First, you have to make sure you buy the right size for your dog. Next, you have to clean each paw pad before applying the gripper. After that, you need to repeat the whole process. While they may not be my cup of tea, many other dog owners report success when using paw grips. If you want to replace your flooring on the cheap, consider interlocking floor tiles. Made from rubber, these are often used when setting up a gym or exercise area in the home. I love interlocking floor tiles because they can be placed over your existing flooring. When they are no longer needed, they can be removed without damaging your oak hardwood floor underneath. Building a new home or renovating? When planning, why not consider a non-slip flooring option for your dog? Carpet in particular provides excellent traction for dogs. Training Some dogs are outright afraid of walking on a slippery floor. This can lead them to be extra cautious as they walk across a slippery floor. Unfortunately, awkwardly walking across the floor can only make the problem worse. Or your dog might be so terrified of your tiles that he will avoid walking on them altogether. Often, the only way to overcome this fear of walking on slippery surfaces is to train the behavior out of your dog. We recommend working with a behaviorist or a positive-reinforcement trainer who can help your dog overcome their fears. Doggy Dan is an excellent resource for at-home training methods that can help dogs on a variety of issues including anxiety in certain situations like walking on hardwood floors. Visit your vet Is your dog slipping and falling on your hardwood floor? The problem may not be your floor. It might be your dog. Some medical issues make it difficult to walk across slippery flooring: Physical injuries Torn ACL, Broken leg, sprain etc. Arthritis Hip and hind leg problems Joint issues Spine or disk problems Vestibular disease Affects balance These symptoms may be invisible when walking on easy-to-grip surfaces. Let me know in the comments below! However, despite their popularity, they are prone to a wide range of health issues. Many of these issues can be triggered or made worse by jumping from higher surfaces too. As a result, more and more French Bulldog owners are introducing their pups to dog ramps in order to provide them with an impact-free way of getting on and off furniture. Why is it bad for French Bulldogs to jump on and off furniture? In addition to being a brachycephalic short-nosed breed, French Bulldogs are also a chondrodystrophic breed. These are dogs with short legs in comparison to the size or length of their bodies, which makes them have a higher risk of developing back and limb issues. As well, although French Bulldogs tend to have muscular bodies, they only reach heights of inches at the shoulder - making them shorter than nearly all couches and beds. Therefore, the impact from jumping off furniture can put a great deal of stress on their backs and joints and even aggravate spinal and joint conditions. If your French Bulldog likes spending time on your couch or bed, indoor dog ramps can give your pup an easier and safer way of enjoying his or her favorite hangout spots. This French Bulldog's owners chose to introduce their pup to a ramp in order to protect his joints. They shared: "We knew jumping on and off the couch would be really bad for their back and joints. It probably took a minute for him to start using it and now he has one for our bed as well. Thank you so much for making the ramps. I wish we could have them when we had our dachshunds many years ago. Like humans, dogs have intervertebral discs between each pair of vertebrae on their spine. These discs function as cushions and shock absorbers for the neck and back. IVDD occurs when the outer layers of these discs begin to harden prematurely. This makes it easier for a disc to bulge or burst after experiencing a harder impact or injury from a simple everyday activity, such jumping off furniture or wrestling. Following an emergency surgery to treat a herniated disc, Winston the Frenchie had to remain on crate rest for a minimum of 3 weeks. His paw-rents had to use a sling to support his body so that he could eat his meals. However, dog ramps can provide French Bulldogs with an impact-free means of accessing couches, beds, and other pieces of furniture. Karl the Frenchie thejaxkarlandkevinshow experienced a ruptured disc in his neck in early due to IVDD. After undergoing cervical spine surgery to correct the disc, Karl has made an incredible recovery. However, he now strictly uses his DoggoRamps to access the couch and bed. This helps him reduce the amount of stress he places on his back on a daily basis and can help decrease the chances of another disc flaring up. In , the 4-year-old Frenchie was not only diagnosed with IVDD but underwent two spinal surgeries due to the condition. It all started near the end of April when Winston showed a sudden change in behavior and no longer had interest in his favorite routines. He quickly started displaying signs of discomfort and experienced trouble holding himself up with his front legs. An MRI confirmed that Winston had a herniated disc in his cervical spine. He was immediately admitted for an emergency back surgery and had a very successful recovery. Winston the day after his first surgery. In order to operate on his cervical spine, his veterinary team had to make an incision along the upper part of his chest. Unfortunately, just a handful of months later, he experienced another disc extrusion - this time in his lumbar spine, where he lost function in his back legs. After undergoing yet another spinal surgery, weeks of rest, and physical rehabilitation, Winston is in the process of making another amazing recovery. He has regained control of his hind legs and is back to enjoying his daily walks outdoors. On top of taking a handful of additional precautions to reduce the chances of future episodes, such as prioritizing gentle play and avoiding stairs, Winston uses his DoggoRamps Couch Ramp to easily and safely enjoy his favorite hangout spots. Dogs with patellar luxation can usually be seen limping, skipping, or kicking while walking in order to snap their kneecaps back into place. Patellar luxation has varying levels of severity and even in its mildest form, it can cause dogs some discomfort and pain. The impact experienced from jumping off furniture can further exacerbate the condition as well. Introducing dogs with Patellar Luxation to ramps can help them reduce how much strain they put on their knees and help them enjoy a higher quality of life. While Hip Dysplasia is usually associated with large breeds, such as German Shepherds and Labrador Retrievers, Frenchies are prone to the condition as well. Rather than sliding smoothly, the ball and socket that make up the hip joint rub and grind causing the joint to deteriorate over time. The condition can cause dogs to experience discomfort, pain, decreased mobility, and lameness in their hind legs. Non-genetic factors can lead to the development of Hip Dysplasia too, such as excessive growth, certain types of exercise, injury, and improper nutrition. As an impact-free alternative to jumping on and off furniture, using dog ramps can help French Bulldogs decrease the amount of stress they put on their hip joints over time and allow Frenchies to easily and comfortably enjoy their home environments. After Hank got the hang of using his DoggoRamps Couch Ramp , thewindycityfrenchie's paw-rent wrote: "the ramp helps his joints and alleviates so much pain that he was getting from jumping. If you find yourself choosing between a dog ramp or pet stairs for your French Bulldog, a dog ramp will always be the better choice. This is less than ideal for breeds prone to back and joint issues as these impacts still put additional strain on their joints and spine. A dog ramp is the only solution that is entirely impact-free. Rocko's paw-rents introduced him to a ramp after the pup decided he had the potential to become the "Olympic champion of jumping off [their] high standing bed". They initially tried to get Rocko to use plastic steps, but he refused. When providing their feedback about the DoggoRamps Small Bed Ramp , his owners emphasized: "This ramp was a complete God send for keeping my pup healthy and safe. Bred as companion dogs, Frenchies love attention, cuddling, napping, and spending time with their owners. Dog ramps can provide them with the opportunity to easily and safely enjoy some of their favourite activities, such as snuggling up with their human on the couch or bed. As free-spirited dogs with outgoing personalities, many French Bulldogs are also known for getting bursts of energy where they often end up running and goofing around. Even though French Bulldogs are rather short, they have a muscular build and can weigh up to 30lbs. DoggoRamps allow French Bulldogs remain comfortable and safe while use a dog ramp. Low-Incline Design and Extra Wide Platforms All of our full ramps have a low-incline design and provide dogs with a more gradual slope to navigate when walking up and down. Reversible and Removable Safety Rails on Taller Dog Ramps DoggoRamps Bed Ramps feature a wide range of adjustable height settings so that they can work with virtually any bed - including tall beds. As a result, both bed ramps come with reversible and removable safety railings. These railings help block any jumping shortcuts off the ramp and guide dogs up and down the full length of the ramp. This extra feature is particularly important for shorter dogs using bed ramps, such as French Bulldogs, as the impact from jumping a distance times their height can put unnecessary strain on their bodies. They shared: "We've previously bought pet stairs for our French Bulldog puppy, Mochi, but felt that the stairs were not durable and stable. His paws would sink into the foam because of his weight. We decided to switch to a bed ramp instead because it is more secure especially with the safety rails and the soft, rubbery anti-slip surface. Also, it is adjustable to the height of our bed and the low incline design allows him to walk safely up to our bed as opposed to before when he would run up the stairs. Medical bills can quickly add up and frenchie owners may struggle to pay vet expenses and eventually surrender their fur baby to a French Bulldog rescue. Before getting your first Frenchie breed dog We encourage you to do as much research as possible and explore all possible health issues in the French Bulldog breed. While selecting a good responsible breeder can greatly reduce the risks of major health issues in your Frenchie, you must understand that life does not have guarantees. Breeders usually provide one year health guarantee against major genetic health issues. After the year is up you are pretty much on your own. Frenchies are not cheap! If you are struggling financially to get your first Frenchie you probably should not get the Frenchie breed. Here are the most common French Bulldog health issues: 1. While these dogs have an unusually squeezed face, they are loved by many pet owners all over the world. Unfortunately, the physiology of their face predisposes brachycephalic dog breeds to certain health conditions. The condition is not a single health problem, but can manifest in different forms including: Labored breathing Inability to exercise for a sustained period due to reduced oxygen intake Tendency to suffer from heat stroke because of their inability to pant efficiently Brachycephalic dogs suffer from all these conditions because of the shape of their head. These dogs have an elongated soft palate which obstructs the windpipe which is very narrow in brachy dogs, cutting off air supply from the outside. Paddy, a 1 year old male English Bulldog, was referred by his usual vets to see Chris Shales, one of Willows soft tissue Specialist surgeons, because his owners had noticed he was having increasing problems with his breathing. Chris found that Paddy had severe airway problems associated with his head shape a condition known as 'brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome' or BOAS, which affects short nosed breeds of dogs and cats. Chris discussed things with Paddy's concerned owners and it was decided that he should undergo surgery to try to improve his breathing and his quality of life. During surgery, Chris performed a number of procedures inside Paddy's throat to help to improve the flow of air passing to and from his lungs. The good news is that Paddy recovered well from his surgery and was soon able to go home. Paddy's at his re-check appointment with Chris a week later when he was a much happier and quieter boy! We looked at many hospitals and surgeons. We took him to several surgery consultations until we felt comfortable and confident with the doctor we chose. We asked success rate of each and every surgeon we saw. Please do not be afraid to ask their success rate as well as how many dogs died in their care. This question alone had a huge impact on the surgeon we ultimately chose. Problems with Anesthesia -due to their compromised airways, brachys face a higher risk of complication due to anesthesia compared to dogs with normal facial physiology. The reason is the dog cannot get enough oxygen during the anesthetic and while trying to wake up from the procedure. Many vets feel jittery to perform surgeries on brachys due to the increased risk of something going wrong during and after the operation. If you own a brachy which needs surgery, make sure the veterinary doctor informs you of the risk involved in the procedure and take necessary precautions. One thing the surgeon or vet will not tell you is that BOAS surgery is not a fix for life. In time BOAS does come back somewhat. The nose and other parts do close up and resort to the genes of the dog. An owner of a dog with a previous diagnosis of BOAS will never be care free however there are many ways you can help and manage this condition and give your dog the best quality of life possible. How we innovated our Health Harness Prior and after surgery we struggled to find a harness that did not choke Bluenjy while walking due to pulling. When using the back D ring in a regular harness the fabric of the neck region would pull him backwards and constricted his neck. Inspired by our Frenchie for the health and safety of your pet. On several occasions we noticed Bluenjy choking to stop for air with a cough. We couldn't find a single dog harness on the market that had all the elements we were looking for. Lastly, we wanted a dog harness that was fashionable to accommodate Bluenjy's sense of style. After months of engineering, trial and error we developed a Health Harness that is vet approved and supports the emotional and physical well being of our Frenchie Bluenjy. Furthermore there may be other charges associated not mentioned above for instance we had to get a cardiovascular assessment and tests prior to the BOAS surgery which resulted in additional costs. Is Boas hereditary? BOAS can be passed on to puppies and is inherited. This is the reason it is extremely important to find a reputable breeder. Why is my French bulldog gagging? Gagging, vomiting or regurgitating in Frenchies or other brachycephalic breeds all describe their inability to digest food and water properly due to the shape of their head. This is one of the most common symptom of BOAS. BOAS can cause heatstroke Unlike humans, dogs cannot sweat because they lack sweat glands. The only way dogs release excess body heat is panting. However, brachycephalic dogs have a smaller mouth and inefficient airway, making it difficult for them to dissipate heat. This weakness makes them susceptible to heat stroke. It is important to know heat stroke can lead to death in brachys, which is why such dogs must never be allowed to become overweight. An overweight brachy dog has more fat that traps in heat, increasing the chances of heat stroke. Further read: What is the ideal weight of a Frenchie? Whether you own a French Bulldog, or Lhasa Apso, it is vital to keep your brachy in top shape by exercising the dog regularly, providing healthy and nutritious meals and be on the lookout for any sudden changes in your pet's normal sounds. The shape of the skull and nose of these dogs make it difficult for them to breathe effectively and dissipate heat. The result is that brachys tend to overheat quickly, putting them at a higher risk of heatstroke, which can become an emergency. Here, we look at simple ways to cool your brachy dogs during the hot months. It might be cool and breezy outside, but make sure your brachy dog stays indoors as much as possible during the summer. Invest in dog cooling accessories A cooling mat is an effective way to help your brachy dog cope with the high summer temperatures. You can buy a cooling mat at the store or online at relatively affordable prices. Alternatively, you can make a simple cooling mat by freezing water and wrapping the frozen water inside a heavy towel. Place the towel in the canine's bed but make sure it does not touch your dog's skin directly. Dog cooling bandana If you want an inexpensive and effective cooling accessory you can place directly on your dog you can purchase Frenchiestore cooling bandana. These pawfect innovative cooling bandanas are compact, small and effective. All you have to do is wet it, wring it and place it on your dog. The cooling light mesh fabric will stay cold for hours. The same applies to your smushed face pup. During the high heat season, make sure there is always an abundance of cool drinking water in your dog's bowl. Reduce Physical Activity While your brachy still needs to exercise during the hot months, you want to reduce the frequency of physical activity to avoid overheating. A good rule of thumb is to monitor the dog's sound. If the breathing becomes labored or too noisy, let your dog rest immediately. Remember that the head shape of pug face dogs makes it difficult to breath, and physical activity increases the energy needs of the animal. Exercise your brachy during the summer, but in moderation. You can reduce the risk of overheating by providing a kiddie pool to cool down the summer heat. However, the pool must be under a shade and you need to change it whenever it becomes warm or hot. Otherwise, you will end up overheating your adorable pooch. This condition affected our family. Brachycephalic dogs need constant supervision. As a responsible pet owner, know your dog and pay attention to their sounds. Make sure to provide as much comfort and love. Support their physical and mental well being and give them the best quality of life possible. BOAS is not a death sentence, with your help your pooch can live a long and healthy life. Eye challenges in French Bulldogs Due to the smushed face of brachy dogs, the French Bulldogs eyes have limited socket space. Further, the overly exposed eyes of brachycephalic dogs make their eyes dry and irritated frequently. This is one of the reasons a collar is never recommended for daily walks and could potentially be dangerous especially if your Frenchie dog is a puller. Checking for a Corneal Ulcer in an English Bulldog If you own a French Bulldog chances are you dealt with eye ulcer at some point in their life. This is a very common injury since they don't have a nose to protect their eyes. Conjunctivitis Pinkeye Conjunctivitis or pink eye in French Bulldog is an inflamed eye tissue. Symptoms include but not limited to: swollen eyelid, red eyes, squinting or blinking excessively, discharge from the eyes and rubbing the eyes with paws. Conjunctivitis can be caused by allergies, dry eye, or other irritants. Treatment can include antibiotics in the event of a bacterial infection. Other eye issues that can be found in the French Bulldog breed: Entropion. Skin Allergies in the Frenchie Does your dog itch constantly? There are so many different type of skin allergies they can be difficult to identify at times even by a professional vet. To examine if your dog is allergic to a certain food, your vet will create an elimination diet comprising non-allergic foods. Most vetrinarians recommend duck protein as it is the least known protein to cause allergies to dogs by modern medicine. For itchy paws we recommend Iodine foot soak. Atopic Dermatitis Atopic dermatitis or atopy is an environmental allergy resulting from contact with allergens such as pollen, mold spores, plants, and grass or dust mite among others. Environmental allergies are a common cause of discomfort for many dogs, often requiring a visit to the vet. Brachycephalic dogs are more prone to environmental allergies because of the skin folds and short snout. As a pet owner, you should always be on the lookout for signs of these allergies. If left untreated, the affected spot can become infected and transform into generalized dermatitis. It is best to prevent these allergies from happening in the first place as they cause great discomfort for your dog. The condition is contagious and an infected dog can spread it to other dogs and humans. Call your vet for advice immediately. You can manage ringworm with oral medications and medicated washes based on the level of infection. Dandruff In dogs, dandruff results from skin irritation or excessive skin dryness. If your dog has dandruff, increase his intake of high quality protein and omega-3 and 6 fatty acids for enhanced skin and coat health. Reverse sneeze is usually triggered byexcitement or stress and may be related to allergies, nasal irritants or nasal inflammation. It can also be triggered by a viral infections like the common cold or a dog collar pressing against the throat too tightly. It happens more often in small breed dogs Brachycephalic breeds like pugs and bulldogs perhaps because they have smaller throats and windpipes. Symptoms of reverse sneeze attack Your dog will look distressed. May besnorting or choking. Will have rapid and long inspirations Struggle for air. Its important to keep calm and not to panic!!! This arouses the canine's gums, and can prompt gum disease, and discharge. Obviously, it will come with incredibly, terrible breath. Dietary Habits - where has your dog been? Dogs once in a while will get into things they shouldn't have such as: drink from a toilet, get into trash and even eat their own feces. Some pooches eat the feces of other canines, a condition called coprophagia. In addition to the fact that this is foul, it is incredibly unhygienic. Tooth brushing reduces plaque and promotes higher oral hygiene. With a bit of training most puppies learn to adjust to having their teeth brushed. Offering your canine with plenty of chew toys can also be helpful. Chewing prevents plaque and tartar construct-up and relieves boredom, maintaining your dog healthy and happy. Smaller dogs may require extra dental care than large dog breeds as they are more prone to periodontal disease, according to the akc health foundation. Smaller breeds have a tendency to have teeth that are closer together, which promotes plaque and tartar build-up, so make certain you provide them with lots of bite toys from a younger age and brush their enamel frequently. If the anal sac s are not operating properly, the fluid builds up inside those glands and might result in a foul smell. What are anal sacs glands? Despite the fact they are usually known as anal glands, they're technically not glandular in structure. Anal sacs are small sacs located on both aspect of the anus between the inner and outside anal sphincter muscular tissues. There are instances, however, that they may not function the way they were supposed to and turn into bags of fluid. If your dog has been experiencing watery stools or diarrhea chances are that no sufficient strain is being applied and the sac can possibly get full. The patella, or "kneecap," is normally located in a groove on the end of the femur, or thighbone. The term luxating means "out of place" or "dislocated". Therefore, a luxating patella is a kneecap that moves out of its normal location. It generally resumes its normal anatomical orientation after only a brief period of luxation in most dogs. For some dogs, this happens in mere seconds, for others in minutes and still others may never receive relief from the condition. The patella can dislocate in two ways, either laterally or medially. In most cases a dog will suffer from medial luxating patella, which is less apparent than lateral, while those with lateral luxating patella suffer from a more debilitating condition. In fact, Hines writes that lateral luxation occurs more often in larger breeds as a result of poor skeletal alignment. About 50 percent of dogs with luxating patella will have it in both knees and the other 50 percent will carry the problem in one knee alone. If left untreated, luxated patella can lead to more stressful and painful conditions. Patellar luxation occurs within four levels of severity, with each level displaying similar as well as unique symptoms. Their kneecaps pop out of place intermittently and can be easily massaged back into place when the legs are extended. The kneecaps can be massaged back into their grooves, but they pop back out again once the knees are manually flexed or they have taken a few steps. With time, some of these pets will develop pain and arthritis associated with their problem. These dogs have a hard time walking. Dogs that have suffered this degree of joint damage for more than a year or two usually have pain, and have developed arthritis and degenerative joint disease. They usually walk with crouching stances and stand knock-kneed with their toes turned inward. Hines makes it clear that in the more severe levels, grades 3 and 4, a dog most likely developed the condition earlier in life but never saw a doctor until it was middle-aged. Most of the animals seen by veterinarians for this condition are over six months old, but severe defects can be pronounced as soon as eight to ten weeks of age. As time passes, this inflammation becomes more generalized to involve most of the supportive cartilage and fibrous tissues of the knee. Genetics plays a large role in the causes behind patellar luxation. As previously discussed, several smaller breeds are more prone to this condition than others. She goes on to explain that though luxating patella can be the result of traumatic injury to the knee, most luxating patella comes without a clear cause. Dogs diagnosed early on with patellar luxation that are predisposed to it and have not had any trauma to their knees most likely have the condition as a result of abnormalities in their entire hind limb. For this reason, as Dr. In almost all cases, this is a problem the pet is born with. Although only one knee may appear to be affected, in most cases, both knees share some degree of the problem. Second is a trochlear groove that is too shallow. In order for the patella not to jump out of this tract, the groove must be deep enough to accommodate and cradle the patella as it moves up and down in the groove. Some dogs are born with an abnormally shallow trochlear groove. Third is a problem that occurs when the lower attachment of the kneecap ligament is too far to the inner side of the shinbone or tibia. This is a frequent problem in dogs that are bred to have exceptionally short legs like Dachshunds. When dogs develop luxating patellas before the tibia has reached maturity, it is also possible for the point of attachment to shift inward — throwing off the alignment. How is Luxating Patella Diagnosed? If you notice that your dog is exhibiting signs of luxating patella, such as skipping, yelping in pain while running, or popping sounds within the knee area, take her in to see a veterinarian. The next steps involve determining the level of severity of the patellar luxation and determining whether or not any arthritic changes have occurred. Hines tells pet parents to seek the professional evaluation of at least two veterinarians to help determine the grade of the condition and whether or not your dog will need surgery. In order to determine the most appropriate treatment, writes Griffon, your vet may do any of the following tests: Palpation of the knee under sedation to assess damage to ligaments Radiographs of the pelvis, knee and occasionally the tibias to evaluate the shape of the bones in the rear leg and rule out hip dysplasia Three-dimensional computed tomography to provide an image of the skeleton of the rear legs to help the surgeon plan surgery where the shape of the femur or tibia needs correcting Blood work and urine analysis as a precaution before anesthesia How is Luxating Patella Treated? The only viable treatment for patellar luxation is surgery. Dogs with grade 1 or grade 2 patellar luxation not exhibiting signs of pain do not need surgery. Hines recommends that these dogs be kept on a balanced diet and kept lean to alleviate any extra weight on the hips and knees that could aggravate the condition. Dogs that show signs of pain, are in the beginning stages of knee arthritis and those that fall in grades 3 and 4 require surgery. As Dr. Foster explains, dogs at this stage will absolutely require surgical attention. Left untreated, patellar luxation can worsen and make it more and more difficult for a dog to walk. If your dog requires surgery for this condition, she will undergo one or several of three surgeries: lateral imbrications, trochlear modification, or tibial crest transposition. As Griffon explains, the surgeries are as follows and involve the outlined procedures: Lateral Imbrication also called Lateral Reinforcement When the patella slips out of its groove, the joint capsule surrounding it is stretched to allow this motion. Imbrication simply involves taking a tuck in the joint capsule. The tightened joint capsule does not allow for the slipping of the kneecap and the kneecap is confined to its proper groove. Trochlear Modification The patella rides in a groove at the bottom of the femur thigh bone. In toy breed dogs this groove is shallow, which allows the patella to slip. If the groove is deepened, the patella stays where it belongs. The normal groove in the femur is lined by slippery lubricated cartilage, called hyaline cartilage. This cartilage is peeled or cut away, the bone underneath is sliced out to form a deeper groove, and the cartilage is replaced. Techniques that do not preserve the original cartilage are no longer recommended. Tibial Crest Transposition If the knock-kneed conformation has already started to set in, the tibias or leg bones will have rotated; specifically, the crest on the tibia where the thigh muscle the quadriceps femoris attaches may have migrated inward. If this is the case, the crest will have to be removed and pinned back where it belongs to straighten out the leg. Severe rotation of the tibias may involve actually cutting through the entire bone and de-rotating it back into place. Following the surgery, your dog will go through a period of recovery. Your dog will be sent home bandaged up and you will most likely be told to restrict her exercise. If your dog needs to go outdoors, use a leash and be careful not to allow too much activity. If your dog is difficult to keep calm, you may want to speak to your veterinarian about tranquilization to keep her from causing harm to the leg. As always, an Elizabethean collar will most likely go home with your dog to keep her from chewing at the stitches. Some veterinarians, Hines writes, will give dogs antibiotics to deter infections. Complications after the surgery are minimal and a dog is usually up and back to her old tricks within three to four weeks if only the knee ligaments were reinforced. The recovery time is longer for the more complicated procedures, about six to eight weeks. As with any breed, French bulldogs are predisposed to getting certain diseases. For example, many German shepherds are more likely to have hip problems. Cocker spaniels are more likely to get ear infections. Dachshunds are known for developing back problems such as intervertebral disc disease IVDD. French bulldogs have grown immensely in popularity over the last few years and are quickly becoming known for also developing intervertebral disc disease. In fact, some weeks I see more French bulldogs than I do dachshunds. Since IVDD is so common in French bulldogs, it can come on suddenly and can cause permanent inability to use the legs. Just like in people, the neck and back are made up of multiple bones lined up in a row. These bones are called vertebrae. The vertebrae surround and protect the spinal cord, which transmits information from the brain to the legs and from the legs back to the brain. In between each pair of vertebrae is an intervertebral disc that is shaped like a jelly donut. The disc has an inner jelly part and an outer donut part. Intervertebral discs act as spacers and cushions between the bones of the neck and back. In certain breeds, including the French bulldog, the jelly inside part of the disc can come out of the donut at high speed. When this happens, it hits the spinal cord, causing bruising and swelling. Additionally, it compresses the spinal cord. Symptoms of IVDD depend on where the disc problem is neck versus back and how severe the spinal cord injury is. Walking wobbly or drunk in all four legs. Sometimes French bulldogs may drag the toenails or occasionally stumble and fall in the limbs. Unable to walk in all four legs. Symptoms of a slipped disc in the back may include from mildest to more severe : Back pain, tense belly, not wanting to eat, crying when picked up and reluctance to jump. Walking wobbly or drunk in the rear limbs. They may scuff the toes or criss-cross the limbs. Unable to walk in the rear limbs, dragging of the rear limbs. While IVDD is the most common cause of spinal injury in dogs, there are other diseases that can look very similar. French bulldogs can develop spinal tumors, meningitis, infections, malformations and others. Additionally, French bulldogs tend to get worse faster than other breeds and are more likely to develop a life-threatening complication called myelomalacia explained below. For those reasons, we tend to recommend testing a little more proactively than we do in other breeds. An experienced neurologist can examine your pet, determine where the problem is, what the severity is, list the most likely cause and recommend the best course of action. Radiographs X-rays alone cannot diagnose IVDD, although it is useful in looking for other causes such as bony tumors, broken bones or bone infections. Myelography is an older test that is not recommended since it is more invasive and complications can arise. In general, there are two ways to treat IVDD. Crate Rest and Medication The first treatment option is crate rest and medications anti-inflammatory medications, pain medications, muscle relaxants, etc. This is appropriate for dogs with mild signs pain only or mild wobbliness when they walk. Crate rest involves being confined to a small crate approximately 3 x 4 feet for the average-sized French bulldog. Time outside of the crate should be limited to short walks on a leash and harness for minutes. Surgery The second treatment option is surgery. This is appropriate for dogs that are more severely affected difficulty walking, unable to walk , dogs with severe pain, dogs where the symptoms are getting worse despite rest and medications, or dog where the symptoms improve but come back later. There are a handful of factors that determine the likelihood of success. Diagnosis The first factor is getting a diagnosis. Since many other diseases can look like IVDD, confirming a diagnosis as opposed to just suspecting based on symptoms and X-rays is the most important step in success. Severity of Symptoms The second factor is the severity of symptoms. Dogs that have mild symptoms pain only, walking but wobbly have a higher success rate than dogs that have more severe symptoms inability to feel the limbs. Treatment Option The third factor is which treatment option is selected. However, some dogs that are severely affected unable to move or unable to feel may still have some residual weakness or incoordination. The main disadvantages are the need for anesthesia and the costs associated with MRI and surgery. Unfortunately, dogs that slip one disc are at risk for slipping another one at some point in their life. At Southeast Veterinary Neurology, we perform a preventative procedure on all French bulldogs that elect surgery for their disc herniation. What is Myelomalacia? Myelomalacia is a life-threating complication of IVDD. It occurs in dogs that are unable to move and feel the rear limbs. In some dogs, when the slipped disc injures the spinal cord, it can cause a chain reaction of progressive damage to the spinal cord that creeps down the spinal cord to the tail and up the spinal cord toward the front legs. As it creeps forward, the front legs become weak and then it becomes difficult for the dog to breathe. These symptoms can happen anywhere within the first week of losing feeling in the rear limbs. French bulldogs are much more likely to develop myelomalacia than other breeds. French bulldogs are incredibly popular and are truly part of the family. Since this disease is so common and is so devastating, we want to inform as many people as possible. Southeast Veterinary Neurology employs six board-certified neurologists and a team of experts that only treat neurological conditions. These pups have a unique body shape and size that can make it difficult for them to comfortably eat and drink from traditional dog bowls. Half of her food ends up on the floor. So, I wanted to look for something with a tray or something that catches or prevents the fall-out food. Her bowl would also get tipped over on its side after she finished eating. She is wild. My criteria for the bowls this time was mainly for Fira. Fira is the complicated one. Weston also has a bit of a longer snout than Fira, making it easier for him to reach his food. So, Fira needed a bowl that would be suitable for her non-existent snout and easy for clean-up. She needed something that would stay put on the floor, help prevent regurgitating and look good in the kitchen. Here are the 9 bowls I picked up for my French Bulldogs: Hint: Scroll down to the end of this post to find my 1 choice for dog food bowl. The bowls are really shallow and wide, so it helps small-snout and squishy-face dogs get into the bowl better. These are perfect for a neat eater aka: Weston! The tray around the bowl was littered with fallen food right away. Not sure how but it ended up ripping, so we had to throw it out, but I included it on this list as a good bowl for French bulldogs. Ceramics Raised Bowl : The design of this bowl is really nice, very modern and a cool shape. I could see this really as a nice accent piece in a contemporary kitchen. Wide Ceramic Dog Bowl : Super pretty dog bowl made of solid ceramic. This bowl is super wide and is taller at the back, which I thought would work for Fira. I think it was too large and the food got stuck at the back and top edges. So maybe not the best French Bulldog food bowl for Fira. But I think if your dog eats dry food or is bigger, this dog bowl is a decent choice! Slow Feeder Bowl : if your dog eats super fast, like Fira does, a dog bowl for fast eaters is a smart option. A slow bowl is great as it forces your French Bulldog to work around the bowl and gives them time to chew and digest — and not inhale their food. It makes eating meals a bit slower for Fira. Even though I found a solution for this bowl, I found it too cumbersome and a few too many added steps for her meal time. Love the slanted feature and Fira had a much better time eating without a huge mess. Elevated bowls are really beneficial for French Bulldogs, as it helps them swallow their food down better without regurgitating it up. This tilted dog bowl also came with silicone grips to stick onto the bottom of the wooden legs — nice! Sturdy grip on the bottom, large area for their face to move around and at an elevated angle. This is my 1 choice. Stainless steel dog bowls are not only durable and easy to clean, but they also have the added benefit of being bacteria-resistant. Unlike other materials such as plastic, which can develop scratches and grooves over time that can harbor bacteria, stainless steel is non-porous and smooth. There you have it — the best bowls for French Bulldogs so far. Hope you enjoyed it! If you have any recommendations, please add them in the comments! Related Posts. Swimmers syndrome is an uncommon development in dogs or cats, also known as flat-pup syndrome or swimming-puppy syndrome. This syndrome leads to a deformation in their limbs, beginning with the hind limbs. This type of deformational development makes the legs twisted and results in the inability to stand or walk. Although smaller and dwarf breeds are more prone to the syndrome, larger breeds may also suffer from it. Breeds that are more likely to produce puppies with swimmer puppy syndrome include English and French Bulldogs, Yorkshire Terriers, Basset Hounds, and Dachshunds. In newborn pups with swimmer puppy syndrome , milk is often regurgitated. Swimmer puppies often experience difficulty with the entire digestion process; many have difficulty eliminating and develop constipation as a result. Without treatment, a swimmer puppy is also at risk of developing painful joint deformities caused by holding their legs at abnormal angles for long periods of time. It will only lie on its stomach, not on its side. Its legs, both front and back, will be splayed out. By three weeks of age, the puppy will not be able to stand or walk, and may struggle to move. When it does move, it may look like it is trying to paddle or swim. The puppy will be putting a lot of pressure on its sternum, which will contribute to the flattening of the chest and ribs. This causes swimmer syndrome puppies to have difficulty breathing and low energy levels. They will also be weak and may have problems with circulation. The puppy may also have difficulty eating. Because of the pressure on its chest, it may also struggle with keeping food down. Additionally, swimmer puppies may have sores or lesions on their bodies from lying in urine or feces. Swimmer puppies are often lethargic. By three weeks of age, the puppy will not be developing the ability to stand and walk like its littermates. Small and dwarf dog breeds are more prone to swimmer puppy syndrome that large breeds. Some veterinary experts believe that the issue is hereditary, while others point toward environments that prevent puppies from moving enough to develop their muscles properly. Others believe that swimmer puppies are born with congenital defects that occur prior to birth. Many veterinarians are willing to intervene and give the puppy a chance at having a happy, healthy life as there are quite a few treatments for swimmer puppy syndrome. Use a harness or sling to suspend the puppy for up to 20 minutes at a time, up to four times per day. This treatment is intended to strengthen muscles while taking pressure off the chest and abdomen. Every case is different; however, this is normally done gradually, for just 15 to 20 minutes per day, and only 3 to 4 times per day at first. Avoid slippery surfaces that prevent the pup from gaining traction. You can also create a soft vest for the pup to wear by cutting leg holes in an old sock and stuffing the sock with fluffy material to keep the chest elevated. Encourage the puppy to sleep on its side rather than resting on its abdomen. When you are with the puppy, help it change positions while nursing and sleeping. This gentle stimulation can help with nerve development and encourage the puppy to move its legs more, as well as to exert more force with each movement. Massage the puppy frequently, particularly after feeding. All-over massage can help stimulate muscles and nerves while aiding the digestion process. You can also encourage these movements while the puppy is suspended in a sling. Ensure that the puppy is being fed adequately, but not over-fed. Excess weight makes recovery more difficult. Keep the puppy clean. This can lead to painful lesions and cause complications with treatment. Apply a moisture barrier cream or unscented baby powder to help prevent irritation, if your vet approves. To begin with, taping should only be worn for 15 minutes at a time, times a day. While taped, you should use a sling or harness to support your puppy. Encouraging your puppy to sleep on their side as much as possible will relieve pressure on the chest. Even if they are not sleeping, repositioning is a good way to reduce complications from constant pressure on the chest. Maintaining a Healthy Weight It may sound simple, but helping your Swimmers dog to maintain a healthy weight is more beneficial than you might realize. The more extra weight your pup has to hold up, the slower their progress with therapy will be. Massaging your puppy after a feed can also help the digestive process along and help to resolve problems like constipation and gas. Failing to clean up after your Swimmers pup immediately after their accident can cause infection as well as urine burns and painful sores. Environment Scientists that studied this condition strongly suggest that appropriate flooring is extremely important, particularly non-slippery floors that prevent slippage and further injuries in puppies. Applying baby powder and wiping the dog can also help to prevent fecal scalding. Water Therapy Water therapy is recommended for Swimmer dogs that have developed a swimming reflex this happens around 6 weeks old. Keeping the pup secured, submerge them in water up to their chin. Be sure to keep hold of the puppy but let them paddle. This helps to build up muscle in the legs and can be done for short periods, two to three times a day. What is the management? Slippery floors may worsen, or in some cases, may even cause swimmer puppies. Egg crate bed liners work well. Bunch up towels and blankets and keep pup confined to a small area. Puppies should not become overweight, as this may further the weakness in the rear limbs. Most swimmers have a flattened chest from laying flat. Taping the legs in the correct position should be done asap. You will see almost immediate progress. If the pup is a chewer you will have to put a cone on while legs are taped. Swim sessions three times a day will help with building muscle. Note — the swim reflex may not develop until pups are 6 weeks or older. Submerge pup to his chin this kicks in the survival instinct to kick. Since there may be a hereditary component to this condition, dogs who were swimmer puppies would not be optimal breeding animals. Here are some key features to consider when your are buying best toys for poodles Size One of the most important factors to consider when choosing a toy for your poodle is the size. You want to make sure that the toy is appropriately sized for your dog. If the toy is too small, it could pose a choking hazard, while a toy that is too large may be difficult for your poodle to play with. Look for toys that are specifically designed for small or medium-sized dogs. Material The material of the toy is also an important consideration. Look for toys made from high-quality materials, such as rubber or nylon. Avoid toys that are made from cheap, flimsy materials that can easily break or tear. The 6 Best Types of Toys for a Poodle Overview If you think of dog toys as needing to serve as tools to meet a Poodle's needs, you may be surprised at how amazingly helpful they can be. The right toys can help a great deal with everything from teething woes, to negative behavior associated with boredom. In addition, toys can serve as a method of creating a closer bond with your Poodle, encourage activity in an otherwise sedentary dog, and even boost a Poodle's brain power. Here we will take a look at the 6 types of toys every Poodle should have to meet a wide variety of canine needs. Teething begins by 3 to 4 months old and lasts until the 7 to 8 month mark. During this time, there are incredible amounts of itching and most puppies feel some level of discomfort. This causes an overwhelming need to chew to soothe those teething woes. For these reasons, one of the best things that you can do is find the right toys for your teething Poodle puppy. Qualities of effective teething toys: The oral sensations that a puppy feels can move from moment to moment. Discomfort waxes and wanes. And itching can come in waves. So, toys need to be very versatile. The best toys will have: A variety of surface textures. Cloth, rope, and hard rubber should be available to meet chewing urges at any one particular time. Rope toys are especially helpful, as the twisted strands are good 'scratchers'. Small nubs. This is of particular importance; tiny nubs work to massage gums which helps the pup feel better. A puppy needs to be able to manipulate the toy into different parts of his mouth. Proper sizing. This is most relevant to toy Poodles, since many dog teething toys are sized too big for a tiny toy's mouth. If a Poodle puppy cannot instantly find relief, he may move onto something else.Recommended teething toys: Below are our 1 most recommended toys for Poodle pups that are in the throes of teething. The first 3 are for toy Poodles, though larger options can be found for miniatures and standards. The Nylabone is just one example of great teething chews that are flavored to entice a puppy to mouth them and come in a wide range of sizes, to accommodate all Poodle varieties. If you do not see the images, try a refresh. On mobile, you may need to turn the screen horizontal to see all 4. And if this describes your Poodle, no doubt you have had a hard time finding the right toys that will stand up to aggressive chewing. A dog's urge to chew is not limited to toys; with this type of drive, nothing is off limits. If a Poodle is not happy with his toys, one of two things will happen: 1 the dog will move on to other objects in the house, which is not only destructive but also unsafe or 2 the dog will become irritable and stressed as he's unable to satisfy his urges. Qualities of the best toys for strong chewers: To meet your Poodle's needs, the goal will be to provide fun chew toys that are specifically designed to handle aggressive chewers. While no toy is literally indestructible, some come very close. The toy will need to: Be able to stand up to high bite force. Be safe - A great feature to look for is a color indicator that the toy has been chewed down too far. Some toys are guaranteed, meaning that if a color starts to show, you'll get a free replacement. Fun - If it does not have the right texture and pliability to feel good in a Poodle's mouth, it'll be of no use. Recommended toys for Poodles that are super aggressive chewers: For this, both Kongs and Doughnuts are the two best options, with Kongs being the best for toy Poodles images are below. Kongs are great because they come in a wide range of sizes that will be appropriate for toys, minis, and standards. These are color coded, with pink and blue for puppies, red for 'normal' adult chewers, and black is reserved for the strongest chewers. In other words, a puppy would never be able to bite down on a black Kong dog toy and an aggressive chewer could tear up a pink one. The 'classic' Kong is designed to be filled with treats or kibble, which draws a dog to it and encourages him to stay focused. If your Poodle likes to chew, but has not shown a history of shredding toys to bits, you may find that the Kong 'minimally stuffed' chew toys are well received. These are also great because they come in all sizes from small to large. Goughnuts are colored coded as well, with yellow, orange, and green for strong chewers PSI and black reserved for professional grinders at a whopping PSI. What is great about these is that they are guaranteed. Each has red in the middle. If you see even a tiny spot of red, you may return the toy for just the cost of shipping out a new one. There are 3 sizes as well; but these will be a bit too large for most toy Poodles. Toys are shown below. And in this sense, thinking of toys as 'stay busy' tools can make a huge difference in your Poodle's happiness level. When a puppy or dog is just sitting around without anything to do, he will reach a limit where boredom turns into frustration. And where monotony turns into depression. If your Poodle has been too bored, you may not even realize it until you hand over a super-fun, interactive toy and see him perk up. Alternatively, some Poodles are very expressive about how they feel. It must be noted that regular exercise plays a role in this as well. If your Poodle is not taken out twice per day for at least minute sessions, even the best of toys may not fix his woes. So, a good balance of getting outside for walks and offering the right toys during down-time is the best fix. Qualities of the best toys to fix boredom and keep a Poodle occupied: You'll want toys that will be perfect for both when a Poodle is home alone and also when you are home but cannot interact with your Poodle at the moment. These toys should: Allow a Poodle to play fully independently; you will not need to do anything else other than point out the toy if you are there. Call out to the puppy or dog. A huge aspect is that the toy interacts with the dog. In this way, playing is a two-way street. The dog noses the toy, the toy responds. The dog chews the toy, the toy reacts. This type of element can keep a dog busy for a long time, basically until he's completely tuckered out. Recommended 'stay busy' toys for Poodles: There ares some incredibly fun options. The Babble Balls toys are out of this world; these are super interactive toys that can keep a puppy or dog amused and busy for hours. There are 3 sizes small for toys, medium for minis, and large for standard Poodles. Also, there are two fun types. One lets out animal noises. So, as a Poodle touches the toy, engaging sounds like pigs, frogs, bears, birds, even other dogs speak to him. There are 20 different animal sounds in all. The other is just as wonderful. It lets out funny phrases such as 'Come here, puppy! There are 20 amusing, encouraging phrases in all. For both of these, the toys automatically shut off when not in use, so the batteries do not run out. The Look Who's Taking line of toys is super fun as well. There are over 15 different types of stuffed animals, and each one makes a corresponding animal noise. These are good sized quality toys that stand up to daily playing. The size of these toys range from 5" the baby chick to 7" the cow and a bunch in between. There is a parrot, frog, rooster, monkey, goat, lobster, and more. These toys are shown below. These serve two purposes in one swoop. As an added benefit, if you place your Poodle's food in this sort of toy on days that you are not home, it helps prevent bloat, a dangerous health condition fast eating is a common trigger , which is a top concern for standard Poodles and is always something to be aware of no matter what type or size dog you have. Qualities of great treat-release toys: There are a few aspects to keep in mind. For this type of toy to do its job, it should: Hold in treats enough that they are not released too easily, but at the same time allow a Poodle to smell them in order to trigger a response. Be designed to work with a variety of different dog treats so that you are not forced to purchase additional treats. Be made with safe materials. Be durable to stand up to daily use. Be easy to clean since you'll want to be able to rinse away food particles. Be sized correctly. It's not uncommon for owners of toy Poodles to have trouble finding treat dispensing toys for their tiny dogs, so for these Poodles, it must fit the needs of dogs 10 lbs. Recommended treat dispensing toys for toy, mini and standard Poodles: There are some great options for all Poodles images below. Busy Buddy makes two treat release toys. The barnacle toy is perfect for toy Poodles, even puppies. It is composed of 3 tiny separate spheres, so toy Poodle can easily mouth onto one of them at a time. If you like the looks of this one, but don't have a toy Poodle, no worries. The other type is the twist sphere, which is adjustable, so you can control how easy or hard it is for your Poodle to get to the treats. This comes in small for dogs 8 to 20 lbs. The IQ Treat Ball is a great toy for toy Poodles on the larger end, minis and standards; this is available in both 3 and 4 inch diameters. It's a neat little sphere that is adjustable and releases food as it's nudged which encourages a dog to move. The Bob-A-Lot is a good-sized toy that is best suited for mini and standard Poodles. This has a large chamber that holds a full meal, and its bright color and wobbly movements make eating fun. Distress and even panicking when owners are away is referred to as separation anxiety, and this is not uncommon with dogs. For less squeak-focused dogs, it provides enjoyment, and the lack of internal fluff prevents mess. However, some users found the squeakers not durable enough, losing their sound after moderate usage. Provide physical exercise Play and toys are important to poodles since they serve as the gateway for these dogs to engage in physical exercise. The time your dog spends playing with its toys keeps them moving which exercises and stretches their muscles. The exercise also helps them maintain a healthy weight, and it could even boost their cardiovascular health! Help stimulate the mind We all know that Poodles are smart dogs, constantly out and about thinking of what better to do during their free time. Letting your poodle play with toys will surely keep their intelligent minds busy. If you can see your poodle behaving bothered and looking bored, try giving him an interactive puzzle toy for dogs. Boost social skills Play and toys let poodles interact with their dog owners. Often, poodles will bring toys to their owners as a way of engaging in play. This simple act also makes poodles friendlier and more playful, which makes them even more adorable! There are teething toys out there that are even recommended by vets, especially if the poodle is still a teething puppy. Playing with chew toys and teething toys will also let your poodle remove plaque and tartar in his mouth on his own. No more constant messy toothbrushing! Hence when they get bored or anxious, they typically resort to destructive behavior. But with toys available for poodles to play with their boredom, anxiety, or stress can easily be handled. Yes, Poodles do need a wide variety of toys. You see, there are some poodles, especially the young ones, who need teething toys to alleviate their teething throes. Factors in Choosing Poodle Toys Size appropriate Poodles come in three sizes; standard, miniature, and toy poodle. Chew resistant Poodles are quite the chewers, I should say. Chew-resistant toys are widely available in pet stores and even in vet clinics. They are safer since no parts will be chewed off and swallowed by your dog. Many reputable manufacturers will indicate the material they use, especially pet-safe ones. Interactive and mental stimulation It pays to consider if a toy can provide mental challenges and games that are interactive yet fun to play. When you do so, you give them the opportunity to stimulate their minds and keep them busy for hours. Products that are proven to be durable can save you more than just a few dollars, but also the potential for loose parts to come off and pose a swallowing threat. No small parts This is really important to me — making sure that the toys for poodles have no small parts. Small parts can be torn off by your poodle, which it might accidentally swallow and choke on. Budget Having a dog can surely add a huge expense to your budget, and buying toys that are way too expensive is unwise especially if your dog will only play with them a few times. That said, I would prioritize safety and quality over anything else, and if money is indeed an issue, I rather wait to get a better one. However, some toys are durable enough to last a long time before getting destroyed. How many toys should I provide for my poodle? As a general guideline, I recommend having a variety of toys to keep your poodle mentally and physically stimulated. Start with toys and observe which types of toys your poodle enjoys the most. Rotate them regularly to keep them interesting and prevent boredom. Are some materials dangerous for my poodle? Yes, there are materials that are dangerous for your poodle, such as PVC and lead, both of which are toxic to dogs when exposed too often. Choose a reputable retailer and exercise extreme caution if you DIY your own dog toy. Why do poodles destroy their toys? Standard poodles typically destroy their toys because of their natural prey drive. But miniature and toy poodles usually destroy their dogs just out of boredom or anxiety. Regular brushing and visits to the vet are still needed. Poodles are known to be friendly, well-tempered dogs, but like any breed, they can begin to develop some more negative behaviors. It is important to recognize these behaviors and redirect them into positive behaviors. Most Common Behavioral Problems Among Poodles Hyperactivity— It is normal for poodle puppies to be hyper, and they usually grow out of this in the first year or two. If this behavior in your poodle continues, make sure you are providing them plenty of exercise. If they feel like you are angry or frustrated, they might act out in a more hyper mood. Try to remain calm around your poodle to help them emulate your calm spirit. Too clingy- Make sure your poodle is allowed to explore all approved areas of your house, this way, they know where they can most comfortable. Introducing your poodle to new environments and situations will help them feel more comfortable in different circumstances. Always make sure you are giving your poodle the attention they need. Quality time throughout the day with their owner will allow your poodle to feel safe and secure when they are left alone. Nipping- Poodles are not naturally aggressive, and all dogs nip a little in the puppy phase as they learn to play. If this action continues into adulthood, it is vital to train and teach your poodle that this behavior is not okay. Poodles respond best to positive encouragement. Marking territory If your poodle is marking their territory, they might be trying to assert their dominance in the household, leave a mating signal, be having a response to visitors, or it might even be a response to a new family member. It is crucial in this situation to establish yourself as the head of the family with your poodle. Let them know that you are the leader. You can do this by having them sit first before you give them their food or treats. Having them sit before you enter or leave a room is also helpful in letting them know you are in charge. Another way to help them stop marking is to get them spayed or neutered. It would help if you also cleaned your home with an enzyme cleaner. Soap and water will not get rid of the smell entirely and your poodle will continue to mark when they smell it. Growling- growling is different from barking and is something an owner needs to be aware of right away. Finding the reason for the growling is important—is your poodle in pain, scared, marking their territory, or being aggressive? It is important to identify the trigger so you can help change the situation. If your poodle has begun to grow aggressively, proper training right away is vital to stop the behavior before your poodle thinks that it is acceptable to behave like that. Jumping- It is common for poodles to jump up when they are saying hello or excited to see someone. If you have a bigger poodle, this could potentially cause a problem or even frighten your guests. It is also important to make sure you are helping your poodle release their extra energy in other ways, like walks throughout the day. Disobedience- Poodles are a highly intelligent breed. They are great problem solvers and good at learning commands. Poodle owners must train their poodles with commands and rules. If you find that your poodle is continually disobeying you, it is important to understand what might be triggering them. Poodles are emotional dogs, they might be frightened or lonely, and that could be causing some of their disobedience. Understanding why they might be disobeying will help you find the right steps to take to get them back on track. Here is why: Walking is low impact and easy on their joints and muscles. All you need is a leash and harness. Puppy Poodles-The The duration of your walks or the amount of time you exercise your poodle depends on its size and type. For toy and miniature poodles, it is important not to over-exercise them as puppies. This can affect bone growth. Keeping walks shorter and at a slower pace for these small puppies is important Adults Poodles-As your poodle reaches adulthood, you can increase your walk time and pace. Most adult poodles need about 60 minutes of walk time a day, and it is best if this is done in two 30 minute sessions or three 20 minute ones. Senior Poodles-Even as your poodle reaches his or her senior years, it is vital to keep up their walking routine. Fresh air is known to help their moods. Just make sure to decrease the duration and pace of your walks. Walking Poodles in Different Weather Conditions Whether it is hot or cold outside, weather can affect your desire or ability to walk your poodle. Try morning and cooler evening walks. Always bring water and take a water break in the shade. Protect their nose with sunscreen. In the summer, swimming is another excellent exercise for your poodle. They are great swimmers, and it is an excellent low-impact activity. Make sure you wash their coat off with shampoo afterward, and if you are in an area with deeper water, a doggie life vest is always a safe option. Cold Weather Again, protect those paws. Paw wax or no-slip paw show to keep those paws warm Dress you and your poodle appropriately. A vest or sweater can help keep your poodle warm during those colder winter walks. Protect their noses from getting chapped with a nose butter. If it is just too cold to go outside, make sure to play and give your poodle plenty of playtime in the house. Playing fetch and letting them run a little more in the house will help them get out their energy. Best Treat Toys for Poodles Poodles love treats, and treats can be a useful training tool. View our accreditations descriptions Good morning Bryce and Gina, I want to let you know how the chocolate chunk has been doing and send an updated picture! Moose is also excellent at sitting on command. Hope all is well with you and your family! Emily T. From the start you all were very caring and informative. You have prepared us well for our long journey ahead with our baby boy Oakley A. A Tucker. I want to thank you for always being there to answer all my questions and the pictures you would send our way, it always brought a smile to my face. It has been 3 days since my children A. It was worth a million to see there reactions and smiles, Oakley greeted them all happy and with so much love. On our drive back we actually were afraid we left him in San Antonio lol not once did he make a sound. He gives us so much love that its so easy to give it back. He only has had 2 accidents since arriving both our faults, and he has slept through out the whole night after the first day. The first day he just woke us up twice to go potty but went back to sleep. At the vet he got checked and they said he was perfect and amazing. They were so in love with him. The vet said he was so well taken care of and it showed, we did credit it all to welcome home labs. Today he started his obedience training lessons at home and the trainer was amazed to see such a well tempered labrador. She was actually speechless as she saw how well he obeyed commands already. So thank you again for giving us our newest family addition and we only hope we can give him as much love as you have given him and that he deserves. We will keep in touch. Thank you, Angel, Jolyn, A. This is a dream come true. I have always loved labs. I have done my research on the breed and I knew what I wanted. Welcome Home Labs has fulfilled that and then some. From the first day, it has been a pleasure getting to know you. You took the time to match me with a puppy that would fit with what I was looking for. You gave me an option. I promise to take good care of Monroe. She is already loved. I know she will be an awesome addition to my family. She will have a big fall with a few planned hunting trips for grouse at the shack, then Iowa for a pheasant hunt, and ending the fall with a duck hunt. These will be short trips, just to get her started. Aside from hunting, she is going to join Karney in being a family pet. I have a feeling my bed is going to get very crowded this year. I will send pictures to update you on her progress. I would recommend your kennel to anyone looking for a good experience and a beautiful Lab. Please, enjoy these cookies. A big thank you to your kids for loving on my little girl. I will let you know when we get back to International Falls.

The study indicates the health of these dogs has strayed substantially from non-French Bulldogs in the UK and is now largely much poorer. Urgent intervention is now required to reduce the high rate of health issues currently seen in the breed. Compiling a list of the 43 most common disorders across both groups of dogs, the findings revealed many of the differences in health between the two groups were closely associated with the extreme body shape that defines French Bulldogs. However, this demand has resulted in huge welfare issues, particularly with reference to breathing problems and sore eyes that are common in the breed. However, despite wide acceptance of the health issues in the breed, there has been limited reliable evidence, until now, on just how poor the general health of French Bulldogs really is. The findings of the new study revealed that French Bulldogs had a higher risk of 20 out of the 43 .Narrowed nostrils stenotic nares was the disorder with highest risk in French Bulldogs, with the breed more than 42 times more likely to have the condition, helping explain the high frequency of breathing problems they experience. These results support general agreement by leading academics, kennel clubs, veterinary organisations and welfare bodies that the typical body shape of French Bulldogs must be shifted towards a more moderate, and less extreme, make-up, in order to reduce these health issues. Humans need to accept that the needs of dogs for good health, welfare and temperament overrides any humans wishes for cute or internet-popular breeds with compromised health. Every dog should expect to live a life without hugely increased health risks related to extreme conformation. But sadly, this study helps us to grasp the full extent of the serious health issues affecting these dogs. Especially in the lead-up to Christmas, we should give dogs a special present by putting the needs of the dog before the desires of the human. We aim to curb the increasing numbers of rogue breeders from filling the demand for these dogs — including some imported from overseas — with no regard for health and welfare. We urge would-be owners and breeders to think carefully about any breeding or buying decisions when it comes to French Bulldogs, and make use of health testing, evidence-based resources and expert advice. BOAS - do you know what it means for your dog? Although several brachcephalic breeds, such as the Bulldog, were initially selected for use in fighting, today they are more commonly seen as a popular companion animal. This may be explained by the fact that a short nose makes a dog look more human-like, with large, round, wide set eyes and rounded faces thought to be instinctively attractive to humans. These juvenile facial features are a form of paedomorphism, whereby juvenile morphological features are retained in adult animals; which in the case of the dog has been driven by artificial selection for these traits in closed breeding populations. Selection for a brachycephalic head shape to satisfy our human preferences has come at a cost for the dogs concerned who can suffer from restricted breathing. The signs of this are shortness of breath, snoring, wheezing, gagging, regurgitation, and exercise intolerance. BOAS may not be fully evident in young puppies, but clear signs may be seen as the puppies develop into adult dogs. Anatomical abnormalities seen in many of these breeds are believed to be directly related to their skull conformation shape. This happens because the soft tissue in the mouth and larynx is crammed into the reduced skeletal space. The soft tissue partially blocks the larynx and restricts the passage of air. In addition, the nostrils of brachycephalic dogs are narrowed stenotic nares due to lack of development. These abnormalities encourage complete collapse of the airways laryngeal collapse. Clinical signs are often progressive, with dogs often deteriorating over time. Prognosis also worsens with time, as the later stages of laryngeal collapse are very difficult to surgically improve — in some cases necessitating permanent tracheostomy. The dog is struggling to breathe and therefore cannot enjoy some of the ordinary doggy pleasures such as play or healthy walks. They struggle to effectively cool down and often seek cool surfaces to lie on. They will also adopt a splayed-out, stretched neck posture to aid them in cooling and breathing. Dogs are unable to sweat but pant instead to cool down. Normal dogs have a large surface area within the nose, which contains an array of delicate turbinates. In brachycephalic dogs, however, the nasal conchae are too small and air can barely pass through them. This results in severely impaired thermoregulation. For this reason, brachycephalic dogs are particularly sensitive to warm temperatures and often require many hours to recover from exercise. Diagnosis of BOAS by physical examination requires an anaesthetic and then surgical resection of the soft palate and reshaping of the nostrils. Anaesthesia itself is high risk in brachycephalic breeds and these procedures are invasive and expensive. It is important that informed decisions are made when choosing a breed and encouragement given to select a dog based on health rather than appearance. Consider this before choosing a brachycephalic dog: BOAS has potentially severe welfare implications for large numbers of dogs. It will do so generation after generation unless dogs selected for breeding have less extreme physical features. The effects can be of long duration, affecting a dog throughout its life. Potential dog owners who choose a brachycephalic breed are contributing to this welfare problem. Potential dog owners who insist on a less extreme type of conformation for their pet will be helping to restore a dog breed to its earlier type. PD Arnie was recovered from grim conditions during an operation in East Suffolk and signed over to the force by his owner. The dogs have both been with their puppy walkers for over a year, and living with their handlers for around three weeks. It was also an opportunity for all those involved in their careers to meet up and for other dogs going through the programme to be socialised. He was assessed and the rest is history. He is a little bit of the star of the show so it is nice to have been a part of that. She said it was hard to let him go but that he was a good-natured, lovely dog. PC Wells said PD Boris had really come on in the last six months and that his success was a reminder to never write a dog off too early. Many people devoted many extra and volunteer hours to the animals and their crucial role in keeping the two counties safe, for which he was grateful, he said.

Being responsible breeders of these fabulous dogs, we strive to keep the breed healthy with select breeding. Much research and planning goes into play before each litter of puppies. Our puppies are raised with our family and get socialized on a daily basis. We offer limited registration and all our puppies come with a puppy pack. Happy, Healthy Bloodline When choosing a good dog, you want to find breeders who breed for good health and temperament and have great lines, not breeders breeding mainly for money and looks, or those making false claims just to attract buyers. Their temperament, gentle nature and intelligent personality makes them the perfect companion for families with small kids or those that just need a good friend to snuggle with. A Furever Friend Since every puppy has its own character, we like to see how each puppy mingles with its new owners when choosing their forever friend. We make it our priority that the puppy you choose will be the best fit for your family. After years of selective breeding, these lighter specimens were given the name "English light golden retrievers. The color of the coat has nothing to do with a dog's health. But ancestry could possibly have an effect on health. There is at least a little evidence that, on average, English bloodlines are healthier. Research also found that goldens from English bloodlines had an average lifespan of 12 - 14 years whereas American goldens lived for an average of 10 - 12 years. Putting statistics to the side, it's our priority to ensure our puppies will live a happy and healthy life. Do English Retrievers Shed Less? Because English retrievers have less hair, you will notice less hair around the house, but this does not mean that they shed less compared to their American counterparts. All retrievers shed at the same rate and usually shed the most during spring and fall. Breeders VS. The sad truth is that many pet store purchased pups actually come from puppy mills. Basically, there is zero authenticity with pet stores. When it comes to adopting any animal from a pet store, there is an increased risk of unforeseen health or genetic problems. You also cultivate a life-long relationship with the breeder, meaning support is available to you anytime you may need it. With My Golden Retriever Puppies , you have the option to come and visit both the puppy and the breeder in person! Golden Retrievers are an adaptable breed, meaning they are better at adapting to seasonal changes and various types of climate than certain other breeds. Goldens sport a double-coat, which ensures that these sweet pups are able to tolerate slightly colder temperatures than their friends from other breeds. Your pup deserves better than that, which is why here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we ensure high-quality care is taken of your pet at all times. We even have all types of golden retrievers for sale! At My Golden Retriever Puppies, we pride ourselves on our golden retriever price being fair and affordable for high quality puppies. Here at My Golden Retriever Puppies , we value family and authenticity, which is why we always guarantee our pups through our 2-year genetic health guarantee. Like adopting a Golden Retriever from a pet store, there is an increased risk when adopting a pup from a rescue center or shelter as well. For example, pups purchased through a shelter or rescue center are far less likely to come with the kinds of health guarantees and reassurances that a breeder can provide. All puppies come with a 2 year health guarantee against these illnesses. All our dogs are thoroughly health tested by the age of one for at least hereditary defects and diseases, as well as congenital defects such as hip dysplasia, and cardiac health. We are located in Pine Bush, NY. We are a family run operation. My husband Michael, my mother Julie, and myself give all we can give to our dogs and the raising of these puppies. Julie is an especially huge part of my life, and my dogs lives today. She started breeding Dobermans in .In the late 90's when I was a child we were gifted two Silky Terriers by my father, after the loss of my first dog, Shadow - a field spaniel. Like we are today, we have always been at-home breeders. It was a wonderful experience. With the guidance of our vet, we helped whelp birth , and socialize all of their puppies, and placed them into happy homes - many of whom were our neighbors, family and friends. Sparky, the last of our silky's from our first litter, passed away in at the ripe old age of 19!! We are so thankful for their long lives and good health, which we credit to their diet of mostly steamed or roasted chicken, good breeding practices, and happy home life. We researched many breeds, but kept coming back to the Mini Goldendoodle. That's when we found our Lola, and fell in love with Goldendoodles. They are smart, loving, low to non-shedding, playful and very good with children. Today, my mother and I combine our years of experience of raising and training dogs in our Goldendoodle program. We have a unique understanding of developing healthy packs thanks to our years of breeding the Silkys. If you are considering getting a second dog, we can help you select the right fit for not only you, but for your current pooch. Pack dymanics should always be taken into consideration. Lola is an F1B petite Goldendoodle - to be technical. You can read about our mom's and dad's under the "Parents" tab at the top of this page. Use the link below to view our upcoming litters page. As I type this she just climbed up to sit in my lap and fell immediately to sleep. We only wish she came into our lives sooner! Every day we marvel at how quickly she learns and matures. She is totally my shadow — following me around the apartment from morning to night and jumping with absolute joy when my husband gets home from work at the end of the day. It's hard to have a bad day when Rooster is around. Thanks for everything! She is happy all the time. We love and have raised Golden Retrievers for the past 27 years but wanted a smaller, golden-type dog with less shedding. Winnie is everything we were looking for in a dog - smart, adorable personality, 30 lbs, loving, easily trained and so friendly to people. She gets compliments wherever we go. It was a pleasure working with you Janelle. Thank you for Winnie - she is a wonderful addition to our family. We highly recommend Bella Mini Doodles and already have several times. Justin Chapman Feb From day 1 Penny has been an absolute joy! It ended up being quite the opposite! Kara Gauvin Jan We decided to get 2 mini golden doodles, a brother and sister - Cab and Margaux! Janelle was so helpful in the process, answering our numerous questions right up until pick up day : These 2 puppies have essentially been our "therapy dogs" and have brought so much fun and enjoyment into our lives! Thank you so much! We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. Lives best in warm weather and cannot thrive in extreme hot or cold. Temperament The Pug Pomeranian mix is a loving family dog emerging as a perfect companion, owing to its affectionate and charming personality. Having a calm disposition, they are extremely loyal towards their owners, always eager to please them. These well-mannered dogs mingle well with children as well as other pets. Having a very versatile personality, they are playful on one hand and at the same time have show a relaxed attitude. These small-sized dogs might inherit the alert nature of their parents and alarm their owner at the sight of an intruder. Care Exercise The Pug and Pomeranian mixes are playful and active loving to run around the house or an open space, thus requiring moderate amount of exercise daily. However, they do well in apartment life since they like to laze around and relax. Grooming This low maintenance breed are easy to manage, not requiring to be groomed much. Being moderate shedders, brushing two to three times in a week would help in keeping their coats soft and clean. Other grooming needs include keeping their eyes and ears clean, taking care of their dental health as well as bathing them when necessary. Health Problems The Pomeranian and Pug mix breeds are generally healthy with no known genetic issues. Though they have a short muzzle just as their Pug parents, they still are not too prone to respiratory disorders. Besides seasonal allergies they might suffer from dry skin during fall and even winters. Training These intelligent dogs would not be a hazard to train as they may pick up lessons easily because of their willingness and urge of making their masters happy. You can crate train your Pomeranian Pug mix puppies as they are extremely close to their owners and might be prone to separation anxiety like their parents when left alone. Crate training would even make housebreaking easier. Try throwing his favorite toys inside the crate along with delicious treats so that he finds everything familiar inside and is willing to spend more time there. Once your dog has a good knowledge of commands, teach it how to go to a certain place like his play mat. Engage it with interesting activities so that it may be willing to sit there unless you ask it to get up. These affectionate dogs can be taught how to plant a kiss on your cheeks without salivating much or licking you. Put your cheek in front and wait for your pet touch it with its nose. Pull yourself away so that he does not get a chance to lick you, give him a treat to reward his endeavor. However, if your dog is into the habit of nipping, this activity is not recommended, particularly for children. Feeding Give them half to one cup of dry dog food daily along with a diet containing vitamins and other nutrients. However, as they have a tendency of over eating make sure you keep a proper check on their diet. Their looks can range from just slightly darker than a regular Pomeranian all the way to just slightly furrier than a regular Pug including all the adorable possibilities in between. They make a great family dog and, for those with no family, a cuddly companion. If these adorable balls of fur intrigue you trust us, if you are a fan of cute, Pom-a-Pugs will intrigue you then read on to learn more. Some versions of this mix come out looking no more different from a Pug, except for being furrier, or a Pomeranian, except for their darker color. However, there are some unique looks among the middle range. On average, a Pom-a-Pug will keep the long, thick fur, small size, and facial construction of their Pomeranian ancestors. These features are mixed with the squished face and darker coloring of their Pug ancestors. Getting down to specifics, the average Pom-a-Pug weighs between five and sixteen pounds and will measure eight to thirteen inches tall. Their coat will be short or medium-length and smooth to semi-course to the touch. However, the Pug side of their ancestry has suffered from health problems, from weight to breathing problems, which can shorten their lifespan. When taking both sides of their health history into account, we can see that the Pom-a-Pug will enjoy a medium-length lifespan at worst and a long one at best. You can expect your mix to live between eight and fifteen years. As mentioned before, their coat can range from short to medium-length and soft to semi-course feel. At the very least, we recommend you give your Pom-a-Pug a thorough brushing once per week. When bathing them, be sure to use shampoo meant especially for dogs free from harsh chemicals. Temperament The temperament of a Pom-a-Pug is perfectly suited to be an affectionate family dog or an energetic and cuddly companion dog. They often display a calm demeanor and a loyal and obedient attitude, always eager to please their owner. As a bonus, Pom-a-Pugs often have keen senses and a sharp alertness of their surroundings. They can act as guard dogs by warning their owners to abnormalities before they become dangers. Exercise Needs Pom-a-Pugs are energetic breeds and can turn rambunctious when not given the proper amount of exercise. A typical day would require you to take your mix for a moderately long walk to drain their energy stores. In terms of living space, Pomeranian-Pug Mixes require a medium-sized area to play and run around indoors. This does not mean, though, that they cannot do well in apartments. If they have had their walk appetite quenched, they are more than happy to laze around a small apartment all day. To keep your Pom-a-Pug mentally stimulated, we recommend you engage them in playful activity for at least thirty minutes each day. This can offer some bonding time as well and make your pet even more eager to please you. Health Risks As cute as they are, Pug-Pomeranian mixes are not free from health risks. There are several important health risks to watch out for that are common in this breed. When their leg is fully flexed, the kneecap can become out of place, causing pain and discomfort. Keratoconjunctivitis Sicca Dry Eye is, as the name suggests, a severe dryness in the eye. This can also cause redness, itchiness, irritation, and blurry vision for your dog. Pom-a-Pugs can also suffer from other minor diseases and injuries, but they are not as common as the above ailments. If you suspect your mix has these or any other illnesses or injuries, be sure to consult your veterinarian immediately. Feeding Your Pomeranian-Pug mix will be more than okay eating a bag of dry dog food tailored to small dogs. They will eat a cup of this dry food per day. Be sure to not feed them table food as their digestive system may not handle it. You can break the one cup of dry dog food up into different meals throughout the day, at your discretion. If your pet likes a morning and evening meal, go with two. If they like eating more often, go with breakfast, lunch, and dinner installments. Are Pug Pomeranian Mixes Protective? Despite their small size, some weighing as little as three pounds on the very light side, Pom-a-Pugs can be fairly effective guard dogs. Their alertness can help them warn their owner to anything out of the ordinary far in advance. Do not depend on your Pom-a-Pug to scare off any potential intruders, though. Mix that with strong loyalty to their owner and you will get a protective dog, even if the worse they can do is annoy someone away with their yipping. Being a designer breed, the Pom-a-Pug can come with a hefty price tag attached. That being said, there is a significant price range breeders sell these mixes at. As with any responsibility in life, the costs do not end there. Much like many important questions in life, only you know the perfect answer to this question. However, we can give you some tips to help make the deciding process easier. If you are in the market for a smaller-sized dog that is loyal, friendly, and compatible with families or as a companion dog and are not shy of the potentially high price tag, then the Pom-a-Pug is a great choice for you. Any climate in the U. The Attention a Pug Pomeranian Mix Needs Besides their exercise needs a moderately long walk each day , Pom-a-Pugs also need social interaction and play to keep them mentally stimulated and help them bond with their owners and family. For at least thirty minutes per day, engage with your pet. Whether that engagement is playing games and activities with them or petting them as you sit on the couch is up to you. Either extreme will help you and your Pom-a-Pug grow closer and develop trust. Compatibility with Kids Pom-a-Pugs can be patient and affectionate pets. This makes them a great complement to children. This breed will be able and more than happy to play games with your kids while avoiding unnecessary aggression. Their guard dog alertness is a great layer of protection. They will look after your children like one of their own and warn of any potential dangers to them well in advance. Compatibility with Other Animals Pom-a-Pugs are highly compatible with other pets, dogs and cats alike. Especially if they are raised with the other animal, they can form close bonds with them. You Might Also Like:. Lifespan Sociability Beware when going to view a litter of Pom-a-Pug puppies, as you are almost certainly going to bring one home. These gorgeous little pups are irresistible, and even just one may not be enough! Pomeranians used to be bigger. It may be hard to believe, but these little pint-sized pooches are originally descended from large, Spitz-type sleigh dogs. They were originally bred as sheep-herding dogs and used for sledding, but they became popular among royals in the 18th Century. Queen Victoria is often credited with the creation of the modern Pomeranian, as she is said to have owned a particularly small Pom, and consequently, this made them much sought after. The Queen is not the only famous Pomeranian owner, as they are known to have been the loyal companions of Michelangelo, Martin Luther King, and Mozart. Pom-A-Pugs are bred for companionship. Pugs were first bred almost 2, years ago, purely as companions. They have been loyal, loving, and devoted companions to humans ever since. A Pug is happiest on the lap of their owner. Although larger Pomeranians were first bred as working dogs, the pocket-sized modern Pom was bred as a loyal companion to the Queen. The combination of these two dogs is sure to result in the ultimate companion breed! Pugs have ancient roots. The Pug lineage stretches as far back as BCE, and most believe that they were first bred in ancient China or Tibet, where they were kept as loyal pets by Buddhist monks. Chinese Emperors kept Pugs as lapdogs, and they were consequently treated like royalty, with some sources claiming that they had their own miniature palaces and even personal guards. They can be rather protective of their owners and may take a while to warm up to strangers. Due to their heritage of companionship, they tend to become attached to one person and may act skittish around new faces. They have a strong desire to please, and despite their strong companionship instincts, they can exhibit independent natures at times. As long as their owner is within sight, they will enjoy going about their own business in the yard, sniffing out strange scents. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They love kids and are known to perform endless tricks to get their attention. Their tiny stature and incredible acceleration abilities will keep the family playing for hours, both indoors and in the backyard. Although these dogs love to run around in the open, they are highly adaptable animals that make great pets for apartment living or families with small back yards. The fierce loyalty and devotion to their role of dedicated companion may cause them to display assertive aggression at times, although these dogs have a bark that is infinitely bigger than their bite, and this usually leads nowhere. That said, they will occasionally pick fights with bigger dogs due to their larger-than-life personalities and will often get more than they bargained for. This is why they need to be well trained from an early age —not because they are inherently aggressive, but because they are extremely loyal and protective. Temperament Affectionate, friendly, loving, playful, and good with children. Pug mixed with Pomeranian makes one small dog, so you can expect a relatively light dog easy to carry around. Its ears may either be erect if it takes on the Pomeranian side and Floppy if the Pug side. The color can be unpredictable, and you can expect to either have a pure black or tan dog or sometimes a combination of both. Moreover, since Pomeranians are fluffy dogs, you can expect your dog to look like a pug but with a fluffy coat. Most of the time, however, you can expect the right combination of features of both dogs. Just make sure, however, to give them regular brushing to prevent fur tangling. The most important thing you need to know about Pug mixed with Pomeranian is their personality. Overall, their temperament is a great asset for the breed, as they can get along with almost anyone without any problem. They are incredibly loyal and affectionate, but can sometimes be stubborn and mischievous too. Pomeranian and Pug Cross Puppies for Sale The essential step in buying your puppy is choosing who to buy from. You want to make sure you buy from a reputable breeder, who employs ethical practices and has a standard. You can begin your journey by doing short research or getting recommendations from your friends, on where to get your forever companion. Are they a registered breeder? Health conditions of the existing animals in the area. Ask to look at the parents of the puppies. The health of your pups also depends on the health of its parents. Make sure they seem happy, healthy, friendly, and clean. The unfortunate reality of breeders is sometimes they keep breeding puppies without full regard with the condition of the parent dog, especially the mother. Ask for their health screening on all dogs. A good breeder will, at all times, have their dog parents and puppies regularly checked for any health conditions. How many dogs they have for sale? Are you buying from a breeder who runs a puppy mill, because as much as possible you want to avoid buying from those places? The breed is easy to manage, and it includes essential grooming responsibilities such as: Brush their coat at least two or three times a week to make their skins look shiny and beautiful. You want to avoid their fur from getting tangled, especially if they take on the coat of Pomeranians. Keep their eyes and ears clean. Using a soft towel, wipe any debris or discharge around their eyes, to prevent health complications from arising. Brush their teeth regularly to prevent plaque from accumulating and tooth decay. Give them regular baths, as necessary. Doing this prevents ticks from hiding within its coat. The Pomeranian and Pug cross is easy to manage, and you only need to be reminded of these important details for their grooming: Dedicate time to regularly brush their coat, using a metal-pin slicker brush, to help detangle their coat. Bathe them regularly, especially during the allergy seasons of the Pomeranian crossed with a pug. Make sure to use products which are gentle on the skin. Clip their nails, especially since the Pug mixed with Pomeranian are hyper and playful dogs. You want to avoid any situation of being unnecessarily cut. However, there may be some instance when they suffer from seasonal allergies and dry skin, which can nevertheless be treated. However, there are some health problems common to small dogs, such as the Pug and Pomeranian Cross which you need to watch out for. Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome — this is a condition which affects the upper airways of dogs, common in most flat faced and short-nosed dogs. This may be present in your Pomeranian mixed with a Pug if the dominant gene your pup will have is that of the Pugs. If you notice your dog becoming lethargic, or tremoring in the face, then they may be having an attack. Some causes include being obese, or too much exposure to smoke and dust. Whelping complications — this occurs among female dogs who experience giving birth. Since their pelvic opening is narrow and limited, giving birth can be limited. Here are also some health problems which may be particular to the Pomeranian Pug Mix: Dry Skin — this can be caused by allergies, parasites, or other medical disorders. For this specific kind of breed, its source should come from allergies. Left untreated, the skin condition worsens to atopic dermatitis and lead to secondary skin infections. Symptoms — the symptoms are easy to identify such as itchiness, flaking, scabs, and hair loss. Prevention — feed them with high quality and balanced diet, and groom them regularly to prevent any buildup of debris and dirt. Eye Infections — Some allergies can cause eye discharge, which is results in mucus-like substances forming around the eye and getting in the eye. If your pup takes on the eye of Pugs, you have to be particularly careful with their eyes, as it often protrudes from its face. Be mindful, however, that they still need to receive their daily nutritional requirements.

By Chris Poodles have been considered a fashionable dog ever since their popularity skyrocketed in France in the 17th century. Colors officially recognized now include black, white, blue, cream, gray, silver, red, apricot, silver beige, and all shades of brown, including caf-au-lait. Apricot vs Red Poodles — Are they different? Red vs. Apricot Poodles Red and Apricot Poodles are two of the rarest and most sought-after colors of Poodles. Because both red and apricot coloring can vary in hue, the two colors can be difficult to discern at times. Red and Apricot are the two newest Poodle colors. Because Poodles come in so many different colors, many of which are known to fade over time, it can be hard to know what to expect after you find a puppy. A Red Poodle and an Apricot Poodle resting while tongues are out. The apricot color is caused by a recessive gene, making Apricot Poodles very rare. Most Poodles were black, white, or particolored until this point. The apricot color quickly grew in popularity and was bred mainly in the UK. An Apricot Poodles — what a pretty coat color! Because it is so rare, the darker Red Poodles are very desirable. However, red coats are prone to fading, and most Red Poodles will end up with a coat that resembles the apricot color by the time they are about three years old. Because of this history, the first Red Standard Poodles tended to be smaller than other colors of Poodles. However, the largest resulting Red Poodles were bred, and Red Poodles are now very similar in size to Poodles of different colors. Some say that it must be the same gene because the Red Poodle originated from Apricot Poodles. Despite their genes being different, the appearances of Red Poodles and Apricot Poodles can end up being very similar. Apricot and Red Poodles sitting together on a white background. An Amazing Dog Regardless of Color Regardless of whether a Poodle is red, apricot, or any other color, the coloring of your Poodle will not be a factor in its personality or temperament. Poodles are highly intelligent, easily trainable, and very social. Any color Poodle from a reputable breeder that receives appropriate training and care can be an incredible companion. If you have your heart set on a Red Poodle, a chance remains that your Poodle could maintain dark red coloring into adulthood. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. Apricot Poodles March 14, Apricot Poodles are one of the most popular Poodle colors. Apricot appears in all three sizes of Poodles: Standard, Miniature and Toy. The beautiful shade as well as the rarity of this color makes apricot Poodles highly sought-after. Today we will look at this type of Poodle as its characteristics. Even AKC Poodle breeders sometimes categorize their dogs under the wrong color. Apricot is a dilution of brown. Ideally it should appear to be a bright, sunny color. Apricot is difficult to breed for as it is a recessive gene and it quickly fades in UV light. If your Poodle spends a lot of time outside, his apricot color will soon look like a lighter cream color. The nose and eye rims of an apricot Poodle should ideally be black or dark brown. A medium-colored brown is accepted as per the breed standard, but not encouraged. History of apricot-colored Poodles Poodles have been around for a long time. Some paintings show Poodles in the 15th and 16th century. Back then, most Poodles would have been white or parti-colored. The new color quickly became popular and was bred mainly in the UK. It would take a while before the color became prevalent in the other Poodle varieties though: Only in , the first apricot Miniature Poodle was born. In the s, Poodles became more and more popular in North America and have been a beloved companion dog ever since. Due to the rarity of the apricot color and its recessive nature, not a lot of Poodles are available in this color! Are apricot Poodles rare? Yes — apricot Poodles are very rare! As a recessive color, apricot is only shown in a puppy if both parents carry a copy of the gene. Most Poodles are black or white with the occasional Parti Poodle who has two colors. Other Poodle colors such as red, cream, blue or brown are allowed by the breed standard but less common. The apricot Poodle is very rare among the Poodle colors, which makes these dogs very sought-after and potentially pricey. Some puppy buyers have to be on a waitlist for an apricot puppy for months or years. You should only decide for these dogs if you are willing to be patient and wait for your perfect apricot puppy for a long time. As all Poodles, apricot Poodles have a tendency to develop gastrointestinal issues. You should only feed your dog high-quality food and make sure that you take him to the vet if he shows any signs of diarrhea or vomiting. Like all Poodles, apricot Poodles are highly intelligent and will require daily exercise and training. A bored and under-exercised Poodle will quickly develop a range of unwanted behaviors, such as reactivity, incessant barking or chewing of furniture. Grooming your apricot Poodle Every color Poodle will require regular, consistent grooming efforts in order to keep the coat beautiful and the skin healthy. Letting your Poodle develop mats will lead to hot spots and can even cause severe skin infections. You need to brush your Poodle every day. He should also be bathed with a Poodle-specific shampoo about once a month. Many Poodle owners choose to have this done by a professional groomer. Depending on whether you want to show your Poodle or not, you can keep his coat either in a full show groom or a more convenient haircut. The teddy bear cut is very popular especially for Miniature Poodles. Training Poodles are generally easy to train as they are highly intelligent and love to work together with their owner. They excel at a variety of dog sports, such as agility, competition obedience, disc dog or dock diving. Especially for those dogs, participating in a weekly dog sport will be very beneficial. If you choose to show your dog in AKC conformation events, you will need to train them to show well in the show ring. This includes walking and trotting on the leash and standing still while the judge examines your dog. The most common behavioral problems in apricot Poodles are anxiety, nervousness and excessive barking. Extensive socialization is necessary to turn them into well-mannered and calm companions. This includes positive exposure to people, dogs, different places and a variety of sounds. Poodles can show prey drive. Do not underestimate that and make sure to teach your dog impulse control and recall skills. This is especially important if your Poodle is sharing your home with smaller animals, such as cats. How much do apricot Poodles cost? As a rare color, you can expect to pay more for an apricot Poodle of either size. The Bottom Line Apricot Poodles are very popular due to their unusual coloring and their rarity. Many owners are drawn to this special kind of Poodle because they are so unique. It is important to not let rarity alone be a deciding factor when it comes to picking your future puppy though! You should never buy any dog Poodle or not for his color alone. Apricot Poodles will require the same care, grooming, training and exercise as any other kind of Poodle. Due to the at times nervous nature of this breed, it is really important that they are well-socialized and get a lot of positive exposure, especially during their puppyhood. Apricot Poodles excel at a variety of dog sports and will love to participate in those with their owner! Due to the limited supply of apricot Poodles, expect to be put on a waitlist for a potential puppy. The price will likely be higher than that for a more common Poodle color as well. Being patient pays off though: These dogs are amazing companions that will brighten up every day! Unleash the real potential of your companion! We will email you daily with training tips, ideas and videos. This is an introductory course into our training philosophy. You will get customized video lessons based on your training goals — and you can implement them in just 5 minutes a day. The apricot patches are usually located on their ears, around their eyes and on their backs. The apricot patches are very light in color and are somewhere between a light red and a cream with peachy undertones. If these changes occur, it will be within the first two years of their lives which will make them look like a cream and white Poodle. Light Apricot Poodle Light Apricot Poodles have a coat that is almost cream in color with peachy undertones. Phantom Poodles have a coat with a solid background and a secondary color in patches in very specific locations. These locations include the chin, throat, chest, legs, beneath their tail, above their eyes or on the sides of their muzzle. In this case the solid background is black and the secondary color is apricot. Apricot Sable Poodle Sable Poodles have hairs that are black-tipped with roots in a lighter solid color, specifically apricot. The sable hairs cover most of their body and they usually have a white patches on their chest, muzzle and paws. The black tips of the sable hairs are usually most prominent on the end of their ears and on the top of their heads. Apricot Poodle With White Chest Some Apricot Poodles are not fully apricot in color but rather feature white patches on their chest, paws, chin and top of their muzzle. That being said, Apricot Poodles with white chests are not as common as fully Apricot Poodles. You are more likely to find apricot and white coats in Poodle mix breeds like Maltipoos and Cavapoos.

If you already have a pet at home especially one that is smaller than a German Shepherd , you might want to think twice before bringing a German Shepherd puppy home. Moreover, make sure you keep your German Shepherd away from animals like cats, rabbits, hares, birds, etc. If you are allergic to dog hair, German Shepherd is definitely not the right pet option for you. Twice a year, you can expect your pet to blow its coat, filling your entire home with dog hair. The best way to control the hair in your house is to groom your German Shepherd regularly. They carry their natural instinct of darting toward and capturing prey if they see one. If not controlled, smaller animals around them will not be safe all the time. This prey drive can be controlled by training your German Shepherd from a young age. Make sure your pet gets extensive socialization and obedience training to curb its dangerous instinct and make it behave well when they see potential prey. Still, it is always advisable to keep your German Shepherd on a leash whenever you take it out for a walk. Being high-energy dogs, they require more food than most breeds. Before you bring a German Shepherd home, make sure you consult the breeder about the nutritional requirements and dietary needs of your new companion. Whether you feed your pet dry kibble or homemade food, it should contain the right amounts of protein, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and water. When it comes to feeding your German Shepherd, frequency also plays a major role. The number of meals you feed your pet varies according to its age. Here is the dietary routine you should follow while feeding your German Shepherd at different stages of its life: Below 2 Months While your German Shepherd puppy is younger than two months, you can free-feed it. At this age, you need not worry about the puppy getting obese by eating a lot of food. You can leave the food open for your puppy and have it eat at its convenience. Between 2 And 4 Months As your German Shepherd gets older, you can start feeding it more dry kibble and structure its diet. At this stage of its life, you can feed your pet around four to five meals every day. Between 4 And 6 Months As your puppy gets older, you can further reduce its diet to three meals per day. This is when you should start being mindful of the amount of food it consumes. Overeating at this age can lead to your German Shepherd getting overweight in no time. Over 6 Months Once your German Shepherd gets older than six months, you can start feeding it not more than two meals a day. You can always give it its favorite treats and snacks in between. Keep track of the amount of food your pet eats on a meal-to-meal basis to prevent obesity and other health complications.
