It is hard plastic covered with a loose stretchy fabric. I chose the retriever because the brown color looked like it would hide dirt more than the poodle, which is white. The tail looks like it could break if it fell from a height, but after six weeks the toy is still in good shape. It has grown and shrunk at least twice.
