With their signature bat ears and expressive eyes, French Bulldogs, or "Frenchies" as they are lovingly known, have captured the hearts of many dog lovers around the globe, consistently ranking among the most popular breeds. Renowned for their easy maintenance and the ability to thrive in apartment living, French Bulldogs are a city dweller's delight. Their small size, typically weighing under 28 pounds, makes them perfectly suited to compact urban spaces. However, their charming personalities and heartwarming companionship are universally loved, irrespective of city or countryside living. This breed's laid-back nature does not mean they're devoid of fun and play. On the contrary, French Bulldogs can be quite playful and are known for their often comical and entertaining antics, which only further endears them to their owners. Their affectionate demeanor, combined with a remarkably low barking tendency, makes them a joy to have around the house. French Bulldogs are sturdy, compact, and stocky, with a powerful muscular build that contradicts their small size. They have a smooth coat that comes in a variety of colors, from fawn and brindle to white and grey. Their facial expressions are human-like, and they're known to "talk" using a complex system of yawns, yips, and gargles. However, owning a French Bulldog does come with responsibilities. Their brachycephalic short-nosed nature makes them prone to certain health issues and less tolerant of extreme temperatures. Despite their muscular appearance, they are not the best swimmers, and care should be taken around bodies of water. Here are some tips to get you started: Puppy-proof your home: Remove any items that could be harmful to a puppy, such as toxic plants, small objects they could choke on, and chemicals. Create a safe space: Set up a quiet area in your home where your puppy can feel safe and secure. This should be away from high traffic areas and noisy appliances. Stock up on supplies: Before your puppy comes home, make sure you have everything you need, such as food, bowls, a collar and leash, toys, and a crate. By following these tips, you can be sure that your home is ready for your new English Bulldog puppy. Here are some tips to get you started: Establish a routine: Potty training is much easier when your puppy has a regular schedule. Take them out first thing in the morning, after naps and meals, and before bedtime. This will help your puppy understand what you want them to do. Be patient: Potty training takes time and patience. Do not punish your puppy if they have an accident, as this will only make them scared of going potty in front of you. By following these tips, you will be on your way to potty training your new English Bulldog puppy in no time. For the complete list please see our German Shepherd near me page page. In some cases, you may be able to find a German Shepherd puppy for free. However, this is not something that you should count on and you should always be very careful about who you get your dog from. There are a lot of people out there who are trying to unload dogs that they can no longer care for, and many of these dogs may have health or behavior problems. This will ensure that you get a great dog who will be a wonderful addition to your family. Also, if the type of GSD being sold in Maine is from imported stock from Europe or Germany then there could be additional costs associated. The best way to start your search is by contacting the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club and asking for a list of breeders who are members of their organizations. These breeders have pledged to uphold certain standards, and you can be sure that they are reputable breeders who care about their dogs. Another great way to find a responsible breeder is by word-of-mouth. Ask your friends, family, and coworkers if they know of any good German Shepherd breeders in Maine. Chances are, someone you know will have had some experience with a breeder and will be more than happy to recommend them to you. This will give you the chance to meet the dogs and see how they are being raised. You should also ask lots of questions, and make sure that you are comfortable with the breeder and their breeding program. This will at least give you a good idea of what your puppy will look like when they are fully grown. A good guarantee should cover things like genetic health problems, hip dysplasia, and epilepsy. A reputable Maine German Shepherd breeder will be more than happy to answer any of your questions, and they will be committed to finding you the perfect puppy for your family. These kinds of breeders are usually not reputable and will most likely sell you an unhealthy dog. If there are specific traits or behaviors that you expect your new German Shepherd pup to have, make sure to bring them up with your prospective breeder. For example, if you want a GSD who will be able to protect your home and family, let it be known. Most reputable breeders will only sell German Shepherd puppies who meet certain criteria. All of the puppies that they have for sale should be healthy, well-socialized, and have good temperaments. This is because breeders want to make sure that their puppies are going to good homes. Responsible breeders will also want to know about your ability to care for their puppies. If the breeder seems hesitant or unwilling to let you meet any of their past customers, it may be a sign that they have something to hide. A reputable Maine Geman Shepherd Breeder will provide references from past clients who were happy with their purchase. Check with at least references before committing any money to your purchase. This not only helps ensure that the breeder is reputable, but it also gives you a good sense of the quality of the dog you may be purchasing. For example, you can ask how long they have been using them as a vet. You should also ask if any other breeders use this vet as well or if they are more commonly used for family pets. Do your research and find a reputable breeder instead. If they are unwilling to give this information or dodge the question entirely, then you should find another breeder. Your Maine Geman Shepherd Breeder should be willing to provide you with detailed information on any genetic diseases that have affected their bloodline in the past including hip dysplasia and epilepsy. Reputable breeders deal with these issues responsibly by only breeding dogs who are healthy and free of these otherwise common ailments. A reputable German Shepherd Dog breeder in Maine will provide a health certificate for your new puppy. This document should list all of the vaccinations and deworming treatments that the pup has had. Here are a few essentials that every German Shepherd owner should have: A Safe Fenced In Area: Ideally, your dog run should be at least 6 feet tall and fully secured against escape. You may also want to invest in one or two outdoor electric fences so that you can contain your pup safely when they are outside without having to worry about them escaping. Plenty of Toys and Chews: German Shepherds love to play and chew on toys. Make sure you have a variety of balls, plush toys, ropes and hard chews available for your dog to keep them busy throughout the day. Not only will this keep them entertained, but it will also help to keep their teeth healthy. A Comfy Bed: Your German Shepherd will want a place to call their own, and nothing is more comfortable than a soft bed. Make sure you provide your dog with a cozy place to rest their head whether it be in their designated dog run or inside the house. As for food, you should stick to a high-quality kibble that is specifically designed for German Shepherds. Avoid giving your dog table scraps as this can lead to digestive problems. You will need to take them outside to pee and poop at the same time every day and reward them with treats when they go in the right spot. Be Patient — it can take a while for some puppies to get the hang of things, but eventually they will learn what is expected of them. Potty training your German Shepherd is not a one-size-fits-all process. With a little bit of patience and some consistent training, your pup will be going potty like a pro in no time. The best way to keep your new German Shepherd puppy safe and happy is to make sure you do your research before purchasing them from a breeder in Maine. We feed the puppies pedigree puppy chow 2x a day mixed with a half cup of milk. Care and Grooming: German Shepherds are energetic and require regular mental and physical exercise. German Shepherds also require regular grooming whether they are a long-haired German Shepherd or not. Expect to brush your German Shepherd's hair regularly, especially during shedding season. German Shepherds have strong, fast-growing nails that require regular trimming or grinding to prevent overgrowth, splitting, and cracking. Teeth should be regularly brushed with a dog-specific toothpaste German Shepherd Training: Training your German Shepherd is important as they are incredibly smart. Basic obedience training will strengthen the bond between you and your puppy and make your dog a better companion. With more rigorous obedience training, a German Shepherd can be used for a number of special jobs, including serving as a police dog, service dog, or obedience dog. German shepherds require a lot of exercise. They are extremely active dogs. Toys: Small tennis balls are considered a choking hazard for your pup as they grow. They are easily swallowed. Their large size, endless energy, and extreme cleverness may just be too much for some people. Our star ratings below will give you a better idea if the German Shorthaired Pointerpoodle will end up being your perfect pooch. But it can certainly be more of a challenge to know exactly how the puppies are going to turn out in terms of their appearance and temperament. The best way to prepare yourself is to become familiar with the traits and health conditions of both parent breeds. Poodle mixes are incredibly popular The Poodle is easily one of the most popular parent breeds for a whole host of hybrids. One example is, of course, the Labradoodle. Created in the s, the Labradoodle took the hybrid dog world by storm and paved the way for many other crosses using the Poodle. Poodles have a low-shedding coat, a trait that they usually pass on to their offspring. This makes hybrid breeds with a Poodle parent a great choice for those with allergies, who may not be able to own a dog breed that sheds heavily. Thanks to the fact that Poodles also come in three sizes—standard, miniature, and toy—they can be crossed easily with other dog breeds, from the large German Shorthaired Pointerpoodle to the tiny Cockapoo. As such, we can thank the Poodle for a huge number of designer hybrid breeds, many of which have gone on to become incredibly popular! While the Poodle might now be the National Dog of France, the Poodle was originally bred in Germany over years ago. They were used as retrievers for duck hunts, where they excelled thanks to their incredible swimming skills, ability to think for themselves, and curly protective coat. The German Shorthaired Pointer has also been bred in Germany since the s, to help with bird hunts. They are versatile and willing to please and are never happier than when doing something active in the great outdoors. Both parent breeds are eager to please their owners, as well as being affectionate and kind. German Shorthaired Pointerpoodles will thrive with owners who can provide consistency and love in equal measure. Are These Dogs Good for Families? Whether you want to go backpacking in the mountains or camping by the lake, these dogs will love to be included. They also love to play fetch or learn agility and tricks with younger handlers. Their willingness to please means they can be more forgiving to amateur handlers than some other breeds. While they can be great dogs for families with smaller children, their large size does mean that they can inadvertently knock toddlers over with their enthusiasm. Younger children should always be supervised and taught good dog handling habits to maintain a peaceful and happy home for both dog and their owners. With that said, if introduced correctly, they can live happily with other dogs, cats, and smaller pets. German Shorthaired Pointers can be at risk of bloat due to their deep chests, and this is something that may also affect your German Shorthaired Pointerpoodle. While you might not feel like a long walk on a Sunday, your dog certainly will! These dogs make great partners for trail running, cycling, and hiking too. Your German Shorthaired Pointerpoodle is likely to love water, so retrieving games at the beach or lake is a great way to exercise this breed both mentally and physically. A securely fenced backyard is a great idea so you have somewhere for training sessions and games. Their intelligence means they can also quickly pick up bad habits, so puppy classes are an excellent idea to get you both working together consistently and effectively. Bored German Shorthaired Pointerpoodles are likely to turn their attention to finding something to destroy, so make sure you keep those brains well-occupied! Leaving it long can look pretty, but it can easily end up becoming tangled and matted, especially given how active this breed is. Any breeder will be happy to chat with you about these in more detail, as well as provide information on the health tests that the parent dogs may have had. Minor Conditions. I'm impressed. I love my GSP! She knows how to work and is learning to be a phenomenal hunter even at such a young age. Pebbles has been the most amazing addition to our family. My children fell in love at 1st sight. After much hard work on our end of convincing "The Man" of the house that we needed her, she's taken over our hearts and our house ever since. She's brainwashed the children into giving her a multitude of hugs, kisses, belly rubs and bedtime snuggles. I will be forever grateful to Heather and James for blessing our family in a way that words can't begin to describe. Clearly, our continued return over the years is an attestation in and of itself of how pleased we've been with the dogs. While all 3 certainly have there own unique personalities, all of them have qualities in common that would bring us back again in the future: They are incredibly smart, they are easy to work with and train, they've been loving and incredibly trustworthy with our children, and, of course, all 3 demonstrate innate instinct and true joy for the hunt. Submitted by: Eric on Dec 21, Bought 5 month old gap. Tons of drive, bold, birdy. Also a joy to have in the house. They are very knowledgeable and always willing to help and answer any questions you have. And for the dogs themselves they are awesome hunters and great also family dogs. Thanks again rose point kennels! Submitted by: Allison on Dec 20, James and Heather were wonderful to work with, very knowledgeable and quality pup. He was very shy, but full of energy. He is very loving to all of my family. I had him hunting 2 days after I got him and he has been to South Dakota the last 3 years. He points solid and is a retrieving machine. He loves to be around the family. He has been easy to train on an invisible fenced yard, with what areas of the house are off limits and we can't imagine not having Silver as a part of our family. James did a great job showing off his skills prior to purchase and was willing to meet me closer to my house for drop off of the dog. He chipped him for me. James has also provided really good nutrition advice as well as support via online communication. I highly recommend Rose Point for a loving pet that will perform really well in the field. Our pup had wonderful natural ability we were able to work with and he is now a great hunting dog. He is well on his way to achieving more titles and not only that, he is great in the everyday hunting field. We couldn't imagine hunting without his aide! James and Heather are very up front and clear on what they expect from us as owners and were very helpful with any questions we have. We really appreciate their continued support! Not only that but they offer other services like grooming, boarding and hunt training. If we need any of these things it is so much easier to bring our dog to a familiar place and feel confident that he is being properly taken care of! Submitted by: Tiffany Taylor on Dec 20, Rose point breeds exceptionally great dogs. Our gsp is one of the best we have owned.

They have been breeding since and emphasized field performance, health, and longevity. Not only are they breeders of Labrador Retrievers but Golden Retrievers as well. All puppies come warranted against hip and elbow growth disorders and homozygous genetic defects such as centronuclear myopathy and exercise-induced collapse. RockErin Kennels advise they only breed a few select litters each year. This facility also participates heavily in dog training as well. In a recent article, a licensed professional counselor for more than twenty-five years, explained how owning a Lab can help produce healthier, happier, more well adjusted children. Here is an excerpt from her article: Dogs are better than popping pills or drinking elixers. Children with dogs for pets have been found to have lower cholesterol, lower blood pressure, and fewer overall physical complaints than those without dogs. In fact, there are several diseases where dogs have been used to help those who have the disease. Two of these are: rheumatoid arthritis and emotional disturbance stemming from cases of severe abuse. We have 4 children and many animals. We fell in love with the traditional American Bulldog breed. We take pride in our large, healthy, awesome tempered, bulldogs. Our average dog weighs over 95 pounds. Our dogs are a very important part of our lives, they live in our homes. Our dogs ride around with us and are socialized by going to stores, camp grounds, ball games, boating and numerous other outdoor activities. My 4 children make sure that our puppies are well socialized and are ready for anything. We stand behind our puppies and offer a warranty on their health. We offer excellent quality, champion bred, bulldogs. I personally do not show my dogs, I have 4 children and a farm to look after, so I can not travel to dog shows. I have champion pedigrees on all of my dogs in their files, but these pedigrees do not protect my home, they do not love my family, they are not our best friends and long time companions. Please check my MANY references. Come see for yourself, my dogs are happy and healthy. If you choose to show your dog, great. .No junk!! No health issues!! They make good pets, are natural hog dogs, and are smart and able to be trained to herd livestock or hunt different types of animals. History of my yard. Around the turn of the century, I drove from South Carolina to south Georgia and traded a boat for four hog dogs. I had no idea that I was entering a life long relationship with a breed with whose existance I was hardly aware of. Nemo caught sixty wild boar in six months. I took him to my first bulldog show and had him registered as my foundation dog "Stevenson's Captain Nemo". Nemo's only short coming was that he had not been raised as a pet and was an all-buisness alpha male and not very people friendly. Having had a Great Dane that was a great pet and awesome hog catcher, I knew that a good working dog could also be a good pet. I quickly began a search for a similar bred pup that I could raise myself. The more I learned about the early blood, the more I decided that was what I wanted. I met others who like me preferred this and wanted to preserve this early stock. I leaned towards the "Old Time Southern Bulldog" name because I felt it was a truer description of what I was breeding. Ironically folks with American Bulldogs were coming back to me to buy my dogs to recover the characteristics that the early blood American Bulldogs were known for. Another irony is that the NKC has changed it's rules in what it accepts as American Bulldogs a number of times in the years that I have been breeding them. They had been working and breeding these early blood, bulldog, hog dogs along side Jay Dorsey for years and all right here in SC near my home. These were the founders of the "Old Time Southern Bulldogs" breed. I bred Sheba to a couple of Stout's dogs and bought a pup from him. This pup "Stevenson's Jet Rountree" turned out awesome, better than I could have hoped for. Jet caught three wild boar the first time I took him out. Born August 11, , He is now 85 lbs. He is my mainstay, a friendly pet, hard core hog dog with every bit the prey drive of Nemo, and an excellent stud dog. I've bred and linebred him number of times with the goal of reproducing him. Jets' first breeding was to Baby Doll I. Jet has been super healthy, prolific, athletic, strong, non-dog agressive but with high prey drive and at 9 years old is still going strong. His offspring are now catching hogs from Mexico to Australia. One of Jets' pups, "Big Bossman" puts it all on the line every day for the "South-East Wildlife Controll", catchin Hogs, treeing coons or catching an unruly bull. A Texas hog hunter reported that he had bred the dog I sold him, raised a litter of pups, sold them to other hog hunters all over the state and at 4 months old, every one of them was catching hogs. That is what I like to hear! I have been incredibly fortunate to own "Jet Rountree "and I have linebred him repeatedly because he embodies what I desire in conformation, temperament, prey drive and intelligence. These are things a dog is born with! .I credit Jet's make-up to their discrete line breeding of "Stout's Bosshog of Dorsey". And if you count "Ladybird II's" blood, which I do because she is Bosshog's sister and an awesome dog in her own right. Now I've been line-breeding Jet to the point that I am having to bring in new blood. My OTSB's, although they make good family pets and protection dogs, are basically OSW's, which in my case are standard type, early blood, American Bulldogs, very heavily outcrossed to White Eglish and used mainly for hog hunting. Jet and I.

He is amazing. He is calm yet playful, affectionate, and a total love. Literally nothing phases him. He has been exposed to thunder, fire works, loud mechanical noises, vacuums right up to his crate, umbrellas, and all of the other things people find puppies dislike with no issues. He barked inside of the house for the first time ever two days ago, and it looks like he did so because we had a fox skulking around the house. He prefers to be with us all the time, but has no problem going into his crate when we need him to do so. He is quiet as a mouse from the time we crate him at night until we get him out in the morning typically between pm and 6 am. Training has gone very easily. He has occasional stubborn moments, but for the most part, unless we are working on something brand new or really difficult, we do not need to treat with food any longer as he is extremely responsive to praise and petting. He could not get over how smart and gentle Brady is. Brady is very social, both with people and with other dogs. He goes to puppy play group two days a week and his tail starts wagging the moment the van pulls up at the house to take him there. The biggest training challenges we have had with him came from his desire to meet and greet every person and dog he sees. The last big basic thing that we continue to need to work on is jumping up on new people. If we know someone new is coming to the house, we keep a leash on him and he is getting much better about not jumping. I would say he is 90 percent there. He walks beautifully on a leash until we are about fifty feet from returning to our house, then he gets the zoomies and either pulls or tries to grab the leash. We generally stop and put him into sit, down for few seconds, then resume the walk. Normally we only have to do that once. He is still a puppy, though, as you can see from his morning routine which I have in the video below! Catharines, on with Jamie and Billy. He is a mini bernedoodle from Sheena and Pickle .He is about 50lbs but thinks he is a 5lb lap dog. He has a wavy coat. Some words we would use to describe motley are affectionate, happy, goofy, friendly, smart, easy going and lazy. He is very laid back. He loves to sleep in and relax but will run around and play when the time is right. The cottage in the summer is his happy place where he will run around and swim and play like crazy. He loves to go for boat cruises. He is super smart, was very easy to train and has always been a huge love bug. He loves to snuggle. Almost every morning when our alarm goes off he knows he can come into bed so he will quietly come into our room and put his paws up and wait for a boost. He has the most expressive human like eyes that completely make my heart melt. Motley has been coming to work with me since he was 9 weeks old which has made him extremely social with people of all ages, shapes and sizes. He loves everyone and is not shy to lean on a stranger or sit on their feet. He is our office greeter and official mascot. Every person that comes into the office or meets him absolutely adores him. He is literally a celebrity around my office and in our neighborhood. When we are out and about we get stopped constantly with people wondering what kind of a dog he is and then commenting on how awesome he is. Because of his laid back nature and incredible social skills we decided he would make the perfect therapy dog. He passed his CGN test in April and has proved himself to be an amazing therapy dog on the few visits we have been on so far. Motley is our first dog and we could not imagine life without him! Sherry picked the perfect puppy to fit our family. Please feel free to email me if you have any questions. She has captured our hearts, to the point where we are wondering why we waited so long to adopt a dog. She is the first dog for both of us. Waldo is a sweet, loving, mischievous, and funny little dog. Always wakes up with bounds of energy and so happy to see us. Whenever we take her anywhere, people always stop to pet her and ask what type of dog she is and gush about how gorgeous she is! I had my heart set on a puppy just like the one I saw in the picture. I stalked the SwissRidge website day after day. I will never forget the day Sherry called me out of the blue. We needed this black standard bernedoodle with a white cross on his chest, and a tan swirl over his eyes! From that day on, we knew this pup we named Raglan was going to be a wonderful addition to our growing family. He was an adorable pup, full of energy, dedication, and spunk. We loved him so much that we knew we had room for another. Our youngest daughter wanted a doodle she could bond with, something smaller, so the following Christmas Santa left a dog crate filled with toys with a note saying we were on the list for a mini bernedoodle. Sula was born the next month and our pack was growing! Sula added a new energy to our pack. She was a playful pup who tested any and all limits she was given. With the help of a local trainer, and a quick education in being the leader of my pack, Raglan and Sula were a dream come true. Now that we had mini and a standard bernedoodle, my love for SwissRidge doodles continued to grow, I hinted around that one more pup would complete our pack. A tiny bernedoodle would make our family complete. I never considered myself to be a small dog person, but there was something about these tiny pups that turned me around. My husband must be as crazy as I am because he contacted Sherry on his own and wanted to surprise me with my third benedoodle for my birthday! Raglan, was from the litter of Chantelle, an Apricot standard poodle, and Dominique, a handsome bernese mountain dog. Raglan is a wonderful pup but he did take sometime and effort to get him that way. Even though I read the books and studied the puppy handbook, I still made some mistakes. Luckily with the support of of a great trainer, I realized what I was doing wrong. Raglan is a wonderful companion and family member. He walks down the street like he is a Clydesdale horse and if one of his pack members breaks away from the pack he does not stand down until they return. He is loyal, loving, and with his long legged stature and winning personality he is the best of all worlds. Raglan will be four in June .Sula is a mini doodle from Juno, a bernese mountain dog, and Eddie, a poodle, born January 2, .She is a total love and attention hound. Throughout my day I always have the feeling that sometimes I am being watched. If I leave the house she will assume her position in the front bay window and wait for my return. Sula loves everything and everyone. She always wants to know what is going on. Whether you are driving a car, sitting on the couch, or yes even sitting at the kitchen counter, Sula is right by your side. She is very vocal and opinionated and will express her opinion any chance she gets! We only wish we knew what she was trying to say. Gibbs, is a tiny bernedoodle from the litter of Kia and Pickles born May 24, .He is as smart as he is adorable. Never having a small dog before Gibbs weighs 15 pounds at 11 months we decided to fly from Boston to California with Gibbs in a carry on bag not knowing what to expect. With a five hour flight ahead of us, we were prepared for anything and everything! Gibbs was unbelievable! I was truly amazed at how well he adjust to this new adventure. We knew Sherry was special the first time we emailed her. We knew she and her pups were worth every penny we would spend on them. Once you make the commitment to Sherry and her pups you will never look back, or wonder if you made the right choice. And then, when you hold your precious treasure in your arms for the very first time, you will not be able to control that warm and fuzzy feeling that will run through your entire body. The testing, the care, the follow through, and most importantly her love for her job are just some of the reasons why Sherry Rupke is the very best Breeder of the Pack. Murphy Uli Meet Uli. She is owned by the Cook family. Her parents are Molly and Pickle. She is a mini a f1b bernedoodle that weighs 20 pounds at 21 weeks. Her final weight should be in the high 30lbs range. I had no idea that a hybrid existed. My interest was peaked with the Bernedoodle, but there was the initial sticker shock for a pup. I tried to find a breeder in the US. Our family was in love with the Bernedoodle. I inquired with every US breeder that I could find. Not one was successfully breeding medium sized dogs. My search returned me to Swiss Ridge Kennels. I was drawn to the effort that Sherry puts into selecting the breeding pair. The US breeders that I had spoken with seemed to lack this forethought. My impression of their process was this: I have a beautiful, affectionate Bernese female and am rolling the dice with a male poodle — he seems like a great guy. I hope the mating is successful and I will analyze the puppies genetics and temperaments to determine if I am following the right breeding path. Granted, all hybrid breeders do this, and it is an art, but Sherry seems to take a more scientific approach before the mating occurs. And I figured, well if the Goldendoodle breeders have been doing it for years and years, then I will trust this stranger in Canada. After excellent breeding, and a lot of worrying on my part, Molly had her puppies. After fantastic early puppy care, Sherry selected a spirited female for us. Uli is a perfect fit for our active and loudish family. She arrived on her 8th week birthday and shipped from Ontario to Denver. The arrival day was very long for Uli, but you could not tell. The paper in her kennel was dry. When I do it again, I will fly to Sherry and bring the pup home in-cabin. All of the above breeding attributes were evident when we held Uli for the first time. Training is beyond easy. Uli loves to learn and please. Potty training was shockingly a breeze. Uli has the perfect combination of Berner and Poodle traits. She immediately adapted to each family member in a unique way. She must be a dog genius and is the perfect amount of spunk. She does not shed — not a trait that I thought I needed but a definite surprise, and now a requirement. Uli loves everyone that she meets, especially young kids. She believes every dog that she meets should play. Uli will play all day long but settles immediately when in her crate, on the couch or on the bed. The kids love how excited Uli is to see them after school, and you can hardly see her wagging tail. She has the most beautiful multicolored coat and white tipped, black tail. She loves to cuddle. Thank You Sherry!! They are both owned by the Hutchins famiy. But alas, Finley is too quick for little Beckett. As the weeks pass and Beckett matures, the distance between them in their cat-and-mouse game lessens. In a matter of time, Beckett will have Finley by the tail, matching her step by step. They bring so much laughter, joy, fun and lightheartedness to our everyday life. He is owned by the Fairman family. He has a great temperament and if you can believe it a great sense of humour. He is very intelligent which is both a plus and a minus. On the plus side he was basically house trained from the time he walked in the door. We have to think very hard to remember him having an accident in the house. He was very easy to train. In each of the 3 or 4 training classes we attended he was always in the running for the best dog in the class. On the negative side if you are not consistent and develop your role as the leader of the pack you will quickly find that he starts training you. We have never had any issues of aggression towards humans or other animals since we have had him. In fact he at times can be overly friendly and become over excited when greating someone new. He is definitely a conversation piece. We have not met a person yet who in not immediately smitten by him and wants to take him home. We were in Hilton Head last March and walking the beach or in town we were constantly stopped by everyone wanting to pat him and find out more about him. Sherry at Swiss Ridge is great. If you take the time to fill out your questionnaire completely and honestly she is very good at matching you with a pup that matches your family. I asked if she could provide me with a mini that would be close to 50lbs. Bernie at his last check up weighed in at 50lbs. As stated prior his is the perfect dog for our family and our stage in life. Sherry has always been there to answer any questions we have had in a timely manner and has always been very supportitive. As much as I feel my opinion is biased over the summer Swiss Ridge held its first annual Doodle Romp. Over 80 owners from all over North America attended. It was at this event that I realized that Bernie was not the exception but the norm when it came to Swiss Ridge Doodles. Both the owners and dogs seemed cut from the same cloth. With over 80 dogs engaging in various forms of free play and interacting with a large number of humans there were not any issues of aggressiveness or inappropriate behaviour that I witnessed. Swiss Ridge owners are very special and dedicated to the breed as witnessed by the Swiss ridge group on face book. Here you find owners who share their good times the rough spots and very good advice and support. Some tips I can give are 1- find a good training book and enroll your pup in puppy classes and others as needed. As stated the doodles are very smart dogs who are easily trained but you need to know how and be consistent to establish you and your family are the pack leaders. Because dogs are pack animals when you bring your pup home crate him in your bedroom at night. They want to be part of the pack. This was something we came to understand by accident and had reconfirmed in talking with other and reading training materials. You can not go wrong with a doodle especially one from Swiss Ridge!! Sherry does a great job providing well mannered healthy pups that meet the needs of their owners. As soon as we can convince my wife Bernie need a sibling for company I will be in line for a standard doodle. Good luck feel free to ask if you have any further questions. So below we have created a list of questions you should ask the breeder. If you have looking such as searching for a service or watch dog and cannot find one at the shelter, it is a good idea to get one from a reputable breeder. Also, when you visit a breeder, check out their surroundings and all the facilities they offer to their puppies. You need to understand what is the difference between a good breeder and a puppy mill. List of the Questions you should Ask the Breeder: 1. How long have you been experiencing the breeding of this breed the breed you are planning to get? They should have good experience in it. Are you from a club of any race? If he says yes Ask for evidence. Do you raise any other type of dogs besides this breed? Are the Puppies healthy? If you are looking for the best Bernedoodle Breeders in Ontario, you can consider one of these breeders. She is an exceptional dog in every way. She adores and loves everyone she meets and they adore her. From the day we got her in early October, she has been a joy to have. She has the run of three acres on our property and loves to run and swim. The picture I have sent you is Woof with her constant companion Smudge. We got the kitten at the same time we got Woof. They are inseparable. They play and explore together and sleep together. She loves her groomer and is wild about her vet. She sailed through her neutering with flying colors and looks forward to her monthly appointments. The cat is usually the instigator. In another picture she was about 4 months old at the time. She adds so much to our day to day family life. She is so attentive to their needs always. She can play rough with my son when he is wanting to play rough and tumble with her. And Piper can be the best lap dog around as well. She seems to know what the vibe is in the house at all times. It really is amazing. With this being our first dog, we were a little worried about not having a say at what puppy we got. But as everyone told us — Sherry knows best. You truly do, Sherry! Piper has fit into our crazy hectic lifestyle. She loves her car rides around for carpool and her plane rides out to our vacation house with us. She loves to swim, run, jump, and chase just about anything. Piper is a tiny bernedoodle and has definitely showed us the larger side of the tiny breed. She is 26 lbs. She has very long legs, a beautiful coat, and the cutest little underbite. She has been extremely healthy, eats like a champ, never sheds, and is very smart. We love our Piper Sierra! Thanks, Sherry! He is a tiny bernedoodle owned by the Williams family. Born August 13, .Hendrix was born and his parents are Zoey x Stitch. He has SO much personality. He is spunky, playful, and very smart, yet he is also incredibly cuddly and sweet. He is a dog you can wrestle on the ground with, but will also sit in your lap and cuddle. He LOVES my other dogs and has found his place right in the middle…he respects my 75 pound German Shepherd, Stella, as top dog, but has put my 90 pound Goldendoodle, Woody, in his place — bottom of the pack! But Woody is very submissive and fine with that. I was on the fence about getting a tiny Bernedoodle, as I have always been a big-dog person; however, since I already have two big dogs, I felt it was best to get a tiny, and I have to say, I really love his size. He looks bigger than he weighs because of all his hair, and he is easier to travel with. I have taken Hendrix on trips with the family when he was around 3 months old and could still go in a carrier under the seat of the airplane, and he was perfect on every flight, sleeping the entire way. He mingled with many unfamiliar dogs, was all around the horses, rode around in the golf cart, stayed in the hotel with us, and he received many compliments about how well behaved he is and how adorable he is. The most difficult thing about Hendrix is when he does do something naughty, it is SO hard to punish him because he is so darn cute, and, when he gets in trouble, he is REALLY remorseful and you can tell he feels really, really bad! He has a way of making YOU feel guilty! Thank you for producing such a wonderful, fun breed, and bringing so much joy and love into not only our lives, but everyone else who has the privilege of owning one of your dogs. I know that there will be another Bernedoodle in my future. He is owned by the Douglas family. Thanks to the people at SwissRidge Kennels, we brought him home with more than enough information to incorporate him into our lives. Sherry gave us a lot of information in person at the pick up and backed us up with everything written out in our puppy package. Before getting Paco it was a long and fretful wait, wondering what kind of pup we would get. We knew we would not be disappointed as we had a friend with a SwissRidge standard Bernedoodle. We had our doubts and discussions as we are retired and thought we would not ever get a dog again. Having always had a dog in the house or two and a cat, we missed having one. We are thinking we hit the jackpot with Paco. He has met several new people with the waggiest of little tails for everyone. He is learning simple commands already. He is still not on the loose as we are keeping him safe until he gets all of his shots. We are learning what works and trying to be consistent. This puppy is proving to be very adaptable. He does have his moments, but so far time-outs have proven to settle him down. In two weeks, he meets the grandchildren. We are sure they will be lifelong pals for Paco. She is the obliging passenger on the imaginary bus, comes along for the ride on the kayak and will play fetch or chase whenever the boys ask her to. She loves to join us for great long hikes and, despite being a tiny, will keep up with us and walk the distance. In the summer, she loves the water and will play on the beach or swim in the lake. At puppy daycare she always finds a best friend to snuggle with, but will get right in and play with the others regardless of size. Her best friend is a large dog five times her weight. Both of these puppies have had training by our in-house trainer, Lucas. Bella loves neighborhood walks, hiking, Frisbee, a good game of fetch, and swimming. She is so personable with everyone of all ages. She visits with me in an extend-a-care facility and just seems to sense when she needs to be gentle. It is difficult to have a walk without being stopped on the street to be told how cute she is. Bella house-trained very quickly and easily learned obedience commands. She has a very high energy level but that affords her the ability to enjoy the active lifestyle that we lead. She is never far from her owner and enjoys car rides, vacationing or just hanging out. Bella gets professionally groomed about every five weeks to prevent matting and then only requires a quick daily brushing. It also makes it easier when she spends a great deal of time outside hiking, swimming and playing in the snow. She does not shed with the exception of some hair in the brush when she is groomed. Bella has experienced zero health issues. She has so many goofy facial expressions and mannerisms that just make you happy all the time. She loves to snuggle and follows me everywhere. We love our little fur ball. My hubby never thought he would want a smaller pup but Brittany has stolen his heart, too. She gets along great with children. Thank you, Sherry, for making our family complete! She is so precious! Although we were anxious to get her home, we decided it would be best for us to leave her for four weeks of imprinting. I am so thankful we did! The imprinter did an amazing job of establishing her crate-training schedule sleeping six hours from night one at home and got her basic commands up and running! She adores her toys and is already starting to play fetch. She is very curious about the world around her, taking every opportunity to chase butterflies, watch the birds, or sit and observe cars and people passing by. She is such a delight! We had never before seen a breeder so well loved, respected and trusted. Nor an entrepreneur willing to be so open and honest as to let a social media community of thousands discuss the good, the bad, the great, the ugly about their SwissRidge dogs. The forum of support that Sherry had created and allowed to flow for the benefit of her clients was simply amazing to us. Our family decided that a dog from Sherry was worth the investment, especially since we were looking for a lifetime family member. That decided…deposit in …. This is crazy talk!! AND we have to drool over the pictures as they are updated with no clue which one we are getting?? Have I entered the twilight zone?? Although this approach at first seems ridiculous, it quickly became clear that there was a method to the perceived madness…temperament testing and family matching. All I can say is that Sherry indeed has the magical touch when matching puppies to families. We have kept in touch with the other families in our litter and I can confidently report that each pup is indeed the best match for each family! Crazy, right? Fenway was 2. Right from the beginning she was a positive bundle of energy. She loved her crate, was not much of a nipper, and potty trained within a week. She is the social butterfly of any group and makes friends with all dogs. Her boyfriend at school is a three-year-old German shepherd. She is confident, cuddly, super intelligent and obsessed with balls and toys. She also works with me as a volunteer therapy dog through the Burlington Humane Society. Her disposition of being social and confident lends her well for this important position. You were absolutely correct in your book about all of the puppy phases and attention a puppy needs — I referred to it often. Finn is a great dog — happy, curious, funny, sweet — all of the attributes we wanted! We love watching him learn and grow. Finn is our boat dog and his favorite place is out on the dock with my husband or even better, in the boat fishing. He enjoys the breeze when we are up and running and is right there when we catch a fish! He can launch about halfway across! He is particularly fond of the 3 year old and she loves walking him on his leash around the backyard. She can tell him to sit and stay and he will do it! It is so cute to watch their friendship and innocence. We leave the crate door open at night, but he prefers to sleep with his pack in bed! He just wants to be touching us somewhere! Thank you for your excellence in breeding such a fantastic pup! She weighs 8. Harley gets along incredibly well with other dogs. She lights up our life on a daily basis. Our experience with Sherry was and is amazing. Bo was a surprise birthday present a year ago and he was by far the best birthday present I could have ever received. Bo has a huge personality for a little 10 lb. He absolutely loves people, especially kids, but also loves every dog he sees. He loves walks and runs and hates being wet. Bo is also a great travel companion on airplanes with no issues at all. Bo completes our family for now but we definitely want a second doodle down the road and would choose none other than a SwissRidge. Sherry is one of the most calm, helpful and smart people I know, which was extremely helpful for me as a first time dog owner. Around 6 months old, Bo developed a prolapsed urethra and required surgery to fix the problem. Throughout the whole process, Sherry stayed very involved and wanted to help in any way. Click to see more Golden Cavaliers, a Specialty Crossbreed by our family is a labor of love. As a family man, I wanted to leave a legacy, and what better way to do so than by bringing other families together over a beautiful golden cavalier puppy. It was our daughter Rachel who sparked the idea of a specialty crossbreed. She has a brain injury and gets seizures, and when we first started raising Golden Retrievers, she found a purpose in taking care of the mothers and their puppies. But she needed a bit more easy-going dog. While their temperament was perfect for her — sweet and playful — we thought a smaller dog might be more manageable for her. The King Charles Cavalier Spaniel also has a great temperament, is smaller, and has a gentler energy level and was such a great fit for our family. And so, our Golden Cavaliers business was born. Cavagroodles previously named Mini Groodles Our unique Cavagroodles are a cross between a Miniature Golden Retriever and a Moyen Poodle — so they have the calmness of the King Charles Cavalier, the playfulness of the Golden Retriever and the non shedding coat and intelligence of the Poodle. Their adult weight will range from 14 — 18 kg and adult height will be range from 35 — 55 cm at the shoulder. They are also not too large — they grow to about 35 — 55 cm high at the shoulder and weight will range from 14 kg. Medium Groodles Our Medium Groodles are not as large as Standard Groodles due to their parentage being a Moyen Poodle and a Golden Retriever — so they grow to around kg and up to around cm high at the shoulder. Standard Groodles range from kg and cm high at the shoulder. Groodles are non shedding dogs well known for their intelligence and affectionate, friendly nature. Follow us on Instagram and Facebook so you can see more photos of our dog family:. Life Span Did You Know? This cross is meant to produce a smaller version of a Golden Retriever that retains the classic Golden look and their characteristic friendly and sweet temperament. Mini Golden Retrievers tend to maintain a temperament very similar to Golden Retrievers. They tend to have a sweet, open, and friendly nature. Mini Goldens get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. These dogs tend to make great family pets and can also be found working as service dogs or therapy dogs. Due to their smaller size, the Miniature Golden Retriever is a highly adaptable dog breed. As long as they get enough exercise, they are happy in apartments as well as larger homes with yards. They also do well in just about any climate. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to extreme heat or cold. Because these dogs are so people-oriented, they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time as they would much rather be an active member of the family. For Mini Golden Retrievers, these could include elbow dysplasia, heart issues, eye disease, and hip dysplasia. Asking the breeder about the genetic history of the parents and checking out available health clearances or tests can help allay potential health concerns. All of the dog breeds in the cross for a Mini Golden Retriever are highly trainable. So, these dogs tend to be highly trainable, intelligent, and eager to please their owners. They tend to be a good fit for dog owners of all experience levels, including first-time dog owners. They respond best to positive training methods focused on praise, play, and reward. Although the aim is to have the Miniature Golden Retriever look just like a smaller version of a Golden Retriever, there will be variance in the coats because it is a mixed dog breed. You may have puppies that look identical to a Golden Retriever or you may have puppies with tightly curled or wavy coats from their Poodle or Spaniel parents. With the Poodle in the cross, there may be a chance of a low-shedding coat, but you will want to be prepared for a dog that will shed moderately year-round and that requires regular brushing and bathing with the occasional professional grooming session. Floppy ears tend to be more prone to ear infections, but regular checks and careful cleaning can help prevent them. Dental care for dogs is so important. But, it is often overlooked, which is why dental disease is one of the most common health issues in dogs. The Miniature Golden Retriever is likely to be a high energy dog that requires plenty of exercise to be happy and healthy. Daily walks, plus playtime and some extra activity should be sufficient for this dog. They will likely enjoy any activity that means they get to do things with you, which means they may enjoy hiking with you, taking trips to the dog park , swimming, or even training to compete in dog sports. A fully-grown Miniature Golden Retriever usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. A Mini Golden Retriever generally lives years. Dwarfism does occur in Golden Retrievers, which results in a smaller Golden Retriever and can also cause additional health concerns. Meeting the parent breeds in person and asking to see health tests can help you verify that you have a Mini Golden Retriever. Miniature Golden Retriever Puppies for Sale. english golden retriever puppies mn - The poodle's bright demeanor and people-pleasing nature make him an excellent pal for humans and peacekeeper among other pets. Standard poodles are the most athletic and agile of all the poodle types , and they take quickly to training. Poodles also have the privilege of being low odor and among the least-shedding of all coated dogs. So they're pretty much perfect, right? Not so fast. The timid poodle can border on neurotic at times, and he's easily stressed out by noise and any amount of chaos or conflict. Poodles can also be time-consuming and expensive to groom. But if you can deal with these quirks, you'll be rewarded with a loyal, lively pet who loves to make you happy. Appearance Poodles are known for their curly coat, long pointed nose, and small dark eyes. They're also famously associated with one of the most ornate dog grooming styles ever—the topiary continental clip, which leaves curly pom-poms of hair carefully shaped around the joints and chest. Those unfamiliar with poodles might be surprised to find that the flamboyant continental clip is largely seen only on show dog poodles—family pet poodles usually go with the more subtle sporting clip, which is a short and fuss-free style. You'll most often find poodles with white, black, or brown coats, but they exist in a wide range of shades from apricot to silver. Miniature poodles are between 10—15 inches, and toy poodles are under 10 inches. Standard poodles can weigh between 50—70 pounds, with female dogs tending to weigh less than the male ones. The standard is the largest and strongest of all the three poodle types. Temperament Poodles are loyal, smart, and playful. And while they're friendly pups, they will bark to alert you to any noises or visitors. The breed's response to unfamiliar faces can range from friendly and engaging to shy and reserved. These highly intelligent dogs also seem to have a sense for reading their owners' body language and expressions, making them intuitive companions. Their sensitivity doesn't stop there; they're also prone to getting pretty emotional themselves. Poodles are hypersensitive pooches who can be easily startled by touch or sound, so watch out for bouts of anxiety. These happy, high-strung animals love to romp around, bounce, run, and play nearly non-stop as puppies and young dogs. But their activity levels do change with maturity, and you can expect them to calm down a bit between 18 months and 2 years of age. Standard poodles are also generally more calm than miniature and toy poodles. Living Needs Poodles need tons of exercise and opportunity for movement, so access to a spacious fenced-in yard is ideal. If you don't have a big backyard to offer your pup, make sure you make plenty of time for walks and visits to the dog park or another pet-safe open area for them to run and play. If you're a nature-lover, a poodle is a great pick. They're naturally adventurous and love the water , so they make excellent outdoor companions. Try not to spend too much time away; this curly companion thrives on time spent with his people and poodles can develop separation anxiety issues if he doesn't get enough attention. They're gentle and polite with kids , but because of their hypersensitive nature they can be easily overwhelmed by small, loud children and will need time to decompress. Poodles are better suited for families with older or no children. Similarly, if your home is often chaotic, noisy, or conflict-prone, your peaceful poodle may develop some anxiety issues. Poodles much prefer and appreciate a calm, quiet living arrangement. Care The poodle is the original "hypoallergenic" dog breed thanks to his single-layer coat that doesn't shed much though remember that no dog is percent hypoallergenic. If you or someone in your family suffers from dog allergies, a poodle could be the pup for you! But heads up: His coat, low-shedding as it may be, requires a lot of attention. And, even if they are taking the dog to a groomer, they will still need to keep up with daily needs, including brushing. Most owners have their poodle's coat cut to one short length, in a grooming style known as the sporting clip. Poodles who are left with their manes to grow need meticulous daily brushing —once their curly coats become matted, the only solution is to shave them down and start over. Unless you're taking up the clippers and teaching yourself to groom your poodle, you'll need frequent grooming appointments. It's an expense you'll want to keep in mind when considering adding a poodle to the family. Poodles are extremely active, athletic dogs who need plenty of daily exercise and love long walks. They're up for adventure and love to stay busy, so it won't be hard to keep them moving. Most poodles love to swim, and swimming can be an excellent workout for your curly cutie. They also love playing fetch and can get some of that abundant energy out chasing after balls and sticks in the backyard. Thanks to their high intelligence and people-pleasing nature, poodles are fairly easy to train and enjoy making their humans happy. Keep training upbeat and encouraging, with lots of praise and consistency to get your eager-to-please poodle in his groove. Relative to other breeds, the poodle is easy to potty train. It also often leads to a dog who enjoys learning and wants to participate in other activities," Hunter Mayer says. Check with your veterinarian about the appropriate recommendations for dog food brands and ingredients, how much and how often to feed your dog , and other dietary concerns. Health Poodles have a lifespan of 12—15 years and are generally healthy dogs. Additionally, reputable breeders routinely test breeding stock for health issues, so if you're taking care to research the breeder you're working with when picking a purebred dog, you should know the dog's lineage and what health problems if any run in the family. Standard poodles are also prone to contracting Addison's disease , an issue with the adrenal glands, as well as a life-threatening condition called bloat , which is an accumulation of gas or fluid in the dog's stomach. Keeping regularly scheduled veterinary appointments will help you stay up-to-date on your pup's health and well being. History The name "poodle" most likely comes from the word pudelin, a German-language reference to the breed's fondness for water, according to the AKC. The breed originated in Germany as duck-hunting, water retrieval dogs. The flamboyant continental clip haircut style that most associate with the poodle has functional origins. Because the dogs were jumping into freezing water to retrieve their owners' hunt prey and too much heavy hair would weigh down the dog, owners would strategically clip the fur on their limbs to give them freedom of movement while swimming, leaving longer hair near the dog's organs and joints to protect them in the cold water. Courtesy of Presidential Pet Museum The poodle's friendly temperament and lovable looks eventually caught the attention of members of French nobility, and the breed soon became popular throughout Europe. Poodles' natural elegance and trainability also made them the stars of many European circus acts. The standard poodle was eventually bred down to the miniature and toy poodles we also know and love today. In fact, the poodle is the only breed with three size classifications. Fun Facts The poodle is the national dog of France despite the breed originating in Germany. The French call the breed caniche, which means "duck dog. Was this page helpful? That is one of the biggest myths in dogdom. First, ignore the silly show-ring clips. Poodles can be clipped into shorthaired, normal -looking dogs who are a snap to brush. Poodles also have the advantage of being the lightest-shedding, most hypoallergenic of all coated breeds. Second, Standard Poodles are elegant, energetic athletes who move with a light, springy gait. They excel in advanced obedience competition, where retrieving and jumping skills are required, and in agility obstacle course competitions, where they fly over and under and through the obstacles with a strength and grace that is breathtaking to watch. Even better, a good Standard Poodle is one of the smartest and most trainable of all breeds. He is a "thinking" dog who pays rapt attention to his owner, learns quickly, and responds eagerly to positive training methods. Indeed, Standard Poodles NEED some sort of mental stimulation in order to be happy -- advanced obedience classes not just basic , agility classes, or challenging games such as hide 'n seek, or fetching a variety of named toys. This intelligent breed cannot simply sit in the backyard and be ignored. Most Standard Poodles make great watchdogs and some even have mild and sensible protective instincts, but this is not an aggressive breed. Their attitude toward people varies from friendly to politely reserved. Early socialization is important to avoid excessive watchfulness or timidity. With other dogs and cats, Standard Poodles are usually peaceful and accepting. However, this breed is by no means perfect or low-maintenance. Besides the regular clipping every weeks , they need a good deal of daily exercise. Standard Poodles also need a lot of daily companionship. They suffer from loneliness and separation anxiety if left alone too much. Most Standard Poodles are "soft" and sensitive dogs, sometimes hypersensitive. If you touch them unexpectedly or startle them with a sudden loud sound, they tend to flinch. The most sensitive individuals are not good with small children. Similarly, Standard Poodles can get emotionally upset if there's too much activity or conflict or roughhousing in your household -- they prefer peace and harmony. You do have to watch your lines: some Standard Poodle lines are high-strung, nervous, even neurotic. If you want a dog who.Is medium to large, combining sturdiness and athleticism with elegance and grace Has a short curly coat that is virtually non-shedding poodles of any size are the best dog breed for people with allergies Comes in a variety of colors Is lively and playful Is one of the brightest and most attentive of all breeds, such a skilled reader of body language and expression, that he often appears telepathic Is easy to train and housebreak Is usually polite with strangers and sociable with other animals A Standard Poodle may be right for you. If you don't want to deal with.A careful search to avoid the high-strung lines Vigorous exercise requirements Exuberant jumping, romping, and bounding about, especially when young Skittishness in some lines, or when not socialized enough Emotional sensitivity to stress, tension, and loud voices Clipping the curly coat every six weeks Barking Serious potential health issues A Standard Poodle may not be right for you. With an adult dog, you can easily see what you're getting, and plenty of adult Standard Poodles have already proven themselves not to have negative characteristics. If you want a puppy, you can avoid some negative traits by choosing the right breeder and the right puppy. Keep in mind that the inheritance of temperament is less predictable than the inheritance of physical traits such as size or shedding. Temperament and behavior are also shaped by raising and training. If you like poodles but you have limited space in your home and yard, get a Miniature Poodle, not a Standard. Standard Poodles do differ, from dog to dog, in how much exercise they want and need. But to keep them fit and healthy, you should be able to provide a good-sized yard where they can run, and regular play sessions at the park. Some Standard Poodles want even more opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things; otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored, which they usually express by hyperactivity, barking, and destructive chewing. It makes me sad to see these extremely intelligent and capable dogs relegated to homes where the owner just wanted a casual pet. It's a waste of a brilliant breed. I strongly encourage you to get your Standard Poodle involved in advanced obedience classes and agility obstacle course classes at your local dog club. These dogs deserve it. Young Standard Poodles up to about two years old romp and jump with great vigor, and things can go flying, including small children and infirm people. Providing enough socialization. Standoffish by nature, Standard Poodles need early exposure to people and to unusual sights and sounds. Otherwise their natural caution can become skittishness or suspiciousness, which are difficult to live with. Emotional sensitivity. Be honest. Are people loud or emotional? Poodles are extremely sensitive to stress and can end up literally sick to their stomachs, with digestive upsets and neurotic behaviors, if the people in their home are having family problems. Poodles are peaceful, sensitive dogs who need a peaceful, harmonious home. To keep their curly coat short and free of mats, Standard Poodles require regular brushing, plus clipping every 4 to 6 weeks. Don't like the frou-frou look of most Poodles? Just clip him to look like a normal dog, with a short coat and no pompoms. Standard Poodles are alert dogs, which can make them quick to sound the alarm at every new sight and sound. You have to be equally quick to stop them so that it doesn't become an established habit. Serious health problems. Inbreeding is extremely high in Standard Poodles, which has led to a host of health problems becoming embedded in the gene pool. Standard Poodles are at risk for eye diseases, skin diseases, digestive diseases, immune system diseases, seizures, and more. Read more about Standard Poodle Health. It is approximately the same length as the height at the withers. The skull is moderately rounded with a slight but definite stop. It has a long, straight muzzle. The dark, oval-shaped eyes are set somewhat far apart and are black or brown. The ears hang close to the head and are long and flat. Both the front and back legs are in proportion with the size of the dog. The topline is level. The tail is set and carried high. It is sometimes docked to half its length or less to make the dog look more balanced. Dewclaws may be removed. The oval-shaped feet are rather small and the toes are arched. The coat is either curly or corded. While it does not make the written show standard, some breeders are breeding parti-colored Poodles. See grooming for different types of Poodle clips. Temperament The Standard Poodle is proud, graceful, noble, good-natured, enjoyable and cheerful. This highly intelligent dog is one of the most trainable breeds. Some can be trained to hunt. The Standard Poodle is generally lower energy and often calmer than the smaller varieties of Poodles, but will become high strung if you do not give it the proper amount and type of exercise. It is sensitive to the tone of one's voice and will not listen if it senses that it is stronger minded than its owner, however it will also not respond well to harsh discipline. Owners need to be calm, yet possess an air of natural authority. It are not the type of dog to live outside in a kennel, as it enjoys being with its owners and dislikes being alone. It is generally friendly toward strangers, and is excellent with children. The Standard Poodle is good with other dogs. Some can make good guard dogs. Make sure you are this dog's firm, consistent, confident pack leader , providing daily pack walks to avoid separation anxiety and other unwanted behavior issues. Height, Weight Height: 15 inches 38 cm or more. Weight: Males 45 - 70 pounds 20 - 32 kg Females 45 - 60 pounds 20 - 27 kg The sizes of the official AKC-recognized Poodle breeds are determined by height, not by weight. The Standard Poodle is over 15 inches at the highest point of the shoulders. Health Problems A long-lived breed, Poodles are, nevertheless, subject to many genetic diseases. Runny eyes, cataracts and progressive retinal atrophy, which may cause blindness. Hip dysplasia and ear infections are also common. They are prone to Von Willebrand's Disease. Brown Poodles tend to become prematurely gray. Prone to bloat , so it is wise to feed your Standard small meals a day, rather than one large one. Living Conditions If given enough exercise, Standard Poodles are relatively inactive indoors. They will be okay in an apartment if they are sufficiently exercised. A small yard will suffice. Exercise The Standard Poodle needs to be taken on a daily walk. Although they adore water and love to go for walks, Poodles are not demanding as far as exercise goes, so long as they get their walk in. They however, will keep in better spirits and be fitter if given regular opportunities to run and play off the leash in a safe area. The Standard retains its sporting instincts, has great stamina, and needs more activity than the smaller varieties. Life Expectancy About or more years Litter Size About puppies Grooming Extensive grooming is needed if the dog is to be shown. Poodles must be bathed regularly and clipped every six to eight weeks. Clean and check the ears frequently for wax or mites or infection and pull out hairs growing inside the ear canal. The teeth need regular scaling. Since the coat does not shed it needs to be clipped. There are several different types of Poodle clips. The most common for pet owners is an easy care clip called a "pet clip," "puppy clip" or "lamb clip," where the coat is cut short all over the body. Popular show clips are the English saddle and the Continental clip, where the rear half of the body is shaved, bracelets are left around the ankles, and pom-poms are left on the tails and hips. The AKC standard allows for a dog under a year old to be shown in a show-style puppy clip which has special requirements such as a pom-pom on the end of the tail. Other clip styles are the modified continental clip, town and country clip, kennel or utility clip, summer clip, and the Miami of bikini clip. Poodles shed little to no hair and are good for allergy sufferers. Origin The Poodle has been known throughout Western Europe for at least years and is depicted in 15th century paintings and in bas-reliefs from the 1st century. France has taken a claim on the origin, but the AKC gives the honor to Germany, where they say it was used as a water retrieval dog. Other claims have been Denmark, or the ancient Piedmont. What is certain is that the dog was a descendant of the now-extinct French Water Dog, the Barbet and possibly the Hungarian Water Hound. The name "Poodle" most likely came out of the German word "Pudel," which means "one who plays in water. They would leave hair on the leg joints to protect them from extreme cold and sharp reeds. The hunters in Germany and France used the Poodle as a gundog and as a retriever of waterfowl and to sniff out truffles laying underground in the woods. The French started using the breed as a circus performer because of the dog's high intelligence and trainability. The breed became very popular in France, which led to the common name "French Poodle," but the French people actually called the breed the "Caniche," meaning "duck dog. In the 18th century smaller poodles became popular with royal people. The three official sizes are the Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodle. They are considered one breed and are judged by the same written standard but with different size requirements. Some of the Poodle's talents include: retrieving, agility, watchdog, competitive obedience and performing tricks. Life Span Did You Know? Although the Poodle is the national dog of France, they actually originated in Germany over years ago where they were commonly used as a duck hunter. Their curly coat protected them from the elements and they were bred for their excellent swimming skills, high intelligence, and incredible retrieval skills. The Poodle comes in three sizes — Standard, Miniature, and Toy. Throughout history, this dog breed has served many purposes. From living in the lap of luxury as companions to nobility to working out in the field as a valuable hunting companion to entertaining people in circuses around the world, the Poodle is right at home. Although they are more popular as a companion dog, the Poodle still maintains their athleticism and working dog instincts. Poodles are known for their intelligence, cheerful disposition, and sensitive nature. They are versatile dogs that make great family companions. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. Due to their sensitive nature, they tend to be a better fit for older children who understand how to approach and interact with a dog appropriately. These dogs prefer peace and harmony in the household, so very young children that are too loud or rough can stress them out. The Standard Poodle also tends to be quite energetic until they are about two years old and may be prone to knock over small children in their excitement. Standard Poodles also tend to make great watchdogs and have some protective instincts. Without proper socialization, they can become skittish, nervous, and wary of strangers. Making sure any puppy is socialized early and often helps them grow into a confident, well-rounded dog. Standard Poodles are highly adaptable dogs. Their energy level tends to make them better-suited for larger homes with room for them to run. But, they can adapt well to apartment living as long as they receive the exercise, mental stimulation, and affection that they need. They tend to do well in most climates. As with most dog breeds, they are sensitive to very hot and very cold weather. These dogs are in-tune with their owners and thrive on human companionship and affection, so they do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. Poodles are a relatively healthy dog breed, but there are some potential health concerns to be aware of. Because of their larger, barrel-chested body type, the Standard Poodle is also at risk for bloat. Responsible breeders will screen and test their stock to ensure the genetic propensity for breed-related conditions is not passed along to the puppies. Poodles are highly intelligent, sensitive, and eager to please their owners. They are highly trainable, pick up things quickly, and are a good fit for owners of any experience level. Because they are sensitive and in-tune with their owners, they respond best to consistent, positive training techniques focused on rewards and praise. Poodle coats are curly or corded and come in a wide variety of colors. Although Poodles are known for their low-shedding, hypoallergenic coats, their coats still require a lot of maintenance. Keeping your Poodle in a short clip can help reduce daily maintenance, but still requires regular professional grooming every four to six weeks to maintain it. A longer coat requires daily brushing in order to prevent matting in addition to professional grooming every four to six weeks. Regular professional grooming often helps with this as nail trimming should be done monthly, at least, to keep nails from growing too long. Dental care for dogs , like brushing their teeth or using an enzyme toothpaste every day, is essential to protecting them from painful dental diseases like gum disease and tooth decay. You, your dog, and your groomer will thank you for it! Who knows? If you ensure these experiences stay positive, they could even become a bonding time that your dog enjoys. These are high energy dogs that require a good amount of exercise and mental stimulation every day in order to be happy and healthy. They love to stay busy and may enjoy running with you, going for a swim, taking trips to the dog park , hiking with you, and more. They also tend to be a good fit for several dog sports, such as agility, dock diving, obedience, flyball, tracking, and more. A fully-grown Standard Poodle usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs between pounds. They can be slightly smaller than the usual as the Standard size is denoted by being more than 15 inches tall at the shoulder. A Standard Poodle generally lives years. Some say they originated in France but it is far more likely that they come from Germany. Their intelligence and trainability also saw them co-opted into European circus troupes where they thrived — and it was in this capacity that the two smaller sizes of Poodles were developed. Their flamboyant haircuts were originally practical with the aim of clipping off all unwanted coat that would get waterlogged, but still keeping hair where needed to protect joints and keep internal organs warm. Ideal Owner The ideal Standard Poodle owner is someone who really enjoys walking, training and grooming. Standard Poodles fare best in homes that take part in dog sports the Standard Poodle is capable of them all, from Schutzhund to Heelwork to Music and everything in between or who enjoy training as a hobby rather than just a means to a well-behaved dog. A well exercised, well trained Standard Poo is easy to live with and a great companion for the whole family. Exercise Needs Standard Poodles take a great deal of exercise and want room to run. Expect an hour to two hours per day of walking and running, plus extra time to train or take part in dog sports and competition. Space Requirements Although the breed standard specifies a minimum height, in reality the Standard Poodle is now a fairly tall dog and takes up a reasonable amount of space. You will need dedicated space to bath and groom if you intend on keeping them in a full coat and grooming yourself. A secure garden with good, tall fencing is a must, ideally a flagged or paved yard as a wet lawn will be rapidly turned into a muddy racetrack! Town or country living will be fine as long as there are plenty of places to provide an interesting variety of walks and secure space to run off lead. Nutrition and Feeding Large breed dogs, as well as having large appetites, benefit from a different balance of nutrients including minerals and vitamins compared to smaller-breed dogs. Standard Poodles are also prone to bloating and stomach problems; smaller, more frequent meals can help minimise this risk. Grooming Poodle Standard Standard Poodles do not shed and are often though not always tolerated by allergic people. Their coats do take a great deal of care, though, generally requiring professional grooming, as well as regular combing and brushing at home. The poodle should be taken to a groomer about every six weeks to be clipped, or you can learn how to do it yourself and this can be as simple as a 'sheep' style clip. Home grooming the standard poodle in full coat will require some specialist equipment! They love to learn and perform, in fact they are a bit of a show-off, one reason they do so well in the show-ring. They also can excel at all the dog sports — and have a lot of fun doing them too although owners need a sense of humour as they can also be clownish! A bored Poodle means trouble, so aim to keep their minds occupied with a variety of training exercises, games and puzzle solving. The Standard Poodle is not hard to train, but you will need to be quick, engaging and fun to work with! Best Family Dog Breeds The Standard Poodle can make an excellent family pet, however the space, time and exercise requirements may mean this is not a suitable pet for a busy family with young children. With older children or teens who can help with training, walking and grooming however, they are a fun and active companion. While many dogs are traditionally thought of as being good with children, all dogs and children need to be taught to get on with and respect each other, and be safe together. Even so, dogs and young children should never be left alone together and adults should supervise all interactions between them. The coat is traditionally clipped into what may seem frivolous or silly shapes, but this was originally done to provide protection and buoyancy to some areas of the body whilst keeping other areas clear to free up movement and avoid matting. Poodle coats can also be twisted and rubbed into long skinny cords, giving the Poodle a very different look. Similar Breeds:.
