Andy's foster - to - adopt success story written by his forever family: "Early in , we started the process to find our Golden Retriever girl a companion and adopt a rescue dog in need of a good home. We submitted an application to FRR and subsequently had a virtual home visit. We were impressed by the thoroughness of both, as it gave us confidence that FFR clearly had the best interest of their animals in mind. While the timing was less than ideal due to some upcoming summer plans, we agreed to foster one of the pups for as long as three weeks. Two days later, a tiny black male pup with a spotted white chest was delivered to our home. He looked like he is wearing a tuxedo. He came with the name, Andy. He was a world-class cuddler who immediately began to work his way into our hearts. Our golden retriever soon welcomed him into our home as well. Within a couple of weeks, it became apparent that this foster puppy was going to be adopted as a member of our family. It also became apparent that Andy was the perfect name for him. It just fit, not only in his cute appearance but also in his behavior and antics. Andy was one of a number of puppies that we have brought into our home over the years, and we have always been sticklers about health, wellness and neutering. So, it was great to see that FFR also insisted on this same level of care and attention. Andy is now 6 months old. He has adapted well to our home and lifestyle. He has even traveled with us to our Idaho home for three months. He is still all puppy: filled with the energy, entertaining antics, and occasional mischief that make puppies fun. He and our golden retriever are now fast friends, so our efforts to find her a companion have been richly rewarded. The first step in the adoption process is to complete the online adoption application link below. The next step is the in-home visit. This non-refundable donation helps to offset the costs associated with making our dogs ready to meet adopters, including providing veterinary care, boarding, and other needs. After your application is received, one of our volunteers will contact you. It may take days to be contacted, as we receive many applications and volunteers are spread across many duties. The volunteer will schedule a home visit with you. Before submitting your application, please know that our current inventory of dogs is low and the level of applications continues at robust levels. The application and home visit are held open for 2 years. Please carefully review this eligibility information prior to submitting your adoption application: GRCGLARescue does not adopt dogs to homes with children under 7 years old unless we know that a particular dog has a solid, positive history living successfully with kids of a similar age to those in the potential adopter's home. As a rescue we receive very few dogs that meet this criterion. Finding a dog who is going to be safe with your kids will likely make your adoption process longer. This policy is for the safety and well-being of your families and our dogs. If you're patient and have realistic expectations about adoption, we'll be very happy to work with you. Because we do require pre-adoption screening and post-adoption follow-up, we cannot support adoptions outside of this service area. GRCGLARescue does not adopt dogs to rental applicants without written proof that the landlord will permit a dog the size of a Golden Retriever in their rental abode. This proof can be a copy of the lease having a clause allowing such a dog, or a separate written document of landlord approval and must be provided to one of our volunteers prior to a home visit being scheduled. Additionally, we will require written proof of any additional pet security deposit required by the landlord being paid. Unfortunately, most applicants will not get a dog from us. The more flexible you are about your ideal dog the better your chances become. We recognize that you may be working with other rescues, as well as breeders, and visiting animal shelters too. All dogs are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped and vet-checked prior to adoption.

Merle Bernedoodles are also quite rare, although they are becoming increasingly popular. However, this raises some ethical questions. Black and white bi-colored Bernedoodles are relatively rare, as are phantoms and sables. Strangely, although these colors are rare, you might be able to get one sooner than you would a tri-color Bernedoodle! What Is A Merle Bernedoodle? The merle Bernedoodle has a speckled coat over a solid base color. It usually has a brown or black base with lighter flecks of blue or red over the whole coat. It can affect any type of coat, including sable and brindle. The best way to describe it is a mottled, patchwork effect where blocks of solid color have been diluted by the merle gene. Many of these dogs have blue eyes, and sometimes will have one blue eye and one brown! As we mentioned, the merle gene is not naturally present in the Poodle breed or the Bernese Mountain Dog, so it must have entered the Bernedoodle bloodline from outside these breeds. You can read more about the potential health issues related to the merle gene further down. Some breeders charge more for these dogs, simply because demand is high. Think twice before you buy from anyone who sets a high price tag on merle pups! Bernedoodle Eye Problems The Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle are prone to progressive retinal atrophy, a group of genetic eye conditions that eventually lead to complete loss of sight. As a result, the Bernedoodle is at high risk of PRA, so you should always ask the breeder whether they test for this. A reputable breeder always runs a health screening program to ensure that their pups are as healthy as possible. They may become disoriented at night or in low light conditions and bump into any obstacles. The symptoms will worsen over time, and the dog will become blind. There is no cure for PRA at present, and dogs with this condition are usually prepared for life without sight. Genetic testing of breeding dogs is the best way to tackle PRA at present. In addition, we should mention the potential dangers of the merle gene. The merle gene is a genetic modifier responsible for the unusual, randomly mottled, and marbled coat pattern in various breeds, including Australian Shepherds, Labradoodles, Cardigan Welsh Corgis, Border Collies, and Bernedoodles. The trouble with this gene is that it also affects the structure and color of the eyes and the skin and pigment inside the ears. Dogs that inherit one merle gene from the parent dogs are just as healthy as any normal dog. This is terrible news, as double merles can suffer from severe eye and ear problems. They are often also at a high risk for various types of cancer, including skin cancers. Merle Color Issues To drive the point home, you need to be careful about dogs with the merle pattern coat. Most dogs that carry a single copy of the merle gene live normal, happy, healthy lives. It may be born blind or lose its eyesight at some stage. Some are born with eyeballs that are too small to be viable, and these have to be surgically removed. Others suffer from a hearing deficiency or are profoundly deaf from birth. All good breeders will avoid breeding double merles, though some will knowingly use a single merle, having thoroughly checked the breeding partner to make sure it is clear. This seems odd, as every dog we know today was a mixed breed at some time! However, the AKC only allows breeds to be registered if parent breed clubs campaign over several years for this to happen. As it happens, some Bernedoodle breeders have been doing just this to have the breed recognized by the AKC. Also, the AKC has come under heavy criticism for endorsing cruel practices such as tail docking and ear cropping. In addition, they have been accused of keeping breed standards that contribute to suffering purely for the sake of conformation. For example, the Pug suffers many health problems because of its flat face, including eye injuries and breathing difficulties. The German Shepherd is prone to hip dysplasia because of its sloping back. Any dog with multiple folds of skin around the face is likely to get skin infections. King Charles Spaniel is at risk of brain deformity because of the shape of its skull. These are just a handful of examples. None of these features are natural, and all of them have been selectively bred into certain breeds because humans like how it looks. Those against the Bernedoodle being registered with the AKC prefer to continue the way they are, breeding healthy pups without restrictions and interference. Those in favor point out that registration is a good thing, as AKC members are bound by a code of ethics, allowing customers to choose wisely. It has bags of love to give and will be loyal to the end, so who cares if its coat changes color? It gets on well with other dogs, greets strangers like old friends, and absolutely loves kids. The city said the animals then become property of the city and the owners cannot get the animals back. People who have lost their pets to this code say it is flawed. Tuesday night, the Lawton City Council looked at rewriting the code, so the people could have their pets returned. Some pet owners just wish it would have come sooner. One couple confronted the city about how they fell victim to the flawed code. Lori and Dalas Anderson said the dogs were their property and they didn't know the permit was required. They are shocked that there is no provision that gives them a second chance. They tried to get reimbursed for the puppies taken. As a breeder, it takes a great deal of time, patience, and money to raise healthy, happy labradoodles with wonderful temperaments which is then passed down to the puppies that will go on to be your much loved family pet. General Appearance: The Australian Labradoodle will have an athletic and graceful, yet, compact body. They should not appear heavy or overly fine. A distinctive feature of this breed is their coat, which is non-shedding and easy to manage. Movement: Trotting gait is effortless, smooth, powerful, and coordinated in mature dogs. Sound free movement and a light gait are vital. The sizes are measured to the withers top of the shoulder blades. Soundness is very important. Weight range tends to be 15 to 25 pounds. It comes in many styles, straight open fleece, wavy fleece, to spiral fleece. This coat is easy to maintain, but must be brushed in order to remain mat-free. There should be no body odor with this coat and very little to NO shedding. WOOL: These coats are denser to the feel more like a sheep's wool. The sprung wool coat is not preferred. To keep the wool coat long and flowing will require more maintenance. If this coat is kept short, it is very easy to maintain, but also requires regular grooming to avoids matting. There is no body odor with this coat. HAIR: Hair textures shed and are unwanted. There will be some shedding with this coat, although it could be minor shedding. This is not a coat for anyone with allergies or asthma. Black noses will have black lips and dark eyes. They can come in varying shades and may fade as the dog gets older Black: Dark and rich, black, they maintain this color their entire life - black nose Blue: Blue dogs are born black but will have blue skin and undertones at a young age -black nose. Blue also belongs to the Rare Color Group. Silver: Born black but will have more of a gray skin and will develop individual silver fibers at a young age- black nose. Silver dogs can take up to 3 years to color out. Uneven layering of color in the silver is normal. Chocolate: Dark and rich, born almost Black, they maintain a dark chocolate their entire life - brown nose. Chocolate belongs to the Rare Color Group. Cafe': Born Milk Chocolate of varying shades, and have the same dilute gene as the silver dogs, often taking up to 3 years to fully color out to multi shades of chocolate, silvery chocolate and silver throughout - brown nose, they also develop stunning highlights. Parchment: Born Milk Chocolate, will pale to a smoky creamy beige. Paling usually starts from an early age often as early as 6 weeks - brown noses. Parchment belongs to the Rare Color Group. A dog that experiences this may develop scars from such actions that they will carry with them the rest of their lives. It will take time for your puppy to respond to commands. A leash is a primary way you have to control your dog when on walks or out in public. You see this all the time when people are walking their dogs. The is especially true with a large breed but even a small dog like a Mini Goldendoodle can become challenging if not trained properly. This takes time and a lot of patience. Our Mini Doodle pulled like any other dog in the beginning but we often corrected her with commands and a slight tug here and there. Because we started young, she became good on a leash and has continued this trend for most of her life. The best way we found to leash train our Mini Goldendoodle was to take her on walks consistently. Rather than just letting her run free, our focus was on keeping her by our side at all times. We also practiced around the house and gave rewards with treats when she did what we wanted her to do. Our breeder suggested that we make use of a bell so that our dog would have an easy way of letting us know she needed to go outside and potty. We gave it a shot and it has been super convenient for our Doodle to let us know that she needs to go outside. Rather than walking around crying, they can ring a bell and you can hear it all over your house. Any dog that I ever have in the future can expect to have bell training incorporated into their potty training. Eventually, they will catch on that every time they go outside, the bell needs to ring. It signals to them that what they have done is worthy of a reward so they are more likely to do that in the future. If you are going to train your dog like this, you will go through lots of treats throughout a training session. Using healthy, low-calorie treats for this is a must. Our favorite was baby carrots which we cut up into small pieces as we were training her to do different things. She loved the crunch and taste of them and now 14 years later, they are still among her favorite foods. We have used them as treats her entire life. You can also give them small fruits like blueberries , or small apple pieces. Just make sure not to give them anything that might harm them. Here is a good list of foods that should be avoided. If you just purchase boxes of treats and commence to giving these as training rewards, you might see them gain weight if you are not careful. If not now, at least later on in life since they are going to be conditioned to eat these types of processed treats. You can still include the commercially made treats but these healthy options will give you an additional way to reward them. We used our crate to train our dog and keep her in it when we were gone for small amounts of time. She would generally fall asleep in her crate and curl up with the pillows and toys that we had left for her. As a puppy, she found comfort and shelter in her crate. She often ran to it with her treat and ate it there so that no one would bother her. I worked from home and would often keep her in a crate in my office as I worked. Condition her to allow us to touch and mess with her paws. Doing this has helped with being able to clip her toenails, trim her paw hair, and inspect for other issues regularly. We also did the same with her teeth. We often looked inside her mouth and messed around with her teeth to get her used to it. I started brushing her teeth when she was young and this has all helped to maintain her teeth over the years. We have no issues opening up her mouth and inspecting areas, and cleaning areas that need to be cleaned. I brush her teeth regularly and starting young was a key to making it possible. However, it would have probably been better to opt for this type of training from a professional. We are self-learners so we chose to learn on our own. If you have a location in your area that offers basic obedience school, which can often be done with a group of people and their dogs , then sign up for it. It is important to remember that a puppy associates a reward or a disciplinary action with its behavior in the past 3 seconds. Waiting longer than 3 seconds to reward or discipline is very confusing to a puppy. You cannot stop this behavior, but you can certainly direct your puppy to chew upon acceptable items until this phase passes at about a year of age. The only way puppies know how to play is the typical wrestling, biting, chasing, tackling, pulling, and nipping they do with littermates. In the absence of littermates, you and your family suddenly become the littermates. Repeat this same disciplinary action a total of three times in a row.
