Each litter typically produces adorably fluffy puppies, each of which may look different. Some will inherit heterochromia — or different colored eyes — from their Husky parent, while others will receive the longer snout of their German Shepherd parent. History: Emergence of the Gerberian Shepsky To understand this active and loving mixed breed, we must first understand purebred Huskys and German Shepherds. As we mentioned, the German Shepherd is known as a herding dog. They were developed in for herding and guarding sheep in Germany. The Husky is a working dog, first bred over years ago in Siberia. They arrived in Alaska in where they ran hard as sledding dogs and stole the hearts of locals with their goofy personalities. No formal records document the first hybrid litter of Gerberian Huskys. In general, the German Shepherd Husky Mix has an ideal temperament. They get their friendly, silly, and gentle qualities from the Husky side, while they receive loyalty and bravery from their Shepherd side. While Huskies never meet a stranger, shepherds are standoffish. The combination leads to a perfect balance. Once grown, your Gerberian Shepky will protect you, and guard your family from anything- all while providing love, cuddles and plenty of adorable moments to last a lifetime! They are great around children, and when socialized from a young age, can live well with other animals. The German Shepherd Husky mixed breed is incredibly intelligent will learn quickly when trained appropriately. Huskies can be stubborn and become bored easily, while the German Shepherd loves to learn new things and have a job to do. If your puppy is more Husky, he may prefer hours of running, rather than mental stimulation. For example, hold out a toy or treat and let your pup catch a whiff. Then, hide the object and let your pup sniff it out. Get creative with your training and bond with your puppy to find what works for you! Be sure to keep your Gerberian Shepsky well exercised and mentally stimulated to avoid developing unwanted negative behaviors like barking, howling a husky favorite , and chewing. Calorie requirements differ based on age, weight, activity level, and sex. For example, a quickly growing puppy requires more calories than an adult Shepsky and should eat food specifically formulated for puppies. In contrast, active adult German Shepherd Husky mixes require about calories, while less active and senior dogs only require calories per day. A high quality food, formulated for large breeds is best. Remember to account for special treats in daily caloric needs! Get the whole family together for a walk or run. Continuously switch up the route so your Shepsky never gets bored. Other recommendations include providing at least 2 hours a day of moderate to vigorous physical activity. German Shepherd Husky mixes do best in an environment where they can play, run, and roam. Your new pet will be most content when able to participate in interactive activities like obstacle courses and challenging puzzles. With lots of love and attention, your Gerberian Shepsky will settle into a nice routine of work and play. Be sure to snuggle up for plenty of cuddles at the end of a long day! Shepsky Health Considerations Like their purebred parents, German Shepherd Husky mixes may suffer from certain health issues due to their genes. When you purchase a puppy, your breeder should be happy to provide a detailed health screening of the parents. Joint Dysplasia causes the elbows and hips to develop abnormally, leading to pain and eventual loss of movement if left untreated. If caught early, the condition can be treated successfully with medication or corrective surgery. Cataracts, inherited from the Husky parent, are issues with the lens of the eye that will lead to decreased vision over time. If left untreated, your Gerberian Shepsky may become disoriented, confused, and even aggressive as he loses his ability to process his surroundings. Again, if caught early, this disease can be treated with medication or surgery. This condition causes the stomach to swell and twist around it self. The risk is passed on to your Shepsky and great care must be taken to avoid it! Simply remain attentive to how much and how often your pup is eating and you should be safe. And, much like a wolf, the Shepsky mix possesses a strong snout and piercing eyes. They may even have two different colored eyes! Puppies with heterochromia are highly coveted and will cost more. But they are worth it — so gorgeous and unique! Just like the eyes, Gerberian Shepsky coats may be a variety of colors based on which parent they most closely resemble. Common colors include white, gray, silver, tan, red, and the classic German Shepherd coat color — Sable! Because the Husky originated as a sled dog, their coats are adapted for the cold climates of Siberia and Alaska. However, they are double coated and may shed one coat to accommodate warm temperatures. Your Shepsky will also have a double coat that requires twice weekly brushing sessions to promote proper shedding and skin health. Additionally, frequent full bathes are harmful to your German Sherpherd Husky mixes natural oils. This can lead to irritation and dry, itchy skin. Instead, only bath them when necessary with a gentle shampoo. Simply spot clean in between with a damp cloth, and use a non-toxic deodorizing spray if necessary! We've included some summary facts and stats below to help you make your decision. Do you think this gorgeous, regal looking dog is right for your family? Yet, cuddly, friendly, and adorable! So what do you think? So, it is safe to say that these dogs are built to be active but also need to be around people or other dogs in order to be satisfied with their lives. They also have high exercise requirements! One of the most common complaints about the Gerberian Shepskys is that they are barkers. This makes them not-so-popular with the neighbors. You should ideally begin when your puppy is still young. You can read it here. Moving on… The German Shepherd Husky Mix is known to be a chewer and to have a powerful jaw which, if not channeled correctly, could mean the demise of your furniture. PetDT was founded by Jacquelyn Kennedy, a dog lover and pet admirer. She built the website to provide pet owners with information, experiences, and opinions on breeds, temperament, personalities, health, nutrition, products, and care. A beautiful tri-color, looked a lot like the canines in the pictures above. Someone had set her over the fence of the play yard at shelter one night or early morning before anyone was there. Never could figure why. Shelter thought they did it to avoid surrender fee. Since the shelter had no records of her the vets could only guess her age which they figured somewhere between years old when we met her. Sadly I recently had to put her down do to some health issues. She, Niki was the best dog I have ever been around let alone had in my life. Beautiful with a wonderful smile. So happy to be with whoever. Everyone made over her and commented what a nice dog. Niki liked to lay around and took all the loving, hugs and kisses we gave her. Very patience and gentle. Hardly ever barked. Never growled or showed her teeth at or to anyone. Not one mean bone in her body. Receptive to everyone, little kids hugging her around the neck to strangers petting her wherever. She was on the small size for this breed, 50 pounds. When we went for walks she was not interested in other dogs although many of them barked to get her attention. Just a beautiful kind loving friend GOD placed in our lives and us in hers. Before you choose the first food that you find, think about the following. That way, you can make sure your dog gets the nutrients they need. Protein-Rich Food Your dog needs quite a lot of protein to support its bones, muscles, and joints. If your dog is more active, it could use more protein. They still need a good amount of it, though. High Fat Content Another essential nutrient for dogs is fat. Some foods have a higher fat content, which should be okay except for some dogs with more sensitive stomachs. It can also help maintain the health of the skin under the coat — this is especially important if your dog has a thick undercoat like many Huskies. The Right Carbohydrates Dogs also need a good amount of carbohydrates. Many dogs can eat grains, like oats or rice, and some do well eating foods with wheat. Plenty of Vitamins Your dog also needs vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Vitamins C and E are particularly useful since they can help reduce inflammation and oxidative damage, respectively. The fatty acids are easy to get in foods with fish as the main protein, but other formulas should have it. Food Flavor Another thing to look for is the right flavor of dog food. Some dogs will eat anything, so it may not matter what you buy. However, other dogs can be quite picky, so they may only eat one or two unique flavors. This can take some trial and error. Consider buying small bags of a few different foods and seeing which one your dog will eat, if any. You can also try different flavors of the same food to find something that works. Package Size You should also consider how much you can afford to spend on dog food at a time and the number of dogs you have. If you only have one dog, you can get away with a smaller bag. But if you have more than one German Shepherd Husky, you have to consider your options. On the one hand, you can get a smaller bag and pay less each time. It has all of the nutrients your dog needs without any fillers. Be sure you buy a bag so that your dog can try it. What type of dog food is best for my Shepsky? German Shepherd x Siberian Husky mixes are very active dogs. They need sufficient protein and carbs as well as vitamins and minerals. How much should I feed my Shepsky? If they finish the serving and seem hungry, you can add a little more. Huskies tend to stop eating when they are full, unlike many other dogs. We have partnered with Chewy. Very little is known about where and when it originated. Many dog experts claim that the first of this kind was bred intentionally sometime in the late s. Originally, a German Shepherd and a Siberian Husky parents were mated to produce a first-rate working dog, since both the parents are excellent working dogs. Soon, because of their sheer strength and quick intellect, they were used to assist with search-and-rescue operations and took military and police roles. It would help to get a glimpse of the origin of the parent breeds to have a better understanding of German Shepherd Husky mix. The German Shepherd , which originated in in Germany, were used to herd sheep and pull heavy loads under tough conditions. They were imported and used as sled dogs during the Alaskan Gold Rush. The breed eventually became popular throughout Canada and the United States as great pets. The Siberian Husky is believed to have originated over two millennia ago from the Siberian Arctic. At what age is a Poodle fully grown? Poodles are considered fully grown adults at two years old and tend to show emotional signs of maturity, like a calmer nature, around 18 months. At a year old, most Poodles will have reached their final height or very close to it. However, most Poodles will require a full two years to fill out their chest and reach their final weight. Image Source: Pexels How big should a 6-month-old Poodle be? A six-month-old male Poodle will weigh around 41 to 48 pounds, while a six-month-old female Poodle will weigh about 28 to 34 pounds. Both male and female Poodles at this age stand at around 18 to 22 inches tall, which for some Poodles is already their full adult height. Pro Tip: Check out this ultimate pet parent guide with 39 dog care tips on pet first aid kits, puppy-proofing practices, training, veterinary appointments, and more! How much bigger will my Poodle get? There are a few ways to assess how much bigger your Poodle will get. The first is age. If your Poodle is less than a year old, they still have significant growth left! If your Poodle is between one and two years old, they are likely still filling out a bit, but are probably at their adult height. Do they still look oversized next to their legs and body? If this is the case, they are probably still filling out as this is a classic puppy feature! A Poodle puppy will rarely grow larger than their bigger parent, so this will also give you an idea of their maximum size. What is the size of a full-grown Poodle? According to the American Kennel Club Official Poodle Standards , an adult male Poodle is 60 to 70 pounds while an adult female Poodle weighs between 40 and 50 pounds. By these standards, full-grown Poodles will be over 15 inches tall when measuring from the ground to the highest point of their shoulders while standing. Most Standard Poodles will stand between 18 and 24 inches tall. Smart lifestyle choices are essential in keeping your Poodle happy and healthy. The Veterinary Centers of America recommend a long walk, jog, or intense play to fulfill their daily exercise needs. Poodles were bred as retrievers and, as such, are keen on games involving retrieving like fetch. Many Poodles also enjoy swimming. Due to their full coats, Poodles can put on excess weight without their pet parents realizing it. Poodles are not overly prone to weight issues with a balanced diet, but their coat can disguise weight changes. Their full coats also require regular upkeep like brushing and combing every other day, professional grooming every six weeks or so, and watching for potential eye problems. Poodles are prone to weeping eyes and eye irritation from lashes or hair, so keeping their eye area free of long hair is ideal. As a purebred dog breed, Poodles are more susceptible to genetic health problems. Many of these genetic health problems can be screened for early on using DNA technology. These early screenings can help you and your veterinarian prevent and minimize health complications from these genetic diseases. A bove all else, regular veterinary care is the best way to make sure your Poodle stays healthy. Between health screenings, regular veterinary care, bloodwork, x-rays , dental cleanings , and more, your veterinarian is your best resource in caring for your precious Poodle puppy. Be aware, vet visits can quickly become expensive - especially when immediate treatment or surgery is needed for an emergency or illness. With many treatments and surgeries costing thousands of dollars, this can quickly put pet parents in a pinch should the worst happen to their pet. Poodles are larger dogs, which can also increase the price of treatment. This is where pet insurance comes in. Pet insurance reimburses you for out-of-pocket veterinary costs and provides a safety net should the worst happen to your Poodle. As purebred dogs, Poodles are more prone to genetic health problems, like bloat or hip dysplasia, which can quickly become expensive to treat. He can even begin house-training and start becoming used to being groomed. He is ready to leave his mother and littermates to go home with you, fully capable of taking his place in the family. The following list will help you know what to expect from your puppy has he develops. Most puppies will gain or grow rapidly between birth and 6 months of age. How much they grow or gain will depend on their breed, diet, and ultimate adult size. Growth is generally steady until they attain their adult size. You need to build trust with your puppy. Don't ignore crying but address the cause for the crying with attention and care. Touch is the first sense a dog develops and remains a powerfully important sense throughout his life. The entire body, including the paws, is covered with touch-sensitive nerve endings. Although they can see and hear, their sense of vision and hearing is quietly maturing. They are also developing their general sense of smell. This means you will need to take them out at least every 3 hours to get them "housebroken". A general rule of thumb for how long puppies can hold their bladders: one hour for every month of age, plus one. So if a puppy is two months old, he can wait up to three hours. Although capable of learning, they have a very short attention span. Keep a variety of simple toys for your puppy to investigate. He will also play rough and tumble with his littermates and will gradually begin learning to play by himself. It is extremely important that puppies socialize with people at this age. Include lots of people of varying ages, sizes and shapes to interact positively with your pup. Some puppies have a brief phase of "fear" at this time as they may respond to noises or new objects. Expose your puppy to new objects and allow them to investigate on their own terms until they are comfortable with the new situation. After all, most puppies just learned to walk at 3 weeks of age and run at 5 weeks of age, which was just a few short weeks ago. They are developing their gross motor skills that help them to run, play, and "hunt". Their fine motor skills will come later. Puppies also learn to jump up at this stage. This is a normal behavior that can turn into an undesirable behavior when the puppy reaches adult-hood and jumps on every visitor. You can begin correcting your puppy and giving him positive reinforcement for good behavior. Get your puppy used to the brush and comb by gently using them on him for very short sessions that are kept positive. Don't hold your puppy down to be brushed or combed if he does not want to be. Their muzzle is getting longer but overall they have the characteristics of a puppy. The ears may begin to stand up in some breeds. The rest is spent eating, playing and eliminating. Their body temperature at birth is around 94 — 97 degrees. They are not able to regulate their own body temperature so they depend on their mother for warmth. They also cannot see or hear or eliminate on their own. They cannot walk. About all they can do is smell, suckle and crawl. They are totally dependent on their mother and the environment the first 2 to 3 weeks. They are mostly influenced by their mother and litter-mates during this period. We weigh the puppies everyday the first 2 to 3 weeks. Week Two: Poodle Puppies usually open their eyes around 8 to 10 days and their ears around 13 to 17 days. While sleeping all healthy and contented puppies will twitch. This is an activated sleep, characterized by muscle twitches. This is normal and healthy. Week Three: During the third week we will often see teeth start to erupt and the puppies will start to stand and walk around. Everyday is amazing to see these helpless puppies start to become independent. At this age their nervous system is more developed so that they can urinate and defecate by themselves. This is when the puppies will also start to play a little bit more with their litter-mates. This week is very important in the puppies emotional development. They will start not only the interaction with their litter-mates but also with their mother. We never start the weaning process during this week. While mother may come out of the whelping box during this week she will never be far. Week Four: At this age the puppies will be introduced to our own homemade puppy mush and their supplement which will help grow their immune systems. Puppies are born without an immune system and depends on their mother to supply this protection through her milk. Their body temperature will usually be around degree and they will be able to begin regulating their own body temperature. Every day they will eat more and more. The puppies will start to eat more food and move around more easily. They may even start to chase each other, bark, and bite. We still weigh them at least every other day if not every day. This is the time that the mother starts leaving the puppies at longer intervals of time and start to regulate their nursing. So this is a good time for us to introduce the puppies to the weaning box and start the weaning and potty box training. Week Five: Puppies start to establish some sort of dominance in the pack. Growth and development is rapid in this week. They become very aware of their surroundings and respond quickly to training. They begin to growl, play, challenge, and learn disciple from their mother. They also develop a bit of a competitive spirit. Training ability is developed and puppies are ready to begin learning. They also start to discover their toys and play with them more. Keeping them stimulated is important. Puppies can start to control their need to potty and now know they need to move away from the sleeping area. Good experience with people from week 5 — 7 will play a large roll in how they will continue to interact. Week Six: By this time it is amazing to see that little puppy wake up and walk over to the potty box to eliminate. Puppies enter their socialization period by the end of the third week. However, the most critical period — age six to eight weeks — is when puppies most easily learn to accept others as part of their family pack. The integrating of the human family is so important and will effect them for the rest of their life. The puppy brain waves look of an adult dog by about the 50th day, but he is not yet programmed — that is the job of the human trainer, and the job of his mom, siblings and other canine family members. This is when the fun begins for all humans and puppies. We know how important this time is for puppy to adjust to humans and how playtime stimulates their little brains to grow smart and wise. We introduce them to the outside. We bring in more interactive toys. We introduce them to the pool, weather permitting. If outside pool is out we use the grooming bath for water play. They also learn not to bite the human hand ever! It is at the 7th week, day 49, that we conduct the Volhard Test. This is actual one of several that will occur through its life. Instead of meeting new or familiar people and objects with curiosity puppies start to react with fearfulness. Anything that frightens them at this age may have a lasting impact. So take care that the baby is not overstimulated with to many changes or challenges at one time. This does not mean that your puppy will grow up to be a scared-y-cat; it is simply a normal part of development where puppies learn to be more cautious. Careful socialization during this period helps counter fear reactions. Because your puppy is actively working on social skills and is paying attention to both litter-mates and humans. Your puppy is learning at an extremely fast rate. This is why we will NOT hold any puppy beyond the 9th weeks. All puppies that cannot be picked up during puppy pickup week must enter their puppy into a training program. Weeks Thirteen — Sixteen: During this phase a puppy will attempt to challenge you for dominance. Here is where they test to see just how much they can get away with and test your level of tolerance. The more a puppy is allowed to get way with during this phase, may cause the dog to lose more and more respect for his owner. This may result in behavioral issues that can snowball if not corrected through training and obedience. Formal obedience should begin here. This will assist the dog in becoming the best he can be. This is the time your puppy will begin to understand and use ranking in terms of submission and dominance. Are you the owner going to be a good pack leader? Puppies will need to be taught what they can and cannot chew. Puppies need to be taught that it is never acceptable behavior to jump on a human, small or big. This is the time that the pack leader, the human in charge, especially needs to be confident, but firm with positive reinforcement. An obedient dog, a good canine citizen, is a pleasure to be with. A disobedient dog causes stress for all and can cause damage to things and other humans. What do I mean by that? The canine depends on a human, however, he is and his thinking is canine. He needs the human to communicate and set the standards for him. If the human does not then the dog will have no choice but set his own standards, doggy style. Be prepared to be a Good, very good, pack leader! Your puppy now understands that he has a pack which may consist of both humans and canine and his behavior will be most influenced by this group. You can expect your dog to challenge you more as he explores dominance and his role in the pack. Rather they are just working out what their rank is in the pack and what is expected of them in their position. Again: be a Good, very good, pack leader! Canines that are not spayed or neutered will also start exhibiting sexual behavior during this period. Be responsible and spay or neuter you canine. Some puppy owners hire a canine trainer to come to their home to teach them how to train. Some owners learn ahead of time what they need to do and immediately begin their puppy on this program. Still others have their puppy enter into our training program. We have much information on the website about training. And for our puppy buyer we are here whenever they need any coaching along the way. Be Consistent, Persistent and always have a Routine! Category : Puppies When you take your puppy home usually around weeks of age they will need to eat 3 or 4 times a day. At 8 weeks old we feed small meals 4 times a day at 7 am, 11 am, 2 pm and then at 5 pm. We allow them free access to water until 7 pm in the evening. An alternative is to feed 3 times a day at 7 am, 12 noon and at 5 pm. If your puppy is hungry split the meals to 4 times a day. By the time they are 10 weeks old they can go to 3 meals a day. If your puppy feels thin you can feel all the ribs and backbone easily increase the amount of food. If your puppy feels fat you should be able to feel some of the ribs reduce the amount of food. Some puppies are very active and burn up every calorie they eat, some are prone to being a little rounder and their food intake needs to be carefully monitored. Research has shown that dogs that are not overfeed have a much lower risk of developing hip dysplasia. Keep your puppy thin and healthy. We do not recommend free feeding of puppies as this makes it more difficult to housebreak your poodle and regulate their diet. Better to move to free feeding after housebreaking if you choose to. It is harder to monitor how much food they eat when free feeding and a glutunous puppy may quickly become fat. Remember a thin puppy is less likely to develop hip dysplasia. We strongly encourage you to keep your puppy on the same food we provide for the first month. Both coccidia and giardia may live in the gut of a healthy poodle and they never have an outbreak. When their bodies are stressed they are more likely to develop an unhealthy balance and the result may be a sick puppy. Moving to a new home, leaving their Mother and siblings and diet changes are all stressful. We encourage you to make as few changes as possible to your puppies diet the first month. Changing to a different dog food — go slowly. It may take a month or longer to switch foods. If at any point your puppy develops an upset stomach go back to the level of food mix that they were doing well on. Should your puppy develop bloody diarrhea take them to the veterinarian, they have most likely developed gastroenteritis and may need some medication or possibly fluids. Go slowly, new protein sources require time for the stomach to adjust. This is true not only in puppies but also adults. We continue to feed our puppies 3 meals a day until they are 6 months old. Our belief is that in keeping food moving through the puppy it allows for better consistent growth and health. At 6 months of age we start to feed 2 times a day with snacks throughout the day. We continue to feed our dogs 2 times a day throughout their life. We feed snacks several times a day to both puppies and adults which may be carrots, green beans, eggs or chicken or pieces of their kibble. We feed our poodles both kibble and home cooked food. Bully sticks are given occasionally for chewing. No Comments.
What We Do Is the Boxer breed right for your family? Information about the Boxer to help you decide if this is the best breed for your family. The Boxer breed is so easy to fall in love with.My love for the breed started roughly 24 years ago when I saw the most beautiful boxer, a flashy fawn. From that moment I began to research the breed and find out all of the information that I could. Number one on my list was "are they good with children".I stopped and greeted every boxer I ran across, asked a million questions, spent countless hours reading books and online, enjoyed playing with numerous boxers, and visited a breeder.I knew I had a few years before we would be ready for a new addition but I wanted to make sure we were prepared and making the right decision for our family. The lack of reputable boxer breeders to mentor under was alarming. Showing, working, and training was always my dream as a child. Raising young children and showing dogs aren't the easiest combination so I continued to focus on more research within the breed. We have been actively showing in conformation now for nearly 8 years and have loved every minute. We strive to raise happy healthy AKC registered Boxers with great structure, conformation, wonderful temperments, nice heads, tight coats and early socialization. Our Boxers are raised in our home under our feet not in a kennel or basement away from the family, we breed for a purpose to improve our lines and not just because! Labradoodle generations can seem like a complicated topic. If you are hoping to add a puppy to your family you have probably already wondered what size dog you would like, what breed, whether you should get a male or female. And, if you have decided on a Labradoodle, now you have to wrap your mind around generations? So, knowing the most about your potential puppy will help you determine if it is a good match. This article will help clear up the mystery and give you a better understanding of your furry best friend! Why Do Labradoodle Generations Matter? It is all about the DNA! Generation refers to the ancestry of a dog, which influences both physical characteristics and temperament. Genetics also play a role in potential health issues your Labradoodle may be at risk for. Although responsible breeding can reduce the risk of some health issues, there is never a guarantee. This simple step can protect you from sudden and often expensive heath issues that require veterinary care. I recommend Healthy Paws as they offer one of the most affordable policies that also offers extensive coverage. Click here to get an instant, online pet insurance quote from Healthy Paws! Labeling Labradoodle Generations Understanding the terminology used when labeling generations is key. Every Labradoodle generation begins with the letter F. What does the number mean? The number is the generation of the dog. So, 1 is first generation, 2 is 2nd generation, 3 is 3rd generation, etc. Sometimes you will see a B at the end of the generation. This indicates a backcross. Typically this means that the Labradoodle was bred back to a purebred Poodle. There may be times when they are backcrossed to a Labrador Retriever, but as this is very uncommon, this article will only use B to refer to a breeding back to a Poodle. Labradoodle Generations Chart This table provides another helpful reference as you learn even more about Labradoodle generations. Do remember that the DNA percentages here are theoretical estimates. What is an F1 Labradoodle? It is a first generation cross of a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle. This first generation has a large, diverse DNA pool. They can have the shorter, coarser coat of the Labrador Retriever, the curly coat of the Poodle, or something in between! While an F1 Labradoodle will likely shed less than the average Labrador Retriever, there is a high likelihood that they will shed at least a little. Keep in mind that even this moderate shedding can trigger some allergies. If you need an allergy-friendly dog, the F1 Labradoodle is usually not the best generation to choose. The upside to genetic diversity is that it lowers the risk of genetic health issues common in purebreds. Mixed breeds in general are at a lower risk of genetic diseases. F1 Labradoodle Price This generation is usually the least expensive. Prices will vary widely depending on breeder reputation, location, size and color. You should expect to pay more if you want a Toy or Mini Labradoodle. F1 Labradoodles are the most frequent generation found in rescues and shelters across the country , so you may be able to save a bit of money by adopting. Photo courtesy of rosie. What is an F1B Labradoodle? Well, we know that F1 means a first generation Labrador Retriever and Poodle cross. So, an F1B would be a first generation Labradoodle crossed back with a Poodle. As mentioned earlier it could mean the Labradoodle was bred back to a Labrador Retriever, but this is not common. By backcrossing to the Poodle, the F1B Labradoodle will lose some of its genetic diversity. However, the advantage to backcrossing is a more predictable coat. For allergy sufferers who are seeking a lower-shedding dog that is more likely to be hypoallergenic, the F1B Labradoodle is a safer choice. You should expect to pay more if you want a Mini or Toy Labradoodle rather than a Standard Labradoodle. Photo courtesy of dooditsalbus on Instagram. What is an F1BB Labradoodle? So, this is a litter bred with an F1B Labradoodle parent and a purebred Poodle parent. This generation is a great pick for allergy sufferers. While there is never a guarantee that a Labradoodle will be hypoallergenic or non-shedding, the more Poodle DNA, the higher the chances it will be. Because the F1BB Labradoodle is so close genetically to a Poodle, there will be less genetic diversity. F1BB Labradoodles will likely have more traits typical to Poodles. This includes both appearance and personality. While this more predictable coat is better for allergy sufferers, it also can be higher-maintenance and will need regular brushing to maintain it. Owners of this generation will especially want to invest in a quality brush like the Chris Christensen Big G Slicker Brush. Prices will vary widely depending on location, the reputation of the breeder, color, and size. Photo courtesy of smalltowndoods on Instagram. What is an F2 Labradoodle? The simple answer is a second generation Labradoodle, but it can get a bit more confusing than that! F2 Labradoodles are not super common. One reason for this is when you breed dogs with such a vast DNA pool, it is nearly impossible to predict the traits that will be passed on to the puppies. Often there are puppies in an F2 Labradoodle litter that are closer to a Labrador Retriever in personality and appearance. If allergies are not a concern, the F2 may be a good generation for you, especially if you prefer Labrador Retriever traits. F2 Labradoodle Price This generation is often less expensive in comparison because of the unpredictability of their traits. Prices will vary widely depending on factors like color, size, location, and the reputation of the breeder. Photo courtesy of the. What is an F2B Labradoodle? This is a breeding of a second generation Labradoodle to a purebred Poodle. So, an F2 Labradoodle is backcrossed which adds a B to the generation label to a Poodle. While the traits of an F2 Labradoodle tend to be fairly unpredictable, backcrossing it with the Poodle results in a bit more consistency. This will increase the chance of the puppies having a more allergy-friendly coat with less or no shedding. It also means that this generation is likely to have a curlier coat, which is higher maintenance. Like the F1B generation, this is a good choice for allergy sufferers. Some breeders may refer to this generation as a Multigen Labradoodle. This label may be applied to any Labradoodle beyond an F2. If you are looking for a Toy or Mini Labradoodle, expect a price towards the higher end of that range. What is an F2BB Labradoodle? In other words, this means an F2B Labradoodle is bred to a purebred Poodle. This generation can also be referred to as a Multigen Labradoodle more on that later! This makes the F2BB Labradoodle a great choice for people wanting a low-shedding, allergy-friendly dog, as those traits are highly likely, though not guaranteed. Photo courtesy of toff. What is an F3 Labradoodle? It is a third generation Labradoodle, also referred to as a Multigen Labradoodle. Like the F2 generation, the F3 Labradoodle does not offer consistency or predictable traits. So, if you need a specific type of coat, the F3 Labradoodle would not be a good choice. F3 Labradoodle Price F3 Labradoodles are rare, but also not one of the generations with a super high demand. As such, prices can vary widely. What is a Multigen Labradoodle? Also referred to as a Multigenerational Labradoodle, this refers to any Labradoodle that is greater than an F2 generation. If you find a litter of Multigen Labradoodles, the breeder should be able to tell you the specific generation. Whether your future dog falls on the higher or lower end of that range depends on location, breeder, size, color, and other factors. Which is better, the F1 vs F1B Labradoodle? This is all a matter of perspective! If you have fallen in love with that classic Labradoodle appearance, then an F1 might be your top choice. The genetic diversity of the F1 also offers a lower chance of genetic health issues from popping up down the road. If allergies are a concern, the F1B is by far a safer bet. Since this generation is closer genetically to a Poodle, it will greatly increase the odds that your puppy will inherit the non-shedding and hypoallergenic coat. F1 Labradoodles tend to be easier to breed and offer more predictable puppies than F2 Labradoodles. So, the quick answer to the F1 vs F2 Labradoodle question is that the F1 generation is usually a better choice. They can sometimes be a bit less expensive that F1 Labradoodles. Being backcrosses with purebred Poodles, they both offer fairly predictable traits, making them both good choices for allergy sufferers. More important than the specific generation you choose is the breeder. A responsible breeder will do extensive genetic testing to make sure they are limiting the risk of health concerns. Do your research on the breeder, talk to past puppy owners, and compare prices. These factors should be far more influential in your puppy selection than the slight difference between these two generations. What Generation Labradoodle is Best? After all, they may be a bit biased! To determine what generation Labradoodle is best for your family, you need to factor in allergies, shedding, appearance, cost, health, and personality. This will help you maximize the potential that your dog will be low or non-shedding. It also offers the greatest genetic diversity and a comparatively low price. Overall, finding a responsible breeder is just as important as which Labradoodle generation you choose. A good breeder will match up parents and do genetic testing to maximize the chance for healthy puppies. Pair good breeding practices with great pet insurance and you will be on your way to having a long, happy life with your Labradoodle puppy. If you are not sure which generation your Labradoodle is, in most cases your breeder should be able to let you know. However, if you have lost touch with your breeder or you adopted your Labradoodle through a rescue, how can you find out? Many Doodle owners have had success with this simple to use product. Labradoodle with curly coat sitting on the grass. As a result, their appearance tends to favor the Poodle side. Typically, this generation will have a wavy or curly coat. This curly hair traps dandruff and fur close to their skin rather than scattering it around your house, so they are a low to medium-shedding breed. The color of their coat is dependent on their parents. Labrador Retrievers were originally bred as working dogs that live to please. Poodles, meanwhile, are a famously clever breed. A hybrid of these two results in a breed that is affectionate, energetic, and intelligent. Their intelligence makes them easy to train, even for first-time dog owners! However, their energy can be overwhelming if you are unprepared. If properly socialized, they make great family dogs that love playing with children and other pets. Here are a few distinctive points: These three stylish Labradoodles help to demonstrate the curly coat type. They still have furnishings and could be trimmed to Teddy bear like Wavy coat but notice the loose Poodle curls on the chest of the middle dog. Extremely low shedding. Some might display more Labrador characteristics, such as a shorter straight-haired coat. An F2b heavily favors Poodle DNA and has a higher likelihood of displaying curly hair, which will significantly reduce shedding. F1b Labradoodle vs F2b Labradoodle There are few significant differences between these two generations of Labradoodle. An F1b will actually have a higher percentage of Poodle DNA than an F2b, which means that their coat may be curlier and shed less. This makes their appearance, coat-type, and temperant more consistent and predictable. They will likely have curlier hair and shed less than an F2. Like all dogs, F2b generation Labradoodles require loving, care and attention on top of regular vet visits to maintain their peak physical and mental health. Can Labradoodles smile? Nutrition These are active dogs that require a balanced diet to support the amount of energy they expend running and playing. Their daily intake will depend on their size, age, and activity level. Kibble made with natural ingredients is always better than heavily processed foods filled with additives and preservatives. They benefit from foods high in proteins and whole grains to give them energy and vitamins to support their bones, joints, and organ function. Exercise When I say these are active dogs, I mean it! They require multiple spirited walks throughout the day to burn through their energy. They make wonderful jogging or workout partners but benefit just as much from a good game of fetch or playtime with children or other dogs. This is also a very intelligent breed that requires mental stimulation on top of the physical. Supply them with puzzles or toys that require a task in order to get a reward in order to keep their minds active and healthy. While their hair might not end up around your house, they still shed dander. The curly or wavy hair traps dandruff and shedding close to the skin. If left unattended, this can cause painful knots, clumps, rashes, and infections. So, the curlier the coat, the easier your house is to maintain—but the more attentive you have to be to your dog! Brush your dog weekly to ensure that you remove stray hairs and debris, or take them to a professional groomer to trim unruly hairs and prevent painful clumps and knots. If you have a minor dog allergy, there are a few workarounds so you can still enjoy the company of this lovable fuzzy friend! Ask someone without a dog allergy to help brush your dog in your home, or get your dog professionally groomed at a salon regularly. Hybrid breeds benefit from hybrid vigor , making them generally healthier and hardier than both purebred Labradors and Poodles. However, they are not completely immune to all complications. Irresponsible breeding and negligence can increase the likelihood and severity of these conditions. Carefully research your breeder before buying and do your best to maintain a healthy lifestyle for your dog at home! A recently shaven Labradoodle named Max rests on the floor in a holiday home. Conclusions F2b Labradoodles are second-generation Labradoodles that have been backcrossed with a purebred Poodle. These dogs tend to favor Poodles in both appearance and personality. They tend to have curlier hair and shed less than other Labradoodle variations. Like all Labradoodles, these dogs are active, intelligent, social, and friendly. They benefit from vigorous physical activity, mental stimulation, and loving attention. If properly trained and cared for, they make for loyal and affectionate additions to your family. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. These letters and numbers represent different generations, which can significantly impact what your puppy will be like as an adult. Understanding Labradoodle Genetics You probably know that a Labradoodle is not a purebred breed but the result of crossing a Labrador Retriever and a Poodle. What is an F1 Labradoodle? An f1 Labradoodle is a cross between a purebred Labrador Retriever and a purebred Poodle. The number tells you how many generations removed a puppy is from his nearest purebred ancestor. It means the appearance and temperament can be inherited from either breed, which can be pretty unpredictable. Some puppies will take after the Lab, others will be more like the Poodle, or they could be a mix of both. What is an F2 Labradoodle? An f2 Labradoodle is a second-generation dog, meaning both parents were f1 Labradoodles. What is an F1b Labradoodle? It means a purebred Labrador or Poodle was backcrossed with a first generation or f1 Labradoodle. But there are no guarantees. What is an F2b Labradoodle? An f2b Labradoodle is the result of an f2 Labradoodle backcrossed with a purebred Poodle. Typically, an f2b Labradoodle will have a wavy or curly low-shedding coat, one of the main reasons Doodle dogs are so popular. Labradors are generally 21 to 25 inches in height, but there are three varieties of Poodle: Standard, Miniature, and Toy, and the type will impact the size of the puppies. Is the F2b Labradoodle Hypoallergenic? Although often touted as hypoallergenic or non-shedding dogs, their curls trap loose hairs against the skin instead of leaving them around the house. However, since the f2b Labradoodle will shed less than most other dogs, you may find they generate fewer symptoms. If you suffer from dog allergies, the best thing you can do is spend some time around the dog at the breeders. Allergies have more to do with the individual dog than the breed type. F2b Labradoodle Temperament Like appearance, temperament will be affected by qualities inherited from their parents. Both the Labrador and the Poodle are known to be highly intelligent, active, and good-natured breeds with similar backgrounds in water-retrieving. Their working history and keen intelligence make the f2b Labradoodle receptive to training, and their friendly nature means they get along well in homes with other pets and children. However, these energetic dogs need early socialization and plenty of attention to know how to behave in any environment. Do your research and ask for health clearance documentation, as irresponsible breeding can increase the risk of health problems. Are F2b Labradoodles Good Pets? An f2b Labradoodle will typically have the teddy bear looks and curly, low-shedding coat that people find so desirable. Although there can be some variance depending on the parents, because these dogs have been backcrossed to a Poodle, they are more likely to have predictable traits than earlier generations. As the offspring of two very smart, friendly dogs, f2b Labradoodles make ideal pets for many people. Adult dogs need at least an hour of proper exercise every day. The f2b Labradoodle coat will also require regular grooming to avoid matting. These dogs are very social, curious, and eager to please. They require plenty of social interaction to be happy. F2b Labradoodle Choosing an F2b Labradoodle instead of an earlier generation means the dog is likelier to have predictable traits. Although bringing one into your life may require extra effort, these intelligent, sweet, outgoing, and adorable mixed-breed dogs are more than worth it. Learn More About Labradoodles. Breeders of this type of Labradoodle often hope to achieve a more Poodle-like coat than some f1 or f2 Labradoodles might have. This way, potential owners that suffer from dog allergies will be better off. Generally, an f2b Labradoodle will have wavy or curly fur. They will need regular grooming, and will often be low to moderate shedders. The curlier their coat, the more fur and dander will get trapped rather than shedding around your home. Are you ready to find out if the f2b Labradoodle will suit your household? What is an f2b Labradoodle? There are a few common ways that breeders will get f2b Labradoodle puppies. Either they will breed an f1 Labradoodle with an f1b Labradoodle, they will breed an f2 Labradoodle with a purebred Poodle, or they may even mix two f1b Labradoodles together. This is all great if you are familiar with the terms being used. This simply refers to the offspring of mixed breed dogs, so f1 means first generation, f2 means second generation, and so on. In Labradoodles, this most often means that a Labradoodle has been bred back with a purebred Poodle, in the hopes of increasing the likelihood of certain Poodle traits. F2b Labradoodles will have a higher percentage of Poodle DNA, which will increase their chances of inheriting things like the Poodle coat. The amount of curl they have can still vary. Some may just have a slight wave, whilst others might have a very tight curl, or even corded fur. Color will also vary depending on the influence of their specific parents. The size of an f2b Labradoodle will also depend on that of their parents. Generally, they will fall somewhere between the two. So, if your f2b Doodle is from two parents that are very similar in size, chances are that your puppy will grow to the same sort of height and build. Make sure you know which type of Poodle is being backcrossed to — ie. Miniature, Toy, or Standard, as this can impact the size of your Doodle puppy. Both the Labrador Retriever and Poodle breeds are originally working dogs that specialized in water-based retrieving alongside their humans. There is some modern variation, such as in working and show bred strains of each breed. But, generally, you can expect their offspring to be intelligent, social, and very energetic. Breeders can also choose to breed certain traits into personality. For instance, some breeders may try to breed the most social dogs together, or those that were fastest to learn obedience, in order to produce puppies with the same traits. But, this is something to discuss with your breeder, if you need a Labradoodle for a certain working purpose. Generally, f2b Labradoodles will be friendly, clever, and playful dogs. Particularly if you have socialized them properly from a young age. They can get along well in homes with other pets and even with young children, but remember that they can be quite energetic and can grow quite large. Are f2b Labradoodles Hypoallergenic? The term hypoallergenic can be quite misleading. All dogs have the allergens that can trigger an allergic reaction, but rather than in their fur, the allergens are found in their dander, saliva, and even urine. So why does a dog like the Poodle tend to trigger allergies less than a Lab? Poodle fur is low shedding. And, the very tight curls or cords of their fur will catch any saliva-coated hair ir dander that does shed. This will trap the allergens in their coat, which can form painful knots and increase grooming needs, but will lower the amount of allergens around your home. F2b Labradoodles are more likely to inherit Poodle traits, like tightly curled fur and low shedding coats. So, an f2b Labradoodle might not trigger your allergies so much, and may be better than a Labradoodle with more Labrador DNA. However, because curly fur will trap dander and fur that sheds, you will still need to come into contact with it when grooming, and Poodle fur needs much more grooming than straight fur. Not all dogs will trigger allergies, even dogs of the same breed. Another tip is to let someone else in the house, someone without allergies, do the grooming. An f2b Doodle has been backcrossed to a Poodle, but an f2 Doodle has not. This means they often express more Poodle traits in their appearance and temperament. In contract, an f1 Doodle has two purebred parents. It is a first generation mix. So, it will have equal amounts of Labrador and Poodle influence. This means that f1 Labradoodles can look very different from one another — even those from the same litter. And, they are much more likely to have the high shedding double coat of the Labrador. Is an f2b Labradoodle Right for Me? An f2b Labradoodle will usually have a low shedding coat, with curly or wavy fur. Their exact appearance will vary a little, depending on the traits that they inherit from their parents. So, owners of any Doodle must be prepared to offer them plenty of opportunities for exercise and mental stimulation every single day. They can also grow to be quite large dogs, so basic obedience training is a must. As well as proper socialization from a young age. Finding f2b Labradoodle Puppies Most breeders will list the Labradoodle generations they offer on their websites. Or, they will be able to tell you in person more about their Doodle puppies. Ask plenty of questions, take a look at where the mother dog and puppies are being kept, and make sure to see evidence of health testing. Since Labradoodles and mixed breeds in general are very trendy at the moment, puppy mills, pet stores and backyard breeders are common. Puppies from puppy farms and backyard breeders may be more likely to experience health and behavioral issues as a result of poor breeding and care. A reputable breeder may charge slightly more, but the cost will be worth it in the long run. Do You Have an f2b Labradoodle Puppy? If you have a second generation backcross Doodle at home, we would love to hear your experiences! What traits has your puppy inherited? Do they tend to trigger allergies in any of your family that have them? Let us know in the comments. References and Resources. I went to meet Mike to talk about an upcoming litter and Bailey was sitting by herself. I pretty much changed my mind and wanted her immediately. She was introduced to a 6 year old cocker spaniel with and IVDD condition and they became best friends. Great Temperament, Incredibly smart and absolutely beautiful addition to my family. Mike has been following up since I got her checking to see if I had any issues. His training packet was detailed and if you follow the crate training and feeding regiment you will have no problems. Angelica I brought home an F2 labradoodle from here. My pups has already learned several commands within a few weeks of having him. The breeder has plenty of space for the pups and you can tell that there is a lot of care put into the environment. My dog has a great temperament and deals with people well. Upon the first meeting my pups was excited to greet people you can tell he had been socialized well. Mike does well with communication and answers any questions. Highly recommended! Javier Sanchez Got my black lab from Mike trained. He is very good and is comfortable with a crate, walking and great temperament. Overall an awesome dog from a great breeder! Maura Eaton My 12 year old son did all the research on Mike and his company. He had 5 star reviews across the board. Once we saw the picture of Zoey, a Chocolate Labradoodle, we knew we had to meet her. Mike's business is clean, the dogs are all loved by him and well trained. Zoey was Stage 1 trained. This is my first dog as an adult and Mike was excellent in providing advice and recommendations. After we adopted Zoey, Mike would periodically check-in on how Zoey was adjusting to her new family and home. As you can see in the pictures, she is very happy. Mike knew her personality well - smart, sweet and social. A perfect fit and addition to our family. He worked on training with the puppy before we brought him home, which was a big help in the adjustment! I would recommend Mike to anyone looking for a labradoodle puppy. Our puppy has been the best addition to our family and we have enjoyed working with Mike. John Schmadeke We were looking for a labradoodle puppy from a reputable and experienced breeder. Mike was super helpful, and we really appreciated that he cared so much about things like genetics and DNA testing for the dogs. Mike has always been available to answer our questions and to give advice. Tom Riniker We found Mike to be very professional, knowledgeable, and helpful when we purchased a puppy from him. His kennels are clean and organized, and his puppies are well cared for. He really loves his career and it shows! He has followed up with us on numerous occasions regarding the health and well-being of our puppy, and I always know I can reach him if I have questions. Thanks for everything, Mike! Yunhua Chen I have bought a stage 2 F1 labradoodle from Mike. His name is Zen, and just like his name, he is a well-behaved and well-trained little man. He only cried about 15 - 30 minutes during the first few nights and later he was sound asleep. I highly recommend Mike as a breeder because not only he deeply cares about the dogs, but also he has the expertise to make the dog the perfect match for you. Michelle Balchunas Mike was absolutely wonderful to deal with and very helpful with adding a new puppy to our family. If you are looking for a lab to add to your family we would highly recommend working with Mike. Charles Arnold Mike was a great help with our new puppy, Archie. Great experience… and a great dog. Junie is gentle, kind and very loving. She's also extremely athletic and smart. Working with Mike was a very smooth process and his "dog siting" service has proved helpful as I do travel on occasion. Having someone I could trust to care for Junie is super helpful. Mike James I recently had the fortunate privilege of working with Mike to find my next pup. For multiple reasons, the breed is perfect for me - the temperament, lifestyle often on the water , and hypoallergenic fits a tough lifestyle. I without hesitation recommend you work with Mike if you are looking for an amazing pup and great support network. Charlie is so gentle. He was just outside getting petted by his fan club, the neighbors. He licks. I got him the week of July 4th he was outside during that noise. He looks at noise. One of his other puppies was the same way, gentle. Day one he knew the trail through the woods back to our house. Charlie is a beautiful Chocolate lab with the softest hair. I got him at 16 weeks. You have no idea how helpful that is. Of course you want a healthy dog. Took the shots like a champ. The Vet remarked how firm his joints were. Yes he lets you brush his teeth! He goes to the door when he has to go. Another reason I wanted a 16 week pup. Peanut butter to continue gentle licks on my fingers. He always gets small chicken or liver for COME. You should see him come. Is Charlie gentle because some hunting dogs have a gentle mouth or is he gentle because Mike treated him right? Oh do exactly as Mike says on the take home instructions, he knows his dogs! Highly recommend! We brought our pup home with all the documentation of his superior genetics. Mike also sends several handouts which help prepare you for puppy ownership and ensure a smooth transition for your pup to his new home! In addition to his exceptional breeding he is exceptionally well-trained. We opted for a stage 2 puppy and not only does he sit, lay down, stay, he has an incredibly calm demeanor and his additional exposure to other dogs was also incredible. He is so well-tempered and well-behaved due to his additional training. We are so happy and in love with our sweet boy! Brent Viditz-Ward We were looking for a chocolate lab puppy for a long time from a reputable breeder and our experience with Mike was wonderful. He took time to get to know us and make sure that the dog was going to a good home and is always available to answer questions, give advice, etc. I highly recommend Mike and his puppies! M Fowkes Mike is a fantastic breeder. We got an F1 puppy from Mike. She is a sweet beautiful girl. Before she was born Mike knew what the puppies would look like generally, and was really easy to communicate with. He is very responsive when I had a lot of questions. He is like that even now that my puppy is 4 months old…available to answer questions and be supportive. Josie Palma-Aurelio We stumbled on this website when we were looking for our next fur baby. All the reviews speak truthful about Mike. He calls us to check on Nala for updates and gives us pointers on how to take care of her. Nala is such a lovable puppy and we are so happy to have her. We highly recommend! Juan Tellez Mike was a great helping my family and puppy get adjusted to our home. You can tell Mike has a lot of dedication and love towards his dogs. Snoop has been a great addition to our family! We are first time pet owners and Mike handheld us through the entire adoption process. His reference material, responsiveness and his genuine care for the puppies has helped us navigate the critical period of 12 weeks smoothly. The puppy is super smart outwitted me in a game of hide n seek when he was 10 weeks old! He is a bundle of joy! We are first time pet owners and had a lot of questions! He is always enthusiastic in answering any questions we have and supporting us before and after getting the pup! He cares about his dogs and pups and it shows in the research he has done and the knowledge he has about them! He has a lot of information on his website about the breed, food, toys and snacks! He also gives a couple of handouts when we book a pup with him and some when we take them home! Those helped a lot in the preparation for our pup! When you take them home, he also gives you details about the breed, vaccination records, and DNA testing done for the litter! Our girl, Shuri, is very energetic and curious! She does really well when we train her and has already learnt so much! For anyone looking for a labradoodle, Mike is the best! Jocelyn I highly recommend Mike. We are first time dog owners and he made the process so easy for us. Our labradoodle has made an excellent addition to our family!

Like many large breeds, a German Shepherd dog is not considered fully grown until they are about 18 months old. Female German Shepherds continue to fill out until they are around two years old, while the male German Shepherd growth rate continues until they reach two and a half years of age. Males are larger and require more time to fill out their chest and abdomen. As you can see by the German Shepherd weight chart, these dogs can continue to grow until they are three years old, but the majority of growth occurs within 24 months. If your GSD is older than 36 months and continues to put on weight, contact your veterinarian to ensure weight gain does not lead to obesity. How big should a 6-month-old German Shepherd be? A six-month-old German Shepherd puppy will be quite large, as many German Shepherds undergo massive growth spurts between two and five months old. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. How much bigger will my German Shepherd get? There are a few ways to gauge how much bigger a German Shepherd will get. First, check your puppy's age. If your GSD is younger than two years old, they definitely have room to keep growing! Another way to tell if your pup still has a lot of growing to do is their paw size. Do their paws look large compared to their legs and body? This is a classic adolescent feature of a dog and means your pup is likely still growing! Most of the time, a dog will not grow bigger than its larger parents. What is the size of a full-grown German shepherd? An adult male German Shepherd is typically 24 to 26 inches tall, while adult female German Shepherds are 22 to 24 inches tall, according to the American Kennel Club German Shepherd Standard. The estimated full-size varies significantly between sexes. In terms of weight, an adult male German Shepherd weighs anywhere from 75 to 90 pounds. A female German Shepherd weighs notably less at 55 to 70 pounds. Please keep in mind that these numbers are only estimates to give you an idea of how much bigger a German Shepherd puppy may get. Height: 26 inches Ratio: .This should give you their height. For example, 26 inches times 0. Using the other example, .Since each dog is going to be different, you need to look at their overall body condition rather than a weight range. Fortunately, there are body conditioning charts that you can use to figure out if your German Shepherd is at their ideal weight. Just look at them from the side and from above, feeling for ribs and pelvic bones when necessary. Younger dogs will also typically be on the thin side before they fully fill out as adults. Years of line breeding has produced several distinct types of Shepherds. Show dogs are known for a sloped back in which the back legs are shorter than the front. This unnatural formation can cause back and hip problems along with an abnormal gait. German Shepherds bred for show will also be thinner than their hardworking cousins. As you can see in this picture, this is a show-bred German Shepherd with an obvious curved back and short back legs. Working dogs, on the other hand, are bred for a sturdy, straight back so they can work long hours without getting sore. They tend to be thicker than show dogs and will, therefore, weigh more, even at the same height. As you can see in this picture, this dog has a straighter back and longer back legs, so it has been bred for working. Something else I wanted to mention here is that, according to some sources, Black German Shepherds are larger than their bi-colored cousins, despite being otherwise the same. So, if you have one of these rare and beautiful creatures, you can follow the same charts that were listed above. If your German Shepherd is diagnosed by a veterinarian as underweight or overweight for their age, then the first thing you should do is ask him or her to help you figure out the underlying cause of the problem. This will determine what should be done next. Do you have a giant German Shepherd? What about a tiny one? Comment below to tell us more about it! About Alexandra Animalso I was raised to be a dog person. My first Shepherd grew up as I did and wanted to be where I was at all times. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. American German shepherds have straighter backs then German shepherds. If you have a german shepherd and their lineages are close to their German roots they will have that arch in their back. How about some details regarding their feeding habits, behavior, medical needs, grooming regimen, and exercise requirements? In this section, you will find everything you need to know to keep them healthy and assist with things such as toilet training and teething. She will discipline them and make sure they learn to be independent. They then begin to go to the toilet independently and venture away from mom. At week 8, they play, can be housebroken, and bark when startled. The famous GSD ears will start to stand up, and you can begin leash and crate training. They must be handled and groomed and realize that human commands and dominance are the norm. During this time, the mother will nurse the pups until they are old enough to begin eating puppy mush , which is softened kibble. Allow puppies to eat as much as they like at each meal. At 6—8 weeks, their first shot from the vet is due. Smith, Shutterstock 12 weeks is a turning point for your pup. Their coordination will come on in bounds, as will their learning and social skills. They will be eager to learn but easily distracted, so have plenty of patience. If you become angry, it will stunt development if they become fearful of you. Your pup is officially into the juvenile period now. All of his puppy teeth should be developed by now and are normally very sharp. So, beware of your fingers when playing. At 12 weeks of age, puppies can start to eat three to four set meals a day with measured amounts. Purpose-made dog-approved chew toys are best, not teddy bears or old shoes. As they grow through this period between three and six months, GSD puppies are more juvenile than babies. They will be more boisterous and energetic. But on the plus side will feed easily, be more friendly with animals and people alike, and more than likely be housetrained if you have managed them correctly. They will be stubborn at this age when training and could ignore you, or not come when called. The best approach is to ignore any sassy attitude and only praise and fuss when back to being obedient. His internal organs and systems are fully developed and functioning as they should, while the skeleton is still growing. His full set of adult teeth should be present and correct. Your GSD is now becoming independent and will want to roam different areas and interact with their world on many more levels. Be aware that they could weigh 50 lbs at 6 months, so caution is needed with control and safety as they explore. He may also seemingly forget commands that he has been taught. It is best to ignore, not mollycoddle, any fearful reactions to new things to not reinforce the negative behaviors. By 6 months of age, you can reduce the feedings to three per day, now paying attention to the total calories consumed. Between the ages of 4—6 months, he will shed his puppy coat too. He might still be a bit goofy, gangly, and stubborn when it comes to training. German Shepherd females are reaching sexual maturity at this age. They may have their first estrus heat period. So, be mindful of letting them off the lead during this time if other dogs are around. At 9 months, your GSD can be tested for heartworm and treated if needs be. Speak with your vet about this for more detail. You can add small amounts of solid adult formula into the puppy food to get him used to the texture. Making it the optimal time to stimulate them as much as you can with obedience training and work activities. Your GSD should be comfortable in all situations, and with all types of company as their bond with humans should be well established. Their unique personality and quirks should be apparent and set them apart as your dog. They will have developed vocal and body language traits that you recognize and use for their needs. If male, he will be reaching sexual maturity and cocking his leg when urinating. He might also be looking to challenge dogs and humans for the title of pack leader. The key to cementing all your hard work so far is to be consistently firm with any boundaries he tries to push. By 12 months, they should be on adult formula only. German Shepherds stop growing between 2 and 3 years. This is when they fill out too. It starts to slow at around the age of 1, but he will continue to grow until he reaches maturity. During this time, they are considered to be adolescents. This is the same for their mental maturity too. This is the same for all German Shepherd types. Females tend to mature faster, both physically and mentally, than male German Shepherds. There are different stages within this time frame before maturity. And these are the neonatal stage 1—2 weeks , the transitional stage 2—4 weeks , the socialization stage 4 weeks to 3 months , the juvenile stage 3—6 months , and the adolescent stage 6 months to 2 years. Research has shown that neutering dogs can affect their growth. But how exactly? But early indications show that early neutering can increase the length of time that the bone grows. Meaning potentially taller dogs. But this also poses questions about whether this affects the joint alignment and whether it can cause any problems. And for the German Shepherd breed and his heightened propensity for hip dysplasia, this is a concern to be aware of. But waiting for full skeletal maturity also poses risks. Because neutering for females can reduce mammary cancer. If spayed before her first heat, it can eliminate the chances of this type of cancer altogether. As they will be able to offer you tailored advice for your German Shepherd. Dangers of Growing Too Quickly or Stunted Growth The dangers of growing too fast can affect their skeletal development. Conditions caused by growing too quickly are joint dysplasia and osteochondrosis. By feeding him a kibble that is designed for large-breed puppies will help control the rate at which his bones grow. This is because they have the optimum ratio of calcium and phosphorus levels in the food. So, always feed him large-breed puppy food during his developmental stage. This is most common in German Shepherds, but also in some Labrador Retrievers. It is an inherited disorder of growth hormone deficiency, and it will make the affected pooch always appear puppy-like. Growth Distinctions of Different German Shepherds. Frequently Asked Questions German Shepherds German Shepherd Dogs are one of the most popular breeds and are my absolute favorite breed. That's why I've had five in total, three boys and two girls. From their loyal and obedient personalities to their beautiful coats and markings, they bring joy to many homes, including mine. With impressive intelligence, these puppies are easy to train and make excellent companion animals. The German shepherd is a large breed, usually weighing between pounds for males and up to 75 pounds for females. Their coats require minimal grooming but will benefit from occasional brushing. German shepherds are very active dogs who love to run around; they need plenty of exercise to stay physically and mentally healthy. They also enjoy activities such as agility training or nose work games where they can use their smarts! Factors Influencing Weight But what about their size? German shepherds can vary in size based on gender, age, nutrition, and because of their breeding. For example, a German working line shepherd is much more energetic than the more laid-back American show line dog. A puppy from working lines may weigh less than the average on the charts. Be sure to consider factors such as gender and environment when monitoring your pup's development. A good rule of thumb is that by eight weeks of age, a German Shepherd puppy should weigh between pounds, depending on the genetic factors mentioned above. By six months, most male puppies will weigh between 49lbs — 57lbs with an average weight of 53lbs, and a female will weigh between 44lbs — 49lbs with an average weight of 46lbs. For this reason, when consulting a weight chart for a German shepherd puppy, it's essential to understand the breed, lineage, and pedigree of the dog, as well as the sex of the dog. Our puppy weight charts are specific to German Shepherd Dogs and consider all these factors. It's an excellent tool for monitoring your pup's growth and health. These charts show the average expected weight range for male and female German shepherds at different ages, from puppies to adults. Knowing the expected range can help ensure your pup grows normally and stays within healthy boundaries. By six months, a male German Shepherd will weigh 53 pounds on average, whereas a female will weigh about 46 pounds. Our chart differs from others in that you can track your puppy's weight based on his actual weight at a point in time. Many other weight charts are either for non-specific breeds, or if they are specific to a German Shepherd, they only give you the averages and a range. While this is all useful and included in our charts, what is missing from many others is what weight your puppy will likely be based on his actual weight now. Most people bring their new puppy home at 8 weeks old 2 months. The range for a female German Shepherd puppy at that age is between lbs. As you already know your puppy's weight, you can estimate how much they are likely to weigh when older using our chart. For example, if your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old. To estimate how much they are likely to weigh at 6 months old, you would find that weight on the chart and follow it down to the 6-month-old row and see that she would most likely weigh 46lbs by the time she is 6 months old and 68lbs when fully grown. Of course, these are just estimates, and all puppies grow at different speeds, as will yours. Another way this chart is helpful is if, using the same example, your puppy weighs 14 lbs at 8 weeks old and then jumps to 49 lbs at 6 months old, instead of the predicted 46 lbs. In that situation, you would follow that new column down and see that she is now closer to weighing 70 lbs when fully grown. They are heavier-boned, more muscular, and have deeper chests. If you know what you're looking for, you can distinguish a male from a female German shepherd by looking at their heads, as a male is larger and have a more masculine look. Using the German Shepherd Puppy Weight Charts To use this chart, find your pup's current weight along the top and go down the left side of the chart to find his age. If he is in range, you can follow that column down to see what he will likely weigh at each age milestone. For example, if your male German Shepherd puppy weighs 18 lbs at 8 weeks old, then you would find the nearest weight at that age on the chart. In this case, it's .In this instance, he would weigh approximately .Under no circumstances should you try to adjust your dog's diet or exercise to fit in with the chart; it is merely a guide. German Shepherd Weight Chart for Female Puppies Female German shepherds, on the whole, have a much narrower head and nose and have an overall feminine look, especially around the eyes. If you know what you're looking for, you can guess whether they are male or female by looking at their face. Having said that, my girl, Ava, was very tall for a female and was often mistaken for a boy, even when she was wearing her pink collar and leash! But I still think her face was much more feminine than her brother Hudson's. This breed of dog has unique growth development. During the first three months of their life, a German Shepherd's body goes through a significant growth spurt. Typically, they can double their birth weight in the first week! At 12 weeks, you can expect your pup to weigh about pounds for a male and pounds for a female. This growth spurt will continue through five months old; by the time they're six months, you'll likely have a large, goofy puppy on your hands. After that initial growth period is over, you'll find that your German shepherd will gain weight slowly from then on out until it reaches its full adult size at around two or three years old. On average, female German Shepherds reach an adult weight of pounds, while males reach pounds. German Shepherd Puppy Height Chart German shepherds come in a range of sizes, some taller than others. It can be helpful to know the different heights of German shepherds to ensure that the one you choose fits your lifestyle and needs. When looking at a German shepherd height chart, it's essential to remember that males tend to be larger than females. Depending on where they were bred, most standard-sized male adults will stand between inches, while female adult German shepherds typically reach inches in height from paw to shoulder. Below is our height chart for German shepherd puppies you can use to estimate your puppy's height at each age milestone based on his starting or current height. It also includes the average percentage of adult height reached each age milestone. If your puppy's weight is outside the guidelines, it may be less of an issue than you think. Puppy weights can vary greatly depending on breed, genetics, and other factors included on this page. While ensuring your puppy receives proper nutrition and exercise is essential, several factors can influence their weight. One way to determine your puppy's adult weight is to check with your breeder. They can make an educated guess as to what your furry friend will weigh once they reach adulthood. A reputable breeder should have a good understanding of their dog's genetics and be able to provide insight into the typical size range of their litter. This information can give you a rough estimate of what weight you can expect for your German shepherd as they grow older. Another factor to consider when determining the adult weight of your pup is their parents' size, and again the breeder can give you much more information on this. You can also speak with your veterinarian about your puppy's overall health and development, and they may be able to provide some insight into their expected adult size. It's important to avoid becoming too fixated on your puppy's weight if they fall outside the standard guidelines. Don't worry if your puppy is a little bigger or smaller than listed here, and if you still want to determine their adult weight, you can also use the puppy weight chart for a large or giant breed dog here. Conclusion In conclusion,German Shepherds are a fantastic breed of dogs, and understanding their growth and development is essential for pet owners. Knowing the average weight and height of male and female German Shepherds can help you be better prepared for your new pup's growth. With the proper diet, exercise, and vet care, your German shepherd will be healthy and happy throughout their life. Keep in mind that these charts are only a general guide — every pup is different! How your dog is fed and exercised will play a part. In this article we will look at the height and weight of GSDs at different stages of their development. And at what you might expect your cute German Shepherd puppy to measure and weigh when they are a full grown German Shepherd Dog. German Shepherds are the third most popular dog in the USA right now, having been recently nudged down a place by the French Bulldog. The breed belongs to the Pastoral group of dogs traditionally used as herding dogs. Some shepherd breeds were also used to guard livestock. German Shepherd Dog size is linked to this important role. The German Shepherd temperament is also tied in with this purpose and has made them uniquely suited to work as a service dog. With the right training, German Shepherd dogs also make excellent family pets. Working German Shepherd Size Because of their dual purpose as both herding and guard dogs, they are one of the larger shepherd dog breeds. He also turned to refining them into good police and guard dogs, creating a very versatile breed still in demand as herding became less common. German dog breeds became unpopular during the second world war and lovers of the breed began referring to them as the Alsatian dog, to protect their dogs from anti-German sentiment. They are easily trained, so they make good show and work dogs. Specifically with weight and growth rate. Being overweight can be harmful to German Shepherd health, just as it can to other breeds. Black German Shepherd puppies weigh the same as pups of other colors Weight issues in adult dogs is not the only area of concern, GSDs are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which has been linked in some cases to overly rapid growth in puppies. They also suffer fromosteochondritis dissecans, disorders of the pancreas, panosteitis causing lameness, eye and ear issues, and allergies. And are vulnerable to bloat. In addition, some GSDs have deeply sloping backs and angulation in the legs that may be causing health issues. By about a week of age, they will weigh 1. This is one of the reasons why large breed-specific dog foods exist: to control the growth of these dogs in a way that will maximize their health and minimize joint problems. But up to 3 or 4lbs either side of that is normal. At this age most puppies are settled in with their new families and are on three meals a day. At this age pups can look quite gawky and skinny. German Shepherd puppies generally stop growing significantly in height by nine months for males, eight months for females. Males may get an extra inch by 15 months and females slightly less than that by months. They reach their adult weight at 36 months. The answer is no, not really, though it is possible to harm your dog by overfeeding either as a puppy or an adult. German Shepherd dogs will no longer grow in height after 36 months of age, or three years. Dog individuals vary, just like human individuals do. You can ask your vet for a weigh in and a check up to discuss any concerns Average German Shepherd Height On average, male German shepherds reach a larger size when adult than females. So your girl German Shepherd is likely to be a little smaller than her brothers when she is full grown. The German Shepherd breed standard specifies that a good height for adult male German Shepherds is inches at the withers. For females, a size of inches at the withers is about right. Share Pugs have been bred to have unnaturally shortened airways Image: PA THE Netherlands banned the breeding of flat-faced dogs nearly a decade ago to address the cruelty of producing animals with exaggerated features that cause severe health problems. The country now looks primed to ban keeping flat-faced dogs, such as pugs and English bulldogs, too, and I hope Scotland will lead the way in the UK by following suit. Centuries of inbreeding for certain physical characteristics have resulted in breathing-impaired breeds BIB. Greedy breeders have created deformities such as flat faces and short noses to satisfy arbitrary trends — as though dogs were bonsai trees to be contorted into shapes that please us. On the sofa to my right sat a pug named Eva and her guardian, Aimee Vivian. Rather, I was debating the perpetuation of these breeds, which are prone to suffering from innumerable chronic health issues. Because they have been bred to have unnaturally shortened airways, many BIBs cannot run around or chase a ball without gasping for air. They often require invasive surgery to unblock their airways, a risky procedure that brings with it great expense. BIBs are among the most abandoned breeds, in part because guardians are unable to afford their hefty veterinary bills. Too often, we hear stories of dogs abandoned and left to die, such as the French bulldog found outside a shop in Paisley last year. Yet breeders continue to churn out puppies for profit while an estimated 20, dogs are euthanised in shelters every year. We simply do not need to bring more dogs into this world that is already bursting at the seams with homeless animals — and certainly not ones who struggle to breathe. Some say Scotland leads the UK when it comes to animal welfare legislation. Now that the Dutch government has acknowledged the cruelty to animals inherent in breeding for exaggerated physical features, Scotland has an opportunity to follow suit by extending our compassion to breathing-impaired dogs whose lives are severely impaired simply because they have been bred for a certain look. Johnny Behavior 0Comments Is your Frenchie feeling a bit under the weather? Pet parents can find it hard to believe that their pup is not in the mood for a walk in the park or a quick game of fetch. Your Frenchie will be sad sometimes — no doubt there. But what if this sadness starts looking like depression? That means that they can experience feelings of sadness and depression a bit differently. Even more so, dogs can sense your energy. So, if you notice that your Frenchie is not in the best place right now, try not to project any more anxious feelings onto them. Just like humans, there is a specific limit to which they can tolerate emotions. Okay, this was a short — but hopefully useful — intro on dog depression. Get ready to take notes! Low activity levels and refusing playtime are generally the first and most common signs that your dog is depressed. Before you start panicking, try to bring in a family member or a friend your pup knows well. But what happens when your Frenchie is refusing a delicious dog snack? Try offering them their favorite treat. Adult Frenchies do spend up to 14 hours a day snoozing. Relaxing is one thing, though. So, if your Frenchie refuses to get out of bed, and all you hear is snoring sounds — it might be feeling depressed. Note: Excess sleeping often has a psychological background to it. Constant sleep is not the only sign. Insomnia is another red flag — and this one could have an impact on you, too. And, honestly, they might get on your nerves, too. How is this connected? Well, licking could be a form of self-soothing — just like too much sleeping. Also, excess licking can have health consequences. Your French bulldog can pick up a lot of parasites and dust mites that could lead to infections and inflammation. You ought to be careful with this one. You should start worrying when barking turns into howling, though. These sudden and aggressive outbursts can happen whenever. Your Frenchie can bite you — or growl until you leave the room. Your Frenchie will either have sudden aggressive outbursts towards you or will try to ruin your furniture. Flattening their ears is a sign of anxiety, fear, and depression. The sadder or more frightened your Frenchie is, the more its ears will go back. There is probably an underlying medical cause behind this; you might want to call the vet. Here are a couple of tips for concerned owners. Cuddle with them, take them on regular walks — and even talk to them. Your dog needs your love, but it also needs company. Consider taking your Frenchie to dog parks more often and arrange dog playdates. Call your vet for a one-on-one medical consultation if you notice that the matter is spiraling out of hand. Maybe your Frenchie is suffering from something more serious — and it needs medication. Our Final Thoughts There are many signs that your French bulldog is depressed. They can be related to the environment, food, anger issues — or even sleeping patterns. The main point is, dog depression is genuine, and you need to deal with it. When not writing, he enjoys hiking and time in nature with his pets. Pin1 1 Shares We all want to have a well-adjusted French Bulldog, but with their sad faces it can be hard to tell if they are in fact depressed and unhappy. As a generalization, French Bulldogs always look sad so as an owner you should instead look for other signs of depression aside from their facial expression. But before I explain how tell if your French Bulldog is depressed and what could be causing the depression, just a quick caveat; long-term canine depression is very unusual. With most Frenchies you will find times when they are depressed, but in the majority of cases it will be a short-term thing typically due to an environmental or routine change. Longer term depression in Frenchies can arise from a major life change. For example, perhaps their companion dog died, they have had a nasty injury, have moved home, or experienced some form of trauma. This French Bulldog sad face, is actually a happy face — go figure! Here are all the signs of depression and sadness you need to look out for. Will hide, cower, and be fearful of you French bulldog depression will often manifest itself with hiding behavior. The reason your French Bulldog hides can be down to a range of issues, many of which I will explain further down in the guide when I look at the causes of depression. However, simple reasons can be a change in what they are used to. Think of home moves, new people, or changes to their routine. Frenchies will seek out small and dark places to hide in when they are sad, depressed, frightened, or stressed. Frenchies are social companion dogs. If you leave them alone for just a couple of hours, they can suffer with separation anxiety. With a little bit of coaxing and love they will soon be back to their normal selves. Handy Hint: To find out more about separation anxiety in Frenchies and how it can make them sad or depressed, read this guide. It refers to when your dog will look at you, but with its head bowed or to one side, but still with the eyes fixed on you but with one key difference; you can see the whites of the eyes in a crescent shape showing. This whale eye behaviour is a classic sign of a dog being stressed, fearful, anxious, or depressed. Whale eye in this half moon shape can be a sign of stress, but not always in a Frenchie. Dogs of a brachycephalic breed such as Frenchies always have a little bit of white showing in their eyes. Will have a change in appetite One of the biggest ways to tell if your French bulldog is depressed will be a loss of appetite. But, just like humans, sometimes dogs can even more when they are feeling sad and down. However, most of the time, a sad French Bulldog will lose their appetite. This can be a sign of increased stress levels. Thankfully, this has only ever lasted for half a day at most with our Frenchie, but it should be closely monitored. This will usually be due to a medical complaint, so you should consult with your vet if it goes on for too long. Will lick themselves more than usual One of the lesser known signs of depression in a French Bulldog is excessive licking. It will often be mis-interpreted as them licking a wound or cleaning themselves. Why is licking excessively a sign of stress, depression, or sadness though? Firstly, a dog will lick more in order to sooth itself. I believe this is a hereditary thing from when their mother would lick and wash them in a litter. What better way to feel happier than putting yourself in a comfortable mental zone? The second reason why excessive licking could mean your Frenchie is depressed is medical. Dogs that scratch, itch, and lick more than usual could have a skin problem. Handy Hint: To find out what skin problems Frenchies suffer with and what signs to look out for, read this guide. I found this quote from Dr Anita Patel , a leading veterinary dermatologist which sums it up very well. What we now know is that skin issues can be one of the biggest causes of depression for dogs. And like people, when a dog is depressed, they lose interest in the things they usually love. Frequently itching, scratching, nibbling or licking themselves could be a strong sign of a skin condition. In rarer cases of French Bulldog depression, it could actually go in completely the opposite direction, with them not sleeping at all. We had this with Claude once when he had a gastro-intestinal problem. He was unable to sleep and was very depressed until the infection passed. In the graph below you can see what a typical sleeping pattern can look like when your Frenchie is not sad or down in the dumps. This is how many hours a day a Frenchie will typically sleep. You can read how many of sleep is normal here. Will start yawning and panting This is another lesser known sign your French bulldog is depressed is yawning. Scientists believe there is a lot of foundation in it read more on PsychologyToday. In dog obedience classes, for example, I have often seen a dog yawn immediately after its master scolded it for something or gave it a very harsh correction. Dogs will often pant when they are scared — if you have a dog that hates loud noises such as fireworks, you might have seen this in action. Will urinate or defecate indoors Dogs can also respond to stress by urinating inside of the house. This one can come out of nowhere even with previously very well trained Frenchies. French Bulldog acting depressed will often combine in by soiling the floor inside of the house. Dog behavioural specialists say this is very common after a house move, or high times of anxiety when a dog will mark its territory — or even be afraid to go outdoors. In many cases though, it will be down to fear and anxiety. Destructive behavior will often be combined with a lack of obedience and not responding to commands. Digging is a classic sign too. Often Frenchies will dig holes in the garden because they literally want to escape and get to another place. Will lose interest in toys and play Very depressed and sad French Bulldogs will stop doing the things that they love. This can be going for walks, being at your side, and even losing interest their toys. Handy Hint: You might find that your Frenchie cheers up by being stimulated by some new toys. Why is your French bulldog sad in this scenario? Well, like most of the signals on this list, there could be an underlying health issue bring them down. Will growl and be aggressive And the most obvious is saved for last. Frenchies that are sick or scared can become aggressive. It makes sense; dogs who are stressed can become fearful, and not want anybody near them. Handy Hint: If your Frenchie is biting for non-stress related reasons then there are ways in which you can train them to stop. See this guide to preventing biting behavior. If your French Bulldog seems depressed it could be down to a number of reasons. Here are some of the most common reasons why your dog could be sad. Change in routine or their environment Frenchies are very sensitive to change. I know one owner whose puppy had a long period of depression after a house move. It took their dog a month to get used to the change of surroundings not too soon after it had settled into a new home shortly after being taken away from the mother. Many dog owners report depression in their pups after a new baby is born and brought into the family home. Others talk about their dog being sad if they have had to spend more time than usual out of the home perhaps with a new job. Traumatic incident or injury French Bulldogs can also act depressed after a stressful incident or an injury. Injuries that involve going to a vet could put your dog well out of its comfort zone. Having to be prodded, poked, and injected will often raise anxiety levels for a long time after the injury has been treated. The same sadness will manifest itself in Frenchies whose owners have passed away. It can be very challenging to take on the dog who has lost their owner. You can read how to help them out further down the page. Loneliness French Bulldogs are companion animals. I recommend two Frenchies being better than one for this very reason. Fear and stress One Frenchie owner I spoke to told me how her dog became depressed after new neighbors moved in who had a dog. Her French Bulldog knew the new dog was on the other side of the fence in the backyard, and she believes the depression set in due to anxiety over territory. Separation anxiety Separation anxiety is a common theme with Frenchies and one of the main reasons why they will become depressed. Symptoms of separation anxiety, and therefore depression include: Urinating and defecating indoors. Pacing, heavy panting, and drooling. Chewing, digging , and destructive behavior. Escape attempts. I mentioned human babies coming into a household earlier as a prime reason for depression. The reason being, the focus of attention will move from the dog to the new arrival. Sickness And last but not least; sickness. Your French Bulldog could always look sad due to illness. The depression could very well be a secondary symptom of pain and discomfort. For example, if your Frenchie no longer wants to go for a walk, preferably to look miserable and disinterested, it could be the on-set of canine arthritis pain. You can usually lift a sad funk with things such as: Offer plenty of attention and love. Keep routines and schedules the same Keep them well entertained with play and exercise. Consider getting them a dog companion. Buy new toys to keep them mentally active and stimulated. Give them more socialization with other dogs. Give them a safe and comfortable place to bed down. Give them time to feel better — it will probably lift after a couple of hours. If nothing else works, then you should seek professional support from a vet. They will be able to do checks and blood tests to look for any medical reasons that could be caused the depressed behavior. These work very similar to how depression meds do with humans. Conclusion The bottom line is that Frenchies will typically become sad after a major event or change in their life. And how will you know your Frenchie is loving life? Dogs are like people in more ways than people seem to give them credit. Like people, dogs can experience several emotions. We see these in how they interact through their body language. Dogs can be happy, sad, fearful, and angry. If your Frenchie friend is suddenly acting listless or even sad, and it seems to last for an extended period, you might be worried there is a problem. Frenchies, like all dogs, can act sad for several reasons. Sadness can be a normal emotion, such as after your dog has lost a companion, had an upheaval in routine, or lost an owner. Sometimes, a change in the environment, like moving or bringing home a new baby, can cause it. Sometimes, your dog might be sad because you scolded him. With that information in mind, you might be wondering how you can tell if your dog is just sad or if he may suffer from depression. Sadness is common for the causes mentioned above. Just like people, your dog is bound to be sad sometimes. Generally speaking, sadness is pretty easy to identify, even in Frenchies that already naturally look sad with their droopier faces. But at some point, that sadness can even become depression that requires some treatment. Temporary sadness is to be expected from time to time. However, sadness is not the same as depression. When your dog is depressed, the sadness does not disappear. Depression is rare in dogs, but it does occur sometimes. Depressed dogs are those which appear to be sad for much longer than you would expect. They may not participate in their favorite activities at all or completely reject food. Like in humans, depression in dogs can seriously impact their wellbeing and behavior that may require further treatment. Just like people, dogs can be medicated with antidepressants. Why is My French Bulldog Depressed? You might wonder what dogs have to be depressed about. After all, they get fun, food, shelter, and built-in companions with their owners. Grief: The most common reason for depression in dogs is grief. It could be in the form of losing a companion, such as another dog, a special toy, or even a human member of the household who has moved out of the house or passed away. Environmental Changes: Changes in the environment can lead to depression as well. It refers to the seasonal depression people face in areas with very little sunlight in the winter. Your dog is sensitive, and sometimes, dogs can go through depression as the seasons change. Trauma: Finally, trauma can lead to depression. Signs of Depression In My Frenchie If your dog is depressed, four primary signs will last longer than just a couple of days. These are: Sleeping more. Animals, especially domestic ones, can also be depressed, but unlike people who can articulate their problems, animals are pretty much helpless in this department. That is why it is up to you as their owner and a friend! After all, the whole point of getting a dog is joy and who can be happy when their loved one is depressed, right? Frenchies are very delicate and emotional beings, no matter how tough some of them look on the outside! Being separated from their beloved human can cause serious problems. Some of them have more energy than others and they are more active, some are quieter and more introverted… After all, even Frenchies can have a bad day or be lazy from time to time, but here are some general symptoms that indicate your Frenchie may suffer from Frenchie depression: Appetite problems. Very often when a Frenchie is sad and going through some rough time, like losing his owner, pack member or a very close pet friend, he can lose interest in food and lose some weight. On some occasions, sad Frenchies soak their sorrow in food and gain some weight if that lasts longer. Changes in sleep. Losing interest. If your Frenchie no longer looks forward to things that used to make him happy, like going for a walk, favorite toy, food he used to love or playing with you and has generally become less active, he is probably depressed. Licking his paws. Some Frenchie do that to soothe themselves when they are in sorrow. If a Frenchie that is normally playful and energized tends to avoid people and goes somewhere he can be isolated, he is most likely injured, ill or depressed. In this case, you should first make sure there is not some physical problem that is bothering your French Bulldog, and if all physical causes are eliminated, then he probably has emotional problems. These are some of the clues for you, but safest thing is to take your frenchie to a vet. Only after you have eliminated all medical and physical issues, you can know for sure it is depression and then look for appropriate treatment. Play with him, take him for a walk more often than usual, take him to a park to play with other French Bulldogs or let him engage in some other activities he loves. Buy him some new toys, preferably one that will make him more occupied and distract him for a longer period of time. If your Frenchie has lost a pet companion, maybe you should get him another one. Give your Frenchie some time to bounce back, be patient and be there for him. Remember, you are the only person he can count on. If it takes too long for him to get back to being active, playful and his usual self, then you have no option but to take him to a veterinarian. He may need to do some blood analysis to eliminate the medical cause of this condition and after that, he may prescribe some french bulldog antidepressant. This should help your Frenchie go through this rough period, but remember- love and patience is the best cure for all living things, especially your furry little friend!

Second, do some online research. There are many websites that allow dog owners to review breeders. Reading through these reviews can give you a good idea of what the breeder is like and whether or not they are reputable. Third, social media is a great new way to find out about breeders that may not be in your local area. If you do not want to visit the kennel in person, at least meet with the breeder of your pup face-to-face before you put any money down. There are plenty of reputable breeders out there who will be more than happy to help you find the perfect puppy for your family. Do your research, ask lots of questions. Questions to Ask Ask for References from Your German Shepherd Breeder in Massachusetts Make sure the breeder has a list of references that you can contact who have purchased dogs from them in the past. Do not be afraid to call or email these people and ask questions about their experience with the breeder, whether they are happy with their dog, if they recommend her, and if they would buy a dog from her again. Be prepared to wait for the right puppy. Be cautious of any German Shepherd Breeder in Massachusetts that does not offer you references. If your breeder tells you he is unable to provide this information for some reason, then take this as a red flag and politely thank him for his time but do not purchase anything from him. An ethical breeder will be happy to provide you with documentation that proves that his dogs are healthy and have been cleared of any genetic health issues. Ask Your Massachusetts German Shepherd Breeder if You Can Meet Past Customers Many people who go to a breeder and meet the parents of the puppy they are interested in, find out that if they had met some of the past customers who have purchased a puppy from our German Shepherd Breeder, they would not have even considered buying a puppy from this breeder. Many of these past customers will tell you that they did not get what was been promised to them when it came to the exercise requirements, temperament and loyalty qualities that these German Shepherds possessed. In fact, many of us made costly mistakes with our first dog or dogs because we were unaware of the time commitments involved in owning a quality German Shepherd Dog that is going to resemble what has been advertised by so many breeders around the country. Meeting past customers will help you to understand what you are getting into if you purchase a puppy from our German Shepherd Breeder. When looking for a German Shepherd Breeder in Massachusetts, it is important to ask if they have a good veterinarian that they use. This will help you to ensure that your puppy is healthy and has all of its vaccinations. Happy and healthy puppies are the goal of every breeder. Some of these signs include: The breeder does not allow you to meet any past customers The breeder does not have a good veterinarian that they use The puppies are kept in poor conditions The breeder is asking for too much money for a puppy If you see any of these signs, it is best to walk away and find a different breeder. It is not worth it to purchase a puppy from an unethical breeder, as you will likely end up with a dog that has health problems and behaves poorly. Ask The Massachusetts Breeder if Your German Shepherd Puppy Has Any Health Problems The best way to determine whether or not a breeder is ethical and responsible is to ask if the puppies they offer for sale have any health problems. Most reputable German Shepherd Dog Breeders in Massachusetts provide you with a written health guarantee that ensures every puppy they sell will be free of genetic health issues. An honest and ethical breeder should be able to prove their claims by providing you with proof that all of their dogs are free from genetic health concerns. If they cannot do this, then walk away. When your puppy is first brought home it is a good idea to confine them to a crate or a small area with nothing on the ground that they can chew. This lets them get used to being in one spot without getting into trouble. Once you have taught your German Shepherd Dog not to chew things you can give them free reign of the house though still keeping dangerous items out of their reach. If you want, but this may be difficult if your new dog has already chewed through everything at least once, you can purchase some baby gates and put them up around your house so that your puppy is confined to specific rooms unless they are leashed. If all goes well, and it usually does, after about 3 months sometimes sooner your puppy will have learned the house rules and can be allowed to roam free. Potty Training Your New German Shepherd Puppy One of the most important things you will need to do when potty training your new puppy is to be consistent. You should take them out every time they eat, drink, or play and also after they wake up from a nap. Reward them with lots of praise and a treat when they go potty in the right spot. It can be helpful to put your puppy on a regular feeding schedule as this will help with predictability when it comes to going potty. Once your puppy is consistently going potty outside you can start to slowly lengthen the amount of time between bathroom breaks. Training Your German Shepherd Dog German Shepherds are intelligent dogs and with a little bit of training they can be taught to do all sorts of things. Some popular commands that people teach their GSDs are sit, stay, come, down, and guard. You can find lots of resources online about how to train your dog using positive reinforcement techniques like treats and praise. One thing to keep in mind when training your German Shepherd is that they need plenty of exercise. A good way to tire them out is to take them on long walks or play fetch with them in the park. Thank you for reading and happy hunting. I love animals and love helping people adopt a pet. It all started when attending Missouri State University and I began volunteering at an animal shelter. What would be the perfect puppy to you? Well, many people would think of the beautiful German Shepherd breed. This versatile, hard-working, intelligent dog is truly good at so many things. You are sure that you want to become a German Shepherd owner, so where should you start your journey? The answer is easy: the first thing you need to do is check the breeder! Since German Shepherds are pretty popular in Massachusetts, there are many breeders who can offer you this dog breed. So, how can you make a decision and choose a breeder? By doing this, you will see the environment where the German Shepherd is living, and you will also be able to estimate his daily routine and his relationship with the breeders, too. Just calling or texting your breeder before you buy is simply not enough! Beware that you are welcoming a new life into your home, and that both of you will have to make certain adjustments. Therefore, one visit to the kennel could either allow you to decide whether you should become a German Shepherd owner, or maybe wait with this decision. Before you decide to buy a German Shepherd, check with the breeder if their dogs have AKC health certificates. If you are dealing with a reputable breeder, this is the most normal question, which you will not even have to ask because for reputable breeders, a health certificate is a must. However, if the breeder avoids answering this question or does not offer any specific answer, take this as a warning. He is probably a frivolous breeder who does not care enough about the health of his dogs. Well, if the breeder has a reputable veterinarian, and suggests that you check references from past customers, allowing you to see clearly that the puppies are living in really good conditions — we can say that you will not make a mistake by choosing to buy your German Shepherd from this kind of breeder. Just to be sure: the best way is to pay a visit to a couple of kennels in order to finally make the right decision. However, the price depends on a couple of factors. Color German Shepherds are usually either black, sable , or gray, or else they have two colors combined: black and silver , black and red, or black and tan. Still, if you are a fan of rare colors, there are some unusual German Shepherd colors, such as the Isabella German Shepherd , whose color is light lavender, or the Liver German Shepherd , which resembles a brownish red. Working lines or show lines? If you are looking for a friend and companion in your dog, then a show-line German Shepherd would be a good choice for you. On the other hand, if you are thinking of a protective, obedient dog, then a working-line German Shepherd is the one you should be looking for. However, be ready to pay some more money for working lines. That boosts the initial price by at least a few hundred dollars. To Conclude This dog breed is very popular and extremely versatile — no wonder why there are so many German Shepherd breeders in Massachusetts. If you are looking for healthy German Shepherd puppies in Massachusetts, make sure you have thought about all of the important questions related to the choice of a breeder. Just like you are making a choice for the best breeder, a reputable breeder is looking for the best possible new homes for their German Shepherds that he has been raising and training from birth. Patience is required with all the training and activity requirements, but this handsome Boxane is still a great cross. Lifespan Sociability Buying any dog requires commitment. But when that dog is as big as a Boxane, there are a few extra things you need to consider. For starters, these dogs need a great deal of outdoor space. Ideally, that should be in the form of a large and secure yard in which they can run about freely. From a financial perspective, you should also consider whether you can afford to keep a dog this size. Boxanes eat a large amount of food, and not only does the cost of their food add up, but everything they need, including things like vaccinations and holiday boarding, will cost more than it would be for a smaller dog. As is typical with hybrid breeds, particularly those with parent dogs that have significant physical differences, the appearance of your puppy can vary substantially, depending upon which genes are most dominant. This means that fully grown Boxanes from the same litter may have a weight range of between 60 and pounds. Neither the Great Dane nor the Boxer has a reputation for being an excessive barker, a trait that they have passed on to the Boxane. This is not to say that they are not vocal dogs, just that they will usually vocalize with a range of grumbles, growls, and whines. Aggression toward other dogs is a trait that the Boxane can sometimes inherit from their Great Dane parent and is an issue that if left unchecked, can be particularly problematic given their size. Fortunately, this aggressive behavior can be prevented or at least greatly reduced through early socialization, ongoing regular exposure to other dogs, and training. To start with, due to their size, they need a family that lives in a house with a large yard. The Boxane is not at all suitable for life in an apartment. They are typically quite good with children. However, they are excitable dogs, and when they start running and jumping about the place, they can unintentionally knock a small child over and injure them. For this reason, the Boxane is not the best dog to get when you have toddlers and young children. They require a great deal of exercise each day, and you need to be prepared to spend several hours a day taking them out for a long walk or run. You should also be prepared for them to take over and destroy your yard. As any owner of a big dog will tell you, it is next to impossible to maintain a nicely manicured lawn when you have a large dog romping around on it every day. We recommend that a Boxane should be fed high-quality, size-specific dog food, such as Royal Canin Large Adult Dry Dog Food , which will meet all their daily nutritional requirements. Being large dogs, Boxanes can be susceptible to joint problems later in their life, and these can be more of a problem when a dog is overweight. On average, your Boxane will require at least 60—90 minutes of vigorous exercise each day. In addition to taking them for a walk or run around the neighborhood, you may want to consider activities such as hiking or trail running , as exploring new areas and different routes is a great way to prevent boredom from setting in. They do, however, have a bit of a stubborn streak. So, unless you find a way to keep their training fun and interesting, you may have trouble getting your dog to go along with the program. As mentioned earlier, it is imperative that in addition to obedience training, you take the time to socialize your Boxane while they are young. It is particularly important that your dog gets comfortable meeting and playing with new dogs while still a puppy, to prevent them from showing aggression toward other dogs later in life. They have short straight hair that will not knot or tangle, so they can typically get away with being brushed once every couple of weeks. Regular bathing is not required either, which given the size of the Boxane, is fortunate. As with all dogs, your Boxane will need to have their nails clipped every four to six weeks and will also benefit from having their teeth brushed with canine toothpaste regularly. To understand dogs fully requires an understanding of where they have come from. So here follows a history of both parent breeds. The Boxer adds even more liveliness and exuberance to the character of the Boxane What are the history and origins of the Great Dane Boxer Mix? In order to truly understand the qualities and character of a classic or hybrid breed it is essential to have an idea of their original purpose and development. So here follows an account of the fascinating history surrounding both the Great Dane and the Boxer. These dogs had the role of holding down large prey, such as boars and deer, once the sight-hounds had identified and slowed their victim down. Boxers are intelligent, loyal and devoted companions. Many Boxer owners claim that once you own a Boxer you will be smitten with the breed and never think about owning another dog. They are particularly celebrated for their clownish antics and sense of fun during a very prolonged puppy-hood. But that is not to say that this dog does not also have a serious side. Added into the mix is the tenacity and drive of the Terrier influence. The Boxer is a very energetic and athletic dog with a high prey drive. This means that you can expect this dynamic dog to boisterously chase and run around. Some of the breed will go after small animals on a walk and this combined with an inquisitive nature means that they love to explore. This means recall should be an important feature of the training regime. This is also a very active breed who need a good outdoor space to play in and once they have fully grown thrive on long walks and plenty of exercise. Like the Boxer , when fully grown, they are able to walk for many miles tirelessly. So the Great Dane Boxer mix will require plenty of exercise, but will offer an excellent companion to any hikers or long distance walkers out there. The Great Dane could suitably be described as the biggest lapdog on the planet and have been known to follow their humans absolutely everywhere. The Boxer is another dog who absolutely thrives on human company and will want to constantly play with his human family. The Great Dane tends to have a mellow temperament making them an excellent founding dog when combined with more excitable breeds. This tends to lead to a hybrid dog still full of vivacity and playfulness but easier to manage and less excitable and his is certainly true of the Boxer Great Dane Mix. These colossal canines will constantly be out for a good time, remaining puppy-like play-mates for most of their adulthood. They will also offer an excellent guardian of the family and the home. Other linked hybrid breeds: Cane Corso Boxer Mix. Although both loyal dogs with a great sense of fun, the Boxer is a very busy, inquisitive and high energy dog who never tires of playing, exploring and performing various clownish antics. The Great Dane has a more mellow temperament than the Boxer , although they are still playful and also have a cheeky sense of humor. The Boxer also has the reputation for being a little more alert than the Great Dane as well as being quicker to train. But if it is fun and excitement you are looking for then look no further than the wonderful combination of breeds neatly packaged in the adorable Boxane. What is an interesting fact about the Boxane? The Boxane is a hybrid whose parent breeds have a lot in common. Both the Great Dane and the Boxer also share common heritage in that the Mastiff is thought to have influenced both breeds. As with all mixed breeds, the Boxane could favor either parent breed in a number of ways. This dog, like both parent breeds, will have a lean muscularity as well as an athletic build with a well defined, tucked up stomach and flanks. The back will be straight and the tapering tail carried high. The bluntness of the short muzzle of Boxer is likely to be softened by the influence of the Great Dane which is deeper and more squared. There is a possibility of some slight furrowing or wrinkles on the forehead through the Boxer influence. The Boxane is a very physically impressive dog with a kind inquisitive expression. The Great Dane not only casts a large shadow, but literally becomes a a large shadow as it follows its owners around. The Boxer influence will do little to mitigate this as they are also a people-oriented breed and extremely loyal. Nevertheless this hybrid breed is going to need a very active and experienced owner willing to spend time ensuring this dog is socialized and fully entertained with extensive walking and lots of interactive play. So you can certainly expect a Boxer Great Dane Mix to be an exuberant and spirited. In addition both parent breeds absolutely dote on their owners and are intensely loyal as well as being extremely protective. But it must be conceded that the Boxer has inherited some of the stubbornness of the Bulldog. Added to this, the Boxer , like the Great Dane, is a sensitive dog. This means it will require consistent , patient training which is firm but gentle and based around positive reinforcement. With socialization and training the Boxane will be a confident and obedient dog who is both a good companion in the home, and a well-behaved canine citizen outside of the home. But the Great Dane influence is likely to temper this stubbornness, and both dog breeds thrive on praise and are very eager to please. You can therefore expect a Boxer Great Dane Mix to be a devoted companion who will generally be biddable. It is important, however, to make sure any training is governed by an approach based around positive reinforcement to ensure the dog is happy, confident and a joy outside of the house. But this dog will want to play with everything that moves including children and any other pets. This makes early socialization absolutely imperative to avoid accidents and maintain relaxed and problem-free relationships between this huge hound and other canine, human and even feline members of the family. The Boxer is people-oriented but will still be protective of its family when strangers are in close proximity of its human pack. It will also bark an alarm if anyone approaches the house adding an edge to the more mellow and accepting temperament of the Great Dane. Also both of these dogs are powerful and swift, so the deep resounding bark of the this dog will quickly followed by this lithe and muscular guardian. But you can be certain that with socialization in place any welcome visitors will have absolutely nothing to fear. The Boxane is likely to be gregarious and willing to play with other dogs, although due to the Boxer influence there may be the occasional episode of dominant behaviour or aggression with a few dogs. Nevertheless early socialization will generally ensure that this huge hound will enjoy play-time with its canine pals without incident. This dog will be able to live with smaller animals and other dogs but if you are bringing a puppy home to an established dog this should be done in a carefully structured way as outlined in introducing a puppy to an older dog. The Boxer Great Dane Mix, when fully grown, also provides the ideal dog for those who enjoy hiking and outdoor pursuits as both parent breeds are known to enjoy very long walks with ample opportunity to run around off the leash. If there is one thing that you can absolutely guarantee with the Great Dane Boxer Mix is that it is certainly going to require plenty of exercise including at least one long walk a day of around 2 hours. This dog will also make a good jogging companion for the more active owners. This could also include around 20 minutes of obedience training each day. The Boxane is a dog who will benefit from a good run of the leash each day. But ensure that the Great Dane Boxer Mix is trained in recall from as early age as possible to ensure that they are consistently manageable and obedient outside. Remember also that any Great Dane hybrid dog requires special consideration in terms of the planning of exercise for puppies and young dogs that are still growing. This means that exercise should initially be compartmentalized into little and often rather than one walk in the very early years of the dog. This is because over-exercise can potentially damage bones, ligament and joints in the Great Dane and potentially also in this dog. If you are concerned regarding this then it is highly advised that you discuss this with a vet alongside feeding and other aspects of fundamental care for this huge hybrid. For an experienced owner who is also very active the Great Dane Boxer Mix makes an absolutely wonderful family pet. Although it must be in a household which has the time to invest in training and exercise. This dog will be intensely playful and will demand lots of interactive play. But they are very likely to have a fantastic personally as fun-loving dogs who are adorably clownish. The Boxane will be fiercely protective of the family and very eager to please. This will be good and patient with children, although all play must be carefully supervised.
