Featured Products Welcome to the Home of Legacy Farm Goldens The heart of our farm is raising healthy, structurally sound dogs, who are a true best friend and family companion. We are located 20 minutes outside of Richmond, Virginia in rural Goochland County. As a testament to that philosophy, socialization is something we actively engage in to ensure that each of our pups will become a loving part of their family. Although performance, health, and structural soundness of the parents do not guarantee the offspring. The probability of improving and maintaining positive traits in the breed through conscientious breeding is greater. Our dogs are carefully chosen from lines that have been researched for sound temperaments plus hereditary diseases and conditions. All of our parents must conform to the AKC standard for the breed. They have completed heart, eye, elbow, and hip exams. We are also completing DNA screening and working with other lines that have been DNA screened to help ensure pups are not affected by genetic conditions common to our breed. This allows our puppies' new families to be confident that their pup's health has been built upon continued high documented standards. Availability of puppies and conditions of sale are at the sole discretion of the individual breeder. You are not obligated to purchase a puppy from the breeders whose names you obtain from GRCA puppy referral. Our english golden retriever puppies are raised in our home with us, their parents, aunts, cousins and sisters. Although we do not use crates as a general rule ourselves, many Shadymist puppy families and friends do with great success. We agree that crate use is highly recommended for at least the first few months as it aids in house-training, prevents boredom destruction, maintains a safe environment for the puppy from curiosity mishaps, as well as a peaceful place to nap with a toy and a blanket. Your English Cream Golden Retriever puppy is raised from birth to your home within our home with constant love, attention and interactive stimulation, all of which promote a healthy, stable people-loving personality with good basic manners!

Merle Pure White A lot of people are arguing that the purely white German Shepherd is a crossbreed while others are labeling them as Albinos and some are even saying white GSDs can be healthy purebreds. Apart from whether or not purely white GSDs exist as crossbreeds and possibly as purebreds, Albinism is definitely a possibility. Solid Gray Unlike sable or the black and silver GSD, the solid gray German Shepherd does not exist in the show or even the working line world. In the show ring, solid gray is considered to be a serious fault. Many people make the mistake to refer to their sable or silver GSD as gray though, so be aware of that. Liver Liver-colored dogs are often seen with a pink nose. This brownish coat color is moving somewhere along the lines of the tan, red, and cream shades. Solid red As the word suggests, this coat type is not black and red but a fully red German Shepherd instead. Isabella types can be very light and might just be a ploy to disguise a white or even albinistic dog. These colors are extremely unusual among German Shepherds and not commonly seen and not desirable either in most cases. Spotted Black and White Another major pet website that features what seems to be a different breed under this color type. There is no spotted black and white German Shepherd in the sense that this color type implies. Australian Kelpies do have this beautiful coat color though. Black and white GSDs, some mixed with brown, as well as sable patterns with the resemblance to a Panda. Merle The merle gene does not exist among German Shepherd lines in a natural form. German Shepherd Coat Types All these colors come in various coat types. Depending on your climate, you might opt for the shorter or longer version. A double coat is typical and consists of a dense outer coat and a softer undercoat. While the breed is generally easy to maintain, weekly brushing is required. Shedding season can be a disaster for some dog owners, especially those with long-haired German Shepherds. A proper diet, exercise, etc. Let me know what color your German Shepherd has or what you think is the most beautiful color on GSDs in the comments. Post navigation. According to the German Shepherd Dog Club of America the coat color may vary although strong rich colors are preferred. Pale, washed-out off-colors and blues or livers are serious faults. A white dog must be disqualified. These colors make Show Line German Shepherds truly stand out. Good balanced diet, daily NuVet, addition of carrots and Salmon oil benefit the Genetics. Many times when we are in public we are asked what breed our dogs are and when we say that they are "German Shepherd Dogs", people are surprised and say, "Wow! But they are so red! We are amazed by all the scientific research that is done in breeding and continue to learn! In a classic German Shepherd genetic table - black is a recessive gene and to produce a solid black puppy BOTH parents must carry a black gene. Owners of Solid Black dogs are extremely proud of the color of their dog and many call it "rare", as not always you can produce a Solid Black dog. Solid Black puppies are born completely black and have no tan anywhere on their body. Small patches of white can be present at birth on chest or on the paws , but they will disappear as puppy grows. It is an off-color as far as the breed standard goes and is a highly undesirable color. The darker - the better and when you see the "RED", you know it. We also see more "Black and Tan" dogs being short-stock. This is a serious fault. There are actually three variations of a blue German Shepherd Dog as they come in blue and tan, blue and sable, or blue and black. The nose of a liver GSD is brown leather as well. This is an off-color and is a fault as far a breed standard goes. Image from the web - SABLE The sable is classic pattern of a GSD and is described by gray coat that looks very similar to the coat you would expect to see on the wolf. Even with a sable, you can see variances in the color of the pigment. Sometimes you will hear people say they own a red sable. Sometimes you will hear them say that they own a gray. So you can find black sables, tan sables silver sables or red sables. This is how much the coat of a sable can vary. This is major fault as far as breed standard goes and a white dog will be disqualified from a show ring. Image from the web BI-COLOR The bi-color is a classic pattern when the saddle part of the dog covers most of the body leaving markings on the feet and sometimes on the face like having eyebrows. Image from the web Below this text is a popular image that is circulating on the web. Many off-color breeders are using it as a proof that their dogs are German Shepherd dogs of AKC recognized "rare" color. Even so, we here at Vom Geliebten Haus, go by the German Shepherd Breed standard and only respect the desired colors of the German Shepherd Dog, that include: black, tan and red. These colors can be present in any of the standard patterns: solid, bi-color, blanket back, sable and saddle. The coat color may vary although strong rich colors are preferred. Image from the web. Sable White Though all these colors are standard for this dog breed, not all of them are widely bred. Breeders choose to avoid colors such as liver, white and blue, despite being standard colors. So, if you have your heart set on one of the ones I just mentioned, then you may need to spend extra time searching for a reputable breeder. But even with this common color, there is plenty of room for variation. The tan fur can range from deeper hues to a shade that almost approaches silver along the edges. The black color usually appears as a saddle-like pattern along the back and can vary quite a bit in size. Something to keep in mind is that GSDs born with this pattern usually begin life with a darker shade and slowly lighten as they mature. Darker, especially black, coloration is recessive in the German Shepherd. So if both the parents display the black and tan coloring, then the pup is more likely to as well. Sable German Shepherd via Instagram: konathesablegsd The most common color seen in the German Shepherd breed is the sand color. As a matter of fact, this opens the door for quite a few color combinations. While other colors of this breed are largely defined by single colors, or bicolor ratios, sable dogs are a bit more homogenous. That is, the coloring is more even throughout without distinct areas of one color or another. Within this coloring, the shades can range from lighter greys to darker colors, such as more grey or shades approaching red and brown. If you were to look at any single hair of a German Shepherd with this coloring, you might notice that their hair can have two to three colors on each strand. As such, they are much more popular in the work line or as pets. They are especially popular in the K-9 units of a police force. Bicolor German Shepherd via Instagram: asulkancrew At first glance, this may seem like a variation of the black and tan German Shepherd. And there is some debate about whether bicolor German Shepherds are simply displaying a pattern or a distinct color on its own. A bicolor German Shepherd will have black and tan colors, but the black with be much more dominant here. Almost the entire body will be black, with only a few areas such as the legs or chest displaying fur that ranges from tan to brown. At birth, the two-tone German Shepherd will be hard to distinguish from its solid black siblings. In fact, it may take months to start seeing changes. However, an indicator of whether the puppy will grow up to be a bicolor dog is if it has some brown color under the tail. Black German Shepherd via Instagram: trublueaussiedogz The gene for a black coat is recessive in German Shepherds, so an entirely black dog will be somewhat hard to find. Black GSDs might actually have a bit of brown fur on their toes or feet, and even some hints of white on their chest. While less common than other colorations, a black German Shepherd is by no means rare. There will be some breeders that hike up the price based solely on the idea that these dogs are rare or special. And while, yes, they are absolutely beautiful and worth taking home, just be sure the price is fair and do some market research beforehand. The white GSD is downright gorgeous. The white coloring really gives the dog a wolf-like look and lends it an air of mystery. They may often get confused for an athletic, slimmed-down Samoyed, but their poise and calmness begs to differ. Plenty of people, The Smart Canine included, see this coloring as one of the more desirable for a German Shepherd. And, in any case, the AKC does allow them to be registered, but simply not as a show dog. For most owners, this is fine because who really has the time to show their dogs? Biology and evolution did well here by pairing these two genes. Liver-colored German Shepherds tend to range from lighter browns to darker and warmer colors. And in some cases, even bordering on red. The coat can also have hints of other colors in it, smoothly blending in with the brown, here and there. There are three variations of the liver coloring: liver and tan, liver and white, and solid liver. The good news is that all three of these are recognized by the American Kennel Club. Blue German Shepherd via Instagram: titanbluegsd Contrary to what some people say, blue coloring in a German Shepherd is not an indication of fault and or poor health unlike blue French Bulldogs. The reasoning for this belief could be due to the fact that blue coloring might indicate temperament or health problems in other breeds. For example, some blue dogs may have hormone or skin issues. We call this condition, Color Dilution Alopecia. However with the German Shepherd, this is definitely not the case. Plenty of breeders purposely breed for this color because of its rarity. Coming from a recessive gene, blue coloration does not occur often without specifically being bred for it. While you might not have too hard a time finding a blue German Shepherd nowadays, be prepared to dig deeper in your pockets. Their scarcity can push up the price and will vary from breeder to breeder. In a way, the coat pattern of the red and black German Shepherd looks almost like a brindle or merle. The black is not limited to those areas of the body — it depends on the dog and the parents. Most of the time, color distribution may vary from dog to dog. However, they will typically have a silver base on the bottom of their body and black on the top half on their body. The hue of black can range from a dark gray to a deep black. In some instances, the German Shepherd may have silver with multiple shades of black on the coat. Instead of the metallic-like silver coloring, the black and cream has an off-white cream color. However, this cream color can vary from dog to dog, but usually has a hint of yellow to it. It really depends. If you like how it looks, whether white, dark, or blue, then you should choose accordingly. Unfortunately, white German Shepherds will be out of the picture, despite its aesthetic appeal. Either way, coloration in a German Shepherd covers a wide range of options, and each of them are simply just colors. No single color indicates better health, temperament, skills or anything like that. Which is your favorite German Shepherd color? And which one do you own? Let us know in the comments section below! These dogs most often have the typical saddle pattern on their coats, where their back is mostly black, while their underside, legs, chest, and face are dominated by a pale shade of cream. The personality or temperament of a dog is unaffected by the color of its coat. The intelligence, loyalty, protectiveness, and all the other traits that make German Shepherds great for first-time owners are just as present in the black-and-cream variation. German Shepherd The German Shepherd is a popular breed that is known for its loyalty and intelligence. The breed originated in Germany, where it was used as a working dog on farms and in law enforcement. German Shepherds are large dogs, with males averaging about 30 inches tall and females averaging about 28 inches tall. They have a muscular build and a thick coat of fur that can be either black, brown, or tan in color. German Shepherds are intelligent and easy to train, making them excellent pets for families with children. They are also loyal and protective, making them good guard dogs. However, German Shepherds can be aggressive if not properly trained, so it is important to socialize them from an early age. This is due to the fact that these two breeds are very different in size and therefore can't mate naturally. The process of breeding them would involve artificial insemination, which is complicated and expensive. When making a hybrid between two different dog breeds, it is important to consider the size difference. In general, the female should be of the larger breed, as she needs to have the capacity to carry the litter. This is particularly important when there is a noticeable size difference between the two breeds, as is the case with a Chihuahua and a German Shepherd. The German Shepherd is typically nearly twice the size of a Chihuahua, meaning that the Chihuahua simply doesn't have the ability to carry a litter of German Shepherd hybrids. As a result, breeders need to be sure to use a German Shepherd female when creating this particular mix. The German Shepherd Chihuahua mix is not recognized by the A. Shep-Chi Appearance The resulting offspring will inherit a random selection of characteristics from both parents. This means that it is impossible to predict exactly how a Chihuahua German Shepherd mix will look. However, there are some general trends that can be observed in most cases. For instance, a German shepherd Chihuahua mix will typically be larger than a pure Chihuahua but way bigger than a German shepherd. German Shepherd Chihuahua mixes are a mix of two very different-looking breeds, so they can take on the physical characteristics of either parent. They can have short or long coats that are either straight or wavy. They can be any color, but the most common colors are black and tan, black and white, chocolate and white, or blue and tan. Shepchi dogs are usually between 8 and 60 pounds, and they stand 8 to 26 inches tall at the shoulder. They have long faces with triangular ears, and their tails can be long or short. They are very loyal and protective of their family and make great guard dogs. They are also intelligent and easily trained. However, they can be very stubborn and willful at times. They need firm, consistent training and socialization from an early age to prevent behavioral problems from developing. The Chihuahua German Shepherd mix is a versatile dog that can do well in a variety of homes, as long as adequate exercise and training are provided. A post shared by Dogs Humans Luv dogshumansluv Shep-Chi and other pets When it comes to getting along with other pets, it really depends on the individual dog's personality. Some Chihuahua German Shepherd mixes are very social and enjoy being around other animals, while others may be more aloof or even aggressive. Generally speaking, however, Chihuahua German Shepherd mixes tend to get along well with other animals if they are introduced and socialized from a young age. When you get your buddy home for the first time, you may have to ensure that they know who is boss. Their beady eyes and upright ears open up their faces so that you can see absolutely everything they may be feeling — or thinking. All they need is a little bit of training and enough time to cuddle up in your lap throughout the day. Just be sure to keep them warm, and their mood will remain as pleasant as when they woke. The German Shepherd This typical herding dog is ever-popular thanks to its trainability, friendliness, and desire to serve. They are ferociously loyal and will do everything in their power to protect you and your kin. They adore being the main worker and helping get things done. So, whenever you see your dog being a bit too playful, you may want to consider giving them a job to do. German Shepherds are relatively protective and territorial. Most importantly, they will need a consistent pattern and training to become beautifully behaved big boys or girls. The Temperament of the German Shepherd The German Shepherd , as it is usually known, can be described as loyal, intelligent, and courageous. The mood of this kind of dog is entirely predictable as they tend only to want a handful of things. The temperament of the German Shepherd is quite an easy one to manage but may be best for experienced owners. They can become quite protective but will be good with bigger families and families that have a lot of love and energy to share. The German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix: 8 Factors to Consider As you can tell, the parent breeds of this specific mix are two of the most interesting for various reasons. Still, they are exceptionally similar in terms of adaptability, barking, etc. These two breeds together have created something mysterious and exceptionally worthwhile. The History of the German Shepherd Chihuahua Since the AKC does not officially recognize this breed, there is no clear and authenticated history for this breed. The Nature of the German Shepherd Chihuahua Since there are no standard regulations and breeders have been free to do as they please, your German Shepherd Chihuahua can become just about anything it wants to and anything you nurture it to become. There is no standard for their overall nature, so as you read this, remember that each German Chihuahua is unique. Socialization Getting your new German Shepherd Chihuahua acclimated into its new world will require lots of patience and even more consistency and routine. They may become more like their Chihuahua counterparts, who are relatively more reserved around new people while still being open to new environments. Although, in this case, perseverance is key. A busy German Shepherd Chihuahua mix will quickly and gracefully adapt to any new environment. Either way, getting people accustomed to this breed should be a breeze. The only concern is their unpredictability with children. Especially since both species will react with minimal control. They will be an average-sized dog, somewhere between what is normal for both breeds. The Chihuahua genetics will ensure that your pupper has a thin first layer; this will give them an easy to care for coat. There are some genetic issues that you may or may not have to deal with. Some issues are relatively easy to avoid with a healthy diet and good lifestyle habits like regular exercise and vet check-ups. The Chihuahua is usually prone to heart conditions like patent ductus arteriosus or mitral valve disease. While things like epilepsy are hard to diagnose before it happens, you can send your pupper for check-ups at the vet and screening tests. So, a cardiac exam, an eye test, and so on will help you plan for any future issues that may arise. You can expect things similar to most dogs with hip dysplasia, arthritis, and even degenerative myelopathy. This can take the form of CBD supplements like drops or tinctures to help with the pain. More on the Health of the German Shepherd Chihuahua The German Shepherd Chihuahua mix will most probably have a mixture of problems from both parent breeds. Most commonly, you can expect issues from their joints, knees, and their heart. Since the Chihuahua is prone to Patella Luxation , you can expect it quite difficult to allow your pup to jump from high places. Getting off the bed may be a bit difficult, and so will climbing up onto the couches. You can help alleviate their heart issues by ensuring they have a healthy balanced diet. A special diet with heart-healthy vitamins may delay the onset of heart issues and can ultimately help them live fuller lives. You may also want to consider adding supplements to their diet to help with their joints and bones. Exercise Regime for German Shepherd Chihuahua As you may have guessed, there is no set number for the required exercise. This is because the German Shepherd is a pretty big and busy dog with lots of energy. A rule of thumb is to cap them off at around 30 to 45 minutes daily. Start your pup off by going on a five-minute walk. Start with five minutes and incrementally increase their exercise time until you can gauge just how much walking and playing your canine friend can take. Be sure not to over-exert them, as their bodies are not always made to become the next Rocky Balboa. They can eat a bit too much too fast, so also try to monitor their eating. Are you ready to pay exorbitant prices for a dog? Are you buying from a reputable breeder? There are pros and cons to each, but as you may be very well aware, adopting serves the greater good of the pups themselves. You can get into contact with any nearby shelter, rescue center, or specific German Shepherd or Chihuahua rescue centers. Adopting a new pup may be more rewarding for you but could require more of your time and attention, depending on where you get your dog from. Adopted dogs always need just a little bit more TLC than most. Cons of owning a German Shepherd Chihuahua They can be extremely loud. They may be riddled with health issues when older. They are incredibly protective and loyal. They also make excellent cuddle buddies. On their own, the German Shepherd is great for a family, especially with kids. Although, the Chihuahua does not always enjoy being around busier families, especially with kids. So as you can imagine, there is no chance to guess how your pupper may react. For this reason, it may be best to just leave them in the apartment with adults and smaller, less traditional-style families. But, the German Shepherd Chihuahua would not enjoy a family with younger kids as their bodies, limbs, and hearts are a little bit more fragile than most. They need a certain amount of exercise and stimulation to keep them happy. Your neighbors may begin to complain if your pupper keeps yapping all day or decides to bark incessantly at the wind moving the curtains. This may make apartment living a little bit more of an extreme sport, especially for introverts. But, as long as your German Shepherd Chihuahua mix is happily occupied with toys or treats. How long do German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix dogs live? You can expect around years with your German Shepherd Chihuahua mix. Thanks to their mixed breed genetics, they are supposedly more likely to live longer. Remember; in their older years, this dog may suffer from some terrible conditions that may put a strain on yourself, your budget, and your heartstrings. But, for an experienced pet owner, they are a whole baguette-sized roll of fun and would sufficiently fill that pup-shaped hole in your heart. Owning a dog is not like owning a handbag; you have to be sure of your decision before getting that beauty from the pound. Have a look at a few other dog breeds available before you set your mind on the first one you see. I covered all of the costs associated with writing this post on the german shepherd chihuahua mix dog. However, it does contain affiliate links. That means if you click through on some of the links in this article and end up making a purchase I may receive a small commission. Just wanted to let you know. She is dog mad and dog aunt to Clover in London and Poppy in Sydney. But what happens when you combine small and sassy with big and tough? And what kind of pet does this mix really make? Because this animal is a mixed breed, the results are highly variable. The puppy could look more like a German Shepherd , a Chihuahua or anywhere in between. And the same can be said for their personality! This is a relatively new mixed breed. But the German Shepherd and Chihuahua have distant origins that may bring insight into what traits these dogs could have after being bred together. The modern German Shepherd breed dates all the way back to a single German dog by the name of Horand von Grafrath. After numerous failed attempts to standardize Shepherd breeds in Germany. Horand was then selectively bred with three other dogs, whose offspring were inbred to preserve desirable and necessary traits within the breed. It is clear that Chihuahuas have origins in Mexico. Genetic testing has revealed that much of the pre-European genes are no longer present due to European colonization. But there is still a great deal of speculation on the true origins of the Chihuahua. Controversy On Crossbred Dogs Crossbreeding dogs can become a touchy topic because there is some controversy around the quality of their offspring. Some believe that a quality dog comes from a pedigree, while others think that crossbreeding is better for the offspring. Purebred dogs typically have limited genes due to a genetic bottleneck created by extensive inbreeding. After all, if you want a dog to have a particular set of traits, you are going to breed very similar dogs together. This can lead to severe health problems typical for the specific breed. Genetic disorders and vulnerabilities become more common. Crossbred dogs are typically much healthier due to hybrid vigor , or heterosis, a much more diverse and less bottlenecked gene pool. Larger than a Chihuahua but smaller than a German Shepherd, this mix can be a small to medium dog. But, of course, other patterns and fur colors are possible too. These dogs will likely have short hair, which sheds lightly. But they could also have slightly longer fur, depending on the coat of their Chihuahua parent. They might have two layers to their coat or one, depending mostly on the Chihuahua parent. Chihuahuas have a soft spot on their heads, like a human baby, that may or may not go away over time. This dog will weigh between eight to 60 pounds. The height of this mixed breed will likely be between seven to 45 inches at the shoulder. However, due to unpredictable genetics from mixed breeds, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix temperament can vary widely. At best, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix can be loyal, attentive, intelligent and a wonderful family pet. At worst, this dog might guard its territory, barking at and attacking anyone and anything nearby. It can be extremely mistrusting with strangers and not very suitable for children. What level of aggression a particular dog has depends on the traits it inherits. Some breeds score higher than average for aggression directed toward humans and dogs e. Personality The local animal control received more than 6, calls. The Chihuahua can also be stubborn, which this mixed breed can inherit. It is essential to interact with both parents if possible to ensure that they are friendly before adopting a puppy. Early socialization can also help curb this aggressive tendency. This breed can be either independent or very cooperative. While they can be very cooperative, both breeds can also be stubborn. Patience is vital to ensuring that training goes well. Luckily though, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix is also intelligent. They can pick up on many commands and train easily—when they want to. For the smaller dogs of this hybrid breed, potty training can be a problem. They have tiny bladders, which means they have to go a lot. This can make training difficult. We recommend studying our potty training guide closely, specifically the one devoted to Chihuahuas. You should also begin crate training early. A German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix can be very attached to his owners. Teaching them how to be alone at a young age is important. Socialization is crucial for this breed. They can be very unsure of strangers. Getting them around many types of people early on is important. You should plan on at least a couple of medium-length walks a day and outdoor playtime if possible. A fenced-in yard can be very helpful to help this breed get the exercise it needs. These dogs can dislocate both their kneecaps and hips easier than others. For this reason, it is always important to keep an eye on them, especially when they are exercising. However, they are still prone to a few health problems, including obesity. The Chihuahua is prone to a disorder known as floating kneecap or patellar luxation. This disorder takes place when the kneecap becomes dislocated. Patellar luxation mainly affects older, smaller dogs. Hip dysplasia is also a concern. German Shepherds are very prone to the latter disease. Ethical breeders should test all German Shepherds before breeding them to ensure that they do not pass on hip problems to their offspring. These dogs are also prone to a few heart problems, including congenital heart defect. This is a severe, genetic disease that puppies are born with. These dogs can live anywhere from nine to 20 years. It just depends on the traits they inherit and if they are prone to any severe diseases. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mixes should not have any extreme grooming requirements. Brushing a few times a week and clipping their nails regularly is all that is required. As a small- to medium-sized dog, a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix is ideal for families living in smaller homes. But it is also vital that they have enough room outside to meet their exercise requirements. German Shepherds make decent family dogs due to their loyalty and territorial tendencies. But they have been known to become hostile to young children. Children have been known to accidentally injuring Chihuahuas due to their size. As a result, this mixed breed can obtain any or all of these qualities. These dogs are not recommended for families with small children. Rescuing a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Rescuing a dog of this particular breed is mostly a game of luck. Because a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix is generally unsure of strangers, it will take them awhile to warm up to you and your home. Patience is key. Finding a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Puppy As stated before, finding this particular breed is going to involve a bit of luck. Locating a breeder dedicated to these dogs will be very difficult. It is vital to avoid puppy mills because of unethical breeding standards. Additionally, avoid getting puppies from a pet store because they will most likely have sourced the puppies from a puppy mill. For a complete guide on finding the right puppy for you, see our complete puppy search guide. They can be aggressive toward strangers and can have guarding tendencies. But, with proper socialization and training, they can be taught to accept strangers into their areas. On top of this, you should keep basic puppy care advice in mind. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Products and Accessories Because these dogs can vary so widely in size, buying products can be complicated. We recommend looking at our guide on Chihuahua toys to get some ideas for your puppy. You should also invest in an excellent leash to make walking less of a chore. Pros and Cons of Getting a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix As stated earlier, mixed breed dogs can inherit any genes from their parents in a random array. This means that they could inherit the best qualities of both parents or the worst. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix dogs can be very aggressive. They are known to guard territory with ferocity, and can generally be hostile animals if not trained or socialized correctly. However, at their best, they can be intelligent, loyal, independent animals that have the sense to serve. If you have small children, we would recommend looking at Labradors or Golden Retrievers. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix Rescues There are no nationally listed rescues dedicated specifically to this mixed breed. However, there are plenty of German Shepherd and Chihuahua rescues all over the U. However, German Shepherd Chihuahua Mixes could still inherit diseases that affect either parent, such as: 1. Patellar luxation Patellar luxation is common among small breeds like the Chihuahua. This disease causes the patella, or kneecap, to dislocate randomly. The condition can be mildly irritating to severely painful, and it can require corrective surgery. It can cause abdominal pain and vomiting, as well as abnormal breathing patterns. The affected dog can have severe trouble moving around, and the condition can lead to paralysis. Degenerative myelopathy is a heredity defect, and it worsens with age. Hydrocephalus Hydrocephalus is the accumulation of excess cerebral fluid in the brain. Baby Chihuahuas have a natural opening in their skulls which sometimes fails to close as they age and allows the cerebral fluid to leak in. The canine may suffer from headaches, seizures, or even mental disabilities. Hip Dysplasia Hip Dysplasia is improper development of the hip joints. The puppy may suffer from arthritis and pain when walking or running. Hip dysplasia is frequent among large canines such as the German Shepherd. Although hybrid pups have a healthier life than their parents, there are so many variables that affect how long a pooch will live. Your puppy needs to learn to listen and obey your commands and to behave around other dogs. The best way to take your German Shepherd Mixed with Chihuahua puppies out is to carry them in a backpack. This practice will prevent them from choking on the leash or getting caught up between your legs. As the pup becomes more confident, you may introduce the leash gradually. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix puppies mature quickly and would need high-quality food to nourish their growing bodies. Go for a dog food specifically designed to meet their nutritional needs. Keep vet visits regular and vaccinate them for various illnesses and viruses during their first few months. Their mix should cost less than both purebred parents. However, their price usually depends on the breeder and how they market these pups. Even though the actual price of this pup should be less than that of the GSD and the Chihuahua, you may find a breeder selling them for a much higher price. So, how can you find these furry pets up for adoption? You can also contact a local shelter. Most people simply search for a canine pal with the best potential to match their lifestyle and personality and go from there. If you want a four-legged friend that matches your taste, consider purchasing from a licensed breeder. Be aware that hybrid dogs are not always easy to get your hands on. German Shepherd Chihuahua Mixes are hard to come by, and due to their rarity, they may command a hefty price tag. However, avoid puppy mills and backyard breeders. Regardless of where you find Chihuahua German Shepherd Mix puppies for sale, you should ensure that the place is reputable before deciding. Most importantly, you should be able to check their living conditions. Is the German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix right for me? The Chihuahua parent tends to be hostile toward other canines. When deciding whether to purchase a German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix, consider the pros and cons. With some work and training, your German Shepherd Chihuahua mix could be a delightful addition to the family. A German Shepherd Chihuahua Mix can be 26 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh about 60 pounds. Can a German Shepherd mate with a Chihuahua? Not naturally, but they can breed together through artificial insemination. What is the smallest German Shepherd mix? The smallest German Shepherd mix is one made by crossing them with Chihuahuas. What is the best breed to mix with a German shepherd? These breeds combine really well with GSDs. This document should help guide your evaluation, and may be printed to take notes initially when talking by phone and later when you meet in person. Buyers should feel free to ask about any subjects of concern to them, and reputable breeders will voluntarily point out potential health risks all lines have some. Guarantees: No matter how carefully bred, risk of disease can never be zero. The best assurance of a healthy puppy lies in selection of the breeder, multiple generations of health certifications, and your preventive health care — and whether a specific health guarantee is offered in the contract is less important. AKC Limited Registration: Companion puppies are usually provided with Limited Registration, which means, among other things, that litters produced by that dog would not be eligible for AKC registration. This is not usually recommended for owners who do not themselves have an interest in competition or breeding, because co-ownerships generally come with strings attached. While it is true that these connections often offer some benefits, they will also include obligations that may continue for several years. Breeders appreciate a call when problems are minor so they can help owners avoid more major concerns, and they often have useful preventive health care tips that can save trips to the vet. Finding a knowledgeable breeder with whom you have good rapport and who wants to spend time teaching you about Goldens is almost as important as the selection of the litter, and such a breeder can be a valuable part of a support system if troubles arise. Finally, committed breeders remain available to assist in finding an appropriate placement for the dog at any time during its life if circumstances change and this becomes necessary. Questions to Ask Breeders Are hip, elbow, eye, and heart certifications for both sire and dam verifiable at www. May I have a copy of it to review in advance? Can you provide references from members of a local Golden club? Are your puppies examined by a veterinarian before they go home? Before the puppy is released to its new home, it is customary that the first set of puppy vaccinations will have been completed, that preliminary worming or negative stool check will have been done, that the vet will have examined the puppy thoroughly, and that any concerns discovered during the examination will be disclosed to the buyer. How do you socialize your puppies? How many litters have you bred, and how many years have you been a breeder? How many litters do you typically have in a year? Can I visit you and meet your dogs? What is the general health and temperament of the sire, dam, and their first degree relatives parents, siblings, and offspring? Temperament concerns e. Skin problems, allergies itchy skin, runny eyes, frequent skin or ear infections, orange stains on toes from licking? Epilepsy or seizures? Lameness or stiffness such as after exercise or upon waking? Below is a sampling. Are you aware that raising a puppy well takes about the same amount of time and energy in the beginning as caring for a 2-year-old toddler? Will someone be home with the puppy for much of the time during the first month? Have you owned a dog before? What breed? What pets do you currently have? What activities or lifestyle would you like to share with your dog? Are you planning to crate your puppy when it cannot be supervised? How many children do you have at home? What are their ages? Are they comfortable around large dogs? Do you have a fenced yard? How do you plan to exercise your Golden each day? Consider contributing to The Golden Retriever Foundation. More Information. See individual litter pricing within the puppy questionnaire form below this section as pricing varies on repeat breedings, health history and titles within the pedigree. Dams or sires with titles, pedigree of generations of health tested dogs, genetic clearances, titled dogs, repeat breedings of successful prior litters and so forth may adjust the price upward. Our dogs are carefully selected for breeding, and with the time, care and emphasis on breeding healthy puppies that all comes at a price to us. Not every dog we select with breeding intentions actually makes the "health cut" to breed. The pricing reflects the increasing costs associated with health testing parents, and generally that is also often reflected in using good, health tested stud dogs. If you applied in previous years and are on our accepted wait list, the pricing listed at that time will be honored, unless a suitable pup of their gender selected was offered from a previous litter and then refused by the buyer. This allows the buyer who wasn't able to receive a pup from a previous litter due to not enough pups being whelped to carry forward their deposit and the price does not increase in the subsequent litter to them. The deposit tax will be added to the final billing as deposits do not need to be taxed prior to the litter whelping, due to the potential for refund if no pups are produced. This also allows time to determine the state sales tax location, if pick-up is in Minnesota or shipping to a different state. Minnesota sales tax for picking up at our location is 6. The remaining amount of the purchase price including applicable sales tax , less any deposit made, is due at the time of pick-up or the pup's age of eight weeks, unless other arrangements are agreed upon in advance. The remaining amount for puppies that will be shipped is due by the pup's age of six 6 weeks in order for Floden Farm to make travel arrangements, purchase crate if necessary, and schedule vet travel certification for those pups that will fly. We accept credit, debit or check payments via Paypal's secure site, or payment by check. If paying check by regular mail, we need time for the check to clear. Cash is also acceptable at pick-up. Shipping Options In-Cabin by Breeder or Puppy Nanny Shipping Option While we prefer our clients to visit us in person, either Jenn, a family member, or close friend of ours could serve as a flight nanny for you, if shipping by air is desired. A crate would not be provided with this option as we can reuse the sherpa bag for in-cabin flights. Please inquire more about this option and we can calculate the estimated cost for puppy's flight fee, veterinary travel certification, round trip travel of the nanny, nanny fee, and overnight stay if needed for our flight nanny. Shipping fees are non-refundable and must be paid before the puppy's sixth week of age in order for Floden Farm to have adequate time to make shipping arrangements for your puppy's delivery. At this time, air cargo shipping options are unavailable due to Covid. Should cargo shipping options become available, we would be able to offer that to our clients as well. When making arrangements, be sure to allow time for going back through security if returning the same day. Oftentimes a family will make their visit a trip, flying or driving into Fargo ND or MSP airport, renting a car from airport to Floden Farm and enjoying a hotel and then returning the next afternoon after pick-up. We're happy to help you with finding hotel recommendations in that case. Meet in Minnesota Ground Transportation If you need us to meet you along I in Minnesota, we are happy to do so if schedule permits. We also work full-time jobs on top of our puppy hobby. We would bill round-trip business mileage in that situation. Spaying or neutering is not required, however any offspring produced are not AKC registerable unless the difference in price is paid to change to Full AKC Registration. Both types of AKC registration allow dogs to participate in AKC venues such as hunt testing, field trialing, agility, obedience, and others. At 7 weeks we temperament test the puppies, begin making puppy picks with each buyer, and vet check them. Preference is given to Full AKC Registration buyers, as their extra pricing helps us provide genetic testing for their preferred gender. We don't place breeders in upper picks alone because of breeding. If a breeder also shows or partakes in a performance venue, higher consideration is given to that breeder because they strive to prove their dogs. That said, we are happy to work with new breeders and provide what knowledge we have learned over the years to help them breed quality puppies. The breeder and stud owner always has top choices of any male or female. This is why we continue to breed - to further each generation. Preference is also given to those who have history of competing in AKC venues that will further our parent dogs to Outstanding Dam or Sire by gaining titles. Next preference to those who intend to compete in AKC venues for the same reason. Pet homes are not cull homes. Purchase a pet because of the litter and parents. A highly active competition home may not be the best fit for a pet puppy that may occasionally hunt. At 8 weeks of age puppies are able to go to their new homes. Credit, debit, Venmo , or check payments accepted via Paypal's secure site. As a member of the GoodDog breeder program, we can also accept payment through GoodDog. Deposits are refundable only in the case there are not enough pups produced or if the breeder deems the last pup available is not a suitable fit for temperament or other reasons, such as a health issue with the pup. If you state you are willing to accept a pup of the opposite gender, your deposit will only be refunded if there are not enough pups produced of either gender to satisfy our commitment. This is because your name is placed on each gender wait list in the order of deposits received and provides you with more option when it comes to selection based on temperament and other factors. Please review our 4-year health warranty and paybacks page prior to committing. Please complete the questionnaire below and Floden Farm will email you once your application is approved, invoice you through PayPal if needed for the deposit, and any questions you have will be answered. We require a non-refundable deposit fee due to prior non-commitments in order to reduce our time accepting applications to serious inquiries. All responses are confidential. Please be certain to review our puppy pricing page prior to submitting this questionnaire. If you still have difficulty submitting the questionnaire, contact us at .Upon receipt, we'll answer any questions you may have by email and invoice you for a puppy deposit. You're welcome to call us with any questions, arrange a visit, or we can set up a quick Zoom meeting as well prior to placing your deposit. I understand that my deposit fee is considered non-refundable, unless not enough pups of my preferred gender or not enough pups are produced -- should there be an issue with a pup at vet check Floden Farm would also give me the option of deposit fee back or to be placed on a future wait list. Deposit fees are not taxed in case of a refund situation. Deposit fees become taxable when a puppy is actually purchased and the fee credited to the cost of the puppy. Minnesota state sales tax is required of all puppy sales. I understand if I am picking puppy up I may visit the full litter about weeks of age and that full puppy payment is due at the puppy's eighth 8th week of age or at pickup, whichever is earliest, unless other arrangements are agreed upon. An energetic puppy may be better suited for a an active hunting home, for example, rather than a house in the cities with a family that walks on occasion. You may also want to take this breed match-up quiz to help you decide if a golden retriever is right for you! The questionnaire below also helps us determine which pup may connect well with which client. This questionnaire also serves as a reminder for the work a new pup or dog entails prior to placing your hard-earned deposit. So please consider these details as you complete this application to be placed on our wait list for puppies or adults. Thank you! Full AKC registrations are a decision that will be made on a case by case basis. Puppy selections are made on the day of puppy pick up. We believe this is a very big step for most puppy-parents, so to be fair we want you to have the opportunity to watch all the puppies as they grow bigger and develop their little personalities. Selecting your puppy at eight weeks will also allow you to better identify size and coloration if that is your preference. You will raise your puppy with the confidence it is recognized by the American Kennel Club as a purebred Golden Retriever. As a consumer, you are spending a lot of money on a puppy and there is great value in knowing your breeder has followed all the criteria needed to fulfill the requirements set forth by AKC. This information will be mailed to your home, usually within weeks. Full AKC Registration is exactly the same as the limited registration, with one difference: should you decide, as your puppy gets older, you want to breed it with another fully registered Golden Retriever, you will be able to register the litters with the American Kennel Club. You have found what seems to be an excellent, qualified purebred breeder, but they tell you that there are no papers. Should you continue with the adoption process? Are papers even necessary? If you are wondering how to buy a Retriever without papers, you need to know the facts. This blog will investigate the necessity of papers and how you can successfully buy a great, purebred Retriever without them. Buying a Retriever without papers is not necessarily a bad thing. However, they can help a Retriever to be a show or breeding canine. Take a good look at the dogs to see if they are healthy, happy and display Retriever trademark features. From there, write up a contract, ask for health certifications, and give the dog a DNA test. What Are Papers For? Either the breeder has them, or they do not. But what exactly are these papers? Well, papers are essentially a dog registration. It acts similar to a human birth certificate. On the documents, you will find the name of the parents and the date the dog was born. These papers typically come from the AKC for a low price. Are Papers Necessary for Adoption? You also need to know whether or not papers are even necessary. Technically, there is not an actual need for papers in this circumstance. So, even if a breeder does provide papers and a pedigree for your Retriever, they might not be entirely correct. So what can a future Retriever owner do? Buying Without Papers At this point, it is fairly clear that papers are not the cure-all for buying a purebred dog with confidence. Luckily, there are some other ways to feel confident in purchasing a dog from a breeder. Here are some of the best ways to buy a Retriever without papers. What are these certifications? If your Retriever puppy comes with an OFA and CERF certification, it proves that the owners took the time to have the mother and father dogs checked for certain hereditary problems. There may also be other certifications to confirm the health of the parents. While this does not necessarily prove that your Retriever is purebred, it will give you confidence that your dog is healthy and in good standing. The certifications do not mean that there is no chance that your dog will have these issues in the future, though, especially considering how common hip dysplasia is with Retrievers. Keep this in mind when shopping around for a Retriever. Not only does this kit provide you with the type of dog you own, but it will also show over 35 different traits to expect from your pup. Thoroughly Check Out the Breeder and Puppies The best way to buy a Retriever without papers confidently is to check out the breeder and puppies thoroughly. Here are some of the top tips to add to your check-off list: Understand and seek out the appearance of the breed. Now, puppies will change dramatically from when they are brand new to adulthood. However, there are still some key features a Retriever may have as a puppy, such as short ears and a straight muzzle. Make sure the puppy has these hallmark features. You want to make sure that the puppy is not coming from a puppy mill and is bred in good conditions. Always visit the home. Never buy online or meet outside of the living area. Find out how well-known the breeders are. Breeders known for providing purebred puppies bred in a healthy, safe, and nice environment should be prominent in the community. This is especially true for show dog breeders. Try and find out as much information on the breeder to help boost your confidence in buying. Meet the parents. Check out the environment and the temperament, especially of the mother. Pay attention to the health, environment, and happiness of the puppies. Sign a contract with the breeder. Every arrangement will be different. For example, if a DNA test is done and it turns out the dog is not purebred, then the breeder will need to accept the return with a full refund. Make sure you have reliable contact info for the breeder. The breeder should have information on the health of the pup. They should have info regarding his vaccination status, spay or neuter, etc. This is entirely false. A higher price tag does not always equate to quality. A lot of puppy mills sell their offspring for thousands of dollars simply because they can. That is why it is important to do your research on the breeder and visit the location. Share this:.

This is not true. They have a large, muscular build They have a fluffy tail Their ears are erect They have a double coat They are heavy shedders They are a solid black color They can be larger They often have a straighter back Their coat can be longer, sometimes with a flowing mane around the rear of the neck , skirting on either side of the body between the front and back legs and feathering long hair on the ears, backs of legs and beneath the tail 3. Black German Shepherd puppies are born black All German Shepherd puppies are either born black, gray or white and can change color as they grow. Their true coat color can usually be determined at about 8 weeks of age. Black German Shepherd puppies are born black and will stay black through adulthood. So, if you are looking for a solid Black German Shepherd puppy, you will want to get her at this age, and not before, in order to be sure she is indeed a solid black color. A German Shepherd that is, say, black and tan, can carry the recessive solid black gene and produce Black German Shepherd puppies. However, both parents must have the recessive gene for solid black to appear in the litter. It can happen. The second way solid Black German Shepherd puppies are produced is by mating two solid blacks. This mix can only produce a solid black litter. The color of this dog does not affect its temperament. The Black German Shepherd is just as loyal, alert, active and intelligent as the standard variety and is not predisposed to aggression. She is often aloof at first, but once you bond with her, she will be your companion for life. Black German Shepherds are also incredibly trainable and are used as police and military dogs, disability aid dogs, and obedience dogs. Look how obedient this month old Black Shepherd puppy is: Just like any German Shepherd, their protective instinct can be strong. These are dogs that were used to herd and protect livestock, and they will do the same with their human pack! In the case of your family coming into danger, have no doubt this dog will defend you. As a companion dog, however, you want her to recognize that not all people are a threat. Make sure you socialize her from a young age so that she gets on well with people in adulthood. They can be pricey Black German Shepherds are quite rare and for this reason tend to cost more, especially if they have the long, luxurious coat. Like all German Shepherds, they are prone to health problems The German Shepherd breed can, unfortunately, suffer from numerous health issues. The number one concern for this breed is hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. This condition occurs when the ball and socket joint is malformed and can result in arthritis or even lameness. This can be helped by maintaining a healthy weight in your dog. Other potential health problems include: Heart disease. Every day I realize that all the time I invested in training her since the very first day she came has been more than worthwhile. Every single day we go run 6 Km at in the morning. I am training her to search and find hidden objects on command and from time to time, when we walk in a trail with the kids, they hide and I make her find them on command. I love the idea of training her for search and rescue. Very obedient and trainable. Emma is being fed only raw meat of all kinds beef, marrow bone, sardines, tuna, lots of chicken, tripe , cottage cheese, yogurt and some veggies, no dry food at all. She is doing great, I love to prepare her food. Feeding her is not an extra job, we just give her what we happen to have in the fridge and keep her diet balanced, just as another family member! We rescued Emma, a black, long-coated GSD at 5 weeks of age that was in very bad shape: thin to the bones and full of worms. She is now 12 weeks old and since day 1 we were very strict about proper crate training and yes, a couple of weeks of sleepless nights for me , the sitting and waiting ritual at feeding time and before coming in and out the house to the garden. Even though she was in a very bad shape, thanks to all the info from your site we offered her leadership and clear rules before affection. By the end of the first week she would pee on command , and do the sit-stay-come exercise. She's never peed inside her crate. Only once when she was weeks old she barked at our kids Lia, 5 and Daniel, 7 in a dominant tone. I was very close so I was able to correct her immediately. Since then I frequently make the kids feed, touch her and her food while she's eating and practice the sit-down-stay-come exercise. No more signs of dominance. Now that she's done with her shots she walks and runs with my wife and me daily and walks very nicely without pulling and accepts our lead very nicely. The only quirk with this puppy is that she likes poop! I ruled out parasites and bad nutrition, it's just that she likes poop , after all, she's a dog. After reading some of Bruno the Boxer's stories I was relieved. Less and less often do we see her attracted to the poop and hope she'll outgrow this behaviour. We get to practice often the "Drop it! Thanks to your site we also decided to keep our bedrooms and the play room off-limits. Now I wouldn't recommend getting a dog until the kids in the family are very well informed and able to be consistent, very consistent with rules. I'm a stats professor at a local university here so I have a very flexible schedule and also can work from home which has definitively helped. Some GSD websites actually encourage the dog sleeping in your room, contrary to what your site recommends and other nonsense things like choosing a dominant puppy from the litter , but admittedly, that was a little too much for us. He is an only child to a military family stationed in Guam. Jake has a friendly and inviting personality and is always willing to give hugs to those who need them the most. He is the most popular dog on the block, and is known to be "the human dog. She was a purebred all-black German Shepherd that I purchased from a breeder. Duchess was a wonderful dog. She loved cats but they didn't quite love her. Sadly, in February , I lost Duchess. Tragically, my house was broken into and my two dogs Duchess and my other 1-year-old German Shepherd Tyco were let out. I found Tyco the next day in the pound and quickly made posters the third day to find Duchess. Unfortunately, three hours after 60 posters were posted a lady called stating she had seen the dogs together, and Duchess had run into the street as the police tried to capture her and got hit by a car and didn't make it. I was heartbroken and still am. His pedigree name is Leynosk Deboniar. Skye, a GSD puppy Kiko left and her litter mate. Kiko is a blue German Shepherd puppy. With this in mind, you may want to consider having two dogs so they can keep one another company. We humans are great company but dogs are happiest with another canine companion.

Deciding you want to purchase a pug puppy is exciting. However, you want to make sure you find the right puppy for you. Make sure you seek out reputable breeders so your puppy does not come with any health problems. Visit the puppies in person and choose the one that suits your needs. Ask the breeder plenty of questions about the puppy's current health and pedigree. Before bringing your new friend home, make sure your house is puppy proofed. All rights reserved. This image may not be used by other entities without the express written consent of wikiHow, Inc. Pug puppies come with a unique set of needs. Puppies in general require more care than an adult dog. Before embarking on your journey to find a pug puppy, consider whether you can accommodate one at the moment. Make sure you have time for a puppy. Puppies need extra feeding, as well socialization and training. If you have a very busy schedule, you may want to wait for things to settle down before getting a puppy. Pugs, as a pet, require some maintenance. The folds in their faces need regular cleaning, and they're also prone to a great deal of shedding. Make sure you can live with frequent grooming, and accept the fact your house will never quite be hair-free. Like all breeds, pugs are prone to certain health problems. While a good breeder is adept at breeding out such problems, there are certain problems that are hard to breed out. These are usually simply due to how a pug is built. Learn the risks associated with pugs and make sure you're prepared to deal with them down the road. All pugs, regardless of breeding, are prone to eye problems. Pug's distinctive, bulging eyes expose a large area of their corneas, which puts their eyes at risk of drying out or forming ulcers. You may have to deal with frequent vet visits to deal with eye issues. Pugs are very prone to overheating because their flattened faces makes it hard for them to breathe. This problem can be even worse in hot weather, and overheating can cause serious health issues for a pug. Behaviorally, pugs are a more social breed. They are more prone to separation anxiety issues than other breeds. If you're gone a lot, a pug may not be the right dog for you. When searching for a breeder, there are a few places to scratch off your list right away. Puppy mills and very obviously bad breeders should be avoided. You're more likely to get a pug with existing health problems, or the risk of developing health problems down the road. In general, do not trust a breeder who simply sells dogs online from any given buyer. A breeder who does not ask any questions is probably not a good breeder. Responsible breeders want to make sure their dogs go to good homes. Puppy mills sometimes sell puppies to pet stores, so avoid buying a pug from a pet store. Puppy mills may also sell pugs online. If you can simply look at a picture of a puppy and purchase it, this is probably a puppy mill. Start your search locally. If you're lucky, you will be able to find a breeder who lives nearby. Look for ads in the newspaper, online, at local pet stores and veterinary clinics, and at any local pet clubs. A breeder in your area is convenient, as you will not have to travel far to see the puppies. Just because someone is a local breeder, do not assume they are an ethical one. Make sure to visit any breeder in person and look at the puppies physically before purchasing one. Unfortunately, not all areas have pug breeders close by. In some cases, you may have to travel to meet and select a puppy. There are many places you can look online to locate the nearest pug breeder. The Pug Dog Club keeps a list of reputable breeders online. You can search for the closest breeder there. The American Kennel Club also has a database of dog breeders. You can search there by breed. Remember to have patience. Even if you find a good breeder relatively close to you, they may not have puppies available for a while. You may have to wait a few months before taking home your pug puppy. Call a few breeders during your search. Pay close attention to your interactions. Learn the signs of a good breeder. Only work with breeders who are responsible and care about their dogs. Their facilities should be clean and spacious. They will be flexible in scheduling a time for you to see the puppies. A solid breeder will usually only breed one type of dog, or only a few types of dogs. The breeder should be very knowledgeable of pugs. During your initial conversation, the breeder will want to go over some basic pug care information with you. Good breeders do not have anything to hide. Not only will the be willing to let you see the dog's pedigree and meet their parents, they will actually encourage this. When you select a breeder to meet up with, make sure to ask a variety of questions. You want to make sure their puppies are a good match for you and your home. You also want to make sure the breeder is responsible and that the puppies are in good health. Interacting with a dog's mother and father can give you a sense of your puppy's future temperament. Ask questions about the breeder's credentials. Ask how long they've been breeding pugs. A more experienced breeder is more likely to produce healthier puppies. Ask about the puppy's parents. Make sure the parents do not have any inheritable diseases. Ask if you can see the health certificates for the parents on request. You should also ask about what treatment the puppies have received. Have they been vaccinated or de-wormed? Have they been spayed or neutered yet? When you get a chance to interact with the puppies, look closely at the puppy's you like. Pugs are prone to certain abnormalities. You can detect a potential issue by examining the dog's eyes, as well as how it breathes and moves. Watery eyes, squinted eyes, or glazed over eyes are signs of poor health. Hold the puppy close to you to hear it breathe. Raspy, labored breathing is generally a bad sign. Watch the puppy moving and at rest. It's not uncommon for pugs to breathe through their mouths when running around. However, a resting puppy should be able to comfortably breathe through its nose. There should be no signs of limping or an uneven gain if the puppies are old enough to walk. If you notice a puppy walking funny, listen for a clicking noise from the hips. This indicates the dog may develop hip problems later in life. As you interact with the puppies, aim for one with a good temperament. You want a puppy that's not too shy, but also one that's not overly rambunctious. You want a puppy that allows you to pick it up without squirming. A very aggressive or very standoffish puppy can be a problem. Once you've selected two or three pugs you like, request one-on-one time with them. You want a puppy that is friendly away from its litter. A friendly puppy will wag its tail, allow you to pet it, and look at you when you talk. A good breeder will be as scrutinizing of you as you are of them. Breeders want to make sure their dogs go to good homes, so don't be put off if a breeder asks you a lot of questions. This is a good sign. The breeder wants to make sure you will take good care of the puppy. They will also want to know about your general lifestyle and how you plan to care for the dog. If this is your first pug, don't panic. A breeder is unlikely to reject you simply because you don't have specific experience with pugs. As long as you've done some research on the breed, the breeder will probably be willing to sell to you if you're responsible. A good breeder will always be willing to provide this information. After selecting the puppy you want, ask for its pedigree as well as a certificate of health. These papers should assure you the puppy is in good health, and that its family tree is relatively free of inheritable conditions. Puppies need frequent vet visits. You should have a certification on hand showing what vaccinations and other treatments your dog has already received. As you prepare to bring your puppy home, make sure you're ready. Your puppy should enter your home with all the supplies it needs to thrive ready. You will need the following: [7] X Research source A crate to transport your puppy home and for crate training later Bedding Collar, leash, and identification tag Toys Grooming supplies i. Before bringing your dog home, you will need to pug proof your house. Pugs are inquisitive animals and prone to getting into things. You want to make sure your pug cannot get into any dangerous substances or places. Make sure all electrical wires are covered or out of reach. Keep things like household cleaners and detergents out of reach. Place them in high kitchen cabinets. Prevent access to staircases, as young pugs can easily slip and fall on the stairs. A good breeder will present you with a contract prior to purchase. This outlines your basic responsibilities and the breeder's return policy. Read the contract carefully before signing. If there's anything you don't understand, ask the breeder. You want the option of returning a dog in the event it has a health problem you cannot afford to treat. Once the contract is signed and your home is ready, you can bring your new friend home. You can now enjoy your pug puppy, and begin the process of training and caring for your new lifelong friend. Now, I have to decide which Pug puppy to bring home. I'm so nervous that I'll choose the wrong dog. How can I possibly know I am choosing a Pug puppy that is the best one for me? They're all going to be so cute! Answer: Hi Ashley. We agree that all of the puppies are going to be adorable and cute! However, there are definitely some guidelines that you can follow when you are trying to pick out the perfect Pug pup. We are not sure if it matters to you if you have a male or female. There are not that many differences, despite what others may say. While potential health problems may not be visible, there are 3 things that everyone should do: Check the eyes, breathing and gait. The Eyes: The eyes are not only the window to the soul, they can also give you a clue about the health of the dog. Watering, squinting or a glazed film on the eyes is a sign of health issues. Breathing: Hold the puppy close to your ear and listen carefully. Do you hear rattling and rasping? This is a sign of a breathing problem. Does the puppy have to breath through his or her mouth? If the puppy is at rest, they should be able to breath fine with their mouth closed this can be a stenotic nare issue, which often needs to be corrected with a surgical procedure. Watch the puppy walk: While young pups under the age of 6 weeks may still be gaining their footing, take note of any limping or odd gait issues. If you do notice an odd gait, listen for any clicking noises coming from the hip area. This sort of issue may be caused by underdeveloped hip bones joint and socket , a health problem not uncommon with the Pug breed. Interaction and Activity Some people will tell you that you should pick the puppy that comes right over to you first. This is not the best advice. Puppies that are very bold like that may be harder to train. Their enthusiasm may be great fun for a while, but keeping up with and trying to train such a puppy may turn out to be stressful. When you are choosing a Pug puppy, it is usually best to choose one who is quiet and calm. However, you most certainly need to make sure that the pug is not too quite due to an illness or extreme shyness. You don't want to bring home an ill pup and choosing a dog that is overly shy may make for a pet that is afraid of everything and will be in need of extensive of socialization training. It is recommended to have a close look at several puppies that stay in the background. If a Pug puppy is laying listless without any energy at all, this is a warning sign that the dog may be unhealthy. A calm Pug that does respond to you when picked up is what you should be looking for. Listen to the breathing for any signs of labored breathing or rasps. If the breathing is clear, take a look at the eyes. They should be bright and clear without an excessive discharge. With 2 or 3 puppies now left for you to decide on, take a look at how each one responds to you and how they respond to each other. Wiggle a toy in front of a puppy or whistle to him or her and see if the pup shows natural curiosity. The one for you should come over to you to investigate. Allow the whole litter to play with a toy. Take notice of the ones that seem to be bossy and the ones that seem to play fair. Take note of the ones who cower in the corner if the others fight for the toys. You will want to choose a Pug puppy who falls somewhere in the middle. This will ensure you have one that has a calm, yet curious personality. Finally, when you have it narrowed down to 2, do not feel rushed. Take time to sit down with each and talk to them. Does the pup look at you when you talk? Does he or she keep their tail high or wag the tail to express happiness? At this point, you should get a good feeling about which puppy is the one that is meant for you. Please remember, that just because you have an appointment to pick up a dog does not mean that you must go home with one. If the litter seems ill, all of the dogs seem aggressive or you do not feel a bond with any of the puppies it is absolutely acceptable to relay this to the breeder. While you may be very disappointed at first, in the long run you will be happy that you waited. When you are holding the Pug puppy that is right for you, you will know it. The Pug, or Pug Dog, is famous for its flat-faced appearance and large, soulful eyes. They are an ancient dog breed that originated in China over 2, years ago. They were originally developed as a refined pet of Chinese royalty along with the Pekingese and the Shih Tzu. During this time, the Pug was considered a national treasure that outsiders could only access if one was gifted to them. Dutch traders from the s can be credited with bringing the Pug onto the world stage when they brought some back to Europe with them. The Pug made its way to the United States in the s. Now, the Pug is a popular dog breed worldwide. They are a popular companion that provides their owners with plenty of love and laughter from their comedic and playful antics. The Pug is a playful and outgoing dog breed with a charming personality. They tend to be very loving towards children and also get along well with other pets and dogs. They are a companion breed at heart known for their gentle nature and sociable personality. They love to give love and receive it in return. Their sensitive nature makes them intuitive as well and Pugs will often sense the moods of their owners and react accordingly. They crave attention and affection from their owners and are big fans of napping. This dog breed is often described as an ideal house dog and they are moderately adaptable. They will do well in homes of any size, including apartments. The Pug also adapts well to city or country life and are a good fit for singles or families of any size. Although they are highly adaptable to various living situations, they are less adaptable to climates. Pugs are very sensitive to the heat and overexertion, so they are best-suited to moderate climates. They also love to be with their families and will not be happy if left alone for a long time. As with any dog breed, the Pug has some health conditions to be aware of. In particular, corneal ulcers and dry eye are some potential eye problems that can occur. Additionally, Pugs can be susceptible to hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, and encephalitis. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and to see health clearances can help allay concerns for some of these health issues. Pugs are also big foodies. They love to eat! Their love for food means this dog breed is prone to obesity. As a brachycephalic dog, their large head and short snout often cause respiratory problems, which can limit their exercise at times and contribute to weight gain. This will cause them to quickly gasp and snort, which can sound relatively alarming. These episodes are usually not harmful as your Pug is just clearing their palate and throat. The Pug tends to be easy to train and is a good fit for owners of any experience level. They are eager to please their owners and tend to pick up on commands quickly. They are sensitive souls and their feelings can be hurt easily, so they will not respond well to harsh corrections. This dog breed responds best to consistent training that focuses on positive rewards and will benefit from participation in puppy training classes. Pugs have a smooth, glossy, and short coat. Their fur is fine and soft. Although their coat is generally low-maintenance, it will shed throughout the year. Aside from brushing, Pugs only need occasional baths on an as-needed basis. Because Pugs have ears that drop down, they can be susceptible to moisture, dirt, or debris. Checking their ears regularly and cleaning as needed helps to keep them healthy and comfortable. The same goes for their iconic face wrinkles. Daily brushing is ideal, but if your Pug is not allowing you to do that, a few times a week should be sufficient. Getting your Pug used to these grooming tasks as a puppy will help make it a positive bonding experience and a much easier process throughout their life. This dog breed has a low to moderate energy level. Generally, daily walks and some play sessions are enough exercise for this dog breed. They may have short bursts of energy as they have a very playful nature, but they will tire easily. Some Pugs can handle a little more activity and even compete in some dogs sports like agility, rally, and obedience. Make sure you check with your vet first before jumping into dog sports with your dog. A full-grown Pug will usually stand 10 to 11 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 14 and 18 pounds. This dog breed generally lives for years. The Pug was a popular pet of the Buddhist monasteries in Tibet. Featured Pug Article. french bulldog puppies in kentucky - F1b have one purebred parent and one cavapoo parent. All our F1b have a poodle parent and a cavapoo parent. If it were a cavalier parent and a cavapoo parent the puppies would shed and may look like mix breed spaniels. Same for cavapoo to cavapoo. I like silly hair cuts! I try to get a photo of each new way I trim their coats. The unique! My affinity for unique color prompted me to look for my favorite color of all time which is blue merle. Chocolate is even more popular and dilute so Cappuccino will produce blue merle cava-poo puppies, and maybe chocolate if the genes are there for the dilute in the Cavalier. Cavapoos are proving to be one of the favorite crosses families are looking for. Cavaliers are super sweet and snuggly so adding a bit more brains, and eliminating shedding makes for a terrific companion! The Maltese are full of themselves and so tiny. Perfect for those who want a really small dog that has some spunk, so crossed with poodle they are very easy to train! We wont have any Maltipoo until when Angelica, Angels daughter, is old enough to have puppies. Bubba is our red AKC miniature poodle from terrific health tested bloodlines. He is very smart and just a cuddle bug. Everyone who visits loves Bubba. They are shocked to learn he is a poodle. He has changed many peoples impressions of poodles, raised with lots of socializing and children like most poodles in that situation a friendly outgoing dog, super smart, and looks like a teddy bear, or lion, or whatever strange thing I have turned him into with silly hair cuts! Also pictures of him as a tiny 13 ounce puppy. He is another dog that proves you cant go by the poodle chart to know how big a puppy will actually get, he should have stayed about 6 pounds if the chart was accurate. I like to trim him like a teddy bear, and experiment with different ways to trim his coat. Some hair cuts are so goofy looking I didn't take any photos of them, but lately I decided to add the whole range to the slide show, even Bubba still wet form a bath! I like the lion cut the most, although the big eyebrow cut is much easier to keep groomed! Bubba has been health tested. He has OFA hips, eyes, and had a DNA test which checks things, which showed he was clear for everything tested, but a carrier for one thing. Carriers can't have the problem. My ex-mother-in-law turned 90 in March .Her dog had passed away a few months earlier. She was set on a dog who did not need to have hair cuts. Kim, my daughter, now goes every week to take her shopping, and on outings. I had done my bossy thing and told her to convince her to get a non-shedding, hypoallergenic dog. She isn't able to clean house well anymore, she has allergies, even though she denies it. Plus there was talk about going into a senior residential community, which I know she would love. Shes a social person. She tried getting 2 cats who needed a home. It didnt work, rubbing on her legs the one was going to knock her down, and they were getting into her many houseplants. I dont even want to think about the litter box situation, older home and plumbing and she was convinced you can just scoop it into the commode. In the outings with Kim she kept pointing at cute little dogs. Kim kept pointing out, Granda those dogs have cute hair cuts, it doesn't grow that way. Kim wisely suggested bringing over a different dog of the varieties she could borrow from us. Then she could meet them see what they are like and maybe keep one. Kim took Bubba first. He hopped in her lap. Before you know it shes asking if he would sleep with her. She never had a dog sleep in the bed due to the fur issue. Bubba slept with us. Kim said she wasn't planning to leave him, she will bring him back and bring the next dog. Edna asked to keep him. So Bubba was her 90th birthday present from us. He is not formally retired but will be as soon as our new red male is old enough and passes his health testing. Bubba adores her. Nothing better then to have a furry best friend. We of course also care for Edna and why I suggested Bubba. I knew she needed a best friend and Bubba is such a great dog. Bubba Bubba and his black poodle son. Bubba, as a puppy. Teddy red Cavapoo, and Bubba when a little baby. Bubba 3 months old, at a dirt bike race. He didn't mind the noise at all.
