Temperament The American Bulldog is an agile, confident and loyal protector for his human family, as well as of personal property. He is a gentle, affectionate and loving companion, albeit fearless and ready to strike should any intruder cross his path. An energetic, active working dog, the American Bulldog exudes a dominant, powerful and athletic appearance, with strong muscles and substantial boning. He gets along well with young children, as well as dogs and other pets so long as he was raised with them from the start. The American Bulldog does not do well when left alone for prolonged periods of time. With proper socialization, training and regular exercise, the American Bulldog is a true companion and excellent watchdog. Upkeep Because of his working past, the American Bulldog is quite familiar with being outdoors, but like most dogs, he thrives on living indoors with his owner. As such, he should be frequently exercised with plenty of engaging activity to burn off energy and combat boredom, avoiding consequential destructive behavior. Otherwise, the American Bulldog is a relatively low-maintenance breed, requiring not much else than mopping up his regular drool and slobber and minimal grooming for his short, fine coat. Known for his strength, courage and ease around livestock, the breed began being used for bull baiting before it was outlawed in England. Consequently following the ban, the breed was replaced with the less athletic, shorter and stockier English Bulldog. Meanwhile, the original bulldog type was preserved by working class immigrants, who brought them on their journey to America to use as all-around working dogs on farms and ranches in the South. Johnson worked to revive the breed alongside Alan Scott and other breeders. Today, the modern American Bulldog as we know it remains a well-rounded working dog, courageous guard dog and faithful family companion. Related Content. Q: My older Labradoodle has started barking more often without any apparent reason. Could this be senility, and how can I manage it? A: Yes, older dogs, including Labradoodles, can exhibit increased barking due to cognitive decline or senility, known as Canine Cognitive Dysfunction CCD. This is somewhat akin to dementia in humans. Create a Routine: Dogs with CCD benefit from a structured routine, as predictability can help reduce anxiety and confusion. Provide Mental Stimulation: Engage your Labradoodle in gentle but mentally stimulating activities. Puzzle toys or simple training exercises can help. Medication: In some cases, veterinarians might prescribe medication to manage symptoms of CCD. Comfortable Environment: Ensure your dog has a comfortable resting place, and consider using calming products, like pheromone diffusers or calming wraps, to help reduce anxiety. Patience: Understand that your dog is not barking on purpose or to be defiant. Be patient, gentle, and consult with professionals for guidance. Labradoodles are bright, so you can incorporate training to address their behavior. Today, the Labradoodle doodle breed has made its mark with its adorable looks and reliable alertness. Used as companion animals and the occasional therapy dog — the Labradoodle temperament is famous. Some Labradoodles require higher maintenance and are more prone to shedding. It all hangs on which side of the parent it is leaning toward. But overall, a Labradoodle is a kind and enthusiastic dog that can make your day better. They need a lot of physical and mental stimulation, so this dog is best for people who have enough space where they can freely run around. Aside from always being enthusiastic, Labradoodles also love jumping around. So you need to be extra watchful if your kids and Labradoodle are playing in the same area. Do Labradoodles Bark at All? That doesn't mean this friendly breed is without a bark. Labradoodles carry traits from the Labrador retriever and poodle and, when provoked, have a loud, low-pitch bark that signals everything from boredom to anxiety. Development and Barking A Labradoodle generally will not bark before he's 3 weeks old. From 3 to 6 weeks, he'll attempt to howl or bark while wrestling and playing with siblings. The puppy also gets growled or barked at by his mother, who is disciplining and showing her pup where he stands in the pack. From around 6 to 14 months, the Labradoodle might bark at strangers because he is fearful of new situations and people. It isn't until adulthood, from about 1 to 4 years old, that the Labradoodle is assertive and confident. Visitors at the door or a stranger approaching during a walk can lead to barking simply because the Labradoodle thinks he should defend his territory. Excessive Barking A Labradoodle who barks for long periods of time at other dogs and neighborhood noises, or who is not easily consoled after a visitor arrives, needs intervention. Because the Labradoodle has a lot of energy, he's likely to bark when he feels anxious, stressed or stimulated by something he should not be simply because he's bored. Training and Barking A Labradoodle has acute intelligence and, therefore, needs to keep learning what he's been taught. Reinforcing the rules on barking is necessary every time a Labradoodle exhibits excessive barking. Merritt advises owners play off a 'Doodle's need to feel useful. She also recommends directing the dog to a mat and telling him to stay put. This teaches him that the bark is important, but that the owner is in control. Socializing and Communicating A Labradoodle relies on other dogs and people to fulfill his social needs. His constant need for emotional and physical stimulation is filled through playing with other dogs and obeying his owner. This stimulation can be in the form of long walks, visits to the dog park and doggie play dates. When he does not get this, he may begin barking for attention. A Labradoodle may also bark to signal danger to the owner or because he wants the owner to know something, like needing to be let outside to urinate. More Articles. Moderate Barkers Poodles and Labradors are moderate barkers. The mix of a Labrador and a Standard Poodle allows for two parents that are both moderate barkers. Because both parents share similar barking traits, you can expect the Labradoodle to have a similar inclination. These dogs will bark at times when they feel it is essential to vocalize their concerns or excitement. But, they are unlikely to bark without due cause. For example, other dogs will do so for no other reason than to get attention. Barking Triggers Typically, a Labradoodle will bark when there is a particular trigger to contend with. Labradoodles may bark at people that they meet while they are on walks. They may see nothing wrong with this as they are merely greeting someone they know or warning a stranger. They may exhibit similar reactions when it comes to people entering the home. Strangers could be viewed as a threat to the family they are so loyal towards. Triggers that alarm or excite Labradoodles may also lead to a desire to bark. This could be the unexpected presence of another animal, a sound that alarms them, or something like a storm or a fireworks display. Treating the anxiety and soothing animals in a storm, perhaps with compression vests or other training exercises, can help. Aggressive Barking This is not the same as aggressive barking. A big concern for any new dog owner is that their animal will turn out to be aggressive barkers. This means barking at other people or animals in a manner that showcases distrust and a willingness to defend their family. Some dogs that bark aggressively can cause significant distress when not under control, and there is the risk of violence and snapping or biting with some breeds. While you will find that some animals are more vocal when they greet other people, there is rarely any aggressive intention behind that vocalization. For example, a new Labradoodle puppy may decide to bark at someone that enters their home as a way of saying hello or showing excitement. They may want to play. If a dog truly feels as though they or their family is under threat, they could begin to bark and act more aggressively as a defense mechanism. This is rare. The situation triggering this fear response should either be a one-off where the reaction is justified or one where you can quickly reassure the animal before they feel the need to become aggressive. Barking Due To Boredom A big issue to be aware of here is barking due to boredom. Labradors can have big problems with separation anxiety and a desire to be with their family at all times. In turn, Labradoodles may end up with similar traits where they hate to be at home alone for long. This is a problem for anyone that has a Labradoodle yet works away from home for long hours at a time. While some will exhibit this frustration via destructive behavior or chewing, others will moan and bark. This is partly a way to express themselves and somewhat a way to call their owners back. There are a couple of problems here. The first is that you have a dog in distress that needs some support to reduce its boredom and desire to bark. So, you need to find a way to minimize barking if you need to leave your Labradoodle at home. What About Night Barking? Night barking is a trait that is a big problem with a lot of puppies and certain breeds that need to bark to get their way. These dogs should stay pretty quiet at night. This is less likely with dogs that are yet to overcome any separation anxiety issues. However, there will be times when Labradoodles do bark during the night. It is important to note these occasions and check on your dog, especially when their barking is otherwise under control. Some Labradoodles may bark because they have seen something alarming, and they want to warn you. Others may do so to get your attention because they are in some pain. Repeated night barking out of the blue could mean that they have an illness and require a vet visit. The intelligence of their Poodle parent will help too. Poodles are brilliant dogs that can pick up on required behavior traits very quickly. When you combine this with that eagerness of the Labrador, you should find that your puppy is easy to train. The sooner your Labradoodle understands what is required of them, the easier it is to stop them from picking up bad habits. When it comes to barking, this also means correcting dogs when they bark at other people too much. Correct them with a firm tone when they bark at visitors and reward them with praise when they stop. When they stop, bring them out and play with them for staying quiet. Train them to deal with separation anxiety, and the rest should follow. Barking through boredom or rare instances of night barking are often related to separation anxiety. So, the sooner you can deal with this issue, the sooner you should be able to control Labradoodle barking. One of the best options is to make time in your day to come and see your dog and play with them. Or ask for help from a pet-sitter or relative. The same is true at night. A Labradoodle with their favorite toys and blanket by their bed should be more content. The sooner you provide obedience training and address separation anxiety with these animals, the easier it is to control unwanted barking tendencies. Some will bark when they meet new people, out of fear or out of boredom. But, these issues are easy to maintain with the right training and attitude. More info on Labradoodles. Do Labradoodles Bark A Lot? Labradoodles are communicative and very vocal dogs. So, do Labradoodles bark a lot? However, this does not mean that they bark a lot. They are considered moderate barkers and fall under the mild-barkers category. Like most other breeds, your Labradoodle will bark for a reason. The Labradoodle has become a popular breed and a favorite for most first-time dog owners. The breed is a cross between a Poodle and a Labrador. Both parents combine to give a dog breed that is smart, loyal, playful, and friendly. If you are looking for an ideal addition to your family, look no further. However, it is important to understand more about your Labradoodle before deciding to bring it home. Since every dog is unique, understanding the habits, personality, and behavior both bad and good is important. Labradoodles are kind, gentle, and among the highly socialized pets. Their barking will not be an issue if they get proper socialization and training. Keep reading to learn more. Therefore, Labradoodles can not be an exception. Barking is part of being a dog and is one way of telling their owners something. A dog that does not bark should be more concern than one that barks. Since Labradoodles are considered mild-bakers, it is important to know the reason behind their barking. Here are the common causes of Labradoodle barking. Attention Like humans or other creatures, dogs love attention and will do something if they feel they are being ignored or neglected. If you do not spend much time with your furry friend, you will notice that the pet will start developing some behaviors that are aimed at getting your attention. Some Labradoodles will become annoyingly playful and even try stealing your items. They might even try to chew on some furniture just to get your attention. These behavioral shifts can also be accompanied by barking, especially if you are around. When your Labradoodle barks, your first reaction will be to stop and find out what is bothering them. Boredom Boredom is one of the major causes of barking in Labradoodles. These affectionate dogs enjoy being in the company of their keepers or close to their families. Your furry friend can develop separation anxiety if left alone at home. This is common to individuals who have Labradoodles but work away from home. Labradoodles are social creatures that love human interaction and company. This means they can become bored quickly if they are not provided with adequate physical and mental stimulation. While some dogs will exhibit this frustration through chewing and other destructive behaviors, others will bark and moan. Barking is a way of expressing themselves and calling their handlers back. This condition can be a bit challenging. First, you will need to help and support your distressed dog to reduce boredom and desire to bark. Therefore, you will need to train your furry friend and find a way to minimize barking if you are going to leave it alone at home. Fear Labradoodles are usually sensitive to flashes and loud noises. This may include loud music from the neighborhood, thunderstorms, or fireworks. Therefore, you should not be surprised if your furry friend starts aggressive barking during stormy weather or during celebrations. Fortunately, barking because of such fears will stop once the fireworks parties have ended or the storm has passed, and peace is restored. Pain Or Medical Condition If your Labradoodle is sick or in pain, it might yap, whine, or bark in response to the pain stimulus. This can be common to Labradoodles that suffer from arthritis, and sudden movements cause shooting pains through their joints. Older Labradoodles suffering from age-related degeneration may also turn into night barkers. Like elderly humans, older Labradoodles may get confused with their surroundings when everything is dark. Failing eyesight also means a red alert. Stranger Danger If your Labradoodle takes after its Labrador retriever parents, it will likely be wary and aloof when meeting strangers in the streets. Like most other dog breeds, your Labradoodle will bark if it feels a new person may be a threat to your or to the family. The barking is meant to warn the stranger to back off. Labradoodles have been known to bark at strangers in the streets whenever they feel their owner is in danger. They can also bark at your guests if they do not know them well. It is good to socialize your furry friend with other members of the family or even close friends. Excitement Your furry friend can also bark out of joy. This will occur when they get excited, especially when they have not seen their owners for a while. They will also get excited if there is a new toy or when a friend comes over. You do not have to worry if your furry friend barks because of joy. The barking will stop once your friend calms down. Training Your Dog To Stop Barking While barking is normal, and all dogs are meant to bark, excessive barking can be a disturbance in the neighborhood. Fortunately, there are several ways you can try to stop your Labradoodle from barking or control barking. Here are some of them. Early Socialization One of the best ways to stop your furry friend from barking is through early socialization. Socializing your puppy around different places, people, sounds, and other things at an early age will make him comfortable when it comes across those things in the future. It will do away with barking out of anxiety or fear. Labradoodles are known to be friendly and playful dogs. They will enjoy playing with kids and other pets. Therefore, if you have kids around, you can allow them to play freely with your furry friend. You can also socialize with other people, places, and sounds by taking them for a walk in the streets. Ignore the Barking In some cases, your Labradoodle could be barking to get attention regardless of the type of bark. These dogs are known to crave human attention and companionship. The best you can do in such cases is to ignore their barking. If your furry friend fails to get the attention he wants, he will most likely stop barking. It can even be better if your reward their silence. When they stop barking, you can reward them with a treat, give them a hug, or praise. You should not give your Labradoodle a treat while he is still backing. That way, he will think you are rewarding the behavior and will get used to it. Eliminate or Get Them Used to Triggers Labradoodles will just bark because of anything strange or any triggers within their territory. If a certain situation is causing your furry friend to bark a lot, and you can eliminate it, be sure to do away with it as soon as possible. For instance, if your Labradoodle is barking a lot when in the company of another pet, you can try to separate them. If you cannot eliminate the trigger, you can try to get your dog used to it. For instance, if your dog is barking when near a cat, you can socialize the two and get them used to one another. This can be more successful if it is started at an early age. Start Training Them Early Labradoodles are considered highly intelligent dogs. Because of their intelligence, they are easy to train and will catch on eventually if you are persistent with the training. The earlier you start the training, the easier it will be. It is easier to teach a puppy not to bark excessively than to teach a mature dog that has been barking for a long time. However, it is still possible to train an older Labradoodle, although it can be a bit challenging and time-consuming. While excessive barking is annoying, it can sometimes be an indicator that your furry friend has a certain health issue. If you think your dog is barking a lot because of a medical condition, you should see your vet as soon as possible. If he is in discomfort or pain, there is no other way he can communicate with you. Older dogs may suffer from various health issues and will bark when the pain becomes severe. Conclusion All dogs are meant to bark, and Labradoodles are not an exception. However, they are considered moderate barkers and will not bark a lot. As annoying as barking may be to your family and neighbors, your Labradoodle is trying to communicate. It is important to find out what is causing your Labradoodle to bark. Sharing is caring! Their high intelligence allows them to be trained easily, including training them not to bark. But there are specific things that will cause your Labradoodle to bark. Feeling Protective or Scared Being a mixture between the people-pleasing Labrador Retriever and the uber-affectionate Poodle, Labradoodles are not really known for being protective or aggressive. If a Labradoodle feels threatened, they are most likely to react by barking. Unfamiliar Places and Faces Labradoodles are friendly and love everyone and anything. They are the socialites of the Doodle world. They might be excitable and bark a lot at first, but they will calm down once they get used to their new friend. Ensure you introduce your guests to your pet properly and let them get to know your guests to minimize barking. I have one neighbor my dog adores. At first, every time she came around, you could hear my dog barking from a mile away out of pure excitement. So, thunderstorms are a major trigger for their barking. Although raising awareness about how fireworks affect animals, there are still so many used throughout the year that traumatizes dogs, causing them to hide away, run away, or bark a lot. Labradoodles are prone to separation anxiety. Because of such an incredible mix of two highly intelligent breeds, they need sufficient mental stimulation or get bored and bark. But as soon as it becomes constant or uncontrollable, you must do everything possible to get them to behave. Here are things you can do to prevent your Labradoodle from barking too much. Train Your Labradoodle The best way to prevent your Labradoodle from barking too much is by having them trained as soon as they are old enough. You can start training your Labradoodle from eight weeks old. The earlier you start this, the better, but this training method can be used at any age with these three easy steps. So instead of getting angry and shouting at them to stop, ignore them. Doing this will teach them that barking is not the way to get what they want. Step Two: Reward The Good Habit Once your Labradoodle has stopped barking, give them a treat or a cuddle to encourage your desired behavior. Positive reinforcement will get you a lot further than shouting. Step Three: Repeat To see results with your training, you need to be consistent. Your Labradoodle will learn a habit over time. The barking episodes will slowly decrease once they pick up on the pattern: barking gets you nothing, and behaving gets you treats. Provide Enough Exercise Be sure to give your Labradoodle enough exercise. Lack of exercise is one of the biggest reasons a dog will bark. You should count on providing your adult Labradoodle with around minutes of exercise throughout the day. While puppies and senior dogs will need less but still enough to tire them out. Early Socialization Labradoodle Puppy One thing you need to know about Labradoodles is they love to socialize. A good way to prevent them from barking during thunderstorms and other loud noises is to play similar sounds around them gradually. They may also have a different bark for every situation. The first step towards stopping unwanted barking is to determine the cause. Fear or alarm — Puppies and dogs will often bark if they see an object or hear a noise that scares them or catches their attention in some way. A fear-induced bark can happen at home or away from home. Sounds that will often bring about this type of bark are sirens, thunderstorms, fireworks or similar loud noises. Protective or territorial — Dogs consider certain areas as their home or their territory even at a young age. When a person of an animal invades their territory, they may view it as a threat and, their first instinct is to bark. The closer the threat comes, the louder the dog may bark. Sometimes, the owner can be trying with every imaginable step to stop the barking, but it continues. There are several methods you can use to train your dog to stop barking. You can try one of two methods or a combination of both. Early Socialization: Socializing your Labradoodle puppy around as many people, places and things as possible at a very young age will make him more comfortable when he does see those things in the future. This will eliminate barking out of fear or anxiety or because he feels someone is invading his territory. Ignore the Barking — Reward the silence Try ignoring the barking. In most cases, the dog is barking to get attention regardless of the type of bark. The second the dog stops barking, give him praise and a treat. At the same time, do not punish the dog for barking or put him in his crate. In a controlled situation you can try and get him used to being around cats, especially early on if this will happen frequently. Teach her what will make you happy: A good way to teach your Labradoodle puppy to not bark excessively is to correct the problem at the first unnecessary bark. The second the dog stops barking, praise him and give him a treat. The earlier the training begins, the easier and quicker it will be. As annoying as excessive barking can be, sometimes it can be caused by a health issue. If he is in pain or discomfort, he really has no other way to communicate with you. Excessive barking can be caused by something as simple not so simple to your pup like a bee sting or toothache to something as complicated as a brain disease. If the dog has a health issue that causes ongoing pain, this could very easily make the dog bark. Older dogs often suffer from chronic pain and may bark when the pain becomes serious. Walking your dog on hot pavement in the summer can cause the feet to become very sore, which could also cause barking. Related Questions How do you teach your dog to bark on command? The Seniority Classification Period: 12 to 16 Weeks The moment the first fear period ends, the seniority classification period launches. This is when your Labradoodle puppy will really begin soaking in the deeper dynamics of family life and their place in it. You can expect more barking as your pup starts to test the limits of their authority and, likely, your patience. As an extra incentive to be positive and very consistent in your training during this period. How well you navigate these five weeks will impact how much barking your Labradoodle does for the rest of your life together. Barking in Adult Labradoodles Puppy barking can be annoying at times, but it can also be very cute. A fully grown adult Labradoodle barking their head off is not going to be so cute. TYour job will be to continue with consistent, positive training to teach your dog to temper their barking. How to Identify Problem Barking While your Labradoodle will go through some life stages where barking can become temporarily problematic. There is a big difference between developmental barking and problem barking. How can you determine if your Labradoodle barking is becoming a problem? See if you can identify with any of the following examples of problem barking: Barking continues despite all of your best efforts to stop it Barking only happens when you are leaving or returning Aggressive barking that only happens in response to certain triggers Barking is accompanied by snapping, growling, or lunging Many dogs can be trained out of barking, which we will look at in closer detail in a moment. Are Labradoodles Good Watch Dogs? Barking alone is not a determinant of watchdog ability. All dogs bark to some extent and many breeds still make very poor watchdogs. The Labradoodle is a newer breed developed by crossing a Labrador Retriever and a standard Poodle. This mix breed can inherit any blend of traits from its two parent breeds. The universally beloved and famously friendly Labrador Retriever does not make a good watch dog. Unless you think licking the burglar all over while wriggling with happy excitement is a mark of a good guard dog! The standard Poodle, however, typically makes an excellent watchdog. But if your Labradoodle inherits their personality from the Labrador Retriever parent dog, you will definitely need a Plan B for your home security needs. Labradoodles are generally eager to please and very food motivated. So, they will respond well to positive reward training. Try to reward your Labradoodle when he or she is quiet and calm — particularly in response to something that would often trigger barking! And, make sure they are getting enough mental and physical stimulation. Bored Labradoodles may bark for attention. And, rewarding barking with attention or shouting will most often just encourage your dog to bark more. Puppy or adult dog socialization and training classes can also help both you and your dog nip problem barking in the bud. Working with an experienced K9 trainer is another great way to help your Labradoodle learn other ways to effectively communicate with you. Do Labradoodles Bark a Lot? It can be almost impossible to predict exactly how much a Labradoodle will bark! Some will be a lot more vocal than others. A lot of it will depend on how they are raised, and the traits they inherit from their parent breeds. Are you coping with a Labradoodle that barks too much? Let us know in the comments! They may bark constantly at people or animals outside, or when you have visitors. If your dog is showing signs of excessive barking, you should intervene as soon as possible. Labradoodle Puppy Barking Puppies grow up faster than you think. By far the most frequent type of barking from a Doodle puppy is because of separation anxiety typically most often in the first six months where they are learning substantial amounts of information about this new world of theirs. So what this shows is that while you will need to pay attention to not reward the barking, you will have to invest a lot in your relationship with your puppy, as it is the main factor in bringing up a great dog. And that usually means that it will start making some noise. Perhaps your dog will start stealing your favorite shoes. And as stated earlier, fixing the attention-demanding type of barking is a balancing act. And the single most effective way of fixing such a situation is by making sure that you have a happy and healthy dog. If your dog is bored, make sure there are plenty of different toys for it to enjoy. And make sure that you can find plenty of time for lots of playing and pampering your doodle. Eventually, as a Labradoodle is a quite intelligent breed of dog , it will often find out that barking for attention usually works! One way of fixing this is by simply walking away when the usual signs of attention-seeking barking begin. Never reward Labradoodle barking with your attention. What you should do instead, is reward the good behavior. In a study by Researchgate. As a breed, do Labradoodles bark a lot at night? But if it does occur, there can be a few things which could be the main culprit. The first thing that comes to mind is that it is some kind of illness, pain or some other condition which is usually the result of old age, something like dementia also known as can also be the cause. One of the first things you should do in that case is that you should take your dog to the vet to rule out any serious health issue. Another reason for night-time barking is that perhaps it just becomes a habit in your dog due to boredom or maybe separation anxiety. Here you can find our guide to keeping your Labradoodle perfectly fit and happy. If your dog happens to hear a raccoon of other critters at night, you can be certain that it will react to that with barking. Aggressive barking is usually also something that potential dog owners are very concerned about and worried about. But for potential Labradoodle owners, the good news here is that Labradoodles are one of the least aggressive dog breeds. But of course, no matter how calm and gentle any animals are, if it is placed in a situation where it becomes scared, it might react in a way that will feel very aggressive. And if we are talking about Labradoodle barking problems that are based on fear or aggression, there are a few steps you can take to help your Labradoodle calm down. Firstly, try to understand where the fear is coming from. If your Doodle is feeling the fear due to another dog or perhaps a stranger, the best way to get results is to simply remove your Labradoodle from the situation instead of trying to just stop the barking. If you are able to identify what triggers your dog, you can slowly reduce the levels of anxiety that your dog will feel, by gradually introducing your Doodle to those specific situations. So no matter how you feel if you ever get in such a situation, try to take a deep breath, and remember that your reactions are very likely to influence how your dog reacts. The first step to fixing any situation is to try and understand what your Labradoodle is trying to tell you. I hope this guide has given a helping hand, no matter if you are considering getting a Labradoodle, or already have one. References and Further Reading Duffy, D.

Health screenings like echocardiograms also need to be performed to ensure the pups are as healthy as possible when they join their new owners. Needless to say, these examinations also come at a considerable cost. Popularity of Frenchies The second reason that explains the high prices of Frenchies is the increasing demand for them. People simply love them for their unique personality and looks, but such popularity has its downsides as well. A high demand not only means higher prices, but it also attracts people with false intentions who will take any opportunity to get rich. More about that in the next section! Part of our mission is to fight against scammers and educate adopters about how they can recognize false intentions, so please read our article on how to avoid French Bulldog scams. Puppy farms If you think that scammers are horrible, wait until we tell you about puppy farms or puppy mills run by unethical breeders, also known as backyard breeders. They are the ones who saw the increasing demand for French Bulldogs as an opportunity to make money by breeding and selling these pups merely for the profit. For them, profit always comes first. They keep the poor babies in tiny places where they are not even able to learn how to run! In fact, unethical Frenchie breeders are the reasons why the breed gained a reputation for being unhealthy. A breeder like that is extremely selective about the breeding parents; they know the bloodlines for generations and exclude any Frenchie that shows any possibility of carrying a health issue. They always give you a Health Guarantee with their puppies and take responsibility if something goes wrong. An unethical breeder will do none of these things! So, now you see that you might save money at first by choosing a cheap French Bulldog, but later on you will leave a fortune at the vet, not to mention the stress both you and the puppy will go through! Always buy from a reputable breeder! In the previous sections, we tried to present all the dangers that you might face when adopting cheap French Bulldogs. Always ask yourself and the breeder these before reserving a Frenchie puppy! How does the breeder keep the puppies? Ask them about how and where the pups spend their days. How do they talk about the pups? If a breeder talks about their Frenchies like products, they most probably treat them and think of them as products! Are they ready to show you the pup via video call? This is a crucial question. You should always be able to see a Frenchie on a video call before reserving them. Breeding Frenchies requires special methods and practices from breeders, like artificial insemination and C-section. The steep rise of their popularity also made French Bulldog prices to increase in recent years. What is the problem with ads of surprisingly cheap Frenchies? Always be suspicious of scammers and unethical breeders. How to avoid online scams and puppy farms? You can avoid online scams and puppy farms by doing a thorough research. Life Span Did You Know? The German Shepherd is one of the most versatile, well-recognized, and popular dog breeds in the world. The modern German Shepherd is descended from a family of various German herding dogs. Breed standards were not developed until the late 19th century when Captain Max von Stephanitz, a German cavalry officer, worked with Arthur Meyer and other breeders to develop the ideal German herding dog. Stephanitz and Meyer wrote the breed standard in and the American Kennel Club recognized the German Shepherd as a member of the Herding Group in .Although they were originally bred as herding dogs, they were also bred for versatility, which made the German Shepherd an all-around working dog that could excel in a variety of applications. German Shepherds are one of the common dog breeds employed in K-9 units in both police and military applications. They also make great service dogs and, of course, are still awesome herding dogs and farm dogs! The German Shepherd is a strong-willed and highly intelligent dog. They have a playful, energetic spirit and tend to get along with children, other dogs, and other pets, which makes them a great family companion. A born protector, the German Shepherd will provide a great sense of security for their family while their loving and lively personality will make them fit right in as a companion. German Shepherds are naturally protective and can be wary of strangers at first. A well-socialized German Shepherd will bark to alert you and tends to warm up to strangers once introduced. German Shepherds are dogs that were bred to herd and work. This, plus their high energy, makes them a better fit for homes with fenced yards where they can run. They can adapt well to larger apartments as long as plenty of time is dedicated to ensuring they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and attention every day. A bored, ignored, or under-exercised German Shepherd can often become a destructive one. They also can be sensitive to their surroundings and large gatherings can be off-putting. With a longer coat, they tend to prefer cooler climates and are sensitive to heat. The German Shepherd is a generally healthy breed, but there are some potential health concerns and good breeding practices make a big difference. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a German Shepherd include hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia , and degenerative myelopathy. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking about the health and genetic history of both parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. As a barrel-chested breed, the German Shepherd is also at risk for bloat. While the German Shepherd is highly intelligent and highly trainable, they are generally not recommended for novice owners. If you are a novice dog owner, enroll in puppy training classes or enlist the help of a professional dog trainer; not just for your dog, but for yourself as well. They get bored easily and especially with repetition, so continued training with your German Shepherd throughout their life will be necessary. German Shepherds have a medium-to-long double coat. They will shed year-round and heavier as seasons change. Brushing a few times a week is usually sufficient; brushing daily is even better and your GSD will likely love you for it. Bathing is occasional on an as-needed basis. Ear checks weekly with careful cleanings as needed can help prevent ear infections. German Shepherds are high-energy working dogs. Not only do they require a lot of daily activity, but they also are a herding breed that was made to run, guard, and observe, so they need a job to do to be happy and healthy. Daily walks plus playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough for a GSD, but they will likely be up for more activity if you are. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Location Information for Lexington Customers Our home office is located in Ohio, but we understand that long-distance travel can be inconvenient. If you prefer to meet a breeder in person, they may be able to offer private visits at their home. Of course! Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. What type of Golden Retrievers are sold in Lexington? We have some good news! Ready to make your Golden Retriever dreams come true? Take a look at our convenient list of available puppies. How do I know which breeders to trust in Lexington? Our independent network of trusted breeders have already been pre-screened and verified, so that you can focus on what really matters: choosing your dream puppy. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. We are very excited! Puppies are expected at Kelston! Go to the "puppies" page for more information. Welcome, and thank you for visiting! We are located in the beautiful rural area of Lexington, Kentucky, where my dogs have lots of room to play and swim in the lake. Kelston is small hobby kennel dedicated to producing golden retrievers that are the very best in health, temperament, and structure. All of our dogs used for breeding have their hip and elbow certifications by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals OFA , eyes cleared by a board certified opthamologist, and hearts cleared by a board certified cardiologist. About Me Golden retrievers have been a part of my life since I was a little girl. They were considered the "family" dog, but I took on the responsibility of training and caring for each one. It wasn't until I was fourteen that I asked for a golden retriever of my own.He was not a show dog, however it was because of him that the next golden I purchased, Riley, was a young show prospect. Although I can't imagine a time in my life without a golden, I have only been showing and breeding for about 12 years. The Lord has blessed me immensely with a large family 10 of us total! I would never be able to do any of this without them. Why "Kelston"? Off and on for about four years, my family and I had the wonderful opportunity to live in New Zealand. My time living in that beautiful country is filled with all kinds of memories, one of which was owning my first golden. I wouldn't change any of it. The name of the tranquil road we lived on was Kelston Way which seemed very fitting for my kennel prefix. Puppy Reservation Process If you are interested in a Kelston golden, please contact Jane either by phone or e-mail. I do not breed very often, but I do keep a waiting list and I am always happy to refer to other breeders who may have puppies available. Not all training packages may be available at our Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky location, please reference our pricing page for complete information on services offered. Puppies are capable of learning basic commands. Smart Golden Retriever puppies do great with early training. Complete Golden Retriever puppy training typically takes a few months. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky offers specialized in-home training. Working with a Golden Retriever puppy and the owner directly in the home prevents puppies from being distracted and allows dog trainers to create personalized training plans for individual puppies, as well as address any unique needs or issues. Once a puppy has completed in-home training, Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky offers puppy group classes for further training. Beginning Golden Retriever training in the home also helps owners bond with their pup so when the dog trainer leaves, no progress is lost. Training can be great mental stimulation, so a great exercise for Golden Retrievers as they get older is progressing their training. Once your puppy has mastered sitting, for example, train them to maintain the position until released. Once your puppy is a bit older, explore other sports and activities. This includes developing conditioned or automatic reflexes to commands. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when the owner says "sit," the dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Our unique techniques ensure our program is a success no matter what behavior we encounter. Empowering Owners We empower owners to train so their dog knows who to obey at all times. Personalized We deal with problem behaviors on a personal basis. Environment Specific We train wherever issues tend to arise i. Supportive We support owners in the off-hours when training is "not in session". Involved We work with all members of the household. All Ages. The Dog Training Elite Difference Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky uses modern training methods focused on positive reinforcement and bonding between dog and dog owner. Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky never resorts to the use of punishment to help dogs unlearn bad behavior. The difference becomes clear when comparing a dog that is trained out of anxiety and intimidation vs a dog who truly desires to please from the inside out. The Dog Training Elite Central Kentucky training theory is mostly based around classical conditioning, also known as the Pavlovian method or respondent conditioning. In its simplest form after proper conditioning , when an owner says "sit," their dog automatically sits without thinking about it. Through a combination of commands and an electronic collar, dogs learn to follow commands at once. Other dog trainers use harsh static collars or spray collars which have been shown to be less effective. Ready to turn your Golden Retriever puppy into a loyal and loving companion? I started working with Tom about three months after adopting my very anxious rescue, Frannie, who was about 14 months old at the time. I tried other training programs, as well as just figuring things out from YouTube videos on my own but after a few months of nightmarish daily walks and hateful looks when I tried to go out with Frannie who would just bark her head off the moment we stepped outside, well, I decided it was time to get professional help. The very first one-on-one class with Tom was a complete game-changer. No more pulling after just one class with Tom! She is now also able to walk past most of the bunnies hopping around without trying to chase after them and this makes the walks so much safer not having to constantly worry about her taking off after a rabbit or squirrel and run out right in front of a car. Frannie is a smart girl but she is also very stubborn, so there have been several things she has been slow to learn to perform well and Tom is always very patient with her, and of course with me too. The next-level game-changer was when we started attending group classes. I was always envious of people whose pups just lay next to them quietly while they are able to carry a conversation with other people for an hour or two. Now I constantly get compliments on how well-behaved my dog is. She has improved so incredibly much since working with Tom and I look forward to continuing our work with him. When we had our consultation our dog Bella Cane Corso was jumping on Tom and his assistant she even got in the couch with them. NOT the behavior we wanted with guests coming over and she is over lbs. We set up training and Bella was nothing short of difficult and did not want to listen or act on any commands. After the home sessions I could see some improvement and changes in her behavior. Next we moved to the group class and I was completely nervous that she would be a class clown. The first session was difficult. She continually improved. Now she walks next to me and lets me lead, she is no longer afraid to walk on the small wall or complete the obstacle course on command. I can take her into pets stores and I have control of her. She no longer jumps on guests when they come visit she sits and allows them to greet her. She is so much more enjoyable when we are out and about. He also takes time to train the owners on the proper ways to interact with your pet in a positive way to train without negative reinforcement. I look forward to class now and Bella does too! Thank you Tom!!!! As a young puppy, she would bite and chew on my arms, nip at the back of my arms to the point I was bloody, scratched, scabbed and bruised! I had to take her to the veterinarian to get medication to calm her at night just to be able to do simple house chores. After our first at home lesson, Millie obeyed and was so good. She loved Tom and I wanted to cry. Just watching her walk in a leash, stop and sit, was amazing. Since then she has amazed me on what she can learn, she is so smart! We just finished our at home training and in just 5 weeks, Millie is no longer a devil child, but a happier well behaved, smart member of our family!! It is such a blessing to see her listen and follow commands and listen. Tom is so good with her and very patient. He is very knowledgeable and Millie just loved him, and his pocket that were he keeps the treats! Thank you Tom for giving me a well trained dog that will be happier and safer in her future. Looking forward to our group classes and see where this little girl can go and what she can learn!!! I highly recommend to get your dog trained, for your sake and theirs!! It made a world of difference in our day!! If your expectation is quality, Tom is unmatched. I came to Tom with an month dog, Woody, that had almost zero manners I say almost because I want to give myself some credit, haha. There were things I had to untrain because they contradicted what I was expecting from my dog. Hence, my quest to find help and Tom helped me understand what giving a dog a command even means. Tom was patient with Woody. More importantly, he was patient with me. I researched several other companies, but I decided to go with DTE and would recommend them for several reasons. DTE provides in-home training. This was incredibly important to me as I wanted to learn as my dog was learning. Although sending my pup away for a couple of weeks seemed enticing, having it in the home allowed me full access and reassurance of the quality of care. I was learning just as much as my dog was, and we were doing it together, which created a deeper bond. Woody does better when I give him commands, so having him home was essential to me. DTE is patient. He gave me and Woody confidence to keep working. For example, Woody had a hard time on the step ladder. It took Woody weeks to get the confidence to jump on the step ladder. Tom would guide me on specific techniques until one clicked. DTE invests in your success. Tom is polite and takes a genuine interest in meeting my training needs. Although I am swamped during the week, he ensures I am set up for success and never overloads my homework. He even checks in. He truly gets to know you and your companion. Any time I have had a question or concern, Tom has been happy to help problem solve with me. He is a clear communicator, and willing to go the extra mile. I am so excited to continue working with him in the future! He is always so optimistic with my dog and my abilities with him throughout our training. Tom and Diane are amazing at what they do and are so passionate about dog training. They have given us our life back. He was so reactive to everyone except us. We couldn't have company over. We couldn't go places for extended periods of time, and honestly we didn't know when or if we would be able to have children. I know that there are dogs that no matter how much you try, they just cant be trained. We weren't going to give up on our boy though. We could see his true self when we were at home with him and we wanted other people to see that side of him. The results speak for themselves. The most common thing we hear is "He's like a whole new dog! There aren't words to describe our appreciation we have for these guys. They're definitely getting invited to the wedding! LOL If you're looking for great training with great trainers in a great environment, this is your place!

As they get older they do calm down and become much calmer dogs, but even then they will always want to be around their favorite person — YOU. What to Expect From a Puppy Like any other puppies, Pug puppies have a lot of energy which they will put into running around and seeking the attention of their owner. Having a small attention span they will run around your house finding ways to have fun. One minute they will want to snuggle up next to you and the next they will be running around making trouble just so they can get you to chase them around. You can expect your puppy to be: playful attention seeking curious The attention seeking and curiosity is often what gets these little guys in trouble. This early in their life, they are learning about their surroundings and how to deal with this. This is the perfect time to start training your Pug puppy. The sooner you start, the quicker he will learn. The Pug You Always Wanted As your Pug grows older, his personality and behavior will start taking a more concrete shape. Like within any breed the personality of a dog will vary from one dog to another, but since this breed has been selected and bred to have certain traits you can expect your Pug to have the following traits. Docile — He will become more docile, meaning that he will be more willing to be controlled and will be willing to do what you tell him. This is a wonderful quality as it is easier to train your pug to listen to you and make yourself the household leader in his life. Clever — By being fairly smart dogs, you can expect your pug to be pretty clever. Energetic — Naturally pugs are very energetic and will run around and try to play and seek your attention. Charming -Pugs are naturally beautiful dogs. They are small with an adorable face that will make anyone want to hold and cuddle them. Of course they know this and will use every opportunity they have to charm you. Sociable — You never want your Pug to be in complete isolation. Leaving for work and such is ok, but to leave him unattended for long periods of time will put a lot of stress on him. He is a social creature that will always seek to be with someone. Protective — Pugs are known to be guard dogs on some occasions. In the past they have been used in the military as tracking dogs and guard dogs. This shows that they can be protective and you can expect your pug to be protective over what he considers his. It is a great quality as long as you know how to make sure he is protecting you and your things and not himself and his things from you. Stubborn — Having a natural stubborn personality, most pugs will do what they want to do and if they do not receive the proper training it can be hard to change their mind. With all of the traits of this breed, Pugs can be a perfect pet for someone who wants a little adorable dog full of love and excitement. However to truly have an obedient and happy dog you have to know how to properly train them, and the earlier the training starts the better. A few minutes of training a day should be enough in most cases, of course unless your dog has some real bad behavior problems. You can learn more about Pug training, care and health by reading this book about Pugs. Related Articles. Like any puppy, Pugs display playful bursts of energy before they suddenly collapse for a nap. They seem to have two speeds fast and stop! The good news is that Pug pups will not always be this hyperactive. They usually settle down after a couple of years and morph into more sedate lap dogs who love to take a lot of naps. Pugs are very happy, excitable dogs who want nothing more than to play and hang out with you. Their natural exuberance is what makes Pugs so fun to be around. Pugs slow down a bit as they grow older, but fortunately, they never lose their zeal for having fun! Most Pugs have enthusiastic personalities with sweet dispositions making them great companions. Whether they are hanging out on your lap or begging you to throw the ball for them, they demand a lot of attention! Combine this with youthful puppy energy and you have a pretty lively little dog! However, for the most part, Pugs are not high maintenance click here to read more. I actually think of Pugs as being more joyous and playful than hyper. But they are prone to some crazy antics at times and can become obsessive about their playtime. Pugs need quality playtime but they also need to be taught moderation as they mature. A good example of this is my Pug-mix dog, Georgia, who absolutely loves her balls! She gets particularly attached to tennis balls and softer rubber balls that she can hold and squish in her mouth. She could walk around all day with a ball in her mouth if I allowed it! Georgia sneaks around with her favorite Chew King ball. In addition to her Insum Tennis Balls , Georgia really loves her Chew King balls which are easy for her to catch and hold in her mouth. Getting the ball back is a major challenge which usually involves high-value special food! I mostly use the harder Snub dog balls when we go to the dog park to play fetch. These are slightly bigger, very durable, and practically indestructible. And, because they are not as fun and squishable, she will actually bring them back to me. You can see more about my recommendations for balls and other toys on my recommended products page for dog toys. I think another reason Pugs get branded as being hyper is due to their incredibly high energy and playfulness, especially as puppies. A Pug pup will race around, bouncing from one thing to the next. Then he will suddenly crash in a heap and take a nap. Pugs only seem to know two speeds— fast forward and drop dead! Pugs get these incredible bursts of energy, which may seem like hyperactivity. But it is really just the way Pugs have fun and let off pent-up steam. As puppies, Pugs are probably more prone to zoomies and excitable behavior than other breeds. This will usually go on for about two years until they finally begin to mellow. Eventually, they will be content to hang out by your side and lounge around on the sofa. Mature Pugs have a reputation for being lap dogs who love to nap, which is why Chinese royalty loved them so much! An additional reason Pugs can sometimes become a little hyper is their love to explore! And, this often involves tasting the world with their tongue. Pugs are very motivated by anything they can taste, and they love to eat. If you want a Pug to do a trick, give her a treat! My dog Georgia wakes me up every morning by licking my nose see my post. She wants me to know that it is time for her breakfast and she is quite anxious about getting it! She will do just about anything for a small bit of food or even a crumb. My kitchen floors have never been so clean! And as a puppy, your Pug will need more frequent attention and brief play times at least times a day. Ensure Your Pug Gets Adequate Sleep — Whether your Pug is a puppy or an adult, having a consistent sleeping and waking schedule is extremely helpful. Consider using a crate as a quiet den for your new puppy for the first few months. Then when your dog gets older, make sure she has a comfy bed in a quiet space. A little bit is fine. But keep in mind that Pugs are not athletes. They have short little legs and stout bodies. A fun walk to the park or around the neighborhood should suffice. A couple of additional play times during the day for an adult is good, and a puppy will need play periods in between naps. Puzzle Games — Since Pugs love to eat, dog puzzle games that involve food keep them very engaged. I have two Outward Hound interactive food puzzles for my dogs and they love them. It keeps them engaged for at least minutes. These puzzles are fun and work their minds, which will help with pent-up energy. Sometimes simple Kong toys stuffed with kibble, peanut butter, or Cheese Whiz work pretty well for a quick distraction. Pugs Do Not Like to Be Alone — Pugs were bred to be companion dogs and they love nothing more than to be right by our side. Therefore, leaving a Pug alone for several hours each day could lead to separation anxiety click this link to see my post. Pugs do best in a family in which someone will be home at least for part of the day. If this is not possible, have a friend or neighbor spend some time with your pooch each day. If you want a really independent dog, a Pug may not be the best choice for you. But if you work at home, a Pug could be ideal. Training — Obedience training is always helpful, but especially with a Pug who has a tendency to be a bit stubborn and even mischievous at times. Training classes will help to socialize your Pug, provide your Pug with a routine, and help with discipline issues. Going to classes together is also a great way to bond with him. Training is also a great way to help a dog stay calm as he learns what you want him to do, and he will be more clear about what is expected of him. Final Thoughts Pugs may seem hyper, but they are mostly just happy energetic dogs. Once you get through the puppy stage and have some training and a routine established, your Pug will become a fun, relaxed dog who will sleep on your lap, play with you, lick you, and be a great companion! Share this post:. March 30, by Susan Most dogs usually have a hyperedge to them, but some can be a bit too hyper for most people. Seasoned pug owners can all come to agree that their dogs can be pretty active and curious most of the day, and that can raise questions for new and confused pug owners. Why Are Pugs So Hyper? Hyperactivity affects all puppies, regardless of breed. Excessive hyperactivity in pugs is usually a result of extreme excitement or reaction to someone or something else being hyper as well. Pugs are companion dogs, therefore they are more susceptible to separation anxiety , which may lead to excessive hyperactivity. It is most detectable in puppies, but it can also affect adult pugs too. Pugs with high energy can be very active and even aggressive, but this is completely normal. It just means that it will happen less often, as older dogs will just want to cuddle next to their owner. The zoomies are considered to be normal behavior for breeds like pugs. With that being said, there is no need to be too concerned about it, especially since it only lasts for a few minutes at a time. There is still a need to be a bit cautious though, as too much activity can get out of hand fast. What Triggers Frenetic Random Activity Periods in Pugs As mentioned above, pugs can get pretty excited from the sight of someone or something else getting excited. If people are being playful and fun with one another, the pug will want to join in and get in on the action as well. It is just a natural part of their DNA. Pugs can also become really excited and hyper when certain things in the atmosphere make noise or commotion. This includes things like doorbells, people, kids, and more. Most pugs will react by squealing or running around the area. Another thing that can easily trigger the zoomies in most pugs is bath time. Many Pug owners will tell you that your pooch can become overly animated after bath time. This hyper behavior is an expression of happiness that the bath is over. That is usually because dog bathing requires the owner to restrain the dog for a while and use water that may be uncomfortable for them. This can easily make any dog pretty stressed out and fearful. When the bath is over, they are relieved. Mindy my Pug would get the zoomies whenever we would try to dry her off with a towel after her bath. An episode of hyperactivity will involve a short burst of energy when your pooch runs around in a wild run. Here are some of the signs to watch for your Pug has a case of the zoomies. They suddenly break into a gallop from standing still. Excited eyes A squatted run like they are going to attack something. They will run in tight turns and spins to change direction quickly. Watch this video to see what the zoomies look like. Are Zoomies Dangerous? However, if you live in a small space, your dog can knock over things and make a mess in their frenzy. They may slip on a rug or your hardwood floors and bump into your coffee table, or other furniture and hurt themselves. As a Pug parent, there are some things you can do to help control this type of behavior to keep them safe. Some pet owners will notice their Pugs become more hyper at night or in the early morning hours. A hyperactive Pug can be hard to calm down, but it is possible to settle your dog down. A long day of playing and exercise will make the dog tired at the end of the day. In that case, it is best to try to set up some sort of playtime area or routine that the pug can do to keep itself entertained for a certain amount of time during the day. If you have a fenced-in backyard, you can install a pet door and allow Fido to play outside, just make sure there are no dangers in your backyard. That gives the owner a break and the pug the ability to exercise and wear itself out. Another good idea would be to take it to a dog park for a day of fun and exercise. It is best to try to reach for 30 minutes of daily exercise. This can be easily achieved with two 15 minute walks or two 15 minutes games of fetch. Create a Daily Routine If a pug is working on a daily routine with the owner, this may help lower stress and anxiety. It is best to try to stick to a consistent and easy schedule from morning to night. Include everything from waking up and eating breakfast to settling down and eating dinner. This kind of behavior is nothing to worry about — especially if your Pug is still young. These bursts of activity usually last for just a few minutes so unless your Pug is displaying an excessive amount of hyperactivity on a daily basis, you can rest easy. Typical triggers for the zoomies include: Excitement — did the doorbell ring? Is the postman round the corner? Whatever gets your Pug excited could trigger the zoomies. Queue hyperactivity. Anxiety — Does your Pug get the zoomies every time you arrive home from work? This is not uncommon. Pugs are prone to separation anxiety. Having a bath can be uncomfortable and stressful for dogs. Pablo the Pug has the zoomies! When people get a Pug puppy for the first time, they often ask me: will my Pug ever calm down? And the answer is yes. Although it can carry on into adulthood, canine hyperactivity is most prevalent in puppies. This is a natural and important part of puppyhood. Most Pug puppies will start to calm down as they mature. They will still get the zoomies from time to time, but the days of their puppyish antics should diminish considerably. In most cases, the zoomies are nothing to worry about. Random bouts of hyperactivity are part and parcel of being a dog. The zoomies are usually over in a few minutes, and your Pug should remain relatively calm for the rest of the day. However, there are some practical considerations to take note of. Many Pug owners find that they can predict when their pup is going to get a bout of the zoomies, giving them a window to remove any hazards ahead of time. How To Keep Pug Hyperactivity At Bay Even though periods of hyperactivity are completely normal, there are some things we can do to keep our Pugs as calm as possible and moderate that frenetic behavior. Regular exercise Daily exercise and playtime will use up your Pugs excess energy and reduce the chance of a hyperactive episode. Aim for between 20 and 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Aim to split this into two e. Once they are all tuckered out, your Pug will just want to snuggle on the sofa with mum or dad. If you spend a significant amount of the day away at work then try to ensure that your Pug has plenty of opportunities to engage in independent play. You might wish to create a designated play area or provide some treat-dispensing toys. Daily routines Keeping to a solid routine is really beneficial for Pug behavior. Routines alleviate stress and anxiety and promote consistent behaviors. By reducing stressors, your Pug is less likely to indulge in anxiety-driven hyperactivity. Additionally, if you know when your Pug is likely to act out, you can provide a fun distraction to divert their attention. Socialization Socialization with people and other dogs is essential for healthy canine development. Socializing provides mental and physical stimulation and makes use of all that excess energy. If not, why not buddy up with a dog-owner friend or visit a dog park a few times each week. Reduce anxiety For some Pugs, the key to reducing hyperactivity is treating the root of the problem — anxiety. As social animals, Pugs are particularly prone to separation anxiety. Finding ways to minimize the distress your pet feels will help them to calm down. Distractions are great that could be a fun toy or puzzle. Some Pug owners have even tried canine aromatherapy. Last Words Are Pugs hyper? Yes, they certainly can be. But a moderate amount of hyperactivity is nothing to worry about. Most of the time the zoomies die down after puppyhood. However, there are ways to keep hyperactive behaviors at bay. Exercise, moderating anxiety, adequate socialization, and consistent daily routines can make the world of difference.

Is there anything cuter than a two-month-old Golden Retriever puppy? At eight weeks old, they are absolutely, impossibly, unbearably adorable! At two months old, a Golden Retriever is ready to leave their mother and littermates to join their new family. Some breeders will keep a puppy for a couple more weeks before sending them home, but eight weeks is very typical. Puppies at this age are usually playful and curious, with brains like little sponges. This usually only lasts a day or two, and then their true personality will shine through! They are in the prime socialization window here, which is the time between three and sixteen weeks when puppies are most open to learning about the world. Proper socialization can help you buffer against potential behavior issues as your pup matures, and teaches them how to feel and act in different situations and environments. It helps them feel confident and self-assured. A two-month-old Golden Retriever puppy is constantly learning! Make sure your puppy is learning that they are safe and that they can trust you both at home and out in the world. A fear period is a temporary span of time where a puppy may be more sensitive to things like strange people, strange dogs, inanimate objects, sounds, etc. It usually lasts about a week and you may notice your puppy showing signs of fear such as cowering, running away, growling, or barking. It can be a little scary as the owner of a puppy to see them acting this way. The good thing is that a fear period is short-lived and will pass. If they are concerned about something or someone, help them get more distance so they can observe the thing while feeling safe. They have a lot of needs and are totally dependent on you to meet those needs. Be patient as you help them learn how to live in our human world, and you can develop a strong, positive bond with your new companion. Getting a golden retriever puppy? Check out the Golden Retriever Puppy Handbook! This is heavily influenced by genetics, but is not always the best indicator of their adult weight. Some lines of Goldens are bigger or smaller than average, so puppy size will reflect that. Your vet can help you make sure that your puppy is at an appropriate weight if you have any concerns. Eight-week-old Golden Retrievers need around 18 hours of sleep each day. Oftentimes, a puppy that is wild and bitey is in fact overly tired and in need of a nap. It may seem like they need more exercise to drain that crazy energy, but they actually need sleep. Using crates and pens can help ensure that your puppy is getting enough sleep at night and throughout the day. Many two-month-old Goldens are not good at putting themselves down for a nap, even when they really need it. So, you may need to step in and help your puppy settle in for some sleep. Make sure that their crate or pen is nice and comfy before you put them in for a nap, so they are more able to relax and fall asleep. Every puppy is different, so yours may prefer a nice cushy bed , or they may actually like laying on the bare floor. You can take note of what kinds of surfaces your puppy lays on around the house and then recreate that in the crate or pen. Covering the crate or pen with a blanket can also help make sleep easier for a two-month-old puppy, as it cuts down on the visual stimulation. Products like Adaptil spray or diffuser , and the Snuggle Puppy toy can also help a puppy settle in for sleep. Chewing and licking are naturally calming behaviors for puppies, so it can also help if you offer something like a stuffed kong , which can assist in transitioning the puppy from awake to asleep. Playing Classical music can also help a puppy feel more calm and able to sleep. At this age, most two-month-old puppies are ready for sleep after about an hour of awake time, so by following these tips, you can help make sure your puppy is getting enough quality rest. Instead, you can give them a break and see if they choose to get up, or simply scoop them up and walk home. Sometimes people get a Golden Retriever to be a running or biking companion, which can be a great thing when the pup is a fully grown adult, but is too much exercise for a young puppy. Playing with toys in the house or in the yard can be a great way for young pups to burn some of that puppy energy. If you have a yard, letting your pup safely explore and run around outside can also be a nice way to get in some exercise. You may also find that your puppy needs more sleep on some days, and on other days, they need more playtime and exercise. Golden Retrievers as a breed can also vary a lot in terms of exercise needs. Some are pretty laid back and chill and others are up for anything and want to go hard. These differences can be reflected in how much energy your puppy has, as well as in what kind and how much exercise your puppy needs. Training is an excellent way to build a positive bond with your puppy and create a way to communicate with each other. Group puppy classes can be a good option for getting started with training, as the trainer will help you learn how to train your pup. You can also hire a certified, professional trainer to come to your home and provide personalized training guidance for you and your puppy. Before you sign up with any trainer, be sure to ask them what kind of training methods and tools they use, to avoid causing any physical or mental distress for your puppy. Potty training is definitely a top priority for two-month-old puppies. They have small bladders and bowels and will need frequent trips outside to help them learn appropriate potty behavior. Crate training can also be started at this age, as learning how to be okay with confinement is an important life skill. Eight-week-old Golden Retriever puppies eat about a half cup of food three times per day. There is no one-size-fits-all rule when it comes to feeding your two-month-old Golden. Puppies at this age need more frequent meals than adult Goldens, so three meals a day is recommended. Because two-month-old Goldens are undergoing so much growth at this stage, feed them high-quality food that can support them as they mature. Most Goldens have big appetites and will happily gobble down their meals when you serve them. Using slow feeder bowls like this bowl on Amazon , or other food dispensing toys, such as the Planet Dog Snoop , can help slow down their eating and provide them some mental stimulation while they eat. Puppies like to put things in their mouth as a way to learn and play. Unfortunately, it can be pretty painful for humans, as those puppy teeth are needle-sharp! There are, however, some things you can do to minimize and deal with the biting. First, ensure that your two-month-old Golden is getting enough sleep. Overly tired puppies tend to get super bitey and frenzied, so naps are key to preventing your puppy from turning into a piranha. Your floor might look a little cluttered, but it helps to keep toys within reach for a quick redirection. Third, you can simply give the puppy a break if they are on a biting spree. You could step on the other side of a baby gate or put them in their pen to calm down a bit, and then resume the play. This communicates to the puppy that when they bite, they lose access to you and the fun stops. A common piece of advice when dealing with puppy biting is to yelp in response to their nip, as if you were another dog. This is actually not a good way to handle puppy biting and can actually make it worse. Other puppies will be further excited by the yelp sound and come at you with even more intensity, resulting in harder bites. Good Beginnings Bringing a two-month-old Golden Retriever home is a very exciting thing. It can also feel pretty overwhelming as you figure out how to care for and train them. You might be sleep-deprived and have a couple scratches on your hand from those sharp puppy teeth, but try to keep in mind that this is the beginning of a special relationship with an incredible animal. Focus on bonding with your puppy, teaching them about the world, and creating good habits from the start. Have any questions about raising eight-week-old golden retrievers? Let me know down in the comments! Read the rest of our Golden Retriever puppy series here:. We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. Check out our whelping supplies checklist here. However, none were overly huge and none were extra small. No runts and no beasts. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! Week 7 — The great puppy escape artists! Week 8 — Our golden puppies head to their new homes. Have you ever had a litter of Golden Retriever puppies?
