Good in an apartment? Whether it is sitting on the couch and or throwing on the running shoes and going outside to run around and play! A healthy weight for a this breed varies for males its around and for females anywhere between pounds. Be sure to check in with your veterinarian to be sure you are on the right track of how much your dog should weigh. Which makes them such excellent watchdogs, due to their size and temperament. So make sure to nip any bad behavior in the bud before it gets out of hand. In this last part of the article, we will tell you about the Boxer Rottweiler Mix training, socialization, temperament, exercise, grooming and finally but not least the Rottweiler Boxer mix health issues. Photo by Doglime. Both parent breeds were bred to herd and defend against animals and humans. So training and socialization are two of the most important lessons to teach your puppy! So start as soon as you get home by teaching him or her the rules of the house by using positive reinforcement only. The best commands you can train your puppy on are to sit, stay, come, and lay down. When you are training, it is important to never give up on a command that you give! The moment you start allowing your puppy to not obey your commands is the day you give him the right to be the pack leader. The Rottweiler and Boxer are notorious for being hard-headed, and stubborn! So if you are having trouble training your commands into your puppy just know that it is not how your training your puppy but rather. It is just in their genetics to try and not follow your commands. So when training be firm but never heavy-handed. The best training methods are firm but gentle and never give in on command. Take your puppy out into the city whenever you are out. Let your puppy experience the sounds, smells and sights, this is getting your puppy used to the strange sound smells and sights. He also should be meeting different people and animals, on his daily walks. This gets him to understand that he needs to learn the proper temperament and manners in greeting other animals and more importantly humans. Lifespan Sociability The Boxweiler is a very active, high-energy dog whose intelligence allows for relatively easy training as long as it is done with consistency and patience. They enjoy a good cuddle as much as running after a ball and playing fetch. They are healthy dogs overall but having an understanding of some of the conditions that the parent breeds are susceptible to, will help you understand your dog as it ages. While they are not aggressive dogs, they are wary of strangers and other animals, so proper socialization as puppies is essential. The Boxweiler tends to gain weight and needs plenty of exercise. The Boxweiler will only drool depending on which parent it takes after. The Rottweiler tends to drool, whereas the Boxer does not. If the Boxweiler is more alike to the Boxer parent , it is less likely to drool, but if it takes after the Rottweiler parent, it could be a drooler. The Boxweiler may prefer to be the only pet in the household. If the Boxweiler is properly socialized as a puppy with other pets, they will accommodate and adapt well with other animals. However, the Boxweiler is a herding dog and will instinctively chase other animals, and therefore the household might benefit from keeping the Boxweiler as the only pet. If they are kept busy and not left alone for long periods, the Boxweiler will grow into a happy and well-adjusted dog that will make an excellent family pet. However, the Boxweiler would do best with older children that know how to play gently with this large dog. Children should be taught how to approach dogs in a gentle and non-threatening manner so the dog will feel comfortable and become an eager and energetic companion. The Boxweiler more than likely will have the same instincts and therefore, will do best in a home as the only pet. However, if properly socialized as a puppy, they could adapt to living with other pets, including cats. They might have a predisposition to gain weight, so following a strict schedule and not leaving food out throughout the day would work best. Coming from the Rottweiler and the Boxer, which are both working dogs, the Boxweiler needs to be kept busy with walks and play. Allowing these large dogs room to run in a yard makes them less suitable for apartments. Training should be accomplished with persistence and firmness tempered with praise and positive reinforcement. Consistent training and lots of socialization, while they are puppies, is critical. Trimming nails carefully, cleaning ears , and brushing teeth are all common grooming habits every dog needs to keep them healthy. Brushing their teeth regularly to avoid dental issues combined with frequent grooming will also help your dog to maintain its health. Minor Conditions Rottweilers might experience hypothyroidism , lower eyelid droop , cataracts and allergies. While Boxers are also susceptible to hypothyroidism, they are also prone to bowel disease and corneal erosion. Serious Conditions The Rottweiler is prone to hip dysplasia , bone cancer , heart disease and bloat or stomach dilatation. The Boxer might also experience hip dysplasia, heart disease, as well as bloat or stomach dilation like the Rottweiler, but are also susceptible to irregular heartbeat and occasional problems with spinal cord disease and brain tumors. The Boxweiler has the potential to inherit some of these health issues from its parents. Therefore, the vet will check for joint dysplasia, heart disease, bone cancer, and bloat. Male vs Female Most dog breeds have minor physical differences between male and female puppies. Like most species, the females tend to be a little lighter and smaller than the males. It is thought that females tend to be less aggressive and more affectionate than the males, but this subject is up for debate. The choice of using your dog for breeding purposes will make a difference as well between the male and the female. Most dogs become calmer and less aggressive or less energetic after surgery. The primary differences between all dogs, regardless of the sex, are based on how the puppies have been raised and socialized. Final Thoughts on the Boxweiler The Boxweiler is a beautiful, loyal, intelligent, and energetic hybrid of the Rottweiler and Boxer. A firm but kind and gentle hand is the best way to handle these large and sensitive dogs. Properly socializing them to smaller animals and children, while they are puppies, will give them the best possible outcome. Online discussions through social media or attending dog shows and contacting local and national dog clubs could provide you with further assistance. Boxweiler Highlights Boxweilers are mixed breed dogs. They are not purebreds like their Boxer or Rottweiler parents The main colors of the Boxweiler coats are fawn, black, brindle, white, and brown. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. These pups have short coats, though they are still moderate shedders. They are not hypoallergenic dogs. Boxweilers need at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. The Boxweiler may prefer to be mostly around adults and older kids who know how to play gently. Boxweilers can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. Boxweiler History The Boxweiler is believed to have been bred sometime in the s by crossing Boxers and Rottweilers together. What we do know is that both the Boxer and Rottweiler breeds have great histories. The ancestors of modern Boxers were used for many tasks, from hunting to guarding and herding cattle. This breed served as messenger dogs in World War I, carrying supplies and acting as guard and attack dogs. Rotties were often used to pull carts and served as guard dogs. Boxweilers are fairly likely to inherit many of the traits that have made their parent breeds so revered throughout history. The Rottweiler was inducted later in .Boxweiler Size As the Boxweiler is a mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to its size. That said, as a mix between Boxer and Rottweiler parents, you can expect the Boxweiler to be on the larger side. Most weigh in at 70 to pounds and range in height from 21 to 27 inches at the shoulder. However, many can be smaller or larger than normal. Boxweiler Personality Boxweilers are very loving and loyal dogs with lively personalities. This usually means they love running around and playing games like fetch with their pet parents. Even with their high energy, they are also affectionate and love to cuddle inside the house with their human counterparts. These large pooches are working dogs and enjoy fulfilling that purpose in one way or another. That means they can make great guardians or watchdogs of the household. They will bark or alert their owners at the first sign of trouble. These dogs do best with early training to curb any unwanted bad habits. They can be stubborn sometimes but are highly intelligent and can be easy to house train if you are energetic and consistent with their training. They also tend to latch on to one family member most of all, though they can get along with others in the house. The Boxweiler may be best suited for larger families with larger homes rather than small apartments. Boxweiler Health The Boxweiler mixed breed is predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Boxer and the Rottweiler also face. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Some of the more common health problems Boxweilers suffer from include: joint dysplasia. This will encourage him and keep him engaged throughout the training process. This applies to all breeds and not just the Rottweiler Boxer Mix. The basic commands you can teach your Boxweiler puppy include come, stay, and sit. Never give up on any command. Otherwise, they might see themselves as the pack leader. Both Boxers and Rottweilers have the potential to be stubborn , so you need to be firm but kind. Socializing your Rottweiler Boxer Mix is also an essential part of training. This will help your puppy to get used to different people, places and situations. Your pup should not become scared where he sees strange things. You should also allow him to meet different animals during those daily walks. Proper socialization will allow him to learn good manners when he meets people and other animals. Exercise Needs The Boxer Rottweiler Mix is a result of two energetic dog breeds with a working background, so you can expect your pup to have lots of energy. They can gain weight quickly if their exercise needs are not met. You should take your Boxweiler out for walks at least twice a day. He also needs a fenced-in yard to move and play around in. They also love playing with other canines, provided they are well socialized. Being intelligent and playful, your Boxweiler also needs mental stimulation in the form of interactive dog toys. However, they also need proper grooming. The Rottweiler Boxer Mix is a moderate shedder and needs to be brushed at least two to three times a week. Although Boxweilers have short hair, they shed moderately throughout the year. These dogs require brushing in order to keep their rough coat in tiptop condition. Due to their self-grooming potential, they can stay clean for some time. However, bathing should still be done at least once per month. Trim their nails carefully and clean their ears as needed. Their diet must meet their nutrition needs. Select a high quality dog food that is specifically made for large and energetic dogs. Make sure to feed your pooch only two to three times each day. Avoid free feeding your pup as this may lead to obesity. To prevent joint issues and to maintain coat and skin health, give them probiotics and wild Alaskan salmon oil. Your Boxweiler also needs fresh water each day to stay hydrated. Rottweiler Boxer mix puppies What is a Boxweiler? The Boxweiler is a mixed breed dog with one Rottweiler parent and one Boxer dog parent. They are usually bred as pet dogs, but also have a rich working history on both sides of the family. It is thought to have descended from the Drover dogs of ancient Rome. Here they are thought to have mixed with local breeds such as the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Appenzeller. It was added to the American Kennel Club registry in .The Rottweiler is a working dog, used throughout history for bear hunting, police work, cattle herding, and even to pull carriages for passengers. It is descended from the Tibetan line of Mastiff which in turn was a descendent of the Molossus. A full grown Boxweiler will typically weigh between 60 and 80 pounds — although reaching up to lbs is not unheard of. They are typically happy, healthy pups with an average lifespan of 8 to 13 years. As for physical appearance, the breed can take on characteristics of either parent. So, it can end up looking like either parent breed. The one, mostly uniform characteristic is a large, square head. The Rottweiler has a stocky, muscular body, while the Boxer has a lean, muscular build. A Boxweiler could take on either of these body types, or somewhere in between. Their colorings vary, but are almost always a shade of brown. Mixed brown and black spots are also possible. And they will sometimes have a white splotch on their chest or belly. Boxer Rottweiler Mix Grooming Boxweilers are moderate shedders and should be brushed about times per week. Although they are short haired, they can still shed quite a bit all year round. This breed requires moderate grooming in order to keep its rough coat in good shape. Full of energy, these pups are highly intelligent and loyal. They are typically friendly, but can get quite protective and will keep a close eye on strangers. Boxweilers are working dogs, so they tend to enjoy having some sort of role to fill. Rottweiler Boxer mix dogs are loving and affectionate, and enjoy human interaction. They are moderately dependent — meaning that they can be left alone, but they are prone to separation anxiety if left on their own for long periods of time. Boxweilers are usually good with other dogs, although early socialization is key. They are very good with children, so long as they are socialized properly. Boxweilers need to be walked at least twice per day. And ideally should have a fenced yard to run around in. They enjoy playing with other dogs, so long as they are properly socialized and not aggressive. A Boxweiler puppy can take on any of the attributes — positive or negative — of either parent. Boxers are more prone to heart conditions, cancers, hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, and degenerative myelopathy. Rottweilers are more prone to eye problems like cataracts, heart problems, gastroenteritis, hypothyroidism, and other conditions. Since both breeds have a tendency for heart problems, this should be one of the primary concerns for new Boxweiler parents. Several heart conditions are possible, but the most serious is probably Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy. A condition that can be fatal. Weight gain is another common issue with this breed. Rottweiler Boxer mix dogs can put on weight quickly. If not exercised enough or if overfed, they can become overweight. Canine obesity can also increase the risk of other health problems, particularly relating to the heart. Some other potential health issues. These include joint dysplasia, hip dysplasia , allergies, mange, pano, cancer, heart defects, bloat, eye problems, and deafness. Are mixed breeds healthier? Some claim that pedigree, purebred breeds are superior due to their consistency and predictability. On the other side of the aisle, many breeders and fans of the crossbreed claim that there are significant benefits to designer dogs. There are some legitimate potential health issues with purebred dogs. These are often caused by years of inbreeding — which can sometimes be reduced through cross breeding. Cross breeding advocates claim that there can be some benefits to genetic diversity in dog breeds. Ultimately, it all comes down to the breeding process, the knowledge of the breeder, and the genetics of the parents. Certain cross breeds are prone to specific behavioral and health issues, but the same could be said for certain purebred dogs. The biggest consideration is the energy level of these dogs. Boxweilers need regular exercise, at least twice per day. They also should have plenty of space to move around, so a small apartment is likely not suitable for this breed. Beyond that, consider the fact that Boxweilers are prone to separation anxiety. If you work long hours and will need to leave your dog alone all day, this breed is probably not going to be the best choice. Overall, the Boxweiler is a friendly and social breed. Boxweilers are protective without being overly aggressive. They can make very good guard dogs and will not hesitate to protect your family should the need arise. Prospective Boxweiler parents should weigh the pros and cons of the breed — including potential health problems — before making their decision. An experienced breeder will know the proper techniques for breeding healthy, happy dogs. They will likely test the parents for potential health problems, which helps to reduce the risk of health concerns in the puppies. When you locate a breeder, ask to see any health certificates or test results that they have for the parents. It could have been treated poorly or abused, which could translate to aggression or unwanted behavior. With that said, every dog deserves a good home. If you are willing to adopt and accept the risks, we encourage it. References and Further Reading Malm et al. Connect with us in Monterey for a World-class Standard Poodle! Photos and video also doesn't do the colour justice as the colour varies in intensity depending on the lighting. The one thing that was not mistakable was that this was a colour I had never before seen. The best part was that their temperaments were calm, very loving with eyes that would melt any cold heart. I also met the parents and the grandparents and saw photos going back 5 generations. I was hooked on the colour and knew my research had proved correct. I found my breeders. We often get asked "what does a red look like in person" Our reply is "same as a dark red headed human" Their hair is also as fine. A typical red will love lying in our laps and winding around our legs like cats for affection or attention. They are a very "soft" natured dog and respond well to "positive" training. If you are harsh with them or they sense they are disappointing you they will mentally just shut down and pout. They also want to be everywhere with you including the bathroom. You will always hear the pitter patter of a red standards feet as they will be your shadow. They love working for praise and or a laugh. Once they know a trick, they will produce it with amazing precision with eager eyes waiting, begging for your praise and you better be lavish with it if you want to see them happy. Rose pups I would describe our reds as being the most empathetic of all the colours. It is as if they can read you and decide if you are happy in which case they may be silly to get a laugh or they know that you are sad and will be calm and quiet and just rest their head on your lap waiting for you to invite them up on the couch to watch a movie with you. I do find that the reds are more "dedicated" to their owners. Valor and Ember Do not leave your red standard poodle at the window while you go to get a Tim Horton's coffee or you will be met with the back of your red standard poodle and hear sighs of "woe" until you are forgiven. Thankfully reds like all poodles, forgive quickly. I will warn anyone that is thinking about getting a red Standard and plans on walking them, that you will not get past a block without someone stopping you to see your puppy. Everyone will want to know what breed it is and you will hear people exclaim "I didn't know poodles came that colour or that size". We have almost caused accidents by people slamming on their brakes to stop to look at us. One thing is for sure is that if you go walking with your red you will make many friends Paris waiting for her owner to finish in the bathroom, after she tried unsuccessfully to get in This color Red is NOT for everyone. If you are not used to having a dog constantly at your feet or on your lap, constantly touching you, or wanting to be in the same room as you then you might find a red to be too "needy". If you have plans on doing Pet Therapy with a Red they are perfect for this as they are so gentle and caring, but please -limit- the time you offer your Red to the service, as they can become easily drained from them absorbing others emotional and sometimes physical pain. They do love obedience and showing, of course as how better for them to show everyone how smart and pretty they are! During that time, I broke both my feet and also required both of my hips to be replaced.
They double both as your best friend and excellent therapy and service dogs. All of the dogs you can get from this breeder are tested for various diseases and have passed their tests. Read More About Our Australian Labradoodles and their origin This classic example of logical and planned crossbreeding was created in the country of Australia in the s. The goal of the Australian clubs is to create a new "breed" with the best attributes of the original breeds. The original objective was to produce assistance dogs that do not shed hair for people with allergies. Australians, on the other hand, have taken the Labradoodle a few steps further. In mid it was announced that the Australian Labradoodle was not just a Labrador x Poodle cross , but was a breed in its own right developed over many years with particular goals in mind. To accomplish these goals, further development was done with parent breed infusions added to the already blooming Labrador x Poodle cross lines. The developers of the breed sought out the best way in which to compliment the Australian Labradoodle breed, and to develop the authentic qualities that they find and love in these dogs. In the very first Australian Labradoodle Breed Standard was written which reflected these goals. The Australian Labradoodle currently consists of 6 different breeds in its origin. Buying A Boxer Puppy? Finding Your Puppy -- Buying From the Breeder The conscientious breeder plans a breeding to reproduce the best characteristics of an outstanding sire or dam. His guide is the official AKC Standard of the breedthe written "blueprint" that helps keep the breed uniform for generations to come. You can find the breed standard, revised in , at the American Boxer Club website: www. The more common disappointments for pet purchasers come from commercial sources--especially pet shops that often buy puppies from the infamous "puppy mills" that take little notice of the quality or health they are producing. The pet store or dog broker will sell you a puppy with a breeder's name attached to the paperwork--but this puppy may easily have been born in a puppy mill. The reputable breeder, on the other hand, will not only be able to demonstrate the pedigree and registration papers, but will also show you either the sire or dam themselves, or pictures of the parent who may be owned elsewhere. Though the mere presence of "papers" does not guarantee good health, conformation, or temperament, you will most often find these attributes in the puppy who has been raised with loving care in the home or kennel of a conscientious hobby breeder. The serious breeder often strives to produce a potential "champion. Sometimes the distribution of white markings alone may make the difference between the so-called "pet" and show-potential puppy. The pet puppy will have benefited from the same proven bloodlines, nutrition, and medical care as its "champion" littermate. His breeder will have health tested the parents and done the best he can to insure good temperament, soundness, and longevity. Here is your best buy. Boxer magazines publish ads from breeders. The American Boxer Club web site www. Usually any time after weeks. Many states have regulations regarding minimum age. However, your individual circumstances must be considered. Do you have the time to spend with a very young puppy? Will someone be home to housebreak him? Would an exuberant 6-month old puppy overwhelm a tiny child? Or would he be better matched with a 6-year-old youngster? Remember too that the puppy under 3 months needs lots of time to rest. Don't forget that adult dogs, already trained, also make ideal pets. While much can be told at six to eight weeks about the puppy's eventual looks, if you are seeking a show prospect you might be better off waiting until the pup is six to eight months of age. At that time, be prepared to pay a higher price for all the additional time and effort that the breeder has spent raising the show potential Boxer. Male or Female? This choice is a matter of personal preference. Both males and females make admirable pets. Breeding is a serious committment of time, energy, and money, and not to be taken lightly. If breeding is not anticipated, it may be appropriate to spay or neuter your dog. This procedure is best done as your Boxer approaches adolescence. Please be aware that these surgeries should be discussed with your veterinarian as to safety of anesthesia and any long term effects other than sterilization. Spayed and neutered animals are not eligible to compete in the conformation ring but may be shown in performance events. Check this list! Tails should have been docked within a few days of birth. Optional removal of front dewclaws fifth toes is done at the same time. The Boxer has no rear dewclaws. Ear cropping is customary and appropriate but not required--it is a matter of personal preference. Uncropped ears are permitted under the breed standard. If cropped, this procedure is done under general anesthesia, usually between six and nine weeks of age. If the puppy is taken before cropping, the breeder usually makes arrangements. The breeder also advises regarding aftercare and taping if ears are not already standing. Sometimes this is a lengthy process. In the male, both testicles should be descended into the scrotum. They should be in place by two to three months of age. A dog with undescended testicles may still make a fine pet, though he would be ineligible to compete in the conformation show ring. Consult your veterinarian for advice. Avoid the unusually quiet, inactive puppy, or the one that might shy away from you. This might mean a fault in temperament or even ill health. Papers the Seller Should Furnish: a. A three or four generation pedigree signed by the seller. There should be no extra charge for this. The pedigree preferably gives the color of the sire and dam, and the AKC registration numbers of each. The registration from the AKC, which is an official document identifying your puppy's individual registration number, sex, birth date, sire and dam, and name of the breeder s. There are two ways to register puppies for the first time: 1 Limited Registration If the puppy is not to be bred, and is being purchased only as a companion pet, the breeder may check off the Limited Registration option. This does register the puppy with the AKC. However, it does not allow any registration of offspring from the mature dog. The breeder and only the breeder can cancel the limited registration should the puppy at maturity be considered of breeding quality. Records the Breeder Should Furnish: a. Date and type of vaccines given. Depending on the type of vaccination program started, your veterinarian will advise you on following through. Vaccination protocols are evolving even among the medical professionals. Date and agent used for worming, if done. Do not worm your puppy without consulting your veterinarian. Avoid store-bought preparations which can be dangerous. Diet your puppy has been receiving. It is well to maintain the regimen begun by the breeder, especially while the puppy is adjusting to his new home. If changes are to be made. When he is an adult it will be wise to maintain your Boxer on two smaller meals a day. Vocality level 3 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament The Boxer is playful, exuberant, inquisitive, attentive, demonstrative, devoted, and outgoing; this dog is a perfect companion for an active family. Boxers can be stubborn, but are sensitive and responsive to commands. They may be assertive toward strange dogs, but are generally good with other family dogs and pets. Upkeep The Boxer needs daily mental and physical exertion. They likes to run, but their exercise needs can also be met with a good jog or long walk on leash. They do not do well in hot weather. Some snore. The coat needs only occasional brushing to remove dead hair. Health Major concerns: boxer cardiomyopathy, SAS, CHD Minor concerns: gastric torsion, hypothyroidism, corneal erosion, colitis Occasionally seen: brain tumors, degenerative myelopathy Suggested tests: thyroid, hip, cardiac Holter monitoring Life span: 8—10 years Note: Sensitive to heat. White boxers may be deaf. The drug acepromazine can cause severe reactions. History The Boxer derives from two central European breeds of dog that no longer exist: the larger Danziger Bullenbeiser and smaller Brabenter Bullenbeiser. Bullenbeiser means bull-biter, and these dogs were used to chase large game through the forest. This required a strong but agile dog with a broad powerful jaw and a recessed nose. In England, the Bulldog was the favored breed for the sport, whereas in Germany large mastiff-type dogs were used. Around the s, German hunters began a concerted effort to create a new breed, crossing their Bullenbeisers with mastiff-type dogs for size, terriers for tenacity, and, finally, Bulldogs. The result was a tough agile dog with a streamlined body and strong grip. By , an entirely new breed, the Boxer, had been established. Although the exact origin of the name Boxer is obscure, it may have been derived from the German Boxl. The Boxer was one of the first breeds to be employed as a police and military dog in Germany. By , the breed had become established as a general utility dog, family pet, and even show dog. The AKC recognized the breed soon after, but only in the s did the breed begin its steady rise to the top of the popularity charts, eventually peaking as the fourth most popular breed in America. Related Content. Life Span Did You Know? The Boxer is one of the most popular dog breeds in the United States. It has been recognized by the AKC since .Although the Boxer dog breed originated in Germany, their ancient ancestry can be traced back to the Assyrian empire war dogs of BC. The modern Boxer breed we know and love today was originally developed in Germany in the late s. English-bred Bulldogs and the Bullenbesiier were crossed to create an energetic and agile hunting dog to chase wild game. The Boxer is a popular family companion and a versatile working dog. As a member of the Working Group, Boxers can be found competing in dog sports like agility, obedience, and herding. They also make great service and assistance dogs, as well as therapy dogs, and can be found working as search and rescue dogs, drug detection dogs, police dogs, and military dogs. The Boxer is a muscular and energetic dog that tends to have a happy, friendly disposition. They bond closely with their families and tend to get along well with children and other dogs. They can even do well with other pets despite their high prey drive if they are socialized and trained with them. As long as they are well-socialized, Boxers are generally upbeat, playful, and friendly. Although they have a natural instinct to protect their family from unwanted visitors, they do tend to warm up once introduced and are happy to make a new friend. They can be prone to barking a lot if you do not work on socialization and training your dog to stop barking early on. Boxers can be highly adaptable dogs. Although they have a lot of energy and are better suited to homes with yards where they can run, they can adapt to apartment living as long as they get the daily exercise, attention, and mental stimulation they need. As with any non-arctic dog breed, they are sensitive to very cold temperatures. Boxers are also a brachycephalic breed, which means they are even more sensitive to heat than other dogs. A Boxer is also one of the most affectionate dog breeds. Because they bond so closely with their families and get bored easily, they should not be left alone for long periods of time. Potential health conditions to be aware of in a Boxer include hip dysplasia, degenerative myelopathy, thyroid issues , and heart conditions like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. Good breeding practices make a big difference and reputable breeders will screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you are asking the breeder about the health and genetic history of the parents and about any health tests that have been done. Boxers are intelligent dogs that are eager to please their owners. Despite their energetic personality, they are one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners and are highly trainable dogs. They tend to excel at almost any task put before them! Because of their open, friendly nature and high energy, they have a tendency to jump up at people in excitement and playfulness. Since they grow into powerful dogs, you will want to make sure you train your dog not to jump up. Boxers have smooth and short coats that will shed a little year-round and require minimal grooming. A brush-down once or twice a week and the occasional bath as needed will keep their short coat healthy and looking great. Nail trims once or twice a month are usually enough to keep nails from growing too long. Checking ears weekly and carefully cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Checking and wiping their facial wrinkles weekly or a few times a week if your dog is prone to getting into things can help keep their wrinkles clean and free of irritation. Dental diseases, like gum disease, are the most common health issues in older dogs because dental care is often overlooked; and, it can lead to other serious health issues. Brushing daily, plus cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. The Boxer is a high-energy dog breed that needs plenty of daily exercise to stay happy and healthy. Due to their high prey drive and urge to chase, they should only be let off-leash in secure areas. Boxers tend to get bored with repetition, are excellent problem solvers, and are naturally exuberant. A fully-grown Boxer usually stands inches tall at the shoulder and weighs pounds. Boxers generally live years on average. In Germany, the Boxer was one of the first dog breeds chosen for police training. Featured Boxer Article.

What is a Red Golden Retriever? While Red Golden Retrievers can grow as big as a normal golden retriever, they are often smaller than most normal golden retrievers. Red Golden Retrievers are very similar to Golden Retrievers in many ways. The main difference besides their coat color is their energy levels. Red Retrievers were bred to aid in hunting birds and are known to be more athletic than standard Goldens. They need to be exercised more often to get all of their energy out. We stand by our pups, which is why we work alongside licensed veterinarians to ensure that our puppies are healthy and always up to date on their deworming and vaccination protocols. We also offer a 2-year genetic health guarantee on all of our puppies. That way, you can rest easy knowing your puppy is healthy and free from genetic defects and congenital diseases. Our mission is dedicated to connecting healthy, beautiful puppies with their forever families. Because their temperament is friendly, energetic, and patient. These pups are known for being loyal, intelligent, and devoted. Due to their higher energy levels they were bred to hunt after all , they do best with active families where they can get a lot of attention and are great with children. Luckily Red Retrievers and Goldens alike are known for their soft mouths since they were bred to hunt birds. The original Goldens came to be as a result of cross-breeding between various different breeds including: Water Spaniels, Yellow Retrievers, Irish Settlers, and Bloodhounds over several generations. In other words, all Golden Retriever subtypes including the English Cream Golden Retriever subtype , are members of the same family, or breed. Oftentimes, cheaper golden retriever puppies can ultimately cost you a LOT more money in the long run because they are more likely to have health issues. Are Red Goldens more expensive? Because of their elegant red coats and rarity, Red Goldens can be more expensive than certain other subtypes of Golden Retriever. Both are very similar in temperament, friendliness, socialness, health, and looks. They differ most in coat color, size, and energy. They are typically the smallest puppies of the litter and are more athletic meaning more energy to burn! How big is a full-grown Red Golden Retriever? The weight range for these sweet pups can be from pounds for full-grown males, and pounds for full-grown females. Additionally, these babies tend to stand at about inches tall, with males being on the taller end of the spectrum. Do Red Goldens shed? Yes, all types and variations of Golden Retrievers shed, and this is entirely normal for the breed. However, it is worth noting that because the Red Goldens often have a coat that is slightly shorter than typical Goldens, some owners claim they shed less overall. Problem solved! Are Red Golden Retrievers aggressive? The good news is— no, Red Golden Retrievers are not aggressive dogs by nature even with their higher energy levels. They still have the same sweet, calm, and lovable disposition which makes them a fantastic addition to any family to give plenty of attention to everyone including yours. Are Red Goldens more calm? Usually not, when compared to other subtypes of Golden Retrievers. While Red Golden Retrievers are much alike to Golden Retrievers with their high patience levels, they are known to have more energy. Are Red Golden Retrievers Rare? The gene manifests relatively rarely compared to other colors. Standard Golden Retrievers Image Credit: lecreusois, Pixabay This is probably the first thing that comes to mind when picturing a Golden Retriever color. Be sure to give them a good proper brushing at least twice a week to keep their golden coats shining their best. Another key to keeping their coats at their peak condition is to ensure that your Golden maintains a healthy diet full of Omega-3s. They fall between the cream Golden Retrievers and the standards on the color spectrum. This is the second variety of Golden Retriever color that is accepted by International Kennel Clubs for show. These are often among the most striking of Goldens with their deep gold coats. One thing to note about their color is that while they do bear a close semblance to the Red Golden Retriever—more on them later—they lack the amber or red hues found on the former. Their golden coat is a pure gold color just deeper than that of the standard variation. Often, the ears will be darker than the rest of the coat, and a good sign of how dark these pups will get as they mature. But there are also some different peculiarities about this color when compared to the rest. Cream Colored Retrievers normally have a thinner coat than their darker-haired relatives. However, they shed just as much. However, these are just shameless marketing tactics. The origin of this breed is believed to come from Ireland where standard Golden Retrievers were crossbred with Irish Setters. This theory does make sense as the dogs are generally leaner and more compact than other Golden Retrievers. They also have less feathering around their legs and tail. However, that may change in the future. Golden Retrievers shed a lot , especially during peak seasons. Your Golden may require two or three brushings a week when they start blowing their coat. And the best way to do this is with a slicker brush. A slicker brush is normally a wide, rectangular brush with firm wire bristles. These are absolutely perfect for grooming Golden Retrievers as the brush is designed to easily pull out tangles without causing any damage to their skin. Conclusion There are 5 true Golden Retriever colors, each of which shares the same wonderful, loving temperament. For more info, check out:. Golden Retriever Colors Which color is the best? The Impact of Age on Color Changes Golden retriever puppies often exhibit a light, almost white, coat in their early days. Eventually, your golden retriever pup might go through a bit of an awkward phase in terms of their coat color. This usually happens around the 6 to month mark, which coincides with their adolescent stage. The colors might darken or lighten, leading to a playful guessing game — will they end up golden, light golden, or dark golden? By the time your golden retriever reaches their first birthday, their adult coat colors should have settled in, resembling their permanent shade. Some pups might undergo subtle changes in hue as they age, but by and large, the transformation is done. The most popular Golden Retriever color is largely claimed by the classic shade of gold, which ranges from a light cream to a rich, deep gold hue. Golden Retrievers adorned in these warm, golden tones tend to capture the hearts of many dog enthusiasts. What is the Rarest Golden Retriever Color? Are they darker than the rest of the coat? If yes, then the coat most likely gonna be as dark. If the parents are both light-colored, the puppy is more likely to develop a light color. And vice versa. If they are mixed, then this method, unfortunately, not gonna help much. The breeder, a good one, will eagerly answer your questions and provide information about the puppy. Most breeders keep track of every dog they owned. If their offsprings tend to get darker, then there is a big chance your puppy will be darker as well. So, virtually any blanket statements about these dogs should be taken with a grain of salt. At the end of the day, all you can count on when you bring home a Pugshire Terrier is that the dog will be small. Their exact origins are unknown. Accidental Pugshire Terriers might have even been what inspired a breeder to start crossing the two breeds on purpose. One thing we can say for sure is that the purposeful breeding of Yorkies and Pugs has only really caught steam in the last 30 years or so and predominantly in the United States. Most Pugshire Terriers suffer from little dog syndrome. Little dog issues notwithstanding, Pugshire Terriers are great at eliciting laughter. These dogs need plenty of activity, but they can get that by simply goofing off for your benefit. It would crush their fragile little egos. Pugs, on the other hand, are less so. Regardless, Pugshires tend to be highly intelligent dogs. However, this often works against their owners as much as for them. As far as temperament is concerned, these are playful and energetic dogs. However, you have to socialize and train them well, as they can be full of nervous energy, especially around children and strangers. Are These Dogs Good for Families? In fact, you may need as many family members around as possible to help you burn through all their energy. That said, families with small children should be careful, as these dogs can have hair-trigger tempers. The animal needs to be socialized to be around kids, and the kids need to be taught the healthy ways of dealing with dogs. All you need is a little open space, a bit of free time, and a playful spirit. Their Little Dog Syndrome can work for you in certain respects. They may even try to chase them off! However, that pesky Little Dog Syndrome can rear its ugly head at inopportune moments, so you should watch them carefully. As far as cats and other small pets are concerned, be careful. Pugshires also have a strong jealous streak, so they may not appreciate seeing you lavish attention on another animal. Owning one might be like having a Pug, it may be like having a Yorkie, or it could be a mix of the two. That said, there are a few things that are consistent regardless of how the dog turns out. However, feeding them the right food is just as important as feeding them the right amount. This will help them feel full without packing on excess pounds, and it will also help keep them regular. Given how small these dogs are, you should pay attention to the size of the kibble that they eat as well. Fortunately, most kibbles designed for smaller dogs use small pieces of kibble. As a general rule, they need at least an hour of physical stimulation every day to stay happy and healthy. A long walk will generally do the trick, or you can just have them race around your apartment. You need to be careful about not pushing them too hard, in fact. Just as important as physical exercise is mental stimulation. You want to tax their sharp little minds, so games like hide and seek, obedience training, or puzzle toys are all excellent ways to burn off that mental energy. These pups are stubborn. There are no two ways about it, so expect to find yourself locked in a battle of wills during most training sessions. They respond best to positive reinforcement, and punishment will likely just cause them to dig in their heels and behave even worse. Be careful if you use food as a reward, though. Obesity is terrible for these pups, and they can easily get fat if you give them too many treats. Use them sparingly, and substitute praise and affection as much as possible. The fact that Pugshires are notoriously difficult to train makes them a poor choice for first-time dog owners. Pay extra attention to the hair around their ears and behind the neck. Bathing is largely optional unless they get visibly dirty, but if you do want to clean them, limit it to a few times a year. You should use a gentle, dog-friendly shampoo. Their eyes should be given special attention as well, as Pugs are known for having eye issues. Clean away any discharge, and take them to the vet if you see any sort of problem. That said, they still have their fair share of health issues. In particular, obesity will cause all sorts of horrible health issues for your pup. Keep their waistline trim and slim. Do your due diligence before buying a puppy. Also, Pugs are vulnerable to different health conditions than Yorkies, although there is a certain amount of overlap. As a result, the issues that your dog will be most likely to develop will depend in part on which parent breed they favor. Minor Conditions. They have a deep bond of attachment with their owners, following them from room to room, longing for them to return home. This energetic breed is a great playmate for children, though parental supervision is needed when small kids interact with the dogs to ensure that they do not end up hurting their four-legged friend. Just like the Pug, they too might get jealous when the owner gives special attention to another animal canine or noncanine in the family or probably a child. Despite their high energy levels and playful disposition, they enjoy taking naps for a long time. These dogs are clever and would spend their intelligence to think over a given situation, and might even display obstinate behavior at times. Combined with its alert and attentive nature, its occasional bouts of yappiness may be a great alarm to warn the presence of a stranger, thus making them a good watchdog. Care Exercise Your dog loves to go outdoors for walks to indulge in its inherent curiosity and explore new surroundings. It is recommended that you take your dog out for a leashed walk for at least half an hour every day. Give the Pugshire sufficient playtime when it is indoors too, to help it get over any boredom and be energized Grooming Shedding is minimal to average. To keep the coat from forming mats and keep dead hairs away, comb it twice to thrice each week. Also, brush its teeth at least 3 or 4 times weekly to avoid tartar buildup. Shampooing it once a month is enough. Health Problems Your pugshire puppies tend to carry some of the genetic issues related to its parent breeds including periodontal disease, cherry eye, tracheal collapse, Legg Calve Perthes disease and patellar luxation. Training Because of the inherent stubbornness in the Pugshire just as their parents, a patient and firm trainer is needed who would be able to groom them in a tactful way through positive reinforcement methods, rather than being harsh. Obedience: Generalize your training to varying conditions. Continue with these variations until he learns to obey your commands consistently in all environments. If he is still adamant to get your attention, ignore him until he gets calmed and pacified after which you may pat or cuddle him. In this way he will gradually realize that to get your attention and love he would need to behave well. Socialization: To help them overcome their feelings of jealousy, get the other dog or pet in your family to interact or socialize with the Pugshire and pay equal attention to both or all of them alternately so that neither of them feels left out. Normal routine diet, recommended for small size energetic breeds. Is the Pugshire right for you? What should we call this yorkie and pug mix? He would get about walks a week. He liked to dig in the trash cans so we had to keep them up! He was a great cuddler, played with other dogs well, he stuck around the house when he was let outside, loved children, other dogs and all people. I feel that Bruno was an outstanding dog and very well balanced. He loved the snow, and water on hot days. He was truly an amazing dog with a one-of-a-kind personality and will be greatly missed. He is a really smart, playful dog. The trick I think to these dogs is routine, consistency and time spent. He loves to play and go for walks. He is also very loyal; on a trip to the bush for a week at 4 months old he never took off for longer than 20 minutes or so, and always came back to see where we were. I do watch the Dog Whisperer and everything I have watched works, kennel training, potty training , eating habits , and dominance. He responds best to positive reinforcement; treats are not always needed—he just wants you to be happy with him. Everything I have tried from Cesar works in about a week of consistency and training. They're very cute like a baby, but remember they think like dogs. He is our dog and he is 10 months and just a pure angel! But he does have the Yorkie personality which wants to investigate everything! Always into something. He has grown to the size of a Pug with the looks of the Yorkie and the temperament of a Yorkie! The other pups from the litter look completely different. They look more like a Pug but the size of a Yorkie. She is the smartest, sweetest and most energetic dog I know and we love her to death. They are pugshire sisters. Today is their 1 year Birthday. They are energetic and very clingy, lol! They follow me wherever I go. And they are usually side by side. They are tiresome but amazing! For the most part, they can eat just about any high-quality dog food. Due to their smaller size, they may benefit from small-breed food. Their small mouth can make it difficult for them to eat normal kibble. These dogs are not prone to any dietary-linked health conditions. However, they can develop obesity if not exercised correctly. Therefore, you must watch their weight. Obesity can lead to all sorts of health problems. While a lack of exercise is often the root cause of obesity in this breed, diet can play a role too. Only feed them as much as they need, nothing more. If you believe that your dog is obese, speak with your vet about weight-control dog food. This can potentially cause nutritional deficiencies. They need to be taken outdoors to run and play for at least 30 minutes each day. This can take the form of a short walk, though playing in a backyard can work too. Without this daily activity, it is easy for your dog to become bored and under-stimulated. If you want a well-behaved dog, they must be properly exercised. Plus, these sports can be a fun way to meet their exercise needs. These dogs tend to have a shortened snout, which can make it challenging for them to swim correctly. Dry drowning is more common with brachycephalic breeds, a category that some Pugshires fall into. Like all dogs, they need fresh air and sunlight to thrive. However, if the weather is bad, a few fast play sessions indoors are completely doable! They were not bred with obedience in mind. Luckily, they are often well-behaved indoors, so this is less of a problem. You should still work to teach them basic commands. We highly recommend taking these dogs to training classes. These will help substantially with training, and they also provide easy socialization, which is essential for this breed. Aim to introduce your dog to a wide range of other dogs at a relatively young age. While they do typically get along just fine with other canines, socialization is still crucial. Otherwise, they may be fearful of other canines, which can lead to aggression. It is common for these dogs to have trouble being housetrained. Not only are they more difficult to train in general, but they also have small bladders. Therefore, housetraining tends to be quite difficult. We recommend being extremely patient. Take it extremely slow, and always backstep if they have an accident. They need to be brushed every 3—4 days to prevent excessive shedding. These brushing sessions will also help keep your canine clean. The brush will remove hair, dirt, and debris. You should only bathe your Pugshire when they need it, like if they roll in the mud. However, you should not bathe them on a schedule. They tend to have relatively sensitive skin, and too many baths can quickly lead to skin irritation. When you do need to bathe them, be sure to use a sensitive-skin shampoo. Your dog may not need it, but it is always better to play it safe. You will also need to trim their toenails and clean out their ears regularly, about once or twice a month. However, these dogs can have extremely shortened snouts. This can result in them being classified as brachycephalic, like their Pug parent. Due to this deformed snout, these dogs can have many different health problems. For instance, many brachycephalic dogs cannot breathe correctly. Therefore, they have a hard time exercising or undergoing surgery. Cataracts are another common problem. These are treatable, though, unlike their shortened snout. Many older dogs develop cataracts, and this breed just seems to be particularly prone to this eye condition. Tracheal collapse is another potential problem. This condition is exactly what it sounds like: the collapse of their trachea. With the right care, this condition is treatable. It is simply important to seek care as quickly as possible. If the dog has skin folds, they could be more at risk for skin irritation. Moisture and dirt can get trapped in their skin folds and cause infections. Therefore, baths and similar activities can dry their skin out, causing redness and inflammation. Their irritated skin can become itchy. If the dog scratches too much, they can tear open the skin. Minor Conditions.

But the best way to learn how to train a German Shepherd puppy at home is to work on your own behavior first. You should show them what behavior is unacceptable in your house. This means that you must stay consistent when responding to their behavior. For example: If your pup jumps on you and you redirect their attention to a toy to chew on instead. But, then your pup jumps on your friend and your friend lets them and you say nothing. This makes it likely that your dog will jump on whoever they feel like in the future. Use reward-based training. Use reward-based German Shepherd training techniques to get the quickest results. Reward-based training helps your puppy recognize when something is a bad choice source. It is established that German Shepherds pant a lot, mostly due to their size. Size is not the only factor as to why German Shepherds pant, as panting is something all dogs do to cool down. Panting is a natural, normal behavior in dogs that they instinctively use to control their body temperature, in response to the climate. Equally, dogs are not able to sweat through their skin. They do not have the efficient arrangement of sweat glands like we do as humans. Instead, canines cool down using the evaporation of moisture coming from their mouths, tongues, paws and nose. Panting helps dogs to exchange the warm air of their lungs for colder external air. With such few outlets to sweat, a dog can get very hot very fast. So, by quickly drawing in breaths of fresh air, they are able to stay cooler. Excessive panting can be a worry for many dog owners, but bear in mind; panting is not labored breathing. Labored breathing is often described as difficult respiration and is usually accompanied by distressing sounds like whining, crying, or whistling due to a blockage in the windpipe or the nostrils. As previously mentioned, German Shepherds are known to pant more than most other breeds of dog. This is for two main reasons. For one, the German Shepherd has a thick double coat that can be heavy and that naturally insulates heat. To help reduce the buildup of heat, panting is used to compensate. Secondly, German Shepherds are a relatively large breed of dog. They therefore have a higher energy level than most other breeds. Equally, because German Shepherds enjoy running, they can easily overheat — especially compared to dogs that are a lot more docile and calm. There are, however, several other factors that can make your Shepherd pant more than usual. Some of these factors are troubling, but there is usually something you can do about it. Some are to be expected whereas others are a little more serious. Your German Shepherd Has Just Exercised It is usual for German Shepherds to pant a lot after exercising or a period of activity; this provides more oxygen to their muscles. Of course, if your dog is panting for longer than expected, even after a sufficient period of time has passed since activity, it may be a good idea to speak to your vet. Equally, if you notice that even a small amount or moderate amount of exercise causes excessive panting, then this could indicate a potential problem. German Shepherds are sensitive to people and situations. These dogs can easily become frightened by loud noises like thunderstorms or fireworks, or can even be afraid of a certain person. They can also suffer from seperation anxiety when left alone for too long. In each of these situations above, your dog may suffer from excessive panting. As an owner you should monitor your dog in new environments and try to become familiar with their behavior in different contexts. This way you can identify whether certain situations are causing panting to arise and can then make suitable adjustments to help prevent the panting or support your dog during this time. Your German Shepherd Has Heatstroke Heatstroke is another common reason that a dog might pant more than usual. Heatstroke Is often caused by a dog doing too much activity outdoors when it is hot. Of course, a German Shepherd is a likely candidate for heatstroke due to their size and coat mentioned above. If you notice your Shepherd panting for an extended period after having been out in the heat, give him water to drink and place him in a shaded area straight away. If your dog has heatstroke, you should take them to see a vet once they have cooled down. Your German Shepherd Has Heart Problems If your German Shepherd has begun panting more than usual, then their is the possibility that they are suffering from a health issue. Usually, if this is the case it is a heart problem. German Shepherds are big dogs with powerful physiques, so you will hear them pant as a means of regulating their body temperature. Shepherds have double coats, which keeps them feeling hotter for longer. Loud and sudden sounds frighten the most nonchalant of us, so it hardly surprising that a German Shepherd would become frightened, causing them to pant. Fear will cause your German Shepherd to pant; this is normal. You should be concerned if the panting is sudden, deeper, and more extended than usual, particularly if your dog has no reason to pant. Here are some other things to look out for an when your dogs panting is more of a cause for concern: The temperature is cold — especially if your German Shepherd has not expended much energy. Excessive thirst and urination — coupled with panting means that your dog is not holding onto enough water. Panting is usually nothing to worry about, but it still indicates your dog is attempting to regulate their body temperature. It usually means that they are too hot, and their trying to cool down. The following are practical ways that you can support your dog and help them feel more comfortable during bouts of panting. Always make sure that they can do this on their own accord and never leave them outside in the heat of the day without the ability to cool off. Be cognizant of any steep hills or challenging landscapes too. This works particularly well if they are already very hot, and are in need of a wash anyway! Comfort Your Dog If your dog is panting heavily even if it is not hot or they are not exercising, it could be a sign that they are anxious, are in pain, or even stressed. In this situation, spend some time calming your dog. Give them a good stroke and divert their attention away from what ever is causing issues. Usually, their breathing will quickly return to a normal pace. Investigate The Environment, Monitor Meals Panting can be a sign that your dog has consumed something they do not agree with. Equally, they may have rubbed against something they are allergic to. Check all the foods in which you dog has eaten, and check up on areas your dog has been to ensure there is not something that has caused the panting. German Shepherds need at least one hour of exercise each day, to keep him fit, healthy, and to reduce panting. This is particularly effective in the summer months, or when you may be looking to increase their activity on a walking holiday for example. You can do this by using a de-shedding brush. The FURminator is one of the best brushes out there on the market. You can get it for a great price on Amazon and many German Shepherd owners swear by it. There are many videos available online demonstrating how to use the de-shedding brush correctly. Finally It is usual for German Shepherds to pant and even more so than other breeds. For the most part it does mean that your dog is hot and is attempting to cool down. As an owner, you need to remember that your German Shepherd has a thick double coat and they are a large breed of dog. Never make them overexert themselves or push them beyond their natural capacities. Equally, panting is not a sound that anyone particularly enjoys, but it is natural in dogs and this breed. It is never something you should look to stop. By putting a muzzle on your dog or yelling at them to stop, you will stress them out and cause further issues with overheating. Thankfully though, there are other things you can do to make your German Shepherd feel more comfortable and reduce their need to panting. If these things do not work, or you notice anything abnormal, its advised to take your dog for an examination at the vet. Excessive panting can mean something more serious — so you should be vigilant and better safe than sorry. Pekingese Boston terrier Because of their short muzzles, these breeds have shorter or flattened throats and breathing passages, which can make them have breathing problems, including excessive panting at night. Check for signs of inadequate oxygen, like turning blue or purple cyanosis as this constitutes a veterinary emergency. Anxiety Panting at night is just one of the many signs of anxiety in dogs. This type of behavioral panting has nothing to do with feeling overheated; it's just how their body is reacting to a stressful situation if your dog has anxiety. These are the common causes of anxiety in dogs: Noises: Dogs have much better hearing than you do. Something that's loud to you can be incredibly loud to your pet, so loud noises can give your dog anxiety. For example, if you've ever burned food in the oven and your smoke detector went off, your dog might get anxious every time you cook because they're afraid of the loud noise your cooking caused last time. Dogs also commonly are afraid of storms and fireworks because they're loud, and your dog doesn't know where the sound is coming from or how to get away from it. Luckily, there are products on the market that can help soothe your pet during times of stress. You may even choose to talk to your vet about anxiety medication for stressful situations. Separation anxiety: Separation occurs when you leave your dog alone in the home after being used to you being around for a majority of the day. Many dogs get separation anxiety, but you can help train your pet to stay calm while you're gone with behavioral training, which can help them relax when you're not around. Changes to home environment: As we've discussed, a new environment can be stressful for dogs because they're creatures of habit. Changing your dog's environment can cause anxiety for a short period of time, but eventually, your pet should get used to your new home. Dogs that are adopted may be more anxious than dogs that have been raised in the same home since puppyhood. Dogs that have gone through multiple homes and shelters typically don't feel like they have a home until their new owner proves it to them. New dogs can be anxious because of a new environment and new people. Generalized anxiety: Panic attacks: 4. Anemia Another common reason why your dog is panting at night is anemia. Anemia is when the number of red blood cells decreases either by destruction, loss, or lack of production. Anemia causes an increased heart rate, which can make your dog start panting. When you work out and increase your own heart rate, you begin breathing heavily; the same thing happens to your dog when their heart rate increases. Dogs with anemia typically have energy loss, weakness, and a loss of appetite, along with panting and an increased heart rate. Age Many senior dogs pant at night for a number of reasons, which can include health conditions like anemia and Cushing's disease. Older dogs can also suffer from cognitive dysfunction, which disrupts their sleep-wake cycle, causing them to be restless at night. Older dogs may also be more anxious because they're not able to move around as much, or they may experience pain when walking or standing. Combined with changes to their daily life, dogs can become stressed more easily as they get older, which may result in panting. Heart Disease Dogs with heart disease and heart failure pant more because their heart is working harder to pump oxygen throughout the body. Rapid breathing is just one indication of heart failure in dogs because of fluid buildup in the lungs. Dogs can get heart disease from heartworms or heartworm disease, so it's important to keep your dog protected by getting heartworm prevention medication from your vet. Luckily, heartworm is both preventable and can be treated if it's caught early. Obesity Just like in humans, obesity can lead to a wide range of health complications for dogs, including heavier breathing at panting. Dogs with obesity typically suffer from arthritis, heart problems, and joint problems. Obesity causes excessive panting because your dog is working harder to do everyday activities, which means exerting more energy and increasing their heart rate. It's important to feed your dog a well-balanced diet and exercise them daily. You can usually tell if your pet has gained a little weight, but many pet owners don't know how much their dogs should weigh. If you're not sure how much your pet should weigh, you can consult a vet who can help you find the right diet for your pet and help you maintain or lose their weight. Pain Dogs in pain have a higher heart rate, which can lead to faster, heavier breathing and panting at night. Pain can come from internal problems, such as a disease or illness, or external problems, like a hurt paw from jumping off the couch. If you notice your dog is in pain, seek the help of a veterinarian immediately. For example, if your dog is limping and panting, they may require a trip to the emergency vet for a potential sprain or broken bone. Unfortunately, you can't see every injury, but your dog can be in pain whether it's visible or not. Clear indications your dog is in pain is panting accompanied by yelping or avoidance when you try to touch them in a certain area or reluctance to move. For example, if your dog has allergies, your vet might prescribe them allergy medication, while if your pet has anxiety, they might benefit from behavioral training or behavioral medication to help them calm down. If your dog is panting because they're hot, you can cool them down with a wet cloth, offer them cold water or an ice cube, or turn the air conditioning up for a few minutes. For more serious reasons why your dog is panting at night, you should always consult your vet. If your dog is panting due to heart disease or pain, your pet will benefit from medication and treatment. Final Notes Your dog could be panting at night for a variety of reasons. However, it's always best not to panic. Unless your dog has been diagnosed with a medical condition, they're likely panting because they're too warm or they have anxiety. In most cases, you'll be able to rule out whether your dog is panting due to heatstroke or their genetics easily. In other cases, panting at night might be an indicator of a serious physical health condition. When it comes to your dog, remember you know them best. Always use your best judgment to help you determine when it's time to take them to the vet. For example, if your dog pants excessively every night and your home isn't warm, a vet might be able to tell you if they're suffering from a serious physicalmedical condition. Luckily, you don't have to leave your home to get quality advice from a professional. Dutch offers non-emergency telemedicine for pets that can help you uncover the cause of your dog panting at night. Whether your dog is suffering from anxiety, allergies, or anything else, you can talk to a licensed veterinarian who can help you stop your dog's panting and make them happier and more comfortable. As always, if you're worried about your pet and believe their panting at night is an emergency, take them to the nearest emergency vet as soon as possible. Panting is the primary way that all dogs cool themself down aside from sweating through their paws. The vast majority of panting can be explained by one of the causes above. If anything is causing your German Shepherd to be stressed either temporarily or chronically then excessive panting might be something you see on a daily basis. Many things can cause your GSD to be stressed or anxious, from being left alone too long, insufficient stimulation , and even in response to your personal feelings and emotions on any given day. Fortunately, it comes with additional signs to look out for aside from excessive panting. You may notice your GSD to have a bright red tongue, very thick or sticky saliva, weakness, and difficulty moving, lethargy, and may experience diarrhea or vomiting. If you notice any of these symptoms along with panting in hot weather, call your veterinarian as soon as you can, and in the meantime encourage him to drink water. Allergies German Shepherds can suffer from a range of allergies that can cause panting. Allergies can be dietary and food-related or they could be from allergens such as pollen, dust, mites, certain fabric conditioners, washing powders, or even perfumes. If your German Shepherd has any known allergies this could very well be the cause. So how do you know if something is wrong? These are important questions you are likely asking. But please take your time to consider the situation and recent events before calling your veterinarian. Consider the many situations when panting can be expected as outlined near the top and think about the recent events leading up to when you noticed the panting. Another common question is when it comes to puppies. This leads to a lot of ups and downs with their panting volume. And even this, under the right circumstances, would be considered fast, but still normal. Thank you for reading! In fact, it might seem like they pant too much. Fear not! Why does your German Shepherd pant so much though? Instead, dogs pant to cool off — a process known as thermoregulation. As a large dog with a thick coat, your German Shepherd will have a more difficult time cooling down and will need to pant more. But there are other reasons too. The 8 Likely Causes of German Shepherd Panting Most panting will be your German Shepherd trying to cool down, but there are sometimes other reasons they pant a lot. These include anxiety, being overheated, or just not feeling well. Because they have double coats, it will be easier for your German Shepherd to get hot. Image Credit: Pixabay 2. Heatstroke occurs when your pet has been active in extremely hot temperatures and can happen to any dog breed, but due to their thick coats and large size, German Shepherds are at greater risk. How can you tell if your dog is suffering from heatstroke? Other signs of heatstroke can include lethargy, thick sticky saliva, vomiting, and a bright red tongue. If you notice any of these, take your pet to a cooler, shaded area and give them water. They Just Finished Being Active German Shepherds have a lot of energy; they typically require at least two hours of exercise a day. However, if this panting lasts for a longer amount of time than is normal, you may want to speak to your vet. Likewise, if your dog is panting more even after short bursts of activity, it may be a sign that something is wrong. German Shepherd Excited Panting Maybe your German Shepherd is meeting a new person and is happy to have made a new friend. All that jumping and wriggling counts as activity, and they need to get more oxygen to their muscles. Image Credit: Pixabay 5. If your dog has become stressed, it may be panting more than usual. Heart disease can manifest symptoms such as the onset of excessive panting. Other signs of heart problems include a swollen belly, loss of appetite, and paler gums than usual. German Shepherd Normal vs. Abnormal Panting Since German Shepherds do pant more than other breeds, how can you tell whether yours is panting an average amount or not? If your dog has been running about or has been outside in the heat, short amounts of panting are normal. Other signs to look for to tell whether your pet is alright are the temperature panting more in hot weather is expected , lethargy, extreme thirst, and hair loss. Another good way to help your pup stay cool is by removing their undercoat with a deshedding brush. This technique is particularly beneficial during the summer months. If it seems this is the case, try offering them some comfort. By giving them your company and some good pets, you may distract them from whatever is bothering them, helping their breathing return to normal. This can help you figure out if it is indeed a reaction and whether you need to go to the vet. Other common causes can be excitement, fear, anxiety, heatstroke, heart problems, or illness in general. The main thing you should know is how to differentiate between normal and abnormal amounts of panting by examining their recent activity and surroundings. Featured Image Credit: Pixabay. March 13, at pm Charlotte- I just read your comment and as the previous owner of a little tiny Yorkie, I wanted to reach out to you. This is a real disorder, its not really common but I think there are things you can do to help prevent it. I only know about it because I recently realized my current terrier mix has started suffering from choking issues, but only when he drinks water- I noticed it has become an issue now that he has put on more weight. Every time he went to get a drink he would begin coughing and hacking after. It became so irritating that he actually avoided having to take a drink. Well I regret it. I should have brought her for a second opinion. Long story short she developed Kidney failure and I had to do a lot to keep her alive and keep her hydrated- it was extremely hard! She ended up passing away of a seizure during sunset Memorial Day .But I read that untreated Cushings and untreated high blood pressure will lead to kidneys failing. So it takes a HUGE toll on their little tiny bodies. She went from eating like a normal picky eating Yorkie, to suddenly begging for food ALL the time. She was ravenous!
