She became smart to my tricks to get her into the crate at night, so I leave her out now. She really doesnt get along with other animals. I was told that when I got her, so Ive left my four cats in bedrooms since she arrived. Thats a huge reason why Id like to find her a forever home. Social isolation is a different type of discipline and we will go into that ahead. Never take away a toy - Dogs have very few possessions in comparison to us humans. They have their beds, their food and water bowls and their toys. Beds are for comfort, food and water of course is for survival and toys are a dog's most prized possessions as they can become very attached to them. Can you make a Pug listen by taking away a favorite toy? This does not work because one of two things will happen: 1 If the Pug cares about what just happened, it moves the dog into a mindset of wanting to have his toy back, when this time could be better spent actually teaching the Pug what he did wrong and what he should be doing instead or 2 Some Pugs will take this in stride because there are other toys to play with and if you take away all of his toys, he may very well think you are just playing some sort of odd game. Again, there are better ways to discipline your Pug that actually work well. Never rub a Pug's nose in his feces or urine - Far too many people think that this works when a dog has a bathroom accident and this may be due to copying what they saw their parents or grandparents doing in the past. Before the wonderful invention of computers and the transition of having them everywhere yeah, there was a time like that! Sure, some dog owners would purchase training books, however the majority of them just did what they saw others do due to a lack of knowledge regarding proper training methods. This is an old-fashioned punishment that can scare the heck out of a dog or confused him and it does not work. While it may make perfect sense to you that your Pug should only pee or poo in a designated outdoor area, your puppy or dog will not know the difference between that spot of grass and the carpeting in your living room unless he is clearly taught. And while it may seem logical to you that your Pug should not chew on the leg of the kitchen table, he has no idea why that is wrong, but chewing on a toy is okay, unless it is clearly taught to him. The reason why all of the above listed punishments do not work, is because while they may startle a dog, or scare him or even make him know that he misbehaved, they do not show him what he should do instead. If he has access to laundry piles thrown on the floor, how will he know that those are not 'toys' left out for him? Unfortunately after the scans were taken, a spot was found on his liver which gave him a terminal diagnosis 2 months without chemo, 6 months with chemo. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Only take your senior on shorter runs, and watch out for any signs of tiredness, and overheating. Golden Retrievers are prone to many health issues, including hip and elbow dysplasia. Just as humans build up their stamina with daily exercise, so do our dogs. Start off slow by adding small stretches of running into your daily walks, then gradually increase the amount of running. This will allow your Golden to build up his endurance. Ensure that your Golden can walk properly while on a leash. The last thing you want is to run with a leash attached to your Golden Retriever that is pulling you in all directions. Or, biting and jumping up at the leash. Walking a Golden Retriever that is untrained on a leash is frustrating, but, running at faster speeds can be dangerous. Weather Extreme temperatures are not only uncomfortable for your Golden Retriever, but they can be very dangerous as well. Golden Retrievers do prefer cooler temperatures and enjoy running in the snow. But, because of their long fur, they tend to get snowballs stuck on their legs and between their paws, which is very uncomfortable for them. Sidewalks in the winter are also covered with chemical ice melts that can burn their paw pads, and cause them to lift their paws. Boots or paw wax are important to keep their paws safe. Running during hot temperatures should be avoided, as Golden Retrievers quickly overheat. Longer runs on these types of surfaces are not advisable, as they can be uncomfortable and cause pain for your Golden Retriever. Golden Retrievers can reach speeds up to 30 to 35 miles per hour, which is faster than a human being. That is of course taking into consideration their age, health, and fitness level. Anyone who has played a game of fetch, or has witnessed their Golden do the zoomies, knows just how fast these dogs can be. While sprinting at top speeds can be accomplished, Golden Retrievers are much better at running slowly for longer periods. Age, health, the weather and physical stamina all play a role in how far your Golden Retriever can run with you. Keep in mind that running long distances should only be reserved for healthy adult Golden Retrievers. Young puppies need to finish growing before they partake in a high-impact exercise like running.
