Box , Spotsylvania, VA .Further information: Bullenbeisser Friedrich Robert and his boxer, The Boxer is a hunting mastiff developed in Germany in the late 19th century from the now extinct Bullenbeisser , a dog of English Mastiff descent, and Bulldogs brought in from Great Britain. Its task was to seize the prey and hold it until the hunters arrived. In later years, faster dogs were favored and a smaller Bullenbeisser was bred in Brabant , in northern Belgium. The Brabanter Bullenbeisser is generally accepted as being a direct ancestor of today's Boxer. The club went on to publish the first Boxer breed standard in , a detailed document that has not been changed much since. During World War I , the Boxer was co-opted for military work, acting as a valuable messenger dog, pack carrier, attack dog , and guard dog. Taken home by returning soldiers, the dog was introduced to a wider audience and soon became a favorite as a companion, a show dog, and a guard dog. Boxer early genealogy chart Flocki, the first Boxer German citizen George Alt, a Munich resident, mated a brindle-colored female dog imported from France named Flora with a local dog of unknown ancestry, known simply as "Boxer", resulting in a fawn-and-white male, named Lechner's Box after its owner. This dog was mated with his own dam, Flora, and one of his offspring was a female called Alt's Schecken. George Alt mated Schecken with a Bulldog named Dr. Flocki was the first Boxer to enter the German Stud Book after winning the aforementioned show for St. Bernards in Munich , which was the first event to have a class specific for Boxers. Blanka von Angertor, Flocki's sister, was even more influential when mated with Piccolo von Angertor Lechner's Box grandson to produce the predominantly white particolored female dog Meta von der Passage, which, even bearing little resemblance with the modern Boxer standard early photographs depict her as too long, weak-backed, and down-faced , is considered the mother of the breed. Our great line of sires all trace directly back to this female. She was a substantially built, low to the ground, brindle and white particolor, lacking in underjaw and exceedingly lippy. As a producing female, few in any breed can match her record. She consistently whelped puppies of marvelous type and rare quality. Those of her offspring sired by Flock St. Salvator and Wotan dominate all present-day pedigrees. Combined with Wotan and Mirzl children, they made the Boxer. Breed name[ edit ] The name "Boxer" is supposedly derived from the breed's tendency to play by standing on its hind legs and " boxing " with its front paws. Brace's Pet Owner's Guide to the Boxer, this theory is the least plausible explanation. At that time, the spelling "baxer" equalled "boxer". Both the verb boxen [English "to box, to punch, to jab"] and the noun Boxer were common German words as early as the late 18th century. The term Boxl, also written Buxn or Buchsen in the Bavarian dialect, means "short leather trousers" or "underwear". The very similar-sounding term Boxerl, also from the Bavarian dialect, is an endearing term for Boxer. These dogs were the result from mixes of Bullenbeisser and other similar breeds. Bier beer probably refers to the Biergarten, the typical Munich beer garden, an open-air restaurant where people used to take their dogs along. The nickname "Deutscher Boxer" was derived from Bierboxer and Boxer could also be a corruption of the former or a contraction of the latter. This seems improbable. Any such action would likely result in a badly bitten if not broken leg. On the other hand, a German breeder of 40 years' experience states positively that the Boxer does not use his feet, except to try to extinguish a small flame such as a burning match. But a Boxer does box with his head. He will hit not bite a cat with his muzzle hard enough to knock it out and he will box a ball with his nose. Or perhaps, since the German dictionary translates Boxer as "prize-fighter", the name was bestowed in appreciation of the fighting qualities of the breed rather than its technique. Boxer is also the name of a dog owned by John Peerybingle, the main character in the best-selling book The Cricket on the Hearth by Charles Dickens , which is evidence that "Boxer" was commonly used as a dog name by the early 19th century, before the establishment of the breed by the end of that same century. A brindle Boxer with two white socks Brindle, fawn, and white Boxer puppies See also: Dog health A healthy Boxer puppy Leading health issues to which Boxers are prone include cancers , heart conditions such as aortic stenosis and arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy the so-called " Boxer cardiomyopathy " , [35] hypothyroidism , hip dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy and epilepsy; other conditions that may be seen are gastric dilatation volvulus also known as bloat , intestinal problems, and allergies although these may be more related to diet than breed. An emerging health concern among boxers is Boxer Juvenile Kidney Disease JKD , where the kidneys do not develop normally during gestation and leads to chronic renal failure. There is strong evidence to suggest JKD is an inherited condition in boxers with research being undertaken by the University of Ohio to determine the gene mutation, as well as other work separately by the UK Boxer Breeder Council. Mortality due to infection increases significantly with increases in inbreeding. The breed is particularly predisposed to mast cell tumours, a cancer of the immune system. Because of their brachycephalic heads, they do not do well with high heat or humidity, and common sense should prevail when exercising a Boxer in these conditions. See also: Dog food Boxers need plenty of exercise, which means their diet should be high in quality calories. The main source of these calories should be lean animal protein, which include lean chicken, turkey, lamb, and fish. They sometimes appear at dog agility or dog obedience trials and flyball events. These strong and intelligent animals have also been used as service dogs, guide dogs for the blind, therapy dogs, police dogs in K9 units, and occasionally herding cattle or sheep. The versatility of Boxers was recognized early on by the military, which has used them as valuable messenger dogs, pack carriers, and attack and guard dogs in times of war. Notable Boxers[ edit ] Punch and Judy were awarded the Dickin Medal for conspicuous gallantry or devotion to duty while serving in a military conflict. Overview The debate regarding docking a Boxer's tail is side by side with ear cropping. Look to our Ears - To Crop or Not to see which countries allow this and which deem it illegal. Usually, if an owner decides to crop the ears, they will also have the Boxer's tail docked. Docking is the process of having a certain percentage of a Boxer puppy or dog's natural tail removed. This is done to produce a short tail that stands erect. Docking is done one of two ways. The first method is to cut off the blood flow in the tail with the use of a special rubber band, placed so tightly that the blood cannot reach the end of the tail; thus causing it to eventually fall off. The second method is via a procedure in which the tail is cut. Billy the Boxer Photo courtesy of James and Joanna Murphy It is believed that the puppy feels this amputation, since most puppies let out a very loud yelp, however they seem to recover quite quickly. Long ago, it was thought to prevent rabies and increase the dog's running speed; however this has been proven false. With this said, docking has also been done for centuries to prevent damage to the tail. There are no specific records that show why this train of thought was applied to some breeds and not to others. At this point, with docking being done for so many generations, those in favor of this argue that if docking were to suddenly stop, the Boxer breed would not carry 'good tails' tails would too heavy to sit correctly, the dog's balance would be off, etc. The deliberation between those who favor it and those who are against it goes on to say that within a short amount of time the only breeding pool available would be dogs with 'bad' tails that could not produce viable offspring. Of course, all of this is debatable and the Boxer breed is as strong as ever in countries where this is illegal. Putting health and breeding issues aside, some simply believe that a Boxer should have cropped ears and a docked tail to have the "Boxer look". Consensus among those who do choose docking, dictates that the dog looks stronger, more powerful and more intimidating with the cropped and docked appearance. Those who have a dog with a natural tail or those who have a litter of newborns and choose to forgo this procedure should feel just fine about that decision. In regard to dog show requirements, the debate is still on. Some clubs do not give an advantage to a docked dog and others state that docking is expected for a Boxer to conform to requirements. When is Docking Done? Many Boxer breeders will have a puppy docked very early, within a few days of being born. Since a dog is not sold or given to a new owner until the age of at least 8 weeks, many owners do not see the docking process or the healing process. Although this may make some cringe, if a Boxer puppy under 12 weeks old is to have their tail docked, it is usually done without anesthesia. In states where it is legal, an owner may have their Boxer's tail docked at any age ; however the older a dog is the longer amount of time is needed for recovery. In addition, a dog that is quite used to having their tail may have a difficult time adjusting to what may seem to them as an amputated part of their body. Three inches will look quite appropriate for most Boxers expected to be of average size and maybe a tad longer 3. Legality and Banning The laws of docking tails are a bit complicated with changes occurring often. Also, some countries view both ear cropping and tail docking the same; others will allow one but not the other. Though it is illegal in many countries, it is not uncommon for Boxer puppies to be docked at any rate. It should be noted that in many countries, it is the tail docking itself that is banned and it is not unlawful to purchase a puppy with a docked tail. You may be wondering about what the fine or punishment is for docking a Boxer's tail in countries in which it is illegal. Punishment ranges from fines to imprisonment.

We were unable to attend due to puppies being at home, but didnt want the girls to miss out on a great weekend of showing! Dawn got first in class for all three shows. Benelli got first in class all three shows. Benelli also got Reserve Best Female in two show and Best female in one show. For being at a show without mama and dad, the girls did so good! Im so proud of them and a special thanks to Angie for talking the girls! We look forward to the upcoming shows and we are so very excited!! Benelli gained another competition win and many points to add towards obtaining her UKC Champion Title! I have no doubt she will obtain the rest of the needed points and competition win needed to obtain her title soon! The girls did great, even with the judges all wearing masks! We can not wait until the next show!! This was Sergeant's first show and he surprised us all!! We had a blast! Results will be posted in each of their files. Sergeant, Harley, Captain and Dawn participated and did very well! Captain even made it to the Best of Show on Sunday! Dawn and Remi did absolutely wonderful! Harley struggled a bit. She wanted to catch the line instead of the lure! Anyways, they all had a great time and we will certainly be back for more! Harley and Captain got to attend the Norman show! Harley won Reserve Ch x3 shows. Captain and our friend Junior handler Alicia Hood won x1 best Junior class! They both did great! Can't wait until the next show! Remi also came out to the show for her very first time! Dawn and Harley also attended and both did well. Captain, of course, tagged along too! Results will be posted once they are posted on UKC site, as I completely forgot to write down results while at the show! Such an exciting sport. Watching them be so excited to chase the lure is absolutely fun times!! We traveled all of the way there to be a part of this amazing show! We earned a total of 9 titles in both Dock Jumping and Precision Coursing! Harley showed in a couple of shows there, but did not place she was too busy worrying about diving and Captain got to strut around in the TOP 10 Boxer ring! Huge Congratulations to these girls!! Information to come! This means that for every litter, Sergeants Boxers will go down the list and offer puppies to the families in order of deposits received. The family may choose a puppy from the current litter or may pass to wait for a later litter. Even if the family initially expressed the desire for a puppy from a future litter early in the conversation, they will still be asked if they would like to select a puppy when the current litter selections start. Selections start at each litter's 6 weeks of age mark. This allows the families to not only pick from color, but also from personality. Please know that these can change at any time and are only listed for reference. This is non-negotiable. Address: Montgomery, Houston, Texas 4. DS Boxers, Texas. According to the owner, everything started about 20 years ago when she and her son got their first Boxer pet. She has been in love with this dog breed ever since, and she claims that she has the same amount of love for these doggies even today! Although this is more of a hobby breeder, the kennel provides the future pet owner with all documentation and health certificates. However, the owner claims that most doggies are already spoiled because of all the love and cuddling they receive. When it comes to the price, most pups cost differently according to the bloodline, coat color, and registration. The cost of transportation will be added to the overall price you pay for your future pet. If you possess a female Boxer and would like her to have her own puppies, you can use the stud services at this kennel. All you have to do is contact them and make an agreement. Breeder details: Telephone number: Address: Kempner, Texas 5. Black Champion Boxers. With more than 30 years of experience in Boxer breeding, the owners of this kennel, Ron and Debbie, are still loving every aspect of their jobs. They pass their love for Boxers onto their grandchildren as well! After spending time in Arizona, the couple decided to come to Texas and continue their family business, which has been going strong for the last 19 years in Decatur. A acre field is the perfect place to breed these wonderful animals. All puppies from this kennel have been tested for various diseases and conditions, had their dew claws done, and are vaccinated. However, like most Boxers, they do have high energy levels, which is why these dogs are more suitable for homes with bigger back yards. Breeder details:. For this reason, we included these online Boxer breeders for you to check as well. Thus, you can also check a Boxer breeder here. The great thing is that it has an online marketplace to search for a Boxer puppy from any of the states. Since they cover all kinds of breeds, you may find an available puppy through this website. Another thing to note is that you also need to prepare for other costs. In short, aside from the actual cost of the puppy from a breeder, you still need to spend money on other items. Like a new baby in the family, your pup needs some items and some changes. A new puppy at home is a concern for all the family members. Thus, they need to prepare for it as well. As you have your meeting, try to make a schedule of tasks and distribution of responsibilities. Prepare your home. Preparing a home for your Boxer puppy means making it a safe place to play and live. Thus, you need to secure every item that can potentially harm your pet. Moreover, you need to secure your items that your pet can damage, such as shoes, carpets, floor mats, and so on. Shop for supplies. Like all other puppies and babies, Boxer pups needs items for its daily life. The essential things it needs would be beddings, food, and food bowls. You also need to buy a leash and collar for identification. Create a schedule. Besides your pet, you also have your responsibilities. Try to schedule how your pup should do for the day and when you need to pay attention. The great thing about creating a schedule is that it will benefit both you and your pet. Choosing a Good Boxer Seller and Breeder The best Boxer puppies only come from those who take an extra mile in caring for them. Below are certain qualities that you should look for in a Boxer puppy breeder. The Boxer breeder should only breed Boxer puppies. A single breed should be the first thing to remember when searching for a reputable Boxer breeder. Every breed has a mating season to which they breed. If the Boxer breeder sells quite a lot of pups but only has a pair of parents, you can think that it forces the parents to mate so they can have puppies to sell. The Boxer breeder should train pups in their first weeks. Every reputable Boxer breeder gives all the pups around eight weeks at least to stay with their parents. In such a time, the breeder should train the pups before it moves to its new home. The Boxer breeder would continuously be in touch. Other states. I grew up with boxers as my grandmother was an avid lover of the breed and had a lucrative breeding and showing program. While she is no longer with us, I continue her legacy and continue to use her kennel name MerBar Boxers. Each one of my puppies is raised in my home with my children and other pets. I make sure each puppy is loved and has great social skills. I like to give each baby an abundance of attention! His love and compassion for Boxers was felt by those who had the pleasure of spending time with him. Ken loved sports and spending time with friends. He also collected sports memorabilia and other collectibles like Hot Wheels. He truly loved Milo, featured in the the photo with him. Every time we received a message from him he included a picture of him and Milo. He never gave up hope that some treatment would be the ultimate cure. He worked as long as he could and made his journey to the light in late June. His weakened system just couldn't fight any longer. He will be deeply missed by WCBR, and we wish his family peace with his loss. Thank you to so many who have donated to WCBR in his memory. Ken will forever be in our hearts. We need your help. Pick 2: rabbitgoo No Pull Adjustable Dog Harness — This adjustable harness has two leash attachment rings — front and back — to suit your needs. Collars vs Harnesses For Goldendoodles Collars are the most common option for dogs. And, of course, you might do very well with just a collar. Obviously, this may cause your pup to cough and choke if too much pressure is applied. The most important thing when choosing the best dog harness for Goldendoodle is to select one that fits your pup perfectly. However, girth diameter is the best way to determine if the harness will actually fit your Doodle. To do this, put two fingers between your pup and the harness. Keep in mind that your puppy will outgrow their harness once they start to reach adulthood. But how do you choose the best harness for Goldendoodle? In addition to measuring your Doodle, you should also consider what your special needs are. Does your Doodle like to pull a lot? Which harness is easier to put on? Do you need extra durable material? Also, you should consider your climate. These might make some Doodles get too hot when exercising, especially since Doodles tend to run hot to begin with. These usually come with a padded layer to provide your dog extra comfort and reduce friction on the skin. No-Pull Harness No-pull harnesses are designed to minimize your dog pulling the leash. Of course, just owning a no-pull harness does not guarantee that your Doodle will magically stop pulling. Head harness, also called a headcollar Step-In Harness Step-in harnesses are designed so that your dog will have to step into the leg loops for you to put on the harness. This type of harness is great for anxious Doodles who might get scared when putting on an overhead harness. In addition, for Goldendoodles with joint problems, a step-in harness might be a very helpful option. Front Clip Harness Front clip harnesses are great for Doodles who tend to pull a lot. So, since the pressure comes from the front, your pup will naturally slow down. This is probably the most common type of harness. If you have a puller, we recommend you opt for no-pull and front clip harnesses for training. Afterwards, you can switch to back clip harnesses. Dual Clip Harness As you might already guess, dual clip harnesses provide both the front and back clip attachment loops. A dual clip harness is a great option if you like to switch it up based on your current needs. This dog harness is best for Goldendoodles who might get too hot when harnessed in bigger straps or live in a very warm climate. You can use its 2 neck straps and 2 chest straps to create a perfect fit for your dog with some room of growth. The harness also features reflective strips that are strategically placed to enhance visibility during low-light conditions, ensuring your Goldendoodle can be seen by passing vehicles and pedestrians. This feature provides an added layer of safety, especially during evening walks. The soft padding prevents any chafing or discomfort, allowing your dog to move freely without restriction. The breathable mesh material keeps your furry friend cool, even on hot summer days. It is also available in smaller sizes if you have a smaller Doodle. We love it for its adjustable size, no-pull design, ease of use, secure straps, safety features, softness, and breathability. Its price is also affordable and reasonable. The harness features reflective stitching, enhancing visibility during low-light conditions. This provides an added layer of safety when walking your Goldendoodle in the early morning or evening. Additionally, the lightweight and breathable materials prevent chafing or rubbing, allowing your dog to move comfortably without any discomfort. Pros Rip-stop nylon construction to last two times longer Lightweight. However, it can sometimes be a bit tricky to figure out what size harness is best for a Goldendoodle. What size harness is right for a Goldendoodle puppy? The correct harness size for your dog depends on what type of Goldendoodle it is. Goldendoodles are a mix of golden retriever and poodle, but poodles grow to a few different sizes, including larger standard dogs, medium poodles, and small or teacup poodles. What type of poodle your Goldendoodle puppy shares genetics with will help to determine how big it will grow, although some Goldendoodles favor the size of their golden retriever parent. Picking an adjustable harness that can be made larger as the dog grows is a great idea. Miniature adult Goldendoodles generally weigh between 15 and 35 pounds and will most likely only need a small or medium harness. Large standard Goldendoodles can weigh as much as 90 pounds or as little as 50 pounds, and they might need either a medium or large harness. When should a puppy first wear a harness? This helps them get used to the feel of the harness. Getting a dog used to a harness can make leash training much easier later on. The straps of a puppy harness are also usually a bit more narrow, which is less cumbersome and more comfortable for the puppy. Why are harnesses a good choice? Back-clip harnesses are the most common harness type. These harnesses have a single metal loop at the back of the harness for the leash to attach to. However, they can be problematic when it comes to tugging on the leash, and can actually encourage this behavior. These harnesses are an excellent tool for teaching your dog not to pull. However, a dog, particularly a puppy, can become tangled in the leash more easily when it clips to the front of the harness. Dual-clip harnesses are a hybrid of the front- and back-clip harness. These harnesses have a clip in each location, so you can clip the leash wherever is most convenient, or you can gradually teach your dog not to pull by using the front clip before switching to using the back clip. For example, if you and your dog are outdoors frequently, and your dog tends to get wet or muddy, you might want to choose a nylon harness that can be cleaned easily. If you walk at dusk or dawn, a harness with reflective strips of fabric is a great choice. Sharing is caring! View Larger Image Goldendoodles are an amazing crossbreed of the Golden Retriever and Poodle, known for their intelligence, playfulness, and loving personalities. They are truly a joy to have around and are loved by many. One way to ensure this is by using a high-quality harness. A harness can provide better control and support for your Goldendoodle while also reducing strain on their neck and spine. With so many options available on the market, it can be difficult to choose the best one for your pup. Each material has its own unique properties that may make it more or less suitable for your pup. Nylon is a popular choice for harnesses due to its strength and versatility. Polyester is another strong synthetic fabric that is commonly used in best harness for Goldendoodle. Mesh is a great option for Goldendoodles with thick coats, as it allows for breathability. This material is typically used in the chest pads of step-in harnesses. Leather harnesses are a good choice for dogs with coarse or longer coats, as they prevent matting. However, they can be stiff until broken in and may crack with heavy use. Cotton is a gentler option for dogs with sensitive skin. Though not as durable as synthetic materials, cotton harnesses are softer and can be more comfortable. However, it is not the most breathable material, so it may not be the best harness for Goldendoodles like giant Goldendoodles. Not only do they provide a more comfortable walk for your pup, but they also allow for a more secure grip on their leash, especially for dogs who are prone to pulling. Harnesses distribute pressure evenly across the body, reducing the risk of choking and coughing. With the option to attach leash attachment points to both the front and back, harnesses give you more control over your energetic or strong dog. Consider a harness or a leash for Goldendoodle puppy for a more enjoyable and secure walking experience for both you and your furry companion. According to the PDSA PAW report , about a quarter of all owners who adopt a dog from a shelter complain that leash pulling as the most common behavioral problem they face. This is certainly a frustrating issue that can drain all the fun out of walking your dog. The simplest method to deal with a pulling dog is to use an excellent no-pull harness. In addition, behavioral modification through positive training techniques can work together with your harness to keep your dog walking calmly and politely at your side. How do I know for sure what size harness to buy for my dog? Just like clothes for humans, companies that make and sell dog harnesses can differ in their parameters for a specific size. For instance, a Chihuahua will probably be an extra-small size while Great Dane will probably be—you guessed it— extra-large. But dogs can vary wildly within the breed. There are some giant Labs out there and some confusingly small German Shepherds. Not to mention mix breeds, designer dogs, and mutts that can come in any shape or size. Another point to keep in mind is that dogs also vary according to gender. This means that while your male Samoyed might fit happily in a large harness, your female Samoyed might well need a medium one. Therefore, selecting a harness based on breed alone can be misleading and result in purchasing the wrong product altogether. It is essential to only use the breed chart only as a general guideline. One should also be aware that certain breeds are bred to extremes, and finding a harness that fits them can be a challenge. A Boerboel or a Neapolitan Mastiff can easily tip the scales at pounds, making them too big for many harness brands. If in doubt, contact the company first to ensure they have a harness that will fit your dog. Which harness size should I buy for my puppy? A further consideration is what harness to buy for puppies. For example, what size harness should you buy for a Golden Retriever puppy? A large breed like the Golden Retriever will undoubtedly grow out of multiple harnesses by the time it is full-grown. A post shared by Dogs Pets Puppies goldenretrieverpuppys It may need a small or a medium-size from between four and five months and will likely graduate to large when it has reached eight months. This means starting at the end of the tape at the top of the shoulders and circling the tape around the largest portion of the ribcage to where it meets at the shoulders again. How do I weigh my dog? For most dog owners, the easiest way to weigh your dog is to step onto the bathroom scale and weigh yourself. Then get off and climb on again, this time holding your pooch. Of course, if you happen to own a four-pound Teacup Bichon Frise, you can probably make use of your kitchen scales and it would be adorable. On the other hand, some of us own dogs that are far too big to pick up, at least without slipping a disc. In this case, the best thing to do is to go in to see your vet, who will be able to weigh your dog with their specialized veterinary scales. If it is too big, the collar can quickly come off or, worse yet, get caught on something while they are running around. When should a Goldendoodle puppy start wearing a collar? This answer depends on the family, and when the mini Goldendoodle puppy will begin training and socializing. Ten weeks is a good time to start using a collar. Wearing a collar and leash training can be started as early as the family wishes, from eight weeks on, but sometimes it is just nice to give a new puppy time to adjust to their new home. A mini Goldendoodle puppy will move to a new home in the beginning weeks, with new smells and people, and there can be some apprehension combined with curiosity. While new puppy owners may be anxious to welcome the new family member, they may need time to adjust. The mini Goldendoodle puppy will have plenty of time to adjust to a collar and leash and learn what is expected of them, but sooner is better rather than later. During the early months of their life, they will be spending most of their time indoors as they are being house trained and getting acquainted with their new family. For training purposes, this is to start the puppy off on the right foot. If a puppy of this age wears a collar , it is best to have the collar on for short intervals as mini-training sessions. In the beginning, perhaps 15 minutes, and gradually increasing as they get used to the collar being around their neck. Some puppies will not like this while others will be okay with earing it. It is essential to keep a close eye on the mini Goldendoodle puppy when wearing the collar. Strangulation can accidentally occur if they manage to get caught on something while unsupervised. Whether they rest and sleep in a crate , soft bed, or the couch, they can accidentally get injured if they move around and get it caught on something. It is also a good idea to give their neck, skin, and fur a break from wearing the collar collar is like us removing our jewelry and necktie. Imagine wearing that to bed, uncomfortable, right? It also allows the fur rest and go back to its natural position, which, of course, keeps them looking adorably perfect! Final Thoughts.

Impressed with their large size, Romans used the Mastiff to fight in arenas for entertainment. More recently, in the s and s, they were used for hunting bulls, bears, and lion baiting. They were also a common watchdog during this time. By the time the s rolled around, they were mainly used for guardians and as companion dogs. Commonly found in the homes of nobles, these dogs were known for being gentle and mild tempered. After this battle was won by the British, it was estimated that only 14 Mastiffs had survived in the entire country. The Mastiff population was rebuilt mainly by the U. Poodle Breed History: While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over years ago. Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. After the Poodle gained popularity in the 60s and Poodle mixed breeds started gaining traction in the 80s, more and more breeding options became available. The Mastiff was just one of many to be bred with the Poodle in the late s. Mastidoodles tower over most other doodle breeds. With two big parents, that is to be expected. On average, the male Mastiff is between inches in height and the females, which are generally slightly larger, are between inches in height. Poodles are regarded as needing a lot of maintenance—more than most breeds. They generally need brushing almost daily. On the other hand, Mastiffs need to be brushed a few times a week. The amount of grooming that an individual dog needs depends on the dog itself. If the Mastidoodle puppy inherits more of a Poodle-like coat, it will need grooming more often. You can expect to have a Mastidoodle groomed every months, but in warmer climates it should be done closer to weeks to keep them cool. Are Mastidoodles Hypoallergenic? Do Mastidoodles Shed? No, Mastidoodles are usually not completely hypoallergenic. Because one parents is hypoallergenic and the other is not, there is no way to guarantee that the offspring will be hypoallergenic. Mastiffs shed rather heavily, while Poodles are hypoallergenic and shed minimally. Mastidoodle puppies will most likely shed less than a purebred Mastiff because it is mixed with the lower shedding breed of the Poodle. On average, they tend to live anywhere from years. However, all breeds have the possibility to develop some health problems. Some major concerns with the Poodle Mastiff Mix include entropion, elbow dysplasia, and canine hip dysplasia. Due to the cost of treating these common health concerns, we highly encourage all dog owners invest in pet insurance. We recommend getting a free online quote from Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. That being said, sometimes they forget how big they are, so ensure supervision around small children and elderly adults. These dogs love their families and are very loyal. This makes them good watch dogs. They will be quick to give a warning bark to any approaching danger and their size alone is intimidating. The Poodle is an especially smart dog breed, so frequent mental stimulation is important. Mastidoodle Dog Breed Activity Requirements: The Poodle requires a lot of physical activity, but the Mastiff only requires a moderate amount of activity. Expect to spend around an hour a day engaging your Mastidoodle in physical activity. This can include walks, jogs, a good game of fetch, or time to run around with friends in the dog park! Alternative Breeds to the Mastiff Poodle Mix. Lifespan Sociability Of all the mixed doodle breeds, this guy is certainly one of the rarest. This means that you need to be prepared for the long and hard search that is ahead. If you are impatient and are desperate for a dog to join your family in the next few months, this will not happen with the Mastidoodle. He is rare, but this is definitely a huge part of his appeal. It also goes without saying that the Mastidoodle is a huge dog. And do you know what giant dogs need? Lots and lots of space. He might not be as big as his Mastiff parent, but you can be sure that he is much bigger than his Poodle parent. The Mastidoodle can be an obnoxious dog if you allow him to be. For this reason, we suggest that that only an experienced dog owner takes him on. He will inherit a degree of stubbornness from his Mastiff parent, who is a strong-willed pooch. Thankfully, his smart Poodle genes should alleviate this, but do not expect a fully obedient dog in this guy. He can also become overprotective, too, if he is not trained and socialized adequately as a pup. He is courageous and takes his role as family protector very seriously. Thankfully, his Poodle genes will make him more accepting of strangers. The Mastidoodle needs more exercise than most giant dogs, and that is because of his Poodle parentage. Poodles are livewires who were traditional duck hunting dogs, and so they have a lot of working energy that they need to expel. If they become bored, they will leave a trail of destruction behind them. So, you need to be able to commit to time exercising him. He also needs more grooming compared to other dog breeds too. Again, you can blame the Poodle for this. His long and wavy curls need daily grooming to keep him looking his best and prevent any tangling. And with his big body, you can expect that it will take longer to brush him compared to a Chihuahua. The Mastidoodle may shed less than other dogs. His Poodle parent is a hypoallergenic dog, which means that he sheds less than most dog breeds. The Mastidoodle may or may not drool. To drool or not drool? That is the Mastidoodle question! And it is one that you will find out after welcoming him into your home. This means that you need to be prepared for a little doggy drool in your life. The Mastidoodle is genetically unpredictable. He is a mixed dog, and as such, he can take after either parent. As a rare hybrid breed, he will likely be a first-generation pup. This means that there is no breed standard and no expectations about which parent he may turn out like. Just like most giant dogs, the Mastidoodle is a sweet and gentle giant. He is one of the soppiest sweethearts in the canine kingdom, so you need to be prepared for the onslaught of puppy kisses! This is also great news for the younger ones in the house. When he ventures outside, he is lots of fun too. His well-balanced temperament means that he is suited to most families. The Mastidoodle is a very intelligent dog thanks to his Poodle parent, who is ranked as the second most intelligent dog on the planet. This means if you are after a fully obedient dog, you might want to stick to the purebred standard-sized Poodle. Thankfully, he will do as he is told most of the time. Are These Dogs Good for Families? As we have already mentioned, you just need to make sure that you have the right environment for him to do well. A large home with access to a large yard is one of his most essential requirements. But he also needs a family that can spend most of their time with him. As well as stimulate him throughout the day to prevent him from becoming bored and problematic. Because of his large size, you will need to supervise him just in case of accidental bumps with his big derriere. His protective Mastiff genes might make him wary of other animals, which is why his training is necessary. The only pet that he will not be able to live with is ducks and other birds. This is because of his Poodle parentage. His Poodle parent is a traditional German duck hunter, so you will need to keep him well away from ducks and other winged creatures. Things to Know When Owning a Mastidoodle: Now you know more about the Mastidoodle in all of his giant teddy bear glory, here is a list of his day-to-day needs. He will consume between four and five cups of food every day, depending on his age, size, and activity levels. Like his Mastiff parent, he is likely to be a greedy pup, and he will eat anything and everything in sight. If it fits in his mouth, he is going to swallow it. You should feed him a diet that is specifically designed for large breed puppies. This is particularly important during puppyhood. This is because they contain the optimum nutrients that large and giant dogs need, and they help to control his rapid bone growth. In turn, this could decrease his chances of developing bone diseases such as hip dysplasia. You need to set aside at least an hour every day for his exercise routine. But a long and brisk walk around your local park or neighborhood will suffice for most of the week. Because he is an intelligent and active dog, you should mix up his activities to keep him interested. A simple change of scenery or a frequent visit to a local doggy park to meet new friends will benefit him. And it will top up his socialization skills too. Being a doodle mix, he will be fond of the water, so you should try to include this in his exercise routine. He will love you for it, trust us. As you already know, his Mastiff genes might make him a little overprotective, but his Poodle influence should calm this down. Mix him with as many other dogs and animals as you possibly can when he is young, and this will teach him that most dogs are friends and not foe. Also, mix him with unfamiliar humans, as well as new sights and sounds, and this will increase his confidence too. He can be a stubborn dog, and so you need to be persistent with your training. Keep training sessions fun and engaging. And with a treat in your hand , he will do as you say, most of the time. He will usually inherit the Poodle curls, but he will have shorter hair like the Mastiff dog. You should invest in a comb or pin brush to keep matting at bay, and also a slicker brush to pick up all of his dead hair and any dirt. You should bathe him every six to eight weeks to keep him looking and smelling his best. Mastiffs are well known for their drooling potential, and many owners comment that they have a strong doggy odor. The Mastidoodle may or may not drool and smell more than most, but with frequent and thorough grooming, this should keep the smells at bay. When it comes to the drooling, a packet of tissues will do the job. This might seem short, but for a giant dog breed, this is slightly better than average. Keep this guy happy and healthy with regular exercise and the right nutrition, and you could keep him with you for longer. And be sure to keep up to date with trips to the vets. Minor Conditions. If an English Mastiff Mix takes after their Mastiff parent, they will grow into a giant dog breed with a protective instinct. These dogs tend to be gentle giants with their families and are affectionate with them. English Mastiffs tend to be intelligent and reliable dogs that are devoted to their families. With their families and people they know, they are loving, affectionate, gentle, and sweet. They tend to get along well with children, other dogs in the family, and other pets in the family. Because of their protective nature, it is important to properly train and socialize an English Mastiff Mix. They will be naturally suspicious of strangers, but will warm up once introduced as long as they are well-socialized. Although the breeder should have started some training and socialization, it is up to you to continue to train and socialize a puppy once you get them home. English Mastiffs are moderately adaptable dogs. Although they are a better fit for homes with room to run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough attention and exercise. These big dogs also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. They are very sensitive to heat, but can handle colder climates well. If the other parent is also moderately adaptable, then you should be able to expect the same in an English Mastiff Mix. But, the other parent breed will introduce their own potential quirks and traits that could affect adaptability. So, you want to make sure you have a conversation with the breeder about them. Are mixed-breed dogs healthier than purebred dogs? Just as a mix could inherit none of the health conditions common to their parent breeds, they could also inherit all of them or some combination of them. From the English Mastiff side, potential health concerns to be aware of in an English Mastiff Mix include progressive retinal atrophy, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, luxating patella , and cystinuria. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing issues to puppies, so make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents. Because the English Mastiff is one of the dogs breeds at risk for bloat, the same is true for an English Mastiff Mix. The risk may be reduced depending on the other parent breed, but you will still want to be aware of bloat in dogs. The more you know, the more you can reduce the risk and the sooner you can get help if it starts to occur. Although English Mastiffs are intelligent and pick up on things quickly, they can be stubborn. That, plus their protective instinct and size, can be a challenge for first-time dog owners. Puppy training classes are recommended for them. The other parent breed could make an English Mastiff Mix easier or more difficult to train. So, you want to ask the breeder about them and be prepared to enroll in obedience classes or enlist the help of a professional trainer. An English Mastiff Mix could inherit a coat similar to one of their parents or one that is a mix of both of them. Should they inherit the Mastiff coat, they will shed moderately year-round and heavier as seasons change. They will require weekly brushing, regular checking and cleaning of facial folds, and a bath as needed. Weekly ear checks with careful ear cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. This can help prevent painful dental diseases later in life. Brushing daily or using an enzyme toothpaste in addition to regular cleanings at the vet is ideal dental care for dogs. English Mastiffs tend to sit in a low to moderate energy range. Daily walks plus some playtime are usually enough for them. Even after puppies finish growing and their bones are done developing, you will still need to take it easy with an English Mastiff as they tire and overheat easily. If the other parent breed also sits in a low to moderate range, then you should be able to expect something similar in an English Mastiff Mix. However, if the other parent breed is a high-energy dog, then you will need to be prepared for the potential of a high-energy English Mastiff Mix. The other parent breed can have a big effect on this, especially if they are the mother. So, make sure you ask the breeder about them. An English Mastiff generally lives for years. Although the other parent breed may affect this slightly, you should be able to expect a similar life span in an English Mastiff Mix. Featured English Mastiff Mix Article.

Ann Dowd as Dr. The site's critical consensus reads, "Pet owners should love it, but Marley and Me is only sporadically successful in wringing drama and laughs from its scenario. Fox has a winner here, likely to be irresistible to almost everyone but cats.Animated and emotionally accessible, Aniston comes off better here than in most of her feature films, and Wilson spars well with her, even if, in the film's weaker moments, he shows he's on less certain ground with earnest material than he is with straight-faced impertinence. Dog lovers won't care, and that basically is the audience for the film. From Fox's standpoint, it may be enough. As directed by David Frankel, though, it's also something more: a disarmingly enjoyable, wholehearted comic vision of the happy messiness of family life. Things could get mushier or sillier, but Frankel and screenwriters Scott Frank and Don Roos—who usually handle grittier material—decline to play the easy, crowd-pleasing game. Their faith in Grogan's simple tale of loyalty among people and pets is unique, and it pays off. It's so warmhearted, you'll want to run out and hug the nearest big, sloppy mutt. And those who endorse this belief will enjoy this shaggy dog story. The anecdotal structure does not make for a gripping movie. For one thing, there's no conflict, unless you count the tension between a guy and his untrainable pooch. Yet Marley boasts animal magnetism. But often very funny and occasionally very moving.

It is highly recommended to understand the underlying cause in order to effectively solve the problem. Why is my Labrador not putting on weight? Labradors are known for their large structure and are not meant to be skinny. Therefore, if you notice your Labrador is skinny, it is likely that there is an underlying issue. As a Labrador owner, it is important to understand the actual reasons behind sudden weight loss. Some of the primary and common causes include: 1. This would be the case if your Labrador has been skinny since puppyhood and has not suddenly become thin. When you are providing the appropriate amount of food, and there are no other issues, then a skinny appearance may not be a cause for concern. Diet If your Labrador is not gaining weight, you should consider consulting with a veterinarian and replacing its regular diet with a healthier one. It is possible that you are not providing the appropriate amount or quality of food, which is causing your Labrador to become skinny over time. Before offering meals to your Labrador, make sure that it is not allergic to any specific food item. Exercise Labradors require a lot of daily exercises. If you are underfeeding them then they will lose too much weight. Discuss with your vet how much you should feed your lab for their exercise level. Illness This is the first reason that comes to mind for many dog parents when they notice weight loss in their Labrador. While illness can be a cause in some conditions, it is not always the case. If you notice any physical signs of pain or disease, it is important to schedule a visit with the vet without delay. Stress As we know, Labrador Retrievers are a social breed and are more prone to separation anxiety or stress if not given proper attention. It is possible that your Labrador is experiencing some pressure and this mental condition is preventing it from gaining weight. Often, fear and new surroundings can cause stress in Labradors. How thin should labs be? Dog owners may feel concerned if their Labrador is too skinny. If the ribs and vertebrae of your Labrador are visible, it is an indication that your Labrador is skinnier than average. Before introducing any medication or special food, it is important for dog owners to know the ideal weight for their Labrador. The ideal weight for male and female Labradors will differ depending on their activity level and energy, but there are standards. For male Labradors, 60 to 80 lbs are considered the ideal weight. If your Labrador is skinnier than this weight, it is considered too skinny. For female Labradors , 55 to 70 lbs are the ideal weight. If a female Labrador weighs less than this, it is considered too skinny and weak. What to feed a dog to gain weight? A skinny Labrador is not a cause for concern when there are no severe underlying diseases. You can easily fatten up your dog with some good practices. The key is to focus on their diet and exercise routine. Feeding your Labrador at regular intervals will help. Sweet potato and pumpkin Sweet potatoes and pumpkin are healthy ways to help your dog gain weight. They can increase the amount of fat and fiber in their meals and improve their digestive system. You can also give them canned versions of these foods, but be sure to monitor the quantity as too much can cause your Labrador to become overweight. Regular exercise There is a misconception that exercise is only for weight loss, but it is crucial for achieving the right weight goal for your Labrador. It is highly recommended to exercise your Labrador regularly to maintain a healthy weight. Provide fresh food It would be beneficial to replace the dry kibble of your Labrador with fresh food as it has a stronger scent that is more appealing to dogs. This way, your dog will eat properly and not be thin anymore. If you choose to provide fresh food such as vegetables to your Labrador, make sure it is not spoiled. It is also recommended to serve warm food rather than cold or frozen food. Proper routine Food is processed differently by dogs than by humans, however, the two are quite similar. Individuals who eat within a couple of hours before bed, for example, have a higher probability of gaining weight. Eating just before bed prompts the body to store the nutrients as fat. Serve your dog with eggs Eggs are the best food for dogs when you want them to gain weight. Eggs are rich in fats, and protein, and serve the dog with amino acids. The presence of fatty acids is not only healthy for the body but also for the hair and skin of your Labrador. Additionally, eggs contain many nutrients and are easy to digest as a snack. Choosing food rich in eggs is also a good option when you want your Labrador to fatten up. There is a wide range of recipes to make rice for dogs when you want them to fatten up. However, dogs cannot rely on rice alone as it is not rich in protein and nutrition, but you can serve it with other meals. Providing rice as a snack food will boost the overall weight gain process of your Labrador. Are Labs Naturally Skinny? The shape of a Labrador Retriever is iconic and easily called to mind for most of us. That they all mostly fit the same template is due to a clear description of the ideal Labrador conformation set out in their breed standard. It also requires Labs to have a moderately wide chest, and be short coupled which means the distance from their ribs to their pelvis is relatively short, compared to dogs on average. These features have the combined effect of making the Labrador look more naturally heavy and bulky, than thin and gangly. This is partly due to natural variation in size, and lifestyle factors. Different Labrador Shapes: American vs English Breeding choices and different opinions about how the ideal Labrador looks on either side of the Atlantic has led to two distinct types of Lab — English and American. They both belong to the same breed, but English Labs tend to be broader, stockier, and more heavy set. Whilst American Labs tend to be taller, longer, and slimmer looking. In the U. A smaller proportion belong to the English type. So the general perception of Labrador body shape in the U. The American Kennel Club describes the ideal weight of Labs in working condition as approximately 65 to 80 lbs for males and approximately 55 to 70 lbs for females. But around 70 to 80 lbs for a male and 60 to 70 lbs for a female is typical. This is where overall body condition comes in. Labradors at a healthy weight have a discernible waist from above, and from the side their belly is tucked up slightly higher than their chest. Vets also examine body condition by touch — applying pressure over the ribs to assess how much fat is covering them, for example. Dogs in healthy condition have ribs which can be easily felt under a thin layer of fat. Overall body condition is a better way of identifying whether your dog is at a healthy weight than putting them on the scales alone, because it works regardless of what sex your Lab is, how tall they are, and whether they are big or small in stature generally. Even using a body condition score chart, we tend to underestimate their size. In fact, only half of us ever get it right! However, if you can see any of these changes in your dog it is possible that they are underweight: Visible ribs, vertebrae or pelvic bones. Or being able to feel any of those bones immediately under the skin with no fat covering them at all. Loss of muscle mass. The underline of their body the shape of their ribs and belly sideways on following an S-like curve. In ideal condition, the underline of adult Labradors slopes up towards the hindquarters, but in a straight line. If any of these apply to your Lab, we recommend asking a vet to check them over. One is not eating enough calories to replace all the energy they burn in a day. Other reasons include parasitic infection such as leashmaniasis and parvovirus cancer kidney disease and hereditary muscle wasting conditions such as muscular dystrophy, and myopathy. And as you can easily imagine, none of these are treated as simply as by giving the dog more calories in their diet! However, being too skinny during their growing months can also have a damaging effect on things like bone development. Sometimes the simplest way of doing this is by overfeeding their usual diet a little every day, until they reach a healthy body condition. But your vet might also recommend switching to a more energy rich diet. All Labs should have an owner that pays attention to their welfare so closely, and cares about them so much. The truth is that a lot of dogs we perceive as being underweight are actually in a healthy condition. A vet will be able to determine whether they are really too skinny, and if so why, and how to safely fatten them up. Readers Also Liked. Q: What is a healthy weight for a Labrador Retriever? english bulldog price puppy - Crate training will have many benefits for your bulldog, including protecting him from household hazards and reducing his separation anxiety. It should be either 24 x 30 inches 61 x 76 cm or 24 x 36 inches 61 x 91 cm for a French bulldog, and either 42 x 30 inches x 76 cm or 42 x 36 inches x 91 cm for an American bulldog. This will allow you to increase the crate space as your puppy grows into an adult. The crate should be a place of safety and comfort for your bulldog. Place his favorite blanket and toys in the crate. You can also place a quilt or sheet over the crate to make it feel like a cozy den. A bowl would preferable, since he wouldn't be able to pull it out of the crate very easily. Leave the door open during the early stages of crate training so he can explore the crate at his leisure. Once your bulldog is comfortable entering the crate on his own, work on closing its door behind him. Start with closing the door for only a few seconds and then letting him out. If he starts whining or crying, wait until he calms down before opening the door. When he can handle a few seconds, close the door, leave the room, and return after random lengths of time e. Remember that puppies cannot hold their bladders for very long, so you should not leave your puppy bulldog in the crate for long time periods. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source When you are home, spend time with your bulldog while he is in the crate. Bulldogs are friendly and sociable dogs; interacting with your bulldog will keep him from getting lonely. Always remember that the crate is a place of safety and comfort, not punishment. Your bulldog should always have a positive association with the crate. Image used with permission by copyright holder How long does it take to potty train an English bulldog? Training an English bulldog to obey any command takes time and effort. Just like some human children learn new skills quickly, some dogs pick up new commands with ease. On the flip side, some dogs — like some children — require a bit more time before they master a new ability. A housebroken puppy makes for a clean, happy home When your bulldog puppy reaches the 12 to 16 week mark , you can begin potty training in earnest. It takes approximately four to six months to completely potty train a bulldog puppy, though the process may last a shorter — or longer — duration depending on your dog. Simple training sessions, such as teaching your fur baby not to chew on your shoes or engage in aggressive play, can begin around the 12 to week mark. Image used with permission by copyright holder How do I discipline my English bulldog puppy? Disciplining your puppy can be difficult. What they do know is that their pet parent is frightening them , which can actually lead them to misbehave more often than they already do. So, how should you discipline your puppy? If that fails, redirect his attention using a noise device like a shake can. Some puppies become anxious in response to loud noises. If your dog is one of them, discontinue your use of the shake can and switch to an alternative method, such as distracting your pup from chewing on your shoes with a pet-safe chew toy. Image used with permission by copyright holder Training any dog requires consistency, time, and effort. Even notoriously stubborn breeds like English bulldogs respond to firm rules, a strict schedule, and being rewarded with lots of praise and affection. Bulldogs are more likely to be deaf than other breeds, so you may need to teach him using hand signals. Editors' Recommendations. Easy Bulldog Training Step-by-Step Guide Bulldog training may seem daunting when you first get that adorable puppy, that is why this guide will break down the process in simple and easy to follow steps. The secret to a well-behaved bulldog is to start with training as early as you adopt him. Early training helps the puppy better develop his brain and habits potty training, leash training, socialization and more! Bulldogs as pets are a great choice because they are a happy and relaxed breed. This was a cruel sport that was, fortunately, banned almost years ago. The breed retains its strength but has become a calm and amusing breed. I have personally worked with many bulldogs and non of them were stubborn at all. The stubbornness of a dog comes from not understanding its owner. The training methods outlined below will help you communicate with your bulldog successfully! As you train, keep an eye for some common British bulldog health problems like respiratory problems, overheating and skin allergies. Bulldog training can be fun and easy! Bulldog Puppy Socialization Socialization is the single most important exercise you need to do with your puppy and you have only a few months to work on it. It involves showing your puppy the world he will be living in and making positive associations with the things, animals and people in it. Every single new event, person, animal, object or sound your puppy encounters should be followed by a treat. This will make every association positive and you puppy will learn no to be fearful of new things. Learn more about socialization exercises for your bulldog puppy dog. Bulldog Potty Training Probably the second most important task is to teach your bulldog puppy to potty in one place or outside. Puppies are very smart and can learn simple things very easily. Potty training requires patience and perseverance. The main idea is to create a schedule or habit for your puppy to follow. A bulldog puppy can hold his bladder 1 hour for every month of life tops! If he has accidents, simply clean them up with an enzymatic cleaner and move on, do not punish your bulldog. Learn more about potty training schedules and techniques to teach your bulldog to potty outside in as little as one week! Teaching your bulldog puppy to moderate his biting Puppies are curious creatures and they like to explore the world with their mouth! This means that your puppy may want to bite your hands, shoes, pants, couch, table legs and even walls! There are two important things to teach your puppy about mouthing: To bite gently without hurting you , To chew only his own toys. Crate training your bulldog puppy can also help prevent home destruction and teach your puppy that the only things available for biting are his own dog toys. They are smart dogs that can learn as much as any other dog breed. Follow these steps to teach your bulldog the basics of obedience training. Positive Bulldog Training Positive bulldog training is about rewarding your dog for doing something right and ignoring your dog when he does something wrong. Positive training also involves actively teaching your pooch the things you would like him to do instead of expecting him to know on his own. There are two training methods that are very useful to teach your furry friend obedience: luring and capturing. That is why punishing or rewarding a dog for something he did in the past does not work. To help with timing, dog trainers use a marker word or a clicker. A marker word is used to mark the moment the animal did something correct and it is followed by a treat. The use of the word helps you have better timing, which in turn helps your bulldog understand what you are rewarding for faster. To teach your pooch the meaning of a marker word, all you need to do is say it and follow with the delivery of a treat. Good boy! Practice repetitions, 2 to 3 times a day and you will notice that your pooch will start responding when he hears that magic word! Bulldog training STEP 2: Teaching your bulldog its name One of the most important things to teach your bulldog is its name. This is always neglected, you name your bulldog, then assume he will understand that is they way you call him. Unfortunately, this is not true and recognizing its name is one of the most important things a dog should know. If your puppy doesn't look at you when you call him, how is he going to do what you ask? Teaching a dog its name is super easy, here are the steps: Say your bulldog's name As soon as he looks at you, say your marker word or click! Immediately afterwards, give him a treat! Repeat many times and in different places and situations. Bulldog training STEP 3: Teaching your bulldog basic obedience commands Now comes the fun part, training your bulldog to respond to basic commands. Contact Us How to house train a English bulldog puppy the right way The easiest way to go about house training your new bulldog puppy is by utilizing a crate. Dogs are and always have been den and pack animals, they naturally and instinctively prefer the shelter of a den. Therefore most dogs will not urinate or defecate in their crate, which is why it is such an invaluable tool for housebreaking. The first thing to understand, though, is the need for repetition and consistency. Begin by purchasing the appropriate size crate. Think den not condo! It should be small with just enough room for your bulldog to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It is not an exercise pen. The use of too large a crate will encourage your bulldog puppy to use a small portion of it for a bed and the rest of it as a place to potty. We use the Midwest Life Stages crates. Leave the crate door open and allow your bulldog puppy to come and go as he pleases. Keep his favorite treats handy that you only use for the crate. It gives the puppy a nice reason to go in and creates a positive experience. At mealtimes, feed your bulldog in the crate with the door closed. At night, just before bedtime take your bulldog puppy out to potty. Put your puppy in his crate and shut the door. For the first 3 nights set your alarm for 3 hours. Set him down and wait. When he goes potty, praise him and put him back in his crate. Set your alarm for 3 more hours and repeat. After three days, if it has been successful and there have been no accidents, move to 4-hour intervals. After three more nights, you have hopefully taught your puppy that you will be there to take him outside when he has to go. If there have been no accidents you can then start going to bed and waiting until your puppy wakes you up to potty. It is important to respond and take him out immediately if he wakes during the night. In the morning, as soon as you wake up, immediately take your puppy out. By house time, I mean freedom to move about but always in the same room as you so that you can keep a constant eye on him. We use baby gates to block off access to other rooms. During the day repeat the above process and continue to take the puppy out every hour. If he does not do his business put him back in his crate and try again in 15 minutes. NEVER let a bulldog puppy in training out of your site. Use the crate as you would a playpen for a human child. Even if you leave the room for a minute, either take the puppy with you or put him in the crate. If you turn your back for 60 seconds and your puppy has an accident, then you messed up and made a mistake and have missed the opportunity to make a correction and teach the puppy. Do not rub his nose in it and do not use any physical correction! When he goes outside give him lots of praise. Use an odor neutralizer. When an accident occurs it is important to completely remove the odor, otherwise your puppy will gravitate back to the area to relieve himself again. You can buy the neutralizers from most any pet store. Do not use household cleaners, most contain ammonia which will attract him back to the same spot. A Few Tips to Help You Succeed Puppies will need to go potty first thing in the morning, after every meal, as soon as they wake up from naps and just before bedtime. A few hours before bedtime take up his water, this will help buy you a litter more time between potty breaks at night. If you see him smelling a particular spot or circling around, pick him up and take him outside. Keep your puppy on a regular feeding schedule and take away his food between meals. Puppies may not initially like the crate. Some will cry, whine, bark and drive you crazy the first couple of days. Doing so will teach your puppy that if he barks or whines long enough he will get rewarded and this will only encourage the behavior. Training an English bulldog puppy takes time, consistency and patience. Dogs function best with structure, routine, and clear expectations. Share this post.
