Percent of hours slept per day Heatmap of hours slept over one week Remember, every bulldog is different and age plays a big role in how many hours your dog will sleep. Our English bulldog, Ollie, at the time of writing this is 6 months old and weighs about 45lbs. Why do English bulldogs sleep so much? No one really knows why bulldogs sleep so much. REM standings for rapid eye movement. Both dogs and humans require a certain amount of REM sleep per 24 hour cycle to remain healthy. If you notice your bulldogs eyes moving or legs twitching during their sleep they are most likely in the REM phase of the sleep cycle. Bulldog puppies between the ages of 0 — 18 months sleep between 18 — 20 hours per day. Puppies when awake are active and energetic. The increased expenditure of energy requires additional sleeping time to recuperate. Additionally, bulldog puppies are growing every day. Many hours of sleep are needed to grow into a strong smart bulldog! So let your sleeping dog lie! We created a recommended products page which links to every product we personally use for our English bulldog, Ollie. Between the ages of 3 and 6 you can expect your bulldog to sleep around 12 — 14 hours per day. Sleep will be mostly at night with many naps sprinkled throughout the day. When your bulldog becomes a senior citizen around the age of they will start sleeping similar amounts of hours to a puppy. Just like us humans the older your bulldog gets the more sleep and naps are needed to get through the day. What times of day do English bulldogs sleep? Bulldogs sleep 7 to 8 hours uninterrupted throughout the night. During the day bulldog naps will occur throughout the day and total about 5 to 7 hours. What days of the week do English bulldogs sleep the most? English bulldogs sleep patterns and length of sleep is greatly influenced by their owners schedules. For bulldogs whose owners are away at work Monday through Friday, those days will be their heaviest sleep days. Weekends or other days where owners are spending more time at home will encourage a bulldog to stay awake for more hours to increase their play time with their owners. When should you be concerned with your English bulldogs sleep? Signs of viral, bacterial infections or cancer can include change in sleeping patterns along with some of the following: Bathroom accidents inside the house Change or loss of appetite Not playing as frequently. Just about every breed sleeps for at least 12 hours a night, but bulldogs may need a bit longer. The amount of sleep a bulldog needs depends highly on age, but there are some key underlying genetic factors. Reason 1: All Dogs Need A Lot Of Sleep Different species of animals sleep an incredibly diverse amount of time per day, with bats sleeping as much as 20 hours a day and giraffes sleeping as little as 2! Even so, the amount that dogs sleep per day is still considered to be quite a bit compared to similar species. Unlike dogs, wolves are nocturnal and sleep only hours a day. In the process of domestication, dogs developed a diurnal sleeping pattern to match their human counterparts. Like us, all dogs sleep roughly 8 hours a night. Daily naps, on the other hand, are irregular and split throughout the day. One theory for all these extra naps is that dogs get less REM sleep during each sleep cycle. REM rapid eye movement sleep is one of two major types of basic sleep for you and your dog. It might seem unintuitive, but the deepest part of sleep is actually when we are the most active! This is the phase where dogs dream and the part that makes them feel rested in the morning. Truthfully, a good chunk of the time we think they are asleep bulldogs are simply lounging around. Some may consider their bulldogs lazy, but taking it easy is simply in their blood. English Bulldogs originated in the 13th century after pugs and mastiffs were crossed to create a breed for fighting bulls. Thankfully, bull-baiting was outlawed in England in the s, leading to bulldogs nearly becoming an extinct breed while other bully breeds grew in popularity. Devoted lovers of the sturdy breed began selecting dogs with gentle and sweet natures for the explicit purpose of making the bulldog a family pet. Bulldogs still retain their brave nature from their fighting days which can sometimes if you need a guard dog but have instead been bred for a sluggish yet sweet temperament for nearly two centuries. Accordingly, Bulldogs have been placed in the non-sporting group by the American Kennel Club and are biologically predisposed to be less active than their working counterparts. For as adorable and distinctive as their faces make them, bulldogs have a host of health issues because of it. The broad, short-snouted head shape that bulldogs have is referred to as brachycephalic. These types of dogs have difficulty with heat regulation and proper breathing, so even moderate amounts of exercise wear them out and even put them at risk for heat-related illness. Thier big head can also make it difficult to find a properly sized collar , too! As goofy and fun-loving as they are, bulldogs usually need to end playtime with a nice nap to cool off and get proper airflow. Reason 4: Young Bulldogs Need Extra Sleep To Grow Since puppies are famous for being playful and energetic, you may be wondering how on Earth they sleep hours a day. But anyone who has been around a bulldog puppy knows that they can go from running around the room to snoring at the drop of a hat- no matter what the time! According to veterinarian Jeff Warber in an interview with Yahoo! News , puppies experience rapid muscular, mental, and physical growth. This makes play and exercise important for the healthy development of a young bulldog in every way, which wears them out quickly. With all the food that they eat and the growing that they do, bulldog puppies need quite a bit of shut-eye throughout the day! Reason 5: Older Dogs Need More Sleep In its later years, a bulldog will likely sleep more as part of the aging process. Senior dogs may sleep hours a day, and even hours a day is considered normal. Even perfectly healthy elderly dogs will become significantly less active throughout the day. Bulldogs are unfortunately susceptible to sleep disorders— namely, sleep apnea. Of course, there are a few more common causes to consider before jumping to the conclusion that your dog has this issue. Reason 1: An Irregular Sleep Schedule Although your dog might not be able to read your watch, it still has a biological clock! Like most mammals, dogs have a circadian rhythm that acts as a hour timer to regulate sleep. In wild dogs, this pattern would be synchronized with the natural light pattern of the rising and setting sun. Domestic dogs may not share the same sleep patterns as humans, but we often sleep at the same time. This is fine when we have regular sleep, but life events or unexpected changes may require us to wake and sleep at odd times. All of us have to adjust our sleep-schedules every now and then, but frequent changes can be problematic for both you and your bulldog. Reason 2: Sickness A sleepy bulldog is by no means guaranteed to be sick, but lethargy is a common sign of a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Extreme tiredness is often an early sign of parvovirus or other infections. In these cases, it is often paired with other symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, abnormal appetite and sudden weight-loss. Metabolic disorders can also cause tiredness and present with a variety of symptoms. These include changes in appetite, changes in weight, and excessive thirst. There are plenty of other possible medical causes for tiredness in your pup , including anemia, poisoning, and even canine depression. Narrowing down the cause from dozens of potential health issues requires the aid of a vet for proper identification and treatment. As cute and funny as snoring can be every now and again, it can indicate sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening disorder. Sleep apnea is when a dog frequently stops breathing in their sleep and is jolted awake throughout the night. This is as scary as it is dangerous for your pup. Due to their easily obstructed airways, sleep apnea in bulldogs is so common that they are often used as models for it in studies. That said, sleep apnea is preventable in every breed. In humans and dogs alike, the biggest predictors for sleep apnea are obesity and old age. Keeping your bulldog fit can go a long way in saving its health and its sleep. Along with many others, narcolepsy, insomnia, and REM behavior disorders are all conditions your dog could face. Defined simply as a disorder that can make falling and staying asleep difficult, insomnia is a multifaceted condition. Underlying causes such as arthritis pain , nighttime incontinence, and stress are often culprits, but insomnia can be a diagnosis in and of itself. Insomnia often develops in senior dogs and can be the result of diseases such as early Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If your dog is showing signs of insomnia, a vet visit for proper diagnosis is in order. Reason 5: Neurological Conditions Poor sleep may be the result of two major neurological conditions— narcolepsy and REM sleep disorder. As opposed to sleep apnea, narcolepsy is most commonly observed in puppies. Narcolepsy is a genetic disorder that results in abnormal neurological patterns and low production of hypocretin, a hormone responsible for alertness. A narcoleptic dog will fall asleep seemingly out of nowhere, especially when excited. Often, narcolepsy is paired with another disorder known as cataplexy, which is the temporary paralysis of your dog. Narcolepsy is an incurable and life-long condition, but is neither dangerous nor uncomfortable for your pup in most circumstances. Even so, if you suspect your dog has narcolepsy, you should speak to your veterinarian for further information. REM behavior disorders have a less understood cause than narcolepsy and can develop at any age. All dogs let out a sleep-woof or twitch at times, but REM sleep disorders are visibly more extreme than this and far more likely to disrupt sleep. Below is an example of a dog with a REM movement disorder. If you were constantly running in your sleep, you would be exhausted too! REM sleep disorders may not be entirely curable, but prescribed medicine from your vet such as clonazepam can do wonders in reducing symptoms. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to help your dog get enough shut-eye. Set a Schedule Dogs may have adjusted their sleep schedules to match ours somewhat, but at the end of the day there are some key differences between the sleep of us and our canine friends. Dogs have polyphasic sleep, meaning their sleep is split up throughout the day. Usually, the best way to do this for everyone involved is for you to have a set bedtime as well. Humans have a pretty elastic sleep cycle. Giving your dog a comfortable environment before it goes to sleep is important to ensure quality of sleep and avoid interruptions. Environmental cues such as location or events can easily shape biological functions for our canine friends. Giving your bulldog a designated bed and area to sleep in may help signal to your dog that sleep time has begun. For bulldogs, overheating is an uncomfortable and disruptive possibility. Keeping them in a cool but not cold! One way to ensure they sleep at the correct temperature is to get them a specific bed. An elevated bed such as this or a dog bed with cooling gel like this can help keep your pup cool throughout the night. When their environment is dark, a dog produces melatonin to promote sleep. Keeping the room dark before and during sleep is always a good idea. Despite previous theories, this cohabitation rarely disturbed sleep and was therapeutic and psychologically healthy for both parties involved. As a brachycephalic breed, bulldogs are prone to snoring in their sleep , and can certainly slobber quite a bit. Not to mention their moderate shedding can decorate your sheets in an unwanted layer of fur. Thankfully, a protective bed cover for pets, like this great waterproof cover , can help keep your bed clean if you want your pooch to snooze with you. That said, the choice to let your dog sleep with you or not is entirely yours! As long as you can handle the snoring, sleeping with your bulldog in the room may help you both sleep better. Unfortunately, b ulldogs are also prone to heat exhaustion and breathing difficulties , so vigorous exercise is a no-go. Light to moderate exercise with plenty of water and a cool environment can not only keep your bulldog healthy but also improve its sleep! A fully exercised bulldog is a worn-out bulldog, so catching some healthy Zs and getting REM sleep is easy after a workout. Conclusion Dogs sleep a lot throughout the day due to their polyphasic sleeping patterns. Frequent naps throughout the day are to be expected with any dog, and bulldogs are particularly prone to spending much of the day napping. Of course, if your dog is acting strangely or sleeping more out of nowhere, contacting your vet is a good idea. But as long as your bulldog seems happy and healthy, let a sleeping dog lie! Here are step by step instructions to teach your bulldog not to bite. Sit down and play with your bulldog. Let them bite your hand. Your bulldog should be startled, release, and step back. You can spray something bitter in their mouth to further the consequence if your bulldog is not starting to understand after going through steps a few times. An English bulldog looks scary and grumpy but is very calm and amiable. Many people are afraid of the English bulldogs because of their somewhat aggressive appearance, but they are the friendliest of all breeds. They are lovers and not fighters. Bulldogs make wonderful apartment pets and are mainly low-endurance dogs. But all dogs can have the bad habit of biting. An un-socialized adult English bulldog will also nip and bite. Under these circumstances, you should keep your English bulldog away from other dogs and people. It is important to make sure your bulldog learns not to nip and bite as biting will further the stereotype that bulldogs are dangerous, when they are really not dangerous at all when they are loved, trained, and socialized. How to Teach Your English Bulldog Puppy to Not Bite Every English bulldog goes through the puppy stage and learns to interact with others by biting, nipping, and licking. Biting occurs when your puppy is growing and exploring their environment. Your English bulldog puppy may not hurt you intentionally, but as a puppy he is still capable of inflicting harm to you. If this behavior is not rectified and controlled, your puppy can carry this into adulthood. No, And Here's Why! Your puppy might grow up thinking that there is nothing wrong in biting and nipping humans. As their teeth grow and their weight also increases, the harmless biting which you once found cute can turn into rough bites and play. An English bulldog is not aggressive by nature but like other dogs can show aggression if provoked. They are ferociously protective of their owners and others in the family. If they feel their owner or loved ones are threatened, they can turn defensive and show signs of belligerence. English bulldogs are calm and gentle with their owners but are chary of other dogs and strangers. Therefore, it is imperative to socialize your bulldog properly and make them feel safe around other dogs and people. There are chances that if your English bulldog is inadequately socialized, he will react fiercely to what he sees to be a threat to your safety or their own. Your puppy bites because he does not know how to play with humans and needs to be trained to stop biting. You can hire a dog trainer to do that or can do it by yourself. You should train your dog that it is unacceptable to bite and encourage them to play games with toys. Learn more in our article Help! Bulldog Teething and Biting When your English bulldog puppy is 3 to 6 months old, there are chances that your puppy may be teething. At this time your puppy will put virtually everything in his mouth. They do this because they need something to chew on, to alleviate the pain and discomfort. You can give him ice cubes to numb his gums and mitigate the pain. When your puppy is teething, you can also give him things he can chew on. You can give him old washed rags kept in the freezer, hard rubber balls, or nylon bones. When your puppy bites you hard just yell as loudly as you can and pretend to be hurt. This will startle your puppy and ensure that he releases pressure. You must continue this until your puppy starts refraining from nipping and biting. This way your puppy will learn that biting can be a hazard to their friends and humans. They will learn that skin is sensitive and should be only pressed down lightly. Eventually your puppy will become gentler to you during their playtime. When your puppy bites you stop playing with him. Avoid petting, talking and even looking at your puppy. Never show aggression or give physical punishment to the puppy while training him. He will become defensive and grow up to be more aggressive. Remember to praise your puppy for good behavior. Socialize your English bulldog puppy to be more comfortable around strangers also. Socializing will help stop your puppy biting your feet and the feet of visitors. You can walk your puppy to dog parks and public places. You can also visit your family and friends with your English bulldog puppy to help him develop trust with them. English bulldog puppies easily get excited with movements. So, if your puppy sees you moving your feet or any sudden movement, he will swoop into attack. Stop right there and this will make your puppy settle down. When puppies see children running around, they also want to run and play with everybody else and could bite their feet. Use dog commands like Sit, Stay, and Down. Always keep treats in handy while training your puppy to motivate him. If this does not work, then simply walk away. To discipline your adult bulldog, you must leave him alone. Still, if your dog persists to bite, you can seek professional help to curb his habit of biting and nipping. Lastly, do not try to put your adult English bulldog into situations he is not very comfortable in or those which will provoke him. If you know your dog does not like other dogs, keep him away from those dogs. You can also use a spray bottle to spray something with a bitter taste into their mouth when your bulldog bites. I have seen people use lemon juice. Be aware that excessive lemon juice will cause an upset stomach and possibly diarrhea for dogs, so find something else with a bitter taste that is safe for dogs to teach them a negative consequence for biting. The bite force of the English bulldog is pounds per square inch psi. Psi shows us how much pressure is exerted on one square inch of space. This is enough to cut muscles and break bones. English bulldogs have extremely strong jaws and muscular and sturdy bodies. English bulldogs also have a very low center of gravity and can easily take you down. They were bred specially to fight the bulls. Their powerful jaws can cause a lot of damage. With appropriate training and by acting properly around your puppy, you can help him grow out of his habit of biting. Training your adult English bulldog will take some time. Training an adult English bulldog will be relatively difficult, but it is not impossible. So, be patient and try to build up this new behavior with trust and love. Persistence and hard work will go a long way. You will surely see results and all your efforts will yield a very obedient and loving companion for life. Pup pup hooray! Post Views: 2, But bulldogs are still dogs and they have the innate tendency to bite. However, if left unchecked, this seemingly cute behavior can turn into a problem when they get older as he could hurt you or the people around you when they bite. Furparents need to address their biting behavior early on so that they can grow into well-behaved adult dogs. When he accidentally bites you, you have to react accordingly. The way you respond will be crucial as it will tell your puppy if that is an acceptable or unacceptable behavior. Exaggerate if you need to. Your bulldog would stop biting you because he would be startled with your reaction. As they say, Bulldogs are lovers not fighters. Ignore him after he bites you. Wanting nothing more than to please you and get your attention, he would learn that what he did was unacceptable and he would try not to do it again. Be consistent with your response each time he does this but stay calm when training him to stop biting. The key to getting your bulldog puppy to stop biting is through ignoring him. By giving him the cold treatment when he bites you, you are promoting bite inhibition. Your pup may be feeling uncomfortable and might be in pain because of his condition. You can give him ice cubes as these will help numb his gums from the pain. Another way to teach your pup not to bite is by praising him when he stops biting. Remember, bulldogs aim to please you and will bask in your praises and affection so these are good motivators for your desired behavior. You can use the ignore method or praise method. Pretend To Be Injured Whenever your English bulldog puppy biting and growling at you, pretend to be injured by his bites. When the puppy bites, you yell loudly and pretend like you are hurt a lot. This will shock your puppy, and he will release the hurt immediately. You can continue doing this until he retrains himself from biting you or growling at you. By repeatedly exercising, your puppy will learn that it is hazardous to bite their friends and humans. As time passes, your puppy will learn to become gentle during playtime and get to know that skin is a sensitive part and must not be pressed. Avoid Your Puppy If your puppy bites you while you are playing with him, stop playing at that very moment. When you stop playing immediately, he will realize that he has done something bad. We were playing on the couch, and he bit me. After repeating this every time he bit me, he finally understood that biting is bad. What will happen is he will suddenly become defensive and will become aggressive in the future. These small things are very important and must be kept in mind while training your puppy. Never forget to praise him for his good behavior. Socialize Your Puppy Socialization is very important for the English bulldog puppy to get comfortable with everyone. These etiquettes are necessary, especially when you take your puppy to parks and public places. Save Yourself from Puppy Attacks Puppies are very curious about everything happening around them. They get excited when they see some movements happening around them. You may have noticed your puppy walking moving around your feet whenever you walk around them. If they see any sudden movements, they will immediately attack. When this happens, stop right there and let your puppy settle down. When the puppies watch the children running around, they get very excited and start running and playing. There are chances that your puppy may bite the kids or anyone they are playing with. To avoid this, whenever you see your puppy come running towards you, give him his chewy toy to play with. Never forget to motivate your puppy by giving him his favorite treats. Always keep the treats in your hand while training. When I was training my puppy, I used to have these soft puppy treats all the time. These were his favorite treats, and due to them, he used to perform all the tasks that I gave. Everyone must follow one more important thing , all these exercises, and recommendations in the house. When you play with your dog or take your dog outdoors frequently, it becomes easy for the dog to expend energy and will likely lead to them being less aggressive. Whenever the dog is unhappy or afraid due to someone invading its territory, the likelihood of a bite is on the higher side. You have to look out for body language. If you notice these signs, it is better to give your dog some space, and separate them from any strangers, human or otherwise. It is also helpful to talk to them sweetly and try and alleviate those fears by comforting them. Show your dog who is boss At the end of the day, you are the pack leader, and your dog needs to know that. When your bulldog recognizes that you are the alpha dog in this relationship, he or she will respect you better and will follow your rules. Sometimes the best way to do this is to isolate them for a short time, to show them your displeasure. This is only effective if it is done immediately after the wrong behavior, so that they associate that behavior with this punishment. Opt for professional training Another way is to opt for professional obedience training. But, we do recommend that owners attend some of these classes, as you might learn some tricks as well! Consult a vet If your dog is persistently aggressive, and is not showing signs of improvement, you might consider taking them to the vet. Aggression is a symptom of a lot of diseases and ailments that your English bulldog could be suffering from. Be patient Training takes time, and you need to give your dog and yourself the benefit of the doubt. You have to let your dog absorb things and understand what behaviors are good and what are bad. Perhaps the easiest way to teach your puppy bite inhibition is to allow him to interact with siblings. During play, if one puppy bites the other, the one who was bitten will walk yelp and end the play. That way, your puppy will learn that biting will spoil the fun. In addition, when his playmates bite him, he also gets to learn that nipping hurts. After all, Bulldog puppy teeth can be sharp. This discovery will teach your puppy to stop biting or to bite with moderation. Later on, he will stop completely. This is why it is advisable to adopt a dog after 8 weeks, since they have spent enough time with their litter to know basic socialization. If Teething Causes Him to Bite, Provide Teething Toys Puppies tend to mouth almost anything they come across because that is how they learn new things. Additionally, young pups also experience teething. This is when the gums begin to hurt. Pups are often born without teeth. Their teeth show up at 2 to 8 weeks, while their adult teeth show up at 4 to 7 months. So, during teething, they may want to chew on things to ease their pain. In that case, offer your Bulldog puppy suitable toys. They can include puzzle toys filled with delicious treats such as peanut butter. Once he has a toy to play with and chew on, he will be less interested in biting you or his siblings. You will be well on your way to ending all the biting you have had to deal with. Be sure to carry biting toys with you everywhere so that they are always available during playtime when your bulldog puppy is restless. They do bite sometimes when playing. He will soon learn that biting you causes playtime to come to stop. In addition, he will understand that you do not like it when he bites you. Allow your Bulldog puppy to remain seated before you continue with playtime. Each time your puppy bites, repeat the same reaction until he no longer bites. Briefly ending playtime is one sure way to ensure that he stops any unwanted behavior such as biting because he will want to continue interacting with everyone. Bulldogs are known to be loyal and loving to their human parents. If your Bulldog puppy likes to chew on bedding or shoes, a bitter spray will stop this behavior. You can easily find such a spray at your local pet store. This spray is unpleasant to the taste but will not cause harm to your bulldog puppy. Supervise Your Bulldog Puppy Around Other Pets and People Biting will only come to an end if you apply measures such as supervising your pet when around other pets. Although your pup may learn not to bite you, there is no guarantee he will remain well behaved around other pets. Biting is unacceptable behavior and socialization makes a lot of sense because it will help your puppy behave around other animals. With good supervision every time, you will keep an eye on everything your puppy does when with other pets. Supervision allows you to discourage your pet from biting cats and other dogs. Try to keep all interaction positive. Do not allow his favorite toys around the areas he is playing with other pets. He might become jealous when he sees other plays with his toys. When other people visit or spend time with your puppy, let them know the rules so they can react properly in the face of puppy biting. Final Word Bulldog puppies are cute little pets. We feel the same way even when they chew, nibble or bite. However, if you allow him to bite others all the time, it might become a habit that he will carry into adulthood. This behavior needs to be checked while your pet is still young. If you are a pet parent who is wondering, when will my English bulldog puppy stop biting, the best thing to do is use the tips we have listed so that biting can end as soon as possible. Dogs , Puppy training Alex Andes Puppy Biting: What's Normal, What's Not, and How to Curb It One of the most common issues we see poor dog training advice given for is puppy biting and mouthiness, so we're going to give you the most standardized professional advice possible for this issue. There's a reason why it's discouraged for non-professionals to give legal or medical advice to strangers on the Internet. At best, their advice could be wrong; at worst, it could it be potentially dangerous. We so wish the same rules applied to dog training advice. Puppies go through at least two fear periods in their first year of life, so when those sensitive puppy brains are involved, it's especially important to follow professional instruction! They go through an uncomfortable teething process that lasts for months. They play hard with their siblings, often using their teeth to successfully instigate play and attention. Herding breed dogs are predisposed to nip, herd, and chase small, fast-moving things. Young children often get the brunt of this behavior. Retrievers are predisposed to picking up and holding anything and everything within reach, including your hands and arms. A word on what to avoid: Above all else, avoid physical punishment when it comes to puppy biting. I have heard people given terrible albeit, well-meaning advice over the years, from squeezing your puppy's mouth shut, to pinning them on their backs, to muzzling them to stop the biting. Physical punishments like this range from silly and ineffective to cruel and downright abusive. In fact, you can create fear and aggression in your dog using these types of methods. So, what should you do about puppy biting? When you bring a puppy into your home, it's your job to create fair, consistent boundaries for unwanted behaviors, including when it comes to teeth on skin. Note: You are not putting your puppy in a time out. That involves way too much time, talking, and attention to be an effective punishment. You are either ignoring the behavior or removing yourself from it. That means play is over, fun is over, attention is over. Be as non-dramatic as possible. If the behavior is hard for you to ignore, go behind a door or baby gate where your puppy does not have access to continue nipping at you. If your puppy tries to nip at you when you return, remove yourself again. You should see a major decrease in the intensity of biting as well as the amount of biting attempts within a few days. An Important Caveat: Some puppies find the act of a person walking away reinforcing. If your puppy seems to enjoy you removing yourself as a game of chase, you can alternatively use the side of your leg not your knee, please! You may have to block them multiple times before they stop trying; don't give up! And most importantly, still avoid yelling or using your hands — bitey puppies tend to find both of these things very exciting. Remember, it's normal for young puppies to explore the world with their mouths. Things to keep in mind: Be sure to give your pup attention and praise when they are behaving nicely! All family members and guests MUST be consistent in order for this to work! Be aware that even doing everything right, this behavior may not go away entirely until months of age. Remember, this is a normal developmental period in puppies. For extra-bitey puppies, or those that are biting after months of age, this blog will help give you some additional tips and recommendations. Why Does This Work? A behavior that doesn't get reinforced will stop. Your pup will learn that we don't react to biting with play, attention, or even a negative reaction. All of these things can be fun for a puppy. Your pup will learn to self-entertain. Once they realize the nipping isn't working, they will eventually redirect themselves onto something else. Your puppy will seek out appropriate ways to get your attention, like offering a "sit" or laying at your feet. A few other suggestions: It's also important to have a management place for your puppy, such as a play pen or baby-gated bathroom. It gives you a break from your puppy, and is a calm place for your puppy to settle down if he gets too wound up. Make sure your puppy has plenty of rubbery teething toys, is getting daily exercise, and is not excessively crated. If his needs are not being met, the nipping will take longer to extinguish. Make sure your puppy is eating three meals a day. Things we may think are punishing, like pushing your puppy away, yelling at him, etc, can be considered fun, play-like behaviors for your puppy and can encourage biting. When doing the above exercise, be as quiet and calm as you can. When should you be concerned about biting in puppies? You should seek out a certified professional if your puppy: Is growling, snapping, or biting when a person comes near a resource. Food, toys, etc Stiffens and stares at the person before biting. Is consistently biting and breaking skin. Barks, growls, or nips not in play at new people entering the home. Snaps or growls at children. What if it's not getting better? Remember, we do not expect this behavior to go away entirely until at least months of age. We also need to take into consideration a dog's breed, social history, and any medical conditions that could be contributing. For example, if a puppy has an intestinal parasite that's depleting their nutritional stores, we often see an uptick in biting. For extra guidance with extremely bitey puppies, or those that are still regularly biting after 6 months of age, check out these additional tips. Unfortunately, Facebook is such an important social media platform that we can't just tell Facebook to sod off and go somewhere else. There really isn't anywhere else that is comparable. But there ARE solutions. Disclaimer—Post at Your Own Risk Before we get into any of the real marketing topics, I want to talk about selling puppies on Facebook since most of us have been hit so hard by them lately. First, I want to make it clear that: Facebook is in charge, not me. So they can do whatever they want despite what I say here. They can change their policies. They can delete whatever they want despite their policies. Nothing I say here is a guarantee. This is my opinion only. If you take action based on what I say here please know I can't be responsible. Please see 1 as to why. Ok, the real info now. The truth of the matter is that you CAN still advertise puppies on Facebook. However, there are restrictions. There are also animal rights extremists reporting pages and posts, so even if you are following the rules you may get reported and you MUST challenge the report and succeed to avoid Facebook jail or deletions. Or in Facebook page shops or Instagram shops. Facebook will often automatically change your post to a Marketplace post if they think you are selling something. Do NOT click to post if they do this. You will get dinged! Not allowed: "Content that attempts to sell live animals between private individuals. This is where most people get reported. As of this writing, Facebook states on their reporting policy that animal sales are NOT allowed between individuals but ARE allowed by "businesses that sell other animals from a storefront or website. Facebook DOES allow animal sales if posted by a business. However, Facebook itself gets to decide if you are in fact a legitimate business. So it may be more than just having a business page. This is where things get vague and sketchy and where you have to decide your own level or risk tolerance. The more you appear like a legit business, the less likely you will be to have problems. But you also need to make sure that you actually are legit--they can and do check on these things. What I've done that allows me to so far advertise puppies on Facebook on my business page and in paid boosts and ads without problems is to: Include in my page name that I'm an LLC Have an established presence. This includes an established website, a Google Business listing, Google reviews, Facebook reviews, and everything else you can think of that will back up the fact that you are a legitimate business. Have my Facebook business page verified. They gave me a really hard time, but my business is legit and I kept at it. If you aren't legit, you may not want to try this because if they decide you are NOT a legit business they could give you some trouble. If you have a business line that is a land line registered to your business, they sometimes verify just by calling that number. I only use a cell, so this wasn't an option for me. Here is a list of documents Facebook will accept for verification. They initially refused me time and time again. I went through about half a dozen rounds with them. I supplied them with the documents they asked for and kept getting rejected for some reason. But I kept at it and finally after weeks of this they Verified me. They were sure to tell me they could change their minds any time they wanted, but, hey, at this point I'll take what I can get. To veryify your page you must include a phone number and address. So far, people seem to be able to use their personal page to SHARE posts that are made on business pages. But never, never, ever, post about puppies from a personal profile. It's too much like Social Media Russian Roulette. Good luck and Godspeed! Again, remember this is al at your own risk. Facebook is a scary place for anyone working with animals these days! Breeds The link has been copied! Few dogs are as intelligent and loyal as German Shepherds. With its athletic build and remarkable drive, this working breed makes excellent companions, herding dogs, police K-9s, and therapy animals. How much does a German Shepherd cost? The price of a German Shepherd puppy can vary a lot from one breeder to another. German Shepherds are active and need plenty of stimulation. Flea and tick preventatives are a must-have. You might face additional costs such as pet insurance, training classes, boarding fees, or dog walkers. Puppies tend to cost more due to the high demand. However, professional breeders charge a lot more. Professional breeders usually conduct health testing for the parents. Elbow and hip dysplasia and degenerative myelopathy are the two main tests to look for when adopting a GSD puppy. Prenatal care for the mother can be expensive. These costs can include bloodwork, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Most breeders raise the puppies for the first eight to 12 weeks. They provide nutrition, a living space, socialization, and sometimes early training. Puppies typically receive veterinary care, including a first round of booster shots and a deworming treatment. Colors German Shepherds can come in a few different colors. Black and tan and black and cream are the most common GSD colors. However, there are rarer colors, like black and silver, sable, or black. These colors meet the official breed standards, and a puppy with an unusual color can be worth more. Bloodline and Purity One of the key factors that influences the cost of a GSD puppy is the parents and their pedigrees. A breeder will look at how well the parents match the AKC breed standards. Both parents should be the right height and color. They should have a muscular morphology and the proper head shape. Breeders who are able to trace the ancestry of a litter over several generations and document that all the ancestors are purebred GSDs will charge more. You should also expect to pay more if a breeder can provide health testing information over several generations. Titles are another important factor. Show dogs can receive V, VA, or VA1 titles if they do well at an event and judges determine they meet all the standards of the breed. An IGP3 title indicates that a dog can protect its owner. Parents with IGP or IPO titles produce puppies that are worth more since breeders consider these animals to have excellent potential for training. A breeder who has an excellent reputation and many positive online reviews will attract more prospective dog owners and can afford to charge more. You can protect your dog with a microchip, but there are other steps you can take. The Fi GPS tracking dog collar helps you keep your dog safe. The design is highly resistant and waterproof for durability, and the collar comes with a battery that lasts three months. You can track your pet anywhere and locate them easily if they get lost. There are a few things you should know about this working breed. Personality of the German Shepherd German Shepherds are fiercely loyal. They make excellent guard dogs thanks to their protective instincts. They also make amazing pets who will give you lots of affection. GSDs are reliable and hardworking dogs who thrive if you constantly give them new tasks and challenges. These dogs are extremely versatile. German Shepherds have amazing potential and tend to do extremely well in training thanks to their drive and intelligence. However, they require consistent training and handling since they can be mouthy, chase prey, or become overprotective without the right training. Size and Weight German Shepherds are medium to large dogs. When it comes to weight, a healthy male will weigh 66 to 88 lbs. Lifestyle and Activity Levels German Shepherds are a working breed. Their origin dates back to the 19th century when dog breeder Max Von Stephanitz developed a new dog by breeding different herding dogs. Like all shepherds, GSDs have a strong need to stay active. Due to their athletic build, these dogs need at least two hours of exercise every day. Going for walks might not be sufficient. Your GSD will thrive if you provide plenty of opportunities to use their athletic abilities, including jumping, swimming, or running. Approximate Lifetime Care Costs The total cost of owning a German Shepherd is difficult to estimate since every animal is different. German Shepherds can be expensive. Here are a few tips to help you lower the cost. Look for a breeder who cares about the animals and who does health testing on the parents, but everything else is extra. The typical lifespan of a GSD is 7 to 10 years. Other Potential Expenses Owning a dog is already comparable to parenthood. German Shepherds, much like any other dog breed, have other needs that go beyond food, water, and shelter. Your dog will be watched over, fed, and socialized with other dogs. Grooming Services: For your GSD to have a well-maintained coat and appearance, you should take them to a professional grooming salon. They will be cleaned, trimmed, and pampered as they deserve. Emergency Treatment: Dogs grow up so fast. As your German Shepherd puppy gets older, they are more prone to health issues like hip dysplasia. Sudden injuries can also happen that will require immediate medical attention and treatment. This will allow them to join various dog shows and other competitions. The price of a German Shepherd puppy does vary, depending on her age, color, bloodline, litter size, location, as well as breeding cost. German Shepherds obtained from animal shelters and rescue organizations are relatively inexpensive because they charge only enough to cover their costs. Here are the 5 most prominent factors that will affect the price of a German Shepherd: 1. Age Age is the most important factor in determining the price of a German Shepherd Dog. All in all, it has a lot to do with the desirability of a cuddly puppy. Puppies that are only weeks old will cost the most. It is because this marks the beginning of the most precious moments of a puppy. The demand drives up the price. The price of German Shepherd puppies of 12 weeks or older will start to decrease. Adult German Shepherds will be offered at much lower prices because some people see them as less desirable. Another reason is that the new owner may need to set a budget for health issues related to senior dogs. Coat Color Some colors are more expensive than others. For German Shepherds, colors such as white will cost more than the usual black and tan. This is because these rare coat colors are more difficult to breed. Bloodline Although purebred German Shepherds puppies are the most sought-after ones, mixed-breed pups usually cost much less and have the potential to be healthier than many purebreds. In general, German Shepherds have working lines and show lines, totaling five different variations. We will get into them later in this article. Litter size It refers to the number of puppies in a litter. Usually, the more the number of puppies in a litter, the cheaper the price will become. Location The location from where you purchase your German Shepherd can actually affect how much you pay. Areas with a lower cost of living, or places where there is less demand will typically charge lower prices than more populated cities. Certain states or cities may even have more regulations on breeding which may increase the cost, thus the price of a German Shepherd pup. And these all come at a cost for the breeders. What are the different variations of the German Shepherd bloodline and their prices? While the German Shepherd is a dog breed of its own, you may probably stumble upon different variations. Purebred German Shepherds come in many different sizes, colors, coloration patterns, and body styles. In general, German Shepherds are divided into working lines and show lines, totaling five different variations. Here is a four-minute video from which you can learn about their variations: 1. They have a distinctive angulation with their back legs shorter than their front legs, thinner bones, and significantly smaller heads. They come in quite a few colors, mostly solid with occasional bi-color variations, including black and tan saddle, solid back, solid white, and saddle sable. But their obedient and playful character make them fantastic pets. There are certain measurement minimums for their hips and elbows. This results in a stunning, very specific, and uniform appearance. These dogs have a very strong, pronounced build with a black and tan saddle, and solid back. They make good house protectors and need a lot of exercises and to be trained frequently. These dogs are very social. So they are perfect for families with kids. This is the line of GSD you would normally see in movies. They are also closest to the original breed that was bred and developed by Max von Stephanitz, who is acknowledged as the father of German Shepherd Dogs. With a stable temperament, they excel in working jobs, and also make awesome family pets. Rigid control of the original DDR breed prevents the gene poll from diluting. They must be free from any history of hip dysplasia, among other health conditions, to be able to reproduce. This resulted in a very distinct look — with large heads, large bones, and a shiny dark coat. The Czech further tightened the breeding standards, resulting in arguably the most intense breed of German Shepherd available to date. But they are extremely loyal and obedient, with a pleasant temperament. They could be the best guard dog to protect people. But they are extremely rare nowadays. Other factors that affect the cost of a German Shepherd A puppy whose parents and often grandparents and other relatives are hunting champions has the potential to excel in these areas as well. And it will cost you more than any puppy who is the offspring of just average parents. And the most expensive German Shepherds are those adults with proven records as show dogs, K9, or breeding dogs. What is a reasonable price for a German Shepherd puppy? Reputable breeders, when pricing their German Shepherd puppies, must factor in the cost of breeding, feeding, raising, and caring for the pups as well as their mother. If your breeder had not run these genetic tests on your dog—or if you adopt a German Shepherd from a rescue or shelter, you can run the Embark Dog DNA Test using a simple saliva test you can perform at home. Dogs with CLAD, type III typically exhibit symptoms such as recurrent ear infections, skin infections, pneumonia, and other respiratory infections. Dogs with DM first lose coordination in their hind legs, then they lose muscle mass and eventually the ability to walk. It is caused by a lack of one of the proteins needed for blood to clot properly. Dogs with hemophilia A will often suffer from uncontrolled bleeding, most commonly into the joints. Uric acid is a waste product that is normally eliminated from the body through the kidneys. When the kidneys are not able to remove enough uric acid, it builds up in the blood and can cause health problems. Dogs with hyperuricosuria are at risk for developing bladder stones, kidney stones, and other health problems. P-glycoprotein is involved in the transport of drugs and other molecules across cell membranes. Drugs that are known to cause adverse reactions in MDR1 dogs include digoxin, ivermectin, loperamide, and milbemycin. There are several different types of MPS, each caused by a deficiency in a specific enzyme needed to break down mucopolysaccharides. It is caused by a genetic mutation that impairs the ability of the blood to clot properly. This can lead to frequent and sometimes severe bleeding events which can be difficult to control, even with the help of medications. Dogs with this condition are at an increased risk for bleeding and may require lifelong monitoring and medical management. Symptoms include weight loss, decreased appetite, vomiting, and increased water consumption. Affected dogs have problems with the development of their skin, hair, nails, and teeth. They may also have problems with sweating and the function of their tears and salivary glands. Dogs with this disorder usually have a very thin coat of hair, often with areas that are bald or have very thin hair. Their skin may be dry and cracked, and they may develop sores on their skin. Nails may be abnormally shaped or missing altogether, and teeth may be missing or poorly developed. Dogs with X-linked ectodermal dysplasia often experience overheating. Attend a sanctioned dog show and talk with breeders and competitors for recommendations. Ask your veterinarian for recommendations regarding reputable breeders. Check the Facebook page of the breeder and read through the comments. Remember, however, that comments can be deleted by the page owner. The breeder should be happy to share the name and contact information for customers. Ask questions. Lots of questions. The breeder should be glad to share the test results from the health tests and screenings and should be happy to let you meet at least the mother if not the sire as well of the German Shepherd Dog puppies. Ask how often the dogs are bred. Ask to tour the kennels. Are they well maintained? Do the dogs look healthy? Beware of operations that will not let you tour the kennels and breeders that want to meet you in a parking lot to hand over the puppy. Be prepared for questions. The breeder should ask YOU questions as well; be suspicious if the breeder has no questions about your past history with pets, your living situation, etc. The breeder should want to know how much experience you have with herding breeds, what your training plans are and your plans for exercising the dog. Ask if the breeder will take the German Shepherd puppy—or adult dog—back if necessary. Ask for a contract. If medical problems are diagnosed, the breeder should readily take the pup back and provide a full refund. German Shepherd breeders may adopt out of the area but, nonetheless, you will want to go to the breeder to meet the parents, view the kennels and bring home your puppy in person. This will add to your expenses—but breeders that transport a puppy by air are putting the dog at risk. If you want to buy a German Shepherd Dog from an online breeder, please think again. There are numerous scams; people spend thousands of dollars for a dog and never receive a puppy. AKC warns potential pet parents to be wary of any seller asking for payment by Venmo, in gift cards or as a wire transfer. Dogs purchased from puppy mills can mean years of heartache and expensive veterinary care—and perpetuation of a cruel industry. The pros of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder: You may be able to select a puppy—including a choice of gender. A reputable breeder will be passionate about German Shepherds and will a resource for years to come. The cons of purchasing from a German Shepherd breeder You will pay far more for a cattle dog from a breeder than a rescue or shelter. If you find a breeder who has German Shepherd puppies for sale at prices much lower than you are seeing from other breeders, you must suspect you are dealing with a backyard breeder who has not done health screening, with an online seller who is operating a puppy mill or with someone who is running a scam. You will need to wait until puppies are available. You will need to do your own due diligence to select a reputable breeder. German Shepherd Dogs in rescues are far less expensive that those at a breeder. Puppies under a year old will be the most costly. This group provides funding to a network of GSD rescues — they do not have dogs themselves for adoption. They have a list of affiliated rescues that can help located adoptable GSDs in your region. A breed rescue is, like the name suggests, a pet rescue that is specifically for one breed of dog. These are generally small non-profit groups that operate through a foster system of volunteers who love the breed. German Shepherd rescues specialize in German Shepherds of all ages; some have primarily purebred German Shepherds while others may also have adoptable Belgian Malinois and Dutch Shepherds. How to Find Breed Rescues Along with the list mentioned above, many breed rescues list their adoptable dogs on large adoption sites such as:. If a breeder tries to tell you that his puppies are healthy because their parents never had any issues — do not believe him! It is impossible to diagnose e. Where can you find cheap German Shepherd Dogs? The question is — do you want to purchase a dog with questionable health and temperament? These dogs often are not purebred German Shepherd puppies, but are mixed with e. Labradors, Pitbulls or Golden Retrievers. If you end up with a dog with genetically based health conditions however, be prepared to spend a multiple of the original purchase price on vet costs! Temperament and behavior While a lot of good manners can be taught through consistent training, temperament is genetic to a certain level. When you buy an extra cheap German Shepherd puppy, you not only get a dog with questionable health, but also with unpredictable temperament! Even aggression can be genetic and can be passed on from the mom and dad to the offspring. You can save yourself a lot of time, nerves and money spent on future behavioral training by getting a well-bred and more expensive dog. What is the most expensive type of German Shepherd? Like in many dog breeds, certain rare German Shepherd colors are much more expensive than the most common colors and patterns. It is much more important that your puppy has a sound temperament and fits in well with your family and lifestyle than that he has a certain rare look. These dogs are mutts German Shepherds mixed with Miniature Poodles, Shelties or other smaller breeds. Once more, be certain to not decide on your future dog based on looks alone. A stable temperament and good health is much more integral than a certain size or weight. Working lines vs show lines The German Shepherd was originally bred as a working dog. Since his original use as a shepherd dog however, he has filled many different roles — from guarding properties over being used in the show ring to participating in Schutzhund and IPO trails. Depending on which lines your German Shepherd Dog comes from, the prices can vary a lot! Show line German Shepherds are the dogs that are bred for conformation shows. These are the type of dogs you should decide on if you would like a shepherd puppy as a pet and companion animal. If you are interested in using your German Shepherd as a protection dog and to participate in IPO trials, you should pick one from working lines. There are a lot of highly successful working line breeders both in North America and Europe. For this price, you get an absolutely flawless dog with extensive skills and perfect obedience. Some US dog owners interested in Schutzhund choose to import a puppy from old European working lines. While this might sound insanely high for a pet dog owner, for Schutzhund enthusiasts it is a typical price for a pedigreed German Shepherd pup. How much does it cost a month to own a German Shepherd? They are beautiful and healthy. Our first one is almost 5 years old and we have a 2 month old. Lindy breeds them in a very clean home. She is extremely loving to these newborns and is open to all of our questions. She even follows up to see how they are doing. I would not buy from anyone else. Our 2 labradoodles get plenty of compliments. We have added 2 beautiful members to our family. I waited almost a year for mine and he has been life changing. They are truly amazing, healthy, loyal, and smart dogs! I have trained him and he is now a service dog and has been the greatest companion to me as well. Lindy always responded and kept me in the loop during the entire process. Before I met her I had a nightmare situation with a breeder that was a scam so was very skeptical but she made me feel at ease about everything. Thank you for everything Lindy! Nathan Kirton I ended up finding a puppy from someone else that fit my timeline better. The communication I had with her Lindy was amazing. She was super helpful, and gave me so much information about what I could expect. Thanks for being super helpful Lindy! We waited over a year and it was so worth it! Lindy was instrumental in our family getting the dog of our dreams. She was extremely helpful in asking and answering questions to ensure we got a right match for our family. She took into consideration all of my preferential factors such as the gender, coat color, personality, etc. The cherry on top was upon pick up at 8 weeks Teddy was healthy, socialized, potty trained, and vaccinated. Lindy pours love onto these dogs and puppies and treats her clients with tremendous respect. The puppies are happy and safely kept in an immaculate environment until sent home and I love that each family is celebrated with a photo to commemorate the occasion. Definitely worth the WAIT! Chuck Hahn Best dog ever!!! Worth the wait. He came home perfect! Testimonials Happy Faces Your happiness is our happiness, your success, our success. We take great pride in each and every home we complete with our dogs. We did tons of research. We wanted a dog that did not shed, was hypoallergenic, and had a good temperament. Those dogs are hard to find! We finally came across a very special Australian Labradoodle. We found our Rosie through my best friend who knew the owner of Australian Labradoodles of Texas. Her temperment is what we were really drawn to. She is so calm, obedient, and really wants to please you. She rings a bell when she needs to go outside and walks right next to you on her leash! We feel so lucky that we get to call her ours! To say that Miles has changed our lives for the better would be an extreme understatement! From the moment we set our eyes on him in your videos, we knew he was special, and he has shown us that a million times over. He is a sweet and affectionate dog who loves his family fiercely, acting protective when he needs to, yet demonstrates such a docile and gentle temperament to other people, especially small children who love to pet and squeeze his fluffiness. I had no intention of adding another dog to the mix! After several weeks, I finally pulled the trigger and we brought him home! Charley Brown was the perfect addition to our family and I would recommend these pups to anyone looking for a good family dog. All of our puppies come with Socialization.
Town and country cut Short cut You will also have to bear in mind that some of these cuts will be much shorter. If you live in a cold climate or a hot climate, ensure you have the right protection for your dog. Our article on dressing dogs for winter shows you how to do this in an appropriate way. Lion cut The lion cut is probably the best known and most extravagant of all the poodle haircuts. The dog's limbs are hairless, with only a pompom around the front and back paws. The tail should be rounded off and the chest, stomach and head should be left with hair. It is the most widely used haircut in competitions and dog shows where is is also known as the Continental cut. The lion cut's elaborate style makes it impressive, but also takes a lot of time and effort not to mention experience to get right. There are other cuts on dogs called the lion cut, such as one for the Shih Tzu , but they will look different according to the specific breed. Image: National Geographic 2. English saddle cut The English cut is very similar to the lion cut. The difference lies in an additional pompom on the hind legs, and the pelvic area being left at the same length as the chest. It still shares the long ears and tightly wound curls on the body. Both are considered some of the most popular Poodle haircuts among groomers. Image: poodleforum 3. Dutch cut The Dutch cut is one of the most popular in dog contests and expositions. Unlike previous styles, this one is for those who are looking for a uniform style with no differences in length of the dog's coat. It's notable above all for the tail ending in a cute pompom. Image: poodleforum 4. Modern cut The modern cut for poodles is probably the most suitable for owners who love following recent trends and enjoy watching canine beauty competitions. This is also known as the Scandinavian cut or European cut in some sectors, especially in the United States of America. It seeks to achieve a careful and professional finish, without being as exaggerated as the aforementioned styles. It is an aesthetic cut, yet at the same time it is very natural. It follows the shape of the body, emphasizing the ears and tail as much as the head. This is a very trendy cut for Miniature Poodles, and it isn't difficult to work out why. This haircut really makes your poodle look like a puppy. This style doesn't aim to achieve a defined or sharp-looking finish. On the contrary, the fur should look natural and fresh. The American Kennel Club claims there should be a pompom on the end of the tail. It is another of the most popular Poodle haircuts. Image: temporary-secretary 6. Summer cut Many dog owners wonder if it's bad to give their dogs a haircut during the summer. Not all dogs should follow the example of the Poodle, which is a breed that adapts perfectly to different haircuts and styles. Summer is a hot period that makes your beloved poodle get dirtier than usual - especially if you take it to the beach or go for a walk in the woods. Therefore, giving it a summer cut is a good idea: You will help to keep it cool while achieving some interesting aesthetic finishes, as shown below. Winter Poodle cuts tend to leave more hair on the dog to help insulate them from the cold. Image: poodleforum. Cupcake cut This haircut is not very well known, possibly because some people think it provides a strange look once it is done. The cupcake cut is notable for leaving the ears absolutely rounded as a result of being thoroughly styled. Not all styles will involve Poodle face cuts to be so dramatic, but we think it is quite stylish. This Poodle cut is also notable for the shape of its head - which ends in a point - which bears a clear resemblance to a delicious muffin. Image: huxtablethepoodle. Teddy bear cut The teddy bear cut is increasingly popular among long-haired dog breeds. This finish must be done with scissors, and it requires hands with experience in styling poodles. The hair should be left mid-length so that the poodle's curls can be seen clearly. This gives a sweet and rounded finish which makes it look like a bear, as the name suggests. Make sure you know how often to bathe a poodle in order for their fur to look gorgeous at all times. Image: yiral 9. This style can work for any type of Poodle, but is particularly common with Standard or Miniature Poodles. Its defining feature is that it leaves the legs hairy and cylinder-shaped. The body hair, on the other hand, is cut shorter, which accentuates the density of the leg hairs. The head and ears have a rounded finish. Image: najupets .Short cut While it's not very common to see a short-haired poodle, it remains an aesthetic option that will avoid knots, tangles and dirt building up in its coat. This Poodle cut may be a good option in warmer countries. It is also a good option for those who can't go to the dog stylist as often as they would like to. This style can work just as well on a Toy Poodle as it will a Standard Poodle. However, you will need to bear in mind that it may cause the dog to become cold. Either avoid this cut in cold climates or winter months. If you still prefer a shorter cut, ensure you have a doggie jacket for them to stay protected. Image: notastandardpoodle-gregg. The problem is there is no standardized style guide for cutting a Poodle's hair. In different countries, regions and even individual dog groomers , there is debate over the correct name for some of the terms. This can understandably cause confusion for groomers. Clients may come in with a specific idea of how they want their Poodle cut, but are unable to explain the style to the groomer. The best thing for you to do is to decide on what you want before hand and locate a picture of the Poodle cut you want. You can even take this article with you and decide which type of haircut will best work for your dog. Relying on the name of a certain Poodle cut may cause confusion or frustration, so it is best to be on the safe side. Send us a photo of your dog! Do not forget to share your poodle's haircut in the comments so that others can get inspired. Thank you for visiting AnimalWised! Having such unique and versatile fur means there are countless poodle haircuts for you to choose from, and a professional groomer can give your poodle a makeover with a hairstyle that best matches her personality and lifestyle. With so many options available, learn how your poodle can look like anything from a plush toy to elegant royalty! Teddy Bear Cut The teddy bear cut is a popular trim for poodles and other long-haired breeds. With this look, your poodle has longer hair on her face for a soft, rounded "teddy bear" appearance, and the rest of the fur on her body is cut at a shorter, uniform length throughout. Talk about cuddly cuteness! Summer Cut Because poodles have a single coat, they can enjoy the luxury that comes with it: the summer cut. Known as one of the most low-maintenance poodle haircuts, the summer cut is a practical haircut option that keeps your poodle's fur short so she stays comfortable in hot weather. So if you're looking to cut your hair to beat the heat in the summer, you and your poodle can rock shorter hairdos together! Puppy Cut No matter your poodle's age, you can seemingly turn back time with the puppy cut. Also a popular choice among poodle parents, the puppy cut is a simple, natural-looking trim that leaves your dog with an evenly cut length, typically 1 to 2 inches, all over. This is a highly modifiable look, so consult your groomer for a length that best fits your and your dog's preference and lifestyle. Continental Cut The continental cut is a glamorous and traditional hairstyle often worn by poodle show dogs. With this look, your poodle's face, throat, feet, and part of the tail are shaved. This look is characterized by full hair on the rib cage and chest, pom poms of fur on the tail, ankles, and hips, as well as a banded topknot on the head. German Trim Looking for a haircut that looks fancy but not too fancy? The German trim uses the power of angles to give your poodle a sharp profile. The hair on your furry friend's legs is left long, while the hair on the body and ears is cut short. This is a great option not only if your poodle is more active but also if your pup is prone to ear infections or ear matting. Modern Cut The modern cut is an elegant hairstyle that combines aesthetics with your poodle's natural features. This cut keeps the hair on the body short, accentuating your poodle's shape. The fur on the head, ears, and tail is left longer to create a fluffy appearance. When your dog has such curly, coarse locks, you may wonder how many trips to the groomer you and your poodle may be making. Poodles and poodle-crosses also go through a coat change in the first year of life, so they need to be groomed more often," says Danna Alexander, owner of Prestige Dog Grooming School. To keep mats and tangles at bay, it's best to brush your poodle at least two to three times a week. Toy poodle haircuts aren't off limits for miniature and standard poodles, just as standard poodle haircuts aren't off limits for miniature and toy poodles. While any poodle can sport any style, there may be common options you'd like to choose from. Because there are various names for different types of poodle haircuts, make sure to bring your groomer a photo of the haircut you'd love your pooch to have. Was this page helpful? This will be good practice for later on — for both of you! Yes, haircuts are essential for Poodles. Their thick, long, curly coats are prone to tangling and trapping debris. When will my Poodle puppy need haircuts? Then, at around four months old, they will shed their puppy coats and start to grow out their rougher adult coats. Frequency As a general rule, Poodles should have their coats clipped every weeks once their adult coats grow out, whatever your desired length. This is because they grow so quickly and can become matted just as fast! What equipment should I use? There are three main types of dog grooming scissors; straight scissors, curved scissors, and thinning shears, and they all perform slightly differently. Straight grooming scissors are a multi-task tool, they have straight blades for general, basic grooming, creating straight lines in the coat, and adding the finishing touches to haircuts. Curved dog grooming shear has a curved blade that can be used to fine-tune and shape specific areas of the coat, such as the paws and hindquarters. Thinning shears have a cutting edge on one blade and teeth on the other, and there are also double thinners that have teeth on both blades. They are designed to remove lots of hair in even sections for a natural finish, and they can also be used to blend out the harsh lines from clippers and texturize the coat. Or, if you just need something for the occasional touch-up between visits to the groomer, a simple pair of electrical motor clippers will do just fine. Electric motor clippers are also good for keeping short coats short. You should also be aware of the types of blades that come with clippers. The higher the number of the blade, the more hair that it will remove. Or, you can get guards that fit a single blade to customize the length, which is a lot more convenient. Start by showing them the equipment and getting them used to the sight and sound of it before you cut any hair. Reward them just for being around it and then try cutting a small section of hair. If they react well, reward them again, and then do another section. Keep rewarding them as you go and again after the haircut is finished. Do it in a well-lit, comfortable part of the home that your pup can stand up in. Once you get them into a routine — keep it up! Work your way down the legs first, then from the neck to the hindquarters, or vice versa, and then the tail. Take care with the feet, underside, and head, shielding their eyes from falling fur. Use long strokes and go from the neck down to the back legs. How to deal with grooming anxiety If your pup is afraid of the scissors or clippers, take it really slowly and try to make it an enjoyable experience. You can do this by breaking up the haircut into smaller sessions to make it less stressful and taking breaks in between each one. Give your dog lots of praise and a reward every time you take a break and ask another family member to comfort them during the haircut. You can start brushing your Poodle from any age. To brush them, simply go in the direction of hair growth using short strokes. Hold the fur at the base with your free hand to remove knots, and use a mat remover for any stubborn mats. Bathing a Poodle puppy As for bathing, you should give your Poodle pup their first proper bath at months old to help them shed their puppy coat, unless they get seriously dirty before that. However, you can give your pup a bath any time after weeks of age to get them used to the sensation, but avoid overbathing them, as this will strip the fur of its natural oils and make it dry and brittle. Once they have their adult coats, your Poodle pup will need a bath once a month. You can even buy shampoo that is designed especially for Poodle coats. To give your Poodle a bath, lather up their wet fur with the shampoo, massage it in, leave it for as long as directed on the bottle, and rinse thoroughly. Follow up with conditioner if necessary. What is an "original" Australian Labradoodle? The Australian Labradoodle is different from all other labradoodles. Dogs from this cross typically were bred to each other over future generations, whereby the Australian dogs are also know as "Multi-generational" Labradoodles. The resulting labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. The Australian Labradoodle Club of America was founded exclusively to foster and protect the original Australian Labradoodles that have come directly from Tegan Park and Rutland Manor breeding stock, or their offspring. Our mission is to maintain and improve the quality and soundness of the Australian Labradoodles, and to carefully monitor the further development of the breed. french bulldog puppies near me cheap - There are so many that you could really go crazy when it comes to choosing one. But in this article we are going to focus on a very special color. Not only because it is beautiful, but also because it is very difficult to find in poodle breeders. It is the red toy poodle. How is a red toy poodle bred? What is the role of genetics to get the red color in a poodle? What price can these dogs reach? Since in Las Almenas we are dedicated to the responsible breeding of purebred dogs, we can answer these and other questions about the red toy poodle. Characteristics of the red toy poodle This is the newest developed color of the poodles. The red toy poodle became an official color in , when it was included in the IFC standard as reddish fawn. The red toy poodle is a particularly striking dog and, due to the rarity of its genetics, has become one of the most coveted dogs. Fortunately, there are breeders specialized in breeding the red toy poodle, such as Las Almenas. If you are considering buying a red toy poodle puppy, you have to keep in mind that this color can fade with age. Yes, the color can change from a strong red to an apricot-orange color as the dog gets older. The apricot poodle is a very similar color and is sometimes confused with the red toy poodle. The word apricot comes from apricot in English and this is precisely the color that best defines these coats. Both the red toy poodle and the apricot not only share the same color, but both are the result of a recessive gene. The coat of the red toy poodle should be uniform and can range from pale fawn to reddish fawn or even orange fawn apricot. As for the color of the eyelids, nose, lips, mucous membranes, palate, natural orifices, scrotum and pads, these should be well pigmented and as dark as possible. In fact, a depigmented nose is considered a severe lack, as well as the lack of color on its edges. The eyes of the poodle should always be as dark as possible, dark brown almost black in all colors of poodles, except the brown which may have slightly lighter eyes. As a general rule, the fur of black, gray and white poodles is dark or black, in the brown color it is dark brown and in the red and apricot toy poodle it can be one or the other color. As for the coat, whatever its color, it is characterized by being curly with a soft texture. The poodle has no undercoat, so it is one of the dog breeds that shed the least hair and does not shed, which is why the poodle is grouped among the hypoallergenic dogs. Simply put, each dog receives one color gene from the father and one from the mother. Although both genes are present, only one will ultimately be expressed. This is because the dominant gene overcomes the recessive gene and becomes the finally expressed gene. But how do you get the red color of the poodle if this is a recessive gene? As we say, to get a red or apricot toy poodle it is necessary that the dog has two recessive genes present. The red toy poodle was developed from the apricot line, hence some can be as light as apricot poodles. But dark colors of red, such as mahogany, are also common. Thus, to obtain a red toy poodle of intense color, homogeneous and without gradients, it is appropriate to cross two intense red specimens, although it can also be obtained with the apricot cross. In the case of the apricot poodle, its orange color should be as uniform as possible, although in general it lightens a little and there is a color gradient in the body. It is possible that it is born black due to a genetic component of the sable color, but then it will be apricot at the base. To get this color, it is best to cross two parents as orange as possible or that one of them is a red poodle. Color changes of the red toy poodle Red poodles, like apricots, can undergo many color changes as the dog grows. It is important to note that occasionally they are born a very bright red and then lighten over time. Although, in most cases, they are born dark and by the time they reach a year or 18 months of age they lighten. Some of these red toy poodle puppies remain lighter, while in other cases, the color darkens again as they age. When a red poodle lightens, the color will usually become a sort of apricot poodle. Since these color changes can occur during the puppy stage, it is a good idea to see and meet the parents before you buy or adopt your red toy poodle. This will give you a clear idea of what color your puppy will be when it grows up and becomes an adult. Although the color of the red toy poodle may fade or change over time, it is sure to remain a beautiful color. Neither the red toy poodle is particularly shy nor the brown poodle is more mischievous than the rest of the breed. You already know that what marks the temperament of a dog are several factors, such as the education and training it receives. There may be a certain connection between his health and certain coat color patterns. This is the case with lack of pigmentation. Poodles spotted with the particolor or harlequin gene bring with them defects such as deafness or blindness. In short, to be sure that it is a purebred poodle, its color, whatever it is, should always be uniform. Care of the red toy poodle Like the rest of its breed, the red toy poodle requires certain care to ensure that it is, above all, a healthy dog that grows and lives happily. One of the main cares is precisely the brushing of its red coat. Since poodles do not shed hair, you will have to brush it if you want to avoid tangles and, at the same time, keep the coat healthy and cared for. On the other hand, you should be aware of the tartar they may have on their teeth and avoid possible infections in the ears by cutting the hairs that are in them. If you want to know more details about the care of this breed, we recommend that you take a look at our Complete Guide to the Poodle. Where to buy a red toy poodle As we have already mentioned, the red toy poodle is a very appreciated and desired dog in Spain. Liver points are acceptable, but not preferred in red poodles. Red poodles are a stunningly beautiful color, one that is very close to the color of humans with natural red hair. Poodles come in the light red new copper color to the darkest of any human with dark auburn hair. Ilse Konig was the first person who developed the red color of poodles. It was first developed on the Standard Poodle, then crossed with an Apricot female miniature Poodle. After many years of selective breeding, we now have Red Poodles in all the poodle sizes. While developing the red color, it was imperative to breed for all the qualities of a well-bred poodle, which includes temperament, health, conformation, and beauty. Missing any one of these characteristics the red poodles would not be complete! Typically, red poodle puppies are born quite red, then, when they are about 6 weeks old, their coats will turn less red. Then at about 10 weeks, you can see a definite dark red line next to the skin where the new coat color is coming in. It is thrilling to see this in a red poodle puppy. Their mature red color changes cannot be predicted by the color of the puppy. Some dark apricot poodles will stay a brighter color than the red poodles. The Poodle breed is a breed that does change color, as do some other breeds. Do be aware that red poodles can fade, it is common for these breeds to lighten up as they age. Each dog is an individual and will change. This is not to say that the mature red coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. Red Poodles, and poodles in general, tend to lead lively energetic lives. Red poodles are extremely loyal companions, making them ideal pets. They love to learn tricks and will perform for audiences of enthusiastic onlookers and their red color stands out above the rest! We are a small breeder of exceptional companion, multi-generational Australian Labradoodle Puppies. We are located in the central Florida area, minutes away from Orlando and very accessible via all of the major central Florida highways. All of our litters are hand raised in our home, never in a kennel. Our puppies are born in our master bedroom or bathroom, where they remain until they are three and a half to four weeks old. During this early period, we begin using puppy culture techniques in order to help raise very confident, well balanced puppies. At just over three weeks, we introduce a designated potty area, which they often begin finding within a couple of days, we also introduce solid foods at this same time initially goats milk, then a few days later we begin adding raw food. Later they are moved into our main living area, where they are exposed many new sounds, sights, textures and experiences in preparation for joining your family. The majority of our parent dogs share a home with one of our incredible guardian families. Virtually all of our guardians have come to us by way of referral from our existing guardian families - we'd like to think that is indicative of a very positive relationship. By implementing our guardian family team, our mom and dad dogs often live as the single pampered pet of their household. This is consistent in maintaining great family dogs - likely one of the reasons that you are considering an Australian labradoodle puppy. Our guardians are very hands on with the shaping of your future puppy, sometimes even assisting during the birthing process and later with weekly visits to their home - this is good for our momma dogs, their families and of course our puppies. Our visits allow our pups weekly car rides from week one, as well as early handling and socialization in a very safe and controlled environment. Our parent dogs are rigorously health tested prior to being considered for breeding and assessed for their temperament. We have been working with most of our lines for over fourteen years and have continued to refine them. When we give consideration to using outside lines, we are very attentive to the same qualities we seek in our parent dogs. While the majority of our litters are medium in size, we do occasionally offer mini doodles as well as standards. We tend to specialize and be known for our red and chocolate labradoodle lines, but also produce a great variety of other colors and patterns. Thank you for visiting our website!
