Over a dozen years ago, we fell in love with Doodles when our youngest son raised a Doodle puppy to be a future service dog as part of his Eagle Scout Project. In the blink of an eye, we welcomed Luke, a shaggy doodle puppy into our home and hearts and my son spent a year taking this sweet boy with us everywhere. This was our introduction to Doodles and we were smitten - low shedding, low allergen, affectionate and Muppet cute. We set about learning all we could about responsible breeding practices, canine health and longevity, canine genetics, inheritable diseases and their prevention and very importantly the best methods of puppy raising to shape future temperament. During our deep dive into all things Doodle, we considered many breeds, including Goldendoodles and Labradoodles. We wanted a medium size since not all veterans had large homes and yards. We prioritized health, trainability, intelligence and friendliness. And of course we needed to ensure we had the low allergen, low shedding qualities that would make them easy to live with and take into restaurants and retail establishments. We loved the Goldendoodle puppy we raised, but his energy level was high and Goldens and Labs are know for maturing slowly, essentially staying a puppy until they are a year or two years old. The puppies are held everyday and weight checks are done regularly to ensure they are gaining weight and thriving. Every puppy in addition to mom is loved on and nurtured every day. We follow and utilize three methods of early neurological stimulation and handling for our puppies, timed to coincide with specific periods in the puppies life where they are most receptive to it. This method utilizes tactile and thermal stimulation and 3 positioning exercises, done once daily when the puppies are days old. When puppies receive consistent, non-traumatic handling, they become more outgoing and friendly and show less inclination to be fearful when they are older. This encourages the puppies development into an emotionally balanced mature dog and ultimately a better family companion for you. The fact that breeders have the ability to influence the health of their puppies into adulthood for their future families is a game changer. We raise chickens and ducks using fermented organic feed, sprouted barley and fresh scraps from our garden so our canines have the very best natural eggs for their meals. They are generally much cheaper, and it is always a bonus to give a pup home. The blend of the Boston Terrier with the English Bulldog is not as popular and harder to find in a shelter. Make sure when you are purchasing a Boston Bulldog from a breeder that you check out the health of the parent pups. Ask to see veterinary reports and evidence of health checks. No reputable breeder will refuse this, especially. Any English Bulldog mix is going to be gassy. The anatomy of the English Bulldog is to blame for this, unfortunately, although their diet can play a role as well. Bulldogs fart excessively because they tend to have highly sensitive stomachs. Their digestive system does not digest food well and causes consistently upset stomachs. Instead of having a longer muzzle, they have flatter faces that make it difficult for them to eat at a consistent pace. They tend to eat quickly and improperly, taking in far too much air at the same time as their food. Diet factors into their farty behavior as well. All the muscle hides a sensitive soul. They are a pup of averages between the two parent breeds in their build, energy levels, and health. Even though they are agile, they still have a more muscular build than other dogs that share a similar height. Even with the muscles, English Boston-Bulldogs have sensitive souls. The tender-hearted dogs are alert to the emotions running in the air around them and should be treated with patience. Being left alone for extended amounts of time leads to sadness and sometimes even depression. Although these dogs can have a stubborn streak, remember their sensitivity during training. You will get the best response out of them with a firm hand coupled with patience and kindness. Even with a mutually bloody past, the blend of these two dogs makes for a mellow companion. Unlike breeds like the Pit Bull or Rottweiler, however, they have lost most of the aggressive reputation that typically comes with a bloody past. Most of this is because of their sweet dispositions. The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds developed in America. They came from breeds that were pit fighter dogs originating in Boston, Massachusetts. These dogs were made to be small but fierce.
