We are not your typical breeder. You see, Doodles ARE our passion! Over 10 years ago I was officially diagnosed with asthma. At that same, time we were thinking of getting the kids a puppy so we were all very disappointed when the doctor pointed out that pets are a trigger of Asthma. We had owned a Lab before and were planning on getting another one due to how great they are with kids and families. I was well aware of how much they shed and knew that my asthma ruled this option out for us. A few months afterwards, I was traveling on business in Rhode Island and happened to spot a man walking a gorgeous dog one morning. The dog looked like a teddy bear that you'd want to cuddle up to. I approached the man and asked what breed the dog was…. I spent the next year researching the breed, its origination, temperment, bloodlines, health, etc. I emailed and visited different breeders to find out if this breed was as good as its accolades. With every visit I made, I was even more convinced that this was the dog for our family. As crazy as it sounds, I purchased two in-tact female pups at the same time that I was due with a baby myself. This would be the fifth child in our family and I wanted our kids to have the experience of bringing puppies into the world and caring for them. So here is the part where fate comes into play - even before the mothers were bred, we received interest and took a few reservations. The first of the pups ended up being born on one of our daughters' birthday in January and the second pup was born the same day I gave birth to our fourth daughter. I will tell you that the first couple of months were rough between getting up to let the dogs out and feeding the baby but we did seem to get them on the same schedule at some point. And, our two females could not have had more different of personalities. We really had the best of both worlds in the two dogs. Bagheera was our soft, emotional and cuddly one while Akela was independent and extremely intelligent. We had taken our time with our two new family members to ensure that they were healthy and of the right temperament to be mothers and care for their pups. I have such a love for animals that my husband is scared to death that when the puppies arrive, that I will not be able to part with any of them! We are a small home-based breeder of Puppy Culture raised Australian labradoodles in Southern Colorado. We breed medium and standard-sized Australian labradoodles. We only breed for the enjoyment of the puppies and to further promote labradoodles that are of excellent health, conformation, and temperament. Our Australian labradoodles are bred with responsibility and integrity. Our goal is to place these special dogs into homes where they will be loved and cherished companions. We stand by you, and offer continuous lifetime support. We do this because we love dogs, and the Labradoodle breed. Labradoodles are known for their intelligence, level-headedness, affection, sociability and cheerful disposition. They are loyal, friendly, eager to please, even-tempered, gentle and kind. This combination of traits makes them outstanding service and therapy dogs, as well as terrific family companions. We produce exceptional labradoodles because each litter is carefully planned. We keep two vital factors in mind as we make our selection: temperament and health. Each puppy born in our home is handled daily. Colorado Mountain Labradoodles utilize early neurological stimulation, as well as the puppy culture method which represents a gold standard in puppy rearing and early socialization. We also use both the Empowered Breeder, and Avidog Evaluation Test to evaluate the temperament of each puppy. A lot of doodle breeders are now claiming they raise their puppies using the Puppy Culture. There are lots of reinforcement based breeders out there who are doing a magnificent job but have never seen Puppy Culture, or followed the whole protocol. Make sure the breeder provides videos, and other information on their weekly updates. We follow Puppy Culture thoroughly, and by the time our puppies are 8 weeks old, they have been started on the commands: sit, down, watch me and go to your place. They have been conditioned with the clicker, and are excited to be trained. Our Australian labradoodles are highly intelligent and are simple to train. They quickly learn standard obedience commands, such as sit, down, come and stay. They thrive on being mentally and physically engaged. They love playing and interacting with people and other dogs, especially in games involving chase, fetch or hide-and-seek. Families also find that our labradoodles enjoy participating in competitive canine activities, such as tricks, agility and obedience. As with almost any breed, their socialization and training should start at an early age and continue throughout their life. They share a love of water with their field Labrador and Poodle ancestors and often will enter water without prompting. All of our puppies receive love and care from everyone in the family. By the time they are ready to go home with you, they will be used to children and other dogs, and ready to go home to be a loving member of your family. Our dogs are treated as family, and are included in our daily routines.

These dogs are adaptable and versatile and respond well to positive reinforcement training. They can excel in various activities such as agility, obedience training, and even working roles. The Boxsky's combination of looks, temperament, and versatility make them a highly sought-after breed. A Captivating Blend: The Boxsky's Distinctive Appearance The Boxsky's appearance can vary greatly, showcasing a mix of the parent breeds' best features. In general, Boxskies have a strong, well-built body with a wide chest, muscular limbs, and a lively, expressive face. Their eyes are often enchanting, possibly inheriting the vivid blue of a Husky or the warm brown of a Boxer. Their coats are typically dense and can range from short to medium in length, with a variety of colors such as black, brown, brindle, or even white with unique markings. Grooming needs can also differ depending on the coat, but regular brushing and maintenance are essential. A Boxsky's striking appearance is sure to turn heads and make them a standout in any crowd. No one Boxsky looks the same as the parent breeds are so different from each other. The Growth Journey: Sizing Up a Boxsky Boxskies, being mixed breeds, can exhibit a range of sizes, usually falling into the medium to large category. Males typically stand between 22 and 25 inches tall at the shoulder, while females range from 20 to 23 inches. Weight also varies, with males tipping the scales at 45 to 80 pounds and females weighing between 35 and 65 pounds. The final size of a Boxsky depends on their genetic makeup, which may favor one parent breed over the other. A Boxsky's growth rate can be influenced by factors such as diet, exercise, and overall health. To ensure a well-proportioned, healthy dog, it is essential to provide proper nutrition and regular vet checkups throughout their growth. Expecting the Years: Boxsky Life Expectancy A Boxsky's life expectancy typically ranges from 10 to 14 years, a relatively healthy lifespan for a medium to large-sized dog. However, this breed can be prone to certain health issues inherited from their parent breeds, such as hip dysplasia, heart issues, or eye problems. To ensure your Boxsky's long and happy life, it is crucial to provide a well-balanced diet, regular exercise, and routine vet checkups. Additionally, proper training and socialization are essential for a well-rounded, well-behaved Boxsky. By taking a proactive approach to their health and well-being, you can expect to enjoy many wonderful years with your Boxsky companion. A healthy Boxsky should have at least 60 to 90 minutes of exercise each day, which can include walks, hikes, play sessions, or even dog sports like agility or flyball. Their intelligence and natural athleticism make them excellent candidates for various activities that challenge their minds and bodies. Providing proper exercise is essential to prevent boredom and undesirable behaviors such as digging or excessive barking. Remember to gradually build up their exercise routine, and always consider the weather conditions, as both parent breeds can be sensitive to extreme temperatures. Early socialization and training are essential to help your Boxsky become a well-behaved, well-adjusted companion. These dogs are intelligent and eager to learn, but they can also inherit a stubborn streak from their Husky lineage. Positive reinforcement techniques, such as treats, praise, and clicker training, are the most effective methods to encourage good behavior and obedience. Consistency and patience are crucial, as well as making training sessions engaging and fun to keep their interest. Enrolling in a puppy obedience class can be an excellent way to establish a strong foundation, strengthen the bond between you and your Boxsky, and provide valuable socialization opportunities. Keeping It Neat: Grooming Your Boxsky Grooming requirements for a Boxsky will depend on the inherited coat characteristics from their parent breeds. If your Boxsky has a shorter coat like a Boxer, they may require less frequent grooming, such as brushing once or twice a week. However, if their coat is more like a Husky's, expect to brush them more frequently, even daily during shedding seasons, to keep their coat healthy and reduce loose hair. In general, regular at home grooming helps to distribute natural oils, remove dirt and debris, and minimize shedding. Bathing your Boxsky should be done as needed, typically every few months or when they get dirty. Overbathing can strip their skin and coat of essential oils, causing dryness or irritation. Pay attention to their ears, cleaning them regularly to prevent infection, and trim their nails or use a scratch board every few weeks to maintain proper foot health. Additionally, practice good dental hygiene by brushing their teeth several times a week to prevent dental issues and promote fresh breath. Boxskys can make fantastic family pets for those who can match their energy and enthusiasm. They are known for their affectionate and loyal nature, making them excellent companions for children and adults alike. Their playful demeanor and gentle disposition with family members make them particularly well-suited to households with children, although supervision during playtime is always recommended. Boxskys are also typically friendly towards other pets, especially when socialized early on. Keep in mind, however, that their high energy levels and exercise needs may not be suitable for every family or living situation. An active family with a spacious yard or access to outdoor spaces for exercise will be the best match for a Boxsky. Delving Into the Lineage: The Siberian Husky The Siberian Husky , one of the Boxsky's parent breeds, is a medium-sized working dog breed originally bred by the Chukchi people of Siberia for sled-pulling and companionship. Known for their striking appearance, intelligence, and agility, Siberian Huskies are famous for their endurance and strength. These dogs have a thick, double-layered coat to protect them from harsh weather conditions and distinctive facial markings that often include a mask-like pattern. Siberian Huskies are friendly, outgoing, and energetic dogs that require regular exercise and mental stimulation to stay happy and healthy. They can be independent and sometimes stubborn, making consistent training and early socialization essential. Despite their working origins, Siberian Huskies have found their way into many loving homes as cherished family pets. Exploring the Roots: The Boxer. Shedding, extremely energetic, short attention span and stubborn. Appearance Boxskies are very unique-looking dogs. Some have the longer, thick fur of huskies, while others have short and sleek Boxer coats. Some have triangular ears that stand tall, and others might have a bit of a forward and downward curve to their ears. Color Siberian Huskies, though most famously recognized for their black and white coat and pattern, also come in a wide array of other colors. Some of these colors include gray and white, sable and white, agouti and black, and red and white. They can even be entirely pure white in color. Instead, the breed standard calls for them to be either brindle having varying degrees of defined black stripes on a fawn background or entirely fawn with white or black markings. Although not part of the breed standard, Boxers can also be white or have fawn markings or brindle markings. A Boxsky can have any of these colors and patterns, so it is hard to predict what a litter of pups may look like before they are born! Boxsky pups can inherit the dark brown to almost black colored eyes of their Boxer parent or the various shades of brown or blue, as well as amber eye colors that their Husky parent may have had. This happy Boxer Husky Mix has a beautiful fawn coat color with white markings. However, with training early on, Boxskies can learn how to be well-behaved pups. People love Boxskies for their fun, rambunctious, and loving personalities when they are young. As they grow up, they often settle down and become more content with being calm, though they never truly grow out of their playful nature! Lifespan Siberian Huskies can typically be expected to live anywhere between 12 and 14 years as they are a relatively healthy breed of dog. Boxers have a slightly less life expectancy of between 10 and 12 years. Boxskies can be expected to live to be, on average, anywhere from 10 to 14 years old. Intelligence Boxskies are intelligent dogs. Both parent breeds are known for their intelligence and trainability. However, most would agree that because of their big, silly personalities, you have to be quite patient while training Boxskies since most of them prefer to be goofy and have fun rather than focus on strict training. Siberian Huskies were born to work hard and despite their goofy nature, so were Boxers! This means that they like to keep busy, whether it be through exercise like running and walking or mental stimulation and interactive treat puzzles and training. Both parent breeds are considered to be good with children and good family dogs. As such, the Boxsky is often considered a great family dog. However, their only downfall really is that they might be too energetic and boisterous for young children who might get easily overwhelmed. And, of course, teaching both dogs and children how to interact with each other in a positive way will be important. They may not be the fastest or strongest dog breed in the world, but they definitely have the endurance to play all day! Behavior With proper training, Husky Boxer mixes are generally well-behaved dogs. Visit our Husky Behavior hub to learn more. Boxer Husky Mixes get their sleeping positions from their Husky parent! Their ancestry can be traced back to the dogs raised by the Chukchi people from northern Siberia. The Chukchi people developed this breed of dog that went on to become the modern-day Siberian husky. Siberia can reach frigid temperatures as low as degrees Fahrenheit! These dogs also were essential in helping the Chukchi people transport food, equipment, and other various goods by pulling them on sleds. The modern-day Boxer is traced to Germany in the late s, who are the smaller descendants of the Bullenbeisser dog , a large and powerful dog used to hunt bear, bison, and wild boar. The Boxer was bred to be a more sleek and elegant version of the Bullenbeisser. Boxers have enjoyed having various occupations such as police dogs, watchdogs, and even getting back to the Assyrian roots as war dogs in both world wars. They need lots of physical activity every day, like long walks, runs, or active play sessions. Other options include working on obedience or agility or any other number of dog sports to help keep your Boxsky pup active and thriving. If you find yourself too busy some days to meet those needs, it may be best to send your pup to a doggie daycare, where it can play, roughhouse, and tussle with other dog friends. Grooming for these dogs will mostly consist of brushing. If your Boxsky has more of a husky-like coat, a comb, a slicker brush, and a deshedding brush will be essential. If your Boxsky has the smooth short coat of a boxer, it will need something along the lines of a gentle rubber curry brush to help massage the skin and hair follicles and release those short, loose, shedding hairs. Training Training a Siberian Husky Boxer mix may sometimes test your patience, but with some consistency, Boxskies can become wonderfully well-behaved dogs and good canine citizens. Despite their intelligence, Huskies are known for their stubbornness, and Boxers are known to have a rather short attention span. This can work against you, but in some cases, it may work in your favor! With having a short attention span, your Boxsky may just forget all about feeling like wanting to be stubborn and turn his attention back to training! Focus on using positive reinforcement in the form of praise and treats. Find what really gets your Boxsky excited and motivated, and use that specific treat to reward good behavior during training. And, of course, tell them how good of a boy or a girl they are being! Remember that an important part of training is also teaching your dog how to interact appropriately with other humans and other dogs. Visit our Husky Training hub to learn more. Training time or play time? It will be important to focus on training right away so these pups can learn good behaviors and hopefully avoid developing any bad habits! Start crate training and potty training early and stick to a routine that the puppy can easily follow to ensure success. While puppies can be quite demanding and take a lot of time and effort to care for, it will be well worth it, in the end, to have a well-trained and well-behaved adult Boxsky as a beloved member of your family. General Health Boxers may be more prone to developing certain diseases and conditions relating to their hearts, like aortic stenosis and cardiomyopathy. They are also prone to thyroid deficiency and degenerative myelopathy. Siberian Huskies also can face certain health concerns like hip dysplasia, cataracts, and progressive retinal dystrophy. All of these potential health concerns are able to be passed on to mixed-breed pups. So, is this Husky and Boxer mix a good fit for your family? So what is it about this Husky Boxer mix that makes it such a handful? There are a number of issues here that we need to consider with the behavioral traits of a Boxer mixed with Siberian Husky. Each parent dog has personality traits that are a problem if they are not controlled from an early age. The worst case here is that you will have a pup that exhibits many of these tendencies and requires a lot of training and patience. Issues to look out for with the Boxer Husky mix temperament include hyperactivity, a strong hunting drive and a desire to wander. There is also a good chance that they will be quite a dominant dog with an independent streak. Those that are allowed to run amok could prove to be a problem around other animals and strangers. Both need careful consideration when bringing Husky Boxer mix puppies into a family. Starting with the training, that independent streak and hyperactivity mean that they could struggle to focus and obey. This means that you need to assert your position in the pack, remain consistent and be patient. It is important to remember to work on socialization, boundary training and leash training to keep these dogs under control. Any owner that struggles should turn to an online guide like Doggy Dan the Online Dog Trainer for a more manageable approach to these different issues. As for the home environment, there are many additional considerations here that can help with training and caring for a Boxer mixed with Husky. First of all, these dogs can become loving members of the home that crave love and attention. This means that they will struggle if left alone for long periods. Try and limit this time alone and provide toys so they can entertain themselves. They also need place of space to burn off all that energy, so a yard is a must. However, that tendency to wander means that they will test out any boundaries. Want to train your dog without spending hundreds of dollars? Dachsador Main Characteristics Height: 15 to 25 inches tall Weight: 30 to 40 pounds Lifespan: 12 to 14 years Key Characteristics: Intelligent, highly trainable, high-energy, low-shedding Dachsador: History Of The Breed The Dachsador emerged in the last few decades by mixing Labrador retrievers with Dachshund dogs. Modern-day Labradors , which are the most popular dog breed in the United States, are descendants of Canadian fishing dogs that were imported to the UK and bred to work as gun-retriever dogs. Labrador retrievers are highly intelligent, have a great work ethic, and are eager to please. This makes them highly trainable and ideal to function as working dogs. Their friendly temperament also means they get along with most people, so they make excellent disability assistance dogs as well. They share much of the intelligence of Labradors and also have a great work ethic, but they are a bit more independent and can have a tendency to be a little stubborn. Nevertheless, they have become very popular companion dogs. So, when mixing a Dachshund and a Lab, most breeders hope to get a smaller dog with all the great characteristics of a Labrador retriever and the fun personality of a Dachshund. So, while it is possible to generalize about what to expect from a Dachsador, the results of cross-breeding can sometimes be unpredictable. Labradors are generally considered to be a medium-to-large breed. They range from .Dachshunds, on the other hand, are much smaller. A standard size Dachshund will only weigh between 15 and 30 pounds. There are also even smaller miniatures that weigh around 12 pounds, and kaninchens, which usually weigh between 8 and 11 pounds. Assuming you mix a Labrador retriever with a standard-sized Dachshund, you should expect a relatively small dog weighing only about 30 to 40 pounds. Breeding with a miniature Dachshund would give you an even smaller dog, though this is relatively rare. Whether a Dachsador will inherit the athletic build of a Labrador or the elongated body of a Dachshund is very difficult to predict. You will need to wait for your dog to age a bit to see whether they will have the broad face of a Labrador retriever or the longer face of a Dachshund. Either way, you can expect them to have long, floppy ears, which means regular cleaning is needed to avoid ear infections. However, they tend to shed far less than a Labrador retriever, which tends to have a high shedding coat. Most Dachshunds have a low-shedding coat, and this seems to be a dominant characteristic that they pass on to their Dachsador offspring. Although this is not always the case, Dachsadors tend to take the color of their Labrador parent. As a result, shades of chocolate brown, black, and yellow are the most common colors. Still, though, unexpected patterning is always a possibility when mixing breeds. Dachsador Temperament Intelligence And Trainability Both Labrador retrievers and Dachshund dogs are highly intelligent, so you can expect their offspring to be the brainy type, too. They are also both loyal breeds that quickly form close bonds with their families and like to be in the thick of everything. Your Dachsador pup is likely to nose their way into the center of most family activities. Labradors tend to be eager to please and motivated by reward, which makes them highly trainable. Dachshunds, on the other hand, tend to be more independent and stubborn. In particular, they can be quite difficult to toilet train, as they have a habit of marking their territory. They are also prone to certain problematic behaviors such as digging and chasing. Of course, both Dachshunds and Dachsadors are still trainable, and you can teach them the behavior that you expect. Just be prepared for the training process to take a bit more time and effort than if you were dealing with a purebred Lab. Need help house training your pup? Read our house training guide here. Friendliness And Aggression Labradors are incredibly friendly dogs. They rarely bark and they tend to make friends with strangers rather than alert you to their presence. Dachshunds, on the other hand, are a bit more territorial, and they can be quite vocal. From a young age, they will bark loudly when people or animals pass by the house. So, you should probably prepare for a barker when you adopt a Dachsador. Dachshunds also have an urge to chase, and they can be a bit aggressive on occasion. Combine this with the natural protective instincts of a Labrador, and you might find that your dog has a tendency to nip if they feel like their space or family is being threatened, especially younger members of the family. Both Labradors and Dachshunds love kids and can generally be trusted to play nicely with them. However, you should never leave young children unsupervised with any dog. These dogs love cuddles, and they will definitely hop up on the couch with you for some ear rubbing if you decide to let them. Energy Levels And Exercise Dachsadors also tend to be high energy, as both of their parent breeds are very active dogs. They generally need about 45 minutes to an hour of exercise each day, preferably split into two sessions. Meanwhile, although Dachshunds also enjoy your company, they are more independent and do a bit better when left alone. You can expect a Dachsador pup to do better than a Lab when left alone, but they still prefer to have people around most of the time. You can learn more about dog separation anxiety here. Dachsador Health Risks You can expect a Dachsador to have a life expectancy of around 12 to 14 years. This is a little bit shorter than some other Labrador mixes, but they are generally quite healthy dogs. However, there are a few common health concerns to look out for. Joint problems, in particular hip dysplasia, are very common among Labradors, and this is something that their Dachsador children may inherit. Hip dysplasia is a deformity in the hip joint that can deteriorate over time and cause mobility issues and pain. A healthy diet and plenty of exercise can help control the problem, but they may need a special bed that takes the pressure off their joints when they get a bit older. Dachshunds can be prone to back problems because of their long bodies, and this is something else that might show up in their crossbred offspring. How likely this is depends on the shape of the dog and their proportionality. These back issues can cause them significant pain, difficulty walking, and even paralysis in the long term. Dachsadors are also prone to developing a variety of different eye conditions that can affect their vision in later life. Both parent breeds also love to eat and will overeat if they are given the chance. Watch their calorie intake and weight to ensure their long-term health. With all of this information in mind, you might still be asking whether a Dachsador is the right dog for you. Consider the following questions when making your decision. Dachsadors, despite being relatively small in size, have a lot of energy. They need lots of exercise to burn off said energy and lots of attention to keep them happy and occupied. Do you have the energy and lifestyle needed to keep up with a dog like this? How Big Is Your Home? These dogs will still want plenty of room to play, but a large apartment or a place with a modest-sized backyard will probably be enough for them. Do You Work Long Hours? Dachsadors tend to do better than Labrador retrievers when left alone for long periods of time. However, if you abandon them at home for 12 hours a day, you might still return to find destruction. Dachshunds and Dachsadors can be notoriously stubborn, which makes them difficult to train. First-time owners might want to pick a more agreeable breed. Dachshunds and Dachsadors tend to be barkers and will want to raise the alarm every time someone gets too close to your house. This can be great if you are looking for security but challenging if you live in a busy apartment complex that could leave them barking all day long. Exactly how big your Dachsador puppy will get depends primarily on the size of their parents. While you can expect the average Dachsador to be no more than 20 inches tall and around 40 pounds, you can also sometimes encounter larger examples of the breed that are up to 25 inches tall and weigh up to 80 pounds. Look at the parents to get a good idea of the potential size of your pup. What is a Dachshund and Labrador mix dog called? When you mix a Dachshund and a Labrador retriever, you get a Dachsador. Labrador retrievers are all-around fantastic dogs. They are friendly, loyal, intelligent, and highly trainable. The problem with most Labradors is that they are very large and need a lot of space to thrive. Additionally, they are heavy shedders. Most Lab mixes are designed to deal with these particular issues. For example, Lab mixes with poodles, commonly known as Labradoodles, are particularly popular, as they tend to be smaller dogs with low-shedding coats. What is a Golden Dachshund? A Golden Dachshund is a mix between a Dachshund dog and a golden retriever. They tend to be very similar to Labrador and Dachshund mixes in their size, appearance, and temperament. They are also sometimes known as Goldie Weiners. Do Dachsadors shed? When breeding a Dachshund and a Labrador retriever, most people hope the resulting offspring will inherit the low-shedding coat of the Dachshund. While this happens often and seems to be a dominant gene, there are no guarantees. You may end up with a dog that sheds just as much as a standard Labrador retriever. How much is a Dachsador puppy? The Dachsador is not a very common breed, so their pups can be relatively difficult to find and fairly expensive. Are crossbreed dogs good dogs? Crossbreed dogs are deliberate mixes of two purebred dogs intended to produce the best characteristics of both. This can help control for difficult traits such as high shedding and inherited health conditions. However, unlike with purebred dogs where the passing along of character traits is fairly predictable, you can never be certain how traits will combine in a crossbreed dog until each unique puppy comes along. The Verdict Dachsadors are a relatively rare crossbreed dog that are a mix of the Labrador retriever with the Dachshund breed. The result is usually a much smaller dog than a Lab but with the same fun loving and energetic personality. They are incredibly loyal and will quickly become a member of the family. However, Dachsadors can be hard work. They often inherit the stubbornness of the Dachshund parent, which can make them difficult to train. Dachshunds also tend to be barkers, diggers, and chasers of small animals. These are all traits that their Dachsador children may inherit. Overall, the Dachsador is: Friendly and energetic, yet somewhat difficult to train More independent than their Lab parents, but stubborn Happy to live in a smaller space, but needs to exercise daily Experienced dog owners looking for a fun-loving dog like a Lab that can thrive in a smaller space will get along well with a Dachsador. First-time owners without a lot of experience training dogs might find these pups a little bit too independent and rebellious. If you do decide to adopt a Dachsador into your family, you will end up with a loveable and energetic dog that loves both cuddles on the couch and games in the park. It is certainly a rewarding relationship. Do you have experience raising Dachsadors? Share your advice with the community in the comments section below. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. Since then, the Dachshund has embraced a role as a top notch companion dog. The Dachsador has become known as a designer dog breed, but many of them unfortunately end up in shelters. Dachsador Size The Dachsador is usually described as a small dog. Although, as is always the case with newer mixed dog breeds, exact size standards might vary. Most weigh in at 30 to 40 pounds and range in height from 15 to 25 inches. Dachsador Personality The Dachsador is a great family dog and provides excellent companionship for both individuals and families. The dog is smart, too, so make sure to provide interactive toys to keep them alert and intrigued. If you have a fenced-in yard, your kids and your Dachsador will happily engage in play sessions together. Dachsador Health Dachsadors are generally considered to be healthy dogs; although, the breed can be predisposed to some of the same conditions that the Labrador Retriever and Dachshund face. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. The Dachsador is a high energy dog that will need at least two walks a day , ideally between 45 minutes and an hour. Such a smart dog will also benefit from obedience training—with suitable rewards, of course! This is important to avoid any periodontal problems. Ask your regular vet to recommend a brand of toothpaste and offer tips on brushing technique if needed. Check their ears for pests and debris regularly, especially after outdoor play. Clean them as recommended by your vet. Dachsador Feeding An ideal Dachsador diet should be formulated for a small-sized breed with high energy. The texture is usually described as being dense and wiry to the touch. In general, the Dachsador is a pretty adaptable dog when it comes to climate. Just make sure to provide a fashionable dog coat if the weather gets too frosty. Just be sure to make sure that both the dog and the children have learned how to respectfully behave and interact with each other. This is especially important if your Dachsador shows signs of having a stubborn side. Play time between dogs and kids should always be supervised, even with a well-trained dog. Smaller pets cannot be viewed as prey to chase. This also applies during outdoor walks—the mixed breed can easily be tempted to dash off and chase after other animals when their hunting heritage kicks in. Ultimately, early socialization really pays off with this breed. Make sure to reward your Dachsador for good behavior and adhere to a proper training regime when you bring them home to your family. Dachsador Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for Dachsador because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try Dachshund or Labrador Retriever breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. It can even vary within a single litter. Dachshunds have long backs and short legs, which this mix may inherit. Some will be more Lab-like in their structure. Coat Type and Colors The Labrador has a double layered coat with dense, water-resistant fur. In contrast, Dachshunds can have three coat types: smooth, longhaired, or wirehaired. Smooth Dachshunds have short, glossy coats, longhaired varieties have longer, wavier fur, and wirehaired varieties have coarse fur that is short over most of their body, but longer around their jaw, eyebrows, and ears. In terms of color, the Lab is available in black, chocolate, or yellow solid shades. Some Labs have mismarks, or even dilute fur, but most will be one of the three standard colors. Dachshunds are much more varied, with more unusual patterns like brindle and dapple also popular. This mix could inherit any of this coloring. So, take a look at the specific parents bred to get a better idea of what to expect from a puppy. As we know, these puppies can inherit any of the coat types from their two parent breeds. So, you should familiarise yourself with the appropriate coat type and learn how best to groom it. Generally, the Dachshund Lab mix will be a moderate to high shedding dog. They are not hypoallergenic, and may trigger allergy symptoms in people that usually suffer from dog allergies. Keep their nails trimmed to an appropriate length. You should do this from an early age so that your adult cross is happy around nail clippers or grinders. Dachshund Lab Mix Temperament Like appearance, the temperament of these mixed breed dogs will vary. The Lab and Dachshund have very different personalities, and a crossbred puppy could be like either purebred parent! Some traits are shared by both, making it more likely your puppy will inherit them. For instance, both the Labrador and the Dachshund are intelligent dogs. So, puppies will need high levels of mental stimulation to prevent boredom and destructive behaviors. On top of this, both are likely to form very strong bonds with their close family. But, the way this is expressed may differ. Labs tend to love everyone, as well as their family. But, Dachshunds are more often territorial over their family members, which can lead to aggression. Aggression Studies into dog aggression have shown that the Labrador is usually very low in aggression towards owners, strangers, and other dogs. However, the same studies have found that Dachshunds are among the most aggressive, in all of the same categories. This will encourage them to grow into happy, confident adults, and reduce any fear based aggression. As adults, this mix may still be wary around strangers, but will be much less likely to be aggressive. However, Dachshunds can have an independent streak. If this passes to your puppy, training can take a little longer. Positive reinforcement methods are the best way to work with your dog and reduce the risk of any stubbornness. Avoid punishment techniques, as these can actually result in aggression and regression in training! Potty training can be an issue for some Lab Dachshund mixes, so be sure to stay patient and consistent with your methods. The exercise needs of these dogs will vary from one to the next. Those with longer legs and shorter backs, like the Lab will be able to partake in a broader range of exercise styles. But, dogs with the short legs and long back of the Dachshund should avoid jumping and rough play. They may struggle with swimming and pulling themselves out of the water. Dachshund Lab Mix Health Your puppy will be at risk of hereditary health problems, but also problems related to their conformation. The more your mix puppy is like their Dachshund parent, the more likely it is they will suffer from these issues. The Labrador parent should have good hip and elbow scores, a recent clear eye test and be certified PRA clear. The Dachshund parent must never have suffered from any symptoms of intervertebral disc disease. They should also have clear heart and eye checks, as well as being PRA clear. Studies have shown that both the Labrador Retriever parent and the Dachshund parent live to an average age of 12 years. But, some individuals will live much longer than this! And, studies also suggest that mixed breed dogs tend to live longer than purebred dogs. So, it might take you a while to find puppies. More often than not, breeders will have to use artificial insemination. Not only is this more complex, but it can drive up the price of puppies. Just like certain coat colors can. The combination of a Labrador Retriever and a Dachshund resulted in a breed that depends its size on the stronger DNA lineage. However, there are more cases that the physique of the mix looks like a dachshund dog. There are also instances that its body resembles a combination of the two parents, making it long and medium-built. Short and dense coat type comes from the Labrador parent while the long and coarse coat type comes from the Dachshund. The temperament and personalities of the dachshund lab mix is a combination of the hunting and rescuing traits of its parents. Dachshund lab mix shows great affection and love to its owners but knows when and how to protect them, too. However, since the race is from the designer dogs era, the Dogs Registry of America Inc. However, there are still breeders out there that sell dachshund lab puppies. Buying in online ads or stores increases the risk of obtaining a puppy with a lot of health issues. These stores sometimes remove critical health issues and other problems that you need to know about your puppy. There are also cases that show fakes temperament information. To avoid this situation, you need to buy on reputable breeders out there. Try to ask for medical records of both of its parents to see if they had some issues. More importantly, you need to see both parents to observe their condition and temperaments. The state and personality of the parents will reflect the possible traits of your parent. Keep in mind that when you buy or own a dachshund lab puppy, avoid taking them outside up to eight weeks long. However, most of the time, dachshund lab puppies on sale are usually eight to twelve weeks old already. But you need to make sure that the puppy has its first vaccination before buying one. Some breeding facilities mistreat their dogs to gain more profit. There may be a lot of Dachshund lab mix puppies and dogs that their owners abandoned due to its unexpected growth. There are two possible types of coats that your dog has the chance to inherit. The mix can have a short and straight coat type from their Labrador parents. The dachshund lab mix possibly inherits the water-repellent coat type from its Labrador parent. However, the combination may inherit a smooth and long fur type from its Dachshund parent. When it inherited the Labrador coat type, you only need to brush its fur once a week. On the other hand, when it inherited the fur from its Dachshund parent, you need to brush its hair more times. In terms of shedding, a dachshund lab mix with longer coats is moderate shedders. In case you notice your pooch suffers from dry skin, consult with your vet about adding supplements to their nutrition. Try to use the best all-natural dog shampoos. A Lab Dachshund mix requires at least once a week of cleaning teeth. Try to use high-quality toothpaste for better cleaning. Since Lab Dachshund mix tends to dig often due to its hunting personality, you need to take care of its nails. You need to also check for wounds and nails breakage that can be the start of an infection. Consult your veterinarian when you see one. You need to take a good care of these pups, as IVDD can shorten their lifespan. Progressive Retinal Atrophy: This disease is the counterpart of human retinitis pigmentosa. This condition targets the retina of the dog, which will eventually lead to complete blindness. I got my second dog as a 16th birthday present, and her loyalty for me was just as strong as my first. I hope that my contribution to Animalso will help others find dogs who give them that same unconditional love. But I adopted my little Hank recently and he seems both very playful and very cuddly. He likes to snuggle a lot but is very active too. Just wondering if I should expect him to go crazy one of these days? We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. It is, therefore, no surprise that some breeders are starting to mix the two. Considering whether a German Shepherd Lab Mix is right for you? Read on for everything you need to know about this amazing mixed-breed dog. Lab German Shepherd Mix Overview Size — 22 to 25 inches tall and 50 to 80 pounds Coat — Medium length, double coat, color varies Shedding — Yes Temperament — Intelligent, active, and loyal, but can be wary of strangers Trainable — Highly, but prone to destructive behavior when bored Activity — Highly active needs two hours of activity per day Best For — Families and people with active lifestyles and lots of time to spend with them What is a German Shepherd Lab Mix? As these dogs are roughly the same size, the mother can be of either breed as long as she is larger than the father, to ensure against any difficulty in the birthing process. Sheprador Appearance As is the case for most mix-breed dogs, it is a bit of a gamble what you will get when these two come together. They might have the pointed ears of a German Shepherd or the floppy ears of a Labrador. There is nothing to do but wait and see. But luckily, both German Shepherds and Labradors are attractive dogs, so however they turn out they should be handsome. That said, we can make a few generalizations about the appearance of Shepradors. Size As both German Shepherds and Labradors are medium- to large-sized dogs, you can expect their mixed offspring to be the same. German Shepherds are the larger of the two and are usually between 50 and 90 pounds and 22 to 26 inches tall. Labradors are only a little bit smaller, at 50 to 80 pounds and 22 to 25 inches tall. So expect your German Shepherd Lab Mix to stand between 22 and 25 inches tall and weigh 50 to 80 pounds. You can narrow this range down a bit by looking at the size of the parents. Color The color of these gorgeous mixed-breed dogs is also highly variable, and you might end up with a pooch of a solid coat color, like Labs, or striking mixed coloring, like German Shepherds. A lot of this depends on the color of the Labrador parent, whether they are yellow, black, or chocolate. As a general rule, the darker the lab parent, the darker the coat of the pup. But you also get white German Shepherd Dogs, which can result in striking white Shepradors. Coat When it comes to coat length, you should expect in most cases that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will have a shorter coat, like that of a Labrador. This seems to be a dominant gene, and the vast majority of German Shepherd Lab Mixes end up with this type of coat. The dog will certainly have a double coat, as this is a feature of both breeds. The undercoat will be soft and fluffy, and the guard coat rough. This does mean that they shed—a lot. This is not the type of dog to have at home if anyone in the household suffers from allergies. Shepherd Lab Mix Puppy Lab German Shepherd Mix Character While temperament is again unpredictable with mix-breeds, both German Shepherds and Labradors are intelligent, active, and loyal dogs, so you can expect their offspring to share these traits. German Shepherds are very intelligent and have a natural protective instinct. They have a tendency to guard whatever they consider to be theirs. Labradors were originally bred as gun dogs, to retrieve the wild game of hunters. As such, they are very obedient and tend to be pleasers, and they like nothing more than spending time with their humans. As both breeds are intelligent and highly trainable, you can expect these characteristics to appear in a Sheprador. However, whether they will be a guard dog that can be aggressive with strangers, or a pleaser that is great with children, you will have to wait and see. While dogs are a mix of nature and nurture, if you want to take a Lab German Shepherd mix into a family home, or if you are a first-time dog owner, you will want to be careful about which individual dog you choose. Activity Levels However their personality turns out, you are going to have a dog with a lot of energy. These larger dogs that are used to working need around two hours of exercise each day. Their intelligence also means they get bored easily, and when they do get bored, they can have a tendency toward destructive behavior, which means digging and chewing. They do best with active owners with whom they can go walking, hiking, and running. Whether these dogs will like swimming is a coin toss. While Labradors love the water, German Shepherds are a bit more wary. But their size and adventurous nature mean they can be trained to love the water. So you have a good chance that your Lab German Shepherd Mix will be a swimmer. These dogs are loyal and love being around their humans. You will find them at their happiest and healthiest when you make them part of the family and shower them with love. Exercise Ideally, your Sheprador will need around two hours of exercise per day. This might be more than just a long walk, as their high energy levels mean they will like to run as well. They will enjoy tackling tough trails with you at their side, and the retriever nature of Labradors also means this breed is likely to enjoy a good game of fetch. Bear in mind that these dogs will need this level of exercise rain or shine, or they will become frustrated and start engaging in destructive behavior. This is not only bad for them in general, but can put excess pressure on their hips, which are also prone to issues. Intellectual Stimulation German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs are invariably highly intelligent, which makes them easy to train but also means they get bored very easily. When they do get bored, they are smart enough to find trouble, and you may come home to quite the scene. These dogs need to spend time with people to occupy their minds, and they also benefit from intellectually stimulating games. But expect them to make short work of these challenges, as they are chewers. You will be getting them new games quite often. Companionship Labradors need a lot of companionship, and this is a trait their offspring with German Shepherds are likely to share. Not only will they get bored and start acting up, but they can become depressed. Grooming Both German Shepherds and Labradors are shedders, so you can be sure their Sheprador offspring will be as well. This is just a fact of life with Shepradors. They will need to be brushed at least twice a week, and as often as once a day during the shedding seasons fall and spring. As well as brushing, invest in a good quality vacuum cleaner that has special functionality to help you pick up dog hair. These dogs are also likely to enjoy jumping up on the couch for a snuggle and a snooze. Invest in coverings and be sure your swanky vacuum cleaner has an attachment for upholstery. Their coat is not the only part of their grooming to attend to. You need to clean their teeth three times a week, with a brush or with dental treats. Finally, trim their nails every three months. This is both for their health and the health of your home, as their nails can damage your floors. For a big dog like this, it can be a good idea to take them to the vet to get their nails clipped. But if you feel confident to do this at home, check out our list of the best nail clippers. Diet German Shepherd Lab Mixes are big dogs that have lots of energy, but they also have a tendency toward obesity, which means they have to get their energy from good sources. This means high-quality protein and fats over carbohydrates. Preferably this means meals made from quality meats rather than meals or byproducts. When looking at the ingredient list, look for named meats at the first ingredient. Lab German Shepherd Mixes also benefit from novel proteins in their diet, as they can be prone to allergies. Dogs tend to develop allergies to the meats they eat the most, which often means beef and chicken. When they are puppies, Shepradors should be fed three times a day, and this should be cut down to two times a day from about four months of age. As a rule, dogs need 25 to 30 calories per pound of their weight per day, though you should watch their individual weight and energy level to see if you need to adjust their meals up or down. You can also check the label on your dog food to get a rough estimate of how much you should be feeding your Sheprador. Of course the amount will also vary depending on how often you exercise your dog. Known Health Problems While there is no limit to the number of health problems that a dog of any breed can develop, or they might not develop any at all, some dog breeds are more prone to some conditions than others. German Shepherd Lab Mix dogs have the potential to develop the health problems that are common in goth German Shepherds and Labradors. These include: Hip and Elbow Dysplasia — This is a condition where the hip and elbow joints do not develop normally and that can cause extreme pain and arthritis in later life. For more information check out our list of Glucosamine for Dogs. Progressive Retinal Atrophy — This is a group of degenerative diseases that affect the eyes and can lead to blindness. Shepradors are also prone to eat whatever is put in front of them, so you need to be conscious of what you are feeding them. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus — Poor diet can lead the stomach to dilate and expand, in turn leading to a twisting of the stomach that is life-threatening. It can block the flow of blood to the abdomen, leading to rupture of the stomach walls, and put pressure on the diaphragm thereby inhibiting the lungs. Degenerative Radiculomyelopathy — This is a condition that affects the spinal cord and leads to progressive weakness of the hind limbs, and eventually paralysis. Panosteitis — This is an inflammation of the outer surface of the long bones in the legs, resulting in a shifting lameness and making bones more susceptible to breaks. Allergies — Dogs can be born with allergies or develop them over time. Dogs often develop allergies if they eat the same foods consistently. Underactive Thyroid — The thyroid manages hormones, and an underactive thyroid is unable to secrete the required hormones. This can result in weight gain, lethargy, and cold intolerance. At this time, their energy levels will drop and they will need some changes in their diet and exercise. GSD Lab Mix Puppy But no matter how well trained they are, if they are left to get bored for too long, they can engage in some pretty destructive behavior, such as digging and chewing everything in sight. You have been forewarned. The highly assertive nature of German Shepherds means they do not respond well to domination training. They are likely to revolt when subjected to punishment. The best way to train a Labrador German Shepherd Mix is through positive reinforcement. Labradors are pleasers that love to make their humans happy. This means their offspring are also likely to feel the same way. So they will respond rapidly to training based on rewards for positive behavior. Deal with this behavior early, with specific training for dealing with children and strangers. They are very active and need lots of attention, so they need to be in households that support this. But they do great with adults and kids, so they can be a great family pet. Remember that German Shepherd Labrador Mixes need around two hours of exercise every day, so they need someone who can commit to that level of activity. But at the same time, it means they are the type of dog you can take on all of your adventures if you like hiking and trailing. They also need attention and stimulation throughout the day. If anyone in the house suffers with pet hair allergies, this is another reason Labrador German Shepherd Mixes are not the right dog for you, as they shed a lot. Consider something like a Labradoodle or Goldendoodle instead. Also, ask for medical records of the parents, to see what health conditions the pup might be prone to in the future. If you decide to adopt a mature dog, spend a bit of time with them to see what their temperament is like. History of the Breeds German Shepherd German Shepherds originated in Germany in the late 19th century as a sheep herding dog. But, because they are very intelligent, trainable, obedient, and strong, they have since moved into many different working roles including police, military, search and rescue, and disability assistance. German Shepherds can have a reputation for being aggressive, but they are more alert and wary than aggressive. They can have a tendency to become overprotective of family and territory. But if socialized and trained properly, this tendency should be highly manageable. German Shepherds are the second-most popular dog in the United States and the seventh-most popular dog in the United Kingdom. Labrador Labradors, also known as Labrador Retrievers, were initially used in Newfoundland as fishing dogs to retrieve fish that had gotten away. Because they are incredibly friendly but also intelligent and therefore easy to train, today Labradors are favored as disability assistance dogs, often helping individuals with blindness, ptsd, mobility issues and autism. Labradors are the most popular dog breed in the United States. They are intelligent and therefore easy to train, and loving and loyal, so they will quickly feel like part of the family. However, they do need a lot of exercise and attention, so adopting a Sheprador into your family is a commitment. German Shepherds have a reputation for being aggressive, but it is not really deserved. They are natural watchdogs and reserved around strangers, but they are not aggressive dogs that are likely to attack. They are also intelligent and easy to train, which means easy to control. Beagles, Poodles, Boxers, Golden Retrievers and Spaniels are all extremely friendly dogs as well, many specifically bred to be companions. They do best with active people or families who are full of people to love them. Like all dogs, they will do their best when they are cared for properly. This means training them appropriately, exercising them, keeping them mentally stimulated, and feeding them well. But these loyal pooches will repay your care and commitment with a lot of love and affection. Helps ease anxiety in their new home. We love using Bully Sticks to help divert these unwanted behaviors. For a list of all the supplies we get for our new service dog puppies check out our New Puppy Checklist on the PuppyInTraining. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Click here for more information on this characteristic German Sheprador Highlights The German Sheprador is a mixed breed dog. The main colors of German Shepradors are black, white, red, cream, blue, and grey. Sometimes their coats are solid, and sometimes they have a mix of colors. While they are not a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers, their coats are pretty easy to care for. A good brushing per week will probably do the job. Many German Shepradors absolutely love to run and play in the snow. Their double coats also help to keep them cool during hot summer months. German Shepradors make excellent family companions and watchdogs. Protective in nature, they will alert when strangers approach. They can easily become board, depressed, and frustrated, which will result in unwanted behaviors. German Sheprador History The German Sheprador dog breed may have existed naturally over the years, but designer breeders started intentionally mixing German Shepherds and Labradors in North America, possibly in the s. Breeders wanted to mix the two parent breeds to minimize health problems that affect many purebreds as well as create an ultimate family companion and watchdog. They continued to create German Shepradors as demand for the mixed breed pups climbed. Even though the German Sheprador got their start as a designer breed, some have ended up in shelters or in the care of rescue groups. Consider adoption if you decide this is the dog for you. Check your local shelters, look up German Sheprador rescues, or check with breed-specific German Shepherd and Labrador rescues, as they sometimes help to re-home mixed breeds. German Sheprador Size As the German Sheprador is a relatively new mixed breed, there are few standards when it comes to size. That said, as a mix between German Shepherd and Labrador parents, you can expect the German Sheprador to be on the large side. Most weigh in at 60 to 95 pounds and range in height from 20 to 27 inches at the shoulder. That said, many can be smaller or larger. German Sheprador Personality German Shepradors make excellent family companions and watchdogs. However, once they befriend you, you have a friend for life. These pups hail from a line of two working parents. Their German Shepherd parents regularly work as military, police, and guard dogs, while their Labrador Retriever parents have jobs as hunting and guide dogs. German Shepradors like to work and need to have a job to do, whether big or small. Give them a sense of purpose, and this dog will earn their keep ten fold. They are highly trainable, and thrive on positive reenforcement. Do not leave them alone for long periods. While most are generally healthy, some may be prone to a few health issues, which is why it is important to maintain good care and regular veterinary checkups. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. German Shepradors are prone to weight gain, and they have high energy levels. Make sure your dog gets at least one hour long walk per day with several shorter walks mixed in. Hiking and other adventurous activities are also recommended. Check their ears for debris and pests daily and clean them as recommended by your vet. They should not be clicking against the floor. Your groomer can help with this. You should brush their teeth daily, as this mixed breed is prone to tartar build-up. Normal play on grass is fine, as is puppy agility with its one-inch jumps. Crate and kennel training should start in puppyhood. German Sheprador Feeding An ideal German Sheprador diet should be formulated for a large breed with high energy. They have a tendency to gain weight if they are overfed, so you should stick to a regular feeding schedule and not leave food out during the day. Limit their amount of treats, as well. They usually have medium length, dense coats, and while they are not a good choice of dog for allergy sufferers, their coats are pretty easy to care for. A good brushing per week will probably do the job and bathing is recommended every few months with a mild shampoo. Too much bathing can strip the coat of its natural oils. Their double coats do shed quite a bit. You will definitely want a vacuum on hand. You will need it. Have you tried robot vacuums? See if the Eufy RoboVac is right for you! Their double coat gives them an edge when it comes to extreme weather. Many of these dogs absolutely love to run and play in the snow. Their double coats also helps to keep them cool during hot summer months. Keep in mind they are an indoor dog and need to live indoors. Like all dogs, however, German Shepradors need to be trained how to behave around children and vice versa. As with every breed, you should always teach children how to approach and touch dogs, and always supervise any interactions between dogs and young children to prevent any biting or ear or tail pulling on the part of either party. No dog, no matter how friendly, should ever be left unsupervised with a child. Learn more about this awesome breed by reading about their parent breeds the German Shepherd and Labrador Retriever. German Sheprador Rescue Groups It may be hard to find a breed-specific rescue for German Shepradors because they are a mixed breed. However, you may want to try German Shepherd Dog or Labrador Retriever breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. This can contribute to obesity and other health problems related to being overweight. Reward good behavior by patting your dog, playing with him or giving him a good scratch. Tell your dog what a good dog he is and combines this with a lot of pats as reinforcement. Every dog takes his time so you must be patient. His bed should at the same place where he found it the first time while his food bowls should also be in the same area. Consistency is the key to training dogs important stuff. Also, consider talking to everyone at home regarding your rules and commands to reinforce consistency in training your dog. Train Your Dog In A Familiar Environment Dogs like the Lab are easily distracted; therefore you must train your pup in a quiet and familiar environment first before you take him out for further training. Start inside a quiet room with only you and him. You can train him outdoors once he is less distracted to noise and the presence of other pets and people. You may also opt for professional training for your Lab German Shepherd mix dog if you want your pup to grow up and become a service dog or police dog. German Shepherd Lab Mix and Families Lab German Shepherds can be great family dogs because these dogs love to be with their masters and to please them every way they can. These are patient with children and will never roughhouse or bite. They can even tolerate toddlers and very intense games like dress up and role play games. Lab German Shepherd mix dogs will love to be with other pets and even other dogs. They are not domineering and will never cause a fight. The Lab German Shepherd mix may become anti-social and may become aggressive with people or other dogs when they are not introduced to people and other pets early on. Your dog should be trained first and exposed to other dogs and people to prevent this untoward behavior. As a medium to large breed, Labrador Retrievers need at least one year to reach their full size. A general rule of thumb suggests your Lab should be at or close to its full size by their first birthday. However, bigger-boned Lab puppies can keep growing and filling out their chest up to 18 months old. How big should a 6-month-old Labrador Retriever be? The average Lab weight at six months old is about 40 to 55 pounds for males or 30 to 35 pounds for females. Please keep in mind that these numbers are averages, and every puppy will grow at a slightly different rate. How much bigger will my Labrador Retriever get? There are three ways to predict the size of a Labrador Retriever at maturity: Age. Labrador Retrievers typically reach their full height and weight around their first birthday. Larger Labs may need up to 18 months to fill out their chest, but any weight gain after 12 months should be minimal overall. If your Lab is less than a year old, they are likely still growing and putting on muscle to reach their adult size. Paw Size. If their paws look oversized next to their legs and body, then they are probably still growing, as this is a classic puppy feature. Lastly, if you purchased your Lab through a breeder, you can contact them for a more exact height and weight estimate. What is the size of a full-grown Labrador Retriever? A full-grown Labrador Retriever weighs between 65 and 80 pounds and stands about .The average weight of a full-grown female Labrador Retriever should be about 55 to 70 pounds, standing at .Make sure to consult with your veterinarian to ensure that your Lab is maintaining a healthy weight for its body size. The Labrador Retriever growth rate should be indicative of its athletic body and muscular build. Did you know. ? Their webbed paws made them strong swimmers, along with their otter tail, which acts like a powerful rudder when retrieving ducks. English nobles spotted the dogs and brought them home across the Atlantic, where breeders continued to refine the breed into its own variation. Between their friendly demeanor, adaptability, and outgoing disposition, they make ideal family members. As cherished members of our families, Labs deserve the best care. Unfortunately, like many other purebred dogs, Labrador Retrievers are more susceptible to various health issues. Some of the most common examples include:. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Built for sport, the Lab is muscular and athletic. They have a short, easy-care coat, friendly demeanor, keen intelligence, and plenty of energy. Devotion to this breed runs deep; Labs are loving, people-oriented dogs who live to serve their families, and owners and fans sometimes liken their Labs to angels. The breed originated on the island of Newfoundland, off the northeastern Atlantic coast of Canada. Originally called the St. Today, most Labs skip the hard labor and spend their days being pampered and loved by their people. However, some Labs still serve as indispensable working dogs. They also excel as a search and rescue dog or as a retriever for hunters, thanks to their athletic build, strong nose, and courageous nature. And Labs have also become the breed to beat at dog sports such as agility and obedience competitions, especially obedience. In fact, owners say their sweet, helpful Lab is likely to greet an intruder and happily show them where the goods are stashed. One role has remained constant: wonderful companion and friend. Labrador Retriever Highlights Friendly and outgoing. Labrador Retrievers are known for their friendly and outgoing personalities. They are good with people of all ages and other animals. Intelligent and trainable. Labrador Retrievers are intelligent dogs that are easy to train. They are often used as working dogs, such as guide dogs, search and rescue dogs, and therapy dogs. Labrador Retrievers are loyal and devoted dogs that make great family pets. They are known for their gentle nature and love of children. Grooming needs are minimal. Labrador Retrievers have a short, thick coat that is easy to groom. They only need to be brushed a few times a week and bathed as needed. Overall, the Labrador Retriever is a versatile and popular dog breed that makes a great family pet. They are friendly, intelligent, and trainable, and they have a low grooming requirement. If you are considering getting a Labrador Retriever, be sure to do your research to find a reputable breeder. Labrador Retrievers are wonderful dogs, but they require a lot of time and attention. They are not a good choice for people who are not active or who do not have a lot of time to spend with their pets. Originally called St. Although their heritage is unknown, many believe the St. The second Earl of Malmesbury was one of the first, and had St. The third Earl of Malmesbury was the first person to refer to the dogs as Labradors. In Newfoundland, the breed disappeared because of government restrictions and tax laws. Families were allowed to keep no more than one dog, and owning a female was highly taxed, so girl puppies were culled from litters. In England, however, the breed survived, and the Kennel Club recognized the Labrador Retriever as a distinct breed in .They also top the list in Canada and England. Today, Labs work in drug and explosive detection, search and rescue, therapy, assistance to those with disabilities, and as retrievers for hunters. They also excel in all forms of dog competitions: show, field, agility, and obedience. Labrador Retriever Size Males stand .Females stand .Aside from a winning personality, they have the intelligence and eagerness to please that make them easy to train. Training is definitely necessary because this breed has a lot of energy and exuberance. The working heritage of the Lab means they are active. This breed needs activity, both physical and mental, to keep them happy. There is some variation in the activity level of Labs: some are rowdy, others are more laid back. All thrive on activity. Some dogs show pain and lameness on one or both rear legs, but you may not notice any signs of discomfort in a dog with hip dysplasia. As the dog ages, arthritis can develop. Dogs with hip dysplasia should not be bred. Elbow Dysplasia : This is a heritable condition common to large-breed dogs. This can lead to painful lameness. Your vet may recommend surgery to correct the problem or medication to control the pain. Osteochondrosis Dissecans OCD : This orthopedic condition, caused by improper growth of cartilage in the joints, usually occurs in the elbows, but it has been seen in the shoulders, as well. It causes a painful stiffening of the joint, to the point that the dog is unable to bend his elbow. It can be detected in dogs as early as four to nine months of age. Cataracts : As in humans, canine cataracts are characterized by cloudy spots on the eye lens that can grow over time. Cataracts can usually be surgically removed with good results. Early in the disease, dogs become night-blind. As the disease progresses, they lose their daytime vision, as well. Many dogs adapt to limited or complete vision loss very well, as long as their surroundings remain the same. Epilepsy : Labs can suffer from epilepsy, which causes mild or severe seizures. Seizures may be exhibited by unusual behavior, such as running frantically as if being chased, staggering, or hiding. Seizures are frightening to watch, but the long-term prognosis for dogs with idiopathic epilepsy is generally very good. Puppies are born with TVD, which is a malformation of the tricuspid valve on the right side of the heart. It can be mild or severe; some dogs live with no symptoms, others die. TVD is detected by ultrasound. Research is ongoing to learn how widespread it is in the breed, as well as treatment. Myopathy : Myopathy affects the muscles and nervous system. The first signs are seen early, as young as six weeks and often by seven months of age. A puppy with myopathy is tired, stiff when he walks and trots. He may collapse after exercise. In time, the muscles atrophy and the dog can barely stand or walk. There is no treatment, but rest and keeping the dog warm seems to reduce symptoms. Dogs with myopathy should not be bred because it is considered a heritable disease. Bloat occurs when the stomach is distended with gas or air and then twists. The dog is unable to belch or vomit to rid themselves of the excess air in their stomach, and blood flow to the heart is impeded. Blood pressure drops and the dog goes into shock. Without immediate medical attention, the dog can die. Suspect bloat if your dog has a distended abdomen, is drooling excessively, and retching without throwing up. Theyalso may be restless, depressed, lethargic, and weak with a rapid heart rate. If you notice these symptoms, get your dog to the vet as soon as possible. Acute Moist Dermatitis: Acute moist dermatitis is a skin condition in which the skin red and inflamed. It is caused by a bacterial infection. The more common name of this health concern is hot spots. Treatment includes clipping the hair, bathing in medicated shampoo, and antibiotics. Cold Tail : Cold tail is a benign, though painful condition common to Labs and other retrievers. The dog may bite at the tail. It is thought to be a problem with the muscles between the vertebrae in the tail. Weekly checking and cleaning if necessary helps prevent infection. Labrador Retriever Care The lovable Lab needs to be around their family, and is definitely not a backyard dog. Labs show some variation in their activity levels, but all of them need activity, both physical and mental. Daily minute walks, a romp at the dog park, or a game of fetch, are a few ways to help your Lab burn off energy. However, a puppy should not be taken for too long walks and should play for a few minutes at a time. It is up to you to end play and training sessions. Without training, a rambunctious Lab puppy will soon grow to be a very large, rowdy dog. Luckily, Labs take to training well; in fact, they often excel in obedience competitions. Start with puppy kindergarten , which not only teaches your pup good canine manners, but helps them learn how to be comfortable around other dogs and people. Look for a class that uses positive training methods that reward the dog for getting it right, rather than punishing them for getting it wrong. Normal play on grass is fine, as is puppy agility, with its one-inch jumps. Labrador Retriever Feeding Recommended daily amount: 2. They are almost square in appearance, with a strong body and sturdy legs. The maximum height for a male is 24 inches, which puts them in the medium-size dog category, but their sturdy build can make them seem much larger. Weights range from 85 pounds for a large male to 55 pounds for a smaller female. Field line bred dogs are often taller and somewhat thinner in build. Labrador retrievers are easily recognized by their broad head, drop ears and large, expressive eyes. Two trademarks of the Lab are the thick but fairly short double coat, which is very water repellent, and the well known "otter tail. The feet are described as "webbed," with longer skin between the toes to aid in swimming. The Labrador retriever is a moderately fast maturing breed, reaching adult height from six to 12 months, but possibly still filling out up to 2 years of age. Many Labs reach 12 to 14 years of age. Personality: In general, Labrador retrievers are excellent family dogs, as long as you keep in mind their need for exercise and training. These are dogs bred to work and work hard and they love to have jobs to do, particularly retrieving. Labs are usually good with other dogs, other pets, and children as long as training has toned down their natural exuberance. They are strong dogs and need some obedience training at an early age or they can be seen dragging their owners down the street at will. Owing to their energetic nature, Labradors who are left alone or not well exercised can become destructive — chewing, digging and barking to excess. The field line dogs are especially high-energy dogs, while some of the show line dogs become perfect couch potatoes at an early age. Chewing can be a problem because the strong retrieve urge gives them an oral fixation. Sturdy chew toys, exercise and training all help with this. Living With: Obviously, Labradors have a number of endearing traits or they would not be so popular. They are intelligent and fairly easy to train, partly from their desire to work with people. They are "easy keepers" and can become overweight if they are not exercised and food portions adjusted as needed. Labs are excellent family dogs because they do want to be with people and many do not do well as kennel dogs. Labradors do tend to be protective of their families and homes but are usually happy to greet company, too. With the strong retrieving instinct, they can develop into destructive chewers if not given appropriate toys and guidance. Labs may tend to "mouth" people and the solution is often simply to give them a toy to carry around, so their mouths are already full! These are very strong dogs and early training is necessary to have a dog that walks nicely on lead. The wonderful double coat that keeps the Labrador warm while retrieving in icy water also gives this breed top billing as shedders. Normally, their coats do fine with a quick weekly grooming, but at shedding time daily grooming is needed. The amount of exercise they need varies with the different lines: field line dogs can run all day, whereas show line dogs only need moderate exercise. History: Early in the s, some of the multipurpose dogs used in North America mostly Canada by hunters were shipped back to England. Many of these "water dogs" were of the Newfoundland type, but the smaller ones were often designated "St John's" dogs. In England, the breed was developed and refined probably with some flat-coated retriever input into the breed we recognize today. As is evidenced by their name, Labrador retrievers were bred and selected for their outstanding retrieving abilities, particularly in water. They have worked as partners with duck hunters in all kinds of weather and conditions. Their intelligence and desire to work as a partner with man has led to many other jobs, and to their current status as popular pets. Today, Labradors excel as service and guide dogs, family pets, scenting dogs for the military, customs and arson task force dogs, search and rescue dogs as well as hunting companions and performance dogs. The breed's good nature has propelled it to the number one ranking in popularity in America, a position it intends to keep. Despite their fame as indoor pets, they are even more at home outdoors. It should always be remembered that Labradors are water retrievers at heart and from early on, puppies show a strong desire to carry things around with them and a strong attraction to water, even puddles! It was developed in the United Kingdom from fishing dogs imported from the colony of Newfoundland now a province of Canada , and was named after the Labrador region of that colony. It is among the most commonly kept dogs in several countries, particularly in the European world. The Labrador is friendly, energetic, and playful. It may also be trained as a guide or assistance dog , or for rescue or therapy work. Another early advocate of these Newfoundland fishing dogs was the 2nd Earl of Malmesbury , who bred them for their expertise in waterfowling. The dogs Buccleuch Avon and Buccleuch Ned, given by Malmesbury to Buccleuch, were mated with bitches carrying blood from those originally imported by the 5th Duke and the 10th Earl of Home. The offspring are the ancestors of all modern Labradors. John's water dogs bred by European settlers in Newfoundland were first introduced to Britain from ships trading between Canada and Poole in Dorset. These were then bred with British hunting dogs to create what became known as the Labrador Retriever. Early writers have confused the Labrador with the much larger Newfoundland and the Lesser Newfoundland , with Charles St. John even referring to the Lesser Newfoundland as the Newfoundland. Colonel Peter Hawker describes the first Labrador as being not larger than an English Pointer , more often black than other colours, long in its head and nose with a deep chest, fine legs, and short and smooth coat, and did not carry its tail as highly as the Newfoundland. John's breed of these dogs [6] [7] in the fifth edition of his book Introductions to Young Sportsman, published in .Black Chocolate There is a great deal of variety among Labradors. The following characteristics are typical of the conformation show bred bench-bred lines of this breed in the United States and are based on the American Kennel Club standard. Size: Labradors are a medium-large breed. They should be as long from the withers to the base of the tail as they are from the floor to the withers. The AKC standard includes an ideal weight for dogs of 25—36 kg 55—80 lb and for bitches as 25—32 kg 55—70 lb. The coat is water-resistant, so the dog does not get cold when taking to the water in the winter. That means that the dog naturally has a slightly dry, oily coat. Acceptable colours are black, yellow, and chocolate. The eyes should be kind and expressive. Appropriate eye colours are brown and hazel. The lining around the eyes should be black. The ears should hang close to the head and be set slightly above the eyes. Jaws: The jaws should be strong and powerful. The muzzle should be of medium length and should not be too tapered. The jaws should hang slightly and curve gracefully back. Body: The body should have a powerful and muscular build. The tail and coat are designated "distinctive [or distinguishing] features" of the Labrador by both the Kennel Club and AKC. If a dog carried wild type alleles at all three loci, the dog will have a yellow coat. If a dog has a loss-of-function mutation at MC1R, it will also have a yellow coat, regardless of their genotype at the other two loci. Within the breed, this trait is not visible. Show and field lines[ edit ] Head and muzzle appearance: field left , and show right , showing the shorter muzzle length, more solid appearance head, and "pronounced" stop of the latter As a result of specialised breeding, there are significant differences between field and trial-bred and show-bred lines of Labradors. In the United States, the former are sometimes mistakenly referred to as "American" and the latter as "English", in fact, both field and show types are bred in both countries and all Labrador Retrievers are descended from British lines. In this experiment, German Shepherds had the highest chance of not completing it. However, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers had a higher success rate after going through longer training than the training required for Labrador Retrievers. For retrieving the Labrador Retriever has a soft mouth , a trait that allows it to carry game and waterfowl without damaging it. It continues in that role today, along with the Leonberger , Newfoundland and Golden Retriever dogs; they are used at the Italian School of Canine Lifeguard. During the Vietnam War they were used as scout dogs to track down dead or wounded soldiers or enemy positions. Notable issues related to health and well-being include inherited disorders and obesity most are missing all or parts of the appetite-regulating POMC gene. As of , it was widely considered the most popular breed in the world. Vocality level 4 in 5 Disclaimer: While the characteristics mentioned here may frequently represent this breed, dogs are individuals whose personalities and appearances will vary. Please consult the adoption organization for details on a specific pet. Temperament Few breeds so richly deserve their popularity as does the Labrador Retriever. When trained, the breed is obedient and amiable and tolerates the antics of children, other dogs, and other pets. The Lab is a calm house dog, playful yard dog, and intense field dog, all on the same day. Labs are eager to please, enjoys learning, and excel in obedience. It is a powerful breed that loves to swim and retrieve. Labradors need daily physical and mental challenges to keep occupied. A bored Lab can get into trouble! Upkeep Labradors are active and sociable dogs. They need daily exercise, preferably in the form of retrieving and swimming. Owners with swimming pools either must fence them out or be prepared to share the pool with dogs. The Lab coat sheds water easily. Weekly brushing is needed to remove dead hair. Health Major concerns: CHD, elbow dysplasia, OCD, obesity, patellar luxation Minor concerns: cataract, CPRA, hot spots, retinal dysplasia, hypothyroidism Occasionally seen: diabetes, entropion, distichiasis, tricuspid valve dysplasia, centronuclear myopathy, exercise-induced collapse Suggested tests: hip, elbow, eye, exercise-induced collapse DNA , centronuclear myopathy , knee Life span: 10—12 years History The original Labradors were all-purpose water dogs originating in Newfoundland, not Labrador. Not only did the breed not originate in Labrador, but it also was not originally called the Labrador Retriever. These dogs—medium-sized black dogs with close hair—not only retrieved game but also retrieved fish, pulled small fishing boats through icy water and helped the fisherman in any task involving swimming. Eventually, the breed died out in Newfoundland in large part because of a heavy dog tax. However, a core of Labradors had been taken to England in the early s, and it is from these dogs, along with crosses to other retrievers, that the breed continued. It was also in England that the breed earned its reputation as an extraordinary retriever of upland game. Initially, black labs were favored over yellow or chocolate colors. By the early s, the other colors had become more accepted. The popularity of this breed has grown steadily until the Labrador Retriever became the most popular breed in America in and remains so today. Related Content.

Liver points are acceptable, but not preferred in red poodles. Red poodles are a stunningly beautiful color, one that is very close to the color of humans with natural red hair. Poodles come in the light red new copper color to the darkest of any human with dark auburn hair. Ilse Konig was the first person who developed the red color of poodles. It was first developed on the Standard Poodle, then crossed with an Apricot female miniature Poodle. After many years of selective breeding, we now have Red Poodles in all the poodle sizes. While developing the red color, it was imperative to breed for all the qualities of a well-bred poodle, which includes temperament, health, conformation, and beauty. Missing any one of these characteristics the red poodles would not be complete! Typically, red poodle puppies are born quite red, then, when they are about 6 weeks old, their coats will turn less red. Then at about 10 weeks, you can see a definite dark red line next to the skin where the new coat color is coming in. It is thrilling to see this in a red poodle puppy. Their mature red color changes cannot be predicted by the color of the puppy. Some dark apricot poodles will stay a brighter color than the red poodles. The Poodle breed is a breed that does change color, as do some other breeds. Do be aware that red poodles can fade, it is common for these breeds to lighten up as they age. Each dog is an individual and will change. This is not to say that the mature red coat will not be gorgeous in its own right. Red Poodles, and poodles in general, tend to lead lively energetic lives. Red poodles are extremely loyal companions, making them ideal pets. They love to learn tricks and will perform for audiences of enthusiastic onlookers and their red color stands out above the rest! Most designer dogs have one thing in common: they are crossed with a Poodle. There is a very good reason for that, the Poodle cross brings up the intelligence and ability to train. Crosses also get some of the benefits of the hypoallergenic qualities of the Poodle, and less shedding. If you live afar, we can safely ship your red poodle puppy to the closest major jet port. If you would like to move forward with reserving one of our red poodle puppies, or any of our puppies, then please search our available poodles , find one you are interested in and then submit your application! Photos and video also doesn't do the colour justice as the colour varies in intensity depending on the lighting. The one thing that was not mistakable was that this was a colour I had never before seen. The best part was that their temperaments were calm, very loving with eyes that would melt any cold heart. I also met the parents and the grandparents and saw photos going back 5 generations. I was hooked on the colour and knew my research had proved correct. I found my breeders. We often get asked "what does a red look like in person" Our reply is "same as a dark red headed human" Their hair is also as fine. A typical red will love lying in our laps and winding around our legs like cats for affection or attention. They are a very "soft" natured dog and respond well to "positive" training. If you are harsh with them or they sense they are disappointing you they will mentally just shut down and pout. They also want to be everywhere with you including the bathroom. You will always hear the pitter patter of a red standards feet as they will be your shadow. They love working for praise and or a laugh. Once they know a trick, they will produce it with amazing precision with eager eyes waiting, begging for your praise and you better be lavish with it if you want to see them happy. Rose pups I would describe our reds as being the most empathetic of all the colours. It is as if they can read you and decide if you are happy in which case they may be silly to get a laugh or they know that you are sad and will be calm and quiet and just rest their head on your lap waiting for you to invite them up on the couch to watch a movie with you. I do find that the reds are more "dedicated" to their owners. Valor and Ember Do not leave your red standard poodle at the window while you go to get a Tim Horton's coffee or you will be met with the back of your red standard poodle and hear sighs of "woe" until you are forgiven. Thankfully reds like all poodles, forgive quickly. I will warn anyone that is thinking about getting a red Standard and plans on walking them, that you will not get past a block without someone stopping you to see your puppy. Everyone will want to know what breed it is and you will hear people exclaim "I didn't know poodles came that colour or that size". We have almost caused accidents by people slamming on their brakes to stop to look at us. One thing is for sure is that if you go walking with your red you will make many friends Paris waiting for her owner to finish in the bathroom, after she tried unsuccessfully to get in This color Red is NOT for everyone. If you are not used to having a dog constantly at your feet or on your lap, constantly touching you, or wanting to be in the same room as you then you might find a red to be too "needy". If you have plans on doing Pet Therapy with a Red they are perfect for this as they are so gentle and caring, but please -limit- the time you offer your Red to the service, as they can become easily drained from them absorbing others emotional and sometimes physical pain. They do love obedience and showing, of course as how better for them to show everyone how smart and pretty they are! During that time, I broke both my feet and also required both of my hips to be replaced.
bernedoodle puppies tucson - As with any mixed breed, they can take on the traits of one of the parent breeds or any combination of both of them. With a Golden Retriever Mix, the goal is to get the highly-trainable, super-friendly, and sweet nature of the Golden Retriever and the best traits of the other dog in the cross. Because there can be variation in the puppies, you will want to ask the breeder about the other dog in the cross. This will give you an idea of what other traits you could be dealing with in a Golden Retriever Mix puppy. A Golden Retriever is known as the quintessential friendly dog with a happy-go-lucky personality. They get along well with children, other dogs, and other pets. They also tend to be good with strangers as they are more interested in making friends. The other dog breed in the cross could provide some other traits and variations to this, but your Golden Retriever Mix puppy should have a similar disposition to the Golden Retriever. Golden Retriever Mixes tend to be highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in larger homes with room to run and can adapt well to apartment living. As long as they get enough exercise, mental stimulation, and affection, they tend to be quite happy wherever they live. Golden Retrievers do well in most climates and are sensitive to heat, as with most dog breeds. Your Golden Retriever Mix should be about the same. A mixed breed can take on potential health concerns related to one, both, or neither of the parent breeds. Overall, a Golden Retriever Mix should be a relatively healthy dog breed. Reputable breeders will screen their stock to avoid passing on genetic conditions to puppies. You can also ask to see any relevant health clearances or test results. Golden Retrievers are famously easy to train, which makes them a great fit for owners of all experience levels. Depending on the other parent breed, there may be a chance that your Golden Retriever Mix could have an independent or stubborn streak. In this case, you will want to be prepared for puppy training and obedience classes in case you want a little help in dealing with stubbornness. Classes are a great idea either way because they help strengthen the bond you have with your puppy and are also a great opportunity to socialize your puppy. Golden Retrievers tend to have a medium-length coat that sheds moderately year-round and requires brushing a few times a week. Bathing is usually on an as-needed basis. This may be the same for your Golden Retriever Mix or their coat could require more or less grooming depending on the other parent breed. Monthly nail trimming is usually sufficient to keep them from growing too long. Weekly ear checks and careful cleaning as needed can help prevent ear infections. Golden Retrievers are high-energy dogs. Your Golden Retriever Mix will likely be the same. Even if the other parent breed is a low or moderate-energy dog, you will need to be prepared to deal with a high-energy dog. Daily walks, playtime, plus extra activity are a must for dogs with a lot of energy. Be prepared to try a lot of different activities to find your favorites. Teach your dog to play frisbee , go for a swim, go running together, try taking a few hikes, go on trips to the dog park, and more. A Golden Retriever is a medium-sized dog breed that stands inches tall and weighs pounds. Your Golden Retriever Mix could be the same or they could take after the other parent breed. Make sure you talk to the breeder about the other breed in the mix and meet the mother dog. This can give you a good idea of what size to expect as your Golden Retriever Mix puppy grows. Golden Retrievers generally live years. Unless the life span of the other parent breed varies largely from this range, you should be able to expect something similar from your Golden Retriever Mix. Featured Golden Retriever Mix Article. Life Span Did You Know? The Golden Retriever has been an AKC-recognized breed since and was commonly used as a gun dog and for retrieving small game such as waterfowl, and for companionship. The Golden Retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands. The first Lord Tweedmouth, Dudley Majoribanks, is credited with developing the breed and keeping detailed records to create the ideal gun dog for the terrain. Great discipline and a gentle spirit make the Golden Retriever a perfect retrieval breed since the goal of this task is to bring the trophy back as undamaged as possible. Golden Retrievers first appeared in dog shows in at a British dog show. They also started appearing in the United States around the same time as they were brought across the Canadian border. They gained popularity with sport hunters and in general. Their popularity really took off in the s and they are consistently one of the most popular dog breeds. If you are not the sporting type, bringing a Golden Retriever into your family as a pet is just as rewarding because they are one of the most loyal and jovial breeds out there. One of the facts about Golden Retrievers is that they are the epitome of friendly and make fantastic family dogs. Golden Retrievers are considered one of the friendliest dog breeds. They tend to be good with kids, other dogs, other pets, and even strangers. Goldens love attention and they bond closely with their families. They are affectionate with them, and also just about everyone else. Although they do tend to get along with everyone, they love being around their favorite humans the most. They will bark to alert you and can end up barking a lot if you do not train your dog to stop barking early on. Golden Retrievers are highly adaptable dogs. They thrive in homes with yards where they can run. They can also adapt to apartment living as long as they get enough daily exercise, mental stimulation, and attention. These dogs do well in just about any climate, but are sensitive to heat. As one of the most affectionate dog breeds , they are not at all happy about being left alone for long periods of time. Although super-friendly and attention-loving, Goldens can also be sensitive to their surroundings; make sure they feel included, but have a quiet place to go if things get too noisy or overwhelming. Potential health concerns to be aware of in a Golden Retriever include progressive retinal atrophy, cataracts, elbow dysplasia , and hip dysplasia. Good breeding practices make a big difference in the health of puppies. Reputable breeders screen their dogs to avoid passing preventable issues to puppies. So, make sure you ask about the health and genetic history of the parents. You can also ask about any health tests or clearances that have been done. Goldens are considered one of the best dog breeds for first-time owners. They are highly trainable dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please. These traits make them a good fit for owners of all experience levels. It also helps them excel at obedience competitions. As one of the smartest dog breeds , Golden Retrievers can get bored easily. Because they pick up things quickly, they can get bored with too much repetition in training. If your dog has mastered the command, move on to something more advanced or another activity. You can also enroll in puppy training classes for some variety in training and also some socialization. Golden Retrievers have a long double coat that will shed a little year-round and will be heavier twice a year as the seasons change. Brushing a few times a week and daily brushing during seasonal shedding along with a bath as needed is usually enough for at-home care. You will want to go to the dog groomer for a professional trim a few times a year, especially as the seasons change. Nail trims once or twice monthly keep nails from growing too long. Daily tooth brushing, along with cleanings at the vet when needed, is ideal. Golden Retrievers are one of the most active dog breeds. Daily walks plus some playtime, time to run, and other activities are usually enough to keep these dogs happy and healthy. But, they are high-energy dogs that will likely always be up for more activity if you are. Much like the Labrador , they also tend to have an extended puppyhood. They tend to start winding down a little around the age of 3 and settle into your lifestyle, but they will still be high-energy dogs that require a lot of daily activity. Goldens are known for being versatile and athletic dogs. They tend to love swimming. Once they are done growing and the vet clears them for higher-impact activities, you can try other things too. They are one of the dog breeds that make good running partners. You can also teach them how to play frisbee or play fetch. Training for dog sports is another good option. In addition to obedience, Golden Retrievers are well suited for agility, dock diving , rally, flyball, tracking, and more. Fully-grown Golden Retrievers usually stand inches tall and weigh pounds. Golden Retrievers generally live for years on average. With their intelligence, eagerness to please, and gentle disposition, Golden Retrievers are versatile working dogs. In addition to being one of the dog breeds that make the best service dogs , Goldens can be found working as emotional support dogs, certified therapy dogs, search and rescue dogs, military dogs, police dogs, animal actors, and more. Joe has always loved dogs and enjoys both the Goldens and the Shibas for their specific traits and personalities. Contact The Smokers to find out more about their puppies! Joseph Smoker includes an extended 1-year Genetic Health Guarantee on all puppies. Reviews for Joseph Smoker Rating: 5 out of 5, Average based on 5 Reviews I purchased two golden retrievers off Joe they're both great dogs. We adopted two Shiba Inus and we were very happy with the whole process. I was a very nervous puppy purchaser, and he went above and beyond with phone calls, texts, video, and documentation to make me feel comfortable. And our puppy is wonderful! She is happy and healthy and - according to our vet - a perfect example of all the breed characteristics. To be honest, We did not know what it is going to be like! Joseph made our experience so pleasant. He is very nice guy and really easy to deal with. We can see how much he loves these puppies and how he has taken care of them. We are glad to meet with him and definitely recommend getting a puppy from him : Thank you!!! Adorable puppy and David is very complimentary with the adoption process! Thank you so much! We purchased her in April .Her 1st yr birthday was Dec 6th. We couldn't be happier. She is such a good girl. David was more than helpful with us, as we had some other issues in trying to find a puppy. He is such a great person to work with and went above and beyond to help us. He is the love of our lives, he is such a sweet and lovable boy and loves to snuggle with us. He is smart and potty trained very fast. He is a beautiful color with white patches and is healthy and happy. We could not thank David and his family for giving us such a perfect puppy for our family. The puppy I purchased from my wife was prefect and she could not be more happy. Thank you. He is so sweet, smart, and healthy. When we take him out, his favorite thing to do is meet new people and get pets! He gets along great with our kids, our other dog, and our cat. David was so helpful when we came to pick out a puppy. He allowed us to play with the puppies for as long as we needed to. They were all healthy, happy and energetic. He also had the mom and dad right there for us to spend time with. They were so sweet, happy, and well-trained! We wanted to take them with us too: David was knowledgeable and obviously cares about his dogs very much. This was the first time we bought instead of rescue and I was so pleasantly surprised with the entire experience! Thank you, David! We were lost. I started looking for a doodle as I have allergies. Not one pup would he agree to and then I saw Bandit, now Rocco. He was so adorable and had a white goatee like my husband! I called David immediately before he changed his mind and sent my down payment by PayPal. I picked up Rocco about 10 days later. A 3 hour drive well worth every mile. Rocco is the best puppy ever! Very smart. Listens well. No destruction in the house. He is huggable and loves us as much as we love him. He learned standard commands quickly as well as house training. He is 4 months old and weighs about 27 lbs. I would highly recommend David at Blissfulpaws for a puppy and actually a friend went and purchased a puppy today who is a half sister to Rocco! He was and remains a well socialized pup and is growing up fast. Loves hiking , swimming and people!! He is in training to be a therapy dog for elderly folks in a convalescent home. He has been to our vet 3 times , has a clean bill of health thus far and is just a joy to have. He is smart , chill and easily trained. He is now 17 weeks old , house broken and knows a lot of commands. We will certainly be our sing another from you when Enzo is full grown - Patty Farina , October 03, We purchased our golden in July Gina and we named her hope! Working with David was very easy and we can not be more grateful, highly recommend! Our family is so happy she brings us so much joy! He made our experience adopting Molly F1 standard goldendoodle so pleasant. We traveled to get our new girl. When we arrived he greeted us, answered all of our questions and gave us very helpful advice. I keep in touch with him through email from time to time. We send pictures of our beautiful girl. We tell him how very blessed we are that we chose her. He always responds. She's beautiful, smart, and so well behaved. She will soon be 2 years old. He named her "Wonderful". We named her "Molly". Thank you David for the greatest gift ever!! He brought out Winston Nate and I was instantly in love. Winston is now a happy 6 month old 60lb big guy who thinks he needs to be carried everywhere. He walks great on a leash and is very calm. He is the perfect fit to my little family. I plan to adopt with David and blissful paws again in the future. Thanks so much for bringing me this sweet little guy!! He was very informative, accommodating with our schedule seeing as we drove about 3 hours from NJ , and very kind. We picked up Mae a week ago, and decided to keep the name given to her. She is a sweet, goofy pup who catches on quickly to training. I highly recommend! She is wonderful!! I'm so pleased with her. She gets along great with the other dogs, and she's doing great with training. When I took her to the vet for her first visit, my vet said she was a great dog in excellent health. I would highly recommend Mr. Beiler's puppies. Plus the whole process of purchasing a dog from him is very easy. He was very responsive to emails and very accommodating with the pickup date. I would definitely purchase from him again. We had been looking for golden puppy for a few days, when we found Greenfieldpuppies. After looking at a bunch of puppies we decided to choose one from Blissful Paws. After many emails with David we picked out one, which was hard, to many cute puppies. David was very helpful, understanding and communicated very well. He understood the issue I had, early I was scammed trying to get a golden. I was very leary about making a deposit on another dog I hadn't yet seen. David helped ease that and made an arrangement with me. I came and saw the puppy, left a deposit and explained I couldn't pick her up until Apr 25th. David was again, helpful and understanding. He made the whole process flow smoothly. Thanks for bringing Rebecca, now Willow into our lives. Previously, I got scammed trying to buy a Golden Puppy and it made me more than nervous to try and buy another over the internet. But they were more than willing to comfort my decisions any way they could. They were so helpful and genuine and overall an amazing experience! Their shipper lists everything throughout the process and even gives you shipping details so you can track your puppy the whole time! Just overall amazing people and we got our dream puppy! He is very socialized and gets along with our lab puppy he is such a sweet puppy who is healthy and you can tell he was well cared for previously. Koby quickly became a lovely addition to our family. He is a healthy, well-behaved dog. Koby is wonderful with children and other dogs. David made the adoption process easy. He was always very responsive to any questions that we had. We recommend David and Blissful Paws to other families who are thinking about adopting a puppy. Thank you again. After speaking with several different sellers and just not finding what I was looking for, I stumbled across David at Blissful Paws. Being in a different state I was worried it would make the process difficult, but I was able to video call and meet the puppies to choose my perfect little Beau. David helped me to find a reliable individual to deliver the puppy all the way from PA to my home and kept me updated through the whole process. Beau is exactly what I was looking for and such a sweet boy! We had the best experience doing this via phone email and text because we live in California! David was kind and helpful to the point of Face Timing us so we could see our puppy! His attention to detail to have our pup flown under the best conditions was awesome and let our hearts rest that he had the puppies best interest at hand! Thank you David and God Bless you!! bernedoodle puppies tucson - Email: massespudgypugs gmail. Their pups are bred to carefully chosen AKC champion-line stud dogs. These breeders work hard to better the breed standard by working closely with other reputable breeders. They strive to raise Pugs with great temperament, confirmation, and health. Pups are sold to approved homes only and come with a two-year guarantee on any hereditary conditions. Once pups are eight weeks old they can be sent home to their new families. They will have all current vaccinations and deworming, and will have been socialized and litter box trained as well. They love their dogs and show commitment to the betterment of the breed in everything they do. But how can you spot reputable breeders when you start searching for a Pug puppy? Here are some tips to help you out. A good breeder will… 1. Issue a health guarantee Make sure that your breeder of choice offers a health guarantee. A reputable Pug breeder will write up a binding health guarantee for all of their puppies. The guarantee protects you against any genetic defects or diseases. It shows that the breeder is confident that their puppies are bred according to best practices. This means if you can no longer look after your pup for some reason, you will be expected to return the puppy to the breeder rather than taking them to a shelter. Provide standard health clearances Your breeder should have full health clearances for both parent Pugs. Good breeders often provide some early health-check clearances for their pups too, although some health clearances simply cannot be carried on such young pups. Issue a written bill of sale Reputable breeders offer written bills of sale to all of their new Pug parents. This bill of sale should be signed and will outline all the roles and responsibilities to be taken on by the buyer and seller as part of the transaction. Vaccinate their puppies All puppies should be up to date on their vaccinations before being homed with new families. Your breeder of choice should be able to provide evidence of these vaccinations. Reputable breeders welcome prospective parents into their homes to see the puppies. Follow age guidelines Puppies should never leave the litter before 8 weeks of age. Any breeder offering pups for adoption before this time is not following best practices. In fact, this could be quite damaging for the puppy developmentally. A reputable breeder will keep their pups at home until eight to twelve weeks so that they can be properly socialized and spend that crucial time with their mother and litter-mates. Answer your questions Last, but not least, a reputable breeder will be knowledgeable. In most cases, they will also want to ask you plenty of questions to ensure that their precious pups are going to good homes. We have a strict selection process that takes a variety of factors into account. That way we can ensure that only the best breeders end up on our lists. This way we know that our chosen breeders offer genetically sound and healthy puppies. Health testing shows a commitment to the health and wellbeing of each Pug. Contact information Any breeder that does not offer up their contact information is a big red flag. A reputable breeder will make it easy for you to get in contact with them by providing telephone numbers, email addresses, and they will usually have a well-established website as well. It shows a commitment to breeding best practices. Event participation Breeders who also compete in doggie events are often some of the best. Because these people tend to be dog lovers par excellence. They live and breathe for their Pugs and are proud to show them off in public. They are also more likely to have a high level of breed knowledge — an excellent sign for a breeder. Breed club membership There are lots of breed clubs out there that breeders can register with. These clubs have rules, regulations, and membership fees. If your breeder is registered with the Pug Dog Club of America, this is a great sign showing commitment to the Pug breed. Recognition awards Lastly, we look out for awards! Institutions like the AKC recognize the efforts and achievements of top breeders. The very best will be awarded the AKC recognition of merit award. During this time we recommend getting everything ready before your new arrival rattles through the front door. Your puppy will need: a crate for sleeping and training during the early days quality puppy-grade food a leash and harness plenty of toys You may also wish to purchase a puppy gate if there are areas of your home that you want to keep your Pug away from. This is all about making your home as safe as possible for your new arrival. Make sure anything that could potentially cause harm to your pup is removed. Clear your schedule Having a Pug puppy is a bit like having a human baby. So make sure to clear your schedule and get all of those errands done ahead of time! Once they arrive… 4. Avoid crowds Hold your excitement. That means no crowds. Try to keep the home environment as stress-free as possible so that your puppy can settle in and start to feel part of the family. Crate training is the first step. Lay down a regular routine from the get to and your Pug will be good as gold in no time. Introducing our beautiful pugs available for adoption.
