These are designer breeds that are bred for a specific purpose. We produce an incredible bernedoodle that displays the qualities of both our champion line Standard Poodles and the Bernese Mountain Dog pedigrees. The advantage of a carefully planned mixed breed is that you get the added advantage of a phenomenon called "hybrid vigor". This process shuffles new combinations of genes that helps to increase longevity and decrease the usual ailments that impact many purebred dogs such as various forms of inherited types of cancer not all cancers have a genetic basis such as small and large cell lymphoma which is usually a result from environmental exposure. The bernedoodles are super healthy and are not as prone to the same issues that Bernese mountain dogs and standard poodles are. As a result, you have a family member for a lot longer and that will live a vibrant and healthy life if properly cared for diet, exercise, and family integration are all important components toward helping the dog to live a long happy life with you.You can see the links above about the qualities of Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs as both are extraordinary breeds in their own right and for many, purebreds of these may be a great option as well. We prefer the Bernedoodle as they get the best of both breeds, incredibly loyal, goofy, smart, playful, intelligent, and has one of the best dog personalities we have seen in a family dog. The Premier F1 Standard Bernedoodle is a low- to mostly nonshedding we use standard poodles that do not carry the improper coat alleles and Bernese mountain dogs that have thick wavy curly coats. If you want a guarantee on non shedding, then you should try to select an F1b or F1bb bernedoodle. Both look amazingly similar to the F1 standard bernedoodles but maybe a little smaller. We will produce about 2 F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodle litters per year for those wanting a more curly coat in their bernedoodles. Premier Bernedoodles love to be with the family and do not do well in enviroments of isolation. Wherever the family is, that's right where they want to be. They are stunning dogs, and you'll likely get alot of attention and people asking you what kind of dog you have. They are beautiful and along with their incredibly gentle personalities, you will have an absolutely stunning dog. They are a perfect companion dog that love to go on walks through the city or hikes in the woods or mountains or a swim at the beach. They love it all and will be at your side the entire time. They don't tend to wander away as they prefer to be with you. They equally love just hanging out with you on the couch watching your favorite movie or watching you reading a book. They really love it all as long as you're a part of it. They are so loyal to the family. Bernedoodle puppies do have energy like most puppies, and this will continue thru about years of age at which time they really mellow out. They are not nervous nor hyper but will need some off leash time where they can really stretch their legs and run. The old motto "a tired puppy is a good puppy" always prevails! Just make sure they have a lot of fresh water and a cool spot to cool off afterward. Due to the the recombination and shuffling of new genetic variations, they do show some variation in their coloration however they also all have a common morphology that tells you it's a bernedoodle. Although we do take deposits on a first come, first pick basis, we will know the puppies well, their personalities, and can help select a puppy that best fits your lifestyle and what you are looking for. We only use Standard Poodles and Bernese Mountain Dogs to produce our Premier Bernedoodles so that any dog we accept into our Premier Bernedoodle program have passed stringent health tests, display family oriented personalities, and exhibit the best of conformation so that our bernedoodles are absolutely beautiful. Be very cautious when purchasing a purebred or bernedoodle without doing your due diligence as the puppies will always be cute, but will exhibit the personalities of the bloodline used later in life. Therefore, use a reptutable breeder that has invested in the dogs they use for their breeding programs and that raise them as their own family members. They should be able to produce their pedigrees as well, and should have both parents on site so you can see how they react to you. We are very Type A when it comes to the quality of dogs which makes it more difficult to give referrals. We are always going to be biased and believe that the wait for a Premier Bernedoodle is worth it and you'll be very happy you did! Also you can visit your local humane society and help rescue a dog at the shelter. If you have young kids be sure to get a younger dog from the shelter that can adapt to your family. But if you're looking for a unique new family member, a Premier Bernedoodle will be a true delight. Colors and Fur Our Premier Bernedoodles will be traditional tri-color much like a Bernese Mountain Dog , abstract tricolor similar to a traditional tricolor with less white in the face , sable similar to a traditional tri-color but has more reddish-browns due to the poodle genetics we use , phantom, merle, merle tricolor, or bi-colored brown and white, black and white, or shades thereof. Our F1b's will consist of black and whites, traditional tricolors, abstract tricolors, and lots of variable brown and reddish brown and whites. Color never reflects temperament and personality so usually most people don't really care too much what color they are. They are all really beautiful. Although there's variation due to the hybrid vigor present as a result of the recombination of genes in many arrays, there is definitely a bernedoodle appearance that is fairly consistent. If you let the hair grow, they will look like big shaggy dogs that you can't help but to give a big hug to. And they enjoy every minute of it! Our Premier Bernedoodles will tend to have wavy curly coats due to the coat types we require in our bernese mountain dogs which helps to minimize or eliminate shedding. We do make sure that our standard poodles do not carry the genetic marker known as the "Improper Coat" allele or IC for short. Wavy curly coats do require a little more grooming as compared to straight, but many, straight coats shed more.Although they are considered to be large, they don't act like a large dog in the house. They are generally very careful and calm natured as adults however they do have some puppy-fun energy thru the puppyhood stages and thru 3 years of age. They love people and other pets! We do thorough genetic testing of our adults that we use in our breeding program to assure that you are purchasing the healthiest of bernedoodle puppies. Our Bernese mountain dogs come from very long-lived blood lines in Western Europe and these longer lifespans is one of the many reasons we obtain our Berners from several specific populations known for their longevity. Obviously we can't guarantee lifespan as there are many variables outside of our control not to mention, environment, stress, climate, food, etc. But track record seems to show a longer lifespan. What's the Difference? An F1b is an F1 standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle or could be a backcross to a Bernese mountain dog but we generally use the poodle as the backcross. An F1bb is an F1b standard Bernedoodle backcrossed to a standard poodle. Behaviorally they are all very similar with the F1b and F1bb's being slightly smaller than our F1 standards and tend to have slightly curlier coats to a tight wave. If you're looking for a smaller standard Bernedoodle these would be a great option. Pictures are posted below with the other pictures. We continue to get lots of praise from those that have purchased our F1b and F1bb standard bernedoodles. Is the Bernedoodle for Everybody? I would like to think so, but if you do not plan on being with your bernedoodle and keeping it with you, in your home, as part of your home, this is definitely not the dog for you. They thrive on being with the family and not isolated we believe this is the case for all dogs, and especially bernedoodles. Any of our puppies kept in a permanent kennel situation, on a tether, or the like, will violate the terms and conditions of our puppy contract and will have to render the puppy or dog back to Premier Doodles see puppy contract in link above. We definitely support crate training, but these dogs are not meant to live their life in a crate nor kennel! If you want a pet that prefers to be in isolation, you may want to consider a nonsocial pet perhaps a Betta fish! Yes we have done a lot of the hard work the first 8 weeks as we do extensive early neurological stimulation bio-sensor and Puppy Culture program, along with starting crate training and housebreaking, BUT, they are puppies and will need your undivided attention for the next weeks as they work towards being completely housebroken and earning more privileges. They have been communicating with their siblings for the past 8 weeks using their mouth. During their normal daily interactions, you will occasionally hear a loud "yelp" in response to one biting another too hard. This yelp usually ends the mouthing behavior. Now puppies have fur and people generally do not. When you bring your bernedoodle home, they will likely display some degree of mouthing behavior toward their human family. This will usually stop this behavior. We then redirect their desire to mouth to something more appropriate like a chew toy and after a few seconds of cooperating we praise them. The good news.We have a Puppy Guide under our tab "Puppy Central" on how to unpack this process so that you can have success. If you put them time in early, they will have this knocked out in a few days. The rule of thumb is to get them outside ALOT.Be sure to purchase two Midwest XL crates can get from our Puppy Store , one for the back door and one next to your bed. The power of meiosis specialized cell division event that occurs in the reproductive organs, ovaries for females and testes for males and crossing over assures that each offspring will be diverse and different and this difference will be noticeable in color and a little bit in behavior. All will be superior, but some will be more playful and others less so, some will mouth more than others, etc. Available Puppies.Check out our "Available Puppies" tab at the top to find out how to get onto our Master List for a future puppy! He is just beautiful and we already adore him. She has been a total pleasure since she joined us less than 2 weeks ago. She is a wonderful, healthy and playful puppy. She has had minimal accidents and continues to sleep through the night with not one accident in her crate. Today she walked over to the door and sat down to let us know that she needed to go out and then did both businesses in a very timely manner. Our daughter, Millie, is loving on Charlie and has really stepped up with many of the daily care items. Finally, she does enjoy her naps as she goes full throttle and then crashes. Additionally, if it is more than 16 weeks old, it should be starting to sleep much less than it used to. If it is still sleeping for more than 14 hours per day then it could be that there is something else contributing to it. If it is also lethargic when awake, it would help to take it to a vet. Other things that can cause a bulldog puppy to sleep a lot Below are a number of other possible reasons why your bulldog puppy has been sleeping a lot. Hot weather The reason why it has been doing it might be due to the weather becoming hotter. This would be more likely if it becomes more tired at midday when it is hot outside and if it can get hot indoors. In this case, it would help to make sure that it has access to lots of shade, water and a cool room. It would also help to avoid taking it out in the sun when it is directly overhead and it would help to exercise it when it is less hot in the morning or evening. Illness It might also be the case that your bulldog has been doing it due to getting an illness. This would be more likely if it has started sleeping more suddenly, if it is fatigued when it is awake and if it has been showing other signs of being ill such as vomiting. If it does seem like illness could be the cause then it would be the best option to take it to a vet. An issue with the room it sleeps in The cause could also be that there is an issue with the room it sleeps in at night causing it to need to sleep more during the day. The room might be too hot, loud, bright or there might not be space for it to lay down properly. It might also be the case that there are other things causing it not to sleep at night such as separation anxiety or eating the wrong foods just before bedtime. Diet Another possibility is that an issue with its diet has been causing it to become fatigued. This would be even more likely if it suddenly started sleeping more when you changed its diet. Too much exercise It might be the case that your bulldog puppy has been getting a lot of exercise and it has been wearing it out. However, depending on its age, there is a recommended amount that you should be exercising it yourself. According to the Kennel Club , a good rule of thumb is to give your bulldog puppy 5 minutes of exercise two times per day for every month of age. So, if it is 3 months old, it would be recommended to limit its exercise to 15 minutes twice daily. It takes a great deal of energy to grow and develop so getting a healthy amount of sleep is the perfect way to allow the body to recover. As your dog ages and matures though the amount of sleep required each day will typically level off. That is because it takes a great deal of energy to grow and develop into a strong, adult dog. Expect an English Bulldog puppy to need anywhere from 18 to 20 hours of sleep per day. Of course, a puppy is not going to sleep for 20 hours straight, but rather break up his or her sleep schedule into short naps. Most puppies will sleep for about 30 minutes at a time to get a quick recharge. If your puppy has had a big day, both physically or mentally, expect your puppy to be a little extra tired the following day to allow it to recover. A good indicator that shows your puppy is growing up and reaching adulthood is the amount of sleep he or she will require in a day. As your puppy ages, he or she will start to explore the world more and will slowly require less frequent naps to keep him or her fueled for an active day. Usually, an adult English Bulldog will require about 12 to 14 hours of sleep a day in order to stay healthy. While this is a marked difference from the amount a puppy needs, it is still the most sleep required compared to any other dog breed. From the start, the temperament of an English Bulldog is not particularly rambunctious or lively, but the physical structure and body make up of an English Bulldog contribute to an adult English Bulldog needing plenty of rest to recover and stay healthy. Senior 7 Years and Older True with many dog breeds, as your English Bulldog becomes older he or she will slow down and require a little more sleep than when he or she was a healthy adult. A senior English Bulldog will usually need about 16 to 18 hours of sleep, which is more than half the day. Senior dogs tend to move a little more slowly than a healthy adult, requiring more energy to perform simple tasks. As the body starts to age it can take more energy to simply walk and move about. This is completely normal for an aging dog, but may become more apparent with an English Bulldog since they require so much sleep to begin with. While it is true that all dogs require sleep to help them recharge and recovery after physical and mental exertion, the English Bulldog is a special case, sometimes requiring more than half the day to feel fully rested and recovered. There are a few reasons why this particular breed of dog needs so much sleep to stay healthy. First, the physical structure of the English Bulldog does not lend itself to an energy efficient build. With short leg, a barrel chest, and a compact face and nose, this dog is not built for physical exertion. While a young English Bulldog will have energy to romp and play for a short while, this dog is better for short bursts of energy rather than sustain long efforts of physical exertion. Further, the size of the English Bulldog will dictate how much sleep is required, with larger dogs often needing more sleep. Secondly though, the temperament and nature of this dog also lends itself to being a solid snoozer. With a calm demeanor, not easily excited, the English Bulldog is comfortable and confident with his or her surroundings. This means that he or she should be friendly, calm, and will generally get along with other people, children, and pets. With a calm and confident temperament, it is alright for a bulldog to sleep for large portions of the day, not easily excitable or overly energetic. When Is It Too Much? If you are thinking about owning an English Bulldog it is important to understand that this dog requires several hours of sleep each day in order to stay healthy. However, when is it too much sleep? If there is a distinct change in how much your pet sleeps it may be time to alert a veterinarian. Suddenly going from an engaged and active dog, to one that sleeps for hours on end, suddenly can be a sign of a larger problem. Alternatively, monitoring a dog that suddenly has an anxious demeanor with little sleep throughout the day can also indicate a larger issue. Be particularly mindful when monitoring how much your pet is eating and drinking, his or her interaction with other people and pets, and how your pet is moving to be aware of any concerning health signs and symptoms. Knowing the baseline for your pet and what healthy behavior normally is will help you determine if a trip to the vet is in order. Just about every breed sleeps for at least 12 hours a night, but bulldogs may need a bit longer. The amount of sleep a bulldog needs depends highly on age, but there are some key underlying genetic factors. Reason 1: All Dogs Need A Lot Of Sleep Different species of animals sleep an incredibly diverse amount of time per day, with bats sleeping as much as 20 hours a day and giraffes sleeping as little as 2! Even so, the amount that dogs sleep per day is still considered to be quite a bit compared to similar species. Unlike dogs, wolves are nocturnal and sleep only hours a day. In the process of domestication, dogs developed a diurnal sleeping pattern to match their human counterparts. Like us, all dogs sleep roughly 8 hours a night. Daily naps, on the other hand, are irregular and split throughout the day. One theory for all these extra naps is that dogs get less REM sleep during each sleep cycle. REM rapid eye movement sleep is one of two major types of basic sleep for you and your dog. It might seem unintuitive, but the deepest part of sleep is actually when we are the most active! This is the phase where dogs dream and the part that makes them feel rested in the morning. Truthfully, a good chunk of the time we think they are asleep bulldogs are simply lounging around. Some may consider their bulldogs lazy, but taking it easy is simply in their blood. English Bulldogs originated in the 13th century after pugs and mastiffs were crossed to create a breed for fighting bulls. Thankfully, bull-baiting was outlawed in England in the s, leading to bulldogs nearly becoming an extinct breed while other bully breeds grew in popularity. Devoted lovers of the sturdy breed began selecting dogs with gentle and sweet natures for the explicit purpose of making the bulldog a family pet. Bulldogs still retain their brave nature from their fighting days which can sometimes if you need a guard dog but have instead been bred for a sluggish yet sweet temperament for nearly two centuries. Accordingly, Bulldogs have been placed in the non-sporting group by the American Kennel Club and are biologically predisposed to be less active than their working counterparts. For as adorable and distinctive as their faces make them, bulldogs have a host of health issues because of it. The broad, short-snouted head shape that bulldogs have is referred to as brachycephalic. These types of dogs have difficulty with heat regulation and proper breathing, so even moderate amounts of exercise wear them out and even put them at risk for heat-related illness. Thier big head can also make it difficult to find a properly sized collar , too! As goofy and fun-loving as they are, bulldogs usually need to end playtime with a nice nap to cool off and get proper airflow. Reason 4: Young Bulldogs Need Extra Sleep To Grow Since puppies are famous for being playful and energetic, you may be wondering how on Earth they sleep hours a day. But anyone who has been around a bulldog puppy knows that they can go from running around the room to snoring at the drop of a hat- no matter what the time! According to veterinarian Jeff Warber in an interview with Yahoo! News , puppies experience rapid muscular, mental, and physical growth. This makes play and exercise important for the healthy development of a young bulldog in every way, which wears them out quickly. With all the food that they eat and the growing that they do, bulldog puppies need quite a bit of shut-eye throughout the day! Reason 5: Older Dogs Need More Sleep In its later years, a bulldog will likely sleep more as part of the aging process. Senior dogs may sleep hours a day, and even hours a day is considered normal. Even perfectly healthy elderly dogs will become significantly less active throughout the day. Bulldogs are unfortunately susceptible to sleep disorders— namely, sleep apnea. Of course, there are a few more common causes to consider before jumping to the conclusion that your dog has this issue. Reason 1: An Irregular Sleep Schedule Although your dog might not be able to read your watch, it still has a biological clock! Like most mammals, dogs have a circadian rhythm that acts as a hour timer to regulate sleep. In wild dogs, this pattern would be synchronized with the natural light pattern of the rising and setting sun. Domestic dogs may not share the same sleep patterns as humans, but we often sleep at the same time. This is fine when we have regular sleep, but life events or unexpected changes may require us to wake and sleep at odd times. All of us have to adjust our sleep-schedules every now and then, but frequent changes can be problematic for both you and your bulldog. Reason 2: Sickness A sleepy bulldog is by no means guaranteed to be sick, but lethargy is a common sign of a variety of diseases and medical conditions. Extreme tiredness is often an early sign of parvovirus or other infections. In these cases, it is often paired with other symptoms, such as fever, vomiting, abnormal appetite and sudden weight-loss. Metabolic disorders can also cause tiredness and present with a variety of symptoms. These include changes in appetite, changes in weight, and excessive thirst. There are plenty of other possible medical causes for tiredness in your pup , including anemia, poisoning, and even canine depression. Narrowing down the cause from dozens of potential health issues requires the aid of a vet for proper identification and treatment. As cute and funny as snoring can be every now and again, it can indicate sleep apnea, a potentially life-threatening disorder. Sleep apnea is when a dog frequently stops breathing in their sleep and is jolted awake throughout the night. This is as scary as it is dangerous for your pup. Due to their easily obstructed airways, sleep apnea in bulldogs is so common that they are often used as models for it in studies. That said, sleep apnea is preventable in every breed. In humans and dogs alike, the biggest predictors for sleep apnea are obesity and old age. Keeping your bulldog fit can go a long way in saving its health and its sleep. Along with many others, narcolepsy, insomnia, and REM behavior disorders are all conditions your dog could face. Defined simply as a disorder that can make falling and staying asleep difficult, insomnia is a multifaceted condition. Underlying causes such as arthritis pain , nighttime incontinence, and stress are often culprits, but insomnia can be a diagnosis in and of itself. Insomnia often develops in senior dogs and can be the result of diseases such as early Canine Cognitive Dysfunction Syndrome. If your dog is showing signs of insomnia, a vet visit for proper diagnosis is in order. Reason 5: Neurological Conditions Poor sleep may be the result of two major neurological conditions— narcolepsy and REM sleep disorder. As opposed to sleep apnea, narcolepsy is most commonly observed in puppies. Narcolepsy is a genetic disorder that results in abnormal neurological patterns and low production of hypocretin, a hormone responsible for alertness. A narcoleptic dog will fall asleep seemingly out of nowhere, especially when excited. Often, narcolepsy is paired with another disorder known as cataplexy, which is the temporary paralysis of your dog. Narcolepsy is an incurable and life-long condition, but is neither dangerous nor uncomfortable for your pup in most circumstances. Even so, if you suspect your dog has narcolepsy, you should speak to your veterinarian for further information. REM behavior disorders have a less understood cause than narcolepsy and can develop at any age. All dogs let out a sleep-woof or twitch at times, but REM sleep disorders are visibly more extreme than this and far more likely to disrupt sleep. Below is an example of a dog with a REM movement disorder. If you were constantly running in your sleep, you would be exhausted too! REM sleep disorders may not be entirely curable, but prescribed medicine from your vet such as clonazepam can do wonders in reducing symptoms. Thankfully, there are a few easy ways to help your dog get enough shut-eye. Set a Schedule Dogs may have adjusted their sleep schedules to match ours somewhat, but at the end of the day there are some key differences between the sleep of us and our canine friends. Dogs have polyphasic sleep, meaning their sleep is split up throughout the day. Usually, the best way to do this for everyone involved is for you to have a set bedtime as well. Humans have a pretty elastic sleep cycle. Giving your dog a comfortable environment before it goes to sleep is important to ensure quality of sleep and avoid interruptions. Environmental cues such as location or events can easily shape biological functions for our canine friends. Giving your bulldog a designated bed and area to sleep in may help signal to your dog that sleep time has begun. For bulldogs, overheating is an uncomfortable and disruptive possibility. Keeping them in a cool but not cold! One way to ensure they sleep at the correct temperature is to get them a specific bed. An elevated bed such as this or a dog bed with cooling gel like this can help keep your pup cool throughout the night. When their environment is dark, a dog produces melatonin to promote sleep. Keeping the room dark before and during sleep is always a good idea. Despite previous theories, this cohabitation rarely disturbed sleep and was therapeutic and psychologically healthy for both parties involved. As a brachycephalic breed, bulldogs are prone to snoring in their sleep , and can certainly slobber quite a bit. Not to mention their moderate shedding can decorate your sheets in an unwanted layer of fur. Thankfully, a protective bed cover for pets, like this great waterproof cover , can help keep your bed clean if you want your pooch to snooze with you. That said, the choice to let your dog sleep with you or not is entirely yours! As long as you can handle the snoring, sleeping with your bulldog in the room may help you both sleep better. Unfortunately, b ulldogs are also prone to heat exhaustion and breathing difficulties , so vigorous exercise is a no-go. Light to moderate exercise with plenty of water and a cool environment can not only keep your bulldog healthy but also improve its sleep! A fully exercised bulldog is a worn-out bulldog, so catching some healthy Zs and getting REM sleep is easy after a workout. Conclusion Dogs sleep a lot throughout the day due to their polyphasic sleeping patterns. Frequent naps throughout the day are to be expected with any dog, and bulldogs are particularly prone to spending much of the day napping. Of course, if your dog is acting strangely or sleeping more out of nowhere, contacting your vet is a good idea. But as long as your bulldog seems happy and healthy, let a sleeping dog lie! When she isn't writing about her favorite animals, she enjoys reading and horseback riding. We go to great lengths to help users better understand their pets; however, the content on this blog is not a substitute for veterinary guidance. Additionally, NotABully. By: Author Jennifer Seegmiller Whether you are a first-time Bulldog owner or a long-time lover of this energetic and intelligent breed you may wonder what is normal for sleeping patterns and behaviors for your Bulldog. I did some research and reached out to other Dachshund owners and this is what I found out. Adult Bulldogs will sleep on average hours a day. Bulldog puppies will sleep hours a day in a 24 hour period. How much your Bulldog sleeps depends a lot on their personalities. Bulldogs also tend to develop sleep habits similar to their owners. If you are fit and active, your Bulldog will be also. If you are relaxed and laid-back, chances are your Bulldog will be similar to you. Continue reading to find out. Newborns generally nurse every 2 hours but even while doing so they will have their eyes shut and look as though they are eating in their sleep. As they grow, they will slowly start to spend more time awake. Around 3 weeks old they will have around hours of active time a day broken up into small spurts of energy and exploring their world. Bulldog Puppy Sleep Patterns Puppies are quickly growing and changing. They need plenty of sleep to fuel and recharge their growing bodies. From months old, Bulldog puppies will generally sleep around hours in a hour period. This includes sleeping at night and daytime naps. Your puppy will sleep in longer stretches at night but will still need to get up to relieve its small bladder and stretch. He may even have a burst of energy and seem like he wants to play. With some patience and guidance, your puppy can learn to sleep through the night by 4 months old, maybe even sooner. Disclaimer: This post may contain affiliate links. We only recommend high-quality products that are used and recommended by real owners. If you use these links to buy something we earn a small commission. Older puppies from around months old will sleep about hours throughout a 24 hour period. At this point, they should be more active and inquisitive during the day and will be better about sleeping through the night in hour stretches. They will also take multiple naps during the day, as well as times of rest when they appear to be just lying around, but somewhat alert as well as high energy awake time when they will want to play and train. Bulldog puppies will generally sleep through the night by about 4 months old, but it can range from 8 or 9 weeks old all the way through 6 months old. Some puppies may also go through a sleep regression when going through a growth spurt or teething. Towards the end of this article, we will discuss those in the heading sleep problems and solutions. Fun Fact: Senior dogs, as well as puppies, tend to twitch more in their sleep! This is due to a part of their brain called the Pons which regulates muscles and keeps them still while they sleep. Adult Bulldog Sleep Patterns Your adult Bulldogs will normally sleep around hours in a hr period, but more as he ages. In this study, researchers found that older and middle-aged dogs slept more during the day than young adult dogs. This was because they took more naps, not because their naps were longer. They tend to run out of energy and need to rest more often than the younger group. Older and middle-aged dogs also slept more at night than younger dogs because they had long stretches of sleep at night waking up later and woke up fewer times during the night. A big factor was how active and attentive the owners were. Bulldogs typically have a little less energy than other dog breeds. This means they may sleep more often than your other dogs if they have pet brothers and sisters. Some owners I talked to did say that their Bulldogs tend to sleep more when left home alone for long amounts of time, like when their owner is at work. This is most likely because there is no one there to engage them with play or give them a reason to get up and move around. So, as you can see their sleep schedule greatly depend on the kinds of habits you develop for your dog. Senior Bulldogs Sleep Patterns Your Bulldog is considered a senior sometime between 7 and 10 years old. At this time, you will probably start to see your dog slowly increasing the amount of time it is resting and sleeping. Senior Bulldogs will sleep hrs a day on average as they get to be years old and older, they could be sleeping up to 18 hrs a day. At an older age, your Bulldog sleep patterns may change as well. For older Bulldogs, these could be signs of more serious issues such as dementia, arthritis, hypothyroidism, or other conditions associated with older age. Your Bulldog may be waking up more at night because its bladder is getting older and they need to use the potty more often. You can try and help with this by taking them out right before bed and limiting their water intake just before bed as well. Many factors could contribute to your Bulldog sleeping a lot. Puppies and senior dogs sleep more than adult Bulldogs. Stress, anxiety, boredom, diet, or disease can all be factors for why your dog is sleeping more than usual. In most cases, it is normal for dogs to sleep 12 or more hours a day. If you are concerned about your Bulldogs sleeping patterns it is always a good idea to talk to your vet. Lethargy or a lack of energy and enthusiasm can be a sign that your dog is being affected by something more than just laziness or a bit tired. If this describes your dog, then definitely consult with your vet. Many diseases and age-related problems can come with a change in sleeping patterns. Some dogs will sleep more in the wintertime because the days are shorter and colder. You can read this article I wrote to learn more about that. Do Dogs Hibernate? Winter Weather Questions Answered If you think your dog is sleeping a lot because of boredom you can always make an effort to have more playtime and exercise sessions with your dog. You could hire a dog walker we have a neighborhood teen that loves to walk dogs for a very reasonable rate! Or join a fun program you can work on together like this popular brain training for dogs course! Because Bulldogs have such a flat face and short nose common to the brachycephalic breed their tongue has less space inside their mouth. Their tongue may hang out while sleeping because it is hot and they are trying to keep cool, or they may be completely relaxed. For the most part, it is completely normal for your French or English Bulldog to sleep with its tongue hanging out. If your dog struggles to keep its tongue in its mouth it could be suffering from something called Hanging Tongue Syndrome. Sleep Problems and Solutions for Bulldog Puppies and Adults If you are struggling with getting your Bulldog to settle down and sleep at night you are not alone. Things that may be making this challenging can range from crying or whining at night, waking up in the middle of the night, struggling to settle down, or waking up too early in the morning. Some dogs will start to sleep well through the night then a few weeks or months later start to wake up again. This is called a sleep regression and can be normal. Like human babies when puppies are teething or going through growth spurts it could cause them to wake up at night or have difficulties sleeping. This routine can include using the restroom, bringing the noise level down, dimming the light, creating a relaxing and calm atmosphere. Give them plenty of exercise: Even though your dog may be pretty chill Bulldogs need plenty of stimulation and exercise each day. At least an hour a day for exercise should be set aside for your dog. The best time for a good exercise session is about 2 hours before bedtime. Try to include high cardio exercise as well and engaging brain activities so that your Bulldog will be both physically tired as well as mentally tired. If your dog sleeps in his own bed, or in a crate, having something that smells like you and a small stuffed animal to snuggle with can help him feel more safe and secure. This is especially true for puppies. Try changing meal times or limiting food and water: Take up their water after a certain time of the evening. If your Bulldog seems to need a bathroom break in the middle of the night all the time you can try changing his meal time to be a few hours earlier so he will get the poop out before bed or a few hours later so he can hold it until tomorrow. Either way, you may want to slowly adjust the time of his meals to see if that will help with the late-night bathroom breaks. If early morning waking is a problem, try figuring out what it is that may be waking them up? Is the sun coming up? Try adding some darkening curtains. Are there noises such as birds or early morning traffic? Try adding some white noise by using a noise machine like this one from Amazon. Amazon affiliate link. All it takes is some investigative work to try and figure out what may be causing the problem. If nothing seems to be working, your dog has changed his sleep patterns suddenly, he seems very lethargic and low on energy all the time, or he has other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his stool, or other concerns then you should take him to the vet immediately to get checked out. If you have a puppy and all its needs are met and it is still crying just remember it is common for it to whine and cry especially for the first week or so that you have him in your home. You can try a soothing stuffy like this one from Amazon affiliate link. An older dog who is new to your home may experience this as well. If you must check on him make sure that the lights stay dim, and you are as un-intrusive as you can be. If you are working with your puppy to sleep in their own bed or crate, make sure to not give in and then expect smooth sailing after that. You need to start the expectations as you mean to go forward. Bulldog Snoring and Sleep Apnea Light snoring in your Bulldog is usually not something to worry about, but heavy snoring may be a bigger problem. Heavy snoring may indicate sleep problems which makes it difficult for your dog to breathe and can, if left untreated lead to sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a condition where breathing repeatedly stops during sleep. Sleep apnea can be dangerous for your Bulldog, but there are some things you can do to help prevent your dog from snoring. Make sure your dog maintains a healthy weight. Overweight dogs are more at risk for snoring. Keep your dogs bed washed and clean. This will help prevent build up of allergens. Get your dog an orthopedic bed with a side affiliate link on it so you can prop your dog up. Teach him to sleep that way. Make sure the room is not hot and stuffy. Use an air purifier affiliate link to filter airborne allergens. This can help add white noise for you as well if your dog sleeps in the same room as you. Try a cool mist humidifier affiliate link. Staying hydrated helps them have a moist nose that can help with better airflow. Watch for nasal discharge or other signs of infection. Make sure they have healthy teeth. A tooth infection can lead to an abscess that limits air flow. Get help from your vet. Being under the covers provides your Bulldog with a place that feels safe and secure like a small den. In general, it is safe for your Bulldog to sleep under the covers or under a blanket, but special care should be taken to make sure that he always has an escape route. Keeping their face un-covered can help. Where Should My Bulldog Sleep? Can Bulldogs Sleep Alone? Your dog can sleep alone but being the social cuddly breed they are would much prefer to sleep with or near you. They are a very loyal and social breed and feel much more comfortable being near their owner or another friend while sleeping. Sleeping near others helps them to feel part of a pack which will help them feel more secure and loved as well as bonded to their family. Can Bulldogs Sleep Outside? It is not recommended that Bulldogs sleep outside. Bulldogs thrive on relationships and being close to their owners, sleeping outdoors can be lonely and dangerous for this social breed. Their coats are also not thick enough to keep them very warm in cold temperatures. Sleeping outdoors can be dangerous as Bulldogs are too small to fight off predators. Do Bulldogs Like to Sleep with You? Bulldogs generally love to be close to their owners. They are very affectionate and cuddly and if allowed can enjoy sleeping in your bed next to you or in the same room as you at night. They tend to thrive on connection and will also likely follow you around the house during the day. There are a lot of great benefits you could get by letting your Bulldog sleep with you. Here are some listed below. Eases stress and anxiety. Try Barx Parx out for a week! The Dog Park Experience, Reimagined. This recently changed. Our newest family member a 5 month old boxer needed some friends and exercise. I decided to take a tour of the nearby Barx Parx to see what they were all about. From the moment my husband and I walked in the door we were greeted by a staff of friendly people. The entrance was very clean, and I couldn't wait to see and hear more. They have an area we could go and play with our little energetic pup when the Vegas weather is so hot, and stay cool in the air condition building. We went and saw where and how they boarded the pets. I loved the cage free idea. I am completely confident he will get the best care and be treated so well when I'm not there. The building is always clean, the prices are wonderful and they always have something fun going on, for you and your furry friends. Check them out you won't be sorry. Barx Parx also has special events days, crafts and picture days for the dogs to keep them entertained. Barx also has video cameras so that you can check on your dogs at any time of the day or night. All team members assist one another to enhance your doggie's experience. A dandy place! Just dandy. But we hit the jackpot with Barx Parx. Plus, during a LV summer, this is the spot. Barx Parx offers social hours, Friday happy hours, in-door park, daycare, boarding, training, and even grooming. They offer memberships for the in-door park, which gives you discounts on the other amenities. Your dog has to do a behavior assessment to determine if they would be a good fit and are not aggressive with other dogs. Once passing the initial assessment, your dog is given a seven consecutive day pass to use at the park. When you walk in, you and your dog are instantly greeted by a very welcoming staff. They check to see if your dog is feeling well and has any mouth sores. Everyone has been so nice to Edamame and gives him a lot of love and attention. Edamame used his free week pass at the dog park. There is a big dog and a small dog section. He was allowed to go in both sides. Edamame loved playing with the big dogs and got more comfortable as the week went on. Daycare is a good option when you have long days at work. It allows your dog to keep occupied and enjoy their day without being cooped up at home or in a crate. Dogs are grouped by personalities vs size. We are definitely going to take advantage of daycare a couple times a month. We trialed boarding out when my husband and I did weekend trips away. It was super successful and you can even watch your dog on camera throughout the time spent there. They offer many add ons, such as extra treats, peanut butter filled kongs, one on one attention, exercising, book readings, and baths before going home. It was definitely reasonable and a loving environment to ease anxiety while away from your pet. Edamame has been trained in the past and he can do all the basic commands, which it shows. He has done sessions paired with another puppy for more intermediate training. He is starting to learn to decrease excitement jumping, focus, follow, touch, leave it, down from standing position, and better leash walking to not pull. Edamame was looking for a new groomer, and now that he has built good rapport and loves Barx Parx, we trialed out grooming this weekend. Everyone is raving about how good he looks. The groomer, Vanessa really listened to my concerns, past experiences, and what we wanted done. When he did not like the sound of the tap or the blow dryer, she backed off. In genetics, an F2 means a second generation cross, or a cross that is 2 generations away from the original parent breeds. There are 2 ways to get to the second generation. The second way is described above, as an F1B. So breeding an F1 Labradoodle or Goldendoodle back to a Poodle to get an F1B, is resulting in a second generation of the hybrid. Are Goldendoodles appropriate for apartment living? Cindy Suit T Are Goldendoodles appropriate for apartment living? Yes, Goldendoodles are a very adaptable breed that can thrive in all residential settings. All they need is proper love and care from you to flourish. Plus, potential owners have the option of choosing a standard, mini, toy or teacup Goldendoodle based on the ideal size fit for their living conditions. While this is an impossible question to answer with any specificity, the average lifespan of a Goldendoodle is calculated to be between 10 and 15 years. Do Goldendoodles get attached to one person? Cindy Suit T Do Goldendoodles get attached to one person? Goldendoodles are extremely affectionate dogs who love to give and receive outward signs of love. They have the propensity to become more attached to one person, but their drive for attention prevents them from limiting their interactions in this way. To the dog, anyone willing to spend a few minutes giving a belly rub is worth an abundance of licking. Are Goldendoodles lap dogs? Cindy Suit T Are Goldendoodles lap dogs? Whether your canine companion is a five-pound teacup or a pound standard, they will see themselves as equally small and act accordingly. If that sounds the least unpleasant, know that new owners quickly get used to having their entire laps swallowed and grow to love these times of bonding. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. They are small to medium-sized dogs, typically weighing between 15 and 30 pounds. Cavapoos have a soft, wavy coat that can be either curly or straight. They come in a variety of colors, including black, white, brown, and cream. Cavapoos are known for being friendly, intelligent, and easy to train. They are also relatively low-maintenance dogs, making them a good choice for first-time dog owners. Cavapoos are good with children and other pets, and they make great companion dogs. Cavapoo Highlights Friendly and affectionate: Cavapoos are known for being loving and loyal dogs. They are always happy to see their owners and make great companions for people of all ages. Easy to train: Cavapoos are intelligent dogs that are relatively easy to train. They are eager to please their owners and can learn basic commands quickly. Good with children and other pets: Cavapoos are gentle and playful dogs that get along well with children and other pets. They are a good choice for families with young children. Low-maintenance: Cavapoos are relatively low-maintenance dogs. They require weekly brushing and occasional baths. They are not as high-maintenance as some other breeds, such as Poodles. Overall, Cavapoos are wonderful dogs that make great companions for people of all ages. If you are looking for a loving, loyal, and easy-to-care-for dog, the Cavapoo may be the perfect breed for you. Here are some additional things to keep in mind about Cavapoos: They are relatively expensive dogs to buy and own. They can be prone to some health problems, such as mitral valve disease, progressive retinal atrophy, and hip dysplasia. They are not suitable for homes with very young children, as they can be easily injured by rough play. If you are considering getting a Cavapoo, be sure to do your research and find a reputable breeder. Cavapoo History The Cavapoo dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders in Australia started intentionally mixing Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles in the late s. Breeders wanted to mix the outgoing and calmer nature of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with the intelligence of a Poodle. Since Poodles tend to shed less, they were also selected in an effort to create a mixed breed for allergy sufferers. Breeders continued to create Cavapoos as demand for the mixed-breed pups climbed. Even though the Cavapoo mixed breed got its start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the breed for you. Check your local shelters, look up Cavapoo rescues, or check with breed-specific Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Poodle rescues, as they sometimes take in mixed-breed dogs and find homes for them. Cavapoo Size As the Cavapoo is a relatively new breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Poodle parents, you can expect Cavapoos to be small to medium, depending on the size of the Poodle parent. Most weigh in at nine to 25 pounds and range in height from nine to 14 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger. Cavapoo Personality Cavapoos have boomed in popularity because they have such an amicable and winning personality. That said, the Cavapoo is not a dog that tolerates being alone very much, and they could experience separation anxiety if not properly socialized and trained. The Cavapoo is an intelligent breed and lives for your validation and praise. This makes Cavapoos fairly easy to train, as they are eager to please. Cavapoos can be athletic too, which makes them great when it comes to agility and obedience competitions. As they can be somewhat attached-at-the-hip, it is important to train your Cavapoo early so they know how to be alone. Without proper training, your Cavapoo could turn to destructive behaviors, like chewing furniture and shoes or rooting through the garbage, when they are left alone. Cavapoos tend to get along with everyone and may even greet an intruder with a wag of their tail. Cavapoos tend to thrive most in homes where they get loads of attention, be it with a family or a senior citizen. Cavapoo Health Cavapoos are generally healthy dogs, but they can be prone to some health problems that are common in both Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and Poodles. MVD can cause a variety of symptoms, including coughing, difficulty breathing, and fainting. Progressive retinal atrophy PRA is a group of eye diseases that can lead to blindness. PRA is a genetic condition that is not curable, but there are treatments that can slow the progression of the disease. Hip dysplasia is a condition in which the hip joints do not fit together properly. This can cause pain and lameness. Hip dysplasia is often treated with surgery or medication. Luxating patella is a condition in which the kneecap slips out of place. Luxating patella is often treated with surgery or physical therapy. Epilepsy is a neurological disorder that causes seizures. Epilepsy can be controlled with medication, but it is not curable. Syringomyelia is a condition in which fluid builds up in the spinal cord. This can cause pain, weakness, and other neurological symptoms. Syringomyelia is often treated with surgery or medication. Dental problems are common in all dogs, but they are especially common in Cavapoos. Cavapoos are prone to tartar buildup, which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss. Allergies are also common in Cavapoos. Allergies can cause a variety of symptoms, including skin problems, ear infections, and respiratory problems. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Cavapoos are somewhat prone to weight gain, and they can have heart issues if they do not maintain a healthy weight. Make sure your dog gets at least one good half-hour- to hour-long walk per day with a few good, active play sessions and shorter walks mixed in. Check their ears for debris and pests daily, and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking loudly against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth daily, as smaller breeds are prone to dental issues. Cavapoo Feeding An ideal Cavapoo diet should be formulated for a small- to medium-sized breed with high energy levels. Limit their amount of treats, as well. They can be a variety of colors , including cream, fawn, chocolate, gold, chestnut, and white. They can sometimes be solid colors, but often they are chestnut and white, or they can even be tri-colored. They usually have short, soft, and wavy or curly coats. They can become quite the fluffballs, though, and require regular grooming. Because of their Poodle parent, they are somewhat less prone to shedding, which is why some allergy sufferers do well with Cavapoos. Their curly coats make them able to tolerate moderate cold and heat. Like all dogs, however, they should not be left outside in either extreme warm or cold temperatures. Cavapoo Children And Other Pets Because the Cavapoo can be on the smaller side, they can get easily hurt by overly excited children, especially younger ones. It is important that any kids in the house know how to safely approach and play with your Cavapoo. Having said that, the Cavapoo loves everyone and generally enjoys romping around with kids. When it comes to other pets, Cavapoos can get along with other animals as long as they are introduced in a calm, slow manner. Cavapoos are generally friendly dogs, and they can get along with other dogs and even cats when properly socialized. Many Cavapoos get along just fine with other dogs and cats, so it really comes down to training, socialization, and the luck of the draw. Cavapoo Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Cavapoos because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Cavalier King Charles Spaniel or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try: Carolina Poodle Rescue Cavapoo Breed Organizations Finding a reputable dog breeder is one of the most important decisions you will make when bringing a new dog into your life. Reputable breeders are committed to breeding healthy, well-socialized puppies that will make great companions. They will screen their breeding stock for health problems, socialize their puppies from a young age, and provide you with lifetime support. On the other hand, backyard breeders are more interested in making a profit than in producing healthy, well-adjusted dogs. They may not screen their breeding stock for health problems, and they may not socialize their puppies properly. As a result, puppies from backyard breeders are more likely to have both health and behavioral issues. More Info For You. They were bred to be a companion dog and perfect for those with allergies because of their low shedding coat. This crossbreed is known for being friendly and sociable, making them excellent family pets. The popularity of the Cavapoo has soared recently and this is all down to their sweet nature. Gentle and cute, this the perfect dog to have in the home with children. They will happily curl up next to you on the couch, but they will also happily spend time running and playing! Read on below to find out more about this interesting small breed. More recently, they are also becoming more popular in the United States and in England, too. Because they are a hybrid breed, the Cavapoo is not currently recognized by the American Kennel Club AKC and therefore does not have a breed standard. It can be difficult to know which parent they are going to take after more and which characteristics they will inherit. Breed Origin To understand more about where the Cavapoo dog came from, we can take a look at the origins of the parent breeds. The Poodle originated from the French and German border in the 15th and 16th century and was associated with the upper class. Because they are excellent water dogs, they were used to hunt water-fowl. Later on, because of their adorable look, these pups became a very popular dog. The Toy Poodle was bred from the Standard Poodle by choosing the smallest pup from each litter and breeding with them. They were first seen in America in the 20th century. They were finally recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Characteristics Of The Cavapoo Because the Cavapoo is not a purebred breed, it can be difficult to know which characteristics they are going to inherit from each parent. One litter may take after the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel parent, while another little may take after the Poodle parent. However, based on past litters, we can make assumptions about many of the traits. A Cavapoo puppy is normally born in a litter size of anywhere between two and eight puppies. Always ensure you are buying from a reputable breeder. Appearance As we have stated, the appearance can differ based on which parent breed the Cavapoo takes more traits from. These pups are normally described as fuzzy faced teddy bears and are extremely cute! Poodles can come in three sizes — Standard, Miniature and Toy. This also means that there are two sizes of Cavapoos available. These dogs can stand between 9 and 14 inches tall and can weigh anywhere between 7 and 18 pounds. Coat There are three different coat types that this Poodle Mix could have. These are hair, fleece and wool. Fleece coats are most common and they have a loose wave or curl to them. They are very soft to touch and do not shed much. They are also low maintenance and only require clipping from time to time. Wool coats are also low shedding coats and have tight curls. Due to these tight curls, they trap dander which makes them the best coat type for those with allergies. However, these coats do grow, so they also require daily brushing and regular clipping. Hair coats can be wiry and rough which can give the Cavapoo a Terrier look. Color The Cavapoo can come in a range of colors. The most common colors are gold, black, white, Blenheim black and white and tricolor black, white and tan. Temperament The temperament of the Cavapoo is another factor that can be difficult to pinpoint due to the fact this designer breed is not a pure breed. Often, breeds are crossed to take the most desirable characteristics from each breed. We can take a look at the temperament of the parent breeds to get an idea of what the Cavapoo may be like. The Cavalier Spaniel is a playful and energetic dog but they are also very loyal and loving. They love to be around people and do not tolerate being left on their own. This can lead to unwanted behaviors including barking and destruction. The Cavalier Spaniel, although not a large dog, has high activity levels and likes to be outside. The Poodle is a gentle and caring dog that also loves people. Much like the Cavalier Spaniel, they do not like to be left alone and will want to be by your side all the time. Very intelligent, the Poodle is easy to train and will want to please their owner. They also have lots of energy and love to join you on walks. Crossing The Breeds It was hoped when crossing the Cavalier Spaniel with the Poodle that the Cavapoo would have the intelligence and hypoallergenic coat from a Poodle whilst keeping the energy, loyalty and playfulness of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. This is mostly true! They are very loyal to their owners, too. This breed love babies and children and so will thrive in a family home, building bond with everyone in the household. They are fairly active dogs and like to be outside. Lifespan The life expectancy of the Cavapoo is 10 to 14 years. Known Health Issues Although mixed breeds are known for being generally healthier breeds due to the out-breeding of health issues, they can still be prone to health problems their parent breeds face. Unfortunately, the Cavapoo is no different. We have listed the most common health concerns below. Patellar Luxation — this is a common condition in smaller dogs and is caused when the patella is not properly aligned. This can cause lameness in the leg or an abnormal gait, sort of like a skip or a hop. Progressive Retinal Atrophy PRA — this is an eye disorder that eventually causes blindness from the loss of photoreceptors at the back of the eye. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. Regular vet checkups and keeping an eye on your dog will ensure you can catch any of these issues before they become untreatable. Remember — buy from a reputable breeder and the chances your dog will suffer any health conditions will be greatly reduced. Trusted breeders will do health checks on both parent breeds and will not crossbreed if there is a chance of passing on any issues to offspring. Daily Life Now we have explored what the temperament and characteristics of the Cavapoo may be, we can take a look at what living with one of these dogs is actually like. We will explore their food and diet needs, their exercise needs and their grooming needs. Food And Diet These dogs are a small breed and therefore require around 40 calories of food per pound of body weight a day. This equates to between and calories per day, although you should always check the back of the food packet to see how much of a certain food you should be feeding your dog based on their weight. Unfortunately, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel can be prone to some weight gain and this can be passed down to their offspring. For this reason, try not to feed your Cavapoo too many treats. If you are worried your Cavapoo is overweight then you can check them. Cavoodle Description The Cavapoo is not a purebred dog. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. Sophie the Cavapoo "This is Lucy. She is a Cavapoo, which here in Australia we call a Cavoodle. She is 11 weeks old and the best puppy. The first night we got her I put her in a soft kennel with the flap up, but gated into the bathroom. She cried a bit and woke in the night once. By night 4, she didn't make a whimper when I put her in and didn't wake until am. She has been easy to train, picking up sit, down, leave it and touch commands by 9 weeks. She is playful, but also loves to cuddle up on the couch. She is great with the kids and has taken to our home very smoothly. She still cries in the day when we leave her.She loves to chew , but doesn't chew furniture, more fingers and plants. She is shedding a bit, but I am not sure if that is a puppy thing, and because we are exiting winter season here. She is the best puppy. He's really sweet and smart. Everything I taught him he learned that day and he was completely housetrained in two months his main problem was just finding a way to tell me how to go out, so I got bells for him. He loves houseguests, but is timid of people in the neighborhood. He's also very loyal and follows me everywhere. If I stay up late to study he struggles to stay awake until I go to bed. He's a little too attached because he cries when I'm in the bathroom and he became a submissive peer the first month; I learned how to ignore him until we went outside and quit doing it. He also is really gentle with small children. However, I noticed he is selfish with other animals. When around my mom's dog a Doberman which he is not scared of he steals her toys and hides them in areas that are too small for her to fit in. He loves burying bones in the couch, getting cheese, the dog park, beach, fetch throw the ball and he'll play for hours and cuddling. Black, brown, red, apricot, cream, white Suitable for Active families looking for an affectionate pet that is also an excellent watchdog Temperament Friendly, playful, intelligent, adaptable As with other mixed breeds, the pup that you get will have varying traits, depending on which parent is dominant in a particular characteristic. Both breeds are quite popular, according to the American Kennel Club. The Cavalier ranks 17th and the Poodle sixth. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. Nonetheless, early socialization is vital to cultivate good canine manners. The same advice applies to training. The Cavapoo is no exception. However, both parent breeds have a history of health issues, which is essential to know up front. The same can be said of other intelligent dogs. How you raise your puppy will have a significant influence on their activity level. Both parent breeds are intelligent. That means that mental stimulation is vital for a good quality of life for your pup. The Cavapoo is moderately sensitive to harsh words, making positive reinforcement a better option. Are These Dogs Good for Families? You should teach them how to pick up their pet correctly to avoid injuries. The Cavapoo is dog-friendly as long as you socialize them as a puppy. They have a moderately high prey drive due to their hunting history. They may chase the family cat if given a chance. That means a time commitment to ensure they that get enough interactive time. The Cavapoo can handle cold weather better than hot, something to bear in mind when going on walks. The dietary needs of puppies differ from adults, where they need the extra nutrients and calories to support growth and development. You should offer your Cavapoo puppy three to four small meals a day. The spaced meals ensure that their blood sugar will stay stable throughout their busy day. You can scale it back to two times a day once your pup reaches adulthood. It might be due in part to their cute face. Who can resist giving them a treat? The Cavalier is more of a couch potato. A couple of daily walks will suffice and give your Cavapoo time to reinforce their leash manners and get exposure to new things. Remember that active pets are less likely to be fearful. The Cavapoo is sometimes a slow learner. We suggest limiting treats to lessons. Positive reinforcement is the best strategy for this gentle-nature pup. Praise will work wonders in a dog so eager to please. If your Cavapoo takes more after the Poodle, you might want to consider giving them a puppy cut to make grooming easier. You may have to pluck hair from their ears occasionally to prevent infections. We suggest getting a pup from a seller that does the necessary screenings. Regular veterinary care is an excellent way to prevent certain conditions from occurring or at least catch them early if they do. That can make the treatment easier and less stressful for both you and your pet. Minor Conditions. Generally the Cavalier Poodle mix has a sweet expression and sturdy little body, like both of their parents. The CKC and Poodle mix puppy will have a longish coat with some wave or curl. Poodles come in a wide range of colors so a Cavoodle puppy could be anything from tasteful, muted color tones: blues, grays, silvers, browns, cafe-au-laits, apricots and creams right through to the black Cavapoo. Or it can be come in the rich browns of Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. Cavapoo Grooming The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has long, silky hair that requires regular brushing and an occasional bath. They do shed, especially with the change of seasons. Poodles require even more grooming — daily brushing, in fact, to prevent matting. This is one reason that owners often choose to keep Poodle hair trimmed short. No matter what, you should brush every day or two to prevent matting, or see a professional groomer. And finally, Cavapoos may get reddish tear stains, which you might prefer to treat. Tipping the scales at 13—18 pounds, they are categorised as a toy breed. Miniature Poodles are usually about 10—15 inches tall at the shoulders and weigh 10—15 pounds. The diminutive toy Poodle is less than 10 inches tall, and weighs as little as 6 pounds, and their Cavapoo puppies are likely to be quite a bit smaller than those with a Miniature Poodle parent. Cavapoo weight and height can vary, but a general rule of thumb here is to look at the measurements of their parents. The range the parents cover is what you can expect. Temperament Traits Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are graceful, sweet, and gentle, and make good companion dogs for households of all ages. They do have some sporting ancestry, so they enjoy chasing squirrels and such. Poodles on the other hand are known for their intelligence, athleticism, and strength. These are agile dogs with great tracking instincts, and nothing less than an abundance of activity and play will do. At home, Poodles are people-oriented, affectionate, and proud. But they are prone to shyness while out and about. A Cavapoo is likely to be good with children and other pets. Some Cavapoos will be brimful of Poodle energy! Of course, how you train your Cavapoo puppy will also shape their personality. Cavapoos are great companion dogs. They are friendly and good with kids and other animals. Their playful energy means they make a great addition to family life. They are fun dogs that can be a good match for any pet-loving household, whether active or not. Even a full grown Cavapoo is a small dog, which has practical advantages in terms of how much space they need in the home and car, how much they cost to feed. Top Training Cavalier King Charles Spaniels excel at obedience, rally, and agility training, and make great therapy dogs. Poodles benefit from agility, obedience, tracking and retrieving activities to test both their mental and physical prowess. With small dogs like Cavapoo puppies, it can be tempting to skip over some areas of training. After all, when they get into trouble you can just scoop them out of it. Training and socialization helps dogs of all sizes to adjust more confidently to new social situations. Armed with this confidence, small dogs are less likely to bark or nip at unfamiliar people. Both Poodles and Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are eager to please their handlers, which makes them great candidates for early training and socialization. They will respond quickly to positive reinforcement training, and learn new commands rapidly. Our puppy training guides will help you hit the ground running with the basics, like potty training , crate training , and recall. Exercise Needs Fully grown Cavapoos need minutes exercise a day. Back at home, your Cavapoo will also demand time and attention for playing games. And enclosed yard where you can play fetch is perfect for this. Besides providing fun and exercise, you Cavapoo will also rely on you to look after their diet and grooming, and look out for signs of illness. Cavapoos need a healthy balance of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in their diet. Our puppy feeding guide can help you with these decisions, as well as feeding schedules. Cavalier King Charles and Poodle Health Mixed breed dogs have the potential to inherit genetic diseases from their purebred parents. To ensure your Cavapoo puppy is as healthy as possible make sure that the Cavalier parent has been checked by a veterinarian as clear for syringomyelia and heart disease. They should also have good hip and elbow scores, and no family history of epilepsy. Average Lifespan Cavalier King Charles Spaniels have an average lifespan of years, which closely the reflects the average life expectancy across the whole dog population. But Poodles boast some of the longest life expectancies in dogdom. Miniature Poodles live for 14 years on average, and up to .Toy Poodles live longer still — up to 19 years. A clear MRI for the Cavalier parent is the most important health screening that you should look for.

PORT ORCHARD — A year-old man charged with shooting his 5-month-old puppy, Aubrey, and leaving him mortally wounded at a Port Orchard park pleaded guilty to misdemeanors and was sentenced to 10 days, though he could serve the sentence outside of jail. Smith had been charged with first-degree animal cruelty, a felony, for the April 30 shooting of his labradoodle, which Kitsap Humane Society employees renamed Toby. Smith pleaded guilty to a count of second-degree animal cruelty and a count of aiming or discharging a firearm or other dangerous weapon. Bassett actually sentenced Smith to a year of incarceration but suspended all but 10 days of the sentence. Smith could serve the sentence on electronic home monitoring or in community service. Neighbors living near Vanzee Memorial Park called at about 2 p. Port Orchard police officers found the dog and drove him to the veterinarian. Aubrey showed positive signs after surgery but died. Thomas-Lewis had been charged as an accomplice to first-degree animal cruelty. After his case was dismissed he left the state. Deputy Prosecutor Anna Aruiza said prosecutors do not have the power to force Thomas-Lewis to appear in court if he is living out of state. Without that testimony prosecutors did not have a key component in the felony case against Smith, Aruiza said. Felony animal cruelty requires the government to prove a person intentionally inflicted substantial pain. He pleaded to what we could prove. Veterinarian records obtained by investigators showed Smith had taken the dog to the vet and paid for its treatment, Aruiza said. She said there was no indication in the veterinarian records that the injuries for which Aubrey had been treated were caused by abuse. Their fathers brought them here, way back when. Currently, if a student has a prescribed medication that has to be taken during the school day, it must be administered by a school nurse of designated staff person. Board members were told that in the school year, the district dealt with 4, administrative prescription orders for students. In order for a student to be given a medication during school, a parent must sign a consent form and the drug must be administered by a delegated staff member with training or a registered school nurse. If the proposed policy is instituted, some students could carry and take their prescription drugs themselves without supervision. Teachers and principals who attended the meeting said they had concerns about students sharing medications. Redirect Your Puppy to Appropriate Options If you find your puppy using their teeth on something inappropriate, such as the leg of a chair or your foot, redirect them to something that they are allowed to chew. They persistently want to nip your hands and clothes no matter what amazing stuff you show them. Or they keep going back to chomp the same corner of the coffee table despite your attempts to distract them with something else. This is where having good puppy management strategies comes into play. Puppy management refers to changing the environment to make unwanted behavior unlikely or impossible. This might mean putting your puppy in a playpen where they can only put their teeth on approved toys and chews. Perhaps you can put your puppy behind a baby gate so your pant leg is safe from their sharp little teeth. Puppy management is simple, yet critical to surviving a teething Golden Retriever puppy. Giving a teething puppy too much freedom is a recipe for disaster, so utilize puppy management whenever you need to. Your home and sanity will thank you! Remove Yourself From the Situation Playing with a teething puppy can be tricky. They want to interact with you, but their mouths are sore and painful, and it can be hard for them to not nip or chomp on your skin, clothes or hair. You can try walking away, though some puppies will get up and follow you so they can chomp you some more. Going onto the other side of a baby gate is a great way to show the puppy that they lose access to you if they get mouthy. If your puppy is tethered by their leash to something heavy, you can also get up and walk away if the biting gets to be too much. The tether keeps them from following their human chew toy. Remember that nipping and chewing are normal parts of puppy development. Punishing a puppy can sometimes make the biting even more intense, and it can also damage the trust between you and your puppy. Premolars, which are found in the back of the mouth, emerge. However, it may also be a difficult period for both puppies and their owners since it frequently brings with it a variety of common problems and worries. Excessive chewing Chewing is a natural habit in dogs, but teething can send that instinct into overdrive. Chewing can be a self-soothing action for teething puppies but can also endanger your belongings. Drooling Is a common problem that occurs during the development of puppy teeth. This is because teething can cause discomfort and irritation in the gums and teeth, resulting in increased saliva production and drooling. Drooling is a common and transitory side effect of teething; most puppies outgrow it when their adult teeth emerge. Discomfort Teething can be a painful and complicated procedure for puppies. Therefore discomfort is a common problem during puppy teeth development. Teething can be difficult for puppies and their owners, but there are ways to help your pet! Give your puppy appropriate chew toys , soft or moist foods, and a cold compress to relieve painful gums. Remember to shower them with love and care during this stressful period. You and your pet can work together to get through teething and emerge with healthy, happy adult teeth! It can be stressful for your dog, so ensuring they have a good and balanced diet is essential to their growth, immune system, and dental health. In addition, puppies require a lot of protein, calcium, and other nutrients to create strong bones and teeth. That is why it is essential to provide them with high-quality, nutrient-rich puppy food that fits their nutritional needs. If your dog struggles, try feeding them softer, wet foods and smaller meals more frequently. You can help set your puppy up for a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums by providing the proper nourishment and care during teething. Ensure to provide them with love and attention throughout this time as well! Feeding your golden retriever the right foods and treats is crucial for preserving oral health and supporting good tooth development. Yummy wet food: Wet food is a tasty option for dogs with a softer texture or difficulty chewing dry kibble. Search for high-quality products that are manufactured with natural ingredients and are designed specifically for pups. Raw bones: For puppies who enjoy chewing, raw bones can be a fun and healthful treat! They can help promote strong teeth and gums and are also a good source of nutrition. Tasty Dental Chews: These delicious treats promote good tooth care and fresh breath. Just break them into small pieces and keep an eye on your pup as they munch. Remember to brush your teeth regularly and schedule frequent dental check-ups with your veterinarian! Golden retrievers are a popular breed known for their extroverted and friendly personalities. They are devoted and intelligent and make excellent family pets. They are, nevertheless, prone to dental problems, just like any other breed, if their teeth and gums are not correctly cared for. Dental problems in Golden Retrievers can cause many issues, including poor breath, gum disease, tooth decay, and even tooth loss. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease in dogs, is caused by bacteria in the mouth forming a sticky film called plaque. If plaque is not removed, it can harden into tartar, which can cause gum irritation and infection, leading to gingivitis and periodontal disease. Dogs, like humans, can suffer from dental problems that cause discomfort and pain. Fortunately, there are solutions to avoid or manage these problems! Tartar buildup, gingivitis, and periodontal disease are common dental issues in dogs and can result in poor breath, tooth damage, and even tooth loss. Daily tooth brushing, regular vet check-ups, proper dental chews and toys, and eating healthy food are all part of maintaining good dental hygiene in dogs. Your veterinarian may offer treatments such as professional teeth cleaning, dental surgery, or medication to handle the problem. Is This Due To Genetics? Poor dental hygiene, sugary or carb diets and specific health conditions can all lead to dental issues in dogs. In addition, certain breeds, such as those with crowded teeth or a higher risk of certain dental conditions, may be more prone to dental difficulties due to genetics. Here are several ways to do it: Teeth Brushing Dogs, like humans, require regular dental hygiene. Brush their teeth once a day with a toothbrush and toothpaste designed exclusively for dogs. Search for solutions that promote dental health and aid in removing plaque and tartar. For example, sugary and starchy foods can contribute to plaque and tartar development. Therefore a well-balanced diet rich in high-quality protein and healthy fats is recommended. You can help your dog have healthy teeth and gums by being aware of the most common dental problems in dogs and taking steps to prevent or manage them. Regular dental checkups, daily tooth brushing, and the provision of appropriate dental chews and toys are all essential components of good oral hygiene in dogs. If their teeth and gums are not properly cared for, both male and female Golden Retrievers are equally vulnerable to dental problems. The good news is that regular dental care, daily tooth brushing, regular dental check-ups with your veterinarian, and providing proper dental chews and toys can help prevent or treat dental problems. If you own a golden retriever , you may wonder if teething affects their appetite or weight. Yes, that is doable. However, when a puppy is teething, it could experience pain and discomfort in its mouth, making them less interested in food. This could result in a decrease in their appetite and weight loss. Your golden retriever may experience discomfort as their new teeth develop during teething, which can trigger changes in its biting behaviour. To alleviate the pain, they may chew on objects more frequently or avoid specific types of food that are difficult to chew. Galen has been connecting quality Golden Retriever breeders with loving families since and is the founder of My Golden Retriever Puppies. He and his wife have four children and love spending time together, traveling lived oversees for 4 years , enjoying the outdoors and connecting Golden families. Be the first to know when we have new puppies! All Rights Reserved. Golden Retrievers go through two main stages of their teeth development and growth. How long does it take to grow new teeth? Do Golden Retrievers ever stop chewing? The teething fun begins at around three weeks of age. Often called their milk or deciduous teeth, it is a very deceptive name for what turns out to be a set of 28 very sharp first teeth. You will know when the teething starts, as your puppy will constantly want to chew. They will chew anything they can get their gums into. Just as human baby gets fretful when they get their first teeth, so too does your Golden Retriever puppy. Not only that, but you will also notice that they start to bite and chew everything including you! And those little bites are painful. Chewing helps to relieve the pain in their gums and soothes the irritation of the new milk teeth coming through. Your young Golden Retriever explores the world through their mouth; they taste what an object is like, they destroy it to find out how strong it is, and chewing is a comfort if they are fretful or bored. The cycle of teeth. Nature determines when your puppy gets their first teeth. Day of birth Puppies are born without any teeth. Just to reiterate the process, the milk teeth appear when they reach weeks old, beginning with the incisors that number six on the top, and six on the bottom. After that, at around 4 weeks, they will get their four canines, which are sharp long teeth. Those sharp teeth encourage the mother dog to begin weaning! This is when a puppy can be introduced to a mushy mix of food which prepares the young dog for solids. Basically, a full set of teeth for your Golden Retriever consist of 12 incisors, 4 canines, and 12 pre-molars — a total set of 28 nice sharp teeth. They must also learn that biting people is not acceptable, so as the owner of your Golden Retriever, you must walk a tightrope to balance the acceptable with the unacceptable teething traits practiced by your little pooch. And you must watch them like a hawk because anything and everything is fair game to a young Golden Retriever who is teething. Many a puppy has been rushed to the vets because they chewed and swallowed something that was not good for their digestion such as chunks of plastic or rubber! As far as when they stop chewing … the Golden Retriever never really stops. They chew as an adult if they are bored, they chew for comfort, and they chew just because they can. But they will be more controlled and will be able to be trained as to what is appropriate for them to chew on. How many permanent teeth do they get? Can you train your young dog not to bite? Golden Retriever owners usually sigh with relief as their puppy starts the second stage of their dental growth and the development of their permanent teeth. Between 4- 6 months of age , the permanent teeth come up very quickly and push the milk teeth out so you will rarely notice any gaps in their teeth. The adult incisors should be in place by the time your Golden Retriever is 5 months of age. Once they are in place, the milk teeth and canine teeth will be replaced by adult canines, followed by premolars, and lastly the molars. The complete set of adult teeth should be complete by 7- 8 months. Or in other words, they should have 42 brand new teeth. Providing plenty of safe things for your Golden to chew on will help with the painful transition from milk teeth to adult teeth. And once the permanent teeth settle in, you will notice that your little chewing monster will bite, and chew less than they used to. They will also become easier to train to stop biting people. Make sure you supply your growing pup with plenty of chew toys, ropes, and special treats that are designed to help keep the new teeth sparkling white. Remember to regularly check your Goldens toys for any broken or torn bits. The Golden Retriever will continue to chew throughout their lives but by then they will know what the best things are to chew and what is out of bounds. It is strange to note that not many owners find the milk teeth lying around. What happens to those sharp little incisors? This may seem a bit alarming, but they are usually swallowed by your Golden Retriever while they are eating. When you note what your Golden manages to eat and trust me, they will try to eat or chew just about anything, a few tiny milk teeth are going to seem like nothing in comparison. Occasionally you may find them playing with something on the floor, and you may find a small pearly white tooth, but often your dog will just gobble it down intentionally or otherwise and you will never see them. The chewing helps to dislodge the baby teeth when the new permanent teeth are coming through. Chewing also massages the gums and offers relief to a suffering pup. Give your puppy toys that have a lot of ridges and bumps on the surface. The bumps help to massage the gums and give a measure of relief to your Golden puppy. If their gums are bleeding, and this is a natural thing, try freezing the toy so that it is cooling and will relieve the bleeding when they chew. Train your puppy to let you put your finger in their mouth and you can use small pieces of ice to massage their gums. Teaching them to allow your finger in their mouth without biting it is good training for later when you want to clean their teeth. Your Golden Retriever puppy may lose their appetite when they are teething. Try giving your puppy some dry food as opposed to wet food as it is good for the development of strong gums and teeth. Provide your teething puppy with plenty of ropes and strong resilient toys to chew on or your beloved dog will use your best shoes, your handbag, and anything else they can find. Specialty toys designed for a teething dog can also be frozen and provide relief on chewing. Old rags are ideal for a chew toy. Wet them down, tie them in knots in several places, and put them in the freezer. When your dog chews crazy, throw them a rag and they will chew on it for ages. When your dog is finished chewing on a rag, rinse it off and refreeze for later. This is a cheap easy teething aid for your Golden. Patience and time are required during this stage. If you stay alert, you can guide them gently through it all by quietly taking unacceptable things that they are chewing on and replacing them with a toy of theirs. If you provide plenty of exercise time, lots of toys to play with, and appropriate chew toys during this transition time, it will be easier for your puppy. Puppies bite and chew for many reasons: They explore the world through their mouth — taste and texture are important as they learn about their world. Part of the biting and chewing is part of how your Golden plays. A Golden Retriever has been bred to use their mouths to retrieve the game and return it unharmed to their master. They learn through play what an acceptable pressure is likely to be. During the developmental teething stage, chewing and biting help to relieve the pain in their gums. And when they are bored or lonely, chewing helps them to feel better. Teaching Your Golden Retriever Not to Bite Understanding that your lovely Golden Retriever is going through a painful development teething stage is important. But just as important is that they still need to be taught what is acceptable behavior and what is not. If you leave it too late such as after the teething stage, they will have some ingrained habits such as chewing the furniture and clothing which takes some training to overcome. Be realistic and put your best shoes away up high. It amazes me that people repeatedly leave them on the floor just where your Golden can find them. Have a small toy handy when you sit and play with them. Use a clicker to train a young dog. The noise of the clicker will get their attention and they should stop and look at you. When they do, give them a reward for stopping, and then lead them onto another activity. Keep them busy. If you can wear out your Golden Retriever, they will eventually collapse and go to sleep. There is nothing so sweet as your puppy twitching and woofing in their sleep. While it may seem a very long year to Golden Retrievers owner, it does pass, and life becomes less of a watchful state and becomes more fun both for your dog and as an owner. There is no doubt that cutting new teeth is a painful rite of passage, and it requires patience on behalf of all owners who have young dogs. Even though your little Golden is only trying to find relief from the pain and is not being intentionally naughty, they must be guided on what is acceptable behavior and what is not. If you can stay one step ahead of your Golden Retriever during their first year, so much the better. Being prepared and using distraction tactics will ease you both through this unsettled stage. An offering of a new toy, taking them for a walk to distract them, or giving them a frozen broth block to lick will keep them happy. If you provide what your Golden Retriever needs during the difficult teething and development stage, you will remain one step ahead of your puppy as they go through the difficult tooth development and growth stages. Golden Retriever Resources and Tips. Learn more » All puppies go through a teething phase, and Golden Retrievers are no exception. During this time, your puppy may experience some discomfort as their new teeth erupt. In this blog post, we will discuss when Golden Retrievers stop teething and offer tips for helping your pup through this phase! Puppy Teething While all puppies go through a teething phase , the timing can vary somewhat from pup to pup. During this time period, your puppy may experience some discomfort as their new teeth erupt through the gumline. There are things you can do to help your pup through this phase! Image Credit: Krakenimages. Make sure that they have plenty of chew toys available. This will help them to relieve some of the discomfort that they are feeling. You can also give them a frozen washcloth or Kong toy to chew on. Finally, be sure to provide plenty of praise and affection, as this will help your pup to feel loved and comforted during this time. Make sure that the toy is made of a durable material that will withstand some heavy chewing. Some durable materials include rubber or nylon. Choose a toy that is the right size for your pup. Pick a toy that you know they will enjoy! This may take some trial and error, as some dogs prefer rubbery toys, some prefer plush toys, and some prefer to chew on bones. A good chew toy will not only help your puppy get through teething, but it will also save your furniture, shoes, and anything else your puppy can chew on. A: For Golden Retrievers, teething usually starts around six weeks of age. Q: How long does it last? A: Excessive chewing behavior can sometimes last up to eighteen months of age, even after the adult teeth have come in around 6 months. Q: What are some things I can do to help my pup during this time? A: You can give them chew toys, a frozen washcloth, or a Kong toy to chew on as well as plenty of praise and affection. Q: Will my pup be in pain? A: Some puppies may experience discomfort during the teething process. However, there are things that you can do to help alleviate their discomfort. Q: What if my pup is still teething after eighteen months? A: If your pup is still teething after eighteen months, it is best to consult with your veterinarian. A: Yes, puppies lose their baby teeth as their permanent teeth come in. You may even find them around your house! Baby teeth can harbor bacteria that can cause infection if they are not removed properly. If you insist on keeping them, make sure to sterilize them first. Sterilize it by boiling it for three to five minutes. However, it is best to leave this to the professionals. Your veterinarian can safely and easily remove the tooth. They will be able to help guide you through what to expect. If there are problems, your vet may also refer you to a canine dentist. Q: What type of chew toy should I get for my teething pup? A: When choosing a chew toy for your teething golden retriever , make sure that the toy is made of a durable material, such as rubber or nylon. You should also choose a toy that is the right size for your pup and one that you know they will enjoy. However, it can be a difficult time for both you and your pup. By providing them with chew toys, a frozen washcloth or Kong toy to chew on, and plenty of praise and affection, you can help them get through this phase. Training Tips Golden Retrievers are intelligent, friendly, and adorable giants who make amazing family pets. And those teeth are sharp! The puppy teething period starts around 2—4 weeks old when their baby teeth, or deciduous teeth , start to come in. By 5—6 weeks old, all of their deciduous teeth should be in—a total of .These include 12 incisors, 4 canines, and 12 molars. In some cases, it can even cause bleeding, swelling, and inflammation. Think of it as a massage for their gums. In addition to the physical pain, teething can also be a stressful time for your puppy. Their whole world is changing. When Do Puppies Stop Teething? Of course, every puppy is different. Some may stop biting sooner than others. And some may never completely lose their biting habits. Offer Them Chew Toys Chew toys are a great way to help your puppy through the teething process. As for the best chew toys to give your puppy , choose ones that are soft and pliable. Hard toys can damage their new teeth. You can also buy puppy versions of baby teething toys, which you can freeze to help soothe their gums. Image Credit: Kinek00, Shutterstock 2. Consider using baby gates to block off certain areas of your home, like the kitchen or your bedroom. Cover Your Legs and Arms This is optional, but it can help you avoid getting bitten. This will create a barrier between their teeth and your skin. Image Credit: Damix, Shutterstock 4. A large breed puppy needs a diet formulated for their needs. Give Them a Calming Activity If your puppy is starting to get stressed out, consider giving them a licki mat. There are a variety on the market and the act of licking food from these textured surfaces can help relax your puppy. Image Credit: Shell, Shutterstock 6. Establish and Follow a Routine A routine can help your puppy feel more secure during this chaotic time. Try to stick to a regular feeding and potty schedule. And make sure to provide them with plenty of opportunities for play and exercise. A tired puppy is a happy puppy! Get Them Checked by a Vet If your puppy is having a lot of trouble with teething, or if they seem to be in pain, make an appointment with your veterinarian. They can check to make sure their teeth are coming in properly, and they may be able to recommend a pain relief medication if your puppy is experiencing severe distress. Here are a few tips for training your Golden Retriever puppy to stop biting: 1. Image Credit: Ovchinnikova, Shutterstock 2. Redirect Their Biting Behavior To redirect means to change the focus of their attention. So, if your puppy starts to bite you, give them something else to focus on, like a chew toy or a bone. The key is to make sure the toy is more interesting to them than your arm or leg. Instead, try to ignore them completely. Over time, this will teach them that the fun times stop when they start to bite. Image Credit By: belefront, Shutterstock 4. Give Them Time-Outs Puppies still have a hard time regulating their emotions, so they can get overstimulated and bite out of excitement or frustration. If your puppy is starting to get too rowdy, give them a time-out by putting them in their crate or another designated area for a few minutes to calm down. Tired Out Puppy Puppies also bite when they are overtired. Ensure that your pup is getting enough sleep during the day and if necessary help them calm down and settle in for a nap. Adult Golden Retrievers, on the other hand, may be bored, they are an active breed , so they need at least 60 minutes of exercise every day, preferably in the form of a vigorous walk or run. Throw in some mental games too, such as puzzle toys or training sessions, to help wear them out both physically and mentally. But it will help you be more patient with them as they go through this difficult stage. Remember, puppies are just like babies at times. They need lots of love, patience, and understanding as they grow and learn. With time and training, your Golden Retriever puppy will outgrow this phase and become the well-behaved, lovable dog you know they can be.

Meaning, they are very sweet, lively and cheerful puppies who like to be with people. If they are socialized properly, a Poodle will both charm your friends and also make a wonderful watchdog. Exercise Poodle puppies of any size are very active and require a good amount of exercise every day to suit their high energy level. They will thrive when they are kept busy and get to act on those inherent impulses such as retrieving, hunting, swimming, and learning. Poodles love to go for walks and jogs. Some even learn to do it themselves with clippers, while others take their dog to a professional dog groomer about every six weeks to have their hair and nails trimmed. Training As with most dogs, the Poodle will do best when they receive early socialization and leadership. This opportunity to learn manners will help that they grow up into a confident, happy adult dog. This is largely due to how cute they are as well as how trainable they are. The best approach to training is to make it both fun for you and the dog. They will respond best to positive reinforcement as they can be a bit sensitive. Despite their quiet nature, Poodles can be fans of their own voices. They tend to alert you to visitors, which is a trait you may appreciate. If you are not a fan of barking, make sure to not react to the barks. You may also want to try clicker training if the barking persists as an issue. See store for details on a particular puppy.
