has six incisors at the front, followed by two canines, then eight premolars four to a side. When we come to the molars, the top and bottom jaws differ. The lower jaw has six and the upper only four. A normal dog will have a total of 42 teeth. Have you ever wondered how paleontologists know what a particular dinosaur did for a living? They look at the teeth. If you know what it ate, you can draw some good conclusions about how it might have behaved. We know what wolves and coyotes eat. The toolbox for delivering their self-serve meals is carried in their mouths. That must be done with the teeth and each type has a specific purpose. The canines are most critical to catching and holding prey. This is not the way a wolf does it, for reasons that will be explained shortly. Fig 2 Note how the canines overlap and cross in their alignment. Wild canids, like this coyote, use the canines to grip their prey. The interlocking teeth prevent the prey from pulling free. A wolf grips with the front of his mouth. The four canine teeth puncture the prey. Their overlapping structure see Fig. The 4th upper premolar and the first lower molar on each side are especially developed for this task. They are very sharp and their location mid-way down the length of the jaw puts them at the point where jaw pressure is greatest. The incisors, located at the front of the mouth, are for delicate work. They nibble the last bits of meat off bones and are also handy for scratching an itch or pulling something bothersome out of the coat or from between the pads. Fig 3 The carnasals fourth upper premolar and first lower molar are the largest canine teeth, designed for shearing off chunks of meat. The molars, other than the lower carnasals, are flat for grinding. Molars Fig. Wolves and coyotes will eat some amount of fruits, grasses and other plant matter. This food needs to be chewed a little to start the digestive process. Cats, by contrast, are strict carnivores. The only plant matter they eat is whatever happens to be inside the animal they are eating. Cats have no molars. All these specialized teeth are not independent entities. Their position in the jaw is determined by their function and they require a properly formed skull and lower jaw to function efficiently. The muzzle must be long enough and broad enough to accommodate the teeth in their proper locations. The animal must have sufficient bite strength to hold onto whatever it has grabbed, be it prey or perpetrator. Jaw strength comes not only from the muscles, but the shape of the skull. Fig 4 Australian Shepherd above and coyote below. Aussies have a normal skull conformation, as can be seen from the similarities between these two. Figure 4 shows the skulls of a coyote and an Australian Shepherd. Aussies have normally-shaped heads, so the shape of its skull is very similar to that of the coyote. The jaw muscles attach to the lower jaw and along the sagittal crest, the ridge of bone along the top and back of the skull. In between it passes over the zygomatic arch, or cheekbone. Wrapping around the cheekbone gives the bite much more strength than would a straight attachment from topskull to jaw. You will note that the crest on the coyote is more pronounced than on the Aussie and its teeth are proportionally larger. This is a typical difference between domestic dogs and their wild kin. Wild canids need top efficiency from their dental equipment to survive. We have been providing food for our dogs for so long that the need for teeth as large and jaws as strong as their wolf ancestors has long passed. Fig 5 Coyote left and Aussie right. Note the straighter angulation around the zygomatic arch cheekbone of the Aussie. Jaw strength is reduced in the dog by a less acute angle around the zygomatic arch. Note the more pronounced angle in the coyote as compared to the Aussie. The larger sagital crest allows for a larger, and therefore stronger, muscle. Breeds with long, narrow heads have even straighter angulation around the cheekbone, and therefore an even weaker jaw. The narrow jaw may also cause crowding of the incisors. Toy breeds with round heads often have little or no sagittal crest and very weak jaws. The jaws of short-muzzled breeds may also be of unequal lengths. The more we have altered skull and jaw shape from the norm, the less efficient the mouth has become. There is no reason for a Collie or a Chihuahua to bite with the strength of a wolf. However, jaws that are so short it is impossible for all the teeth to assume normal positions and undershot bites that prevent proper occlusion of the canines and incisors are neither efficient nor functional, despite volumes of breed lore justifying those abnormalities in breeds where they are considered desirable. For most breeds, like the Australian Shepherd, the skull shape has remained relatively normal. The short muzzle of the Pug and the undershot bite of a Bullmastiff, while quite acceptable in those breeds, would be deemed severe faults in Aussies and other normal-skulled breeds. Most breeds with normal skull structure were originally developed to perform a function herding, hunting, guarding, etc. Since that structure is the most efficient it was maintained, with minor variations, in most functional breeds. Typical dental faults in these breeds are missing teeth and malocclusions. It is evident that these faults are inherited, but not a great deal is known about the specifics of that inheritance. In some breeds, some defects appear to have a simple mode of inheritance, but this is not the case across all breeds. That, plus the complex nature of dental, jaw and skull structure, indicates that in most cases the faults are likely to be polygenic, involving a group of genes. Missing teeth obviously are not there to do the work they are intended for. They should be considered a fault. The degree of the fault can vary, depending on which teeth and how many are missing. The teeth most likely to be absent are premolars, though molars and sometimes incisors may occasionally fail to develop. Missing a first premolar, one of the smallest teeth, is much less a problem than missing an upper 4th premolar, a carnasal. The more teeth that are missing, the more faulty and less functional the bite becomes. If you have a dog with missing teeth, it should not be bred to other dogs with missing teeth or to the near relatives of such dogs. Though multiple missing teeth are not specifically faulted in either Australian Shepherd standard, you should think long and hard before using a dog that is missing more than a couple of premolars. Fig 6 Undershot bite. While the molars and some of the premolars occlude properly, the incisors and canines don't even meet and are essentially useless. This is a farmed silver fox. Malocclusions this severe are extremely unusual in wild foxes. An undershot bite occurs when the lower jaw extends beyond the upper. However, that changes when you go to an F1b. At that point, you have a Poodle being bred with an F1 Labradoodle. But the good news is that it does also apply to an F2 Labradoodle. However, do keep in mind that you have no absolute guarantee when it comes to a Labradoodle with straight hair. But at least you do increase your chances by half when you go for either F1 or F2. Avoid Any B Labradoodle One thing we must stress is that you need to avoid any Labradoodle generation that has a b in the number. You see, with a backcross, what the breeder does is it takes the Labradoodle and crosses it with another Poodle. That is why the genetic component of the original Labrador drops so much as it is effectively watered down. This applies if talking about F1b, F2b, or anything else. So, if owning one with straight hair comes across as an enticing prospect, then run a mile when you see that B part appearing in their heritage. Aside from a straight hair Labradoodle looking different to what you would expect, should you know of any other potential issues related to them? Well, it turns out that you do need to think about a couple of problems before taking ownership of a straight hair Labradoodle. Shedding Even though a straight hair Labradoodle does not shed as much as other breeds, they do shed more than a curly hair Labradoodle. Hypoallergenic As a result of them shedding a bit more hair, it does mean they are not quite as hypoallergenic as the curly hair Labradoodle. The reason for this is due to the components of the wavy coat. The wavy coat has non-shedding factors with a reduced level of dander that then spreads over the floor. But the straight hair Labradoodle is still a good option for any individual searching for a hypoallergenic dog for thief family and home. At times people simply want to own a Labradoodle, whether the hair is straight or wavy is just not important. But for others, the straight hair Labradoodle has more unique features than the wavy hair. People expect a Labradoodle to have the curly hair, so it just makes their dog stand out from the crowd. But then you need to also remember the earlier point regarding the hypoallergenic nature and low shedding. Both of those points remain key for a lot of people. You Can Actually Do Genetic Testing It is possible for you to have your dog undergo genetic testing to determine if they will end up with a straight or wavy coat. This testing remains the best way of understanding what your dog will look like when fully grown. The main thing that genetic testing is looking at is a specific gene. The Cu locus is a specific gene related to the appearance of curly hair. If the gene is present in their genetic makeup, then it means your dog will indeed end up with curly hair. Typically the answer will be no. If you live in a hot country, then during the summer times, it might be worth considering to give them a trim. Not a shave! Just a light trim to help stop their bodies from over heating. The fur coat, actually protects their skin from sun burn, and helps to prevent it from drying out, which can cause skin conditions. Clean up the hair around the dogs face, in particular around the eyes, if it has bushy eyebrows, and around the muzzle. It is best to look at reducing the length of the fur in areas that can could cause health problems or discomfort, if the fur was to become clumped up and mattered. How to Best Control Shedding? Straight haired labradoodles shed a lot more than any other labradoodles. As tempting as it may be to shave your furry companion to help counter shedding. It nonetheless remains inadvisable and should be avoided. It can be lessened however. Just as we humans shed hair, so will a healthy and happy dog. Throughout the year, your pooch will continue to shed hair, more so as the weather warms up and their winter coat falls out. To counter this, get in the habit of giving your dog regular grooming. A little bit of brushing can go a long way. It removes loose hair, and helps to re-affirm the bond between you and your dog, as they enjoy the attention and can even find the grooming to be relaxing. Bathing your dog should be kept to a minimum as the shampoos and warm water can lead to dry skin and other skin conditions. Instead take your dog for swims or use lukewarm water to rinse off their coats. The most important thing to remember is to keep your dog in a comfortable environment, as stress can cause a dog to shed even more. A good diet helps to promote stronger hair follicles and a shinny coat, that can help reduce shedding. Some owners later discover that they are allergic to straight haired labradoodles. While it may be tempting to shave off their fur, in an attempt to eliminate the allergic reactions. This should never be done! Allergies are not triggered by dog fur. They are caused by pet dander — skin particles that are shed by the dog all year long. By shaving the fur off, the owner is actually making things worse for themselves. It drys the skin out, removing moisture and causes rashes to develop. As a result more skin is shed, exposing the pet owner to more dander. Bathing your dog can be effected by many different factors and can be very situational. You may need to bath them more frequently for medical reasons, or because of what they have decided to roll in. Generally speaking, bathing your labradoodle should be more infrequent. Over bathing your dog can strip its fur of natural oils that help to protect their skin and strengthen their hair. Ideally, you should limit proper bathes to when they start to smell a little, or if you need to remove matter from their fur. If they are just dirty with dust and mud, use lukewarm water or a running hose to wash away the dirt. Alternatively encourage them to swim in a body of water such as a river or at the beach while under your supervision. As a precautionary measure you can get a life jacket for your labradoodle. When you do need to give them a proper bath, use a mild oatmeal or coconut based dog shampoo. It will strip away some of the oils from their coat, but these types of shampoos will help to keep the skin moisturized. Over bathing can lead to skin irritations that can be itchy and uncomfortable. Dogs do not need to have baths as much as humans need to. How to Watch Out for Skin Conditions If your Labradoodle has any skin conditions, this could cause them to shed more fur, or even release more dander into the air. They may show signs of a skin condition by excessive scratching or nipping and licking at the same area. Remember mites and parasites can cause just as much damage to the skin as over-bathing. Like the fleece coat, the hairs just get trapped in the surrounding fur rather than falling to the ground. Because of this, it can be truly time-consuming to brush and groom the true wool Labradoodle coat type. Earlier we mentioned how the puppy coat has a softer, finer, thinner texture than the adult Labradoodle coat — no matter which adult type they have. But how can you know if your Labradoodle puppy will keep their straight hair or grow up to have a wavy, fleece coat or a curly, wool coat? By 14 months old, your puppy should have their full adult coat. So, the sort of time that a puppy will go to their forever home. This is more likely when you are working with a later generation breeder. Many later generation breeders will work specifically with fleece or wool coat Labradoodles as breeding stock.
