Puppy Pad Potty Training Potty training with puppy pads involves covering the floor of the area that your puppy has access to with pads. The floor you need to choose must be easy to clean for this method, like wooden or linoleum. So a kitchen is usually ideal. Then, when your puppy is reliably toileting in this smaller area, you just pop a couple of pads outside the back door. Finally, you will remove them altogether. You must remove the pads gradually for the same reason that you must start off by covering your entire kitchen floor. To reduce the risk of your puppy having an accident on your floor itself! To him, the floor might seem just as suitable as a puppy pad. So, covering the entire floor at first will remove the risk of any accidents on your floor. Removing the pads gradually will help your puppy learn that the pads are the right place, rather than causing any confusion when they suddenly disappear. But the downside is that it takes longer to get your puppy going to the toilet outside. And in the meantime, you have a house that is periodically peed and pooped in. Dogs have an incredible sense of smell, and the spot in the house they used once will lure them again and again to do their business unless you remove all evidence of the act. On the other hand, praise your pup for pottying in the location you designated. You can give small treats as rewards. Offer tons of praise and a treat, and after 30 days, wean your pup off the treats. The praise will mean much more to your dog. So which method is best? The one that works. The crate recreates the den your puppy grew up in, and no dog wants to soil its own house if it can be helped. As a benefit, the crate also provides a safe break from all the action in the rest of the house, and sometimes your puppy will choose to hang out in the crate. Baby gates work the same way a crate works. However you must teach your puppy all of your expectations, gently and firmly from day one. Decide the rules you want for your puppy, and teach them those rules right from the beginning, such as: not getting on furniture, not jumping up on people. If you allow that in the beginning, it will be very difficult to break the habit. Getting Prepared for A New Puppy! Puppy Chewing The more things you have for your puppy to chew, the less likely they are to chew up your things. The need to chew will go on for at least 18 months, although they may always love having things to chew and toys. You will also need a premium puppy food of your choice. We use an All Life Stages dog food made primarily of chicken and rice. Dogs originally were den animals, they burrowed holes underground, where they were safe from predators and nice and warm. They instinctively do not go to the bathroom in their dens. A crate is a safe haven for your puppy. Never take your puppy out of the crate until they are quiet, just sit patiently, without speaking, until they are quiet for a few seconds, and you will teach them to be quiet in the cage. Every time you take your puppy out of the crate, take them immediately outside to the place you want them to go to the bathroom. Puppies find places to go to the bathroom with their feet. When I take them out to the yard, to grass, rocks or dirt, which ever you prefer , they get used to that feeling on their feet and it becomes part of their potty que or trigger. If you allow your puppy to have accidents on your rugs or hardwood floors even by accident then that can quickly become their potty texture preference. Same goes for potty pads. Using potty pads only teaches your puppy that going potty on absorbent material is Ok. Not a great idea. Try to avoid accidents at all costs. This way, you will teach your dog to go to the bathroom on command. This can be very convenient if you are traveling or leaving the house. Stay away from the puppy until they are done with their business, keep other animals, children and any other distraction away from them. As soon as your puppy is done, immediately give them a dog treat and praise, and praise and praise. Then, stand back and see if there is more forthcoming and repeat the process. Your Puppy At Night. .If your puppy cries in the middle of the night, get up, sit by the cage until they are quiet for a minute or two, then and only then, take them outside to their spot, give the potty command to go, and stand quietly ignoring them until they are done, do not instigate play or talk in an excited voice. Never hit or yell harshly at your puppy, or they will be afraid of you, and will develop fear of you, rather than trust. It may take months before your dog is completely housetrained, be patient, it is all worth it! When you feed your puppy, stroke their back and head, and tell them how good they are. You want them to be used to having someone touch them when they eat. When you sit down to eat, ignore the puppy, or put them in the crate. When you have to leave make sure to crate your puppy or put them in a x-pen setup, when you get home, even after a short absence, calmly take your puppy outside, talk gently to them, let them go to the bathroom, take them back inside and talk to them calmly, pet them slowly and try to be as calm as you can. If you come back and get them excited, they will try to recreate that excited feeling when you are gone, because that means you will be home soon. Puppies are like any baby, they need lots of attention, a dog that does not get attention, will get anxious and nervous and may chew and chew furniture, rugs, shoes, cords, anything to get rid of the anxiety. Read my post on crate and x-pen setups for potty training puppies! Taking your Puppy to Class Take your puppy to obedience school. An untrained puppy can be a nuisance instead of a pleasure. Another important benefit, perhaps the most important, is puppies will meet many new people and dogs in puppy class, which will greatly help socialize them, and make them more people and dog friendly. When I take them out to the yard, to grass, rocks or dirt, which ever you prefer , they get used to that feeling on their feet. When they get to your home, your puppy will be used to the surface that you want them to use. This teaches them that talking to you actually works. Going Potty Outside Step by Step — Take your puppy outside on leash, take them to their designated spot, put them down, and give the potty command, stand back without touching them, and wait a bit for them to go to the bathroom. When you know your puppy is done going to the bathroom, praise them, give them a treat or a snuggle and then take them immediately back into the house, unless you are going to play with them outside. Our clients always tell us, they get compliments everywhere they go. This combination made for an amazingly calm and mellow pet. We breed for health, temperament, and looks. Carefully choosing our pairings to ensure all 3 qualities. Also, specializing in the lightest color of English, Yellow Labrador. We are a very small hobby breeder, only 1 or 2 litters per year. We have no outside or inside kennels for our Labradors. Our Labs have a very large corral when they want to go outside to run and play safely, and a lake for additional exercise and fun. Though they spend most of their time on the furniture, lounging! The whelping box is literally in the middle of our living room, and someone is there to watch them every minute. From the whelping box, they move to a large playpen after a couple of weeks to give mom and pups more room until they are old enough to ween, walk, and play. They are weighed daily and closely watched to be sure every little one is eating well and growing every day. Their temperature is taken daily and monitored to be sure they are properly digesting their milk. When the puppies are 3 to 4 weeks old, they are moved to the kitchen where they get full exposure to the sounds and smells of family life and have room to play. During this time, we teach them to go outside after meals and when they wake from slumber. Our Labrador puppies are almost fully potty trained when they are 8 weeks old and ready to go to their forever homes. Our Labradors, every single one of them, are members of our family. They are loved and spoiled until the day they go to Heaven. We do not breed before doing OFA health testing after 2 years of age and stop when our reproductive Vet recommends that we do so. Newfypoos are sweet, calm, hypo-allergenic, and get along well with other dogs, children, and other pets. When you have a Newdle in your house, happiness and love reign. Even better, no-shed and no-drool is the rule. If you love Newfoundlands, the drool is something you live with. Their laid-back personality and easy going nature is what you value. Grooming and Maintenance Newfypoos are low to no shed dogs. Lucky Day Ranch Newypoos are typically no shed. They have a fine, wavy coat that needs regular attention and trimming. In particular, the hair around their eyes can get in the way and needs to be trimmed often, as well as their prominent beard that needs regular cleaning. Training and Exercise These happy, intelligent dogs need daily walks, or at least regular times where they can feel challenged and active. Loyal, protective, intelligent, calm, and gentle are all words used to describe this amazing breed. Size Newfypoos are large, beautiful dogs. An adult Newfypoo can stand 24 to 32 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh between 70 to pounds. Ultimately, the size will depend on the size of each parent and is unpredictable. Coat The Newfypoo typically has a thick, curly, oily, and water-resistant coat. Most common colors are black, brown, and golden with the occasions multicolor coming through with some breedings. Time Requirements Highly inteligent and fairly active, Newfypoos are not the easiest of breeds to raise. They need at least an hour of activity a day and can experience separation anxiety if left alone for long stretches of time. Having an owner with time to spend with their pup is ideal for this breed. Health Concerns As with any mixed-breed dog, you can expect fewer genetic problems than with either parent breeds. With that said, however, you should also anticipate a tendency towards any disease common in those same breeds. Life Span Did You Know? The Newfypoo is a designer dog breed that originated in the United States and is a cross between a Newfoundland and a Poodle. As with many crosses with Poodles, the goal is the get all of the great traits of both breeds plus a low-shedding coat. This is not always guaranteed with a cross-breed because the puppies can take on any combination of traits from one or both parents. Regardless of their coat, a Newfypoo tends to have a friendly and loving disposition that makes a great family pet. Although the Newfypoo is not recognized by the American Kennel Club, they are recognized by other notable dog organizations like the International Designer Canine Registry, International Canine Association, and more. Although the Newfypoo grows up to be a big dog, they are notoriously gentle giants. They have a kind, loving, and friendly disposition with a playful, energetic personality. They are loyal and affectionate. Newfypoos also tend to be even-tempered and patient. They get along well with just about everyone including children, other dogs, and other pets. They also often take on the role of family protector and make good watchdogs. The Newfypoo is a moderately adaptable dog breed. Because of their large size, they do not tend to be a good fit for apartment living. They are better suited to larger homes and will love running around a yard. Because these big dogs tend to be fluffy, they tend to do better in moderate and cooler climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time because they bond closely with their families. Since the Newfypoo is a mixed-breed, they can inherit the potential health issues common to one, both, or neither of their parent breeds. For this designer dog breed, potential health issues to be aware of include patellar luxation, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, thyroid problems, bone problems, a heart condition called subvalvular aortic stenosis, and eye conditions like progressive retinal atrophy and cherry eye. Responsible breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing potential issues on to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Both of the parent breeds of the Newfypoo are highly intelligent, eager to please, and highly trainable. The same should be true for the Newfypoo. They tend to pick up on things quickly and tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels. They respond best to positive training methods focused on reward and praise. Because a mixed-breed can take on any combination of characteristics from the parents, your Newfypoo could end up with a Newfoundland coat, a Poodle coat, or some combination of both of them. As such, you need to be prepared for coat care regardless of coat type. Should your Newfypoo have a Newfoundland coat, they will shed moderately year-round with heavier shedding sessions twice a year. Brushing weekly or a few times a week is usually sufficient, but it may be a good idea to move to daily brushing during heavier shedding sessions. Bathing is on an as-needed basis. Should your Newfypoo inherit the Poodle coat, they will be low-shedding, but not low-maintenance. Professional grooming needs to happen every weeks. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning them as needed can help prevent ear infections. Keeping it a positive experience and getting them used to it early on makes basic grooming and maintenance much easier as your puppy grows into a large dog. The Newfypoo has a moderate activity level. They do need daily vigorous activity to stay happy and healthy, but they take time to relax as well. Daily walks plus some playtime and extra activity are usually sufficient for this dog. Their large frame and joints do not make them a good fit for long-distance running, but your Newfypoo may enjoy running around with you briefly, going on hikes, taking trips to the dog park, and more. A fully-grown Newfypoo usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. A Newfypoo generally lives years. Boxers are known for their puppy-at-heart attitude that shines through their young adult years. Some of these Boxers are cattle dogs or police dogs, while others are guide dogs for the blind. Are White Boxers aggressive? All dogs have the tendency to be aggressive when they are not trained properly. Boxers got the bad reputation of being a vicious breed because they were originally bred for hunting and dog fights. But, as times changed, these dogs evolved as well. A White Boxer shares the same features as regular Boxers, only their coat is white. Considered a medium to large dog, as mentioned above a White Boxer can weigh 50 to 80 lbs 22 to 36kg and reach up to 21 to 25 inches 53 to 66 cm in height. Distinctly shaped heads and strong bodies A distinct physical feature of a Boxer is its head. Their jaws have an underbite and their muzzle is blunt. Their ears are erect and sometimes naturally fold over. Some White Boxers will also have cropped ears. Most White Boxers have a muscular body with a broad, deep chest. Their tails are carried high and often docked. How rare are White Boxer puppies? The quick answer is: not that rare. Contrary to popular belief, having a White Boxer does not involve elaborate breeding techniques. Twenty to twenty-five percent of Boxers will be born white, so these dogs are not really a rare occurrence. Are White Boxers healthy? As mentioned in the first paragraph the average lifespan of a White Boxer is 10 to 12 years. This is due to the lack of pigment in the skin cells of their inner ear canal and consequently the loss of sensory hair cells. Skin problems — Skin issues are common in White Boxers because of their short coats. Many of these dogs suffer from skin rashes and irritation. Blindness — The link between blindness and the White Boxer needs to be studied further, but there are more blind White Boxers than any other Boxers of different coat colors. White Boxers are also said to be more prone to canine cancers than other breeds. How do you care for your White Boxer? Caring for a White Boxer is easy, especially since this is a low-shedding breed. However, you will have to devote some regular playtime for this active dog. Their short coats shed only a small amount of fur and require only a weekly brushing. White Boxers are highly intelligent and can be easily trained to do what needs to be done. However, there are some Boxer behaviors that need to be addressed during training. Training sessions should be fun and short to keep White Boxers interested. They need to see you as the pack leader for them to follow your command. Socialization is important for White Boxers as they can get protective of their toys and their humans. Positive reinforcement yields better results with this breed. Praises and treats go a long way in making good behavior stick. Due to the number of White Boxers that are deaf, owners have found other ways to train their beloved canine. What makes the White Boxer controversial? White Boxers were originally part of the police force, but their coats made them easy to spot at night. This nighttime visibility rendered the pups useless in police operations. This ban aimed to take out the genes that make these Boxers white and led to breeders killing their White Boxer puppies and dogs. But that was just the start as the debate about this breed still goes on today. The American Kennel Club controversy According to the AKC breed standard, a Boxer should have two-thirds of its coat is colored either fawn or brindle. Because White Boxers do not meet this criterion, some breeders think that White Boxers are inferior and have more health issues compared to fawn or brindle Boxers. This thinking has caused some breeders to euthanize White Boxer puppies. White Boxer welfare groups There are several White Boxer welfare groups that advocate for these dogs and condemn White Boxer euthanasia. The basic fact that Boxer Rescue has to exist is evidence enough that too many people get a puppy because he is adorable, cute and playful. People seem to forget that a cute Boxer puppy turns a big, handsome, full grown adult dog that requires a lot of your time and attention. A Boxer in his adolescence is NOT easy to handle for the novice or unprepared person. Boxers are a very friendly and affectionate breed! They crawl in your lap, jump up on you and love to give those sloppy wet Boxer kisses. Boxers require daily exercise! Taking a quick walk down the street is not sufficient. Of course, an older adult Boxer needs less exercise than one under 4 years, but even the silver deserves to be kept happy and fit by engaging in some amount of exercise each day with his human. Many Boxers end up in rescues or shelters because their families did little research and were not aware of the incredible amount of energy they have. A tired Boxer is a well behaved Boxer! The Boxer breed is especially susceptible to seasonal flank alopecia. Providing a quality food, vitamin supplements with Omega Fatty Acids, Flax Seed or Salmon Oil in addition to regular brushing, usually keeps shedding to a minimum. Boxers are not considered high maintenance when it comes to grooming, but remember to clip those nails regularly! Most can recognize the need to be more patient and gentle with these fragile beings; however, some are better at executing it than others! Boxers have the tendency to bowl over young children when they get excited or while playing. If you would find this unacceptable, do not get a Boxer dog!!!! Boxers with People While Boxers in general, tend to be protective towards their family members, some are better at it than others! A Boxer should never be acquired for the sole purpose of guarding. This is not a dog to be left alone unattended for hours on end. They MUST live indoors with their families. It is common to find a Boxer who suffers from separation anxiety. They need to be around people and they thrive on this special companionship. Boxers can develop unwelcome behaviors such as digging, barking and chewing if ignored or not cared for properly. They have the potential to do a great deal of damage they are powerful chewers if they are not in a suitable environment. The Boxer generally makes a fine Therapy Dog. If you want to run around and play, so will they. Boxer Health Boxer guardians should have a bit of money tucked away for unplanned vet visits besides the annual check-up for vaccines and heartworm test. Dog food of poor quality can exacerbate or bring about a skin condition and other health problems. Boxers are powerful and strong dogs. They require committed and capable handlers and caregivers. Boxers do not respond well to repetition. Instead, they excel when given a few short training sessions. Repeating a command when the Boxer has already done it correctly can be counterproductive. The Boxer is intelligent! HE knows he did it right—YOU know he did it right. Move on. Many Boxers excel at agility! If you desire a dog who will do what you say when you say it, every time you say it, do not acquire a Boxer. A Boxer lives to please his human. It is imperative that you use positive reinforcement techniques when training a Boxer. Physical, harsh, or violent reprimanding is never recommended, nor is it acceptable for any animal. Chewing Most Boxers love to chew. Coffee tables, remote controls, shoes, chair legs, door frames etc… are all fair game. It is imperative that you provide your Boxer with stimulating toys or activities to do when you cannot be around. It is your duty to provide a chewing outlet for your Boxer. A busy dog is a happy dog. We suggest a KONG filled with treats or another delectable concoction, a food cube, treat ball, or nylabone type product. Eating Habits Some Boxers are messy eaters. You may find more kibble on the floor around their bowls, stuck to the wall, or caught in their jowls, than what actually made it into their tummies. Many Boxers send spit, slobber and chunks of food flying across the room after they shake their heads and many consider the couch cushions their personal napkins. Boxers who are socialized on a regular basis, from puppyhood, generally relate very well with other dogs. Many Boxer breeders and rescuers will agree that placement of Boxers of the opposite sex male with female, spayed and neutered of course!
