This was the first time we had a chance to chart puppies from birth until 8 weeks old. We tried to take as many pictures as possible so we could have a journal of our Golden Retriever puppy growth week by week. When raising guide and service dog puppies we usually bring home our puppies at around weeks old. On occasion we are allowed to see puppies before 8 weeks of age, but they need to stay with their mother and siblings during those important early weeks to get milk and antibodies from mama and learn how to interact properly with siblings, learning important behaviors like bite inhibition. During our days as a foster we raised two litters of puppies , but both were already weeks old by the time we got them home. We actually own the Puppy Culture DVD and Workbook which includes charts, lists, worksheets and other great information for raising your litter. Keep your eyes and ears open and absorb it all like a sponge! Birth To 1 Week Old Guess what? This was the first litter we ever whelped!? We got a lot of advise, but we were largely on our own. Large Puppy Dish — great for feeding the puppies when they moved to solid food. Whelping Mats — we ordered 2 of these mats and washed them several times a day. Whelping Box — We have a homemade whelping box built by my father-in-law, but if we continue raising litters I plan on purchasing an EZWhelp Whelping Box. Our homemade box lasted three litters. We ended up purchasing the Magnabox which was hellu expensive but if you plan on raising multiple litters we highly recommend it. We recently put together a whelping checklist with all the supplies we gathered together to help out with our second litter of Golden Retriever puppies. It was my understanding that when the cord was chewed down to the base of the belly it was sometimes difficult to get it to stop bleeding. I took the hemostat and pinched the umbilical cord about 2 inches from the base of the pups belly then cut the cord rather than let Raven chew it off. I kept the hemostat on the cord for about 2 minutes to let it clout. The umbilical cord dries up quickly and then within a day or 2 it falls off. Raven was a good mama and took care of her poops. Puppy eyes and ears are closed at this stage and puppies army crawl around the whelping box looking for a teat to suckle. We did everything we could to make sure our pups stayed warm by adding a watt heat lamp to the whelping box and portable heating unit in the puppy room. As I mentioned Raven stayed in the whelping box most of week 1 and of course… the puppy piles! One thing I learned is if I had a puppy on my lap then do not let Raven lick those areas or be prepared for a little accident on your lap. While caring for Raven and her litter Raven was really blowing out her coat that first week, but as time went on it slowed down. I heard from other friends this is common and that Raven blew out her coat much less than other mama dogs. We got Probiotics for Raven before her first litter, but forgot to order them for her second litter. After an upset stomach for the first week or so we realized our mistake, got Probiotics, and no more upset tummy. Week 2 — Pups eyes are opening starting to waddle. Week 3 — First bark! Dobermann Pinschers, known simply as Dobermann in their homeland of Germany, are equally as alert and intelligent as Boxers. Known for their long muzzles, graceful gaits, and intense loyalty to their owners, they were originally bred to provide protection to their owners. Socialization from a young age will almost always result in them being a loyal companion animal, as well as a proficient guard dog. Thankfully, the Boxerman has inherited the most desirable traits of both of its parent breeds — and lost much of the aggression and stubbornness that can still be present in both parents. Kind, sociable, and loyal to an extreme, the Boxerman has a gentle nature to complement its stout physique. Besides being ill-suited to extremely cold or hot temperatures, they enjoy a high degree of health and generally long lifespans. They Are A Member of the Molosser Group of Dogs Even further back than their Boxer and Dobermann ancestors, Boxerman dogs are related to the Molossian Hound, an ancient dog breed renowned throughout Greek literature for its large size and legendary ferocity. Even Aristotle was awed by their nature, commenting that they were remarkable for both their courage and endurance in hard labor. The Boxerman Makes an Excellent Police Dog Thanks to its heritage from two willful, alert dogs that were bred for loyalty and guarding, Boxerman dogs are now trained to join K9 police units around the United States. In this capacity, they are respected for their ability to quickly learn and retain commands, as well as their tenaciousness when given a target to chase or attack. They Can Be Quite Good with Small Pets Boxerman dogs do not tend to have a high prey drive like those of the Terrier or Retriever families and can easily be trained to be gentle with small animals. If you already own rabbits, birds, ferrets, or rats, introducing a Boxerman puppy to them early in its life will likely lead to long-term friendship bonds. Capable of learning tricks and commands with relative ease, they make excellent guard dogs thanks to their suspicion of strangers and stout physical stature. Boxerman Pinscher Description Boxerman is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Boxer and the Doberman Pinscher. The best way to determine the temperament of a mixed breed is to look up all breeds in the cross and know you can get any combination of any of the characteristics found in either breed. It is very common for breeders to breed multi-generation crosses. He loves to run around and play, he is especially finicky after his bath. He is a mostly indoor dog, he goes outside to play and to do his business, and is fenced in. He lives with our other dog Fryla, a mixed breed. He's also one of the funniest dogs I've met. He is a really smart dog, and it didn't take me long to house train him, maybe a month to get him to always go outside. In this picture he is probably two and a half months old. He loves to play and he is great with little children. He was chasing my cousin who is three years old and to catch her he would put his mouth on her, not biting just putting his mouth up against her, like ha I caught you! His bad habits are he likes to get into everything. He chews on underwear and socks. He loves to eat rocks. He definitely loves to chase birds. He is a smart dog though, within a month of me having him, he knows how to roll over, give me a high five and he gives me kisses. But I'm like Diego give me a kiss and he puts his mouth up to mine, not licking me. He knows when I tell him to jump and he dances with me. I can take him outside and he doesn't run away. He listens pretty well for the most part. I tell him to get in the car and he gets in the car, I tell him to get in the back and he goes. She is a Boxerman Pinscher. This pup is a loving pet that is relatively easy to care for and a quick learner. That makes them ideal for the experienced dog owner. Both parent breeds bring health issues to the table, though. Dogs that are harder to train will require a bit more patience and practice. Proper exercise, nutrition, and hygiene also play an important role in the lifespan of your pet. More social dogs have a tendency to run up to strangers for pets and scratches, while less social dogs shy away and are more cautious, even potentially aggressive. However, many of these are controllable if you get a puppy that is at least 8 weeks old and has had valuable socialization time with their mother and littermates. The Boxer in your pup has a relatively high prey drive due to their hunting past. That also fuels their wanderlust potential and tendency to bark. The Boxerman is a large dog. They are affectionate with their human companions and want to spend time with them. That also means a commitment on your part. They are a loyal dog that will form strong bonds with their owner. They also are more sensitive to harsh words than you may think. Positive reinforcement is the best way to handle a Boxerman. Are These Dogs Good for Families? They are affectionate pets that can make excellent watchdogs. We suggest supervising playtime with younger children just because of the size of this pup. Both parent breeds have a high potential for playfulness. The intensity of the Boxer may overwhelm smaller kids. The size and prey drive of the Boxer might prevent getting along with other pets. A fleeing cat is sure to trigger a chase. Early socialization is imperative if you already have a dog. We suggest enrolling your pet in puppy playtime classes as soon as you get them. Things to Know When Owning a Boxerman Owning a larger dog is more of a training commitment because of their size. It also means more attention to exercise, training, and their diet because both parent breeds have a tendency to get overweight. Fortunately, the Boxerman is an energetic dog, which will help on that score. However, there are several other things to consider with this particular mix. Their needs are different from smaller dogs, which mature more rapidly. Puppies need more protein and fat than adult dogs to support their growth and development. We suggest feeding your pup three or four small meals a day and gradually cutting this down to two times a day as an adult. Both parent breeds have a heightened risk of bloat, which can occur if they gulp down their food and swallow too much air. Feeding them multiple meals makes this less likely to occur. It will also keep their blood sugar stable throughout the day. That will mean daily walks to keep your pet active and help avoid obesity. A walk will also provide adequate mental stimulation, which is vital for intelligent pups like the Boxerman. However, that also means that you must be a strong leader when it comes to training. Treats are excellent motivators and will foster a positive training experience with your Boxerman. We recommend weekly brushing to keep the hair under control. You should also check their ears regularly, especially if they are not cropped. We suggest handling their paws frequently to get them used to having them touched. We recommend buying from reputable sellers who do pre-breeding screenings. This also makes regular vet care imperative. Minor Conditions. It is sometimes referred to as the Boxerman. The exact ratios of mixing, and even the exact breeds that were used, remain uncertain to this day, although many experts believe that the Boxer Doberman Pinscher is a combination of several breeds including the Beauceron, German Pinscher, Rottweiler and Weimaraner. The single exception is the documented crossing with the Greyhound and Manchester Terrier. It is also widely believed that the old German Shepherd gene pool was the single largest contributor to the Boxer Doberman breed. Philip Greunig's The Boxer Dobermann Pinscher , is considered the foremost study of the development of the breed by one of its most ardent students. Greunig's study describes the breed's early development by Otto Goeller, whose hand allowed the Boxer Doberman to become the dog we recognize today. Boxer The Boxer is a relatively new breed from the late 19th century. It hails from Germany. He hails from the Bulldog and some German Mastiffs. As most dogs he is a mix of many breeds. He was bred to be a working dog and has hunting and fighting in his past. He was a voracious worker in both World Wars. He is a very playful dog and really not very aggressive, but is extremely loyal. He is extremely alert and will be good with your kids. If he or his family feels threatened, he will show his protective side. Should a Doberman Mix take after their Doberman Pinscher parent, they will be a large, powerful, and protective dog that is affectionate with their families. They may look imposing as they grow, but they are playful, energetic dogs that can make great family pets. Doberman Pinschers are quintessential protectors. As such, they require a lot of training and socialization to become a happy, well-balanced, and well-mannered dog. A properly socialized and trained Doberman is fiercely loyal to their families and is also a loving companion with a fun personality. As long as they are properly trained and socialized, they tend to get along well with children, other dogs, and even other pets. If a Doberman Mix takes after their Doberman Pinscher parent, then you can expect a similar temperament. However, the other parent breed will likely introduce some other potential traits and quirks, so you do want to ask the breeder about them. You can also meet the mother dog in-person to get an idea of her temperament and to see the behavior she is modeling for her puppies. The breeder should be starting socialization and training. Dobermans are moderately adaptable dogs. Because of their large size and high energy, they are better suited to homes with yards where they can run. They can adapt to apartment living, but you will need to dedicate a lot of time every day to making sure they get the exercise and attention they need to be happy and healthy. Doberman Pinschers do well in most climates. As with any dog breed, they are sensitive to heat. Because of their short coat, they may need to bundle up in some winter dog products to stay warm on walks during the winter. They also do not like to be left alone for long periods of time. If the other parent breed is similar in terms of adaptability, then you can expect the same from a Doberman Mix. You still want to ask the breeder about the other parent breed so you have a better idea of what mix of traits and quirks a Doberman Mix puppy could end up with. Mixed-breed dogs are sometimes healthier than purebred dogs. The other parent breed will have their own set of potential health concerns, so you want to ask the breeder about them. Reputable breeders will screen their dogs to help avoid passing issues on to puppies. So, you should be planning to ask about the health and genetic history of both of the parents anyway. You can also ask about any relevant health tests or clearances that have been done. Doberman Pinschers are also one of the dog breeds at a higher risk for developing bloat and a Doberman Mix will likely have the same risk. Bloat in dogs is a serious condition that can quickly become fatal if gastric torsion occurs. Although Dobermans are highly intelligent dogs that pick up on things quickly and are eager to please, they are also strong, powerful dogs with a strong will as well. If they are not socialized properly or well-trained, they can become unmanageable, destructive, and pushy. Because of this, a Doberman Pinscher is usually better suited to more experienced owners. Isabella This unusual coat color variation is another washout as far the AKC is concerned, which is a shame given how striking it is. It originates from genetically combining liver and blue dilution genes. Like the liver and blue German Shepherd dogs, Isabella GSDs often have unusual eye coloring and different colored noses. Liver German Shepherds will usually have a brown nose. Blue German Shepherds have a blue nose. There is no evidence that the Isabella coloration makes the dog more susceptible to health issues. However, Isabella is a recessive trait. Selecting for recessive traits always limits the gene pool and makes dogs more susceptible to genetic conditions. Grey Not to be confused with the silver, black, or blue German Shepherds, the gray variety look more wolf-like with their dark coats. Some breeders specialize in producing dogs of this unusual color. Silver Similar to the gray German Shepherd, silver is nevertheless recognized as a distinct color. Often grouped together, however, the gray and silver colors are produced by the same genes. Finding a breeder that specializes in silver German Shepherds is a lot easier than finding one that focuses on the grey, so this might be your best bet if you want a more exotic-looking companion. Silver is an uncommon color for GSDs, possibly because it is a recessive gene. Similar to the dilution gene, this gene influences black pigment. While you also get silver sable German Shepherds, the patterned coats mean they are categorized as sable rather than silver. Agouti is a type of coloring also present in other dogs, like the Agouti Husky. In this coloring each hair has several bands of brown and black, leading to a typical wolf-like coloration. Some founding members of the German Shepherd breed believed this should be the only color present in German Shepherds. Black sables are born as all-black pups and tri-colored sables are born as black and tan puppies. As the puppy ages, their coloring changes. Some GSDs may take as long as three years to develop their final sable coloration. As every sable GSD is different, with the color and pattern both varying, it makes for an eye-catching and unique dog. Sable is a dominant color that is easy to breed for. If you breed a Sable German Shepherd to any other color, you will likely get sable puppies. Black and Silver Much like the black and tan GSD, a black and silver German Shepherd usually has a silver saddle across its back, although the pattern and hue both vary from dog to dog. Like the silver GSD, the black and silver coloration occurs only when the recessive intensity suppression gene is present. This color is not common in the AKC show ring and can mostly be found in working dog lines. Because these dogs are not visible in the dark, it is highly advisable to only walk them on a light-up dog collar in the evenings and at night. Bicolor Bicolor German Shepherds appear almost completely black and, to fit the breed standard, must have black heads, back, legs and tail. Even if their paws are brown, the heels need to be black by the color standard definition. However, the AKC accepts bicolor as a recessive color in the breed. Though technically allowed in the show ring, these dogs are mostly found in working lines. Black and Cream The last official color on our list, the black and cream GSD remains true to its origins as a lighter version of the common red and tan coloring. There is some controversy surrounding the black and cream variation. Most AKC breeders do not want them to participate in the show ring. They strive to breed darker dogs that do not show the light cream coloring. The color does little to change their character, however, and black and cream GSDs excel obedience, nosework, rally and agility and are as loyal and brave as their black and tan cousins. Her DNA proved them wrong, although the Panda coloration remains unrecognized by some kennel clubs and breeders. The Panda GDS is created by a rare genetic mutation. The genes responsible for an all-white body and the patchy white are two different ones. This does not stop them from being popular however! There is a large demand for Panda-colored German Shepherds. Unfortunately, this inflates the price and leads breeders to focus on the color mutation rather than genetic health, so be sure to only source a puppy from a reputable breeder. Albino An albino German Shepherd is incredibly rare. An albino of any species or breed lacks any pigmentation, including of the skin, hair, and eyes as well as the blood vessels, resulting in a pinkish tinge. You can distinguish an albino German Shepherd from a white one by checking his eyes and nose. A White GDS will have some pigmentation resulting in brown eyes, whereas albinos always have red or pink eyes. An Albino GSD, should one exist, may experience other health problems associated with the condition. They may, for example, be photosensitive, requiring protection from direct sunlight. Use the items during busy times in your home to keep your dog calm and out of areas that might increase their excitement and biting and nipping you. Puppies tend to bite and chew when their teeth are coming in. They do this to relieve the pain and help soothe themselves. Freeze a durable large Kong with their favorite treats and kibble and have them on hand for times when your dog is acting out and biting you. Give them a Kong to gnaw on and bring icy relief to their gums. Plus, chewing has been shown to help relax and calm dogs. Redirections are actions that keep your pup from engaging in unwanted behavior by showing them appropriate behavior. For example: When your dog nips you, find their teething toy to bite instead. When your dog jumps on you to bite your hands or ankles, look around for a Kong to give to them to bite on. Squeaky toys like this toy that continues to squeak , even after a puncture, are ideal to distract your dog from your hand to another object. These toys differ from their special toys mentioned above because these redirection toys are ones you leave out for your pup to chew most of the time. So, be sure to have them nearby! Use Daily Leadership Skills How many times a day do you teach your German Shepherd to listen to you and offer them leadership? Use daily interactions as an effective way of teaching your dog about leadership. Have them sit before you take them for a walk or exiting a door. Ignore them altogether. Only offer them interaction and come back to them when they show you calming behaviors. Our dogs love our attention. And German Shepherds crave it! An overfed dog that is under-exercised may display destructive behaviors because of boredom and lack of energy needs being met. Get up off the couch and go outside for a walk and sniff party. Low impact activities and free-running off-leash running are best. Choose from a list of fun and gentle, age-appropriate German Shepherd puppy exercises to keep your pup healthy and better behaved. Stop roughhousing with your dog before it frustrates them. Use appropriate, puppy-safe toys instead of play sessions. This way, your pup can bite the toy instead of your fingers, hands, or arms. Games are also the best time to engage and enforce training techniques and get your GSD accustomed to them before biting gets out of hand. Stick to simple games like fetch or frisbee, where you can train your pooch to give the ball back when you tell them to. Harsh treatments like hitting or shouting are highly unlikely to solve the problem and will probably just make it worse, as your dog will simply become nervous and wary of you. With a powerful dog like German Shepherds, trust is vital. They are highly intelligent and aware animals, and the smallest of sounds or movements are enough to set them off. There are several reasons for this, including: GSD puppies will begin teething as early as 2 weeks old, and this can be uncomfortable and even painful for them. This behavior can go on until your puppy is 6 months old, and they will chew on almost anything that they can find — including your hand — in an attempt to try and soothe their discomfort. Separated too young. The first 2 months of your GSDs life is vital to their socialization and learning, and if they are taken away from their mother and litter too young, this may cause a lack of understanding of boundaries. Puppies will play and learn with the rest of their littermates, where they learn to control the force of their bite. GSDs should be at least 8 weeks old before they are re-homed. Fear or overstimulation. Fear, anxiety, and overstimulation are common reasons for puppies to lose control of their bite because this can cause them to become irritable or defensive and lead them into the habit of biting. Some apricot Poodles are so light that they appear to be cream, however you will notice a red tint to the hair. A true apricot poodle will have some points or black spots on their skin. Liver points are acceptable but not preferred in the U. All blue Poodles are born black and then "clear" lighten as the pup grows. This often happens within the first year but this change can take place as late as 2 years in some cases. For this reason, many blue Poodles are registered as black.
