For the black American Bulldog, the first locus where a decision has to be made is the E locus. Here, the decision of whether black pigment eumelanin will be allowed production is made. If there is at least one dominant gene found on the E locus, eumelanin will be produced. Next stop — the K locus. Black is the dominant color on the K locus, but the black in the American Bulldog is not produced by it. Two recessive genes are required for the decision to be passed onto the A locus. Keep in mind that a brindle American Bulldog has a brindle allele on the K locus, which is the second most dominant gene on it. From A To B Since the most common colors and patterns in the breed are determined by the A locus, the black American Bulldog has to carry two recessive genes on it. Usually, it would be white and some other marking color or fawn, but a recessive pairing is required for the full black coat. Thanks to the wide variety of interactions of the A locus with other loci, we see different patterns and colors in most American Bulldogs. One dominant gene B is enough to tip the scale in the favor of eumelanin, giving the dog a solid black coat. Not many American Bulldog breeders will breed dogs with solid black coats. Since it is not desirable for a show dog to be fully black due to the breed being predominantly white the rule is that at least fifteen percent white is required to be able to participate in conformation events. If the breeder does have black American Bulldogs, then a DNA test to rule out genetic diseases is necessary. Indeed, it is a steep price, but the amount of dog you are getting is more than worth it. Always be mindful of ads selling American Bulldog puppies for ridiculously low or high prices. This is most often the mark of a backyard breeder or a puppy mill. This is particularly the case for French Bulldog puppies, as they are the most wanted designer dog breed in the US. Another thing to note is that a black American Bulldog is not eligible for conformation shows. The Pitbull is a mix of the American Staffordshire Terrier and various other breeds from the terrier family of dogs. On the other hand, the American Bulldog is considered to be a purebred dog that has its roots in the mix of the English Bulldog and domestic dogs from the US south. Summary Having reached the end, I only have two things to say. Black American Bulldogs are incredible dogs. Despite the breed standards, color should not play a major role in its temperament. Breeding dogs with recessive genes is a concern, but largely unfounded and lacking concrete evidence in the case of recessive black genes. But when it comes to colors our favorite color combination is a white dog with red patches but a white dog with black patches is probably a close second. Kraken above looks black but when you take a loot at his coat it has some brindle in it. The existence of Black American Bulldogs is nothing new, many breeders have experimented over the years with infusing black into the bulldogs, mostly with the standard type infusing pit bull blood. History of the Black American Bulldog We have been involved with the breed since and have discussed this many times over the years. If you like black and want black go for it but if you want a correct American Bulldog to breed and show you are much better off getting an American Bulldog that is white with patches of brindle, red or fawn or a dog with a brindle, red or fawn body suit. Needless to say, with such a mix in her background, Doug produced Black as well as Blue American Bulldogs when line breeding down from her. Konferderate Kennels Don Matthews Another Kennel know to have infused Pit Bull into his program to produce black dogs is Konfederate Kennels, who also breeds Staffy Bulls, perhaps they too are in there? Joe Painter Also, a bit player in the early history of the American Bulldog, Joe painter was rumored to go to the pound and adopt anything resembling an American Bulldog, and then sell them as such, again, there could of been a multitude of breeds and colors in their background. So there you have it, Black American Bulldogs do exist, most registries do not accept them as an acceptable color, and if you want a true representation of what an American Bulldog is best to choose from the myriad options in the color palette that is acceptable. Boxer Barking Overview This breed is rambunctious and vocal during the puppy years and adult Boxers are capable of very deep barking. Most Boxers make for excellent watch dogs, so do expect some territorial barking in regard to certain triggers. However, excessive barking should be addressed as soon as it starts, otherwise things can get out of control. Many owners wonder how much barking is normal and why it seems that a Boxer will bark for no apparent reason. Though dealing with barking may seem overwhelming, luckily, once you understand all of the possible causes some you may have never thought of action can be taken and training can begin to correct your dog's behavior. So let's dive in to understand this issue and see if and when you can take steps to control this. Many people are aware that a dog's hearing is much more keen than a humans. How much more? A Boxer can hear detect noises that you will never be able to hear; these will be those of a higher frequency. Noises can be heard at frequencies approximately twice the range of humans. They will hear anything up to 60Hz compared to humans top capacity of 20Hz. Hz stands for Hertz; and 1 Hertz equals 1 vibration per each second. Also, a Boxer will pick up on noises that originate at a further distance than the human ear can detect. Therefore, when your dog is barking loudly and seems to be on alert, there is a good chance that they are detecting an unfamiliar noise and associating it with potential danger. Training Solution. The Boxer makes for a very good watch dog. It is wise to not dismiss barking in the case that your dog may be displaying correct behavior in attempting to warn you. If you quiet your dog down each time he tries to warn you, this may backfire. If your dog eventually learns that barking to warn you is un-wanted behavior, you may find yourself with a silent dog while an unwanted "guest" is breaking into your home. Appreciate this type of bark. When your Boxer barks, take a look around the home and outside. If there is indeed a stranger walking by or on your property, even if it is the neighbor retrieving something from your yard, let your dog know that you appreciate the warning. It is your actions and reactions that will show your Boxer that their barking is unwarranted. This is done by gently patting him or her; not in a reward action, but in a calming motion. The tone of your voice must be calm and relaxed, as you give your Boxer a pre-planned command word. The most common and effective word is "Shh" or "Calm Down". The command should be short. Dogs only pay attention to the first syllable of words. If you make your command a long sentence, you will confuse your Boxer and be speaking to no one. Self protection barking will ensue when a dog feels that his belongings are in danger. A dog can become very attached to his toys, dog bed, blankets or other objects that he uses daily. Your dog's things should not be rearranged or bothered with, other than to clean them. A Boxer will also become protective of his food and water. The eating area should quiet and out of the way of foot traffic. Boredom is often the cause of barking and whining problems ; many owners falsely assume that a dog leads a simple life and does not need stimulation and socialization like humans do. Most often these 2 elements will combine. However a dog will feel neglected or bored if: He is left alone for long periods of time He is not taken outside for a good burst of exercise at least once per day He is not receiving interaction with humans, such as play Interactive and interesting toys are not available Training Solution. There should be a daily schedule that your dog can depend on. This should include daily walks, exercise , play and interaction with his owner or owners. If you go for walks each day, spend some time throwing a ball to him, wrestle around, give him baths, groom him and talk to him while you go about your business in the home, he will receive the stimuli that is needed. This is best if a certain time is chosen for each activity. For example, a walk in the morning and a half hour of fetch every evening 1 or 2 hours after dinner. Once he is internally satisfied that he is receiving attention and can count on interaction and exercise, a dog will usually be more than happy to settle down at other times to play with his toys or just relax. Having a great selection of toys is vital for all but the oldest of senior dogs; these are not just for pups. Dogs of all ages should have interesting and interactive toys. Kongs and others that hold treats hidden inside can keep a dog busy for hours. Illness or Injury When a dog barks or bites and this behavior is completely out of their normal behavior, it may be because the dog is in pain. Canines often feel vulnerable when weak and will act out in this way. She has a genetic condition called MegaEsophagus. Her throat does not push food down to her stomach. To help her eat, Mia must sit in a "Bailey Chair" to eat softened food. She must then sit for 30 minutes while gravity works its magic. Mia knows her chair and her routine. Mia must also drink from an elevated water dish. If she eats in any different way, she will likely regurgitate and may aspirate. Due to her condition, she underwent a gastroplexy with her spay. This means you will never have to worry about bloat with Mia. With attention to detail, Mia can live a long happy life. She will reward you with a kind heart and dedication. Mia is whip smart. Mia has basic obedience down and would shine in good citizen and advanced obedience classes. Mia's chair and supplies will come with her. He has been with his foster since June .He is heartworm negative and up to date with his vetting, including neuter. Moe gets along great with dogs. Although Moe has not been tested with children. We have no reason to believe that he would be a problem with them. We are not sure about cats. She was an owner surrender because she was not very nice to the feral kitties in the neighborhood. We will not place her in a home with cats. Nova is great with dogs and children. She is a lovely girl in the home, content to lay at your feet as you work or relax. We, and our Frenchies, love the Nylabones — they are made of very durable nylon that will last forever, and our dogs love to chew on them, which is very good for their teeth and gums. One of our favorite toys is braided rope made especially for dogs. Our dogs and puppies have a ball playing tug-a-war and keep-a-way with them. They are very inexpensive they can even be found in most dollar stores and they are extremely durable. The point is to have a nice selection of toys to keep them entertained and out of trouble. Make sure that their toys do not have little parts they could chew off that could get stuck in their throats. Dog shampoo — There are many good dog shampoos on the market and it is really just a matter of personal preference. They can be purchased at any pet store, Walmart, etc. Years ago, when we owned a Yorkie, our vet recommended using baby shampoo because Yorkies tend to frequently get goop around the eyes and the baby shampoo allowed us to clean the area around their eyes without irritating them. We still use baby shampoo with our Frenchies since they have lots of folds on their faces that require regular cleaning. If you do go with a dog shampoo choose a mild formulated shampoo for sensitive skin; your vet may have some good recommendations. In addition to having several good chew toys, which are great for their teeth, you should apply toothpaste to their teeth and gums on a weekly basis. You will notice that it said apply and not brush. Doggie toothpaste has those enzymes. Just put some paste on your finger or a brush and rub it on the teeth and gums. We highly recommend using the kind that has a flat blade on the end of the raking tool versus the kind that has prongs. What we find works best for us is to use a 5 gallon bucket with a lid that is lined with a durable trash bag. The lid keeps foul odors trapped inside. Until our dogs are potty trained, we use old, soft towels and blankets for their bedding, which are very easy to launder. Though it is not a necessity, our dogs love their over-sized pillows and they spend a lot of time sleeping and lounging around on them. We have one that we bought at Petsmart that is 25 inches tall made of durable plastic which is collapsible, fairly light, and easy to set up. If you have a small room in your house such as a laundry room that is puppy proof, you may not need one; however, puppy pens are very practical for many who want to control their precious Frenchie puppy, while at the same time give it some freedom. Because it is is transportable unlike a laundry room , we like to set it up in our main room not on carpet where they can see all that is going on around them and we can see them. We like to keep a soft blanket or towel at one end and their pee pad at the other. Doggie gate same concept as a baby gate — There may initially be areas in your house that you may not want your puppy having free access to roam until completely potty trained. Putting up a doggie gate s will allow your puppy to have a larger area to investigate without getting on carpeted areas or another area you want to make off limits. You can find cute accessories and outfits at pet stores, and there are lots of options on line. Some people do not feel comfortable clipping their dogs nails and will take them to a groomer or vet. However, if you want to save time and money it is a fairly simple task that takes only a few minutes. There are two types of of clippers: a guillotine or a scissor type. The guillotine is the easiest to use. The instructions that come with the clippers will guide you on how to use the instrument. Light claws are easier to cut than dark claws as the blood vessels and nerves that supply the toenail, called the quick, is easier to see. Cut the toenail to within approximately 2 mm of the quick. If you cut into the quick, the toenail will bleed and the dog will experience pain, nothing serious, but they might not sit too still the next time you undertake this task. When cutting dark toenails, it is better to cut just a little off at a time.
