Once you reach the minute threshold, you can step it up to an hour and then a few hours. It's important that you do this daily so your puppy gets used to it and knows that you will always come back. Tire Your Dog Out A tired dog is a good dog. This is especially true for puppies. You want to make sure that your puppy is tuckered out before you leave them alone. This way, they're more likely to take a nap while you're gone. Dogs need to tire out physically and mentally before you leave the house to make sure they don't get too anxious. For the physical part, take them on a long walk or run. For the mental part, you can do training with a clicker that makes them think. For example, place two bottles on the floor and only give them a treat and a click once they touched the right one. You can easily tire out a dog mentally in mins with this kind of exercise. Just act like it's any other day and you're going to work or run errands. The same goes for when you come back home. Don't greet your puppy right away or make too much of a fuss about it. Just simply walk in, put your things down, wait a few minutes until they calm down and then you can greet them. What happens when you make a big scene when you leave is like you are winding up a toy. Your dog gets more and more excited and anxious and the second you leave, that is when they blow up. Just think about it, in their natural environment, would their mother make a big scene when she leaves them? No, she would just leave. Do the same! I know it's hard, I always want to cuddle Bailey when I leave, but it's better for him to just stay calm. Create a Calm and Safe Environment When you're leaving your puppy alone, you want to make sure that they're in a calm and safe environment. One good trick I do is turn on the radio and the TV so there's some noise in the background. This way, it doesn't feel so quiet and empty for Bailey when I leave. Also, make sure their cage is open so they can go in and out if you don't want them to stay there while you are gone. Also, leave a few toys around for them that they can chew on. Try Puzzle Toys or a Frozen Kong To keep your puppy entertained while you're gone, try giving them a puzzle toy or filling up a Kong with some dog food and freezing it. This way, they have to work for their food and it keeps them occupied for a little bit. There are a ton of Kong Toys out there, that you can stuff with treats, kibble or even peanut butter. Consider Doggy Daycare or a Dog Sitter If you're going to be gone for a long time or if you just don't feel comfortable leaving your puppy alone yet, consider a doggy daycare or hiring a dog sitter. Doggy daycare is a great option for them to socialize, but it shouldn't be the first time they encounter other dogs as it can be overwhelming. A dog sitter is a great option if you want someone to come over and check on your puppy, take them on walks or just play with them. You can find a reputable dog sitter or dog walker on websites like Rover. Just think about how it would feel for you if you're hungry and someone locks you in a room for hours. Not fun, right? The same goes for your puppy. They need to have a full stomach so they're not too anxious while you're gone. You also want to make sure that they have access to fresh water at all times. Can Goldendoodle Puppies be Left Alone? Yes, goldendoodle puppies can be left alone, depending on how old they are. The simple formula is if your puppy is for example 3 months old, they can be left alone for 3 hours. However, all puppies are different so make sure your puppy is comfortable with being left alone. Conclusion Leaving your Goldendoodle home alone doesn't have to be a stressful experience for you or your puppy. We can gather this information simply by observing wolves, dingoes and other wild dog species that live in tight-knit family groups with complex social lives and hierarchies. The domestic dog was slowly bred down from these wild counterparts to be even more companion-oriented so as to be able to work closely with his master performing many useful jobs such as herding and hunting. Despite most dogs no longer having dedicated jobs, today in the 21st century, we often ask a lot more of our dogs. We want them to be our best friends and closest companions and yet allow us to work full time. We want them to be the very best snugglers on the couch while we watch Netflix, but we also want them to be calm, well-behaved indoors while we are gone for hours at a time. This is quite the psychological challenge for our dear furry friends, but one that they can overcome if we set them up for success from a young age. Poodles, and therefore doodles, are known for being incredibly people-oriented and intelligent. They have often been described as almost humanlike in both their overall smarts and emotional intuition. The result is the most devoted companion you could ever ask for, but again, the downside is that this is not a breed that is content to be left alone for the entire day. The typical doodle will want to be with you in any room of the house — often waiting for you outside of the shower, following you to the bathroom, etc. To have a happy, well-behaved doodle, an owner must be prepared to spend time with their pup and should not be surprised that their doodle prefers to be at their feet or on their lap all day every day. The good news is that doodles are highly trainable and adaptable. So as long as you train them to be alone from an early age, they can adapt to your schedule within reason. When it comes to leaving a puppy alone, we strongly recommend crate training Puppies need to be confined in a safe area when away from their owners as they are prone to getting themselves into all sorts of trouble. Chewing on electrical cords, eating plants, or swallowing tiny objects all seem like great ideas to the 8-week-old puppy mind! Keeping your puppy in a kennel while you are gone not only keeps them safe, but when utilized correctly, the crate actually feels like a safe, cozy place to your pup and will help keep him calm and at rest when he must be left alone. Please note that early introduction to crate training is critical. Finding a breeder who exposes a puppy to crates and individual time before they go home definitely puts your pup one step ahead with crate training. At Jenna Lee Designer Doodles, we begin crate introduction when our pups are 3 weeks old. By the time they go home at 8 weeks, each pup spends an hour in their kennel alone daily. Assuming your pup has been properly introduced and feels comfortable in and around their kennel see our article on crate training for tips! You want to consider their potty needs as well as social and energy needs, both of which are greater now than they will be when your pup is an adult. For an week old pup, we often recommend starting with hours in their kennel at a time. At weeks of age puppies have very small bladders so they need to potty at least that often during the day. So short play sessions followed by short naps work best. The good news is that puppies grow up fast. By the time they are weeks old, your pup can stretch his alone time to 3 hours. And by weeks of age, hours is attainable. During this puppy phase, make sure your pup has frequent access to water throughout the day before you plan to leave him for a longer period of time so that he avoids drinking a whole bowl of water right before kennel time! And of course, a potty break right before you leave is critical. He will still have a lot of energy, but he will be able to go for more sustained periods of exercise and settle down for longer periods of time. We do not recommend leaving a doodle, no matter how old, alone for longer than hours at a time. As a high energy, social breed, doodles need at least some kind of interaction and activity half-way through a full work day. Coming home for your lunch break to play fetch with your pup, hiring a dog walker, or sending your pup to doggy daycare to play with some four-legged friends, are all options frequently utilized by full time employees. As social, energetic animals, how and when you give your pup alone time matters when it comes to his contentment and avoiding separation anxiety. One important factor is an appropriate amount of exercise. A tired pup will be much more willing to relax and nap when alone than a pup who has pent up energy. Doodles are moderately active dogs and need daily exercise — especially when they are young. Another way to help your dog accept being home alone is giving him something to do while he is in his crate. There are a number of long-lasting chews, puzzle toys, and snuffle mats that can occupy your doodle for at least some of the time you are away. Finally, make sure that when you are at home with your pup, you are meeting his social needs by spending quality time with him. Doodles tend to love affection as well as play time. We also recommend sleeping with your doodle in the same room as you. Dogs thrive on predictable routines, so with a little practice and training, your pup will soon adapt to being on his own for part of the day. Can Goldendoodles be Left Alone? From a house training standpoint, most survey participants reported Excellent and Very Good. Whether or not making a dog wait that long is fair or healthy, is a different subject. Goldendoodles may become bored when left alone for too long, and may try and find an outlet for their intensity. Complaints such as coming home to find garbage all over the floor, destroyed pillows and shoes, half-eaten socks, and entire missing cakes and meaty roasts are all too common. A crate-trained Miniature Goldendoodle can be left alone overnight for six to eight hours, and no more than four hours during the day. The Miniature Goldendoodles are highly sociable dogs that will prefer the company of their owners, rather than being alone. Many Miniature Goldendoodles have separation anxiety and have a hard time staying alone. Miniature Goldendoodles are a mix of a Poodle and a Golden Retriever and are an adorable breed that enjoys spending every moment with their human family. This dog requires all the affection and love that it can get. There are a lot of things that you as a pet parent can do to reduce the possibility that your Miniature Goldendoodle will suffer if left alone. This is something that can be done in a day. It takes time and training to get to the point where your Miniature Goldendoodle can be left alone. There is something that you need to keep in mind. This is for their health and well-being. Miniature Goldendoodles are highly sociable dogs that enjoy human company. They simply love spending time and getting affection. They are also high-energy dogs. This makes staying alone a little bit more complicated. If they are left alone for a long period of time, they might cause damage to your furniture. How long can Miniature Goldendoodles be left alone? An adult and well-trained Miniature Goldendoodle can be left alone for eight hours overnight, and no more than four hours during the day. Many people consider Miniature Goldendoodles the perfect apartment dog. That trait makes them a good option for an indoor pet. However, they are considered to be highly attached to people. So, how long can Miniature Goldendoodles be left alone exactly? There are some factors that determine how long you can leave your dog alone for: 1. Holding in for that long can cause damage to the bladder. A one-month to a four-month puppy can be left alone for no more than two hours. A five to eight-month puppy can be left alone for no more than four hours. Puppy older than eight months can be left alone for six to eight hours. They are so devoted and simply love spending time with their human parents. If you absolutely have to leave your Miniature Goldendoodle for six, eight, or ten hours, make sure they are entertained and have where to relieve themselves. However, leaving your Miniature Goldendoodle frequently for long periods of time might cause depression. Spend as much time as possible with your dog and leave them only when you absolutely have to. Energy levels and curiosity Miniature Goldendoodles are high-energy and curious dogs. This is a combination that no one asked for but still got it. If you have to leave your Miniature Goldendoodle alone, make sure that he has enough toys to entertain himself. By playing, they will spend that high energy. Another great tip is to try and hide some treats around the house for your Miniature Goldendoodle to find. Also, high energy and curiosity are something that can get your dog into trouble. If left alone, a Miniature Goldendoodle can become extremely curious in the house plants or chew up cables. By entertainment, I mean a lot of toys. Also, remove anything that might cause temptation and get them into trouble. When I leave my Miniature Goldendoodle to go to work, I always take him out for a long walk. After the walk, my doodle falls asleep and I go to work. When he wakes up, there are plenty of toys that he can play with. Is it okay to leave your Miniature Goldendoodle in a playpen? Leaving your Miniature Goldendoodle in a playpen is okay and totally safe. Playpens are a great idea, especially if you have to leave your Miniature Goldendoodle for more than eight hours to go to work. Leaving your Miniature Goldendoodle to roam around the house is a bad idea because a bored doodle is a chewy doodle. When I got my Miniature Goldendoodle three years ago, I was working a full-time job. So, even though it was heartbreaking for me, I had to leave my pup alone for eight hours. Instead, a friend of mine suggested getting a playpen. I went online and ordered a dog playpen from amazon. Playpens are a safe place to leave your dog unsupervised for a longer period of time. I use the playpen every time I have some work around the house, or when I go to work. However, you should start slowly, maybe leave your dog for an hour at first. Then, work your way up but make sure you do not go over eight hours. What can be done to make a Miniature Goldendoodle more comfortable with being left alone? Proper training and socialization are needed to make a Miniature Goldendoodle more accepting and comfortable with being left alone. Miniature Goldendoodles learn what is good and not good behavior through training and socialization. That gives them an idea of what is required of them in life. Once your Miniature Goldendoodle matures physically, emotionally, has been trained, and socialized, they will have a better understanding and will behave well when left alone. You should start slowly and leave them for twenty to forty-five minutes and progress slowly. The leaving alone process should be handled slowly because Miniature Goldendoodles are known to suffer from separation anxiety. As a pet parent, you should have a good leaving and returning ritual. You should never associate bad behavior with leaving. This process begins by taking your Miniature Goldendoodle for a walk, sharing a treat while cuddling on the couch, saying a quick goodbye, and leaving the house. Do not make the leaving process a drama. If you make the leaving process dramatic, start to cry and etc, your dog will take it hard as well. When you get home from work, give a treat to your Miniature Goldendoodle. Always say how good a boy or girl they are and snuggle for a little bit. Always perform the same leaving and returning ritual. When you notice that your dog is handling the leaving process without any major stress, increase the time. Some Miniature Goldendoodles will not accept this very good. You need to perform the leaving and coming back process until they are showing no signs of distress. Doggy daycare is similar to kindergarten. You can drop off your Miniature Goldendoodle before work and pick him up after you finish work. Doggy daycare can be provided by a business or a person. In any case, your dog will be taken care of. At the doggy daycare, your Miniature Goldendoodle will spend time socializing with other dogs and humans. I never took my dog to a doggy daycare because I spent a lot of time training my dog. Almost all dogs that suffer from separation anxiety will love to spend some fun time at the doggy daycare. There, they will socialize with other dogs and will look forward to it every day. The only downside of a doggy daycare can be the price. These services are known to be pricey, so always do your research and ask for prices before you sign up.

But at 10 weeks old a good routine and schedule is really going to help you crack the sleep and nap time routine. A feeding , playing, and, toilet training schedule will also help you get into the groove of what your puppy needs, at what time and will generally save you a lot of stress. Lack of sleep means overtiredness and angsty pups, who are more likely to be bitey and generally just a bit manic. The fancy trick training can come later! Get yourself and your week-old puppy into a routine Puppies thrive on routines. Knowing what comes next and life being dependable helps build confidence in your puppy. For a week-old puppy schedule, there will generally be a cycle of sleep, wake up and toilet, eat, toilet, play, toilet, sleep, toilet, bit more toilet. .Your week-old puppy will need to go to the toilet frequently so implementing a toilet training schedule of when to take them out and setting reminders in your phone will help you not forget. Toilet training takes time, and puppies learn through repetition that going to the toilet in the right place will mean rewards, but there can be a few accidents before you get to that point. Create a socialization schedule At 10 weeks old, your pup will be in their socialization window. Download Zigzag! Have lots of chew toys available for your puppy Teething means sore gums and also a desire to chew chew chew. If you have plenty of toys around for your puppy to chew on, it will save your skirting boards. You can do this by deciding the rules in your house, writing it out and popping it on the fridge. Finding the right one can be tricky, ideally, you want one that will take you at weeks. Choose a member from one of the organizations in the UK Dog Charter so you can be sure they use positive reinforcement based methods. They are basically like a toddler, and have little control of their emotions at this age, they get tired very quickly and will be dribbling a lot. Puppies lose their baby teeth because the adult ones are pushing through, this can cause a lot of pain, and an increase in saliva. Playfulness Puppies practise hunting behavior through playing, and will enjoy you being their play partner as they chase and pounce on toys. Play is great for building a relationship and life long bond with your pup, try some of our training games to sneak in some training at the same time. They need time and a bit of help to calm down at this age. A week-old puppy needs a sleep schedule…and plenty of it! They are growing at a rate of knots, emotionally, mentally and physically and they need those down time hours in the daytime to recharge, reset and rest. What exercise will my week-old puppy need? Mental exercise via training and enrichment is also a great bet at this age to keep them stimulated and relieve boredom. What should I be feeding my week-old puppy? Your week-old puppy may still be on 4 meals a day — this is fine! Some people may have already dropped to 3 meals, but for many week-old pups 4 meals help to keep them full and deliver enough food throughout the day. Puppies have a fast growth rate so getting the right ratios of fats, proteins, carbs and essential minerals will be important for their development. Labrador puppies will learn quickly about acceptable and unacceptable behavior those first few weeks, if you, the owner, are willing to set and enforce boundaries. Here is the training you should be working on with your week-old Labrador puppy. About this series of posts This is post three of a step-by-step training and socialization program for Labrador puppies. If you read our first post , you know that this series follows our training of Bubba, a female chocolate lab puppy. Bubba is already sold as one of our Custom Trained Retrievers, so it is our responsibility to raise and train her until she has progressed to the level of training the owner has requested. In this case, Bubba will be with us for almost a year and a half. Training and socialization for week-old Labrador puppy — week three home Your week-old puppy has been with your family for approximately 3 weeks now. This week you should start noticing some bigger changes with your puppy. Here are some of the changes I notice with Bubba. First, she is growing fast! Bubba is almost ready for a new collar already. I have loosened her current collar twice, and there is no more room to expand it. She is also learning a lot. Bubba is also becoming more personable. She likes and has more interest in people now and wants to be petted and scratched more often. Training equipment for Lab puppy We added a couple new training tools this week. But a thicker check cord will also work. We use this check cord for longer outside marks and assistant-marks which I will discuss more in a bit. Puppy sized canvas or light-weight plastic bumpers In week two, we introduced formal retrieving in a hallway in the house. In week three, we move outside with retrieving and introduce assistant throws, so it is helpful to have a few more bumpers. Puppy training that will continue Much of the training I have been working on for the past two weeks with Bubba will continue into this week and beyond. Dog training is not something that has a definitive end-date. For instance, you teach your puppy to SIT and then you must work and practice that command daily or weekly, often for months before the response to the command is solid. But even once the response is solid, you cannot completely stop training. If you stop training, even an older dog, the dog can lose the previous training. So, realize that you are never done working with your dog, especially on obedience training. Some areas that we will continue training Bubba on are: Crate training Bubba is doing great at crate training. She rarely makes any noise while in her crate and settles down quickly after being put into her crate. In the upcoming weeks, we will work towards getting Bubba to enter her crate on command. Looking for more information on crate training? Housebreaking Housebreaking Bubba is going well. We have caught her in a few accidents, but she already seems to understand that she is not supposed to go potty inside. This does not mean that she is done housebreaking. We still expect accidents and will for a few months, so we watch her carefully while she is running around in the house. We also praise her for behaviors like going to the door and tapping the door or whining at the door. These behaviors are rewarded with us taking her outside to go potty. When she goes potty outside, we praise her and then take her right back in. We want her to start understanding that these cue behaviors will get her out to go potty and that is all. Looking for more information on housebreaking? But we will also add a few new ones. We will use this while teaching our puppy the SIT command. It also will be used going forward, anytime we are done working on structured obedience work. We will release the dog from formal work with the OKAY command. But we also use it to mean go to a certain place, such as on a mat or stand. Or, when we want her to go into her crate or kennel. This is an associative command, meaning the puppy will learn the command through our repetition of the word as we tie it to a behavior. But over time, she will make the association and will perform it on her own. This is very important especially if you ever plan on doing more advanced training with your retriever. You will use whatever your dogs name is. A few commands that we will continue to work on this week We will continue to work on obedience commands this week and in the weeks to come. Each week we will expect a little more and better compliance and performance to the command. She is sitting when I put the leash and chain collar on her and when I am taking it off. This week we also added SIT before eating. We only make her SIT for a few seconds; we are working on control. She does not SIT on her own yet, but she will be doing that within a week or so I would guess. Right now, I grab her collar and say SIT. In week three, I have a slightly higher expectation. On walks, I make her walk right beside me for a minute or two using the HEEL command before releasing her and letting her run back and forth a bit. This tells me that she understands the command. Then release her. If every time your puppy comes to you, you put her away or take something away from her, soon your puppy will not want to come to you. You must work hard to make coming to you a good experience for your puppy. So, call her, praise her when she comes and release. Remember: Never use a HERE command if you are not in the position of being able to enforce the command. Make every effort to socialize your puppy You should continue to take steps to socialize your week-old puppy. Anything you can think of. The more things and situations you expose your puppy to, the better your puppy will be equipped to adjust and learn in the future. Learn more about socialization. Hand throws with a puppy bumper you are throwing out a bumper done outside will carry a lot more distraction than retrieves in a hallway. Just pick up the bumper and try again tomorrow. When retrieving outside, make sure you have a long foot rope attached to your puppy. Never try to do retrieves outside without a rope. You will have problems and encourage bad behaviors. You must have a way to get the puppy to come back to you, otherwise you should not be doing retrieves outside. Once your puppy is doing well retrieving outside, you are ready to introduce assistant marks. Introduction to assistant marks The most important thing we worked on with Bubba this week is assistant marks. Assistant marks are retrieves where someone else is throwing the bumper, not you. This teaches your puppy to watch out in the field for a mark. It is very rare that a duck will come from behind you, fly over your head and you shoot it. The ducks and pheasants will be falling in front of you, so the dog must learn to look out and watch for the mark. We start assistant marks on very short grass with white plugs so that the puppy can clearly see the item on the ground. We hold the puppy in a SIT position facing a thrower who is about 20 feet from you. When your puppy picks up the bumper, immediately start calling her back to you. Remember, you should have the foot check cord on her so you can pull the puppy in if needed. Then, take the bumper from her, throw it behind you, make your puppy sit facing the thrower again and repeat. Only do retrieves and then call it a day. Soon your puppy will learn this game and love it. They will start facing the thrower on their own and sitting and waiting for a mark. Final thoughts on training for your week-old Labrador puppy week-old puppies are so eager to learn, so be sure and take advantage of this enthusiasm to teach new concepts and enforce previous ones. Continue to teach your puppy to handle more and more pressure and correction while maintaining a good attitude. Lastly, assistant marks are a big deal. Once a dog learns this part of the game, you can work to increase the distance and complexity of the marks. But those first weeks of puppy development are very similar whatever the breed, and these landmarks are good general rules for any dog. Puppy development week by week, changes quickly. Newborn Puppies Newborn puppies are born at the end of nine weeks of pregnancy, with their eyes and ears tightly closed. They already have a fur coat but they cannot yet control their own body temperature. They are dependent on their mother or another heat source to keep them warm. Newborn puppies may cry if cold. But they do not have the strength to cry for long. Newborn Labrador puppies snuggle together to keep warm when their mother is away How Helpless are Newborn Pups? Although they rely on mom for a lot at this stage, newborn puppies are not completely helpless. They can use their front feet to drag themselves towards a heat source or their milk supply. This means their mom, not milk alternatives like cow or goat milk. Newborn pups have no teeth yet. But they can move their heads about to search for a nipple, and they can latch on and suck strongly. Their mother leaves them only to eat, drink and for bathroom purposes. While she is away, the puppies will crawl together to preserve their body heat, as you can see in the photo above. They may also crawl under a heat lamp source to keep warm. In every other respect newborn puppies are completely dependent on the care of their mother. Newborn pups have little control over the rear end of their bodies. The mother dog washes them and licks their bottoms to encourage elimination, licking up and swallowing anything they produce to keep her babies and their nest scrupulously clean. In fact, he may even double his birth weight! One week later and the puppies have doubled their birth weight. Changes are taking place under his eyelids to prepare them for opening. Mealtimes are a messy process, so feeding puppies out in the yard can be a good idea. Breeder Involvement Some mother dogs will lose interest in cleaning up after their pups at this point or soon afterwards. And many puppies will be wormed again this week. Vocalizations are becoming stronger at this puppy development stage. The litter will greet their mother noisily when she returns to them, and try hard to follow her out of the whelping box whenever she leaves. The puppies themselves are now eating solid food several times a day and gradually being weaned of their dependency on her milk. Puppies will still suckle ravenously when their mother returns and she will now often feed them standing up and only for a short time. She will also be teaching the puppies not to bite too hard. So, they should be increasingly spending time with humans and learning to be familiar with the sounds and sights of a human family environment. Puppies being raised in kennels must be brought into a home environment regularly from now on to ensure they develop into confident, friendly dogs. Six weeks old and full of mischief Puppies Still Have a Lot to Learn at 6 Weeks In some countries, puppies are taken to their new homes at this age. But this is not a good idea, and can result in a puppy that has poor bite inhibition and is challenging to manage. The puppies are learning not to bite too hard from the reactions of their mother and siblings. Growth is not quite so fast now. But the puppies will still grow strongly for the next few months. Many puppies will be wormed again this week. All that remains is for plenty of great socialization experiences to be packed into this week, with final checks on health. Many breeders will arrange for each seven week old puppy to have a vet check this week. And though some vets advise against it, some puppies are also given their first vaccinations before they leave for their new homes. Some breeders will now have the puppies trained to pee and poop on puppy pads or newspaper. And some will have been whistling to the puppies at meal times to get them used to coming to a human signal. Potty training is now underway and puppy socialization plans are being made. At this point, many of you will be thinking about training your puppy too. The next four weeks are vital in puppy development stages. Your main job is socializing your puppy. This part of his education can begin once his vaccination cover is complete. He should be fully immunised at around this point. But check with your vet for confirmation of the actual date. Three months also marks the point at which many puppies will drop down from four daily meals, to three. This can cause problems for some puppies because the portions are larger If your puppy gets an upset tummy when you make this change, just go back up to four meals again for a few days, and give smaller portions for a few days when you try again. Brandy and Piper were together nearly 10 years. When Piper passed away in mid-November, she was believed to be 19 years old. Although she lived a charmed life as a pampered pet after her rescue, she also became an ambassador for pet rescue, adoption, senior pets and rescuing puppy mill dogs. What is a puppy mill? A puppy mill is a dog breeding facility where dogs live in small cages and female dogs are bred as frequently as possible. Dog mills in the U. Puppy mill puppies are also sold on websites and through classified ads. Many people unknowingly buy puppies who have genetic disorders or who may be sick because of poor conditions in puppy mills. Puppy mills are operated by people who want to make money, and they see mass-producing animals as a way to do it. Animal welfare laws tend to be outdated and poorly enforced, but the good news is that there are things we all can do to help in the fight against puppy mills: Don't buy anything from a pet store that sells live animals. Pet stores are one of the major reasons puppy mills continue to exist. They provide a marketing mechanism for puppy mills, and if these stores felt a backlash and stopped selling animals, it would help force some puppy mills to shut down. If you ever walk into a pet store that sells animals, notify the manager or owner that you do not approve of this practice and you will not do business with them as long as it continues. The more people who stop purchasing animals, the fewer puppy mills will exist. There are good people out there who breed animals for the love of the breed. If you ask the right questions, it's easy to spot a good breeder. If they are only interested in your ability to pay, rather than your ability to provide a good home, do not buy an animal from them. After a volunteer for The Utah Animal Advocacy Foundation expressed concern about an unethical breeding situation in Nevada, the UAAF coordinated with volunteers as well as the breeders to find a resolution that could bring the pugs to safety. The pugs were brought to Utah, where they were placed in foster homes to await adoption. Maryjo Korb from UAAF said the dogs were kept in a dirt enclosure with chain link fences, and several had lice. After the rescue, a few puppies were born but died shortly after from genetic problems caused by inbreeding. Of the six puppies with parvovirus, only one survived. Additionally, prospective dog buyers can look for puppies registered through the American Kennel Club, ask for medical backgrounds and visit the breeders to make sure the dogs are being treated well, Hamilton said.
