Nothing feels more comforting than that. Before you head to bed, take your puppy out for one last round of loo-going. Set your bedtime at a later time too — midnight sounds about right. Come back calmly, and place your puppy in the crate and turn out the light. Stuff you should know about Sleep Training your Labrador Your puppy will wake up several times in the night and will need the toilet at least once! Be prepared for not-so-deep sleeps and tired mornings — just for the first few weeks. Having them sleep next to you is only temporary. Consistency is key! As for you, full nights of sleep will start getting closer and closer. Alone Training How can I teach my Labrador puppy to be ok on their own? Start by feeding your puppy in their crate during meal times. If they seem worried by you leaving, stay in view, and just pop right outside their confinement area. Keep it short and sweet: No need to stay away for long, 60 seconds tops will do for now. Repeat: Do this at least once a day to make progress go steady and smoothly. Socialisation Exercises To Do this week Letting your Labrador puppy explore the garden Besides the gnomes and questionable garden furniture you may have, letting your puppy explore your own garden is a great and safe way to start showing them the sounds, lights and wonders of the outside world. Exploring different surfaces exercise Make sure that the surfaces you use are safe — nothing too crazy just yet. Gather surfaces such as An oven tray with a small layer of water A piece of astro turf A carpet tile A large piece of tin foil, cardboard or something crinkly PRO TIP: Set up for this exercise in the room your puppy spends most of their time in — it will help them to feel safe and confident. Pop the surfaces out safely on the floor and allow your puppy to investigate them. Nobody has ever enjoyed walking on those. Remember to be patient! Lucky for you — teaching them their name is easy peasy. Say their name in a happy jolly tone and reward with a treat. Repeat five times, 5 and take a break. Practice this 2 or 3 times a day so they get the hang of it. Teach your puppy to sit Teaching your puppy how to sit is a popular one. The first two are far more common though. How to do it Treats and a cheerful voice will be what works here. Do these exercises before meal times so your puppy is more motivated. Practice this 5 times a day and in 3 different places in your house and garden to get them used to coming to you in all settings. How to do it Show your puppy that you have their favourite toy, and start to get them excited about it. When they show interest, throw it a little bit away from you. They will likely follow it and pick it up. If they do, encourage them back to you with your voice, so remember to sound happy! Swap the toy for a treat or another toy and do the process again. Repeat this about 5 times. Instead create more distance and excitement sounds to get them to come to you — spaniels like to show off, so they will likely want to parade what they have! Always swap the toy for something when they have it, this could be a treat or another toy. Resource guarding occurs when we force puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. However, a healthy six-month-old labrador will grow significantly in size. Some of them can weigh up to 50 pounds. For a more balanced diet at six months, you can shift from feeding your puppy three smaller meals per day to two meals a day. To counteract this, you can drop the amount of food and gradually increase it. Setting Your Lab Puppy Up for Successful Potty Training Training an animal to control their bladders until you get outside is no different than potty-training for toddlers. In other words, crate training speeds up the potty-training process for your pet. Effective crate training depends on two things: Praising and rewarding your puppy for relieving itself outside. Over-exertion, especially for a puppy, is possible. This includes activities like playing fetch or tug and release. However, breeds that worked as a hunting companion for humans love to be active. Again, this goes back to the strengths of the breed. Keeping up with your puppy could be a task-and-a-half, so in the first months of life, you should be keeping them in your backyard or playing with them at home. As they become house trained and get all their vaccinations, you can turn walks into light jogs or runs if you want. In the long-term, exercise will help keep dogs healthy and disease-free. How to pet a Labrador Retriever Labs Have Unique Personalities Before getting into the details of what Labradors like or do not like when getting pet, it is essential to remember that all dogs are different. Just like people, Labs have unique personalities. Some dogs love to be in the middle of the action and get all the attention. Other dogs prefer to remain at a distance with minimal interaction. One dog may love to get hugged and snuggle on the sofa, while another dog may only tolerate a gentle pat on the head. Where do Labs Like to be Pet? With that said, there are some places where virtually all Labs love to get a pet or scratch. These include the upper chest, tail base, shoulders, and behind the ears. So, they appreciate a scratch from a helpful hand. Gently and slowly test them out on your dog while watching for the reaction. If you get a positive one, then keep going! Places to Avoid It is best to avoid the places on a dog where most Labs do not want a petting. These are places like the tail, paws, and legs. You petting it or holding on to it effectively mutes the dog. You petting them can make them feel insecure or vulnerable. While every dog has preferences, many Labradors love to cuddle and lounge on the sofa. Consider this bonding time for your lab. They want to spend time with pack members and show their love. Some dogs are happy to lay next to you and rest their head on your lap. Others want more and are pleased to accept full hugs. Finally, there are the ones you see on social media that act like humans! They cuddle up and spoon on the sofa or in bed with their human owners. Instead, come in from the side. This is a much less threatening approach. When petting your dog, use a soft and gentle touch. Move your hand in the direction that the hair grows. Long gentle strokes with the palm of your hand or fingertips work well. Avoid repeated patting, similar to what you see toddlers or small children do. Dogs universally do not appreciate this type of petting. Some tolerate it better than others. Never slap a dog. While you may think this is fun roughhousing, your Lab may feel like it is getting hit, not pet. Finally, keep your energy calm. This helps your pup stay calm and enjoy the experience. When crossing the English-creme Golden Retriever and the poodle, we create a hybrid with the calm and polite, laid back temperament of the English creme golden retriever, yet we increase the lifespan with the poodle. American golden retrievers have long legs and are very athletic, but the English cremes have shorter legs and are not as strong in agility. To be in the presence of an English-creme golden retriever, customers are often struck with their politeness and how very calm they are. We feel the English-doodles are the finest puppies coming out of our program based on temperament alone. An excellent choice for those seeking a therapy dog, or those that may have children with special needs. Organizations like Domesti-pups have chosen our dogs for training therapy dogs. Several of our puppies have gone on to receive their Therapy Dog Certifications. When choosing for color, choose the bernedoodle or classic American Goldendoodle. When choosing for temperament alone, choose the Englishdoodle. There is nothing wrong with the temperaments of the Bernedoodles or Goldendoodles, nor is there anything wrong with choosing a dog for color, but we simply believe the Englishdoodles are one step above the others in regards to temperament and this is often very evident during bath time as they seem to lay in the water and handle the stress of the forced air blow dryer. Sizes: We currently offer standard and miniature English-doodles. Our standards can sometimes take on a stocky-shorter build like the English-creme parent. They tend to be heavy set and dense. Standards can weigh between 65 and 80 pounds. Our miniatures are between 28 and 35 pounds. It is important to keep in mind that in any litter each pup can take after either parent. On selection day we like to compare the pups with each other, noting which ones are husky, stocky and have the retriever build. Also which ones are leaner and longer legged like the poodle. We specialize in comparing skeletal structures. We are now offering the F1s and the F1b's. The F1 choice will be fine for those with moderate to low allergy concerns. F1s are classified as minimal shed. If you have a family member with severe allergies, you may find the F1b type just what you're looking for. These coat types are considered a high maintenance coat type and regular grooming every 6 to 8 weeks is required. Coat colors that we offer: Creme, Champagne, Apricot. Of course the high intelligence of the poodle is also passed down in the cross. Retrievers naturally desire to eliminate in long grass and potty training should be relatively easy for these reasons. Health and Life-span: As the English-creme golden retriever has a short life span of 7 to 8 years and is prone to cancer, hip dysplasia and Ichthyosis, crossing them with a poodle provides the hybrid vigor and increases life expectancy to 12 years or more. Puppy mills kennel their many mother dogs and puppies for most of their lives. They re-sell their retired mothers for cheap prices, donate them to rescues, or even worse, euthanize them. Our mother dogs are pampered, and cared for with their loving families and live with no more than 1 other dog forever in the same home they were raised in. They are bred for only up to 4 times, and if they have no health issues. We are able to have many, happy dogs this way. No mother dogs are kept outdoors or in dirty, disease infected areas. In fact, they get more attention than most dogs because we hand select homes where the environment is extremely healthy emotionally and physically for a family dog. They have kids to play with, usually an adult home most of the day, sometimes another doggie playmate and of course, there are two families watching out for their health. They are groomed, exercised required , vetted, protected, and loved! Champion Lines Champion Lines means that there are close relatives of a dog that has achieved a Champion title in the show ring. We import our parent dog's lines, so they are from International Champion Lines. This is Ace for example. We raised Ace as a puppy and he now lives in Washington, DC with our sister, as a stud for our breeding program. He has 15 International Champions and 1 World Champion in his 5 generation pedigree. Several of his puppies are now grown and are currently in our Guardian Program having mini teddybear Goldendoodle puppies. She is such a wonderful example of a sweet, highly trainable mini Goldendoodle puppy. Trainability Blossom, one of our talented puppies has achieved "Trick Dog Champion. She also opens the refrigerator, gets you a drink of water and closes the fridge. She is a dock diving dog and a demo dog for a highly regarded trainer in Northern California. See her HERE. We breed our own lines of English Golden Retrievers and all of our future breeding dogs will be English Golden Retrievers. We partner with family members and choose from the very best puppies to introduce into our program. Our current American Golden Retriever mommas also have many of these characteristics. We chose them because out of the American lines, they have similar qualities. We look for blocky, mellow, and great health testing in our parent dogs. We found that most English Cream Golden Retrievers have all three of those qualities. Some American Golden Retrievers have all three, but they are hard to find. Their hip testing has significantly higher scores. The other genetic tests we do on our dogs are often much better with the English. Their temperament is the biggest difference that most people notice between the two types. They are much more mellow. We feel that because our puppies will be family and service dogs instead of hunting or agility dogs, we think that the mellow, laid back temperament of the English Golden will be best for our lines. English creams have a wonderful body style for Teddybear Goldendoodles. They are blocky and thick. This offsets the lean, athletic build of the poodle and perfectly compliments them. They are the parent dog for us! Our Puppies Our puppies are thoroughly and highly socialized. Our puppies are handled daily by children of all ages. Our Goldendoodle puppies are exposed to every household noise because they are raised in a home. They are in the dining room or living room areas so that they are close by all the daily activities in the home. This also gives everyone in the home convenient access to socialize them as part of family life. As they grow, we integrate outside playtime for the puppies part of the day, so that they learn the dog world as well as the people world. A few of our breeding females are active therapy dogs in facility settings. We have sold several diabetic alert dogs DADS and many to be trained for therapy and service. We work with local and national trainers to choose potential puppies. Golden Retrievers are known to be the all-around best family dogs in the world.
