I am not the only one that thinks that labs are the best thing to have happened to us. However, not all Labradors are equally as popular, with the Mini Lab being one of the most controversial variations. The term Miniature Labrador is used to describe Labrador Retrievers that are smaller than the Standard Labrador breed. They are not recognized as a standard variation of Labrador Retrievers. Miniature Labradors can appear as a result of dwarfism or mixed breeding with small dog breeds. One of the reasons why Mini Labradors are so controversial is their health issues. We shall take a closer look at these and all other care needs you should know about if you are considering getting one. Strictly speaking, this is not accurate. There is no such thing as a standard smaller version of a Labrador. The miniature versions around are either Labradors with the dwarfism trait or mixed Labs. The dwarf versions are what most people refer to when they use the term Miniature Labrador. They are more or less like your average Labrador, with just a few differences in appearance. Here is what you can expect: Size Miniature Labradors vary in weight depending on their origin. Whereas, SD2 is another form of dysplasia that causes short legs in a dwarf lab with normal body length and width. This is the one that is difficult to identify. Other causes of dwarfism can include hypopituitarism which is an inherited deficiency of growth hormone. In this case, the dogs will not be able to produce enough growth hormone which causes a lesser growth rate in the Labrador puppies when compared with their littermates. Hypothyroidism can also cause dwarfism in Labradors in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. Out of the many causes of dwarfism in Labradors, the most common type of dwarfism is Skeletal dysplasia SD2. Dwarf Labrador symptoms- Identifying a dwarf Lab Here comes the question, how to identify a dwarf Labrador? As i have told you before, a dwarf Labrador can be unnoticeable as a dwarf with a casual observation as the symptoms can either be easily visible or sometimes hard to notice. But dwarf Labradors exhibit certain physical symptoms that are general in nature. Have a look at them… 1. Short Legs In a dwarf Labrador, you can observe that its legs are shorter in length when compared with the legs of a normal Labrador. This is one of the common symptoms visible in a dwarf Labrador. But do not confuse this symptom with the legs of a normal English Labrador, as they tend to have slightly shorter legs than the American Labradors. It is simply a supply-demand logic, if more people are comfortable with purchasing dwarf Labs, then breeders do not consider breeding Labradors with dwarf gene as a problem. A responsible breeder should conduct various health tests of the Labradors which are to be bred. For this, dwarf Labrador health tests can be done to check if a Labrador contains the dwarf gene. The test is available for checking the presence of the gene of skeletal dysplasia SD2. When people stop purchasing dwarf Labradors, the breeders ensure that the parent Labradors do not carry the dwarf gene while breeding them. Do you have a Dwarf labrador? Words Of Warning From Lab Breeders If you are researching Labrador breeders, here are some negative buzzwords to keep your eyes peeled for: Micro Labrador Mini Labrador Miniature Labs These words demonstrate that the breeder is either lacking knowledge about Labradors or is trying to mislead puppy buyers. Either way, they are not the breeder that you want to approach. Well, yes, you can. Some Labradors are smaller than others! Just make sure that you check out the health tests that are relevant to this breed as well before you commit to the puppy. But no healthy Labrador will stay small to the miniature extent. Lab puppies that stay really small do so because they are undernourished, ill or have a disease. Even dwarf Labradors are only around 2. If you want a small Labrador Retriever, then think about why. Is it to do with a lack of space, or simply a personal taste issue?
