Brush right to the skin with a stiff brush or rake. If the dog mats at this point she will have to clipped short by your groomer. Hair Coat The hair coat feels very similar to the hair on your head. It is unlike the feel of wool or fleece. The hair coat will shed. It requires little attention. Puppies will often look like they are going to have a fleece coat until the hair comes through the puppy coat at about eight or nine weeks of age. The doodle with a hair coat has the same wonderful temperament and personality as the doodle with the non shedding coat but is not good for a person with allergies or for a family that has chosen the doodle because of his non-shedding qualities. It is hard to get a brush through the curls if you leave it too long. Without this regular brushing right down to the skin mats will form next to the skin. Mats make it very uncomfortable for the dog to walk and run and play. We keep our wool coated dogs clipped short because we live with fields of weeds and burrs. It is quite possible to keep a wool coated dog with a long coat, it simply is a matter of keeping up with the brushing and keeping feet, faces and bums clipped. This would be a trip to the groomer at least every second month. Every six weeks keeps dogs in both long and short coats looking and feeling like movie stars. Grooming For Every Doodle No matter what the doodle coat there is grooming required. This can either be done by an interested family member or your groomer. Ears Fur grows out of the ears of a labradoodle. It begins its journey deep in the ear canal. If ears are not keep clean and dry dirt and wax can lead to severe ear infections. You can tell when the doggie has hot ears that there is a problem and a trip to the vet will be in order. Some doodles love to dig and have very thick fur in their ears. This means it could be a good idea to pluck the fur from deep in the ear. It is not difficult to take tweezers or better still a hemostat and pluck out the fur on a regular basis. I must say I almost swooned the first time I did it myself but it does get easier. Unless you are an expert it is a two person job, one to hold the dog and promise treats, the other to pluck. Your vet can recommend an ear drying powder which will keep the ears in good health. Of course, your groomer will do the ear plucking for you. If you take your dog every six weeks she should be fine. Nails Unless dogs travel on a stone river bed a couple of kilometers every single day they need their nails trimmed. Our Labradoodles have dew claws and they will always need attention. Nail trimming should be done every few weeks. It is however another wonderful thing your professional groomer will do. Our doodle girls have fuzzy feet and so have to be content with a simple nail trim. Little Bottoms All long coated dogs need a trim around their little bottoms for ease of toilette. A Labradoodle with a wool coat can still have longer or shorter fur depending on whether or not an owner chooses to let it grow out or to keep it clipped short. This coat type can also come in the same variety of colors as any other coat type. So, you can expect plenty of variation from one wool Labradoodle to the next! First generation mixes f1 Labradoodles are much harder to predict, as they can inherit any traits from their two very different parents! So, some f1 Labradoodles may have fur like their Labrador parent, some may be like their Poodle parent, and others will fall somewhere in the middle. Instead, many breeders will achieve this coat type in subsequent generations, or even in Labradoodles that have been backcrossed to a purebred Poodle. Labradoodle puppy coats can be very different to their adult coats. All Doodle puppies will have a soft, single-layered coat. Over time, this will shed out to reveal their adult coat. And this applies to all three Labradoodle coat types. Some will even do genetic testing to see if their puppies have the genes for a curly wool coat. More often than not, these breeders will work with later generation mixes, or with Doodles backcrossed to Poodles, for a higher chance of inheriting the Poodle coat. Do Wool Coat Labradoodles Shed? Like all dogs, wool coat Labradoodles will shed. Even purebred Poodles shed. Wool coat Labradoodles will shed in small amounts, and the majority of the hairs will be trapped in their curly coat. Compared to fleece and hair coat types, the wool coat Labradoodle will shed the least. Are Wool Coat Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? The Labradoodle has long been marketed as a hypoallergenic breed. However, the truth is that there is no hypoallergenic dog breed. All dogs have the proteins that can trigger allergy symptoms. These proteins can be found in canine dander, urine, saliva, and so on. Like it catches shedding hair, your Labradoodles wool coat will also catch any shedding dander. So, there is a lower chance of a wool coat Labradoodle setting off your allergies. Studies have shown a high level of variation to allergy-triggering proteins in dog saliva. So, one Labradoodle may not trigger you, whilst another with the same coat type might. On top of this, wool coats are very high-maintenance. So, you will need to spend a lot of time grooming them, and getting up close to the trapped dander. Of course, there are ways around this. Or, you could take them to a professional groomer much more frequently than other owners might need to. A good cleaning regime is also essential. But what grooming do they actually need? Well, a wool coat Labradoodle will need the same grooming as a purebred Poodle, since they have the same tight curls. Many owners will use a combination of a slicker brush and a bristle brush. Then, any loose fur can be removed with the bristle brush. Others may prefer to use a comb, especially when detangling any particularly troublesome knots. However, this can take a little longer than using a slicker brush. Particularly one designed for Poodle fur. Make sure your Labradoodle is familiar and comfortable with the grooming process from a young age. Labradoodles with a fleece coat have looser curls than wool coat Labradoodles. Fleece coat types are often described as having the same texture and softness as angora wool, which is very appealing to lots of owners! Of course, going to the groomers and clipping it shorter is still an option for the fleece coat. This coat type still requires some level of grooming, but it will be less than the wool coat. If you have plenty of time to dedicate to grooming your dog every single day, the wool coat Labradoodle will suit you. Just ensure you invest in the right tools. We do recommend that if you have the opportunity to meet one of these wonderful dogs in person that you should check to see if you have any reactions before you make your decision in purchasing your new puppy. The AKC breed standard allows for male Labs to be 22 to 25 inches tall at the withers, and 65 to 80 pounds. Females can be 21 to 24 inches tall, and 55 to 70 pounds. And of course, these parameters only apply to show dogs. Even greater variation occurs healthily and naturally in the pet population. So if you want a naturally micro Labrador, how can you go about finding one? But one of the most reliable predictors is the size of their parents. When two healthy dogs at the low end of the normal weight range for Labs mate, their puppies are likely to be small for Labs as well. You can ask breeders about their size of their sire and dam when you call to ask about a litter, or research which waiting list to join. But be prepared to discover that your puppy may exceed all expectations anyway! Labradors can come in a surprising range of healthy weights. Their legs appear to be bent because they are malformed. This bone malformation causes them to have problems with their knee and hip joints, which can be painful and crippling. Any type of dwarfism can cause additional health problems to the animal. Although some dwarf Labradors will live full and happy lives, they are at a greater risk than their unaffected cousins. It is therefore very important that Labrador breeders ensure that they do not breed from Labradors who carry the gene for dwarfism. Dwarf Labrador Health Tests Before you buy a Labrador, their breeder should have carried out a variety of health tests on both of the parents. One of the things you should make sure that they have tested for is dwarfism in Labradors. There is a test available for SD2, which will tell the breeder whether the parent carries the gene. No Lab with the gene should be bred to another with it, as they could result in the puppies having dwarfism.
