Adoption Information How does it work? What is the Adoption process? If you like the look of one of our rescues and the information provided suits your family situation, please get in touch with us. We often have more information on the dog that we have not shared. As we have the best interests of the dog at heart, please note that after discussions and consultations, we may decide that a certain dog is not suitable for your family and filling in an adoption form does not mean that you automatically will be able to adopt that dog. Once we have your form and have been over it, we will put you in touch with the person responsible for that dog, be it owner or foster home for you to go and meet the dog. We do not have our own kennels and try as far as possible to rehome dogs directly from their old homes to the new one. We also place dogs in foster care if their situation warrants it. One of our Volunteers will be in touch to arrange a suitable time to perform a House Check to make extra-sure that the dog can be handed over to you in good conscience. Something of a tricky process, we know, but we thank you for your understanding and co-operation. What are the Adoption Fees? Labrador Rescue does not charge a set adoption fee and we rely totally on donations. However, in some adoptions, a specified contribution is asked for to cover sterilizations and any other direct costs. This will be discussed with you during the adoption process. This is not negotiable. Donations above and beyond this contribution are much appreciated. Who should adopt? Anyone who is willing to open their home and hearts and who understands that there may be settling in problems but is willing to commit to working through any problems with guidance and help. The adjustment time for new dogs varies so much between dogs depending on a myriad of circumstances, but you should be prepared for a settling in time of between 2 and 8 weeks. If you have the space, time and resources. If you love dogs, have a stable income, safe, acceptable accommodation and want to make a difference — we are definitely interested in hearing from you. Listen to us. We strive to provide as much information about each rescue as possible upfront. Unfortunately, as with life, there are no guarantees. It might all look perfect on paper, but the chemistry is just not there. If you have honestly tried all avenues and it is still not working for you after a reasonable amount of time, we will take the dog back. One of the most important bits of advice we can give is not to take it too personally if the dog does not warm to you immediately. Your home is a new environment for your dog and it will take time for the dog to adapt to you house and your rules and ways of doing things. All we can say is, persevere — ultimately it is worth it. In a perfect world, all of our rescues would be in perfect health. However, there are medical problems specifically relating to Labradors, especially as they get older. We will communicate with you any known conditions or problems. We do endeavour to have all of the rescues looked at by the vets and clinics who work with us, but sometimes this is not possible for logistical reasons. All of our dog are sterilized before rehoming if this is not already done and we also make sure that their vaccinations are up to date. If the vet suspects any underlying conditions, he will let us know and we will pass on this information. Adamasdor Labrador Retrievers is home to about 20 Labradors and based on Donkerhoek Farm, approximately 25 km east of Pretoria city centre, still within the Tshwane Metropolitan area in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. We specialize in the breeding of Labrador Retrievers for the show ring, but believe that any Labrador should, primarily, have that typical temperament that sets them apart from other breeds. It is the Labrador temperament that made them famous for being the best companion dog that anyone could ever hope to have. Temperament and Breed Type are therefore the main components when selecting dogs for our breeding programme. We breed on average 2 - 3 litters per year, from which the best pups are selected for becoming much loved pets and show dogs at Adamasdor, or sold to other breed- and show kennels. Most pups are sold to be companion dogs with good looks and typical temperaments. Despite the large number of dogs, we make every effort to provide a true pet home for all our dogs at Adamasdor. Gold Cream. Pugapoos are good house pets, and they tend to be easy to handle. This dog is a good family dog and handles children well, as they are playful. They are affectionate and loyal to their owners. The Pugapoo is a gentle, social, and intelligent dog with hints of whimsy in its character. This makes them a lot of fun but difficult to train. They are friendly to strangers and can get along well with other dogs, cats, and pets. They have some degree of separation anxiety as they enjoy being around people and other animals. Otherwise, they are relatively quiet. Seeing as they are playful and energetic, they can be difficult to train at first. The owner must exercise positive reinforcement when training to yield the best results. They are also easily potty trained. The Pugapoo has unique traits that are formed from being a hybrid of two different breeds. Give them some exercise, proper grooming, and a healthy diet, and you are good to go. They are also able to live in any type of environment. Just be careful of increased heat or cold temperatures and look out for panting, which is typically an indication of overheating. Exercising your Pugapoo The little bodies of the Pugapoo can store a lot of energy, which means the dog can be lively and active. Exercise is a good way to get some of that excess energy out of their bodies. A lengthy walk once a day would be an ideal amount of exercise. Playtime with their owners is also a great activity. Grooming: Are Pugapoos hypoallergenic? The difference in coats means that some Pugadoos can be quite hypoallergenic if they have a bit more fur like the poodle coat. However, Pugapoos with short fur are not known to be hypoallergenic. The various kinds of coats from Pugappoos mean that their grooming needs also vary. The Pugapoos might have to visit the parlor every six weeks at most, depending on their coat type. But they do require their teeth to be brushed at least once a day to prevent gum recession and wobbly teeth. Feeding a Pugapoo: What is their food consumption? Make sure that the food you are giving your Pugapoo is high-quality and that it is meant for dogs of the same size and level of energy. You can feed them twice a day with controlled portions as not to overfeed the dog. Instead, Pugapoo puppies should be eating food made for their growing bodies, which requires a lot of nutrients. What health problems does the Pug and Poodle Mix have? All dog breeds are susceptible to different health issues. Still, mix-breeds like a Pugapoo or a Goldendoodle are less likely to develop congenital conditions because of the larger gene pool than purebred dogs. Pugapoos do, however, still have the potential to develop some health conditions. Some signs that your Pugadoo has Legg-Calve-Perthes disease are a worsening limp, stiffness in one or both rear limbs, licking or chewing at the hip area, muscle atrophy, and restlessness and aggression. Other health conditions Pugapoos are susceptible to are: Eye problems — mostly inherited. In general, it is a dog that is pretty affectionate, loyal and devoted, and makes a good apartment dog. They are gentle and sociable though, but have a hint of willfulness and whims in their character, making them relatively slow in responding to training. Hence, careful training is required since they would be willing to please their masters. Pugapoos generally bark less, but can turn up to be barkers if they take too much after their poodle parents. They are naturally playful and get along well with kids and other pets, but will never forget alarming their family members if they hear a strange noise or see a stranger around. The breed does not do well if kept alone for long periods of time. Care Exercise Being a high-energy breed, with quite a good amount of activity, the pugapoo will obtain its exercise it needs on its own. Since it is an indoor breed, it does not need a significant amount of space to stay active. For all these reasons, the little canine does not require lots of exercises. Take it out for a short daily walk, or even a jogging session. The playful pugapoo would enjoy playing flyball, rally and obedience games with you. This should also keep them healthy and sound both physically and mentally. Grooming Grooming your pugapoo completely depends on its coat type. Brushing them once a month should be enough to keep it clean. They need occasional trimming. But you must also remember that the curly version of the pugapoo sheds relatively lesser than the short, straight version. Clip the hair to avoid tousles. If you know how to clip it, you can use your skills else, you can well take your dog to the professional. Do not bathe your dog frequently or unnecessarily. Give it a shower only when its coat is really dirty. Health Problems As most dog lovers would know, the gene pool of the crossbreed dogs is much larger than the purebred ones, and hence, the former breed of dogs are not as susceptible to developing congenital problems as the latter. However, this does not necessarily mean that your dog is completely protective of all health hazards and issues. Keep an eye for general dog issues like hip dysplasia, eye, breathing and dental problems, allergies, neurological problems like Pug Dog Encephalitis, thyroid, hormonal disorders, etc. Training Begin training your puppies before they are 16 weeks old because it is this time when new faces are more acceptable to the pups. Teach them tricks and train them to socialize well, but do use positive reinforcement techniques like food rewards and praises. Pugapoo pups are sensible young ones, always eager to see you impressed, and they would learn to pick up training in no time. All you need is patience, and you will be rewarded with a beautiful companion. Its regular meals should comprise of regular high-quality foods that are meant for dogs of its size and the same level of energy. Interesting Facts Pugapoos enjoy being in the house, never outdoors. Jasmine's fur can been seen on the couch, carpet and on our shirts when we hold her, but it's fine, small hairs that we see, not big clumps like some dogs would leave behind. Notice how some of the puppies have Poodle-type coats which will not shed and some have Pug-type coats which may or may not shed. The pups with the Poodle coats you will have to take to the groomer to get clipped. The pups with the Pug coats may stay short and you may not have to get them clipped. His owners say, "He is very unique. He doesn't have to be groomed, but when he is, his hair is vastly different. It is softer, lighter and doesn't shed. For a growing Pug Poodle Mix puppy, the amount of exercise they need can be calculated by multiplying their age in months by 5 minutes. So, a 4-month-old puppy can exercise for a total of 20 minutes each day. It should also be pointed out that Pugapoos with shorter muzzles must not be exerted with too much exercise for this might cause breathing difficulties. Bathing Regardless of coat type, a Poodle Pug does not need to be bathed often to avoid skin from drying out and the coat from looking dull. Use a shampoo that is specially made for dogs. It is unfortunate that some breeders have been accused of selling mix-breed puppies as Labradors simply because the puppies exhibited the long-hair trait, so it is our hope that this article will be of help to those breeders, and encourage anyone who is unsure of the parentage of a puppy with such a coat to have it DNA tested, now that such a test is available. At about three weeks of age we started to notice something different about the two yellow boys. They started to develop curly hair on their ears—then on their legs. By the time the litter was five weeks old it was clear that these puppies were very different from any I had whelped before. By now I was concerned that perhaps some other dog had entered the picture as well, and yet I was confident Light had not been with any other dog. It came back quite clear—Buddy and Light were certainly the only parents of this litter. At the time no such test existed for Labrador Retrievers, although a protocol had been developed for other breeds. Randy Smith at the laboratory agreed to develop a protocol for the long-hair gene in Labradors. The wait was brief, and very quickly Dr. Obviously, the parents both carried the gene and it appears to be a simple recessive much like gene for the color yellow. The question now remained—where did it come from? Some more research has uncovered that long-haired Labradors are fairly common in Europe, where indeed the long-haired Weimaraner is generally accepted by breeders. There have been several reports of the gene showing up in European-imported Labradors. The problem for us as breeders is that these puppies really do not look the way we expect Labradors to look. In addition, there are other characteristics that appear to be consistent with the longer coat, such as larger size and denser bone. The extrapolation is that perhaps this gene is a throwback to the ancestral St. There are at least two theories on how the recessive gene of long fur has appeared within the bloodlines of the Labrador Retriever. The first is that it is an original dog legacy St. However, there is no evidence of this, and also the dogs St. The other theory speaks instead of using flat coated retrievers at the beginning of the century. According to some, this was done to strengthen the bloodlines in England were weakening, in the early , and again after World War II. Obviously, there are no certain traces of this in the pedigrees of the current dogs. The separation of this was based on the coat length because all the puppies were yellow.
