They each have their own look and personality too. However, most Goldendoodle puppies at this age do have this in common—they look like cuddly teddy bears. At this age, Goldendoodle puppies still have adorable puppy bellies and teddy bear-like body proportions. They have baby faces with floppy ears and bright, inquisitive button-eyes—like teddy bears. Teddy bear? Here are four things you might not know about the physical characteristics of week-old Goldendoodles: 1. We can thank the Goldendoodle parent breeds—the Poodle and the Golden Retriever. According to the AKC, Poodles coat colors include apricot, brown, red, white, gray, cream, silver, and black. The color variation follows the pattern of the Golden Retriever coat—a lighter belly and darker along the topline back. Parenting a week-old Goldendoodle—helpful tips from a mom At 10 weeks old, I can say that the amount of care and attention a Goldendoodle puppy needs is much like that of caring for a new baby. Your Goldendoodle relies on you for pretty much everything—potty breaks, meals, safety, and heaps of love, comfort, and attention. What to expect at 10 weeks Oh my Goldendoodle! Even at 10 weeks old, Goldendoodle puppies are smart and curious! I think they are like little sponges soaking up every thing in their world! They will explore every nook and cranny—not only with their nose but also by putting things in their mouth too. Like all puppies, they need about 18 hours of sleep a day. At this stage, our family was focused on the bottom of the hierarchy of needs—establishing the basics of potty time, bedtime, and mealtime. And of course, most importantly, we just wanted to love and cuddle and bond with her! And give her lots of positive, positive, positive praise. Here are some things we did to help our puppy adjust to her new home. Maybe these tips will inspire you too. Setting up a puppy safe place in your home Setting up a small, puppy-proofed space in our home was a game changer for us. When we brought our puppy home at 10 weeks old, we thought we had the perfect puppy space all set up. We loved using the Pawland extra wide dog gate across hallways and entries to confine her space and keep her safe. However, we quickly learned that at 10 weeks of age, our puppy needed an even smaller play area. A small play area and chew toys were just right for our Goldendoodle at 10 weeks of age This made it much easier to keep a watchful eye on our pupper and supervise her at all times. For example, we could easily observe when our puppy started to wander away from us, lose interest in toys, or started sniffing the floor. These were all her signs that she needed to go potty! Expect accidents. At our first puppy veterinary visit, our vet explained to us that as a rule of thumb, puppies will need to potty after naps, after meals, at night, after playing, and times in between. Next, here are a few potty training ideas that worked for our puppy. Observe your puppy and watch for potty cues and behaviors. For our Goldendoodle puppy, we noticed that she would wander away from us and start sniffing near the puppy gate when she had to go potty. Also, during the day, we established a routine of taking her to potty after every nap, meal, play time, and then every two hours in between those times. Choose a designated area outdoors for puppy potty training. Also, we always took her out on a leash so that we could ask her to go potty i. More than likely, your puppy is used to sleeping next to puppy siblings, listening to puppy sounds, and feeling the warmth of mom and puppy brothers and sisters. We decided that our new furry family member would be safest in a crate for bedtime. We placed the crate next to the bed so that our puppy could feel close to us—her new pack. Plus, we could comfort her with the sound of our voice or a gentle touch if she needed reassurance. Next, here are some things we tried and that worked for us when helping our Goldendoodle puppy adjust to her new bedtime routine. Crate time when sleepy When we noticed our puppy getting sleepy, we waited until she was comfy and her eyes were closing, and then put her in her kennel. A crate can be a cozy space If she awakened, we reassured her by sitting close to the crate and putting our fingers in the crate. This was enough to make her feel close to her pack again and settle. However, if she continued to stir, at this age we assumed that she had to go potty, and would take her out. Night time potty outings Expect your puppy to have to go potty in the night. Since the puppy hair is so easy to manage at this stage, just getting into the habit and building a positive association around brushing and grooming was job number one. We focused on making sure we were having fun together, and she was happy and comfortable. We let our puppy approach the comb on her own terms not the other way around , and we let her sniff it. And we rewarded her with lots of positive praise. We decided evenings would be the best time for grooming. This was a time when our puppy was sleepy and relaxed. While she was comfortable on the couch, we gently combed the hair. At this age, it literally took just a few minutes. As an aside, for our adult Goldendoodle, we tried a lot of brushes before finally finding the best brush for Goldendoodle grooming. But at 10 weeks, we chose a dog comb as our grooming tool of choice. And let me just say, those Goldendoodle toe beans paw pads are so cute! Then over time, we started placing our favorite dog nail clippers out on the coffee table while combing her hair or massaging her paws. This way, she could become familiar with the dog nail clippers too. Eventually, we gently held her paws and lightly touched the nail clippers to her nails so she could get the idea of nail clipping without us actually clipping the nails. Throughout our mock nail trims, she got lots of praise and sweet talk. At first, we hand fed her rather than using a dog food bowl so that we could use mealtime to bond with her. Also, Sadie had a voracious appetite. Speaking from experience, both of our Doodle dogs have eaten too fast and sometimes the food comes back up. Expect your puppy to react with fear in different situations, which is a very normal part of puppy development. Offer them a variety of new experiences and reward your puppy for exploring them. By 12 weeks of age or so, they will begin teething. By the end of this month, he should have better control of his bladder and bowels. He may begin to sleep through the night without accidents or potty breaks — yay! Your Dood will need more and more food as he grows. Be sure to feed him times a day right now to support his rapid brain and body development. Ann Johnson published a well researched textbook on golden pups; and, also from Golden Glen Kennels that were well know for their dark goldens for their obedience and hunting. These are all our dogs - our pets first and foremost! We have been fortunate in gaining many referrals from past adoptees, as well as some of those getting 2nd, even 3rd, pups for themselves! We greatly appreciate our adoptees - past, present, and future. Our children participate in the breeding a little more each year! We have been doing this for 19 years since .Our adoptees say that our pups are better than they've found from most breeders when they come to pick out their pups. Of just over pups in 19 years, there has been great health history with no cancer. Any health issues have been mostly environmentally caused or some pretty common parasites that we work diligently to ward off for you and the pups. These are our babies, newborns, just like our kids that come home from the hospital. The pups are raised in our home, and socialized with tender loving care, on wooded and meadowed acreage with a pond. She was never bred, but our Golden Retriever adoption service is in honor of her, now residing at the "green tennis ball retirement lodge". This is the first pup, from our first litter! The Goldens we Breed: We have three spectrums of Golden pups and parents, primarily based on their coloring - See our "parents" page for complete information 1 English Cream bred with another English Cream. These come primarily from "Gold-Rush Kennels" lineage who have a long history of top dogs. These are the darker to dark red goldens that we started breeding with and come from great lineage both from "Liberty Kennels" back east from which came President Fords dog; and, "Golden Glen Kennels" with a long history of hunting and obedience backgrounds. This is a combination of the two above and produces some great pups in a range of medium light English Cream Golden to a medium to light medium dark "mocha" coloring. We have chosen not to breed the "average" golden that tends to be the light medium to medium in coloring with a fairly long coat. This is what the AKC considers the "standard of the breed". You will see these around, but mostly you will see them at a dog show; and, are the only range of Goldens you'll see shown. These average goldens have been way over bred, including a fair amount of "inbreeding", and they tend to have the most health problems due to this. There are some very beautiful dogs in this category, but by far we feel you will find the most beautiful, distinctive dogs with predictable great temperaments and health within the English Creams and darker Goldens. Our personal favorites are the very dark goldens, though hard to find. They specialized in the very dark goldens for hunting and obedience trials. Unfortunately these two ends of the spectrum do have their own caveats. The English Creams are fast becoming over bred with claims of grandiose backgrounds, rampant breeding of so-called "English Creams" "specially imported" from some country by a breeder, and they don't look much like a golden, and come with arbitrary high prices. With the darker Goldens, especially the darker red's, they are in a sense being hi-jacked by seemingly elite hunting breeders, generally requiring you to only use the dog for hunting activities a "working dog" ; and, subsequently, the "Golden community" is starting to lose these dogs that make fantastic intelligent companions and they also make great "help" dogs for people. Several of our darker Goldens have gone this route, as well as for hunting. This is not to say that the English Creams aren't good for this, as well! Most of our dogs, and the pups produced, have what we call a "long flat silky coat" that tends to be easier to care for than the very thick haired show golden and with generally less shedding. The English Cream Goldens tend to be somewhat fluffier and shed a bit more, while the darker goldens tend to maintain the flatter silky coat with less shedding. All our adults have good health backgrounds with their parents or grandparents, and farther back, having lots of OFA and CERF certifications for eyes, hearts, elbows, hips; though we go more by our health history because "certifications" tend to imply to many a level of "perfection" and unfortunately these are living beings, essentially just like us humans - see our health page for more health info. The darker Goldens tend to have a penchant toward hunting senses and abilities, though pups from all parents have been used for hunting. Some people favor the lighter, english cream goldens for their somewhat more mellow temperament, and somewhat lower energy level. However, be careful of seeking "mellow".This is especially true with a golden. We've never met or heard of a true golden retriever that doesn't have an inherent mellow temperament and that wants to bond with THEIR human. All our adults and pups, light to dark, have primarily the boxy heads with shorter snouts, though some have a somewhat longer snout. They all have wonderful traits of mellow dispositions, eager to please, and are "easily" obedience trained. We do provide the "one word" commands on our website, so you can start right away, but it does take comittment. The pups are socialized and surrounded by their siblings and mother and other dogs and all of our family 3 children, carefully monitored as well as visitors. Pups generally are released to their new homes around 8 weeks old. We do not recommend getting them much later, as the sooner they are with you, the sooner, and better, they will bond with you, instead of us or their siblings or parents. The ideal bonding time is from weeks old and gradually decreases at around 12 weeks of age; however, you will not find a golden that won't bond with a human at any age! Our pups have been placed in adoptive homes ranging as pets and companions to elderly care companions to pheasant hunting dogs to mascots on fishing boats to very happy apartment dwellers to families with 4 to 5 children. As a breeder under the USDA "Animal Welfare Act" we are classified as an "Exempt Business" - Anyone who sells domestic pets directly to pet owners is exempt, regardless of sales volume, when picked up face to face or may be sight-unseen when the breeder has 4 or fewer breeding females. Health is 1. Solid Temperaments The second important distinction about Summer Brook is that all of our breeding dogs have proof of solid temperaments. All of them have at a minimum a CGC title. Where We and Our Goldens Live Our Home Our family lives on a private road in a community filled with gated areas, beautiful ponds and lakes, pastures, and woods. All of our neighbors have acres of land. Our English Golden Retrievers live and sleep in our home. We have 5 doggy doors going out of our home into five different fenced areas. Our front door gives access to a sixth. Someone is home with them nearly all the time. We are fortunate enough to have a home large enough for the dogs to have plenty of room. Our house has an open floor plan that enables us to see all of our dogs from one place. At the same time, we are still able to separate them individually or in groups when necessary. How We Care for Our Dogs Unless it is rainy, our dogs have free access in and out of our home through doggy doors. We brush each dog regularly and bathe them about once a month. Because they have access to large outdoor areas, we rinse them off often. We do daily competitive obedience training with most of them and they all do short training sessions at meal times. The dogs rotate between the various areas in our home so that they all have quality time with us. We use primarily natural methods to prevent fleas and tics, and we feed our dogs high quality food. Litters whelped and raised in our home How and Why We Initially Started Breeding When we first started this venture, we were a home-schooling family with 3 children from years of age. Our home life was and still is very compatible with caring for dogs. My younger daughter, Elise, was also wanting a career with dogs. At 12, Elise was unsure what career with dogs she wanted, but both girls had a big passion for animals. We began breeding initially purely for the love of our daughters. We had no paid employees and Darrell husband and Daniel son helped minimally. But as time went on, Darrell and Daniel become involved and we added several paid employees. Darrell now handles most of the communications. Daniel has graduated from college and is working in Georgia as a civil engineer. We spent many weekends going to obedience trials and conformation shows. Jenna, Elise, and I spent a good percentage of our free time researching pedigrees and breeders in Europe. We loved it! The dogs were our hobby. Adding Employees However, in time our daughters moved on to other interests. They graduated from high school and went to college. Both girls moved from home. It was time for a change for both the girls as well as for Summer Brook. After home schooling for 17 years, I was excited about the prospect of throwing myself into working with the dogs myself. Without the responsibilities of homeschooling, I found myself with more time to invest in my hobby. By this time, my hobby had turned into more than a full time job. She worked with us for about a year and then went on to become a vet tech. The Early Days of Summer Brook Acres Before getting our first dogs, we spent hundreds maybe thousands of hours researching. We started off deciding on the breed. From there, we moved to researching breeders and individual dogs and pedigrees. We retired more than half of what we originally imported without ever breeding them. Breeders send their best dogs to those they have a relationship with. Most of these best breeders are leery of sending dogs to the U. Our experience is not unusual for good breeders. There are a lot of hoops to jump through in order to have really good breeding dogs. It is not as simple as calling or emailing a European breeder and asking for the best dog. The best breeders in Europe are very particular about where their dogs go. It takes time to develop relationships overseas. And it takes patience to build good lines with good looks, health, and temperaments. In addition to our English Golden Retrievers, over the past almost 20 years, our family has had one American Golden and 4 smaller dogs. These 5 dogs were family pets and never bred. Our family has had six horses, three birds, a rabbit, and three cats. Not all of them were at the same time! We loved them all. However, none of them quite captured all of our hearts like the Golden Retrievers. Though all our dogs are a light cream, we do not breed for color. We feel that the head is important but, it is not the entire package. There is so much more in producing a nice litter of puppies. We will only breed the best dogs that meet our very high standards. We have intensely studied the pedigrees of hundreds of dogs looking for those with generations of proven good conformation, good health, and a typical sweet Golden Retriever temperament. Most of our dogs have parents with not only titles earned because of their beauty, but titles proving their worth as working dogs also. While our dogs are beautiful, we believe that a good pet, first and foremost, needs to have a good temperament and be healthy. Our goal is to produce puppies that are physically, intellectually, and temperamentally as close to the FCI breed standard as possible, and then to do all we can to nurture and care for our puppies in such a way that they will have the best possible start in life to develop to their fullest potential. Several have come to us from other west coast states including Oregon and Washington. Dozens have come to Summer Brook from Texas as well. Some Flying. Others driving. There are quite a few in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland. One family drove miles from Nebraska, a second from Massachusetts, and a third drove from northern Maine which is about miles. Over a dozen have driven from Texas and states such as Oklahoma and Arkansas. We have puppies all over the south. We get tremendous satisfaction from matching puppies to families. We will only send our puppies home with families who have time to raise a puppy. Our puppies go to families who want more than just a dog. They want a companion. We are looking for just the right families for our puppies. At the same time, we are busy raising puppies to be suitable companions for families.
