So, I make sure that each individual pup is given outstanding care. How do I do this? I began with hand raising each one of my pups the first 3 weeks of its life. What do I mean by hand raise my pup? It means I personally make sure each individual pup is fed every 2 hours- 24 hours a day, the first 2 weeks of its life. At feeding time, I make sure each puppy gets on a nipple so they don't have to struggle to find one. I make sure that each puppy gets an adequate amount of milk. Then, once I see that they have been well fed. I pick up one pup at a time and have the mom lick it to go potty. And then I put them in their little crib to ensure they are safe and not smooth by the mother until the next feeding 2 hours later. At three weeks, we feed the pups every 4 hours. But at this point, even though the pups eyes and ears are open. I still supervise the feeding to ensure that each pup is adequately fed and again not smothered by it's mother. I believe in giving these pups outstanding care. Even if that means that I lose a lot of sleep, and even if it ends up just saving one pups life. That one pup could be the next Labrador that I get a testimony about how it brought so much joy into one person's life! So, in the end, all the work and lack of sleep is worth it. An appointment can be made to view the left-over puppies when they are 10 weeks old, and no sooner. Homemade Diets Research has shown that in the past, poorly balanced homemade diets have been harmful to German Shepherd puppies. There is now abundant information available to anyone who is willing and able to produce a safe and balanced diet. However, modern cases studies have shown that well-meaning owners may still over-feed or create an unbalanced diet. So, this is an area where you really can have too much of a good thing. As with commercial foods, homemade diets must be properly formulated for a large breed dog. Do not deviate from recommended recipes as provided by a veterinarian. If possible, preferably a vet with a board certification in veterinary nutrition. Recipes published in popular magazine and websites may not be nutritionally complete or suitable for a large breed puppy. Is My Puppy the Right Weight? However, keep in mind that some dogs will be unusually small or large but still be perfectly healthy. Do not try to maximize growth rates as this can lead to health problems later. My Puppy Is Still Hungry If your puppy seems excessively hungry provide more frequent but smaller meals. Young puppies cannot tolerate going without food for extended periods. With older puppies you may wish to experiment with foods that help them feel more full, and provide low calories treats. Keeping a health puppy active and occupied will help prevent them from becoming overly focused on anticipating their next meal. Split that daily amount up between all meals. For example, if your 3-month-old GSD puppy is a male and weighs 30 pounds, you should feed him approximately 2 cups per day. Since she no longer needs the extra calories to help support her fast growth period, you can safely reduce her feedings to 2 or 3 meals per day. While she should still be eating puppy food at this point, you may consider purchasing a bag of her eventual adult formula. You can use individual kibbles from the adult formula for treats or training rewards. This will help her get used to the new flavor and texture. Around 9 months of age, you can begin slowly adding a small amount of the adult formula into her puppy food, though she should still be eating primarily puppy chow. Only your vet will be able to tell you when your dog has reached maturity and can be safely moved to adult food. So, make sure you are in close contact with your vet to be sure that your feeding plan is individualized for your specific dog. Adult dog food will have a different ratio of calcium, protein, phosphorus, and other nutrients than puppy food does. Feeding an adult dog a puppy formula can cause obesity as well as put too much strain on kidneys and other vital organs. Long term use of inappropriate food for an adult dog can have catastrophic consequences. That said, there is no need to panic if your adult GSD eats a bowl of puppy food now and then. Adult German Shepherds should be fed twice a day. Again, bloat is a real problem for large breed dogs, and large meals seem to be a big cause of this. Older dogs also tend to slow down their digestion, so an increase in fiber might be a good choice for your senior GSD. Do be sure to confirm this with your vet, however. Not all foods are created equal. For treats, senior dogs should avoid calorie-dense milk bones and high-salt or fatty treats. Opt for healthy, whole-food treats such as apple slices or carrots. Some senior dogs begin to develop health conditions that will require special care. This is often a result of poor nutrition early in life, but can sometimes simply be genetics and old age catching up with them. But for GSDs with health issues such as kidney disease and joint pain, diet can play an even bigger role in the quality of their lives. Getting a personalized recommendation from your veterinarian is worth the time, expense, and effort. These charts can seem pretty straightforward at first glance. Instead, use them as a starting point. Observe your dog, see how he looks and feels, and note any changes in his bathroom habits, weight, or energy level. Adjust his meals accordingly. Generally speaking, they talk about daily intake, not per meal. It means to split that 3 cups total over the entire day. If your dog eats 3 times per day, that would be 1 cup at each meal for a total daily intake of 3 cups. To further confuse dog parents, some manufacturers do list per-meal serving sizes, not the total daily intake! In these cases, if you read it incorrectly, you would end up underfeeding your dog. Puppies are usually fully formed at around day 58, meaning that labour can happen at any time. Labour in dogs occurs in three separate stages: Stage one: The uterus begins to contract, but there will be no outward sign of this. The mother will be restless, may lose her appetite as well as vomiting and panting. This lasts between 12 and 24 hours. Stage two: Lasting up to 24 hours, this is when the puppies will begin to be born. Sultan worked successfully with a woman in Hawaii. Other breeders saw the merit of crossing these two breeds, and the Labradoodle quickly rose in popularity like its Labrador Retriever parent. These dogs are often produced by crossing a Labrador Retriever with a Poodle, but multigenerational breeding has begun in an attempt to produce a viable and recognizable breed. The Australian Labradoodle Association and the International Australian Labradoodle Association are taking steps to move this designer breed into registered breed status in the next few years. These groups have made great efforts to bring breeders together so that they are working to achieve the same standards through multigenerational breeding. Labradoodle Size The Labradoodle comes in three size variations, depending on the size of the Poodle used for the first-generation breeding. The three sizes are Standard, Medium, and Miniature. Let your Labradoodle Puppy Explore the Yard The yard is a great way to introduce your puppy to the great outdoors. They will also get used to walking on different types of surfaces such as your tiled, wet lawn or open flower beds. To get them there, here is a quick exercise you can run through: Exploring different surfaces exercise Have plenty of treats ready. Only use safe surfaces, nothing too slippery. Gather surfaces such as: A piece of carpet A large tray with a thin layer of water A large piece of tin foil or cardboard, something that makes a noise. Put the surfaces out on the floor and let your puppy investigate. Let them take their time and go at their own pace. In our experience Labradoodles are quite food motivated, and you can probably use a low or medium value treat for this. Teach your puppy their name One of the first things your puppy will learn from you is their name. Fortunately, teaching a Labradoodle puppy their name is rather simple. Pretty easy, right? Practice this a few times everyday until they start flipping their head at you every time you call their name. Make sure everyone in the family uses the same name too! Teach your puppy to sit Labradoodle training is often started by teaching them how to sit. We call this a marker word. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow with a tasty treat. Bits of smelly sausage or cheese will definitely do the trick. If this happens, try to keep it simple at first and just use their own kibble if they are motivated to work for it. Save the big guns in treat terms for when you really need it! How to do it Always begin training at home. The outside world is far too exciting at the moment, and your puppy will probably not focus on you. Stand in front of your pup with a treat in your hand and place the treat on their nose, then bring it up to your waist. Recall — How to teach your Labradoodle puppy to come back when called Your puppy should have a good grasp of their name by now, which should make recall training pretty straightforward. Pun intended. How to do it You will need plenty of those high value treats and your best cheery voice. Call your puppy only once! This is super important as you want them to learn that their name only has to be called once for them to react to it. How to do it Get your puppy excited by showing them their favorite toy and making it come to life by waving it around. Once they are interested in the toy, throw it a short distance away from you. With that lovely singing voice of yours, encourage them to bring it back to you. When they do, swap the toy in their mouth for another identical toy. Repeat about 5 times and practice everyday. Prevention of Resource Guarding This part of Labradoodle training is important — it will prevent resource guarding by teaching your puppy how to give up items willingly. Resource guarding is this thing that happens when dogs are unwilling to give up items back, or when they get protective over something from humans or other dogs. German Shepherd care German Shepherd puppy diet: newborn For a German Shepherd puppy to develop and grow properly, it is imperative that they first nurse on their mother's milk. The first milk they receive is a protein and antibody-rich type of milk known as colostrum. This gives the puppy's immune and central nervous systems a boost. Likewise, if your dog has a wheat allergy, he should not eat noodles. One other thing to watch for is that dried noodles often contain a high amount of salt sodium , so you will need to check this first. Japenese ramen noodles are loaded with sodium or flavored with soy sauce, and you should not feed these to your dog. Oatmeal German Shepherds can eat oatmeal. This staple food is high in fiber and loaded with nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Oatmeal is also a great alternative if your German Shepherd is sensitive to grains or wheat, although, contrary to popular belief, food allergies in dogs are rare. Peanuts German Shepherds can eat one or two plain unsalted peanuts as they are rich in healthy unsaturated fats and fiber and many vitamins and minerals. However, you must not forget about their high-fat content, which can cause your dog to have a stomach upset as fat is harder to digest. Technically speaking, peanuts are legumes, similar to peas and lentils, as they grow in pods that mature beneath the ground. However, for nutritional and culinary purposes, peanuts are considered nuts! Peanuts are also high in calories, and you must also consider the general risks of choking. Peanut Butter German Shepherds can eat peanut butter as it is a nutritionally well-rounded treat containing protein, healthy fats, and fiber. It also has various minerals, including iron, magnesium, zinc, and vitamin E and B vitamins, and is a good source of folic acid. Ensure the brand you buy is organic, with nothing added. Some brands contain xylitol sweetener , and you must avoid these as xylitol is toxic to dogs, so ensure you carefully check the label. As peanut butter is a high-value treat, it is ideal during training sessions. However, it is high in calories and fat, so feed sparingly. Peas Peas are good for boosting energy levels as they are starchy carbohydrates. They are good for the eyes, heart, and skin and contain vitamins such as vitamin A, K, and B. Peas also contain iron, zinc, magnesium, potassium, and fiber. I think peas are an excellent human food that you can easily add to your GSDs bowl at mealtimes. Fresh or frozen peas are okay. However, avoid the canned variety due to their high salt content. Pineapple German Shepherds can eat pineapple. Frozen pineapple chunks make an excellent treat in warm weather and help keep your GSD hydrated, but do not feed canned pineapple due to its high sugar content. This fruit is also ideal if your dog needs a quick energy boost during periods of intense activity. You should remove all fat as too much fat can lead to an upset stomach and inflammation of the pancreas. Pork bones are also a choking risk. Processed pork meats such as bacon, ham, and sausage, should also not be given to your dog due to their high salt content. Potato Cooked German Shepherds can eat potatoes. This starchy vegetable is packed with nutrients and contains many vitamins, minerals, and fiber, including vitamin C, B6, and potassium, to fight disease and aid digestion. They provide lots of energy as a high carbohydrate food, so feed sparingly. When giving potatoes to your dog, you should remove the skin and cook them. Also, you must not provide raw potato or if the potato is green on the outside as it contains solanine which is a toxic compound; however, the cooking process removes this danger. Pumpkin German Shepherds can eat pumpkin, including the seeds. Pumpkin is better cooked as your dog will have difficulty digesting it raw. Rice German Shepherds can eat plain white rice. As sweet potatoes are a starchy carbohydrate, they are probably best avoided if your dog is overweight, less active, or diabetic. Sweet potatoes should be cooked and the skin removed before feeding to your German Shepherd. You can bake, mash, or puree them. Due to their nutritional value, they are a popular source of carbohydrates in high-quality dog foods. Tuna also contains many healthy vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, B12, B6, iron, potassium, magnesium, and antioxidants. There is often mixed opinion as to whether dogs should eat tuna due to its higher levels of mercury compared to other fish; however, as with most human foods you give to your German Shepherd, moderation is key. Longer living fish species such as mackerel and tuna may contain high amounts of mercury, so feed sparingly — if you opt for these types. Seeds or pits must be removed from fruit such as nectarines, peaches, and plums as they contain toxic cyanide traces. The pits are also a choking hazard. Most vegetables should be cooked as most dogs will find them easier to digest. However, some can be given raw such as carrots and green beans.
