I am familiar with common and uncommon health problems they may face so when my boyfriend and I decided we were ready to adopt our own english puppy finding a reputable breeder that prioritizes health was most important to us. Erica and Mitch of Bruiser Bulldogs are just that. They are experienced, ethical and quality breeders. I was referred to them by my friend that I trust after I saw their gorgeous healthy puppy. Our Puppy Primrose is the light of our lives! Bruisers was there to assist us every step of the way. We would highly recommend Bruisers Bulldogs to anyone looking for their own happy, healthy pup! Leah H. We were lucky to have come across Bruiser Bulldogs and even more so the fact that they were near our family and hometown made it even better. We have had Clementine Callie for four months now, and she is a wonderful dog. Her personality is amazing, and I think part of it is breeding and the other part is Erika and her family lovingly raising the puppies in their home with plenty of attention and snuggles. I also was impressed that, rather than send the puppies out right at 8 weeks, Erika kept ours for a few extra weeks because she was tiny and not read to leave her mom yet. It's that care that differentiates Bruisers from other breeders. Emily R. Erica was easy to work with thru the entire process from application to adopting and now beyond as we host our new family member, Chief. Her on-call support and willingness to provide open, honest advice to all of our questions and concerns continues to be appreciated. We would highly recommend Bruiser Bulldogs to anyone looking for an English Bulldog to join their family. Elizabeth W. Lady L. They are experienced, responsive and knowledgeable about all things bulldog related. They went above and beyond for us and are truly dedicated to all of their pups! We love our little girl so much and would recommend Bruiser to anyone looking for a healthy beautiful bully. Jonathan E. Erica and Mitch are trustworthy, excellent communicators, fair, passionate, and produce the best bulldogs. We were at the top of the waiting list for months and Erica reached out every litter to see if we were finally ready for a bulldog. When we were, she was very easy to work with. Her knowledge on bulldogs is outstanding. We had many questions on the process and she always knew what was best for the puppy. We've had Penny formerly Blair for two months and she is very healthy, energetic, playful, and sweet. She is great with other people and dogs. We are so happy with our pup. When we are ready for bulldog 2, we will only consider Bruiser Bulldogs. Mitch C. Bowser was born April and is an integral part of our family. When we were first exploring English Bulldog breeders our biggest concern was the overall health of the dogs. We decided to work with Erica at Bruiser Bulldogs because we liked their focus on improving the breeds breathing abilities and the fact that the puppies are raised within her family environment before coming home with their new owners. Bowser also breaths clearly and our vet was impressed with his overall health from the moment we brought him home. All that said we know English Bulldogs have a predisposition to many health issues and that his current health can not predict the future. With that In mind its important to start with a breeder that open to answer any of your questions as Erica has ours, and that strongly believes in improving the breeds overall health profile. Adam B. My sister ended up finding Bruiser Bulldogs and we knew right away that they were the breeder for us. In September we ended up driving 9 hours to pick up two Bruiser bulldog puppies- one for my husband and I and one for my mom. Jackson and Penelope have been nothing but a joy. They are both very athletic and healthy. They are also HUGE snugglers and always want to be with you. It is an absolute pleasure having these two bullies in our lives! Erica is very knowledgeable about the breed. She is very hands on throughout the process and is just overall a kind and honest person to work with. With all that being said I cannot recommend Bruiser Bulldogs enough! Collyn C. One of the reasons we chose Bruiser Bulldogs was due to the claims about breeding for health. During our first visit at our vet's office, he told us that our pup was one of the healthiest English bulldogs he had ever seen. He is healthy, happy and social. Would recommend to anyone. Christina S. We seen our dog on their website and sent them an Email. Mitch called us and personally walked us through the process and made sure we had the right dog for our family. We couldn't be happier when we picked up our dog Ramsey, Erica made sure we had everything we needed and then some. They are truly amazing people who breed truly amazing dogs! Jim T. Nevertheless they are fantastic at lying on the couch and giving you the stink eye when you disturb their rest. Quick Guide to French Bulldogs French bulldogs were named for their origin story, which says that they were a breed of English toy bulldogs and several unidentified dog breeds. Not to be outdone by their British Bulldog cousin, the female french bulldogs also made the Top 10 Best Family Dog breeds list in .Looking to Adopt Bulldogs? You can have different colors in Brindle English Bulldogs like red brindle, fawn brindle, etc. Some English Bulldog Brindles come with beautiful chocolate, blue, or silver brindle patterns. What is a Brindle English Bulldog? Brindle English Bulldogs are standard English Bulldogs. Brindle English Bulldogs have stripes or brindle patterns. The pattern is subtle and not distinct as seen on a zebra. Rather, it is indistinct, blotchy, and more blended with the base color. In Brindle English Bulldogs, the base color and stripe colors may not vary much. Usually, the base will be darker and the stripes will be lighter. Sometimes, the stripes are present all over including the head and belly and, at other times, they may be only present in certain areas. Red is the most common color in Brindle English Bulldogs. However, breeders also breed for unique brindles in base colors like lilac, fawn, chocolate, black, silver, and blue. Often, Brindle English Bulldogs have grey, blue, or hazel eyes. Not really. Brindle is one of the accepted standard colors in English Bulldogs. In certain dog breeds like Labradors, the Brindle pattern is rare — but not in English Bulldogs. The brindle pattern occurs because the brindle gene is recessive to the black-colored gene. Dog Pricing Welcome to Dog Pricing, your comprehensive source for all things canine! Articles Anatolian Shepherds are intelligent and robust dogs that make them one of the most loved breeds by canine lovers. Speaking of cuteness, the Akita Anatolian Shepherd Mix is a ball of fluff with a spunky personality. But if you want all-muscle and hyper-loyal pups, the Tibetan Mastiff Anatolian Shepherd Mix rocks this department. Got allergies? The Anatolian Shepherd Poodle Mix should make things easy for you. Ready to meet these adorable Anatolian Shepherd Mixes? Here are 11 of them and why they are so popular among canine fanciers. But although their fur may be dense, they are not as difficult to groom as a purebred Akita. However, they do shed a lot, so that poses a problem for people with allergies. These dogs are obedient and easy to train. This makes them suitable for first-time dog owners. But they are not exactly the best with kids, and they are ideal for singles, couples, or folks who have no young kids at home. Tibetan Mastiff Anatolian Shepherd Mix Image from Instagram: howdysarge Combine a massive and muscular lb Tibetan Mastiff with an equally large Anatolian Shepherd, and you have a big pooch by your side. As seen with the characteristic luscious mane of a Tibetan Mastiff, this Tibetan Mastiff Anatolian Shepherd Mix has a medium-length coat in various shades, such as fawn, apricot, brindle, and brown. Also known as the American Mastiffs, these dogs may seem intimidating because of their size, but they are actually one of the sweetest Anatolian Shepherd Mixes you can ever have. These pups will not hesitate to curl up on the sofa with you for some cuddles. So what have you got? A furry, fluffy, and large cuddle bug of a pooch! The Anatolian Labrador Retriever mix has a strong desire to please its owner. They love to play but will never pass up some snuggle time. These are very loyal dogs that want nothing more than to keep their owners safe. They are bred to herd, just like the Anatolian Shepherds. They have the colors of an Aussie but the massive build of an Anatolian Shepherd. The aloof Anatolian Shepherd meets the outgoing Australian Shepherd in this unique mix. And when that happens, you have a loving, affectionate, and obedient pup right by your side. But one note for allergy sufferers — these pooches shed a lot! If you have plenty of space at home, then this crossbreed should fit right in. For folks who like to stay active, this Anatolian Shepherd Mix should be a perfect companion. Anatolian Shepherd Great Dane Mix Image from Instagram: indyruerue When you mix a gentle giant Great Dane with a similarly large canine as an Anatolian Shepherd, you can expect to have a massive lap dog. They are highly affectionate canines that are always up for cuddle times. But as with all large dogs, this crossbreed does not have a very long life expectancy. But they do shed excessively, which may be too much for folks who like to keep their furniture fur-free. Like other Anatolian Shepherd Mixes, this fluffy mixed pooch is a classic brains and brawn fellow. They do well with families and singles but will require further supervision when playing with kids because of their humongous size. But as with all dogs with a protective nature, the Anatolian Shepherd Boxer Mix needs early socialization. Firm training with ample positive reinforcement is what you need to tame their stubborn nature while bringing out their best qualities. They may either have rough coats like an Anatolian or smooth like a Poodle. As for their coat colors, these can range from fawn to brindle and a wide variety of hues. These Anatolian Shepherd Poodle Mixes are independent and hardy creatures, which makes them great on the farm. Anatolian Shepherd Golden Mix Image from Instagram: karenfultzgreene Golden Retrievers are among the most well-loved dog breeds of all time, so no wonder dog fanciers have created this adorable Anatolian Shepherd Mix! Newbie owners or not, this crossbreed should fit right into your home. These dogs have an abundance of charm and good looks, too! The Anatolian Pyrenees Shepherd Mix is easy to train because of its inherent intelligence and desire to please its owners. They are also quite protective of their owners, so early socialization is a must for these big pups. Despite this, there is still a visible difference between the two dogs. The Kangal dog is widely known to be the larger version of the Anatolian Shepherd. Kangals are heavier and stockier than Anatolian Shepherds. Apart from their physique, these Kangal dogs have been around since A. On the other hand, Anatolian Shepherds have been around as early as B. They are also regarded for their protective nature and loyalty to owners. An Anatolian Shepherd Mix can typically grow up to lbs. Males have an average weight of to lbs and stand as tall as 29 inches. As for females, they are lighter at 80 to lbs and stand around 27 inches tall at the shoulder. Meet the English Mastiff and Anatolian Shepherd mix. This is an expected combination of purebred dogs since Anatolian Shepherds usually mix with larger dogs, preferably giants. I mean, an average Anatolian Shepherd will weigh up to pounds. Imagine breeding one with a male or a female Chihuahua. Appearance The English Mastiff usually weighs up to pounds. This makes him a good counterpart to Anatolian Shepherds. Their crossbreed puppies will be large dogs. The signature features that will help you recognize an Anatolian Mastiff is its medium-length coat in numerous cream shades, including brindle and white, as well as its blocky, mastiff-type head. Sure, they are big. Anatolian Mastiffs are actually pretty sweet and caring. They are as gentle as a dog of their size can be. After all, these are pretty big, heavy, and strong canines. Health Problems Mixed-breed dogs always come either incredibly healthy or feature numerous health issues. Surprisingly, strenuous workouts for these mixes are not recommended because they affect their skeletal system negatively. Just kidding… this is not a battle. This is what you get when you join forces. Of course, both Aussie Shepherd males and females are much smaller than our Anatolian Shepherd. But, these two have found a way to work it out despite their differences and origin countries. I mean Turkey is pretty far from Australia, and vice versa. It took some courage to breed contrasting breeds that are hard to find. Still, these two make adorable shepherd puppies. However, their coat color and type will resemble an Aussie. Also, a blue merle coat, just like with the Australian Shepherd , is possible. Overall, Australian Anatolian Shepherds are sweet-looking pups that are significantly larger than the Aussie mom or dad , but pretty impressive. Temperament Both parent breeds are pretty different in terms of their temperament. The Australian Shepherd is incredibly good with kids , but they do have a feisty, energetic personality. No wonder why people call them cowboys of the canine world. This hybrid pooch will be excellent for families, although you still need to worry about their size around small animals and kids. All in all, this is surprisingly one of the most spectacular Anatolian Shepherd mixes. Health Problems Besides the common health problems with large dog breeds, like hip and elbow dysplasia, this mix can be prone to suffering from some major conditions like epilepsy. Sadly, epilepsy is a hereditary condition that strikes many Aussie Shepherds. Anatolian Pyrenees: Great Pyrenees X Anatolian Shepherd Finally, two dog breeds that look a lot like each other… well, at least in terms of size and signature coat colors. This is the Anatolian Pyrenees — a cross between two truly magnificent dog breeds; our Anatolian Shepherd and the Great Pyrenees. Two dog breeds of a robust size have met and created one stunning dog… not a pup, but a big dog that will impress you with its size. Appearance Both parent breeds are exceptional working dogs. They are purposely bred to help with herding cattle, or serve as livestock guardians. Their big body size helped them a lot with these tasks. Also, their strength was a nice backup when they needed to protect their owner and the herd from wild animals. The Anatolian Pyrenees features a double coat inherited from both parents. Of course, they will shed like the Great Pyrenees. Unfortunately, shedding is a massive issue with these dogs, so keep that in mind. This crossbreed usually has a nice long muzzle, and floppy ears covered in medium-length hair. Temperament Everything is big with the Anatolian Pyrenees, especially their heart. Yes, you can definitely call them gentle giants. These dogs are family-oriented, sweet, and caring. Most importantly, they will put your safety first, and defend you from any possible threat. This may be a bit problematic, especially around unknown people. Their territorial behavior as well as their overprotectiveness is something that needs to be addressed through early socialization and obedience training. Health Problems Giant dog breeds will always have issues with their mobility. For example, your Anatolian Pyrenees puppy may inherit cataracts, or conditions called entropion or ectropion. Also, bloat is a constant threat with giant dog breeds. Too much air will cause their belly to twist, which can be lethal. Of all Anatolian Shepherd mixes, this is definitely the one with the most popular mom or dad, the German Shepherd. German Shepherds are not as tall as you might think. They are longer dogs, with a slouched back and long tail. However, the Anatolian Shepherd has a more bulky build, and they appear larger than they really are. The crossbreed puppies of these two will be somewhere around pounds. They will have a muscular body build covered in short hair. Lots of coat colors are possible, but all of them are German Shepherd colors. One of the most popular colors will be sable, just like the sable GSD. So, you will have your hands full with brushing them. Temperament A lot of people believe German Shepherds are aggressive. No dog, including a German Shepherd, is aggressive by default. But, other than that, German Anatolian Shepherds make fine crossbreed pups. They can live with families since they are extremely loyal and look for the alpha in their humans. Health Problems If you want your German Anatolian Shepherd to reach its maximum lifespan, then you should take him to regular vet visits. But, most importantly, buy from a breeder who guarantees the puppies are free of any hereditary disease. This is another one of the Anatolian Shepherd mixes that is prone to dysplasia and bloat. However, I have to add hemophilia to the list since German Shepherds often carry this severe condition. Anatolian Shepherd Great Dane Mix Photo from: purpletabs I just love it when breeders mix dogs of similar size, appearance, and temperament. Do you want to know why? Will it be behavior or will it be some unusual appearance traits? The truth is, you never know with crossbreed dogs. Sometimes, these dogs take after one side more than the other. Even though they may look like aggressive hounds, Great Danes are not really dangerous. I feel really bad for Great Dane boys and girls because they have to take all the unnecessary bad publicity. Great Danes are known for their gentle approach, especially to children. But, this handsome boy is more than just beauty. Temperament Great Dane Anatolian Shepherd mixed puppies are blessed to be quite intelligent. Besides their cuddly behavior, these dogs tend to be a bit territorial. Brace yourself for an endless amount of big, wet dog kisses as the Great Anatolian loves sharing the love! They grow fast, and thus, reach maturity faster. Consequently, nature decided they should live a shorter life. One of the most common health problems that might affect your Great Anatolian Shepherd will be inherited from the Great Dane side of the family. See, I told you these dogs have huge hearts! Whether your breeder uses English or American Goldens , the end result will still be a lovely Golden Anatolian. I do have to congratulate whoever remembered to breed Goldens and Anatolians together. As you can tell, the signature color of this crossbreed puppy is gold or cream, just like the Golden parent. There is a significant difference in terms of the size of the two parent breeds. You can expect your Golden Anatolian to weigh up to 80 pounds. Of course, when it comes to male vs female Goldens , females are smaller. This is still a pretty big dog that will make you feel safe around him. The facial expression usually takes after the Golden. There is no signature black mask as there is with Anatolians. Probably the only thing most Golden Anatolians inherit from the Turkish side of the family is their size and their dense coat. Speaking of coats… yes, you will need to brush it all the time because both the Anatolian Shepherd and the Golden Retriever shed quite a lot, and are not hypoallergenic. The reason is pretty simple! The easy-going temperament that both dogs have will make Golden Anatolian Shepherd puppies adaptable to any lifestyle. These dogs will never show you aggression because Golden retrievers are not aggressive , and neither are Anatolian Shepherds. All in all, this cross from popular dogs is threatening to become the favorite among all Anatolian Shepherd mixes as well as other family-oriented dogs. I suggest you take your pup to see the vet anytime you can. They are not aware that Pitbull boys and girls are one of the sweetest dog breeds on Earth! Well, if they are scared of Pitbulls and their so-called aggression, wait until they see this giant Anatolian Shepherd Pitbull mix! Yes, it does look like an enlarged Pitbull. This is one of those Anatolian Shepherd mixes that looks like the perfect blend of both parents. Appearance For starters, this mix is classified as a big dog that can grow up to around 80 pounds or so. Keep in mind that Pitbulls are small and muscular. They rarely go over 70 pounds. When I said this is an enlarged Pitbull, I really meant that. Their size may be after the Turkish side of the family, but their appearance is pure Pitbull. The facial expression, along with floppy ears, are completely from the Pitbull side. This handsome boy even features the same colors as the average Pitbull. I want to show you the other side of the Anatolian Pittie. The Anatolian Pittie should be a brave dog with moderate exercise needs. Use dog cosmetics for sensitive skin when bathing them. Also, thanks to the Pitbull mom or dad, your Anatolian Pittie may suffer from degenerative myelopathy. Better contact a reputable breeder before you decide to bring an Anatolian Pittie home. The Anatolian Husky is a cross between our dog of the day, the Anatolian Shepherd, and the very popular Siberian Husky mom or dad. Anatolian Shepherds are calm dogs, but Siberian Huskies are not. This is one of the Anatolian Shepherd mixes that will truly be unique in every possible way. Appearance Anatolian Huskies might not be as big as their parents from Anatolia, but they certainly look a lot like their parents from Siberia. But, still, coat color combinations may vary. The same goes for eye colors. Huskies have wonderfully-colored eyes. Sometimes, they even have a condition called heterochromia. This means that the Anatolian Huskies may inherit these genes and also have the same condition. Temperament Since Huskies are not aggressive and Anatolian Shepherds are as calm as they can be, you can expect their puppies to exhibit the same behavior. The Anatolian Husky should be a happy pooch that loves playing around. I do have to warn you about Huskies and their stubbornness, so keep an eye on them during dog training lessons. But, what is PRA? It should be treated in time; otherwise, your dog might go blind. Have him checked by the vet regularly, and also buy from a breeder that submits puppies in early puppyhood to PRA tests. Anatolian Shepherd X Rottweiler Photo from: bwalkingd When it comes to breeding exceptional working dogs, the Anatolian Rottweiler is an absolute champion. This pup is very proud of his hard-working parents, especially the Rottweiler. Both parent breeds were purposely bred to help people. Anatolian Shepherds are one of the finest examples of Shepherd dogs, while Rottweilers mostly serve as protection and for pulling heavy weight. Today, the Rottweiler parent is under a lot of stigma. Rotties are not dangerous! Appearance The appearance of your Anatolian Rottie will depend on several factors. First, do you use American or German Rotties in the breeding process? Is your Rottie a short-haired or a long-haired Rottie? For example, the long-haired Rottie, when mixed with the Anatolian Shepherd, will result in puppies with medium-length hair. They will be a bit scruffy-looking and fluffy, but that only helps with their cuteness factor. As for the coat colors, expect any color from the parent breeds. Usually, Rotties are black and tan, so a shade of tan with black markings is quite possible with these dogs. Temperament Rottweilers are good with kids. Anatolian Shepherds are good with kids. Anatolian Rottweilers will be good with kids, too! They always want to make sure their owner is not in danger, and that everyone feels secure around them. Anatolian Rotties are also sharp creatures, and training them should not cause any complications. They will master commands easily, and they love to see their owner pleased. Health Problems Sadly, Rottweilers are usually prone to some conditions that they may transfer to their offspring. These health issues can be avoided if you pick the right breeder. But, the Akita and the Anatolian Shepherd is definitely an exception. There are only a handful of good Akita breeders in the States , not to mention Anatolian breeders. What would an average Akita and Anatolian Shepherd mix look like? I reckon you understand why using an Anatolian Shepherd instead of a bigger version, like a Kangal, is in order here, right? The Anatolian Akita should weigh around pounds since the Turkish side of the family is big, as well as the Akita mom or dad. In this case, the battle of the genes goes to the Anatolian Shepherd. Temperament Generally speaking, Anatolian Akitas will be friendly and easy-going, but they will come with one downside. These dogs can be quite stubborn, just like the Akita. Health Problems The Anatolian Akita is fairly healthy, but he also can suffer from some severe health conditions. Never forget about hip dysplasia, PRA, and hypothyroidism. Photo from: karenfultzgreene Of course, we had to include one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. Lots of families across the United States love Labrador Retrievers. These dogs are spectacular family dogs that are as loyal as a German Shepherd and as sweet as a Great Dane. But, what happens when you mix these dogs with our Anatolian Shepherd? You get an even better dog breed for families. The Anatolian Retriever is a combination of a sheepdog and a retriever. This means these puppies will have a strong hunting and herding drive. They will be excellent at catching all sorts of prey, which can be important for people who enjoy hunting with dogs. Unfortunately, since the Lab sheds , as well as the Anatolian Shepherd, the puppies will also be big shedders, so this might not be the best puppy for allergic people. These hybrid pups come in all sorts of light shades, i. Ever heard of the white Labrador? Now you will! Also, other Labrador colors are possible, but you never know what your Anatolian Retriever puppy might look like. Think of this Anatolian Shepherd mix as an enlarged Labrador. It will look just like the Lab, but its body size will be similar to the Anatolian Shepherd. Temperament What can I say about one of the kindest Anatolian Shepherd mixes? Not much other than good things, right? Well, the Anatolian Retriever is absolutely wonderful and friendly. Anatolian Retrievers are alert and ready to react within seconds. Health Problems Other than common health issues with these mixed-breed puppies, you must watch out for obesity. Both parent breeds are extremely prone to obesity. Control what they eat and how much of it they eat. Your Anatolian Retriever will need premium dog food packed with proteins to maintain a healthy body weight. Whether you breed Anatolian Shepherds with American or European Boxers , the end result will be one unusual pup with a fun twist. But, what do you get when you mix them with Anatolian Shepherds? An Anatolian Boxer, of course! How about we check out what an Anatolian Boxer might look like, as well as what kind of health issues he might face? Usually, those are shades of cream, beige, fawn, and brown. As you can imagine, Anatolian Boxers will be big, handsome guys and girls. They will have a rather short coat that will still need regular brushing. Temperament Just think of the Anatolian Boxer as your fun best friend that will try to make you laugh when you feel down. These dogs have a friendly personality that will amaze you with pawsitivity. Health Problems Sadly, Boxers are one of those dogs that are highly prone to cancers. And, yes — they can transfer those genes to further offspring. Your Anatolian Boxer might suffer from brain tumors or mast cell tumors. Please, have your Anatolian Boxer checked by the vet regularly to prevent further health complications. This is the Anadoodle or the Anatolian Shepherd and Poodle-mixed puppy. The Anadoodle is a lot like many other doodles we know, i. But, what sets them apart from the already-famous Doodles? This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest Doodle ever. Appearance The Anadoodle is simply gorgeous. To be honest, I was quite surprised to see an Anatolian mixed with a dog like the Poodle. Of course, it was not a standard Poodle — the biggest of them all. What sets them apart from Poodles is their muzzle shape. Since Poodles are amazing water dogs that are used for hunting, expect these crossbreed pups to work twice as hard as their parents. So, expect some drama from your Anadoodle, just because they feel a bit bored. You might come home to a destroyed living room. I can only add that these pups share the most common health issues with the previous pups. When you breed two extremely large dog breeds, the end result can only be one magnificent pup. And, the Anatolian Bernese is definitely magnificent. Generally speaking, all Anatolian Shepherd mixes are truly great. But, I find that these mixes can reach their full potential when bred with large or giant dog breeds. Appearance The Anatolian Bernese is not a mix that can easily be found. Those people who have been blessed to have an Anatolian Bernese or to have spent some time with them know these pups are a lovely mashup of both parents. Of course, one Anatolian Bernese might look a lot like the Bernese parent, while the other may resemble the Anatolian Shepherd more. This is absolutely natural. What you should know is that most Anatolian Bernese dogs feature the popular tricolor coat, just like the Bernese. These dogs are big, chunky, and have a somewhat regal posture. They rarely show aggression at all! In fact, the Bernese parent is known to be exceptionally good around kids. These are huge dogs that still need love and care. Please, make sure your dog gets checked regularly so he can live a long and fulfilling life. Newfoundland X Anatolian Shepherd Photo from: taunstewart When it comes to breeding Newfoundland dogs and Anatolian Shepherds, I recommend that you or your breeder go with the larger Anatolian Shepherd, called the Kangal. The American Kennel Club says that these two are the same dogs, but the Kangal is slightly bigger. There are really no differences in their origin or behavior whatsoever. Newfoundlands are one of the biggest dogs in the world. And, yes… they need a lot of dog food to keep them functioning properly. Just imagine a puppy from a Newfie and a Kangal. Newfoundland Kangals will, of course, be big. Their muscular body will be covered in a medium-length coat. The coat color may lean over to one or the other side, meaning that inheriting all colors from the parents is quite possible. I believe the Kangal will find its pattern soon. Temperament Newfs are gentler than you might think. The same goes for the Kangal. You can expect devoted pups from these two dog breeds. Health Problems Whenever it comes to the health problems of giant dogs, I always get a bit sad. Dogs as big as a Newf or a Kangal have a shorter lifespan, i. As always, watch out for bloat and dysplasia, but also Subaortic Stenosis. Conclusion So, after going through all these Anatolian Shepherd mixes, which one is your favorite? As you already know, the Anatolian Shepherd mixes are usually a result of breeding large or giant dog breeds, just like our buddy from Anatolia. Or, what about Aussie Shepherd and Anatolian Shepherd mixes? I would be careful with who I trust with my Anatolian Shepherd mixed puppy. Find a breeder who takes good care of the parents and their litters. Make sure they test for various health conditions. I truly believe all these Anatolian Shepherd mixes are wonderful dogs. The most important thing is that none of these dogs are aggressive by default. Post navigation. Top Anatolian Shepherd mixes The Purebred Anatolian Shepherd The Anatolian Shepherd is a large breed with sandy colored fur along her body, a dark muzzle and dark eyes. She has a thick, double coat; dark, floppy ears; and weighs anywhere from 80 to pounds. A working dog through and through, the Anatolian Shepherd is best suited for experienced dog owners. This is a dog who is a free thinker. While fiercely loyal and loving to her family, she can be wary of strangers and highly protective of those she feels she must keep safe. Large, muscular and dominant, the Anatolian Shepherd is not a dog to be taken lightly. Her protective, independent nature is instinctual and was bred into her for centuries. These traits could very well be passed on to her offspring, even if that offspring is a mix. Anatolian Shepherd Mixes Crossbreeding is an ancient practice. While controversial, many breeders today crossbreed dogs for a number of different reasons. In ancient times, crossbreeding was a way for people to create their idea of the perfect dog. Hunters often crossed breeds who were stealthy, had excellent noses and unique voices. Shepherds needed dogs who were fearless, intelligent and so on. Most of the breeds we know and love today came about by way of crossbreeding. However, it takes generations and years of refining before a crossbreed becomes a purebred. Crossbreeds vs Purebred Dogs People want to combine the desired traits of two different dogs into one. However, this is not always a successful endeavor and can be somewhat hit or miss. As we said, it takes generations of crossbreeding and refining for a crossbreed to be accepted as a purebred. Many breeders and dog enthusiasts may opt to cross the Anatolian Shepherd with certain breeds to enhance her intelligence. Of course, there could be many other reasons as well. It all depends on what each individual breeder wants to accomplish with that crossbreed. Combining the German Shepherd with the Anatolian Shepherd will likely leave you with a dog who is pretty similar to each of purebred parents. There is one exception—the German Shepherd requires a lot of exercise while the Anatolian Shepherd does not. Anatolian Shepherds are calm. Exercising their brains tends to be more of a necessity than making sure they are running up a mountainside. Still, the good news is that both breeds will do well with one or two long walks a day and plenty of opportunity for backyard play. You should also note that training and early socialization beginning in puppyhood is a must for this protective and intelligent crossbreed. The Anatolian Shepherd is already a large dog, and crossing him with a Great Pyrenees will only make him larger. Majestic, beautiful and intelligent, the Great Pyrenees is a fabulous dog for those who are ready to conquer all that fur. Luckily, crossing these two breeds will likely lead to an intelligent and calm crossbreed. The Great Pyrenees, as the Anatolian Shepherd, is protective and bred to guard his flock. Again, early socialization and obedience training will be a necessity for this hybrid to ensure he grows up well-adjusted and well-mannered. Nothing but massive lap dogs, Great Danes are beloved among many dog owners looking for a sweet, clumsy horse of a canine. Crossing the Anatolian Shepherd and Great Dane could give you a number of different scenarios. For the most part, it is likely your crossbreed will be smart and big. And while we adore Great Danes, it should be noted that they have a very short life expectancy. They can also be prone to a number of health issues due to their massive size. Both of these qualities could be passed on to their crossbreed offspring. They are intelligent, loving and make perfect family pets for those with young children. However, Golden Retrievers are extremely active and much more high-energy than an Anatolian Shepherd. They are also much less wary of strangers and not nearly as protective. Crossing a loyal, calm and protective Anatolian Shepherd with a playful, friendly and curious Golden Retriever may not result in the perfect mix. For this reason, it is very important that you utilize early socialization and obedience training with this mix. However, she is like the Anatolian Shepherd in the way that she was built for work. Still, she is not as much of a workaholic as the Anatolian Shepherd. Huskies are better listeners than the Anatolian Shepherd. They are also more eager to please their people. Huskies require much more exercise and enjoy running. Crossing this breed will likely lead to an intelligent and loving hybrid. However, whether she is friendly or hesitant with strangers will depend on her genetic makeup as well as puppyhood socialization. They make excellent family companions and are super eager to please. All she wants to do is be with her family and make them proud. The Anatolian Shepherd, on the other hand, would prefer to make her own decisions and think for herself. She is not so much concerned with learning to sit and stay. So, crossing these two could leave you with a few different results. If your crossbreed takes after her Labrador parent, you can expect her to be outgoing, friendly, high-energy and eager to please. However, if she takes after her Anatolian Shepherd parent, prepare for a dog who is loyal and loving. She may also be aloof with strangers and stubborn when it comes to learning commands. Or, this crossbreed could be somewhere in between. Combining her with the large, brainy Anatolian Shepherd will surely lead to one of the most intelligent and dignified crossbreeds on our list. Her appearance depends on which purebred parent she takes after most, but she will likely be a heavy shedder who requires regular brushing. However, the Aussie is outgoing and exuberant while the Anatolian Shepherd is not. A cross between the Australian Shepherd and the Anatolian Shepherd could give you a dog that is somewhere in between these personalities. Or, she could be more like one parent over the other. It all depends. Casey needs a caretaker or foster! Won't you consider helping her get a new start? Are you looking for a female companion? One that loves kids? Good news! Your search is over. I'm the gal for you. I am house-trained and do not enjoy being confined in a crate or small space. I would do best in a home that will allow me freedom and preferably a home with another big dog like me so that I can have companionship. In my previous life, I lived in a home with 7 cats and young children so I would definitely do well in that type of environment again. I am a smart girl. I know several commands and would love to learn more. I enjoy swimming, cuddling, playing tug-of-war with a doggy friend and playing with my humans, especially children. Children are my favorite companions and big dogs are fun too. I'm not overly fond of little dogs. I'm a big girl but very gentle. My foster mom likes to tell the story about how I whined at the door to her daughter's room when I was first rescued. When my foster mom opened the door, I jumped on the bed and dug my nose under the covers until I found her daughter and then I gave her kisses, cuddled up next to her and went to sleep. I was so happy to be safe. If you can offer me a loving home where I can be free to roam and have children and maybe another big dog to play with, then I'm your gal. Carpe diem! Let's "seize the day" and start our lives together. About Casey. Both of these dogs can be friendly but personalities differ, so you never know. They are sometimes called the Anatolian Karabash Dog or Kangal It is a large dog that was bred to guard livestock from the typical predators of Wolves, Lions, Bears, etc. It is thought that this breed is as old as 6, years old. They are extremely patient and gentle, especially with children. They are high energy dogs and need a lot of exercise. Because of their strength and courage, Boxers have a wide use in the military and the police, as well as search-and-rescue work. When specifically trained for guard work, Boxers are excellent watchdogs and will restrain an intruder in the same manner as a Mastiff. Boxers also excel in obedience, agility, and schutzhund a demanding three-phase competition event that tests the dog's tracking, obedience, and protection abilities. Boxers should not be left outdoors for extended periods of time. Their short nose doesn't cool hot air efficiently in the summer, and their short coat doesn't keep them warm in the winter. However, both parents must have the recessive gene for solid black to appear in the litter. It can happen. The second way solid Black German Shepherd puppies are produced is by mating two solid blacks. This mix can only produce a solid black litter. The color of this dog does not affect its temperament. Although multiple color variations of GSD exist, black German shepherd puppies are one of the most popular thanks to their sleek, handsome coats. The pitch-black color that gives these dogs their magnificent appearance is the result of a naturally occurring recessive gene. This means black German shepherds have naturally existed for quite some time, but they are much rarer than their black and tan counterparts. When properly socialized from a young age, black German shepherds make wonderful companions and excellent guard dogs. These large doggos are best suited for experienced owners with large homes and fenced-in yards. While they may look completely different, these dogs are the same breed, and the black variety is recognized in the official GSD standard. While purebred black German shepherd puppies can compete in dog shows, they are often overlooked in favor of the classic black and tan look. These dogs were later used by the military as messengers, sentries, guards, supply carriers, and rescuers. Black shepherds tend to be slightly larger than the average GSD, and most have a straighter back. When it comes to features, you can expect your black German shepherd puppy to have a clear-cut head, pointed ears, a long snout, almond-shaped brown eyes, and a black nose. Males are usually around 24 to 26 inches tall at the withers and weigh between 65 and 90 pounds. Female dogs are typically smaller and stand between 22 and 24 inches tall and weigh from 50 to 75 pounds. The average GSD can be black and tan, black, sable, grey, red and black, or even black and silver. In German shepherds, black coats are caused by a recessive gene. This means a puppy needs to inherit two copies of a recessive gene from both mom and dad in order to have a black coat. For example, if you mate two sable German shepherds that carry this recessive gene, a quarter of their puppies will have a black coat. However, if you breed a black German shepherd with a sable dog that carries the gene, roughly half of their litter will be black in color. Breeding two black German shepherds is the only guaranteed way to produce a litter of completely black puppies. Bear in mind that all German shepherd puppies change color as they grow. Coat Texture These pitch-black canines have a medium-to-long double coat. The coat can be either straight or wavy and will shed all year long and go through two blowouts — once in the spring and again in the fall. Caring For Black German Shepherd Puppy While they are not harder to care for than standard German shepherds, your black GSD still needs a lot of love, care, and affection to stay happy and thrive. It is crucial to design a consistent care routine for your pooch and keep track of regular veterinary check ups to detect any health problems early on. When creating a care routine for your GSD puppy, pay special attention to the following factors: Exercise The black German shepherd is a highly energetic dog that needs at least one hour of intense exercise every day. Enrolling your puppy in agility classes is a great way to keep them exercised and can be a fun and entertaining experience for them. Games such as fetch, flyball, Frisbee, tug-of-war, and hide and seek are also great options and will keep your pooch exercised and entertained. Intellectual Stimulation Black German shepherds are highly intelligent dogs that can easily become bored, frustrated, and destructive when not mentally stimulated. A bored or anxious black shepherd can cause serious damage to your home and belongings. Companionship Loyal and devoted to a fault, black GSD puppies make superb family dogs and companions. They form strong bonds with their people and are happiest when they can spend time and interact with their families. While they are large and intimidating at first, these pups are loving companions that crave affection and attention. Black German shepherd puppies need company and are best suited for homes where someone is around all day. Grooming The black German shepherd is a high-maintenance dog when it comes to grooming. If your pup has a medium-length coat, brush them two to three times a week to remove loose hair and keep their coat in pristine condition. Use a de-shedding tool to remove loose hair and minimize the shedding during spring and fall. To further reduce shedding, bathe your GSD with an anti-shed dog shampoo every two months or as necessary. You should also brush their teeth at least three times a week and trim their nails every other month. Diet An ideal diet for black German shepherds should be formulated for a large-sized dog with high energy. When choosing the best food for your pooch, make sure it contains higher levels of protein, a moderate amount of fat, and easily digestible complex carbohydrates. Keep in mind that black German shepherd puppies grow extremely quickly between the ages of four and seven months, which makes them susceptible to bone disorders. Feed your pup high-quality, low-calorie food to prevent them from growing too rapidly. Known Health Problems As a breed, German shepherds are considered generally healthy. Black GSD and all other German shepherds are prone to the same health problems, including: Hip Dysplasia: This is a hereditary condition that causes malformation of a hip joint. Affected dogs may or may not show clinical signs of this condition, but in most cases, dogs experience pain and lameness in one or both hind legs. Elbow Dysplasia: This is another hereditary condition commonly seen in large breeds. This condition is caused by varying growth rates of the three bones that make up the elbow, resulting in joint looseness. Gastric Dilatation Volvulus: Also known as bloat, GDV is a life-threatening condition that affects large, deep-chested dog breeds, particularly if they are fed one large meal a day, eat rapidly, drink a lot of water after eating, or exercise just after a meal. Degenerative Myelopathy: This is a progressive disease of the spinal cord. This condition affects the part of the cord that gives information to the brain regarding the rear legs. Lifespan The black German shepherd has an average lifespan of around 9 to 13 years. With proper care and regular veterinary checkups, these pups can reach their senior years in good health. Training A Black German Shepherd Puppy Black German shepherd puppies are highly intelligent and obedient, which makes them very easy to train. These pups are fairly easy to housetrain, and they also learn obedience commands after just a few repetitions. Like all other dogs, black German shepherds thrive on reward-based training and a lot of praise. Positive reinforcement training techniques are highly effective for training puppies and adult dogs and are much more reliable than dominance training. Besides training, you should start socializing your black GSD puppy as soon as you bring them home. Since these pups are naturally aloof with strangers, early socialization is essential and will help your dog to become friendlier to other people. Try to expose your puppy to as many people, places, situations, animals, children, and sounds from a young age to help them grow into an outgoing dog. Properly trained and socialized black German shepherd pups make wonderful companions to people of all ages and families with children. Due to their large size and highly energetic nature, these dogs are best suited for large homes with spacious, fenced yards. While they can live outdoors, black shepherds should primarily be kept indoors so they can regularly interact with their people and stay close to them. In addition, because of their high social needs and potential to develop separation anxiety, they thrive in families where someone is at home often and able to keep them company. However, when compared to other varieties, black German shepherds are quite rare and hard to come by. Finding a reputable breeder might require a bit of research on your part, but all the extra effort will pay off in the long run. This is not due to crossbreeding; the gene for completely black coats is carried by purebred German Shepherds. It is much rarer than the usual coloration, though. They have the same build and grow to be the about same size as a purebred German Shepherd. Males usually weight between 65 to 90 pounds, while females are 50 to 75 pounds. These are considered medium-to-large dogs, so consider whether you have the space before adopting one. Their height is around inches. This is correct for both males and females. Their coat is generally the same besides for their different in coloration. Their double-coat helps them stay clean and warm. As working dogs, these canines are built to work, and it shows. This coat color is accepted by the AKC. It is also not the result of crossbreeding, as some misinformation may state. Instead, it is simply a rare color that very few German Shepherds end up with. It only showed up recently and is sometimes encouraged through selective breeding. While the gene for a solid black coat was once though to be recessive, many people now consider it to be dominant. These dogs always have dark-colored eyes. Blue eyes are extremely rare and usually a sign that a dog has other breeds in his pedigree, such as Huskies. Other than the color, the body of black German Shepherds looks just like his black and tan cousins. As in all German Shepherds, the ears are typically erect, though floppy ears in adult can be seen occasionally. History By , the generalized herding dogs of Europe had split themselves into a few different distinctive breeds, including the German Shepherd. During the s, there was an attempt to standardize dog breeds and promote traits that encouraged sheep herding, including speed, strength, endurance, and intelligence. However, varieties still existed from place to place. Slight breeding difference had led to slightly different shepherds. During the industrial revolution, the need for sheepdogs decreased along with the predator population. Luckily, by this point, people were already recognizing the intelligence and ability of the previous herding dogs. From this dog the breed standard grew. In just a few generations, the German Shepherd was one of the most populous in the world. Honrand fathered many puppies. Nearly all German Shepherds today are descended from him. There was quite a bit of inbreeding that occurred to produce the German Shepherd breed we know today. The Black German Shepherd has likely existed to some extent since the breed was produced. However, many dogs do not carry the completely black gene. Many completely black German Shepherds in the past were likely culled at birth due to the defect. Today, the gene is seeing a reoccurrence. Personality and Temperament The German Shepherd is often considered to be an aggressive dog. However, this is not completely true. They do have significant protective instincts, as they were originally bred to guard flocks of sheep. For instance, the German Shepherd has a bite force of over 1, newtons. But there are several dogs that rank around this as well, including the Rottweiler, Pit Bull, and Labrador Retriever. Most dogs at about this size are going to have a similar bite strength. German Shepherds are considered to be moderately active. They need just about as much exercise as dogs of a similar size. This breed is well-known for being heavily devoted to their people and easy to train. When trained properly, they will absolutely listen. However, they do have innate protective instincts. If you want to dog that is going to be protective of their family, this is a great choice. These canines do need extensive socialization starting at a young age, though. Otherwise, they can become a bit too protective of their family and territory. These canines are not the friendliest. They are people-oriented, but not with strangers. They tend to be quite unsure with strangers. At best, they usually ignore them completely. Other times, they may be obviously uncomfortable. German Shepherds have high prey drive. On the one hand that means that you can easily motivate them with a ball or tug toy. On the other hand, it requires a lot of supervision for owners that have small dogs or cats in addition to their shepherd. While your dog might not outright try to fight with a cat or smaller dog, he could even accidentally hurt them during play. They are extremely intelligent and devoted to their owners. Unlike some dog breeds, they will listen to their owners in most real-life situations. They can learn a variety of different commands very easily and will actually do them when asked. However, these dogs do need the training. Without it, they can be overly protective and even potentially dangerous. Their ease of training does make fulfilling this need quite easy, though. We do recommend puppy classes starting at a very young age. These classes provide the extra socialization that your dog needs, as well as allows you to jumpstart their training. We only recommend private classes for dogs that are too reactive around strangers and other dogs to thrive in a group class. Usually, only German Shepherds who were not properly socialized as puppies will fit into this category. If you adopt an older German Shepherd that seems in need of socialization, we recommend taking private classes with an experienced trainer. You can work your dog through some basic commands and then work on socializing them with safe people and dogs. The trainer should be able to help you in this regard. The German Shepherd is a more active breed, and completely black German Shepherds are not different. While there are more active dog breeds out there, these canines are best for those that are quite active. They need at least two medium-to-long walks per day. Puppies will likely need some extra play sessions as well. Health and Care German Shepherds are pretty healthy as far as purebred dogs come. However, they are prone to some health problems. Many of these are due to the inbreeding that occurred early in the breed, which made some previously rare traits more common. Black German Shepherds are not known to have any more health problems than their black-and-tan cousins. Their coat coloration is not associated with any particular health issues or anything of that sort. It is important to purchase these dogs from a qualified breeder, as they tend to perform plenty of health testing on any dog they plan on breeding. This helps them recognize health problems and pick only the healthiest dogs possible for producing litters. We do recommend purchasing a German Shepherd that was bred as a working dog — not one produced as a show dog. These two lines of dogs are somewhat distinct as they have been bred for two very different purposes. Show dogs tend to confirm to an extreme extent to the breed standard, which increase the amount of health problems they develop. On the other hand, working dogs were bred with practicality in mind. Many German Shepherds have hip and elbow dysplasia. This disease occurs when the ball and socket of the joint do not line up correctly, leading to excess wear-and-tear. Eventually, this cause arthritis-like symptoms, but at a much earlier age than arthritis typically shows up. Usually, this damage occurs during puppyhood when the dog is growing, but they may not show symptoms until a few years later. There are a few things pet owners can do to reduce the chance of hip and elbow dysplasia in their German Shepherd. Many of these dogs are also affected by degenerative spinal stenosis. However, this study had a notably small sample size, so it may not be entirely accurate. On a good note, German Shepherds are actually less likely to get ear infections than other dogs. Degenerative myelopathy occurs often enough in German Shepherds that they are likely predispositioned to it. This test is very expensive, so many breeders perform it on their dogs before breeding as well as on the puppies after they are born. Once the test is used regularly, it becomes very easy to remove it from the breed. Von Willebrand disease also occurs at a higher level in German Shepherds than in the normal dog population. It is likely that they are genetically predispositioned to it. Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency occurs in German Shepherds as well. This condition is usually treated with medication and pancreatic supplements. It is most likely genetic, so health testing and keeping track of pedigrees is important to eliminating it in the breed. Medium-coated dogs will only need brush two to three times a week. Long coats will need combed through at least once a day to prevent mats. Because of their double coat, dogs of all coat types will shed profusely. Do not adopt a black German Shepherd unless you can deal with a lot of extra hair. Even if you brush your dog daily, they will still shed everywhere. Usually, this occurs in the spring and fall, but it can depend on your local climate. Shedding is also tied to hormones — not just the weather. There is little you can do to reduce the overall amount of shedding your dog does. However, anti-shedding shampoos and a high-quality diet can help. It is usually not too difficult to find a normal German Shepherd breeder somewhere near you. However, not all breeders produce black dogs. Most will also be significantly more expensive than a black-and-tan German Shepherd due to their rarity. Many people want a black German Shepherd, which means that you often have to be prepared to pay a bit extra. However, this is still much cheaper than you might expect for a large dog. As a common breed, they are usually cheaper than most. It may be tempting to cut corners and purchase a cheaper puppy. However, this is not recommended, especially when it comes to German Shepherds. These puppies need socialized from the moment they are born. Often, breeders put in this time and effort. We highly recommend only purchasing puppies form very experienced breeders. Otherwise, you may end up with an unsocialized puppy and a troublesome temperament. You should always ask about the pedigree of the parents, as well as the health testing the breeder has done. Ask to see the parents if at all possible. Sometimes, the father will be located somewhere else, so only the mother will be at the breeder. In this case, it is usually fine to just see the mother. You can tell a lot about a breeder form how they keep the mother and the puppies, so be absolutely sure to ask to see their living conditions. The parents should be AKC registered, so you should ask for registration. But AKC registration does not mean that the dog is high-quality. Every German Shepherd can be registered — even those with no health testing. Preferably, you should have owned at least one dog before. It is recommended that you have some experience with more active dogs, as well. These dogs are quite active and tend to be high-energy. Without the appropriate amount of exercise, they can easily become destructive. In fact, most of the destructive behavior associated with a German Shepherd is due to a lack of stimulation. German Shepherds require extensive training as well, so it is best if they have a handler that has previously trained dogs. They will take up a few hours a day as puppies and require as much as an hour or two of exercise alone. Many of these canines are more expensive than their black-and-tan counterparts. However, they have won the hearts of many pet owners. It will often take you a little bit before you locate a completely black puppy, so be prepared to sit on a few waiting lists. Despite their unusual colorations, these dogs are very similar to all other German Shepherds. They have the same temperament and work great as guard dogs. You have to prepare to train and socialize them properly. They require quite a bit more work than other breeds, but it is absolutely worth it in the end. We recommend these dogs for serious dog owners who have previously owned dogs. German Shepherds are not for the casual dog owner. They need someone who can commit to their training and activity needs. Author: Kristin Kristin was born in Tennessee and currently lives there with her husband and children. The reason for this is diet plays a significant part in the health of Bulldogs, and a good diet should prevent many of the health conditions they can suffer from. French Bulldogs sometimes have problems absorbing nutrients from food, which can lead to a special sometimes costly diet or supplements. Firstly, I highly recommend avoiding any dry dog food containing wheat or cereals especially those with by-products of those grains. All Bulldogs tend to be affected more by bad diet, medications, and antibiotics than other breeds. Related: Recommended dog foods. This gets me to my next point. Supplements are well worth considering for this breed, especially when your budget prevents you buying an expensive premium dog food. Probiotics are a great idea as these will help your Bulldog digest their food far more effectively. Read the full guide on probiotics which will fill you in completely and give you recommendations. Health Concerns French Bulldogs are prone to a number of health conditions. This disorder is caused by one or more anatomical misformations including small nostrils, narrow trachea, everted laryngeal saccules air sacs , and an elongated soft palate that partially obstructs the airway. This disorder often gets worse during hot weather and makes Frenchies much more susceptible to heat stroke. Reproductive Problems Reproductive problems are more common than not in this breed. Breeding after five years of age is severely discouraged. Genetic Spinal Deformities Frenchies are prone to genetic spinal deformities such as hemivertebrae, a painful condition where the spinal cord is constricted by misformed vertebrae. Surgery to correct these deformities is expensive, forcing some owners to euthanise. Untreated hemivertebrae can result in paralysis, incontinence, and excruciating pain for the canine. Pulmonic Stenosis Pulmonic Stenosis or narrowing of the pulmonary artery is somewhat common with this breed and can lead to fatigue or collapse during vigorous exercise or in severe cases Congestive Heart Failure. Hip Dysplasia Hip Dysplasia is common in active Frenchies and can cause limping, pain, and immobility of the back legs. This disorder can be corrected with periacetabular osteotomy surgery or made more manageable with medication Retinal Dysplasia Retinal Dysplasia is a hereditary condition characterised by the malformation of the retina. This disorder causes vision impairment, though it is not progressive or life-threatening. Hypothyroidism Hypothyroidism also known as under-active thyroid usually presents itself in affected dogs around four years of age. This is usually not life-threatening but it can cause hair loss, weight gain, dull coats, and may require medication. Atopic Dermatitis Atopic Dermatitis also known as eczema is prevalent in this breed. Using hypoallergenic shampoos and bathing less frequently can help control the symptoms. Heat Stroke Heat stroke is extremely common with this breed, because of this French Bulldogs should never be left outside for extended periods during hot or humid weather. The steep prices are due to reproductive difficulties in the breed, causing most breeders to resort to artificial insemination. Natural birth is extremely dangerous for Frenchies, so C-sections are required, which makes breeding quite costly. Furthermore, there is a very small window of opportunity for the females, since it is unsafe for them to give birth after five years of age. This balm uses natural botanicals including organic grapeseed oil, hemp-seed oil, jojoba oil, and Vitamin E to ease the pain and moisturise affected areas. Often French Bulldogs will develop tear stains; a gentle sodium hydroxide-based stain remover product will work to diminish discoloration, while not agitating the skin. We like the Petpost Tear-Stain Remover products, just make sure you rinse any remaining product with water after cleansing. Frenchies require shampoos with a super-gentle formula to so as to not trigger skin issues, Earthbath Ultra Mild Puppy Shampoo is a top pick for breeders plus it smells like cherries! What do owners have to say about their Frenchie? These groups are also great for finding a reputable breeder highly recommended. If you have a Frenchie yourself, please tell us all about him in the comments section below! This breed can be pricey. Do not look for the cheapest Frenchie to buy. It will more than likely be poorly bred with the many issues listed above. Also, you cannot go cheap on their dog food. She grows tired super quick when out and about, sadly. Tegan loves coming across other dogs, but other dogs look at her sideways since she makes some weird dog noises. Those thinking of buying or adopting a Frenchie should make sure they can accommodate their physical limitations and are prepared to deal with the health risks associated with this breed. Be prepared to feed a good diet which is meat-based and avoid cheap grain-based kibbles. If you do take home a Frenchie, then make sure you stock up on designer mugs, sweaters, and everything you can think of with a Bulldog on it! Calling Aussie pet lovers — join the mailing list! He has been brought up in a loving home and socialized with our kids and now hes ready to join his new family for many cuddles and lots of kisses. Frenchies, as they're commonly known, are all eyes and ears with a large almost square head. The ear shape is unique in the dog world, and without the bat ear shape and set, you don't have a Frenchie. The other important breed characteristic is the short, undocked tail. French Bulldog temperament French Bulldogs are described as intelligent and courageous, however their wilful, stubborn nature can make them challenging to train. They require patience, repetition, and early socialization. They are playful and affectionate and their loyal, loving nature makes them a wonderful companion dog. They thrive on human companionship and are ideal for people that have time to devote to them. Their compact size and calm nature also makes them great indoor pets. Frenchies can easily live with other breeds provided the proper introductions are done. They are good watchdogs, apparently barking for good reason and not 'yappy' like some of the other smaller breeds. The breed is considered very reliable with, and protective of children. How much space and exercise does a French Bulldog need? Frenchies can live happily in a flat and have fairly minimal exercise needs, but do require daily walks, even short ones of around 15 minutes, to keep their weight down. French Bulldogs can't swim because of their stocky physique so care must be taken near swimming areas. French Bulldogs cannot live outdoors and precautions must be taken when exercising during hot or humid weather as they are prone to heat stress. French Bulldogs and grooming needs The French bulldog has only a single short coat that does not shed excessively and only needs occasional brushing. Ears should be cleaned regularly with a damp warm cloth and run a cotton ball around the edge of the canal. French Bulldogs do not naturally wear their nails down and will need their nails trimmed regularly to prevent splitting and tearing. How much can you expect to pay for a French Bulldog from a reputable, registered breeder? According to the ANKC, these breeders tend to exploit the premise of 'Exotic' and 'Rare Colours' by disregarding the breed standard and falsifying colour. When colour is the main and at times only reason for producing a litter, health can and is at times compromised. Does a higher price mean a better quality puppy? Quality to an owner should relate to the health and soundness of the puppy, whether for a pet or a show dog and proof of health testing should always be provided. How well you can talk to and relate to the breeder, both before and after purchasing the puppy, is also of high importance. Potential health issues in French Bulldogs Reputable breeders will ensure that their dogs and puppies are free of issues that french bulldogs can face so be sure to ask for proof that testing has been done for the potential health problems listed below. It should be noted that NONE of these tests are compulsory, but ethical breeders will do whatever tests are available to them to ensure they are breeding healthy, quality animals. The condition is associated with their face shape long soft palate and narrowing of the nostrils , everted saccules and an underdeveloped trachea. Dogs suffering from BOAS should never be used for breeding. Good breeders aim to reduce these traits by selectively breeding for good palates and open nostrils. Breeding with fully tested specimens who exhibit both phenotypical what we see and genotypical genetic makeup healthy traits, helps to ensure that the offspring inherit desirable healthy traits - including good breathing. Hemivertebrae — The French Bulldog has an average of hemivertebrae. These are misshapen vertebrae that can occasionally cause severe instability of the spinal cord. Testing is recommended to reduce the incidence of this occurring. French Bulldogs can also suffer from Hip Dysplasia which can also be tested for to reduce the incidence of unstable hips. French Bulldogs can also suffer from luxating or slipping patellas dislocating kneecaps. This usually requires surgical intervention to give the dog relief. Again, dogs with this condition should not be bred from. Heart conditions - Cardiomyopathy, heart murmurs and pulmonic stenosis are some of the conditions that can occur. Unfortunately, heart conditions are on the rise within the French Bulldog due to irresponsible breeders - for more information see Heart Health, The French Bulldog Club of Qld for more information. Hereditary Cataracts Called "juvenile cataracts" to differentiate them from cataracts associated with old age or degeneration. Juvenile cataracts appear at an early age and because they are usually inherited, can be picked up with DNA testing. Cystinuria Type 3 is a genetic defect in the kidney tubules that causes bladder stones in male French Bulldogs. Neutering is curative in dogs that are affected, but both males and females can be carriers and should be tested. Cystinuria is thought to have arrived in Australia recently via dogs and semen imported from Europe. Increasing numbers of Australian breeders are testing for cystinuria. It should be noted that a specific test is required to detect type 3 Cystinuria - the French Bulldog version of the defect. Standard DNA testing is not sufficient. French Bulldog general facts The French Bulldog is a small to medium domestic dog, around 30cm high at its shoulders, weighing roughly 11 female —.French Bulldog colour variations The only correct colours for the breed Brindle, Fawn, Pied are illustrated in the images provided in the gallery. Fawn — with or without a black mask, ideally fawn should be clean and clear. Brindle — a mixture of black and fawn hairs creating brindle patterning striping. Pied Pattern — White base with either brindle or fawn patches. Ideally, the white base should be clean and clear of ticking or spotting. For Profit breeders are asking very high prices for so called "rare" colours like blue, lilac, black and tan. When colour is the main and at times only reason for producing a litter, health can be compromised. Breed clubs world-wide are united in their concern about the irresponsible and reckless exploitation of French Bulldogs, particularly by those breeders who aim to produce rare colours. If you choose to buy a French Bulldog puppy for colour - ensure that prior to purchase you have proof of the correct and complete health testing of parents and the puppy - including certified radiographs of the spines and hips and DNA testing for all hereditary conditions. Shih poos are a cross between a shih tzu and a toy poodle. While some shih tzu breeders breed a poodle to a shih tzu to create first-generation shih poos, it's also common practice to breed shih poos to one another to create multigenerational dogs. As cross-breeds, shih poos are not an officially recognized breed, and there is no breed standard regarding appearance or temperament. Even shih poo puppies born to the same litter may take after one parent more than the other and appear vastly different in coat texture and coloring, says PetGuide. Shih poos fall in the small to tiny range, typically standing between eight and 18 inches at the withers and weighing anywhere from eight to 18 pounds. Their coat may be long, straight and silky like that of the shih tzu, shorter and curly like that of a poodle or it may fall somewhere in between. Despite the appearance, the shih poo's coat barely sheds, making these dogs a good fit for someone with mild pet allergies. Coloring can take after either parent breed. While poodles have solid coats that are typically black, white, gray, brown or apricot, shih tzu coats may be solid or come in various color patterns and combinations. Shoodle coats may mimic the coloring pattern of either parent. Personality: Often, mixed-breed dogs develop a temperament that balances the qualities of their parent breeds. Shih tzus tend to be highly affectionate and extremely charming, but possess a stubborn streak that can make them difficult to train. Poodles, on the other hand, while equally charming with playful and comedic personalities, are highly intelligent dogs who are more eager to please and easier to train. Shih poos, as a result, are often playful, affectionate and quick-witted little charmers, although they may inherit their shih tzu parent's willfulness. Because of this, they often need a firm but patient guide in training, and might not be the best choice for first-time dog parents. What shih poos may lack in trainability, they more than make up for in love and affection. They love to play with toys and get along wonderfully with older children, although due to their small size and hair that's easy to grab and pull, they should be closely supervised around small children. While friendly and great at getting along well with other pets, especially if introduced as puppies, older shih poos might not love having other dogs around. They often do well as only dogs. Even so, these fluffy pups love being close to their people and don't tolerate being left alone for long periods of time. If work or school takes you away from home for long hours, you may need to consider doggie daycare to keep your shih poo happy. Living With: Shih poos are generally versatile dogs that can do well in small apartments as well as larger homes. They need up to 30 minutes a day of play and exercise, which can be satisfied with two or three short walks each day or minute sessions of vigorous playtime twice daily. The rest of the time, they'll be content to curl up in your lap or to cuddle up next to you on the sofa. Shih poos are highly social and love to be around people, so expect them to stick close as you move around the house. While shih poos tend to be long-lived, with some living 17 years or more, they can be predisposed to the same health problems as their parent breeds. These include allergies, patellar luxation , vision problems and endocrine disorders such as Addison's disease, hypothyroidism and Cushing's disease. Shih poos that inherit the shorter snout of the shih tzu may also be prone to respiratory issues, reverse sneezing and snoring. Extra care should be taken to prevent overheating and heat stroke, says Dogtime. And like many small breeds, these dogs may be prone to dental problems and will benefit from regular dental cleanings and daily tooth brushing. Regardless of the length or texture of your shih poo's coat, it will be thick, fast-growing and prone to matting. Daily brushing and monthly visits to the groomer are recommended to keep the coat under control. Limit baths to a few times a month to prevent the skin from drying out. When bathing, be sure to prevent water from getting in the ear canals to prevent ear infections from developing. Shoodles have healthy appetites and will overeat if given the chance, which will lead to unhealthy weight gain. It's best to keep them on a consistent feeding schedule rather than allowing them to graze on kibble throughout the day. Feed your pup a high-quality food dog formulated for small breeds , and keep treats to a minimum. History: Not much is known about the backstory of the shih poo. Unlike other boutique breeds, no breeders have come forward to take credit for introducing the shih poo. Most likely this cross-breed came about unintentionally, with breeders in the U. As a cross-breed, shih poos are not recognized as an official breed by the American Kennel Club, although they are recognized by various designer breed registration clubs, including the American Canine Hybrid Club and the International Designer Canine Registry. Related Pet Care Articles. Although purebred dogs are carefully bred over generations according to the breed standard the written description of the ideal physical and temperamental traits of the breed , hybrid dogs like the shih tzu—poodle mix have no official standard. This means that characteristics like height and weight, body structure, color, coat type, and temperament are less predictable than they are in purebred dogs. Different breeders may have different ideas of what constitutes the perfect shih tzu—poodle mix. Additionally, shih tzu—poodle mixes are not recognized by any of the reputable purebred dog registries such as the American Kennel Club or United Kennel Club. Shih Tzu—Poodle Mix Care The low-shedding coats of both shih tzu and poodles require of upkeep, and the grooming requirements for shih tzu—poodle mixes are similar. Brush daily or every other day to keep the coat untangled and to prevent mats from forming. Like poodles and shih tzu, shih tzu—poodle mixes require regular haircuts from a professional groomer. Also trim the nails every two weeks and check the ears once a week, cleaning them with a pet safe ear cleaner if they appear dirty. Excessive dirt or redness in the ears means a veterinary visit is in order. Shih tzu—poodle mixes are smart, but how trainable they are depends whether they inherited more the eager-to-please personality of the Poodle or the more stubborn nature of the shih tzu. Regardless, positive-reinforcement methods like clicker training using tasty treat rewards gets great results from any dog. Despite being indoor dogs, shih tzu—poodle mixes still need some exercise. Aim for two walks a day or one walk and one play session in a safely enclosed space like your fenced yard. More energetic shih tzu—poodle mixes with trainable personalities might also like training for fun dog sports like agility, flyball, and obedience. Each breed has certain inherited health disorders in their family background, and those health issues can be passed on to the puppies in a litter. Breeding shih tzu to poodles means the puppies could potentially inherit any of the genetic diseases common to either breed. Shih tzu are prone to hip dysplasia , patellar luxation slipped kneecap , and various eye problems including cataracts , progressive retinal atrophy, retinal detachment, and eyelid abnormalities. Responsible breeders start with healthy, well-bred adult purebred shih tzu and poodles and test them for the genetic diseases common to their breed before breeding them together. Responsible breeders should also test their adult shih tzu—poodle hybrids before breeding them to decrease the odds that the puppies will inherit genetic issues. Responsible breeders also offer a health guarantee on their puppies that protects the puppy buyer in case the puppy develop a genetic disease later in life. Many shih tzu—poodles will overeat if you keep the bowl filled, so instead serve measured meals twice a day. Ask to your veterinarian for a recommendation for a healthy food for your shih tzu—poodle mix, as well as an ideal healthy weight for your adult shih tzu—poodle. Although a playful pup sounds endearing, consider how many games of fetch or tag you want to play each day, and whether you have kids or other dogs who can stand in as playmates for the dog. Most Shih-Poos are described as friendly and playful. While Shih-Poos enjoy a good siesta, they also enjoy walks and thrive on playtime. They may not be eager to learn new tricks but do enjoy interaction and attention. Shih-Poos may not be as barky as their Poodle parent, but may alert you to any displeasures, such as a missed meal, with a single bark until every few minutes until needs are met. Training and socialization should be established early on. Consistency and positive reinforcement are the ways to go with Shih-Poos. Shih-Poo Health While many designer crossbreeds have improved overall health, they can inherit health issues their parents are prone to. That said, Shih-Poos can typically live approximately 16 years on average in relatively great health. Watch for signs of heat stroke if your dog happens to have a shorter snout. As a small dog, they can be prone to dental problems. Maintain good dental care and have their teeth regularly checked and professionally cleaned. Your vet can help you develop a care routine that will keep your dog healthy. Make sure Shih-Poos are kept on a dietary schedule. Do not allow free-feeding as they will overeat and rapidly gain weight. They will need regular potty breaks and one or two ten-to minute walks a day for optimal health. Dental issues can be problematic. Regular teeth cleanings are recommended, as well as systematic dental chews and teeth brushings. Your vet should be able to help you establish a routine. Shih-Poo ears should be kept clean and dry. After bathing, take extra steps to ensure this. If your pup gets a smelly, pungent odor, they may have an ear infection. Ear cleaning solution can help keep your pup from getting infections and unnecessary trips to the vet. Shih-Poo Feeding An ideal Shih-Poo diet should be formulated for a small-sized breed with medium energy. High quality food is recommended, as they do tend to have dental issues. They should not be allowed to free feed as they may gain weight. A feeding schedule is ideal with a minimum of treats. They can get the curly fur from their Poodle parent, the straight fur from their Shih-Tzu parent, or a combination of the two, which is most likely. The color will vary, as well. They can come in black, white, brown, brindle, and all variations and color combinations. Daily brushings, as well as monthly groomings, will help keep your pup looking and feeling their very best. You may also want to give them a few baths in between, but not more than weekly, as their skin and coat can get dry and irritated. Shih-Poos prefer to be mostly around adults or older kids who know how to play gently. That said, for children who learn early how to properly approach and play with a small dog, the Shih-Poo can make a great companion. When it comes to other pets, Shih-Poos can get along with other animals if they are introduced slowly and calmly, and early socialization will help this go smoothly. Shih-Poos can be left alone for short periods of time, but a second dog could be ideal for them, especially in their later years. However, you may want to try Shih Tzu or Poodle breed-specific rescues, as they often care for mixes, as well. Here are some rescues you can try:. Because of their small size they are the perfect lapdog and are known as a designer breed. Poodle crosses are one of the most popular form of hybrid dog breeds. The Shih Poo was bred to be a hypoallergenic lapdog, making it perfect for those with allergies. Although they are very popular, they are not recognized by the American Kennel Club as an official breed yet. You should always remember to purchase your puppy from a reputable breeder, or you can adopt at your local shelter. A Shih Tzu was originally Chinese Royalty and were pampered by Emperors and spent their days as lap warmers. They are known for being very loyal to their owners but are also outgoing and stubborn dogs. Although they are a sociable breed, they love to be at home too. The Poodle came from Germany and was originally a popular dog among artists. The American Kennel Club recognized the poodle as an official breed in , and now recognize it as the 7th most popular dog breed. So, when we cross a Shih Tzu with a Poodle, we get a Shih Poo, which combines the characteristics from both parents into this fun, cuddly little dog. While it is not always possible to know the exact characteristics of your Shih Poo because they are a hybrid, there are some general traits that are more common in this small breed. Take a look below to learn more about them. Characteristics As we mentioned above, because the Shih Poo is a relatively new breed, it can be difficult to predict exactly what they are going to look like. We can take a look at their parents and guess many of the statistics and traits though. Appearance Because both of their parents are small, it is easy to guess that the Shih Poo is going to be small. On average, a Shih Poo weighs in at 8 to 18 pounds and ranges in height from 8 to 18 inches. However, as Poodle and Shih Tzu sizes can vary between teacup, miniature and standard, the size of the Shih Poo will also vary. Although small in size, they have a sturdy body. Coat Shih Poo coats can vary and it can be long and silky or short and curly. They can get the curly fur from their Poodle parent, the straight fur from their Shih Tzu parent, or a combination of the two, which is most likely. Their fur is hypoallergenic, which is what makes them such a popular hybrid. The Shih Poo inherits this hypoallergenic fur from their Poodle parent, as the Shih Tzu has a non-hypoallergenic coat. They can come in black, white, brown, brindle and all variations and color combinations. It is not uncommon for puppies of the same litter to be born with different colored coats. A Shih Poo is normally friendly and playful and, with moderate energy levels, would be very happy napping in your lap for a few hours. They can be quite vocal dogs, although not as vocal as their Poodle parent. Shih Poos are most likely to bark if they are frustrated at something, so it is important to train them from an early age to ensure they do not exhibit unwanted behaviors later on in life. A Shih Poo can make a great family dog when given supportive and positive training and lots of attention , but they are also adaptable and may be suited to the quiet life too. This means they can be a great pup for single individuals who are retired and want a cuddly companion dog to curl up with! They do well in different living environments, including big houses, small houses and apartments. Lifespan The life expectancy of a Shih Poo is relatively long. They can normally live for anywhere between 10 to 18 years, although on average it is 13 years. Known Health Issues Again, because the Shih Tzu Poodle mix is a crossbreed, and a new crossbreed, it can be difficult to know exactly what health conditions they may face. However, we can guess based on their parents. Luckily, if they inherit the longer muzzle from their Poodle parent, they may not have any issues with breathing problems that Shih Tzus inherit. Shih Poos are also known for having dental issues, which we go into more detail about below. Of course, these are all possible health problems but not for definite. Daily Life Now you know all about the characteristics and temperament of a Shih Poo dog, it is time to take a look at what everyday life with one is like. Food And Diet As with any dog, you should always make sure to feed your Shih Poo a healthy and balanced diet. Shih Poos are known to love food, so you should never allow them to free-feed otherwise you may end up with a very overweight dog! An ideal Shih-Poo diet should be a dog food formulated for a small-sized breed with medium energy. You should change their diet as they grow from a puppy into an adult and then again as they go into their senior years. If you need help with the type of food you should be feeding your Shih Poo, you can always ask your vet. They should exercise every day, with it recommended that you should take your Shih Poo on one or two 15 minute walks every day. They will also regularly need to go outside to go to the bathroom, because of their small body and small bladder. Family Compatibility Shih Poos make great family dogs because they love attention. They are friendly and playful, although they need regular grooming and exercise. Because they are an adaptable dog, they can thrive in many different situations, whether you live in a big house or a small apartment. They also love to cuddle up with you and are the perfect lapdog, which may make them perfect for a retired individual who wants a furry companion! It is worth mentioning that Shih Poos are very delicate dogs and may not do well in environments with small children, unless the children have been taught to be gentle with the dogs. Children have a tendency to be rough with animals, and this could end up harming your Shih Poo, so a family with older children might be a better fit. Your Shih Poo will get on with other dogs in the home if they are socialized properly. They do not really like to be left alone and can benefit from having a furry playmate in the home, especially in their later years. Training Many Shih Poo owners have reported that their pooch is energetic and playful, which means they are not difficult to train. They are intelligent dogs that respond well to consistent and positive reinforcement training methods, with verbal praise and treats as rewards. Punishment based training is never a good idea and will not help your Shih Poo to understand. Depending on which parent your Shih Poo takes after more, they may be more inclined to learn tricks. If they take after their Poodle parent, they will likely have a very high IQ and will want to learn. However, a Shih Tzu is much less inclined to impress you! You should start training your Shih Poo as soon as you get them. Housetraining can be a challenge with a Shih Poo puppy, but a little vigilance goes a long way and staying on top of their training will make them much happier. You will need to be patient with them while they are potty training and remember not to express anger at your Shih Poo puppy. Socializing Socializing your Poodle mix puppy is also important from a young age. This is especially important if you have young children in the house or other pets. You should always remember to do this slowly so you do not overwhelm them. Grooming Unfortunately, Shih Poos do require quite a bit of grooming. Neither of their parent breeds have very easy coats to maintain, although a Shih Poo does have a hypoallergenic coat and is very low-shedding. The Shih Poo may have long and silky or short and curly fur, depending on which parent they take after more, but it is likely to be a mix of somewhere in the middle. They need to be brushed daily and trimmed monthly to keep their fur in the best shape and mat and tangle-free. Regular bathing is not really required because they are a very clean dog, although they may need a bath from time to time. A bath can also help to ward off any skin issues they may have inherited. Professional Grooming Many Shih Poo owners take their dogs to the groomers for a hair cut. The type of cut they get will depend on the type of fur they have, but if they have curly fur then you might choose a puppy clip or lamb clip. You will also need to trim their nails occasionally and check their ears for any sign of infection. It is especially important to make sure their ears are dry after bathing, otherwise they may end up with an infection. Both the Shih Tzu and the Poodle breeds are prone to tear stains, so you can expect your Shih Poo to also suffer from tear stains. Gently wiping around the eyes once a day can help this problem. We mentioned above that Shih Poos can have a lot of dental issues. You will need to make sure you are cleaning their teeth daily to ensure this does not become a big problem. You can do this with chewable dental sticks if needed. You vet can help you to establish a routine. A Shih Poo is a very adaptable dog that can thrive in many different situations. They like attention and to be doted on, so if you live in a family where many different people can give them lots of attention, they will love living with you! Equally, they are happy living in individual homes with one carer. Are Shih Poos aggressive? Shih Poos are not known for being aggressive. They are energetic and playful and love attention, although they also love curling up on your lap for a cuddle. They love their families and are avidly devoted to them. They tend to be friendly to other dogs, strangers, other pets, and children. They can do well in families with younger children as long as any time with them is closely supervised. The Shih-Poo tends to be a courageous little dog. They make excellent watchdogs because they are very alert. However, they can become territorial and barking can become a nuisance if left unchecked. Although the genetic mix can sometimes result in winning the genetic lottery, a mixed dog breed can still be susceptible to health conditions common in one or both of the parent breeds in the cross. They can have the long, silky, and straight coat of the Shih Tzu, the short, curly, and non-shedding coat of the Poodle, or a combination of both. Most Shih-Poos end up with a curly or wavy, low or non-shedding coat. However, you should be prepared for your Shih-Poo to exhibit either coat type of the parent breeds. This coat looks its best with a combination of brushing a few times a week at home and then professional grooming every four to six weeks. This will help remove tangles and loose hair and prevent matting. Regular dental care is also important. Small dogs are more prone to dental disease. Drop down ears, or floppy ears, are more prone to ear infections because they can trap moisture, dirt, or debris. Daily walks and some indoor playtime will give this dog plenty of exercise. Beyond that, most of them can keep up with you on longer walks and can even compete in dog sports like rally, obedience, and agility. Be sure to check with your vet first and get your dog cleared before taking on any rigorous activities or training for dog sports. Golden Retrievers grow the fastest between 3 to 6 months of age. Around the six-month mark, their growth starts to taper off. This will prevent him from reaching his full potential. If left untreated, it can cause lasting damage to their bones, muscles, immune system, skin, and digestive system. Being ill for an extended period might also affect his development. Your puppy may be stunted due to malnutrition. Dangers of stunted or accelerated growth Some people prefer bigger Goldens, but some like them small, like Mini Golden Retrievers. This might lead to under or over-feeding, neither of which is ideal. Accelerated growth can cause hip or elbow dysplasia. It can also be responsible for bone disease and arthritis. Stunted Golden puppies, whether by illness or under-feeding, are generally weaker, and make them susceptible to falling sick. What is the best age to spay or neuter your pup? You can spay Golden Retriever puppies as early as 8 weeks old, but any time before they reach sexual maturity is preferred, which is around one year old. This will prevent undesirable behaviors such as marking, territorial behavior, or a fixation with toys. All of which are hard to correct when they manifest. For breeds that are predisposed to hip dysplasia, vets recommend spaying around the 6-month mark. Will neutering or spaying your Golden pup affect his or her growth? Yes, fixing a Golden before they reach sexual maturity generally causes your dog to grow bigger. This is because sex hormones suppress growth hormones. Without growth inhibition, your Golden will continue to grow. Aside from joint problems, there are also a few issues connected to spaying or neutering. They can become more prone to some forms of cancer. Some dogs also experience a change in behavior after the operation. The lack of estrogen can make female dogs more aggressive. Male dogs may also experience an increase in fearfulness. Sexual maturity usually occurs in Golden around 8 to 12 months. This gives you ample time to decide whether to sterilize or not. How heavy is a newborn Golden Retriever puppy? But, puppies as small as 10 oz at birth have been recorded. They usually leave their mom at 10 lbs. Also, bigger litters generally have smaller puppies, but they should all catch up by their 8th week. How to identify an overweight Golden Retriever? Use your eyes and hands to assess if your Golden is overweight or not. A survey in showed that .While it might look cute or funny, overweight dogs actually have shorter lifespans. Being excessively chubby shaves off two years and causes health issues. Do Golden Retriever types have different growth rates? Show dogs are often heavier than working dogs. Aside from other factors we mentioned, a nutritious diet and an active lifestyle will help keep your Golden healthy and happy. Remember, their final size will vary from one another, depending on variation and pedigree. Your new furry friend has a lot of growing to do, and you probably have a lot of questions. Your Golden Retriever puppy will go through a number of developmental stages throughout their first twelve weeks. Male Golden Retrievers generally weigh between 65 and 75 pounds and stand from 23 to 24 inches tall. Females are generally smaller weighing between 55 to 65 pounds, and will grow to stand .At 4 months, your Golden Retriever puppy will reach about half their adult height. When it comes to mental development, it can take even longer than that before the Golden Retriever is fully mature. However, every puppy is a unique individual, and these are merely milestone guidelines. Disparities exist between the working and show Goldens, as well as between males and females. Golden Retriever puppy growth can also be quite sporadic. As an overall average, many Golden Retriever puppies will weigh just approximately 1. Golden Retrievers are classified as a gundog breed, and these dogs are often divided into those bred for show and those meant for work. However, the body of the show Golden is typically larger, taller, heavy-boned, and fuller in the chest. Small Parents Like people, puppies inherit physical traits from their parents. And even puppies from the same litter can vary in size. Neither of these scenarios is healthy for a puppy. Larger breeds like the Golden Retriever are more at risk for growth disorders than small breed dogs. This article will give you a lot more information on how much to feed, what to feed, and how often to feed a Golden Retriever puppy. Illness and Puppy Growth If a puppy has been seriously ill for a prolonged period, it may affect their ability to grow normally. However, once the puppy is free of worms, they should continue to grow at a normal rate. The best way to determine if your puppy is too thin or too fat is by how he looks and feels. When looking at your puppy from above, he should have a noticeable waistline. Another way to tell is by putting your hands on either side of his ribcage. You should be able to feel his ribs using a gentle pressure. But if his ribs are visible, he could be underweight. Obesity is a huge problem for many dog breeds. Although there are ways to make your puppy grow bigger, this is not something you should attempt. It could also mean you end up with a fat puppy. One of the best ways to ensure your puppy has a long, healthy life is to ensure he stays at an optimal weight. Hip and elbow dysplasia and other musculoskeletal disorders are associated with excess weight in larger breeds. Having your dog neutered at a young age can also cause them to grow taller. The problem is, this can also cause abnormalities in joint formation. Neutering also makes Golden Retrievers more at risk for certain types of cancers. Typically it will take approximately 18 months for your Golden Retriever to become an adult dog. Even though they can reach their full height at anywhere from 9 to 12 months, it will usually take them longer to fill out to their full weight. Remember that there are wide variations in size within the Golden Retriever breed. If this is the case, you should contact your veterinarian to seek advice. Beginning the puppy development stages before birth Puppy development stages week by week Amazingly, in a way the puppy development stages begin before your dog is even born. Your puppy spends approximately 9 weeks developing inside his Mom. The mother dog has a womb or uterus, that has two long tubes, and the puppies grow in a row along each tube rather like peas in a pod. The puppies are joined to their mother by a placenta which provides all the nourishment they need for those few weeks. To begin with, the puppies have plenty of room to move but they grow fast and as the time for birth draws near they are packed in quite tightly. The one week old puppy Your puppy is born fully furred but with his eyes and ears closed so he cannot hear or see. His front feet are strong and he can pull himself towards his mother with them. He can cry if he is uncomfortable and his mother will respond to his cries by moving him towards her and licking him. Your puppy spends most of his time sleeping or suckling. He cannot regulate his own body temperature and needs his mother for heat, or an artificial heat source. In the first week to ten days of his life your puppy grows rapidly and will double his birth weight. His forelegs are getting much stronger. She licks the puppies bottoms to stimulate a bowel or bladder movement and eats the result. There is no cleaning up for the breeder to do yet. The breeder will begin to handle the puppies more though, and get them used to human contact. She will worm the puppies for the first time at the end of this week. Puppies begin to get their personalities. Your puppy can stand and sit up by the end of the week. Tails can be wagged, ears will be completely open and puppies start play growling and interacting with their littermates. Your puppy can regulate his body temperature more effectively and will start to cut his first teeth in preparation for weaning. The front teeth, canines and incisors are cut first. Toward the end of the week he may have his first tiny taste of puppy food. They also start to move away from the sleeping area to empty their bowels and bladder. They may try to climb out of the whelping box. If she lives indoors, she may rejoin the family for more of each day. Your puppy will cut his back teeth and the breeder will get weaning underway this week and by the end of it, your puppy will be getting quite a bit of his nourishment from puppy food. She will also worm the puppies a second time. If the mother is allowed near the puppies after she has been fed, she may regurgitate her dinner for them. This is completely natural and normal. He is a proper little dog. Rolling around with his brothers and sisters and playing with toys. Teething toys, puppy Kongs, balls and rope toys are big favorites with puppies. He can bark too and some puppies can be quite noisy at this age! He chases after his mother whenever she appears and suckles hungrily, but she is starting to get fed up with it, and may be reluctant to feed her brood for very long. His mother is teaching him not to bite too hard. If he lives in outdoor kennels he should spend part of each day indoors with the family. By the end of the sixth week, most are fully weaned, and eating five or six little meals of puppy food each day. Socialization must begin in earnest. He is now two months old and ready for his new life. It is the time during which they become fearful of anything unfamiliar and need to be thoroughly socialized. This is also the time during which most puppies get to grips with house-training, learning to wait before eliminating and start sleeping through the night without a potty break. It is a busy time for new puppy owners. Your puppy will have his vaccinations during this month. Biting can be a big problem during this stage and you need to be patient and consistent in order to teach the puppy not to hurt people when he plays. Provided you use force free methods, this is a great time to get puppy training under way, and especially to teach a puppy recall, and to get your puppy used to working with food. So, for a 2. You can do the same calculation for medium pups at sixteen weeks and large breed pups at 20 weeks — just divide his weight by his age in weeks before you multiply by .Medium to large pups will reach about half their adult height by the end of the month. If the weather is warm you can get your puppy swimming now. He should be able to come when he is called, in and around your home, provided there are not too many distractions. It all depends on what you have taught him. He may still be chewing a lot and biting too. Use frozen Kongs to help him and give your furniture and fingers a break. Puppies can go for short walks now. By the end of this month your puppy could have a twenty minute walk each day. He may also enjoy fetching a ball and playing with other dogs, but take care to stop before he gets very tired. Less dependence This is the month during which some puppies start to become less dependent on their humans for security. Keep your puppy close to you outdoors by changing direction frequently so that you puppy has to keep coming to find you. And engaging him in games. The foundations of a great recall are often build or spoilt during this month. If your puppy knows how to sit or lie down at home, start some simple proofing exercises with him in public places. A healthy puppy can usually manage on two meals a day from around six months. During this month a Retriever, Spaniel or GSD puppy will reach around two thirds of his adult weight. A Great Dane and other large breeds will have reached about half their final weight and little dogs will have almost completed their growth. Some female dogs will come on heat for the first time during this month, or the next, so keep an eye open now for swelling of her vulva and any discharge. Your dog will become increasingly confident over the next few months so practice, practice and practice that recall! Make it a habit he cannot break. And be generous with your rewards. Small breed pups may now be more or less mature. Your puppy will enjoy half hour off lead walks now, and should be able to walk on a loose lead for short periods with plenty of encouragement and rewards. Keep practicing that recall! These help to slow his growth further and to build his confidence. Make sure you practice good outdoor management on walks to maintain the good recall you have built and work hard on thoroughly proofing all his obedience skills. Read up on neutering before you take this important step, for dogs of either sex. Once your dog is a year old he can participate in more strenuous activities and sports. Now is the time to think about the kinds of activities you would like to do with him — go jogging together for example — and if necessary, to start to get him fit. Puppy development stages — Summary There is huge variation in the way in which dogs develop and mature. The puppy development stages and ages outlined above are a rough guide. We hope you enjoyed them and found the information interesting. When it comes to training, you get out what you put in. Your progress depends as much if not more on you rather than your puppy. If you train your puppy five times a day, six days a week he will learn many, many times faster than a puppy that is trained once a day at the weekend. Enjoy watching your puppy grow and develop. And have fun! Golden Retriever Male Puppy Growth Chart lb and kg Keep in mind that minor differences are not a cause for alarm: it is not compulsory for your pup to weigh the listed amount. However, if your puppy has a very low weight, you will know that you should check with your veterinarian. As a new owner of Golden Retriever Puppy, you will be surprised to know that handling of puppies can boost their growth. Not only does it promote proper weight gain, but it can also affect development in other areas. Introduction In Comparing the puppies who were handled with those who did not show that the puppies that were being held opened their eyes and ears and had their hair grow faster and they even had better motor development. You may want to know how your puppy compares to another Golden Retriever. Or are you worried that your dog growth is not on the right path? In studying Golden Retriever growth charts, it is clear that most pups gain weight between 5 and 10 percent per week. Keep in mind that a lot of factors can affect the growth rate of a puppy. One size doesn't fit all Not all puppies will follow the growth chart at an exact speed. There can be a lot of diverse reasons for this. The growth chart can alert you should there be significant differences. However, even good owners can have skinny dogs. The Golden Retriever growth charts can alert you to the common causes of slow growth. Occasionally it comes down to a change in the dog diet. Ensure your dog likes his food and that he eats frequently. Request your veterinarian to rule out worms or any other condition. In the meantime, rest assured knowing that most puppies do well when they are raised by a loving and caring owner who has a good relationship with a trusted veterinarian and spends a lot of pleasant time with the puppy. To ascertain if your puppy is large, small, or average-sized for his or her age, you will first find the correct chart based on the sex of your puppy. Scroll down until you locate your puppy's age on the left side of the table. Then compare your dog weight with each column subsequently to that age. To predict the future heights and weights of your dog growth for a period of time. If your dog weight is always in the average range, you can scroll down the average column to estimate how large your puppies maybe as an adult. The same applies to other columns too. Remember, this is just an estimate. By Tom Massey Mar 02, Adopting a golden retriever is one of the best decisions you can make. These loving dogs are constantly praised for their gentle and calm, yet playful nature, making them perfect dogs for all walks of life and types of families. So when you do finally bring your Golden Retriever puppy home, you want to do everything you can to give them a long and healthy life for years to come. This is a wide range, so keep in mind that the weight of your Retriever will vary depending on genetic factors and sex. For example, female Golden Retrievers will weigh closer to 55 pounds while Golden Retriever males are heavier and will weigh closer to 75 pounds. Females also typically reach their full size by their first birthday, while males may continue growing through their second year. You can usually tell the size males and females will be based on what their parents look like, which is why Snowy Pines encourages meeting the parents or browsing through their photos and biographies online. Then, calculate 1. What to Expect: This age is crucial for mother-puppy bonding since he will depend on his mother for food, cleaning, and socialization. Image Source Weeks months Golden Retriever Male Weight: Between 8 to 12 weeks, your male puppy will average between 10 to 22 pounds. Golden Retriever Female Weight: Although females will grow to be smaller than males, they are typically around the same weight at this age group. The puppies become very playful, curious, and discover their voices little by little. Introductory training like house training is essential. Socialization is also important, which is why Snowy Pines ensures that all puppies stay with their littermates until adoption. For female puppies, 6 months is a little over the halfway point to their full-size, and males are essentially smaller versions of their adult bodies. Remember, at this age, you can multiply by two to determine their adult weight! What to Expect: Socialization is still crucial at this age, and more intense training can also begin. The puppy should also be kept in happy and safe environments, as any exposure to something fearful at this age may impact him long-term. This is entirely normal: Think of your puppy as a teenager who is going through adolescence and waiting for the rest of his body to catch up. They may get territorial and challenge you and other pets for dominance. Most Golden Retrievers will be fully grown by 24 months old, although this varies. Golden Retriever Female Weight: In most cases, females are finished growing before 16 to 24 months. Whatever their nature is like at the to month mark is likely what it will be throughout their adult life. They are loyal, friendly, and calm, making them the perfect companion for small and large families alike. However, Goldens are susceptible to certain illnesses and diseases that are common in bigger breeds that are typically caused by overfeeding, stunted or accelerated growth, and genetic issues. One of the most common diseases that goldens experience is Osteochondritis dissecans OCD. OCD is a developmental disease that affects large-breed dogs because of the accelerated growth they experience. It is an inflammatory condition that causes abnormal cartilage development on the end of a bone in the joint. This can lead to joint problems like arthritis and hip dysplasia which commonly appears in the elbow, hip, and knee. Image Source The good news is that, although larger breeds like golden retrievers are prone to joint issues like this, you may be able to help prevent it through proper practice. OCD is a specific disease that is more common in dogs that receive too much energy and calcium in their diets. Other common factors are genetics, rapid growth, and hormonal factors. Overfeeding can lead to obesity, and all that extra weight can leave your puppy with skeletal abnormalities that put too much weight on joints. Another way to avoid accidentally stunted or accelerated growth is to ensure your golden retriever puppy is getting fed appropriately and receiving the right amount of calories. Image Source Months Between 2 and 4 months old, your puppy should eat 4 times per day with 2 ounces per meal. This will add up to 7 to 9 ounces per day, depending on how much he willingly eats. Keep him on puppy food through his first year before switching to young adult food. They must receive regular exercise every day. However, this depends on their age. As previously covered, the more your puppy grows, the more susceptible to common diseases like joint problems. Breeders with years of experience, like the team at Snowy Pines, work hard to keep pure bloodlines so that all of the parents and their litters are as healthy as they can be, which helps guarantee a lifetime full of happiness without any issue. Share on. Not all goldens will grow to the same size and at the same rate. The size of the parents is always a good indicator of whether your dog will be above or below average in size. However, while natural variation is nothing to worry about, stunted growth or accelerated growth is. If a golden retriever puppy is malnourished or suffering from an unidentified medical condition usually hookworm or ringworm , their natural growth can be compromised. This can lead to serious medical issues in later life, as it can leave them with weak bones, weak muscles, and a weak immune system, as well as a tendency to develop both skin and digestive issues. Growing too quickly, largely as a result of overfeeding, can also pose a major health risk. As well as leading to obesity, carrying too much weight at the development stage can leave your golden retriever with skeletal abnormalities, hip dysplasia, and osteochondrosis , a condition that affects the joints. With these tips, you will help fight off those genetic health disorders as well. Appropriate Diet Start off by speaking to your vet for guidance on foods to use for the different life stages. At the very least, you will need a nutritionally complete and balanced diet made for large breeds. Good food will help your pup gain the right amount of weight, look healthy, and have enough energy. Proper exercise will build their muscle and bone strength, prevent obesity, increase their agility, stop destructive behavior, and help them release pent-up energy. Vaccines will help to prevent infectious diseases such as hepatitis, parvovirus, rabies, and distemper, all of which could affect the growth and overall health of your puppy. This will be a plus for her overall health. It would also be great to have your vet do routine health checks on your puppy. This way, no issue will go unnoticed, and treatment can be administered early for better outcomes. A shiny coat and bright eyes are a plus. Alternatively, if you notice rapid weight gain or loss, unusual bumps and lumps on their skin, digestive issues, changes in behavior, and visual or hearing complications, take your dog to the vet right away. Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers, especially females, grow pretty quickly. Males could take up to 18 months to achieve the same milestone. However, both will still need an additional year to fill out the chest fully. Adult height, on the other hand, will be reached between 9 and 12 months. As always, females will get there a bit faster than males. You can get a rough idea of how big your golden retriever will grow by first studying the parents. Take note of the size that both of the parents and previous litters have had. Rarely will a puppy grow larger than its parents, so the measurements you gather will give you a better idea of how tall and heavy your golden retriever will get. Full-grown, healthy, male golden retrievers have a height of between 22 and 24 inches while the females are 20 to 22 inches tall. In terms of height and body structure, the Canadian golden retriever has no rival. Spaying and neutering specifically affect the development of bones and also ligament and tendon strength. In fact, some studies report higher incidences of cranial cruciate ligament tears and hip dysplasia among golden retrievers that went through this procedure. Therefore, consult your vet when deciding if and when to spay or neuter your dog. The weight of your golden retriever is a good indication of their healthy development. While male and female Goldens will have different weights and show goldens tend to be heavier than working goldens, overall, they should be hitting the weights listed in the growth and weight chart above. If your dog is not hitting these milestones, consult your vet about malnutrition, possibly caused by worms, and excessive golden retriever growth, which is often the result of overfeeding. If you feel like your pooch is missing any of them, again, it is time to consult your vet. In general, good nutrition and a loving home is a recipe for a happy and healthy golden retriever. If you want to know more about your golden retriever, you can do a DNA test, too. You can choose one of the tests below:.
