Where We and Our Goldens Live Our Home Our family lives on a private road in a community filled with gated areas, beautiful ponds and lakes, pastures, and woods. All of our neighbors have acres of land. Our English Golden Retrievers live and sleep in our home. We have 5 doggy doors going out of our home into five different fenced areas. Our front door gives access to a sixth. Someone is home with them nearly all the time. We are fortunate enough to have a home large enough for the dogs to have plenty of room. Our house has an open floor plan that enables us to see all of our dogs from one place. At the same time, we are still able to separate them individually or in groups when necessary. How We Care for Our Dogs Unless it is rainy, our dogs have free access in and out of our home through doggy doors. We brush each dog regularly and bathe them about once a month. Because they have access to large outdoor areas, we rinse them off often. We do daily competitive obedience training with most of them and they all do short training sessions at meal times. The dogs rotate between the various areas in our home so that they all have quality time with us. We use primarily natural methods to prevent fleas and tics, and we feed our dogs high quality food. Litters whelped and raised in our home How and Why We Initially Started Breeding When we first started this venture, we were a home-schooling family with 3 children from years of age. Our home life was and still is very compatible with caring for dogs. My younger daughter, Elise, was also wanting a career with dogs. At 12, Elise was unsure what career with dogs she wanted, but both girls had a big passion for animals. We began breeding initially purely for the love of our daughters. We had no paid employees and Darrell husband and Daniel son helped minimally. But as time went on, Darrell and Daniel become involved and we added several paid employees. Darrell now handles most of the communications. Daniel has graduated from college and is working in Georgia as a civil engineer. The Early Days of Summer Brook Acres Before getting our first dogs, we spent hundreds maybe thousands of hours researching. We started off deciding on the breed. From there, we moved to researching breeders and individual dogs and pedigrees. We retired more than half of what we originally imported without ever breeding them. Breeders send their best dogs to those they have a relationship with. Most of these best breeders are leery of sending dogs to the U. For those of you considering a new breeder or breeders with adults without verified clearances, proceed with care. There are a lot of European breeders that are exporting entire litters of what Americans are calling English Cream Golden Retrievers. In Europe, many of the parents of these puppies are considered by Europeans less than mediocre and just plain old Golden Retrievers. Our experience is not unusual for good breeders. There are a lot of hoops to jump through in order to have really good breeding dogs. It is not as simple as calling or emailing a European breeder and asking for the best dog. The best breeders in Europe are very particular about where their dogs go. It takes time to develop relationships overseas. And it takes patience to build good lines with good looks, health, and temperaments. In addition to our English Golden Retrievers, over the past almost 20 years, our family has had one American Golden and 4 smaller dogs. These 5 dogs were family pets and never bred. Our family has had six horses, three birds, a rabbit, and three cats. Not all of them were at the same time! We loved them all. However, none of them quite captured all of our hearts like the Golden Retrievers. Though all our dogs are a light cream, we do not breed for color. We feel that the head is important but, it is not the entire package. There is so much more in producing a nice litter of puppies. We will only breed the best dogs that meet our very high standards. We have intensely studied the pedigrees of hundreds of dogs looking for those with generations of proven good conformation, good health, and a typical sweet Golden Retriever temperament. Most of our dogs have parents with not only titles earned because of their beauty, but titles proving their worth as working dogs also. Please read through all info below as it goes over our adoption process. If you have any questions after reading the info below please feel free to contact us! There are varying factors that determine prices on each litter. We do have a contract we send out once a pup has been chosen which goes over the whole guarantee and adoption agreement. Deposit payments are only accepted zelle at this time. No other forms of payment for deposit will be accepted at this time. We update the pups photos once a week until 7 weeks of age, typically on the day of the week they were born. I do my best to keep to that day, unless something comes up, then they might be delayed by a day. Photo day can be extremely time consuming, if you can imagine. One litter typically can take between hours to do photos, so typically they get uploaded by late afternoon to early evening. Once puppies are chosen. We do updates more than most breeders we know as we have purchased from other breeders and rarely got photos more then every weeks. If updates are done more than that, you will not be able to see or appreciate the growth process, so we do not do updates more often then that. Because puppies have limited immune systems and require many rounds of vaccines until 16 weeks of age before they are considered fully immune, we take extra precautions to ensure the health of our little ones while in our care. Disease and viruses can easily be tracked and transferred through contact with clothing, shoes, jewelry, etc. To prevent any risk to our pups, we do not show any pups in person. Pups are chosen by pictures and videos posted on our website and social media pages. I do my best to accommodate when trying to choose your new family addition. If more photos or videos are needed to make your decision, please feel free to ask. I do post an "intro video" of every litter. This video is typically posted around 9 to 10 days of age and goes over each puppy in the litter in detail so all markings can be seen on each puppy. When there is a waiting list in place, the puppy picking process does not start until pups are at least 10 days of age to ensure all pups are growing and striving as they should be. Once they reach that milestone the picking process will begin for families on the waiting list. Any pups still available after 8 weeks of age, we will gladly try to set up video meet and greets for the pups and you, if you are interested in any of our available pups. There have been spikes of the deadly virus parvo and also distemper in recent years and we have stopped all in person viewing. How are your puppies raised? Our pups begin their lives in our homes, and therefore are used to all the noises of a household. Later, as they get older, they begin to go outside during the day, weather permitting, and coming back into the house with their mother at night. Eventually they will be outside day and night, usually just before they are going to their new homes. Will my puppy be vaccinated and microchipped? We give all vaccination information to you when you pick up your pup so you can take it to your vet. Will my puppy be AKC Registered? We sell all of our pet puppies on an AKC Limited registration. This means they are AKC registered dogs which cannot be used for breeding and cannot be shown in conformation shows or field trials. They can, however, be shown in obedience, agility, rally, tracking, retriever hunting trials, service dogs, and other performance events and can earn titles. If they are bred, AKC will not give a registration to the resulting puppies. What happens when I bring my puppy home? We ask that you take your puppy to a vet for a physical exam within 48 hours of receiving it. If there is anything wrong with the pup that causes you to feel you cannot keep the puppy, you may return it within 24 hours of the diagnosis with a letter from the examining Veterinarian, for a full return of your puppy price. We will not be responsible for any unauthorized vet bills. When can my puppy come home? Puppies begin going to new homes after they turn 8 weeks old. Do you offer returns or a home if I can't keep a dog purchased from you? We will take back one of our dogs at any time in its life for any reason, and in fact, we want to be your first phone call if for any reason you can no longer keep your dog. We will take the dog back and if we can resell it, will do so and then return your purchase price. Sometimes the dog might be middle aged or older and cannot be resold and in that case you would not get your purchase price returned, and we would probably keep the dog for the rest of its life as one of our house dogs. Our main goal is to know where our dogs are and that they are in good, happy homes where they are part of the family. Do you have a waiting list? Yes, we have a waiting list. We start a puppy waiting list when we know that we either have a pregnant female or actually have puppies. Our puppies are sold on a first come, first serve basis. How do we choose our puppy? Our process for letting the pups go to their new homes is to critique or grade the litter at 6 to 8 wks of age and at that time they are vaccinated and microchips are assigned. We keep a record of notes on our evaluation of the pups. If we can we make a choice at that time regarding which are show quality pups and which are companion dogs, we will call the pet buyers and let them know what is available. If we cannot make a decision, we will look at the pups again at 8 wks of age. Once our decision is made, we notify the new puppy buyers and have them set an appointment to pick up their new baby. Can I have the first pick puppy? When we breed a litter we are breeding for ourselves and will keep as many puppies as we deem necessary to continue with our breeding program on this particular pedigree. While we always choose first, it doesn't mean that the puppies that are left aren't perfect for you. Many times, you won't notice the difference between our keepers and your beautiful puppy. Unfortunately after the scans were taken, a spot was found on his liver which gave him a terminal diagnosis 2 months without chemo, 6 months with chemo. In March of he opted to start a chemo regiment every 3 weeks to hopefully extend his life expectancy. During the next few months him and I created a bucket list of things he wanted to do, which we were able to complete in between his visits to the hospital and chemo treatments. In August his cancer was reassessed to see if the chemo treatments had been working. The results were heartbreaking, the chemo hadn't worked and his body was full of cancer. Within a month of this heart breaking news my fathers health deteriorated, he was back and forth between hospice and the emergency room until he lost his battle to cancer on September 22, .My fathers loss has been extremely difficult, but I am now able to start focusing on my breeding program once again.
