In puppies stress often results in diarhorrea. Mopping up vile smelling liquid with a house full of guests is not fun for you at all. It is probably not much fun for the puppy either. Feeling Poorly Puppies have immature immune systems. Moving the puppy to a new home exposes him to germs he may not have met before. This can exacerbate any sickness and diarrhea. Visiting relatives or having them visit you increases this risk still further. In other words there is a good chance your tiny puppy will be a little unwell over Christmas. This could put a bit of a damper on your celebrations! Some puppies not all need to empty their bladders every 15 to 30 minutes throughout the day. It is a full time job just watching and making sure the puppy toilets in the right place. You will have less time available over Christmas than you think. You might not be at work but it is amazing how much time cooking, wrapping, entertaining and visiting take up. Puppies and Christmas Visits Not so long ago I read a forum thread by a prospective new puppy owner who was planning to spend Christmas away with relatives. And to take her new 8 week old puppy with her. Various family members would be camping around the house. And there would be no room for a crate. Not even a small one. These are the sorts of scenarios that commonly arise over the Christmas period. As we cram relatives into small spaces in our homes or pile ourselves into theirs. I am pretty experienced at helping them settle in. Crate or no crate. And I want to explain why. Even if a puppy has had two or three weeks to settle in before Christmas, moving him again may well cause upset tummies. He will have to learn a whole new toileting routine, and be exposed again to all sorts of new challenges to his immature immune system. Seasonal Disputes! For those that go ahead with such a challenge, a crate is not optional, it is essential. Yet when many people are packed into a normal sized house, room for a crate is unlikely to be a priority. Relatives may not agree with you on the best location for this large piece of metal in their home. Seasonal disputes are common over the Christmas break as we all adjust to spending more time together than normal. Adding a fight about where to put a crate is not going to help. And you could well end up with your brand new puppy shut away and neglected. At which point he may learn to howl the house down until one of the other guests picks him up and cuddles him which they will. You will then have a puppy that has learned that screaming for attention works wonders. And he will be only to happy to scream even louder next time he is left alone. What About Night Times? A puppy may well yell and protest at night too if crated. How will your fellow housemates feel about that on Christmas Eve? Many new puppy owners think that they can simply pop their tiny puppy into bed with them at night. And once you fall asleep you will have no chance of intervening when they chew through the cable on your bedside lamp or demolish your mobile phone. Without a crate or something very similar, you will have no control over where your puppy goes. Or what he does in the room you sleep in once you have dropped off to sleep. If indeed you are able to go to sleep at all. Christmas Puppy For those that go ahead with their Christmas puppy there are other concerns. But by the time you and the other house guests have trodden in a few poos in their bare feet, the novelty of the puppy will have worn off. The first days with a brand new puppy, though stressful, should be a joyous time. A time of bonding with and learning all about this tiny new life that has joined your family. Bringing your puppy home during the strains and stresses of Christmas risks sucking away all this joy and excitement. So we must emphasise that there can be times, when bringing a puppy home at Christmas is a joyful event that works out perfectly. As my website states, I am not like other breeders in many ways. First, I want to explain how the average Labrador breeder raises their pups the first few weeks of their life. They expect these tiny pups without their senses fully developed to find their way to a nipple without being smothered. I understand that this is what dogs do in the wild, but this is also why many puppies die in the wild. .Then, on top of that they hope that each of the pups will get enough milk on it's own to make it through the 1st week of life. They expect the Lab mom to do all the work, so they don't have to lose a wink of sleep. This is all very sad to say but it's true. I, on the other hand, care about each individual pup's life, I care that each and every one of them survive so that they can live a full and happy life. So, I make sure that each individual pup is given outstanding care. How do I do this? I began with hand raising each one of my pups the first 3 weeks of its life. What do I mean by hand raise my pup? It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. I am up now about to give my pups their 3 am feeding. Hope this helps you all understand what is put into each litter. When the pups are 6 to 7 weeks of age, I will contact you to set up an appointment for you choose and pick up your pup at 8 weeks of age. If you had first deposit in for a male pup you will have first choice of all the males available. If you have second deposit in, you will have the next appointment to choose from the males that are left and so forth. This order of reserving pups would also apply to the females as well. We honor all reservations on a puppy by not selling the puppy to anyone else. So if you are interested in a litter and don't want to make a reservation until "you see the litter". An appointment can be made to view the left-over puppies when they are 10 weeks old, and no sooner. No appointments will be allowed at a younger age, except for the families that made a prior reservation. We will not allow our baby puppies to be exposed to potential life threatening viruses from people that are just "shopping". We wait until all puppies that have been reserved are safely home, before we show any left-over puppies. Any left-over pups will be at least 10 weeks of age before any viewings are allowed, to insure they have at least had 2 sets of shots in. Neither can stay clean for very long. Put them in their Sunday best and a minute later they are dirty. And the more smears on their faces the happier they look! But there is a big difference between the two. You can pop your child in the tub any time you want. But you must be careful bathing your puppy. They will always need a bath but you must wait! Puppies at any age like to get dirty. But it is not smart to bathe your puppy when it is too young. You should only bathe puppies that are older than 12 weeks. Until they are old enough you might have to settle cleaning your puppy with a sponge bath. Before your dog is 12 weeks old the less water the better. Just spot clean your puppy with a damp cloth. Use a mild dog shampoo on the puppies sensitive skin and hair. Dry your puppy off right away. Depending on the size of your puppy the sink or large bowl might be the easiest way to bathe. For larger pups use the bathtub. This will remove excess dirt and hair. Brushing helps rid the dog of shedding hair. This will also prevent tangles or matted hair after the bath. You do not want your puppy to be burned or to be too cold in the bath. Make sure the bath is comfortable for the dog. A rubber bath mat under the dogs feet will make them comfortable. Sometimes the dogs can slip and hurt themselves during bath time. You must select the correct shampoo for your dog. Use only puppy shampoo on your dog. These shampoos and conditioners are designed for your pup. Human shampoo and dish soap can be too strong for your delicate puppy. If you can use a hose or handheld sprayer, this will make the rinsing process easier. But make sure the flow of water is not too much for the little guy. Use a gentle spray or mist, but make sure they are well rinsed and no soap is left. Bathing your dog is not hard. It is much easier when you make it enjoyable for you and your dog. This may be the first time your dog gets a bath but certainly not the last. Make sure the bath is a calm pleasant experience. They may not love taking a bath but the easier you make it on the dog they may not mind bathing as much. Maybe they will even enjoy taking a bath! This is your chance to thoroughly clean your puppy or dog to remove body oil, dirt, and debris, slather the entire body with products that will promote healthy skin and fur, and use something to control odors and keep your Pug smelling nice. There are some bathing missteps that can actually cause issues such as overly dry skin, skin reactions like itching or rash, or striped fur, and not properly drying your Pug can contribute to skin yeast infections. So, this article will cover the exact steps to successfully bathe a Pug for maximum benefits. How Often a Pug Needs a Bath Most Pugs need to be given a bath once every 3 weeks, even if they appear to be clean and smell just fine. Baths are given at this interval because the body is constantly producing oils that are excreted through the hair follicles. These serve as a natural barrier from external elements and help keep a dog's skin moisturized. But, these do not evaporate; rather, they accumulate. At about the 3-week mark, there is enough body oil on a Pug that skin pores can become blocked and a bad smell can develop if these are not washed away. A bath, done properly, will effectively wash those oils away without stripping the skin and fur, leaving your Pug with a 'clean slate' that will mark the beginning of the 3-week cycle. Another thing that happens during a bath is that loose hairs are freed. And, while the same time interval does not apply to this method of removing dead hairs from a Pug's coat as it does in regard to body oils, it can be advantageous for this to occur every 3 weeks since this can decrease the amount of work you do when brushing the coat to keep shedding under control. Note that you can give your Pug a bath more often than this if the circumstances warrant it; for example, if your Pug rolled around in a muddy puddle or otherwise got so dirty that spot-cleaning won't work or if there are skin issues that require the use of a specialty shampoo. Where to Give a Pug a Bath Young puppies, due to their size and possible fear of water, often do best when given a bath in a kitchen sink. Everything should be removed from the sink and it should be cleaned well and rinsed out. Adult Pugs can also be given baths in a sink, if it is large enough. But, many do best with baths in a bathtub. If the weather is warm enough that an outside water hose will not be too cold, baths can be given outdoors as long as you have a clean area to do so with one option being a small kiddie pool. Supplies Needed When Giving a Bath Of course, just wetting a dog down does not qualify as a bath since it won't accomplish the mission of removing body oils, dirt, and debris and applying products that are good for the skin and coat. So, you will need a few things: 1. A brush or mitt for pre-bath grooming. Since baths will loosen a whole bunch of hairs on this high-shedding breed , it's a good idea to go over the coat right before you give your Pug a bath. This will help keep the amount of hairs freed during the bathing process to a manageable level. Though you can use a slicker brush, you may find that a mitt like the Delomo Enhanced Grooming Glove makes this much easier. And, it's great to be able to accomplish this without having to hold onto anything. The goal is to use something that will cleanse away oils, not just skim over them, and be good for a Pug's skin. At the same time, steer clear of soaping agents as these can be very harsh, causing dryness; instead, opt for plant-based cleansers. Certain additives should be avoided which are known to cause irritation or allergic reactions; this includes synthetic preservatives, parabens, phthalates, sulfates, polyethylene glycol, and artificial perfumes or dyes. In addition, the pH balance should be between 6. Wash-out conditioner. When a dog is given a bath, this triggers the hair cuticles the protective outer layer to open up. This is great, since they can be properly cleansed. But, a wash-out conditioner should then be used to smooth these back down. If not, a Pug's fur will be vulnerable to outside elements that can quickly lead to overly dry fur; it will lose its shine and have an unpleasant straw-like texture. One recommended product is Earthbath Oatmeal and Aloe Conditioner which does a great job in smoothing down the hair cuticles and is excellent for keeping the skin and fur properly moisturized. A scrub brush. This is optional; however, particularly for adult Pugs, you may find this to be very useful. All fawn Pugs and some black Pugs have very dense double-layered coats. It can be very tiring on the hands to work shampoo all the way down through the thick layers of fur to the skin where it needs to do its job. And, a bath brush can be a great way to snag up all of the hairs that typically become loose when Pugs are given baths. This has uniquely designed rubber tips that are awesome at latching onto dead hairs while offering a pleasant massage, a slip-through hand guide so that your hand doesn't cramp up, and it's very durable. Cotton balls. Though Pugs have folded ears that somewhat help keep out external water, any water that does enter the ears can lead to ear infections. So, it is best to play it safe and loosely place cotton in the opening of the ear canals to act as a barrier. Two thin washcloths and an absorbent towel. One washcloth will be to clean your Pug's face, including around the eye area and wrinkles. The other washcloth will be used to dry your Pug's ears and in between the toes since these two areas are prone to skin yeast infections when moisture is left behind. The towel, as you may have guessed, is to dry your Pug's body. A non-slip mat optional. If you find that your Pug slips and slides around, and particularly if this startled your dog or makes giving baths difficult, place a non-slip mat into the sink or tub before you start to help your Pug keep their footing. Step-by-Step Instructions for Giving a Pug a Bath Prep: 1: Give the coat a good brushing with a slicker brush, grooming glove, or other chosen grooming tool to remove dead hairs. This includes the shampoo, conditioner, bath brush, washcloths, and towel. Bathing Instructions: 1: Fill the tub or sink with 1 to 3 inches of luke-warm water before you place your Pug in. Test the temperature with your inner wrist. You can tear away pieces from a cotton ball to do this. Do not place the cotton deep. Ideally, this is done using a spray nozzle, but if you do not have this option, you can use a small bowl or cup. At first, water may roll off the coat and body oils may prevent water from getting through the coat, so make sure that the coat is thoroughly soaked. You will want to apply this liberally since skimping on the shampoo can lead to only partial cleansing of body oils. Then, use the washcloth to scrub the underbelly and genital area. Using a nozzle works well to reach down through the coat to make sure all the shampoo is appropriately rinsed out with no residue left behind. Use a generous amount to cover all areas of the body. Massage this in for 2 to 5 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. Remove your Pug and allow them to shake to remove excess water. Then, wrap your dog in an absorbent towel, patting and gently rubbing in the direction of the fur growth. Remove the cotton from the ears.
