Supplements — Some people provide prenatal vitamins for dogs during pregnancy, however, you want to check with your vet before giving your dog any type of supplements. Avoid giving her extra calcium, it has been shown to: Increase her chances of developing postpartum hypocalcemia, also called eclampsia. Instead of calcium supplementation, your Pug should be fed a well-balanced puppy or performance food during the latter half of gestation. However, it is important that you keep an eye on your Pug once she starts heading into the final week of the pregnancy for signs of imminent labour, including nesting behaviour. Puppies are usually fully formed at around day 58, meaning that labour can happen at any time. Labour in dogs occurs in three separate stages: Stage one: The uterus begins to contract, but there will be no outward sign of this. The mother will be restless, may lose her appetite as well as vomiting and panting. This lasts between 12 and 24 hours. Stage two: Lasting up to 24 hours, this is when the puppies will begin to be born. Typically, dogs give birth to a puppy between half an hour and an hour at a time, giving you and your dog enough time to clean the puppy, ensure its healthy and stimulate it to wake up and start moving. Stage three: Usually occurs around the same time as stage two, this is when the placenta appears. The placenta itself will be delivered shortly after the end of stage two, when all of the puppies have been born. How do you help your Pug give birth? Once this has occurred, labour will begin within the next 12 to 24 hours. If you have decided for a caesarean section or a vet hospital birth, this is when you should take your Pug to the veterinary surgery. However, if you have decided to help your dog give birth at home then you need to make sure that you have a whelping box prepared, as well as clean towels, heating pads, blankets and emergency medical supplies recommended by your vet such as gloves, sterile scissors and antiseptic solutions. If your Pug is showing signs of labour, including a greyish sack dropping from the vuvla, but no puppy emerges within the next hour then it is recommended that you call your vet who will be able to advise you. Also, if your Pug is showing contractions for more than two hours without any puppies being born, call your vet immediately. When a puppy is born it will be covered in a thin layer of membrane that needs to be broken open and removed so that they can start breathing. Break open the membrane before rubbing the puppy vigorously with a towel to trigger its breathing. Again, if the puppy is not showing signs of breathing when doing this please get on the phone to your vet immediately. The puppy will also be still attached to the umbilical cord. Normally your dog will chew through this herself, but if not then you will have to do so yourself with a pair of sterilised scissors. Cut or rather crush to reduce bleeding the cord around an inch above the belly of the puppy and tie off the end with dental floss and dip the end in an antiseptic solution. After each Pug puppy emerges the placenta will also be discarded, around fifteen minutes after the birth. This can be immediately discarded, although your dog may try and eat it. Once a Pug puppy is born and is breathing, place them in either the whelping box or in a lined laundry basket along with blankets and a heating pad. Once all the puppies have been born and you are sure that the labour is over, take your dog outside to urinate especially if the labour has taken several hours before returning to the whelping box and allowing her to start nursing her pups. Again, your vet will be able to offer advise over the phone if you are concerned about any of the puppies. Conclusion Pugs make for amazing pets, however due to their popularity increasing there as been a surge in unscrupulous breeders who use irresponsible practices. The nose is black, brown or liver colored depending on the pigment. The oval eyes are dark. The muzzle is square, wide and deep with a strong appearance and adjusted flews. It has an undershot or scissors bite and is not faulted for broken teeth. The neck is muscular, slightly arched from the shoulder to the head, tapering and is free from loose skin at the throat. The chest is deep with closed ribs. The thighs are medium in size with well-developed muscles, joints with proper angulation about 30 degrees , and standing parallel. The joints are fairly steep but not overbuilt. The back is strong with a slightly sloping croup and a slight depression behind the withers. The tail is set low, reaching to the hocks, allowed in all forms, but a straight, intact tail without kinks is preferred. Male vs Female Females — make wonderful pets if raised properly. Some tend to be moody just like us women, and at times, are overly protective of their owner or obsessed with their territory. Training and discipline are very important not to over spoil her as a puppy. It is also important to note that if you do not spay your female, you will have a very moody dog that may not be the sweet, lovable, great temperament that you first saw when she was a puppy. Getting your female spayed is a must! Other Considerations — Do you have many people in your household? Or other pets where the female must fight for the pack order or their alpha position? Do you have a lot of commotion or very busy household? Are your children young? Are many kids in and out of your home? While females can become adaptable, females tend to do better in a calmer, less busy environment with older children in the home. If your family is just you and your spouse, a female may be a nice choice. Males — make wonderful pets, maybe even more mild tempered and easy going than girls. Males have a bad reputation over the years for marking their territory and hiking their legs and peeing in the house to claim their territory. This is from owners failing to neuter them before 6 months of age. If you have him neutered early enough, he will almost always squat to pee and will not go into puberty and become the stud man. They will become a stud monster as we call them. They will hump pillows and even your leg or hand and mark and pee on sides of furniture and totally change personalities. They will also try to run away if they smell a female in heat even a half a mile away! To avoid this, please have them neutered as recommended by your vet and you will still have the adorable little boy dog. Males are typically more affectionate than female. They tend to crave attention from their owners more than females and as a result, display more affectionate behaviors. Males tend to be more focused on their human companions. They want to always be close to the human and are very eager to please. This is usually at least 2 weeks after the last puppy vaccination. It can be deadly to do otherwise. As they can catch diseases from other un vaccinated dogs! I cannot stress this enough Treat your new puppy as you would a newborn baby. I recommend that you try to make the first few days together with your puppy as calm as possible. Remember, this is a very traumatic time for your puppy. Nervousness or change in diet may cause diarrhea. A puppy will play until it drops. It may play so much that it is too tired to eat. Especially be aware of the amount of time children play with your puppy. Stress can trigger Coccidia. I preventatively treated your puppy for coccidia. Feeding your new puppy I strongly recommend that you continue feeding only Iams Small Breed Puppy formula. Please do not feed your puppy people food as it can make them sick, give them diarrhea and make them a picky eater. Some, but not all, puppies may need to be supplemented with a premium canned puppy food and Nutri-Cal for the first few weeks. Be sure puppy eats every 6 hours. Food should be available at all times for approximately 2 weeks after receiving your pup. You can then start routine feeding times, 3 times per day. The amount you feed per day depends on the weight of your pup. There is a suggested serving on the Iams bag. Just divide that amount into 3 for 3 times a day feedings By 6 months feed twice daily. Low blood sugar Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a health problem that affects many toy breeds of puppies between 5 and 16 weeks of age, especially, but not always, extremely tiny dogs. Hypoglycemia is recognized by a healthy puppy suddenly becoming weak, listless, depressed, unaware of its surroundings, and even unable to stand or walk. Advanced stages include seizures before lapsing into a coma, which is sometimes followed by death. Give the puppy Nutri-Cal or Karo syrup. Administer the syrup with an eyedropper or if the puppy is too weak to take it, put it on your finger and rub it on the roof of its mouth. Nutri-Cal is a fast acting, high calorie supplement and may be given off of your finger. Keep the puppy warm at all times and rub the puppy very easy, moving the head from side to side slowly rotating it, also move the arms and legs so the puppy will not get stiff. It may be necessary to give the puppy a couple of doses. Hypoglycemia can occur without warning if a puppy is placed in a new home, misses a meal or is otherwise stressed. You must remember that puppies eat very small amounts, yet they exert large amounts of energy. Your puppy should eat times a day. Remember if there is a problem with hypoglycemia, it will usually happen during the first few weeks while the puppy is adjusting. The puppy will outgrow this as it becomes adjusted. First 48 hours We recommend that you not leave your puppy alone for the first 48 hours so that you can monitor his food and water intake. This will combat any dehydration or hypoglycemia. After the first 24 hours, continue monitoring food and water intake. Do not allow pup full run of house as he can lose sense of where food and water is. Do not let your puppy jump off couches, chairs, beds or any other high places. This could cause broken bones or injure their legs, ankles or kneecaps. NEVER leave your puppy or dog in your car for any amount of time, even if the window is cracked. They usually weight anywhere from 8 pounces to one pound at birth and usually do not have wrinkles at this age. As they grow they start to get pigment in at about one week of age and this fills in gradually over the course of time, not all at once. Ear canals and eyes start to open as soon as two weeks but some a bit later. Eye color is almost always a grey blue at first. At about weeks old bulldog puppies start to get enough fat under their skin to have some wrinkles. Because they are so short in height and length they tend to look like fat little balls of puppies.
