Every bite of food will be detrimental or beneficial to this breed's health. Overview Food is fuel both for a growing Boxer pup and large strong adult Boxer dogs. The type of food that you offer for both meals and snacks has a direct affect on your Boxer's health both now and in the future. Also of importance is a feeding schedule and making sure that you offer the proper amounts. This section will cover everything you need to know in order to provide a well-balanced, nutritious diet for your Boxer puppy, adult, or senior. How Often to Feed a Boxer Puppy or Dog Let's look at a summary and then the details: Puppies under 12 weeks: free-fed Puppies and up to the 2-year mark: 3 meals per day Adults 2 years and up: 1 to 2 meals per day Young pups 8 to 12 weeks old: Very young pups, and particularly those that are a bit underweight, should be free-fed for at least the first month at their new home. This is the method of having fresh food accessible at all times. For a pup still trying to gain their bearings, you may need to lead them to their bowl throughout the day. Note that food should be thrown out and the bowl washed and then refilled several times per day as opposed to just topping off the food since pups may not be interested in stale food. Growing pup to 2 year mark: It's best to get a Boxer onto a feeding schedule as soon as possible. Schedules of anything feeding, exercise, sleep time, etc. Young Boxers often struggle a bit to fill out and during the 1 to 2-year mark Boxers can go through a 'skinny phase', so 3 meals per day, plus snacks, can work well during this time. Adults 2 years and up: Most adult Boxers that have reached their final adult weight and height do well with 2 meals per day, plus snacks. If snacks are regular and of substance, a Boxer may be perfectly content with 1 main meal per day. Note that this breed is prone to bloat, so you want to avoid letting a Boxer get so hungry that he rapidly gulps his food down. If that is the case, increase the frequency of meals or use a slow-feed bowl; stainless-steel is best, something like Mr. How Much to Feed a Boxer Puppy or Dog The exact serving size that is appropriate for each Boxer varies and depends mainly on age and current weight but also is affected by activity level, health status, type of food wet vs dry , and individual metabolism. This said, there are general guidelines: Puppies usually require about 55 calories for each pound of body weight. Young pups might eat a bit over a cup a day, older pups can eat up to 3 cups a day. Adults need fewer calories per pound of body weight than their younger counterparts, about .Depending on an adult Boxer dog's size, food is usually in the 3 to 5 cup per day range. To know exactly how much to give your Boxer, know your dog's weight. Don't guess since that can be wildly off. Then, look at the feeding guidelines on the bag of kibble; these are listed by age and weight and are usually pretty spot on. Dry Kibble vs Wet Canned Though many Boxers may prefer wet canned food, dry kibble is better to maintain healthy teeth and gum and a strong jaw. You'll still have to provide some level of at-home dental care , but the crunch of a hard kibble will work to some extent to remove plaque. Additionally, dry food seems to keep the stools firmer and healthier. If your Boxer is a finicky eater and balks at dry food, try mixing in just a bit of canned stick with the same brand or add just a bit of water or low-sodium chicken or beef broth. Grain vs Grain-free It's wasn't that long ago that putting a dog on a grain-free diet wasn't much of a big deal. Some grains, especially those with gluten, can cause excessive gas , upset stomach, and other issues. And, some dogs are allergic to wheat or gluten which can manifest as itching and other skin problems. But recently, a suspected link between certain grain-free dog foods and dilated cardiomyopathy DCM, a canine heart disease caused veterinary experts to take pause. And, since Boxers are one of the breeds prone to DCM, it's important to understand where things are on this. Though it was first thought that any grain-free diet may be the cause, the current thought is that it is a BEG diet, meaning boutique small specialty brands that have exotic meats non-traditional meats like alligator, kangaroo, bison, venison, etc. Many more studies need to be done for conclusive answers to be found. For now, it is recommended to offer healthy grains and this can be done while avoiding gluten if your Boxer has an issue with it. Navigating the Many Choices of Dog Foods What to Avoid: Many brands are guilty of having at least one of these elements that you do not want your Boxer's food to have: No grains at all. Until conclusive studies are complete, play it safe and offer a kibble with some level of healthy grains unless the veterinarian recommends otherwise Boxer needs to be on a specific grain-free diet, etc. Synthetic preservatives. These can be toxic. Butylated hydroxyanisole BHA , butylated hydroxytoluene BHT , and ethoxyquin, just to name a few, are linked to behavioral issues, organ damage, and some forms of cancer. Artificial coloring. Common dyes like Yellow 5 and 6 and Blue 2 are linked to behavioral and health issues. Artificial flavor enhancers. MSG is one of the worst, it is linked to anxiety, rapid heartbeat, and breathing issues. Generic animal digest, meats, oils, or fats. When anything is listed as 'animal', it is derived from a 4-D animal: dead, dying, diseased or disabled animals and can literally be any meat from any animal at all: minks from mink farms, roadkill, zoo animals, expired meats from supermarkets and butcher shops, etc. Fillers are cheap ingredients that are put into dog food to bulk it up but they have little to no nutritional value. The 'food' goes right through their system; a dog will eat but be hungry again soon afterward and this is one cause of coprophagia eating feces. These are the animal parts that are not fit for human consumption and includes such things as spinal tissue, lungs, spleens, hooves, tails, undeveloped eggs, etc. Made outside North America since meats from overseas can be questionable. The kibble will be preserved using a vitamin blend often listed as mixed tocopherals and will be naturally flavored and colored. Some level of grains. Grains that are generally well-tolerated include rice, oatmeal, and quinoa. Wholesome real meats, veggies, and fruits. Some ingredients sourced from Norway are fine; this country has very strict guidelines. If you are not sure what is in your Boxer's food, investigate it. Know about grain content and the presence or lack of additives and subpar ingredients. Recommended Dog Food for Boxers Please note that the following recommendations are formulas with some level of healthy grains; if you did not read the previous ' Grain vs Grain-free ' you may wish to do so before continuing on. This meets all of the requirements of what you're looking for. There are no synthetic preservatives; vitamins are used instead shown as mixed tocopherals. The grains in this formula are generally very well tolerated: quinoa technically a seed , oatmeal, and barley. There are 3 different recipes to choose from: beef, chicken, or lamb. Other ingredients include peas, salmon, carrots, apples, blueberries, and flaxseed. There are good levels of glucosamine chondroitin vital for joint health , antioxidants, and omega fatty acids important for skin and coat health. There are no by-products, fillers, or generic meats or oils and this is sourced and made in the USA. For this one, the base is chicken a very classic tasty protein that most dogs love , along with oatmeal, brown rice, ground barley, peas, flaxseed, carrots, tomato pomace, spinach, sweet potatoes, apples, and blueberries. All other ingredients shown on the label are either vitamins and minerals or natural preservatives. This has no wheat, corn, soy, meat by-products, artificial flavors, colors or preservatives, and this is made in the USA. This brand offers a top-quality formula that is gluten-free. There is no wheat, corn, soy, by-products, artificial flavors, artificial colors, or chemical preservatives. The base is chicken and brown rice and other ingredients include white rice, oatmeal, rice bran, avocado, flax seed, herring, and kelp. It has good levels of omega fatty acids and antioxidants. The one trade-off for having it be gluten-free is that it does not contain any fruit; however, it does have all required vitamins and minerals and you can always offers a small amount of fresh fruit as snacks. Homemade Vs Commercial Commercial dog food is convenient and, if you choose a superior brand, it will ensure that your Boxer receives all needed nutrients and is on a well-rounded and well-balanced diet. And, home cooked food gives you complete control over what your Boxer eats and does not eat and can be tweaked to satisfy a finicky eater. So, there are pros and cons to each. Whether you opt for a top-quality kibble or you use good cuts of meat and fish and fresh produce in homemade meals, neither option is super-cheap. Because, of course, you get what you pay for. But, if you buy in bulk and lean toward frozen vegetables and fruits, home cooking may be a bit less expensive. That said, when you prepare meals at home, you'll need to offer a good daily vitamin and mineral supplement even good brands of kibble need to add this in because it's nearly impossible for a dog to receive all nutrients just from food alone. Some of the foods that can be incorporated into meals include: Proteins: Chicken, turkey, veal, beef, fish mackeral, haddock, salmon, whitefish, cod, and others , eggs, and certain beans kidney, lima Vegetables: Carrots, broccoli in moderation , potato, sweet potato, sugar snap peas, green beans, spinach Fruits: Blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, pumpkin Grains: Quinoa, oatmeal, rice Related Articles: Best Snacks, Chews, and Treats for a Boxer - A great rundown of the difference between these 3 things and top recommendations. The Boxer is a medium-sized to large-sized dog known for its smooth coat and distinctive head shape. This breed was originally developed to hunt large prey like wild boar, deer, even bears — it was bred from the Mastiff and the Bulldog to give it a strong jaw and a powerful bite. Despite its hunting background, the Boxer is a very friendly and social breed — in fact, it is consistently ranked among the top 10 most popular breeds in the United States according to AKC registration statistics. In addition to being a very friendly and loyal breed, the Boxer is also playful and energetic. Because this breed loves to be active it needs a commercial diet that can support its energy requirements. Below you will find some basic information about the nutritional needs for medium-sized dogs as well as some special considerations for the Boxer breed in particular. Adult males can stand anywhere between 22 and 25 inches tall and females can grow up to 24 inches tall. Male Boxers typically weigh 65 to 70 pounds at maturity and females can weigh up to 60 pounds. While you may be able to feed your Boxer a medium-sized adult food formula while it is young, a full-grown Boxer will do better on a large-breed adult formula. Large-breed dogs have slower metabolisms than small-breed dogs so they require a commercial diet that is nutrient dense but not high in calories. Feeding your Boxer puppy a large-breed puppy formula will make sure that he gets the nutrients he needs to be healthy without giving him too many extra calories that will cause him to grow too quickly, putting excess strain on his developing bones and joints. Before considering the specific nutritional needs of large-breed dogs you need to understand the basics about dog nutrition. All dogs require a blend of protein, fat and carbohydrate in their diets as well as various vitamins and minerals. Carbohydrates provide a dog with vitamins and minerals as well as dietary fiber. Dogs do not require a specific amount of carbohydrate in their diet, but the carbs they do get should come from healthy, highly digestible sources like whole oats and brown rice. When it comes to feeding your Boxer you should select a high-quality commercial diet that is specially formulated for large-breed dogs. Because the Boxer is a fairly active breed, if you train your Boxer for hunting or other dog sports you might be able to feed him an active or working-breed formula. If he does, reduce the amount you are feeding him or switch back to a standard large-breed adult formula. Special Considerations for Boxers Again, while your Boxer puppy is young you will need to feed him a commercial diet specially formulated for large-breed puppies. Large-breed puppies grow more slowly than small-breed puppies and it takes them longer to reach their adult size. If they grow too fast it could put strain on their bones and joints which will increase the risk for musculoskeletal problems as an adult. Large-breed dogs have a high risk for bone and joint problems like hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Feeding your Boxer puppy a large-breed puppy formula will make sure that he gets the protein he needs to maintain lean muscle mass with enough fat for energy but not too much. Once your Boxer reaches his adult size you can feed him a commercial diet formulated for large-breed adults for the next few years. As your Boxer gets older, however, you may need to switch him to a senior dog formula to make sure he gets the supplements he needs to maintain healthy bones and joints. Large-breed dogs have a high risk for developing musculoskeletal problems as they age, so an older Boxer six years or older will benefit from a dog food that is supplemented with things like chondroitin and glucosamine. At all ages you need to be careful not only about how much your Boxer eats, but about how quickly he eats as well. Large-breed dogs have a high risk for gastric dilation volvulus, or bloat, which can occur if your dog swallows too much air as he eats or if he drinks too much water after a meal. This condition is very serious and can quickly become fatal so you need to be very careful. They come in lots of different sizes and colors Labradoodles vary greatly in size as this is dependent on the size of their parent breeds. They can be standard size with pups weighing around 45lb , medium around lb or miniature less than 25lb. Their coats can also be quite different from wavy or curly to wiry or even straight depending on how much poodle is passed down to them. They also come in a variety of colors including chocolate, cream, black, silver and a red apricot mix. They tend to be good dogs for allergy sufferers While there is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog , some breeds are less likely to bring on fits of coughs and sneezes. However, because they are a crossbreed and their coat is dependent on their mother and father, this may not be the case with all Labradoodles, so do check with the breeder first. While they may not shed often, they will still need to be brushed regularly. They are water babies Labradoodles love to swim, which is no surprise as both Poodles and Labrador Retrievers are water dogs. Of course, this can depend on the individual dog, but if they are exposed to water early on the breed generally loves to splash around and even dive into the deep end. They may have underlying health issues Wally Conron may have bred the first Labradoodle, but he is said to regret this decision as the crossbreed may have some underlying health issues inherited from their parent breeds. This is often due to unethical breeding, so make sure you do your research and check its breeding before you bring a Labradoodle home. However, be aware that these dogs need at least minutes of exercise a day. They need plenty of space and lots of walks, plus playtime with some of the best dog toys. Labradoodles are not a recognized breed While they may be super popular, Labradoodles are not recognized as a breed by the American Kennel Club. However, the International Australian Labradoodle Association, the Australian Labradoodle Association and the Australian Labradoodle Association of America are working to put together a breed standard and bring together Labradoodle breeders. Plus, the Oxford English Dictionary includes the word Labradoodle and the breed is also featured in the Australian edition of the classic board game Monopoly. Loyal and devoted: Labradoodles are loyal and devoted dogs that make great companions. They are always happy to see their owners and they love to cuddle. Versatile: Labradoodles are versatile dogs that can be trained for a variety of tasks, including therapy work, obedience, and agility. They can be expensive to purchase and maintain. They require regular grooming, especially if they have a curly coat. They are prone to some health problems, such as hip dysplasia and elbow dysplasia. Overall, Labradoodles are wonderful dogs that make great companions for people of all ages. If you are looking for a friendly, intelligent, and hypoallergenic dog, a Labradoodle may be a good choice for you. Labradoodle History Wally Conron, who was in charge of the breeding program for the Royal Guide Dogs Association of Australia, purposefully crossbred a Standard Poodle and Labrador Retriever in to develop the Labradoodle as a hypoallergenic guide dog. The first cross produced Sultan, a dog with a hypoallergenic coat, aptitude, intelligence, and personality suitable for being an effective guide dog. Sultan worked successfully with a woman in Hawaii. Other breeders saw the merit of crossing these two breeds, and the Labradoodle quickly rose in popularity like its Labrador Retriever parent. These dogs are often produced by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, but multigenerational breeding has begun in an attempt to produce a viable and recognizable breed. The Australian Labradoodle Association and the International Australian Labradoodle Association are taking steps to move this designer breed into registered breed status in the next few years. These groups have made great efforts to bring breeders together so that they are working to achieve the same standards through multigenerational breeding. Labradoodle Size The Labradoodle comes in three size variations, depending on the size of the Poodle used for the first-generation breeding. The three sizes are Standard, Medium, and Miniature. The Standard Labradoodle should be 22 to 24 inches in height for a male and 21 to 23 inches in height for a female, while both can range in weight from 50 to 65 pounds. The Medium Labradoodle should be 18 to 20 inches high for a male and 17 to 19 inches high for a female, with both weighing from 30 to 45 pounds. The average size for a Miniature Labradoodle is between 14 to 16 inches and 15 to 25 pounds. All of that said, there is a lot of variation in Labradoodle sizes. Some can be smaller or larger than expected. Labradoodle Personality The Labradoodle is an intelligent dog who can make the ideal family pet if properly trained. They are friendly and accept and treat everyone like their best friend. They can be gentle, but they can also be joyful, showing their happiness through exuberant jumping and playing. They also tend to be easygoing, since the Labradoodle was bred not to be aggressive. Temperament is affected by a number of factors, including heredity, training, and socialization. Puppies with nice temperaments are curious and playful, willing to approach people and be held by them. Meeting siblings, parents, or other relatives of the dog is also helpful for evaluating what a puppy will be like when they grow up. Socialization helps ensure that your Labradoodle puppy grows up to be a well-rounded dog. Enrolling them in a puppy kindergarten class is a great start. Inviting visitors over regularly, and taking them to busy parks, stores that allow dogs, and on leisurely strolls to meet neighbors will also help them polish their social skills. Here are a few conditions to watch out for: Ear Infections: These can plague Labradoodles because of their floppy ears. The ears trap moisture and should be regularly checked. X-ray screening is the most certain way to diagnose the problem. Either way, arthritis can develop as the dog ages. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : Similar to hip dysplasia, this is also a degenerative disease. The disease varies in severity: the dog could simply develop arthritis, or they could become lame. Treatment includes surgery, weight management, medical management, and anti-inflammatory medication. It can cause mild or severe seizures that may show themselves as unusual behavior—such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding—or even by falling down, limbs rigid, and losing consciousness. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Allergies: Allergies are a common ailment in dogs, and the Labradoodle is no exception. Treatment varies according to the cause and may include dietary restrictions, medications, and environmental changes. Diabetes Mellitus: This is a disorder in which the body cannot regulate blood sugar levels. The dog will lose weight because food is not being used efficiently. Symptoms of diabetes are excessive urination and thirst, increased appetite, and weight loss. Diabetes can be controlled by diet and the administration of insulin. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA : This is a family of eye diseases that involves the gradual deterioration of the retina. Early in the disease, affected dogs become night-blind; they lose sight during the day as the disease progresses. Many affected dogs adapt well to their limited or lost vision, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Hypothyroidism : This is a disorder of the thyroid gland. It is treated with medication and diet. They require about 30 to 60 minutes of exercise per day and would do better with a fenced yard in which to expel some energy. Some Labradoodles, especially in the first generation, can require even more exercise. The Labradoodle makes an excellent jogging companion but also needs some time off-leash to burn off steam. The Labradoodle is an intelligent and eager-to-please dog. Training should be easy as long as consistency and positive reinforcement are the methods. Socialize them from puppyhood, since they tend to hurl themselves headlong into canine situations without regard to the feelings of other dogs. This can lead to some problems if the unknown dog is aggressive. Despite their activity levels, a Labradoodle can adjust to living in suburban or city environments and can do well in rural settings. A crate is also a place where they can retreat for a nap. Crate training at a young age will help your Labradoodle accept confinement if they ever needs to be boarded or hospitalized. Never stick your Labradoodle in a crate all day long, however. Labradoodle Feeding Recommended daily amount: 1 to 2. NOTE: How much your adult dog eats depends on their size, age, build, metabolism, and activity level. It almost goes without saying that a highly active dog will need more than a couch potato dog. Keep your Labradoodle in good shape by measuring their food and feeding them twice a day rather than leaving food out all the time. First, look down at them. You should be able to see a waist. Then place your hands on their back, thumbs along the spine, with the fingers spread downward. You should be able to feel but not see their ribs without having to press hard. For more on feeding your Labradoodle, see our guidelines for buying the right food , feeding your puppy , and feeding your adult dog. Labradoodle Coat Color And Grooming Although a Labradoodle can have one of a range of coat types, the desired length is four to six inches. They have a single coat with hair ranging from straight to loose curls. There are three types of texture: The Hair coat, which is similar to fur in shedding breeds, is the least popular. Hair coats shed and usually have a normal doggy odor. This coat is seen in first generations, although breeders try to avoid it. The Fleece coat has a silky texture often described as an Angora goat texture. This coat ranges from straight to wavy. Labradoodles are considered to be non- to low shedders, especially those with a Fleece or Wool coat. Hair coats tend to shed just as they do in other breeds, ranging from very low to average shedding. The Labradoodle comes in a wide variety of colors. They can also have parti-colored coats, which consist of brindles, phantom, patched, or sable colors. Grooming requirements vary depending on the length and type of coat the dog has. Generally speaking, you can expect to brush a Labradoodle about once or twice per week. Some can be clipped or trimmed every six to eight weeks to keep the coat easy to maintain. Like Labs, Labradoodles can be prone to ear infections, so take a little extra time caring for their ears. Dry and clean them after a swim, and check them once a week for dirt, redness, or a bad odor that can indicate an infection. Then wipe them out weekly with a cotton ball dampened with gentle, pH-balanced ear cleaner to prevent problems. Daily brushing is even better if you want to prevent gum disease and bad breath. Dog toenails have blood vessels in them, and if you cut too far you can cause bleeding—and your dog may not cooperate the next time they see the nail clippers come out. Handle their paws frequently—dogs are touchy about their feet—and look inside their mouth. As you groom, check for sores, rashes, or signs of infection such as redness, tenderness, or inflammation on the skin, in the nose, mouth, and eyes, and on the feet. Eyes should be clear, with no redness or discharge. Your careful weekly exam will help you spot potential health problems early. Labradoodle Children And Other Pets The Labradoodle does well with children and can be an affectionate and gentle companion for any child. They can also be exuberant and might knock down smaller children, but they will love them with all their heart. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Labradoodles usually get along well with other dogs and pets. Like most dogs, they need training and socialization for optimum success at living with and visiting other animals. Labradoodle Rescue Groups Labradoodles are often brought home without any clear understanding of what goes into owning one. Many end up in the care of shelters or rescues because of this. It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Labradoodles because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Labrador Retriever or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. It's time to talk about Labradoodles. This combination Labrador retriever and poodle is an excellent family dog who's often sought out by allergy sufferers because of their minimal shedding. The ever-popular Labradoodle is immensely trainable and, unlike some dogs, a good fit for first-time dog owners. On the larger side, these pups can take up some space-but are great with kids and will adapt to their family's lifestyle. The standard version, which is a Lab bred with a standard-sized poodle, can grow to be about 24 inches tall and weigh up to 75 pounds. If you're searching for a dog on the smaller size, it's possible to also find mini Labradoodles, a hybrid of a Labrador retriever and a miniature poodle. The loving, loyal doodles are a fun addition to any family. They're prone to zoomies and more than happy to play with the baby. Labradoodles are healthy dogs and need exercise, though the amount of running, playing, or swimming might depend on their makeup of Labrador and poodle genes. But regardless of the genetic breakdown, you'll need to get used to trips to the groomer. These pups are hairy. A quick note: Labradoodles and Australian Labradoodles aren't the same. Australian Labradoodles are crosses between a poodle, Labrador retriever, and cocker spaniel. Appearance Like many Labradoodle characteristics, your dog's appearance will depend on the generation you're looking for. To illustrate: Martinez breeds F1 half Labrador, half poodle , F1b 75 percent poodle, 25 percent Lab , and F2 87 percent poodle, 13 percent Lab Labradoodles. The half-Lab F1s will have longer, wavier hair and will still shed, Martinez says. The F1bs and F2s will have more poodle-esque hair that's tighter, curlier, and generally won't shed. They'll often look like little teddy bears as puppies. Labradoodles are often thought of as hypoallergenic -even though no dog is truly an allergen-free animal-but generally the F1b and F2 generations are considered better options for some allergy sufferers. Martinez recommends people with allergies spend time with their puppy before they adopt. His customers are required to. They'll come in around inches tall, Martinez says. As for colors, Labradoodles run the gamut. You'll find them in black, white, cream, red, chocolate, or a mix of those colors. Taking after their poodle brethren, these fluffy boys and girls need to be brushed frequently , too. Temperament Martinez loves the dogs he breeds-he owns 10 himself-and was especially effusive about how Labradoodles act around people, families , and children , even kids who might not know exactly how to pet or interact with dogs "They love people," he says. But not only can these pups live with cats -Martinez says several of his puppies have gone on to become therapy dogs , meaning they're calm and affectionate enough to visit schools, hospitals, and rehabilitation centers to offer psychological and physiological support to patients and people in need. Some Labradoodles go on to become service dogs , as the breed creator originally intended. But don't confuse them for docile dogs. They still have big personalities-Martinez describes a typical day with his dogs as "entertaining"-but mischievous behavior can be counteracted with training , which Labradoodles quickly pick up on. Genesis Service Dogs , which breeds Labradoodles to help children and adults with special needs, says the dogs will mature slower than their Labrador retriever brethren, so they'll be puppyish for about a year and a half. Then they'll become even more affectionate toward their humans. They're mostly quiet, keeping barking to a minimum, but Labradoodles' energy level can vary based on their generation, Martinez says. The dogs with more Labrador genes F1s will be more energetic than the ones with more poodle in their blood. Labradoodles will often reflect the energy levels of their owner, Martinez says, but they're still descendants of sporting dogs who like having something to do. Whether that means long walks together or playing games in the yard, a Labradoodle will be happiest with any activity he can do with you. Living Needs Labradoodles are flexible when it comes to where they live. While the standard Labradoodles are bigger, they can still reside in an apartment, though generally Martinez admits smaller dogs, potentially miniature Labradoodles, are better suited for living in smaller homes. If you do live in an apartment or smaller home where yard space is limited, make sure you can regularly fit in enough exercise and play for your active pup to blow off some steam, like a visit to the local dog park every so often. Labradoodles certainly won't turn down a house with a big, fenced-in yard , though. Martinez lets his group of pups spend plenty of time outside, where they'll be just as likely to lay down for a spell than run around on the doggie playground equipment. They do need exercise, though. If Martinez sends a puppy home with someone who works all day, he advises them to invest in a dog walker so their doodle is able to stretch his legs during the hours he's left alone. But if you have the time and like to explore, a Labradoodle could be the perfect hiking partner. And since poodles are considered water dogs, some Labradoodles like to swim , too. This breed is good for all ages, Martinez says, but Labradoodle owners will still need to put the work in with positive reinforcement training and to meet their activity needs. He subscribes to the oft-used mantra: There aren't any bad dogs, just bad owners. Care It's important to start training your Labradoodle puppy as soon as you bring him home. Labradoodles are considered smart dogs and will pick up what you're teaching very quickly. Martinez says they may even understand some commands within the first day. Labradoodles are smart enough that daily training doesn't take too long. Martinez recommends three or four sessions of 10 minutes each day to accommodate the dogs' short attention spans, which is like that of "a young child," he says. They're so easy to train and quick to learn that even first-time dog owners can fare well, Martinez says. But if you don't have the time or know-how to train, obedience school is the answer. Once he's learned to recognize the basics, your doodle will start making those classic head tilts when you mention their favorite words walk, car, treat. According to Martinez, early socialization -both with other dogs and people-is important for Labradoodle puppies. Martinez says he lets the puppies he breeds spend their early days with his adult dogs to get them used to other dogs at a young age. If your vet says it's safe, you may want to have your new Labradoodle puppy meet other humans and dogs in their first few weeks in their new home. When it comes to exercise, three to four walks a day will suffice which is why you might need a dog walker. Otherwise, swimming, hiking, or some playtime in the yard or at the park will help your dog immensely. Labradoodles do enjoy their activity, but Martinez says they'll spend just as much time lounging around to relax. Grooming is another integral part of caring for your Labradoodle, but it's probably best to outsource it. These fluffy boys and girls need regular trims. Martinez sends his dogs to the goomer for a haircut every six weeks, regardless of whether they're F1s, F1bs, or F2s. Regular brushing is a good idea, too, because you don't want your Labradoodle's hair to get matted or uncomfortable. You'll also want to keep those ears dry and clean , and don't forget to keep up with the nail trimming and tooth brushing , either. Health Here's another reason Labradoodles are good for first-time dog owners: They're a relatively healthy breed over their years of life. But being the ideal combination of Labs and poodles also means Labradoodles can be susceptible to the health problems of both their parent breeds. Labs, for instance, will commonly suffer from hip and elbow dysplasia , so the risk is there for Labradoodles as well. Doodles can also run into problems with myopathies, diseases that damage muscles , and exercise-induced collapse. For anyone looking to adopt a Labradoodle, Martinez couldn't emphasize enough: Make sure your breeder conducts DNA tests on your puppy's parents to find any genetic abnormalities. The same goes for having their hips and elbows tested and certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals. If the breeder you're considering doesn't do that testing or says it isn't needed, find someone else. Martinez notes that Labrador retrievers are happy to eat just about anything and everything. While your Labradoodle will likely be a bit pickier, be sure to keep any weight gain in check since they may have a tendency to overeat if they're allowed to. History Australian Wally Conron is credited as the modern-day creator of the Labradoodle, breeding the first one in the late s. He was trying to create a guide dog that would also be hypoallergenic, by breeding a Labrador retriever and a standard poodle. Clearly, his efforts were successful. The breed exploded in popularity, and since it is the combination of the U. People seek out the Labradoodle for its trifecta of cute looks, friendly demeanor, and minimal shedding. While the Labradoodle is the seemingly ideal dog for people with allergies, Conron has said he regrets his creation. Because of the intense demand for these "designer dogs," Conron has expressed concern over the bad actors who breed Labradoodles in puppy mills-and the inexperienced and sometimes misinformed breeders who fail to prevent genetic problems from being passed on to new generations. Labradoodles have belonged to several famous owners, including golfer Tiger Woods, actress Jennifer Aniston, and actor Henry Winkler. Doodles certainly earn their keep on Instagram, so if you need some extra fluff in your life, the Dood Squad is a good place to start. Was this page helpful? Pet Keen is reader-supported. The 10 Amazing Labradoodle Facts 1. Labradoodles Appeared in the s While crossbreeding dogs has been around for centuries, the creation of the Labradoodle is most often attributed to Wally Conron. Wally had tried training several Poodles, but none of them were successful candidates. He eventually developed the Labradoodle in , which was much calmer than the Poodles, and successfully became a seeing-eye dog. Image Credit: Dayton, Pixabay 2. Loose dog hair often carries dead skin, which is what triggers allergies. The level of shedding from Labradoodles also depends on the type of coat that they inherit. Poodles are among the smartest dog breeds, 2 and Labrador Retrievers are often loved because of their intuition and ability to connect with people easily. This combination makes them relatively easy to train, and they make wonderful pets for first-time dog owners with little experience with dogs. Image Credit: Lopolo, Shutterstock 4. After all, they were first intentionally bred to be seeing-eye dogs. Along with their intelligence and eagerness to please, Labradoodles are also excellent service dog candidates because of their low-shedding coats. This makes them less likely to trigger allergies and more compatible with homes that have individuals with dog allergies. Labradoodles also have an unintimidating appearance, which can be extremely helpful for making people feel comfortable and at ease in their presence. Labradoodles can also be bred with each other, and this is one way that helps breeders maintain a consistent size throughout all their litters of puppies. Because of the varying ways that Labradoodles can be bred, their sizes can range from small-medium dogs to large dogs. Despite this, you can find several different Labradoodle associations and clubs that help preserve and protect the health of the breed. This is because both Labrador Retrievers and Poodles were originally bred as retrieving dogs. However, many people are surprised to find out that Poodles were intended to be dogs that could swim easily. Their coats are designed to keep them warm as they swim. In fact, the fancy Poodle cut was actually intended to prevent Poodles from retaining too much water in their coats and to help them swim quickly without losing body heat. Image Credit: Aaron Rogosin, Shutterstock 8. This is why Labradoodles often become successful service dogs. Matted hair can be dangerous for any dog because it can end up tugging at the skin, which causes irritation and increased itching. More severe cases can lead to skin lesions, infections, and flea and tick infestations. Nutrition and Feeding Large breed dogs, as well as having large appetites, benefit from a different balance of nutrients including minerals and vitamins compared to smaller-breed dogs. Labradoodles like most large breed dogs can be prone to bloating and stomach problems, but smaller, more frequent meals can help minimise this risk. The Labradoodle diet needs to have the right balance of all the main nutrient groups including a constant supply of fresh water. It's important to conduct regular body condition scores to ensure you keep your dog in ideal shape, and remember to feed him at least twice daily and in accordance with the dog feeding guidelines of his particular food. Grooming Labradoodles It is difficult to predict what kind of coat the Labradoodle is going to have, as they may inherit a coat like a Labrador or they may inherit the Poodle coat or any mixtures of the two. This means they may not shed or shed minimally the Poodle coat but in that case will require regular trimming. Or else they may shed the Labrador coat and may or may not have an unruly coat that is prone to matting. They can be anything from low maintenance to high maintenance so be prepared for either! Dog ear care is extremely important as Poodles can have problems with excessive hair inside the ears, which can cause infections or sore ears. Training Labradoodles Dog training is important for this very active, smart and busy dog. They are a joy to train as both breeds are intelligent and love working with their owner — but they will learn bad habits as quickly as good ones, so reward-based training should start early and be ongoing. This naturally encourages dogs to walk with a looser leash. Tactical Collar Tactical collars are a major step up in strength from a standard collar. If your dog spends a lot of time running through the forest, for example, then a tactical collar is durable enough not to be torn up and destroyed from rubbing against bark and branches. Tactical collars also have other worthwhile features. For instructions, watch this video. Each collar will be available in a range of sizes, and each size will usually be adjustable by several inches. On average, Boxers tend to have necks between 16 and 22 inches around, which will be a medium or large collar from most brands. Keep in mind that sizes vary between brands! Your Boxer might need a large in one brand but a medium in another, so make sure to pay attention to the sizing when you order. Comfort Your Boxer will get used to wearing a collar no matter what, but you should still consider their comfort when choosing one. Well, an uncomfortable collar is probably pretty similar for your pooch. And with all of their exuberant energy, Boxers tend to be leash pullers, so consider that as well. Luckily, many collars are well padded to keep your Boxer comfortable. The largest specimens weigh in around 80 pounds , with the smallest females barely weighing 50! Even so, their muscular bodies make them far stronger than your average pound dog. Weak buckles on a collar can sometimes be a breaking point when your Boxer takes off running. This is especially true of thinner collars, so if your Boxer is strong, you should look for collars that are at least an inch wide. Metal buckles can also be a much stronger alternative to the plastic buckles often found on cheaper collars. Durability Boxers are very energetic dogs that love to frolic and play. They tend to play hard and roughhouse a lot, especially with other dogs around. Under these conditions, a collar can sustain a lot of damage. It gets rubbed against abrasive surfaces, chewed on by other dogs during play, and might even get wet if your Boxer goes for a swim! Because Boxers are such active dogs, a durable collar is more important with them than other dog breeds that are less likely to destroy their collar through everyday play and adventure. Collars come in all manner of colors, styles, and designs. Buckles can be contrasting or coordinating colors as well. You can even get matching leash and collar sets! If appearances are of utmost importance to you, then you might want to consider one of these collars with unique aesthetics. Besides, a collar can be attractive and still meet our other criteria! Special Features The main reasons to keep a collar on your dog are for control and identification. A great example is a handle. You might also find collars with special Velcro attachments for ID tags or various types of buckles that allow for easier fit adjustment. None of these features is needed, but they can certainly come in handy! The good news? You can use the categories to quickly narrow down your search to the most applicable collars for you and your Boxer. The most obvious difference here is the cobra buckle. Instead of a plastic buckle that could snap when your Boxer pulls on the leash, this collar is made with a heavy-duty metal buckle with a locking mechanism that makes it smooth and easy to put on or take off. In fact, the entire collar is built with durability and a long lifespan in mind. The collar is made from double-layered nylon webbing with numerous lines of stitching. All of the metal parts on this collar are rust-proof. Sizing on this collar is a bit strange though. You do get quite a few colors to choose from, with interesting names like Arizona Heartbeat and California Horizon. In total, there are 10 color choices. After spending less than a year on Amazon, this collar has amassed more than five-star reviews! You can read those reviews and see all 10 available colors for yourself by following this link. What I love about it: Excellent durability, high-quality materials, and multiple color options. What I wish it had: More adjustability in each size would make proper fitment easier.

Video of a Basset Hound Mixed with German Shepherd Temperament and Personality Obedient, intelligent, affectionate, and loyal like both its parents, they excel as amazing house pets. In some of them, you could also see the clownish instincts of the Basset Hound, keeping everyone in the house fully entertained. The Basset Hound German Shepherd mix is famed for its guarding skills and watchdog instincts all because of its alert, brave and courageous nature. This trait, therefore, makes them wary of strangers, compelling them to intimate their masters the moment they see any intruder trespassing into their domain or territory. They also have a good rapport with kids, though parental supervision is needed with the little ones. It gets along well with other dogs and cats, especially when brought up with them. Care Exercise Being a result of two of the most energetic dog breeds, the Basset requires a lot of activities like a long walk and sufficient playtime in a fenced yard on a regular basis to be mentally and physically energized. Grooming They too might shed heavily just as their parents and thus need a bi-weekly brushing using a rubber curry brush. Bathe it when it gets dirty and do not forget to trim its nails, brush its teeth, as well as clean its ears and eyes on a routine basis. Health Problems Some of the common health problems it suffers from include hip and elbow dysplasia, eye problems cherry eye and cataract and cervical vertebral instability. Training Though its intelligence is a boon for training, it could at times be difficult to handle and show the stubbornness and strong-willed nature of its parents. Giving the German Shepherd Basset Hound mix socialization training would help it distinguish between the good and the bad since an early age and also develop a good rapport with friendly people and all dogs. Obedience training and teaching of commands would help it to remain disciplined and well-behaved since its puppy days. Feeding Good quality dry dog food is essential to keep it in good health. If you are adding homemade food to its diet, make sure you consult the vet regarding the same. November 2, at pm We adopted a basset shepherd about 9 years ago. They estimated him at about 6 years old. That would put him at about 15 years old now, but he still acts like a puppy all the time. He is amazing with my kids. He never bites, but if they get to rough he will bark at them and we remind them that he did not like what they were doing and not to do it again. I do believe he is very sensitive around his hind legs, and seems to be going blind very slowly. This really is an amazing breed. I wish we would have had him since he was a puppy. This mix is a descendant of two of the most intelligent and loyal breeds. The German Shepherd Basset Hound mix comes from two hard-working dog breeds. Both parents have hunting instincts, so one can expect this breed to be full of energy and eager for physical activities. On the other hand, the Coonhound Shepherd mix is another German Shepherd mix. Just like other hound dogs, they are very active and affectionate. With the right supervision and training, both crossbreeds can prove to be excellent family companions. German Shepherd Hound Mix Origin and History The Shepherd Hound mix has existed for less than 20 years, but there is still little knowledge about its history. However, most of its background can be traced back to its parent breeds. The German Shepherd Hound dog mix comes from a breed of hunters and farm dogs. Their Hound ancestors were originally bred to hunt live animals, especially rabbits. Meanwhile, the German Shepherd breed was originally trained to herd sheep. As years passed, they were also tasked to help with search-and-rescue operations and were known to be excellent guide dogs. That is why one can expect that a German Shepherd Hound mix puppy will be very active and need regular physical and mental exercises. They are also very likely to have a strong sense of smell. Typically, a Shepherd Hound mix has a long body with short legs. Its muzzle is long and square. The coat may be black, brown, or white, while others have beautiful patterns and combinations of these different colors. Aside from these, a Shepherd Hound mix may exhibit traits from other varieties of German Shepherds. Instead of the typical brown and black color, some may have solid black or solid brown like the liver German Shepherd. The Coonhound Shepherd mix or the German Shepherd Basset Hound mix puppy may also have short or long hair, depending again on the variety of their German Shepherd parent. Some may have a double coat, while others have a single coat. This will protect them from cold or extreme heat. A Shepherd Hound mix may also have a wooly, dense, and slightly wavy coat. The ears of this crossbreed are also large and pointing downwards, just like that of a Basset Hound. Their eyes are bright and alert, and their tails are quite long. Meanwhile, a Coonhound Shepherd mix can weigh anywhere from 45 to 80 pounds in weight and between 23 and 27 inches in height. Hence, you can expect your dog can grow from a medium to large-sized pooch once they are fully grown. Usually, GSD Hound mixes stop growing between 12 and 18 months. However, others may continue to grow until 24 months old. You must also consider the genetics and variant of your German Shepherd Hound mix puppy. Its weight and height may slightly differ from the others if the parents come from the giant or dwarf German Shepherd lineage. Moreover, there are four variants of the Coonhound. This may also affect the size of your hybrid dog. It will not hesitate to put its life on the line to protect its owner. This hybrid also makes a good family dog because of its affectionate nature. The male German Shepherd Basset Hound mix can be more protective than its female counterpart, but they are also friendlier. But this behavior may differ based on the variety of their parents. This mix is patient with children and other dogs. However, they need supervision whenever they are around small kids because of their playfulness. The German Shepherd and Hound mix also has innate curiosity. This goes back to their history of being bred as hunters. Their intelligence and alertness make them not only good companions but also excellent guard dogs. Socialization at an early age is important to avoid problems in the future. One benefit of having this mix is it is not prone to many serious diseases unless they come from unhealthy parents. One of the most common problems with a German Shepherd Hound dog mix is obesity. Unlike other dogs, this breed will eat their hearts out if left with food and treats. Other health problems that are usually seen with German Shepherd Hound mixes are the following: Degenerative Myelopathy: This is also called chronic degenerative radiculomyelopathy CDRM. It is a condition where the spinal cord of the dog is affected, leading to its inability to walk and control urination and bowel movements. According to studies, this condition arises when a dog has a mutated gene or when it inherits it from its parents. This condition is hereditary but common for large breeds and overweight dogs. The pain is due to the ball and socket joints in the hips, which become loose. Continuous abnormal movement of the hip joint causes it to lose cartilage and eventually form scars and bone spurs. Eye Issues: One of the most common eye problems seen in the Shepherd Hound mix is the cherry eye. It is called cherry eye because it appears as a bright red, swollen gland in the eyes. Although this is not very painful, the condition may worsen if the dog scratches it. The best way to prevent these conditions is to bring your Shepherd Hound mix to the veterinarian for health checks. Providing them with nutritious food and suitable exercise is also beneficial. If you are planning to get a Shepherd Hound mix, it is important that you have sufficient knowledge on how to take care of your pooch. This guide will teach you how to feed, groom, and train your dog. Food and Diet A Shepherd Hound mix needs a balanced diet in order to keep it healthy and live a longer life. Proteins, fats, fibers, vitamins, and minerals are all important to keep your German Shepherd Hound dog mix in optimal health condition. The right amount of fats is important because this will provide your dog the energy that it needs for its daily activities since its parents are both very energetic breeds. A bowl with clean water must also always be available to keep your dogs hydrated. You may add some ice cubes to their bowl if the weather gets too hot for them in the summer. It also has a thick overcoat which is why they shed a lot during the spring and summer seasons. Regular brushing is essential to prevent it from matting and to keep the natural oils on its coat. A Shepherd Hound mix may bathe once a month or every 2 to 3 months. Regular brushing also removes the dust trapped on its coat. However, your dog needs a bath if it accidentally rolls on its poop or plays in the mud. During flea and tick season, bathe your German Shepherd Hound mix with a medicated shampoo. Some common skin problems are eczema, hot spots, and other fungal infections. Training and Exercise Although this cross is highly trainable, a German Shepherd Hound mix puppy needs training in basic obedience, potty training, walking, and socialization at an early age. This mix can be stubborn and may sometimes not pay attention to your lessons. But given proper training and patience, your dog will learn your commands easily. Therefore, regular exercises, both physical and mental, are important to them. They may destroy things at home if they get bored, so aside from regular walks, toys that are mentally stimulating will be helpful in keeping them busy. German Shepherd Bloodhound Mixes require a diet that will meet the needs of large dogs. This also means they will likely eat a large amount at each meal. A high-quality, protein-packed kibble is a sufficient food for your dog. They also need fats, vitamins, minerals, fruits, and vegetables to stay in the best shape. Their perfect food will depend on their weight, age, and any health conditions that they may have. Overall, a well-balanced food that does not contain fillers or additives is a healthy choice for them. Clean, fresh water should be available at all times. Given the slobbery nature of this dog, their bowl may have to be changed several times a day. Digging, excessive barking, and destruction in the house can be avoided with proper exercise. At a minimum, this mix needs at least an hour a day of good physical activity. Not only will it keep them healthy, but it will also keep them out of trouble. While this makes the dog easy to train , the stubbornness of the Bloodhound can sneak out sometimes. Luckily, the desire that this dog has to perform a task and do it well outweighs most of the stubbornness. They are eager to do their jobs. As a product of two working dogs, this mix is happiest when they have a job to do. With their high energy levels, they may also benefit from agility training. Then, they shed some more. The coat can take on the texture of either parent and daily brushing can help keep the shedding under control. You can invite them into the tub when they get dirty or start to smell. A moisturizing oatmeal shampoo will keep their skin healthy and soft. Regular nail trims to avoid paw injuries are required. The most important part of grooming this dog is ear care. If your mix inherited Bloodhound ears, they will be long, heavy, and droopy. Moisture, dirt, and bacteria can get trapped in the ear. After baths or any time your dog gets wet, be sure to thoroughly dry the ear canals with a soft towel. Check regularly for any signs of infection, like redness, swelling, discharge, incessant ear scratching, or a foul odor coming from the canal. These dogs should be seen by a vet regularly to detect and possibly avoid any health problems. Ear infections — The buildup of bacteria leads to soreness, swelling, pain, and itchiness. Osteoarthritis — This is the depletion of cartilage in the joints, increasing inflammation and causing pain. Bloat — The stomach fills with gas and twists, trapping the air and requiring surgery to repair. Male vs Female Choosing whether to get a male or female German Shepherd Bloodhound Mix will come down to a matter of personal preference. The personality of each dog is unique to that individual, but generalizations have been made about the different sexes. Females are thought to be gentler and more passive, while males want to dominate situations and take control. Males are also reported to be more possessive and protective than females. The only documented difference between the two is size. Females are typically smaller than males, though both can grow to be quite large. This dog is a combination of desired characteristics that make them great family companions. You can find a mix online through breeders or people looking to unload accidental litters, but checking with your local animal shelters and rescues first is a great way to find a beautiful dog and save a life. See also:. Coat The coats of the German Shepherd and the Coonhound are vastly different. The GSD is a double-coated breed with a medium-length outer coat. In contrast, the Black and Tan Coonhound has a short but dense coat. The coat of their offspring would depend on which parent it takes after. It will shed throughout the year but will do so more heavily twice a year to blow its coat. This is generally managed with occasional bathing and weekly brushing more frequently during shedding season. In contrast, a German Shepherd Coonhound cross that takes its coat from the Coonhound parent will be much easier to groom because of its short coat. However, it will still shed regularly and have the tendency to develop a strong, undesirable odor. For such dogs, frequent bathing and regular brushing are ideal. Ear maintenance is also a concern for a mutt that takes its ears from its Coonhound parent. Coonhounds have long, droopy ears that make them more prone to ear infections. It is critical to dry their ears thoroughly after every bath and to check them regularly for any signs of infection. Strength The physiques of both the German Shepherd and the Coonhound will undoubtedly result in a solidly built dog. Their bodies will be suitable for various types of demanding work, although much care should be given to support their bones and joints. These dogs are also expected to have the ability to work incessantly due to their incredible work ethic. As for bite strength, if the mix takes more after the German Shepherd, it could have a bite force somewhere around psi. Speed Although the Black and Tan Coonhound is best known for its nose, its roots as a hunter of raccoons and other small, scurrying game have also built it up for high speeds. They are also incredibly agile. Similarly, German Shepherds have been known to reach top speeds of 30 minutes per hour. With proper conditioning, they are also excellent endurance runners. They will thrive and be on their best behavior when they are given ample opportunities for physical exertion on a daily basis. This might be in the form of long walks or even some active playtime in a yard. Training for and participating in canine sports like agility and flyball is also a good way to exercise a GSD-Coonhound cross. Ultimately, this will lead to a well-rounded and well-behaved dog. Trainability One trait that the German Shepherd Coonhound Mix can inherit from both parents is a remarkable eagerness to please. That makes them highly trainable. However, their intelligence will depend greatly on which parent they take after. Black and Tan Coonhounds are considered working dogs of average intelligence. They may require up to 40 repetitions before they can master a trick, and will follow a command at least 5 out of 10 times. They only need fewer than 5 exposures to master a trick, and will obey at least 9 out of 10 times. In any instance, a Coonhound German Shepherd mix will be a very trainable dog that is eager to work and please you. Temperament With proper socialization and training, the German Shepherd Coonhound Mix should be an excellent breed, both as a working dog as well as a companion dog. They will inherit loyalty , confidence, and eagerness to please from both parents. They are also likely to be warm and affectionate towards their family members. However, they will need strong leadership and plenty of exercise to keep them from developing unwanted or destructive behaviors. Health As the Coonhound-German Shepherd cross will undoubtedly be a large dog, it would be prudent to monitor it for hip and elbow dysplasia. Ideally, both parents would be screened for these conditions before allowing them to breed. Other health issues that this mutt can take from the German Shepherd parent is the tendency for digestive problems, including the life-threatening condition of bloat. From the Coonhound parent, it can inherit a higher risk for ear infections, thyroid issues, and cataracts. To lengthen their life expectancy, feed them with high-quality dog food, stay up-to-date with their vaccinations and parasite prevention treatments, and give them plenty of opportunities to exercise. This enables mixed breeds to participate in a wide variety of canine sports and work towards titles. They would be unable to participate in conformation events, which require dogs to be judged against a purebred standard. GSD-Coonhound crosses can excel in various canine events. How popular is the German Shepherd Coonhound Mix? Finding German Shepherd-Coonhound puppies is no easy feat as each of these dogs is much more valuable as purebreds. Therefore, breeders have little incentive to cross them together. Bernard , or the Jack Russell. A German Shepherd Coonhound Mix can weigh anywhere from lbs. German Shepherds usually weigh between 66 and 88 pounds and Coonhounds can weigh anywhere from 45 to 80 pounds. This means you should expect to have a medium to large-sized dog when your puppy is full-grown. There are four popular Coonhound variants. This is a fair question, considering that German Shepherds can require a lot of grooming. Keep in mind that mixes with more Shepherd-like coats will require more grooming than Coonhound dominant crossbreed. Long walks and park visits can be a great way to help your dog work off extra energy. Training and teaching your dog tricks can help with mental stimulation. Not everyone can take their dog outside as much as they would like to. Luckily, hound mixes can do well indoors in some situations. Coonhound energy levels can vary greatly. If your dog will be confined indoors often, Cesar Millan offers some great tips on exercising your dog inside of your home! Small children should be taught to respect and understand any dog. Socialization is also always key for dogs owned by families with children of any age. These intelligent and eager to please dogs sometimes can require lots of training. However, every dog is different, and some dogs are much easier to train than others. Puppies start learning how to behave from the moment you bring them home. Be consistent, patient, and practice dedication. This dog makes a great family companion, hunting partner, and even can be trained for law enforcement! Be sure to avoid puppy mills and unreputable sources, as this could land you with an unhealthy and poorly socialized puppy. Frequently Asked Questions Do coonhounds like to cuddle? If you have a coonhound you may already be aware of how affectionate and downright soppy they can be sometimes. They have a really good temperament and are known to be sweet-natured. They are also pretty easy going and love being around humans. They also have what is known as the puppy piling instinct. This is where pups sleep in little piles among their siblings and parent dogs. As such, this behavior can remain when the dog has matured and may result in them wanting to sleep close to you and lay their head on your lap. Just like humans, all dogs have personalities. This means that some coonhounds may love cuddles whereas others might prefer their own space. Are coonhounds good house dogs? Whether a coonhound makes a good house dog will depend on what you mean by house dog! Coonhounds tend to need lots of exercise. This means you should probably not get one if you have no room at home or in your garden for them to exercise. They may not always be the best choice if, for whatever reason, you are unable to take them out for adequate exercise. That being said, if you have a small house but can walk them each day, it should be fine. In terms of their behavior and suitability to live at home with you and your family, coonhounds are the perfect furry companion! They are very friendly and enjoy being around people. They tend to get along well with pets and children, and will love relaxing on the sofa each night! Are coonhounds hard to train? Coonhounds can be a little harder to train than other breeds. The reason for this is that they were bred for the purpose of hunting raccoons. This means they are very determined and have a high prey drive. They can also be quite stubborn and have loud barks. With patience and persistence, you will be able to succeed in training them. Do shepherd mixes bark a lot? Your shepherd mix will likely bark a lot. The reason for this is because anything mixed with a German shepherd will have some characteristics and attitude traits from them. German shepherds are not known for their silence. They like to chat, and of course, they do this by barking. With this in mind, any offspring of a German shepherd parent, whether that be purebred or mixed will likely be the same. This is nothing to be alarmed about of course. It is just their way of communicating. You can train them to be less barky, but to some extent, you will have to accept that this is how they are! If you are concerned that your shepherd mix is barking a little too much then it may be worth taking them to the vet to be checked out, just in case. This is especially important if they seem to have developed a new barking habit out of nowhere. Wrapping Things Up Every mixed breed is unique and full of surprises! Dog expert Simon Foden offers an in-depth look at exactly how special crossbreed pups are. Remember, no matter what breed your dog might be, learning as much as you can on how to provide them with great care is a great idea.

The protein will come from readily available sources such as chicken or beef, and not exotic or boutique sources like kangaroo or venison as you saw in second study mentioned above. According to the AKC , quality, regulated animal byproducts can be good for your dog. These byproducts can include organ meats or entrails, which often contain more nutrients than, say, plain chicken breast. Another misconception is that dogs should eat grain-free diets. As you saw in the second study mentioned above, that can actually be very harmful for your dog and cause DCM. But food labels can be a little vague and confusing, so below is an explanation of what some of these terms mean, according to the Merck Veterinary Manual and the AKC. There is one caveat though. For instance, flaked corn, ground corn, and kibbled corn could be sprinkled in an ingredient list and not be listed as the first few ingredients, but in reality, if you were to add them all up they are all corn, after all , you might find that this food is made mostly of corn. The same goes for chicken, chicken meal, and chicken byproduct. Meat vs. Meat Meal vs. The quality of these ingredients can vary widely, so be sure to talk to your vet about this and choose a reputable brand of food. Below are a few examples: Obesity. Golden Retrievers love food and they do have a tendency to become overweight if you let them. This problem can often affect these next two problems… Joint issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to joint issues and growing too fast because they eat too much can often make this problem worse more on this in the next section. Heart issues. Skin issues. Golden Retrievers are prone to hot spots and excess protein in their diets can be a factor that causes them. Many goldens suffer from food allergies. One cup of Brand X food may have calories per cup, while Brand Y has calories per cup. During a vet visit our veterinarian said he looked too small and lethargic for a puppy his age about 8 weeks at the time , and he recommended we feed him a little more. As far as how often to feed your puppy, this same rule applies. For us, we fed Oliver three times per day until he was a little over a year old. Getting a Golden Retriever Puppy? Get the gameplan for raising them right with the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook. Those two statements may sound random, but they are related. According to the Banfield Pet Hospital , overfeeding your Golden Retriever can cause them to grow too fast and increase their risk of hip dysplasia. You probably noticed that a raw diet was the fourth-most popular diet Golden Retriever owners feed their dog. Since puppies are growing and adults are just maintaining their weight, they have different dietary needs. And for fats, puppy food should have at least 8. As far as when to switch from puppy food to adult food, talk to your veterinarian. To see a list of other milestones your puppy will hit like when they lose their first teeth, or when their coat is fully grown check out this timeline of Golden Retriever puppy milestones. Like most of the other questions in this post, this is something to talk to your veterinarian about. Many foods will have the same vitamins that pills have already in them, but on the other hand, some breeders require that you give your puppy vitamins for their health guarantee to be valid. First, we unknowingly started him off on one of the brands listed in the graph above that is correlated with DCM. Then we switched to another brand that he just sort of liked. If we were to have another puppy, we would definitely start with the Royal Canin Golden Retriever Puppy food. How To Switch Food Brands The other day I was talking to someone who was complaining that her puppy was having lots of stomach issues. Dogs have sensitive stomachs so if you want to switch foods, you need to do it slowly. You should take about a week to transition from the old food to the new brand. Also consider how long the brand of food has been around, whether or not there have been any recalls of that brand, and if there is any research behind it. What do you feed your Golden Retriever puppy? Have any questions about what to feed them? Let me know in the comments below! Related articles:. The range of amounts is based on the activity of your Golden for the day, either low, moderate, or high level of activity. Golden Retrievers should have scheduled times to eat daily. The scheduled times will help them with their energy levels and keep them healthy. You can schedule their eating times as to what works best for your schedule. For example, feeding them before you leave for work and then when you get home. As a puppy, they will eat three times a day, so you will need to find times in those first few months to feed them more often. When they are an adult or senior, the scheduling of feeding times will be easier because they will only eat twice daily. For a Golden Retriever puppy, the best feeding schedule is once in the morning, noontime, and in the evening. For example, you could feed their first meal at am, lunch at noon, then dinner at pm. Planning their mealtimes around your mealtimes will often make it easier for you and the puppy. Make sure to give them plenty of time after eating to got to the bathroom a couple of times before heading to bed. Hopefully, this will help them sleep for a longer period. After about six months, your Golden Retriever can go down to two daily feedings. This usually occurs once in the morning and once in the evening. They can usually last about 12 hours between meals. If it goes past 12 hours, they could become nauseated. Golden Retrievers can experience food allergies often caused from proteins in dairy or meat products. If your dog experiences symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, or itching they may have a food allergy. They warn that feeding dogs any raw animal-source protein could cause illness because it has not gone through a process to remove harmful pathogens. However, a raw diet can be healthy if you are willing to go through the extra cleaning processes of the meat. This is a lot of work and difficult to do correctly and safely. We do not recommend it without expert veterinary help. Before starting a raw diet with your Golden, be sure to consult a veterinarian. Find one that is familiar with raw foods and can help with the proper handling of the foods. If you work hard to make sure your homemade foods are rich in the vitamins and minerals that a dog needs, then it might work for your Golden Retriever. It takes a lot more time to find recipes and make sure it has all the nutritional value of a store-bought dog food. They may not be getting enough vitamins and minerals like they do from their dog food. You should also call your vet, as the quicker you treat pet poisoning, the easier and safer it is to treat. People typically feed their Golden Retriever either dry food kibble or canned wet food, but there are several different kinds of dog food, and it can be daunting knowing where to start. So, what type of dog food is best for Golden Retrievers? The best dog food for Golden Retrievers is dry food, such as kibble or cold-pressed. Dry food is more practicable for medium-large breeds, provides more nutrients per bite than wet food, and is less costly. Even if you choose a premium brand, dry food will still be less expensive. You must, however, also meet your own needs and beliefs. This means that the food must contain all of the requisite nutrients in their appropriate proportions. Relevant nutrient details should be prominent. Feeding instructions must be provided. Premium protein sources beef, poultry, lamb, pork, fish, etc. Superior dog foods will also include additional protein sources, such as eggs and plant-based proteins, such as vegetables, grains, and legumes. This information will help you to decide what kind to feed your dog. Dry Foods One of the most popular types of dog food is dry food. Complete dry dog food comes in two varieties. So what exactly is kibble? Kibble is essentially ground-up ingredients shaped into various shapes and sizes of pellets. All kibble is produced similarly by using the same kind of machinery. Even premium kibble made with the best quality ingredients uses the same process. What is cold-pressed dog food? The food is produced at a much lower temperature and cooked faster to retain higher nutritional value, vitamins, and flavor before being pressed into different shapes. It is widespread in the United Kingdom and Europe and is becoming more popular in the US and other regions. Here are the main points to consider when contemplating feeding your doggo dry food: Since kibble and cold-pressed food contain less moisture, they have more nutrients per bite than wet food. Dry food can also aid Goldens with dental issues because it helps clean their teeth and gums. For a medium-large dog, such as a Golden Retriever, dry dog food is the most sensible option; however, kibble and cold-pressed dog food come in all shapes and sizes, so smaller breeds can choose from a smaller range. Pro Tip! She also loves tuna, which leaves her coat and skin looking lustrous and healthy and reduces shedding. When I add a topping, I reduce the amount of dry food she eats marginally to prevent her from gaining weight. As a result, the higher the water content, the fewer nutrients, so your Golden Retriever will need to consume more to get all the nutrition he needs. Here are some things to know about wet dog food: Not every brand of canned food provides enough protein for your Golden Retriever. You should avoid low-quality wet foods since they commonly use thickeners such as wheat flour, white rice, or other grains. A wet diet may be more costly, especially if your dog is the size of a Golden, but it may be ideal if your dog enjoys eating a more significant portion. A wet diet may also be preferable for smaller breeds. If your dog is a picky eater or you have a senior Golden Retriever with a reduced appetite, wet food might be a better selection. You can also buy semi-moist dog foods. However, these are not as popular as they offer the least nutritional value and can be expensive. Unfortunately, dog food manufacturers incorporate sugar and salts to extend the shelf life of their products. Artificial color, chemical preservatives, and chemical flavor enhancers are commonly found in semi-moist foods. A semi-moist diet may not be suited to your Golden Retriever, especially if he is on the heavy side and needs to lose a few pounds. On the other hand, if your Golden Retriever has trouble digesting other food types, semi-moist food might be the best option. If he is a picky eater, he will appreciate the meaty flavor and find this kind of food more appealing. The foods may be mixed or alternated at each meal. For example, wet in the morning and dry in the evening or vice-versa. Home Produced Diet Some owners like to feed their Golden Retriever a home-produced diet referred to as home-feeders. Because of the ease and variety of dry and wet dog foods, I wondered why anyone would want to be a home feeder. Here are the main reasons people choose to feed a home-produced diet: Home feeders sought alternatives to commercial pet foods as they were worried about the nutritional value of the ingredients used. Home feeders enjoyed the process of preparing the food and strengthening the relationship with their dog or satisfying their opinions. Home feeders fear their dogs will merely not like or refuse to eat commercial dog food. A home-prepared diet may be essential to help with a diagnosis e. Home feeders sought comfort for dogs with chronic or terminal illnesses. There are several drawbacks to making dog food at home. It is possible, but it will take a lot of effort and hard work, and it may end up costing more than the highest-quality dog food available. Homemade diets can provide total nutrition. However, you need to make sure your Golden Retriever gets the correct balance of protein, fats, carbohydrates, minerals, and vitamins, and this is not easy to do every day. Professional pet nutritionists accredited by the American College of Veterinary Nutrition can also help you customize a balanced diet for your Golden Retriever. Here is their directory that you may find helpful. You should also cook vegetables and grains for easier digestion. Your dog will need routine health tests, ensuring that he does not lack any nutrients. While sled dogs and racing greyhounds have long eaten a raw food diet, there is a trend that surfaces now and again for feeding dogs an all-raw diet that includes raw meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruit, and some dairy. When determining whether or not to feed your Golden Retriever a raw diet, there are two crucial things to remember. The first is to ensure your dog has a well-balanced diet that includes all the nutrients he needs to stay healthy and disease-free. When feeding a growing puppy, this is especially necessary. For example, homemade raw diets can be challenging because you must ensure that you are not under or overfeeding essential nutrients. This is especially important if your Golden Retriever is sick, pregnant, or nursing and has different nutritional needs. Food safety concerns about bacterial or parasitic infection in raw meat are the second most crucial issue. When feeding raw foods to dogs, food poisoning is a significant concern. Many raw-feeders believe that eating a raw diet has numerous health benefits, including increased energy, improved digestion, a shinier coat, better skin, cleaner teeth, and overall healthier life. However, there have been insufficient studies to measure the risk or benefits of feeding dogs a raw diet. Therefore, most believed benefits of feeding raw foods remain speculative. Nonetheless, according to this study, there is enough evidence to compel vets to discuss the human health consequences of raw food diets with pet owners and the risk of disease to the pet. If you choose to feed your Golden Retriever a raw diet, you can do so at home or buy commercial raw foodstuffs. These include whole foods, usually sold frozen or freeze-dried, which brings me nicely onto the next topic. Dehydrated and Freeze-Dried You can feed your Golden Retriever a dehydrated or freeze-dried diet; both have become increasingly common in recent years. These diets are similar in that they extract moisture from the food to preserve it and eliminate the need for artificial preservatives, but they vary in several ways. Dehydrated foods. These are partially cooked at low temperatures to extract most of the water. The food is heated but not fully cooked, so nutrients and enzymes remain whole. They are a complete diet and are frequently seen as a step-up from ordinary extruded kibble. To make it edible, you need to add warm water to dehydrated dog food. As a result, the food has a texture comparable to canned wet food but is much less refined. These foods are easy to store, prepare, and have a long shelf life because they do not need refrigeration. A dehydrated diet is also a good option if your Golden has a sensitive stomach as the food is easier on the digestive system due to the gentle cooking method. Freeze-dried foods. In a nutshell, freeze-dried foods are essentially a repackaged raw diet. The raw ingredients in freeze-dried dog food are frozen, then placed in a vacuum to turn the moisture into vapor. After that, the food is sealed in an airtight container. Unlike a true raw diet, this method reduces the number of bacteria such as salmonella. Although freeze-dried food looks like kibble and does not need to be rehydrated before eating, your Golden Retriever will find it more palatable and digestible if some water is added first. They are usually very high protein diets with fruits and vegetables occasionally added. Freeze-dried foods are more expensive than regular kibble, but as the food has most moisture removed, they are more nutritionally dense, so you feed your Retriever less. Feeding Your Golden Feeding Your Golden With the wide array of foods available today, it can be hard to make a good choice of what to feed your golden. Goldens are particularly sensitive to dietary concerns, and feeding them a high quality diet can help boost their health and immune system. Feeding a high quality food is not necessarily more expensive. Price is misleading: cheaper foods require more volume to be fed, up to several cups at each meal. With the wide array of better foods available today, you can make a smart choice of what to feed your golden. A golden will normally eat about two cups of premium food per day. It can be adjusted a little more or less based on activity level and metabolism. Goldens are prone to skin problems, and a poor quality diet will cause skin problems which translates into costly veterinarian bills. You will need to go to the pet store to purchase your food. Grocery store brands do not offer the nutrition goldens need for good health. Do not be persuaded by fancy advertising. Many commonly hyped foods are not high quality and maybe lacking the necessary nutritional value for your dog. For example, Grain Free foods may play a major part in taurine deficiency in Golden Retrievers and other large breed dogs. This deficiency can cause serious heart problems for your dog see Taurine and Grain Free information on this web page. Here are some guidelines: Look for food free of chemical preservatives. Some of these additives are suspected of causing cancer. Look for food preserved with Tocopherols Vitamins C and E as well as rosemary and other herbs. Make sure you have several months before this date. Frequent stores where there is a good turnover of food so you get a fresh bag. Always store dog food in a tight airtight container in a cool, dry place. If you only have one dog, consider buying pound bags instead of pounds bags so the food is fresher. Look for a food that has some form of meat as the first ingredient — such as lamb, chicken, or turkey. Avoid foods that have grain as the first ingredient. Also look for multiple meat proteins in the first seven ingredients. Protein from multiple sources is generally viewed as being beneficial such as lamb, chicken and fish , unless your dog is allergic to certain proteins. Dog food companies sometimes list several types of grains in the first seven ingredients. Beware of this — your dog needs animal protein in his diet! These are the intestines of the animal including what is in the intestines!! Most by-products are not desirable. By-products normally contain beaks, feet, feathers, heads and other slaughterhouse wastes — not the most nutritious part of the animal. Avoid foods that have sugars or artificial colors or flavors or a lot of added salt. Semi-moist dog foods are the worst — they usually are loaded with artificial colors and sugars. Added vitamins and minerals are beneficial only when applied after the baking process, because heat destroys vitamins. The best foods are made up of ingredients that would be suitable for human consumption. Most dog foods contain meat products that are not fit for human consumption. They can include meat from diseased livestock, condemned material from slaughterhouses such as tumors cut away from meat , and as horrible as it sounds, some pet foods include euthanized pets sold to rendering plants and even road kill. Is it any wonder why so many dogs die from cancer when they are being fed meat from these sources? Grains — many dog foods will contain some grains, for example, brown rice, barley, corn, wheat, etc. We have found that some goldens in our rescue program generally do poorly on a food that contains corn or soy. Many goldens are allergic to corn or wheat. So if your golden starts getting a lot of hot spots or skin problems — check his food. There is a big difference in quality of grain products. Look for whole rice or brown rice in the ingredients; white rice and ground brewers rice are much lower in nutrients than whole or brown rice. Often pet food companies take the sweepings off the mill floor and put it in pet food. Look for whole grains instead such as oatmeal, brown rice, barley, or whole oats. Grain Free foods. Grain Free foods have become increasingly available as food companies try to offer foods that are easier to digest with lower levels of complex carbohydrates and grains. One misconception is that grain free dog food is also low-carb, however, vegetables such as potatoes, sweet potatoes, green peas and tapioca often replace the grains in grain-free dog foods, especially in kibble foods, making them as high or higher in carbohydrates than grain-based dog foods. Studies have shown peas, beans, pea starch, legumes, potatoes and sweet potatoes that have replaced the grains in dog foods block the function of taurine. Taurine, a sulfuric acid, is essential for healthy cardiovascular function in Golden Retrievers. If left untreated, taurine deficiency in Golden Retrievers can cause dilated cardiomyopathy DCM , congestive heart failure and possibly death. Read all the ingredients in the food which should include taurine and check with your veterinarian before selecting or feeding any grain free food to your dog. Detailed information on dog food ingredients and taurine can be found on this web page under Taurine and Grain Free information and at: Diet Associated Heart Disease Treats — beware of many dog treats out there. They are filled with sugars, preservatives and artificial colors. Try buying biscuits at your local dog bakery or making some yourself. The dog food companies listed below have high quality treats available for your dog. Is your dog overweight? Beware of some diet dog foods, they can be loaded with fillers that provide no added nutrition. At least green beans are healthy. You can also use canned pumpkin. Typically goldens love it! DO NOT free feed your golden; instead feed a measured amount of food twice a day. Most adult goldens will eat 1 cup of premium dog food twice a day. Is your dog too fat? You should be able to feel its ribs and your dog should have a waist. We have found that we have a different view of what constitutes a fat dog than many veterinarians. They will typically allow dogs to carry more weight than is optimal. This perhaps is because they do not want to insult their clients and risk losing business. Letting your golden get too fat is like chopping years off of its life. We also see lots of hip problems with goldens, and keeping weight in check will give your dog better mobility. Fat goldens are an epidemic from our experience. We routinely get goldens into our rescue program that have to lose 30 — 40 pounds!!! Therefore we have a lot of experience at taking the weight off! It is very discouraging and upsetting when an adoptive home will let some weight creep back on. You may think you are loving your dog by giving it too much to eat, but if you really love it you will keep it at a normal weight. Remember — Ribs and Waists! Can you feel and see them on your dog? If not, break open the cans of green beans! The bottom line is read the ingredients, consult your veterinarian and research reliable resources. Making sure your dog has the best nutritional food will help to insure he has a long and healthy life. Here, from Whole Dog Journal, are some additional links for selecting best dry dog food and the best canned dog reviews. Goldens Rescued Since .Read the full disclosure here. Being a large and energetic dog, your golden retriever has a ravenous appetite and can eat a lot. However, overfeeding is never good and could be avoided with the help of a golden retriever feeding chart. Knowing how much to feed your golden retriever is always tricky but essential for their well-being and health. Goldens are prone to obesity and joint problems, which can only be exacerbated with an inadequate feeding plan. So, stay with me to find the right feeding plan and meal schedule for your goldie. Most first-time owners think their puppies should be chubby. In truth, golden retriever puppies are supposed to look lanky and act like they are always hungry when fed the correct amount of food. To encourage proper growth and development without making your pup obese, you will have to know how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. For example, cheaper foods use fillers and have a smaller amount of calories, thus you will have to feed more than you would when using premium large breed puppy foods. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. We all want our golden retriever puppies to be healthy and happy. We envision them running through a verdant field chasing a ball. Full of energy with the beautiful, lustrous golden coat. But, just like us, eating the proper food in the proper amounts will help your golden properly grow and thrive. After all, what we eat impacts how healthy we are. How much you should feed your golden retriever puppy will vary depending on the quality of food you feed, his age, his weight, his general health, and his activity level. Your golden will be growing for up to two years. And the amount of food during that time will have to be adjusted depending on his needs. Because most people feed kibble to their pup, this article will focus on that. Kibble is convenient and cost effective. Instead, they should be lanky and full of energy. They should love to eat their food with gusto. Instead, you should be able to feel his ribs when you pet him there. There should just be a thin coating of fat under his skin. And he should have a defined waistline. Of course you should check with your veterinarian to make such adjustments. And remember a young puppy should get only so much exercise a day. Their joints and bones are developing and can be damaged if the exercise is too extreme. Assuming you have an eight-week-old puppy, he should receive three to four meals a day. From eight weeks old until about five or six months old, three meals per day are advisable. Of course, feed at the same intervals every day and split the total amount per day in half to be given at each feeding. After about six months of age through adulthood, two feedings per day are the norm. Always check with your vet regarding how much and how often to feed. These are just guidelines. Feed him at the same distraction-free location so that he focuses on eating. As much as goldens love to eat, a young golden puppy is also very easily distracted. This can lead to possible health problems, including joint and bone problems. Goldens can easily become overweight. Free feeding can also lead to a picky eater. Some puppies figure out that if their buffets are always there, and they can just go graze at will. Most foods you purchase will have guidelines on their bag or box. When you first get your puppy, feed him the same food that the breeder or rescue fed him for a few weeks. Then, if you want to change his food, do so over at least 10 days. Add more of the new food and subtract more of the old food each day. After about five days, you should be giving him approximately 50 percent of the new food and 50 percent of the old food. Switching food over such a period of time will help prevent stomach upsets and diarrhea. Overfeeding will result not only in him becoming overweight but it will also make him grow too fast. Periodically—even weekly— test whether you can still feel his ribs without them protruding. You can then increase the amount he eats. You should also feed his last meal of the day at least 90 minutes before his bed time so that he can digest his food and potty before bed. A well-balanced, high-quality food should provide all the nutrients he requires. Golden puppies require a formula made for large-breed dogs. Puppy formulas for large-breed dogs regulate their growth. Eating too quickly can lead to digestive upsets and even bloat, which can be deadly. I rescued my golden retriever Riley when he was about six months old. To say that he ate as if it were his last meal would be an understatement. He had a voracious appetite. I bought one of the maze bowls to slow him down. The kibble is placed between each section of the bowl, and he had to forage for his food. It worked! He ate at a more normal pace. Of course, dogs should be given free access to fresh water. Other Feeding Options Although I concentrated in this article on feeding kibble to your new puppy, there are other options. There are some drawbacks to them because they may not be nutritionally complete, may be cost prohibitive, or may be too time-consuming to make. Wet Food Canned food alone or mixed with kibble is an option. But wet food alone is very expensive. He may become a picky eater. Feeding raw is controversial. Dehydrated raw foods reduce some of the risks. The ratio of calcium to phosphorous is crucial to puppy development. Homemade Diet Cooking for your best friend can be very appealing. And many people do. You know what ingredients and their quality are. But it has its drawbacks. Of course, the amount you feed is important for his growth rate and general health and well-being. But there is no one-size-fits-all in determining how much to feed a golden retriever puppy. Any amounts you see are just guidelines. Adjust them as necessary regarding your own special puppy. Do you have a golden retriever puppy? How did you determine what and how much to feed him? Please leave your comments in the section below. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. If you are bringing a Goldie into your family, you might also be aware of their reputation as food lovers. Your Goldie might want to eat anything and everything you put in their bowl — and maybe even anything left on an unattended plate. In this Golden Retriever feeding guide, Hypro Premium will take you through everything you need to know when it comes to food options for your pup. The best food for most young puppies is milk. If you are weaning a puppy, you can start to mix in a little dry kibble with their puppy milk to create a paste. You can feed this mix to your puppy up to four times a day, slowly reducing the amount of milk you mix in. Over time, your Goldie puppy will get more comfortable with solid foods, until you no longer need to include any milk in their diet. While chubby little puppies are cute, your Goldie should not build up too much excess fat once you start feeding them solids. Goldies go from a small 4kg puppy at 7 weeks old to an almost 30 kg adult dog in the space of only 10 months. At six months old your puppy will still be growing, but more slowly as they reach most of their body development milestones. This is why appropriate feeding in the first year of their life is vital to the overall health of your Goldie for years to come. Over time this can increase to up to 4 cups a day at 10 months old, though females should usually only need 3 cups a day. The amount you feed your puppy is often dependent on their size and sex. While they may have some growing left to do, it depends on your dog. Some Goldies will continue to experience growth spurts before their second birthday, while others will stay the same size. Large breeds can be at risk of growing too fast, which can make them more vulnerable to skeletal and weight problems when they get older. Golden retrievers are especially prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, which can be avoided through diet control. You should feed your Goldie between 3 — 4 cups of food per day over two meals. Adult dogs and puppies have different nutritional needs. This is important to take into consideration as you are establishing a feeding schedule for a Golden Retriever puppy. Puppies require more calories to support their rapid growth than adult dogs, but they also have much smaller stomachs, which means they get fuller faster. Because of this, puppies can easily overeat, especially Golden Retrievers. You can help your puppy avoid overeating by allowing them a short amount of time to eat, and then removing their bowl. All puppies grow a lot during their first year, but large breed puppies are more likely to suffer from negative health consequences as a result. In order to provide your Golden Retriever puppy with the most appropriate food to support their rapid growth, consider choosing a large breed puppy food. Goldie puppies need lots of protein, fibre, and fatty acids to support the development of their bodies and provide them with energy. These foods also take into account the difference in nutrient digestion between small and large breeds. Too much of these nutrients can cause your large breed puppy to develop skeletal abnormalities. So how much do you feed a Golden Retriever? Your adult Goldie could need anywhere between and 1, calories per day. The amount of food you feed your dog will be determined by a few important factors. The first thing to consider is the sex of your dog. On average, your male Golden Retriever will need slightly more food than a female dog. Senior dogs will usually be less active and so will need less food. Goldies in particular can have a lot of variation in the amount of food they need on a daily basis. No matter how much you feed your dog, it is ideal that you feed your adult Golden Retriever two meals a day at evenly spaced time intervals. Feeding your dog twice, once in the morning and again in the evening, can be useful for establishing a routine and avoiding overfeeding. This routine can also include exercise, and is useful for encouraging healthy behaviour around food and toilet training. Special Considerations Your Golden Retriever could be predisposed to several health conditions that are important to consider when you make decisions about their diet. Firstly, Golden Retrievers are known for their beautiful coats, but their skin can often become infected. Goldies love swimming, but this can cause problems if water irritates their skin. They can also be susceptible to atopic dermatitis, which causes extreme itchiness, resulting in licking and biting behaviours in dogs that can cause even more damage. For dogs prone to skin and coat issues, a fish-based diet can help alleviate symptoms. Fish contains plenty of fatty acids, which support coat and skin health, and rarely triggers any allergic reaction in dogs. Goldies often benefit from healthy grains in their diet, especially as avoiding them can actually leave your dog more vulnerable to nutritional dilated cardiomyopathy, or nutritional DCM. This heart disease is common in Golden Retrievers, and can be triggered by consuming too much grain-free pet food that contains legumes like lentils and peas. You should consider feeding your Golden Retriever foods that are full of grains and proteins like chicken or fish. These are the benefits and drawbacks of the three most popular options — wet food, a raw food diet, and dry food. Wet food can be a great option for dogs that need plenty of protein and fat, like working dogs or dogs with certain health conditions. It also hydrates your dog while they eat, which can be useful for dogs suffering from any illness. For dogs with highly restrictive diets, raw food prepared by you can be a great way to avoid allergens. You can have complete control over a raw diet, which does require a lot more work on your part, but can have great results. For instance, a Golden Retriever with heart issues should eat a low salt diet, which can be easier to achieve if you are preparing their meals from scratch. However, low quality kibbles tend to be made up of a lot of low quality fillers, which can be hard for your pup to digest. Whatever option you choose for your Goldie, make sure it is suitable for large breeds and contains high quality ingredients. This will help prevent degenerative health disorders in the long run. Your Golden Retriever will probably love food, and will probably try to eat anything you put in front of them, which means you need to help them avoid the negative consequences of overeating. Golden retrievers, like other large and active breeds, need plenty of exercise. Not only is this vital to their physical health, but it also ensures they grow up well socialised and mentally stimulated. As your Goldie grows from a puppy to an adult dog, the amount of meals they need a day will reduce as their digestive systems become more developed. Your dog will need two meals a day, once in the evening and once in the morning, from the age of 6 months.

Application Evaluations Responsible Labradoodle breeders should screen every applicant interested in a puppy. Most online applications have questions that help them determine the most eligible ones to bring home a puppy from one of their litters. Examples of questions include how long someone will leave the puppy alone throughout the day, whether or not they have a fenced yard, and their general home and work lifestyle. They Keep Their Dogs in Stable Living Conditions Many Labradoodle breeders raise their litters in their homes to protect them from outdoor diseases and natural elements. If they have a kennel, it should be sturdy and have temperature regulation when seasonal weather changes to keep their mothers and litters comfortable. Transparent Communication Many breeders should reach out to eligible applicants with updates about their puppy until the day they take them home. Breeders usually create puppy contracts that tell owners what to expect after taking a puppy home, from health guarantees and specific diet instructions to spay or neuter protocols. For example, health checks performed by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals test breedable sires and dams for genetic elbow, hip, eye, and knee issues. Quick story: We gave 2 of our 6 month old pups a chew treat. When pup 1 was finished with hers, she tried to get the treat away from pup 2. After 10 minutes of relentless trying, pup 1 was still not successful. So she went over by the door and rang the bell to go outside. When I got up and opened the door, pup 2 got up and went outside. Pup 1 walked over and successfully picked up the sought after chew toy. True story. Active and quite comical, they are a treat to be around. It is very important that you are this dog's firm but calm, consistent pack leader and provide them with daily mental and physical exercise. Read More About Our Australian Labradoodles and their origin This classic example of logical and planned crossbreeding was created in the country of Australia in the s. The goal of the Australian clubs is to create a new "breed" with the best attributes of the original breeds. The original objective was to produce assistance dogs that do not shed hair for people with allergies. Australians, on the other hand, have taken the Labradoodle a few steps further. In mid it was announced that the Australian Labradoodle was not just a Labrador x Poodle cross , but was a breed in its own right developed over many years with particular goals in mind. To accomplish these goals, further development was done with parent breed infusions added to the already blooming Labrador x Poodle cross lines. The developers of the breed sought out the best way in which to compliment the Australian Labradoodle breed, and to develop the authentic qualities that they find and love in these dogs. In the very first Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was written which reflected these goals. The Australian Labradoodle currently consists of 6 different breeds in its origin. We truly believe our Australian Labradoodles are the best dog available and will make a great addition to your family. Yes, this Pug body harness is a little limited in terms of features, but those new to body harnesses may consider it as a starting point. Some people and their dogs are unsure about harnesses and look to experiment. The ThinkPet is a low cost, easy and basic walking harness which many people get to experiment with. It also has the additional benefit of being brightly designed and highly reflective. The central layer of this harness is designed from a breathable mesh. There are two separate points of adjustment located at the neck and chest, which makes this harness not only easier to put on but to adjust to your Pugs body shape. Despite the reflective strip surface, which is cleverly piped into the harness material, this harness can be easily cleaned by hand or machine wash. Why Choose A Harness for your Pug? As with all dog breeds, training is key to a pleasant walk. If you have a Pug that pulls on the leash — you probably find it frustrating and worry they may be hurting themselves. This can be especially true with a flat-faced breed like a French Bulldog or a Pug where breathing can become difficult, and the airways should be kept clear. A good dog harness should help to control this behaviour as well as aid in training your pug. Pug zoomies that mad moment when your dog is bursting with energy and suddenly dashes everywhere can also require a lot of energy to control. A good Pug harness should help to control this behaviour as well as aid in training your dog. This is particularly beneficial while they are still a pug puppy as it introduces good practices. A good harness can also help with health problems such as canine hip dysplasia CHD as well as mobility issues for older Pugs. There are also support harnesses specially designed for issues such as hip dysplasia, arthritis, knee and mobility problems. They can also help with carrying or lifting your dog if needed. These are outside the scope of this article, though it is worth investigating or asking a veterinary expert if your Pug requires additional assistance. Developing hip dysplasia in dogs can be familiar with some breeds. Legg-Perthes disease , for example, can affect the head of the femur thigh bone. Over time the femoral head deteriorates, causing a break down of the hip joint. This may be restricted to a single hip socket and cause arthritis in the hind legs. Although surgery can help, a good harness in formative years can help balance weight, and a rehabilitation harness can aid in recovery. Other minor issues sometimes associated with pugs include elongated palate, Stenotic Nares , and obesity — all of which may affect your choice of harness. Collar or Harness for a Pug? Pugs are a brachycephalic breed flat-faced breed of dog which unfortunately leads to breathing problems. While collars are generally safe, dogs which pull can put additional pressure on the neck and throat. Throat injury can lead to breathing issues in many breeds and could exacerbate those in Pugs. It is, therefore, worth considering investing in a harness to walk your Pug safely. Not only will this reduce pressure on the Pugs thick neck, nasal airways, windpipe and head, but it also helps control your Pug, train your dog and reduce pulling behaviour. Harnesses may not solve this problem entirely as some can still be slipped out of, we will discuss this later, but this has been considered in the collection. Finally, harnesses are much more comfortable and adjustable than a regular collar. You should use a Pug dog collar for regular wear, quick toilet trips and for those all-important ID tags. Types of Harnesses for Pugs Choosing a dog harness is not often as simple as picking the best fitting one from the shelf. Different harnesses do different things with some for general wear and others for helping with problematic behaviours or even mobility issues. Pug Harness Vest These are the simplest and often most affordable harnesses available. They tend to be simple, comfortable, easy to put on and wear and have few features. Materials can include mesh, plastics and nylon, simple over the head, figure-8 and some are even reversible to give different styles. Given their simplicity, there are a few reasons to have these harness vest types. The first could be to get your Pug used to wearing a dog harness. When trying to introduce a dog to collars, harnesses or halters — they can sometimes react badly. Vests can also be great for dogs who are well behaved or do not tend to pull on the leash. The types available are: Back Clip. Superior Comfort A Safety For Small Dogs 5 Four of my dogs are huge beasts that have special harnesses that they wear when I take them for a walk; it allows me to feel confident that they are under control especially if they see a cat roaming around and I know that even if they start pulling on the leash they aren't going to get the air choked out of them. For my small dog I needed something that he wouldn't be able to wiggle out of; he is a true escape artist and this harness is the only one that he has never been able to get out of when we've been on walks. It is soft and comfortable on his body and he still has a full range of motion when it is on him; getting it on and off of him takes about a minute if he isn't jumping around and excited when he sees me pull it out of the hall closet. One of the best things about this harness is that I don't have to take his neck collar off when I put this on him; he still has his registration and vet tags on him so if he should happen to pull a disappearing act at least I know that if someone finds him they will know that he is indeed a pet and not a stray. I originally got this in gray but opted to get a second one in orange so that he is easier to spot if we go for a walk in the evening. If I am walking to the store in the evening I usually put the orange one on him so I can see exactly where he is in relation to my feet so I don't accidentally step on him. The harnesses are machine washable and have help up perfectly since I got them. I know that when he is wearing one there's almost no chance that he will be able to wiggle his way out of it and that when he starts pulling on the leash when he gets excited he isn't putting undue pressure on his neck or throat.

He is so smart!! He is an AKC S. White Lab Puppy!! Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Recommended by D Magazine. We have bred and raised rare Labrador Retrievers for 20 years. We consider ourselves boutique breeders; we usually have one litter at a time, and rarely two. Our mature dogs are family members, each and every one. They are raised on our 20 acre Arabian horse ranch, which is fenced in its entirety for the safety of our animals. We have ponds to swim in, birds to chase, and shade trees to relax under on those hot Texas Days. All our puppies are birthed in our home. As each baby is born, Russ and I fuss over each arrival with all the anticipated joy of grandparents. To put it very simply, we adore our dogs. I love the diversity of genetic possibilities. While it is true that we are famous for the rare color of our Labradors-there is so much more that goes into it. Everyone wants a beautiful stunning puppy that stops traffic. We go even further. We try to minimize negative behavior traits, for example, our line of pups and mature dogs are quieter and will rarely excessively bark. We have all experienced or witnessed a neurotic or aggressive dog. This is the type of animal we all wish to avoid. Our Labradors are known for their loyalty, intelligence and charisma-as well as their stunning great looks. This is an easy statement to say, but we can brag for hours on the accomplishments of our labradors. These are all great accomplishments, but the best compliment we ever receive are our heartfelt letters, Christmas Cards and emails from our families that just have to let us know how their dog is unique and truly the best dog ever. We smile because we know, they are our treasures and they are our family members too. We completely understand. My passion for as long as I can remember has been animals. In addition to our rare Labradors, we also isolate unusual genetic qualities of our Arabian Horses. These two passions grew together over time. Horses are also exotic animals that just capture our imaginations and attentions. I have spent 20 years breeding rare Arabian Horses. It is because of the decades spent studying our animals that I see more than most when they look at the animal. I actually see what type of eye is most engaging, the shape of the eye, the type of expression that speaks to us. I can go on and on, but I believe you see what I mean. Legacy-Labs was not created as a business venture. It was created out of a love for the animal. Some people might say that our pups are too pricey but we believe that through decades of breeding, we offer one of the best dogs available on the market. We feel they are priceless. The demand for our puppies has grown substantially over the years yet we refuse to mass produce. It takes all our care and attention to keep all their needs fulfilled. I feel committed to each and every puppy, each and every family. We are committed to the physical, emotional and mental strength of each dog and pup at our facility. This is our commitment to you, as well as our pups. At this time we have three males that are our main sires at Legacy-Labs. Our males do not stand at stud to the public at this time. Please remember we support Limited Registration. Legacy Alamo We support limited registration. Located 20 miles from Downtown Dallas on I.We appreciate your interest and invite your inquiries. For driving directions go to the contact us page. We invite you to browse the happy families we have helped create on our reviews page. We whelp and raise all our puppies in our master bathroom, kitchen and outside at times during the day and back in the bathroom at night from weeks. These puppies are not kept outside for any extended period or overnight, period. They are constantly supervised while under our care. Our labs range in color from snow white to very-light cream. They love to play fetch, stay by your side, and they can be trained to hunt. We breed both the English and American type of Labradors and our litters are a combination of the two. Our primary concerns in order of importance are: Health, Temperament, Socialization, and then Coat Color. We Live Stream the puppies from the birthing process through 7 weeks of age! Click here for our videos Your puppy comes with limited registration. Full registration is possible for established breeders and show prospects. We are very careful to insure our puppies go to fantastic homes, while insuring that there is no possibility of adding one single dog to the unwanted dog population. We interact with our puppies constantly. We introduce them to Bio Sensor and Early Neurological Stimulation at 3 days and continue until they are 15 days old. As they get older, 4 weeks we allow them in the kitchen, family area, and in the back yard. They are well socialized with adults human as well as other adult dogs in a warm and loving atmosphere. We can hold them in our arms, on their backs and cradle them like a baby. We pride ourselves on producing sound, soft, teddy bear-like puppies that grow into wonderful house pets, service and therapy dogs. We don't have a kennel. Labradors are very affectionate and social creatures. BUT, if kept isolated, they can develop habits such as digging, chewing, barking, and generally destroying anything in sight. We socialize and handle our puppies several times throughout the day and exposed to all the normal and sometimes, not-so-normal goings-on of family life. We try to expose them to as many different sounds as possible so that when they come to your home, some of these sounds are familiar. We also begin using a crate as a group and individually as soon as age appropriate. When it is time to go to their new homes, our puppies are very close to being potty-trained, but are in no way house-broken, they will let you know when they need to go outside, but they can't hold it for too long. We regularly get reports of successful potty-training as well as "sit", "shake", and "lay-down" at eight to nine weeks! We offer a "head start" for our puppies in a loving environment. We grow very fond of our puppies and it's very hard to see them leave, but we know that we have found what we think will be the ideal forever home for our pups. We love getting pictures and updates of our puppies. And we encourage all puppy owners to keep communications open and send lots of pictures as they grow. All our puppies are up to date on shots and worming. They will be micro-chipped, preregistered with the American Kennel Club, and come with a written contract that they are clear of inherited hip problems for a period of 30 months. And since our dogs are tested before breeding, it enables us to also cover over genetic defects for the life of your puppy. We also test the heart, verify full detention, and normal patella. Registration is AKC Limited. Inquire for Full Registration. The color will be registered as yellow. Our primary concerns in order of importance: Health, Temperament and Socialization, and then Coat Color. We have working labs in homes all around the United States and some homes with 2 and 3 Sugarland labs. It's no secret labs can come in many different sizes, colors and energy levels. While I have much respect for the lean, hard working "American style" lab, I fell in love with and raise the "English style" lab with thicker bones, blockier heads and calmer demeanor also known as the "gentleman's gundog" So if you are looking for a "white lab puppy" to add to your family you are at the right place. We offer "English style" lab puppies for sale to approved loving homes only. Our puppies come in white, yellow and black. A White lab is not rare and does not carry an extra gene, it is just the lightest shade of yellow and registers as yellow with AKC. ALL of my babies are born in my home under full time care. I have been blessed to get to raise labs for 10 plus years and I have lots of references upon request. I stay in touch with alot of my puppy people and get tons of updates. So I proudly offer a discount to our men and women in all branches of our military active or retired fire fighters, police officers, and our repeat buyers. In the last ten years of raising my furbabies, I have met some really cool people and they included their Sugarland doggie in their special moments. Thank you all for sharing with me. Below are just some of the beautiful moments. Please don't hesitate to ask me anything. I will help you best I can. And of course be aware of the scammers.A few years ago my website was stolen by folks in Nigeria and stole my champion pedigrees and used them for their bulldogs. Pedigrees and health testing by request. Our dogs health is a top priority and we use Nuvet vitamins. .That breaks down to 52 cents a day Anyone can order even if you are not getting a puppy from me. Clementine was born on Aug 2, .She has become such a part of our family. She is the most beautiful dog I have ever seen. Our daughter is a professional photographer and took these pictures. We have plenty more where these came from :-D. And more than her beauty her personality is ridiculously incredible. She is still a pup and gets into trouble now and then. She loves to play. She loves everyone she meets. And she loves to just hang out with us. She was in the car with the 2 of us and our two 10 year old twin granddaughters for two straight 10 hour days on the way there and 2 more full days on the way back and could not have been more perfect. She just seems to know when to be spunky and when to be mellow. We could not be happier. We waited 11 months for her and paid an arm and a leg for her, but we would do it again a thousand times over to get her. Thank you so much for breeding your dogs. We love our little Clementine. Straight away I knew that a lady as lovely as this, could only breed amazing dogs! Thank you Sherry — you truly have changed our lives and we are so proud to be part of this amazing Swissridge family! Trek is an amazing little guy and we fell in love with him instantly. Sponsor Meet Leo My name is Leo. I am a 4 year old Lab mix who is extremely loyal, playful, and very smart. My favorite things to do is play fetch with the chuck it ball in the yard. I get so fixated on that ball that I could chase it all day. I love to be outside with walks or chasing the ball. I also love squeaky toys, and the lab in me loves the water. At the end of the day I will curl up at your feet, and when inside, I will follow you around the house, and watch tv with you. I would do best with a fenced in yard, where I can let all my energy out. I know the basic commands. Sit, wait, come, lay down, get the ball, enough, and go potty. When I hear that command, I go into my crate, and wait until things calm down. I am crate trained, and find that to be my safe space when things get hectic. This is where I eat my meals. I am not foodaggressive. You can take my bowl away, and I will be fine. I will also let you know when I need to go outside and need to go potty. I am very protective, and loyal. My previous owner had a 14 month old son, and I was very gentle with him. He would even give me his food, and I would gently take from his hand. Also, I got very close with children who I knew, and was very good with them. Once I get to know you and I feel safe, treats help, I really love treats I will follow you around, and am very loving. Because I am very protective to my owner, I do not like reactive dogs. I do not like cats. I had to leave my previous home because of this. I have gotten in a few dog fights, but no serious harm has come from it. I do need help with this with either an owner who knows how to deal with reactive dogs and extra training to minimize distractions. On walks, I am told to sit, then wait as other dogs pass. I have lived with another dog before for 3 years beagle mix , and we are fine together. But it took a few times of us being in the same area to get comfortable with each other. I need a slow, controlled introduction to other dogs. Considering Leo for adoption?
