What is an "original" Australian Labradoodle? The Australian Labradoodle is different from all other labradoodles. Dogs from this cross typically were bred to each other over future generations, whereby the Australian dogs are also know as "Multi-generational" Labradoodles. The resulting labradoodles subsequently have been bred to each other, continuing the multi-generational tradition. Even when the other types of Labradoodles are bred on for generations, the result is not an Australian Labradoodle, as the attributes of the infused breeds were not included in their ancestry. The Australian Labradoodle Club of America was founded exclusively to foster and protect the original Australian Labradoodles that have come directly from Tegan Park and Rutland Manor breeding stock, or their offspring. Our mission is to maintain and improve the quality and soundness of the Australian Labradoodles, and to carefully monitor the further development of the breed. All member breeders are carefully screened to help ensure the future of the Australian Labradoodle. Our member breeders must breed to the highest standards. We have Breeder Mentors to assist member breeders and to help new breeders get off to a good start. If someone in your family has allergies, a multi-generation Australian Labradoodle from Red Desert Doodles should be your first choice. Each of our breeding dogs is fully health tested before they are eligible for breeding. Our puppies all come with a two year health guarantee. Where in the world are our Red Desert Doodles Families? With keeping a small number of dogs we have time to give plenty of love and individual attention to them and the puppies when we have them. Our dogs are not kept in kennels, they live with us as part of our family, with room to roam outside on our one acre property and a warm spot inside to sleep. All puppies are raised inside our home in a clean and healthy environment. All whelpings are supervised by us and assisted as needed to ensure the best start and to protect the health of the mother and her puppies. All puppies are well socialized with small children, cats and our other dogs. Temperament is very important to us, our breeding dogs have wonderful temperaments that they pass on to their puppies. Puppies are temperament tested so that we can help you to find the perfect fit for your family and your needs. We actively show our dogs on the local, national and international level thereby striving to breed dogs of quality bloodlines and structure that adhere to the German SV standard for the German Shepherd dog. We make every effort to continue to learn and to improve our bloodlines by importing dogs of superior quality with top German VA bloodlines to bring you the highest and best quality puppy for you and your family to enjoy. Riverside is over an hour drive from me in the valley, but; the puppies that come from the breeder are worth the drive and more! My all black German Shepard "Sirius" is an absolute dream! The breeder and his family truly care for the dogs and their upbringing. Arsalaan constantly checks in to see how me and Sirius are doing and is there to answer any questions you may have. Whether it's your first dog or not give him a call! He'll walk you through the steps and be there with you for guidance. Gavin U. Arsalaan and his family are very kind, caring breeders! When I first reached out to him, he was very quick with a response and easy to communicate with. He truly takes great pride in his pups and is very helpful to answer any questions that may arise. I brought Bear home with me on Dec 16 and he was nice, clean, and healthy upon pick up. Arsalaan provided Bear's list of shots as well as his pedigree and some other additional documents. You will not be disappointed working with him, highly recommend him and his family to help you bring home your newest family member! Mitchell K. Very responsible breeder, I came from Arizona and couldn't be happier. Very helpful before and after receiving my puppy. I highly recommended. Jimmy M. I call Arsalaan whenever I have questions and he is always very helpful with training tips and advice. I get a lot compliments on her looks. Elvia B. I am so grateful for all of the help I got from Arsalaan, and we also appreciate him following up on our puppy "Rexie". He's given us great advice even before we decided to get Rexie. Although he's up north about a 90 minute drive from us, it was definitely worth it. He kept our puppy even after her 8 weeks we couldn't bring her home because it was a Christmas gift. When I took Rexie to her first vet visit the vet said " this breeder definitely knows what he's doing ". Rexie came with up to date vaccinations and AKC forms paid for just have to finish writing them up. Our new family member is a happy and healthy puppy! Plus she sleeps through the night quietly from day one. Amazing Thank you Arsalaan. Our home is located in Southern California on 3 acres nestled in the hills just north of the Temecula Wine Country. Our family has spent more than 20 years with the German Shepherd breed and the last decade showing and breeding. Our AKC registered German Shepherds and German Shepherd puppies are from German import, show line working dogs, which possess the fundamental intelligence, beauty and grace we all know and love. The focus of So Cal German Shepherds is to produce quality puppies from multiple generations of healthy parents that have the necessary certifications for breeding. Producing healthy, beautiful and intelligent German Shepherd puppies, with strong nerves and courageous temperaments. The result of this breeding is a puppy which is wonderful with the children, confident and stable when in public, and ready to protect its family when at home. However, they remain as participating members of our family and enjoy trail riding with the horses, taking trips to the beach, going camping and lounging in the living room. From working with the live stock to standing out in the show ring, our German Shepherds are truly a versatile breed. Performance shows what the dog IS. If you wanted to ship your puppy, you would need to first come to our kennels and then ship the puppy out yourself. Or you can use a ground transportation company. By placing a deposit on a litter not yet born, please keep this in mind and be willing to move your deposit onto another litter at a later date. This allows us to offer puppies to pet homes at a more affordable price. You will still get AKC papers except they will say limited. If you bred a dog that was registered limited, then you would not be able to register the offspring. This limit however, can be lifted by the breeder. That said, while it can be done, I strongly urge anyone who lives in an apartment to think carefully about how much time and work it can be to keep a large, working dog in an apartment. I will not sell a puppy to anyone who lives in an apartment and leaves the dog home alone all day. At least one person needs to be home during the day. The dog needs to be taken outside to play at least once a day and taken for potty breaks many times EVERY day. Also, please check with your apartments rules on German Shepherds; some complexes do not allow them. New strains of the Parvo Virus are abundant and it is my job to keep puppies safe. I use a high titer Parvo Vaccine at 4 weeks but this may not protect all puppies. So please understand as much as you would like to visit with your puppies as they grow I can no longer allow this until they are 7 weeks. I will send out emails with pictures or videos weekly. No outside dogs are allowed at anytime. Thank you for understanding how important it is for me to keep the puppies safe. If you do visit other breeders, please do so on a different day that you visit. Von Ward Kennels will take back any puppy at any time in their lives if their owners can no longer care for them. Please never take a Von Wards dog to a shelter if you can no longer keep them. While most of our dogs are larger than the standard, we do have a couple of breeding females that are within standard.

On the softer side, the dog may be used as a service dog for war veterans or soldiers who are suffering from PTSD. Scenting or Tracking Games. The German Shepherd parent dog side of the German Shepherd Chow mix was tracking dogs that loved to hunt things. Some games include finding the treat, hide and seek, and find the toy. Both the Doberman and the German Shepherd are renowned guarding dogs and, and its offspring are more likely to display aggressive behavior towards suspicions and threats. The dog should learn how to safely interact with different people and animals, especially with children. Here are some training methods that you could apply to the dog: Socialization. The Doberman German Shepherd mix is a dog with a bold disposition. The dog needs to be exposed with children and other animals and dogs as a puppy to help expand its sense of protectiveness and guarding instincts towards others. The dog will eventually learn new social skills and become more mature to regulate its aggressive tendency. Positive Reinforcement. Rewarding your dog while teaching it commands can come a long way to its relationship with you. You give your dog a reward such as a treat or a toy whenever it successfully responds to your command but gives it nothing until it learns how to react correctly to your call. Puppy Training. The most important part of training the dog as a puppy is giving it your time and company. This should teach your dog the value of your bond with it and will soon acknowledge you as its alpha. Let it play with toys that you give so that it learns that being with you is a rewarding experience. Knowing how to address this reaction of the dog on its guarding instincts is vital before it grows older. But the Doberman German Shepherd mix is also a loyal and affectionate dog once it grows up. It may even feel emotional when its owner deprives the dog of reciprocation or companionship. They make excellent guard dogs and make intruders think twice before barging into your house. The dog needs a backyard space to deplete its energy levels throughout the day. It is not an ideal dog for people living in an apartment since the dog may always feel insecure and wary of strangers that walk the hallways every day. It may even act more aggressively to different people who you interact with and affect your social life as well. If your family lives in colder states and have fewer opportunities to bring out the dog, then it is not a suitable dog for you. This guy is so tall he can lick the counters without having to get up on his hind legs and can look over a 6-foot fence easily. They can also be stubborn at times, so these dogs are not ideal for novice owners. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. That said, they are exceedingly loyal and highly intelligent and make one of the most loyal family protectors around. They are also versatile and make a great exercise companion too, giving you a dog that can do it all! They can be a challenge for first-time dog owners, though, as they are strong-willed and need a strong, confident leader in training. Continue learning from this Doberman Shepherd care guide to know what type of diet, exercise and attention they need to grow into happy and healthy dogs. They are stubborn and strong-willed at times but make up for this with their love and affection toward their owners. With the right training and socialization, their more negative traits can be largely mitigated. They become extremely bonded to their human family, so while they are bold and brave on the outside, they are actually highly sensitive and suffer from separation anxiety when left alone. If you are away from home frequently, this is unfortunately not the breed for you. These dogs are just as energetic and athletic as their parent breeds, if not more so, and they can be a challenge to properly exercise. It is essential to give these dogs the right amount of exercise, though, as without it, they can swiftly become bored, destructive, and even aggressive. Proper training is arguably even more important, and these dogs need a strong, confidant leader; otherwise, they will take the position themselves! They are generally gentle and affectionate with kids but can easily knock them over and hurt them mistakenly while playing. For families with older kids, though, they are wonderful family dogs, as they are loyal as they come and formidable protectors. Doberman Shepherds generally get along great with other dogs and are usually fine with cats too. Dry food is great, so long as it is free from filler ingredients and has animal protein in the top three ingredients — ideally, the first-listed one. They should not be free-fed because they are notoriously poor at self-regulating and can quickly get obese. Also, as with any dog, make sure they have access to fresh, clean water at all times. That said, they do have a stubborn streak that can be a challenge for novice owners. Early socialization is essential with Doberman Shepherds and will make training far easier because they will be far less distracted by other dogs and humans when you take them out for walks. While these dogs are intimidating and powerful animals, they are fairly sensitive and do not respond well to harsh training methods, and this may even cause aggressive behavior. Gentle, reward-based methods are best and will build a wonderful relationship of trust and bonding with your pooch. Other than that, you may need to trim their nails occasionally to prevent injuries, and keep their teeth brushed and clean to avoid dental disease. That said, they may still be susceptible to the genetic issues of their parent breeds and can be prone to issues that affect most other dog breeds too. These dogs love to eat and are not good at self-regulating their food intake. This can swiftly lead to obesity if they are overfed, but their daily meals should also be split into two to three smaller meals to prevent them from eating too fast. Large dogs that eat their food too quickly are prone to gastric torsion, a condition resulting from swallowing too much air with food. This condition is unfortunately fatal in most cases. Minor Conditions.
Experienced Breeders Since .Good day to all. Yes, we have puppies. I believe our pups and Golden Retrievers are exceptional. We are not a puppy mill or a kennel. Our male stud Golden Retriever Thor is 90 pounds, dark red and tall. They are all fed with Premium food, vet checked, and socialized with all our dogs and with us, Martin, Tom and Cody. We have great reviews from our forever Golden retriever families. I have been breeding and owned Golden Retrievers for over 33 years since Picture in pics show Martin bathing Axle in .This is a passion of mine and with an empathic personality means I really care about them all. We care a lot where our pups go and we take great care of them beginning with birth until their new forever finally picks them up. That is always an exciting moment for us when mom, dad and the children see their pup for the first time in person. If you are a family or person who wants a new forever puppy addition in your home, check out our Facebook page and inquire here on this site about availability with our message option. Our pups come with AKC paperwork, first set of shots, crate training and some premium food to go home with. We expect a backyard and a loving forever family. My name is Martin and let me know how I can help you. My phone number is .Please access the following internet link.We would hate to lose this valuable resource! Thank you all from Martin, Tom and Cody. More dark red Golden Retrievers. We are taking deposits, and the pricing has been reduced. Please feel free to message us if you have any questions or concerns. As you can see in our Facebook pictures, Our Goldens are spoiled. Be responsible! We specialize in breeding Mini Goldendoodles as well as a few other breeds. We also have partnered up with several other high quality breeders that raise mini goldendoodle pups that meet our strict genetic criteria and testing. So we usually have a good selection of very high quality puppies. View Our Available Puppies! Not all mini Goldendoodles are equal, there are a few different versions to choose from each having a little different genetic background based on the pups parents. We will explain all the differences in Mini Goldendoodle puppies and how they are bred below. We raise all versions of the mini goldendoodle breed. F1 Mini Goldendoodle Pups. A F1 puppy is also known as a First Generation puppy. The puppies mother is a Golden Retriever and the pups dad is a Mini Poodle. This version of mini goldendoodle usually has soft wavy or curly puppy fur. They will shed until they lose their puppy fur, after shedding they will shed a lot less, but will shed. This version is partially hypoallergenic and usually requires low maintenance. F1 mini goldendoodles usually need to be groomed every 6 months along with daily brushing to keep their curly hair from matting and getting tangled. The dogs usually grow up having great temperaments similar to golden retrievers. They usually get about inches high at the shoulder and range in weight from pounds. F1b Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1b is known as a second-generation mini goldendoodle with the pups mother being already an F1 Goldendoodle and the pups dad being a mini poodle also. So the difference between F1 and F1b is that the mom is not a golden retriever but an actual F1 Goldendoodle. They also have very soft curly hair but with almost no shedding. This F1b version is semi-hypoallergenic and a better choice for anyone who has pet allergies. The F1b also should be brushed on a daily basis but will need to be groomed more frequently then a F1. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is recommended to keep their coat in perfect condition. F1b Mini goldendoodles get around 18 to 20 inches tall at the shoulders and range between pounds in weight. F1bb Mini Goldendoodle Pups. An F1bb goldendoodle is also known as a third-generation mini goldendoodle. This mini goldendoodle version has a coat more similar to a poodle than of a golden retriever. This is because the pup is more of a poodle than a retriever. Making it the very best version for anyone with pet allergies. A 6 to 8 week grooming schedule is required to help prevent knots or matting. This version is super intelligent and loving, and usually seems to have more energy than the other versions of Mini goldendoodles. This version is usually smaller in size, weighing around pounds and only getting inches tall at the shoulders. The smaller size makes them a great size for smaller homes and apartments. So if you live near Pahrump Nevada and are looking for a healthy and beautiful Mini Goldendoodle puppy then checkout our available pups now by Clicking Here. They are almost square in appearance, with a strong body and sturdy legs. The maximum height for a male is 24 inches, which puts them in the medium-size dog category, but their sturdy build can make them seem much larger. Weights range from 85 pounds for a large male to 55 pounds for a smaller female. Field line bred dogs are often taller and somewhat thinner in build. Labrador retrievers are easily recognized by their broad head, drop ears and large, expressive eyes. Two trademarks of the Lab are the thick but fairly short double coat, which is very water repellent, and the well known "otter tail. The feet are described as "webbed," with longer skin between the toes to aid in swimming. The Labrador retriever is a moderately fast maturing breed, reaching adult height from six to 12 months, but possibly still filling out up to 2 years of age. Many Labs reach 12 to 14 years of age. Personality: In general, Labrador retrievers are excellent family dogs, as long as you keep in mind their need for exercise and training. These are dogs bred to work and work hard and they love to have jobs to do, particularly retrieving. Labs are usually good with other dogs, other pets, and children as long as training has toned down their natural exuberance. They are strong dogs and need some obedience training at an early age or they can be seen dragging their owners down the street at will. Owing to their energetic nature, Labradors who are left alone or not well exercised can become destructive — chewing, digging and barking to excess. The field line dogs are especially high-energy dogs, while some of the show line dogs become perfect couch potatoes at an early age. Chewing can be a problem because the strong retrieve urge gives them an oral fixation. Sturdy chew toys, exercise and training all help with this. Living With: Obviously, Labradors have a number of endearing traits or they would not be so popular. They are intelligent and fairly easy to train, partly from their desire to work with people. They are "easy keepers" and can become overweight if they are not exercised and food portions adjusted as needed. Labs are excellent family dogs because they do want to be with people and many do not do well as kennel dogs. Labradors do tend to be protective of their families and homes but are usually happy to greet company, too. With the strong retrieving instinct, they can develop into destructive chewers if not given appropriate toys and guidance. Labs may tend to "mouth" people and the solution is often simply to give them a toy to carry around, so their mouths are already full! These are very strong dogs and early training is necessary to have a dog that walks nicely on lead. The wonderful double coat that keeps the Labrador warm while retrieving in icy water also gives this breed top billing as shedders. Normally, their coats do fine with a quick weekly grooming, but at shedding time daily grooming is needed. The amount of exercise they need varies with the different lines: field line dogs can run all day, whereas show line dogs only need moderate exercise. History: Early in the s, some of the multipurpose dogs used in North America mostly Canada by hunters were shipped back to England. Many of these "water dogs" were of the Newfoundland type, but the smaller ones were often designated "St John's" dogs. In England, the breed was developed and refined probably with some flat-coated retriever input into the breed we recognize today. As is evidenced by their name, Labrador retrievers were bred and selected for their outstanding retrieving abilities, particularly in water. They have worked as partners with duck hunters in all kinds of weather and conditions. Their intelligence and desire to work as a partner with man has led to many other jobs, and to their current status as popular pets. Today, Labradors excel as service and guide dogs, family pets, scenting dogs for the military, customs and arson task force dogs, search and rescue dogs as well as hunting companions and performance dogs. The breed's good nature has propelled it to the number one ranking in popularity in America, a position it intends to keep. Despite their fame as indoor pets, they are even more at home outdoors. It should always be remembered that Labradors are water retrievers at heart and from early on, puppies show a strong desire to carry things around with them and a strong attraction to water, even puddles! Related Pet Care Articles. As such, they are recognized experts in facts and figures for many breeds of dogs. According to their data, most labrador litters contain between five and ten puppies, with the average being seven. In comparison to all dog breeds, Labradors are right in the middle. The average size of a litter of puppies, in general, is five or six dogs. The largest known litter of labradors ever recorded was 14 puppies , born to a black labrador in the United Kingdom in .Labradors are huge fans of babies as they age. Active families love a Lab! In short, probably not. Your vet can confirm pregnancy, give an estimate of how far along the pregnancy is, and give you an approximate due date. Humans and canines alike know the excitement of a first pregnancy. When it comes to labradors, this can also impact the size of the litter. Biological and evolutionary factors come into play and make first litters smaller. Expect one or two additional puppies from her first two. After the fourth pregnancy, the litter size tends to taper off. In addition to whether or not it is her first litter, the age of the mother labrador also affects the size of the litter. Generally speaking, the older the mother, the smaller the litter size. This fact is a little confusing, though, when you also consider that first litters are smaller. It means that a 3-year-old labrador will have larger litters than a 5- or 6-year-old labrador. So, if two female labradors have their third litter at ages four and six, the four-year-old labrador is likely to have the larger litter of the two. How Old is Dad? Believe it or not, the age of the father of the puppies can also impact the size of the litter. This is because of the viability of his sperm. When a female dog is in heat, her ovaries release several eggs that are ready for fertilization. However, if the male dog is older, his sperm tends to be less vigorous, meaning fewer will reach the eggs, and therefore fewer eggs will be fertilized, resulting in smaller litter size. A Labrador lounges on his dog bed Natural versus Artificial Insemination How did the mother dog become pregnant? Many labrador breeders and breeders for other types of dogs, as well prefer artificial insemination. It also takes the social interactions of the two dogs out of the equation. Some dog handlers and breeders hesitate to put their mama dogs in such a sensitive and potentially unpredictable situation. The bad news is that, while artificial insemination seems to be the more controlled and safe option, it usually yields fewer puppies. Of course, the breed of the dog is a significant factor in genetics. Does the Size of the Mom Matter? Not really. If you have a mom who is part labrador herself or is a purebred labrador but has puppies with another breed, some of these numbers and averages change. If your pregnant pooch is only part labrador, the size of her litter will also depend on what other breeds she contains. The general rule of thumb is that the larger the breed, the larger the litter. If your lab is a part German shepherd , expect a somewhat bigger litter. The breed of the father matters less, though. The breed of the father has more to do with the size of each individual puppy. Fun fact: the largest known litter of puppies ever recorded is a whopping .Unsurprisingly, the 15 male and nine female puppies were born to a Neopolitan Mastiff in , one of the most giant breeds around. Do Labs like water? Healthy dogs tend to produce larger litters. My wife and I love playing with our active miniature Labradoodle Max. We want all Oodle puppies to be healthy and happy, have lots of fun and be part of the family. Load More. How do you make yourself different, special? Max did that from the beginning! Lola, my yellow Labrador retriever, was pregnant, and since it was my first and was my only litter, I was so totally paranoid with anything which could go wrong. As paranoid as I was when I was pregnant with my girls! I was not supposed to welcome that litter alone. One of my good friends, Liz, had told me that she was going to be there to help…. But Liz died suddenly, and left me alone to deal with my pups! Anyway, I knew the pups were coming after Lola started nesting one night, and drove me totally berserk. Hey girl, I had got you that beautiful whelping box. Could you stop roaming around like a lunatic? In the morning, my daughter and I took her to the vet, and after an ultra sound, we learned that we were going to welcome into this world five puppies. So, we were ready. Max was not. When the first four were born within 3 hours, Max decided that he wanted to have a different birthday than his siblings. He made us wait over 3 hours after Sophie before deciding to grant us with his presence! He was lucky we were still up kind of…. I remember napping with my daughters on the floor waiting for the 5th wonder to be born. Max was the runt of the litter. Yes, yes, he was small but as perfect as the others. Like a Mom, I counted everything I could count on my five wonders. She was so blonde, always have been and Zoe is the one who still has so many blonde moments! Gosh she went straight to the teats and could not let go…. But I always thought she would have been amazing. I fell in love with Honor without ever meeting him but what was not to love about this boy? Honor is black, and has the best sense of humor ever. You see, this is exactly why I love labs so much. They are the only dogs who have a sense of humor! I love all dogs, mutts or no mutts, but labs…. .There is something special about them, and I will spend the remaining of my life surrounded by them. From the beginning, Max loved classical music. When I was letting them out of the whelping box, Max was always the one to go to take a nap by the radio tuned to the classical music channel. I tried to make him appreciate opera, but I am not sure he will ever be a fan of it. From his birth, Max — and his siblings — were raised with Vivaldi, Chopin, Brahms and the others…. .Funny thing, the three boys were black like their Dad, and the two girls are yellow like their Mom. When they started growing up, and gosh it went so fast. One day you could have the five of them of your lap, the next month, you needed the help of the couch to contain them! Max has always been the one who observes. When he knew it was time to go back to the playpen, every single time, he was jumping on the couch and faking sleep. Faking sleep? Yes, Max could not fool me, I mean, he did a few times. But after the others were tucked for the night, I was turning to him, and I can tell you that so many times, he was lightly opening an eye to see if he were going to be able to spend the night on the comfy couch or going back with his siblings! Life was not always perfect. There was the day where it was obvious that Max was not feeling well. It was a Saturday night of course when every vet was closed. Jessica and I took him to the closest emergency. A young vet was there. Do you really want to spend so much money on him? As a matter of fact, I had called another emergency, and took Max away from her care to run to the other facility. In reality, Max did not have any pneumonia, and he did not need any oxygen either as the previous vet had told us. Max had a tummy ache, and after spending the night at the emergency and being monitored, we were able to pick him up the next morning. Thank God, because Lola was so upset not having her fifth kid that I thought she was going to destroy the house! My brain was not programmed that way and I just could not let them go and never hear ever again from them. I could not risk them to be abused, sick, sad, and I just could not break the bond that existed between them. So, I got a pack. They are all spayed, neutered, etc…. Max, being the smallest one, has always been a bit bullied by his sister Sophie. From the beginning, when they were playing in the yard, Sophie loved to jump on Max and grab him by his neck. Sophie loved it, Max did not. Max decided he did not want to go out anymore if Sophie was around, which caused a few accidents in the house. I had to go with him, and stay next to him. He is the dog who pees on command! From the beginning, he loves the dust, not the mud. Hear me clear, here! Dust is his best friend. Mud is yuck! The first two or three years of their lives, Max was having a tantrum each time I was leaving the house. Sophie is such a good helper! They are now five years old, can you imagine? And there is one thing, I cannot imagine: Max getting old. You see, he has always been the baby, and will stay the baby forever. Max getting white hair? Max was the easiest one to train. The two of us, we are really good with hand signs. Max has a flaw, I know, I know, he believes he is the perfect little lab 60 lbs. But others beware! I am looking at my Max right now. And this is still true, but looking at the eyes of my boy, I melt. Baby you are, baby you will be for the rest of your life!
They were very spoiled, as they were the dogs of emperors. They were even guarded by soldiers! Some believe they are related to the Tibetan Mastiff ancestor of the Mastidoodle , but this has not been confirmed. During the s and early s, China began trading with European countries, and therefore Pugs were introduced to Europeans. They instantly became a big hit. They were common in royal households. William, Prince of Orange, even claims his beloved Pug saved his life by barking to signal the approach of the Spaniards. Pugs peaked in Europe during the Victorian era. After the Civil War, they were introduced to America. This breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in .Additionally, the Pug Dog Club of American was founded in .Poodle Breed History: While commonly associated with the French, the Poodle actually originated as a duck hunter in Germany over years ago. Eventually, Poodles made their way from the lake to the life of luxury as they were the breed of choice by French nobles, and eventually royalty across all of Europe. To this day, the Poodle is still the national dog of France. The Toy Poodle started in the United States in the early 20th century to be a city-dwelling companion dog. However, in the United States between the s and the s, there was a significant increase in breeding Poodles with other dogs. Pugapoos are not large dogs. On average, males are between inches in height and females are between inches in height. Males weigh between pounds and females weigh slightly less, between pounds. If the coat is more similar to the Pug, it will be lower maintenance and require less frequent brushing. The type of coat also dictates how often they should be bathed. If the Pugapoo has the longer, curly, Poodle-like coat, they should be bathed every three to six weeks. Are Pugapoos Hypoallergenic? Do Pugapoos Shed? Pugs are pretty heavy shedders, although Poodles are hypoallergenic and generally non-shedding. When mixed together, the shedding may be better controlled. However, when a mixed breed has only one hypoallergenic parent, it is impossible to guarantee that the offspring will be hypoallergenic. The only way to guarantee a hypoallergenic offspring is if both of the parents are hypoallergenic. The Pug Poodle mix averages about a year lifespan. Pugapoo Dog Breed Common Health Concerns: Although mixing breeds often minimizes health problems, there is still the potential for health problems to arise. Pugapoos have some potential health problems that you should be aware of. Some other potential concerns that warrant your attention include allergies, epilepsy, and brachycephalic syndrome. Due to the cost of treating these common health concerns, we highly encourage all dog owners invest in pet insurance. We recommend getting a free online quote from Healthy Paws Pet Insurance. These dogs are considered highly intelligent, and adequate amounts of mental stimulation are important for them. This keeps them entertained and decreases the chances of them participating in destructive behavior. This dog may be slightly wary of new visitors, and will you give a bark or two to alert you to their presence. This friendly dog is usually great with children, although older children are preferable. Pugapoo Dog Breed Activity Requirements: Pugs are not considered very active dogs requiring much activity. Poodles, on the other hand, do require a significant amount of exercise due to their working past. Estimate dedicating around 45 minutes of your day to giving a Pug Poodle Mix a proper amount of exercise. This can be in the form of walks and trips to the dog park where they can romp with other dogs. As a puppy, a Pugpoo may require more exercise than just 45 minutes. Something to be cautious about with this breed is their bradycephalic condition. Their flat snout contributes to this and can have adverse effects on ability of the Poodle Pug mix to breathe properly, especially after physically exerting themselves. Additionally, be careful that the Pugapoo does not become overheated. Keep water nearby and always encourage frequent breaks. Photo courtesy of maya. Alternative Breeds to the Pug Poodle Mix. Gold Cream. Pugapoos are good house pets, and they tend to be easy to handle. This dog is a good family dog and handles children well, as they are playful. They are affectionate and loyal to their owners. The Pugapoo is a gentle, social, and intelligent dog with hints of whimsy in its character. This makes them a lot of fun but difficult to train. They are friendly to strangers and can get along well with other dogs, cats, and pets. They have some degree of separation anxiety as they enjoy being around people and other animals. Otherwise, they are relatively quiet. Seeing as they are playful and energetic, they can be difficult to train at first. The owner must exercise positive reinforcement when training to yield the best results. They are also easily potty trained. The Pugapoo has unique traits that are formed from being a hybrid of two different breeds. Give them some exercise, proper grooming, and a healthy diet, and you are good to go. They are also able to live in any type of environment. Just be careful of increased heat or cold temperatures and look out for panting, which is typically an indication of overheating. Exercising your Pugapoo The little bodies of the Pugapoo can store a lot of energy, which means the dog can be lively and active. Exercise is a good way to get some of that excess energy out of their bodies. A lengthy walk once a day would be an ideal amount of exercise. Playtime with their owners is also a great activity. Grooming: Are Pugapoos hypoallergenic? The difference in coats means that some Pugadoos can be quite hypoallergenic if they have a bit more fur like the poodle coat. However, Pugapoos with short fur are not known to be hypoallergenic. The various kinds of coats from Pugappoos mean that their grooming needs also vary. The Pugapoos might have to visit the parlor every six weeks at most, depending on their coat type. But they do require their teeth to be brushed at least once a day to prevent gum recession and wobbly teeth. Feeding a Pugapoo: What is their food consumption? Make sure that the food you are giving your Pugapoo is high-quality and that it is meant for dogs of the same size and level of energy. You can feed them twice a day with controlled portions as not to overfeed the dog. Instead, Pugapoo puppies should be eating food made for their growing bodies, which requires a lot of nutrients. What health problems does the Pug and Poodle Mix have? All dog breeds are susceptible to different health issues. Still, mix-breeds like a Pugapoo or a Goldendoodle are less likely to develop congenital conditions because of the larger gene pool than purebred dogs. Pugapoos do, however, still have the potential to develop some health conditions. Some signs that your Pugadoo has Legg-Calve-Perthes disease are a worsening limp, stiffness in one or both rear limbs, licking or chewing at the hip area, muscle atrophy, and restlessness and aggression. Other health conditions Pugapoos are susceptible to are: Eye problems — mostly inherited. In general, it is a dog that is pretty affectionate, loyal and devoted, and makes a good apartment dog. Hence, careful training is required since they would be willing to please their masters. Pugapoos generally bark less, but can turn up to be barkers if they take too much after their poodle parents. They are naturally playful and get along well with kids and other pets, but will never forget alarming their family members if they hear a strange noise or see a stranger around. The breed does not do well if kept alone for long periods of time. Care Exercise Being a high-energy breed, with quite a good amount of activity, the pugapoo will obtain its exercise it needs on its own. Since it is an indoor breed, it does not need a significant amount of space to stay active. For all these reasons, the little canine does not require lots of exercises. Take it out for a short daily walk, or even a jogging session. The playful pugapoo would enjoy playing flyball, rally and obedience games with you. This should also keep them healthy and sound both physically and mentally. Grooming Grooming your pugapoo completely depends on its coat type. Brushing them once a month should be enough to keep it clean. They need occasional trimming. But you must also remember that the curly version of the pugapoo sheds relatively lesser than the short, straight version. Clip the hair to avoid tousles. If you know how to clip it, you can use your skills else, you can well take your dog to the professional. Do not bathe your dog frequently or unnecessarily. Give it a shower only when its coat is really dirty. Health Problems As most dog lovers would know, the gene pool of the crossbreed dogs is much larger than the purebred ones, and hence, the former breed of dogs are not as susceptible to developing congenital problems as the latter. However, this does not necessarily mean that your dog is completely protective of all health hazards and issues. Keep an eye for general dog issues like hip dysplasia, eye, breathing and dental problems, allergies, neurological problems like Pug Dog Encephalitis, thyroid, hormonal disorders, etc. Training Begin training your puppies before they are 16 weeks old because it is this time when new faces are more acceptable to the pups. Teach them tricks and train them to socialize well, but do use positive reinforcement techniques like food rewards and praises. Below are some activities for the dog: Walking or Jogging. This activity is encouraged since it would quickly burn down the energy level of your dog. Playing fetch. This is another alternative to walking or jogging outside. It also encourages mental stimulation since it would eventually learn new commands and react to it. The Pug Poodle mix is very intelligent. Like its Poodle parent dog side, the dog can be taught several dog tricks and follow new commands with ease. Children would enjoy learning how to train the Pug Poodle puppy and appreciate its presence at home. This dog is also an ideal companion for people living in smaller spaces such as dorms and apartments. And because the dog should have constant companionship, it makes for ideal dogs for senior citizens or retirees who spend most of their days at home. Additionally, the Pug Poodle mix could adapt to different climates or temperatures. The Pug Poodle mix loves to fool around and play in its own way with its owner, so expect it to be noisy when it plays with you. The dog does well with other dogs and animals because of its social disposition. A Pug Poodle mix has a loving personality that makes it more than qualify as a special member of the family. Lifespan Sociability One big draw of the Pugapoo is their relatively low cost compared to either parent. Both the Pug and the Poodle are fully pedigreed breeds, accepted by the major canine organizations. This means that their puppies can get very expensive. Pugapoos, however, are a designer breed. As an alternative, you can check around at local shelters and see if there are any Pugapoo puppies available for adoption. Some Pugapoos Are Hypoallergenic One of the multitude of desirable traits displayed by the Poodle is their hypoallergenic fur. Allergies are a major deterrent that prevents many people from experiencing the joy and companionship of a lovely canine companion. Not all Pugapoos are hypoallergenic because offspring only inherit some traits from each parent. Their genetics may heavily favor one parent or the other, or they could possibly get nearly equal traits from both. They can be almost any color, usually a mixture of several. Moreover, they can range drastically in size, weight, and even temperament. You can have a litter of Pugapoos where each pup looks completely unique. This is actually quite common, with each puppy taking apparently random genetic cues from each parent. You could take two siblings from a litter that look like entirely different breeds of dog! They Prefer to Stay Indoors Some dogs are perfectly happy spending the majority of their time outside. In fact, some dogs are happier this way! But not the Pugapoo. This is an indoor dog through and through. Your dog will be very unhappy and will openly display its displeasure to let you know. Pugapoo pups tend to follow suit, generally displaying above-average levels of intelligence. These are also very playful and affectionate dogs. They want to be close to their person, playing together or cuddling up all the time. Are These Dogs Good for Families? A Pugapoo that has been around kids and other pets since it was young is going to be a very social dog that gets along well with just about everyone. Pugpoo Description The Pugapoo is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Pug and the Poodle. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. She has a wonderful personality, was easy to train and is very loveable. She likes to sleep under the blankets like a human. She definitely does not have the Poodle fur at all. Jasmine's fur can been seen on the couch, carpet and on our shirts when we hold her, but it's fine, small hairs that we see, not big clumps like some dogs would leave behind. Notice how some of the puppies have Poodle-type coats which will not shed and some have Pug-type coats which may or may not shed. The pups with the Poodle coats you will have to take to the groomer to get clipped. The pups with the Pug coats may stay short and you may not have to get them clipped. However, this will not be certain until the pups grow up. Update: This is a picture of Rosco, one of the Pug-looking pups shown above, all grown up at about a year old. His owners say, "He is very unique. He doesn't have to be groomed, but when he is, his hair is vastly different. It is softer, lighter and doesn't shed. They are fun and loving and make great pets! In this guide, we will discuss the characteristics of Pugapoos, their temperament, price in Australia, dietary needs, and everything else you need to know about this cute little designer dog. What is a Pugapoo? Two adorable and smart dog breeds, namely the Pug and a Poodle, give us the sweet and loving Pugapoo. These heavily wrinkled dogs were bred to be lapdogs for royalty and are one of the ancient dog breeds from China. Pugs are toy dogs but despite their small size, they are quite strong. Poodle Poodles are hypoallergenic dogs popular for their low-shedding, water-resistant coats and high intelligence. They were the most popular dogs from .They are also consistently second on the list of the smartest dog breeds in the world. Their country of origin is Germany where they were bred for duck hunting. Origin of the Pugapoo Pugapoos and other hybrid or crossbreed dogs have always existed since the dawn of time. However, breeders started studying the science of crossbreeding only in the s since more and more potential dog parents were looking for a compact, smart, low-shedding, and highly trainable dog. Around this time, the popularity of Doodle breeds crossbred dogs having one Poodle parent also escalated. Poodles were ideal for crossing with other popular dog breeds thanks to their high intelligence and low-shedding coats. The Pugapoo is a small, compact dog that combines the fun-loving attitude of both parent breeds. Pugapoos are not purebred dogs so there is no standardisation as far as their height and weight are concerned. Also, some breeders use Miniature Poodles in their breeding program while others use Toy Poodles. In general, most Pugapoos weigh between lb. The coat and appearance of a Pugapoo are also dependent on complex canine genetics. Some Pugapoos inherit the wrinkled short coat and characteristic black face mask of a Pug while others might inherit the tight, curly coat of the Poodle. If the Pug genes are dominant in your Pugapoo, then it might shed heavily and that could trigger allergies in people that are sensitive to dog dander. The common coat colours seen in Pugapoos are black, white, cream, tan, merle, apricot, fawn, blue, silver, etc. Pugapoos are hybrid dogs with dual personalities: your pet will be content to lie on the sofa by your side all day but it will also be active, playful, and cheerful from time to time. The Pugapoo is a charming dog that will win friends and influence people with its smartness, pleasant disposition, and cute looks. Being compact in size, Pugapoos are excellent pets for apartment dwellers. They also do well in the city and countryside and thanks to these advantages, we are sure the popularity of this rare designer dog breed will rise in the years to come. Your Pugapoo puppy will be completely focused on you. As a pet owner, you can take advantage of this fact and begin training your dog early on. This not only includes potty training but also obedience training. The sooner you teach your Pugapoo basic manners and simple commands such as Sit, Stay, Heel, Come, etc. Your Pugapoo will follow you from room to room and stick close to you like a shadow. Their strong people-pleasing skills combined with a stable temperament make Pugapoos excellent companions for adults and mature kids alike. Your pup will even be willing to wear clothes and march in just-for-dog show events if that pleases you! Just like in any breed, there can be a range of temperaments in the Pugapoo. Some could be shy, introverted, and even aggressive. However, these traits can be reduced through proper training and early socialisation. However, when you buy your dog from a reputable breeder, you can insist on meeting the dam and sire. Ensure they are of friendly, calm and loving disposition so your chances of getting a friendly Pugapoo puppy will be higher. Fortunately, it is very rare to find a snappy Pugapoo. They are generally sweet-natured and affectionate dogs. On rare occasions your Pugapoo bites will be out of self-defense, therefore, you must make sure your children respect your Pugapoo. A well-trained Pugapoo will gladly accompany you to work, shopping malls, and even restaurants, and movie theatres. They are easy to travel with and their compact size and love for people make them excellent therapy dogs and service dogs. Training a Pugapoo is fairly easy given its smartness and people-pleasing nature. You can always keep your puppy motivated using tasty treats but do note that these small dogs tend to gain weight fast. So make sure to only use low-calorie, natural treats for training. Pugapoos make excellent pets for most people — individuals and families. However, they do have certain needs that you must fulfil. Pugapoos are fairly easy to groom but if your pet has wrinkled skin and a squashed-in face like a Pug, then it will need special care. The wrinkles tend to accumulate oil, debris, and moisture which can result in skin infections. You need to clean these skin folds daily. Also, Pugapoos are prone to brachycephalic airway syndrome like their Pug parent. This causes overheating or difficulty in breathing as well as issues like stenotic nares. You must take care not to over-exert your pet, particularly on hot Summer days. In Australia, some dogs also need surgical correction to reduce breathing difficulties. Like all dogs, the Pugapoo needs daily exercise. Thankfully, these dogs do not need as much as some of the larger and more energetic poodle mix breeds. A short walk or two a couple of times a day should be adequate for your Pug-Doodle. How Much Does a Pugapoo Cost? Some breeders might charge more if the parent dogs are championship, agility or obedience winners. Certain coat colours also cost more. In addition to the initial cost, you must also consider the monthly and annual costs of keeping a Pugoodle. You will spend on food, vet bills, training, grooming, pet insurance, etc. Pugapoo Barking The Pugapoo will usually only bark when there is something strange in their environment. Being a small poodle mix breed, a common behaviour problem can be barking and this can be problematic when it occurs at night or when the Pugadoodle is left alone Separation Anxiety. To help prevent your Pugapoo from barking, crate training should be undertaken when they are brought home. Crate training teaches your dog to be comfortable being independent of you and represents a safe place where they can have uninterrupted rest. Similarly, Pugapoos are smart dogs that require mental stimulation. A bored Pugapoo can be a loud barker and the way to stop the barking is to provide interactive toys like Stuffed Kongs, food puzzles, snuffle mats, licky mats and long-lasting chew treats. Is a Pugapoo Hypoallergenic? First-generation Pugapoos are the result of crossing a Pug with a Toy Poodle. The resultant Pugapoo puppies usually have a wire coat, that sheds less than their pug parent. F1b generation Pugapoos have a Pugapoo and a Poodle parent. Ethical Poodle mix breeders DNA test their breeding dogs for coat traits like furnishings and shedding genes. Such breeders have a greater insight into whether their Pug cross puppies will grow to be Hypoallergenic when fully grown. What to Feed a Pugapoo? Small dogs like Pugapoos need more calories per pound than large breed dogs, because of their high metabolisms. In addition to higher metabolic rates, they also have low body fat reserves. Due to this, they could suffer from hypoglycemia. Symptoms of hypoglycemia include lethargy, muscle tremors, etc. Therefore, you must feed calorie-dense meals to your Pugapoo puppy times a day while adult Pugapoos can be fed times a day or as advised by your vet. Like all small dogs, Pugapoos are susceptible to dental issues since they have small mouths with crowded teeth. Bacteria tend to remain trapped in their teeth, especially at the back of the mouth. Remember that Pugapoos love food and will gladly eat whatever you set in front of them. Health Issues in Pugapoos Due to the overall unhealthy structure of a Pug, many Pug mixes including Pugapoos tend to suffer from similar health issues seen in the parent breed. Of importance is the Brachycephalic Syndrome mentioned earlier. Their flattened facial structures could result in breathing issues. What is the Life Expectancy for a Pugapoo? The average lifespan of healthy Pugapoos is around 13 years. Subscribe for poodle mixed dog breeds information and exclusive offers on the best products for your pup! Puppy vomit is common. This is because dogs have a well-developed vomiting center in their brains, which allows them to throw up much easier than many other animals. While most of the time harmless, puppy vomit can, however, be a sign of serious and even life-threatening illness. So, it pays to understand the full range of causes and implications. A: Yes, it is normal for puppies to vomit. Puppy vomit however can also be a sign of serious and even life-threatening illness. Q: A: Yes, it is not uncommon for puppies to vomit often. Puppies are subject to a range of condition and experiences that trigger vomiting such as eating too much, too often, eating foreign objects or intolerance to human foods, consuming toxic or poisonous substances, or as a reaction to conditions of stress or anxiety. How often is too often? Multiple episodes of vomiting on the same day or on subsequent days, vomiting accompanied by diarrhea, or acting sick or lethargic or appearing to be in pain are indications that it is time to call your vet. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting yellow? If your dog is throwing up bile with any frequency, you should have them checked out by a vet right away. Bile is a sign of a number of conditions that affect the digestive system, including inflammatory disease, ulcers, parasite infections, and certain cancers. In each of these cases, the underlying condition needs to be diagnosed and treated by a veterinarian to relieve the vomiting. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting white foam? A: Your puppy could be vomiting white foam for several reasons. The most common reason is that the puppy has eaten something that has irritated the stomach, such as grass and plant material. There are other more serious reasons a puppy vomits white foam, including obstruction of the stomach or intestines, toxin exposure, pancreatitis, and acid reflux. Coughing up white foam from kennel cough can often be mistaken for vomiting. If your puppy vomits white foam and acts sick in any way, call your vet for advice. Q: Why is my puppy vomiting after eating? A: There are several reason why your puppy might be vomiting right after eating. Overly-enthusiastic eaters, stressed puppies, or puppies who must compete with other dogs for food often eat too fast or too much food which can come right back up again. Try different solutions such as serving smaller meals more often throughout the day, placing food bowls in areas where there is less traffic or excitement, utilizing tools to slow down eating such as commercially-available slow feeder bowls, and where there is more than one dog in the house, feeding puppies in separate spaces can all help. If the condition is not environmental or conditional but rather physical such as regurgitation, consult with your veterinarian for an appropriate solution. While vomiting is not a specific disease or a diagnosis in and of itself, it is a clinical sign that can occur with many diseases or conditions. Generally speaking, occasional bouts of puppy vomit are not uncommon. If your puppy vomits once in a blue moon then it is likely no cause for concern. However, a puppy throwing up becomes more significant when: The vomiting does not stop There is blood in the vomit There is nothing left in the stomach to throw up except mucus and bile the yellow fluid Age matters, too. In puppies 6 months old or less, vomiting is also a more serious condition than in older dogs because of their smaller size, immature immune systems and tendency to become easily weak and dehydrated. While puppy vomit may have a simple, straightforward cause such as eating too much food too fast, stressful situations and gastrointestinal upset from eating foreign objects , it may be an indicator of something far more serious. Vomiting in puppies can have a wide range of causes, and determining the correct one may be quite complicated. For example, one of the more common and serious infectious causes of puppy vomit is parvovirus infection. Parvo is a viral infection that, if left untreated, is potentially fatal in puppies. Some symptoms that the puppy vomit is becoming more serious are: Frequent vomiting occurs more than once a day or on consecutive days Projectile vomiting when body expels vomit with more force than usual Appearing to be in pain or discomfort Acting tired or weak Bright blood present in vomit Dark blood present in stool looks like coffee grounds Vomiting in combination with diarrhea Visible abdominal bloating What are the causes of vomiting? The list is long and includes: Eating something that causes inflammation, obstruction or infection in the gut Abrupt change from regular dog food to something new Gobbling food or eating food too fast Intolerance to some human foods Reaction to stressful situations or condition of anxiety Acute bacterial or viral inflammation of the stomach or intestines Intestinal parasites e. Your veterinarian will utilize several tools to diagnose the problem, including a history from you what has been going on , a physical examination of your puppy, laboratory or imaging studies like x-ray or ultrasound or response to therapy. To help your vet make the diagnosis, bring a sample of the vomit to the clinic, because how the vomit looks can tell the vet a lot. A puppy throwing up food that is undigested can be due to food poisoning, anxiety, eating too fast or simply overeating. If bright red blood is found, the stomach could be ulcerated; if the blood is brown and looks like coffee grounds, the problem may be in the intestines. Strong digestive odors are usually observed when there is an intestinal obstruction. If it turns out to be no more than a passing incident, your veterinarian may ask you to limit the diet to clear fluids and to collect stool samples over that period as the underlying cause may be passed along in the stool. Vomit color or appearance. Below, I will mention a number of reasons why your German Shepherd might throw up a lot and the signs to look for. Some things that German Shepherds have been known to eat include bugs, grass, dirt and even poop. Illness The reason why your German Shepherd has been throwing up could be that it is ill. It would also be more likely if it has started to act differently as well by being less active and possibly aggressive at times too. Eating or drinking too quickly A common reason why a dog will throw up is that it has been eating or drinking things too quickly. This would be more likely to be the reason if it does it right after it eats or drinks. It would also be more likely if it regurgitates the food as opposed to vomits. This website shows the difference between regurgitation and vomiting. Basically, if the food is undigested and it does it right after eating then it is likely to be regurgitation. Exercising too soon after eating Another common cause of a German Shepherd throwing up is that it exercised before it was able to digest its food. This would be more likely if it only tends to throw up when it starts running about right after it has eaten. If it throws up right after eating but it is not active then it would be a sign that either it ate too fast or it ate something that it should not have. Motion sickness Travelling can be difficult for dogs and they can get motion sickness easily. If you notice that your German Shepherd only throws up on days that it has been traveling then it would be a sign that it is due to motion sickness. Stress Being stressed can cause German Shepherds to throw up. This would be more likely to be the reason if it only seems to throw up when stressful things happen. Examples could include if it does it when a certain person is around, if it started doing it after it lost a friend or if a family member recently moved away. If you notice that your German Shepherd tends to be sick when it does not have access to water then dehydration would be more likely to be the cause. This would be especially likely if it is also hot outside as well. How to reduce how much your German Shepherd throws up There are a number of things that you can do to reduce how much your German Shepherd throws up. However, before trying to reduce how much it throws up, it is important to try to get to the bottom of what is causing it to happen. If you are unsure of what the cause is then it would be worthwhile to take it to the vet to get an expert opinion. By doing this you will still be able to feed it the same amount of food overall but by feeding it in smaller quantities you will be able to reduce how likely it will be to eat too much too quickly. This will also reduce the likelihood of it being sick because of exercising too soon after eating. Wait before exercising If your German Shepherd tends to be sick when it exercises after eating then one thing that you can do is to try and reduce its ability to do exercise until it has had some time to digest its food. Make sure that you are feeding it the right food The cause of it throwing up all the time could be that something is not right in its diet. It would help to look here to see what you should be feeding your German Shepherd. Watch what it eats It would also help to watch what it eats throughout the day. Give it access to shaded areas and water If you live in a hot environment then giving it access to shade, water and a cool area throughout the day should help a lot in reducing how often it throws up. Take it to the vet If you are unsure of why your German Shepherd is throwing up then taking it to the vet would likely be your best option. Things to consider Whether or not the vomiting started suddenly If your German Shepherd started to vomit suddenly then it would be much more likely to be due to things such as heatstroke, illness or eating something that it should not have. If it is also acting strange then it would be highly recommended for you to take it to a vet. If it has been vomiting a lot over a long time period then it would make it more likely that it is something in its diet. When and where it tends to vomit Considering when and where it tends to vomit could help as well. If you notice that there is grass is in there then it would likely be due to eating grass. Related Why does my German Shepherd throw up after drinking and eating? This is likely to be because it either ate too fast or it started running around too soon after eating. In this case, you could try feeding it in smaller quantities or waiting for a while before letting it get exercise after eating. Reaction to a medication Acute Dog Vomiting Acute vomiting is something that comes on all of the sudden and has not been going on for a long time. Here are some reasons why a dog may suffer from acute vomiting: Eating Something Bad Dietary indiscretion is something that is more common in younger dogs. From getting into the trash to eating a poisonous outdoor plant , you will usually know very quickly that your dog is sick. If the food they get ahold of is super fatty, it can lead to another serious stomach issue called pancreatitis. Contagious Diseases Dog vomiting can be caused by certain contagious diseases as well, which are also more common in younger dogs. One of the causes of a dog vomiting from a contagious disease is parvovirus, which can be very serious. Certain breeds may be more susceptible to parvovirus, including Rottweilers , Doberman Pinschers , German Shepherds , Labrador Retrievers , and sled dogs. Intestinal Parasites Parasites can also cause vomiting in a dog. Then, all of the sudden, they may start showing symptoms such as vomiting. Contaminated Water Drinking out of puddles and community drinking bowls can cause some bacterial imbalances that may cause stomach upset in dogs. Drinking out of lakes with cyanobacterium blue-green algae can be deadly. The dog may first develop vomiting, but severe cases can progress to neurologic signs and death. Bloat Vomiting can be caused by bloat. Bloat or gastric dilatation and volvulus is an acute and life-threatening condition requiring patients to be hospitalized and aggressively treated. If the stomach fills with air and then twists on itself, it can cut off the circulation and cause the dog to go into shock. Eating or drinking excessively or quickly can be a factor in developing bloat. Chronic Dog Vomiting A chronic condition is one that goes on for a long time, and can be constant or every so often. Some dogs are prone to vomiting on a regular basis. Chronic vomiting in young dogs is often due to parasites or a food sensitivity. It can also be caused by certain diseases or health issues. Bloodwork, X-rays, ultrasounds, or biopsies are often necessary to diagnose the problem. Here are some of the common causes of chronic vomiting in dogs. Megaesophagus Megaesophagus , which is a generalized enlargement of the esophagus, can be caused by a number of conditions that can affect dogs of all ages. Some dogs can be born with the condition because that is just how their esophagus is formed. As the name implies, one may associate IBD with lower GI symptoms, but in fact, sometimes vomiting is the main symptom. Pancreatitis We mentioned pancreatitis as a common acute cause of vomiting in dogs. However, some dogs suffer from chronic pancreatitis, which makes them prone to vomiting on an ongoing basis. These dogs need to be fed a very low-fat diet without exception. If the vomiting has been going on for less than 12 hours, and your dog is perky and keeping down food and water, then it may be okay to wait and monitor the situation. One of the biggest dangers with dog vomiting is dehydration. When a dog becomes dehydrated, essential body functions start to break down. Your dog becoming lethargic after vomiting, or vomiting with shaking This could be a result of severe abdominal pain or cramping from electrolyte imbalances. You do not want to wait too long without veterinary attention. Your dog eating a foreign object, a known toxin, or something you suspect may be toxic projectile vomiting could signal eating a foreign object If you are unlucky enough to not stop it from going down the hatch, you can inform the vet or poison hotline right away what it was and find out what actions need to be taken. There are some home remedies that you can try if your dog is having mild vomiting and not any of the serious symptoms mentioned earlier. Pepto Bismol is not a preferred treatment for dogs. The concern about Pepto Bismol is that it contains salicylic acid, which is an ingredient in aspirin. We need to use this with caution, especially in dogs taking anti-inflammatories or steroids, as it could cause GI bleeding. Pepcid AC famotidine and Prilosec omeprazole are safer options to use to help reduce acid production and acid reflux, and these often settle their stomach. Medications to Stop Nausea and Vomiting Cerenia maropitant citrate is the most commonly used antiemetic medication that stops vomiting for dogs in recent years. It acts on a trigger zone in the brain to stop nausea, and also acts on receptors in the stomach. Vets will often start your dog with an injection of Cerenia and then follow up with pills every 24 hours for a couple of days to make sure the vomiting has been resolved. Reglan metoclopramide is less widely used but is still very helpful for motility disorders in dogs as well as megaesophagus. In addition to these measures, the veterinarian may also recommend feeding your dog a bland or easily digestible diet. Always use a gradual approach. Sudden dietary changes are a common cause of intestinal upset in dogs. These, too, are routinely implicated in vomiting episodes. Avoid table scraps. Some human foods are downright dangerous for dogs e. Scavenging also increases the risk of foreign-body ingestion and toxin exposure. Watch overly inquisitive dogs carefully. You might even want to try to use a muzzle to keep them from eating anything they might find along your walks. Featured Image: iStock. Lantry is a Milwaukee, Wisconsin native. Once you have established that your German Shepherd is in fact vomiting, and not regurgitating, the question then becomes: why does my German Shepherd vomit after eating? It is also the means of making sure that dogs, who are prone to eating just about anything they can get into their mouths on, are prevented from choking on something that they ingested. Although it is not always a cause for alarm when your German Shepherd vomits after eating, it is still advised to determine what may, in fact, be the root cause. There are several reasons as to why vomiting after eating may occur, and we will present and take a look at a few of these reasons below. Ruling out illness The first suggested step is to rule out any form of disease that may prove to be the primary cause of the vomiting. Vomiting may very well instead be an indication of health problems that your German Shepherd may be having or experiencing. There are several health-related issues that can present with vomiting after eating. Ear Infection German Shepherds have those perky ears that we all know and love, not the type that flop over against their heads. Breeds with these types of ears are more commonly known to be prone to ear infections. When a German Shepherd falls victim to a middle or inner ear infection, the disease usually turns into and presents with a yeast infection. Such a virus will give the dog a feeling of nausea followed by vomiting, especially after a meal. Fever When it comes to running a high temperature, German Shepherds are just as prone to this as any other animal. A temperature, much like with an infant or small child, will often times go hand in hand with vomiting after eating. Dehydration When dehydrated, dogs will present with much the same symptoms as we humans do. Just as dehydration and excessive heat can cause us to become severely nauseous, so can a German Shepherd. This may resultin producing unwanted vomiting after meals. In order to solve this issue, make sure your German Shepherd has plenty of cool water at their disposal, as well as fresh air circulating to keep them cool and comfortable at all times. If one of these instances are not present, then the occurrence of vomiting after eating could, unfortunately, be a cause for concern. Underlying Causes for Vomiting Side-effects of Medications German Shepherds are much like humans when it comes to starting a new regime of medication. Their stomachs can take a while to adjust to the medicine if it, in fact, it ever does at all. In an effort to lessen the problem of vomiting after eating, many vets suggest that medicine be given either two hours before or two hours after the meal. Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis Gastroenteritis in German Shepherds is an irritation of both the stomach and the intestines that is primarily caused when the gut has large amounts of fluid seep into it through its outer walls. Symptoms include vomiting after eating as well as bloody diarrhea. Although it is not currently known what causes this condition, if left untreated, there is the real possibility the situation may prove fatal. Obstruction An obstruction of any type can prove fatal for your German Shepherd. If the blockage occurs in the esophagus while eating, then the dog will automatically attempt to throw up its food. Its body does this in an attempt to dislodge the obstruction to clear its airway. If the blockage occurs in the stomach, or the bowel, your dog will still vomit after eating as their food will encounter resistance in passing through the digestive tract. Inflammatory Bowel Disease Although inflammatory bowel is more of a syndrome than an actual disease, it can be just as harmful, if not fatal, to your German Shepherd if left unchecked. Most often, symptoms include poor appetite, as well as recurrent, chronic vomiting after eating. Other than a lack of appetite, and weight loss from vomiting their meals, most German Shepherds will otherwise appear quite ordinary. Parasites There are a whole host of types of parasites that a German Shepherd can contract. The most common include hookworm, tapeworm, whipworm, and roundworm. When this happens, your German Shepherd will become very sickened and will present with vomiting after their meals as the body tries to rid itself of the worms. Toxins The list of toxins that can affect and sicken your dog is fairly extensive. This is presented by the dog vomiting after eating, as well as possibly other times as well. Liver Disease Experts state that the symptoms exhibited by a dog are the primary way to determine the root cause of the disease. The symptoms may range from specific to very vague. However, many German Shepherds will begin showing signs of: Malaise: Your dog will be lethargic and not as lively as usual. Weight loss: You will visibly notice your dog losing weight. Kidney Disease The symptoms of this disease can present with vomiting after eating lack of appetite increased water consumption The prognosis for a German Shepherd with this disease varies, depending on how fast treatment is started and how well they respond to the first treatments. Medicine, in most cases, with those dogs that respond well from the beginning, may provide a dog with years of additional quality of life. Infections Much like us humans, a German Shepherd can contract various infections. An infection can present with the occurrence of vomiting after eating. One such bacteria is the well-known salmonella. Viral There are a multitude of viruses that your dog can contract, including distemper and parvovirus. However, one that attacks and affects the intestines to a significant degree is that of the coronavirus. When this virus is present, the dog may present with vomiting after eating, as well as other times. Consuming Fatty Foods German Shepherds, like most canines, are omnivores. Their nutritional needs include meat, grains, and vegetables. Nature never intended them to have fatty foods in the mix. And as such, when fatty foods are included in their diet they are prone to vomiting them back up after eating them. Ingesting Foreign Objects As mentioned above, a dog will try and eat just about anything they are able to get a hold of, and this characteristic is by no means breed specific. The ingesting and attempt to swallow items such as stones, sticks, bones, or even their toys can cause them to throw up after eating as their stomach tries to expel the foreign objects. Stress And Anxiety Remember when you were stressed, or your anxiety was at such a fever pitch that you would feel absolutely nauseous? A German Shepherd can feel the exact same way. Only when they are nauseous, it usually presents itself with vomiting. If a German Shepherd eats when it is excessively stressed, excited, or anxiety-ridden, there is a pretty good chance that the meal will be vomited back up. Pancreatic Disease Pancreatitis in dogs, much like in humans, is both a quickly progressing and painful disease. When a German Shepherd presents with this ailment, the first symptom is usually vomiting after meals. If caught soon enough, the illness can be successfully treated, with little to no presence of permanent damage. However, if left unchecked long-term, the results could include severe organ damage as well as brain damage. Head Trauma Known as a concussion in humans, this presents in canines in much the same manner. The most notable symptom is vomiting, in some cases projectile, after eating. The trauma may only take a few days to clear up, or there may a more persistently severe underlying problem that requires immediate attention. Much like caring for a toddler, many German Shepherd owners will jump to the worst-case scenario when their dog vomits after eating. But the actuality is that a dog who is throwing up, in most cases, is not necessarily ill, or in need of being rushed to an emergency vet visit. More often than not, the answer may be a simple one, but your vet will be able to determine the solution. Either way, you will have the peace of mind that your German Shepherd is fit as a fiddle, and you will not be doing the dreaded clean up after them anymore. Inflammation in the intestinal tract Infection of the uterus Autoimmune issue Hereditary Digestive Disorders in German Shepherd Dogs According to the Central Texas Veterinary Hospital , German Shepherds as a dog breed tend to be more prone to certain hereditary digestive issues, including a sensitive stomach. Some of these digestive issues can send out warning signs in the form of chronic vomiting episodes. Each of these health issues is known to occur with greater frequency in the German Shepherd dog breed and could potentially cause vomiting. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency As the United Federation for Animal Welfare UFAW explains, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency causes the pancreas to slow down the secretion of necessary digestive enzymes. This disease is considered to be heritable genetic and degenerative. The pancreas slowly fails and as it does so, it produces fewer digestive enzymes to help your dog digest its food. Vomiting is often accompanied by weight loss, muscle mass loss, greasy coat, and malnutrition. Without treatment, this condition is fatal. Bloat is not well understood but it can quickly become fatal even with treatment. Often dogs will develop bloat if they drink too much water or eat too soon after exercising vigorously. Bloat causes the stomach to twist inside the chest. This cuts off airflow to the stomach, leading to severe distension and death. There is a simple surgery your veterinarian can do that can prevent bloat. Sensitive stomach and food allergies German Shepherd dogs are more likely to have sensitive stomachs and food allergies than are many other dog breeds. As PetMD explains, vomiting is a very common sign of sensitive stomach and food allergies. Similarly, sometimes one German Shepherd will have more sensitivity than another, just like some people can eat anything and not suffer while others have to have a limited diet. CIBD is chronic. It is caused by inflammation in the intestinal tract, often brought on by intolerance to certain foods, bacteria, or parasites. German Shepherd Throwing Up Versus Regurgitation Earlier in this article, we mentioned that there is a difference between a German Shepherd throwing up or regurgitating. But how can you tell one from the other? Signs of German Shepherd throwing up vomiting As Washington State University Veterinary Medical Center explains, vomiting is an active process that involves the stomach and upper intestinal tract. You will see retching, heaving, and a lot of body discomfort. It is common to see a yellowish foamy liquid which is stomach bile. The pH of vomit is going to be very acidic because of this bile. Signs of German Shepherd regurgitating Unlike vomiting, regurgitation is considered to be a passive process. All your German Shepherd needs to do to regurgitate the food is lower their head and let the food come back up and out. Your dog may try to eat the food again without any obvious signs of physical distress. What can you do to diagnose the cause of the vomiting and help your dog feel better? You want to know if your German Shepherd got into anything or ate anything that might be indigestible, toxic, or poisonous. If you are witnessing an isolated vomiting incident, this becomes especially important because it is more likely your dog is reacting to a toxin in the environment or a non-food item they have ingested. If the throwing up is recurrent, notice when each incident happens and write down what happened just before your dog threw up. Your veterinarian will ask you these types of questions to get a sense of why your dog is vomiting repeatedly. Take a sample of the vomit to your veterinarian You should take your German Shepherd to the veterinarian to start the diagnostic process. This can help determine if your dog might have an infection or parasites. Your veterinarian will also want to do some tests. Try a limited ingredient diet LID Because the German Shepherd dog is a breed that has a known genetic susceptibility to sensitive stomach and food allergies, your veterinarian may recommend starting your dog on what is called a limited ingredient diet, or LID. This diet takes 60 days and involves systematically cutting out and then reintroducing food ingredients that might be triggering sensitive stomach or food allergies. Sometimes this diagnostic diet is paired with allergy testing, either subcutaneous under the skin or blood, or both. Puppies go to their new forever homes before their entire digestive and gastrointestinal system is fully formed and stable. Their immune systems and bowel and bladder functions are still developing as well. Puppies are also undergoing a series of vaccinations that may cause side effects. This also makes puppies more susceptible to contagious canine diseases like parvovirus which can cause throwing up. All of this can mean that puppies throw up more frequently. Because puppies are so little, anytime your puppy throws up you should always consult your veterinarian for guidance. German Shepherd adult dog throwing up When an adult German Shepherd is throwing up, you will want to follow the process outlined above here to identify the frequency, examine the immediate environment and take your dog in for diagnosis and treatment. In the same way, senior German Shepherds can be more prone to developing serious issues like canine cancer that can cause chronic vomiting. German Shepherd senior dog throwing up As Vetstreet explains, dental problems can also cause vomiting. The main reason is that tooth decay, tooth loss, tooth pain, and gum disease may cause pain or difficulty chewing the food and lead to digestive upset and vomiting.

Crate training will keep your pug protected from household hazards, help with house training, and give him a place to retreat when he's overly excited. An ideal crate size is 24 inches long x 18 inches wide x 21 inches high 61 cm x 46 cm x 53cm. Place a blanket on top of the crate so it feels like a cozy den to your pug. Leave the crate door open at all times during this part of crate training. This will allow your pug to explore the crate at his leisure, without fear of you closing the door behind him. For crate training to be effective, your pug must learn to be comfortable in the crate when its door is closed. Gradually, have your pug wait up to 10 minutes after a meal before you open the door. You may need to leave your pug crated for hours at a time during the day, and maybe overnight. Sit with him briefly, leave the room for few minutes, then return to the crate. Work up to leaving the room for 30 minutes. Reward him with a treat each time he responds to it correctly. Practice leaving the house when you crate him. Do not get your pug worked up when you leave home or return; this could build up a lot of anxiety and anticipation in your pug. A common concern with crate training is whether to respond to whining, especially with overnight crating. Just be prepared for the whining to get worse before it gets better. Pugs aim to please, but can get sidetracked by a short attention span. When your pug stays focused on your finger on your nose, immediately give him a treat. Lengthen the time he watches your finger before you reward him. When your pug learns the basic commands, he will have the proper foundation to behave well and learn even more commands. Basic commands include sit, stay, come, and heel. If his short attention span is making training difficult, consider enrolling him in a local dog obedience class. Use plenty of positive reinforcement verbal praise, treats, extra petting each time your pug correctly follows a command. The more excited and positive you are, the more your pug will try to please you and behave properly. Pugs love to chew. Teaching your pug to 'leave it' will help keep him from chewing something inappropriate e. If you cannot stay with your pug all day and take him outside frequently, gate off an area in your home for him to stay during the day. Place some pee pads in the corner of this space where he can eliminate. When your pug urinates, the urine would go through the grass into the underlying tray. Place his water bowl and bed in the gated area. Without knowing when he should eliminate, your pug may have accidents in your home more often. A consistent bathroom routine is very important for puppies, since they cannot hold their bladders for very long. If you have a pug puppy, take him out first thing in the morning, 15 to 20 minutes after eating, after naps, and before bedtime. As he gets a little older and has better bladder control, you can start leaving his water in the crate overnight. The indoor gated area lessens the need for frequent outings during the day. However, it may take longer to house train your pug if he gets used to eliminating on pee pads or in the litter box. Your pug should learn to eliminate in the same area each time you take him outside. If you have a backyard, take him out on a 6-foot 2-meter leash, stand in one area of your yard, and let him pick a specific spot within a 6-foot radius of the leash. Examples of this body language are sniffing around, looking for a private place, going to the door, and whining. Give him a treat and verbal praise when he eliminates so he makes a positive association with eliminating outside. When you reward him for eliminating, he will also be learning how to respond to your command. It can take time—up to 20 minutes—for your pug to relax enough to eliminate outside. If you become impatient, you may experience what many other dog owners have experienced: elimination as soon as the dog gets back inside. Twenty minutes can feel like an eternity, so bring something with you e. If you pug has an accident and he probably will clean it up promptly with an enzymatic cleaner that will erase the urine smell. The AKC advocates for the responsible ownership of dogs and promotes purebred dog events, such as the Westminster Dog Show. Go to source If your pug smells the urine, he will likely go back to that spot to eliminate. Do not punish your pug, whether you catch him in the act or not. Doing so will make him fear you, rather than teach him not to have another accident. Your adult pug may have had some previous training, but it may not have been completed or consistently reinforced. Ask the rescue group or animal shelter from where you adopted your pug about what types of additional training he will need. Be patient with your adult pug during the training process. If your adult pug was mistreated by his previous owner, he may be extra sensitive to yelling or harsh punishment. If you have other household members, have them all train your adult pug. The good news is that crate training a pug when done right can be relatively easy and fast compared to most breeds. The crate training process should start as soon as the pug is home, and the younger the puppy the better, old dogs have already acquired habits that need to be changed. Should pugs be crate trained? Unless your dog has some sort of separation anxiety or old bad experiences with the crate, then yes you should definitely crate train your pug or any breed for that matter. Before you do that, you should know a few things to make a good buying decision and have the perfect tools for the job. Choosing the right crate There are various types of crates and each has its pros and cons, depending on how you plan to use it and the breed of dogs you have. The most popular crates are the wire and plastic crates, there are also the heavy-duty ones for strong and aggressive dogs. Pugs are not large nor aggressive dogs, so there is no need for a heavy-duty crate, but a soft-sided crate is not a good idea neither. Pug crate size Choosing the perfect-sized crate for your pug is the most important thing about the whole process, If you get this wrong it can make the crate training difficult, longer, and perhaps even impossible. So how big should a crate be? The crate should be big enough for the dog to stand up, lay down and turn around comfortably with a few extra inches on each side. The crate should have a divider to adjust its size as the puppy grows not to change crates every couple of months. According to the AKC standards, pugs are inches in height and weigh around pounds, for a dog this big the perfect crate is 24 inches. We strongly recommend the Midwest Ultima Pro Metal Crate check price at Amazon , it comes with a divider and has a double doors feature which makes exploring it easy for the dog in the early stages of the training. Treats should be small in size to help you lure the puppy into the crate, reward good behavior and encourage the puppy when inside the crate. Chew toys will help you keep the puppy distracted inside the crate when you need to leave and after the meals. Interactive toys will help release the energy before your pug goes into his crate, and make a good training session to bond and also as a rewarding activity. A dog that is low on energy especially after a play session is more willing to go into the crate to relax, but interactive toys are to be used only for that purpose and when you are there. On the other hand, your pug can have access to his chew toys at all times especially inside the crate to keep him distracted. So what makes a good crate placement? The crate should not be placed next to noisy machines like refrigerators, heaters, or anything disturbing. It should not be directly exposed to the sun or in a spot with too much airflow. At night it should be close to your bedroom so you can hear the puppy when whining or when it needs to go for a break. Following this advice, it would be better to start in the morning so your dog has an entire day to interact with the crate before he has to sleep in it. We recommend doing it on the weekend morning to get as much time as possible to introduce your dog to his new home and get some bonding and interaction done before nighttime. Following these easy steps will make the crate training easier and faster, so make sure each step is valid before you move on to the next. Take your pug preferably with the leash on and just circle around the crate for a couple of minutes, let him sniff around, and check the crate out. When your pug gets inside the crate to get the treat you need to reward with more treats and verbally praise him. The best way to create a bond with the crate is to use food and toys, start serving your dog his meals in the crate then secure a chew toy inside the crate for your dog to stay inside as long as possible inside. Pug in the crate closed While your pug is enjoying his meal inside the crate you can slowly close the door while keeping an eye on his reaction. In the beginning, you want to stay next to the crate while your pug is feeding with the crate closed, when he finishes his meal offer a chew toy to keep him distracted inside. If things are going as planned you can leave the room for a couple of minutes at a time and then go back inside but act casual. At this point, you can leave the house for 30 minutes at a time, but you want to keep a couple of things in mind. Crate training a pug at night Crate training a pug at night is the hardest part especially the first night , but if you start early in the morning and introduce your dog to his crate it will sure be easier. You can expect to wake up a few times especially in the first few nights as most puppies will start whining and barking at night and also need to go for a potty break since young puppies especially small breeds can not hold it throughout the night. You can reduce the number of breaks by simply taking your dog for a walk just before he goes into the crate and also stop giving him water at least a couple of hours before. At night it is best at the beginning to have the crate placed close to your bedroom or in it so you can hear the puppy if he starts whining, usually just talking or gently tapping on the crate will suffice to calm him. How long can a pug stay in the crate? The time a puppy can spend in the crate depends on many factors, including age, the breed, and the activity level, but in general, young puppies can not stay for longer than one hour with two to three sessions a day. Pugs are not very active dogs, so adults that have had enough exercise and playtime before crating could stay from two to three hours at a time in the crate twice a day. Are pugs hard to crate train? The only difficulty being the breed is of small size so at first you might need to wake up a few times at night as they have small bladders and will need a pee break. Related Posts. Why you should crate train your puppy I know this has been emphasized enough times already but I will say it once more, crating dogs is not being inhumane but a way of liberating them. A place he can retreat to find peace, calm, and alone time. You can go about your duties in the home without worry or distraction. Crates also come in handy when you want to step out of the house for a couple of hours and you have no one to pet sit. You can rest assured that you will not come to a messed-up house with litter allover, gnawed sofas, and pee in your fur carpet. Another great reason to start crate training is that it is the easiest way to housetrain your puppy. Since he will not want to potty where he will be sleeping, he will be forced to hold the bladder until when he is taken out. Crates are also a super convenient way to travel with your puppy. They are safer than having to keep checking on them as you drive knowing how playful and cheeky pug puppies are. You can use them for both short trips like to the vet, groomers, or grocery store as well as for long trips like interstate drives. In case of emergencies, it is safer and easier to move your puppy in a crate. In the midst of panic during emergencies, a puppy may run away out of fear which can be frustrating having to run after him. If you have multiple pug puppies, you can buy one with a divider, that way you can set a specific size space for each pug instead of buying several crates which can take up so much space. Finding the Right Crate Size and Type The perfect crate size should allow your puppy some room to make some movement like turning, lying down, and standing. Then add inches on all the measurements. Crates come in small, large, and medium sizes, most likely your puppy will fall into the small category size, but still, go ahead and check from the above measurements the category your puppy falls. If you would rather take a bigger crate that your puppy will grow into you can take a size up and use cardboard or dividers to allocate a sizeable amount of space. Crates are made of different materials and each material is ideal for specific purposes. Depending on your lifestyle, you may end up having more than one crate. We have wire crates which are mostly open, collapsible, and lightweight. These are perfect for owners who live in warmer areas or for use during the warmer months because they allow maximum airflow to keep your puppy cool. Since they are collapsible, they are great for traveling and movement from one room to another. Next, we have plastic crates. These are pretty sturdy and durable and great for air transport as they meet most airline requirements. We also have wooden crates. These come in a variety of styles and designs and are great for people who are keen on aesthetics. These however require permanent storage space and tend to be heavy therefore not portable. Lastly, we have the popular soft-sided crates that almost all small breed owners have. They are super light, portable, and great for short trips. Just like wooden crates, they come in a variety of sizes, designs, styles, and colors. When choosing a crate size and type, consider key things like portability, sturdiness, how well the crate blends with your home decor and ventilation. As for traveling, choose a crate that is lightweight, safe, has handles and allows enough ventilation. Its recommended that you get a crate that has ventilation space on opposite sides. Choose a place with high traffic, your dog still needs to feel part of the family even though in a crate. The living room or even in the kitchen would be perfect. However, if your pug puppy is the kind that prefers total alone time and gets anxious in a busy and noisy place, you are better off setting it up in a secluded corner. Ensure the place is clean, ventilated, away from direct sunlight and heat. It should not be too hot neither too cold. Set it up and allow your puppy to explore the crate. Remember pugs can get pretty anxious very fast when around strange things. Part of them getting familiar with the crate will include poking, scratching, and pulling it. Give them a few days before you can begin the training. Stock Up the Crate Once your puppy is comfortable being around the crate, stock it up with their essentials- food, water, toys, and bedding. Most preferred is to get one that you can clip on to the wall of the crate. Stock up a couple of his chewy toys too to keep him busy and to prevent him from chewing his beddings. For the first day, you want to put your puppy in the crate when he is maxed out. By this time he will be looking to take a good rest. Lead him to the crate, close it up, and walk away without looking at him. Continue with your chores as if nothing is strange. Come back later and open the crate to let him out. Repeat this several times a day every day until he associates the crate as his retreat space. Take note of his behavior while in there, if he seems anxious or agitated, take him out. It could be that he wants to toilet or he simply wants out. After a couple of days, start leaving him alone inside the crate. Step out for about 10 minutes, increasing the duration each day until he gets used to being in the crate alone with no one watching him. Never push, pull, or force him to get inside the crate. If he refuses, let him be. Try again after an hour or so. You want him to learn to get in the crate whenever he wants to. Crating only when leaving will make him associate the crate with being abandoned. Keep your kids away from it. They should not play with the dog when in the crate or play inside the crate when the puppy is out of it. Make it a habit to exercise your puppy before crating him. As mentioned earlier, pugs are naturally playful, and crating him when he is under-exercised will cause him to be agitated and restless and may make crate training so frustrating for both of you. Leave the crate open so your puppy can walk in anytime they want to without you having to lead them to it. Every four weeks, you can increase the duration by minutes. By the time he is 17 weeks and more, he should be able to be doing hours at a go. However, it should never go longer than that. However, there are times when you will be forced to cut short his crate time like when he wants to use the toilet, he is crying uncontrollably, vomiting or eliminating, or when he is very agitated. Pugs are naturally active breeds and so they need to be active way more than they need to sit and relax. Ignore your puppy when he whines or fusses wanting to be let out unless you are very convinced there is a need to. You will know when your puppy is scared when he shows signs like flat ears, trembling, and having their tail down. Some even defecate when scared. Going ahead with the crating will only make things worse. Also never crate a puppy that suffers from separation anxiety , this will make their condition worse. Instead, seek professional help to deal with the anxiety. Puppies with separation anxiety show signs like drooling, excessive gnawing, non-stop crying and barking as well as soiling the house. This also applies to puppies with special medical conditions like convalescing. For these puppies, freedom of movement is what they need to help them feel better. And lastly, never use crating as a punishment. This will make your puppy hate the crate as they associate it with negative feelings that come with punishment. Also crating them just because they are demanding your attention and you want your peace and quiet is a form of punishment. After all, you signed up for it. You knew puppies demand affection and attention. The best way to start night time crate training is to ensure that your puppy is super tired before bedtime. Keep them very active one or two hours leading to bedtime so they are exhausted. They will fall asleep with no fuss. Wake him up if you catch them snoozing just before bedtime. Avoid nap times in the late afternoon or early evening. For the first few nights, have him sleep in your bedroom just so he can feel safe with you around. Every couple of days move the crate away from your room towards where you intend it to be eventually. During the first few nights of crate training, your puppy may whine and even cry uncontrollably. Let him whine till he falls asleep. Coming out to engage him will only encourage this naughty nighttime behavior. Soon he will learn that bedtime means only one thing- sleeping till morning and only coming out for bathroom breaks. If getting a wire or wooden crate or a crate with no enclosures, you may need to cover the crate, especially at night so as to keep your puppy warm. Covering the crate can help some dogs feel safer. Covering also helps to keep the dog under-stimulated at night and undistracted during their daytime naps. It makes them feel calm and relaxed. If however, you find that your puppy gets anxious or stressed remove the cover. Use old towels or bedsheets to cover the sides of the crate. Those tiny pieces of clothes can choke your puppy or cause obstruction. This can be very dangerous not to mention amounting to costly vet bills. You can also use wooden cardboard or specially designed crate covers. Puppies are notoriously playful and would rather spend time with you than in a kennel. If you heed to everything we have taught you and put it into practice consistently, crate training should take you two to three weeks depending on the age of your puppy. So yeah, it is difficult but very doable and rewarding. Email One of the most cuddly and sweet yet, stubborn and destructive to stuffs at home is the pug breed. Increate the time of giving treats gradually until such time that the pug keep itself comfortable without you shoving treats every now and then.
