When a dog changes from black to grey we call that fading however with a sable color we call it clearing. When puppies are 6 weeks old we can generally tell if a tricolor Bernedoodle puppy will fade and what color a sable Bernedoodle puppy will clear out to. Fading is an interesting topic and one I get a lot of grief from other breeders. I know that health and temperament are the most important but why not have it all????? Yes puppies that fade are beautiful and we love all colors but why breed without a goal? We have been breeding Bernedoodles for 8 years. We have mastered health and temperament. Why not continue upward and produce puppies that hold their color? Bernese is my heart breed. They are one of the most beautiful breeds, their loving loyal personality is something every family can benefit from. My goal is to produce puppies that even as adults look like a Bernese but have the hair of the poodle. Because our extensive experience we can now say with confidence we can tell what color your sable Bernedoodle will be when they are older. The brindle and tricolor is still a bit tricky but we are getting close! Through experience and years of research we believe we have standard lines that will not fade. The tricolor phantom coat or phantom tricolor coat color is the term used for a Bernedoodle with mostly black and rust with limited white. Phantom Tricolor is one of the most requested coat color I get. The phantom tricolor will be born with the black, rust, and white markings. As the dog gets older the hair can blend in making the phantom tricolor look like a phantom Bernedoodle. Phantom Tricolors are different from phantoms. Phantom tricolor Bernedoodles have some white while phantoms are only 2 colors usually black and rust. Some phantom tricolors will turn silver where they were once black and white where they were once brown. Some phantom tricolor Bernedoodles seem to hold their color very well. The phantom tricolor resembles a Bernese mountain dog with limited white. Bernedoodle colors and how they change The picture below is a 6 week old sable Bernedoodle and the same sable Bernedoodle a little over 2 years old. If you look close you can see the lighter color under her eyes is the same color she cleared out to. The ears seem to hold the black coloring. On the puppy picture you can see the dark tipped ear and in the adult Bernedoodle picture you can see the tips of the ears are still black. This puppy is another puppy from one of our non-fading poodles. You can see with age he is the same color as he was when he was a puppy. The picture below is a sable Bernedoodle at 8 weeks, 6 months, and over 2 years. If you look at the 8 week picture you can see that her true color is the brownish red color. You can see the brownish color under her eyes. Again the ears are tipped black and stayed black but her over all color cleared out to the color around her eyes as a young puppy. How does the sable Bernedoodle coat change? Sable Bernedoodles are born dark or even looking black. By the time they are a few days old we can tell if they are sable. The first signs of a sable bernedoodle are highlights by the ears, eyes, muzzle, and underneath the tail. When sable bernedoodles are 6 weeks old you can tell what color they will clear out to buy looking at the color under their eyes. Sable Bernedoodles will usually have a lighter brown, cream, or red coloring under and around the eyes. This is the color your sable Bernedoodle will most likely clear out to. Clearing out is different than fading. With fading we do not know what color the puppy will end up being. With clearing out the dog shows what color it will end up being around 6 weeks of age. Brindle Bernedoodle Color changes Sable Bernedoodle clearing-fading Brindle Bernedoodles seem to hold their color whether or not the poodle parent carries the fading gene. This has been the case in my breeding program. Most brindles are born with the brindle color. As the puppy gets older and the hair gets longer the colors blend in. When the puppy is shaved they will still have the brindle coloring. In other breeds brindle coloring can turn grey or silver. I have not seen this with Bernedoodles. You can see with age he is the same color and his rust shows more now than when he was a puppy. Merle Bernedoodle Coat Changes Any doodle can fade. Because the Bernedoodle has poodle in them they do have a tendency to fade. The fading comes from the poodle parent. Some Bernedoodles start out as black and turn silver. Some Bernedoodles start out looking black and turn cream. Your dogs genetics determine if your puppy will fade. There is not a test available to determine if your dog carries the fading gene. The only way to reduce fading in the Bernedoodle is to know the lineage and chose breeding dogs that have not faded and come from long lines of non-fading poodles. Even with that there is a chance your puppy could change colors with age. The lighter the rust is as a puppy the lighter the rust will be as an adult if your Bernedoodle has the fading gene. It has been interesting to watch the past eight years how the tricolor Bernedoodle color changes. One thing I am finding is that hair type can have an affect on whether or not they fade at an early age. Bernedoodles with a straighter coat seem to hold their color better than Bernedoodles with a curly coat regardless if the poodle parent carries the fading gene. Tricolor Bernedodoles with a poodle parent that faded to silver where their rust used to be seem to start fading as young as 10 weeks. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a phantom poodle parent seem to start fading a bit later around months. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a sable poodle parent seem to start fading around months. Tricolor Bernedoodles from a poodle parent that has not faded seem to hold their color. Because all of our puppies from our poodle parents that do not seem to carry the fading gene are under 2 years old we do not know what age they will start fading or if they will hold their color until they turn grey from old age. Do Bernedoodles Fade? The merle Bernedoodle coat is a newer coat color. Our Merle Bernedoodles are to young to know how their color will be as adults. So far what we are seeing is that the merle coat is actually turning a darker shade of grey. You can see with age his rust lightened up to a tan color and his coat came in wavy. Sable Bernedoodle Colors This tricolor phantom Bernedoodle puppy below is from out phantom male Trip. He over 2 years old and is the same color as when he was 8 weeks old. You can see that his rust is very similar to that of a pure Bernese mountain dog. He has a straighter coat. Tricolor Bernedoodle fading. You also do not need to follow this rigorously — but it serves as a good general guideline to follow. Just be sure not to overdo it as they are young. Also, look to introduce and buildup scheduled walks slowly. Then, of course, you will need to factor in the walk itself. How challenging is the walk, the terrain, and the weather? They will soon begin to show when they have had too much. But this is within reason! Its just in their nature to be more on the lazy side. So, you can use this to your advantage and you can motivate your dog to exercise by playing fetch with him, running alongside him, or getting them to swim as Bernedoodles typically love the water. Some dogs prefer to exercise more than others, but if your dog even goes for a walk with you anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour twice a day, you are ensuring they are meeting their exercise requirements and needs. Can Bernedoodles Go On Runs? Adult bernedoodles can go on runs with you, however, it is recommended that young puppy bernedoodles do not. Generally, you can begin to run with your bernedoodle from the time they are 12 months and older. For adult bernedoodles, they love to run around and enjoy being close with you and participating in activities together. You can play games with your dog that involve running such as playing fetch, getting them to run around an obstacle course, tug of war, or just running alongside him. You must be very careful with Bernedoodle puppies and a scheduled run is not recommended. For this reason, keep running outside in your backyard and be sure to give them plenty of time to rest and recover. Equally, they are more prone to injury from the impact that walking and other exercise can do. Keep this at your dogs pace. You should not force your puppy to go beyond a comfortable pace. Short episodes of gentle running, at the pace your dog dictates. Extended running outside without a break or chance to cool down. Getting your puppy to climb the stairs or go for longer walks up an incline such as hills. Active play in the yard — using toys and balls e. One more thing I will mention- Bernedoodle Generation and Allergy friendliness are not really correlated. A person can be allergic to either saliva or dander and if you are allergic to saliva you will be allergic to any and all Bernedoodles, Poodles, etc. If you are allergic to dander a Bernedoodle with the appropriate coat type will likely work for you. Before reading through the following description of coat types, I will say most Bernedoodle coats other than the Bernese Coat we have experience with have very little to no shedding. That being said we have almost never seen a curly-coated Bernedoodle shed. More than likely, your pooch will be fine if he eats a small, plain marshmallow. But marshmallows should not be given as treats regularly, and there are some marshmallows that can be very bad for dogs if consumed. Sugar-free marshmallows often contain the sweetener xylitol that, while safe for humans, is very bad for dogs. This toxic ingredient can cause a sudden drop in blood sugar levels and lead to severe symptoms such as liver failure. As with any human food, always check the ingredient list and avoid products with xylitol. Although plain marshmallows without xylitol are not toxic, they are still not recommended as a snack. Marshmallows offer no nutritional value to dogs and are very high in sugar, which can lead to diabetes and other health problems. Marshmallows can also be a choking hazard for dogs. What To Do If Your Dog Ate Marshmallows If your dog did steal a marshmallow or two off the floor while you were baking, first assess the ingredient list to determine whether your dog may have consumed any harmful ingredients like xylitol or chocolate. While one or two plain marshmallows will likely not cause him serious harm, you should still monitor your dog for signs of digestive upset. That routine became all the more important last year as Kaltenmark handed the reins over to Krauss, both bonded as dog lovers and Butler alumni. In the show, they're seen working side by side in an office, a dog-friendly workspace, of course. Weird how this works out, but Kaltenmark and his dog have a lot in common: All business on the job, both professional as they can be — well, as professional as any bulldog can be — but softer away from the spotlight. He has to be housebroken still, and later this week Evan will bring him to Hinkle Fieldhouse and start preparing him for life in the spotlight. It will start with Blue IV following Trip, learning from the alpha dog by watching him, and will continue in the empty fieldhouse when Evan turns on the bright lights and pipes in the loud music and crowd noise and teaches Blue IV to skid across the court and grab his bone. In , Klout named his Twitter feed one of the top 10 feeds representing a college or university. However, when Butler made an unexpected run to the Final Four, Blue II was granted a special exemption and allowed to attend the festivities in Indianapolis. The guy everyone wanted to see before Saturday's Final Four had four legs and fur. So if we can serve that role and be a distraction for everyone else, all the better. Southwest Airlines allowed Blue II to join Kaltenmark in the main cabin of the plane, rather than relegating him to the cargo hold. Reporters crowded around Blue II and posed for pictures with him. The Star-Ledger called him a "four legged rock star. A Fathead graphic has also been created. His official retirement was on May 20, .The condition is non-reversible and affected both sides of his heart. Blue II was given medication to manage his symptoms. He was given just weeks to live and was not expected to make any further public appearances. He was 9 years old. She served from to and had white fur. She served until Walker moved from Indianapolis in , and lived the rest of her life with Walker. Butler Blue IV was unveiled Wednesday morning on social media, but he'll make his fist public appearance at Hinkle Fieldhouse on Friday night right before the Butler men's basketball game. A red jeep pulls into the parking lot, and out hops a week-old french bulldog. He trots with his owner into the Clinic. A few more cars pull in. Two cats head inside, followed by a lab mix. A man and a woman emerge from the car, grab a plastic Bella Storage Solution liter bin, and hurry inside. No one knows it at the time, but about an hour later, it becomes official: The bin is holding the next Butler University live mascot, Butler Blue IV. The decision marked the end of a process much longer than a one-hour vet appointment. It was a journey that technically started in December , when Kaltenmark, Krauss, and Phillips determined it would be best for Trip to retire [icm-tracking. But it also marked the beginning of the next phase of preparations for introducing a new live mascot. Now, about a month later, the puppy who snuck into the clinic in a plastic bin has grown into a week-old, 20 pound dog. He has experienced more of the mascot lifestyle—posing for photo shoots, growing out of two Butler jerseys, and listening to a cranked-up Butler fight song on repeat to simulate a raucous Hinkle Fieldhouse. But Blue has also been adjusting to, well, life. He moved away from his two sisters and mother into his new home at 10 weeks old. Butler Blue IV has lived in near anonymity since he was born in October. But as the new mascot-in-training until he takes over full-time when Trip retires in May, the days of being toted around in secret bins are about to be long gone. In May, Kaltenmark and Krauss sat down and solidified a succession plan. But the more he thought about it, the more he realized it might be best for him to take a step back. Kaltenmark was first told in December that his kidneys were failing. He needed a transplant. He received one from his brother in early January .Once the team settled on a handler, it was time to start looking for the next dog. Kaltenmark and Krauss relied on Phillips to identify potential litters of bulldog puppies. Phillips interviewed several breeders. He also conducted pre-breeding exams that took health, temperament, and timing into consideration. They went through about four or five litters, but none of the puppies quite fit what they needed in terms of health and timing. Then, the Madajs entered the picture. How to find a dog Jodi Madaj has always been a dog person. At times there would be eight, nine, even 10 dogs there, all courtesy of Madaj. That love of dogs has not waned. Madaj, her husband, and their two kids have had basset hounds, boxers, and german boxers, but her son always wanted a bulldog. So, in , Madaj and her husband bought a bulldog puppy, put it in a box with a bow on top, and gave it to their son as a Christmas present. Phoebe had puppies in , and the Madajs, of course, kept two of the puppies. One of those puppies, Trixie, had a litter of seven in .Madaj also has a love for Butler. Her kids grew up going to camps at the University, and her son played soccer there. But, it was not immediately clear if one would be the next Butler mascot. The puppies were fed every two hours around the clock for the first three weeks. Madaj slept right next to Violet on the couch every single night. For the first six weeks, Madaj never left the puppies alone. Then, there was the secret part of it all. Madaj told her kids, but not her mother, hiding Violet in the bedroom when her mother came over. But during the six-week-old visit with Phillips is December, he decided that one of them stuck out. One of the puppies had a respiratory problem, and the other was a bit aggressive. The third was just right. He is a super cool puppy. He is super easy going and not aggressive at all. Everything fell in line with this dog. It will be really hard to leave him, but I know he is going to a great cause—to represent a wonderful institution. When Krauss came to pick up Blue in mid-January, she gave him a laminated binder full of instructions, and she cried. About 20 minutes after Krauss left, Madaj texted to see how everything was going. Krauss, the new mascot handler, is adjusting, too. Krauss has never owned a dog in his life. When he was growing up, the Krausses were—you guessed it—cat people. Krauss is allergic to dogs, which sometimes even causes him to throw up. Then, when his older sister became a Butler cheerleader and Krauss started going to every basketball game, the team he fell in love with had a dog as their mascot. The student group helped Kaltenmark with the mascot program, filming video of Trip or assisting at events. Krauss had to lie during his interview when asked if he was allergic to dogs. Now, he is taking over handler duties. The spare bedroom of his apartment is stocked with dog toys, a crate, and food. Kaltenmark assured him it was normal for a puppy, but he brought it to the vet to be sure. So, Krauss called the vet, who assured him it was normal, and Kaltenmark brought benadryl over. They have a soft, curly coat that comes in a variety of colors, including black, white, red, silver, brown, and parti-color white with solid color patches. The Standard Poodle is a medium- to large-sized dog, measuring inches at the shoulder and weighing pounds. Caring for a Standard Poodle Poodles are generally a good-natured breed. They have a curly haircoat that has a long growth cycle, making them prone to matting. Regular and consistent grooming by a professional will help keep their coat healthy and prevent tangles. Along with grooming, Standard Poodles also require regular exercise and training to keep their minds and bodies happy. But there are a few conditions pet parents should watch for. Hip Dysplasia As a larger dog, hip dysplasia is not uncommon. This causes inflammation, scar tissue, and, over time, arthritis. Idiopathic Epilepsy Idiopathic epilepsy is a genetic seizure disorder that can result in spastic muscle movements, loss of consciousness, urination, and defecation. Seizures typically last less than 1 minute, and dogs with idiopathic epilepsy typically return to normal within a few hours. Standard Poodles with idiopathic epilepsy usually begin having seizures between years of age. Epilepsy and seizures can be controlled with medications prescribed by your veterinarian. Bloat Standard Poodles can develop gastric dilatation and volvulus, or bloat. This procedure is often done on deep-chested dogs during their spay or neuter surgery. Gastrointestinal Issues Poodles can also suffer gastrointestinal upset if they eat human foods. Any signs of gastrointestinal distress, such as retching , vomiting , diarrhea , or decreased appetite , should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. What To Feed a Standard Poodle Standard Poodles are athletic dogs and require a nutritionally complete diet meant for large breeds. If your Poodle exercises several hours a day, a sport-type diet is recommended because it provides increased calories. Avoid human foods and table scraps to prevent gastrointestinal problems. Poodles should be fed twice a day. If your dog tends to eat too quickly, which puts them at risk for vomiting and bloat, use a slow feeder bowl for meals. As noted, Poodles should be fed twice daily. As athletic dogs, they can use up their daily calories if they are always on the go, but weight gain can increase their risk of pain from hip dysplasia or arthritis. Your vet can help you navigate this balancing act. Nutritional Tips for Standard Poodles Because Standard Poodles are prone to hip dysplasia, they should be on a joint supplement containing glucosamine and chondroitin. They enjoy meeting new people and are adaptable to new situations. In fact, they have a long history as performers in the circus and on stage because of their trainability. Most Poodles will respond to basic obedience training quickly. Poodle parents should work on more advanced training, like teaching tricks, puzzle games, and agility to keep their dog mentally stimulated and happy. Standard Poodles are intelligent and proud—and appreciate a challenge. Fun Activities for Standard Poodles Agility. The poodle's bright demeanor and people-pleasing nature make him an excellent pal for humans and peacekeeper among other pets. Standard poodles are the most athletic and agile of all the poodle types , and they take quickly to training. Poodles also have the privilege of being low odor and among the least-shedding of all coated dogs. So they're pretty much perfect, right? Not so fast. The timid poodle can border on neurotic at times, and he's easily stressed out by noise and any amount of chaos or conflict. Poodles can also be time-consuming and expensive to groom. But if you can deal with these quirks, you'll be rewarded with a loyal, lively pet who loves to make you happy. Appearance Poodles are known for their curly coat, long pointed nose, and small dark eyes.
