They don't have to spend thousands on stud fees and just breed whatever dogs they have access to- like moms to sons, fathers to daughters and so forth. They can do everything under the table instead of paying for licenses, registrations, and taxes. They don't have to buy new blankets, puppy pads and laundry detergent and just have the dogs live in their own filth in a barn. They don't have to pay for vaccines, dewormer, or medical care. They can let who lives live, and who dies die instead of rushing sick puppies to the vet for lifesaving care. They can stack cages on top of cages and keep a hundred breeding age dogs and push out dozens of litters per month. They can save time and labor by keeping dogs on wire bottom cages to let the poop and pee fall through the bottom instead of having the dogs exercising- after all a dog out of a cage is a dog you have to train and constantly keep your eyes on to stay out of trouble. You get the point. I do everything in my power to enrich the lives of my dogs as much as possible. I treat my dogs as if they were my own children. And in my personal philosophy if it ever comes to the point where I can no longer provide the five star care to my breeding program then I won't be breeding at all. I see it as- I purposely brought these dogs into the world so I should personally be responsible for them. Just like human children, if you don't want to dedicate your life to being a mom or dad, then please for the childs sake DONT reproduce. Furthermore, its my responsibility to find these puppies homes that will provide the same level of care that I do, or better. That is why I ask my families to submit a puppy application and why I ask so many personal questions. I need to know that my puppy is going into good hands. Don't buy a French Bulldog if you are never home. French Bulldogs are most famous for their clingy personalities. They don't want to be alone. Some families are lucky enough to work from home, or have family members home, can hire help, or can bring their pup to work- these are all wonderful situations considering the pup will almost always be with a responsible adult. If it is impossible to undergo immunotherapy, or take medication on a daily basis, then a dogless life may be your unfortunate reality because French Bulldogs DO shed. But the mother for sure should be on site, and you should get an idea of what she is like. In the case of my last German Shepherd, I was able to meet both parents. His mother was very kind and sociable and eager to be petted. While on the other hand, his father was clearly dominant, and not a dog to be messed with. Because of my prior experience and knowledge, my GSD turned out exactly as I thought he would — fairly sociable yet wildly protective of me. This was all right because I knew what to expect and I was able to train my dog properly to take the edge off of some of his more dominance behaviors. However, my choice was an informed decision based on years of experience. If you are new to owning a German Shepherd, this may not be an ideal combination. I would recommend for a new German Shepherd owner to consider making sure that both parents are more docile, and possibly even lean towards acquiring a female for your first German Shepherd. Visit the puppy on more than one occasion Just like people, puppies have their on days and their off days. You will not be able to get a very accurate picture of how your puppy will be on one short visit. In fact, with my last dog, I visited him at least 4 times and stayed for at least 30 minutes with him each time prior to taking him home. A good breeder will have no issue with you doing this, and in fact, will prefer it. They want their dogs to be well-matched with their new owners, so this is common practice. The puppy should become accustomed to the people it will soon be spending its entire life with. So the more familiarity that you build now in this phase, the easier that puppy will transition to home life with you and your family. All of these steps are positive reinforcement for your new puppy and will build familiarity and a bond even before you arrive home. Also, bring a small blanket or clothing item and ask the breeder to leave it with the puppy. This will allow your puppy to become familiar with the scent of you and your home. The dog tag can be any shape you wish, be it a bone, fire hydrant, oval, or in this case a circle. It should be attached to the collar by a metal ring. Let's move down to the body. Draw the right leg very straight and pointing towards us slightly. We should be able to see the pads of the foot as the dog takes a step forward. The fur on the legs should be pointing downwards and be thinner on the back of the leg. Don't forget to draw the tips of the claws sticking through the fur a little bit. The left leg should be bent upwards and the paw should be dangling down. The top of the paw will be covered with hair so that we cannot see and details of the paw. Next, draw the back and chest of the dog. The back should have plenty of hair strands combed over one another, but we should only be able to see a small portion of the dog's chest since the left leg is raised so high. The fur on the chest should loosely hang down. Also draw lots of strands of hair on the side of the dog's body that are blown back in the wind. The left hind leg should be very straight and pointing towards us as it is planted firmly in the ground. It should be almost parallel to the front right leg. Again, the paw will be covered in fur and we won't be able to see details. The upper portion of the leg should be hidden from view behind the left front leg. We should only be able to see a small portion of the right hind leg. The paw and lower half of the leg should be visible behind the left hind leg. The paw should be higher up than the left paw at this angle. Finally, draw the end of the tail behind the dog. It can be pointing in pretty much any direction you wish, since dog tails move freely as they run. Just be sure to draw it covered with many long strands of hair that blow in the wind. We can now ink our image! Use either a brush and ink or Micron markers. A brush works best since you can feather the fur and easily create fine tips that gradually get thicker as they near the body of the dog. Be patient and be careful not to erase any unneeded guide lines. When the ink has dried, erase the pencil marks with a kneaded eraser. You can add a greater sense of depth to the image by giving it a little shadow. Our dog is light colored, so don't add too many heavy shadows. Again, a brush works great for feathering the dark to light. Add shadow to the underside of the ears, the side of the nose, the inside of the mouth, the underside of the head, and underneath the chest. Also black out the pads of the paws.
