An hour later, the puppy has been running around the house, chugged a bunch of water, pees in the house again, and it starts all over… So how do we stop this cycle from happening? Step 1: Take Them Outside Often Some people recommend taking your puppy outside every 20 minutes, while others recommend every hour. The point is, take your puppy outside often before they need to go. Puppies can hold their bladder for about an hour per their age in months, so a two-month-old puppy can hold it for about two hours, a three-month-old puppy can hold it for about three hours, and so on. But now that playtime is over they suddenly remember they have to pee and this nice carpet looks like the perfect spot! You can use this to your advantage by taking them to the same spot every time. To stop this, you need to clean up accidents with an enzymatic cleaner , not regular soap and water. One issue that many people make we made it, too is praising them too loud and too soon, and interrupting them. Then grab them and bring them outside to their spot and if they finish going, praise them like normal for going outside. So if you do all of the steps above, how long should it take for your puppy to be potty trained? All puppies are different, but it can take two weeks to a few months for your golden retriever puppy to be potty trained. So they eventually pick what they think is an ideal spot and go potty out of necessity. We all know that puppies pee-a LOT! It seems like they have tiny little bladders. But how long can they hold it before they have to go? Usually, puppies can hold it for somewhere around an hour per month of age. So if your puppy is one month old, one hour, two months old, two hours, three months old, three hours, etc. You just take them outside to go potty and praise them when they go outside. You just take your pup outside before it has time to realize they need to potty. Instead, it ensures that your pup goes outside and never gets the idea that going inside is acceptable. Most pup parents screw up by not taking their pups outside frequently enough, so they have accidents in the house. They go on to get mad at the puppy who has no idea why their owner is scolding them. A little while later, after the pup has drank a bunch of water or wolfed down a ton of food and then had a good romp, the puppy goes in the house again and starts the process all over again. Some say every hour, while others say every 20 minutes. This means to potty train your puppy quickly, you should avoid these accidents entirely and keep ahead of them. This is NOT playtime! Puppies have the attention span of goldfish, so even though they went outside with the initial intention of going potty, they can completely forget why they came outside when they start playing and then just not go. Instead, you can walk around in circles around the area or pace. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage for you. Golden Retrievers were originally bred to be hunting dogs, which means they come equipped with an intensely strong sense of smell. Neither soap and water nor regular household cleaners are going to work, no matter what exaggerated claims they make about their odor-fighting power. The reason enzymatic cleaners work is that they chemically break down the odors and destroy them. Golden Retrievers respond really well to positive reinforcement. In fact, they eat it up. They love making you happy! You should be vigilant about supervising your puppy, and not just for potty training reasons. Crate training your Golden Retriever puppy is a great idea. Remember to praise them for going potty outside! Step 5: Handle and Clean Up Accidents Properly The unfortunate truth of potty training is that there will inevitably be accidents. If you catch them in the middle of going potty in the house, find a kind way to startle them. Say it quickly, clearly, and use a voice a little louder than your usual speaking voice. If your puppy finishes going potty outside, then you should praise them and maybe give them a treat. How long does it take to potty train a Golden Retriever puppy? Every puppy is different, and so is their learning speed. You can expect it to take anywhere from two weeks to a couple of months to potty train your Golden Retriever puppy. This can include things like barking, pawing, biting, or nipping. My Heidi grumbles at me. Sitting by the front door or scratching at it. I once had a dog that would go stand at the door and wag his tail when he had to go. It can be a really frustrating process for everyone involved. There will be mistakes, made by both your puppy and you. Depending on your puppy and your training techniques, it can take somewhere between 2 weeks and a couple of months to potty train a Golden Retriever puppy. Because Golden Retrievers are large breed dogs, they tend to pick up potty training faster than smaller breeds. Your puppy can only hold their bladder for around one hour per each month of age. So, if your puppy is 3 months old, you can expect that they can hold it for around 3 hours. Plan to wake up throughout the night to let your puppy out. Adopt the NOAH potty training strategy. And take your puppy outside before you think they have to go. This means letting them out every 30 minutes. Any time your puppy has an accident inside, clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner to eliminate the odor. If you happen to catch your puppy having an accident in progress, interrupt the action, and take the puppy outside. If your puppy resumes going potty outside, then praise and reward them. Praise and reward your Golden Retriever puppy every time they go potty outside, or where you want them to go. Pay attention to your puppy and learn the warning signs that your puppy needs to go. There will be a learning curve. For instance, some puppies prefer grass over things like dirt and mulch. Once you figure that out, you can take your puppy to a nice grassy place to potty. Crate training goes hand-in-hand with potty training. Use the NOAH strategy and try to avoid accidents in the house at all costs. This will make the process go a lot quicker. And lastly, learn the warning signs that your puppy provides to let you know that they need to go potty. There is nothing cuter than a puppy… until it makes that first hot, steamy mess on your new Persian rug. Potty-training frustrations have formed more than a few wedges between new pet parents and their fur babies. Fortunately, with a bit of knowledge, consistency and patience, spending time on your knees scrubbing up pet stains can be a thing of the past! Training Methods to the Madness There are four popular house-training methods utilized by owners: Crate training Constant-supervision Umbilical-cord training. Some people stick to one method, while others use a combination of these different approaches to best suit their lifestyle. Crate Training Crate training works on two genetic principles: the safety of a den and the need to keep it clean. When the pups are old enough, they learn to eliminate outside of their den. Your puppy has these same genetic rules in his brain: the den is a safe place and it needs to be kept clean. Crates utilize these instinctual rules. Therefore, if you put your puppy in the crate, he learns to hold his bladder until you take him to the appropriate spot. The crate is a tool to utilize any time you cannot actively watch your puppy. When your puppy is out, you MUST supervise him at all times. Any time he has an accident in the house, this sets your training back. Some people feel that crate training is cruel. Crates are simply tools. Crate training gives you a break. So go take that bubble bath without fear of an accident! Crate training means no indoor messes to clean up, and no indoor potty smells to trigger repeat performances after being attracted by the scent. When puppies get used to sleeping in their own filth, they lose this natural instinct to keep their crates clean. If crate training is only used to confine your puppy for long periods of time, he may associate it with negative things — such as isolation. Make sure you use the crate in positive ways so your pup associates comfort and good things, such as food, with the crate — not just being left alone. Who Should Use Crate Training? Paper Training Paper training teaches a puppy to go to the bathroom on paper or puppy pads. This allows you to control where your puppy piddles. Begin by putting the puppy in a confined area of the house with tile flooring for easy clean up. Puppies like to eliminate on soft places, so putting paper down gives them this solution. Put paper or puppy pads on all hard surfaces. Your puppy will avoid eliminating on his bed and will use the paper, since it covers all other surfaces. Once he gets the idea, you can slowly begin eliminating the paper, starting with material closest to the bed. Leave a small piece of slightly soiled paper where you want your puppy to continue to eliminate. This utilizes the principle that puppies like to eliminate where they smell their previous offerings. The goal is for your puppy to learn to go only on the paper. If you want to eventually have your puppy eliminate outside, you can then slowly move the paper towards the door, and then put some paper outside. When your puppy goes to the paper inside, you can open the door and let them go on the paper outside. You then slowly take away the inside paper until they are going to the door to use only the outside paper. Cons of Paper Training If your goal is to get your puppy to eliminate outside, paper training can lengthen house training because your dog is taught to go inside the house first and you then have to basically re-train them. You also have a lot of stinky messes to clean up. Who Should Use Paper Training? Paper training gives your puppy room to play, while still allowing him to eliminate without the need for owner intervention. Constant-Supervision Training Constant-supervision training means that you never take your eyes off your puppy. You learn how to identify when you puppy needs to go, and at the first signal of circling or sniffing you scoop up your fur kid and take him to his potty spot in the yard. This training method requires a lot of intense observation and is best suited for only the most vigilant of owners. Pros of Constant-Supervision Training Your pup has a lot more freedom, and you are there for his every action. When you turn your back for a second — and you will — your puppy will sneak off and make a mistake in the house. This method can take longer than crate training. You must have the time to completely devote to your puppy during the housebreaking period, or you will be cleaning up a lot of messes on your carpet. Constant-supervision training may be best if you have plenty of time to devote solely to the new addition. You must also be constantly home during the potty-training period. You still watch your puppy during his every waking moment, but you use a six-foot leash to keep him tethered to you. You then watch for the signals that your puppy needs to go and take him outside. Pros of Umbilical-Cord Training You only need a leash to start the training, and you can also train your puppy to walk on the leash at the same time. Your puppy gets the exposure and socialization that comes with going everywhere with you. Cons of Umbilical-Cord Training You must have your puppy tied to you at all times, which can be difficult. This can be dangerous if they get caught up in something. If you like constant-supervision training, but want the added security of not losing track of your pup, umbilical-cord training may be a better option. Again, you must be able to keep your puppy with you wherever you go during the day. Your puppy is not eliminating in the house to be spiteful. Do NOT personalize this process. At 8 weeks, most puppies cannot last past two hours. At 12 weeks, this time extends to three hours. At 16 weeks, puppies can wait up to four hours between potty breaks. Punishing a puppy when you find the mess is not helpful and damages your relationship. If you find a mess, simply clean it up. Puppies operate on schedules. When you adapt to the same schedule, you can anticipate their needs and set them up for success. Puppies potty after a long nap, after a meal and after a good play session. They will also need to go out first thing in the morning and right before bed. Your puppy will give you signals when they need to go , such as moving away from you, circling, sniffing or squatting. Puppies tend to go back to the same place they have soiled before. If you do have an accident in the house, you must eliminate all traces of the odor to avoid a repeat offender. Reward your puppy for going to the bathroom where you want. If you catch them in the act of making a mess in the wrong place, distract them, and then pick them up to take them to the proper location to finish. With consistency, they begin to make the word association. The best way to house train a puppy for you may be sticking to one plan, or utilizing multiple approaches to achieve a perfectly house-trained pet. With a little guidance and a lot of love, you and your puppy will find the right balance of a well-behaved dog and an unsoiled Persian rug! This series contains everything a Golden owner needs to know on the subject and should have your puppy or dog toilet trained in the fastest, most effective and painless way for all involved. We strongly recommend reading through the whole series before you begin, to give yourself the skills and knowledge for the greatest chance at speedy success. Tell your golden what a good boy or girl it is and offer a treat right after the deed is done. Recommended Videos Be consistent If you want to teach your golden to go outside, you must be consistent. Set an alarm for certain times of the day to go out, so your golden has plenty of chances to get it right. Be realistic about how long your golden can hold it. That will allow you plenty of time to help your puppy make the transition to following the rules of your house. Use the potty command To help ensure your golden does its business, add in the potty command. Each time your dog eliminates after the command, offer praise and treats. It could take some consistent practice for it to go outside, and it may arrive in stages. Your puppy may have trouble at night for a little bit until it understands the schedule and is able to make better decisions. If you find that your puppy is having a lot of trouble getting the command, take a look at your process. Are you expecting your puppy to go too long between potty breaks? Are you inconsistent with your praise or timing? Sometimes, a simple change in your process could finally help your pet over that hurdle. How do I train my golden retriever? Offer praise and treats each time your puppy is successful. This is unhealthy and dangerous. Your puppy will need time to get things right. If you only punish your puppy, it may hide to go to the bathroom to avoid the punishment. The training process may take patience, but goldens are highly trainable dogs. Your puppy is ready to be part of the family and needs a little encouragement to understand the rules and behavior you want to see. Editors' Recommendations.

When bringing a new Labrador Retriever into your home, it is important to know if you are getting a purebred or if you are getting a mixed Labrador. Can Labradors have blue eyes? All brown Labradors have blue eyes when they are born. When they are about 4 months old, their blue eyes change to hazel or brown. Labradors, according to what kind of Labrador they are, will have different colored eyes. A chocolate lab will have hazel or brown eyes; a yellow lab will have brown eyes, and a black labrador will also have brown eyes. Even though it is very rare, some Labrador Retriever dogs will have green or yellow-green eyes. When a puppy is born, its eyes stay closed for usually up until 14 days. Their color will start to show up, even though it might not completely take over the whole eye at this point. To start with, Labrador puppies have blue eyes. Until they have pigment, puppy eyes are blue for a week or two after they open. About a month old, you can start to see the final eye color forming, and it will take another two months until the pigment is fully developed. If you are thinking about getting a Labrador but you do not know what color Lab to get, here are some tips of what is different between all of the different Labs. Each of these types of Labrador has been associated with different jobs. Yellow Labrador The Yellow Labrador is associated with being a guide dog for people that are blind. This type of Labrador usually has a very good personality and is known to be easy to train and to love everyone that they meet. Even though Yellow Labradors are often times made to be guide dogs, these types of dogs are also very good at just being a pet. These Labs are different only because they have an orange tint to their coats. Even though they do not have their own color category, they are considered to be part of the Yellow Lab group. Even though it is considered a Yellow Lab, many breeders will refer to it as a Fawn Labrador. Chocolate Labrador Chocolate Labradors are known for being either pet dogs or dogs that are show dogs. Chocolate Labrador dogs are known for being show dogs in circuses and in the ring for many years. Now though, Chocolate Labradors are known to be good hunters. Many of the owners have seen a difference in what their Chocolate Labradors can do and many of them have begun to win awards. Black Labradors Black Labradors are known for being good hunting dogs. The great thing about Black Labradors is that they have become very amazing companions and they are perfect pets. Even though we think they are very cute, they are one of the least picked Labrador colors out of all of the other Labradors. Beyond the three popular Labrador Retrievers, there are other Labs that are not as common. The Silver Labrador has come about because they have had their genes diluted which causes some people to not want to have this type of Lab. It is important that you talk to the breeder or our vet before you decide to purchase a Lab that has diluted genes. Even though choosing a certain color is a preference, the real question should be if you want to get a show or a working Labrador. A show Labrador will most likely be a little smaller because and will not be as muscular as working Labradors. They will be lighter, and they will not be as hard of workers as working dogs. A working Labrador is going to be larger and more muscular. If you are looking for a Labrador to be your partner in activities such as playing and long-distance running, then having a working dog will be a better choice for you. Should I Get a Rescue Labrador? Anytime that you are able to get a rescue dog, it is better than purchasing from a breeder. The first reason is that these dogs that are at rescue centers need a forever home. If you decide to take a rescue, you are giving the dog to have a happy life for the rest of its life. Another reason to get a rescue Labrador is if you are looking for a dog that is past its puppy stage and is in adulthood. Rescue dogs will love their new homes and they will work hard to make sure that you are pleased with them, making their life better and making them easier to train and get used to their new home. Rescue dogs are loveable and happy when they get in their new homes because they are desperately looking for a forever family to call their own. Labrador retrievers can be a variety of colors, but most of them have the same type of body. They are considered to be medium-to-large dogs, and they are known for the dual coat that they have. Labrador retrievers have large bodies, up to 24 inches long, and some of them are as heavy as 80 pounds. Labrador retrievers have long legs and webbed feet. Labrador retrievers have medium-sized ears that hang down and a thick tail. They are covered with short hair that sheds a lot in the winter and in the summer months to help them stay healthy and warm. Most Labrador Retriever dogs are very popular because of their amazing personalities. Most Labs are known for being loving, kind, patient, fun, happy, eager, energetic, caring, and loyal. Labrador Retrievers love to play and be energetic. They crave attention and being around their humans. Most Labrador retrievers are able to get along with other animals and pets because they love to be sociable and to get to know new people and other animals. Even though puppies and Labrador Retrievers can be a little bit destructive, if you learn to understand their personality and give them a lot of exercise, your Labrador puppy will learn to be calm and make an amazing pet. Since Labrador retrievers are so large, they are very active. It is important that you take time out of your day to make sure that your Labrador has plenty of exercise and fun. As a rule of thumb, most Labrador dogs that are adults, need to have at least an hour and a half of exercise on a daily basis. If you find that you are not able to give your Labrador the exercise that he or she needs, you will find that your dog will become bored, agitated, and will have a lot of extra energy. This can lead to your Labrador being aggressive and destructive. Choosing the right Labrador Retriever should not be based on what color Labrador you want or based on his or her eye color, but it is important to figure out if you want to have a show dog, a working dog, or just a pet. All of these things can determine what type of dog you are getting. Sometimes, people are looking to be helpful ,and purchasing a Labrador Retriever from a rescue home can be very beneficial both to the Lab and to their new home. Rescue dogs sometimes have the best personalities, and if you want a dog that will be forever grateful, then get a rescue dog. Black and yellow labradors will have brown eyes, and you will find that chocolate labradors can have a mix between Brown and Hazel. Of course, you will see some variations as this is only natural. Brown eyes can vary slightly between a dark brown and light brown color. There are different proportions of green, amber, and brown in hazel eyes. You may see a chocolate Labrador with green eyes toward the other end of the spectrum. This is when you might notice the chocolatey tones making their way through. The process, however, takes time and does not occur overnight. Conclusion Similarly, there are some Labradors that have green or yellow-green eyes. In fact, it is a game of diluted genes. When a puppy will be born, its eyes will be closed for about 14 days. At this stage, their eye color remains mostly blue. Chocolate lab blue eyes can be noticed properly at the age of weeks old. At this time, you can predict the actual coming color of your Labradors. It is often seen that blue-eyed chocolate labs carry a high price. Mostly, these come for show dogs in circuses or in the ring for many purposes. One of the best qualities of Chocolate Labradors is that they are great hunters. Labrador with blue eyes is the main example of poor genetics. As per basic breed standard, friendly eyes come in terms of good temperament, alertness, and intelligence. Features of a Perfect Chocolate Lab Their eyes should be well apart and in medium size instead of protruding. At the time of birth, their eye color should be brown in yellow and black Labs but in the category of Chocolate Labs, it must be hazel or brown. Eyes should be in normal size and not too small or set close together. It is confirmed that the green, hazel, or golden eyes of Labs make them an outstanding breed. Also, many people love different coat colors including light chocolate and dark chocolate color. Conclusion When a Labrador Retriever puppy is born, apart from its coat color, your Lab will have blue eyes. With the passage of time and as the puppies grow, their eye color starts changing from blue to their permanent color. Normally, blue-eyed chocolate labs remain for weeks. In fact, there are very few ways for dogs to have blue eyes, and none of them occur naturally in the Labrador breed. But can you picture their eyes without looking at a photo? Chocolate Lab eye color Eye color in Labradors falls broadly into two categories: brown, and hazel. Of course, a little natural variation is allowed between individuals. So brown eyes can vary from dark espresso to warm sepia, and everything in between. And hazel eyes can have varying proportions of green, amber and brown in them. At the furthest possible end of the spectrum, you might even occasionally meet a chocolate lab with green eyes. This is true of the chocolate English Labrador belonging to show lines, and the American Chocolate brown Lab bred from working lines. When there is lots of melanin in the eye it absorbs light, and we see the color brown. When there is very little melanin, light scatters around the tissues of the iris instead, and we perceive that scattered light as being blue. Green, yellow, grey and amber eyes are caused by an intermediate amount of melanin, so that we see a mix of both phenomena. There are four ways dogs can have so little pigment in their eyes that they appear blue, but none of them are associated with Labradors. The blue eye gene Some dogs carry a specific gene for blue eyes called ALX4, which determines the amount of pigment in the eyes independently of the genes determining coat color. Huskies are a well-known example of a breed carrying this gene. Merle coloring Merle coat coloring is closely associated with blue eyes. Dogs with the merle gene have patches of diluted pigment in their coat, and often one or two blue eyes. Common examples include Australian Shepherds and Great Danes. Albinism Albinism is a genetic condition which inhibits pigment formation anywhere in the body. Albino dogs have white fur, and blue or pink eyes. Dogs with white patches covering one or both eyes are also less likely to make pigment in those irises. What about Lab with blue eyes? They are highly pigmented dogs, and that includes their eyes! However, some Labradors with the color dilution gene do make less pigment than others. Silver Labs are chocolate Labs with the color dilution gene. Their coat is lighter brown than a traditional chocolate Lab — think more chocolate milkshake than chocolate brownie. Their eyes are lighter too — usually somewhere between amber and pale green. Baby chocolate Lab with blue eyes All Labrador puppies are born with blue eyes to begin with. The earliest you might start to see their final eye color appearing is about a month old, and it can take a further two months for the pigment to finish developing. They could have inherited the blue eye gene from a Husky ancestor and combined it with the genes for a brown coat. Or, they could have inherited the merle gene from a merle ancestor. If they have the merle gene they will also have a merle pattern coat, so have a look for tell tale patches of dilute fur color. What about a blue Labrador with blue eyes? Blue Lab puppies are something our readers often ask about, meaning dogs with grey fur. Could this be an alternative route to a Labrador with blue eyes? Blue dogs are black dogs with color dilution. Black Labs with the dilution gene are known as charcoal rather than blue. They are not terribly common, and their pedigree status is often subject to heated debate. Use tab to navigate through the menu items. Can chocolate Labradors have blue eyes? This is a very popular question here at Ruffwood Labs. The chocolate Labrador Retriever, initially known as the "ugly duckling" is now among one of the most in-demand dog breeds. With his endearing personality and willingness to please; the chocolate, along with yellow, fox red, and black Labrador, have won first place among the hearts of millions of dog lovers. History of the breed The chocolate Labrador Retriever was admitted to the breed long after the yellow and black Labrador. It was not until the twentieth century that these dogs were recognized in the United States. Until that time both chocolate and yellow were considered outcast. These colors, when compared to the black Labrador, were not considered to be "show quality," when it came to exhibitions. The chocolate color in Labs is not a simple recessive gene. It is even more difficult for breeders to determine a pattern to constantly produce chocolate colored Labs with the same dark shading and color intensity. Many geneticists think that this breed is produced through the action of partial dominant genes. The temperament of a chocolate Labrador Like all Labradors, the chocolate-colored ones have a soft and sweet behavior. The eyes are the passage to the soul of a Labrador. Friendly and loyal, the eyes of a Lab tell the story of this attractive breed. Raised to hunt, recover and rescue, this dog has resilience and energy to spare, which makes it a good hunting partner. Easy to train, these Labradors excel in field trials, agility and obedience. Stable and reliable, this breed is notable as rescue and search canines, assistance for the physically disabled and guide dogs for the blind. His intelligence, kindness, and ability to adapt, make him popular as a family pet. Labradors are among the most popular dog breed in the world. Eye Color Any dog breed can have almost any color eyes. It mostly depends on their genetics. However, for a Labrador to have blue eyes, the genetics has to be very poor. According to basic breed standard Friendly eyes means the dog will have a good temperament, alertness, and intelligence. Yellow or black eyes are undesirable as they give a harsh expression. An eye rim without pigmentation is considered a disqualification. It is hard to disagree, that the green, hazel or golden eyes of the Lab give it a truly outstanding presence. And the different shading in the coats from the light chocolate to the dark chocolate color attracts many owners to the Labrador breed. Ruffwood Labs would love to pair you with your next best four-legged friend, no matter what eye color or coat color you prefer. Post not marked as liked2 Featured Posts.

Your Labrador puppy is full of energy and enthusiasm. Because he descends from a long line of hunting and working dogs, he needs firm direction, love and consistency to reach his potential. Training and Socializing Step 1 Set boundaries as soon as you bring your Labrador puppy home. This breed is excessively playful and curious. Step 2 Enroll your little Lab in a puppy kindergarten class as soon as possible. Step 3 Exercise your Lab as often as possible, but at least twice a day for 30 minutes each time. Labs are high-drive dogs and they need a chance to burn off excess energy. You can avoid many behavior problems just by giving your Lab adequate exercise. Step 4 Train your Lab to respond to the basic dog obedience commands. He should sit, stay, heel, down and come on command. This ensures that you can control your Lab in any situation just by issuing a verbal command. Step 5 Use positive reinforcement for good behavior and avoid scolding. Labs love pleasing their owners and they will do just about anything to get in your good graces. If your puppy is acting out and demanding your attention, turn away and ignore him. When he minds, praise him, pet him and give him treats. Step 6 Expose your puppy to new things. Take him to the dog park. Teach him to sit while children pet him. Take him for rides in the car. Labs should learn social manners early on. Diet, Health and Grooming Step 1 Visit your veterinarian within two days of bringing your puppy home. Your puppy will need regular vaccinations to keep him healthy. Step 2 Feed your Labrador puppy a high quality large-breed puppy food for the first six months of his life. After that, ask your vet about switching him over to an adult food to ensure healthy bone growth. Step 3 Brush your Labrador at least once a week with a rounded-bristle dog brush. About twice a year, your Lab will shed heavily for about three weeks. Brush him daily during that time. Labs can have sensitive skin and frequent bathing can irritate it, which can leave your little guy scratching up a storm. More Articles. Labs can be a handful, and they definitely need a lot of exercise. Research the temperament and activity levels of a labrador retriever. Then, consider the following: [1] X Research source Can I give him walks? Labs need at least one, sometimes two, walks a day. Can I provide for him? Labs need food, toys, food and water bowls, bones, beds, etc. That can cost a lot of money. Can I give him exercise? Labs not only need walks, but play time. Throwing a ball around for half an hour every day, along with one or two walks, can often be a hassle. If you are the only one taking care of the dog, he's not going to consider the other family members his pack. If one day you are gone and they are left to take care of him, he might not be comfortable. Everyone in the family has to have some kind of connection with a Lab, especially because Labs are loyal. Can I give him love? What Labs need most is love. Will you be mad if he licks your face? Will you let him cuddle with you? Labs are caring, loving dogs. If you don't pet them or hug them, they won't think you appreciate them being there. You need to make sure he knows you will always love and care for him. Will you buy a shelter dog, a dog from the pet store, or from a backyard breeder someone who breeds dogs from their own home. Because shelters often have an overload of dogs who need homes, their dogs are often free or available at a minimal cost which covers vaccinations, worming, and incidental care. However, it is important to understand that shelter pets may have been strays or abandoned, and might have health or trust issues. It is prudent, therefore, to ask the shelter workers if they know the background of the dog. A dog from the pet store is usually a safe bet, even though they can cost more money and, sometimes, a lot of money. Purchasing from a qualified, registered breeder will ensure quality and also gives you someone who will answer your questions when needed. Check with the relevant dog breeder's association for suggested breeders and to be certain that the breeder is registered. Backyard breeders may be cheaper, but they may not be running a legal operation and may not have the dog's best interests at heart. Always find out first if the breeder is reputable. If the Lab you want is the runt, he might be able live in a big apartment. If the Lab you have your eyes on is one of the biggest dogs in the litter, it will be better for the dog if you live in a house with a fenced yard. If he has an ongoing medical condition, it is prudent to ensure that you are close to a vet or pet hospital. Keep in mind that all Labs need a large play space such as a yard or park. Be sure to look at the little things that won't affect your relationship with him but can still be an important part of your personal choice, such as: [3] X Research source Color. Top Picks For Our Dogs Preparing Your Home For A Puppy You should treat the preparation of your home for the arrival of a new puppy in much the same way as you would for the arrival of a baby because the process is almost identical. You must be ready to provide every little thing your puppy needs in life, making sure they have water, are fed, comfortable, happy, catered for and safe. To achieve this there are 4 main things that you need to do: Go shopping for equipment and supplies Puppy proof your home and garden to make sure your puppy stays safe Set up an area for your puppy to sleep and spend time in when you cannot supervise them Decide on the rules and routines required to successfully raise a puppy Without such preparation, things will be difficult. A Nutritious Puppy Food The most important supply needed for a new puppy is a highly nutritious puppy food. Hopefully your puppy came from a responsible breeder who was feeding them a high quality, complete and nutritious food. If so, you should ask what they were feeding, stock up on and continue feeding this if possible. If not, then puppies are incredibly active, growing fast and developing bone, muscle and more every day. Because of this they need almost double the calories, more protein and have different nutritional needs to mature adult dogs. Furthermore, they have far smaller mouths than adult dogs so puppy food comes in smaller chunks more suited to their size. Click here to see our recommendations for the best puppy food for labs Bowls for Food And Water There is a bewildering array of dog bowl choices out there so choosing the best can be difficult. Looks and design aside, I recommend going for stainless steel bowls because they are long-lasting, cannot be chewed and are very easy to clean. I also recommend buying bowls with heavy rubber bottoms so they stay rooted to the spot and are harder to spill or flip over. Unless of course you buy bowls in a stand, then these problems are already solved. A Puppy Crate And Bedding A good crate is one of the most beneficial things you can provide for the good of yourself and your puppy. First of all, supply some bedding to place inside for your puppy to sleep on. My recommendation for this is VetBed. Many puppies can chew and ingest normal bedding which can result in medical emergencies and VetBed is the most durable bedding on the market. During these times you need to provide a larger, but still safe enclosure to confine your puppy. You might also like to buy a plastic sheet and some puppy pads or use lots of old newspaper for them to use as a potty in your absence. Puppy Chew Toys Puppies chew. A lot. And they seem to prefer chewing phones, footwear and TV remotes more than anything else. Just make sure whatever toys you do buy are suitable for a puppy as many will be too large for their little mouths to begin with. Interactive Puppy Toys So you can play games with your puppy, provide exercise and mental stimulation, you will want to buy a few toys that encourage the two of you to interact. Balls for throwing and chasing, soft toys and ropes for playing tug, other toys for fetch, there are many available. You will also need a collar to provide a place to attach an all important ID tag. ID Tag An ID tag is an essential means to be reunited with your puppy should the worst happen and you somehow lose them or they run away. Clicker A clicker is an extremely useful tool used during training as a reward marker that dramatically improves the timing of communication between you and your puppy when you want to reward a behavior. Although not essential, I do highly recommend you use one. Puppy Training Treats Tasty food treats are the go-to reward used during training so you will want to make sure you always have a good stock at hand. They need to feel happy with being bathed, happy having their coat and teeth brushed, their feet touched, nails clipped and having their eyes and ears inspected. To do so, you should fake going the process, getting them used to being handled, the sight and feel of the tools and so on. To achieve this, you will need to buy and get them used to the following items: Dog shampoo Combs and brushes suitable for a Labrador Scissors Cotton balls Toothbrush Use these tools right away and often, and give your puppy praise and tasty treats as you go so they form positive associations with grooming. Puppy Proof Your Home and Garden The process of puppy proofing your home is very much like baby proofing before the arrival of a child. Except a puppy is far more curious, active and destructive and can get themselves into far more trouble. A puppy is a new-born. Everything is a toy and they will run and pounce and jump and chew on anything in their environment. So before you bring your puppy home you simply must make it safe for them. For things you cannot move skirting boards, table legs etc. To keep them safe while still providing an area for them to play in and stretch their legs, you want to restrict their access to a single room, or otherwise create an enclosed space for them. To do so, either buy a pet barrier or baby gate that goes across a doorway to restrict them to an easy to clean and safe room, or buy an exercise pen puppy pen to create an enclosed space in another room. I also strongly recommend buying a crate for many reasons, but initially, mostly just to provide the perfect place for them to sleep. I shall discuss crate training a little later in this article. All of this must be decided BEFORE you get your puppy home because consistency is a key part of raising a puppy successfully. Everyone must enforce and live by the same rules for your puppy to thrive. Initially they have no idea how you want them to behave, or how and when they can expect the things they want and need in life. The more consistent everybody is with the puppy, the quicker they will learn all this stuff and the happier everyone will be. So decide and write down if necessary when your puppy will have all their needs met, make sure everybody knows who is responsible for each task and make sure everybody knows the rules. You might think the collection and journey home with your new puppy is no big deal, but there are many things can go wrong. Therefore, you should never take a puppy before 8 weeks old. During the first 8 weeks, a puppy learns a lot from their mother and litter-mates: Bite inhibition, canine body language, acceptable play and interaction with other dogs and how to accept discipline. Things you will find it very hard to teach them later yourself. The flip side of this is that the 7 to 14 week stage is the most impressionable for a puppy, where they bond strongest with people and must be socialized to all the sights, sounds and smells of the world so they grow up confident and comfortable with their surroundings. So anyway, for the journey home there a few things you need to consider: Safety in the car, the need for water and toilet breaks and the possibility your puppy will be sick. Having a loose puppy in the car presents a very real danger of leading to a crash, they can easily climb out of a box and now is not the time to use a harness and car safety belt. If the crate is small enough you can place it on a front or rear passenger seat and secure it with the seat-belt, or you may have to place it in the trunk of your car. Fully line the crate with absorbent paper in case there are any accidents, this will keep most of the mess off your puppy and make cleaning easier. And finally, place a chew toy or two in the crate to keep your puppy occupied. If you have another person to help you, your puppy can ride home in their lap if the journey is short. They must be under your passengers control. They will also need to potty every half or so. Therefore, you should plan breaks along the way every 30 minutes or so. Stop the car, allow them to drink, then wait for them to wee before setting off again. When you stop, make sure your puppy is on leash and tightly held by someone before letting them out of the car. And as an extra precaution, carry your puppy and only put them down to do their business, then carry them back into the car. Take with you some towels, plastic bags, kitchen roll and deodorizer to take care of any accidents. And when driving, take all corners slowly, and accelerate and brake gently. If your puppy is on a passengers lap, they will be able to see some warning signs that puppy is about to be sick: Their lips will curl, they will excessively salivate and then eventually start to heave. When your passenger spots these signs, they can place a thick towel beneath the puppy to catch everything and avoid a mess in your vehicle. When bringing home a new puppy, make sure you collect them and then drive straight home. Your puppy is having the most stressful day of their short life so far, try not to make it harder than it already is by taking them to strange places and passing them around to strangers to say hello. You want to get them home quickly so they can start the process of settling in as soon as possible. Whether this is inside on paper, or a spot outside, as soon as you arrive home carry them there, set them down and wait for them to do their business before doing anything else. This might take 30 seconds or it might take 10 minutes, but patiently wait and when they go, praise them profusely. Well done! Shut them in another room away from the puppy as things are intense enough as it is. Explain they have to be calm and gentle during the first introductions. Let them sniff and look around, getting used to the area and their new little world. You can now let people come and say hello. Have people sit or kneel to greet them. Once everybody has said hello, you should stay with your puppy, show interest but stay calm. Allow Your Puppy To Sleep After all the excitement, stress, massive change and huge amount of mental stimulation your puppy has just been through, they will likely need to sleep soon after arriving at your home. So as soon as they either start to look tired, or the introductions to their new living space and family have ended whichever comes first put them to bed for a short while. On the other hand they might feel completely overwhelmed, retreat into themselves and show reluctance to explore. They might slink into a corner silently and sit there watching their new world with wonder but apprehension, before falling asleep for hours. And when it comes to the first night they might sleep right through, or they might cry and whine the whole night. As your puppy begins to get used to everything, their character will start to shine through and you will begin to see their true personalities. Exactly what this will be is different for every puppy…it will be fun for you to find out! And by being the provider of everything they need in life, giving them all that is good, it will only take 2 or 3 days for your puppy to learn to love you and get excited and happy to see you when you turn up. So your task is to set up and stick to these schedules, begin training your puppy and help them to learn how you want them to behave and when they can expect the things they need in life. What should you feed your puppy You should feed your puppy the same food they had at the breeders because an abrupt change in diet almost always leads to stomach upset. Complete and balanced means it has everything a puppy needs, and in the right quantities. So seek out this kind of wording and check the internet for other owners reviews. Puppies need to eat a lot because their rate of growth is very high. For puppies up to 12 weeks, you should divide their daily requirement into 4 portions, for puppies 12 to 26 weeks, feed them 3 times per day and from 26 weeks on feed them twice per day. You should also aim to feed them as close as you can to the same times every day and evenly spaced throughout the day. This will help their body clocks fall into a pattern and will help your house training immensely because they then potty the same times every day. For example: 8 to 12 weeks old, 4 times a day at AM, AM, PM and PM 12 to 26 weeks old, 3 times a day at AM, PM and PM 26 weeks old and ongoing, 2 times a day at and Obviously you can adjust these times to take into account when you get out of bed and to fit around your life. Also… The first few nights have the crate or exercise pen your puppy sleeps in placed in your bedroom. One night move the crate next to the bedroom door. The next night move it outside the door, but leave the door open so they can still see you. The next night further into the hallway. Finally to their eventual resting place. They might take to sleeping on their own OK, they might whine and cry. NEVER go to them to comfort them if they cry, you must only get up to take them to potty and then silently and without fuss put them back into the crate. Rewarding silence and ignoring noise is the only way they will eventually learn to be quiet at night themselves. Any time you cannot closely supervise them, you have to confine them, either in their crate, an exercise pen or a puppy proofed room secured with a barrier across the doorway. The point of confining them as a puppy is so they can enjoy all the freedom in the world once they are an adult. By confining them with treat dispensing chew toys they get rewarded for chewing the right things and develop a chew toy obsession. Confine them now, they form a good chew toy obsession and have no chance of developing bad chewing habits. Then once they are over their adolescent chewing stage you slowly open up the house to them and eventually they can have free roam and be completely trusted. A little sacrifice when young for a better life later. And a second hugely important reason for confining your puppy when you cannot supervise them is for speedier house training. In fact if you read my comments from earlier, you will see you start the very first moment you finish the journey home. In essence, house training is about creating good habits while avoiding bad ones and for the speediest success you want to start immediately. Wherever your puppy is able to potty has the chance of becoming their favored toilet spot for many weeks or months to come. So you want to prevent them pottying inside, and encourage them to potty outside. The main ingredients of a successful house training program are preventing mistakes and praising heavily for doing the right thing. Achieving this is all about schedules, supervision and confinement. Now, your puppy will need to potty anywhere from every 15 to 45 minutes. So to start with, take them outside every 30 minutes and adjust this schedule to suit their natural rhythm. You must also take them outside immediately after they wake up from any sleep, after any eating or drinking, after play and after any heightened excitement. These are times that often lead to a puppy needing to potty so take them outside at these times and you will avoid many mistakes while taking advantage of predictable opportunities to praise them for doing the right thing. In the first week or so, you will likely find your puppy almost instantaneously leaks with little warning. Simply do your best to take them out to potty extremely often so they go in the right place as often as possible. And confine them to a single enclosed room or in an exercise pen for the first week or so to protect your carpets. Crate training goes hand in hand with house training, being one of the best tools to help speed up the process. Therefore, you want to start crate training very early on, after just a few days of getting puppy home, and I personally aim for 9 weeks old to start. I prefer to wait a week or so to avoid them pottying in the crate as much as possible, doing the most I can to preserve their instinct not to soil where they sleep, the instinct that helps most when using a crate for house training. But by all means sleep them in their crate at night if you wish and I do. For more information on crate training your puppy and using it for house training purposes, please see the links below:. When you bring a new puppy home, it's important to keep feeding it the same food that it has been eating at its previous home. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source Talk to the person or organization that you are adopting your puppy from to see what food they are feeding it. They should willingly provide that info and they may even send you home with some if you can't find any to buy. If you want to feed your puppy a different food from what it has been eating, you will need to switch its food over the course of several days. Feed that mix for several days. Finally, you can give the puppy all new food. If you are content to give your puppy the food it was originally eating, it's fine to do that. Every puppy will have different nutritional needs. Because of this, it's a good idea to discuss proper nutrition with your vet. They can suggest great foods to give your puppy and how much it should be eating. Go to source The right portion size depends on the size of your puppy and its metabolism. Ask your vet to teach you how to body score your puppy. Tip: If your vet suggests a specific food but doesn't tell you how much to give your puppy, follow the instructions on the packaging. Doing 3 or 4 feedings per day allows your puppy to get enough nutrients without overwhelming its digestive system with a huge amount of food at once. This is especially important when your puppy is under 6 months old, as they have delicate systems. Go to source Don't just leave the food out all day. Take the food away after the puppy eats for about 10 or 15 minutes. Lab puppies should always have access to fresh water so that they can stay adequately hydrated. Put out a dish of water and dump it out, clean the dish, and refill it daily. Some puppies are really messy with their water dishes. To prevent a mess, try putting the water dish on a tray, so that spilled water won't go right onto the floor. How does it feel to be a new puppy parent? You must be chuffed. Take a look at these first few articles. All the ingredients you need for a happy home. But for now, beside your bed is the best place for your puppy to sleep — it will help them feel safe. Puppies like their crates rather cave-like; we suggest covering it with a blanket to block out light, but keep the front open so that they can see outwards. Make sure to make it snug inside with something like a vet bed or a blanket, or why not take it up a notch with a heat pad or hot water bottle to recreate the feeling of their mother. Nothing feels more comforting than that. Before you head to bed, take your puppy out for one last round of loo-going. Set your bedtime at a later time too — midnight sounds about right. Come back calmly, and place your puppy in the crate and turn out the light. Stuff you should know about Sleep Training your Labrador Your puppy will wake up several times in the night and will need the bathroom at least once! Be prepared for not-so-deep sleeps and tired mornings — just for the first few weeks. Having them sleep next to you is only temporary. Consistency is key! As for you, full nights of sleep will start getting closer and closer. Alone Training How can I teach my Labrador puppy to be ok on their own? Start by feeding your puppy in their crate during meal times. If they seem worried by you leaving, stay in view, and just pop right outside their confinement area. Keep it short and sweet: No need to stay away for long, 60 seconds tops will do for now. Repeat: Do this at least once a day to make progress go steady and smoothly. Socialization Exercises To Do this week Letting your Labrador puppy explore the yard Besides the gnomes and questionable yard furniture you may have, letting your puppy explore your own yard is a great and safe way to start showing them the sounds, lights and wonders of the outside world. Exploring different surfaces exercise Make sure that the surfaces you use are safe — nothing too crazy just yet. Gather surfaces such as An oven tray with a small layer of water A piece of astro turf A carpet tile A large piece of tin foil, cardboard or something crinkly PRO TIP: Set up for this exercise in the room your puppy spends most of their time in — it will help them to feel safe and confident. Pop the surfaces out safely on the floor and allow your puppy to investigate them. Nobody has ever enjoyed walking on those. Remember to be patient! Lucky for you — teaching them their name is easy peasy. Say their name in a happy jolly tone and reward with a treat. Repeat five times, 5 and take a break. Practice this 2 or 3 times a day so they get the hang of it. Teach your puppy to sit Teaching your puppy how to sit is a popular one. The first two are far more common though. Keep using this word when they do the right thing, and then follow it up with a food reward. In puppy logic, stinky means yummy. How to do it Start at home; where there are no distractions. Just make sure to shut off Gogglebox in the background. Recall — How to teach our Labrador puppy to come back when called Your puppy already knows their name at this point, so this should be a walk in the park. How to do it Treats and a cheerful voice will be what works here. Do these exercises before meal times so your puppy is more motivated. Practice this 5 times a day and in 3 different places in your house and yard to get them used to coming to you in all settings. How to do it Show your puppy that you have their favorite toy, and start to get them excited about it. When they show interest, throw it a little bit away from you. They will likely follow it and pick it up. If they do, encourage them back to you with your voice, so remember to sound happy! Swap the toy for a treat or another toy and do the process again. Repeat this about 5 times. Instead create more distance and excitement sounds to get them to come to you — spaniels like to show off, so they will likely want to parade what they have! Always swap the toy for something when they have it, this could be a treat or another toy. Resource guarding occurs when we force puppies to give up items or snatch things out of their mouths. For breeds like Labradors who are designed to want to hold things in their mouths, this is pretty important! Resource guarding is when a dog protects a resource from being taken by someone else — dog or human. For some reason, there is a solid list of things puppies find irresistible: Socks. However, a healthy six-month-old labrador will grow significantly in size. Some of them can weigh up to 50 pounds. For a more balanced diet at six months, you can shift from feeding your puppy three smaller meals per day to two meals a day. To counteract this, you can drop the amount of food and gradually increase it. Setting Your Lab Puppy Up for Successful Potty Training Training an animal to control their bladders until you get outside is no different than potty-training for toddlers. In other words, crate training speeds up the potty-training process for your pet. Effective crate training depends on two things: Praising and rewarding your puppy for relieving itself outside. They come to understand this as a desirable behavior. Preventing your puppy from going to the toilet within the home. So, why is using a crate to train your puppy to go outside so effective? Initially, this should be every hour or so. As labs grow older, you can reduce the frequency as they learn to hold and release independently. Step 2: House Training a Lab Puppy Housetraining or potty-training small labs can be, well, frustrating. As a pet owner, there are simple ways to train your puppy to understand ideal behavior quickly. Instead, they simply forget that they should control it. This helps avoid any issues early on. Keep small labrador puppies off the carpet. How to Feed Your Dog for Optimal Growth Feeding your labrador puppy a balanced diet could be an entire guide all on its own. It can feel overwhelming because you do have many options when it comes to feeding your dog. For example, if you work from home, it would be easy to feed your dog homemade dog food. Similarly, you might work a and yet want to reap the health-related benefits of a raw diet. Make sure to speak to your vet first. You do have choices for what to feed your puppy and you can mix and match these. Popular feeding options for any animal include kibble, wet food, raw food, and home-cooked food. Remember, a puppy is still growing, and they need a complete profile of nutrients and minerals to support their development. There are many commercial brands of dry food or kibble to choose from and you can adjust what you buy based on the ingredients. Do your research and find a brand you trust, with as much bioavailable nutritional content as is helpful. These can harm your puppy. In order to maintain good health and prevent simple ailments, your puppy can also benefit from taking a supplement. Some families choose to mix scraps or raw food with kibble to provide moisture and decrease the amount of food versus the calories consumed. Any veterinarian will tell you that a hard and fast rule is not necessarily the type of food but the amount. Obesity is a condition that can lead to many health issues for this breed. Over-exertion, especially for a puppy, is possible. This includes activities like playing fetch or tug and release. However, breeds that worked as a hunting companion for humans love to be active. Again, this goes back to the strengths of the breed. Keeping up with your puppy could be a task-and-a-half, so in the first months of life, you should be keeping them in your backyard or playing with them at home. As they become house trained and get all their vaccinations, you can turn walks into light jogs or runs if you want. In the long-term, exercise will help keep dogs healthy and disease-free. However, early dog training can eliminate common problems with puppy temperament and help make sure that your fur friend is always as friendly and happy as possible through the years. Puppy socialization simply means making your puppy open to and familiar with new experiences. You want to provide stimulation and encounters with experiences that they will probably face as adults. The window of opportunity to make sure your puppy is always a happy and friendly pooch closes around 14 weeks. Pre-Vaccination Lab Puppy Socialization Any veterinarian will tell you that a puppy is all done with their vaccinations after 12 weeks of age. The main point is to keep your puppy away from other dogs who may not yet be vaccinated or the excrement and markings of other animals that could carry data diseases. You can head to an off-leash dog park to allow them to explore and meet other fur friends. You can also take them beyond your backyard to the countryside to enable them to swim or set up obstacle courses and play with them. Another thing that people forget about is spaying or neutering their dogs. Spaying or neutering your dog could help with behavioral issues and can also reduce the onset of certain health conditions. At the same time, spaying or neutering a puppy too early may also lead to health issues. For many people, this is a worthwhile and even enjoyable trade-off. A happy, sociable dog is always the result of consistent training. Training your dog is a significant aspect of their early years. The different stages include: Get it — Using positive reinforcement, trainers will help your dog carry out actions without commands. Teach it — This stage harnesses the progress you made in the previous stages. Your dog now knows the word and the action that goes with it. Proof it — Proofing is where many people get stuck. Your dog will learn to listen and obey commands at this stage even when they are engaged in other things. Maintain it — Consistently using the techniques you learned to keep your dog following the same desirable behavior. All breeds of dogs respond best when you train them. Every labrador retriever relies on their human taking control and showing them how to respond in any situation. You can be sure that if you follow these tips that you will be taking proper care of your new puppy and will be able to make sure that your puppy will live a long and healthy life. Share on.

Here is a table outlining the recommended collar sizes based on the weight of the lab puppies: Weight Range. Collar, Harness, Or Both? Lab puppies start tiny but grow up extremely fast. Every pup grows up at its own tempo. If it has started to get too constricting at that point — either loosen it up if possible or get a new collar. If you get a collar with a lot of resizing leeway, it can last you a few months. This is very easy to judge if you just stick a couple of fingers under the collar. The risk of keeping an overly loose collar on your dog should be clear — the dog will be able to back out of the collar. Many others, however, including a lot of labs, love to back out of their collars whenever possible. Adult Labrador Neck Size So, what size collar will your lab puppy end up wearing when it grows up? If your puppy is smaller than average it may grow into a smaller-than-average adult lab or it may just be a slow grower. Different Types Of Dog Collars For Labs The main non-cosmetic differences between dog collars are in the materials and the fastening mechanism. Plus, they always allow for multiple different size settings. As for materials, these are the basics: Metal — a lot of people love metal, especially for mid-sized to large breeds like Labradors. Leather — this is the classic choice for dog collars. Its main drawback is that it can get stinky over time. This is especially true if your dog loves to swim and Labrador retrievers are a water dog breed. Fabric collars can come in a lot of different designs and compositions. Some of the more colorful ones are especially fun for puppies. Synthetic polyurethane-type materials — these intuitively put off some people but are an excellent choice. Training collars used to be very popular at one point for both puppies and adult dogs. These collars take many different forms — they can be pronged, pinching, and electro-shock collars. Their idea is simple — teach your dog not to pull on its leash with the negative reinforcements of the collar. Dog harnesses today are viewed as a better and safer alternative to training collars. These are used mostly for training and for adult dogs, however. You should start using those as soon as your pup is big enough. CHECK OUT 9 Things that are 4 meters long As your dog grows and begins to reach its adult weight, you can still use the weight method to figure out a rough collar size. When should a puppy first wear a collar? Some puppies may have already been wearing soft breakaway collars for training or to distinguish them from their littermates. This can make training, particularly leash training, much easier in the future. Collar Types There are several collar options available, and picking the right type is often as important as choosing the correct size. Leather collars are durable and stylish. Nylon collars are also comfortable for the dog and are available in a number of colors and patterns. Plastic collars are also available for dogs that tend to swim a lot or are frequently dirty. Harnesses are an excellent training tool for puppies that are just learning to walk on a leash. They can curb bad leash habits, such as pulling. Harnesses can be switched out for a collar as the dog grows, or you can upgrade to an adult harness size. Sharing is caring! It is all rather bewildering, but there is no need to worry! This is where you can find the answers to those questions, and get some ideas and inspiration too. Collars are a great way to identify similar Lab puppies in a litter Labrador Dog Collars and the Law In many parts of the world, dogs must legally wear a collar when out in public. This is usually a disk attached to the collar, with your phone number and name on it. Collars can display IDs in a number of different ways. Some collars come with a brass or stainless steel plate attached to the surface, others have a metal ring for you to attach a tag onto. Others will embroider the ID into fabric or tool it into leather. Are Personalized Dog Collars Safe? But others feel that this is a dangerous thing to do. But most dogs are always supervised when outdoors, and many dogs are also microchipped so proof of ownership is more easily accomplished. Unless your dog is very friendly and spends time outdoors on his own, having his name on his collar is unlikely to put him at risk. Collars as a Fashion Statement A collar is the traditional way of attaching a restraint to a dog, for the purposes of keeping him safe. Before harnesses were invented this was an essential feature of life in a modern world, where cars and other hazards are everywhere. But in many homes and families, a collar has become something of a fashion statement too. A whole industry has arisen to meet the demand for different fabrics and styles. Training Collars for Labs Many people look on a collar, as an aid to training their dog how to walk on a leash. A way to get their dog to tread along nicely next to them, without dragging or pulling them along. They want to choose a collar that will best help them in this goal. Prong collars and pinch collars have been designed that are uncomfortable and even painful when a dog leans into them. The problem of course, is that pulling is often very rewarding for a dog he gets nearer to the destination he likes. So collars usually have to be quite painful if they are to successfully stop the pulling. Collars that can be used to pinch and choke dogs, are becoming less popular, as more and more dog owners want to train without using unpleasant aversives. And fortunately there are now excellent ways of teaching a dog to walk nicely without using collars at all. And in the meantime you might find it helpful to have a strong pulling dog fitted with a body harness that will give you more control without damaging his neck. Before you set off on a Labrador collar shopping expedition, you will need to think about sizes. And to know your Labrador neck size. Labrador Collar Size Not all collars are made in sizes large enough for an adult Lab. And one adult Lab will not have the same neck size as another. If you find it difficult to keep your dog still, just get someone to dip their fingers in some butter and let the dog lick it off while you take his measurements! Collars for adult Labs are usually about an inch wide — this allows enough space for a small ID plaque if desired. What Size Collar for a Lab Puppy? You should be able to fit two or three fingers under it quite easily, but not much more. A collar that is too loose can be slipped by a lively dog very easily. It is also worth considering alternative forms of restraint. Especially for puppies and lively young dogs that can get very sore necks if leashed to a collar. Buying a Harness The breadth of choice in body harnesses for dogs has burgeoned in the last couple of years as people discover how great they are. A body harness is an excellent way to restrain a young dog that has not been taught to walk to heel. It has several advantages over a collar. It is almost impossible for the dog to slip out of. And most importantly, a puppy that wears a harness is not learning to lean into or pull, on his collar. However, we selected them for inclusion independently, and all of the views expressed in this article are our own. This can also help puppies get adjusted to wearing a collar for the majority of the time. However, many vets also recommend including a contact telephone number, in the event your dog goes missing. And if your lab loves swimming, then use cotton collars. These cotton waterproof collars contain polyurethane-like synthetic materials. In addition to being odor-resistant, waterproof collars are easily washable. Our favorite thing about them is that they are usually bright in color, which is something we love about them. Leather Collar — This is a luxurious and traditional collar for dogs that offers the perfect balance of functionality and style. In spite of their higher cost, a leather collar is likely to last for many years to come. Keep in mind that you should only buy a collar made of genuine leather. The leather bonded together consists of scrap leather, which glued together using an adhesive. Although the leather of this type might resemble the feel and appearance of genuine leather, it provides less durability and is dreadful in quality. Dogs, especially those with thick coats that tend to matt around collars, generally preferred to wear collars made of rolled leather. You can choose from a wide range of color choices, designs, and sizes. Lab puppies can wear these on walks as well as at home. The nylon collar is a standard collar that can be worn for many purposes. Neoprene Collar — Neoprene is an extremely flexible rubber material used to make wetsuits, bolstered with nylon mesh to provide extra durability, flexibility, and strength. If your dog spends a lot of time in the water, a neoprene collar is a perfect choice. Biothane Collar — Dogs who enjoy swimming will love biothane collars too. Contains non-toxic materials composed of polyester weave and powder coatings composed of polyurethane or polyvinyl. Neoprene and leather collars are expensive, while biothane collars are more comfortable, easier to wear, and more affordable. A collar needs to be checked every two to three weeks. Look for indentations and signs of wear and tear. The collar should replaced immediately when you notice any defect that may upset the dog or endanger his safety. If it does, your dog will suffer from pain and discomfort. When your puppy is indoors, it is best to remove its collar. It attracts bacteria when it is damp. Additionally, a dog collar not being clipped onto furniture or choking hazards in a crate will be avoided. As a general rule, puppies should be taught to wear a collar and leash around 10 weeks of age. As a result, you will be able to get started in a week or so after they have settled in. FAQs Question 1: Do lab puppies always need to wear collars? Although there are some puppies who seem perfectly happy to wear a neck collar, it is important to consider that wearing one for prolonged periods of time could harm their coat and their skin due to the friction created by the collar. Question 2: Which collar size is best for my puppy? For dogs under 10 pounds, a collar up to 12 inches long is adequate. The collar length should be from 13 to 18 inches for dogs between 26 and 55 pounds. Question 3: Are dogs better off with wide collars? There are many benefits to using wide collars for your dog, including strolling, training , and even playing with. Wider dog collars provide your pup with a better fit around the neck while walking or training. For dogs that like to play rough, a wide collar can provide a better level of safety from other dogs or potential neck injuries. Question 4: Does my labrador puppy need a smaller collar? While many people will just go ahead and get the next size up, that could be a mistake. Make sure you choose a collar that will fit your puppy as he grows into adulthood. Post navigation.

Let me present to you how I think puppy chow should always look: Beautiful, chunky clusters. The puppy chow I grew up with was more like individual pieces of cereal that were completely coated with powdered sugar. It was served room temperature and you ate it one piece at a time. This stays true to the basics but just dials up everything good: the chocolate, the peanut butter, the butter. It gives just a little more excitement with the texture, the shape, the temperature. It makes for supremely satisfying grazing. It is one of the great Midwestern food contributions of the 80s and 90s my roots! Microwave works fine. This is the Midwest. We are not fancy. Melted chocolate goes in with the cereal. Toss with Powdered Sugar Once the cereal is coated, toss it with powdered sugar so each piece is coated and dry enough to touch. Midwestern kids of the 90s hello will agree with me that mixing the chocolate coated cereal in a paper grocery bag is the authentic and proper technique. I mean, is it really puppy chow without the paper bag? But in reality, any big bag ziplock, paper bag, even a big mixing bowl that you can toss very gently so as not to break the cereal will get the job done. I keep it in airtight containers like a lidded plastic food storage container, for example or just in a Ziplock bag. Yes, the fridge works, the counter will even work. Plus, it travels well and makes it last longer. I hope this helps you live a little more lightly in August. How long does this last? In the freezer, this can last for a few months. With this work with other nut butters? This also works well with Sun Butter. Is the paper bag necessary? Nutrition information With only six ingredients, puppy chow muddy buddies is extremely quick and easy to whip up, making it the perfect recipe for the busy holiday season. Puppy chow ingredients This sweet snack mix is made of six super simple ingredients! The best part? You probably have all of the ingredients on hand already. All of the ingredients are staple pantry and fridge items that all have a long shelf life. Rice chex cereal makes the base of this recipe and makes this snack mix super crunchy and addicting. Semi-sweet chocolate chips. Peanut butter gets melted together with the chocolate chips and creates an amazingly creamy mixture that coats the cereal. Use smooth peanut butter — instead of chunky — to ensure even melting. Unsalted butter. Vanilla extract. Powdered sugar. Set aside. Place chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter into a large microwave safe bowl or measuring cup. Melt until smooth, then stir in vanilla extract. Pour chocolate mixture over the cereal and gently stir together. Stir in the powdered sugar. Tips for making puppy chow muddy buddies There are SO many recipes for puppy chow, but I promise you, my recipe is the best, because of these tips and tricks. Use the whole box of cereal. Most recipes call for 9 cups of cereal, leaving 2 cups left in the box. What the heck are you supposed to do with 2 cups of chex?! Use the whole bag of chocolate chips. More is more in this recipe. Just throw the whole bag in. Use more powdered sugar than you think necessary. Chunks are the best part. Just trust me on this one. How to store puppy chow Puppy chow can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to a week. It does not need to be refrigerated, but some people prefer it chilled. Puppy chow recipe substitutions If you can, I highly recommend making the recipe as is. It truly is the perfect combination of crunchy, sweet, chocolate-y, peanut buttery goodness. Do I have to use semi-sweet chocolate? You can use dark chocolate or even milk chocolate, but semi-sweet is really gives you that perfect sweet, but not too sweet balance. Processed peanut butter — think Jiff or Skippy — works best, but sunflower seed butter should work as well. Butter is essential, but try using a vegan buttery spread instead. Do I need to use vanilla extract? No, you can omit it, but you will loose some of that cozy depth of flavor. I grew up calling it puppy chow but plenty of people call it muddy buddies. It depends on where you live. Other names:. Jump to Video Jump to Recipe This post may contain affiliate links. Please read our disclosure policy. Snack mixes are one of the best party foods. How to Make Puppy Chow You can break the process down into three easy steps. Measure your cereal into a large bowl and set aside. In 1 quart sauce pan, heat semisweet chocolate chips, peanut butter and butter over low heat stirring frequently with a spatula until melted. Remove from heat and stir in a teaspoon vanilla. Pour chocolate mixture over cereal, stirring until evenly coated. Pour into two gallon resealable plastic bags. Add powdered sugar. Seal bag and shake until well coated. Spread over waxed or parchment paper to cool. You want each piece of chex to have an ample amount of chocolaty peanut butter sauce for the sugar to stick to. If you like your mix extra saucy try reducing the Chex amount to only cups. You can also customize it to whatever holiday candy is being sold at the time. This can also be made dairy free by using the right chocolate and a butter substitute like margarine. Sunbutter, soybutter, almond butter, and cashew Butter are great substitutes for peanut butter in this recipe. You can even use Nutella instead for extra chocolatey Puppy Chow. It can stay at room temperature for up to 10 days, or kept in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. However, at my house it never lasts that long! Allow it to thaw before eating. This will allow it to set and dry. When we make something delicious we go big. Nope, we really go for it. Puppy chow is one of those recipes that you can find in a million places, with a million variations, but one thing always annoyed me. You are always left with a weird amount of cereal in the box when you were done. So I wanted to change that for me and for all of you. I wanted to give you a recipe that not only used up the whole box, but that would also be great if you were serving a crowd, sharing at a party, or making gifts for friends, teachers or family. So here we go.Get your big bowl and appetite ready! Sure you can, but do you really want to??? Can this recipe be made nut-free, dairy-free or gluten-free? Feel free to adapt in other ways as you feel necessary: Nut-free: swap the peanut butter for creamy sunbutter and you should be good to go. Dairy-free: you can easily substitute the butter for a dairy free plant based butter. Gluten-free: this one is super easy, just make sure you are using a gluten free version of the cereal. There are a few and any of them will work How do you make big batch puppy chow? The hardest part of making this big batch of deliciousness is finding large enough zip top bags to shake the whole thing up. I find using two and a half gallon size bags works well. Simply mix the cereal into the melty mixture with a big spoon until all the cereal is well covered. I like to put the powdered sugar into the bag before dumping the chocolaty cereal in, just cuts down on the mess hahaha , and I find that it is easier to cover the cereal more evenly. Then, spread out on a wax paper or parchment lined baking tray or two or four depending on how big they are until everything is set. If your house is warm, you may want to put in the fridge for a bit. Tips and Tricks: This recipe is great for a party. Save a few dollars since you are going to coat it in all the delicious things anyway! Looking for other easy kid friendly recipes? Check these out!

Shop All Cat Food Large and giant breed dogs — Great Danes, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers and the like — have different nutritional needs than smaller breeds. All puppies are born with their bones still developing, but large breed puppies are more susceptible to developmental bone and joint disease during their rapid growth phase to 1 year of age. In fact, large breeds reach 50 percent of their body weight at around 5 months of age. Smaller breeds reach 50 percent of their body weight at around 4 months of age. The growth rates of all puppies are dependent on the food that they eat. Puppies should be fed to grow at an average, rather than a maximum, growth rate. Compared to smaller-sized puppies, large breed puppies need restricted levels of fat and calcium to moderate their rate of growth. Controlling the fat level and total calories in the food for these puppies may help reduce the risk of developmental bone and joint problems. Calcium: Excessive calcium intake increases the likelihood of skeletal problems. It is also recommended that calcium supplements not be fed with any commercial pet food for growth. These nutrients help maintain healthy joints and cartilage because large breed dogs are more likely to put stress on their joints due to their size. Mastiffs, Labs ,and all the other large and giant breeds that we love can benefit from precisely balanced nutrition to live their lives to the fullest. UKC Classification: Herding Dog To prevent over-guarding and aggressive behavior, German shepherd dogs should have socialization and obedience training at a young age. German shepherd dogs reach a maximum of about 25 inches in height, and they weigh up to about 95 pounds 41 kilograms. He is a well-proportioned dog. The head is broad and tapers handsomely to a sharp muzzle. The ears are rather large and stand erect. The back is level and muscular, and the tail is bushy and curves downward. The coat is thick and rough and may be black, tan, black and tan or gray. The coat should be harsh and of medium length; however, long-coated individuals occur often. The breed lives about years. Personality: German shepherd dogs get along well with children and other pets if raised with them, but in keeping with their guarding instincts, they tend to be leery of strangers. The breed is considered to be smart and easy to train. Some poorly bred German shepherd dogs can be high-strung and nervous. Coupled with poor socialization and inadequate training, over guarding and aggressive behavior are risks. Living With: Because German shepherd dogs are large and powerful and have strong guarding instincts, great care should be taken to purchase German shepherds from reputable breeders. Poorly bred dogs are more likely to be nervous. To prevent over guarding and aggressive behavior, German shepherd dogs should be carefully socialized from a young age and be obedience trained. They should be with the family and continually exposed under supervision to people and other pets around the neighborhood; they should not be confined to a kennel or backyard either alone or with other dogs. German shepherd dogs are active and like to have something to do. They need ample exercise daily; otherwise, they can get into mischief or become high-strung. The dog sheds heavily about twice yearly, and the rest of the time sheds a lesser amount continually. To control shedding and keep the coat nice, brush at least a few times a week. History: German shepherd dogs are, as their name implies, a breed that originated in Germany. They were developed beginning in the late s by crossing various herding breeds. The breed was subjected to stringent selection and it progressed quickly. In the United Kingdom, the dogs are known as Alsatians because fanciers of the breed there wanted to protect the dog from anti-German sentiments after World War I. German shepherd dogs were introduced in the United States by soldiers returning home from World War I. The breed caught the public eye because of movie stars Strongheart and later, Rin Tin Tin. The first guide dogs were German shepherd dogs. Today, they are one of the most popular dogs in America. The German shepherd dog is a herding breed known for its courage, loyalty and guarding instincts. On average, a German Shepherd dog lives about 12 years. In order to extend their lifespan as long as possible, you need to pick the best dog food for German Shepherds that will cater to this canine's individual needs, ensure preventative health care plan is in place, and have a general plan for their physical and mental stimulation. There are a lot of best German Shepherd dog food reviews online, but the problem with some of those is that they do not address the specific requirements of this breed, which is mostly due to their resting metabolism and activity level as working dogs. As with any breed, you'll have to update your German Shepherd's diet depending on his age, activity level and health condition. German Shepherd puppies require much different nutrients than senior dogs, and GSDs that are working dogs need to eat more calories per day with a specific protein to fat to carbohydrate ratio with added vitamins and minerals. The best thing that you can do for your GSD is to work with your veterinarian or a canine nutritionist, which will help you find not only the best German Shepherd dog food, but a brand of pet food that's perfect specifically for your individual dog. This is an ongoing process. Your pet's diet will likely change numerous times over the course of his life. While food is one of the keys to a healthy GSD, play time and exercise are especially important for this dog breed. Dog owners looking to adopt a GSD should know is that a German Shepherd is a very high energy animal that requires daily exercise; it's non-negotiable if you want to have a healthy dog. The GSD will keep you on your toes, ready for anything. And you better be game! With this out of the way, let's talk about how to feed a German Shepherd for health, what is the best dog food for a German Shepherd dog, and what are their nutritional needs. Remember that no article on the internet, including this one, can replace a consultation with a vet. German Shepherd dogs tend to require more calories than the average large-breed dog. This is attributed to their high energy level which we've discussed above. However, it is possible for some German Shepherds to be lazy and prone to obesity. This is especially true if the dog is older or has an underlying health condition that causes excess weight gain. It is important to not overfeed GSDs and feed the best dog food diet for German Shepherds that is appropriate for their life stage and health condition. Below, I will take a look at the three life stages and two common health conditions of German Shepherds and the type of dog food they will require at that point. These are my most recommended brands, but we'll also take a look at the best German Shepherd dog food reviews from pet owners to see what they have to say after switching to a new diet. German Shepherd Puppies Large-breed German Shepherd puppies are more susceptible to malnutrition and developmental orthopedic disease compared to small-breed pups. Many GSD owners are familiar with diseases that are common to German Shepherds, which can include: hip dysplasia panosteitis hypertrophic osteodystrophy HOD While there is a genetic component to these diseases, there are significant nutritional risk factors that play a part during puppyhood in GSDs. In particular, these risk factors are rapid growth and excess dietary calcium intake. It is important to find the best dog food for German Shepherds that provides just enough of the right balance of nutrients — not too much, and not too little. Because German Shepherd is a large working dog, large-breed specific puppy dog foods are a great safeguard to help prevent these issues in GSDs. Here are my two favorite choices to recommend to owners: 1. GSDs are a more slowly maturing breed, and it is recommended to feed this puppy food until your German Shepherd puppy is 15 months of age. The calorie content and mineral balance in Royal Canine's German Shepherd puppy food are optimal for preventing developmental orthopedic diseases. It's easily one of the favorite of German Shepherd owners and my top recommended best dog food for German Shepherd puppies. Reading the reviews of this dog food, it's clear that a large majority of GSD owners are satisfied with the results from this dog food, but not all. This is why it's important to consult with your vet beforehand. Their large-breed puppy formula has been tweaked over the years, but provides consistent quality nutrition to promote healthy growth in German Shepherds puppies. It's one of my favorite best dog food for German Shepherd puppies because it's fortified with omega-3 fatty acids like DHA and EPA to promote healthy brain, joint and skin development. I've previously talked about Hill's Science as one of my best vet recommended dog food brands in general due to their dedication to precise nutrition and the large variety of formulas they offer to dog owners. Looking at the opinions on this brand, it appears that most dog owners are also very satisfied with this popular dog food brand. Adult German Shepherds If you are looking for the best dog food for an adult German Shepherd dog, or are transitioning from puppy food to adult dog food, I especially recommend consulting with a veterinarian in this case. Then, you can decide which Maintenance adult diet is best. Some possible high-quality dog foods for adult German Shepherds are: 3. It is designed to help maintain lean, strong muscles and healthy bones. Additives and vitamins in this formulation support healthy joints. It promotes nutrient absorption and healthy digestion in large breed adult dogs like GSDs. It's a reasonably priced dog food for German Shepherds, and the nutritional balance is perfect for them. The brand is popular among GSD owners, with a large majority praising the formula. However, as I'm reading more responses , some owners seem to have switched to the below mentioned Royal Canin brand due to changes in the dog's coat. Their different dog food formulas meet the nutritional needs of some of the most popular breeds. This food is specially designed for GSDs over 15 months of age, and it's one of the best dog foods for German Shepherds. The unique design of the kibble has a harder texture than most similar dog food brands, and the size and shape encourage GSD to chew. This is ideal for the German Shepherd because they have a long snout, strong teeth and extremely powerful jaws. This food is also formulated to support proper digestion and maintain the health of the skin, coat, bones and joints. As a GSD ages, their nutritional requirements change as well. Joints start to ache and mental function can start to decline. Active ingredients in my top best dog foods for senior German Shepherds should help your dog go strong for as long as possible. However, additional supplementation such as fish oil for dogs may be a good idea as well. They aren't the cheapest best dog food for German Shepherds, but this manufacturer has a great track record for quality products and high quality control standards. Lamb is the first ingredient in this formula, as the protein amino acids helps to maintain strong muscles and bones in seniors. This dog food brand also contains glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate for healthy joints, and a high level of antioxidants, which can help support proper cell function in aging dogs. However, be mindful that while glucosamine and chondroitin are helpful for senior dogs' joints, the amount added in any dog food is very small, which probably doesn't have a big impact; additional dog joint supplementation may be good. That said, the reviews of this dog food brand have been glowing so far. Royal Canin German Shepherd Breed Health Nutrition Adult This adult formula for health nutrition is not the same as the one I've mentioned above from Royal Canine, but it's one of the best dog foods for German Shepherd that's aged between 15 months of age to years of age. Royal Canin provides the right balance of nutrients to optimize a lean body condition over a lifetime. Once again, the unique design of the kibble has a harder texture than most other similar dog food brands, therefore, its shape and size encourages chewing in German Shepherds. Similar to the above mentioned Royal Canin formula, this dog food is also formulated to support proper digestion and maintain the health of the skin, coat, bones and joints. Underweight German Shepherds Some German shepherd dogs tend to be on the thinner side and may have digestive issues from time to time. This unique formulation is easy to digest and contains helpful ingredients like omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA and Vitamin E as well as other antioxidants to promote a healthy gut and healthy skin. Chicken, apples, carrots and cranberries make this diet tasty for most dogs — tempting even for the pickiest of eaters. This diet does not contain any artificial colors, preservatives or flavoring, obviously, and the reviews of this popular dog food brand are largely positive , particularly when it comes to German Shepherds that are picky eaters and thus, underweight. German Shepherds with Sensitive Stomachs The German Shepherd dog, like many pure-bred dogs, can be predisposed to certain diseases. Some of these diseases may require a special diet for the GSD. Specifically, if you have concerns about his digestive health, work closely with your veterinarian to make sure your dog gets what he needs and hopefully, a proper diagnosis. Notable diseases that are prevalent in this breed and which may affect the type of best dog food for German Shepherds you choose include: inflammatory bowel disease IBD exocrine pancreatic insufficiency EPI antibiotic-responsive diarrhea ARD formerly known as small intestinal bacterial overgrowth SIBO These diseases tend to cause GSDs to lose weight or not be able to gain weight effectively. There's also an article listing 15 best sensitive stomach dog foods , and a lot of these can be applicable for GSDs with a stomach upset or diseases. Bring those names up with your vet. Photos by Phyllis Ensley photography September is a favorite time of year for Golden Retriever fanciers, because it is once again time for our national. Ten years ago, this club hosted what is considered one of the greatest Golden nationals of all time — and probably of any breed — on the shores of Lake Erie. That national was judged by the three iconic women Michele Billings, Anne Clark and Jane Forsyth, which resulted in some amazing moments not soon forgotten. With some very big shoes to fill, and without looking backward, this hardworking, creative Golden Retriever club once again hit it out of the park and hosted an amazing event. Some of the friendliest fairgrounds people I have ever experienced. The entry this year was truly significant, with regular conformation, sweepstakes, and obedience, rally and agility entries. When you add all hunt tests, held at another location, the numbers get staggering. To quote the judge of females this year, Mr. The main criteria for the CVGRC judge committee were vast Sporting dog experience, a proven appreciation for the breed, and a reputation for being kind and friendly with exhibitors such a refreshing point. Interestingly, after 82 years this is the last regional club picking its own judges for a national, as that function has been taken over by the parent club. Only time will tell how that will work out; so far, the jury is still out. Karen Mammano and Mr. David Harper. The number of top-rated Goldens and champions handled by these two is uncountable. So, the table was set for yet another amazing Cuyahoga Golden National and — ta-da — another happened. Best of Breed. Tuesday started bright and early with Karen Mammano judging a large entry of in a very efficient and thorough matter. After a few hours of judging, she ended up with a group of very similar class-winning bitches to pick from. A little later, David Harper started 85 males. David was faced with the same problem as Karen, as the quality of the male puppies was as high as has been seen in years. In the end, sweeps finals were judged by Mr. Best Veteran was judged by Mrs. Over the next two days, both dogs and bitches were judged simultaneously. James Brown the country gentleman is there a nicer judge? Wow, did he do a consistent job. His Winners class looked pretty much as if they could have been bred by the same breeder. Brown worked his Winners class again and again before making what seem a tough but quality decision. Beth Johnson more on her later. When I asked Mr. In the other ring, working very hard but truly entertaining the exhibitors and audience, was Mr. Sam Houston McDonald. Never have I seen a judge make exhibitors feel so at ease and enjoy their experience: Thank you, Sam … Nationals are so stressful. If you want a challenge judging, try bitches at a Golden national — it is not for someone weak in the knees. One after another after another, beautiful bitches oozing type entered the ring. In my 47 years of Goldens, they were as good a group as any, and many in there will become well-known names. Then the unenviable job of picking a winner out of a group of cookie-cutter type. How did he do that? Higgans and her handler Ryan Tepara. Ryan has become a very talented Golden handler, and she looked so together for her young age, not easy with a Golden. It was electric to watch the competition between these two; you could point at either and not be wrong. Later, in a large group of 18 Brood Bitches, Mr. What an amazing accomplishment. On Thursday evening, one of the main events of a Golden national, the Top Twenty, was held. This year the three judges were breeder Mrs. Donna Edwards, breeder-judge Mrs. Donna Ernst and all-breed judge Mr. Jamie Hubbard. Beth Johnson. What do you do when there are Best of Breed Goldens to judge? You do it over two days. The 76 bitches were judged Friday afternoon, and dogs and non-regulars on Saturday. This phenomenal task was placed in the ageless and very capable hands of Mr. Carl Liepmann. Liepmann acquired his first Golden in , and has stayed active in breeding and purchasing Goldens ever since. I had the honor of finishing a Golden for Carl a long time ago and learned then that all of his Goldens needed to do equally as well in the field as the show ring, as he hunted with all of them. This year the lone bagpiper played the entire time while each Golden ran around the ring as the specials were checked in one by one. Best of Opposite Sex. Now it was time for Mr. Liepmann to get started with his 76 bitches. As is usual for him, he wasted no time getting them sorted into groups of 20 and usually reducing those to 10 to then come back for another cut. Each Golden was thoroughly examined, each one given equal opportunity to shine. Eventually choosing around 35 to join the males the following day, Mr. Even with the larger numbers, the quality was so deep that it was not easy to reduce some groups to 10 as that process continued, but eventually the final male group of around 30 emerged to compete against the females and non-regulars. Liepmann was a master of his ring, moving the dogs around to all areas of the large ring to allow the entire audience to get close looks at the final groups. After much consideration the final cut was reached, and now came the unenviable task of picking the winners. You could tell the struggle was real as each dog remaining was deserving of winning the National on his or her merits. What a group of Golden Retrievers. Well, the time came, and Mr. Liepmann picked his winners. Riese was brought out of retirement at 10 years old to show in the regular breed class, was in spectacular condition and never quit. He owned the ring like the older master he is. Well deserved. Best of Opposite: Ch. Select Bitch: Ch. At the Golden national, when you start with champions, being one of the 20 Awards of Merit is a very high honor. There are too many to list, but results are available on the Baray website www. Best Veteran. In closing, kudos must be given to this incredible Golden club on yet another amazing event. I know I missed a lot, and I apologize. Be proud of what you accomplished at this amazing national. You will not find a better breeder! Thanks Julie! She really cares about her dogs. My dog is very healthy and has a wonderful temperament. People always tell me how lucky I am to have such a great dog. How many years in dogs? How many years as a breeder? Marissa Hendrix: Our home is in Dardanelle, Arkansas. We are so grateful to the amazing breeders who have shared their great pedigrees and knowledge with us. We really love our professional handlers and trainers who believe in our dogs. What is my kennel name? How many dogs do I currently keep? Marissa Hendrix: My kennel name is Arkgold. We have 11 adult dogs, which keeps us plenty busy along with our eight-year-old daughter. We have Conformation lines and Field lines as well as offshore pedigrees that we are working with towards our goals. Marissa Hendrix — Arkgold Golden Retrievers Which show dogs from the past have been my noteworthy winners? Her wins were big ones too! Eevee is owned by Maegan and Bryceson Nunley who also have great teamwork in Obedience. Which have been my most influential sires and dams? Chuckles was handled by professional Carrie Owens who has helped to teach, inspire, and guide me in the sport. She is currently ranked No. We are excited for her youngsters in Hunt Tests and Derby work. Dash has also produced a number of working Service Dogs and Therapy Dogs. Can I talk a bit about my facilities? Where are my puppies whelped? How are they raised? We moved during COVID to a home with 20 acres, and the first thing we started to do was fence it all in and build a technical pond for our dogs. We also have a pool for them. My entire day, I am here with my dogs in an amazing space made just for them. Our puppies are whelped in our home. I sleep beside the whelping box for weeks as they grow. Every week they reach different milestones in their development and we do different things like early neurological stimulation. They have activity gyms that clang as we feed them and we play storm sounds for them, for example, to desensitize them to new things. We have a great space for them to go explore outside as well. Once they are old enough, they are microchipped and evaluated on their structure and movement in addition to doing a Volhard temperament test on them. Performance Puppies? Field Puppies? Marissa Hendrix: For Show Puppies, we analyze their movement and structure as they change and mature. Then we watch them gait… again and again… until decisions are made. Selecting Performance Puppies is more about drive, intelligence, and biddability. I think, with all puppies, we watch them grow, then guess, then second guess, and then obsess to a point of finally making a decision. Do I compete in Companion Events? Performance Events? Several puppies that we have bred compete in Performance Sports like Obedience , Rally , and Agility. Are Field Trials or parent club Hunt Tests important to me? Marissa Hendrix: Golden Retrievers have a history and purpose founded on being a hunting dog. Preserving these characteristics and having events to be able to test and challenge these talents in our Golden Retrievers is paramount. Marissa Hendrix: Golden Retrievers are to be shown in hard, working condition. Our breed should have the fitness to be worked a day in the field. You should be able to feel good muscle tone as you are going over the dog. Our dogs enjoy running, retrieving, and swimming for conditioning. Are there any health-related concerns in my breed? Marissa Hendrix: What is great about purebred dogs is that the parent clubs work very hard to set guidelines as to what we need to test for to make each generation the healthiest possible. These generations of health screenings allow predictability in pedigrees and guide the future of health in our dogs. Being a retriever, many studies through the Golden Retriever Foundation , the Morris Animal Foundation , and projects like Shine On Study are paving the way for the future of cancer detection, prevention, and treatment for our breed. These research efforts will be able to not only benefit our Golden Retrievers and their health, but also reveal important connections to carcinogens to help humans too. Do I think my breed is supported by a sufficient number of preservation breeders? However, this is a very popular dog breed, so preservation breeders are in the minority. Therefore, the more outreach we can do to educate and inspire others to learn about the Breed Standard and try Field Events with their dogs, the better. Is my breed well suited to be a family dog? Who are the best candidates to own my breed? Marissa Hendrix: One of the staples of our breed is what great companions they make because of their gentle nature and sweet character. Owners with an active lifestyle , wanting a great house companion of a larger size, make good general fits for the breed. Anyone considering a breed for the first time should go somewhere to interact with the breed to gauge if it is a fit for you. What is the biggest misconception about my breed? Marissa Hendrix: The biggest public misconception in general right now is that breeding ANY other breed to a Poodle other than a Poodle is an okay idea. If I could share a comment or two with judges of my breed, what would I like to say to them? Marissa Hendrix: Make sure to select for temperament as well when evaluating the whole dog. The best judges will always be those who are welcoming to newcomers, patient with young puppies, and supportive of Juniors. Do I have any words of wisdom to pass along to newer breeders? Take time to sit ringside with your mentors and watch the judging at shows to learn. Train with and throw birds for experienced handlers in the field, and also, plop your chair in the gallery at field events—and watch. As a breeder, you will be making a difference through your puppies in the lives of their families. It is your responsibility to be there for the lifetime of your puppies as support, as well as working to make sure your lines are the best possible. Breeding dogs is incredibly hard and having a supportive circle of people you trust to cry on when things are difficult will help you to survive it. Are you looking for a Golden Retriever puppy? The best way to ensure a long and happy relationship with a purebred dog is to purchase one from a responsible breeder. Not sure where to begin finding a breeder? best teething toys for golden retriever puppies - And to do that, we have to start with the blue French Bulldog. The blue Frenchie is a unique color variation of the French Bulldog breed, which is caused by a recessive gene known as the dilution gene. If you really want to know how pure your Frenchie is, i. That spot would probably go to either the lilac Frenchie or the isabella Frenchie , both of which are extremely hard to find, and also extremely expensive. And that is pretty similar in the canine world, as well. With that in mind, we can say that blue and tan French Bulldogs have all the same personality traits and quirks that we usually associate with the French Bulldog breed. They are very low-energy and low-maintenance dogs who thrive on social interaction and the exchange of affection. They love to cuddle, play around, and generally spend time with their owners. They are great with both adults and kids, which makes them perfect family pets. In addition, due to their small size, they are comfortable in small apartments and in big houses alike. Blue And Tan French Bulldog Grooming Needs Photo from: rockysssmodernlife Another thing that is a big positive of the blue and tan French Bulldogs is their relatively low grooming needs, at least when it comes to their coats. However, other grooming aspects can be a bit more demanding, especially when it comes to their skin and face. You need to pay special attention to their skin and make sure that their folds are clean and not irritated. Blue and tan Frenchies are particularly prone to various skin conditions, and you need to be on high alert a lot of the time. Additionally, due to their brachycephalic head shape, they are more prone to dental problems, so you will need to make sure that the hygiene of their teeth and mouth is on point. Blue and tan French Bulldogs are a beautiful dog breed, they really are, but they come with a set of question marks over their health. All French Bulldogs and a lot of similarly built breeds can struggle with respiratory issues because of their brachycephalic head shape. That significantly impacts their ability to be active, as long and intensive walks can be hurtful for them. Dermatitis and skin allergies are just a couple of examples. More specifically, when talking strictly about blue and tan French Bulldogs, they can frequently struggle with color dilution alopecia. These are some of the things I was referring to when asking if blue and tan French Bulldogs are worth the hype. At the start of this article, I mentioned that Frenchies are often considered a status symbol, and that is something that is reflected in their price. The veterinary expenses can pile up pretty quickly! As a general rule of thumb, I can say that the rarer a color is, the more expensive it will be. There is another case that I simply have to mention. Black and tan Frenchies need special treatment, and that will require a lot of effort, time, and money from your side. We have a litter due second week of April that will likely have blues! Levi is blue and momma is fawn but carries blue and chocolate. See Blue Puppies! For those of you Frenchie lovers who are interested in the genetics behind the blue color, here it is. This of you who are just here for the cute Frenchie pics, scroll down. The blue gene is actually a gene that dilutes the color of genes on the K and A-locus. The K locus determines if there is bridling or not. The A locus determines if the Frenchie is solid black, tri-color, fawn, or sable. If the puppy is solid black determined by A-locus and inherits two copies of the dilute gene of the D-locus, the black coloring is diluted to the blue color. French Bulldog Blue Male: Adam If the frenchie is fawn determined by A-locus and inherits two dilute genes on the D-Locus then, he will be blue fawn which is more of a champagne color. If they inherit one or two copies of the brindle gene they will express brindling in their coat making the beautiful blue brindle French Bulldog. They can express a light amount of brindle like or be like Remy here who is a reverse brindle and expresses lots of brindling in his coat. Piebald is a recessive gene. This means in order to be pied they have to carry two copies of the gene on the S-locus. This creates beautiful patterns of splashes of color varying from large quantities of patches or maybe just a tiny dot on their tail or elsewhere. Those who only have a tiny dot appear to be white and are considered to be extreme pieball. Romeo is a blue brindle pieball. Yes, I let him right in to warm his ears by the fireplace. In order for this color to be expressed. We are looking at the K-locus, A-locus, and the D-locus. K will determine if there is brindling expressed in the tan points or not. Just one copy of the brindle gene will allow for brindling to occur. But remember to be blue they must also inherit two copies of the dilute gene one D-locus. Clair is our female Blue and Tan Frenchie with tan points. Our French Bulldogs have had no health problems. I get questions about blue alopecia; we do not have that issue with our dogs or the puppies we have produced. We feed high-quality dog food to curb any skin or digestive problems. Yes, Frenchies can have gas and throw up; feeding high-quality food will get you close to eliminating these problems. We work on producing puppies with a little bit of a nose to help with breathing problems. On a cool morning, our girls will walk a mile or more with no issues. Never walk your French Bulldog in the heat, no matter the size of the nose. We do not produce extreme Frenchies with a flat nose and face or minis. Why are French Bulldogs so expensive? French Bulldogs require artificial insemination and c-sections to reproduce. They also have very slim hips, which makes it difficult for them to reproduce naturally. Breeding French Bulldogs is also a full-time job; they require constant attention and care. Are French Bulldogs good companions? French Bulldogs have the sweetest, funniest, and most unique personalities. Our Frenchies keep us entertained all the time. They are the biggest clowns! Frenchies will be as lazy or as active as you want them to be. But as with all dogs, they do need some activity. A short walk, playing ball, or just some mental activity helps keep your Frenchie fit inside and out! Deposits are not refundable if purchase is not completed due to no fault of Wild Blue French Bulldogs. We will meet in a public area. Outside the local area must be agreed upon prior.
