There are a number of things that can cause a dog to be reactive to seeing other dogs; territoriality, insecurity or fear, aggression and excitement. My initial goal for the session was to determine which one of these factors was influencing pepper. I sat down with peppers guardian to discuss the situation as well as her day-to-day routine. This means the dog thinks it is in a leadership position and is often related to why the dog doesnt listen when corrected by their guardian. Enforcing these rules and boundaries in a timely fashion is how we can communicate to the dog what is and is not allowed. Additionally reinforcement of these rules is a great way to start redefining the leader follower dynamic between human and dog. After suggesting a few rules and boundaries I went over some nonverbal communication methods for peppers guardian to start using. However to a dog, this yelling is interpreted as the human agreeing with whatever the dog is barking at. But by using nonverbal forms of communication that mimic what dogs do amongst each other, we are able to help the dog understand that we disagree with the barking. Next I ran through a leadership exercise that I like to use. This exercise involves the dog leaving a high-value treat alone that is laying in the middle of the floor. By giving the dog as much access as possible and asking it to restrain itself, we can help the dog learn to develop the ability to self-restrain. We started out in the kitchen and I was able to run through the exercise a few times successfully. Instead of responding the same way that she did with me upstairs, Pepper attempted to circle and or go around her guardian to get the treat. As soon as the dog communicated this, I had peppers guardian give the dog permission to take the treat. We ran through the exercise a few more times to make sure that both Pepper and her guardian were using the right technique and understood how the exercise was conducted. To test this new skill set, Peppers guardian called her next-door neighbor and asked her to come and knock on the door to trigger the response the dog usually displays whenever anyone arrives. Often when a dog barks and rushes the door, the human feels embarrassed and rushes to the door themselves. The dog usually interprets this rush as the human is nervous therefore it is right to bark at the intruder. In either case, the dog has the wrong idea. As soon as the neighbor started knocking, I got up and walked in a normal pace to answer the door. Once I was at the door I turned around to face the dog, then started marching directly at it. This surprised Pepper and caused her to back away from the door. As soon as Pepper crossed the threshold from the tile in the entryway to the carpet in the living room, I stopped moving forward. By stopping precisely when the dog crossed the threshold I wanted it to stay behind, I was able to communicate to Pepper what I wanted in a way she understood. Once Pepper was behind the boundary, I started walking backwards towards the door while keeping my front facing the dog. As soon as I got to the door, I reached to the side with my hand and started to jiggle both the deadbolt and the doorknob. Each time Pepper heard a new sound, it triggered a response from her and she started to move forward. To communicate that I disagreed with this movement, I took a sudden and deliberate step directly at Pepper each time she crossed the boundary. It took three or four corrections before Pepper sat down behind the boundary and waited for me to open the door. By waiting for the dog to stay behind the boundary, Pepper was better able to restrain herself and keep her energy level at a reasonable level. This distance allowed me to open the door and greet the neighbor without Pepper rushing or jumping up on her. This time Pepper did not bark when she heard the knocking, but instead rushed to the doorway ahead of us. She used the same movement that I did to get Pepper to back away and move behind the boundary. Each time she jiggled the handle or deadbolt Pepper started to move forward, so she disagreed with the dog by moving towards it the same way I did. It took a minute or two before Pepper got it and sat down behind the boundary to the door. In time, Pepper will learn to sit and wait for her guardian to handle answering the door and wait behind the boundary until the guest passes it before engaging with them. No matter what they get into, just one look at those sad eyes and I am a big bag of mush. They are the cleanest babies I have ever seen. They love to play in the mud and I let them! They are my babies. They are so smart, I lock them out of the doggie door and they will clean themselves, when finished they knock on the door. They loves kids! They use to jump on them but I have trained them that babies cry. So now they walk up and allow them to pet them while they wag their stumps and drool thank goodness Walmart has an endless supply of baby wipes. They are very territorial,nthis is our fault. There is some research which suggests that eye-pressure increases in dogs wearing collars, when they pull. Eye pressure does not increase in dogs wearing harnesses. You might have noticed the collar almost cutting into her throat, as she pulls into it. Perhaps your Labrador puppy stands up on her back legs, when she wants to greet another puppy — bearing her full weight on her throat. She might cough afterwards. When puppies used to wear collars to my training classes, I would often see them waiting for class, rearing on their back legs to reach other puppies. You want your Labrador puppy to calm down, perhaps to sit and greet a person, or at least stop pulling. Doing all of that, involves thought, for a dog. So, we need to put your Labrador puppy into a frame of mind where they are able to think about how to earn your rewards. A harness means that your Labrador puppy is restrained, but also able to concentrate and problem-solve. Yes and no. The permanent and most effective solution to pulling on the lead, is training — regardless of whatever device or piece of equipment you use. Loose-lead training can be an ongoing process. Some Labradors have higher energy levels than others, and these might be especially challenging and rewarding! You should not feel like a failure or give up, if you are finding it difficult. Instead, get in touch with a force-free trainer who will be able to help you. During the time you are training your Labrador puppy to walk beside you, and even once you have trained your Labrador to walk on a loose-lead most of the time, sometimes you are going to come across things which interest her. It could be some food which someone has dropped in the street. Or another dog she wants to greet. Or a cat which runs out in front of you. It is almost impossible to imagine a Labrador — even a well-trained and responsive Labrador — which is healthy and which never attempts to reach something, when on the lead! And at those times, the leash is going to go tight. And all these points, will come into play. So: Yes, the solution is training. So we need to choose a piece of equipment which is the most humane and which can help our training, under those circumstances. When pulling towards something on a collar, they can easily tow you a few steps behind them. There are safety issues, here, as they could tow you into a road. But also the few steps they managed to pull you, will reward the pulling a good deal. They got closer to what they wanted, by pulling. Pulling worked. And so they will continue trying to pull, next time they see something they want. So, we need to reduce their power so we can stop even a large, strong dog, immediately. Does a harness reduce their power in this way? Not all harnesses… Back-attaching harnesses Many years ago, I first tried a harness on one of my dogs. I found that this harness gave her much more power. If she suddenly lunged, she could tow me more with a harness than she could with a collar! With the back-attaching harness, when the lead was tight because there was something in front of her which she found interesting , her face and neck was orientated away from me and was at a distance from me. I found it difficult to get her attention, using treats or my voice, because that front part of her body was so far away and I was behind her. I saw dogs jumping up on their back legs and flailing their front legs around. So, the back-attaching harness solved all of the physical health concerns which collars had held, for me. My dog was no longer choking herself on the odd occasion she wanted to reach something. For the owners of small or toy breeds, the back-attaching harness seemed perfect. But it was not viable for me, because of the decreased control I had over large and strong dogs and the difficulties in training which this caused. But at the time there was nothing else available, so I reluctantly returned to a flat collar. Front-attaching harnesses Fast-forward many years, and I began to hear about a different sort of harness available in the US. At the time, there were only two brands of front-attaching harness available. Now there are many different brands, and I hope to review them for you in another article. The front-attaching harness solved all the control and feeling-in-connection problems experienced with the back-attaching harnesses. I began to recommend these harnesses to clients attending my training classes. I stopped seeing dogs choking themselves, and my clients had much more control than with a collar. A typical red will love lying in our laps and winding around our legs like cats for affection or attention. They are a very "soft" natured dog and respond well to "positive" training. If you are harsh with them or they sense they are disappointing you they will mentally just shut down and pout. They also want to be everywhere with you including the bathroom. You will always hear the pitter patter of a red standards feet as they will be your shadow. They love working for praise and or a laugh. Once they know a trick, they will produce it with amazing precision with eager eyes waiting, begging for your praise and you better be lavish with it if you want to see them happy. Rose pups I would describe our reds as being the most empathetic of all the colours. It is as if they can read you and decide if you are happy in which case they may be silly to get a laugh or they know that you are sad and will be calm and quiet and just rest their head on your lap waiting for you to invite them up on the couch to watch a movie with you. I do find that the reds are more "dedicated" to their owners. Valor and Ember Do not leave your red standard poodle at the window while you go to get a Tim Horton's coffee or you will be met with the back of your red standard poodle and hear sighs of "woe" until you are forgiven. Thankfully reds like all poodles, forgive quickly. I will warn anyone that is thinking about getting a red Standard and plans on walking them, that you will not get past a block without someone stopping you to see your puppy. Everyone will want to know what breed it is and you will hear people exclaim "I didn't know poodles came that colour or that size". We have almost caused accidents by people slamming on their brakes to stop to look at us. One thing is for sure is that if you go walking with your red you will make many friends Paris waiting for her owner to finish in the bathroom, after she tried unsuccessfully to get in This color Red is NOT for everyone. If you are not used to having a dog constantly at your feet or on your lap, constantly touching you, or wanting to be in the same room as you then you might find a red to be too "needy". If you have plans on doing Pet Therapy with a Red they are perfect for this as they are so gentle and caring, but please -limit- the time you offer your Red to the service, as they can become easily drained from them absorbing others emotional and sometimes physical pain. They do love obedience and showing, of course as how better for them to show everyone how smart and pretty they are! During that time, I broke both my feet and also required both of my hips to be replaced.
