Moreover, the right wet dog food can cater to specific dietary needs. Wet vs. Being a dog parent to a German shepherd is quite tricky. Its diet requirement varies in whatever life stage your dog belongs to. What does this mean? An active and growing puppy requirement is twice more than what an adult dog needs for the elderly ones. Most people feed their dogs with canned food, however there are tons of different types and labels out there in the market and you are hard-pressed to even know where to start and what to choose. We will also answer frequently asked questions to ensure that your German Shepherd dog get what it deserves. Whichever the case, your main goal is ensuring that they have a nutritious food that promotes healthy growth and energy levels, right? The problem is that the grains do not provide the same nutritional value as other forms of carbohydrates, and often cause digestion problems in your dog. Real Beef Is The 1 Ingredient: Some of the bigger named dog food companies have also started using animal byproducts, such as chicken innards, to increase the amount of protein in their recipes. These byproducts are not nearly as dense in protein as real meat, which is why Purina makes real beef their 1 ingredient. These recipes are loaded with the high quality protein your dog needs to maintain healthy muscle production. Crafted By In-House Nutritionists: Purina offers a wide range of recipes and flavors that contain no added preservatives or artificial flavorings. Caused Reactions In Overly Sensitive Dogs: While Purina went with a grain-free recipe for their Beyond Natural line of foods, some customers have also reported that it did cause sensitivity in their pets. If your dog has shown sensitivity to foods in the past, you should also keep this fact in mind. Buying Advice Purina has put a lot of time and energy into formulating their Beyond Natural line of wet dog foods. With a wide range of recipes to choose from, you can find one for even the pickiest of eaters. High Quality Complex Carbohydrates: Complex carbs, unlike simple sugars, give your pet a long lasting boost of energy. Simple sugars will give them a quick energy boost, but them make them crash, acting lethargic throughout the day. Because of their wide distribution channels, they make up for the lower price by selling more units overall. That means you save money, and can easily find it in most big box and pet stores. Cons Dented Cans: Ordering canned dog food online presents one major problem: the shipping process. Some of them were unable to be opened with a can opener. Picky Dogs Turn Their Noses Up: Even offering a wide range of recipes for you to choose from, some customers have also reported that their dogs still snubbed their nose at Natural Balance, and refused to eat it. When you have to feed more than 1, you may need to consider picking up a second job just to support their diet. Or, you can look at the IAMS Proactive Health line of dog foods that are making a name for themselves for being so affordable, while still tasting great and being packed full of nutritious ingredients. This slow cooking process creates a great tasting broth. In order to gain control over the infestation, you need to be able to stop new eggs from forming into adults, effectively breaking the life cycle. Their prices are some of the most affordable on the market, so if you are on a strict budget, IAMS is a definite contender that should be considered. With free shipping, you can save almost 50 cents a can, compared to what you can expect to pay in your local big box stores or pet warehouses. You can also consider setting up automatic shipping, and have new orders sent straight to your door each month — ensuring you never run out. Their Choice Cuts line of wet dog foods attempts to position Pedigree as a gourmet choice in the wet dog food market. Keep reading to find out! Pros Essential Oils And Extra Minerals: Each can is also infused with essential fatty acids, and extra vitamins and minerals to help promote strong internal systems, a healthy coat, and skin. Choice Cuts Of Meat: One area that Pedigree did address was in the inclusion of actual meat products inside of this line of wet dog foods. Irresistible Taste: A lot of the dogs that eat Pedigree are very fond of the flavor. Each can is cooked with the meat and water combined to create a great tasting gravy that your dogs will lick clean from their bowl. These percentages keep your dogs active without feeling lethargic, and have just enough protein to help their muscles burn fat, keeping them from becoming overweight. Mixture Of Flavors: If your dog happens to snub their nose at one flavor, there are still around 10 more flavors to choose from. If you want to give your dog a variety, you could feed them a different can every day of the week, and still have a few left over. Subscription Delivery Available: Ordering from Amazon gives you the option to have your order automatically refilled on the interval you set. Cons Includes Grains: A large portion of the ingredients in each can are, indeed, grain based. Pedigree uses a slick method of renaming different grain based products to keep the overall total from being the 1 ingredient on the back of the label. Causes Pickiness In Non-Picky Dogs: Some customers have reported that their dogs, who normally eat everything in sight, would snub their noses at the Pedigree Choice Cuts line of foods. For this reason alone, you may want to order a single can to test the waters before you start purchasing in bulk. Buying Advice While we commend Pedigree for making drastic changes over the last few years, we recommend you click on the button below to read reviews from other customers, and then make a decision on your own as to whether or not Pedigree Choice Cuts is right for your dog. Probably even your great-grandparents, for that matter. We all do, and your dogs will, too. Each recipe in the Alpo Chop House line of foods is inspired by the same dishes we all love to get at our favorite steakhouse restaurants. Contains Essential Vitamins And Minerals: A lot of dog food companies are more interested in their profits, which means excluding high end ingredients that give your dog the nutrients they need to thrive. Purina, though, uses only the highest quality, all natural ingredients that deliver exactly the vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients your dog requires to live a long, happy, and healthy life. Excellent Customer Service: Purina is not some fly-by-night brand who is going to take your money one day, and be gone the next. Cons Price Recently Increased: This is the way it goes with business. When you have something successful, the prices tend to increase over time. However, Purina recently doubled the cost of their Alpo Chop Steakhouse line of dog foods. Customers Less Than Pleased With Shipping: While not necessarily a reflection on the company itself, a lot of customers have reported receiving their cases of food with a large amount of dents in the cans. Regardless, we thought you should know that this is a potential problem customers have been reporting on. Each can of Freedom Lamb Dinner wet dog food by Blue Buffalo is specially formulated with real lamb, potatoes, and oatmeal, and is naturally infused with essential vitamins, minerals, and omega fatty acids to promote a healthy nervous system, brain, bones, and muscles. Recipe Includes Potatoes And Oatmeal: A lot of companies like to use low quality products even sawdust, in some cases as carbohydrates that help give your dog energy. Blue Buffalo, though, includes healthy complex carbs like sweet potatoes and oatmeal that both enhance flavor, and give your dog energy in between meals. Natural, Holistic Formula For All Dogs: There are zero animal byproducts like lungs, noses, hooves, ears, and eyes inside of the Freedom line of wet dog foods. These products are great for adding filler, but are not loaded down with the vitamins and minerals that your dog needs to stay healthy. The combination makes a great broth that dogs go crazy for, and it really extends the life of each can of wet food — especially when you have multiple dogs. You may need to wash your hands after you serve it to them. Buying Advice Blue Buffalo has a wide range of products that have all earned a reputation for being some of the best on the market, while still staying competitive on price. That means, for a growing dog, each can of Blue Buffalo Freedom wet dog food is formulated to promote healthy growth from puppy to adulthood. Another disadvantage with wet foods is that some manufacturers often add wheat flour, white rice or other grains as a thickener that makes it lower in quality. Nevertheless, wet food is also advantage in special circumstances especially when your dog is a picky eater, or if you have an elderly dog who have lost appetite and might find wet food more appealing. This is also good for dogs who have trouble chewing and digesting. Is a canned tuna good for German shepherd? Tuna is just not part of their natural diet. Another one negative factor about feeding our shepherd pups with canned tuna is the risk that we are giving them from mercury levels. German shepherds can eat tuna but you need to make sure you do it just on the right timing. For example, if your dog weighs 40 pounds, they can have it once every nine days or if yours is bigger, then once every 7 days will be enough. The amount of tuna that you feed them solely depends on the size of your German shepherd dog. How many cans of dog food should German shepherd eat? But what do they actually mean by that? Yes — it is true that our German shepherd dogs deserve a healthy and nutritious yet satisfying and generous amount of food, but please know for a fact that the said specific amount varies along the following things that we need to consider: Size — the bigger the dog, the bigger the appetite. Active and hardworking German shepherd dogs are most likely to eat more than what a couch potato German shepherd. Health considerations— Vets will recommend a good diet that would suit your senior or sick German shepherd. But to give you an approximate amount for your german shepherd dog with good health and fitness. Is it okay to feed a dog just canned food? This question can be answered by the dog parents themselves. Whether it is kibble, canned or home processed, each dog is different as well as their appetite. Some dogs are used to eating kibble alone, some are solely canned food while some others are mixed. Either way, just as long as you feed your pup the right amount, securing the quality of the food you give, not overlooking the nutritional factors needed, then your good is to go! Conslusion As the market is very much competitive against each other, we as dog parents are sometimes lead to being so indecisive of what to really feed our dogs. Along with the good intention to give your dog the best diet that you can give him, please always consider and never forget that good quality and good quantity is what matters the most. Many of this information is recommended and regulated by the Association of American Feed Control. You can look out for the small AAFO seal of approval on the packaging as a quick way to determine if a food is suitable for your dog. High Protein Content The most important thing your dog will need as both a puppy and an adult is protein. Protein is responsible for muscle growth and energy. With hip dysplasia, the bones in the hip joint did not form correctly. This leads to immense pain and difficulties in walking. Unfortunately, the condition can remain undetected until your dog is older. Having the right amount of calcium and phosphorus can do a lot to prevent the condition. Calcium is typically derived from dairy products or eggs. Phosphorus is found in meat products and organs. German Shepherd puppies need to have 1 part of phosphorus for every 1. As long as the food has this ratio, it should be good for your pup. Complex Carbs Carbohydrates are a source of energy for dogs. Healthy alternatives include sweet potatoes, peas, and whole oats. These are all considered to be complex carbs. They have a low glycemic index, which means that they are absorbed slowly throughout the day rather than all at once. Complex carbohydrates also act as a healthy source of fiber. Despite their small size as young dogs, they can pack away a lot of food. The meals need to split up to ensure that your dog can process everything before they eat again. The breed is susceptible to excessive weight gain and obesity. Your dog needs to gain weight in a healthy manner. Otherwise, they can develop musculoskeletal problems. Furthermore, Bloat is a serious risk. Bloat occurs when dogs eat too much food too fast. Air gets trapped in their stomach, causing it to twist. At around six months old, you can start to transition to two meals a day. The amount of food you feed your dog will depend on their body condition and the calorie content of the food. Follow the guidelines on the packaging and consult with your vet to see what your pup needs. Which is Better: Wet or Dry Food? Wet and dry food both have their advantages. Once your dog is weaned off their mother, you should start them off with canned food. At 12 weeks of age, start to add in kibble. Slowly take away the canned food and proceed with the dry kibble for their daily meals. Kibble is your best bet as your dog gets older. Tennessee is a great place to live with an English bulldog. How do you breed for a healthier English Bulldog? Like all things in life, breeding for health is simply a matter of priority. We are blind to many of the breed priorities that distract other breeders from improving the health of the English Bulldog. We focus on health and personality and very little else. We are not interested in winning a blue ribbon in the show ring. Rather, we test for things like elongated soft palates, narrow tracheas, stenotic nares, luxation in the patellar tendons, heart defects, cherry eye, optic cilia, entropion, ect. We focus and prioritize creating healthy bloodlines, therefore our bulldogs are typically much healthier than the breed as a whole. After breeding for health, what other priorities are you focused on? Our true desire is to create the perfect family bulldog. We also believe a bulldog bred for the correct personality is essential to the family unit as well. A Bruiser Bulldog is bred for intelligence and playfulness. We want our bulldogs to be full of personality and some quirk. We believe a full personality along with a little stubbornness is the true North star of the bulldog breed and is what makes the unique among other breeds. We look for these personality traits in our adult bulldogs and continue to create bloodlines that reflect these qualities. What are the steps of your adoption process if I am located in Tennessee? I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. They date back hundreds of years and are also known as British Bulldogs. They are a muscular, well-built dog with a wrinkled face and a pushed-in nose. This breed has won the hearts of generations of families for decades. They are considered to be one of the most popular dogs breeds in existence today. These fantastic puppies have gained popularity worldwide due to their playful, loyal, funny, and caring personality. They are laidback and tend to get along well with just about anyone or anything. They have very approachable demeanors and enjoy the companionship of their family. They also have a very easy-going personality which is one of the reasons they have remained a popular family dog. The English Bulldog does enjoy activity time and burning off energy, however, is not an overly energetic breed of dog. The correct ratio of meat-based protein and micronutrients, as well as healthy carbs and fats, will keep your dog feeling and looking his best. Most people recommend feeding this breed two meals each day, spaced about twelve hours apart. This will help to ensure the dog is provided with the proper nutrients he needs. It is also important to remember to provide your dog with proper dental care. It is suggested that his teeth get cleaned a minimum of three times a week. Failing to keep his teeth clean can contribute to health issues. Although properly cleaning his teeth will take some practice to get good at, in time, this will become easier for you and your pup. The English Bulldog grows to be between fourteen and fifteen inches tall. At maturity, the English Bulldog weighs between fifty and fifty-five pounds. The average life expectancy for this breed is between eight and ten years. English Bulldogs require regular bathing and grooming. It is suggested that they are bathed as frequently as every week up to no more than every four weeks depending on their activity level and lifestyle. This smooth coated breed does best with routine brushing which is essential to maintain healthy skin and a healthy coat. Bulldog Spotlight Gordon James I joined rescue because my family became overwhelmed with five kids and life, plain and simply. I decided I was ready to go because we were in an apartment and every day, it was getting smaller and smaller and smaller. My family loved me, but sometimes, love is not enough because I can hardly breathe. We are dedicated to saving and re-homing Bulldogs so they can have the healthy, happy lives they truly deserve. The group has been dedicated to the breed since , as a component of Lone Star Bulldog Club. Lone Star Bulldog Club Rescue accepts Bulldogs from owners who can no longer keep them, as well as retrieves Bulldogs from shelters and other undesirable situations. Each Bulldog in the program is lovingly cared for in a foster home until the perfect forever family for that specific dog is found. Every Bulldog is different: personality, temperament, energy, comfort with kids and other animals, medical needs and more. We take all these factors into consideration when making a forever-home match. Adoption is a coordinated process between the coordinators, fosters and applicant. We work together with our knowledge of the dog to find the best home. When you apply, you might have a particular dog in mind. But please understand, that dog may already be in the process of being adopted by an approved family who has been waiting weeks to be matched with the right dog. But they would prefer to be the only thing with fur in their home. They still make a wonderful companion and deserve a loving home. For your convenience, they have been designated as Forever Single on our website. If you plan on only having one dog, we hope you will consider one of these. Since most of our volunteers live in the North Texas area, it is easier on us and the applying family if they live in this area. Because of this, our out-of-state adoptions are incredibly rare and only in neighboring states. If you are ready to submit your adoption application, please complete the Adopt A Bulldog Application. A volunteer will then review your application. This process can take some time, and not every home is a suitable home for a Bulldog, so please be patient. You are not buying a dog. My name is Monty and I am famous! Yesterday, my photo was all over social media and friends were begging someone to save me. The shelter said I had to be out by …. It may no longer be relevant Dash the 2 year old English Bulldog was unfortunately surrendered over to the staff at East Holmes Veterinary Clinic due to bladder stones. Being partnered with East Holmes vet clinic in re-homing dogs in need — they quickly got into contact with us as it was apparent he needed to have surgery immediately. We raced down to Berlin, Ohio and picked up the poor boy. We transported him to our veterinarians at West Park Animal Hospital where he underwent his first surgery. The stones were removed and he went into a foster home with Friendship board member, Amy Richards, and her husband. While he was recovering from his surgery, they noticed he was still having trouble going using the bathroom… A week later, it was back to the doctors. This time they sent him home with antibiotics for a possible urinary tract infection. Things did not seem to be improving despite the treatment. In fact, things seemed to be getting worse! We all agreed that it was time for him to see a specialist. We took him to Metropolitan as an emergency patient. It turns out we were all in for a shock at what this poor dog was enduring. Dash had probably been living with bladder stones for so long that they had completely scarred his urethra. It was at the point where a catheter could not pass through from all the scar tissue. His bladder had swelled to the size of a grapefruit due to his inability to relieve himself. There was only one choice — a very drastic surgery to bypass the scar tissue. They made a completely new urine passage for him so he could finally use the bathroom like a normal dog. It is truly incredible! Dash was now able to go to the bathroom on his own! He seemed like a whole new dog that was comfortable for the first time in years. A flip had switched and he was happy, playful and running around! After months of recovering from both surgeries, his foster family could not let him go. His new name is Fred, he has another English Bulldog sibling, and he could not be living a more happy and fulfilling life. Fred is just one of many special dogs that we are able to give a second chance thanks to your generous donations. But the cost of seeing him running around and playing in the backyard…is truly priceless. To help more dogs like Fred, considering supporting the Friendship APL with a one-time or recurring donation. While some of the causes of this odor are minor and can be easily fixed, others can indicate more severe health issues. Understanding these causes is essential for effectively addressing the issue. Here are the top 7 causes: Skin Infections: Skin infections, such as bacterial or yeast infections, can lead to an unpleasant odor. Anal Gland Problems: Golden Retrievers have anal glands that produce a scent. When these glands become impacted or infected, they can emit a fishy smell. Expressing the anal glands regularly can help prevent odor-related issues. Dietary Factors: Certain foods, especially those high in fish-based proteins, can contribute to fishy-smelling breath or body odor in Golden Retrievers. The digestion of these proteins can result in a lingering smell. This can lead to an increase in oil production, resulting in an odor. Ear Infections: Golden Retrievers are prone to ear infections, which can produce a distinct odor. Bacteria or yeast overgrowth in the ears can cause discomfort and emit a fishy smell. Dental Problems: Poor dental hygiene and oral health issues, such as gum disease or tooth decay, can contribute to bad breath and an overall fishy smell in Golden Retrievers. Understanding these causes will help you pinpoint the source of the fishy smell in Golden Retrievers and take appropriate measures to address them effectively. Continue reading as we give you tips on how to prevent the fishy smell in Golden Retrievers. This includes brushing their coat to remove loose hair and prevent matting, which can trap odors. Use a high-quality, breed-appropriate brush and consider professional grooming services as needed. Bathing: Bathe your Golden Retriever regularly, but not excessively, as frequent bathing can strip their coat of natural oils. Use a mild, dog-specific shampoo that helps eliminate odors. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to avoid residue that may contribute to lingering smells. Brush their teeth regularly using dog-friendly toothpaste and provide dental chews or toys to help reduce plaque and tartar buildup. Good oral hygiene can minimize fishy breath odors. Regularly check for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or discharge. Clean their ears gently with a veterinarian-recommended ear cleaning solution and follow any specific instructions provided. Healthy Diet: Provide a balanced and high-quality diet for your Golden Retriever. Choose dog food formulas that are free from fillers and artificial additives. Some owners find that switching to a diet with alternative protein sources, such as poultry or lamb, can help reduce fishy odors. Proper anal gland function can help minimize fishy smells associated with glandular issues. Keep them away from stagnant water, strong fish scents, or other potential odor sources during walks or outdoor activities. By following these preventative measures, Golden Retriever owners can help keep their dogs smelling fresh and minimize the occurrence of fishy odors. Here are some effective solutions to consider: Veterinary Consultation: If your Golden Retriever is experiencing persistent or severe fishy odors, consult a veterinarian for a proper diagnosis. They can identify any underlying medical conditions that may contribute to the smell and recommend appropriate treatments. Medicated Shampoos: Use specially formulated medicated shampoos designed to combat skin infections and reduce odors. These shampoos often contain antibacterial or antifungal agents to help treat underlying causes of fishy smells. Follow the instructions provided by your veterinarian or the product manufacturer. Dietary Supplements: Certain dietary supplements can help promote healthy skin and coat, reducing fishy odors. Omega-3 fatty acids, for example, have anti-inflammatory properties and can improve overall skin health. Consult your veterinarian for recommendations on suitable supplements for your Golden Retriever. Specialized Grooming Techniques: Consider using specific grooming techniques that help address fishy smells. For example, regular ear cleaning using veterinarian-recommended solutions can prevent or treat ear infections that contribute to odor. Additionally, proper anal gland expression performed by a professional groomer or veterinarian can help alleviate odor issues. Addressing Hormonal Imbalances: If hormonal imbalances are causing fishy smells, your veterinarian may suggest appropriate treatments or medications to restore balance. This could involve hormone replacement therapy or other medical interventions. Allergy Management: Allergies can contribute to skin infections and odors. If your Golden Retriever has allergies, work with your veterinarian to identify and manage the allergens. This may involve dietary changes, allergen avoidance, or medications to control allergy symptoms and prevent associated odor issues. Regularly wash bedding, vacuum areas where your dog spends time, and keep their living space free from excessive moisture or odorous substances that could contribute to fishy smells. Remember, the appropriate cure or remedy depends on the underlying cause of the fishy smell. This could indicate a chronic issue like a skin infection or an anal gland problem. Changes in Behavior: If your dog is licking or scratching excessively at one area, or if they seem more tired than usual, these could be signs of an underlying problem causing the odor. Physical Changes: Redness, swelling, or discharge in any area of the body, particularly around the ears, mouth, or anus, should be evaluated by a vet. Digestive Issues: Issues like constipation, diarrhea, or unusual stool such as very hard, very soft, or oddly colored stool can be signs of a larger problem. These symptoms, especially when accompanied by a bad smell, should prompt a vet visit. Eating or Drinking Changes: If your dog has suddenly lost their appetite, or seems to be drinking an excessive amount of water, these changes could be indicative of a health issue. Conclusion Managing and preventing unpleasant odors in your Golden Retriever is an important part of maintaining their overall health and wellbeing. Regular grooming, a balanced diet, and attention to dental hygiene can go a long way in preventing fishy smells. Remember, Golden Retrievers are not just pets, but members of our families, and their health and happiness directly contribute to our own. While this is not always the case, the smell may indicate an underlying issue such as allergies, hormonal imbalances, or a skin infection. Bathing your Golden Retriever regularly with mild shampoo can help prevent fishy smells. There are a few home remedies you can try if you want to get rid of fishy odors in your Golden Retriever. Grooming your dog regularly, using deodorizing sprays or powders, and washing bedding and fabric items can help. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Beloved for their sleek coat, friendliness, and intelligence, the Golden Retriever is one of the most well-known dogs in the world. Originally bred in Scotland as gundogs, their work ethic and friendliness make them excel at a variety of jobs. Since their smell is usually a result of bad hygiene or the wrong diet, the odor that they can develop is relatively easy to manage. There are several reasons that Golden Retrievers might start to stink. Here are a few common causes of unpleasant smells. A lack of proper nutrition in their dog food, food allergies, or simply not enough healthy ingredients in the formula can be causes of ill health in dogs. Health Issue An infection can be a reason that your Golden Retriever smells. Certain types of allergies or even a build-up of moisture can create the perfect spot for yeast infections to form. Certain yeast infections, particularly ear infections, can give off an unpleasant smell. Internal health issues can be the cause too, so you should pay attention to any other symptoms that your dog might show. Image Credit: pixels, Shutterstock 3. Improper Grooming When it comes to grooming, Golden Retrievers are among the higher-maintenance breeds, especially if they spend time retrieving ducks from ponds. They have thick, double coats that are designed to keep them warm but can also cling to dirt and body oils that can quickly make them smell. If your dog spends a great deal of time out in wet, marshy areas hunting ducks with you, their fur can get clogged with all sorts of dirty water, leaf matter, and mud. They might have even found a pungent-smelling substance to roll in just for fun! Healthy Diet The higher quality your chosen dog food brand is, the more likely it is to be healthier for your dog. You can also try formulas that focus on natural ingredients or subscription services that use fresh meals rather than kibble and canned food. Image Credit: Chendongshan, Shutterstock 2. Consider bathing your Golden Retriever too. A bath once a month or less should be more than ample, but keep an eye out for any signs of sensitive skin. Regular Grooming Brushing your Golden Retriever once or twice a week with a good slicker brush or dematter will help remove trapped dirt and dead hair. Regular grooming sessions are also ideal for reducing shedding and keeping your dog smelling nicer between baths. You can even spoil your favorite pooch with a trip to a professional groomer for a spa session. Image By: pixels, Shutterstock 5. Washing your dog is only one step in ensuring that they smell clean; you need to wash their bedding too. Not only does this remove any lingering odors, but it also gets rid of the dirt and bacteria that your dog leaves behind when they use their bed. Baths at least once a month or every six weeks are recommended to keep their coat clean of dirt and bacteria that can cause unpleasant smells. This will remove dead hair and skin cells in general and dirt from their skin, coat, and favorite blankets. Yeast overgrowth Ear infections Allergies can come from environmental or dietary triggers. If you suspect that your Golden Retriever has allergies, you should make an appointment with your vet for further investigation. Once your vet runs some tests or trials, you can pinpoint and eliminate the trigger. Here are some tips to keep them tidied up. Practice Regular Bathing Dogs need baths a whole lot less than us—but they do start stinking after a while. On average, you should bathe your Golden Retriever as frequently as most other canines—every weeks. Golden Retrievers can have allergy issues or sensitivities to certain shampoos. As a precaution, you could immediately start by using fragrance-free shampoos. Overbathing can cause other issues, like dandruff and dry skin. This can lead to excessive itching. Try to bathe your dog no more than once a month. For Goldens with extra sensitive skin, you might have to wait 6 weeks or longer in between. Image Credit: Autri Taheri, Unsplash 2. Brushing has lots of benefits that promote blood circulation, oil production, and good hygiene. But also, brushing helps loosen and remove dirt and debris that can get stuck in the coat. Since this breed has a double coat, occasionally brushing deeply with a de-shedding tool can help combat dander, matting, and shedding. If properly managed with brushing, your Golden can smell good for longer between baths. Keep Up with Oral Hygiene Does anyone like a full face of hot, stinky breath in their face? Just like humans, your Golden should brush their teeth every day. To combat the aromatic vapors burning holes in your olfactory sense, practice regular brushing as early as you can. Even though puppy teeth will inevitably fall out to make way for larger canines, it can be a trial run to familiarize themselves with the process. Image Credit: Littlekidmoment, Shutterstock 4. Offer Dry Baths You could always try a bath between baths, so to speak. Corn starch or powder will do the trick, too, as the substance absorbs oil. You should always be careful with this method, however, as Goldens are prone to having sensitive skin. Try to go fragrance, dye, and chemical-free if you can. Choose the Correct Diet Believe it or not, diet plays a very vital role in how your dog smells. Lots of dogs suffer from some type of food allergy, which can cause yeast to grow on the skin. Cleaner ingredients, as you might guess, equal less smelliness. The general rule of thumb here is—the more natural, the better. That means the higher quality of the diet, the better shape your dog will be in. Many vets and professionals recommend raw food diets, as it mimics their dietary ancestry. Image Credit: jagdprinzessin, Pixabay 6. Your goldie can go see their stylist roughly every 6 weeks. They can get in deep, making your pup feel fresh from their bare skin to the tips of their fur. Why not splurge on occasion? However, if they still have the dirt and grime on their blankets, dog beds, and doggy clothes—they are going to get dirty pretty quickly. Leftover smells remain on the blankets and bedding, causing dirt, debris, bacteria, and skin particles to collect on the material. If your dog lays in the bed, the same smelliness will find your dog again. If you implement good grooming habits, you can keep a clean smelling dog with no lingering odors. Oral health is just as important! Next on your reading list:. April 8, Do you own a golden retriever? If so, you may have noticed that they can sometimes smell bad. However, the breed is known for being prone to developing an odor. Their coat can harbor dirt, bacteria, and other things that can cause them to smell bad, even fishy at times. This is a difficult question to answer. All dogs have different natural smells, and some breeds are known for being more smelly than others. For example, basset hounds are known for their strong odor, while poodles are not. Golden retrievers fall somewhere in the middle. They are not as smelly as some breeds, but they are certainly not odor-free. There are a few different things that can cause golden retrievers to smell bad. This is one of the least likely reasons your Golden may be stinking up your house. But, it is possible. For example, if your Golden is eating a lot of fish, he may start to smell like one! If your dog has allergies, they may manifest in their skin and cause them to have an odor. This is especially true for food allergies. Yeast infections: Yeast infections are common in dogs, and they can often cause a bad smell. These infections can occur on the skin, in the ears, or even in the gut. If your dog has a yeast infection, he may have a musty smell. These can be treated with anti fungal medications, but you should always consult your veterinarian first. Skin infections: Skin infections are another common cause of odor in dogs. These can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or even allergies. If your dog has a skin infection, he may have a foul smell, usually accompanied by itchiness. These can be treated with antibiotics or other medications, but you should always consult your veterinarian first. Rolling in smelly dirt: This one is pretty self-explanatory. This is often the case with dogs who love to play outside. Dogs are especially attracted to the scent of dead worms and other small creatures. So, if you live in an area with a lot of these critters, your dog may be more likely to roll in their scent. Goldens need to be brushed regularly at least once a day to prevent their fur from harboring dirt and bacteria. How often you bathe them should depend on how dirty they get. For example, if your Golden lives in the water a lot, their fur can harbor that dampness and mildew smell if not properly dried after swimming or playing in the rain. Health problems: Some health problems can cause dogs to develop an unpleasant odor. For example, kidney disease and diabetes can both lead to a fruity or sweet smell. Brush them regularly and bathe them as needed. A good rule of thumb is to brush them at least once a day and bathe them every three to four weeks. Over bathing can actually strip the natural oils from their skin and make them more susceptible to skin infections. Use a quality dog shampoo: When you do bathe your Golden, be sure to use a quality dog shampoo. Human shampoo is not designed for dogs and can cause irritation. Look for a shampoo that is designed explicitly for Golden Retrievers or other dogs with sensitive skin. Use dry dog shampoo: Yes, they make such a thing! They work by absorbing the oils and dirt from their fur. Ear infections are one of the most common causes of foul odor in dogs. You can usually tell if your dog has an ear infection if they are shaking their head a lot or scratching at their ears. If you suspect your dog has an ear infection, take them to the vet right away. Brush their teeth: Just like humans, dogs need to have their teeth brushed regularly. This helps prevent plaque and tartar buildup, which can lead to bad breath. You can use a special dog toothbrush and toothpaste or just a regular toothbrush do not use human toothpaste on your dog. Invest in a good quality dog food: A healthy diet is essential for all dogs, but it can be especially helpful in reducing odor. Make sure you take your dog to the vet to rule out any allergies if the suspected stench is coming from their diet. Keep any personal items, dog beds, blankets, fav stuffed animals clean: These items can hold on to smells, so be sure to wash them regularly. A good rule of thumb is to wash dog beds and blankets every two weeks and stuffed animals once a month. There could be an underlying health issue causing the odor. Otherwise, enjoy your sweet-smelling Golden! Do you have any tips for keeping golden retrievers smelling fresh and clean? Related Posts:. Feb 1, Jul 9, This post may contain affiliate links. All dogs have a distinctive dog smell, just as all humans have a distinctive human smell. Some people like the natural smell of dogs, or at least tolerate it, while others hate it. Over the years we read about Vizslas. If stinky dog smell is the only thing stopping you from getting a dog do some research on Vizslas. In general, there is very little you can do about the fact that your dog smells like, well, a dog! It could just be that your golden has particularly oily skin and needs to be bathed more frequently, but it could also be a sign of an infection or other medical issue. Below you will find a list of the main factors that can cause golden retrievers to smell bad. But if their general smell is the same but seems stronger than usual, it might just be that it has been a while since they have had a bath. Over time, the build-up can start to give off a strong smell, especially if there is oil build-up in the folds of their skin. If their smell is becoming too strong for you, then it is time to give your dog a bath. Most vets advise against giving your dog a bath too often because it can leave their skin dry and make it prone to irritation. The standard recommendation for golden retrievers is to bathe them once a month or less often if you can stand the smell. However, if you are using a gentle shampoo designed specifically for your dog, you can get away with bathing them more often if you need to. But regular brushing between washes can also help control their body oil levels, and therefore their smell. They may be too harsh on your dogs coat and skin. This can cause them to start running up against walls and rubbing their body against everything else in an attempt to wipe off the smell. In fact we use this shampoo when our newborn puppies needed a quick bath… week old puppies really like rolling around in their poop… This mild shampoo is designed specifically for puppies, or can be used on older dogs that need regular baths. It also lightly conditions the skin with botanical extracts and is mild enough to use on a regular basis. View Price This mild shampoo is great for dogs that have itchy skin as it soothes with oatmeal and aloe vera. It also includes vanilla bean extract, which is good at combating bad odors. Vitamin E keeps their coat soft and healthy. Infection If your dog has some type of infection, the bacteria or yeast associated with that infection can also be the source of a bad or unusual odor. For example, ear infections are common among dogs like golden retrievers because their long ears cover the ear canal. This creates a nice, dark breeding ground for bacteria, which can in turn result in a very unpleasant smell. Unfortunately, one of our Labs used to have chronic ear infections. Alternatively, if your dog has a skin infection, perhaps associated with allergies , they can scratch a lot and break the skin, creating wounds that can easily become infected and start to smell. Mouth Smell If your dog has an unusually bad smell, give their mouth a sniff and see if it is the source of the odor. Any dental issues can cause bacteria to build up in their mouth, which can smell very bad. Also examine their teeth for any that might be cracked or broken and require a trip to the vet. Smells can emerge up the esophagus and exit through their mouths. This is a signal that you should visit the vet, as related conditions can be serious if not treated promptly. Bad breath can also just be the result of bad dental hygiene. We use and recommend Arm and Hammer toothbrush and toothpaste and our favorite type of chews are bully sticks which themselves will often be quite stinky. Smelly cat dog , smelly dog , what are they feeding you? What you feed your dog could be the cause of his stinky smell. Farting is normal for dogs. Gases build up in the body as a natural part of the digestive processes, and farting is the only way to eliminate that gas. But if your dog is passing gas excessively or the gas has a very bad smell, an underlying health or dietary issue could be to blame. Your dog will often develop digestive issues when you change their food. Despite the fact it seems like they will eat anything and everything, dogs actually have quite sensitive digestive systems, and any sudden change in their diet can cause issues. However, these issues will typically go away on their own once your dog has become accustomed to the new diet. Human food with spices and other ingredients that are not good for your dog, such as onion and garlic, can also upset their stomach. This is one of the many reasons why you should never feed your dog food scraps off your plate despite those adorable, pleading puppy eyes. If their food is not the culprit, then it could be that your dog has an allergy to something specific in their food, and you should consult your vet. It is worth noting here that problems with grains are very rare among dogs, so while you might want to try grain-free dog food, this may not solve the problem. We will usually mix it in with some dry kibble, Wellness Core. Anal Sacs Dogs have two glands either side of their anus that fill up with a bad-smelling substance as part of their digestive process. However, if their anal sacs have become impacted or infected, they may be secreting this bad-smelling substance without pooping. You will probably also notice them licking themselves in this area a lot or scooting to try and give themselves some relief from itchiness. While a problem caused by a mild impaction will probably go away on its own after a day or two, an infection will usually only get worse and can become chronic. In this case, it is time to visit the vet to manually express the anal sacs and deal with the infection. Our older rescue, Linus used to have some anal sac issues. There would be a day or two when we had that fishy smell. Top Tips For Keeping Your Dog Smelling Good While a bad odor can be a sign that something is wrong, a strong dog smell can just be natural for some dogs, especially for dogs with thick coats that like to rough and tumble like golden retrievers. If you just want to keep your golden smelling good in general rather than deal with a specific bad smell, the following tips should help. Give your dog a bath. About once a month with a shampoo for dogs that is balanced for the pH of their skin which is different from the human pH is ideal. Brush their teeth frequently, and daily if possible. This will maintain their dental hygiene and ensure pleasant breath. Check their ears regularly. Remove dirt and debris at least weekly. Wash their bedding regularly. This will remove bacteria and help keep odors under control. If you change their diet, do it gradually by mixing their old food with new food at first so as not to cause excess flatulence. Visit the vet if they start to smell differently for no apparent reason. FAQs Why does my dog stink even after a bath? If your dog is stinky even after a bath, the source of the smell is likely to be something other than their natural body odor. Look for signs of infection, especially around the ears and mouth, as these can be sources of a bad smell. If the stench is coming from their backside, then it could be something in their diet or an infection of the anal sacs. Why is my dog smelling all of a sudden? We washed her and she has no fleas ticks or anything like that. What can it be? She is 9 years old and in good health. Please help. I am going crazy with the smell. A: Golden Retrievers are wonderful dogs, but can often emit a bad odor. Dog odor is most often caused by bacteria or yeast metabolizing secretions, especially skin oils. Places where the skin tends to be moist and dark mouth, ears, skin folds, and under the tail have the highest concentration of yeast and bacteria and the strongest smell. Yeast and bacteria are present on the skin of all pets, even healthy pets, but are kept to a minimum when skin is in good condition. However, when the skin is less healthy, the population of yeast and bacteria can swell. As the numbers increase, so does the smell. Yeast and bacteria cause itching. Dogs scratch and this increases blood flow to the area. Increased blood flow produces inflammation, swelling, and heat so the smell can become even more offensive. You can usually recognize an ear infection by seeing redness, debris and an odor in the ear. Quite often one ear will look much worse than the other. Yeast, bacteria or a combination of the two can cause ear infections. A yeast infection is usually accompanied by a bad smell. These types of infections almost always need to be treated with medication. Chronic ear infections can also be a sign of an underlying condition such as allergies or hypothyroidism. We tend to see this more in dogs that enjoy swimming or have underlying allergies. Lesions and pustules inflamed pus-filled swelling on the skin, and in some cases partial hair loss, often point to infection. Most skin infections, depending on the severity of the infection, need to be treated with weeks of oral antibiotics. Yeast infections in dogs are usually very itchy. The most common areas for these infections are in the armpits and the groin region. The skin will look greasy, thickened almost like elephant skin and often the pigment or color will be darker. Usually a yeast infection will need to be treated with oral antifungal medication. Some dogs have a very large skin fold on either side of their vulva. This skin fold often grows bacteria. A dog with a peri-vulvar skin infection will tend to lick at her genital area. There will often be brown saliva staining around the vulva. If you are noticing an occasional odor then this can be the source. If the glands are smelly all of the time it may be that there is an infection present.

He was a feral dog in Texas in his previous life, and lived with his sister on the edges of society, always between people, surviving by not being caught until one day he was. Suddenly this regal dog found himself trembling on the cold hard floor of a shelter, on the list to be killed. Its easy to understand why its hard for Corbin to feel safe around anyone but other dogs, but for the past year hes been developing an appreciation for life as a domestic house dog and his true character has slowly been emerging. Corbin will always feel most comfortable in the company of other dogs, and loves most of the usual things dogs love. Hes wild about going on walks, especially in the forest, and will happily spend his day hunting and harassing rodents. He loves sprinting freely across a grassy yard now, something he never had the chance to do in Houston. A frozen marrow bone in his crate delights him for a few hours of luxurious chewing. Watching him revel in life is an absolute joy! He enjoys head and butt scratches, and will sometimes even ask for affection. However, the instinct to stay out of reach runs deep in this handsome dog. He will not come when called; he will at best follow other dogs who do, but even then will stay at distance from accompanying humans. He isnt at all aggressive in the least, just very shy and wary. Every day he grows more confident, so much so that now hes ready to take on any bicycles and pickup trucks that have the nerve to pass him on the street. Corbins best life includes a large fenced-in yard and at least one, preferably more, other friendly dogs. Hes pretty curious about most things, even if hes a bit scared, so hed probably do ok in a either suburban or rural environment. A busy city would be too much for someone whos afraid of people getting close enough to touch him. Hes not a dog to adopt if youre looking for someone to play fetch with. Corbins the boy for someone whos content to make a deserving dogs dreams come true, where he can lounge peacefully in the sunshine, chase chippies and explore the neighbourhood with his pack mates. Corbin was born with bad hip dysplasia on one side, and doesnt like to use his rear right leg. He still gets around fine on 3 legs and can run faster than you! He does appreciate a daily pain reliever like gabapentin. Apply to adopt this animal at lastminutedogrescue. Small backyards are not suitable for big dogs like labs. Whether your lab lives outside or inside, make sure that it has a space it can call its own. Include a large, durable dog bed. Your lab will paw at the bed constantly to get comfortable. Cheap beds will rip easily and can cause quite a mess. Giving your labrador its own bed will also help you train it to stay off of yours, if you are so inclined. Labradors are a short-haired breed that come in brown, black, and gold. For most of the year, your lab will remain fairly low maintenance. Brushing your lab will also help remove dirt and spread natural oils throughout. The natural oils in your lab's fur can even help fend off fleas and ticks. Go to source Bathe your lab 3 or 4 times a year or whenever its stench gets too strong. If you take your dog on frequent walks, the hard pavement will naturally file its nails down. You can trim them at home or have a vet do it. In general, you can train your lab to sit still to have its nails trimmed. Just offer it a treat after every successful trip to your at-home doggie nail salon. Eventually, your dog will welcome it. Human nail clippers won't work effectively. Secure your dog's foot in place and then quickly clip off the nail. Do not clip too close to the base of the nail. Doing so can be very painful and cause bleeding. Make sure that the nail does not curve back into the dog's paw or is too sharp to cause accidental damage. Your Labrador's ears can become breeding grounds for bacteria if not cleaned regularly and properly. Check the dog's ears regularly for any excessive or smelly discharge, and seek veterinary advice if you notice anything amiss. If you want to clean the ears, use a specific product designed for the purpose. The more active your lab is the more likely it'll have dental issues. Take your dog to the vet for teeth cleaning 1 or 2 times a year. Routine trips to your vet can also help combat terrible breath. Since you are on the receiving end of so many slobbery kisses, this issue has probably crossed your mind and therefore is just one more reason why you should have your lab's teeth cleaned. Several kinds of toothpaste are available, many of which come in tasty flavors - e. Introduce the brush into your dog's mouth gently. Use your fingers to lift your dog's lips in order to expose their teeth. Work the brush in circles and go from tooth to tooth. Its back teeth will be the most difficult to get to, so save them for last. Make sure that you brush both sides of each tooth. Reward you dog with a treat afterwards. Every dog needs certain core vaccinations on a regular basis. It is a good idea to take your dog to the vet at least twice a year for routine exams to monitor its health and to establish a good relationship with your veterinary staff. If your pet should get hurt or is not acting normally, it is always a good idea to visit the veterinarian for an exam and medical care if needed. Your vet will also prescribe necessary medicines topical and supplemental to help ward off parasites like fleas and ticks. A nutritious diet, regular exercise, grooming, preventive measures and regular visits to the vet are the real key to maintaining a high level of wellness and good health. All these actions are your responsibility and solely under your control. Daily routines will be diet control, exercise and physical inspections. Weekly routines will be grooming, ears, eyes, teeth and nail care. Quarterly routines could be shared between visits to the vet, a canine dentist and bathing. And the annual routine will be vaccinations. Just remember that prevention is always better than cure, so doing your best to prevent any illness and catching problems at the earliest possible stage is the goal to aim for. The following are all areas where you only need a little knowledge to effectively take care of your Labrador well. And if you cannot dedicate this time and effort, then in the nicest possible way, you might be better suited to a pet with less demanding care requirements such as goldfish. Making Safe Your Home and Garden Labradors are a lively and inquisitive breed, especially during their first three years so you need to keep dangerous household items out of their reach. Conceal electrical wiring…we all know of their infamous love for chewing. Sharp teeth and electricity do not mix! A Labrador can easily choke on wrappings or trash that may be swallowed along with edible scraps. Labs are smart and opening cupboards and drawers soon becomes easy for them. Be mindful of the toxicity of certain plants — Over plants have been identified as toxic to dogs , so be sure to research any plant before bringing it into your home. Fence of any ponds or pools in your yard. These are just a few points to consider around your home and garden, there are many more. Just try to put yourself in your Labradors shoes and take a good look at his environment as he would see it. Try to see how he could get into trouble and take measures to prevent it. Brushing also helps to shake loose dirt out of and spread the natural oils throughout their coat for that desirable, healthy glossy look we know and love. Frequent baths will strip their oils, leaving them prone to wet and cold in winter, causing dry skin and making their coat look dull and not shiny. Keeping Nails Trim Most Labradors will need a nail trim every 2 to 3 months, although some may never need it. Regularly walking your dog on hard ground, especially sidewalks and roads, will have a natural filing effect and keep your dogs claws in order. This can make them sore and bleed. Ear Care What with a Labradors slightly drooping ears and their love of water, the inside of their ears can sometimes retain too much moisture, causing bacteria to build up and infections to form. I shall be writing an article on this very soon. Just some of the problems a Labrador may have with its teeth are gum disease, loose teeth, cracked or broken teeth, root abscesses and a build up of tartar. These can be very uncomfortable for your dog and can lead to further problems if neglected. Therefore, you need to inspect their teeth regularly, take measures to clean their teeth and even visit a professional canine dentist every 6 months or annually for a thorough check up and any necessary treatments. Treat their teeth like you would your own. Dealing with Parasites Controlling fleas, ticks and other parasites is essential for keeping your Labrador healthy. Immediate problems include extreme irritation and skin sores, but extreme infestations can lead to more dangerous problems including Lyme disease and tape worms. If you stick to a regular grooming schedule as you should! Simply brush your hand against the lie of your Labradors fur and watch for any small moving dots and check for any clearly visible ticks. There are many safe and effective over-the-counter flea control products , many of which contain formulations to prevent ticks at the same time. Finally, depending on where you live in the world, you may need to put your Labrador on medication for heartworm. Where mosquitoes are a problem, they can pass on heartworm and this can be fatal. Even the medicine for heartworm makes your dog very ill so prevention is definitely better than cure! Diseases such as distemper, rabies, hepatitis and parvoviros to name just a few. Your puppy will have had his first shots at five or six weeks before you got to take him home, and he will need a few further shots over a period of up to 18 weeks. A rabies shot usually follows at 6 months of age or so. After this, your adult Labrador will need just a single booster each year to stay protected. For many facts on vaccinations and the schedule you should follow when vaccinating your puppy, please click here. Dogs need a balance of vitamins, minerals, fats and proteins different to that of a human and feeding them on human leftovers can lead to malnutrition, as can a diet based on cheap filler packed dog food. You should perform a little research to find and use a recognized healthy brand of dog food that will cater to your Labradors needs. To help with this, please see our articles that list 4 of the best foods for Labrador puppies opens in new window or the best dog foods for adult Labradors opens in new window …yours really will thrive on these handpicked, quality foods! Additionally, the best thing you can do is set up a feeding schedule for your dog, twice per day being the recommended, and be mindful of any extra treats. Your Lab should always be well fed but not over-fed. I shall discuss this more in a later article. An Important Note On Drastic Changes In Eating And Drinking Habits If your dog is off their food, drinks way too much or way too little for a period of time more than 36 hours, you should call your vet as this is almost surely a sign of an underlying problem. They are voracious eaters and will eat just because they can, not because they need it. Excess weight can lead to all sorts of issues including arthritis and heart problems. To prevent this, control their diet and give them plenty of exercise for them to burn off those calories. They really do need very little exercise of just a few short minutes a couple of times per day. Too much exercise for a puppy can cause skeletal formation issues and plays a large part in joint problems. Take it easy until your puppy is at least a year old. Bedding and Shelter A Labrador should always have a soft surface to lay upon. To prevent this you should get your Lab a large sized dog bed or line a crate to offer a soft and comfortable place to rest. If your Lab spends any amount of time outside, you must provide shelter to offer an escape from the sun in summer, and preferably the shelter should have a raised floor so the wet and cold is kept away in winter. If your Lab puppy gets used to sleeping in a bed of yours or your children, it will be a hard habit to break and will more than likely end in separation anxiety and night-time whining. You want your Labrador to be comfortable alone for periods of time and should start forming this habit ASAP. Training The importance of training your Labrador cannot be overstated. A dog is a dog and not a human. You need to teach your dog how to behave and what your instructions are asking them to do. Before a puppy can become a trusted, well-behaved dog they have a lot of learning to do…and you a lot of teaching! To learn from the written word, I am part way through building the ultimate resource in the form of this site. Routines for feeding, exercise, grooming and visits to the vet are all easily managed with a little knowledge and by planning a schedule in advance and sticking to it. Spending quality time with your Lab is also key, especially regular grooming sessions. You should also attempt to learn your dogs normal living habits, how much he eats, drinks and sleeps. Where your puppy should sleep the first night When it comes to sleeping at night, your puppy will have some difficulties. This may be due to the new environment and new people. They may feel unprotected and disoriented. For this reason, it's normal to hear them cry as they may be calling their mother for guidance and company. Now that you've adopted this puppy, this is your job as their human companion. When they call out, try to be there for them as they are scared and lonely. Be understanding as your puppy learns to adapt to their new home. As a puppy is very dependent and on their first night they will feel scared and disoriented, it's best they sleep near you on their first night. Remember that puppies tend to sleep with their siblings and their mother. Being alone in a new place for the first time will be difficult for them. The best option for your new puppy is to sleep in their own bed inside your room, near you. So that if they feel scared or lost and cry, you can let them know that you are there with them. Once they feel more oriented and safe in their new home, you can move their bed to another location where they can sleep. Learn more in our article where we elaborate on how to prepare for your puppy's first night in their new home. What to feed your Labrador retriever puppy When feeding your Labrador retriever puppy, you will need to provide them with a rich and balanced diet. Keep in mind that puppies begin weaning when they are around weeks old. This means that they will slowly transition from their mother's milk to a solid food canine diet. A natural canine diet mainly consists in essential fatty acids and meat-based protein. The protein should have two or three types of protein from meat. For example: whole chicken, lamb, beef and fish. For fat sources, you can opt for chicken fat. Good fat sources can solute some of the most important vitamins a dog needs. When it comes to carbs, it should be kept in a low amount as dogs thrive on meat. If you are cooking for your dog, then we recommend to include low amounts of whole carbs, such as sweet potatoes. Lastly, you can offer some fruits and vegetables that provide good vitamins and minerals to help your dog's over-all health. Training your Labrador retriever puppy Labrador Retrievers are very active and intelligent dogs. Other than daily exercise, they will need basic dog training. Yes, even as a puppy! You can begin training your dog with paper training. Learn more about that in our article about paper training for puppies. Exercising your Labrador retriever puppy Your Labrador retriever puppy will needs plenty of exercise. Due to their small size as a puppy, this will mostly be at home. They will begin by playing with their siblings and walking or running around the house. Then, after their first round of vaccinations, usually around the age of 7 weeks old, puppies will begin to go outside. This is a very important part of their puppyhood as they will learn to go out on walks with their caregivers and will begin their socialization period. During this period, they will meet and interact with new people and other dogs. They will also explore new places. It's very important that during this period they have good interactions and don't get traumatized. When a puppy is well socialized from a young age, they will have a balanced temperament as adult dogs. Learn more in our article about socializing puppies. Hygiene care Next, we're going to talk about maintaining our puppy's hygiene. As Labrador puppies haven't grown their full coat, they won't need to be brushed regularly just yet. A bath is only necessary when they get very dirty on their outdoor walks. Dental hygiene is also important when it comes to caring for a puppy. You can opt for a dog tooth paste or a dental canine treat. Talk to your veterinarian to see which would be best for you puppy, and learn more in our article about dental hygiene for dogs. Other than that, we must make sure that their everyday environment is also clean and that we refresh their water bowl everyday. This way, our puppy will have great personal hygiene and we can help them prevent certain health issues from a young age. Health care Lastly, we're going to talk about your Labrador retriever's health. The Labrador Retriever is a relatively healthy and long-living dog, especially if they stay in shape. However, the lack of genetic diversity resulting from breeding programs makes them prone to certain hereditary diseases and conditions , which are usually manifested as the dog grows old. For instance, Labradors tend to suffer from hip dysplasia. When your Lab is a puppy, you must ensure they get the necessary vaccines, and you must follow their vaccination schedule during the rest of their lives. This will prevent them from suffering very serious diseases that tend to affect dogs. If you want your dog to stay as healthy as possible, go to the vet for check-ups every 6 months. You can prevent the development of common diseases by watching your Lab for symptoms and caring for them as best as you can. Labrador Retrievers are prone to obesity - they love treats, and if they don't get enough exercise they will soon become overweight, with the related muscular and joint problems. When To Collect Your Puppy We highly recommend that puppies are not removed from their breeder until they are 8 weeks old. There are lots of good reasons for this. It helps puppies develop good bite moderation skills before they are adopted into a family, ensures that they are ready to adapt quickly to their new life. And it helps to reduce the sad numbers of puppies bred for a quick profit. Puppies sold under seven weeks old often have health problems and need special care, and extra veterinary attention. Check out the following articles for further information: When can puppies leave their mother Your first puppy Your first puppy is a huge adventure. You have so much fun ahead. Labradors are generally very friendly dogs, but they can also be very distractible. So do start daily training games, using plenty of food. You can get regular training tips from Pippa by email, using the box below. Non-slip bottom dog dishes Puppies naturally move their dish around as they are eating, especially if the dish has a flat bottom that easily pushes around the floor. We have found that dishes with a non-slip bottom can help so that your puppy is not chasing around his food dish. Make sure that it is large enough. And since dogs grow fast, that means they will likely grow to that size within a year to a year and a half. Almost all dogs we train eat between 4 -6 cups of dog food a day. So, make sure that your dish is large enough to accommodate this many cups. Water dish It is vitally important that your puppy have access to clean water for drinking. With the puppies we raise, we have found that it can be challenging to keep a small water dish full, so we prefer to use these 2-gallon water dishes. They are easy to fill and allow us to only have to fill them a couple times a week instead of several times a day. We suggest that you introduce a lead to your puppy as they start to grow in confidence and walk further from you when outside. There are two great reasons to do this early on. First it teaches your puppy how to handle the pressure of not being able to go wherever they want whenever they want. And it keeps your puppy from developing a habit of running away from you. A Flexi-lead works especially well if you want to give your puppy a little more freedom to go do his potty business but still keep control. Toys Puppies need toys. If you do not give them toys that they CAN chew and play with, they will chew on your sofa leg, or a book or a blanket or anything else they can find. So, purchase some good durable puppy chew toys. But watch your pup carefully. As they get older and stronger, they will be able to rip apart cloth toys and ingest them. Or they will chew rubber toys into small pieces and eat them. When your pup gets strong enough to destroy toys, it is time to take away the puppy toys and give them only dog toys designed for older , larger dogs or quality rawhides that they can chew that will not cause digestive problems. Stay away from rope toys. Many puppies have managed to ingest strings and ropes requiring surgery to remove them. Puppy-sized bumper If your plan is for your Labrador puppy to become a hunting or competition dog, you should have a puppy sized bumper. Learn more about teaching your puppy to fetch in this post. Barriers I recommend that you section off a small portion of your home and not let your puppy have full run of the entire house. Learn more about housebreaking your Lab puppy in this post. To section off a part, it can be helpful to have some child-gates available or an area of your home that you can close doors. This means that you need to show your puppy where the boundaries are and what is and is not allowed. To do this, you will need a few more tools. This is often when we see dogs that are running away from their owners, playing keep-a-way when retrieving and just basically being naughty. A lot of this could be avoided with the use of a check cord. Yes, a check cord can be cumbersome and often a pain to use, but it only takes one or two times of your puppy running away from you to make it worth it. Put a check cord on your puppy and allow them to drag it around with them. This alone is a great lesson for a dog. Dragging the weight is a type of pressure that they will need to learn to deal with. Occasionally, step on the rope and allow your dog to feel the pressure of being stopped and controlled. These sound like such minor things, but you would be surprised how much more well-adjusted your puppy will be just from learning these minor lessons. Chain or prong collar As your puppy gets stronger, it will get more and more difficult to control your puppy with a lead just hooked up to a nylon collar. As you notice that your puppy is getting harder to control, is pulling you around or dragging you down the street, you need to move to a chain or prong collar. Actually, it would be best if you changed to a chain or prong collar long before this becomes an issue. Remember, it is always easier to fix problems when they are small rather than waiting for them to become huge problems. Larger bumpers for retrieving dogs As your dog gets larger, you will want to move away from the puppy bumper and start using regular sized retrieving bumpers. We prefer to use plastic or rubber bumpers since they do not get as dirty or smelly as the canvas ones. They also last a lot longer and can be used for both water and land retrieves. Learn all about the different bumpers used for training hunting dogs here. Orange is a color that is difficult for retrievers to see, so that color should not be used for young dogs that are just learning about retrieving and hunting. Save the orange ones for advanced dogs working on blind retrieves. Final thoughts on What do I need to buy for a Lab puppy? There are many things that you will need for your new puppy both now and in the future. I would be happy to discuss your goals for your retriever and tell you about the programs I offer. Until next time happy retrieving. What do I need to buy for a Lab puppy? However, a healthy six-month-old labrador will grow significantly in size. Some of them can weigh up to 50 pounds. For a more balanced diet at six months, you can shift from feeding your puppy three smaller meals per day to two meals a day. To counteract this, you can drop the amount of food and gradually increase it. Setting Your Lab Puppy Up for Successful Potty Training Training an animal to control their bladders until you get outside is no different than potty-training for toddlers. In other words, crate training speeds up the potty-training process for your pet. Effective crate training depends on two things: Praising and rewarding your puppy for relieving itself outside. They come to understand this as a desirable behavior. Preventing your puppy from going to the toilet within the home. So, why is using a crate to train your puppy to go outside so effective? Initially, this should be every hour or so. As labs grow older, you can reduce the frequency as they learn to hold and release independently. Step 2: House Training a Lab Puppy Housetraining or potty-training small labs can be, well, frustrating. As a pet owner, there are simple ways to train your puppy to understand ideal behavior quickly. Instead, they simply forget that they should control it. This helps avoid any issues early on. Keep small labrador puppies off the carpet. How to Feed Your Dog for Optimal Growth Feeding your labrador puppy a balanced diet could be an entire guide all on its own. It can feel overwhelming because you do have many options when it comes to feeding your dog. For example, if you work from home, it would be easy to feed your dog homemade dog food. Similarly, you might work a and yet want to reap the health-related benefits of a raw diet. Make sure to speak to your vet first. You do have choices for what to feed your puppy and you can mix and match these. Popular feeding options for any animal include kibble, wet food, raw food, and home-cooked food. Remember, a puppy is still growing, and they need a complete profile of nutrients and minerals to support their development. There are many commercial brands of dry food or kibble to choose from and you can adjust what you buy based on the ingredients. Do your research and find a brand you trust, with as much bioavailable nutritional content as is helpful. These can harm your puppy. In order to maintain good health and prevent simple ailments, your puppy can also benefit from taking a supplement. Some families choose to mix scraps or raw food with kibble to provide moisture and decrease the amount of food versus the calories consumed. Any veterinarian will tell you that a hard and fast rule is not necessarily the type of food but the amount. Obesity is a condition that can lead to many health issues for this breed. Over-exertion, especially for a puppy, is possible. This includes activities like playing fetch or tug and release. However, breeds that worked as a hunting companion for humans love to be active. Again, this goes back to the strengths of the breed. Keeping up with your puppy could be a task-and-a-half, so in the first months of life, you should be keeping them in your backyard or playing with them at home. As they become house trained and get all their vaccinations, you can turn walks into light jogs or runs if you want. In the long-term, exercise will help keep dogs healthy and disease-free. However, early dog training can eliminate common problems with puppy temperament and help make sure that your fur friend is always as friendly and happy as possible through the years. Puppy socialization simply means making your puppy open to and familiar with new experiences. You want to provide stimulation and encounters with experiences that they will probably face as adults. The window of opportunity to make sure your puppy is always a happy and friendly pooch closes around 14 weeks. Pre-Vaccination Lab Puppy Socialization Any veterinarian will tell you that a puppy is all done with their vaccinations after 12 weeks of age. The main point is to keep your puppy away from other dogs who may not yet be vaccinated or the excrement and markings of other animals that could carry data diseases. You can head to an off-leash dog park to allow them to explore and meet other fur friends. You can also take them beyond your backyard to the countryside to enable them to swim or set up obstacle courses and play with them. Another thing that people forget about is spaying or neutering their dogs. Spaying or neutering your dog could help with behavioral issues and can also reduce the onset of certain health conditions. At the same time, spaying or neutering a puppy too early may also lead to health issues. For many people, this is a worthwhile and even enjoyable trade-off. A happy, sociable dog is always the result of consistent training. Training your dog is a significant aspect of their early years. The different stages include: Get it — Using positive reinforcement, trainers will help your dog carry out actions without commands. Teach it — This stage harnesses the progress you made in the previous stages. Your dog now knows the word and the action that goes with it. Proof it — Proofing is where many people get stuck. Your dog will learn to listen and obey commands at this stage even when they are engaged in other things. Maintain it — Consistently using the techniques you learned to keep your dog following the same desirable behavior. All breeds of dogs respond best when you train them. Every labrador retriever relies on their human taking control and showing them how to respond in any situation. You can be sure that if you follow these tips that you will be taking proper care of your new puppy and will be able to make sure that your puppy will live a long and healthy life. Share on.

french bulldog puppies for sale near buffalo ny - About Grey French Bulldog: setting the facts straight Breed standard French Bulldogs are white, cream, fawn, or a combination of these colors. Colors other than these are classed as anomalous, including the blue French Bulldog more commonly referred to as grey or gray. The grey French Bulldog is a standard French Bulldog with a non-standard coat color. Grey fur is simply a diluted version of black and occurs when a French Bulldog inherits a dilution gene from each of its parents. Grey coats are linked to certain health conditions that tend to be misunderstood. CDA is a recessive genetic condition associated with Frenchies who have two copies of the recessive dilution gene which causes their grey coats. It can be managed with prescribed products from your vets such as shampoo and skin lotion. Grey French Bulldogs can also develop any health conditions that other color Frenchies are prone to, including: Allergies. These are often skin allergies and can be triggered by food or environmental factors Brachycephalic-related problems. Dogs with short muzzles often suffer from these problems which include breathing difficulties. Cherry Eye. This is related to the third eyelid that can move out of position. Cleft Palate. This is usually genetic and manifests as a problem with the opening in the roof of the mouth. This is a genetic condition and is more common in the white French Bulldog. Degenerative Myelopathy. This is a serious problem that affects the spine and tends to affect older dogs. A genetic problem related to the eyelid, affecting how it grows. Another hereditary problem affecting the eyelids. Heat Exhaustion. The French Bulldog cannot regulate its temperature easily which can lead to serious health problems if not addressed quickly. This causes deformity of the spine and is present at birth. Hip Dysplasia. A hip condition that causes mobility problems and can require surgery. Patellar Luxation. This is a painful condition where the kneecap dislocates or develops in an abnormal position. Stenotic Nares. This is a narrowing of the nostrils. Tracheal Collapse. A respiratory disease related to the windpipe. A bleeding disorder, similar to Hemophilia. Do grey French Bulldogs shed? All dogs shed, even the short-haired French Bulldog and because grey Frenchies develop CDA, they can lose more hair than other colors. Regular grooming removes loose hair that would otherwise be lost around your home. Correct treatment of CDA can also help to prevent excess shedding. What makes a French Bulldog grey or gray or blue? In order for a French Bulldog to have a grey coat, it must carry two copies of a recessive gene known as the dilution gene. This gene is termed recessive because its effects are only visible when a puppy inherits two copies: one from its mother and one from its father. Grey coloring is, in effect, a dilute version of black and is sometimes referred to as blue because it has a bluish tint in certain lights. There are many different shades of grey Frenchie, ranging from very pale to dark slate. There are also several patterns that include a blue color. The color ranges from light silvery grey to almost black slate grey. This Frenchie coat has no other markings at all and the dog usually has matching blue or grey eyes. A Blue Brindle French Bulldog has blue or grey fur with brindle striping. This pattern is sometimes referred to as tiger-striped. In blue Frenchies, these darker brindle patterns often only become apparent once puppies reach 4 weeks of age. You will see a blue pied Frenchie with a slightly lower percentage of white background at times. Blue Fawn A French Bulldog with mostly fawn fur and a mask of blue fur around its muzzle, eyes, and ears is referred to as Blue Fawn. Blue Fawn French Bulldogs are very sought after and difficult to come by because they are relatively rare. It is rare because merle dogs are difficult to breed. This pretty Frenchie has what is known as a merle gene which removes pigment from random patches of their blue coats. The result is a random patched pattern of white fur among what otherwise would have been a solid blue coat color. Are Blue French Bulldogs rare? A French Bulldog only develops a blue or grey coat if it inherits two copies of the rare dilution gene. Of the five blue coat patterns, the rarest is the blue merle. Dog coat genetics are complex and it takes a lot of selective breeding to attempt to breed-specific colors and still the outcome cannot be guaranteed. Reputable breeders concentrate on producing healthy Frenchies as opposed to specific colors, so coats such as blue or grey will always remain rarer than others. What is a grey French Bulldog called? Blue is simply the official name given to grey-colored fur. Grey is not a breed standard French Bulldog color but when this color does occur as a solid coat or within a coat pattern it is officially referred to as blue. This is the same for grey in any other dog breed. A certain shade of grey does have a blue tint, but many are much paler with more of a silver appearance. How much is a grey French Bulldog? It is difficult to predict an exact price for a French Bulldog because it depends on variables such as availability, color, bloodlines, and demand. Why are grey French bulldogs so expensive? French Bulldogs are not straightforward to breed and this makes them expensive to produce. The fact that grey Frenchies are rare and in high demand means French Bulldog breeders can charge more for them. In this breed, the dogs most likely to have bright blue eyes are Blue Merle Frenchies and this is related to their specific genetics. Frenchies can also be a bit smelly but there are ways to manage this. Temperament A grey French bulldog possesses the same gentle, friendly temperament as those with other coat colors. They are great dogs to have around children because of their playful , outgoing natures. All in all this dog is suitable for any household, from family homes to apartments. Just make sure their needs are being met and they will be happy. Whilst they are happy with nearly any activity make sure to avoid swimming. Their top-heavy bodies can act as an anchor, making pools and lakes dangerous for this dog. These dogs would rather surf TV channels than waves! Number of Walks Per Day: .Grooming and Shedding When it comes to grooming they are fairly low maintenance. For their bluish gray coat, a quick brush with a rubber glove every other day with a monthly bath are all it needs. Their wrinkles need extra attention. Be sure to clean their faces weekly with dog-safe wipes as food and bacteria can get caught in between their folds. Cleaning those bat ears is a must to prevent infection, as well as maintaining proper dental hygiene. Because they are not the most active breed pay attention to their nails and trim them if they do not wear down on their own. Feeding and Diet As they are an inactive breed keep track of their diet. Overfeeding can lead to them gaining weight due to their low activity levels. This dog should not exceed 28 pounds as extra weight can put stress on their joints. Checking with your vet is a great way to gauge how much food your dog needs as well as what type of food would be best for them. Avoid kibble brands with excess fillers or by-products. An experimental study observed that obese dogs who were on a weight loss program better conserved lean body mass while on a high-protein diet. Due to their flat faces they can have respiratory issues. You can hear this through their snorting and labored breathing in hot weather or after exercise. In addition Blue French Bulldogs are susceptible to spine malformations and can be born with hemivertebrae or abnormally shaped spine bones. As well as some skin issues, there is the risk of color dilution alopecia. This can result in self-destruction of the follicle and permanent hair loss. No breed is entirely free of health problems but Blue French Bulldogs need extra research when it comes to finding a reputable breeder. Be sure to invest in good health insurance in case any of these issues arise later in life. If you plan ahead, you could get reimbursed for every vet bill from now on. What is a Grey French Bulldog?
