How clever and super cute is it when you see a dog play dead? Whilst not essential like toilet training or recal l, teaching your puppy tricks is a great way to bond. The play dead trick is pretty much what it says on the tin: a party trick where the dog has to pretend to die! Proper Oscar winning stuff! This is going to show you how to teach an adult dog to play dead, but if you have a puppy this can also be used to teach a puppy to play dead too. What are you waiting for? Firstly though just a reminder… all of the training that we do at Zigzag is with positive reinforcement and uses rewards. It really is how dogs learn best. A Vet bed, a yoga mat or rug can work well for this. Soft tasty treats — tiny pieces of cheese, hot dog or cold unsalted meat work well. You can also try DIY home made treats or high-value commercial treats. Whatever your dog really likes and finds rewarding really! Clicker training gives the dog instant feedback that they did the right thing, this makes training tricks much easier. Clever dog! Repeat this a couple of times so your dog is following the lure down nice and smoothly. Keeping your dog in the down position move the treat from their nose round the side of their body so that they roll onto one of their hips to follow the treat. Once they do mark this and give them the treat. Repeat this a couple of times until that weight shift becomes nice and steady. It will take practice and patience but stick with it. Step 4 — Practise over a few days Dogs learn through repetition. Say your marker and release the treat. What a pup-genius! Make the same movement with your hand coming down to the floor, then get them to roll and lie on their side. Use your marker word and reward. Repeat this several times, so that your dog truly understands that this hand signal means I want you to lie down and roll on your side, head on the floor i. Work with this, not against! Use treats your dog really likes to teach this trick. Dogs learn best without stress and in low-distraction environments, generally without other dogs around. If sure your dog knows the " lie down " command, then playing dead should be easy. All you need is a handful of tasty treats, and you are ready to start training your dog to play dead. This is a great trick to teach by clicker training route, be sure to have your clicker handy. If your dog doesn't lie down on command yet, go back and master that before you begin training it to play dead. Offer a Treat: Hold a treat close to your dog's nose, and slowly pull it over to its side so it will have to roll onto its side to get it. If your dog already knows this trick, then it's ahead of the game. Reward Listening: As soon as your dog is lying on its side, say "yes" or "good. Then, give the dog a treat. Repeat these steps several times. Add a Signal: After your dog completes the roll a few times, add a cue word and a hand signal. Most people choose to use the verbal command "bang" along with a hand signal command , holding their fingers to look like a gun pointing at the dog. Others ask a funny question like, "Would you rather be a cat, or be dead? Eventually, you will stop placing the treat on the floor and reward the dog after it "revives" instead. Instead of giving the dog a treat as soon as it lies on its side, wait a few seconds, and then give the treat. Practice this a few times, adding a few more seconds each time. Some dogs will lie still and play dead for several minutes! Problems and Proofing Behavior If your dog already knows how to roll over, its natural inclination might be to go all the way over when you start to lure it to its side. This is a great time to get your clicker out to capture the exact behavior you want. Lure your dog onto its side with a treat, click your clicker immediately and give the dog a treat. If it tries to keep rolling over, step away for a minute. When your dog realizes that the treat disappears when it rolls completely over, it will stop. If you are having trouble getting your dog to follow the treat so that it ends up lying on its side, you can help by physically moving the dog. Gently push the dog over onto its side. As soon as the dog is in the correct position, click your clicker or tell him "yes" or "good" and offer a treat. If at any point in the training your dog makes more than two or three mistakes in a row, you may be moving ahead too quickly. Go back a step or two and practice. When the dog is repeatedly successful at the earlier step, begin the next step. Remember to be patient and consistent. Each dog is unique and learns at a different pace. Keep training sessions upbeat and stop training if your dog seems frustrated, tired, or bored. Always try to end sessions on a positive and successful note, even if that means switching to a simpler action like " sit " or "down" as the last thing you do. We'll dive into more details on each of these: 1 Illness or injury. As with any sort of strange behavior, health issues are always a top concern. Not feeling well almost always manifests as changes in mood. Any physical issues such as limping, favoring a certain part of the body, or inability to walk or run as usual point to some sort of injury or condition. What to do: When in doubt about any possible health issue, contact the vet. Eating changes or gastrointestinal issues are just a few reasons to contact the veterinarian and schedule a checkup. If you have a female Pug that has not been spayed and is therefore entering in and out of heat cycles , this can cause her to feel moody. Heat typically occurs twice per year. It can last 2 to 3 weeks. In addition, it is believed that some dogs feel abdominal cramping, which can lend to the bad mood. What to do: You can help by allowing your Pug to retreat if she wishes, being sure that she has a great bed to rest on, and if she appears to be in discomfort placing a warm heating pad next to her abdomen can help be sure that this is set on warm, not hot, and that your Pug cannot chew on any cords. He is doing really well with potty training, and has yet to have an accident in his crate, but soon after he enters his crate the howling begins. This way he associates it with a positive place. We kept each of our puppies on a leash in the house, never out of our sight except when they were in the crate for 4 months before we gradually gave them independence. We always messed with them and held them. They had accidents as you would expect until fully house trained at about 4 months, but never any destructive or aggressive behavior. We gave them plenty of tough chew toys. Also training classes. They were never nervous or skittish. They love to lay on us and never have had any trouble with grooming, food guarding, loud noises, children or other animals. Day 2 no problem at all. Now just the occasional cry when I leave her but that is over with in a very short space of time. I also leave a low radio on for her. She uses the garden most of the time for toileting, but occasionally she will come into the house and do another wee. The problem I have at the moment is trying to stop her biting. I have tried the gentle command which she listens to some of the time. And I have tried standing and turning my back on her so she realises I am not playing when she bites, but she will then go for trousers or feet, which I try my best to ignore, or she will just go off and do something else like chew a mat or something which is a no no.
