The peak of Atlantic hurricane season is here which is why it's important to take some time to reflect on disaster preparedness. As unlikely as it may seem, a disaster can strike at any moment. Unfortunately, pets are sometimes unintentionally left out of their owners' disaster preparedness plans which makes it difficult to know what to do with them during an emergency. Luckily, you can plan ahead for your pets using these tips: Listen to your veterinarian Make sure your pet wears a collar with up to date information on it, get them microchipped, and have them vaccinated. These recommendations will come in handy during a disaster and help you avoid any potential pitfalls, such as being unable to get into a shelter with an unvaccinated pet or losing them during an evacuation. If possible, take your pet's medical records with you and attach their rabies tag to their collar. A tail in a natural position, level or lower than the body and wagging either slowly or crazily shows a dog that is happy and excited. However… A tail held high in the air and wagging side to side slowly and purposefully shows a dog feeling dominant, threatening or aggressive. If held high, you should perhaps be a little cautious. Reading Your Golden Retrievers Emotions From Their Body Language After looking at how different body parts are used to express different thoughts and feelings, we now need to look at the dog as a whole. We need to see how they hold their body in general, what postures they use as well as their facial expressions and tail to show how they truly feel. The same facial expressions could have a very different meaning when read in conjunction with the general posture of their whole body. As a general rule a dog can only really do three things with their bodies: Make themselves appear larger and more threatening. Make themselves look smaller and less threatening. Hold themselves naturally, be calm and relaxed. Their tail, eyes, ears and mouth all held naturally and if their tail is wagging at all it will be at body level or lower. They will simply look confident and relaxed. Excited If your Golden is excited they will look happy but a little less relaxed, more tense and alert. An excited dog may be wagging their tail so much that their entire rear end will be moving and not just the tail. When excited, most dogs also bark in short high-pitched little barks. A play bow is when a dog drops into a position with their front legs stretched out in front of them, legs and chest low to the ground but with their bum held high in the air. They will usually emit a high-pitched and excited bark as well. They will usually have their mouth open, their eyes open and alert and their ears held forward and high as much as a golden can! Besides a play bow, a dog wanting to play will be full of energy, bouncing and jumping around while barking in a high pitch begging for attention. They will often paw people, or knock into them and run, hoping to be chased or played with in some way. Alert And Ready For Action An alert dog stands up tall, weight centered on all fours, staring at what has their attention with ears up and forward. Their tail will usually be still and held at body level or higher, their eyes somewhere between normal and wide open. An alert dog will look slightly intense and highly concentrated. Angry And Aggressive An angry and aggressive dog will make themselves look as large and scary as possible. They will stand tall, their head held high, tail high and stiff or possibly moving slowly and meaningfully side to side. They may also snarl, growl, and sound warning barks as well curling their lips to bear their teeth. An angry and aggressive dog is quite unmistakable as it looks quite frightening which is exactly the point. If you see aggression in a dog you should simply slowly turn sideways and walk away as they could bite. Make no sudden moves, just move away slowly to defuse the situation. Unmistakably and the biggest sign of being scared is their tail tucked extremely low between their legs, under their body. In extreme cases of fear a dog may also shake and tremble. Submissive A submissive dog is trying to show obedience, passivity and a lack of aggression. To achieve this they make themselves look small, body low to the ground and their tail held low although it may be wagging side to side. Their necks will be low, but their muzzle may be pointing up instead of down into the floor. Sometimes a dog will roll on their backs to show their sensitive undersides as an ultimate show of a mixture of submission and trust. Final Thoughts Learning canine body language is essential if you want to understand how your Golden is feeling at any given moment. Why would you want to do this? Traditionally, the first litter to leave Hektor Haus should start with an A. The second litter should start with a B, and so on. What will you do with them the first 8 weeks? We have an amazing program for the pups. We have children, and Aura has access to the pups at all time. We have chickens and other animals here. They will have experience absolutely everything the pros recommend, and more. Vacuum cleaners, misc noises, TV, radio, the occasional cat, etc. The first week we sleep right beside the whelping box and assist with any issues that may arise. This is just impossible to find these days and the value it adds is just incredible. Will they have had shots? The mother gets prescribed vaccinations and wormers during her pregnancy as prescribed by the Theriogenology Doctors and Clinical Technicians at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine for maximum antibodies coming from mom at birth. Moms gets wormer while pregnant and the puppies get it as prescribed by the veterinarians at Jordan Lake Animal Hospital. We do not punish dogs at all. After 5 weeks of age we run them outside as soon as they wake up, as soon as they eat, and many times throughout the day. We reward the good and ignore the bad. These pups will have the best head start available. Should I crate train my puppy? This is up to you. It is a great tool for potty training. We will have an open crate in with them and they will be familiar with them. If you will have your puppy in a crate please start as close to 8 weeks of age as possible. Our adult dogs are very comfortable going in to their crate, even if we only use them once a month, as they used them while they were younger. A crate should not ever be used as a punishment. Please read up on crate training if you would like to know more about it. It is an excellent way to potty train and our GSD loves her crate. Will my puppy cry at night? All puppies go through some sort of anxiety when they have left their mom. Expect crying or barking, especially at night. When they stop is the time to praise them or give a treat. You can leave a TV or radio on near them so that they can hear human voices during this process. The puppy must learn that you will not always be around. This can be sad, annoying, or even make you crazy. Patience is the key, you will need to wait it out and never punish the dog for this behavior. Reward when they have stopped crying and these brilliant dogs will get it. Each puppy will come with their own blanket or towel that smells like their mother and siblings. What do I feed my puppy? We will submit the paperwork to HomeAgain with your information. Since we pay the vet for this service they must submit the paperwork, we can not give it to you to submit. You will be given the microchip number which is already implanted in them. It is a simple RFID chip. If for some reason they are lost and sent to a pound or a vet, when they scan the lost dog, the microchip appears on their screen. The is then typed into a database which displays your information. Can I register my pup with the AKC? It is not necessary and is optional. We are able to register the litter. The litter will be registered. It is up to each individual owner to register the puppy if they want to, we can not do it for you. You get a neat certificate in the mail if you do this. How do I pick my puppy? This really confuses a lot of people. Some people want to come and squeeze their toes. Some people fall in love with the color of their collar. Sometimes if we have you come out here the one in the corner that is asleep and ignoring you with dookie stuck all over his coat is actually the best pup for you. We spend an enormous amount of time with them and get to know each one very well. To be clear, we have the puppies best interest in mind. On the A litter, 7 pups went to homes to be companions. Will they be potty trained? Heck no! Since we were stupid enough to raise them indoors, starting around 5 weeks of age, we run them outside every morning when they wake up. We run them out every time they eat. We run them outside after naps. We run them outside in between. We run them outside when we sanitize their area, which is about 8 times per day. Do you punish them? When they bite us we simply yelp and move them to the side. We offer praise when they do good and ignore the bad. They are a truly clean slate when you get them. Please note puppies have a memory of about 0. Scolding them for something that happened even 10 seconds ago teaches them absolutely nothing. The very last thing you want to do with a puppy is create fear of humans, especially a GSD. They need to retain their confidence. What if my puppy is afraid of something?
