In between each finger, you will notice excess skin that connects your fingers together. Although this excess skin exists, it can hardly be classified as being webbed. The German Shepherd paws are the same way. Even though German Shepherd breed standards do not include webbed feet in the description, it is possible for German Shepherds to have webbed feet. Irresponsible breeding or certain health conditions can cause German Shepherds and other non-webbed breeds to have webbed feet. The stagnated hair in the catagen phase may appear to be changing to a lighter shade. On the contrary, when the new fur grows, its coat color may appear brighter and more intensely colored. Labrador Color Changes Due to Health Issues Illness, injury, and surgery can disrupt the production and distribution of melanin in dogs. When your Lab has an injury or a surgical operation, the fur on the scar area is lost. During healing, a surge in melanin production occurs to facilitate hair growth, causing hyperpigmentation. The new hair has the characteristics of freshly grown puppy fur and portrays a darker shade. However, this surge in melanin production only affects the injury or surgery area. They include: Cancer. Hormonal health issues such as hypothyroidism. Liver and kidney disease. Autoimmune skin diseases like vitiligo and Uveodermatological Syndrome. Vitiligo is a rare autoimmune skin disease that destroys skin melanocytes the cells that produce melanin , leading to depigmentation in the affected areas. However, the disease is not painful, and your dog can lead a normal life. While Labradors are not among dog breeds predisposed to vitiligo, they can get the disease just like all other dog breeds. Uveodermatologic Syndrome is an autoimmune disease that destroys melanocytes in high-pigment cells such as the skin and eyes. The white patches, similar to those of vitiligo, are most common on the face, eyelids, nose, and lips, as well as the footpads, scrotum, anus, and vulva. Although Uveodermatological Syndrome is rare and not fully defined medically, most experts believe it is a canine version of Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Syndrome in humans. Original Labrador Retriever Color Black is the original, archetypal Labrador color, and genetically the most dominant. Chocolate and yellow puppies were frequently euthanized at birth. To understand that we have to look at the genetic difference between black and chocolate Labs. Labrador Retriever Color Genetics Both types get their color from a pigment called eumelanin. Labs with lots of eumelanin pigment in their coat are black. If they have a little less, they appear brown instead. We use letters to tell each place apart — a bit like giving each locus its own zip code! The B locus is home to a pair of genes called B genes. There are two types of B gene your Lab can get in their pair: One we call big B — it contains an instruction to make lots of eumelanin, and causes a black Labrador coat. And one we call little b — it contains an instruction for less eumelanin, and causes a brown or chocolate coat. Big B is a dominant gene, and little b is a recessive gene. Dominant genes to switch off, or override, recessive genes. So dog with BB genes will be black, because he has two genes for a black coat. And a Bb dog will be black too, because the dominant B genethe recessive b gene. Only a dog with a matching pair of bb genes will express the instruction for less eumelanin in their coat, and be brown. Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog with two copies of the b gene will actually look brown. But the dominance of the black color enabled our chocolate friends to remain hidden and rare with the breed, for many decades. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. In fact, it would take two black Labs both carrying the little b gene to produce chocolate puppies. Like this: Statistically, one quarter of their litter would be chocolate colored. And of course, some Labradors are neither black nor brown. The genetic information that creates a yellow coat comes from another pair of genes altogether. These genes are located at the E locus. And — you guessed it — we call them E genes. Just like B genes there are two versions of the E gene, big E and little e. Big E is the dominant gene. It does not interfere with the B genes. Little e is the recessive gene. It has the potential to mask the B genes that would otherwise give us black or brown coats. And the result is a yellow dog. How Yellow Overrides Black and Chocolate Only the little e gene can mask the instructions for black or chocolate fur. There are three possible combinations of E gene that a dog can inherit. It could have two dominant genes EE two masking genes ee or one of each Ee. Only the middle of these three dogs will be yellow. Nine Different Possible Labrador Genotypes! Every Labrador has a combination of B and E genes — called their genotype. There are nine different possible genotypes. Here they are in full: Can you see why each combination of genes turns out the way it does? Because as you can see, the second dog down the list may look black but he could throw brown puppies, and the fourth dog down the list may look black, but he could throw yellow puppies. The fifth dog down the list is also black but he could throw yellow and brown puppies. Puppy colors are easier to predict when both parents owe their appearance to the recessive genes b or e. Mating Two Yellow Labradors Two yellow Labradors mated together will never throw brown or black puppies. All their offspring will be yellow. This is because yellow dogs do not possess the big E gene which is needed to switch off the masking effect. Mating Two Chocolate Labradors Two brown Labs mated together will never throw black puppies because brown dogs do not have the big B gene. But two chocolate Labs can produce yellow puppies, if each of the parents carries the little e gene — like this: In the mixed litter, statistically one of half of the puppies will be chocolate and one half yellow. Depending on their genotype, two black Labradors can indeed have yellow or chocolate puppies. Remember from our grid above that there are four different possible genotypes for a black Labrador. The genotype refers to the genetic code that the dog carries. And the four different possible black genotypes down the side to represent the father. Inside the grid are the puppies that could be born from each combination. If and only if, both parents carry a little e gene, then some of the puppies may be yellow. Remember that your puppy needs two little e genes one from each parent in order to be yellow. If only one of two black dogs carries the little e gene, all their puppies will be black. Yes it is, check out the bottom right hand square in the diagram above! Notice that it can only happen if both parents dogs have this genotype: EeBb. In other words, they both carry a little e and a little b. This is good example of how complicated, and unexpected, Labrador colors can be. There are six different possibilities for litter color combinations depending on the genotype of the parents. You can even get a litter of all black puppies from a chocolate mother and a yellow father or vice versa! Two black genes BB gives you a black Labrador One of each Bb also give you a black Labrador Two brown genes bb gives you a chocolate Labrador Remember that the black dominant gene always switches of the brown gene, so only the dog at the bottom will actually look brown. Generation after generation of black dogs can continue to have only black puppies if dogs with the Bb gene are only ever mated to dogs with BB genes. On the puppy picture you can see the dark tipped ear and in the adult Bernedoodle picture you can see the tips of the ears are still black. How does the sable Bernedoodle coat change? Sable Bernedoodles are born dark or even looking black. By the time they are a few days old we can tell if they are sable. The first signs of a sable bernedoodle are highlights by the ears, eyes, muzzle, and underneath the tail. When sable bernedoodles are 6 weeks old you can tell what color they will clear out to buy looking at the color under their eyes. Sable Bernedoodles will usually have a lighter brown, cream, or red coloring under and around the eyes. This is the color your sable Bernedoodle will most likely clear out to. Clearing out is different than fading. With fading we do not know what color the puppy will end up being. With clearing out the dog shows what color it will end up being around 6 weeks of age. Because the Bernedoodle has poodle in them they do have a tendency to fade. The fading comes from the poodle parent. Some Bernedoodles start out as black and turn silver. Some Bernedoodles start out looking black and turn cream. Your dogs genetics determine if your puppy will fade. There is not a test available to determine if your dog carries the fading gene. The only way to reduce fading in the Bernedoodle is to know the lineage and chose breeding dogs that have not faded and come from long lines of non-fading poodles. Even with that there is a chance your puppy could change colors with age. The lighter the rust is as a puppy the lighter the rust will be as an adult if your Bernedoodle has the fading gene. It has been interesting to watch the past eight years how the tricolor Bernedoodle color changes. One thing I am finding is that hair type can have an affect on whether or not they fade at an early age. Bernedoodles with a straighter coat seem to hold their color better than Bernedoodles with a curly coat regardless if the poodle parent carries the fading gene. Tricolor Bernedodoles with a poodle parent that faded to silver where their rust used to be seem to start fading as young as 10 weeks. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a phantom poodle parent seem to start fading a bit later around months. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a sable poodle parent seem to start fading around months. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a poodle parent that has not faded seem to hold their color. Because all of our puppies from our poodle parents that do not seem to carry the fading gene are under 2 years old we do not know what age they will start fading or if they will hold their color until they turn grey from old age. Do Bernedoodles Fade? The merle Bernedoodle coat is a newer coat color. Our Merle Bernedoodles are to young to know how their color will be as adults. So far what we are seeing is that the merle coat is actually turning a darker shade of grey. You can see with age his rust lightened up to a tan color and his coat came in wavy. Despite the fact that they go through a number of stages of growth and development, we tend to consider dogs either puppies or adults. So what are the stages of puppy growth and development? Depending on what methodology you want to follow, there are anywhere from 5 to 7 stages of puppyhood that start at birth and end when your dog reaches adulthood. This is called the imprinting, or critical learning period. For puppies, the imprinting period is during the first 16 weeks of life. Puppies learn more during this time than they can learn in a life time. In fact, such vast change in development happens with each day that passes, the Imprinting Period is further sub-divided into multiple distinct puppy-stages. Learning is already rapidly occurring, making it important that human caretakers provide puppies with specific neurological stimulation, a complex environment, and careful, yet thorough, socialization for proper development and adjustment to living in human society. During this time, there are also very critical lessons that the puppies must learn from their dog moms and siblings. Therefore, puppies should not be removed from their original homes before 7 weeks of age. As soon as your puppy comes home, time is of the essence for you to provide a huge heaping of high quality socialization and schooling. This is the key to creating a socially self-confident, well-behaved puppy that is strongly bonded to you. Fear-Impact Period: During the 2nd Socialization Period, when your puppy is around weeks of age, it is important to be aware of what is known as a Fear-Impact Period. So, protect your puppy from these long-term effects by avoiding bad experiences. That is good parenting! This will typically occur between months of age, but sometimes lasts longer. This is similar to the First Fear-Impact Period. If it does not occur at this time, it will occur later during the Adolescent Period. This is usually a difficult time for many puppy parents, but can be a mess for those with puppies that missed early establishment of boundaries, socialization and training. Introducing Your Current Dog to a New Bernedoodle If you already have a dog or dogs and are introducing a new Bernedoodle puppy or adult, you should do so slowly and carefully. Even if your dog loves other dogs, remember that it can be quite a different thing to have another dog come live in their home. For this reason, it is a good idea to have the initial meeting in a neutral location such as a park that your dog has never been to. Ideally, you will have a friend or family member that can help you. Each of you will take one of the dogs and go to the meeting spot alone. Try to bring the dogs together to greet each other. Do your best to keep the leash slack so that the dog does not feel it is being held back. At this point, there are many ways either dog might act. They might be excited to meet each other, which they will show by circling and sniffing. They might urinate near one another, circle each other, or even ignore the other. Let them do what they would like with as little interaction from you as possible. Keep the interaction brief. If at any point the dogs try to fight or otherwise become aggressive with each other, do not pull on their leashes. Instead, wave a treat above the nose of each to get them to separate. Let them calm down. Keep them near each other but not close enough to get at the other. Provide them with calm pets, lots of treats, and other comforting things. If all goes well, try heading out on a short walk together. If all the dogs still seem to like each other — or they seem indifferent — then you can take them home and see how they do. Keep them on leash initially so that you can quickly jump in if things get out of hand. Otherwise, allow them to explore together and get to know each other. Introducing Your Cat to Your New Bernedoodle If you are a cat household bringing in a Bernedoodle, you will have a few options depending on how dog-savvy your cat is and how cat-savvy your dog is. If neither animal is used to having the other around, you will want to start very slowly. When we brought our puppy home, we had two cats who had never met a dog. It took several months to introduce them fully. First, we ensured that the cats had somewhere to go that the puppy could not go. We did this by installing a puppy gate on our stairs that includes a cat door. This allowed our cats to go upstairs where their litter and food is, to get away from the dog. It allowed them to slowly make the trek downstairs to meet the puppy on their terms. I will admit that there was a period of time where my husband and I wondered if our cats would ever be brave enough to come downstairs or if we would have cats upstairs and a dog downstairs for the rest of our lives. Luckily, it happened just as we hoped — the cats eventually started coming downstairs, and they now love playing with our Bernedoodle. It just took a lot of time and patience. If you are getting a Bernedoodle that is used to cats, or you have cats that are used to dogs, then you do not have to go this slow. However, it is still wise to give the animals time to get used to each other before formally introducing them. Bring your Bernedoodle home and keep it confined to a room or two for the first day or two. Let your cats smell that the dog is in the house, and the dog smell the cats in the house. This gives both of them a chance to adjust to the other. Then try bringing the pup out on a leash. Allow the animals to approach each other. If they do so peacefully, you can drop the leash — but keep it on the dog at first so that you can quickly grab it if any of the animals get upset. Once your pets are used to each other, you should not assume that they will never have a kerfuffle. Just as human siblings will fight from time to time, your animals might too. The First Few Weeks of Being a Multi-Pet Household Whether you have introduced your Bernedoodle to another dog, another cat, or any other pet, the first few weeks are critical in the long-term success of a blended household. Walk them or play with them at the same time. In short, try to keep their life as similar to before as possible. Do not leave two dogs alone together until you are confident that they are entirely used to each other. Continue to give them lots of treats, praise, and attention when they communicate properly. If you notice dogs fighting over toys, growing, snapping, showing their teeth, or long stares, then it is time to separate the dog from the rest of the family until it can settle down. As time goes on, the pets should get used to being together and, hopefully, start to become the best of friends. Suppose this does not occur, and your current dog is aggressive toward your new Bernedoodle even after taking care with a slow introduction. Playdates Are the Best Way to Start Socializing with Other Dogs If you do not have another dog in the home and want to introduce your Bernedoodle to other dogs, it is wise to start with one-on-one playdates. If you have a friend or family member with a dog that loves other dogs, ask them to get together. Start at a neutral place, like a park. Keep both dogs on their leashes and allow them to sniff each other and greet each other. Unless they show signs of aggression, you should follow their lead and allow them to get to know each other however they feel comfortable. Once they seem to be comfortable with each other or indifferent to one another , take off for a short walk. The first time you introduce your Bernedoodle to another dog will likely be the most nerve-wracking because you will not know what to expect. Once you know that your dog likes other dogs, you can more quickly and easily introduce them to other dog-savvy dogs. Taking Your Bernedoodle to the Dog Park for the First Time The most important thing to know about taking your puppy or dog to the dog park for the first time is that it should not be the first time your pooch interacts with other dogs. Remember that the dog park is overwhelming to a dog. There are new smells, other dogs, new people, and new rules that your puppy or dog is not aware of. This is why we start by offering advice on socializing with other dogs and then move on to advice about the dog park. If you take your Bernedoodle to the dog park before they are ready, they can quickly become fearful of the park, and that can transfer to all their interactions with other dogs. If you have already introduced your dog to a few other dogs and they have done great, then you are ready to take your Bernedoodle to the dog park. If you have several options, start with a smaller dog park that gives your Bernedoodle a chance to explore but that you can easily keep them in your view. Before you hop in the car, consider this list of items that can make the experience a more positive one: Their leash. Yes, the dog park is leash-less, but you will need to get your dog from your house or vehicle to the park. Then take it with you into the dog park. If something goes wrong, you will want to be able to leash your Bernedoodle quickly. Depending on the particular area in which you leave, you will likely need to keep their city license, rabies tags, and any other required tags. The easiest way to do that is to keep their collar on. Bring poop bags. You will need to clean up after your dog in a dog park just as you would if you were walking your dog through your neighborhood. Bring treats. If you have to call your pooch to you, you want to be able to reward them. This is a good chance for advanced training because you can teach your dog to respond even when distractions abound. We recommend getting a treat pouch so that you will have treats quickly available when necessary. Only bring toys you are prepared to leave behind. If you bring a Frisbee, ball, or another toy for your pup to play with, you should be prepared to lose it. It might simply get lost, another dog might claim it as its own, or you could forget it. You should assume that your dog is going to get muddy and dirty at the park. Bring one or two towels to wipe down your dog, and then bring another one or two to cover your backseat during your drive home. Your Bernedoodle is going to run around, and they are going to get tired. Bring a bottle of water and a small bowl to give your Bernedoodle a quick refresh when they need it. Preparing for Bad Experiences at the Dog Park We have taken our two dogs to the dog park hundreds of times, and very rarely is there any problem at all. That said, they do happen, and it is crucial to be prepared. The goal is to prevent them from taking chase. You can offer treats, call their name, and squeak a toy you brought with you. You do not want to make negative noise — such as yelling at your dog — because this will not encourage them to come back to you. Dog fights. Well-socialized dogs can still get into fights with other dogs. It might be that one tackled the other too hard or that they were both going for the same toy. Whatever the cause, resist the urge to jump in the middle to break them up. Dog fights are dangerous, and you should avoid getting physically involved. Instead, call your dog to you. Even if they do not immediately stop and come to you, they know you are there. Then make a loud noise, such as clapping or whistling, to get the attention of both dogs. Alert others in the hopes that the owner of the other involved dog s can recall their own dog. Ideally, everyone at a dog park would be well-versed in dealing with dogs, but this is not always the case. For example, someone might run up to your dog and roughly pet them. You do not have to aggressively confront the offending person, but you can politely tell them to please approach your dog slowly, to let your dog come to them, or to leave your dog alone.
